Climate change poses ‘serious threat’ to sport and physical activity Climate change is already negatively impacting levels of physical activity in Britain and without significant action, it will severely worsen sporting inequality, the chair of Sport England Chris Boardman has said. Speaking at the Blue Earth Summit, he highlighted Sport England analysis and data which shows: •
•
During the heavy rainfall of November 2022, the percentage of children and young people stating that weather had stopped their physical activity in the past seven days increased by almost 40%. In the heatwave of July 2022, one in seven adults reported the weather was unsuitable for activity; more than a quarter of children reported this too.
He also highlighted support for the new commitment
in the Government’s Get Active strategy, that states the government will work with us to ‘embed environmental sustainability as a pillar of funding agreements.’ The chairman also committed to working in partnership with the sector on when and how this is done, and to discuss it carefully in the weeks ahead.
how we move forward but move forward we must. Some sports are already leading the charge and they will help others tackle what is the most complex and important challenge we have ever faced. “This isn’t easy but climate change doesn’t care. The status quo can’t be an option. We will
tackle this seriously, quickly and most importantly, together.” Sport England has backed research which shows that if global temperatures increase by more than 1.5C above preindustrial levels, we risk seeing irreversible impacts, with deprived communities the most effected and the effects on sport
and physical activity being profound. For example, 50% of past venues of the Winter Olympics wouldn’t be able to hold them again, and 23 out of 92 – or a quarter of English Football League grounds – can expect temporary or permanent flooding by 2050. Sport England

Sport England is to publish its own sustainability roadmap in the coming months. “Climate change is an existential threat to the planet and sport is intrinsically wrapped up in that,” he told the summit. “It is a serious threat to the physical activity sector, and by extension, the health and happiness sport and activity bring to millions of people in England every day. HTA urges action and clarity from Government Speaking at ‘Horticulture, The Conference 2023’, the Horticultural Trades Association’s (HTA) Chief Executive, Fran Barnes, made a strong call to action to politicians and policymakers to deliver supportive measures or risk the sector that will deliver on net-zero.
our health and wellbeing. We know that many sectors claim to be special, to deliver for the country in a unique way. But there are very few – if any – which can match the economic numbers with the environmental benefits and the social value of environmental horticulture.
Environmental horticulture is an unparalleled industry in its ability to deliver economically, environmentally, and socially, and its strengths, such as innovation and resilience, must be celebrated.
“We deliver £28 billion to the British economy. We support 674 thousand jobs, and we give 6 billion pounds in tax revenues. But moving from these hard facts, imagine a world with no horticulture. What a dismal place it would be – dismal to look at, dismal to live in and dismal for the environment.”
Fran Barnes said: “Horticulture matters. It’s important to the economy; it delivers for the environment, and, as we’ve seen only too recently, it’s vital for

NOVEMBER 2023
Welcome... As we move into November and the unpredictable weather continues to create challenges for the industry, there is a sobering warning from Sport England’s chairman Chris Boardman. He used the recent Blue Earth Summit to warn that climate change is already negatively impacting levels of physical activity and sport in Britain and significant action is needed now to address the problems. The issue of climate change is a sensitive one for some, but many in the industry see the impact of changing weather patterns, extreme conditions and disruption of the traditional seasons on a daily basis in their work. Other industry bodies and individual companies are already looking at such issues, with sustainability and the environmental impact of the industry at the forefront of many current initiatives. Arguably, the Government’s scaling back of key environmental policies and programmes has come at a crucial time and the decision has met with concern and confusion Such concerns will also feature at this year’s SALTEX, within the seminar programme and in conversations on the exhibition floor as the industry once more gathers at NEC Birmingham for two days. It will be interesting to gauge opinion from those within the industry as regards Chris Boardman’s warning and the current route of Government policy towards the environment. This month we have our regular Professional Groundscare supplement with a range of different features, from Natural Turf Management to Linemarking, Handheld Tools to Fertilisers. Elsewhere, we also look at Grass Seeds & Wildflowers, the urban environment and other industry news and product launches. The TSP Media team will be exhibiting at SALTEX 2023 too – complete with our usual free mini footballs to give away – and we hope to see you in Birmingham.

GroundsFest arrives in style After months of anticipation, GroundsFest 2023 lived up to the hype and celebrated a very memorable debut event with the groundscare community. The atmosphere was electric as GroundsFest united every corner of the industry and brought together 6,511 unique visitors (excluding exhibitors) across the two days. It was apparent among exhibitors and visitors that this new event was exactly what the industry needed. The mix of indoor halls and outdoor areas certainly seemed to strike a chord with visitors. Inside, the vibrant show floor provided attendees with a great mix of exhibitors showcasing a wide range of products and services, while five seminar theatres offered a feast of free education. The Landscape Zone, an entire hall dedicated to those involved in the planning, design, and construction of outdoor environments in the landscaping sector, also proved to be a welcome addition. The practical demonstrations from Grounds Training were a big hit with attendees. During the two days large groups gathered round experienced instructors to learn more about pedestrian mowers, ride-on mowers, handheld machinery, and the
calibration and use of knapsack sprayers and boom sprayers. Furthermore, the instructors were on hand in a large outdoor area to show visitors how to mark out a running track and speak about the essential elements of line marking sport pitches. In the outdoor areas hundreds of exhibitors were proudly showing off their products with many new innovations being unveiled for the first ever time ahead of the 2024 season. Not only was there plenty to see on the stands but the outdoor areas provided visitors with the perfect opportunity to see a wide range of machinery and to participate in live demonstrations. On the evening of the first day, exhibitors and visitors came together to enjoy the festival aspect of the event. With a range of food stalls, and live entertainment headlined by a very popular Queen tribute band, it was the perfect way to conclude a very special first day at GroundsFest.
be an event for everyone and to be able to establish a real sense of community. Over the two days we’ve had sunshine, we’ve had rain showers, but more importantly we’ve had collaboration, built relationships, witnessed innovation at its finest and ultimately come together to celebrate the industry and have a great time with one another. “The positive feedback has been overwhelming but we’re certainly not resting on our laurels. “We’re already planning how we can improve the event for 2024 by listening to every single piece of feedback and by analysing both the exhibitor and visitor surveys. We’ll certainly be back with GroundsFest chapter two in September 2024 and we cannot wait to welcome you all again.” GroundsFest Enquiry 6
Commenting on the first ever GroundsFest, Event Director Christopher Bassett, said: “On behalf of all of us at GroundsFest we really want to extend our gratitude to all our exhibitors, partners and visitors that have showed their support for the first event. VMS keep on track with GreenMech fleet One of the country’s leading de-vegetation contractors have explained why woodchippers from GreenMech are their go-to choice for safety and versatility in rail, waterway and commercial clearances. Currently running a mixture of EVO 205D SURE-Trak and 19-28 SAFE-Trak models, the team at VMS have not only been impressed with performance but the technical guidance and back-up support too, claiming their experience to date has been second to none. “From the start, the GreenMech’s with their industry-leading
SAFE-Trak platform set us up on the right track for embankment working and tasks in remote locations where other brands and towed models simply weren’t up to task,” explains Business Support Manager for VMS, James Harris. As their reputation and customer book continued to grow, VMS have not only expanded their depots and ground team, but also their fleet of GreenMech’s – now utilising four SAFE-Trak 19-28’s and more recently adding three new EVO 205D SURE-Trak’s to their day to day operations. MAKES AERATING EFFORTLESS “
The IQ dual-clutch F24/R24 gear box was chosen as it makes manoeuvring the tractor around the course whilst operating the equipment so easy. Another feature we really like is the Auto PTO function or the Headland Management System, it is brilliant for when we get to the end of the run with the aerator, we can lift the implement up, the PTO automatically cuts out, we can turn around then lower again and PTO restarts by itself. Brilliant for safety and avoiding damage or excess wear and tear on the implements themselves.”

ESTC publishes industry guide for synthetic turf recycling facilities
In response to an increasing need to dispose of end-of-life synthetic turf in an environmentallysensitive way, ESTC (the EMEA Synthetic Turf Council) has launched a new guide to recycling facilities across Europe.
The launch of the guide follows over €55 million of investment from ESTC members in new responsible waste management facilities over the last 10 years. Recognising these developments, ESTC has produced the guide: Recycling Facilities for Synthetic Turf Systems in Europe, for interested parties to easily identify and access services. The document showcases the locations of 10 recycling facilities across Europe, including one in the UK, as well as the specific features they offer, which include mobile recycling, on-site
separation and the recycling of infill, as well as the recycling of end-of-life synthetic turf.
Collectively, the Europe-wide network of recycling facilities boasts over 4.3 million m2 of processing capacity, which is equivalent to 500,000 full size football pitches. Furthering its commitment to conscious end of life care, ESTC has also created a supporting guidance document. It highlights current options and best practice and gives an overview on the legal obligations that need to be considered before a surface is disposed of. ESTC’s document references the EU Waste Framework Directive’s Waste Hierarchy – which aims to ensure that the management of waste is undertaken in the most responsible and sustainable way possible. The hierarchy dictates that recycling is the best option.
Stefan Diderich, Director General at the EMEA Synthetic Turf Council (ESTC) said: “The increase in specialty recycling services across Europe signifies a positive development in sustainability efforts within the industry.
This guide is intended to be a valuable resource for members and industry stakeholders. We therefore encourage the industry to share this document with customers, suppliers and other interested parties. “Maximising the service life of turf and preserving quality as far as possible is key, but there will come a point when the surface is no longer fit for purpose and needs replacing. That’s when you’ll need to consider options for end-of-life disposal.” ESTC Enquiry 9

UltraScape bridges the gap in Guildford
Green Lawnger TR for seasonal growth transitions Green Lawnger TR fro BASF is a high concentrate dark green pigment for pre-dormant and dormant turf that is recommended for use on golf courses, commercial and residential lawns to improve turf quality in winter and early spring. It can also be used as an affordable alternative to the winter overseeding of warm season grasses. The mix of black and green pigments in Green Lawnger TR allows increased absorption of solar radiation to the applied surface, increasing surface temperatures. This effect can help turf grass managers extend the playing season in transitional periods in the autumn and winter, and it can also speed up ice and snow thawing and accelerate spring growth later in the season, allowing early play and improved turf quality in the spring. When used as part of a winter conditioning programme, Green Lawnger TR is an effective tool to limit the development of winter injury symptoms, that can result from direct low temperatures such as ice cover (suffocation), crown hydration, desiccation
and/or low temperature diseases (snow moulds), while promoting rapid and uniform green-up. Green Lawnger TR creates a uniform dark green sward during the winter months, which lasts for up to four weeks, thanks to its ColorLock resin technology that ensures strong leaf adhesion and provides resistance to undesirable colour shifts. Its easy-to-spray formulation makes it easy to integrate into existing maintenance regimes, and can be used alone or in combination with plant protection products with no negative effect on seed germination.
UltraScape are delighted to have partnered with Arcadis, sustainable design experts, for the redesign of Walnut Bridge in Guildford. Arcadis contacted UltraScape to find out more about their BS 7533 compliant Mortar Paving System. After careful research and consideration, Arcadis knew the best, and most cost-effective solution, was to create a completely solid structure using UltraScape eco-bed bedding mortar, in conjunction with pro-prime slurry primer and flowpoint flowable grout.

A Carnival of colour at golf club Agrovista Amenity’s The green, green grass of Chipping Sodbury Golf Club in Bristol is now complimented with a carnival of colours including reds, pinks and purples thanks to the introduction of wildflower seed from DLF. The project is now into its third year and was the brainchild of Deputy Head Greenkeeper Craig Swindells who, together with support from the membership, has successfully introduced 800sq.M of outstanding visual impact together with all-
important food and habitat for pollinators and wildlife. The first seed went into the ground in May 2021 – a combination of Pro Flora 8, comprising of 80% grasses and 20% robust wild flowering species, and Colour Boost 1 (Carnival) for hightimpact annuals. Now, the club is going into year three and is overseeding again, this time with Colour Boost’s Biodiversity mix to introduce a wide range of flowering varieties.
Biodiversity from DLF’s Colour Boost collection blends seasonal annuals, biennials and perennials to appeal to a host of varied fauna, including pollinating insects. The composition of species is wide and ensures suitability to different growing conditions and strong colour, which changes depending on bloom, throughout the season. DLF Seeds Enquiry 29

Council brightens up roadside with Euroflor
West Lancashire Council wanted to brighten up the area for their residents with some instant colour and provide pollinators with natural habitat, they decided to trial Euroflor flower seed from Origin Amenity Solutions (OAS) on one of their major routes into the town of Skelmersdale. The council commissioned OAS to complete the trial project on their behalf which they did working alongside one of their trusted contractor partners. For speed, ease and fast results Flora Fleece was used - a weed suppressant made from recycled fabric composed of 50% jute, 25% cotton, 25% brown wool, with a hessian scrim. The matting is made of natural fibres, which will break down through the growing season in 5-8 months. On 10th May 2023 the team laid the fleece on both sides of the roundabout. Four tonnes of Green-tree topsoil were delivered by OAS and spread evenly on top of the Flora Fleece,
in preparation for seeding. This is a an environmentally friendly sustainable soil that is manufactured using organic compost and overburdened sand from quarries; products that would otherwise end up in landfill. A total of 400gram of Euroflor Rainbow Annuals were sown onto the topsoil and then raked over. A firm favourite because of its rapid establishment and long flowering period starting 50-60 days after sowing right through to the first frosts. Euroflor Rainbow displays a wide range of colours from early season - Eschscholtzias and Iberis, to mid-season Poppies, Cornflowers and Flax, giving way to Marigolds and Cosmos at the end of the season. The striking mix of bright colours red, orange, yellow, blue, and white successfully combines native flora with garden favourites. Origin Amenity Solutions Enquiry 33

Anniversary celebrates growth No sleepless nights with MM50 of Coronation Meadows
Ten years ago, the former Prince of Wales launched Coronation Meadows to honour the 60th year of the late Queen’s accession to the throne. In the face of the catastrophic loss of 97% of our wildflower meadows since the 1930s, the plan was to create new and restored meadows using donor seed from remaining fragments of ancient and traditional meadows.
The Wildlife Trusts and Plantlife – charities for whom the former Prince of Wales was patron – worked together to identify 60 species-rich meadows which are known as Coronation Meadows, one for every year of the Queen’s reign at that time. These special places became donors to provide precious seed to increase the amount of valuable and beautiful wildflower habitat elsewhere. The charities have done an audit of the success of the project which reveals that a fantastic 101 new wildflower meadows have been created or restored since the Coronation Meadows project began a decade ago. The charities are delighted that the Coronation Meadows project has increased the number of wildflower meadows and
benefitted a vast array of wildlife, from bees and butterflies to bats and birds. The area is still expanding as the charities continue to harvest and spread the wildflower seed in localities close to the original sites so that the distinctive character of each area’s flora is preserved. Biffa Award, through the Landfill Communities Fund, contributed £1million to fund the equipment and training needed for meadow restorations. In the first three years of the project alone, more than 700 volunteers gave their time to get the project off the ground. Seed was harvested from Coronation Meadows donor sites either as green hay, brush harvested seed or by hand, and this was used to seed second sites in the same area. Plantlife Meadows Enquiry 36
Jamie Foyster, owner of Sportsturf Management, has revealed that he has been sleeping that little bit easier since using MM50 grass seed.
Sportsturf Management currently provides all year-round pitch management for four clubs as well as carrying out end of season renovations for approximately twelve more. When Jamie is not providing first class management, installation, and repair of cricket pitches, he somehow finds time to be the Chairman of the Essex County Groundsman Association. Jamie first turned to MM50 ten years ago after trialling various brands of seed. It was the seed which impressed him the most and he has used it ever since. MM50 possesses exceptional shoot density along with tolerance to close mowing making it particularly suitable for cricket squares. This superior mix contains the perennial ryegrass cultivars, Singapore, Venice, Alison and Malibu, which
are renowned for providing a great sward for cricket use. Singapore is a fantastic cultivar for cricket partly due to its ability to recover from play and wear very quickly meaning that wickets can be back in play quicker after use. “We use MM50 across all of the grounds we look after,” said Jamie. “For the end of season work we will generally overseed every square - and then during the season, there might be a few ends which need topping up a little bit just to thicken them out. We might also use it later in the season to get the grass back in the foot holes to repair them and level them off. “In terms of the grass plant the MM50 produces, you get very good root depth and density, which gives it its brilliant wear tolerance. I have one pitch where they had six days of cricket and between the five-foot markers, the important bit in the middle of the pitch, it was still good grass coverage. This shows you how strong the plant is and that’s what
you want, because sometimes the weather dictates that you must use a pitch more than you want to.” MM50 is also treated with HEADSTART GOLD – a unique seaweed-based seed treatment which helps to ensure rapid and even germination. This tried and tested grass seed treatment helps the seed get off to the best possible start – making it ideal to use in the less than favourable conditions that can sometimes be found on cricket pitches during renovations. Managing the microclimate at Maesteg The unique hilltop location of Maesteg Golf Club in Wales provides a challenge to golfers and greenkeepers alike, the picturesque playing surfaces nestled in a valley with its very own microclimate. These conditions demand flexibility and durability from the grass seed, to cope with extremes of both moisture and temperature, and its mixtures from Johnsons Sports Seed that deliver just that.
“We first trialled Johnsons mixtures a good few years ago and right from the off, were impressed with the speed in which is germinated and established” explains James, who works alongside a team of three on the 18-hole James Braid designed course. “We wanted to go down the route of fescue, to fit with our sustainable maintenance approach and put us in a better position to cope with drought as our irrigation here isn’t the best.”
Deputy Head Greenkeeper James Matthewman explains how the James and the team sought advice combination of J Fescue, J All from their DLF Regional Technical Bent and J 4Turf from DLF are Manager Ian Barnett, along with retaining better coverage and plant Zak Thackeray at Indigrow, who health than ever, keeping them suggested they trial J Fescue from fungicide free for over four years. 130xi83 money doesnt grow on trees AW.pdf 1 23/03/2023 12:44:11

Dennis ES-510 delivers at Cheltenham Ladies’ College Ross Spry, Head of Grounds and Gardens at Cheltenham Ladies’ College, claims that his new Dennis ES-510 cylinder mower is supporting the college’s sustainability requirements. Ross, who has been working at Cheltenham Ladies’ College for 15 months, explained the reasons behind choosing a batterypowered cylinder mower. The mower Ross was keen to look at was the Dennis ES-510. The ES-510 is based on the popular Dennis FT510. With a choice of 12 interchangeable cassettes, the ES-510 is capable of scarifying down to -10mm. Ideal for fine turf it has the power to cut 10km on a single charge.
The ES-510 features a robust LCD keypad screen on the handlebar console providing the operator with a multitude of information options including speed, clip rate, service checks, lifetime running reports and battery information. Furthermore, traditional FT510 cassettes will also fit their battery-powered alternatives, meaning that customers will not have to purchase additional cassettes. The aim with the Dennis E-Series is to help professionals meet sustainability and environmental initiatives, reduce carbon footprint emissions, running costs and noise without any range anxiety. Redexim fleet completes year-round maintenance Frequently ranked among the top 20 courses in England, Royal West Norfolk sets the bar high when it comes to the play and presentation characteristics of links golf. Maintaining the 18-holes for the last 37 years is Gavin Playford, who is supported by a team of five and a fleet of Redexim equipment which, he says, gives them complete control over tasks around the site and throughout the maintenance calendar. A pair of Redexim overseeders have been helping with the project – a Double Disc 1430 and a Speedseed 1500.
With overseeding work complete, come the Autumn the team will then switch their attention to an intensive aeration programme, delivered by their Redexim Level Spike and trusty Verti-Drain® 7416. “On top of that, we also have a Redexim Turf Tidy which we purchased two years ago, again from Ben Burgess” Gavin adds. “This has been brilliant in helping us to thin out some of our roughs in an attempt to encourage finer grasses.”

Attraxor for end-of-season protection Riptide helps to transform the greens at Dudsbury Five years ago, Dudsbury Golf Club embarked on an ambitious project to revolutionise the composition of their greens. The decision to introduce ProSelect Riptide, a creeping bentgrass exclusive to ICL, was met with both anticipation and trepidation. Fast forward to today, and the results speak for themselves. The greens at Dudsbury Golf Club have undergone a remarkable transformation, thanks to the successful sward composition change. ProSelect Riptide has proven to be a game-changer in the golf course management industry. Its unique characteristics and superior performance have made it an ideal choice for Dudsbury Golf Club.
The benefits of ProSelect Riptide extend beyond aesthetics and playability. Its deep rooting system ensures better drought tolerance and reduced water consumption, making it an environmentally friendly choice. Additionally, the grass recovers quickly from pitch marks and other forms of damage, resulting in quicker healing times and improved overall turf health. The collaboration between Dudsbury Golf Club and ICL, serves as a shining example of how investing in advanced turf technologies can pay off in the long run. It not only enhances the reputation of the golf club but also attracts new members and visitors who appreciate the value of exceptional playing conditions. ICL
Plant growth regulators (PGRs) play a significant role in a groundsman’s arsenal when it comes to implementing maintenance strategies to improve turf. The correct course of treatment over the winter months can provide protection, as well as a reduction in Poa annua. The unique formula of Attraxor makes it possible for turf care professionals to meet these needs effectively. Attraxor can be used to regulate the growth of all managed amenity turf, for example, golf courses, sports pitches and training grounds, at a rate of 375 — 1,500 g/ha. Root growth is promoted, and turf colour and quality are maintained. A lack of sunlight in the winter months can lead to an increase in Poa because the thinning grass can give way to Poa in the spring
which can cause ongoing issues in maintenance. Less light, thinning turf and then the added element of Poa means the turf becomes very high maintenance. With all of this happening throughout the winter when pitches are heavily used, this means that maintenance regimes are tough going. Attraxor contains prohexadione-calcium, an active ingredient that regulates growth and also limits the spread of Poa annua by reducing seedhead production. It weakens the Poa, while strengthening the sward and improving density. Contrary to other plant growth regulators that need to be activated by the plant enzymes, Attraxor can be used later in the season during cooler weather (optimal temperature between 7-20°C). BASF

Johnsons J Tee proves the solution to shade issues club
N E E GR IS THE NEW
ORANGE! A trial of J Tee from the Johnsons Sports Seed range has now been rolled out course-wide at Knutsford Golf Club in Cheshire, after solving a number of issues on their heavily shaded tees. The combination of high footfall and a lack of sunlight caused by trees have previously posed a number of problems when it comes to the maintenance of the small tees, which Course Manager David Jones now claims to be a thing of the past thanks to the ‘second to none’ results from the J Tee mix. Stuart Yarwood, our Regional DLF Technical Manager, recommended Johnsons J Tee - combining 4Turf® tetraploid ryegrass along with traditional ryegrass and strong creeping red fescue. The additional inclusion of 5% Sabrena rough stalked meadow
grass makes J Tee truly unique, creating a mixture that delivers exceptional disease resistance, rapid establishment and a hardwearing sward even under heavy shade, making it ideal for golf tees and pathways. The fineness of leaf and shoot density of Sabrena is comparable to a high-quality bent cultivar, while its speed of establishment is akin to that of perennial ryegrass – enhanced further by DLF’s Growmax seed coating which enhances overseeding results in difficult conditions. In shade trials, Sabena is amongst the hardest wearing varieties on the market. The successes of J Tee come alongside three years of fantastic results with Johnsons J All Bent on the greens.

Trilo M3 delivers large fuel and labour savings An M3 Multipurpose from Trilo has become a valuable extra member of the team at Knaresborough Golf Club, following an extensive search for a more time-friendly solution to the task of leaf clearance. Purchased in May 2023 with both a flail rotor and brush, not only has the M3 delivered versatility for tasks around the course and throughout the maintenance calendar, its large capacity and high-productivity have also resulted in large fuel and labour savings. Knaresborough Golf Club Head Greenkeeper Neil Jarrett and a team of four have come to rely on their Trilo. The Trilo M3 Multipurpose is a 3-in-1 machine that, with a range
of optional attachments, can facilitate a range of operations including scarification, cut and collect and debris clearance. A working width of 1.5m makes the unit both compact and manoeuvrable, while the hopper capacity of 3m3 and hand-held suction hose makes vacuuming of materials from large or hardto-reach areas a breeze. “The wanderhose has transformed how we clean and clear clippings and leaves, particularly around the clubhouse and the dykes we have on the course,” said Neil. “Tasks that woul d have previously involved three people, two rotary mowers to mulch the leaves, a blower
and hand-rake can now all be cleared in a matter of minutes by one person. “Using one machine with a hopper the size of the one on the M3 also means we’re making less trips to empty, reducing fuel, saving money and moving towards being more sustainable which is something we’re actively trying to address as a club.” Together with the brush which makes for effective sweeping and clearance of turf areas and hard ground such as the club car park, Knaresborough also purchased a flail rotor attachment enabling them to utilise the M3 for onepass cut and collect. Delivered by local dealer, RT Machinery Ltd, the package includes a Ventrac 4520 allterrain compact tractor unit together with a selection of attachments including an articulating Contour deck, a Tough Cut deck, a Triple Cylinder unit and a Trencher. Lee Bishop is the Course Manager and is now in his 24th
year at the club. He said: “The Contour deck is articulated at both ends and that makes it ideal for bunker surrounds and tee banks but it has been a godsend during the winter months as we have been using it on our fairways when it is too wet to cut with our fairway mowers. “We can get out when it’s wet and put some definition down; the members have noticed and we’ve had many favourable comments. The Triple Cylinder unit will be used for the perimeter fairway cut and this has enabled us to remove a dedicated machine from our fleet.
“Finally, a shout-out for Price Turfcare, RT Machinery and Tom Stidder. Price Turfcare, the importer, have been so reactive and professional to work with; RT Machinery are renowned for the way they treat customers and we can certainly support that and Tom Stidder, who did the installation training, was extremely thorough and knowledgeable. Line Marking

Making the right choice for you with help from Pitchmark In the world of modern line marking machines, two popular options stand out: spray line markers and wheel-to-wheel markers. There are key differences between these two machine types which have implications for individual line marking needs. For those who prefer a classic approach, wheel-to-wheel markers are a reliable choice.
These machines use three wheels, one of which is situated inside an open paint tank. This setup ensures a consistent paint usage regardless of your walking speed, as the amount of paint applied remains the same. These markers have no complex electronics and usually come at a more budget-friendly price compared to spray markers.
Requiring minimal maintenance, they are straightforward enough for anyone at your club to use. These qualities make them an excellent fit for grassroots clubs. It is important to note that these machines are cheaper than sprays, however do require more paint to mark a pitch, meaning they may be more expensive long term. With Pitchmark’s Transfer paint, you can expect to mark a full size football
pitch with 6.5L. Spray line markers are more technical, utilising a nozzle, pump, and battery to spray paint between two edges or discs, like using a stencil. The spraying mechanism results in a thin, even layer of paint covering the grass, providing bright and quick drying lines with minimal paint usage. Since spray machines maintain a constant flow of paint, your walking speed influences the amount of paint put down— walk faster, use less paint; walk slower, use more paint. You can also change nozzles to find a personal sweet spot between paint consumption and walking speed. It’s worth noting that spray machines do demand a higher degree of upkeep, need charging, and require a bit more expertise to operate effectively. However, the superior line quality is well worth the effort. Particularly when paired with Pitchmark’s Ecoline+ or Direct line marking paints, these machines can cover up to six full-size football pitches using just 10L of paint, achieving stadium-level brilliance and longevity. Spray markers are the go-to choice for professionals seeking top-notch results. When it comes to choosing between spray and wheel-to-wheel line marking machines, understanding the distinctions is crucial. Wheel-to-wheel markers offer a dependable and straightforward solution, while spray markers provide advanced precision and quality, albeit with some maintenance demands. Ultimately, the choice depends on your specific requirements and the level of professionalism you seek. Pitchmark

Packed with a range of brandnew innovative features, the TinyLineMarker Pro X is an exciting new GPS robot designed to make line marking projects as streamlined and effortless as possible. The TinyLineMarker Pro X easily manages line marking from start to finish, whether it’s initial marking or overmarking. The robot runs on the ultra-reliable RTK (Real-Time Kinematic) network which means it doesn’t need a base station like some robots use. The robot will mark or remark the pitch in the correct location every time, even if previous lines have disappeared. Once set up it incredibly simple to use and very reliable.
pitches to be marked out in a specific order of their choosing. The robot will then mark out the designated areas without having to recalibrate the robot each time. To help avoid problems, the robot displays the route it will take to mark out all queued pitches, so the user can ensure that the path is clear of obstructions for a seamless line marking project. As a part of this feature, the robot also gives an estimated time of completion as well as the distance to drive so users know when they can expect their project to be completed. Working hand in hand with the Multi-Select Tool, the Low Paint Alert feature ensures no time is wasted due to running low on paint when sending the Pro X off to mark multiple pitches in succession. When the robot is running low on paint, an automatic alert is sent to the user’s hand-held tablet notifying paint level is low. In addition, the robot will also send an alert if there is blockage which is preventing the robot from marking. Turf Tank Two unveiled during new exhibition
Vitax Amenity has a range of popular turf management machines, including the TXE606 Pro line marker.
easy to use handlebar-mounted controls and reinforced side frames for added strength. The handlebars fold over for easy transport and storage.
Turf Tank, the global leader in robotic line marking, unveil the industry defining Turf Tank Two at the inaugural GroundsFest in September.
Several sprayer module upgrades have made fine-tuning simple with the twist of a knob, including disc height, width and a disc ruler for a better overview.
The TXE Pro machines features a 2.5 litre flush tank uses clean water to flush filter, pump, spray lines and spray head.
Performance and accuracy are the hallmarks of Turf Tank, and a combination of refinements, including two motor drives for better momentum and new wheels for improved grip and traction, have led to faster marking times with the Turf Tank Two.
Tighter tolerances ensure sharper and crisp lines between 5-15cm, with the rack-and-pinion system letting you go from minimum to maximum in a single turn. The height of the sprayer discs can be easily adjusted in increments of 5mm, allowing you to approximate the correct sprayer height. Finegrained adjustments can be made via a turning knob to get the height precisely as you want and get consistent results every mark.
Providing specialist products for sport and amenity turf both in the UK and overseas, Vitax Amenity has established a reputation for producing a comprehensive range of products with a strong emphasis on quality, efficacy and cost-effectiveness. Vitax Amenity offers an exceptional level of expertise and will have all of its sales team on hand to answer any questions at this year’s SALTEX event. The line marking machines have enhanced design features for improved performance and greater control and the top-ofthe-range models come complete with a factory fitted flush tank and back-to-tank facility.
Key benefits include: no need to empty tank between jobs or sites; prevents build-up of residues to help prolong the working life of the machine; back-to-tank system enables pressure at spray nozzle to be adjusted to suit conditions; and back-to-tank system also agitates liquid in the main tank to help deliver consistent line colour.
While the speed and accuracy of marking are paramount to efficiency, so is the usability of the Turf Tank Two.
To make maintenance more manageable, the module is now an independent part. It can be removed by loosening two screws, allowing easy access to specific parts, while one-hand solenoid removal has also been made possible for quicker working. A new front panel provides quick pause/resume options, LED indicators to show the robot status and a start/stop sprayer button. A LED indicator on the battery has been fitted for a quick status check - if it’s plugged in or not - and batteries can now be hot-swapped without needing to shut down the robot.
21
Numerous ergonomic improvements have been made to make working with the Turf Tank Two quicker and easier. A tilted pump cover allows up to 20 litres of paint to be slid into the robot rather than being lifted in and out of the top. The newly designed compartment increases efficiency by ensuring the suction rod can use all the paint, and battery access has also been simplified, with only one movement needed to slide it in place. Additionally, handles are now on the front and back to make lifting in and out of vans and buggies easier. New in-app guides are introduced to walk you through most features, and the new Wizard guides you through the cleaning and priming process of the paint system. To quickly troubleshoot any calibration errors, a new augmented reality guided calibration routine lets you take a picture of lines and automatically fix any calibration errors.

All TXE machines offer 25 litre tank (enough for up to 3 football pitches) and provide ine widths from 1” to 5” (2.5 cm to 13 cm). There is no noise or pollution and the models boast
All of these features also work in Offline Mode, which means you have the full functionality of the Turf Tank Two in cases where an internet connection can’t be established. The new software also builds on Turf Tank’s leading customer service through remote access. Turf Tank staff can assist in setting up fields, diagnose problems and provide support instantly wherever you are. Suståne delivers perfect bill of health for club A year-round programme from Suståne Natural Fertilizers has been effectively managing moisture and turf stresses to keep the 27-hole course at Wellow Golf Club disease-free. Course Manager Lee Payne describes how the ‘perfect combination’ of Suståne products including 5-2-10+Fe and 6-2-4 Turf Revival has seen a drastic reduction in the frequency
and severity of a variety of turf diseases, lowering fungicide applications and delivering longlasting visual appeal. “It was the organic aspect that led me to Suståne initially,” Lee explains. “We were looking for something that would boost the good bacteria in the profile and not be harmful to the environment or our aquatic life, while also keeping on top of
the variety of turf diseases that appear.” The programme, drawn up by Suståne’s Russell Riley and Neil Rogers from AGS consists of 4-6-4 slow-release fertiliser, 5-2-4+Fe for a boost of colour during December, January and February before a switch to 5-2-10+FE during spring and autumn. Lee also uses Bolster Liquid Biostimulant and Suståne
6-2-4 Turf Revival which he claims provides instant recovery following heavy renovations in March and August. “Recovery is one of the biggest factors for us, with tight turnarounds in maintenance windows and this is where Suståne has been fantastic,” added Lee. “The extended slowrelease nitrogen within the 6-2-4 product gives us an instant boost
followed by a month or two of consistent recovery. “We also have a couple of greens particularly susceptible to Anthracnose. If this starts to appear we simply put down a half rate of the 5-2-10 which provides enough goodness back into the soil to effectively control any outbreaks.” Suståne

Diamond Green liquid fertiliser ICL’s revamped website with essential plant oils ICL’s revamped website www.icl-growingsolutions.uk - serves as a comprehensive resource for detailed information on the wide range of products including important technical data and application information.
To help minimise disease pressure, Indigrow have developed Diamond Green, the latest innovation to the turf managers fight against well know turf diseases. Diamond Green is a liquid fertiliser based on potassium, calcium and magnesium which contains essential plant oils to enhance plant health and increase disease resistance. The combination of potassium, calcium and magnesium
included in the Diamond Green formulation helps increase cell wall strength within the plant and enhance root mass. The increased resistance to disease in achieved through this improvement in cell wall strength and increased root mass. As well as the macro and micro nutrients, Diamond Green also contains essential plant oils which further enhance plant health and the ability of the turf grass plant
to resist disease pressure. The latest research undertaken has proven that these essential plant oils have shown to directly have an effect on the pathogen, in terms of slowing down the growth inhibiting the disease. All of these benefits to the turf grass plant help to improve the plants natural resistance to many known pathogens. Indigrow Enquiry 76
Going native for sensible lawn care Sustainable and organic gardening are similar and often work hand in hand, according to the Lawn Association. They are more than just a trend, and are a responsible way to
cultivate plants while preserving our environment. By prioritising eco-conscious practices such as composting, natural pest control, and rejecting products such as
synthetic polymer coated fertilisers that poison our lawns and gardens, we can reduce the negative impact on our ecosystem. With the change in climate and the fluctuating weather that we now have on a regular basis, grass can get confused. It is no wonder then that grass species are important when it comes to helping these plants along in our gardens. Native grasses adapt well in the UK, no matter what the weather. Our UK fescues and bents are a much more sustainable way to go when planning your lawn. Nothing screams organic quite as loudly as the True Garden Range. This product says goodbye to chemical fertilisers and offers a game-changing organic alternative with True Grass. This sustainable and earth-friendly option not only
nourishes your grass but also enriches your soil for longlasting health. True Grass fertiliser is made from recycled food waste, which breaks down into useable minerals and vitamins. It also contains humic, fulvic and amino acids, as well as seaweed, mycorrhiza and an organic wetter. Sustainable, organic and rich in all the essential elements key to healthy grass and soils, True Grass is the sensible choice for kind lawn care. Sustainable lawn care promotes responsible land stewardship, educating us on the importance of long-term harmony between human cultivation and the natural world. Let’s make a positive impact on our environment, one garden at a time. Lawn Association Enquiry 78

COMPO is top of the range for bowls greens
GreenBest’s new and organic products GreenBest has a wide and unique range of Velvit fertilisers, wetting agents and biostimulants. It also offers a a bespoke fertiliser services, and is continually looking to bring new products to market. The Velvit range has had some new additions. In late spring 2022 GreenBest launched a brand-new granular wetting agent – SATUGRAN which is now available to purchase through one of our many distributors and has given some very positive results throughout the UKs summer drought.
Ian Dickson, a bowling green contractor, believes that COMPO EXPERT products have proved to be top of range without the premium price tag. Ian originally started his career in greenkeeping but switched to bowling green maintenance ten years ago. While admitting it is a completely ‘different animal’, Ian says he quickly got an appetite for maintaining bowls greens and has done so ever since. He explained how he first started using COMPO EXPERT products on bowls greens. “In my greenkeeping days I used to order a lot of products from Agrovista Amenity (the exclusive national distributor of COMPO EXPERT’S turf products in the UK) and my representative was Ramsay MacGregor. I stayed in touch with Ramsay when I switched to bowls because he is very knowledgeable, and he
gives valid reasons behind using products.”
promote growth and a quick green-up.
COMPO EXPERT believes in sustainable, integrated turf management by focusing on modern fertilisation concepts, consistent regeneration of growth and optimal support of the plant’s own physiological processes. All of which promote vitalisation, stress tolerance and root development while providing optimum turf quality.
“The green where we applied the Fertilis had a lot of bare areas and the growth has been tremendous,” said Ian. “We applied it in May and had a full 12 weeks out of it. There has been less disease, the sward is a lot thicker, and even during a big drought period the greens performed superbly.” Ian also maintains a sand-based green which is prone to leaching. For this green he applied Floranid Twin Eagle K – an extra fine granulated slow-release complex fertiliser of excellent solubility.
The innovative product range includes specialty mineral and stabilized fertilisers, slow and controlled release fertilisers, water soluble and liquid fertilisers as well as biostimulants, trace elements and soil conditioners. The first product Ian tried from the COMPO EXPERT range was Fertilis Speed, an NPK complex fertiliser with emphasis on nitrogen for spring and summer application to

Innovative hearing protection benefits professionals using tools The landscaping community has been aware of the risks associated with exposure to noise for some time now. Thankfully, as technology continues to improve productivity and efficiency, it has also enabled workers to better protect themselves from hazards that come with the job, including, but not limited to noise. The introduction of cutting-edge equipment, such as ear defenders with communication devices and noise reducing technology, not only reduce exposure to harmful noise levels, but also allow for better communication between colleagues, which means warning signals highlighting potential dangers are easier to exchange.
While no price can be put on safety, it is reassuring to know that the latest offerings often boast more than noise protection, such as improved communication channels between colleagues, and intuitive technology that can help the user become better aware of the activity going on around them in a typically noisy environment, further boosting safety credentials. Examples of this kind of noise protection technology are STIHL’s ADVANCE ProCOM ear defenders and the ADVANCE ProCOM X-VENT helmet, which sees the original headset fitted as standard to STIHL’s X-VENT safety helmet.
Both headsets offer on-site communication between 16 other ADVANCE ProCOM users, covering a range of up to 600m, between two users, with each headset acting as a repeater to extend the range should more than two headsets be used at one time. What’s more, if a team is spread over a large area, a range alarm notifies the users that their headset connection may be lost. Offering an impressive attenuation value of SNR 31 and active noise suppression, the headset is highly reliable in the protection against noise generated by petrol-powered equipment regularly in action across landscaping sites. Its intuitive ambient mode means that noises, such as traffic and
passers-by, can be heard easily in order to prevent accidents, de-activating once loud noise (such as a chainsaw) is detected to protect the users’ ears accordingly. This ambient mode means a conversation with someone, such as a passer-by or a customer can be had, even whilst wearing the ear defenders. The ADVANCE ProCOM and ADVANCE ProCOM X-VENT also feature qualities such as smartphone voice assistance, an integrated FM radio and app customisation to create closed groups of users. Additionally, they offer both open-mic and push-to-talk options to suit the level of communication required. STIHL

ET Lander is the extra staff member at the Olympic Park The Etesia ET Lander electric utility vehicle is like having an extra member of staff according to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park’s Head Gardener Gary Spreadbury.
Following a competitive procurement process, idverde was selected as a grounds maintenance partner for the Queen Elizabeth Park in in early 2012. Ever since then it has been responsible for park, plant and wildlife management and maintenance. Gary Spreadbury has been the Head Gardener at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park since May this year, and he claims his working life has been made a little easier by the Etesia ET Lander. “What I really like about the ET Lander is that it fits and can
manoeuvre in tight spaces around the Olympic Park,” he said.
“We’ve got a lot of small paths which big vehicles can’t fit down, so it’s very efficient and time saving. It’s used mainly for the transporting of materials around the site, especially during the winter and autumn months when it comes to the leaf clearing and for the mulching of the gardens.” One hundred per cent electric, spacious, well-equipped and user-friendly, the ET Lander is built on a robust chassis and has an array of options including a three-way tipper bed with dual control from the fully fitted twoseater cab or by remote control when outside the vehicle. With a length of just 3.72 meters, the ET Lander is very compact. Thanks to the power steering,
the short turning radius of 4.40 meters and 360° visibility, it goes anywhere. The autonomy of the vehicle lasts for a full working day – without noise pollution, can transport loads of up to 940kgs and can also tow up to 750kgs. The latest models are fully N1 homologation compliant meaning that the ET Landers are fully road legal along with being able to be used off road. They also feature lithium-ion batteries which ensures that the range of the ET Lander extends to 100km and have a charger system compatible with a standard type 2EV car charger. Etesia Enquiry 91

Turf professionals gather for seminar
Weedingtech become members of British Water
Dun Laoghaire Golf Club recently played host to the insightful Turf Science Live seminar, an event co-organised by ICL and Syngenta.
Events such as Turf Science Live play a pivotal role in enhancing the standards of the turf industry by ensuring professionals are equipped with up-to-date knowledge and practices.
Weedingtech, founders of the world’s leading commercial herbicide-free weed control solution Foamstream, are pleased to announce they have become members of British Water.
ICL Enquiry 105
Using the combination of hot water and a specially formulated organic foam, Foamstream is proven to effectively combat unwanted vegetation in a range of situations and is fully approved for safe use within the wastewater sector.
With the goal of sharing the latest knowledge and trends in turf management, the seminar proved to be a very
useful gathering for industry professionals. Attracting around 100 participants, the event brought together greenkeepers and groundsmen from sporting venues across Ireland. The day was packed with lively discussions and opportunities for collaborative learning.
Weeds that are left to accumulate can pose a serious risk to successful sanitation, specifically in and around water filter beds.If allowed to grow, vegetation can interfere with the rotation of the machinery, impacting air flow and making the cleaning process inefficient. Together with inhibiting drainage through the filter bed, weeds can also damage
the media that fills the filter bed or pass through the bed entirely and contaminate the watercourse. Currently, many in the wastewater industry rely on manual weeding. The time-consuming nature of hand-weeding frequently means that operations are not conducted frequently enough to be considered effective, while also proving unpleasant and unproductive for the operatives. However, companies including Severn Trent, South West Water, Wessex Water and Anglian Water have already made the switch to Foamstream. Being 100% organic, Foamstream is approved for use on water filter beds – treating weeds, together with seeds, spores and roots to reduce re-growth and the number of treatment cycles required per year.
Together with a reduction in treatments, Foamstream also presents a significant saving in labour treating a 600m 2 waterbed in as little as four hours, which would otherwise take a team of four people five days to manually weed. Weedingtech
