Green spaces ‘vital’ during COVID-19 pandemic
One year on since the UK went into national lockdown, national land management charity, the Land Trust, has published the results of a recent survey which shows how important green spaces have been for people throughout the pandemic.
Over 90% of participants said they think that spending time in green spaces has had a positive effect on their mental and physical health throughout the pandemic. With people using green spaces for exercise, nature watching or spending time with their family, this has had a
particular impact on people’s mental health.
Ninety-five per cent of respondents said spending time in green space had a positive effect on their mental health.
The Land Trust kept as many of its 80 parks and green spaces open as possible throughout 2020 so that local communities could benefit from spending time in well-managed green space.
This saw an increase in park users, with a 20% rise in people visiting green spaces every day
since the first lockdown began. With limited budgets and restrictions prohibiting volunteering activity during most of the last year, maintaining 80+ sites as a charity has been a challenge.
Alan Carter, Director of Portfolio Management at the Land Trust, said: “I’m so proud of what we’ve been able to achieve and provide for so many people throughout the pandemic.
“I know how important it’s been to have a clean, safe space to use for that daily escape from the
STIHL expands brushcutter range
STIHL has launched the new FSA 86 R, adding to its range of high-performance brushcutters.
The new FSA 86 R offers the low weight of its predecessor, the FSA 85, with added features like the ergo lever handle cutting attachments that can be changed by hand, a new design and more power.
The all-new high revving direct drive motor produces 20% more power, delivering outstanding cutting performance. The EC motor also offers excellent efficiency during operation, ensuring it permanently monitors the load and adjusts the engine accordingly.
Additionally, the exceptional power-to-weight ratio makes the tool incredibly easy to use, particularly for line-trimming around boarders and trees, without the need of metal cutting tools or a full bike-handle brushcutter.
Although the new AutoCut C 6-2 cutting head is fitted as standard, the new PolyCut 6-2 is available as an alternative option that can be fitted without the need for tools. For more challenging jobs, the new DuroCut 5-2 is also available and ideally suited for dense grass and light scrub.
The FSA 86 R features a new battery housing and component design, enabling users to easily insert STIHL’s high-performance
36V AP batteries, ideal for professional use. Users can take working time from 35 minutes to 60 minutes when using STIHL’s AP 200 battery.

house, and it’s through the hard work of our dedicated managing partners and estates team that we’ve been able to provide this.
“As a charity we rely on limited budgets and amazing teams of volunteers to help keep our sites maintained and improving.
“It’s been a testing time but to know people have been using our spaces and reaping the benefits of using green spaces through the pandemic means our hard work has paid off.”

Council protects all parks and green spaces forever
Liverpool residents will be guaranteed access to park and green spaces, forever, removing the threat that any might be built on or sold off, in a new strategic partnership between green space charity Fields in Trust and Liverpool City Council.
Liverpool is the first local authority to ensure local access to green space in perpetuity for all its citizens by legally protecting each of their eligible parks and green spaces.
The city council’s Cabinet committed to legally protect 100 much-loved parks and green spaces across the city, totalling over 1,000 hectares and sets the ambition that every resident will live no more than a ten-minute walk from a highquality green space.
Protected parks include local recreation grounds as well as well-known city centre destination parks and children’s playgrounds.
This landmark decision ensures there will always be local parks and green spaces available for current and future generations of Liverpudlians to enjoy.
Parks and green spaces have been vital over the last year as places to play, exercise, relax, reflect and the only safe place to meet loved ones and connect with friends and our neighbours; they will continue to be important as part of our recovery from the Coronavirus pandemic.
As part of the wider City Recovery Plan Liverpool’s Acting Mayor, Councillor Wendy Simon has committed to work with Fields in Trust and secure legal protection of Liverpool’s entire portfolio of green space. The decision is based on evidence of the health, wellbeing and community benefits they deliver.
“Liverpool is blessed to have so many stunning green spaces, and this new initiative means we can ensure everyone has access to free, local outdoor spaces for sport, play and recreation, forever,” she explained.
“The health, wellbeing and community benefits these locations deliver are priceless, demonstrated so clearly during this pandemic where they have become such a central and important part of our lives.”
BIGGA invites industry leaders to Continue to Learn
The British & International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA) has revealed that preparations are underway for the return of the BIGGA Turf Management Exhibition (BTME) to Harrogate in January 2022 with the launch of Proposal to Present for Continue to Learn.
A key component of BTME, Continue to Learn is recognised as one of the world’s leading greenkeeping education events, drawing more than 3,000 delegates each year.
The content of the programme is decided upon by BIGGA members who participate in the Members’ Choice process, whereby interested speakers are invited to pitch content for seminars and workshops and members then select what they would like to see on the Continue to Learn programme.
Continue to Learn 2022 is anticipated to be a hybrid event, combining in-person learning and online sessions following the incredible success of Continue to Learn 2021, which was hosted entirely online due to the coronavirus pandemic.
BIGGA Head of Learning and Develop Sami Strutt said: “As we begin the planning for Continue to Learn 2022 we are inviting Proposals to Present from across the industry.
“We are looking for those who have stories to tell, perhaps from their pandemic experiences, renovation projects, research and development, personal health and wellbeing and, of course, all things agronomy-related.”

Council opts for environmentally friendly weed control solution
“This is another part of Bury’s climate change commitment, alongside decarbonising council vehicles as much as possible and reducing energy use.”
Spring clean your finances and take control with help from Perennial
Living with the pandemic has exacerbated the challenging financial position experienced by many working in horticulture. According to government data for January 2021, over the course of 2020 more people have had to borrow more money and in larger amounts.
The Multevo Hot Water Weed System uses boiling water rather than traditional herbicides to tackle weeds and can also be used for chemical-free highpressure cleaning to remove grime, gum, graffiti and general sanitation of street furniture.
Councillor Alan Quinn, cabinet member for the environment, said: “Many people have expressed concerns about the council using chemicals to tackle weeds, especially around schools and play areas, and want to see chemical-free alternatives used instead.
“I share their concerns, and have therefore ordered this new vehicle as part of our review into the use of herbicides and pesticides. It will enable us to keep the borough tidier in a much greener way.
“The machine can also be used to remove chewing gum and mosses and algae from surfaces
Multevo are the sole UK supplier of Waterkracht’s range of hot water weed control equipment who have been manufacturing this type of equipment since the early 1990’s.
The equipment requires absolutely no additives to kill weeds and works by delivering an efficient low-pressure treatment accurately at 98°C to kill the cellular structure of the root using Waterkracht’s Boiling Hot water Technique.
“We’re really pleased to see yet another council opt for our environmentally friendly weed control solution and wish them every success,” said Josh Sweeney, the firm’s Director of Marketing & Growth. “We understand the pressures some councils are facing when it comes to chemicals and are confident that we can provide them with a cost effective and sustainable solution which will still provide productive outputs.”
For some groups, (which include many of those in the industry) such as those on incomes below £20,000, the self-employed and people living in rented accommodation, this has resulted in a decrease in ability to save for the year ahead. In short, it’s becoming harder to deal with unavoidable income shocks.
Perennial is addressing some of these money worries for people working in horticulture by encouraging everyone to check their financial wellbeing, regardless of their fi nancial status, to understand their financial situation and proactively manage their money.
There are a number of tools available on the Perennial website to help them manage their money. The easy-touse budgeting tool will help people to find out how they are using their money, check their fi nancial situation and receive useful hints and tips.
Perennial’s free online budgeting tool is available via the Perennial website and can be used on a desktop computer, tablet or smartphone. It is very easy to use and does not require any technical or financial expertise.
Julia Hayne, Director of Services at Perennial says: “The uncertainty of the pandemic has led to unexpected loss of income and money worries for many in horticulture, often hitting those who were already feeling financial strain. It’s also been a very difficult time for the physical and mental wellbeing of so many. We have seen that at Perennial with 27% more people coming to us for advice and support in 2020 compared with the previous year.
“We know that unplanned expenditure remains a challenge for families managing a stretched monthly budget. We can often make a positive change to people’s lives and we find that when people seek our help early, we can prevent their situation worsening. If you would like advice, information or need to spring clean your finances use our online tool or give us a call on 0800 093 8543 as soon as possible.”
Perennial’s qualified Debt Advisers are on hand to support individuals with their financial concerns, from better budgeting, talking to creditors, or more complicated issues such as bankruptcy. They also work with individuals to ensure that they are receiving the government support they are entitled to.

New porcelain patio project completed with NCC paving jointing
This new 70m 2 porcelain patio in Chorely was laid by CR Services at the end of the normal season for external porcelain tile installations.
The owners wanted to ensure that from as soon as possible and throughout the next season, they could keep it sparkling clean, and prevent any dirt build-up, but without damaging and blasting out the pointing, by frequently pressure-washing their new patio to remove all types of spillages and dirt build-up.
As a result, the owners did extensive research to find a robust external porcelain jointing product that was suitable for installation at that time, meaning in lower temperatures and possible wet-weather, as well as
being resistant to staining and that could take frequent cleaning by high-pressure jet-washing.
Fortunately, they found CR Services and their suppliers NCC Streetscape, who provided the solution using GftK’s vdw 815plus paving joint mortar, and in the owner’s choice of a slightly contrasting Stone-Grey colour.
GftK’s vdw 815+ is a tough 2-part epoxy resin bases product, specifically designed for narrow joints from just >3mm wide, with no wet-weather limitations and this is non-staining and easily takes frequent pressure jet-wash cleaning.

British Association of Landscape Industries launches fresh new brand
The British Association of Landscape Industries has unveiled its new look ahead of its 50th year in business in 2022, marking the start of a new chapter in the Trade Association’s prestigious history.
Spearheading the brand is the Association’s fresh, contemporary new identity, boldly updated for 2021 while celebrating its heritage.
Following a three-year development cycle which saw the team at Landscape House carry out research and analysis, a series of stakeholder interviews and a brand positioning exercise,
several significant changes were decided upon to improve the Association’s continued efforts to promote, support and inspire its members, the wider landscape services industry and the public.
From 1st April 2021, Association members who have passed its stringent vetting procedures will be referred to as Accredited members, replacing the previous ‘Registered’ name.
The team at Landscape House, supported by its board of directors, felt the replacement term was a more suitable choice for explaining the process companies went through in
order to attain accreditation. Affiliate, the label used to promote members offering trade and public-facing products and services has been dropped in favour of Supplier, a word that better describes that category of membership. So, in simple terms, a Registered Affiliate will now be known as an Accredited Supplier.
The brand refresh has also brought with it changes to the way the Association communicates, including a focus on high quality content to inform, educate and inspire. It will use its position as a thought-leader in British landscaping to draw attention to issues affecting the industry and
lobby government, as well as developing its technical support offering. The rebrand will also bring a new approach to the Association’s identity, dropping the acronym ‘BALI’. Often confused with non-industry terms, the Association’s new identity advertises a greater public-friendly position, simplified so it only displays the full company name that better describes the service offer.
“We recognised, through talking with key stakeholders, that we needed to make changes to our brand to continue to build on our strong foundation and provide the high level of customer service our members expect.
“Next
Expect further announcements of what we have planned later this year.”

If these areas are prone to wear and rutting then the ground can become boggy and incapable of withstanding vehicular or pedestrian traffic.
Terram GrassProtecta has been developed with an oscillated mesh structure which is designed to increase traction and improves slip resistance by 97% compared to standard meshes.
It will protect and strengthen the ground of heavily trafficked surfaces.
It is available as three options to suit all applications.

Paving jointing projects for natural stone
This granite sett driveway repointing works, completed by CR Services, was for a customer operating his building business from the storage yard at his home, which was accessed by a private granite cobble paved road that was also used for access by a neighbouring joinery company and their vans / deliveries.
The farmer of the adjacent fi elds also had right of access along the road for his tractors. In late Autumn, 2015 the owner had refurbished the granite paving and used traditional sand and cement to refurbish the joints on the total 330m2 of granite paving.
Unfortunately, by late 2016 this had already started to crack and break-up after less than a year, with total failure inevitable.
The owner decided to try and find a way repoint the cobbles with a product that would be able to withstand the exposure to harsh winter weathering and heavy vehicle traffic. Inevitably their research led to NCC Streetscape, who were able to solve all these problems with the use of GftK’s vdw 850plus, a unique, high performance and extremely durable, 2-part epoxy resin based paving joint mortar.
The works were completed by C.R.Services in early 2017 using a phased approach to facilitate minimal disruption, which inevitably also meant that the repointing works had to be carried out in the full range of cold, wet, dry, and hot conditions, but all of this was no problem using vdw 850+.

Headland brings strength and control to new season growth Attraxor helps control Poa annua
With thoughts beginning to turn to the application of early season nutrition, Headland Amenity have a wide range of fertiliser products to get growth going this spring.
Multigreen CRF is a popular choice with golf and sports clubs alike, to overcome the effi cacy issues associated with some granular feeds in high moisture situations, as nutrient release is governed solely by soil temperature.
Multigreen features urea or potassium nitrate prills within a permeable polymer-resin coating which start to release their solubilised nutrients once soil temperatures rise above 6°C - in line with grass growth.
For areas featuring heavier soil types, Headland’s XTEND range of slow release granular
and soluble fertilisers are another effective option –providing two to three months of consistent nutrient release from a single application.
Designed to fill the gap between traditional outfield and fine turf products, the H-Cote range of mini-granular controlled-release fertilisers are suitable for use in all coarse and close mown turf situations including golf tees and fairways, sports pitches and racecourses.
Specifically for fine turf, Greentec Mosskiller Pro is an ideal spring starter or low temperature hardener on amenity turf where prolonged colour, but not too much growth, is required.

Quality sand aids healthy sports pitches
A high-quality sand is vital to the overall health and performance of a sports pitch.
Mansfield Sand has pioneered the development and production of premium silica sand-based products for over 170 years.
The company provides a wide range of innovative products for sports, landscaping, and equestrian uses. These include stadium and training ground facilities; championship golf courses and world class show jumping arenas.
With a wide range of sandbased products available, it can sometimes be difficult to know which one will be most suitable.
“Ideally a good quality silica sand dressing, aerated into the surface is all winter sports pitches require,” explains Gary Cunningham, Football and
“However, it is important to select the right industry grade of sand which is suitable for sports dressing application.
“A quality washed sports grade silica sand will be graded between 30 and 45 and each grade will be proceeded by two letters which designate the quarry they are supplied from. The lower the number, the coarser the sand is and vice versa - the higher the number, the finer the sand.
“At Mansfield Sand, we predominately provide two grades of silica sand to the sports market, MM35 and MM40 –which are sourced directly from the company’s Two Oaks quarry in Mansfield.”

Attraxor plant growth regulator (PGR) has helped Warren Moss – Head Greenkeeper at Dudsbury Golf Club, to suppress Poa annua and increase the quantity of Bent grass on the greens.
Attraxor, a new BASF product, was recommended to Warren by David Chammings from Agrovista Amenity, and he was pleased to see an immediate response.
Attraxor has been shown to effectively regulate growth of managed amenity turf. The active substance, Prohexadione, inhibits the giberrelic acid pathway, which results in a
reduction of turf height and turf biomass. Root growth is also promoted through the use of Attraxor whilst turf colour and quality are maintained.
On David’s advice, Warren applied Attraxor at a low dosage of 0.375 kg/ha. The recommended application for Poa annua management is from 0.5 kg/ha to 0.65 kg/ha.
Warren chose overcast mornings to apply the product using Greenmaster Vitalnova Stressbuster and 2.5 kg/ha of N to prevent any yellowing.

Forever flexible with Toro large golf sprinkler bodies
Toro sprinklers dating back to the 1960s are forwards compatible and can be easily upgraded with the latest design features.
Plus, Toro technology can be easily fitted into a different brand’s sprinkler head, too.
And it’s not an arduous job either; the Toro 600 series from 1967 and the 700 series first seen in the 1990s for example can be interchanged with Toro sprinkler head conversion assemblies in a literal minute!
The sprinkler stays in the ground, the riser pops out and is replaced. It’s that simple to benefit from the latest innovative market-leading technology.
Robert Jackson, water division sales manager at Reesink Turfcare, the sole Toro distributor in the UK for irrigation products, says: “Longevity has been key to Toro’s irrigation strategy since its early development.
“For some clubs, looking to update an ageing irrigation system could mean the requirement of a specialist and months of delays to play, but with Toro’s upgradeable sprinklers that is not the case.
efficient
In one quick fix you can address specific irrigation needs and problems. Cut down some trees and got a windier course?
You need a sprinkler that can throw under the wind with a lowered trajectory. Easily done without the need for a spade.
Are your components old?
Toro’s the solution, not just replacing old for new, but for more durability.
Do you want to achieve a strict start-stop arc setting without unwanted movement or constant re-adjustments, eliminate dwell points and subsequent pooling or ensure even distribution?
Tick, tick, tick from Toro, with no disruption.
But it’s not all about fixing the past. When choosing your new irrigation system, it’s very much about the ‘now’ and with all Toro large golf sprinklers forwards compatible, it’s definitely all about the future too.
Water management kept to budget with ClearWater
With water conservation and savings more important than ever now ClearWater has seen a number of new customers wanting to invest in its unique water recycling system as they look to go green and keep to budgets.
The system also ensures compliance with current legislation. It will treat and recycle all wash water from any machine or vehicle wash off, ensuring that up to 97 per cent of water is recycled.
Any water that is lost through evaporation over time is naturally topped up by rainwater.
This helps make the system an extremely efficient, selfsustainable, closed loop wash off, with customers benefiting
from a minimum of two powerful hose outlets.
After testing carried out on systems, ClearWater estimates that customers can expect to save on average up to 500,000 litres of water a year. Water rates are certainly not getting any cheaper.
New ClearWater customer and owner of Clone Valley Golf Club, Tom Smith, said: “The system is great we installed when erecting new sheds to ensure compliance and water savings.”
With the current climate in mind, ClearWater has introduced new in-house, interest free payment schemes.

Planning and maintaining landscape irrigation brings all round benefits
An automated irrigation system is one of the best ways to keep new landscapes healthy and minimise water waste.
With up-front planning and advice, automated irrigation will help to ensure long-term satisfaction.
“Working with a local contractor will assist greatly in selecting appropriate plant species and grouping those with similar watering needs will aid planning,” explains Peter Longman, Rain Bird Europe. “The more zones planned, the more irrigation can be customised.
“Any system will not perform as well as it should with inferior components. Something as simple as selecting the correct type of pipe can mean the difference between a system that lasts and one that requires constant attention.
“Checking on-site water pressure and using the most appropriate sprinklers is essential as low or high pressure can affect performance.
“2Smart irrigation controls will automatically adjust watering based on rain, soil moisture, evaporation and plant water use.
“Rain sensors will stop the system from operating unnecessarily whilst a soil sensor measures moisture at the root zone.
“Watering at the right time of day is also important - the best times are late afternoon, evening and just before sunrise.
“Adjusting the schedule regularly to account for seasonal weather will help to prevent overwatering.”

Vitax Amenity continues to offer comprehensive solutions
Carl Welsh, Vitax’s managing director, says: “Vitax has developed its online presence over the past few years and the decision to produce an e-brochure supports a significant shift in how the business is adapting to working with customers. The creation of the e-brochure is the next step in making all products readily accessible to everyone in the industry.
“The speed of which it can be changed to incorporate new products and sent out to our customers was at the forefront of our mind during its development, as well as its capability to include more technical information about each product’s composition.”
Vitax has been manufacturing amenity and horticultural products for over 100 years. During this time a reputation has been established for producing a comprehensive range of products with a strong emphasis on quality, efficacy and cost effectiveness.
Reflecting the growth in the company and scope of the projects undertaken, Maidstone-based Day Tree Fellers have just purchased their 4th GreenMech woodchipper – going from the pedestrian CS100 unit up to the mighty 45hp EVO 165D-45LE unit in the space of just six years.
“At the time we went for the 4” CS100 pedestrian unit, and quickly followed that up with two turntable QuadChip 160’s.”
As the nature of their work evolved to span both domestic and commercial projects, it became evident that they needed even more productivity and the ability to process even larger timber.

As standard, the entire EVO range features an all-steel bonnet and additional fan to help reduce overall sound power and sound pressure. This, combined with GreenMech’s disc-blade chipping system, means the EVO is one of the quietest chipper collections available.
Vitax Amenity has launched its first ever e-brochure to meet the growing demand for in-depth product information which can be easily downloaded and accessed at the touch of a button.
Providing specialist products for sport and amenity turf both in the UK and overseas, Vitax Amenity has established a reputation for
producing a comprehensive range of products with a strong emphasis on quality, efficacy and cost-effectiveness.
Its latest decision to develop an e-brochure follows a significant update to its website and has been welcomed by customers across the globe as relationships continue to grow and be nurtured.
In 2005, Vitax acquired Supaturf, a company with an equally strong history of manufacturing products specifically aimed at the professional sports market, with particular expertise in linemarking machinery and paints.
Vitax and Supaturf combined are able to offer everything that the amenity and sports turf industries could want for, ranging from fertilisers, control chemicals, wetting agents, line-marking, spreaders and sprayers.

Delivering powerful, yet surprisingly quiet, performance the EVO 165D-45LE hasn’t missed a beat since Owner Les Day took delivery of the unit in December 2020.
Les, along with one of his sons, started Day Tree Fellers in 2015 before another two sons came on board to complete the current line-up. “When we first started out, we looked at a couple of different chipper manufacturers and were instantly impressed by GreenMech’s willingness to help and their general service level” explains Les.
“What the EVO 165D-45LE lacks by way of a turntable, it more than makes up for in other areas! It works so quickly offering fantastic throughput rates but I particularly like that you can manually slow the feed rollers down to process any particularly large diameter timbers.
“The higher horsepower Kubota diesel engine handles this with ease and will hopefully give us years of reliable service.

KAR UK wins Kasco European Distributor of the Year
Spring into the first cut with Countax
As soon as the ambient soil temperature rises in spring our British lawns put on a growth spurt and it is time for the first cut.
To make the most of your investment it is worth looking at a Countax garden tractor to fit the bill in all respects.
Firstly, it is designed for the British garden and built in Britain for the vagaries of our weather. Secondly, it will make gardening life a whole lot easier.
The first spring mow needs to be at a high height, gradually lowering the cutting deck as the season progresses.
This is easily done with the Countax deck height setting ranging from 101mm/4” down to 12mm/1/2”. There is a choice of cut and collect, mulching using an optional mulching kit
or a High Grass Mulching deck for rougher areas. For those of you who like a striped lawn, you cannot better the Countax Powered Grass Collector (PGC) and roller system, powered by the tractor’s Power Take-Off (PTO). Which brings us to the PGC+, the accessory that transforms a Countax C or B Series into that multi-use, year-round workhorse.
The PGC+ is a cassette system that allows you to quickly and easily switch accessories. It means you only need one machine to maintain the lawn, paddock, drive, path and other garden areas.
The Grass Sweeper cassette comes as standard and clicks into place with brushes that rotate at over 1100rpm to sweep grass clippings, fallen leaves and other debris into the hopper, even when the grass is wet.
Spring is also a good time to scarify the lawn to rid it of winter accumulated moss and thatch and that is simply done by switching to the easy-to-insert Scarifier cassette. Which means you don’t need to spend money on a separate scarifier.
So, all-round a Countax will work for you through the seasons. Using the PTO you can also drive other accessories such as a powered broadcast spreader, which is ideal for spreading salt
and grit on paths and drives to keep them ice-free.
Choose a B Series Countax and you have the benefit of the unique 4TRAC four-wheel-drive system giving you a ‘go anywhere, mow anywhere’ garden tractor capable of tackling slopes, mud and rough ground. It also makes the perfect partner for a snowblade to clear your way in the depths of winter.
KAR UK is delighted to have recently been awarded Kasco’s European Distributor of the Year 2020.
For over 50 years, Kasco – a family-owned company, has offered world-leading water quality solutions. Today, the company manufactures high quality products such as fountains, surface aerators, diffused aerators, de-icers, circulators and beneficial bacteria to aquatic industries – all of which are designed to improve water quality.
KAR UK – the leading wholesaler of irrigation equipment in the UK, distribute the innovative Kasco product portfolio, and over the past couple of years has seen an increasing demand for the products.
This latest award follows the Kasco Top Sales Growth Award which KAR UK was presented with in 2019.
“It came as a bit of a shock to me,” admitted KAR UK Regional Sales Manager Roger Lupton. “We were aware that we had an exceptionally good and buoyant year with Kasco products, but we didn’t know quite to what extent.
“To be awarded this, above all the other companies throughout Europe is a great achievement – especially during a pandemic. It is very pleasing to be recognised for all the work we are doing with Kasco.
“There is a reason why the Kasco brand is so popular,” continued Roger. “The products stand out for their reliability and for their features such as interchangeable nozzles and a large range of motor units. Quite simply, they are premium products.”
Roger was also quick to praise the suppliers, installers, operators, and specialist contractors that work closely with KAR UK.
“At the end of the day we bring the Kasco products into the country,” he said. “But we then distribute it to several other companies, who in turn help to get the products to the end user. It is because of them, their efforts and hard work, as to why we have received the award from Kasco –so I would like to say a big thank you to everyone we work with.”
Commenting on KAR UK’s award, Joe Holz, Kasco’s International Sales Manager, said: “KAR has been a terrific distributor partner with Kasco and we are proud to present them with the 2020 European Distributor of the Year Award.
“Their knowledge of and commitment to Kasco fountain and aeration equipment has propelled them to this top spot. KAR UK’s commitment to marketing, training, and customer service makes them a great partner with Kasco and an excellent resource for knowledge and service for the UK market. We have no doubt in their continued growth.”

Green-tech raises the bar by offering Degree Apprenticeships
Green-tech is providing its employees with the opportunity to study for a higher education qualification whilst continuing to work, by offering Degree Apprenticeships.
Designed in partnership with employers; higher and degree apprenticeships offer a higher education qualification, work experience and industry-relevant skills to create graduate calibre individuals within an organisation. Leeds Trinity University will be running the Degree Apprenticeships for Green-tech.
Green-tech has long since invested in sourcing, developing, and retaining ‘talent’. In 2017 they embraced the Government’s Apprenticeship scheme which saw them take on several apprentices. It was a huge success with a 75% retention rate and the company continues to take on apprentices directly from school or college. Their latest being a Supply Chain Warehouse Operative Apprentice.
Three of Green-tech’s team across the marketing, IT and purchasing departments have enrolled in the Degree Apprenticeship courses. Kate Farrer, Marketing Executive has recently started
a Digital Marketing Degree, George Shepherd a software engineering degree and Sarah Whitley a Supply Chain degree.
George started with the company as a customer service apprentice. After successful completion he progressed to the online and marketing department and has recently been promoted to IT Systems Automation Lead.
This role sees him operating as a support link between the commercial and IT departments, working with their CRM system, SAP Business One. George has been encouraged to advance further and is being supported to undertake a three-year software engineering degree.
George comments: “Enrolling for a degree apprenticeship supported by Green-tech will give me the opportunity to progress personally and professionally which will help me to achieve my goals for later life.
“I will be working my full-time job which will really help with my apprenticeship, I’ll be developing my knowledge, gaining a degree
Sarah Whitley is Green-tech’s buyer. She forecasts and buys the thousands of product lines Green-tech sell. She also looks after all pricing enquiries for non-stock items. Sarah is undertaking a BSc (Hons) Professional Practice in Supply Chain Leadership which will take her 3.5 years to complete.
Sarah adds: “Throughout my employment, I have always made it clear that I’ve wanted to progress professionally, and Green-tech has always been receptive to that. During the four years I’ve worked here, I’ve been promoted three times, each time gaining more responsibility.
Studying for a work-based degree will aid me in becoming better in my current role so that I can better support the Greentech team and it will also give me a professional/academic qualification that I wouldn’t have had otherwise.”
The apprentices will gain a ‘debtfree’ University Degree; there will be no costs or tuition fees to fund themselves, and they will study part time at Leeds Trinity University to build on their workplace experience.

Spring forward to maintenance
The arrival of spring turns thoughts to renovations and maintenance. Jane Carley looks at some of the latest products and how grounds managers are using them.
Product Update
Overseeding can offer a great solution for seasonal turf maintenance as it allows the pitch to be played on after treatment with quick, visible results within a matter of weeks, suggests PSD Groundscare, supplier of the Eliet range of turf maintenance equipment.
The pedestrian DZC450 and DZC600 overseeders from Eliet are exclusive to the market in terms of how they deliver seed into the ground.
The DZC600 (60 cm working width) or its little brother the DZC450 (45 cm) introduce the seed to a target depth of 5-7mm by cutting a slot and accurately dropping the seed into the grooves.
Blades are Tungsten-tipped on the DZC600 giving up to 300 hours worth of work even on sandy root zones. This process can be done in a single pass at 25mm spacings at varying seeding rates from 15 gm-35 gm per m2
On more bare areas, a double pass can be carried out, ‘up and down’ and ‘left to right’ for example, putting twice as much seed down in the area, doubling grass coverage and speed of recovery.
The powered rubber roller at the back of the machine ensures that there is good contact between the soil and the seed by pressing the earth down providing excellent soil to seed contact, which is essential to encourage germination.
The provision of favourable germination and establishment conditions are essential to the success of any overseeding operation, suggests Redexim
Seeds will differ in terms of the amount of light, moisture and temperature required which will therefore determine the time and the method in which it should be delivered.
The Redexim Speed-Seed range delivers seed into pockets generated by a spiked sarel roller, with the seeds swept in via a rear-mounted brush.
The recently re-modelled range features a new variable seed rate calibration system –which makes ratio adjustments simple and accurate, while a new mixing bar and individual seeding elements ensure even distribution and less wastage.
Available in four width options from 1.1 2.3m, the Speed-Seed is ideal for fine turf and quick delivery across larger areas where drill lines need to be avoided. For improved seed to soil contact, or in situations where high germination rates are the priority, disc seeders could be considered.
The Overseeder 3D collection features discs spaced at 75mm which create a groove in which to accurately deposit the seed at depths of up to 30mm, before the roller seals the ground.
Individually mounted coulters follow ground contours and there is with a dedicated 3D 1575 lightweight version for fine turf applications.
Redexim Double Disc machines deliver seed into the soil via two rows of discs, in slits 3cm apart and to a maximum depth of up to 20mm.
The Double Disc range comes complete with three-point linkage as standard, but a trailed wheel kit is available as an option.

The
Renovation and maintenance Infinicut has introduced a new adaptation kit to transform a John Deere 2500 Triplex into a highly productive, lightweight, 2.14m cut width dedicated sports turf mower.
The simple-to-fit kit was designed to specifically meet the criteria required to maintain sports turf and address the failings of existing optionstraditionally re-purposed golf turf units.
The new adaptation kit includes all that’s required to affix 76cm Infinicut cutting reels and large capacity grass boxes to an existing John Deere power unit with zero fabrication/hole drilling or other modification required to the original traction unit.
In addition, a selection of maintenance cassettes from the TMSystem range are also compatible with the new set-up.
The JD 2500 was chosen as the donor traction unit to fulfil the strict design brief set out by the Infinicut design team. Thought was given to ensure the end product was lightweight, gentle to turf through torquing and turning and minimised soil surface compaction.
It also features a functional, forward-facing middle grass basket that is easy to install and remove.
Coupled to the JD 2500 are three Infinicut reels, utilising SmartCut technology to offer a highly productive 2.14m cutting width.
The Infinicut cylinders come with renowned quality of cut and the confidence that these units are trusted by some of the most revered venues in the world including Real Madrid, Wimbledon and many more topflight facilities.
With category 1 linkage tractor mounting as standard (other categories on request), a weight tray is incorporated in the frame design, offering the option to add up to 250kg of top weight to gain the desired penetration depth.
This tray is also useful for the transportation of tools and equipment.
A removable floating roller with adjustable scraper bar pushes back any plucked divots without closing the penetrations.
The mounted deep aerator attachment uses nine heavyduty aeration discs on a 50mm stainless steel axle which bolts onto the carrying frame; the discs will penetrate up to 180mm.
For fine turf, a mounted deep slitter attachment is equipped with slender, hardened blades with knife edges.
This gives clean penetration into the soil, leaving the surface free from any turf tearing or plucking.
A hollow tine corer bolts onto the carrying frame in the same way as the aerator or slitter. Revolving discs are fitted with hollow spoon tines to delve into the turf surface to remove a 75mm core.
The Koro FTM, supplied by Campey Turfcare, has undergone upgrades along with additional of the Universe rotor to give the cleanest fraise mow possible.
The balance has been analysed and enhanced, resulting in a lighter, steadier experience by redistributing weight and applying a removable 100kg.

This redistribution of weight means a much smaller tractor can be used because the centre of gravity has been shifted towards the tractor making it easier to lift.
Solid locking pins now offer greater consistency and the overall performance is improved due to the re-designed Universe rotor and angled cross conveyor. A new angled cross conveyor has been introduced to move material evenly with perfect belt tracking.
Also from the Campey stable, Dakota provides a wide range of versatile spreaders. Electric and manual models are available to suit any budget with the latest models coming with a 4.3inch LCD control panel, using the first universal RAM mount that allows you to attach the display at a point convenient to you.
The display contains reference guides for adjusting the spinner paddles and rate settings, helping to provide the most even spread possible and the user is also able to take full control of the brakes and vibrator on equipped units, and the start/stop, throttle up and down on the engine units equipped with a power pack.
All Turf Tender models spread wet or dry material with the dual-spinner allowing operators to choose anywhere in the range of extremely fine to heavy dressing using the easy-tooperate calibration system.
Machinery in action
Community clubs green up Manchester-based Unicorn Athletic JFC is reaping the benefits of taking charge of its grounds maintenance programme with equipment from Campey Turf Care Systems.
The club is home to 34 teams and operates at different schools and pitches in the local area, with their main site used by the under-eights Saturday club, youth teams from 14 years old and upwards and their open age group teams.
The New Holland Boomer 35, Trimax 190 Striker and SISIS Quadraplay will be vital for the community club as they aim to improve the condition of their site.
The story of their pitches over two decades is a sadly familiar one, with council budget cuts in the council leading to less and less maintenance and inconsistent mowing.
For Darren Storey, treasurer, part-time groundsman and operator of the walking football team, taking control of the maintenance will allow the club to give their teams the pitches they deserve.
“We started the process by speaking to one of the subcontractors that works for Trafford Council, Paul Grange, who has worked on our pitches and helped us in the past.
“Campey has been ace, from costing, to specifications and the equipment that we needed, and more importantly could afford.
“We put a grant application into the Football Foundation which they helped us with, and without that, we wouldn’t have the equipment.”
Darren and the club are already looking at ways they can improve the wider area. Because it is a community field, they want to make it better for everyone, not just the players, and a part of this plan is creating a Friends of Smiths Field group.
By doing this they hope to raise funds that will allow them to improve the landscaping, put in nature and fitness trails and complete other projects to make it a more usable area for the wider community.
Bonnyton Thistle Football Club now have complete fl exibility and control over the maintenance of their full-size synthetic pitch thanks to the recent purchase of a Verti-Groom EV and Dragmat from Redexim
Having previously hired in sub-contractors, the switch to an in-house programme has not only saved the club money but has improved the condition of the playing surface.
The synthetic surface was installed at the club in Kilmarnock three years ago and hosts training for all age groups from seven upwards, along with matches at the weekends.

The pitch is inspected regularly against the FIFA standards by Sports Labs which was the first port of call for Ian Higgins – Club and Communities Development Manager and Pitch Maintenance Manager – to discuss the purchase of equipment.
“The results we were getting with our contactors was not up to the standard we were looking for, so Sports Labs pointed us in the direction of Ian Lauder at Redexim,” explains Ian.
“We decided on a Dragmat which we’re using for the regular brushing three times a week, and a Verti-Groom EV to conduct a deeper, more thorough brush once a week.”
“In a short space of time, these two machines have already improved both the visual appearance and playability of our pitch. Before, we had issues with fi bres laying fl at causing the ball to ‘slip’, not to mention the potential hazard this posed to the players.
“Now the fibres are upright improving not only the safety but the look of the pitch.”
The Redexim Verti-Groom EV features a combination of tines and brushes to decompact, redistribute and level the infill.
Its 2.0m working width means surfaces can be covered quickly, with the working depth of up to 5.5mm easily adjustable to suit conditions.
Ian adds, “The club and I are extremely grateful for the funding and support from the Suez Communities Trust Fund, without which, the purchase of the tractor and associated equipment would not have been possible.
“Thanks to this, we now have the flexibility to conduct the maintenance as and when we need to which should also help to maximise the longevity of our carpet.”
Versatile kit meets requirements
Adi Porter, Course Manager at
Greetham Valley Golf Club, has found the SISIS Flexibrush to be an ideal solution for dispersing worm casts, after the withdrawal of chemicals previously used.
Under his remit, Adi is responsible for the maintenance of two 18-hole courses and a nine-hole course, a driving range, and a bowling green.
“Worms are becoming more and more of a problem on every sports surface because we lost chemical control
options a few years ago,” he said. “Here at Greetham, the worm population has undoubtedly increased and the worm casts can be a nuisance. If they are not kept on top of then they just get smeared into the grass with the golf that is played and foot traffic, trolleys and buggies.”
In looking for a non-chemical solution, Adi, who has been a long-term user of SISIS machinery, decided to investigate the SISIS Flexibrush.
LOOKING FOR AN ALTERNATIVE?
The Flexibrush is a tractormounted brush which is equally effective to disperse top dressing and remove excess material on natural turf and on synthetic surfaces and can also be used for dew dispersal and striping for improved presentation.
With a 5.35 metre working width, its brush sections float to follow ground contours and the outer sections fold for transport and storage.
“It is a fantastic, quick and cost-effective way of removing or dispersing worm casts,” says Adi. “What really sold it to me is the size of it – some of the other brushes on the market for outfields and fairways are a lot narrower.
“It is very productive, and we can easily do 36 holes in a day. I also like the fact that it folds up quickly – you can easily move it about the course. We will also use it for brushing before mowing to stand the grass up because it provides a better cut. Also, in the autumn and winter months when we are not actually cutting the grass, we can still present a fairway nicely by striping with the Flexibrush.” Adi concludes.

At Tottenham Hotspur’s training complex in North London. Darren Baldwin, Head of Playing Surfaces and Estates at the club, uses a Ventrac compact tractor and a selection of attachments to help maintain the 77-acre site.
The power broom attachment is a versatile piece of equipment that can be used on hard landscaping areas such as car parks and to maintain synthetic surfaces at sports facilities.
A self-levelling feature keeps the broom horizontal at all times, and the nylon bristle cores can be changed in just a few minutes.
“We have a large selection of landscaped areas at the training centre and the Ventrac’s versatility has been fantastic. We use it extensively, especially the two brushes.
“One of them we set soft as it has more flexible and less aggressive bristles and this is used on the synthetics; it helps us relieve the compaction of the rubber crumb infill and is an integral part of our synthetic turf maintenance programme.
“The brooms are quick and easy to change and when not in use they are free-standing, which also helps with the yard management of our equipment.
“The other broom is harder and is used for the roads, car parks and paved areas. This winter it has been brilliant removing the snow from our synthetic pitches and also the roadways, enabling us to keep the site open.”

“Most people assume that Autumn is the only time we suffer with excess debris, but you’d be surprised at the volumes we still need to clear over the whole year,” says Chris Lynch, Grounds Manager.
“We’re an exposed site and on occasion, like after the storms in mid-March with gusts to 60mph, we could easily spend nearly two days clearing up, but the Whisper Twister saves a significant amount of time.”
The work the blower does on the hockey pitch keeps it free of debris which is the key factor in keeping the drainage of the pitch working to a high standard and making the carpet as presentable as possible.”
There are also health and safety benefits to the Whisper Twister’s capacity to swivel 180deg, he says.
“Our previous blower’s fi xed position meant that to operator often had to twist their body to see where they were, but the driver can operate the Whisper Twister in a natural position most of the time. The blower is also excellent for working into those hard to reach areas we used to have to do by hand.”
It also works perfectly alongside the Wiedenmann Super 500 to present pitches tidily ahead of fixtures.
Nice in France, believes that when it comes to batterypowered cylinder mowers, there is nothing that compares to the new Dennis ES-860.
After positions at Tottenham Hotspur FC, Arsenal FC and St George’s Park, Scott is now carrying out the upkeep and development of OGC Nice’s training pitches in the South of France.
“I saw the prototype at SALTEX and I could see the benefits of it straight away,” says Scott, who first insisted on putting the Dennis ES-860 to the test against other battery-powered cylinder mowers.
“I had other mowers on trial for a few weeks and this enabled me to assess them side-by-side,” said Scott. “For me, there was no comparison– the Dennis ES-860 was the machine I wanted.”
The 85cm battery powered turf management system features 13 interchangeable cassette options provide a solution to many dayto-day maintenance tasks such as cutting, scarifying, brushing, slitting and verticutting. Traditional G860 cassettes will also fit the ES-860.
An LCD keypad screen is an integral feature of the handlebar console providing the operator with information including speed, clip rate, service checks,
lifetime running reports and battery information.
“The battery life on the Dennis ES-860 is excellent,” continued Scott. “We were able to cut two pitches on one single charge, whereas we were struggling to complete one pitch with others.
“The charging capacity on them is incredible. For example, if we have a big day ahead and everything is getting hand cut, then we know that we can bring the Dennis ES860’s in at lunchtime and charge each of them for just 20 minutes, getting enough recharge in them to go back out and finish the job.
“I also felt the Dennis ES-860 was a robust and solid unit that was ideal for continuously using on the training ground – it is an excellent piece of engineering.”
Scott purchased four Dennis ES-860 mowers and uses them regularly throughout the week as part of his maintenance programme.
Typically, Scott relies on the brushing cassette to brush the debris off the pitches after every use; the verticutting cassette to remove any organic material and the eight-bladed cutting cassette to provide a quality cut before a match or a training session.
“There were quite a few reasons for going down the battery route,” he said. “Firstly because of the ‘environmentally friendly’ benefits, but also from a noise pollution perspective.
“Prior to having the Dennis ES860’s we kept getting asked to stop mowing because the noise was disrupting the training sessions. However, now with the ES-860 mowers we can be on the pitch next to the players while they are training. It is a vast improvement in productivity.
“I also wanted the team to be more comfortable and with these mowers you do not have any fumes, there are less vibrations and also less noise.
“The club’s owners encourage the sourcing and implementation of more sustainable and environmentally friendly practices in the way we operate which this purchase obviously supports.”

Electric performance from the Ariens Zenith E
Ariens have introduced their first commercial, all-electric zeroturn mower for the UK market.
The Zenith E is powered by a FusionCore lithium-ion battery system, an exclusive technology developed by Ariens. It is designed to provide the operator with a continuous cutting time of up to 5.5 hours on a full charge, and coverage of up to 62,726 sq/m (15.5 acres).
The Zenith E is built upon the fully commercial Ariens ‘Zenith’ platform, well known for its strength, durability and cutting performance. Combined with nextgeneration battery technology, the Zenith E is a formidable competitor to conventional commercial petrol and diesel zero-turns. It is one of the first battery-powered commercial zero-turn mowers
developed by an outdoor power equipment company.
The Zenith E has all the power and performance of its petrol counterparts without the noise, vibration and exhaust. Coupled with the increased productivity of a zero-turn, it is perfect for commercial operators looking to capitalise on the growing number of ‘green’ contracts. Fully electric, the Zenith E’s FusionCore lithiumion 56v DC battery system has four interchangeable, easily removable, sealed for life batteries, each with a 4kWh capacity.
Operators can work with minimum interruption by swapping depleted batteries with fully charged ones in seconds.

Introducing the new and improved TYM tractors
In response to Stage V emissions regulations and customer feedback, TYM is launching a new range of tractors with a host of improvements and features to provide even more value to customers.
First off the blocks are the T255 subcompact and T555 compact tractors.
Replacing the TS25, a popular model in the subcompact tractor market, is the T255. With the same features that set the TS25 apart from its competitors, the T255 offers even more with its fresh new design.
Its 25.3hp Yanmar diesel engine is Stage V compliant but avoids the need for expensive exhaust treatments such as a DPF filter, keeping costs down for the customer.
Available with a twin range HST, the new model is also equipped with auto throttle response as standard, which synchronises the HST pedals with the engine throttle for much simpler, and less fatiguing, operation.
The successor to the hugely popular T503, the T555 comes
with even more power in the same compact frame, redefining what a compact utility tractor can do and avoiding the need to compromise on manoeuvrability.
The T555’s main attraction, and where it differs most from the T503, is its high efficiency 55.9hp Yanmar 4-cylinder diesel engine, which produces more power whilst still maximising on fuel efficiency.

Automower maintains estate’s formal lawns
Lypiatt Park is a stately home surrounded by ten acres of formal gardens maintained by Husqvarna Automower robotic lawnmowers.
Homeowner of Lypiatt Park and internationally renowned artist, Daniel Chadwick, credits his four Husqvarna 550 Automower for keeping the estate’s lawns in immaculate condition all year round.
“The differences we’ve experienced between our previous lawnmowers and our four Automower 550 models are astounding. Automower works on the grounds extremely quietly,
quickly and efficiently, without the need for human interference which is brilliant,” he explained.
The lawns of Lypiatt Park feature a variety of complex shapes, but thanks to the GPS tracked Husqvarna Automower 550 models, the robotic lawnmowers are able to manoeuvre accurately and efficiently around the entire formal garden area with ease, navigating narrow passages, obstacles and handling slopes of up to 45%. Furthermore, as a result of the mower’s lightweight features, no visible track marks are left, ensuring a carpet-like appearance.

The battery that knows what it’s doing
Intelligent Lithium-Ion batteries are the heart of the new Mountfield cordless range.
Battery power is rapidly replacing petrol and electric cables as a lifestyle trend in gardening. All the battery lawnmowers and hand-held tools in the Mountfield range, new for 2021, are built from lightweight, robust materials.
Whether mowing, cutting, trimming or clearing, they are as powerful and long-lasting as their petrol equivalents but with none of the noise, fumes and hassle of engine maintenance.
E-Power works ‘smart’ in both the 20V and 48V battery systems. In the freedom100 Series of lawnmowers and handheld tools, the 20V battery has a microchip.
The Smart Tool Recognition System recognises the type
of tool and tunes the power appropriately to maximise battery life and performance of the machine being used.
The Mountfield E-Power batteries, developed, tested and produced at STIGA’s Italian plant, were still going strong after 600 charges. “Our new battery is a real game changer,” says Gary Tully, sales and marketing director of STIGA UK.
“For the first time there is a battery powered lawnmower suited to small gardens with pocket handkerchief sizes lawns and significantly areas of grass in country houses.”
Mountfield is owned by STIGA UK Limited and the lawnmowers and hand-held gardening tools being launched this year are all produced at the company’s Italian plant.

Using the Power Boost technology, a feature available across all GreenSeries products, the battery is able to automatically increase or decrease the power output only when needed, maximising the overall run time of the battery.

Track Manager, Darren Bissett, says Hamilton Park’s turf will be more than ready for the start of their flat racing season scheduled to begin in May.
One huge positive for 2020 was that local grounds care dealer, Fairways GM, delivered two new Jacobsen mowers - the HR500 Rotary Mower for the track and the TR320 for Hamilton Park’s extensive fine turf areas.
“During the racing season we like to cut the day before a fixture, and then again 48 hours afterwards,” he explained “Height of the cut is set at 6cm for the next month or so and when racing starts, we’ll allow it to grow a bit longer before cutting it to around 9cm.
“Changing the height of cut on the decks takes around half an hour and it’s a case of moving just ten pins, so it’s very straightforward.”

Rob usually overseeds the greens between one and three times a year, the last time was September 2020 – the germination from which is still visible. “J Fescue delivers high shoot density and strong colour which lasts,” he said. “Ordinarily, I would be
quality cultivars included in J Premier Fairway has meant that the artificial fairway mats that members were required to use over the winter period are a thing of the past.
