History made by all-female grounds team at North London derby
An all-female grounds team prepared the pitch at Emirates Stadium for Arsenal vs Tottenham in the Women’s Super League on Sunday 3 March 2024.
In the months leading up to the match, the Women’s Super League and Women in Football, both sponsored by Barclays, have collaborated with the Grounds Management Association, the leading membership organisation representing grounds personnel in the UK, and Arsenal Football Club to help 13 female grounds professionals make history as the first all-female grounds team to prepare a Women’s Super League match.
The team includes:
• Alexia Doughty (Apprentice Groundsperson at Stratford Sports Club)
• Beth Gibbs (Groundsperson at Wellington School and GMA Young Board member)
The trailblazing group of women prepared the Emirates Stadium pitch ahead of the North London derby with the aim of encouraging young girls and boys to consider a career in grounds management, an industry in need of young talented recruits who are passionate about sport.
Despite an uplift of women playing sport across all levels, however, only 2% of the grounds management sector, which is responsible for maintaining the nation’s pitches, is female.
CEO of the leading membership organisation representing grounds personnel in the UK, the Grounds Management Association, Geoff Webb says:
• Bobbie Murphy (Apprentice Groundsperson at Arsenal Football Club)
• Carlie Lambert (Apprentice Groundsperson for Worcestershire County Cricket Club)
• Emily Geach (Volunteer
“Grounds staff are essential in making sport possible, and, without them, we simply wouldn’t have the pitches we need for our nation’s enjoyment of sport.
“Research shows that women make up a small percentage of the number of grounds staff we have working in the sector and so, if we want to provide more pitches to keep up with the increased demand for grass playing surfaces, we need more to enter the sector.
“We’re delighted to see some exceptional examples of women working in the sector celebrated at a such an important fixture

New research reveals challenges of delivering BNG
A study from national green space management charity, the Land Trust, in partnership with the Land, Planning and Development Federation (LPDF) and the Home Builders Federation (HBF) has found that despite the challenges it presents, 95% of respondents support the launch of BNG regulations, with only 5% in opposition.
However, just 7% of land promoters and developers believe the
fulfilment of mandatory biodiversity net gain (BNG) requirements are “comfortably achievable”. Close to half (45%) felt the principles are “somewhat achievable”, and 43% said fulfilment would be “very challenging”.
Of the 42 land promoters and developers surveyed, for the second year running, the availability of land onsite to deliver BNG was the most popular response with 88% of respondents
calling out the concern. The second most common concern was the impact BNG would have on the overall viability of a site (69%), followed by the provision of “appropriate administration resource and skillset within the Local Planning Authority” (62%).
Alan Carter, Chief Executive at the Land Trust said: “As the wider industry gets to grips with the practicalities of the regulations and begins to understand their
in the Barclays Women’s Super League calendar and we hope their example encourages more people to consider careers in grounds management.”
The 13 women involved come from different venues across a variety of sporting and educational facilities and will be led by Tara Sandford, Groundsperson at Arsenal Football Club, who when reflecting on the initiative, said: “The consistent level of support

The respondents are keen to work with trusted partners like the Land Trust which will assist them in delivering high quality and sustainable stewardship solutions
for their BNG requirements. “We are very much open for business and have a number of differing products which provide a secure and tailored delivery model for your BNG needs, whilst also delivering longer term social value for the communities who live and work around our sites.”

Welcome...
The political picture is never easy to define and there are plenty of times when what happens at Westminster proves to be very difficult viewing.
A hat tip, therefore, to all those industry and trade bodies who are proactive when it comes to public affairs and are constantly battling to give the wider industry a chance in the political spotlight.
As we are in a General Election year, their work will be ramping up as they court political support and attempt to get the various parties to include the industry in their thinking and promote manifesto promises that will have a positive impact for us all.
It is a crowded field and there are many who will argue that our industry will be low in the pecking order. But that fails to acknowledge the significant economic benefits our industry provides for the UK and its standing internationally. It also ignores the massive health and well-being benefits our work has for communities throughout the country.
We can only hope that politicians listen. But as the saying goes, every little bit helps so if you get a chance to bend the ear of a local politician about the industry (in a polite and friendly way, obviously), then don’t hesitate to highlight its world class qualities.
This month we have our regular Professional Groundscare supplement with a look at everything from Grass Seeds & Wildflowers to Ride-on Mowers.
There are also the usual mix of product launches, case study and latest news from across the industry.
We have plenty to be positive about in the industry and plenty to shout about too. So don’t be shy about telling your local MP.

HTA celebrates 125 years of supporting environmental horticulture
The Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) began its celebration on 20 February 2024, marking 125 years of dedicated support for UK Environmental Horticulture.
Fran Barnes, the Chief Executive of the HTA, addressed attendees at the Garden Press Event, highlighting the association’s pivotal role in advocating for industry interests, fostering growth, and stressing the significant economic contribution of the sector.
Reflecting on the HTA’s evolution, Fran Barnes remarked:
“The HTA has evolved alongside profound social and industry transformations. Initially established during an era when rail transport spurred concerns of plant damage and import challenges, we continue to address analogous issues in the post-Brexit landscape, from border controls to import regulations. Our legacy of resilience was evident during World War I when our lobbying efforts secured essential status for horticultural workers. More recently, our successful campaign to reopen garden centres amid the COVID-19 pandemic underscores the enduring efficacy of our advocacy.
“However, much has changed since our inception, from advancements in communication technology to the adoption of robotics in cultivation, our commitment to environmental stewardship remains unwavering. As we marvel at the innovations showcased at the Garden Press Event, I am reminded of our founders’ enduring legacy, which has nurtured a thriving industry dedicated to enhancing Britain’s green landscape.
“Environmental horticulture encompasses economic vitality, environmental sustainability, and public health and wellbeing. The sector’s substantial contributions speak volumes, with £28 billion added to the British economy, supporting 674 thousand jobs and generating £6 billion in tax revenues. Looking ahead, with adequate support, our industry’s GDP footprint could exceed £41 billion by 2030. There are very few – if any sectors –which can match the economic numbers with the environmental benefits and the social value of environmental horticulture.”
“We have a great story to tell. But we also have challenges – and we need to be clear to everyone - public and politicians alike - that gardens, and the plants and trees around us, don’t

options, offering versatility in day-to-day maintenance tasks such as cutting, scarifying, brushing, and verticutting.
James offers further insight into his use of cassettes: “We’ve got the 8 bladed cutting cassette, three verticutting cassettes which we use quite a lot, and we also have brushes and sorrel rollers. Being able to increase the cassette speed when using the brush is a big plus, they work a lot better and throw the debris into the box a bit more. The verticutter is a really useful tool for us, and with the electric power behind it, it is fantastic. We can do a whole pitch in between a training session, and that’s the job done for the week.”
Praising the battery life, James expresses satisfaction with the ES-860’s ability to complete a whole pitch on a single charge.
The machine’s reliability and solid build make it a trustworthy machine in the unpredictable weather of Wrexham.

Time to take play seriously
Two separate Select Committee Inquiries have recently focused on the role of parks and green spaces in the built environment.
The evidence put forward about the positive impact that parks and green spaces have on society was overwhelming – especially for children’s future health.
Over the past few months, Fields in Trust joined forces with Playing Out, researcher Tim Gill, and the Director of ZCD Architects, Dinah Bornat, to raise the profile of how better planning, building and urban design can enhance the health and wellbeing of children and young people – resulting in the Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (LUHC) Select Committee calling an inquiry.
“When the Inquiry was launched, there was a familiar refrain in many of the 100 or so written submissions: children have
less recognition in the planning process than bats and newts,” said Helen Griffiths, Fields in Trust’s Chief Executive. “The bats and newts have better PR people - obviously.
“Sitting on the panel giving evidence alongside like-minded colleagues, it was apparent the Committee was completely unaware of the extent of the problem. So, we ask, what key actions could Government take to redress the imbalance?
“The environment we live in, and particularly access to green space, has a major effect on us. This is even more prevalent for a child when it comes to their brain development, dictating their health later in life.
“Making sure that children have accessible places to play is crucial to improve on the mere 21% who meet the daily physical activity target, especially for the
1 in 8 households in the UK in areas that don’t have access to a private garden.”
Despite making up around 20% of the population, young people are routinely left out of discussions about the future of their neighbourhoods. Few practitioners are leading the way to do things differently.
The recent Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select (EFRA) Select Committee evidence session on Urban Green Spaces was another important opportunity to flag to Government the disparity in green space provision - particularly in areas of deprivation - and the failures in the current system to protect the future of these valuable spaces for everyone.
A progress report just published by The Office for Environmental Protection (OEP) makes it clear that the Government is largely off
CS100 from GreenMech ‘transforms business’
The team at Camel Valley Projects Ltd (CVP) Gardening & Property Maintenance admit to being ‘bowled over’ by the power and performance delivered by their new CS100 from GreenMech.
The chipper’s ability to handle wood and green waste of all shapes and sizes has resulted in improved efficiency and cost-savings on jobs conducted across the west coast of Cornwall – so much so that
Director Joe Herzberg claims the purchase via Vincent Tractors in early 2024 has ‘transformed his business’.
For chipping in confined spaces, GreenMech’s CS100 is the solution. At just 760mm wide, access to properties, pathways or hard-to-reach locations is no problem, with its 18hp electric start petrolengine providing reliable power for ‘on-the-spot’ chipping. “We’ve found it to
track to meet its environmental ambitions and legal obligations.
“The job of Select Committee inquiries is to find out more about the situation on the ground and to come up with recommendations to put to Ministers and hold
be easy to operate, simple to transport and it’s delivering the power and performance of a much bigger machine –we’re bowled over by what this machine can do,” he said.
Since its delivery, the CS100 has been flat out on a large estate project, and other jobs where material was safely stored ready to be chipped.

them to account,” she said. “The scientific evidence is indisputable and yet just these recent discussions alone demonstrate how disjointed the Planning System is on these interrelated issues. “There is little evidence so far of coherent leadership on parks and green
spaces but if it continues to fall between government departments - it will continue to impact on any progress in this space. It’s time, now more than ever, to take parks and play seriously.”

Urban paving repointing with GftK - 10 years of success
In 2013, Norwich City Council Highways Department had identified significantly increasing costs due to reoccurring problems with damage, premature breakdown, and urgent repointing requirements for urban paving.
This resulted in paving repair, replacement and repointing works needing to be carried out on an almost annual basis, at significant ongoing cost to the Council. Therefore, together with their Term Contractor, Tarmac Highway Services, they carried out extensive repointing trials using a wide range of different paving jointing materials and products.
The objective was to find the most effective, durable, and cost-efficient solution for town centre pointing and repointing works, and as a result of these trials, GftK vdw 850+ from
NCC Streetscape, was the clear winner and selected for use.
The range of different paving that the Highways team have successfully repointed over the last 10 years with the unique GftK jointing mortar, includes natural stone setts and slabs of granite, porphyry, limestone, sandstone, as well as concrete elements. The Project Leader recently commented: ‘The first phase that we installed in 2014 still looks as good as new. GftK vdw 850 has proven to be the best value for money jointing mortar we have ever used - and believe me, we have used them all! They also added: ‘Rapid installation with minimal cleaning, plus the ability to be applied in wet conditions, are real advantages for us.’

pavements to market squares and historic areas, is frequently required because the original cement-based pointing and/ or previous repointing, has deteriorated and failed. This risks the paving elements becoming loose and unstable, especially with smaller format paving (generally regarded as <400mm x 400mm), such as natural stone setts and cobbles, which then puts the public at risk. Very often, the root cause will be that the original pointing, or previous re-pointing, was carried out with perfectly good jointing products, but which were not suitable for application in the typical UK conditions at the time, e.g. application in cold and wet conditions, and with
residual water in the joints, and/ or inadequate initial protection and curing. No such problems with the unique GftK Paving Joint Mortars!
GftK vdw 850+ is probably the ‘Gold Standard’ of paving jointing, as it can be applied in cold and wet conditions, even in the rain and it self-compacts into the joints and hardens quickly.
In these pictures you can see some of the applications in and around Norwich City Centre since 2014, with these areas still looking ‘good as new’ in 2024.

Green-tech delivers new BNG biodiverse green roof wildflower mixture
The Government’s Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) policy is now effective, all developments in England must replace any biodiversity lost and add a minimum of 10% biodiversity to provide a net gain.
The resulting habitat will be secured for at least 30 years via planning obligations or conservation covenants, enforced by s106 agreements.
A brand of leading landscape supplier Green-tech, the team at John Chambers Wildflower Seed has worked with Bridgman and Bridgman to design a new BNG biodiverse green roof mixture.
Bridgman and Bridgman are specialists in the creation of
sustainable living roofs. They trialled the wildflower seed mix to ascertain the bestperforming species.
The final mixture comprises 40 species of native wildflower to ensure at least 25 species are present once the roof is established to meet the new legislation. The seed mix should be complimented with native sedum and dry grassland species as described in the guidelines.
John Chambers Wildflower Seed Technical Manager Georgia Gilbert explains: “The final mix contains native wildflower seed to combat the huge declines we have seen due to habitat loss, chemical use, and climate change. Native
species are incredibly valuable for our native wildlife. We also chose species that are suitable and perform well in green roof structures – ones that are drought tolerant, suitable for full sun and exposed conditions, and thrive in lightweight substrate.”
Green-tech’s Business Development Director Mark Wood, adds: “We have developed an interactive Biodiversity Net Gain map for use alongside the Biodiversity Metric to contribute to different design options, in the creation of a Nature Positive design. We aim to create a collaborative approach with an overview of enabling nature to thrive through considerate development.”

Blue green roof constructed with ACO’s RoofBloxx
ACO worked together with Beton Construction Services to design and specify an innovative blue green system that would manage stormwater runoff, improve resilience, and be the first of its kind in Dublin.
Under DCC’s Green Blue Roof Policy, all new developments with roof areas exceeding 100m2 need a blue green roof, which are recognised with helping reduce the risk of flooding, help mitigate climate change, whilst providing amenity and biodiversity.
DCC also identified that these multi-purpose roofs would be critical in a city like Dublin, where much of the land is already built up and space for sustainable urban drainage systems (SuDS) is limited.
This is where Beton Construction Services (Beton) and ACO
New RHS research reveals green façades boost biodiversity
Research by scientists at the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) shows that ‘green façades’ support a wide range of invertebrates, and demonstrates their important role in enhancing the biodiversity of urban areas.
Examining three different selfsupporting climbers, Hedera helix (common ivy), Parthenocissus tricuspidata (Virginia creeper) and Pileostegia viburnoides (climbing hydrangea), the research shows that plants grown against walls to create a green façade provided an important resource for invertebrates; the more vegetation there is, and the more varied, the more invertebrates are supported.
Whilst green walls are generally considered to bring wildlife benefits to urban ‘grey’ areas, this research is the first of its
kind to deliver evidence-based guidance on the subject which further encourages the creation of green façades in urban areas.
In towns and cities where garden space is at a premium, vertical greening is a positive solution for gardeners who want to improve their limited garden spaces and benefit wildlife.
Andrew Salisbury, Head of Plant Health at the RHS, said: “Greening walls with climbers and other plants creates places for a wide range of invertebrates, including beetles and a variety of predatory invertebrates, to live and to feed. In urban areas where many people have little space to garden they can bring huge benefits – not only supporting invertebrates, but providing shelter and food for birds and other wildlife too.”
In addition to improving biodiversity, green façades provide a range of other benefits including the regulation of temperatures, moisture retention, sounddampening and trapping of gaseous and particulate pollution. The research
was published as a paper, entitled Careful plant choice can deliver more biodiverse vertical greening (green façades) in the Urban Forestry and Urban Greening journal.

Building Drainage (ACO) joined forces to create the first ever blue green roof in Dublin.
ACO provided consultation for the design of the blue roof attenuation system including hydraulic calculations and rainfall event modelling, and supplied its patented RoofBloxx system to form the blue roof attenuation tank that sits on top of the building’s roof.
A key part of the consultation was ACO’s assessment of the hydraulic requirements, which was based on 1 in 100-year time series rainfall, as well as accounting for a 40% uplift in climate change. Following the assessment, ACO specified its RoofBloxx attenuation system to cover a catchment area of 131.8m 2 , installed on an inverted blue roof.
Introducing the ACO solution to an inverted roof separated the competing drainage requirements. By engineering an elevated shallow structural attenuation system that operates independently of the flat roof drainage system, it allowed the roof to be engineered to known standards and best practice, without compromising the ability of the roof to drain quickly in extreme circumstances.
A total of 240 85mm-thick RoofBloxx units were used to form the blue roof, stacked together in two layers and providing 3.77m3 of stormwater storage capacity. A 10mm drainage layer was used to create the structural drainage layer that the lined open top attenuation tank sat on.

Eden’s trailblazing sustainable office building
Eden, the £36 million, 115,000 sq. ft 12-storey office building in Salford, being developed by The English Cities Fund (ECF), has Europe’s largest living wall.
Ella Woodward, development manager at ECF, said: “Eden has been designed for communities and companies that place sustainability at their hearts.
“This place-changing building has been designed to push the envelope in terms of sustainable regeneration and highlight what can be achieved when like-minded partners work together to deliver something truly special for the benefit of everyone.”
Eden’s façade has been designed to remove air pollutants including carbon, reduce urban temperatures offering thermal benefits to
occupiers, and deliver a 174% net gain in the biodiversity of the area.
Each species of plant has been specially selected for its biodiversity, being rich in pollinators or the ability to mitigate air pollution. Alongside the English Thymus (Thyme Vulgaris) which is good for air quality, other plant species amongst those in the living wall include Hypericum Hidcote (St John’s Wort) which provides nectar and berries for birds, and Hyacinthoides nonscripta (Bluebell) which is an early source of nectar. Rainwater will be harvested and stored at the roof for use within the living wall’s irrigation system, with a mains water back up option should there be a shortage of rainfall.

Paving repointing and jointing solutions
Paving repointing is often required for all types of paved urban areas, from roadways and pavements to market squares, and all because the existing cement pointing has deteriorated and failed.
The failure may already be complete, or it is cracking and starting to break-up, and increasingly being washed and eroded out of the joints.
Frequently, the root cause will be that the original pointing, or previous re-pointing, was carried out with perfectly good jointing products, especially with well
proven cement-based products, which were not suitable for application in the conditions at the time, such as application in cold and wet conditions, and with residual water in the joints, and/ or inadequate initial protection and curing.

Keep that beauty spot beautiful in Spring
There are a couple of things we all know about water features: firstly they add beauty and bring a focal point to any venue, and secondly, as with anything in life, they require maintainence.
Here Robert Jackson, division manager for Otterbine distributor Reesink Hydro-Scapes, considers how water management is critical – and easy with Otterbine – for maintaining clean, healthy water as the weather warms up and to keep that beauty spot beautiful.
Water issues are caused by a lack of oxygen in the water
and become more prevalent in warmer weather. By making sure the water is well aerated, you prevent stagnation, keep algae and aquatic weeds under control, eliminate odours, prolong the life of the pond, lake or reservoir and benefit the environment.
Healthy ponds and lakes have the proper balance of oxygen and nutrients to sustain plants, fish and other living organisms. There are three sources for oxygen in the water – as a by-product of photosynthesis, from currents or wind pushing oxygen through the surface and via an aerator.
Why choose water aeration?
Increase the overall oxygen supply in the water by adding dissolved oxygen and you reduce and eliminate the use of chemicals.
Put simply, aeration is a better choice for the environment, providing another tick to the sustainability box of every venue.
Plus, adding diffused oxygen to the water column is a permanent solution – it increases water circulation, prevents stagnantthermally stratified water and reduces muck; restoring a
healthy, balanced ecosystem. With little to no maintenance required and a range of quality products which are built to last, Otterbine has some of the highest oxygen transfer and pumping rates in the industry with an average lifespan of 15 years.
Its range of products are trusted by customers the world over and come with warranties from distributor Reesink HydroScapes ranging from three to five years.

Agrovista Amenity launches Controls brochure
Agrovista Amenity, a leading provider of innovative solutions for turf and amenity management, proudly announces the launch of its new Controls brochure.
This comprehensive guide is a valuable resource for turf managers, offering essential information on plant growth regulators (PGRs), fungicides, herbicides, wetting agents, and much more.
In the ever-evolving landscape of turf management, Agrovista Amenity aims to empower professionals with the knowledge and tools needed to overcome challenges.
The Controls brochure features details on some of
the most innovative products on the market, including the recently launched Maxtima - a revolutionary turf fungicide, the highly regarded Attraxor plant growth regulator, the powerful Medallion TL fungicide, and a range of total and residual herbicides such as Roundup and Valdor Flex.
Other notable products highlighted in the brochure include Acelepryn insect control, Ferromex mosskiller, and the impressive range of Aqua-Zorb wetting agents.
Dr. Abigail Graceson, Technical Manager at Agrovista Amenity, emphasises the importance of tailored solutions, stating: “Our objective is to maintain healthy
Ascernity pays dividends from investing in dollar spot
The aim of starting disease control programmes with multi-active fungicides, including Ascernity and followed by Instrata Elite, has proven most effective in preventing impacts of later season diseases, according to Syngenta research.
With dollar spot in high-risk areas now regularly reported from early May, right through the summer and early autumn, the strategy to target the disease earlier and utilise more Integrated Turf Management practices were crucial in limiting the impacts.
Findings from a recent survey of greenkeepers and turf agronomists showed the serious severity of dollar spot that occurred last year
on courses south and south-west of a line from Manchester to Ipswich, with fewer outbreaks reported in the north and north-east or Scotland. The survey also found that most cases were reported on predominately fescue surfaces (over 40%), along with poa annua (31%) and, to a lesser extent, bentgrass. The number of instances reported on ryegrass was significantly less.
“The important approval for Ascernity use on golf greens and tees is hugely significant in giving greenkeepers a new option to cover dollar spot and other turf diseases from late spring, through to the autumn,” Syngenta Technical Manager, Sean Loakes reported.
plants while minimising the presence of undesirable fungal, insect, and plant pests.”
In a time of increasing legislative and environmental changes, making informed decisions becomes paramount, as these choices form the foundation of management plans that deliver high-quality amenity environments.
The Controls brochure goes beyond product listings, offering a better understanding of integrated pest management principles.
It equips turf managers with the knowledge required to navigate the complexities of product selection in the face of
legislative and environmental challenges. To further support turf managers, Agrovista Amenity emphasises the expertise of its representatives, who are qualified to BASIS and FACTS as a minimum. These professionals can provide personalised support in product selection and advice tailored to the specific environment being managed.

Ascernity combines two powerful active ingredients - difenconazole and Solatenol - in one product, targeting the pathogen in different ways for reliable control and reducing the risk of resistance.
“When we are looking for responsible and sustainable use of fungicides, using products with more than one mode of action, and in a planned programme with other proven options, is essential to minimise the risk of resistance developing,” he advocated.
“Furthermore, when you have a product such as Ascernity
that is highly effective on microdochium patch, dollar spot and anthracnose, as well as trials showing excellent results on take-all patch and fairy ring, the broad spectrum enables targeting of multiple diseases from a single application.”
Syngenta will be providing more guidance and advice through the summer for season long turf disease strategies utilising fungicide combinations.

Westermann brings business benefits for contractor
Henry Halliday & Son has offered a pressure washing service to mainly domestic clients within the East Yorkshire area for over 30 years.
Until May 2022 the firm used a petrol driven pressure washer on its work but were very aware of its limitations.
Pressure washing can be slow and creates a great deal of mess, so the firm chose the Westermann machines from SPA Power Machinery to address these issues.
Henry Halliday said his team had identified two key areas for improvement: “Firstly, pressure washing is a messy business, it creates a great deal of sludge than can be very time consuming to clean up. Using the Westermann moss brush gives an excellent clean dry
clean without the mess, making the job go quicker.
“Secondly, cleaning Tarmac can be difficult with a power washer, the Westermann brush is an excellent alternative. it can gently remove moss without the risk of damage.
“We purchased the Westermann Moss Brush primarily to clean Tarmac that suffered from heavy moss growth, we soon realised that it was also very effective at removing moss and smaller weeds from block paved driveways. We now use it on 90% of all our driveway cleans.”
A powered brush system, like the Westermann moss brush, can effectively clean fragile surfaces without causing damage.

Trade body appeal to tackle invasive plants
A national trade body is urging professionals to help curb the spread of invasive plants.
Experts at the Property Care Association (PCA) have produced a series of tips to help contain a range of nonnative weeds and prevent their potentially damaging spread.
The advice is part of ongoing work from the PCA to raise awareness of the issue.
Daniel Docking, the Property Care Association’s Invasive Weed Control Group Technical Manager, said: “Management is key and some simple actions can make a valuable contribution towards this.”
Where Japanese knotweed is present, seek specialist advice at the earliest possible stage.
Too often, we see ineffective control due to professional products being used against product label restrictions, which caused continual regrowth. The PCA always recommends seeking an expert survey of the site to confirm the presence of
an invasive plant, especially if Japanese knotweed is suspected. If suspicions are correct, work with a qualified PCA member to eradicate it.

BASIS encourage stakeholders to become OCR compliant
Amenity sector businesses and organisations are being urged to join the BASIS Amenity Assured scheme to ensure they are compliant with government regulations.
Local authorities and contractors working in the amenity sector who are subject to the Official Controls (Plant Protection Products) Regulations 2020 for the use of plant protection products (PPP), can now help to ensure their compliance with these new Regulations by joining the BASIS Amenity Assured scheme.

Dates for #GroundsWeek 2024 announced by the GMA
The Grounds Management Association (GMA) has announced that its annual awareness campaign, #GroundsWeek, is returning from 18 – 24 March 2024.
The campaign, now in its fourth year, recognises the work of turf care volunteers and professionals in the UK, with a focus on inspiring new recruits to consider a career in the industry.
Research carried out by the GMA over recent years has highlighted a potential employment crisis, with a lack of new recruits entering the industry and a significant number of existing workers leaving. It’s not all doom and gloom, however, as research carried out in 2023 revealed that more young people are working in the grounds management sector than in previous years.
Grounds staff under the age of 35 now make up 27% of the workforce compared to 19% in 2022. There has also been an increase from 3% to 5% in the number of grounds managers aged 24 and under, and an increase in the percentage of grounds managers stating that they became involved in grounds management due to apprenticeships from 13% to 16%.
The number of people who became involved in the grounds sector ‘by accident’ has also reduced from 13% to 10%.
The GMA’s ‘Sport’s Hidden Profession’ report in 2010 recorded that nearly 20% of grounds staff became involved by accident, therefore significantly more people are now making a conscious decision to pursue a career in grounds management. This change highlights that the
grounds care sector is becoming increasingly recognised as a viable career route which other GMA initiatives, like the Grounds Management Framework, support by providing a key path of development for those looking to progress in the sector.
Geoff Webb, CEO of the GMA, says: “A key part of our role advocating for the industry and our members is laying the foundations for new talent to enter the sector. It’s hugely encouraging to see, after three years, and lots of hard work introducing the sector to new audiences, that the number of young people entering the sector is starting to rise.
“There’s still a lot of work to be done, but initiatives like #GroundsWeek can
have a really important role in encouraging more people to consider working in our wonderful industry. To help raise awareness and make as much noise as possible, we’re encouraging grounds staff and
sports clubs across the country to engage with the campaign online and celebrate the vital contribution of grounds staff in making sport possible.”

Husqvarna extends professional robotic mower range
addition to the family of wire-free professional robotic mowers.
Using systematic cutting, the mower delivers high productivity and a cost-effective solution to smaller commercial areas. As an added bonus, it can cut patterns. The robotic mower will be available in 2024.
Since the introduction of robotic mowers, customers have asked for the possibility of cutting patterns in the lawn. Now, using systematic cutting, the new Automower 520 EPOS can mow in a series of preset designs that deliver a variety of patterns such as checkerboard, triangles, or diamond shapes.
The patterns are made possible by the robotic mower’s precision navigation and ability to quickly adjust the cutting height of its five-blade cutting discs. In addition, the new robotic mower’s mowing capacity is 5,000 sqm in 48 hours.
As with all EPOS navigated robotic mowers from Husqvarna, this model operates without boundary wire, which makes the installation robust and flexible. The use of virtual boundaries allows aerating, scarifying, and
digging without worrying about in-ground wires.
With EPOS, and the connected management system Husqvarna Fleet Services, the user has an ultra-flexible solution that facilitates scheduling and setting of cutting zones, which for instance enables stay-out zones during pollinating season. The Fleet Services application also allows the user to set mowing patterns as well as other hardware settings and software upgrades.

Craigmillar Park praise for Trilo M3
The M3 Multipurpose from Trilo has been praised by the team at Craigmillar Park Golf Club in Edinburgh for the labour savings it has brought to the effective management of their eco rough and quick clearance of leaves and debris.
The unit, delivered by Sherriff Golf & Turf, arrived just in time for a busy autumn and winter season but Golf Course Manager Stephen Sinclair is delighted to discover the versatility of the M3 will make it a machine for all seasons.
Like most parkland courses, Stephen and the team of three face the yearly challenge of managing leaf fall, with their previous method of cutting and mulching the material no longer providing a viable solution.
“From the first day, it has really impressed,” explains Stephen.
“We took delivery of the M3 in early November and it worked virtually non-stop for a month, removing leaves from all areas around the course –including bunkers where we can
simply suck them up with the Wanderhose rather than having to manually blow them out and then go along and collect them. The members noticed straight away the difference in both presentation and playability.
“We then saw the potential for using the M3 for cutting down our eco roughs and the results we’ve had here are outstanding! We have some areas of pretty heavy growth, but the flail shaft took these in its stride and the cleanliness of collection is head and shoulders above anything we’ve used before.”
The M3 Multipurpose from the Trilo range of vacuum collectors is a versatile one-pass machine for effective sweeping, scarification or cut and collection. Featuring the handheld Wanderhose, a high working speed and working width of 1.5m, the M3 is a popular compact unit finding year-round applications on sports turf and tasks around the golf course.

J Premier Pitch proves to be a game-changer
J Premier Pitch from Johnsons Sports Seed has been described as a ‘game-changer’ for Northampton Saints Rugby Club, delivering outstanding resilience, weartolerance and overall turf quality at both the stadium and new high performance training centre.
As one of just three clubs in the Premiership with an all-natural pitch, expectations and demands on the turf are high – but with the right seed, feed and maintenance programme in place, the team lead by Head Groundsman Andrew Miller are delivering on every front.
The cinch Stadium at Franklin’s Gardens has been the stage for a strong season for Northampton Saints, leading rugby union’s top division at the time of writing. Ensuring the aforementioned stage is set is Andrew and a team of three.
Andrew has been using the 100% perennial ryegrass mixture for the last nine years. The new 2024 formulation blends five top-rated cultivars to create the ideal winter sport mix, incorporating Monroe
and Gildara for significantly improved resistance to Brown Patch and other common turf diseases.
Trusted by many of Europe’s leading stadia, J Premier Pitch delivers proven play performance and outstanding visual merit.
“The turf quality and quick establishment have surpassed our expectations, vitally important with the small windows we’re given to grow the pitch back in after concert season,” he said. “It gives us more than just a great density of sward with vibrant green colour which looks fantastic in a stadium - the resilience and recovery is outstanding, particularly during intense periods of play and the bad weather we endure through the winter months.”
Besides the stadium, J Premier Pitch was also used on the replica stadium pitch at the club’s High Performance Centre – upgraded during the summer of 2022 and officially unveiled in April 2023.

Osca 3 elevates synthetic maintenance
James Mathewson, Head Groundsperson at Colliers Park National Football Development Centre in Wrexham, has found a game-changer in the Syn-Pro by SISIS Osca 3 for the upkeep of their synthetic pitch.
Colliers Park boasts state-ofthe-art facilities dedicated to football development. Among its features is a full-sized synthetic pitch, a crucial asset for training and matches.
The introduction of the Osca 3 marked a turning point in their synthetic maintenance strategy.
James elaborates, “We identified the Osca as a power brush that could reduce the de-compaction for us, keep the rubber crumb distributed, and keep the pitch in a good overall condition.”
The Syn-Pro by SISIS Osca 3 is a tractor mounted powered oscillating brush with a 1.9 meter working width and is equally effective when used on synthetic turf with sand or rubber infill.
The two oscillating brushes stand the carpet fibres up and redistributes the infill evenly, minimising compaction on the surface and improving its performance – giving consistent playing characteristics while preventing pile damage caused by reduced infill levels.

Redexim Top-Brush proves transformational
Initially purchased to overcome conditions described as a ‘worm cast factory’, a Redexim TopBrush is proving to be a true multi-tasker for the team at Malton & Norton Golf Club.
Head Greenkeeper Richard Jacques admits that prior to the purchase, the club underestimated how fundamental the 6m wide brush would become to the maintenance, with it successfully removing organic matter, improving cut quality and boosting presentation in twice weekly passes around the 27-hole complex.
At 6m wide, the Top-Brush is a highly productive maintenance solution. As well as changing brush direction, working depth can also be adjusted, making it a versatile tool for a light surface
brush – suitable for clearing dew, incorporating topdressing material or removing clippings - or a deeper, more aggressive surface agitation to effectively rid large areas of organic matter.
“Having used the Top-Brush for over a year, we’re now in a position of managing worm casts preventatively – by reducing OM and improving density – resulting in fewer instances, which is a big positive,” Richard said.
“That’s on top of hugely elevating the turf quality and appearance, not just on fairways but also approaches and semirough which is giving us a better product in the summer and one that’s more resilient to host play going into the winter months.”

Using Attraxor for Poa annua seedhead control
The
Chris Wood, Course Manager, heard about Attraxor’s ability to reduce Poa seedheads through fellow course managers and decided to try it on his greens on a trial basis.
Having just completed his first full year of treatment with the plant growth regulator (PGR), he believes it has had a high-quality impact on the greens at Shipley.
Chris said: “I mix 375 grams of Attraxor with 2 kilograms of nitrogen on the greens every 21 days, a routine which has resulted in reduced Poa seedheads and increased growth regulation. I was very impressed with the speed in which it gets working.”
Attraxor is formulated for rapid foliar uptake, as the active PGR ingredient, prohexadione, can
get to work in as quickly as four hours post-application. The active substance inhibits the gibberellic acid pathway, resulting in a reduction of turf height and turf biomass. Although it can still be applied in cooler soil conditions of around seven degrees centigrade, the key time to treat turf is March through to September for best results. Chris has been using Attraxor during this main season to support turf growth.
Chris said: “Alongside the decreased Poa, I have also noticed that the grass sward is smoother, resulting in a truer ball roll and increased playability –which is a bonus.”
Attraxor can also decrease time and money spent on turf maintenance due to its ability to regulate longitudinal turf growth, lessening the frequency of mowing and clipping volumes.

Clean and green mowing
Developments continue apace in ride-on mowers, with leaner running at the core, reports Jane Carley.
Economy and emissions are high on the priority list for purchasers of ride-on mowers. An increasing choice of battery powered models is now available, with battery technology improvements offering run-time and outputs that are viable for commercial operation.
Toro’s electric machines use smart controls to optimise energy consumption, ensuring efficient utilisation throughout the day, while real-time monitoring via the InfoCentre keeps operators informed of battery status.
Electric mowers offer significant long-term savings compared to traditional diesel-powered models, Toro points out, with no motor oil, spark plugs, or filters to change.
Toro
Manufacturers also point to significant savings in whole life costs for battery powered equipment with fewer service items, offsetting an initial steep purchase cost. Some companies will do the calculations for you, helping to make an informed decision.
Where diesel or petrol power is the preference, the latest engine technology and other design updates such as compacting clippings on collector mowers offer significant advances in efficiency.
The industry’s first all-electric out-front rotary mower, the Toro Groundsmaster e3200 features the same rugged chassis, commercial-grade mowing deck and operator controls as its predecessor, the Groundsmaster 3200, powered by 17 HyperCell batteries.
The patent pending lithiumion technology incorporates a management system designed to deliver consistent performance across the life of the machine.
With a 1.52m cutting deck, the e3200 is said to be capable of mowing up to 2.4ha/hr with working speeds up to 20kph.
As the industry continues to embrace electrification, the Toro Groundsmaster e3200 serves as a prime example of how sustainability and financial viability can go hand in hand. By prioritising both environmental impact and costeffectiveness, businesses can not only reduce their carbon footprint but also bolster their bottom line in the process.
Kubota introduced the Ze electric Zero-Turn range in November 2023. At the heart of the Ze is a 48V/10kW battery, offering a mowing capacity of 15000m2. The battery pack can be quickly and easily removed, and another fully charged battery fitted – with recharging done via the charge connector on the Ze, or independently via a charger compatible with UK and European sockets. A full battery recharge takes approximately five hours.
The Ze-421 is fitted with a 1.05m side discharge mower deck and is equipped with K-sense, which continuously monitors deck cutting speed to increase or decrease to suit conditions. A mulching kit is also available.
EGO Power Plus is expanding its battery powered ride-on range with two new tractor mowers.
The twin-blade tractor mowers utilise up to six EGO ARC Lithium 56V portable batteries, providing the same power and performance as the equivalent petrol machines.
Using EGO’s portable batteries enables the user to tailor the amount of capacity they use, giving them flexibility with run-time, cost, and usage in other EGO tools in the range.
Vince Brauns, Group Product Director at EGO, said:
“Following the success of our zero-turn Z6 range, we wanted to introduce more mowers to ensure we could deliver a product for every user’s needs. The new EGO
ride-on tractors set the standard in battery-powered collection and side-discharge mowers. Users can now cut substantially sized lawns in comfort and with complete confidence in battery longevity.”
The new range includes the TR3800E-B 98cm ride-on collection tractor mower and the TR4200E 107cm ride-on side discharge version. Both come with powerful twin blades and pressed steel decks.

The mowers feature a front mounting that can house up to six EGO batteries and features the company’s Peak Power technology, enabling the machine to draw on the power from all batteries at once. Both models come with the CHV1600E, a 1600W fast charger that fully charges six 10Ah EGO 56V ARC Lithium batteries in as little as three hours.
An LCD control display centrally mounted on the dashboard enables quick and easy adjustments to both travel and blade speeds as well as providing real time data on battery capacity.
A spring-assisted adjuster with eight pre-sets provide cutting heights of 25mm to 100mm. In addition, Bluetooth connectivity enables the user to remotely monitor machine performance and ensure that batteries are charged and ready for cutting.
Driver comfort includes an adjustable spring suspension seat and large, wide tyres which ensure both a smoother ride,
added grip and better weight distribution to protect lawn integrity. LED headlights enable safe use in low-light conditions while a front bumper helps protect the chassis from potential impact damage.
The TR3800E-B 98cm ride-on collection tractor mower has collection or mulch capabilities, with a 300-litre collection box to maximise cutting times. Large handles make removing and replacing the box easy, while a single level makes emptying the collection box quick and simple.
The TR4200E ride-on side discharge tractor mower offers even greater productivity when grass collection is not required. It can cover up to two acres on a single charge and has an enhanced 107cm cutting width.
Petrol and diesel choices
Getting more out of one machine is another route to efficiency and Amazone’s Profihopper range is designed to carry out a wide
range of tasks such as cut and collect, scarifying, wild flower meadow maintenance, spring bulb top clearing, autumn leaf collection as well as cut and drop mowing. The PH1250 and PH1500 models in 1.25m and 1.5m working widths feature the PowerCompactor collecting and conveying system, which uses longitudinal and cross conveyors to handle large volumes of wet grass, ideal for less frequent mowing regimes.
A fine turf finish can be achieved using H88 blades and scarifying, mowing, and leaf collecting can be carried out in one job.
Amazone points out that utilising a diesel powertrain instead of an electric system keeps weight down and output up. “This allows for longer working periods, increased power to weight ratio and making the machine overall more compact. A battery would be unable to maintain the Profihopper’s power for a full day’s work as well as making the
machine too large and heavy for turf work.”
The PH1500 now comes with ECO mode, said to be ideal for collecting foliage and for mowing in light growth conditions. The rotor is driven at a reduced speed of 2500 rpm, and the speed of the diesel engine is just 2000 rpm. This saves fuel and reduces the noise level by up to 4.5 dB.
Profihoppers are certified to run on HVO 100 (hydrotreated vegetable oil) fuels which lead to fewer emissions overall with the production and combustion of HVO fuel often releasing up to 90% less CO2 than regular diesel.
The new InsectGuard also makes sure that pollinators are not mown by the following cutting system, protecting the insect population.
ISEKI has recently introduced the SXG324 and SXG327 ride-on mowers which offer a number of improvements over the previous models to improve productivity and reduce running costs and environmental impact.
The ISEKI-built three-cylinder engine has a larger capacity than its competitors at 1123cc allowing it to produce its maximum power at only 2,600 rpm against an industry norm of between 3,200rpm and 3,420 rpm.
This results in lower noise levels, reduced fuel consumption and less wear and tear. Like other models in the ISEKI range the SXG324 and SXG327 are capable of using HVO renewable diesel.
Collectors have been enlarged to 590 litres for the low-tip version and 650 litres for the high-tip –so reducing the number times they need to be emptied.
The operator’s platform and controls have been redesigned to improve ergonomics and thus productivity including cruise control and adjustable steering plus the seat has now been upgraded to an adjustable Grammer suspension seat with arm rests.
To further enhance efficiency, the SXG may be fitted with the patented Handy Hatch that allows clippings and prunings to be dropped into the collector removing the need for a wheelbarrow or trailer.
Newly launched cut and drop versions have rear discharge decks of 1.2m (SXG324) or 1.2m and 1.35m (SXG327).
Out-front collecting mowers –SF237, SF544 and SF551 are powered by ISEKI built Stage V turbodiesel engines providing more horsepower and torque than previous engines whilst offering improved economy and lower emissions.
The more compact SF225 is powered by ISEKI’s economical 22.5hp diesel engine which is Stage V compliant but does not require the emission control equipment that must be fitted to engines that are over 25hp.

wheels or crabbing on banks, while less experienced operators can benefit from the ease of use and amazing manoeuvrability of this machine.
The robust steel frame is designed for durability even on challenging terrain and the Hydro drive system helps provide a
smooth mowing experience. The machines will mow an area of up to 13,000m² per hour with cutting deck widths of 122cm and 137cm.
Comfort is at the forefront of the machine’s design thanks to the high back seat with armrests and individually adjustable suspension. Cub Cadet offers a warranty of three years or up to 500 working hours (whichever comes first) –for commercial or private use.
Groundscare professionals looking for performance, comfort and the ability to work in the tightest of spaces when mowing have four options to choose from in John Deere’s zero-turn ZTrak range.
John Deere zero-turn mowers are based on a robust, heavy-duty frame including a ROPS. The highgauge PRO steel rotary cutting decks feature a deep mowing chamber designed to handle more grass for increased capacity. This increases airflow so that a quality cut can be achieved even when mowing at maximum speed.
The Z740R semi-commercial mower is powered by a Kawasaki 23.5hp commercial grade petrol engine, while the Z950R commercial machine has a larger Kawasaki 27hp petrol engine and is equipped with Michelin
Tweel X Turf airless radial tyres as standard (these are optional on the smaller model). Both mowers feature an adjustable operator platform and ComfortGlide suspension seat with armrests, with easy access to a quickchange height-of-cut dial and on-the-go tracking adjustments to maximise mowing performance. The Z740R offers a choice of high-capacity 1.22 or 1.37m sidedischarge decks, while the larger Z950R is available with 1.37 or 1.52m side-discharge and new 1.52cm rear-discharge decks.
Since 2021, John Deere’s Stage V diesel engine zero-turn mowers, the Z994R 24.7hp and Z997R 37.4hp models, can be fitted with a choice of 1.52m side-discharge and new 1.52m or 1.83m rear-discharge decks in addition to side-discharge options, depending on model.
The heavy-duty rear-discharge decks employ a single-belt deck design for easy maintenance, and are mulching enabled for a cleaner finish.
These have been introduced to the John Deere zero-turn mower range for the first time, specifically for those customers who require this particular configuration to meet contract requirements.
All these new zero-turn mowers also provide easy access for servicing and on-board diagnostics, while available attachments include a tool carrier, striping brush and storage tray.
Kubota now offers the FC Series out-front centre-collect mowers. The 25hp FC3-261 features a ‘floating’ out-front rotary or flail deck that delivers precise cut quality even on undulating ground.
The larger 50hp FC4-501, with 1.48 or 1.52m deck offers additional productivity in large spaces.
Kubota’s G-Series, powered by the company’s 25hp engine, has been designed for high performance, comfort and ease of operation.
The Kubota G261 offers a 1.2m cutting width and two collector options – a 560 litre low dump fabric grass collector or 640 litre high dump collector
Also available is the G261 RD with a robust, fully-welded 1.2m rear discharge (RD) mower deck and optional mulching kit. The Canycom range of ride-on brushcutters distributed by PSD Groundcare offer a simple design yet high level of performance.

Local councils, golf courses, caravan parks and colleges are just some of the organisations that have appreciated the versatility of Ventrac and how it has enhanced their turf maintenance operations.
Jason Brooks is the Course Manager at Stover Golf Club and says: “The team just love it. It’s simple to operate and suits our course as it makes light work of undulations and the bunker and tee banks that are a feature here. It’s certified to operate on 30-degree slopes, so from a health and safety point of view, it ticks all the boxes.
“We have numerous slopes that we used to strim, but we now use the
Ventrac and save multiple work hours, they get cut more regularly and the definition is much better. We are situated mainly on clay, so the light footprint of the machine is ideal. We also have a stream running through the course and even in wet weather we can still mow the banks.”
Brightlingsea Town Council’s Grounds Manager, Terry Hamilton, concurs saying: “We’ve certainly purchased a very versatile piece of kit. We’re replacing an aging triple reel mower with this Ventrac and the MU deck, which provides the same level of finish, so we’re not sacrificing quality or overall presentation. We have two recreation grounds to maintain,
one of which is on clay and just above the water table, so can be very wet at certain times of the year. The Ventrac, in its eight-wheel configuration, has an exceptionally low ground pressure of just 6 psi, enabling us to mow, whatever the conditions.”
Burnham Beeches Golf Club’s Course Manager, Lee Bishop, also appreciates Ventracs versatility: “The management team were so impressed we purchased the package within a couple of weeks of the demonstration! The Tough Cut deck is superb for managing our woodland margins; it takes down brambles and young saplings with ease and this helps to keep up the pace of play, making it easier for our golfers to find their balls after a wayward shot.
“The Contour deck is articulated and that makes it ideal for bunker surrounds and tee banks but it has been a godsend during the winter months as we have been using it on our fairways when it is too wet to cut with our fairway mowers. The Triple Cylinder unit is used for the perimeter fairway cut and this has enabled us to remove a dedicated machine from our fleet.”

Kubota appoints Ian Lauder
Ian Lauder has been appointed as Kubota (UK)’s agricultural and groundcare dealer manager for Scotland and the north of England.
Having gained an apprenticeship as a technician and developed a background in electronics, Ian’s
early career took him through the electronics industry before taking on the role of territory manager for a golf and turf care dealership. It was a career path that led him to join a turf machinery manufacturer. “Working at dealer and manufacturer level has given me
a great insight into many aspects of the machinery business,” said Ian. “So, when the chance came to join Kubota, it was an opportunity I had to grab with both hands.”

‘A perfect fit’ for career in professional groundscare
A former serviceman who started a new career as a technician working on machinery for groundscare professionals says the sector offers huge opportunities for those looking to resettle after life in the armed forces.
Andy Irvine is one of a number of individuals who have started new jobs at John Deere dealerships across the UK and Ireland following many years in service.
Based at Turner Groundscare Machinery near Chester since last April, Andy stepped into a field service technician role, supporting customers at worldrenowned football clubs, golf courses and rugby stadiums across north-west England.
He has recently been promoted to workshop manager and says there is job satisfaction and progression on offer for anyone
leaving the forces with the appropriate skills.
Andy served 14 years in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME), running workshops of up to 25 people on home soil and
during overseas deployments. He worked on a wide variety of machines ranging from chainsaws to quad bikes and diggers to main battle tanks.
