New SAPCA Quality System ensures consistently high standards
The Sports and Play Construction Association, SAPCA, has strengthened its role in promoting high standards within construction of sports and play facilities, with the launch of its new Quality System.
The new Quality System brings together a number of key areas of SAPCA’s activities and puts a strong emphasis on regular inspections of SAPCA members’ work, to ensure that contractors always deliver projects to the absolute satisfaction of their clients.
SAPCA chief executive Chris Trickey comments: “The Quality System ensures that only specialist companies that can consistently deliver high standards of sports and play facility construction can join SAPCA and then remain as members.”

Precision bites back
The new owners of Crocodile Precision (formally Crocodile Golf) have provided an insight into the future vision of the company. Customers will continue to include sports clubs, machinery dealers and the groundscare and landscape trade, as well as local authorities and OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers). Formerly based at Wolverhampton, Crocodile provides quality cutting cylinders and bottom blades. The full story is on page 3.
The main elements of the Quality System are:
• Strict membership criteriaSAPCA’s membership criterion ensures that only specialist companies and organsiations, with a proven track record and trading history, can be admitted.
Financial stability - SAPCA works closely with credit reference specialist Experian and bases its membership criteria on the Commercial Delphi Scoring System used by Experian within its Risk Reports.
• Customer service - Each year all SAPCA members are required to re-sign the Association’s Code of Professional Conduct, through which companies guarantee a continued commitment to quality.
• Standards of design and construction - SAPCA has a series of Codes of Practice that set out and define the industry’s standards of construction.
• Inspection of contractors’ projects - In order to ensure that SAPCA contractors continue to deliver high quality facilities, the Association has introduced a new inspection programme, through which checks are carried out on a selection of members’ projects, both during construction and on completion.
• Complaint resolutionSAPCA can provide impartial assistance in the resolution of complaints and disputes, should it ever be necessary, on the
technical aspects of projects.
• Customer feedback - The clients of all SAPCA members are invited to provide feedback on their projects, and the performance of the companies that they have employed.
• Education and training -
Marshalls delivers drainage to upgrade M1
Marshalls has supplied 15,000 linear metres of its Mono Beany one-piece combined kerb and drainage to the new M1 ‘smart motorway’ scheme, stretching over nine miles of highway.
The innovative one-piece design significantly reduces installation time, and on the M1 scheme ensured the contractor Costain was able to install 340 linear metres per day, surpassing its initial target of 240 metres.
Mono Beany is manufactured using ultra-tough M-Tech concrete and comes in one metre units which allows for a single mechanical lift. Each unit can carry up to 40 tonnes (Class D400) when trafficked which minimises haunching and reduces installation costs, while helping
contractors to meet deadlines and keep works disruption to a minimum.
Marshalls also developed a bespoke transition unit for the scheme as part of the Highways Agency’s focus on innovation. The transition unit allows the scheme to meet the required hydraulic rates and came within budget without the
runs being over-engineered. The unit now forms part of Marshalls’ standard linear drainage offer.
Marshalls has since supplied Mono Beany to the Bedale Bypass, described as the gateway to the Yorkshire Dales.

Welcome...
Have you felt a little disjointed this summer? Did you reach August with a nagging feeling that something was different?
More than likely you were not alone, particularly in the landscape and amenity industry. We reach September and for the first time in a long time, all routes are not leading to Windsor Racecourse for the annual SALTEX exhibition and networking opportunity.
This year we’ll all be gathering at the NEC in Birmingham in early November, under the roof of one of the cavernous exhibition halls. It is already shaping up to be a bigger event in terms of the number of exhibitors and the education and training seminars that the Institute of Groundsmanship has arranged.
The big question will be whether the industry as a whole supports new-look SALTEX and we see an increase in visitors too. Certainly, the IoG is pulling out all the stops to ensure SALTEX 2015 is a success. This year’s event also comes with the added attraction of the IoG’s annual awards, taking place during the exhibition.
There is little doubt that SALTEX needed to change and the IoG has certainly been bold in its approach. The countdown to NEC Birmingham in November has now begun in earnest.
The team from TSP Media and Landscape & Amenity Product Update will be at SALTEX, handing out our popular little footballs again and with at least one big surprise at our exhibition stand guaranteed this year.
The only question that really remains is – will we see you there?
This month, Jane Carley takes a comprehensive look at the forest equipment market and we have a special spotlight on brushcutters. There are also showcases on shelters, canopies and walkways, as well as fencing and security.
We also have our usual round up of news, views, products and innovation from across the industry.

Professional bodies support SALTEX 2015
Many of the industry’s professional bodies will be supporting SALTEX 2015 and have confi rmed their presence at the exhibition, which will be held at the NEC Birmingham on the 4 & 5 November.
The British and International Golf Greenkeepers’ Association (BIGGA) and the Amenity Forum will join the Sport and Play Construction Association (SAPCA), the Arb Association, the Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI), the Institute for Occupational Safety & Health (IOSH) and the Parks Alliance in supporting SALTEX 2015’s LEARNING LIVE education programme.
BIGGA-badged seminars will include ‘Improve Turf Quality through Measuring, Analysing and Effective Planning’, presented by Steve Gingell, agronomy manager at the Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI). While an overview of Primo Maxx, the successful plant growth regulator and its use in sportsturf, will be presented by Daniel Lightfoot MG, UK business manager for Syngenta and Henry Bechelet, technical sales manager for Everris.
BIGGA’s educational seminars have always been well received
at SALTEX and Jim Croxton, BIGGA’s CEO, revealed why the organisation is engaging again this year.
“We know that a lot of greenkeepers like to attend SALTEX because there is some cross over in exhibitors that are at both SALTEX and BTME. There is also a cross over for people who know groundsmen and are interested in going to catch up with friends and network. Putting education on at SALTEX is the logical next step. Not everyone can get to Harrogate and we feel it’s a benefi t to our members to have education on wherever we can present it,” he said.
Other professional bodies supporting the show include: The Agricultural Engineers Association (AEA), the Association of Play Industries (API), the Crop Protection Association (CPA) and the British Agricultural & Garden Machinery Association (BAGMA).

Crocodile Precision targets groundcare industry
As manufacturers of world class cutting systems Crocodile Precision (formally Crocodile Golf) is looking to target the groundcare industry with highquality British-made products.
Formerly based at Wolverhampton, Crocodile’s biggest customer is Dennis Mowers at Derby and it has been providing quality cutting cylinders and bottom blades for the company’s globally renowned mowers for a number of years.
A management group consisting of six members of the Dennis senior team has now purchased the assets and intellectual property rights from Crocodile Golf and formed Crocodile Precision Ltd.
The deal was concluded in late February 2015 where the new team began the challenge
of moving the manufacturing operation from Wolverhampton to Derby in a tight two month schedule.
Ian Howard, who led the buy-out team, explained that the focus of the new company going forward is emphasising the high quality materials and extensive skills and experience of the staff at Crocodile Precision to produce world class solutions.
“There will always be pressure on people to look for lower cost alternatives,” he said. “Inferior quality components will result in more frequent changes, poorer cut and thus dramatically increased costs.
“With a typical municipal triple taking anything up to eight hours for a change-over; inferior quality blades and cylinders are a false economy.”
Ian explained the massive challenge that involved relocating from Wolverhampton to Derby, including moving the specialist machinery weighing almost 80 tonnes and undertaking extensive repair and refurbishment of the equipment.
“The processes involved in producing cylinders and a blade is complex and a ‘black art’ to get things just right,” he added. “A lot of this know-how lay with the key staff at Wolverhampton some of whom had 20 years of knowledge and expertise. Our team consists of four from Wolverhampton who now travel up to Derby on a daily basis.”
Both the cutting cylinders and bottom blades are being manufactured on site in Derby after an initial investment of over £200,000. Capacity is said to be
10,000 cylinders per year and in excess of 60,000 bottom blades.
Marketing will commence imminently with stands at SALTEX and BTME already booked Crocodile Precision is just 16 weeks under new ownership but is ready to take on the rest in the replacement blade and cylinder market by offering quality and service proudly made in Great Britain.

Charterhouse awarded PIP machinery contract by The FA
The Football Association has announced the formal launch of the Pitch Improvement Programme (PIP) and a partnership between The FA and Charterhouse Turf Machinery.
The programme is aimed at improving the quality of natural turf pitches across all levels of the game with specialist advice and guidance via site visits, with the opportunity to obtain grants and discounted rates off the recommended machinery required to improve pitches.
A website has also been developed with the aim of supporting local groundsmen and volunteers.
Charterhouse Turf Machinery has been selected as the preferred partner for the Programme, signing a four year contract to be the sole machinery supplier. With the aim of getting more people playing football, this key initiative has been detailed in The FA’s National Facilities Strategy, and will support the delivery of the new FA National Game Strategy. The machinery and support available to clubs and leagues will help to ensure better facilities are available for both training and matches.
Kelly Simmons, FA Director of Participation and Delivery, said: “The Pitch Improvement Programme was established in
direct response to a growing call from local clubs for help with pitch improvements.
“The expertise and quality of the machinery offered will be invaluable and offers a genuinely sustainable solution for those clubs seeking to improve the quality of their pitches.”

Grass is greener for UK’s giant pandas
Grass expert, Barenbrug UK, has supplied its BAR 50 SOS grass seed mix for the UK’s only giant panda sure, at RZSS Edinburgh Zoo.
In the winter of 2011, when the pandas arrived in the UK, the custom-built enclosure needed a little help to maintain grass cover.
Simon Jones, Sustainability Manager at RZSS Edinburgh Zoo, explains more: “On a horticultural front, the two outdoor giant panda enclosures have lots of shade and clay substrate, which makes for poor plant drainage.
“Add the weight of two 100kg plus pandas padding around, and the ground becomes very compacted. Grass cover becomes more of a challenge.”
Simon turned to Dr David Greenshields, Barenbrug Research and Development Manager, for advice.
Dr Greenshields commented: “We recommended BAR 50 SOS because of its ability to renovate permanent turf areas quickly and in very cold temperatures.
“It’s perfect for leisure and facilities professionals, who need a high-performance mix that solves specifi c challenges.
Critical for people, like Simon, who have a limited establishment window.”
BAR 50 SOS is the successful selection of thousands of progeny from Barenbrug’s extensive breeding programme—and offers unprecedented, proven results. It germinates down to 3.5°C and grows faster than any other seed at low temperatures.
Simon added: “We sowed the entire enclosure and planted plenty of whip alder trees to soak up residual moisture. BAR 50 SOS roots deep and can handle shady conditions, so it’s as hardwearing as it is quick to establish. The enclosure is less
boggy now and looks much better.”
The pandas, Tian Tian and Yang Guang—on loan from the Chinese government, since
2011—are both under close scrutiny as the world eagerly awaits news of a potential pregnancy.

Roundup ProBio is the contractor’s choice for Japanese Knotweed
Greater efficacy, improved rainfastness and reassuring safety has made Roundup ProBio from Monsanto the herbicide of choice for specialist contractor The Knotweed Company Ltd.
With its head office in Northamptonshire, the company has depots across England and Wales and offers a countrywide service for control of invasive weeds.
Managing director Brian Taylor said: “We take care of everything from herbicide application to excavation where it is needed, and since the new formulation Roundup ProBio was launched we have been very impressed with the improvements to a tried and tested brand.”
Application services include spraying, stem injection and weed wiping, so Mr Taylor and his team have plenty of experience in using different chemicals.
“Roundup has always been an excellent product, very effective and safe to use, but the Roundup ProBio formulation is even better. It is rainfast in just one hour and the take up to the plant is much improved. It is also very
safe so we can be confi dent about COSHH assessments.”
Highly effective in challenging conditions, Roundup ProBio makes the best use of application windows for greater effi ciency. It also offers enhanced stewardship features including new low drift properties.
Roundup ProBio’s formulation features patented technology
utilising 360g ai/litre of glyphosate acid as the potassium salt and two surfactants to deliver optimum effi cacy and enhanced stewardship.
Stem injection is another specialist area, and Mr Taylor cautions that while it can be extremely effective and is ideal where surrounding foliage needs to be protected, the technique requires skill and planning.
“First of all, the plant needs to be at the right growth stage with stems thicker than one inch at the base for effective treatment,” he comments. “There is also the risk that if too high a dose is used, the Japanese Knotweed may become dormant and then you may fi nd new growth up to 3m high a few years later.”

Set in 225 acres of a picturesque landscape, amongst 300 year old ancient oak and sweet chestnut trees, with the beautiful River

Paint stability provides key to expansion
For over four generations, the Fiddes Group have produced a range of high quality coatings for wood, metal and glass, supplying major PLC’s and furniture and fl ooring manufacturers in both the UK and internationally.
The Fiddes Group purchased Bowcom Ltd in 2005, and embarked on a comprehensive overview of the market, and invested heavily in new production facilities and research and development.
Bowcom has developed a new Low Volume High Pressure (LVHP) marking paint. ATOMIC offers unsurpassed atomization through all hollow cone nozzles available in the market, and is available from Bowcom either directly or through our network of Distributors, both in the UK and internationally.
Stability in solution remained a priority, and following extensive
market research it became clear that many clients adopting similar systems had experienced very limited shelf life when paint was stored for three months or over. Bowcom has formulated ATOMIC to directly address this issue, with stability signifi cantly extended and no separation or ‘packing’ evident.
ATOMIC offers an exceptionally bright, durable quick drying line, with coverage as little as 1.1 litres to over-mark a standard size football pitch.
Whilst ATOMIC remains compatible through other systems currently available on the market, Bowcom is in the process of developing a dedicated applicator that should be available during the latter part of 2015.

options available with the launch of a new 250ml sized can.
Over 260 shades can be produced in this sample pot size, enabling specifiers to see the complete

Sadolin Superdec is renowned for its comprehensive colour palette, as well as its outstanding protective qualities, which together make it one of the most popular ranges within the Sadolin brand for specifiers.
It also contracts and expands with the wood dependent on the weather, alleviating flaking and peeling.
This flexibility enables Sadolin Superdec to offer up to 8 years’ protection against the elements.
Sadolin Superdec is also selfpriming and undercoating, reducing the need for an extra product on new wood. It also requires little preparation, and can be applied over previously
decorated services.
As the product also offers a solid, paint like finish it is very forgiving and is therefore ideal for use on visually poorer quality timber surfaces, while its opaque qualities can help to hide timber imperfections.
Sharon Smith, Sadolin Brand Manager, said: “We are delighted to be able to launch many of the colours in the Sadolin Superdec range in this new, handy sampling size.

Agrigem advices on herbicide changes
Controlling weeds within the amenity sector is due to get a lot harder for the coming season.
Adjusting to the loss or restrictions of herbicide use is something we have learned to accept, explains Agrigem’s technical sales manager Ollie Wright.
“Important products such as Casaron-G, Timbrel & Tordon are just a few we have seen disappear in recent years,” he continued.
“Various new EU changes mean that many more products will either be withdrawn from sale or have restrictions on their label from this autumn.
“Broadshot & Kaskara will be withdrawn from sale at the end of September and October respectively. This is due to the formulation needing to be changed from an emulsifiable
concentrate to an emulsion oil in water. While product will still be available, it will only be permitted for use on agricultural grassland, leaving a gap in the invasive and scrub weed control market.
“The loss of this powerful mixture of three active ingredients will perhaps pave the way for newer and more effective products such as I-Cade (12g/l aminopyralid and 120g/l triclopyr), although, be aware of the stewardship restrictions with this product.”
Another area of concern for turf professionals is the loss of many of the mecoprop-p products. There were concerns raised after mecoprop-p was detected in milk throughout Europe, and as such nearly all products have lost their registration for grassland, including amenity turf.
“There are a few exceptions to this, such as Turfmaster (19.5g/l dicamba, 245g/l MCPA, 43.3g/l

Hose manufacturer, Copely Developments Ltd, is a certainly on a roll with new hose product launches.
The latest, a premium quality garden hose endorsed by the Royal Horticultural Society, has been developed using ground-breaking technology which allows water to flow continuously, even if the hose becomes kinked, crushed or knotted.
RHS Everflow Garden Hose features patented Evercore technology, unique to Copely Developments – a company with a long, successful heritage in the hose design and manufacturing business.
All hoses have a tendency to kink and become tangled from time to time. But it is this Evercore ‘flow protect’ technology which allows the continuous flow of water in all states, whether knotted or

RHS Everflow is the only garden hose available to feature such revolutionary technology.

Living walls installed at award-winning project
International living wall specialist, ANS Global, has taken part in an award-winning project for UWC Dilijan College in Armenia.
Designed by Tim Flynn Architects in London and Armenia, the project won the Trendsetting Architecture Leadership Award at the International Green Roof Congress earlier this year.
ANS Global supplied 1500m² of planted walls to the school in various shapes and sizes all over the college campus.
Principle Architect Tim Flynn explains: “We selected ANS
Global’s structure as we like the irrigation system and how it is able to capture rainwater. German Landscape Architect, Udo Dagenbach of Glaber & Dagenbach, was also instrumental in plant selection and collaborated extensively on this project.”
The Living Walls ensure that the building remains warm in the winter and cool in summer due to the vegetation used. As the elevations change over time, the local plant life is designed to take over and dominate foreign plants that try to infiltrate as it grows.

Two Hauraton surface drainage systems installed at Maltby Academy School, Rotherham.
Early in 2012 it was decided refurbish the older building at Maltby Academy and build a new open plan business / enterprise centre and sport science block. In addition, the old gymnasium was to be converted into a performing and creative arts facility.
The £10.9 million contract for the re-development was awarded to BAM Construction of Leeds, in June 2012. The site was fully operational by September 2013. Architects for the new buildings were Bond Bryan, Sheffield office.
With the site being quite flat, and the old and new buildings’ surrounded by paved and asphalted surfaces, it was essential rainwater is drained effectively. Two Hauraton channel systems were chosen to drain surface water: RECYFIX® PRO 100 with FIBRETEC® C250 gratings for the asphalted yards and car park and RECYFIX® SLOTTED channels for the paved walkways, these providing an unobtrusive, narrow line of slots in the paved surfaces.

Emperor is a high strength porcelain paving, which has been specifically designed to inspire and create beautiful spaces, both internally and externally.
Manufactured in Italy, Emperor is produced to the highest standards, providing a surface that will require very little maintenance.
Emperor has been modelled on ten natural stones and two woods and is made from natural low lime clays, quartz and felspar which is then formed using intense heat and pressure, similar to the formation of natural stone.
Emperor not only looks good but also offers a range of practical benefits.
It’s hard, non-slip surface makes it hard wearing but also contributes to its ease of cleaning, coupled with its resistance to weather, frost and acid, Emperor is virtually maintenance free.
Emperor is extremely easy to lay and at just 20mm thick, it can be used on a variety of projects including: roof
terraces, balconies, patio areas and even internal spaces.
Due to Emperor’s composition sealing is not required and each panel has conical edges, specifically unique to Emperor.
The conical edges offer two key benefits; once laid, Emperor porcelain paving looks just like natural stone and provides extra stability to each piece, making them more resistant to cracking and helps to prevent the edges being damaged.
Giles Heap, CED’s Managing Director, said: “Although not a natural material like stone or wood, Emperor Porcelain paving is made exclusively from high grade, natural materials and offers, in our opinion the most realistic looking quality substitute for natural stones and woods available today, without the issues often associated with them.
“Using Emperor means you will have no more worries and associated costs about staining, or frost damage, yet it will still retain the most important feature of natural products, a natural look.”
The ten short-listed products will be displayed at The Landscape Show, Battersea, London, 22-23 September 2015. All attendees will be able to vote for the winning product.

IAE takes pole position
IAE, one of the UK’s leading fencing manufacturers based in Stoke on Trent, supplied 7000 metres of spectator protection debris fencing for the British leg of this year inaugural Formula E motor racing championship.
Formula E is a ground breaking FIA single-seater championship and the world’s first fully-electric racing series.
The season began in Beijing in September 2014, ending in London with the Visa London ePriX motorsport event taking place at Battersea Park in June 2015, with the series competing in 10 of the world’s leading cities.

Steelway Fensecure enjoys impressive track record of success
Steelway Fensecure is a leading manufacturer of steel fencing, serving a broad range of customers, from schools, parish councils to large city and metropolitan borough councils.
There continues to be a problem in the fencing market, with customers often unsure how to choose the best solution if their goal is to maximise the fence’s utility and be the most cost effective over time.
It used to be that customers did not have to worry about things like product support, service, safety, and until recently, compliance with British Standards were not even considered as significant issues.
Therefore, the difference between competing offerings was pretty straightforward. Customers either bought the solution with the cheapest price or from whoever they liked the best at the time.
However, as copycats continue to spring up with fancy brochures and “me too” product
messages, without the ability to deliver either a quality product or service, it has become very difficult for customers to discern the differences between real value and what I might term as marketing smoke and mirrors.
At Steelway Fensecure, the focus is on working with customers, not just to help them understand our range and proposals.
The company takes a proactive approach to understand the
customer’s specific goals and then customise a solution for what is often a major expenditure against budgets in a time of austerity.

BeA invests into continued service excellence
BeA - the manufacturer of fastening tools and consumables for the fencing sector - has made a signifi cant investment to meet growing demand for its products and to maintain a reputation for the highest levels of service and support.
The business has recently acquired additional warehousing at its Woodmansey, East Yorkshire site.
The new facility will be used to increase both the depth and breadth of the company’s stockholding and to ensure continued, good ex stock availability across BeA’s range.
Commenting, John Mercer, managing director at BeA (UK), says: “As a business, BeA offers high quality products that include tools and consumables employed across a wide range of sectors. However, we’ve always taken the view that products alone
are only ever part of the best solution and that service, support and expert advice are all equally important.”
Refl ecting this belief in service excellence, BeA already operates a nationwide team of fi eld-based technical sales managers.
These individuals adopt a consultative approach and aim to offer customers solutions that not only meet their needs but that also add value – whether that’s through increased margins, improved efficiency, greater productivity or many other benefi ts.
The company also operates a team of field-based support engineers. These technical specialists are equipped with vehicles customised to double as mobile workshops.
They can service and carry out planned preventative
maintenance on BeA tools as well as help customers reduce downtime in the unlikely event of emergency repairs being required.
BeA believes the investment into the new warehousing will add to these key service differentiators. Concluding, John Mercer adds: “BeA prides itself on the strength and longevity of its customer relationships and a high proportion of our customer base has worked with us for many years and even decades.
“Investing into additional warehousing will help us to build on that track record. It will ensure we can continue to offer customers across the UK the fastening products they need, when they need them whilst our own business expands.”
BeA EnquiryZaun gates secure LPCB security ratings
Zaun has achieved security ratings to LPS 1175 for a number of its pedestrian and vehicular swing gates from the Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB), as tested by the Buildings Research Establishment (BRE).
The perimeter systems manufacturer’ has secured an SR1 rating for both Duo8 and HiSec 358 gates – and an SR2 rating for gates clad with HiSec Super10 mesh.
The gates have all earned LPCB certifi cates and been entered into the Red Book for LPS 1175: Issue 7.
Designers have added an overclip and special shear-drive bolt at the top and bottom of the mounting post of Zaun’s standard Duo8 gate to give it its SR1 rating.
61
It has used a similar principle with its HiSec 358 gate, by adding a clamp bar at the side of the gate post with a through-bolt and stainless steel fi xings.
The SR2 gate is fi tted with Zaun’s Super10 mesh into the HiSec gate. All three are supplied with an SR-rated padlock as standard.
To maintain accreditation and a listing in the LPCB Red Book (www.redbooklive.com), manufacturers must regularly demonstrate to independent auditors that they are producing products consistent with those tested. This gives the customer the guarantee that they are getting a secure and quality product.
Products approved by LPCB are rigorously tested for resistance to deliberate attack and play an important role in protecting people and property against
physical attack, burglary, vandalism and terrorism.
LPS 1175 specifi cally covers the approval and listing of intruder resistant building components, strongpoints, security enclosures and free-standing barriers.
BRE Physical Security
Certifi cation Scheme Manager
Richard Flint said: “The threat to organisations from commercial crime and terrorism is diverse in both geography and levels of skill involved; it is persistent and requires appropriate measures to deter criminals and terrorists.
Early detection backed up by effective physical security that
provides a suitable delay while the response arrives reduces the likelihood of criminal acts being committed.
This is supported by research and initiatives and in the UK, LPCB works closely with security equipment specifi ers, insurers, government, police, and end users to develop methods by which the quality of product performance and product reliability can be assessed.“

Dennis FT510 helps club maintain its busy schedule
In 2014, St Austell Bowling Club in Cornwall graced over 3,000 bowlers.
With such an inundated fixture list, only the finest turf maintenance machinery would make this possible and the Dennis FT510 ensured that the reputable bowling club could keep to their busy schedule.
The club’s busy schedule is testament to its dedication to the sport and club secretary, Peter Heayns, believes that it is necessary in order to sustain a successful bowling club.
Peter, who looks after the green with fellow members, Perry and
Steve Pope, uses a range of SISIS turf maintenance equipment alongside the Dennis FT510 mower; of which he was full of praise for.
“The actual operation of the FT510 is excellent and I just love the simplicity of it. I also like the fact that it’s so easy to clean,” he said. “You can just take the cover off and blow all the grass out –it’s brilliant.
“The FT510’s best feature is the interchangeable cassette system; it gives you the ability to easily change them and do different tasks in a very short time.”

The AFT Trenchers 45 and AFT Wizz Wheel are set to install a full drainage scheme in the 96-yearold greens at Worcestershire Golf Club, as well as playing a vital part in the installation of a new irrigation system.
It is the primary task of Steven Lloyd, who took over his current role as course manager in October last year, to address the issue of drainage and find a solution to flooding which had closed five greens for four months the previous winter. His experience dealing with drainage issues at his former club will stand him in good stead.
Mindful of the tradition and history of the club, Steve is determined to protect the integrity of the course during any major works. So Steve knew straight away the AFT machines
were the ideal choice for the task as they had been used by a contractor on his previous course and had impressed him then.
He said: “It’s the versatility of the machines that I like. We will use both attachments so we can do five inch wide trenches or 50mm slits with it, so it covers everything that we want.
“In the long term we are planning to install a new irrigation system so we will use it for all the pipe work as well.”
The work is planned to start at the beginning of October once the golf season has passed with minimum disruption expected whilst the work on the greens takes place.

The extensive range of Dakota Top Dressers from Campey Turf Care Systems has mounted models suitable for all the major makes of trucksters including Jacobs, Toro and John Deere Pro Gators.
The towed range can be used with tractors from 20hp for the Dakota 410 with Ultra Trac tyres to a minimum of 40hp for the larger capacity Dakota 440 with 4 x 20” Supa Trac tyres with its 1.78m wide hopper.
All of the Dakota Top Dressers are extremely versatile and will deliver wet and dry material on any sports surface with consistent accuracy of application. This is because of the easy calibration system on the vehicle mounted control panel, which requires no manual adjustment of the dual spinner discharge system.
Majella Smyth, head groundsman at the Dublin Aviva Stadium has a Dakota 410 Turf Tender which he uses to apply sand. “Although not the largest model available for a pitch of this size, we chose the Dakota 410 turf tender for good reason,” explains Majella.
“At one end of the stadium we have quite a steep run-off. A large spreader would need to turn on the pitch itself to ensure total coverage when spreading sand. The 410 is a smaller, lighter machine which is more manoeuvrable and won’t cause any compaction on the turf.
“It is great little machine, it still has the same simple calibration system and the spread pattern is so accurate there is no wastage.”
Innovation is key to success of Green Shark
For tractors of 1,000kg plus, the Green Shark flail hedge cutter range, which is available from Weaving Machinery, will trim hedges and mow ditches with its parallel action articulated arm.

Berthoud batterypowered pro sprayer offers consistent performance
knapsack power sprayer uses a faster-charging battery that also trims a significant amount of weight off the operator’s back.
Powered pump drive in place of manual operation makes the Berthoud Vermorel 3000 Electric less tiring to use over long periods, while the electronic pressure control provides accurate and consistent spraying performance, with fast spray shut-off and self-calibration among its other features.
Weighing 6.2kg complete with battery, the ‘3000’ is more than 1.5kg lighter than its predecessor, which can only enhance the sprayer’s reputation as one of the most comfortable and secure battery-powered knapsack units available.
An ergonomic frame and harness similar to that used on top-end rucksacks is the key to comfortable use of all models in the Berthoud Vermorel range. Air can circulate between the sprayer and operator’s back, while support pads and wide padded shoulder and waist straps hold the sprayer securely in place.
The new Vermorel 3000 Electric has a light weight lithium-ion battery housed neatly beneath its 18-litre translucent tank. Unlike a conventional battery, it charges faster and provides consistent performance until fully discharged rather than gradually tailing off.
Award-winning housebuilder heralds
JCB’s smallest loadall
The brand new 516-40 Loadall –the most compact telehandler in the JCB range – is proving a real hit with a UK housebuilder.
Stratford-upon-Avon-based Johnson & Johnson, has taken delivery of one of the first of the newly introduced compact telehandlers since the model went into production and has used it on a series of luxury housebuilding sites in the Midlands.
Just 1.56m wide and 1.8m high, the JCB 516-40 is powered by a 2.2-litre JCB Diesel by Kohler engine, producing 49hp (36.6 kW) of power. With permanent all-wheel drive and four-wheel steering, the 516-40 offers a turning radius of just 2.8m. A lift capacity of 1.6 tonnes and a maximum lift height of 4m, makes for a powerful performer on house building and general construction sites.
The 516-40 also features an offset single-spine chassis and
individual hydraulic wheel motor drive system, that delivers the overall size and agility of a skid steer loader, with the greater lift capacity and reach of a telescopic handler. An improved hydrostatic drive and upgraded hydraulic lift components deliver additional capacity and an impressive working envelope for such a compact machine.
The improved hydrostatic transmission delivers increased pushing power and higher travel speeds in both low and high travel ranges. A constantflow hydraulic option can be used to power rotary sweeper brushes and other attachments, independent of travel speed. A single proportional joystick controls all boom and auxiliary hydraulic functions for ease of operation.
JCB Enquiry 76Little Wonder ProVac is an event in itself
Clearing up litter after events, around amenity areas and sports venues can be a time- consuming and costly task.
The Little Wonder self-propelled ProVac SP litter and leaf vacuum will make a big impact on the process, claiming as it does to be 30% faster than its nearest competitor.
Superior airflow created by the powerful Honda 9hp GX270 engine creates the vacuum to fill the debris bag without loss of suction. As it is self-propelled, it will work at speed, up to 4.2mph/6.76km forwards and 1.8mph/2.0km in reverse, with far less fatigue for the operator.
With the automatically adjustable nozzle height and the capacity to bag 180 litres of litter, bottles and cans it will swallow post event debris in a flash and of course take the drudgery out of collecting autumn leaves in parks and estates.
The ProVac SP is highly manoeuvrable with its front wheel swivel to negotiate obstacles and the low 40” unit height makes for clear visibility and safer operating. With the power of a hurricane sucking up the rubbish there’s a safety windshield to divert dust to ground level and for operator comfort the arched paddle handle will suit users of most heights,
offering a suitable operating position.
A simple ‘toe tap’ dump valve allows the ProVac SP to free wheel and excellent traction is assured with heavy-duty tread on
the rear tyres to stay on course over dry and wet grass, slopes, concrete and tarmac.

ECHO Enquiry 93Bosch has unveiled the environmentally friendly, professional, battery powered brush-cutters and line trimmers.
By using highly efficient battery systems and eliminating servicing costs, the tools effectively pay for themselves in less than three years of regular use.
For professional gardeners using the new Bosch cordless garden tools for up to four hours per working day, the fuel savings and lack of servicing costs would mean that the switch from petrol to electric would save around £520 per year. Regardless of usage patterns, the annual energy cost of battery versus petrol tools is well below 10%.
The British-built products allow for all-day working thanks to low noise and low vibration levels
produced by the weatherproof high performance batteries.
The battery brush cutters are ideal for use in noise sensitive areas thanks to the low noise cutting blade and line. In comparison to a conventional petrol brush cutter, the Bosch Professional is at least five times quieter.
The batteries, which can be used in both the brush-cutters and the new professional mower range, take just 42 minutes to recharge, providing enough power to mow an area equivalent to an entire football pitch.
The new professional models are weatherproof and produce significantly lower noise than their petrol alternatives.

The warranty on Echo chainsaws is two years in professional use. Power increase
The GreenMech QuadTrak 160 is a tracked 160mm chipper that features a 270deg turntable and tilt bed system, offering stability
when working on slopes up to 30deg. Powered by a 34hp Kubota turbo-charged diesel engine, the chipper uses twin vertical feed rollers and a large 160mm x 230mm letterbox opening to crush difficult branches and woody brash.
Ground clearance of 240mm ensures easy travel over unknown terrain.
The chipper comes with the option of a bespoke trailer, on which the QuadTrak 160 can be used whilst still mounted, giving the benefits of a tracked and trailed machine in one package.
The Carlton SP7015 TRX stump grinder supplied by Orange Plant is truly a ‚go anywhere do everything‘ machine. The SP7015 TRX is a 66hp Kubota diesel powered tracked machine that features a wireless remote control, four-speed ground drive system, traction control and telescoping tracks. It can cut to 340mm below and 1060mm
above ground with a cutting arc of 1780mm. The stump grinder weighs in at 2460kg for easy transport on a truck or trailer.
Ryetec has become known in recent years for the supply of KTS timber trailers and cranes, described by the company as well-built and high performance equipment at very competitive prices. In response to customer demand, KTS has launched a new 13 tonne trailer with a ladder frame construction and generous 3.4m³ capacity, thanks to a new wider chassis, slide out rear extension and redesigned stakes.
With five bolsters and 10 stakes the new trailer can carry most cut lengths of timber and can be combined with the KTS 6.7 or 7.5 metre reach demountable forestry cranes with various control options and tractor hydraulic or PTO driven systems. The trailer can also be fitted with hydraulic or air brakes and even driven wheels for the wettest conditions.
In a bid to make the most of large diameter timber which is often cheaper than more regular material, Ryetec has introduced its Contractor heavy duty horizontal log splitters, capable of splitting material up to 3.5 metres long in to four or six pieces in one stroke.
Ryetec’s Mark Harrison explains: “These machines are can be specified with remote control and instantly make larger, more awkward pieces of timber easier to deal with, either through a firewood processor or chipper for biomass material.”
“One contractor, Wye Valley Firewood in Wales has purchased the 40 tonne splitting version both to solve a problem in his own firewood business but also to offer a contracting service. This specially-built machine can easily be transported behind a tractor to site and deal with large timber on customers’ premises and he has been over whelmed
by demand for this unique machine.”
With bulk firewood in increasing demand, and prices rising, the Fuelwood Splitta 400 is perfect money generating opportunity for Arb contractors or local authorities producing a significant volume of timber waste, says the company.
Unlike more manual firewood production methods, the Splitta 400 produces the consistency of firewood size that the growing woodfuel market requires. This high speed commercial machine converts timber rounds of up to 40cm (16in) diameter into either 20cm (8in) or 25cm (10in) or 33cm (13in) length logs or kindling. It can produce firewood at up to 12m3 per hour or kindling up to 2.7m3 per hour.
Switching from firewood to kindling takes only seconds.
With power options of 415 volt three-phase electric, PTO driven
or hydraulic supply, this machine can be specified to operate in different locations indoor to suit individual customer needs. It is fully guarded to ensure operator safety, yet the operation of the machine can be clearly observed.
Durable and adaptable Clearing areas of dense vegetation and heavy scrub in woodland is the job for a rotary slasher, suggests Wessex Machinery. The Scrubmaster features heavy gauge steel plate construction and a high performance drive system, with the choice of a blade assembly with four heavy-duty reversible blades mounted on the large hardened steel square plate, delivering more than 2000 one tonne impact cuts a minute.
In areas where there are tree stumps and rocks, blades can be swapped for three high tensile chains on a circular boss. This will lacerate woody and fibrous scrub growth and accelerate its breakdown.
Drive is transmitted via a friction plate clutch to the gearbox with hardened, bevel gears running in an oil bath for smooth operation. The cutter assembly is welded on a tapered hub which locks onto the gearbox output shaft.
The Scrubmaster also has adjustable side skids with replaceable wear shoes and the skids are positioned so the working width is marginally less than the overall width, allowing cutting close to stumps and trees in plantations.
A fully floating headstock allows the slasher to be dragged across rough ground with minimal stress to the frame of the machine and a heavy galvanised chain lifts it out of work; an optional rear castoring wheel assembly avoids the need to lift it when manoeuvring between trees. The Wessex Scrubmaster also has heavy gauge steel tailplates to retain debris and encourage thorough mulching.

Versatile chipper ticks the boxes
When Wolverhampton City Council looked to purchase two new chippers for their Arboricultural Services they had a certain criteria in mindthey were looking for a tracked model that had a turntable. Three brands were demonstrated but the GreenMech QuadTrak 160 stood out and won the day - helped by the fact that it was the only one that came with a bespoke trailer.
Richard Johnson, Arboricultural Officer for Highways and Leisure at Wolverhampton City Council, was in charge of the team that settled on the GreenMech QuadTraks and trailers. “We didn’t want something just tracked, that could only be used on the leisure land, we wanted something that could be used universally. One of our subcontractors Acorn Tree Services uses GreenMech chippers so we were familiar with the brand”, says Richard.
“The benefit of the GreenMech model is that it acts like a standard chipper when it’s on the trailer, but once off and on the tracks it can be used anywhere.
In woodland areas or spaces with restricted access tracked is best because you can chip straight into the woodland rather than into an HGV wagon, which could get stuck in wooded areas.”
Team Leader Paul Watton uses the QuadTraks on a daily basis. “I was familiar with GreenMech chippers and had used their machines a couple of times before. The build quality of the QuadTrak is very good and so far we haven’t had any problems with either of the machines. We purchased them around 12 months ago and only changed the blades for the first time at the end of May this year. Looking after the blades is really the only bit of maintenance needed so we take care when working on the roadside to not sweep what’s left and put it through the chipper –the quickest way to damage the blades!”
Having their own machines suits all of the council‘s needs and means they have been able to develop a programme consisting of a cyclical highways scheme and a reactionary call out scheme.
Mitox is same product with a new name
The Japanese-made Mitox represents a formidable range of commercial brushcutters.
The new Mitox machines, formerly Kawasaki, still boast Kawasaki engines and quality Japanese manufacture, yet at lower prices in 2015 than you would have paid for the equivalent Kawasaki brushcutter in 2014.
Add to this the comprehensive 3-year commercial warranty (5-years domestic) and you can easily see why Mitox, already one of the fastest growing garden machinery brands, has staked its claim on becoming a leader in landscaping, groundscare, amenity and forestry. To further stamp this mark there will also be other products in the professional range to come.
At the top end of the brushcutter range is the Mitox heavy-duty 5300UK PRO for the professional
who is using a brushcutter all day in harsh surroundings.
Start with the Mitox 2700LK PRO which offers a commercial grade, lightweight, brushcutter with low noise, low vibration, ideal balance and easy-start for lawn and garden maintenance. There are four more machines to choose from to cover garden, intermediate and heavy duty use.

Makita pole saw is top of the tree extended. The Makita fourstroke engine has lots of torque, it starts first time, every time, and has never missed a beat. It’s so quiet it’s a pleasure to use, and the fuel consumption is so good you sometimes hope it will stop so you can have a break!“
Jaime Bray has run his own business, Treetop Arboriculture in Coventry, for 17 years providing a tree maintenance and consultancy service across the Midlands. He’s been involved in tree work for more than 20 years and is a Trustee of the Arboricultural Association and Chairman of the Arborists’ Working Group that has overseen the creation of R2 Register of Tree Work Operatives.
Jaime uses the Makita telescopic pole chainsaw in his daily tasks of tree maintenance, ornamental pruning and crown lifting, and for pruning trees away from a client’s property. “In boundary disputes, where there is a problem with access to an adjacent property, the full reach of the Makita pole saw at 3.9 metres extended is a blessing. Overhanging vegetation can be reached with ease, ensuring that trespass does not occur on neighbouring property,“ he explains.
“The balance of this pole saw is excellent, even when fully
“The four-stroke gives very minimal vibrations through the saw and the telescopic tubes have sufficient wall thickness and a sturdy clamp so there is little flexing. It’s this feature that enables the operator to prune branches accurately. It doesn’t become excessively tip heavy when held at arm’s length even when fully extended. There is nothing to hinder its use.”
Weighing just 7.2kg, the Makita EY2650H telescopic pole saw extends from 2.7m to 3.9m, is powered by the 25.4cc Makita MM4 four-stroke engine with pressurised oil system producing 1.03hp. The 255mm/10in bar carries 3/8in pitch, 0.050in gauge chain with a 0.12 litre chain oil tank.
Services of Rickmansworth has taken its business to a new level with the recent purchase of a Fuelwood Splitta 400 automatic firewood processing machine.
Cities like London have seen a big increase in wood burning stove ownership in recent years due to the availability of clean burn stoves, which means even residences in many ‘smokeless zones’ are able to enjoy a real fire.
Artemis initially sampled their target market before investing in higher volume firewood production, by first investing in an AMR log splitter from Fuelwood.
This enabled them to create enough firewood in a day to
make it cost effective, and it generated a sufficient volume of firewood to make marketing and testing the viability of the service worthwhile.
The test marketing proved successful and Artemis then set out a plan to move into higher volume production. Ultimately, they wanted the ability to be able to convert as much of the 2000 cubic metres of timber they collect from both domestic and commercial tree surgery each year, into valuable firewood.
After much market research, Artemis decided on buying a Fuelwood Splitta 400 firewood processor. This automated firewood machine is capable of producing up to 12.0 solid m3/ hr, so is a huge step up in volume from a manual log splitter
New addition to range
Arbortec forestwear have just announced a forthcoming addition to their popular, high performing range of Scafell chainsaw boots.
The new, Class 2 Scafell lite, is set to land this Autumn for October delivery. It encompasses all the features of the Scafell boot, including exceptional design and outstanding performance, along with a new lightweight sole and chainsaw blocking material providing one of the lightest Class 2 boot on the Market.
Arbortec have taken this opportunity to address the issue of anti-perforation midsole protection. This feature is often overlooked in the lighter weight chainsaw footwear market, but is an extremely important requirement of H&S officers in utility companies and other professional organisations.
The Scafell lite is available in 3 colours, the vintage Scafell Green, electric blue and classic black.
and is a serious commercial proposition. With seasoned or kiln dried firewood selling at around £100 +VAT per cubic metre delivered, it becomes a very viable business.
The demand for firewood is growing steadily year on year as more and more domestic homes install wood burning fires and stoves. Over 175,000
Tool carrier takes on all tasks
A Barnsley based company specialising in the eradication of Japanese knotweed has recently taken delivery of an Avant 745 compact tool carrier to tackle a wide variety of tasks.
Nimrod Environmental, established in 2007 by Daniel Kaye, spends approximately 60% of its time tackling invasive weeds on a nationwide basis using a variety of methods from chemical treatment to complete excavation and removal to landfill. This work is carried out not only at domestic properties but also on behalf of developers, local authorities and rail companies.
Commenting on his choice of Avant, Daniel says: “I was looking for a yard machine that could also be easily towed to sites behind our truck and, in my opinion, the 745 model offered the best combination of compact size, traction and overall performance to suit the services we offer which also include tree surgery, site clearance and commercial landscaping.”
wood burners were installed in houses throughout the UK last year, the majority being new installations to replace gas fires.
Moving into the commercial production of firewood makes huge commercial sense, especially so if a large amount of the timber is being generated free through tree surgery, suggests Fuelwood.
Supplied by the local Avant dealer, Britcom of Market Weighton, the 745 model has been delivered complete with three buckets, a flail mower, tree shear and a set of pallet forks and further attachments are to be added in the future to maximise the machine’s versatility. The 1400kg lift capacity 745 is
powered by a Kubota fourcylinder diesel engine developing 49hp, driving through an hydrostatic transmission which provides a top speed of 15kph. The all-wheel drive, articulated machine is just 1350 mm wide and features a telescopic boom and self-levelling system as standard.
Orange is the colour of the build quality,” said Wayne. “Of course the price came into it, but the Kubota engine and the Orange Plant back-up service clinched it.” They settled on the Carlton 7015TRX stump grinder in orange to match all their other machinery.
WSH Services Ltd of Leeds believe in the power of ‘Orange’ – all their machinery to be painted orange and Orange Plant to supply them! The company deals with tree clearance, railway/highway/ site clearance, tree felling and pruning, local authority work and all commercial kinds of tree work. To do that their fleet of machines has to cover all aspects – especially their choice of stump grinder.
Wayne Hargreaves explains, “We used to have a Tractor PTO stump grinder for site clearance work. As work began to get further and further spread out around the country we decided to look at alternatives, in particular the Carlton 7015TRX Stump Grinder. We had previously hired Carltons so we were familiar with the brand, but we decided on the these machines primarily because
Although it’s a large machine, WSH Services can load the stump grinder onto their low loader and move it around the country easily.
Wayne praises the remote control that Carlton provides with the machine, “The Carlton remote control is a lot more compact and easier to use than others,” he says, “the wear-ability of the wheel is also impressive.”
“We also have a Carlton 2012TRX chipper that is used on large site clearance and railway projects.”

The future’s Orange for WSH Services
WSH Services Ltd of Leeds believe in the power of ‘Orange’ – all their machinery to be painted orange and Orange Plant to supply them.
As work began to get further and further spread out around the country we decided to look at alternatives, in particular the Carlton 7015TRX Stump Grinder, so that it was easier to transport using our low-loader.”
They settled on the Carlton 7015TRX stump grinder in
orange (naturally) to match all their other machinery. “We also have a Carlton 2012TRX chipper that is used on large site clearance and railway projects,” he added.
Also in their fleet is a GreenMech Arborist 150 for general chipping work and a GreenMech 19-28 SafeTrak chipper for railway work – all in Orange!
