Importance of public playgrounds confirmed by new study
the garden, playgrounds are the most popular spaces for outdoor play at least once a week, closely followed by green spaces, and they are also the third most adventurous place for children’s play.
The paper’s lead author, Professor Helen Dodd, says: “We can see that playgrounds and green areas are critical spaces for children’s play, particularly outdoor, adventurous play.
Chair of the Association of Play Industries (API), Mark Hardy, said the study confirms the essential role that public play areas have in the physical and mental health of children.
“Playgrounds are vital community assets which have a significant impact on children’s health and wellbeing,” he continued.
a dramatic rise in footfall in public play facilities over the course of the pandemic, demonstrating how important these assets are to children and local communities.
Free-to-access, public playgrounds are the most common places for children to play according to a new national survey from the University of Reading.
In the largest study of play in Britain, children on average spent more time playing in playgrounds than any other
place. The British Children’s Play Survey was conducted with a nationally representative sample of 1919 adult respondents who had a child aged 5-11 years.
The survey asked parents in April 2020 to respond about normal life before Covid-19 restrictions. Away from home and in
“It is therefore crucial that all children have access to spaces like these for their development and wellbeing.
“Providing the spaces is not enough though, urban planning must take into account how children and families will travel to and access these spaces and they need to be engaging and interesting places for children’s play.”

As the industry starts to make in-roads towards recovery from the impact of the pandemic over the last 12 months, one sector continues to campaign for greater recognition of the damage caused by Covid-19.
Research carried out by the Association of Play Industries showed that spending in recent years on play facilities has fallen by 44 per cent since 2017/18, with 347 playgrounds closed since 2014. Now a new Parliamentary Committee report has called for investment in the UK’s playgrounds to halt and reverse the alarming decline in their numbers and safeguard children’s mental health. Outdoor play is now more important than ever and the recent restrictions have highlighted how essential public playgrounds are to children’s health and wellbeing.
We fully support the API’s calls for a “summer of play” to kick-start greater awareness of the importance of play facilities and to ensure existing areas are properly funding and new playgrounds are provided. This month we also take a detailed look at our world-leading professional groundscare sector with our special supplement. This summer is also crucially important for the groundscare market, with a number of outdoor events set to provide the first industry platforms and showcases since January 2020. This month we look at Grass Cutting Machinery, Brushcutters and Battery Power products.
There are also regular insights into the industry, from machinery and equipment case studies to a look at the latest soft landscaping products. We also have the latest news and updates ahead of what promises to be a busy and important summer. We will continue to support all aspects of the world-class work our industry does each and every day, with an emphasis in the coming weeks on securing greater Government support for the play and activity sector.

Assuring the amenity sector
With essential travel and transport continuing and more people making use of public outdoor spaces through the pandemic, the requirement for amenity work has not stopped, meaning the importance of holding a stamp of assurance also continues.
Lindsay Smith, BASIS auditing and compliance manager, recommends that amenity contractors achieve the Amenity Forum’s ‘Amenity Standard’ to provide reassurance to the public that they are operating safely and effectively.
“In order to meet this ‘umbrella’ industry standard, contractors must be part of an assurance scheme, such as BASIS Amenity Assured scheme or Lawn Assured scheme, which demonstrate the implementation of best practice methods, compliance with regulations and sustainable operation,” she says.
“To
businesses must participate in an annual twopart audit, the first of which is a comprehensive questionnaire to be completed internally.
“This is followed by an on-site visit by one of BASIS’ team of expert independent auditors where the questionnaire is reviewed and verified.”
Lindsay explains that this should not be a daunting experience. “The auditors aren’t there to catch you out, they’re happy to help and advise members of the scheme to ensure industry standards are upheld to protect both environmental and human health.
“These audits have been able to run throughout lockdown, and we continue to ensure that every visit is socially distanced, and auditors are
Volunteer Support Team named for 149th Open Championship
The return of The Open Championship this July will see BIGGA members from all over the United Kingdom leap into action once again as the BIGGA Volunteer Support Team takes responsibility for ensuring the Royal St George’s bunkers are in top condition for the world’s best golfers.
Following the rescheduling of the 149th Open Championship due to the COVID-19 pandemic, BIGGA is delighted that the R&A has requested the assistance of its members in the staging of the event. Members who were selected for the postponed championship in 2020 have been invited to participate this year and are now looking forward to another incredible week of championship golf.
This will be the fourth time a volunteer team of BIGGA members has assisted at an Open Championship at Royal St George’s, having also taken part in 1993, 2003 and 2011. The bunkers at Royal St George’s
Golf Club are among the most famous in golf, with the giant ‘Himalaya’ on the 4th hole providing an intimidating test, not just for the golfers who land in the hazard, but also the members of the support team who will recreate its condition afterwards.
BIGGA CEO Jim Croxton said: “A place on the Open Support Team is one of the most exciting opportunities we offer our members and I’m delighted that after such a dark year we were able to extend the invite to those members who missed out in 2020 due to the postponement of the championship.
“The Open remains for me the world’s greatest golf tournament, we’re thrilled to be able to support the R&A in its staging and everyone at BIGGA is looking forward to giving our all and playing our part in ensuring the 149th Open is Royal St George’s best yet.”

“There’s no time like the present to join an amenity assurance scheme if you haven’t already. Not only is it good practice and important for demonstrating suitability for a job to a potential
employer, but it’s likely that the Amenity Standard may become part of the Government’s plans in the future.”
Lindsay explains that as part of Defra’s review of the National Action Plan for the Sustainable Use of Pesticides there is consultation on areas of
pesticide usage including IPM (Integrated Pest Management) which includes weed control.
“I’d strongly advise businesses sign up now, so that they’re

RT Machinery celebrates 20th anniversary
Leading groundscare business RT Machinery is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2021 and looking forward to the next 20 years.
From humble beginnings with a summerhouse office at the bottom of the garden and a small workshop, to a very workable farm-based premises, 20 members of staff and the appointment of a Royal Warrant in 2018, the company has continued to develop over the last two decades.
Managing Director Richard Taylor had the drive, belief and vision from day one to grow a business with customer service and a range of innovative, reliable products at the core. “At the tender age of 19 I learnt that delivering what your customers want and need is really important and that certainly helped me to build RT Machinery,” he explained.
“It’s always been about going the extra mile and that’s as true today as when we started, not forgetting that the ethos has to run throughout the whole team to ensure we look after every customer.
“It’s also been important for me tto have family involved along the way - three generations with a fourth lining up in the background. Between them and the fantastic “family” team we have in place, we’ve been able to generate growth with
enthusiasm, education and investment for the future.
“One more vital ingredient has been the whole idea of sustainability, which has grown beyond our original vision in 2001 of seeking out new technologies and products that work within our environment sympathetically. Today that focus spreads to every area of our business, from the recycling of waste, to efficient use of resources and a genuine will to keep improving our contribution to the sustainability of our planet. We still have a long, long way to go.”
There have been a good number of awards over the years and RT Machinery is delighted to place its Royal Warrant amongst them.
Although traditional celebrations remain on hold at present, the company will be marking the 20th anniversary throughout 2021 and embarking on a number of new initiatives to highlight the development of its operations, training and commitment to the environment.
The annual RTM Show is scheduled to take place on September 8, 2021, and in the meantime RT Machinery will continue to focus on its day-to-day work and playing a part in helping to steer the industry out of the pandemic and towards recovery.

Green-tech has added Postsaver Pro-Set Rigid Post Fixing Foam to its extensive product portfolio.
Postsaver Pro-Set Rigid Post Fixing Foam is heralded as a revolutionary and convenient alternative to concrete post mix for installing fence posts incredibly quickly and easily.
Different from anything that is currently on the market, its innovative formula makes it a fast, light and durable expanding resin foam which can be used for installing all post types including wood, steel and PVC in the ground. A 1.25kg bag of Pro-Set is equivalent to 40kg or two bags of post concrete which saves users having to lift heavy bags of post concrete.
Chris Swan, Green-tech’s Purchasing and Product Development Manager
comments: “This is a great product, and I am pleased we are able to offer it to our customers, many of whom can be on site without access to water. Unlike concrete this needs no water and with a 97% weight reduction over the equivalent concrete alternative it is so light it can be carried easily. We believe it offers our customer a welcomed alternative.”
Pro-Set is a high performance, hard resin foam that expands to provide superior lateral support for any fence post installation. It is supplied in small, clean lightweight bags. The user simply removes the dividing strip, shakes the bag for 60 seconds then pours the liquid in the hole around the post. It is incredibly fast setting it will reach full strength in 90 minutes.

As part of its role in promoting best practice in all aspects of amenity management, the Amenity Forum has released a new digital publication entitled aptly enough ‘Amenity Innovation’.
It is intended to be a twice per year publication with articles on aspects of innovation and research. In the first edition, there are articles from Professor Alan Gange from Royal Holloway, University of London, on biological control, from Dr Ruth Mann from STRI on innovations in sports, lawn and urban green spaces and from Dr Penny Hundleby from the John Innes Institute on genome editing and what it can offer.
Ian Graham, from Complete Weed Control, also considers what innovation can offer in his area of work.
As the independent chairman of the Amenity Forum, John Moverley, says in introducing the publication: “Undoubtedly much is happening in all aspects of amenity space and sports surface management and a publication such as this is seen as giving opportunity for all in the sector to hear of particular projects, innovations and current research ideas.”

New patio completed with specialist products from NCC Streetscape
Contractor Fairway Drives & Design worked closely with its client to produce a right ontrend patio design, using the latest external porcelain tiles in combination with traditional tumbled granite setts for striking feature edging and detailing.
To complete this for practical reasons, they also wanted to use the same jointing system for both materials, which then also had to be able to withstand frequent jet washing of the paved surfaces to keep the garden in tip-top condition.
After some research online and then talking to NCC streetscape, they identified that GftK’s vdw 850+ was the ideal solution for both, plus at this early time of the year, they would not be restricted in trying to fi nd
a suitable weather window to complete the pointing.
This is because the vdw 850+ can be applied at low temperatures and in wet weather, which together with its speed of installation.
This was naturally also an attractive advantage to Fairview Drives & Design, who were to be a first-time user of this unique paving joint mortar.
The result - overall ease of application with minimal cleaning works, producing a highly aesthetic and durable finish.
This proved a win-win for the owner and their contractor.

NCC involved in Syke Pond paving scheme
Syke Pond is a one-acre lake that is up to 6m deep and home to fish such as carp and roach, as well as other wildlife, on Cronkeyshaw Common near Rochdale.
The York Stone perimeter, as well as its access footpaths had been repointed several times over the years with sand and cement, as well as proprietary pointing products, but all soon failed, breaking up and presenting a hazard for the public.
The local authority wanted to resolve this issue once and for all, so they asked Marchbridge to find a tough and durable product to do the job and last.
York Stone paving is difficult to repoint successfully because the joints can be different widths with angled edges, which causes variable shrinkage and thermal
movement making any cementbased material crack and fail.
Also the joints must also be kept wet, but with no standing water for pointing, which is diffi cult and so areas will be too dry, as water is drawn out of the mix disrupting correct hydration, or areas of residual water will change the water to cement ratio, meaning shrinkage cracking is guaranteed.
GftK’s vdw 850plus however, is ideal. This is a 2-part, epoxy resin based, epoxy bound, coated aggregate that hardens without shrinkage and has the ideal correlation of strengths and e-modulus to accommodate the differences durably for the long term.

Switch to Redexim proves a win-win
Bonnyton Thistle Football Club now have complete flexibility and control over the maintenance of their full-size synthetic pitch thanks to the recent purchase of a Verti-Groom EV and Dragmat from Redexim.
Having previously hired in subcontractors, the switch to an in-house programme has not only saved the club money but has improved the condition of the playing surface.
“The results we were getting with our contactors was not up to the standard we were looking for, so Sports Labs pointed us in the direction of Ian Lauder at Redexim” explains Ian, who has been involved with the club in various capacities since 1978.
“We decided on a Dragmat which we’re using for the regular brushing three times a week, and a VertiGroom EV to conduct a deeper, more thorough brush once a week.”

ICL integral to fairways recovery
Ian Cambridge, Course Manager at Saffron Walden Golf Club in Cambridge, has revealed how the correct advice, seed, and nutritional products from ICL have been integral in helping the fairways recover from drought.
Ian contacted ICL and Andrew Pledger (Technical Area Sales Manager) visited the East Anglian club. He and Ian walked around the course looking at the conditions and probed into the soil to see what could be done.
It was at this point that Andrew suggested a programmed approach which centred around ICL’s recently launched Vitalnova Links bio-stimulant.
Vitalnova Links consists of a unique combination of concentrated seaweed extract Vitalnova SeaMax and the proven biostimulant Vitalnova Blade. In turn, the formulation brings together and accentuates the benefits of both products.
Vitalnova Links was combined with a wetting agent and 8kg of a water soluble 35-0-5 fertilizer.
Andrew also advised, that due to not having any irrigation capacity, Ian should not overseed again until the autumn. This time, however, Andrew recommended that Ian use a multi-blend mixture consisting of rye, fescue and SSMG (Smooth Stalk Meadow Grass).
ProSelect 2 Tees/Fairways is proving to be an extremely popular choice with golf courses throughout the UK and beyond. The mixture is a blend of fine fescues and perennial ryegrass which creates a turf surface that can recover strongly from divoting.
The blend contains Traction smooth-stalked meadow grass and Torsion TRT perennial ryegrass to provide rhizomatous and Turf Repairing Tiller (TRT) growth for extra durability and recovery from divots. It is renowned for providing great colour, all-round disease tolerance and close mowing tolerance.

Stronger sward for Gloucester Rugby
Gloucester Rugby Head Groundsman, Stuart Lambert, believes that the use of Attraxor® plant growth regulator (PGR), has helped him to achieve a stronger sward while simultaneously reducing the amount of Poa annua.
After carrying out a mini renovation in June last year, Stuart applied 1.1 kg/ha of Attraxor® with 20kg of 46-0-0 nitrogen fertiliser.
Attraxor® contains prohexadionecalcium, a new active ingredient that regulates growth and also limits the spread of Poa annua by reducing seed-head production.
Following the first application Stuart is now confident that Attraxor® will form an important part of his overall maintenance plan.

New automatic self-cleaning disc filtration for irrigation
The use of reclaimed water or other lower quality water sources is becoming more common in irrigation projects, whether commercial or residential.
To address the issue, Rain Bird now offers the HDF Series of automatic self-cleaning disc filtration equipment.
Within an irrigation circuit, the HDF Series will act as a primary filter for the water source and is located after the pump. Having then passed through backflow and master valve stations, the filtered uncontaminated water is then distributed via any secondary filters to the chosen nozzles, rotors or in-line drip irrigation.
The Rain Bird irrigation controller is highly flexible and allows filtration and cleaning cycles to take place without any interruption to flow to the system.
The HDF Series is specifically designed to be used within irrigation systems where manual cleaning would be difficult, time consuming or unwieldy. Three different units provide varying levels of filtration efficiency and capacity. For flexibility, they can operate with or without electricity and include control units that run on 220V AC or 12V DC. The units are manufactured from tough engineered plastics and materials resistant to rust and corrosion from chemicals or water.
Units are pre-assembled and wired for easy installation. All HDF units feature a patented anticlogging device that generates a helical centrifuge effect moving a high percentage of particles that are suspended in water away from the disk. This ensures optimal performance resulting in water savings, reduced backwash frequency and minimum maintenance requirements.
Choosing the correct HDF Series unit is based on establishing the quality and dirtiness of the water source, determining the required filtration grade and then calculating the number of filters required. The filter cartridge is made up of a number
Combination ticks the boxes for Eastleigh FC
Managing a high wear pitch, on a relatively tight budget is probably a story with which most non and lower league club grounds managers can relate.
For Eastleigh FC Head Groundsman Dan Barnes, the task is made slightly easier by getting the right seed in the ground first and foremost – and for this, he turns to Johnsons J Premier Pitch.
Along with delivering superior wear tolerance, its resistance to disease has meant Dan has only applied fungicide once in the last four years.
Last winter, Dan supplemented Premier Pitch with Johnsons J 4Turf to benefit from the lower temperature germination of DLF’s tetraploid ryegrass. “This gave the pitch a real boost through the winter and undoubtedly helped us get through a fixture pile-up we had in February 2021 where we hosted five games in a 19-day period.
“The increased root length we get with the J 4Turf mixture provides great additional strength and, along with J Premier Pitch, recovers brilliantly.”

INFINICUT fleet becomes the new way for Wembley
Wembley Stadium, the very heart of English football, is now the home for five 34” INFINICUT FL mowers.
While the INFINICUT’s lithium battery power fulfils The FA’s drive towards increasing sustainability, and saw them make the shortlist, it was the functionality of the floating head units coupled with the quality of cut that sealed the deal for Grounds Manager Karl Standley.
Sustainability has been a key issue for The FA Group since the new Wembley Stadium opened its doors in 2007.
The sustainability strategy, governed by FAST – The FA
Group’s Sustainability Team –is actively looking at ways of reducing both waste and the use of fossil fuels, meaning that when it came to looking for a new fleet of stadium mowers, the electric route was the way to go.
However, as Karl explains, “Having an electric mower is great, but with one of the world’s most iconic pitches to present and a hugely varied schedule of both sports and events, it is crucial that any equipment we invest in delivers from an operational perspective.”
“Lockdown last year gave us the opportunity to really look in-depth at the different options available. Three things
really stood out for me with the INFINICUT machines – one was the battery life; another was the versatility but perhaps the biggest thing was the balance.
“A football pitch will never be 100% even, there will always be an undulation of a couple of millimetres here and there and with the INFINICUT, it almost ‘sticks’ to the surface. The floating head reads the pitch, every camber, every tiny movement and the whole team was very impressed by that and it shows in the quality of finish.”
Since taking delivery of the quintet of 34” mowers in the Autumn of 2020, the INFINICUT’s are now
the main machines used for preparing the playing surface, primarily down to the cut quality. However, the additional benefits of the battery technology are also making themselves apparent.
“We’ve had all five machines running together in preparation for a number of fixtures and the silence in the stadium is evident. It’s an eerily quiet experience – prep has never been quieter - but the difference has also been noticed by our colleagues and the TV crews we have on site.”
Karl adds, “In addition, the massive reduction in HAV for the operators is another
important benefit that has come to light. We test all of our equipment annually to enable our team to keep an accurate track on exposure and in the last round of tests, the INFINI’s came out with the lowest HAV score of the equipment we have.”
With the INFINICUT fleet delivering on all fronts for the Wembley team, the benefits are also due to be felt further down the chain with The FA actively working on finding the previous mower fleet a new home at clubs and organisations at grassroots level.

Jacobsen double from Fairways GM
Track Manager, Darren Bissett, says Hamilton Park’s turf will be more than ready for the start of their flat racing season scheduled to begin in May.
One huge positive for 2020 was that local grounds care dealer, Fairways GM, delivered two new Jacobsen mowers - the HR500 Rotary Mower for the track and the TR320 for Hamilton Park’s extensive fine turf areas.
“During the racing season we like
to cut the day before a fixture, and then again 48 hours afterwards,” he explained. “Height of the cut is set at 6cm for the next month or so and when racing starts, we’ll allow it to grow a bit longer before cutting it to around 9cm.
“Changing the height of cut on the decks takes around half an hour and it’s a case of moving just ten pins, so it’s very straightforward.”

Battery power provides a
Now is the time for professionals to harness the power of battery technology. With climate change leading the agenda and the UK government pledging to cut carbon emissions by 68% by 2030, there is increasing pressure on every industry to follow suit and take steps to slash emissions.
For professionals, reducing their environmental impact has never been easier, with advancements in battery technology offering a suite of benefits, from performance through to usability.
Vince Brauns, Group Product Manager` at EGO, reveals battery-powered mowers have seen a surge in growth in recent years, including for professionals where power output and runtime are primary concerns. He said battery technology has now come so far with the latest mowers offering the best of both worlds – reliable, zero-emission power and the highest standards in cutting performance.
“Alongside performance, EGO’s range of mowers prioritise
everyday usability, which sees ergonomics and innovative features play a significant role,” he continued. “From comfortable ergonomics which ensure easy and safe operation through to innovative technology which supports users to navigate everyday challenges, EGO’s mowers are designed with gardeners in mind. Added to this, a number of kits – including a rear roller and mulching kit – support mowers to be adapted to fulfil specific requirements.”
Demonstrating this approach to design, the latest addition to the EGO range (LM2130E-SP), is built around EGO’s Arc Lithium battery technology and features a Select CutTM multi-blade system which delivers a higher quality cut every time. The 52cm cutting width makes the mower perfectly suited to wider lawns, while an extra-large 70L cutting bag aids usability.
More widely, battery-powered mowers provide numerous benefits that petrol power struggles to match. This includes reduced vibration which
decreases the risk of injuries such as Hand Arm Vibration, alongside reducing noise.
“Ensuring mowers stand up to the demands of commercial use, EGO’s range of modular batteries provide ample power dependent on the battery specification chosen,” said Vince. “For example, with the LM2130E-SP mower, EGO’s popular 7.5Ah battery can cut up to 1,000sqm on a single charge and is ready to use again after only 60 minutes using EGO’s marketleading rapid charger, ensuring reliable and consistent power throughout the day.
“The entire battery range varies from 2.5Ah – 10Ah batteries, giving users complete control over the power needed for the job. As well as being used in mowers, EGO’s batteries are designed to be interchangeable across its range of equipment, enabling users to easily switch between tasks.”

Kubota’s game-changing G Series
Enquiry 53
With grass roots sports clubs enjoying the return to action this spring, Kubota’s new G Series ride on mower is proving a game changer for Marston Saints FC in Oxford.
The community football club has two fields near the city centre, one of which is Parish land and other rented from the city council.
An enthusiastic committee of volunteers takes care of everything from organising training and fixtures to grounds maintenance and for Claire Cole that includes specifying equipment.
“We had an old tractor and mounted mower, but were limited on who could drive it, plus it was unreliable,” she explains. “I contacted Phil Garrod of Elite Turf Solutions, the contractors who carry out renovation works at our ground, and asked for help in finding a replacement.”
He suggested that the club might be eligible for a Football Foundation grant to help fund a mower purchase, and was in no doubt about the brand of mower to choose.
“He immediately recommended Kubota because of the reliability and simplicity of operation the brand offers,” says Mrs Cole.
“He then put us in touch with dealer George Browns, who have been exceptionally helpful in finding the right mowing solution.”
A number of upgrades have been made on the G231 which features a new Stage V-compliant 22hp Kubota engine, new hydrostatic transmission designed to increase traction and grip and an electromagnetic PTO clutch for consistent cutting performance. Cut width of 1.22m makes the mower highly productive.
The mower is being used to cut and collect during the spring growing season, and will have a rear discharge adapter fi tted for dry conditions. An improved collecting system on the new G-Series features a wider and taller chute with a shorter travel distance between the deck and the grass collector enabling effortless grass fl ow and reduced clumping.
“We’ve been really pleased with the quality of cut, even in the wet weather in the run-up to reopening the club and on the uneven conditions in the back field, where moles moved in during lockdown,” comments Mrs Cole.
“We’ve also found the Kubota mower highly manoeuvrable –it’s stored in a container with tight access, but goes in with no trouble at all.”
Wet or dry grass, long or short, collect or mulch, the PH 1250 and PH 1500 models take it all in their stride.
And it’s that flexibility that sets the Profihopper apart from the crowd.
The sharpened wing blades on the horizontal SmartCut rotor cleanly cut and shred the grass before conveying it via the cross auger on to that unique second vertical auger to be packed into the collection hopper - meaning less time emptying and more time mowing. To add to that versatility, the sward is rolled after cutting and scarifying comes as standard.
The more than adequate power is provided by engines that are already Stage V Exhaust emission compliant and require no AdBlue.
Don’t compromise - choose the machine that comes with more compaction built-in for maximum work rates and less emptying.

Tips for buying a new ride-on mower
When it comes to purchasing a new ride-on mower, there are many manufacturers and models currently available.
Whether you require 2wd or 4wd, petrol or diesel, groundtip or high-tip, there are lots of options.
But, what should you be looking at? Les Malin, Managing Director of Etesia UK answers some common questions.
Q1. Will a ride-on mower cut and collect in the wet and leave a cut comparable to a pedestrian machine?
The obvious answer is some will, while some will not, but the ones that can will be far quicker over a large area compared to a pedestrian mower. However, there is still a need for smaller pedestrian machines, due to access and transport etc. When it comes to cut and collect systems, Etesia is the innovator of every other machine you see on the market today.
The French based company created a patented system in the late 1980’s and quite simply,
the system is unrivalled. Where models such as our Hydro 80 or Bahia ride-on mowers are useful, is small access points such as gates etc. The British climate is notoriously wet, and on most days when it hasn’t rained, the grass may still be damp, so it’s important to have a machine that is up to the job of cutting and collecting in the wet.
The Etesia Professional ride-on mower range have been designed and developed especially for these conditions. They will pick up wet grass clippings and even leaves in the autumn and have been designed to never clog and everything is fully automated.
Q2. Can you empty the grass box easily without leaving the seat?
All Etesia ride-on mowers have the option of emptying the grass box directly from the driver’s seat, without ever having to leave the machine. In our larger Buffalo, H100 and H124 models, you can empty the grass box up to 1.24m above the ground which is very useful if you need to empty grass clippings into a skip or hitip vehicle for recycling. Unlike
competitor machines, they are designed to be able to tip the heaviest of loads without needing additional counterweights to aid stability. This reduces the overall weight of the machine.
The most notable benefit is the fact that Etesia machines do not require any additional accessories to unblock them when emptying the machines. Everything is automatic so no accessories or rattling of levers are required –you can simply cut, collect and empty the grass box all while sitting on the machine
Q3. Can I cut and collect and mulch with the same machine?
Mulch cutting has become very popular over the years. Predominately, it’s used as a time-saving form of grass cutting as there is no need to collect clippings or debris and empty. There are also other benefits as mulching can often mean ‘greener’ grass, particularly in times of drought, as the nutrients are put back into the soil after a cut. Most of the Etesia machines have the option of being able to cut and collect or mulch – it really depends on the users’
preference. Just remember the golden rule when mulch cutting and only cut a third of the grass height in a single cut.
Q4. Will a ride-on mower cut high grass?
We do sell a range of Attila brushcutters which have been specifically designed to cut rough grass or brambles and have been known for ‘what-ever’ they can push over, they can cut’, however our ride-on mowers are an affordable solution for taming high grass paddocks and fields, meaning that one machine can be used for a multiple of different tasks.
Q5. Will I be able to fit attachments to a ride-on mower or will I need a tractor?
That really depends on the type of attachments you would like to fit. However, Etesia also sell a range of attachments from scarifiers, snow plough, sand spreader, weeding brush and also a street sweeper which means that one ride-on mower really can be a 365-days-a-year workhorse.

NHS Tayside goes for ISEKI SF450 with Muthing flail
Malcolm Ross, Grounds Maintenance Manager at NHS Tayside has been buying kit from local ISEKI dealer Fairways GM’s Kinross depot since its inception, 18 years ago.
His team is responsible for grounds maintenance of NHS Tayside’s portfolio of properties throughout Angus, Dundee, Perth and Kinross, which covers a variety of NHS locations of different sizes, settings and challenges.
“We’ve had a long association with Fairways GM over the years, purchasing a range of products but the first machine was our Iseki SF300 in 2003,” he said.
“Iseki build is renowned; our SF300 has been super reliable so it’s testimony to its excellent quality that it is still going strong.”
According to Malcolm, the SF450 has the adaptability his team requires: “We’re hoping it’s as consistently reliable as the last.
“Our previous out-front Muthing Flail proved its worth on our Ransome HR 300 so the new cut and collect facility on the ISEKI SF450 will be a big plus for us; the engine is more powerful, so more able to deal with wet and longer grasses when needed.”

Kubota has expanded its extensive range of track dumpers with the launch of two new Stage V emissions compliant models.
The KC300HR-5 and KC300H-5, are compact and powerful and are ideal for transporting construction materials quickly and efficiently, especially in rough terrain.
Both models have a maximum load capacity of 2,875 kg and are capable of transporting large quantities of material in a short time. In the H version, the machine is equipped with a hydraulic three-sided tiltable loading trough.
The tipping angle of this model is max. 55°, the tipping angle of
the HR version is max. 84°. In addition, the tipper is equipped with a stepless, hydraulic 180° rotation function (HR - hydraulic rotation 90° right / 90° left). With this version, the rotation function can be actuated at the same time as the tipping of the body.
This gives the operator the great advantage of being able to unload the bulk material with pinpoint accuracy, which significantly increases the flexibility of the machine.
The heart of these two models is the liquid-cooled Kubota diesel engine V2403, which complies with the current European exhaust gas stage V.
The four-cylinder diesel engine
enables the machine to be operated with a high degree of flexibility. It provides the operator with a wide power spectrum in all working situations and, if required, a high driving speed of up to 11 km/h, even when loaded.
Other design features include a robust crawler chassis that guarantees the operator efficient and comfortable working.
Ground clearance is 330 mm, ensuring avoidance of obstacles and making machine use on uneven terrain much easier.
In addition to outstanding versatility and performance, special emphasis was also placed on driver comfort when
developing these new track dumpers. The comfortable, reversible seat allows the driver to turn 180 degrees and face the opposite direction of travel. This allows the driver to quickly and easily adjust his seating position to the corresponding loading direction at all times, even in tight construction sites.
Joystick operation and a digital display showing all important engine and machine data ensure simple and smooth operation and are always in the operator’s field of vision, even in reverse gear and with the seat direction adjusted.

Downfield GC choses Super 500 for all round excellence
The resourcefulness and positivity of Course Manager, John Watson, and his team of six, at the parkland course of Downfi eld GC, Dundee, saw them through a tough ‘stopstart’ winter.
“You can only worry about what you can control,” said John Watson, brushing aside that a relentless combination of ice and 12 weeks’ snow cover, played havoc with well laid plans for the first quarter of the year.
Fortunately, John Watson’s purchase of two machines from local dealer, Fairways GM at Kinross, last November, helped him make the best of any weather windows.
The fi rst was a Wiedenmann Super 500, 3-in-1 high dump, sweeper collector, which is famed for being able to keep working in frosty conditions.
“It’s been permanently attached to a hydrostatic tractor; it works a
treat on that, so smooth. Primarily, it was for leaves and then of course, rough management.
It picked huge amounts of leaves right away, and then a few storms meant we virtually had to start again. Leaves are vacuum packed nice and tightly. We high dump them into one of our 5 tonne cage sided trailers. We’ve taken photos of what it does and quite honestly, it’s so good, people think we’ve used Photoshop,” continued John.
The second machine is the Maredo MT200 Flex Verticutter, supplied via GroundPro to Fairways GM and indeed, to all Wiedenmann UK dealers.
The Maredo has three mechanically driven heads which follow contours individually and can give either a light groom or verticut, or a deep scarify, down to a maximum 25 mm, particularly appropriate to greens, tees and aprons.

To support the use of glyphosate in the amenity sector, Bayer has launched a new amenity specific ‘Glyphosate Hub’ to empower contractors by providing them with relevant information about this vital active ingredient.
Freddie Bendall-Brown, digital marketing specialist at Bayer Environmental Science, explains that after surveying amenity professionals last year, the company believed it
was important to help amenity professionals sort fact from fiction when it comes to glyphosate.
“It provides amenity contractors with the references and information they need to respond to queries from the public and colleagues alike,” he says.
“The hub also emphasises that there’s few alternative tools out there to control such a broad spectrum of weeds, especially with such a good safety profile
backed by years of research and scientific study. Something many people outside of the amenity sector are not aware of.”
The hub also provides glyphosate specific information on UK and EU regulations, best practice guidance and independent research and resources from organisations such as CRD, the glyphosate renewal group and DEFRA.
John Chambers, part of the landscaping supplies firm Green-tech, has launched an eagerly anticipated new wildflower mix.
The John Chambers
Professional Dual-Purpose mix
is a blend of native annual and perennial wildflower seeds and can be supplied with or without grass seed.
The mix is ideal where impact is required in the first growing season. The Cornfield Annual
The mix includes reliable species that are successful in most soil types and scenarios, so this mix is a great choice for those that do not know the exact constitution of their soil.
