Guide for councils to deliver a healthier future for plants and trees

APSE has launched a new report, outlining the various measures, resources, and strategies local authorities can employ to deal with biosecurity issues.

As UK local councils strive to plant more trees in response to Climate Change, alongside developing greener local parks and public realm, APSE, (Association for Public Service Excellence) wanted to explore the state of preparedness of local councils when it comes to biosecurity threats.

Biosecurity threats can come in many forms. Perhaps the most well-known threat, and one which local authority parks and woodlands services are already grappling with are diseases such as Dutch Elm Disease and Ash Dieback.

To support local councils APSE conducted a survey to ascertain the key diseases, pests and invasive non-native species that are most affecting local

authorities across the UK, as well as the levels of implementation of biosecurity measures, and the awareness of UK-wide biosecurity issues.

The survey found that just over one-third of respondents were aware of the UK Plant Biosecurity Strategy (2023-2028), which is a collaboration between DEFRA and the devolved administrations. Furthermore, just 10% of respondents had a specific biosecurity policy, although more encouragingly 58% said they considered biosecurity issues.

Mo Baines, APSE Chief Executive said: “Our member local councils face an array of challenges. Climate change and the ecological emergency declarations made by many UK councils have quite rightly led to a greater focus on the local environment, including treeplanting schemes, enhancements to green spaces and parks and the introduction of new plant species. These are clearly welcome

measures, but they must be done in a managed way with the right resources, including sufficient management and maintenance budgets.”

Baines added: “In addition to the rather stark findings of our survey work, this report opens a lens into the real threats of reducing parks and greenspace budgets. Dealing with biosecurity threats from tree and plant diseases and non-native invasive species will be essential if local councils and local communities are to reap the rewards of increasing tree cover and enhancing a greener public realm.”

Matt Ellis, APSE Principal Advisor for parks and greenspaces said: “Our latest report is a must-read for local parks professionals and should also be of grave concern to local councillors in setting their parks and public realm policies. Greater awareness of biosecurity measures and awareness of ways in which those threats

can be reduced should be at the fore of parks and public realm management and operations. I commend this report to them.” APSE will continue to support the work of DEFRA and the

Plant Biosecurity Strategy by raising awareness and practical measures with its member local councils.

Pro X series unveiled by EGO Power Plus

EGO Power Plus, is launching a new product range aimed at landscaping and groundscare professionals.

Designed to meet more heavyduty demands, the Pro X range features pioneering battery charging technology and six new tools including a mower, chainsaw, hedge trimmers and grass trimmers.

Chris Buck, Product Manager at EGO, said: “Our new Pro X range ensures heavy commercial contractors and local authority workers have the tools they need to tackle the toughest tasks. These applications require robust and powerful outdoor power equipment, combined with a trailblazing battery charging solution.”

Launching later this year is EGO’s new commercial charging system, giving professional groundscare, gardening and landscaping teams the power they need to do a full day’s work without running out of charge.

The PGX Professional Charging system is a flexible charging solution that scales to meet the specific needs of any business. The system is powered by the PGX1600E-H 1600W Charging Hub, which runs off any standard electrical outlet, meaning no electrical infrastructure upgrade is required.

A modular system, PGX allows for each user to adapt it to their specific power needs.

The PGX1600H Hub connects to any combination of up to

30 PGX3000D 3-Port Docks, or PGX1400PB Power Banks (available separately), to provide charging power to 90 battery ports. The system manages charging intelligently, meaning all batteries can be charged without the need for manual intervention. The charging power means that the PGX system can effectively charge up to 70 EGO 56V ARC Lithium batteries, or up to 250Ah of battery capacity overnight (in 12hrs).

“The Pro X range is specifically designed to stand up to the rigours of heavy-duty use,” added Chris Buck. “This means there is no longer any excuse to use petrol over battery power and the many benefits it brings.”

Welcome...

last month has seen environmental issues coming to the fore.

Earth Day was celebrated across the industry and a new guide has been released to help local authorities to improve biodiversity and boost the health of parks and green spaces in their communities.

The National Drought Group also met recently with a positive forecast for water resources this summer and throughout the rest of the year. The current water resource outlook means there is a low-risk that hosepipe bans will be needed this summer.

But, as Environment Agency Director of Water, Helen Wakeham, who chaired the meeting said: “While it is positive that water supplies are currently in a favourable place, every drop we can save will help ensure our supplies are resilient into the future. Even following wet weather, we cannot be complacent with this precious resource.”

The industry already has an outstanding record compared to other when it comes to environmental awareness and green credentials. Issues such as water management and conservation gave been central to the work of those within the industry. The willingness to adapt and implement more environmentally friendly policies and introduce greener products and services is well-established too.

At a time when some continue to question environmental issues, it is important that our industry continues to fly the flag for a greener way of working. This month we have our regular Professional Groundscare supplement, featuring Grass Cutting Machinery, Brushcutters and Battery Power. There are also special features on ATVs, UTVs & Work Trucks, as well as Workwear & PPE and our usual round-up of industry news, product launches and case studies. With preparations for a busy summer now well under way, we hope you have a busy and productive month.

National Drought Group meets after record wet October to March

The National Drought Group has reconvened to discuss ongoing preparation for future droughts, but confirmed water resources are healthy following England’s wettest October to March on record. The Environment Agency chaired its regular meeting of the group in which they discussed the ongoing challenge of managing future droughts as our climate changes.

The group - which includes the Met Office, government, water companies and conservation experts – noted no area is in drought and reservoir storage for England as a whole was 95% at the end of March. The current water resource outlook means there is a low-risk that hosepipe bans will be needed this summer.

The EA has instructed water companies to keep preparing for all rainfall scenarios and continue their work on demand management and leakage reduction. The public have also been urged to continue playing their part in protecting the environment by using water wisely.

Environment Agency Director of Water, Helen Wakeham, who

Current situation

The EA uses four stages to describe dry weather – prolonged dry weather, drought, severe drought and recovering drought.

• Devon and Cornwall only moved out of the last stage and into ‘normal’ status in early March.

• Reservoir storage for England as a whole was 95% at the end of March. Storage levels in the vast majority of reservoirs were classed as normal or above normal at the end of March.

• England has had its wettest 18 months (between October 2022 –March 2024) since Met Office records began in 1836. October 2023 to March 2024 is the wettest

chaired the meeting said: “While it is positive that water supplies are currently in a favourable place, every drop we can save will help ensure our supplies are resilient into the future. Even following wet weather, we cannot be complacent with this precious resource.

We all need to use water wisely, such as turning off taps when they are not needed or “installing water butts in our gardens. At the same time, the Environment Agency will continue to work with the water, agriculture, and environment sectors, to prepare for droughts, which can come unexpectedly as we found in 2022.”

The meeting heard how all sectors are preparing for the summer as well as how they will cope with future droughts. Defra and the EA are also supporting the agriculture sector to improve its water supply resilience in the short and longterm and ensuring growers’ needs are incorporated into regional water resources plans.

winter half year period across England since records began.

• Monthly mean river flows in March were predominantly notably or exceptionally high for the time of year across many parts of England, particularly across southern England. Nine sites had their highest March monthly mean flows on record.

• At the end of March, groundwater levels across England were classed as normal or higher across all aquifers. Levels were exceptionally high across many chalk aquifers with groundwater flood alerts and warnings in place across many parts of central southern England.

Power sharing agreement benefits industry

Battery powered machines are becoming an increasingly significant part of groundcare fleets, but the challenge of purchasing and charging multiple batteries for different brands has been a barrier for many. Electric tool specialist EGO Power Plus offers a solution – supplying several third party manufacturers with a battery solution that uses a common unit which can also be deployed on its own products. We spoke to Rudi Silkens, Business Development Manager for Powered by EGO, about this project.

What is Powered by EGO?

Rudi Silkens: Powered by EGO is a concept which allows manufacturers of outdoor power equipment and other machinery to electrify their products using EGO’s battery and motor technology. These manufacturers are able to supply battery-powered products without the expense and investment of developing their own battery system, relying on an already proven and well-established battery platform to power their equipment. EGO’s batteries are compatible with a variety of brands and products. Through Powered by EGO, manufacturers of specialist products can add a battery-powered range while the end user can enjoy the benefits of cross-compatibility with EGO’s existing tools.

How does it benefit manufacturers?

RS: For manufacturers who have traditionally made petrol-powered tools, electrifying their range can be a daunting task. It requires specialist knowledge, lengthy research time and, for most, is

financially unfeasible. Powered by EGO eliminates the need for manufacturers to develop their own battery system. By removing the need to develop their own battery platform, the time it takes to launch a battery-powered product to market is reduced significantly by using a well-established thirdparty platform. With the EGO system, their range is also futureproofed by EGO’s commitment to continuing to develop the platform and implement new solutions for a changing market.

Lastly, our batteries can be used interchangeably. Most garden tools are used seasonally, but the end user doesn’t want a battery for each tool and generally remains loyal to a specific battery brand throughout their career. By default, Powered by EGO means other manufacturers can effectively provide equipment as an indirect extension to the EGO range and, taking advantage of this platform loyalty and provide end users with a level of flexibility which would be unachievable if they were to develop technology of their own.

Who are you working with and are there plans to extend this to other manufacturers?

RS: We have partnered with several equipment manufacturers to take battery-powered tools to market including Allett Mowers, Tielburger, Vari, Eliet, Cobra and AS Motor. Our batteries have even been used by motorcycle manufacturers to develop hybrid scooters for the emergency services, helping them to reduce emissions while being able to achieve the speed they need to react quickly in

the event of an emergency. In terms of our future plans, we are very much open to providing power to other manufacturers.

How involved has EGO been in the design of the machines to work from battery power?

RS: The manufacturer of the tool remains responsible for the performance and the durability of the total unit; however, we will assist in making the whole system as efficient as possible. It is possible to program the motor so it has the best performance for each specific application.

Are there limits to the type of equipment that can be used with EGO batteries?

RS: The limit of our Powered by EGO motor is 3.5kW output power which is equivalent to a 160cc internal combustion engine.

Is it a common battery to the one that is used in EGO’s own equipment?

RS: Yes, we use common batteries for the Powered by EGO motors however all our battery types are suitable. It is important to note however, that the performance can be slightly less when using the smaller batteries, or only one battery.

To obtain the best performance, we recommend that manufacturers fit at least two of the 6Ah batteries. Given that the majority of Powered by EGO applications require more power, larger batteries are best. Having two batteries work together is called Peak Power

Technology™. With this feature, the electronics make sure that the two batteries and the tool are working together for maximum power and runtime.

What equipment is used for charging and has this been supplied by EGO or developed by the OEMs?

RS: We have a full range of charging equipment so that there is a combination or every battery. The line-up comprises: two standard chargers, two fast chargers and a charging box with six slots. Recently, we also introduced a commercial charging system to support heavy-duty use which gives users the flexibility of charging a large number of batteries whether it be charging overnight, fast charging or charging while out on a job.

How are Powered by EGO products supported?

RS: The EGO power units are sold exclusively to manufacturers who know about implementing motors and the regulations to bring a complete product to market. Because the manufacturer only can change motor settings, this responsibility sits with them. Thus, the supplier of the system takes care off the warranty and after-sales. Every nonEGO dealer can go to their supplier for warranty and after sales. We are continuously working on improving and fine-tuning the processes and are currently investigating a new concept for warranty and after sales for Powered by EGO.

New best-in-class for the UK

GftK vdw 400plus Color is new to the UK in 2024, but well established for more than 10 years in Germany, where it is regarded as the ‘Best-in-Class’, wet-slurry applied, cementbased, paving joint mortar.

The paving contractors and landscapers, say it is effectively ‘Tile Grouting Standing-up’, as the ergonomic application with squeegee, washboy and sponges is the same as for conventional cement-slurries, but the vdw400plus is much easier and faster to clean-off, leaving a surface finish more akin to handapplied external tile grouts.

NCC Streetscape have now carried out the first projects in

the UK with this material and contractor’s comments have been exactly the same, the GftK vdw 400plus Color is Easier, Cleaner & Faster – the ‘Best-in-Class’.

These first projects have been to grout granite and external porcelain tile paving. The application is very similar to other cement-based slurries, but it provides a more aesthetically pleasing, coloured, and smoother finish, very similar to hand trowel / sponge applied grouts, but critically the whole process of application through the final surface cleaning, is all done standing up.

Show gardens reduce their carbon footprint

For the first time in the history of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has introduced a Green Garden Audit which all gardens in the Show and Sanctuary categories this year have been through in order to reduce their carbon footprint and environmental impact.

Design changes implemented as a result of gardens going through the new audit process had a significant impact reducing carbon emissions across the two categories by 28%.

Nicholsons, the company commissioned by the RHS to carry out the audit alongside RHS Head of Sustainability

Malcolm Anderson reviewed the garden design and build plans in terms of a broad range of sustainability criteria including material selection, waste, biodiversity and ecology, water and air and then worked with the designers and contractors to make workable changes to their plans in order to reduce the environmental footprint of the gardens.

Malcolm Anderson, RHS Head of Sustainability said: “Last

year we added sustainability criteria at selection stage to ensure, where possible, that designers have thought about the environmental impact of their gardens at the design stage, the introduction of the audit this year helps us take this one step further, enabling us to better understand the carbon footprint of the gardens at the show and challenge designers and landscapers to consider ways they could further reduce their impact whilst also opening up the conversation within the horticultural industry on how we can create gardens more sustainability in the future.”

This year to recognise and celebrate the examples of excellence in progressive environmental ingenuity at the show, the RHS is introducing a new award ‘The Environmental Innovation Award’ open to all gardens who have been through the Green Garden Audit.

RHS Chelsea Flower Show runs from 21-25 May 2024 and tickets are available online at rhs.org.uk/chelsea

Pitch preparations begin at new Everton Stadium

Ground works have begun to prepare Everton Stadium for the construction of the playing surface.

Contractors arrived on site this week to begin underground works on the surrounds ahead of a summer of complex work to prepare a top-class pitch for a world class stadium.

And the first job is to dig out the piling mat; a layer of recycled stone initially rolled out on top of the compacted

sand over two years ago, to provide a solid surface for vehicles to work upon.

Ben Williams, Package Manager for Laing O’Rourke, who is overseeing the pitch development, explained: “It’s great now that SEL Environmental are on board and this is the initial phase of the works.

“They are going through and trimming the top layer of the piling mat and installing all of the pitchside ducting, which

gets everything ready for the maintenance and other services around the pitch, including all the cabling for the broadcasters, piping for the irrigation and undersoil heating and belowground drainage.”

One the piling mat has been stripped back to the original sand layer created from sea-dredged sand, the layers needed for the pitch will be built up, beginning with impermeable membranes that provide a barrier for the

top-level works. On top of this, a hot air system will be installed to manage the undersoil heating, layered beneath a drainage system that also allows for water storage for irrigation.

Atop that, heating pipes and a gravel layer will be installed, on which the lower and upper rootzone and grass will sit.

Williams added: “Once we dig down, we will be on the top of the sand layer and we want to try and keep that segregated from the rest of our system, so there are impermeable membranes to be put down, then the piping of the undersoil heating into the drainage system, making sure it is robust enough and avoiding damaging anything as we go along, because that can be costly to repair at a later stage.

“At the minute, we are just concentrating on the initial stages of those ducting and utility installations. SEL will then

return around July to install the root layers, all of the drainage and irrigation and build up the layers, and we’re hoping to start planting grass seed around August time.”

Once the seeding is complete in early October, specialised machinery will then stitch synthetic fibres into the roots of the grass to strengthen them and provide a robust Desso surface.

These fibres, covering around 5% of the playing surface, are designed to interlock with the growing grass to provide strength and longevity.

Williams explained: “It’s a hybrid system, so the ground will be seeded all the way around and then, around six weeks into that, synthetic fibres are stitched into it, so that gives the grass added stability to ensure it can give more playing time.”

Multi-million pound boost for grassroots cricket

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced investment of £35 million in grassroots cricket facilities and widening access to the sport within state schools, in the latest move by the Government to get one million more young people physically active by 2030.

It includes funding to also help extend England and Wales Cricket Board’s primary and secondary schools programme to get over 900,000 young people into playing cricket over next five years, including 80,000 children with special educational needs.

The investment, to be delivered over the next five years during which England and Wales will host the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, includes a major capital programme that will see 16 state-of-the-art all-weather cricket domes built outdoors within host cities across England.

These will allow for participation in cricket throughout the year, connecting school, community and talent programmes. Each dome will be built within diverse communities where figures have indicated low levels

of physical activity. It follows the first cricket dome opened by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in Bradford.

The Government’s investment will also deliver an extension to the ECB and Chance to Shine charity’s free, in-school cricket programme for every single school child in innercity locations within the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup host cities across England. This will have a particular emphasis on children from lower socioeconomic groups building on

existing investment from Sport England.

ECB Chair Richard Thompson said: “It’s our ambition that cricket becomes the most inclusive sport in the country and that starts by giving children the chance to play from an early age and from whatever background or community they come from. It is vital that cricket is available in as many state schools across England and Wales as possible, and across diverse communities.”

Windstorm scores highly at North Hants GC

At SALTEX 2023, on the STM Co Ltd stand, Sam Evans, the Course Manager at the prestigious North Hants Golf Club, and his Grounds team took particular interest in the SCAG Windstorm debris blower.

This is a stand-on zero-turn machine with a 37HP motor, 10mph ground speed and a colossal output of 600cfm.

They could see immediate advantages over their present system of a leaf blower unit

towed behind a utility vehicle, a system that means that two engines are required, one for the UV and the other for the blower.

The operator also struggles with restricted rearward view because of the blower size. There is also the general safety aspect with the operator needing to look behind regularly to check blower performance and suitable clearance.

The next step was to have an on-site demonstration; this was arranged with David Gray

of the STM Co area dealer Lister Wilder. The Windstorm performance on that demo went beyond expectations; clearly an immediate saving was there being only one motor in use, but the visibility and zero-turn manoeuvrability were real sellers once experienced by the operators on their regular grounds. Not only that but there was an additional benefit; the Windstorm has so much power it can cope with clearing leaves within heather areas, which has been very time consuming in the

past. Sam’s expression was “that stuff can be like Velcro”.

The general reaction and enthusiasm were such that Sam was easily able to persuade his General Manager, who was equally impressed with the demo, that this was money well spent.

So now the machine has completed its first winter debris season – but it doesn’t end there because routine mowing can leave grass cuttings on the surfaces. The North Hants greenkeeping team have always cleared this away to keep the fairways pristine, and now, with the Windstorm, they can do it in two-thirds the time it took them before. That, with general requirements for clearing wind

Overcoming Dollar Spot at Alderney GC with Origin Amenity Solutions

A stunning coastal golf course located on Alderney Island, the third largest of the Channel Islands, Alderney Golf Club is a haven for golf enthusiasts seeking both challenge and natural beauty.

In recent years, the club faced a persistent threat to its greens in the form of Dollar Spot, a fungal disease notorious for its detrimental impact on turf health and playing performance.

Dollar spot causes small tanned spots about the size of a Dollar coin (Dollar Spot!) around 2-5cm in diameter. It is spread through small bits of mycelium moving to a new plant host. They move in water and can also be spread on shoes, golf equipment, and turf management equipment. Spots can typically coalesce which can wipe out large areas of turf. At Alderney Golf Club, both Poa and Bent grasses contribute to the botanical sward composition. Unfortunately, Dollar Spot threatens both grass species

and their susceptibility to the disease necessitated a targeted management approach. Dollar Spot has plagued Alderney Golf Club for half a decade. Despite efforts to control it, the disease was historically initiated in June. In response to this challenge, Alderney Golf Club sought the expertise of Origin Amenity Solutions (OAS), a leading provider of turf management solutions. Working closely with OAS technical advisor Marcus Hewitt, the club devised a proactive strategy to combat Dollar Spot and rejuvenate its greens.

OAS recommended the implementation of Exteris Stressgard, a potent fungicide, applied in mid-May with a follow-up application two weeks later. This preemptive approach aims to suppress the Dollar Spot before it gains momentum.

Maintaining a healthy plant is extremely important when managing Dollar Spot so the

Manager Paul Flairclough focused on enhancing turf health.

A tailored regimen comprising Liquid N, Seaweed, and Elevate Fe, supported by a wetting agent programme featuring Tricure AD and Seaquest, strengthened the turf against disease while promoting vigour and resilience.

The results were remarkable. Paul comments ‘Since working with Marcus from OAS the course has been in immaculate condition.

Marcus’ support with Dollar Spot management has improved summer playing conditions on the greens and our membership and visitors have provided excellent feedback.’

As autumn approached, Dollar Spot pressure continued due to the high humidity. Dedicate fungicide was applied with Trimate in September keeping the greens Dollar Spot free and prepared for any Microdochium Patch outbreaks that would often

start in late September.

By partnering with Origin Amenity Solutions and embracing cutting-edge solutions, the club not only conquered Dollar Spot but also elevated the overall quality of its greens. Today, Alderney Golf Club continues to shine as a beacon of resilience and excellence, offering an unrivaled experience amidst the unspoilt terrain of the Channel Islands.

Paul concludes, “Exteris worked extremely well on our golf course and we had good control over Dollar Spot for the first time in five years on this site. Due to the Stressgard technology, the grass was healthy and looking amazing.”

Ventrac for Ladybank Golf Club

Ladybank Golf Club, situated in wooded heathland 10 miles west of St Andrews in Fife, is the latest prestigious Scottish golf club to purchase Ventrac equipment to assist in the maintenance of their challenging heathland championship course.

Grant Frogley is the Course Manager and is responsible for a team of 8 full-time greenkeepers, who maintain this beautiful and challenging course. The club have purchased a Ventrac 4500 all-terrain compact tractor and two attachments to help maintain the course.

“I’m one of the many converts to the Ventrac compact tractor and attachments,” he said. “We had two rough mowers when I came in, each one for different areas of the course. We’re a relatively flat site in terms of elevation, but we do have quite

a lot of subtle movement with some extreme hollows and bumps. The rough mowers weren’t the best at following contours, so we found ourselves doing a lot more hand work.

“I’d seen the Ventrac at a demonstration at Gwest and knew it would be the perfect piece of kit here; a versatile machine that could do more than one task. We got it in on demo and sure enough it flew round, coped with every contour out there, without a problem.

“We’ve got the Contour deck and the Tough Cut deck. We use the Tough deck a lot during the winter to clean up the woodlands and remove the gorse and broom. We basically cut everything that’s not on the maintained grass areas. We cut every blade of grass during the winter, so it’s very versatile and

mobile for getting in amongst the trees. As I said previously, it’s very good at removing brash, gorse and broom.

“It came with a rear three-point linkage kit, which is brilliant. We bought a small sprayer with hand lance that hooks up on the back of it and we also

Expansion with new tractor mowers from EGO

Following the ground-breaking success of EGO’s zero-turn ride-on mowers, leading batterypowered outdoor power equipment specialist, EGO Power Plus, is expanding its ride-on range with two new tractor mowers. The twin-blade tractor mowers utilise up to six EGO ARC Lithium 56V portable batteries, providing the same power and performance as the equivalent petrol machines.

Using EGO’s portable batteries enables the user to tailor the amount of capacity they use, giving them flexibility with run-time, cost, and usage in other EGO tools in the range. Vince Brauns, Group Product Director at EGO, said: “Following the success of our zero-turn Z6 range, we wanted to introduce more mowers to ensure we could deliver a product for every user’s needs. The new EGO ride-on tractors set the standard in battery-powered collection and side-discharge mowers. Users can now cut substantially sized lawns in comfort and with complete confidence in battery longevity.”

The new range includes the TR3800E-B 98cm ride-on collection tractor mower and the TR4200E 107cm ride-on side discharge version. Both come with powerful twin blades and pressed steel decks to ensure that the mowers combine power and performance with robust durability.

The mowers feature a front mounting that can house up to six EGO batteries and features the company’s Peak Power technology, enabling the machine to draw on the power from all batteries at

once. Both models come with the CHV1600E, a 1600W fast charger that fully charges six 10Ah EGO 56V ARC Lithium batteries in as little as three hours.

For improved operability there is an LCD control display centrally mounted on the dashboard, enabling quick and easy adjustments to both travel and blade speeds as well as providing real time data on battery capacity. A spring-assisted adjuster with 8 pre-sets provide cutting heights of 25mm to 100mm. In addition, Bluetooth connectivity enables the user to remotely monitor machine performance and ensure that batteries are charged and ready for cutting. Driver comfort includes an adjustable spring suspension seat and large, wide tyres which ensure both a smoother ride, added grip and better weight distribution to protect lawn integrity. LED headlights enable safe use in lowlight conditions while a front bumper helps protect the chassis from potential impact damage.

The TR3800E-B 98cm ride-on collection tractor mower has collection or mulch capabilities, with a substantial 300-litre collection box to maximise cutting times. Large handles make removing and replacing the box ergonomic and easy, while a single level makes emptying the collection box quick and simple. The TR4200E ride-on side discharge tractor mower offers even greater productivity when grass collection is not required. It can cover up to 2 acres on a single charge and has an enhanced 107cm cutting width.

EGO Power Plus Enquiry 50

Having designed the agria 9500 and 9600 radio- controlled hybrid grass and brush mowers eight years previously, Agria’s R&D team was hugely equipped for the challenge of developing the all-electric agria 9700e tool carrier.

Launched late last year in the UK, the name ‘tool carrier’ doesn’t really do it justice because it is a power unit which connects existing equipment up to 300 kg via standard three-point linkage, CAT 1.

The PTO drive is both variable and bi-directional giving operators full scope to maximise efficiency and work in tight spaces.

The 9700e is extraordinary because it reaches places totally off limits to an

equivalent 30 hp tractor. For a start it can work safely on slopes up to 50 , so high banking and difficult gradients suddenly become possible. This opens up a brandnew set of possibilities for landscapers, contractors, and those challenged with keeping amenity and residential areas groomed and healthy.

Instantly with a flail mower attachment, like a Muthing Flail, unkempt areas can be tamed; unsightly vegetation can be shredded into fragments for faster decomposition. But it doesn’t just mow.

Attachments can be swapped over to suit seasonality and the job in hand.

The unit can be used to attach blowers, rakes, seeders, spiker tools, snow ploughs, giving

it no end of usefulness across the calendar. Andy Kerr, lead demonstrator for both Wiedenmann UK and Agria UK said it is the focus Health & Safety that really attracts customers, closely followed by its ‘all electric’ credentials and variety of task.

Each full charge of the lithiumion battery gives five hours of machine time in flail mode.

An optional fast charger is available that charges the battery from 15% to 100% in just one hour.

Stepless and brushless- electric drive means the process is incredibly quiet and can work in low noise areas so outside schools and residential areas.

Putting on a good show

The Devon County Showground uses a Major 6m Swift to keep it’s 150 acres in pristine condition.

At Westpoint, the Devon County Showground, near Exeter, Devon the show-ground facility is holding an event or show virtually every weekend and often during the week. The site is based on 160 acres, of which 150 acres are grassland, used for outdoor events and car parking. The Devon County Show alone attracts in excess of 90,000 visitors every year and so that places a big challenge on the organisers and maintenance team.

On average, the grass-cutting cycle happens once a week and covers 150 acres, but there

are times when the weather is warm and there’s been plenty of rain, the grass growth can mean cutting is required more frequently so a high-output mower is an essential part of the armoury. Previously, the team used a small 8ft topper which would seemingly take forever, but now with a 6m wide trailed rotary topper, they can cover the entire grounds and car parks in just two days or less.

Being a six-metre cutting width and having front and rear-rollers, the Major 600T, can cover the ground quickly, regardless of grass type and can be adjusted simply for height of cut and degree of mulching. Another big plus is that is driven through a

direct gearbox and doesn’t use a belt drive, which further enhances durability and serviceability.

The Major MJ71-600T is a six metre machine but also comes in a choice of cutting widths. It’s built using high quality materials such as Strenx ™ 700 highstrength steel which is stronger, yet much lighter than steel used in ordinary mowers. Likewise it has a fully galvanised finish, which means it resists rusting of components and enhances the durability and reliability of the machine, so extending working life and giving a much greater return on the investment.

The investment has been on the cards for the last 18 months, which gave Chris and his team of five ample time to compare and contrast the options available. “We’d been using two INFINICUT fixed head cylinders and were always happy with those – they’re reliable and comfortable to use, with minimal

noise and vibrations. We found nothing that could better those.

“On the rotary front, we demonstrated various models and were impressed with the performance and finish of the SM34’s, the ease of height adjustment compared to competitor machines and the side placement of the grass bucket which means it’s not hitting your legs all the time. The Bluetooth control is a great feature. We can quickly and easily set reel speed, clip rates and more, and share settings between machines to give us greater consistency than we’ve ever achieved before.”

In addition to the cylinder and rotary mowers, the club also purchased a pair of ThatchMaster cassettes from the TMSystem.

Dennis ES-34Rs are perfect for FAW

Head Groundsperson James Mathewson has praised his fleet of Dennis ES-34R battery powered rotary mowers for making a difference at Colliers Park National Football Development Centre.

The centre, situated on the historic site of Gresford Colliery in Wrexham, stands as a testament to the Football Association of Wales’ (FAW) commitment to fostering football talent. The facilities boast state-of-the-art training grounds making it a pivotal hub for football development.

At the helm of the grounds team is James Mathewson. His journey in the industry began at the Honourable Artillery Company in London, followed by stints at West Ham United FC and Arsenal FC’s training ground in London Colney. Post-Covid, James served as the Deputy Head Groundsperson at Northampton Saints before seizing the opportunity at Colliers Park.

In his first Head Groundsperson position, James is thriving and

overseeing recent acquisitions of pitch maintenance equipment with a significant shift from petrol to battery-powered machinery.

James praises the Dennis ES-34R electric rotary mowers for their role in this transition.

“The FAW has a drive towards sustainability and is very passionate about it. From a practical point of view, the ability to use the Dennis ES-34R’s on one pitch while the other pitch is in use just makes our day so much easier,” says James.

This is because the rural setting of Colliers Park presents unique challenges, including noise restrictions due to the close proximity of a hotel. James emphasises, “Having silent electric machinery, means we can cut pitches before early training sessions – it opens up our days a lot.

“There has probably been a bit of resistance over electric equipment, and I was quite sceptical when they first came out,” continues James.

“Until you use it, it is very easy to think like that because everyone is

so used to using petrol mowers –but the Dennis E-Series mowers are incredible machines.”

The ES-34R is a 34” (860mm) battery powered twin blade rotary mower using the latest lithium-ion battery technology. It is ideal for fine turf mowing and cleaning up operations in stadia and training facilities. Utilising the contra rotating hardened steel blades and low chute ensures maximum collection performance.

While allowing ground staff to achieve an aesthetically pleasing appearance and desired playing surface, the E-Series range will also help meet sustainability and environmental initiatives, minimise carbon footprint, emissions, running costs, HAV’s and noise without any range anxiety.

“We purchased three Dennis ES34R electric rotary mowers. I didn’t really look at other rotary mowers on the market,” explains James. “Predominantly they are

used to clean the pitches after training sessions. We also use them for the first few cuts after renovation before we put the cylinder mowers on.

“They put a nice stripe in the pitch which coaches and players like to see and they hoover up all the debris because they have fantastic suction.

“The best feature on these mowers is the option to increase the speed

of the blade in wet weather to suck the debris up – which they do just as well as when it is dry. The size of the machine is another big plus because you can get a pitch completed with three of us in about 45 minutes on average. This would have taken three of us three hours with our previous rotary mowers.”

James also dispels concerns about battery life, stating confidently, “We can do a whole pitch on one battery. They do this with ease and

In

Colliers Park National Football Development Centre have embraced the Dennis ES34R electric rotary mowers. The shift to sustainability, coupled with the machines’ efficiency and adaptability, reflects a forward-thinking approach in sports turf management.

The Progressive choice for consistent cutting

Designing and manufacturing innovative mowing solutions for over 30 years, the Progressive range encapsulates trailed and mounted models to suit all fine turf and sports turf situations. Available exclusively from Vanmac UK, of particular note is the ProFlex 120 and Progressive TDR-X – offering unrivalled cut consistency and contour-following ability.

The TDR-X offers a 3.2m working width, made up of three independently floating decks. The cutting height range of 10mm to 85mm is easy to adjust, with Progressive’s industry-leading

rotary blade overlap ensuring a precise and high quality of cut. Full width rollers on both the front and rear of each deck completes the specification, leaving a professional finish for both golf and sports surfaces. Along with other machines in the Progressive range, the TDR-X features Pro Lift-NTurn™ technology, which enables the operator to temporarily lift the decks with the PTO still engaged, increasing overall productivity.

Robust and reliable, the TDR-X sits in the portfolio of ‘finishing mowers’ alongside the ProFlex 120 – the most widely used trailed

contour mower. A uniform cut is delivered by the five floating mower decks, covering an area of 3.0m in a single pass and evenly dispersing clippings. The operator can quickly and easily set the HOC of each individual deck, improving versatility and making the ProFlex the perfect choice for stepped or transition cutting. It is also designed with routine servicing in mind –meaning less time in the workshop and more time in the field.

The ProFlex has proven itself to deliver an impressive return on investment, offering a cost effective alternative to other solutions for

the management of roughs, or for mowing applications undertaken by local authorities.

While a multi-deck mower may not be required in every situation, it can offer a broader scope of use with its ability to accommodate both flat and undulating turf equally. This flexibility delivers a quality cut without the risk of scalping or shredding the plant, helping to retain plant health and reducing potential entry points for pathogens and turf diseases to take hold.

Brushcutting on banks is easy with Ventrac

The Tough Cut deck attachment for the Ventrac 4520 all-terrain compact tractor has been specifically designed for mowing high grass, thick weeds and heavy brush.

Able to work on slopes of up to 30 degrees, it can save huge amounts of man-hours when compared to strimming. A large front opening directs material into the deck where three heavyduty blades counter rotate to cut and deposit waste evenly without windrowing. The blades are sharp on both sides so they can be used on right or left-hand spindles, allowing for extended blade life.

Capable of tackling saplings up to 2.54 mm (1 inch) in diameter, the Tough Cut makes short work out of overgrown thickets. It has three cutting heights: 76 mm, 92 mm and 108 mm. Easy servicing of belts and pulleys is provided by the hinged and removable cover, while the flip-up deck provides easy access for cleaning and changing blades.

Chris Houfe, Chairman of Greens at Stamford Golf Club says: “Obviously we want members and visitors to enjoy their experience with us and we are currently improving the playability of the course, by

removing larger areas of growth that have encroached onto the fairways over time,” he said.

“That’s why we purchased the Tough Cut deck; it does a fantastic job of knocking down brambles, young saplings, gorse and long grass, saving hours of brush-cutting for our small team.

Once this has been removed, we can create more rough and semirough areas, making it easier to find wayward balls and speed up play, in general.

The loader market turns electric

The electrification of the nonroad machinery market starts most strongly in the compact machine sector.

Finnish loader manufacturer Avant Tecno Oy responds to the change by taking another significant step as a pioneer in the loader world.

The new third-generation fully electric Avant loaders have batteries that are manufactured at Avant Power’s new battery factory in Ylöjärvi, Finland. Full investments have been made to develop the unique battery technology. “In five years, half of the loaders we sell may be electric,” says Jani Käkelä, CEO of Avant Tecno and Avant Power.

The compact machine market has been growing rapidly in recent years, especially in developed countries. Problems with the availability of labour and constantly tightening occupational safety regulations create more demand, to which multi-purpose compact loaders respond well.

Compact loaders can be used to work efficiently all year round, and their versatility is enhanced by a wide range of attachments. Another megatrend related to compact machines is zero emissions, which is becoming more and more prominent.

This is due to the pressure created by general national and international emission targets to reduce coal use. In addition, small machines are often used partly or entirely indoors, and the work is naturally bestdone emission-free for health reasons alone.

Avant Tecno has been developing electric loaders for four decades, and the company is now responding to the change with a huge development step.

Avant Power, the newest subsidiary of the Avant Group, designs and manufactures batteries optimized for Avant compact loaders at the Avant factory site in Ylöjärvi, Finland. The new third-generation electric loaders have just entered

production, and their lithiumion batteries are the best on the compact loader market.

“Our own battery production gives us a unique head start in the electric loader market now and in the future. According to the fastest scenario, up to half of the loaders we sell could be electric in as little as five years. However, diesel loaders will still be needed for a long time, as some market areas will switch to electric loaders on a much slower schedule,” says Jani Käkelä, CEO of Avant Tecno and Avant Power.

The fully electric loaders from Avant’s renewed e series – the Avant e513 (battery capacity 13 kWh) and Avant e527 (battery capacity 27 kWh) – are now in production. The domestic delivery time is about 10 weeks from the order. In export countries, the delivery time varies from country to country. More detailed information on delivery times is provided by importers.

Making the switch from petrol to battery-powered tools

In an increasingly environmentally conscious world, we’re seeing more landscaping teams transitioning from petrol to battery-powered tools.

Thanks to the continuous advancements in battery technology, professionals can be assured that switching to battery-operated machines does not mean less power and reduced productivity.

Here, STIHL UK discuss why now is the right time to make the transition and how best to make the switch.

What to look for in a battery?

For years, petrol tools have been the go-to for landscaping maintenance tasks, given their high-power performance. However, advancements in battery technology mean that battery-operated tools can now offer a comparable output, with features that offer better efficiency to boot.

It is important to note here that not all batteries are made equally. Landscapers are advised to look at enlisting professional grade, high-quality lithium-ion batteries, such as those in STIHL’s AP System, in order to get the most out of their tools.

For example, STIHL’s smart AP technology offers batteries with bi-directional communication, allowing tools to draw the optimum level of power for the device to achieve the best performance and working times.

In addition, STIHL batteries experience no loss of power as the battery discharges, thanks to the constant power output feature compensating

for changing voltages. For extended ease of use, STIHL tools are also designed so the battery fits inside the machine for elite balance, handling and protection.

It is also essential that batteries are reliable in all weather conditions. Therefore, IPX4 certified batteries are recommended, as are batteries that can operate in cold temperatures. This minimises downtime opposed to batteries that need to warm up to operate.

Additionally, batteries with connectivity integration, like the STIHL Connected system, offer further advantages, allowing the user to monitor charge cycles, energy consumption and overall battery health from their desktop.

Where to start?

For professional landscapers, hedge trimmers like the HSA 100 and HSA 130 are a great place to start when transitioning to battery-powered tools, given that they often offer the longest working times of all the landscaping tools available.

Battery hedge trimmers can now

rival the power output of petrol machines and are often lighter too, meaning they are easy to handle over long periods. In addition, the use of batteryoperated hedge trimmers means that no exhaust fumes can accumulate in the hedge close to the operator, which can be the case with petrol models.

While a transition to batterypowered tools has many advantages, for team members accustomed to using petrolpowered tools, it is a good idea to allow them to trial new equipment initially before committing to a full new fleet of machinery.

With technology advancements helping to boost batterypowered tools to the same level as petrol, now is a great time to be making the switch and enjoying the advantages that battery systems can offer.

However, while this switch can promise increased productivity, it is essential to ensure that the batteries and machinery enlisted are of the highest quality in order to do so.

Stationary electric driven Bio chopper-mixers

The Seko static Bio Chopper Mixer series, equipped with the most advanced technology with slow rotating augers and chopping blades, are particularly suited to industrial sites & production plants that are set up as a production line.

These machines are usually in a fixed position that allows ease of loading and the products removal to be processed further down the line.

The units are supplied with an electric control panel operating a three phase electric motor fixed onto the drive gearbox. This gives both a clean power environment and a quieter operation. This allows for installation’s into covered area’s and work buildings without causing distress to any operators in the area.

James Llewellyn, Sales Director, said: “This arrangement suits both large and small operators in confined and covered areas without compromising the end results.” This process allows most

organic material to be chopped and mixed, if required, resulting in both volume reduction for waste disposal or the production of an end result that can be used in other areas, animal feed, compost etc.

With their excellent performance these machines are ideally suited in bio-gas plants, where organic waste and manure are transformed into energy. Machines can be ordered in

different capacities ranging from 5cuM up to 33cuM. These can be fitted with various lengths of discharge conveyer systems, rubber or chain, to suit the customers requirements.

Harry West (Prees) Ltd are sole importer’s for the Seko products for both the UK & ROI.

Verti-Quake and Verti-Drain combo helps Wrekin GC

Like many, the team at Wrekin Golf Club have recorded extraordinary levels of rainfall over the winter of 2023/24.

And yet, Course Manager Gary Turner explains that they’ve emerged with free-draining fairways, which he attributes to a single pass with their Redexim Verti-Quake.

The timely purchase in the autumn has now been followed

up by the delivery of a Redexim Verti-Drain 1517 to further improve aeration results and enhance drainage in other areas of the course.

The 1517 from the awardwinning Redexim range offers a lightweight aeration solution with a 1.7m working width and 6” working depth – a combination that makes it a popular choice for sensitive turf areas. It’s larger size and faster operating speed

compared to Gary’s previous aerator presents more effective results, in less time.

Gary said: “We plan to follow the monthly verti-draining with applications of dressing, which will bring multiple benefits to the profile and help us manage the challenges posed by mother nature.”

One Kubota Tractor extends to full partnership deal

What began as one Kubota tractor at one football complex in Eastleigh is blossoming into a prolific partnership between dealers Rod Gaskin Ltd and Hampshire FA (HFA).

In his day job as HFA Facility Operations Manager, Pete Hussey puts their Kubota L2501 to task maintaining the five natural pitches at the Stoneham Lane Complex. This positive first-hand experience puts Pete in good stead when in his other guise - conducting Pitch Power surveys to provide valuable advice and machinery recommendations

to benefit hundreds of grassroots facilities in the county.

The facility purchased a 50hp Kubota L2501 with full cab and a range of additional features including cruise control and air conditioning for optimal operator comfort. “Most of the jobs we do will take a number of hours to complete so it was very important for us not just to find a tractor powerful and durable enough to use with a wide range of implements, but that would also make for a positive allround experience for the driver.”

“In addition, we have enjoyed outstanding reliability with this tractor which is testament to the Kubota build quality and the regular servicing and maintenance conducted by the team at Rod Gaskin.”

With the successes of this partnership bearing fruit for both parties, the tie-up became official in September 2023 with Rod Gaskin Ltd announced as Hampshire FA’s official supplier of grounds machinery.

MICHELIN X Tweel eliminates punctures

Millstream Estate Services has turned to the airless MICHELIN X Tweel Turf to eliminate a growing number of punctures across its grass cutting fleet.

The Milton Keynes-based business now has the tyre and wheel combination running on five of its six Kubota ZD 1211 zero-turn mowers, with plans to upgrade the remaining machine in the near future.

Having regularly suffered up to three punctures a week during its operations for West Bletchley and Stony Stratford Town Councils, Millstream Director Neil Keenan equipped

three of his mowers with the MICHELIN X Tweel fitments during 2023.

He was so impressed with the results that he has since specified two new Kubota machines with the airlesstechnology tyres.

The MICHELIN X Tweel performs like a pneumatic tyre, but without the risk and downtime associated with punctures and impact damage.

It is one single unit, replacing the whole tyre and wheel assembly.

The tread is optimised for long wear life and offers high impact resistance. Its flexible poly-resin spokes carry weight in tension and absorb impacts, helping make the ride smoother, and provide an energy transfer that reduces tyre bounce.

The shear beam and spokes are designed to be flexible and deformable, which allows them to conform to the contours of the ground and provide excellent traction, grip and stability.

Scientific proof for considerable water saving

Together with their US partners, Aqua Aid Europe continues to set new standards in the turfgrass and horticulture industry by being the first company to have peer-reviewed research published, affirming a proven water saving of over 35% using new patented technology in any type of growing media.

This study verifies the initial research to quantify a reduction in irrigation water use and irrigation frequency with turfgrass treated with patented soil surfactant technology. This peer-reviewed

Penn State University research study is published in the Journal of Environmental HorticultureMarch 2024.

The research was conducted on a clay loam rootzone to measure if irrigation inputs could be reduced on mineral soils that are common on all types of turf management systems. Penn State University research study showed that creeping bentgrass plots treated with PBS150 or OARS HS resulted in a range of 36.5 to 39.4% reduction in irrigation water consumption over a 63day dry-down period versus plots

only treated with irrigation water. Turfgrass plots that were treated with 3 applications of PBS150 and OARS HS prior to the 63-day drydown period required a significantly lower number of irrigation events (13-14 times) versus untreated plots that only received irrigation with no soil surfactant (24 – 43 times).

For over 35 years, Aqua Aid has developed technology to improve the playing quality of turf grass grounds in various sports such as golf, rugby and football.

Lawn Association begins training at University of Oxford

The Lawn Association have started their training sessions at the University of Oxford.

This collaborative endeavour between the association and the university signifies a collective dedication to fostering a culture of innovation and sustainability in lawn care practices.

The subjects that will be covered in the training sessions highlight the importance of using native grass species, which the Lawn Association team have always promoted as one of the most sustainable and successful choices you can make for lawns in the UK.

Nutrition for the lawn, and how this can be achieved without the need for polymercoated synthetic fertilisers will also always be high on the agenda. Weed control, mowing and water management will be just some of the other topics covered.

Both institutions are leading the way in adopting environmentally responsible measures that benefit the environment and enhance the beauty and durability of green landscapes.
