The Landscape Institute (LI) has announced the creation of a new forum for the parks and green space sector.

“For some time, many parks and green space practitioners have lacked a professional home,” said LI PresidentElect Jane Findlay. “The LI is committed to supporting all landscape professionals.

“A crucial step in fulfilling this aim is promoting the role parks and green spaces play in our communities, strengthening the voice of practitioners working in these important places.

“COVID-19 has highlighted just how important parks and green spaces are. Now is the time for all involved in landscape, parks and place to come together.’

HTA launches virtual New Plant Awards

The HTA (Horticultural Trades Association) has announced that it will be hosting its New Plant Awards as a ‘virtual’ event this year.

The New Plant Awards are usually one of the highlights of the National Plant Show, held by the HTA in June each year. Due to the coronavirus crisis, the plant show was cancelled, but the HTA has decided to run the New Plant Awards as an independent online event in 2020.

HTA President, Boyd DouglasDavies said: “We are so excited to be able to launch a virtual version of the New Plant Awards. The Awards are an important and eagerly anticipated event within the horticulture calendar, and they allow

We hope that running the event, despite the current circumstances, will provide a much-needed boost for the industry, and provide a positive focus for the horticulture community.”

The Awards will include both a professionally judged and an online visitor vote award. In each category the judges will be deciding Bronze, Silver and Gold winners. Best in Category winners will be put forward for Best Overall Winner.

The new Forum will provide insight and guidance to the LI as it works to provide leadership and build capacity for the sector.

This new Forum will work alongside the LI’s Landscape Management Leadership Forum, which will resume activity this year – focusing on practitioners working in landscapes at scale, protected

Important to keep local green spaces open during lockdown

The CPRE has backed the Local Government Minister’s decision to write to local authorities urging them to keep making their green spaces available to residents during lockdown.

Simon Clarke, the Minister for Regional Growth and Local Government, has encouraged local authorities to keep parks and public spaces open as far as possible during the coronavirus lockdown.

In a letter to councils, he said: CPRE, the countryside charity, agree that these spaces are giving so many of us an

Chief executive, Crispin Truman, said: “Now more than ever, everyone should have access to some local green space for their health and wellbeing.

“The Local Government Minister is right to call for parks and public space to remain open and we welcome his letter to local authorities today.

“The evidence is clear that minority groups and disadvantaged communities are less likely to benefit from countryside and access to nature.

“However, the coronavirus pandemic is shining a light on the deep inequalities that exist in who is able to make use of green space or countryside near

to where they live. The evidence is clear that minority groups and disadvantaged communities are less likely to benefit from countryside and access to nature.

“Everyone should feel they belong in the countryside and we should all be able to value and care for it. There’s much that we can do to open up more quality green spaces near where people live.

“It’s heartening to hear ministers espousing the value of time outdoors, and we hope the government will follow up on this by investing in our local green spaces, Green Belt and the countryside next door.”

There was a collective sigh of relief – admittedly not a universal one – when the Government started to ease lockdown restrictions and some in the industry started to return to work.

But make no mistake, we still all face a massive challenge in 2020 and beyond. It was not surprising that The GMA announced that this year’s SALTEX was shifting to March 2021 and we are still heading for a prolonged period of uncertainty where adaptability will be all-important.

It was also timely that May saw the release of Fields in Trust’s annual ‘Green Space Index’, which suggests Britain’s parks and green spaces are at significant risk of loss to development.

And the situation could get worse, Fields in Trust in partnership with the Co-op, estimate that hundreds of thousands more people could lose their local green space in years to come.

Despite the greater recognition of the value and importance of parks and green spaces during the pandemic, Helen Griffiths, Chief Executive of Fields in Trust, said over 2.7 million people do not have a park within a short walk of home and this number is forecast to grow over the coming years. “This doesn’t have to be the case and that’s why we’re calling for a national strategy to recognise their value by ensuring access to parks and green spaces is guaranteed both now and in the future in areas where they are most needed,” she added.

It is a call that TSP Media Ltd backs wholeheartedly, along with the continuing campaigns of the API and others to ensure this generation of children still get to enjoy high quality play facilities and understand the value of outdoor activities. This issue we take a look at both Play & Activity and Professional Groundscare as we combine our June and July

Third of UK growers will be out of business by end of 2020

A new industry report conducted by The Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) reveals that the government’s current proposed aid package does not work for the horticultural industry and that a third of UK growers claim they will be insolvent by the end of June because of the impact of coronavirus.

In response to the findings, the nation’s favourite celebrity gardeners, along with the HTA who conducted the survey amongst the UK’s ornamental grower businesses, are calling for the Government to act now and support growers before it is too late.

The HTA is asking for a compensation scheme to be set up and claims that the UK Government’s aid package simply does not work for the horticultural industry.

Less than one in five growers have received help through the Government’s business support measures, while just 1% has received financial support from the government’s Coronavirus Business Interruption Loans scheme (CBILS).

Current UK Government support does not consider the total loss of annual income for growers, which is largely seasonal from March to June. Meanwhile, over three-fi fths of growers (62%) said that they were not eligible for business support grants, while nearly four in five (79%) growers are not entitled to any kind of rates relief.

In the Netherlands, the Government has announced a scheme to help its industry while at the same time leaving garden centres open, meaning that Dutch growers will be perfectly positioned to supply

BASIS launches new online learning platform

BASIS has launched a new digital learning platform –the BASIS Classroom – that supports members in advancing their professional development from home.

Stephen Jacob, BASIS CEO, explains that the BASIS Classroom is a free ‘members only’ platform that contains a selection of voluntary digital training sessions on an array of subjects surrounding crop production, turf management and environmental protection.

“Members can log-in to the platform and will be presented with a choice of topics applicable to their qualification. Once selected, members will be taken through to an online exercise that may include presentations, videos or even a quiz,” he says.

“The software is designed, so that exercises cannot be skipped, which ensures the appropriate amount and quality of training is delivered and CPD points are rewarded accordingly at the end of the session.

“It’s also worth noting that the courses will be available online for a year after first posting, so members can participate at a convenient time,” says Stephen.

The training will be put together by companies that want to share knowledge with members, but no longer have events as a platform to do so. The first two companies to submit a session were Origin Fertilisers and Certis and these are now live online.

Mandy McAulay, Origin Fertilisers marketing manager, explains that the company already has a strong digital focus, so BASIS’ new offering really complements the business.

“Our training session focuses on reducing ammonia and nitrous oxide emissions through appropriate fertiliser choice. It consists of an animated presentation with a voiceover, followed by a series of questions at the end,” she says.

“We’re always looking to broaden our advisory outreach, so the BASIS Classroom gives us the ideal platform to reach out to and educate members. This is especially important during a time when we’re unable to run ‘merchant meetings’ that are normally accredited by BASIS.”

Keeping in with the theme of environmental consideration, Kate Downes, Certis marketing communications officer, adds that their Classroom session focuses on the importance of using an integrated approach to slug control.

“We’ve prepared multimedia content, including a presentation with voiceover and videos to keep it engaging, informative and interesting. This way we hope we’ll be able to stay connected with our audience, without physically meeting with them,” she says.

“The BASIS Classroom is a great initiative, as it gives members the opportunity to continue to stay up-to-date with their CPD, but also gives us a great outreach platform that’s easily accessible to both providers and members.”

the UK market if the British sector collapses.

Gardening icon, Alan Titchmarsh, has joined forces with an army of fellow TV gardeners including Adam Frost, Chris Beardshaw, James Wong, Bunny Guinness, Joe Swift, Pippa Greenwood, Jim Buttress, Matthew Biggs, Bob Flowerdew, David Domoney, Lee Connelly (The Skinny Jean Gardener) and Matthew Wilson, to help the industry by asking the millions of gardening lovers across the UK to show their support.

The scale of the challenge for UK growers is enormous. While some plants can be distributed through mail order and home deliveries, there are hundreds of millions of bedding plants in production - equal to the land area of Liverpool - and ordinarily 60% of UK plant sales go through independent

garden centres at this peak trading period.

James Barnes, Chair of the HTA said the only way of rescuing this sector is to pursue a simple compensation scheme like the system announced by the Dutch Government, which will save its horticultural industry. “We should do the same,” he added. “However, the cost of this scheme would be significantly reduced by allowing garden centres to sell plants and gardening equipment as soon as possible.

“Horticulture not only provides a great deal of grow your own produce but also contributes to the positive physical and mental wellbeing of gardening. Gardening is one of the UK’s biggest hobbies with over 23 million gardeners throughout the country.”

Climate and Biodiversity Action Plan alongside 2029 ‘net zero’ pledge

The Landscape Institute (LI) has announced how it, its members and the wider landscape sector can best tackle the climate and biodiversity crisis.

The science has been abundantly clear: we need to take immediate action. This plan builds on the work of leaders and members, staff, and an expert climate and biodiversity response panel. It has been a priority area for the LI since June 2019, when the LI board declared a climate and biological diversity emergency.

“Landscape professionals are uniquely positioned to tackle this crisis head-on,” explained LI President Adam White FLI. “For years we’ve worked with nature, designed green infrastructure, and enhanced communities, respecting the past while thinking of the future.

“We have the power to design, plan and manage resilient places and restore natural habitats – and be low carbon when we do so.”

Since the declaration last year, the LI has already begun to enact many of the recommendations outlined in the plan:

• Equipping the profession to provide solutions

• Regulating and monitoring the sector to encourage greater sustainability

• Advocating with governments and industry for measures to address the crisis

• Leading through our own sustainable business operations

“Our plan is a commitment to collaboration across our sector,” said LI Honorary Secretary Romy Rawlings.

“We hope to influence others to move more quickly on climate and biodiversity action, just as we are – by supporting our members in delivering highquality sustainable, biodiverse and climate-resilient projects.”

The Landscape Institute

Major commitments outlined in the plan include:

• Reducing the LI’s corporate carbon footprint to net zero by 2029, the year of our centenary.

• Policy, influencing and practice: New policy development on issues such as Environmental Net Gain and acceleration of technical guidance on issues such as embodied carbon in hard and soft landscape materials.

• Professional Standards: New draft Global Ethical Principles for the Landscape Profession and a new draft LI Code of Practice (to be consulted on later this year), both referencing sustainability and the climate and biodiversity emergencies.

• CPD: Our new CPD policy takes effect on 1 July 2020, requiring professional members to dedicate at least five out

of 25 hours’ CPD activity to skills related to climate resilience, sustainability and biodiversity.

• New entry requirements: We are now consulting on entry standards for future LI members that include a range of biodiversity, climate, resilience and sustainability-related skill sets.

• Celebrating the profession’s contribution: New LI Award 2020 categories include the Sir David Attenborough Award for Enhancing Biodiversity and the Excellence in Tackling Climate Change New judging criteria that include sustainability have been introduced.

• Training and support: A new programme of CPD days, webinars and local branch events will increase focus on key climate and biodiversity topics.

Ground Control launches £5m sustainability impact venture fund

A new £5m investment fund dedicated to sustainability and environmental initiatives has been launched by Ground Control, the UK’s leading supplier of award-winning landscaping and maintenance services.

Financed by five percent of Ground Control’s annual profits, the Evergreen Fund will specialise in providing seed and growth capital to early stage companies and social enterprises that are focused on delivering measurable, beneficial and sustainable environmental impact.

“As a company, we’ve always felt strongly about the environment so the launch of the Evergreen Fund is a milestone moment for Ground Control,” said Ground Control co-founder Kim Morrish.

“Launching the fund is a natural extension of our belief that business can and should be a force for good when it comes to environmental responsibility, especially during such a critical period for conservation and climate change.”

Foamstream wages urban war on Covid-19

Little did we know back in March how long the lockdown was going to last or what lay ahead in our fight to contain the life-threatening virus, Covid-19.

It is more important than ever to ensure that public spaces are safe, with governments doing everything possible to prevent the transmission of the virus.

Weedingtech offers a solution with Foamstream, a thermal system originally developed to kill weeds. Foamstream is now also widely used internationally to maintain and decontaminate public places by deep cleaning and sanitising them, effectively neutralizing viruses and preventing their transmission in the process.

In 2019 Foamstream was tested and approved for controlling viruses (inc. Hepatitis C) on outdoor surfaces, with testing following PREN 16777:2014, the European standard with which all biocides have to comply.

Weedingtech’s Foamstream technology emits near-boiling water (98 C) covered by an insulating biodegradable foam made from natural plant oils and sugars. The foam retains the heat in the water so, the heat can work effectively to neutralize its target.

Foamstream is already used by councils around the UK as well as by some of the nation’s biggest contracting companies.

Monitor chafer beetle numbers now for effective control

Now is the time to start monitoring chafer beetle numbers to allow effective control of their vulnerable offspring with entomopathogenic nematodes, advises an industry expert.

“Chafer grubs can be extremely damaging to golf courses and with limited chemical options available for controlling them, the use of entomopathogenic nematodes can be an effective and natural way to protect courses this season,” explains Dr Colin Mumford, technical manager at Bayer.

To get the application of nematodes right, Colin explains that timing is crucial. “Over the past few years, we’ve seen that chafer beetles have been emerging six weeks later than normal, so it’s important to start monitoring for activity during May and continue to do this throughout the season,” he says.

“This can be achieved by simply looking for the beetles, but to get a more definitive measurement I would use pheromone traps,” says Colin.

“The beetles are usually active for a couple of weeks, so look for the point when their numbers start to decline in the traps. You should plan to apply the nematodes three-to-four weeks after this point, as the eggs they have laid would have hatched by then.

“By getting this timing right, the nematodes will be primed and ready to attack the chafer grubs at their most vulnerable stage, when they are newly hatched or juvenile,” he says.

Colin notes that it is also important to get the application process right as well as the timing.

“Pick an overcast day with a soil temperature above 12 C to apply the nematodes, as direct sunlight will kill them and cold temperatures will limit their activity,” he says.

“Irrigate the area the day before to ensure there is adequate moisture for the nematodes, and it will help them move through the rootzone. Make sure to remove all filters from your sprayer and

spray nozzle, as this can cause blockages,” adds Colin.

He also explains that it is important to use whole packs, if possible, as some will contain more than one species, that won’t be evenly distributed throughout the pack, so by using whole packs you’ll get a good mix of species.

“For example, Bayer’s nematode product, Harmonix Tri-Nema, contains three different species of nematode,” he says. “This combination of nematodes provides better control of the grubs because each species tries to outcompete each other to become the dominant species, meaning

they are far more aggressive than they would usually be.”

Colin adds that it is important to maintain good soil moisture for a couple of weeks after the application, but warns not to over irrigate, as you will either flush the nematodes through the rootzone and down the drain, or simply drown them.

“Nematodes can be a very good option for controlling chafer grubs, but it’s important to get the timing right to target the grubs when they are at their most vulnerable to maximise control,” he concludes.

Terrain Aeration deep penetration aeration for trees

Armed with a number of solutions, Terrain Aeration have been treating trees in all types of situation for over twentyfi ve years, from back gardens to large estates right through to Royal Parks.

The Terrain Aeration Terralift machines comprise a probe which reaches one metre depth, deeper than the roots of trees (other than the major tap roots which grow straight down).

Breaking up the soil around the roots, and beyond, means that excess water will drain

away from the roots to help stop anaerobic conditions and rotting of the root system. The probe is then used to inject dried seaweed which helps keep the fissures open and backfilling the probe holes with aggregate provides a semi permanent aeration/ventilation shaft.

Terrain Aeration aerate around the roots using two-metre spacings - on most occasions one-metre inside and one-metre outside the canopy drip line, as this is where the growing roots lie. Decompacting around the

roots and injecting air into the soil increases the percentage of uptake of oxygen into the root system.

In one particular situation it was found there was a magnesium deficiency coupled with low overall soil fertility around trees in a park. This was determined using new technology to measure light transmission through the leaves on the trees to gain a reading of chlorophyll levels. The likely cause of the problem was that leaf litter is always removed and had been for a century, taking with it the natural nutrients from decaying leaves.

There was also severe compaction of the surface around the tree. A tree feed mix containing slow release general nutrients and magnesium was injected, using the Terralift’s ability to inject granular material via its seaweed carrier, forcing it upwards into the root zone of the trees.

This also avoids losing the nutrients to the grass which would occur with surface treatment. Two Terralift machines were used to carry out the process.

New real time irrigation controller has powerful features

Rain Bird’s new ESP- LXIVM two wire irrigation controller with a smart solenoid Integrated Valve Module (IVM) represents a major step forward in landscape and sports turf irrigation control.

Through real-time communication it provides the user with immediate feedback and diagnostics plus highly reliabile, closely controlled irrigation.

Installers and users can take advantage of ESP-LXIVM’s powerful features including the fact that the controller and the irrigation valve speak the same language. It can be used for applications within landscaped housing developments, schools, sports training grounds, public parks and larger commercial sites.

The Standard version has a 60 station capability whilst the

Pro offers 240 stations which can be split across 10 flow zones.16 stations can be run simultaneously and up to 40 irrigation programs can be set.

With the integrated IVMSOL control station the need for a decoder is eliminated and 50% fewer connectors are required in the field. This means simplified installation, lower future maintenance requirements and potential field repairs.

The ESP- LXIVM can communicate wirelessly and used in conjunction with Rain Bird’s IQ Platform, including the IQ4 100% browser based irrigation management system. This gives users convenient remote internet control from a smartphone, tablet or desktop PC.

Community Emergency Fund helps more than 2,000 organisations

The future of more than 2,000 sports clubs and community organisations have been secured thanks to the first awards from Sport England’s Community Emergency Fund.

To date, it has awarded more than £8 million from the fund, which was set up to help groups through immediate financial hardship caused by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

Tim Hollingsworth, chief executive, said he was “incredibly proud” that Sport England had been able to use National Lottery money to help so many organisations in such a short space of time.

“Sport and physical activity’s ability to bring individuals together and to unite communities will be of critical importance to our nation once the restrictions of lockdown begin to be lifted,” he said.

“This fund is a vital part of ensuring that grassroots

organisations who might have cash-flow issues for a variety of reasons survive.

“Whether an organisation needs £300 or £10,000, the Community Emergency Fund is there for those who are in need of support to navigate this difficult period.”

The £20 million Community Emergency Fund is part of Sport England’s overall up to £195m

package of support set up in response to the current crisis.

Lockdown conditions have had a significant impact on sports clubs and organisations - particularly for those with cash-generating facilities who are no longer able to open their doors, or summer activities facing short-term losses due to loss of membership fees or competition income. The areas of most immediate pressure for

organisations include the costs of covering rent, insurance, maintenance and utilities bills, while demand for funding has been unprecedented.

In 2019, Sport England received 4,000 applications across all our funding programmes, but the Community Emergency Fund has had over 6,500 since it was launched on 31 March.

Calls mount for playgrounds to re-open

The All-Party Parliamentary Group on a Fit & Healthy Childhood is calling for an immediate Government response to the API’s call to set out the phase in which a return to children’s outdoor play in playgrounds will be considered.

The Group has asked that the Government’s reply to this serious issue should be given to the widest possible audience; preferably at the daily press conference and followed by a Ministerial Statement in the House.

on the Government’s website for inclusion in the daily press conference: Children’s needs are being overlooked and they are facing a mental and physical health catastrophe unless they are allowed out to play. When will the government set out when and how children can play in public playgrounds again?

“Outdoor environments present a low risk of infection and with appropriate safety measures playgrounds could and should be used to help children recover from lockdown,” says Mark.

Winning solution for Kingham Hill School with Taraflex

Kingham Hill School near the Cotswold village of Kingham was originally built by the Christian philanthropist Charles Edward Baring Young in 1886. Today, with just over 340 pupils, it caters for both girls and boys aged 11-18.

When it was decided to replace and re-develop the main sports hall at Kingham Hill, the aspects of quality, performance, looks and durability would be pivotal in the final flooring specification.

The school turned to international flooring specialist Gerflor to supply

®

770m2 of its world renowned Taraflex® Performance vinyl sports flooring in Blue and Pink to provide the high performing, multi-use solution it was seeking.

Catriona Thompson, Bursar, Kingham Hill School said, “The Taraflex® flooring has so far proved to meet all of our expectations, performing well in every guise, whether during a sporting event or children’s party. We would definitely look to Gerflor for any of our future flooring needs.”

“With children in lockdown for weeks, the effects on their mental and physical health could be nothing short of catastrophic unless action is taken now,” says API Chair, Mark Hardy.

“Children have been largely absent from the Government’s plans as we loosen lockdown and this cannot continue.”

Helen Clark, lead author of the APPG’s reports, says: “The API is absolutely correct to draw the Government’s attention to the fact that, once again, they have written play out of history and it was never more needed to allow children to heal from what has been a uniquely traumatic experience with potentially lasting damage to their health and wellbeing.”

The Association of Play Industries is urging its members to submit the following question

“The current loosening of lockdown confers no benefit to younger children who cannot go out alone, and for many children their local playground is their only chance to play outside.

“There needs to be an urgent reassessment from Government regarding their position on this and a balanced approach taken: children, parents and communities cannot be made to wait indefinitely for clarification on when children can once again play outdoors.

“The damage to children from lockdown could affect them for years to come and far outweigh the consequences of the virus itself, as evidence continues to emerge that children are not badly affected by the disease.”

“After seeing the way that Timberplay equipment was used we were confident they were the partner for us – offering excellent child led play provision which would appeal to and challenge children across a wide age range.”

Many of David Lloyd sites have extensive outdoor facilities, for example tennis courts and outdoor swimming pools. This meant that they could really capitalise

on the outdoor space when it came to play, making the most of the height that outdoor space offers. Timberplay’s Landscape Architect team were able to work with the organisation to design a play space that appealed to the target market of 5-11 year olds. The first site that was worked upon was the Warrington site. The resulting play area included a tower with slide, climbing nets, fireman poles, bridges and a climbing wall. Platform Huts and bridges provide play more suitable for younger children.

As you can imagine this made a real impact with the Club community and the impact of the play investment was quickly shown in increased dwell time, and greater spend per head at the café.

Following on from the success of the Warrington installation, Timberplay began working on the new Bristol Club, again creating a bespoke design to fit the specifics of the site which was installed autumn 2019. Again this was very well received and spurred on the next development at Northwood, one of several David Lloyd Clubs in and around London.

LGA warns leisure providers falling between support packages

Leisure providers which provide vital sport and cultural services for communities are facing crisis point without access to emergency government funding or support, the Local Government Association has warned.

The LGA, which represents councils in England and Wales, has written to the Secretary of State for Culture, Oliver Dowden MP, calling for the Government to ensure leisure trusts have access to key funding to safeguard services. It says leisure providers – many of whom are charities – must be able to access the new £750 million grant-based package for the charity and social enterprise sector.

Councils are working hard to keep supporting leisure providers and facilities during the coronavirus crisis. This includes by introducing a range of emergency measures such as relaxing performance requirements, advance payments, waiving management fees and offering financial support. This is despite the impact coronavirus has had on the ability of councils to generate income.

Local authorities are responsible for a third of swimming pools, 31 per cent of grass pitches; 13 per cent of sports halls; and almost of fifth of all health and fitness facilities. With the average monthly leisure utility and energy bill costing £44,000 alone, the LGA is calling on the Government and utility companies to also agree a short-term reduction or waiving of standing charges for energy and water.

Cllr Gerald Vernon-Jackson, Chair of the LGA’s Culture, Tourism and Sport Board, said: “Councils are deeply concerned about the future of leisure trusts, who are charities, societies or community interest companies.

“Leisure facilities provide an affordable space for our communities to exercise and socialise with family and friends. They play a key role in improving our communities’ physical and mental wellbeing. If we do not act to save these vital community resources, it will cost us much more in the long-term both socially and economically. It is vital that government works with councils and leisure providers to identify any potential funding to avoid reaching a crisis point.”

Steven Scales, Client Services Director at ukactive, said: “Partnerships between local authorities and their leisure operators have never been more important, with each facing huge financial pressures as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

“Let there be no doubt; every city and town are facing the loss of vital community leisure facilities which are crucial for the physical, mental and social health of their residents. Our leisure centres are the places where our children learn to swim, our communities gather to meet, and our family and friends recover from injury or illness – we cannot let them disappear.”

It is all in the application

Effective, targeted weed control from Headland Amenity

As temperatures rise and new season growth commences, as does the ingress of many unwelcome weed species appearing in amenity and professional lawncare situations.

Headland Amenity have a comprehensive collection of selective herbicides which offer the safe, efficient and targeted control of invasive, broadleaved and difficult-to-manage weed species – all without detriment to the health of the surrounding plants.

Along with Quickfire, an economical turf herbicide which features two tried and tested active ingredients (Mecoprop-P and Dicamba) for effective broad spectrum weed control, Enstar can be safely used through knapsack equipment in addition to boom sprayers. Both products also allow for two applications per year if necessary.

The eco-friendly weed removal solution

With grass not growing due to the dry conditions weeds, those with deep root systems in particular will take advantage of this lack of competition.

To be prepared to apply herbicides as soon as the weather breaks is important as you can hit the target weeds you are looking to control. Using a knapsack is an ideal and economic method for controlling localised weed infestations through spot treatment.

The Rigby Taylor, RT Evolution sprayer, either manual or electric, together with a sprayer nozzle package ensures the correct application of product is kept very simple.

Pressure is the biggest variable when using a knapsack so a pressure regulator is included as standard which only allows spray to be applied at a consistent 1 bar.

Also included is a selected a range of nozzles, which are all matched to the pressure regulator, so the concentration of the chemical in the tank does not have to be changed - no matter which nozzle you are using.

Rigby Taylor has also a wide range of herbicides for both selective and total weed control.

Taylor

Firstly, Headland offers the now well established Cabadex formulation. Cabadex is proven to be highly effective at combating some difficult weed species that many other formulations may leave unchecked, including Yellow Suckling Clover and Common Daisy. The product can be used on young, newly sown turf as early as second leaf stage.

Also suitable for use on newly sown turf when applied at a lower rate is Enstar, a powerful three-way selective herbicide for the control of a wide range of weeds including Slender Speedwell, Creeping Buttercup and Yellow Suckling Clover.

Another effective triple-active selective herbicide for use on golf fairways, tees, sports pitches and other amenity grass is Columbus. Rainfast in just two hours, its unique micro-emulsion formulation enhances herbicide activity to make Columbus effective on weeds from across the control spectrum.

Completing the line-up is Blaster Pro foliar applied herbicide, which provides control for a range of difficult perennial weeds such as Brambles, Nettles, Docks and Thistles. Blaster Pro can be used on amenity grassland such as golf course roughs once established for at least one year, but its simple single rate of application makes it a popular choice for larger-scale spot application on roadside verges, cemeteries and industrial areas.

LockStar label update gives users more flexibility

ICL has announced an update to the UK label of its residual herbicide, LockStar, which will provide users with more effective and flexible weed control.

The label update includes extended use of the product meaning that LockStar can now be applied all-year round instead of the previous limited window between February and June.

This will provide contractors and grounds managers with the opportunity to adapt their approach and give them greater control over weed growth.

Previously, LockStar could only be used on natural surfaces not intended to bear vegetation.

However, the new label update grants the use of the product on amenity vegetation (around). This will allow for the herbicide to be applied in a wider range of situations and be used in areas such as around the base of unsusceptible shrubs, trees, plants and other amenity areas.

To control weeds that are already present, LockStar can be tank-mixed with glyphosate or a fatty acid.

LockStar, available in a 500g pack, uses the latest generation of water dispersible granules, the product quickly dissolves in water and remains in solution in the spray tank for a minimum of 24 hours.

Compared to conventional weed management programmes, LockStar keeps surfaces clean and weed-free for longer, as well as reducing the number of applications and amounts of herbicide required.

LockStar should be applied at a rate of 500g/ha.

there’s a Headland herbicide that hits the mark.

LockStar controls a broad spectrum of weeds for up to four months and allows for professional and safe weed control. The innovative formula contains diflufenican and iodosulfuron-methylsodium – which is the first new weed control active ingredient to be released in the UK for many years.

When applied pre germination LockStar creates a dual barrier on the soil surface preventing weed growth and establishment.

SALTEX to reschedule to March 2021

SALTEX in November 2020 will result in a much stronger show in Spring 2021.

“The new date will enable even more people to visit and celebrate the innovation, technology and the passion that the grounds industry represents – including excellent networking opportunities, as well as focussing on new business needs.”

The GMA believes that holding the 75th SALTEX on 3 and 4 March 2021 will help all companies get the respite required to readjust to changing professional and personal circumstances. The organisation understands the impact of Covid-19 for many businesses and individuals within the grounds management industry.

In light of continued restrictions surrounding mass gatherings, combined with the unprecedented impact on all of us from Covid19, the Grounds Management Association’s (GMA) Board of Directors has taken the unanimous decision to move SALTEX to early Spring 2021.

This outcome has been guided by discussions with key industry bodies, as well as exhibitors. Like everyone else, the GMA has continued to follow Government guidance, and the science

involved, to guide its business during this unprecedented time. Despite early optimism, a decision has been made to move the exhibition to March 2021 – taking into account the best interests of all parties involved.

By acting now, it gives the sector an opportunity to re-group and recover ahead of the next trade show. SALTEX will be now held on 3 and 4 March 2021, and the GMA is also realigning the following year so that SALTEX runs in Spring 2022.

The GMA’s decision is based on ensuring the safety of everyone connected with such an event. The association believes this is the most responsible course of action – given current circumstances.

Speaking about the announcement David Carpenter, Independent Chair of the GMA stated: “We would like to reassure our community that personal wellbeing remains our top priority. It is a case of mixed concerns at the moment, but I am hugely optimistic because I believe that the rescheduling of

Geoff Webb, CEO at the GMA said: “This has been a difficult decision to make, and I hope all our exhibitors join forces with us to mark a return to more ordinary working conditions in the not too distant future. Professional and personal lives have been placed on hold, and that in turn will have a knock-on effect. We want to help ease that load at the moment.

“We’ve seen the grounds community come together and adapt during this challenging period, and we hope that exhibitors help us host something beyond a trade show - a celebration of what our industry can overcome when working together.”

Geoff Webb continues: “Next year, the event will provide a huge opportunity for our sector to regroup, reunite and celebrate. After this difficult period, the show will help to rekindle the economic activity of the industry. Until then, all our thoughts and support are with those facing the challenges posed by the spread of Coronavirus.”

GMA is pleased to be able to honour all existing bookings and has also secured the same halls at the NEC to minimise disruption for exhibitors. It is also in the process of contacting exhibitors with new payment terms, with later dates, and it is also working with companies that may require further assistance during this challenging period.

The GMA and its SALTEX partners are working closely together to assist businesses with the transition.

Following its launch, the Amenity Standard is receiving widespread and enthusiastic support from all sides of the amenity sector and is already being incorporated into tender documents and specifications going forward.

The Amenity Standard, when held and displayed, demonstrates that all operational activities undertaken are at the highest professional standards and fully comply with all regulations, code of practice and good practice guidance.

The key reason for introducing this UK wide standard is to

provide assurance to the public and all users of an amenity space. Displaying and holding the Standard means that the organisation and individuals undertaking the operations are members of an approved assurance scheme. The assurance scheme is audited fully before being recognised by the Amenity Standard.

Holding the Standard demonstrates that all the work undertaken is of the highest professional level and meets all legislative requirements and fully follows the code of practice and good practice guidance.

The big three questions

Mark Harrod has identified the three main questions for when you are sourcing football equipment. Firstly, is your equipment Made in Britain? In order to ensure you receive high quality, safe equipment that will last for years and you are able to gain easy access to after sales service and spares, equipment manufactured in Britain is a great place to start.

Secondly, is your supplier a member of SAPCA (the trade body that ensure specialist companies deliver consistent quality and service to the sports construction sector). Always check your supplier is a SAPCA member.

Thirdly, is the equipment Football Foundation approved? The Football Foundation only approves suppliers that show the highest regard for safety, quality and value.

Reesink still delivering customers what they need

The UK is entering its third month of lockdown and throughout Reesink UK has been focussed on delivering the best possible service to its customers in these unprecedented times.

Here we talk to Michael Hampton, Reesink’s parts manager about delivering its UK customers what they need when they need it: “Of course the situation is far from normal, but what we have here at Reesink is a new normal. One which we’re delighted to say is working.

“Customers should not have noticed any difference with regards to parts ordering and support. We have a complete range of all items in stock and we’re still able to have orders ready for dispatch in ample time for delivery within 24 hours to our customers.

“We have experienced some issues with our carriers, but those problems were expected, we had a contingency and they didn’t last long. So far we have been able to deliver our customers’ requirements whether that’s delivering to their location or via non-contact collection.”

Michael says most orders pertain to maintenance and repair work: “The majority of our orders are

for repair work to keep essential equipment operational and working safely. Contacting us for genuine spare parts is the same as it always was for customers. Emails, phone and internet are all running as usual and there have been no delays to responding to our customers’ enquiries.”

Reesink, who is the UK distributor for Toro golf and sports fields equipment, grounds machinery, irrigation products and genuine Toro Parts, among many, has been continually impressed –and thankful – throughout these weeks of lockdown for the people working tirelessly throughout the entire supply system that has meant it’s seemingly business as usual for its customers. Michael concludes: “Maintaining business as usual in these unprecedented times takes a village and everyone has stepped up to continue delivering the kind of reassurance the company strives to give customers lockdown or not and that’s minimum downtime, maximum productivity and more customer service.”

Reesink is open for business and teams in the service centres, warehouses and across the supply chain are working tirelessly to deliver parts for customers.

Intelligent One change name to US brand title Turf Tank

Industry leading robotic line marking company, Intelligent One, has changed their name to the US brand title, Turf Tank. Until now, the company has been operating under Intelligent Marking everywhere outside of the United States.

The decision has been made to bring the company together as one, and this merge will also see the renaming of the GPS line marker which will now be known as the Turf Tank One. This has been one of many positive developments at the Danish company along with the appointment of new CEO Olav Jørgensen and COO Morten Kaalund.

The company are also happy to announce the launch of the latest software update

that delivers much-requested features as well as improving both usability and reliability. This begins with the update process itself, which can now be done straight from the tablet.

When a newly updated tablet connects to a robot with an older software version, it will update the robot with the push a button.

Other major features of the 1.5 update include setting flags/ points right from the tip of the nozzle, being able to rotate a field around its centre or in discrete steps (1/45/90 degree increments etc.), moving the field by pushing buttons next to the edge of the field itself and a new ‘select shape’ dialogue that makes browsing through route plans more intuitive.

The current weather conditions means great stress is placed upon natural grass surfaces and the environmental landscape.

A Rain Bird irrigation system is an insurance policy to protect the investment made in a soft landscaping during periods of dry weather.

We’re not necessarily talking about 3 months with no rain; if a plant is without water for even a week it can suffer.

A good irrigation system allows plants to flourish during the summer, maximising their growth and vigour. Children can play on lawns that are soft and lush, while and garden plants grow bigger every week to fill those initial gaps.

GGM Groundscare has reported a surge in enquiries from golf clubs, together with its first fleet order since the Government’s recent announcement that clubs are able to reopen.

Since lockdown restrictions started to ease, GGM have received a number of calls from golf clubs who are keen to improve their playing surfaces for all their members, and invest in new Baroness equipment.

Baroness demonstrates Japanese excellence at its best, offering a comprehensive range of fineturf machinery solutions with exceptional cutting performance. From pedestrian greens mowers to five gang fairway mowers the extensive range has been manufactured to offer a quality finish, low cost of ownership, simplicity and ease of use.

Blundell’s School in Tiverton, Devon, has a renowned and solid reputation for educating and preparing students for their role in life.

An important part of the school curriculum revolves around sport and Blundell’s boasts some nine cricket squares, ten rugby pitches and five football fields.

Maintaining these facilities to the highest standards is Head Groundsman Graham Cox with his team of eight professional ground staff including two gardeners for the gardens and formal lawns.

Commented Graham Cox, Head Groundsman: “The school management team at Blundell’s understands and appreciates the need for investment in quality equipment to enable us to provide the very best grounds and sports facilities for our pupils.”

Blundell’s School recently took delivery of two new Iseki TG6495 50hp compact tractors and a Major 4m Swift trailed roller mower. “We chose what we consider the best for our purposes - not necessarily the cheapest, but equipment that gives greater performance and efficiencies,” explained Graham.

“We liked that the Swift came with a three-year guarantee and was gear-driven, meaning there were no belts that would need adjusting.”

The Major Swift is a 4m trailed roller mower that folds to a neat 2.4m for transport.

It is constructed using highperformance Strenx 700 MC structural steel, which is lighter but stronger than ordinary steel.

The reduced weight minimises ground compaction and fits to a wider range of compact tractors.

Rollers at the front and rear of the cutting deck means that it leaves a clear striped finish in all

conditions from its six cutting rotors and twelve cutting blades.

“This year, even with the wet conditions, we have been able to get onto the grass, six to eight weeks earlier than historically because of the Swift being lighter and trailed - so there’s another big advantage for us.

“The Swift gives us a really high quality finish, pretty much the same as you would get from a cylinder mower, but without the maintenance and high repair costs,” concluded Graham.

Sports turf and land drainage contractors, AMS Contracting, needed a secondary drainage machine that could work at 1m and 0.5 spacings and got that and more with the Koro TopDrain 1000, supplied through Campey Turf Care Systems.

Secondary drainage is a relatively quick and affordable drainage solution that can be implemented with minimal disruption to a surface. As the TopDrain creates open channels up to 260mm in

depth to the primary drainage, it can be an extremely important tool for pitches because it offers a quick response to rainfall which often reduces postponements or areas being unusable. The TopDrain provides a complete one-pass surface drainage system. It trenches, removes spoil and injects sand before re-compacting the surface in one pass. Campey

Agronomic Services appointed to distribute Ninja and Samurai tines

at any time of the year due the minimal disruption to the greens. Also, micro core tines are great to use when over seeding.

Due to the design and dimensions, Ninja and Samurai tines fit into Toro and John Deere quad blocks. The aim is to remove the top 20-50mm of organic matter/thatch.

Combining scarifying and sand-filling to help achieve perfection from tee to green

GKB Machines, the company behind sustainable, reliable and robust maintenance machinery for natural, synthetic and hybrid turf are offering the possibility to remove organic matter and sand-fill in just one simple and efficient operation, thanks to the GKB Sandfiller.

a unique paddle attachment create wind to lift the removed material off the surface. Offering different thicknesses of 2, 3 and 4mm blades depending on the amount of organic matter that is needing to be removed and sand to be injected.

Named after the Ninja as there is virtually no disturbance to play, as the core diameter of these tines is only 4mm.

Simply tine, blow, roll and play can commence, saving time and money. This is a viable alternative to aggressive coring. Machined using a single piece of finest steel which offers reliability, longevity, and strength, just like a Samurai sword.

Micro Core is important as it removes organic matter/thatch. This will allow the turf to expand, so this creates aeration into the surface, with all of the benefits of aeration. Micro Coring produces a firm putting surface and also reduces the onset of dry patch.

In addition, there is minimal disruption when using a micro core tine such a Ninja or Samurai.

Micro coring usually takes place in Spring and late summer. The specific design of Ninja and Samurai micro core tines has the advantage of immediate playability, they can be used

The process is very simple, tine, followed by blowing, mowing, rolling and the minimal disruption of the surface ensures players can immediately enjoy the golf greens. Green keeping with the stealth of a Ninja!

This is much more efficient, for manpower and due to the quality of the steel typically lasting up to two hectares it is cost effective for the Course Manager. This is a viable alternative to aggressive coring which is much more stressful to the plant and requires a significant recovery time.

Understanding the primary target and aspiration of greenkeepers is to achieve perfection from tee to green, the GKB Sandfiller helps fulfil this aspiration. Combining scarifying and sand-filling in one hassle free operation, this impressive machine takes a 6-person job and allows this working method to be executed by one person. Scarifying and sandfilling in this way means the surface always remains stable and improves the drainage system.

Dennis G860 integral for Notts County FC

Matthew Hallam, head groundsman at Notts County FC, claims that the versatile Dennis G860 cylinder mower has been a saving grace after they were unable to carry out end of season renovations.

Despite being unable to strip the top off the surface and remove vegetation, Matthew has done a remarkable job in keeping the pitch in a superb condition all season. With the odds stacked against him, regular maintenance has been key and Matthew claims that the Dennis G860 has been integral to the cause.

“With us not being able to carry out the work, the Dennis G860 has really helped us,” he says. “We have the Spring Tine Rake, the Verti-Cutter, the Brush, and the 8 Bladed Cylinder – so it is like a fourin-one maintenance machine.

“In the summer, we were verticutting as much as we could because we knew we had a thatch issue, and since then we have constantly brushed the pitch and raked the algae off the top of the surface. It has been a brilliant bit of kit for us and if we didn’t have the G860 then these problems would only have intensified.”

As Matthew says, the Dennis G860 features an interchangeable cassette system to assist with a wide range of tasks such as including scarifying, verticutting, brushing, spiking, and slitting. Lightweight at just 166kg; it is easy to manoeuvre and comfortable to operate. The handlebar console houses the controls for - throttle, parking brake, roller drive and cutting cylinder drive.

The mower also features a large diameter front roller with an adjustable scraper which has been designed for a precise height of cut control, giving an excellent finish on every occasion.

“The finish it provides is nothing short of excellent,” he continues. “With the G860 we cut to 25mm in the summer and from October time we will raise it to 26mm-27mm. When winter arrives, we will raise it to 28mm and will stay at that cutting height until Aprildepending on the weather.

“It’s very easy to use and it takes no time at all to take the cassettes in and out. We have tried other machines and we just feel that the Dennis G860 is the best on the market.”

The 1.2 metre working width of the machine allows jobs to be carried out quickly and efficiently with sand being injected every 4cms’ by the sand coulters.

The scarifying blades allow the removal of organic matter up to a depth of 4cm and the sideways-tipping hopper enables the immediate removal of the scarified material. Consequently, there’s no need to remove excess material from the surface. Once the hopper has been emptied, simply refill the separate sand hopper with drainage sand.

The 4GCS is a versatile pitch maintenance system

A single pass with SCH Supplies Ltd’s 4GCS allows up to four operations to be carried out simultaneously, including surface aeration, dethatching, brushing and rolling, which when combined together, enable groundsmen to prepare and maintain the pitch to a high standard, in very little time.

It is an ideal unit for general pitch grooming/maintenance on both sports fields and fine turf. The star shaped slitters pierce the surface, slicing roots and breaking up the soil to increase drainage and promote root growth.

he brush and rake tines tickle over the surface to remove thatch and enhance the quality and appearance of the area. The rear roller firms up the surface and gives that much sought after striping.

A weight tray is incorporated in the design which gives the option to add top weight to vary the penetration depth of the slitters.

All three tools can be adjusted by individual screw jacks for depth and pressure, and the side wheels can be lowered to easily transport the equipment when not on the pitch.

The 4GCS connects to any tractor with a 3-point-linkage, and the four attachments can be arranged in any order and can be lifted out of use when not required.

The single pass on the tractor reduces the amount of mud being churned up by the wheels. A specially shaped aerator star attachment can be fitted, which breaks up the surface to a greater extent than the slitter stars.

The deterioration of pitch quality over the rainy season forces many clubs to postpone, cancel, and reduce the number of games played. The improved drainage from the 4GCS will keep the mud at bay, and helps keep revenue coming into clubs.

Has the grass got away from you during lockdown?

Now that the lockdown measures have been eased somewhat, it’s time to get on top of the grass that may have gotten away from you since the beginning of spring.

One of the issues as a result of the pandemic is that contractors have had to restrict their grass cutting programmes. As result they are now faced with the challenge of cutting longer grass, so it’s worth looking at the Ventrac 4500 and Tough Cut deck combination.

The Tough Cut deck is frontmounted and excels when knocking down and mulching vegetation in large overgrown areas. Visibility of the deck is excellent and the manoeuvrability of the tractor unit, with its articulating and pivoting FlexFrame, allows it to work effectively on uneven ground.

Idverde has been responsible for Northampton Borough Council’s green spaces since winning the contract back in the summer of 2018.

Angus Lindsay, Group Head of Assets and Fleet says, “At the start the green spaces were a challenge. Long grass, especially in public spaces, is difficult to get back into specifi cation when neglected, but the Ventrac with its Tough Cut deck certainly helped us get on top of the job quickly.

“In my opinion, this deck is a good as a fl ail, if not better. Without a doubt it’s a very good, reliable and robust combination, which has proved ideal for this contract.”

Flail mowers could help speed groundscare’s post pandemic recovery

Post Covid-19, the focus will turn to achieving normality across the UK and local authorities and contractors will find themselves having to tackle large areas of growth that have had minimal maintenance.

Simon Richard, UK Agent for the Muthing rotary flail range, says: “I would suggest a large part of the solution is to reassess the machinery fleet in terms of value, performance and functionality.

“The general public will continue to demand a reasonable level of open space maintenance in return for their taxes and the ability of local authorities to achieve the two objectives of delivering cut quality at less frequent intervals

will be greatly increased by taking the decision to raise the number of fl ail mowers, as a percentage of their ground care machinery stock.

“Not only do rotaries and flail mowers generally cost less to purchase, but they also cost less to maintain, particularly grinding the cylinders and adjusting the bottom blade.

Added to this is the growing trend to leave the grass longer between cuts.

“The quality of cut afforded by flail mowers has increased so dramatically over the years that these machines are no longer kept purely for rough areas. Smaller, lightweight versions are also finding employment on a wide range of sports turf surfaces.”

So what are the benefits afforded by the flail mower when compared to their cylinder counterpart?

Where side debris is concerned the flail mower will not grab and throw debris to the left or right sides of the mower during cutting, making it extremely useful for cutting areas such as streets and close to buildings.

The flail mower cuts the grass in a very distinctive way and the finished appearance will usually take on a striped appearance similar to a cylinder mower.

The flail is an extremely versatile piece of equipment and has the capability to tick a number of municipal task boxes, such as offering a rough, fine or smooth

cut finish, the latter being particularly suited to golf courses or football playing surface work.

The capital cost of a ride-on with a flail is significantly lower than that of a cylinder mower and this, together with reduced maintenance costs, has a significant bearing on the annual hire costs for customers.

There has been an upsurge in interest in flail mowers as the efficient and safe solution, with regard to delivering a reduction in ‘foreign object throw’ issues.

Muthing are alone in having independent testing by TUV Nord, an accredited certification body, who confirm their products provide for the safety of both operator and other people within the operating area of the mower deck.

Muthing safety clearances are reduced to 8 metres to the front or rear of their MU-FM 140/160 flails, two metres to the side and no higher than 600cm, an industry leader by some considerable distance.

Driven by financial constraints, a reduction in frequency of cuts per year, possibly in the order of fifty per cent, will inevitably result in the need for grass to be cut when both longer and wet.

The flail is far more effective and efficient in longer wet grass conditions as the discharge area reaches the full width of the machine.

Perhaps the main claim of the flail option is the ability to deliver very acceptable surfaces in all grass conditions and at a fraction of the cost of the alternatives.

Trust Toro genuine parts when it’s time to work again

Toro parts UK distributor Reesink Turfcare has some advice for grounds teams preparing their machines for work – choose your bottom blades carefully.

Michael Hampton, parts manager at Reesink, says: “Bottom blades can be an area where buyers decide to cut corners, choosing an inferior, spurious part in order to save money, but that doesn’t make long-term sense when you have a Toro machine and short-term that could be even worse.

“You need to be sure your machine can go out there and deal with potentially months of uncut grass effectively, with ease, delivering the best possible finish when there’s lots to do and you don’t want to be relying on ‘will fit’ parts for that.”

Well-maintained bottom blades are vital in producing a quality cut and genuine Toro bottom blades are the best there are, outperforming ‘will fit’ inferior quality parts.

Research at Toro headquarters in America proves this point.

In tests focused on many physical characteristics, in particular the flatness of the blade and positioning of the chamfered mounting holes, results showed that unbranded bottom blades failed in over 50 percent of Toro’s quality specification standards.

Michael continues: “Grounds fleets will be put through their paces when the time comes to start cutting more areas, or more frequently, again. Not only will it be high season but there’s likely a lot of backlog to deal with. The last thing the team needs are delays dealing with worn, damaged or blunted bottom blades or wasted time waiting for replacement parts.”

Reesink is still open for business and teams in our service centres, warehouses and across our supply chain are working tirelessly to deliver parts for our customers.

Rising to the challenge of maintaining surfaces during unprecedented times

for industry professionals on the best ways to return to some sort of normality.

Nick Darking of Charterhouse Turf Machinery says, “While the fundamentals of turf maintenance such as mowing and aeration will have largely been able to continue for many, the restrictions around ‘essential maintenance’ will have impacted on when and how this will have been conducted. One result of the reduced levels of surface agitation could be a build-up of organic matter.

“Thorough scarification can also make the turf less susceptible to pests and, as we progress towards the wetter autumn months, improve the resilience to disease occurrence.

With time still of the essence for many, the Turf Tidy is a versatile machine that combines dethatching, flail cutting or sweeping with collection. It is designed with a fully floating head that follows the grounds’ contours ensuring clean and even pick-up of clippings, thatch and other debris.

“If thatch accumulations are present, the 80+ tungsten carbide tipped blades of the UltraGroomer will effectively remove thatch and lateral growth to keep the sward open. The UltraGroomer can also help to reduce the ingress of Poa annua by removing seed heads and individual plants before they get a chance to take hold.”

Restrictions on mowing frequency have seen many Turf Managers turn to chemical methods of regulating growth, points out Andy Russell of Headland Amenity.

There is nothing in the various manuals, guidebooks, advice leaflets and in the pearls of wisdom handed down over the years that would help the industry prepare for and react to a global pandemic.

After the events of 2020 there is probably plenty of new guides and updated advice being prepared even as you read this.

The industry as a whole has responded in typically

professional fashion to the Covid19 crisis and has reacted the best it could to the initial lockdown and subsequent easing of restrictions.

We asked a few key manufacturers for their top tips

“Coming out of a more dormant period we would look to encourage scarification and verti-cutting to remove any dead or decaying matter, as well as rid the surface of any debris. ‘Cleaning’ the turf can encourage stronger, healthier growth and make the results of any overseeding or chemical applications more effective.

“For quick and easy scarification, the Verti-Cut 1300 is available in trailed format - fitted with 2mm carbide tipped knives for a clean cut down to depths of 25mm when conditions allow. For larger areas, the Verti-Rake decompacts the surface using thin spring-loaded, flexible tines to ‘scratch’ between the turf blades and loosen any thatch. As well as improving the health of a playing surface, the Verti-Rake can also be used to create an ideal seed bed before overseeding.”

Vinny Tarbox of MTD Specialty Turf Products said it is important to ensure that any mechanical practices carried out keeps plant stress to a minimum.

“This will put Turf Managers in the best position to avoid damaging and costly disease outbreaks further down the line,” he added.

“Plant Growth Regulators (PGR’s) such as Clipless NT, effectively limit the production of gibberellic acid – the plant hormone responsible for cell elongation. By lowering levels of the hormone within the plant leaf, Clipless NT helps reduce cell elongation and vertical growth and, instead, redirects the energy within the

“Mowing has been - and will continue to be – one of the most frequently employed tasks over this period and so, making small changes to your mowing programme can have a big impact on plant health. As we begin to experience the hotter, drier days, one should consider raising heights of cut and/or incorporating alternatives to mowing – such as brushing – into the programme, to reduce stress.

“We have seen this a lot over the last few weeks, particularly in Football, with tools such as the PowerBrush or TurfClean being used to maintain appearance while mowing is not essential. When you are mowing, it is good practice to keep your machine well maintained and ensure blades are sharp to cut plants cleanly, and not tear or shred them, increasingly vulnerability to disease.

“Alongside mowing, Turf Managers will also be wanting to open surfaces up to maximise the benefits of any rainfall or treatment applications. The SarelRoller from our TMSystem cassette range helps to improve filtration rates and gaseous exchange into the upper rootzone by preventing surface sealing.

plant to generate enhanced root development and lateral growth.

“In its simplest capacity, it can contribute towards a stronger, healthier sward that requires less frequent mowing and one that is more able to withstand various types of turf stress. As these restrictions begin to ease, we should not look to increase stress on the grass plant, by unnecessarily rushing to apply too many different treatments. As time goes on however, turf managers can look to maximise the efficiency of spray applications of a PGR by safely introducing fertilisers and/or iron liquids into the tank mix.

“A cost-effective spring/summer feed without excessive clippings generation would combine Clipless NT with XTEND® 460-0, providing around 5-10kg N/ Ha, alongside Elevate Fe liquid iron formulation to boost colour. With the drier months ahead of us, TriCure AD can also be combined with the XTEND/Elevate mix, helping to prevent hydrophobic conditions by retaining available moisture in the soil profile.

“Maximising the benefits for plant health and playability with a single tank-mix application can save both time and money.”

Top of the line service from Turfix

Fleet’s rainbow adds colour to Worcestershire communities

As well as being 100 metres from one end to the other, below the net arc of the rainbow, Fleet painted the VE Day logo set on top of a Union Jack flag.

Turfix Services - part of The Pitchmark Group and sister company of Turfix - is offering a nationwide line marking service.

Able to come to site and safely work alone using a state-of-theart GPS system, our operators are able to mark anything from running tracks, social-distance areas or custom shapes – ideal for schools or other areas where

many grounds teams are currently short-staffed. Turfix Services can apply markings to grass, hard surfaces like playgrounds, or artificial 3G/4G pitches.

Android-based Supaturf SWOZI raises the bar

GPS-guided linemarking has further advanced with the Generation 3 SWOZI from Vitax Supaturf.

The Supaturf SWOZI marked a quantum leap in the speed and efficiency of linemarking, with turfcare professionals able to mark out a football pitch in an average time of just 30 minutes.

The technology already allows sports contractors and site-based grounds professionals to mark out far more pitches in a day than when using traditional machines.

Generation 3 SWOZI features upgraded control system, electronics and communications, using a Windows-based app now ported to Android, introducing variable or constant rate paint outflow to give users more flexible work patterns.

Fleet Line Markers have been working with communities around their Worcestershire base to bring some much-needed colour to the lives of local people.

The line marking specialists, based in Malvern, have been in demand to create tributes to both NHS key workers and to mark the VE Day celebrations.

The first project came via Julie Wills, the Head Teacher of Upton Upon Severn Primary School, who requested a large rainbow on their playing field in support of all the key workers.

Having completed the project, which was widely reported in local media, Malvern Community Hospital asked if Fleet could paint another rainbow outside its reception.

After filming the Fleet artwork, Justyn Surrall of BBC Hereford & Worcester joked about a competition to create the largest rainbow.

Fleet rose to the challenge and contacted Malvern Rugby Club to check if it would allow its 1st XV pitch to be used for a larger tribute. The area is 100 metres in length and it was decided to combine the rainbow tribute with a commemoration of VE Day on May 8.

The end result was this massive artwork, which not only made national news but has also been reported by news channels as far afield as New Zealand.

Fleet’s team used the MAQA GNSS system to plot the flag, the BeamRider Laser System was used for the VE Day logo and it was back to basics using a tape measure and straight edges to do the lettering.

The 75 on the VE Day logo is six metres in height, while the VE Day letters themselves were four metres tall. The rest of the text is about 1.3 metres.

Each colour of the rainbow was 2.5 metres in width – the distance around the red arc of the rainbow is around 157 metres.

It took the Fleet team almost three days to complete the rugby club project but it certainly made a huge impression on a lot of people far and wide.

The company would like to thank everyone who has been involved in all the painted tributes it has done so far.

John O’Conner makes wise investment with TinyLineMarker

The investment in Rigby Taylor’s TinyLineMarker (TLM) robotic line marking machine by John O’Conner (Grounds Maintenance) will not only enable the company to further improve the effectiveness of its already high levels of customer service but this new, technological approach to sports field marking will also enable the firm to reduce the human resource, time, water usage and carbon footprint of its traditional line marking operations.

According to managing director Matt O’Conner: “Delivery of service is crucial to the ongoing success of our business, which is always looking to take things forward to the benefit of customers.”

TLM, he says, will generate rewards in every aspect of line marking by enabling the company to:

• Save time on the initial marking of pitches and athletic sports’ lines –for example, taking just 30 minutes instead of 90 minutes to initial mark a full-size football pitch, and 1.5 hours instead of up to three-quarters of a day for an athletics track;

• Save on paint costs since TLM, which uses 10-litre drums of Rigby Taylor’s award-winning Impact paint, will line mark a standard-size football pitch with just 1.1 litres of Impact;

• Use a lot less water – the ready-mixed Impact paint means there’s no mixing and no potential water loss; and

• Deliver the service with just one operative and a small van – compared to two operatives (with

all the associated tools) and a larger (3.5 tonne) vehicle, so the savings in human resources will be complemented by a smaller carbon footprint for the service in terms of transport/fuel requirements.

“In addition, because everything with TLM is ‘computerised’ with the operator ‘programming’ TLM via a user-friendly tablet to produce precisely-positioned lines, the software also allows for clients to make subtle but sometimes important changes to the positioning of certain lines – for instance, ‘inserting’ training grids alongside running tracks.

“This means we can ‘tweak’ the line marking to satisfy our clients’ every need in terms of additional line marking, and that can only further improve customer satisfaction levels.”

Initially aimed at football pitches (any length/width), and rugby union and league pitches as well as multi-lane athletic tracks, tennis, lacrosse and American football pitches, TLM can also mark bespoke shapes which are often required for some smaller locations and events such as school sports days.

Indeed, John O’Conner’s contracts for line marking rugby and football pitches are complemented by applications

TLM utilises the latest GPS technology with RTK receiver and antenna that connects with global satellites and mobile network connections.

It takes the input of pitch line dimensions and multiple pitches via an App and repositions them to best fit the site using Google Maps. Once stored, the lines are never lost, even if they disappear if a pitch is not used for any length of time.

Turf Tank keeps athletes on track

Recently, the Turf Tank One was used by ProSportUK Ltd to mark a 400m track incorporating a 100m track and two rounders pitches. From start to finish, the process took no more than four hours.

Typically, marking out a 400m running track from scratch takes days’ worth of labour. Plotting the lanes, curves, and full distance of the track accounts for most of this time whereas using the Turf Tank One means the task could be completed in three hours.

After arriving on site, a quick decision is made about where the track should go, and the location is plotted on the tablet. Once the base station is set, the robot can be operated without cellular or real-time kinematic (RTK) connectivity and coverage.

Using the closed system means the marker can be used anywhere with unprecedented reliability.

Once the Turf Tank One begins, it only needs to stop for the paint to be refilled - otherwise, it will mark continuously until the job is complete.

While it is marking the operator is free to complete other tasks with any alerts showing on the tablet if the robot does need assistance.

With the running tracks completed the position of the rounders pitches were plotted and marking quickly started, with each pitch taking less than ten minutes to complete. Despite the location of one of the pitches being under trees, the base station ensured that the signal did not drop out at any point.

Compacts clean up

The latest round of engine emission legislation moving down the power bracket and demand for technology which makes operating a tractor easier and more efficient in the groundcare role has driven number of developments. Jane Carley reports.

John Deere has announced a number of updates to its compact tractor range for 2020, which includes 13 models from 25 to 66hp.

The main change is prompted by the latest Stage V emissions regulations in Europe, which are designed to limit ultrafine particulate emissions in all engines above 25hp.

John Deere’s compact tractors of 25hp and below – the 1026R and 2026R, which remain unchanged, and the new 3025E – already meet the necessary standards. Other 2R and 3R Series models above 25hp get a new Yanmar 1.6-litre, threecylinder TNV Series diesel engine that features a high torque reserve, providing plenty of power under heavy loads.

This uses the latest engine technologies to improve fuel economy, control and accuracy, while also reducing environmental impact as well as operating costs.

The engine’s new after-treatment system consists of a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), similar to that used successfully on John Deere’s larger agricultural tractors. This operates automatically to produce lower levels of exhaust emissions and reduced noise levels, and meets all current requirements for Stage V emission standards.

At the top of the John Deere compact tractor range, the new 4052M and 4052R receive a larger 2.1-litre, four-cylinder engine with DPF. This is the same as the existing engine on the biggest 4066M and 4066R models, which remain unchanged, while several of the smaller 2R and 3R Series tractors are also given new model numbers.

In addition to the new engine, the 3R and 4R Series compact tractors will be equipped with a new eThrottle function, designed make the tractor quieter and more comfortable to use, as well as more fuel efficient.

With the simple push of a button, engine speed is linked to the foot pedal position so that engine rpm and tractor speed can both be increased as the pedal is depressed.

The latest 4R Series models can also now be equipped with a StarFire satellite receiver and AutoTrac Universal automatic steering system. This is designed to help operators achieve higher levels of accuracy and input cost savings when working with implements such as amenity turf sprayers, seeders and spreaders.

Cabbed versions of John Deere’s new range of compact tractors for 2020 can be ordered now from UK & Ireland dealers, while open platform models will be available from October. The majority of tractors sold to football and sports clubs by Kioti UK are still in the 28-40hp range, explains General Manager Patrick Desmond.

“This is largely due to the need to match existing implements and to budget limitations. Considerations towards storage will also be an influence. Shipping containers are still a favoured choice with smaller clubs.”

“However, we are also seeing a growing demand for larger tractors, for example our 73hp RX7330PC model. Wider, higher capacity and more time-efficient implements can be utilised which allows golf courses and contractors to maintain or increase work rates and efficiency with smaller teams.”

The restriction to using larger tractors - and last winter was a perfect example of this, Patrick concedes - is when the weather turns wet and ground conditions become saturated, and there is a risk of compaction and damage.

“ Kioti recognises this by offering a wide range of tyres, but particularly useful in these situations is the POLS special wheel. The wide radial tyres, using as little as 0.6 bar pressure with a special tread pattern, allow the RX7330PC tractor to float across the surface reducing damage.”

The RX7330PC has a lift capacity of 3075kg and weighs just 2.8 tonnes, he points out.

Technology is also a priority for Kioti , says Patrick. “We certainly know the advantages of guidance systems, and we are looking to work with a partner to be able to offer a box kit option. Kioti Tractors above 60hp, i.e. the DK6010 and RX models are already using stage V engines and only software changes were required to meet the emissions standard because we have been using common rail engines with DPF since 2012.”

From July the Kioti Factory production will change to producing Stage V-compliant models for all small to medium tractors above 25hp.

“The most welcome introduction to the Kioti ranges will be the launch of DK4520 and DK5020 HST models available either with ROPS or the spacious and well laidout Kioti factory-fit cabin. These two models fill the gap between the existing CK4010 hydrostatic model and the 60hp DK6010,” he adds.

Head of Kubota UK’s groundcare division Tim Yates agrees that compact tractor still rules: “Amongst contractors and local authorities, we’ve seen very little change in terms of demand when it comes to the actual physical size of tractors for groundcare applications.

“On the other hand, we have seen an increase in horsepower on recent compact tractor models. This has added increased flexibility for customers who are looking for more power without the physical bulk of a bigger machine,” he explains.

Technology however, is important, suggests Tim. “There has been a growing demand for higher specification tractors as customers constantly look to improve their results, whilst increasing efficiency and ease of use. The Kubota ‘bi speed turn’ system – which significantly reduces turf damage - is a good example.

“It’s also worth noting that some of our hydrostatic transmission tractors have a range of up to six speeds, along with a ‘stall guard’ feature which enables the tractor to be used to its full capacity with greater ease, as it removes the need for sensitive pedal operation to prevent engine stall.

He adds: “While these features bring benefits, the demand for simpler machines in the standard or utility specification has remained strong and to this end, we have developed our B1 and L1 series.”

The main change that is affecting compact tractors this year is the implementation of the Stage V engine legislation which is having the effect of removing the 25-35hp power bracket, suggests Richard Tyrrell, Iseki UK marketing manager.

“With transition-engined models selling out, customers are now having to choose between either a lower (no additional emission controls) or a higher horsepower model, which is Stage V legislation-compliant.”

Compact tractors still have a role to play due to their size and weight advantages, he says. “Many sites have access issues and in general there is a desire for low weight machines on maintained surfaces.

“We are expecting the first Iseki TH5420 tractors that were launched at LAMMA to arrive soon. This is a compact, highly manoeuvrable tractor, complete with a 40hp Stage V-compliant engine, a workhorse that is ideal for access into tight spaces.”

Capable of lifting 1,200kg, the three-range hydrostatic transmission with auto-cruise gives ease of control whilst powering implements.

The two-speed rear PTO, dual mode engagement and auto-stop function, plus a mid PTO, allows for a wide range of implements to be utilised. It also features a factory fitted cab with air conditioning as standard and a noise rating of only 77db.

Another popular choice with golf courses and contractors is the 46hp TG6495 IQ, Richard comments: “A compact but powerful compact tractor, the IQ dual clutch gearbox offers fingertip control, ideal for aeration and other speedcritical work. It also has a very good lift capabilities at 1580kg plus electronic headland management controls.”

Fendt’s 200 series has been designed to include many of the features from the brand’s larger machines, wrapped up in a compact package.

“The 200 is light and manoeuvrable for a tractor that can be specified with more than 100 horsepower. It also benefits from the Vario transmission that is common throughout the full Fendt range,” explains Product Specialist Peter Henson.

The Vario transmission offers the operator control at all speeds from 0.02kph to 40kph. Coupled with the option of superimposed steering, which enables fewer turns from lock to lock, this makes the Fendt easy to control and manoeuvre in even the tightest of spaces.

Powerful hydraulics (104 l/ min) provide the operator with ample capacity for a variety of hydraulically driven implements and are easily adjusted from within the cab.

“There are separate oil supplies for the transmission and hydraulic services which improves servicing intervals and crucially reduces the risk of contaminating the transmission,” explains Peter.

The Fendt range includes cruise control, engine rpm pre-sets and the ability to automatically engage and disengage the PTO. “For the operator this makes day to day tasks that bit easier, reducing the need to make manual adjustments and allowing them to concentrate on the task at hand.”

Further options include front suspension to improve comfort when travelling to jobs and a floor heater which can be added to the flat floor design.

Optional autosteer makes operating in tight spaces more accurate and has the benefit of reducing overlaps.

Local authorities are moving more towards its 120hp-plus T5 electro command tractors with cab suspension, especially for road use suggests New Holland . Demand for cab and front axle suspension options is being driven by health and safety vibration legislation.

The compact tractor is now being used more by the owner-operator or the smaller scale operator, having the advantage of being easily loaded and moved around to jobs on a trailer.

The company has also noted interest in GPS technology, especially where driven by legislation is such as for spraying.

When using 6-7m working width mowers, GPS saves overlap, increasing productivity while saving time and fuel.

New Holland has also pioneered engine technology with alternative fuel sources on its T6 Methane powered tractor, while an upgraded transmission such as the new T5 Dynamic Command (DCT) semi powershift offers increased versatility.

Rotavators into an implement combining the advantages of a power harrow and a rotavator.

The roller attachment is fitted to the hood of an existing tiller, and can precisely adjust the rotavator’s digging depth from 12mm to 175mm, at the same time gently firming the

soil surface to leave a readyto-plant seedbed.

Shallow rotavating can be undertaken without bringing deep dormant weeds to the surface. If deeper rotavating is required then the roller can simply be raised to the maximum height so the tines can dig deeper.

Two finance deals on TYM tractors

Reesink Turfcare, UK distributor of TYM tractors, appreciates finances are likely tighter than expected in these difficult times and is supporting customers in getting the tractor they need by launching two finance deals –customers can choose interest-free or a low rate five year finance deal.

Having reliable and economic tractors in the shed is vital, now more than ever, considering the unprecedented circumstances the turfcare community finds itself in.

Reesink tractor sales manager Steven Haynes says: “We understand that for most this year’s forecasts, plans and budgets have been hugely affected by the effect of Coronavirus and it’s vital that as a distributor we support our customers in delivering against their objectives without significant initial cash outlay.”

That’s why Reesink Turfcare has been working with its longterm finance partner Hitachi Capital Business Finance to create two interest rate fi nance deals for its entire range of popular TYM tractors.

Plus, there’s three years ‘Bumper2Bumper’ warranty across the entire range for complete peace of mind.

One deal offers zero percent interest for two years. With a payment break until September 2020, then 24 monthly repayments thereafter. The scheme is based on financing up to 50 percent of the tractor’s retail price.

The second option is a longerterm finance package with a low interest rate of 1.5 percent over 60 months. Based on a 1+59 payment profile and again, financing up to 50 percent of the tractor’s RRP price.

Steven says: “These finance options are designed to help customers buy the tractors they need without compromising cash flow, allowing them to replenish or add to their fleet in a way that suits their financial situation.”

Both deals are available from now until 31 August 2020. Finance is subject to acceptance and business users and only available in the UK.

“We

a range of tasks from seeding, rotavating and stone burying to spraying, and Peter recently purchased a Spearhead reach arm flail for vegetation control work.

“We do a lot of paddock spraying, from 0.5-40 acres and the tractors are

ideal for that – easy to operate with the hydrostatic transmission, and very comfortable with the heated and air conditioned cab and air seat.”

Fitted with oversized turf tyres, the MF1747 treads lightly but is also capable of handling larger implements with a 1.5 tonne linkage lift capacity.

“We can run them separately, but the two working together on a task like seeding are very productive and can tackle a good-sized job,” he says.

Both tractors are road legal and have a 30kph top speed, but are also compact enough to move between jobs on Ifor Williams trailers, he adds.

Perfect balance for greater comfort and productivity

The rewarding result of Pellenc’s innovation and experience in multifunctional, long-life batteries, the remarkably lightweight and perfectly balanced Airion hand-held blower offers ergonomic benefits which are essential to user comfort.

Whereas traditional blowers tend to swing downward towards the nozzle, the Airion 3 has an angled air intake, which offsets the swing effect from the air blast.

This keeps the tool correctly balanced at any speed setting without putting strain on the wrist.

This design also significantly reduces the blower’s noise disturbance for people in the surrounding environment, with the added benefit that the user no longer needs to wear ear defenders.

The Airion 3 is the ideal tool for cleaning jobs in urban areas, parks or gardens. Its speed controller and boost feature make it possible to manage the blowing power based on the surface to be cleared. Even leaves that are soft, wet or stuck to the ground are no match for the Airion.

Protected against dust and moisture, the blower is also designed to withstand the test of time.

Bad news for debris

As a professional landscaper you need your equipment to be able to perform the toughest of jobs and to stand up to your needs, season, after season.

The Pro Vac SI Debris Vacuum from Little Wonder delivers the suction power to help you clear litter and debris faster from hedges and verges.

The serrated steel impeller blade technology with up to a 5:1 reduction ratio delivers superior suction and shredding capabilities.

To let you continue your pace of work the height adjustment of the nozzle is controlled from the operator’s position, allowing for non-stop pavement to turf clean up.

Working in tight areas, the optimal sized hose with

adjustable handle will pick up all the debris into the 150 litre bag, designed with a ‘no kick’ plastic bottom to prevent wear and tear.

The optional hose kit sits securely in a specially contoured pocket that blocks air flow when not in use.

The throated nozzle design has been engineered to increase the airspeed for superior suction power. Lightweight at 146lbs the Pro Vac SI Debris Vacuum is easy to manoeuvre onto the back of a trailer or van.

Since 1922 professionals have relied on the performance and long-lasting durability of Little Wonder landscaping and debris management equipment.

Its motor is housed in a magnesium alloy body that guarantees both proper temperature dissipation and total sealing (IP54).

The Airion 3 benefits from several improvements over its predecessor: new materials for the air intake elbow and the outlet nozzle, as well as a new cable with high fatigue resistance, which considerably increases the tool’s service life.

The tool’s battery level display, available with the 1200 and 1500 batteries, makes it possible to manage battery life perfectly.

In addition, the Airion 3 is the first tool in the Pellenc range to profit from the Fast Connector system for rapid tool connection/ disconnection. This feature allows you to quickly remove the tool while working if there is a risky situation or to use both hands freely without having to remove the back battery.

All Pellenc batteries come with an industry leading four year warranty and tools come with a three-year commercial warranty. Pellenc is distributed in the UK and Ireland exclusively by Etesia UK.

Honda sales soar under lockdown

Honda UK Lawn & Garden has declared the UK a nation of green gardeners as planting season leapt into full swing.

Gardeners made the most of lockdown, social distancing and the glorious sunshine by cultivating their way to a greener, more selfsufficient lifestyle as Honda tiller sales soared and the Lawn and Garden division achieved 110% of targeted sales in April.

An appetite to garden, and more specifically plant, swept the nation. Honda’s tiller sales outstripped target by 327%, signalling sowing season is well underway and the grow your own movement is taking hold in flower beds across the country.

Lawns were not to be ignored though as keen gardeners flocked to buy izy lawnmowers, which accounted for 42% of Honda Lawn & Garden’s April sales, with the powerful, robust and

lightweight HRG 416 PKEH model topping the charts.

Fully-charged with technology and left to its own devices, Small Miimo lavished greens with TLC leaving owners to enjoy, tan and play in their gardens without lifting a finger. Having just joined the Lawn & Garden range, it’s little surprise the smart and feature-packed model made up 78% of Honda UK’s robotic lawnmower sales in the month.

Steve Morris, Head of Power Products at Honda (UK) comments: “It’s great that we have managed to overachieve this month despite the circumstances.

I’m delighted to see the public making the most of the brilliant weather and lockdown conditions, too, tending to their gardens to make them summerready with a Honda power tool.”

Honda

Honda brushcutters, walkbehind mowers and lawn tractors, and a new range of cordless electric hand tools have been added to the extensive range of products available to landscape and groundcare professionals from Spaldings, the direct sales specialist.

The new equipment results from Honda’s appointment of Spaldings as a national dealer covering the UK and Ireland, and as a local dealership in the Lincoln area for selected products.

Steve Constable, Spaldings managing director, said: “As an approved Honda service agent we are able to offer genuine Honda Lawn & Garden products to our customers giving them greater choice in their decision making.

“The expertise gained from over a decade of being a main servicing dealer for other well-known brands ensures that Spaldings can offer full service and warranty back-up as standard, maintaining our reputation for first class service, quality and value built up over the past 65 years.”

In addition to 25cc and 35cc four-stroke petrol brushcutters and the multi-function Honda Versatool – a push-and-click powerhead available with several different attachments –the Honda products now stocked by Spaldings include newlyintroduced battery-powered hand tools and walk-behind mowers.

The professional grade cordless hand tools include the Honda HHT 36 AXB brushcutter supplied with a three-tooth blade and nylon strimming line, ‘handlebar’ grips and a double shoulder harness.

It weighs just 6.5kg before fitting the 36 volt, 6.0Ah lithium-ion universal battery that is also used for Honda’s new 60cm hedge trimmer.

When powering the HHB 36 AXB leaf blower, the battery pack is worn on the user’s belt to minimise the weight of the blower, which comes with two interchangeable nozzles and variable fan speed to deliver the best airflow to shift dry, wet and heavy debris.

With the cordless rotary mowers, buyers get proven features from Honda’s petrolfuelled izy machines, including a pressed steel deck, but with a new-design quiet and efficient brushless electric motor powered by a 4Ah, 6Ah or 9Ah lithium-ion battery.

STIHL announces new bar and chain upgrades

STIHL continues to offer professional forestry and agriculture chainsaw users enhanced performance with the introduction of a newly designed guide bar and saw chains for 20% faster cutting performance, with lighter weight.

Standard fitment on the MS 261 C-M forestry and MS 271 agriculture chainsaws, the Light 04 chainsaw bar features a new innovative slim contour design that means it weighs up to 200g less than the previous Rollomatic E bar, ensuring forestry and agriculture workers can benefit from easier manoeuvrability, improved balance, and less fatigue when cutting.

The new guide bars weigh 10% (40cm bars) to 20% (50cm bars) less than previous versions, while the slimmer profile and bar tip allows for faster plunge cutting.

As part of the new chainsaw upgrades, the MS 261 C-M will

now come fitted with .325” RS PRO and the MS 271 with the RM3 PRO saw chain as standard.

The 1.3mm gauge chain, which matches the 1.3mm bar groove, offers up to 20% greater cutting performance when compared to .325 RS saw chains, which are 1.6mm thickness. The faster cutting comes from the thickness

of the cutter tooth that is reduced from 7.7mm to 6.8mm, meaning less wood is removed from the cut for more efficiency.

The MS 261 C-M and MS 271 are available from May 2020 with the new Light 04 and new RS saw chains.
