New guide to BIM for landscaping is published
BIM for Landscape is the first book of its kind to focus on the implementation of Building Information Modelling (BIM) processes in landscape and the external environment.
BIM is a process that will model all data relating to the design, costs and sustainability of a project from design through construction and operation. It will bring the practice of simulation and prototyping for the first time into landscape architecture, saving money and leading ultimately to better designs.
The UK is a world leader in this field and the key objective is a 20% reduction in capital costs from the construction and operation of the built environment. It heralds a new chapter in inter-disciplinary relationships.
‘BIM for landscape’ will not be the Holy Grail to deliver BIM but will signpost the key BIM documents, often referred to as the Pillars of BIM, and discuss what landscape practices need to consider to become BIM compliant. It is intended to prepare practitioners and landscape architecture practices to meet the challenges and benefit from the rewards of working with BIM. It has been designed in three sections; Introduction and how to prepare for BIM; BIM Implementation and technological aspects of BIM.
Mike Shilton, chair of Landscape Institute’s BIM working group, said: “By publishing ‘BIM for Landscape’ the Landscape Institute is trying to help landscape architecture practices make an

informed business decision as to whether they should adopt BIM or not. Many practices may seek a competitive edge by proactively implementing BIM but for others, they will need to review whether this is relevant to them. Hopefully, the book will help their decision making process.
“Conversion to BIM enabled platforms from current practices may incur additional expenses and training but if a competitor is delivering projects more efficiently, on time and to budget by implementing BIM processes, and clients’ are achieving the targeted 20% savings BIM can deliver, it may become more difficult for you to compete.”

Theme parks turn to John Deere
John Deere has struck fleet deals with Thorpe Park Resort and Chessington World of Adventures Resort.
The deal at Thorpe Park brings the working relationship between the two businesses into its 23rd year, while it is the first time John Deere will work with the other Surrey-based attraction.
Thorpe Park Resort is one of the country’s oldest customers of John Deere’s Gator utility vehicle, which features strongly once more in the Resort’s latest three-year grounds equipment fleet renewal deal.
The upgraded, 14-strong fleet now includes a 1580 front rotary mower, 5100M 100hp utility tractor,
4066R compact tractor plus front loader, 3038R compact tractor and 10 Gator utility vehicles: two XUV 855D S4s, three HPX 4x4s (all diesel), three TE electric and two TS 4x2 petrol models. All the machines feature John Deere’s PowerGard maintenance only warranty cover and Datatag theft protection on the tractors.
“The quieter TE electric Gators are especially useful due to the daily bird counts and conservation work that take place here at Thorpe Park Resort,” said senior landscape and conservation manager Ian Stanbridge.
At Chessington, the fleet includes three HPX 4x4 Gator utility vehicles, a 1550 front rotary
mower with 72in deck and a 4066R compact tractor with H180 front loader. Additional ancillary equipment includes a JCB digger, a GreenMech

Welcome...
What do you know about BIM? More importantly, do you need to know anything about BIM?
Both timely questions given the publication of the Landscape Institute’s guide on what exactly Building Information Modelling is and why it is important.
The simple answer to the second question is yes, you should get up to speed on what BIM is. It is already having a significant impact for public sector projects in the architectural and building products industry and it will become increasingly relevant to those working within landscaping.
As Noel Farrer, President of the Landscape Institute, said of the new book: “It will be a helpful resource, not only for landscape practitioners but also for fellow professional in related fields starting to understand the application of BIM to landscape works. This will provide an invaluable early guide to elements of good practice.”
It is better to understand such initiatives at an early stage than have to play catch-up further down the line and risk being left behind.
This month we carry a diverse range of products and put the spotlight on important areas in the landscape and amenity sectors. These include increasingly popular and important vehicles such as ATVs, UTVs and work trucks, as well as some of the industry’s traditional tools in grass cutting machinery.
We also take a look at soft landscaping, along with our regular round-up of products and services, innovation and news from across sections of the industry.
And as the country waits for the summer weather to start kicking in, thoughts are already beginning to turn to Birmingham in November and SALTEX 2016 at the NEC. A busy few months lie ahead for us all, but perhaps spare some time to learn a bit about BIM?

The competition was run to mark Kärcher’s launch of its new Park and City product line. Kärcher’s Leaf Blower (LB 850 Bp) and Chainsaw (CS 330 Bp) are the first of a new suite of handheld power tools for municipal
maintenance from the renowned German manufacturer.
Daryl has chosen the Kärcher LB 850 battery-powered leaf blower. The high-output, lightweight blower has a choice of three power
settings - high, low and boost - and is ideal for shifting debris, leaves and cuttings. It delivers 148km/h air speed at full power yet produces only 80 db LpA noise output.
Organisers of SALTEX 2016, which is being held on 2 and 3 November at the NEC, Birmingham, have launched a new photo competition in which one winner will receive two VIP tickets to SALTEX and the IOG Industry Awards, PLUS overnight accommodation.
The competition is open to everyone – grounds teams, greenkeepers, gardeners, park keepers, horticulturalists – it doesn’t matter who sends the photos in as there are no entry requirements.
It might be a photo of a great project, a lake like no other, a beautifully crafted landscape garden, a unique pitch pattern, or maybe a putting green as picturesque as a postcard – it can be anything at all, just as long as it
is relevant to the industry. Those entering the competition are also welcome to include themselves in the shot as it allows everyone to see the person behind the photo.
Selected by a SALTEX judging panel, each month one picture will be selected as the monthly winner. The monthly winning photos will then all compete against each other in which only one can be victorious. A selection of the best pictures will also decorate the halls of SALTEX 2016.
Simply send your pics via Twitter by including the SALTEX Twitter handle @IOG_SALTEX and the hashtag #MyOffice. Alternatively send your pictures to chris. bennett@fusion-media.eu.

Queen’s honour for borough council parks manager
Rugby Borough Council’s parks and grounds manager has been honoured in the Queen’s 90th birthday honours list, receiving an MBE for his work to improve the quality of parks across the country.
Chris Worman, who is 48 and originally from Leicester, has been a volunteer for the Green Flag awards for the past 20 years, visiting and critiquing parks and open spaces in his own time.
His days off from managing Rugby’s parks, including the flagship Caldecott Park in Rugby town centre, have seen him visiting and judging parks across the UK, Jersey, New
York and Abu Dabhi - and in 2012 the Queen’s private garden at Buckingham Palace.
Worman said: “I have been passionate about parks and green spaces for as long as I can remember. When I left school, I knew I wanted to always work outdoors and at 16 years of age ended up working on my local park in Leicester where I had played as a child.
“During the late eighties and early nighties I started to witness a decline in the standard of our parks so when the Green Flag Awards came along I jumped at the chance to invest some of my own time as a judge.
“Green Flag parks all have a detailed management plan, complete with a sustainable vision for the park and details of how this is to be delivered. This has resulted in parks becoming more resident focused, delivering what local people want.”
Whilst judging parks he has seen new ideas that have since featured in Rugby, including areas of insect friendly wildflower planting, natural play features, parkour and skater friendly features, community herb gardens and most recently, bee hives.

Policymakers threaten UK children’s right to play
The latest report by the Committee on the Rights of the Child paints a damning picture of respect for children’s rights by UK law and policy makers, including the right to play.
The Committee monitors implementation of the UN’s Convention on the Rights of the Child by ratifying governments. Its latest report highlights serious concerns about the impact of UK government austerity measures on ‘children’s enjoyment of their rights’, citing children from disadvantaged situations as being ‘disproportionately affected’.
The continued lack of measures to address ‘intolerance of childhood’ is slammed by the Committee, which raises deep concerns that children’s views are not being heard by those developing policies that impact children’s lives.
Children’s right to play is wholly undermined, the report says, by:
• The government’s withdrawal of a play policy for England;
• Insufficient provision of spaces and facilities for play and leisure, particularly those accessible to children with disabilities or from disadvantaged communities;
• A lack of public spaces where teenagers can socialise;
• The underfunding of play and leisure policies in the devolved nations.
The Committee reserves praise for the Welsh government for its adoption of a play policy and integration of ‘children’s right to play systematically in relevant legislation and other relevant policies’.
API Chair Mark Hardy says: “The committee’s intense scrutiny of UK government
commitment to honour the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child makes for gloomy reading. Its latest report is a damning reflection of the lack of priority given to children’s livesparticularly those that most need state support - by policymakers. If there was ever a chance to make good on the failings of protecting children’s right to play highlighted in this report, it is with the government’s forthcoming national strategy on obesity. Without high quality places for children in every community to play, there is little opportunity for them to be physically active.”
The Association of Play Industries (API) campaigns at the highest levels for policy recognition of the value and benefits of play.

Sport figures reveal an extra 340,000 getting active
New figures from Sport England’s Active People Survey show that 15.83 million people over the age of 16 played sport in the last year.
That’s a return to the level seen after the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. And it equates to 1.75 million more than when London won the right to host the Games.
While 81,900 more men are playing sport, the overall increase is largely because more women are getting active, accounting for over 75 per cent of the increase.
The gender gap in sport has therefore reduced slightly, to 1.6 million.
Jennie Price, chief executive of Sport England, said: “These figures are encouraging, especially the significant increase in the number of women playing sport and being active every week.”
However there has been a small reduction in the number of disabled people playing sport, down 2,400 in the last year to 1.56 million.
Mobilane launches interior living wall research project
Mobilane, the leading supplier of living systems for exterior and interior use, has partnered with the University of Greenwich Green Roofs & Living Walls Centre on a year-long research project that explores and measures the health and wellbeing effects of interior living walls and other similar systems in a classroom environment.
Mobilane LiveDivider and LivePicture systems, which use the same cassette technology as the LivePanel living wall system, have been installed in Windrush Primary School and Royal Greenwich University Technical College, both of which are within the Royal Borough of Greenwich. The big idea behind the installations is to monitor and assess the effects of the living walls on students.
As Dr Benz Kotzen and Shelley Mosco of the Department of Architecture and Landscape, University of Greenwich explain: “Children and students are especially sensitive to indoor air quality problems that may be alleviated through the use of plants, and because their performance and behaviour during study is so closely monitored and recorded, school and college classrooms provide an ideal testing ground.
“The research will build on previous studies which have shown that plants provide an effective method of regulating environmental conditions within buildings by improving air quality through the removal of impurities or through the increase of humidity, temperature control and abatement of noise. Indoor plants have also been shown to result
in an increase in performance and creativity of employees and students, and to reduce levels of aggression and stress.
“A scientific investigation of this type of installation has the potential added value of incorporating the research process and results into the educational curriculum in science, biology, chemistry and maths. The students and staff will be tasked with maintaining the systems and daily collection of temperature, humidity and other data.”
The Mobilane LiveDividers and LivePictures have been installed in a library and one classroom, and the grades and behaviour of the students using those classrooms will be monitored over the course of the summer term in order to see whether there is a significant improvement compared with the period before the wall was installed. It is intended that the walls will be reintroduced in the new school year to collect more data.
The living systems have been installed by Darren Stobbart of The Plantman, who described the initial response by staff as extremely positive.
“The staff at both the school and college were clearly delighted with the systems and keen to help with the research programme,” he said.
“The children at Windrush Primary School will certainly benefit from a better understanding of plants and their role in air purification, so there are additional benefits beyond the research outcomes.”

Guaranteed microdochium patch control
A new fungicide programme has been launched by Bayer for complete control of microdochium patch, more commonly referred to as Fusarium.
Microdochium patch is one of the most damaging and disfiguring fungal diseases to attack turf. It occurs in over 90% of golf courses in the UK to some extent during the year.
Good management techniques can go a long way towards minimising the effect of this disease but historically, the number of guaranteed full season control programmes have been limited.
Now, with the launch of the microdochium patch programme, full control of the infection with a planned approach is assured for the first time.
And according to Neil Pettican from the Bayer Turf Solutions
Team, the programme has been specifically developed to guarantee control during the months of September to December.
Chemistry should be used to complement cultural and biological controls, as part of an integrated approach, Neil believes that the new microdochium control programme is a vital preventative measure.
The preventative treatment package ensures rotation of three different chemical groups and this makes certain that resistance management is maximised. Golf National in five-year deal for Jacobsen products

Zaun to make Apex railings
An intriguing collaboration has brought steel fencing and railing manufacturer Zaun together with Top Security Fencing’s innovative railless system.
Zaun is to manufacture the patented Apex weldless railing system in its state-of-theart factory and market it in partnership with Top Security. Zaun’s new tube laser cutter is ideal for providing the neat clean holes in the horizontal rails through which the vertical tubes are dropped then ‘expanded’ with a special tool to ‘lock’ them into
the frame. A new development of the system allows the horizontal panels, which are typically 2 or 2.4m high, to be raked.

Niall Gibb is not the only local government Head Groundsman who is increasingly faced by the conundrum of a growing workload and reduced budgets.
Based just outside Southampton, Niall and his team of four are charged with maintaining a range of Fawley Parish Council sports facilities at a number of sites that are regularly/heavily used. Golf centre boosts profits with Huxley
Portsmouth Golf Centre is bucking the trend when it comes to attracting new golfers, boosting profits at the same time.
The South Coast based golf hub has recorded an 11% uplift in lesson income and improved sales through its pro shop in the first four months of 2016. Owner Terry Healy puts this down to his investment in a new all-weather coaching area created recently by Huxley Golf.
Recognising that many golfers liked to practise outside, Mr Healy commissioned Huxley Golf to create an outdoor coaching zone to complement the Centre’s 22 hi-tech covered bays.
The new training facility features a 6ft x 48ft (1.8m x 14.6m) driving area and a 77 sq. yard (64 sq. m) fi ve hole putting green with two chipping pods, all created using Huxley
Golf’s top flight all-weather surfaces. Located close to the 18th hole, fencing was skilfully designed to facilitate views of the Huxley Golf practice area, sparking interest and cleverly generating new coaching enquiries. Floodlighting across the facility extends coaching into the evening.

University opts for Aquatrax
The International Sports Village at Swansea University is home to premier indoor and outdoor facilities including a Class A, International Standard eight-lane athletics track that hosts the university’s athletes, external community and athletics clubs as well as toplevel sporting events.
Continuing their relationship, Replay Maintenance recently carried out their unique Aquatrax process on the track, to bring it back to an ‘as new’ condition.
Aquatrax is a unique process, combining pressure washing and vacuum extraction. The machine applies pressure water jets to dislodge the dirt before a vacuum extraction system removes the dirty water to a tank on the machine leaving a clean surface, free of contaminants.
First developed for the maintenance of polymeric athletics tracks, it has since been adapted to clean dirt and algal growth from unfilled or waterbased synthetic pitches.

Schools and universities use Bituchem for better landscapes
BALI to support members in challenging times
Following the UK’s decision to leave the European Union, BALI has pledged to support members through what will undoubtedly be challenging times for businesses.
Bituchem’s specialist hardlandscaping products have proved a popular choice across the education sector with numerous applications in both schools and universities being completed.
The company has worked for instance with Reading University and Hertfordshire University, as well as a number of primary schools across the country to provide an attractive and maintenance-free landscape solution using its flagship Natratex and Colourtex materials.
Bituchem’s Natratex buff coloured material has appeared to be the most popular choice amongst school and university redevelopments due to its modern aesthetics which complement the colours of Cotswold stone, which is being
used more often for new buildings. The Colourtex material has also grown in popularity due to its many options of vibrant colours. The material is particularly useful for primary school playgrounds which offer Multi-Use Games Areas (MUGA) or require a bright and fun landscape for children.
Available in red, green, blue and buff, Colourtex can be used to create all or part of a scheme for a vivid finish that will not fade. Like Natratex, the colourful aggregates used to create Colourtex are bound using a clear resin binder to ensure longevity of colour and performance, whilst also being safe for use in playgrounds or other areas used by young children.

BALI’s Chief Executive Wayne Grills said as well as those celebrating the outcome of the EU Referendum, there are many who will be looking at the future with genuine concerns for how Brexit will affect their businesses and ultimately their families’ futures.
“No-one has taken their decision lightly and it is BALI’s role to offer guidance and support to its members through any immediate impact from the Brexit vote,” he said.
In the immediate term BALI will be speaking with other industry bodies and the All Party Parliamentary Gardening and Horticulture Group (APPGHG) to establish as quickly as possible what our industry can do to ensure its interests are protected. In the European Parliament the Appeals Committee is due to vote on whether glyphosate will be banned from use as a herbicide. It is understood that
the decision, due later today, will apply to the UK regardless of the Brexit vote.
BALI is also the UK’s representative body within ELCA – the European Landscape Contractors Association – and BALI Technical Director Neil Huck of Ground Control is currently ELCA Vice President. It is anticipated that BALI will be able to continue its membership but once the UK exits the EU it will have no further role in influencing ELCA’s lobbying of the European Parliament on European issues.
Wayne Grills continued: “The UK landscaping and horticulture industry will have to come together quickly to formulate an action plan designed to assist governments in prioritising those areas that will affect us in the short to medium term. We will keep our members informed every step of the way and work to ensure the ‘Leave’ decision allows them to continue to prosper, whatever course of action lies ahead.”

EFIA launches free guide to cyber security
The European Fencing Industry Association (EFIA) has launched a new and unique guide to cyber security, providing its members with free cyber security advice, in addition to guidance on the dangers of internet crime.
EFIA Chairman, Bernard KilBride, who has recently completed a BSc degree in computer security, says ‘there has never been a worse time to be connected and unprotected’, with the UK fencing industry a surprisingly vulnerable sector, given their involvement in their clients’ own security requirements.
The document – The EFIA Introduction to Cyber Security - highlights the dangers of internet crime and provides
direction on how SMEs can protect themselves, in addition to offering information on the main, common types of threat and how to establish an effective security system. In particular, information is highlighted on necessary systems such as passwords, email use, internet use, social media use and back up.
The free guide is intended as an introduction to the subject and directs members towards the government’s ‘Cyber Essentials accreditation scheme’, with more and more government departments now insisting their suppliers have achieved CE before they can work for them.

such require extra support when adhering them to the mortar bed. Pavetuf Priming Slurry is specifically designed to provide this additional support and give an outstanding bond between the new mortar base and stone or porcelain paving.

Pictorial Meadows launches innovative PM Turf product
Pictorial Meadows have been designing and creating beautiful meadows and naturalistic landscapes for some 15 years now. Synonymous with quality, reliability and sheer flower power, the PM family of seed mixes was pioneered by Nigel Dunnett and first came to the nation’s attention through the amazing displays at London’s Olympic Park and in the large scale displays by Councils and visitor attractions.
This year they are very proud to be launching their latest product to the market – PM Turf – which has been specifically developed to give customers all the benefits of the Pictorial Meadows perennial seed mixtures in a product that is quick and easy to establish. Grown to exacting production standards, PM Turf consists of 100% designer meadow plantlets growing in a special substrate which ensures complete consistency and customer satisfaction.
A complete diversion from other ‘turf’ products on the market, PM Turf offers the same unique benefits as the rest of the Pictorial Meadows range – stunning designed mixtures selected for an extended season, coupled with their magnet-like attraction for pollinators and other wildlife.
An easy and reliable product for Architects, Landscape Architects and Designers to specify it has already been used to great effect with Local Authorities, University campuses, housing developments and domestic gardens. In fact anywhere that demands a beautiful naturalistic look!
A great example of the flexibility of PM Turf is how Pictorial Meadows used it to stunning effect in the garden of a new build property they were recently asked to design in Reading. Using only PM Turf in drifts through the charming walled garden they managed to compliment perfectly the clean and modern lines of the Architect designed house. The house and garden are a source of great joy for the owner and have just been presented with a national RIBA award for the excellence of the design!
PM Turf can be laid at any time of the year provide the conditions allow – with the main deliveries normally being made in autumn which is the optimum laying period. All PM Turf is harvested and despatched direct to your site and is delivered stacked flat on pallets to avoid damage. It is as easy to lay as normal grass turf and provided
you keep it well watered to settle in, it will reward you with a magnificent flowering display within a few weeks.
Why not let Pictorial Meadows take all the strain and stress out of establishing your perfect meadow?
Pictorial Meadows offer a full consultation service and will visit your site to assess the conditions and make recommendations on the best mixes and procedures to be used. They will give a full quotation for the supply of the PM Turf and also to install the meadow using their own highly experienced staff.
For the 2016 season PM Turf will be available in the following mixtures:
• Golden Summer
• Treasure Chest
• Purple Haze
We would also be very happy to discuss any bespoke or specific orders that you may require to be pre-grown – please call to discuss.
Demand for this amazing new product is understandably high so if you are interested in either ordering some PM Turf for your projects or would like to find out more information then please contact Pictorial Meadows sales on 0114 2677635 or email sales@pictorialmeadows.co.uk

Holding on for the summer
A lawn that’s looking thin and weak may benefi t from a light dressing of fertiliser or a turf conditioner and certainly when the effects of drought are visible, dull and brown grass, thorough irrigation is called for.
Turf grass comprises over 85% water so it needs irrigation to replenish, strengthen it and ‘green it up’.
Watering is essential for seed germination, cooling the plant and helping to prevent dry patch while pushing fertiliser granules into the turf and converting it for the plant to take it up. That said, continuous watering can also have a damaging effect and
lead to disease, hence the rule of irrigating thoroughly once or at most twice a week.
Professional groundsmen will have the benefit of being able to measure moisture loss but this is not practical for the home owner so vigilance is key.
The lawn will benefit from a summer feed and organic fertilisers are made from a wide variety of naturally occurring organic materials which release their nutrients after different periods of time.
It’s particularly important to strike the right balance when feeding at his time of the year.
Viano Universal Lawn Feed has effective ingredients of nitrogen, phosphate and potash + magnesium (7-5-8 +3) and is ideal for keeping the lawn healthy and green, actively working over a twelve week period.
Where the lawn is stressed due to drought, Viano Recovery is an organic fertiliser with effective ingredients mixed with Humifrist which acts as a plant growth stimulant. If moss persists Viano’s MO Bacter has the answer to eliminating it without blackening the grass and used in late summer or early autumn will stifle moss development in winter.

Deep penetration aeration for trees
Terrain Aeration have been treating trees in all types of situation for over 25 years, from back gardens to large estates right through to Royal Parks.
The Terrain Aeration Terralift machines comprise a probe which reaches one metre depth, deeper than the roots of trees (other than the major tap roots which grow straight down).
Breaking up the soil around the roots, and beyond, means that excess water will drain away from the roots to help stop anaerobic conditions and rotting of the root system. The probe is then used to inject dried seaweed which helps keep the fissures open and backfilling the probe holes with aggregate provides a semi permanent aeration/ ventilation shaft.
Terrain Aeration aerate around the roots using two-metre spacings - on most occasions one-metre inside and one-metre outside the canopy drip line, as this is where the growing roots lie. Decompacting around the roots and injecting air into the soil increases the percentage of uptake of oxygen into the root system.

Rugby School is one of the oldest independent schools in Britain, offering co-educational day and boarding schooling in Warwickshire.
Always looking to improve the quality of the machinery they use to deliver top quality sports surfaces, Head Groundsman James Mead took delivery of an INFiNiSystem and a selection of TMSystem cassettes from ATT at the start of this season.
James purchased the 22” INFiNiSystem, along with the SMARTCut, SMARTUltraGroomer and SMARTPowerBrush cassettes from within ATT’s Turf Management System.
“The range of tools available make this is a superbly versatile machine,” he says. “The height of cut on the SMARTCut cassette can be changed easily – we’ve been setting the square
at 12mm and 10mm, and for the wickets anything between 3mm and 7mm.
“To add the finishing touches to the wicket we use the UltraGroomer and PowerBrush cassettes in conjunction to thin out, reduce any Poa or rogue grasses, combat any lateral growth and get the sward standing upright.
“These cassettes have been exceptional and since we’ve been using them, all the players and staff have commented on the performance we’ve achieved with the wickets.”
The SMARTCut and SMARTUltraGroomer cassettes have also found homes on the school’s grass tennis courts, thinning out and preparing them for play.

the triple mower has full width rollers at the front and rear. This restricts airflow and the high-speed blades create suction beneath the deck chamber, sucking up the uncut grass to leave a superb quality cut at high speeds.
Roller operation is simplified, as no electro-hydraulics are required and there are no electric clutches. The transmission system allows wings to be engaged and disengaged whilst in work, without a clutch mechanism.
Wing control is independent, they are operational with one wing lifted, and the folding wings can cut gradients from -30° to +30° with the middle deck remaining on level ground. The sheer speed of cutting means considerable savings are to be made, with
reduced fuel consumption being as much as fifty percent.
Maintenance is substantially reduced and servicing is economical when compared to a cylinder mower. Put these benefits together and weigh up
the cost. It won’t be long before the virtues of running a roller mower plant it firmly ahead of its cylinder counterparts.

Bosch continues to power on
The Bosch range of batterypowered mowers is aimed at the professional market.
By using highly efficient battery systems and eliminating servicing costs, the mowers effectively pay for themselves in less than three years of regular use.
The British-built products allow for all-day working thanks to low noise and low vibration levels produced by the weatherproof high performance batteries.
The batteries take just 42 minutes to recharge, providing enough power to mow an area equivalent to an entire football pitch.
The new professional models are weatherproof and produce significantly lower noise than their petrol alternatives. Moreover, the fuel savings that flow from battery-powered technology mean that the mowers could effectively pay for themselves over a few years.

Trimax makes the grade at Langley School
Langley School is a prestigious independent co-ed boarding school set in deepest Norfolk countryside, including 70 acres of grass for rugby, football, hockey and cricket, tennis and athletics and 40 acres of amenity parkland.
So with a year-round need to keep the pitches match-ready, it’s no wonder Langley’s groundskeeping team loves their new tractor-pulled Trimax mower – the Pegasus 493.
The school’s Head Groundsman, Neil Yarham, says they’ve now got their mowing down from 40 hours to just 15.
“The Pegasus 493 has an increased cutting width and higher speed,” he said. “That means we can
cut more regularly and maintain a top-notch surface, which all goes towards the quality of our sporting facilities. The machine handles our terrain really well and
the large front rollers follow the contours with ease. I’ve never had any scalping.”

Reform Metracs bring in the business
David Paisley proprietor of nationwide contracting company Pennine Environmental Solutions says he attributes the growth of his business to the acquisition, almost four years ago, of his 59hp, 4 cylinder, diesel powered, hydrostatic drive Reform Metrac H5X.
David says: “We really had no specific work for the H5X when we took the decision to buy it but the range of service provision and capabilities it has given us has resulted in sustained business growth and means we now have grounds maintenance contracts nationwide, including Wrexham, Carlisle, Hastings and along the M25.
“Our work level has increased to the point where we took the decision recently to add a second
Reform, a new 70hp turbo charged hydrostatic drive Metrac H7SX model.
“The Reforms are the mainstay of our fleet for work such as maintenance with mulching devices, parks maintenance with a sickle mower and grass vacuum, autumn maintenance with a leaf vacuum, mowing safely on river and highway bank slopes and forestry work with a winch and trailer.”
The Metrac with Muthing flail is a critically safe machine; manoeuvrable, versatile and well-suited to working on slopes and for the widest range of grounds maintenance tasks.
Multi-purpose Toro mowers for council
As part of a full mowers replacement programme, Bassetlaw District Council in North Nottinghamshire has welcomed two Toro LT3340 high performance reel mowers in a bid to maintain the district’s multitude of diverse grassy areas.
With North Nottinghamshire being a largely rural area, Keith Somers, Operational Services Manager (Hort), explains why Bassetlaw District Council chose to invest in the Toro LT3340s: “The two new mowers have replaced older machines as part of a replacement programme of existing machinery we have with Toro and UK distributor Lely Turfcare. They have joined another four Toros that we already operate here.
Since the mowers arrived on site on February 2016, Keith says they have been used to maintain “parks, cemeteries, closed church yards, housing estates and sports areas”.
“The main benefits of these machines are that they are able to deal with both small and large areas of grass across all of these different spaces,” he adds.
From light trimming to mowing dense, overgrown areas, the LT3340 can be tailored to suit a variety of mowing applications.
The high quality design and robust heavy duty construction meets the most demanding of environments, whilst the high-performance cutting units provide the perfect finish every time.
Keith goes on to explain why Toro was the preferred choice when the Council initially took the move to replace machinery: “Toro was chosen as we felt, after going through a tender process trialling other brands, that they were the best value for money.”
Heading up a grounds team of 25 full time employees, six seasonal employees and one apprentice,
Keith notes that his team are also happy with the choice: “The mowers are rated as very good by the staff; they do like these machines.”
While the machinery was supplied by distributor Lely Turfcare, the Council has also worked with local Nottingham-based Toro dealer PS Marsden on the replacement programme. “We use
PS Marsden for parts and also use them for purchasing other grounds maintenance equipment,” explains Keith. “I have always found them to be a very competitive company when providing us with quotations for other equipment and they have been very good with getting back quickly with repairs or supplying spare parts.”

A mower like no other
Steeped in British history, Blenheim Palace has stood like a ‘jewel in the crown’ in the English countryside at Woodstock, Oxfordshire for over 800 years and today is the home of the Twelfth Duke of Marlborough and his family.
The entire estate consists of 12,500 acres which includes commercially farmed and environmentally managed land. Some 2,100 acres are directly connected to the palace by way of parkland and ‘award-winning formal gardens, which were designed originally by Capability Brown
Managing the parkland and gardens is no mean feat! With such a wide area of parkland grass to keep under control, Head of Rural Enterprises, Roy Cox and his team have their work cut out.
A chance viewing by the Duke of Marlborough, of a Major TriDeck mower working at Kirtland Park Polo Club, made their lives a whole lot easier. Following a demonstration by Farol Ltd, they took delivery of their Major TriDeck mower in February this year.
The man responsible for grass maintenance at Blenheim is something of a legend in his own right. Ron Keay is 80 years
old and has been maintaining the grounds at Blenheim Palace for 65 years. He knows a good mower when he sees one!
“This Major Tri-Deck is such a good mower,” said Ron. “It’s easy to attach, simple to adjust the height of cut - depending on what type of grass we are cutting. It’s very heavy duty, and follows the contours of the ground perfectly, so we don’t get any scalping. We cut around three thousand acres per year and the Major is well capable of handling that task.”

New John Deere zero-turn mowers for 2016
Models in John Deere’s Ztrak Series zero-turn lawnmower range feature several enhancements for 2016, including new mower decks, a new numbering system and new styling, similar to the company’s commercial models.
Ztrak mowers deliver on-thespot turning, using easy to operate control levers. This
means there is no obstacle this machine cannot easily and effi ciently manoeuvre around, saving you time and effort.
With a choice of 107 and 122cm (42 and 48in) cutting widths, the all-new Accel Deep mower decks provide higher levels of cut quality and finish, as well as greater productivity, durability and versatility.
The deep, flat-top deck allows a clean flow of grass clippings from the large discharge opening. Minimal re-cutting improves the mower’s capacity and available power, enabling the machine to maintain high performance even in difficult mowing conditions and at greater speeds.
Thanks to its smooth contours, the deck stays cleaner in work and is also easier to clean when servicing, as there is less build-up of re-cut material. The deck’s heavy-duty, durable design ensures many hours of trouble-free operation. The MulchControl attachment (optional on certain decks) provides superior mulching performance and versatility. Changing from side discharge to mulching or vice versa is done with the simple fl ip of a lever.

Places for People opt for Etesia
Etesia’s mowers have helped a number of local authorities and contractors tackle the challenges facing them in the current financial climate.
With frequent cuts and smaller teams with fewer resources for servicing and maintenance; more and more people are choosing Etesia machines for their multi-capacity roles and their reliability, longevity and efficiency.
Places for People, a property management, development and regeneration company, purchased a Hydro 80 MKHP ride-on mower and David Ramsden, Contract Supervisor for the company believes that the machine has increased productivity and reduced costs.“The Hydro 80 is probably the best machine we’ve purchased. It cut mowing down compared to push mowers and speeded up what our teams can do, allowing them to do other

“We find that we can run the machines for up to four years which is fantastic, as previously, we were changing every two years. You may pay a little extra for an Etesia machine when you purchase it, but the overall lifetime cost is far lower,” he said.

The Stade Geoffory-Guichard in Saint-Etienne, hosted three group matches along with the Round of 16 match. It is maintained using two Ransomes Mastiff heavy duty walk-behind mowers and a Jacobsen TriKing ride-on triple mower.
The German squad, based at Evian-les-Bains close to the border with Switzerland, is using the facilities at the Stade d’Evian, which is maintained with a Jacobsen TR3 ride-on triple mower.
Iceland’s training facility at Complexe Sportif d’Albigny, on the shores of the Lake Annecy includes the Stade d’Annecy Le Vieux, maintained with a Jacobsen Tri-King, while Spain is using the Stade Pech David in
Toulouse, which is also mown using a Jacobsen Tri-King.
Alan Prickett, Managing Director at Ransomes Jacobsen said: “This continues a long tradition of mowers from Ipswich being used at global sports events and it gives us a profound sense of pride that we are providing the equipment to help prepare pristine playing surfaces at tournaments such as this.”

Kilworth Machinery introduce remote control mowers
Kilworth Machinery are the sole UK importers of the MDB range of remote controlled mowers.
MDB of Italy have had many years’ experience in remote controlled machinery for commercial and military applications and have now transferred this expertise into the ground care market.
After successful testing in the UK two models were initially introduced, the Green Climber LV and the Mini Green Climber. Both are designed to operate in areas that would be hazardous to an operator walking behind or sitting on a mower.
The Green Climber is available in 40HP (LV400) and 50HP (LV500) versions with Yanmar 3 & 4 cylinder diesel engines providing the power. The engines have been specially developed for working on slopes and allow the Green Climber to operate safely on slopes
up to 60 degrees in any direction. Stability is ensured by rubber tracks which are hydraulically extendable in width from 1300mm to 1700mm.
Engine cooling is by means of a self cleaning “CleanFix” reversible fan system that automatically keeps the radiator and grill clear to prevent overheating.
A 1.3m cut flail mower is fitted as standard. The mower is designed and built for constant use in harsh environments and has 400mm of hydraulic side shift to assist with cutting up close to trees and fencing.
The flail mower is easily removed and other attachments including trencher, snow blower, snow plough, sweeper and hedge cutter can be mounted on the Green Climber.
The Mini Green Climber is similar in principle to the standard Green Climber but is lighter and
more compact. It is powered by a 25HP twin cylinder air cooled diesel engine. The flail mower is 1.0m working width and sits between the rubber tracks to give a total width of 1500mm. In order to maintain the same 60 degree bank capabilities as the larger machine, the engine on the Mini Green Climber is self levelling.
All Green Climbers are radio controlled by a robust and ergonomic hand held unit with joystick and push button control of all functions. Radio control range is 300m with automatic
shut down outside this range. For the 2016 season, two new models have been introduced. The LV300 fills the gap between the mini green climber and the LV400. It has a 29HP diesel engine and adjustable tracks extendable from 1.15m to 1.55m width.
The LV600 is the new flagship model, based on the LV500, with 56HP high torque engine and extra heavy duty track units.

EGO Power+ is set to challenge beliefs and expectations about lawnmowers in 2016 with its new range of lithium-ion powered products.
Three new lawnmowers have been added to the range which now includes a contemporary steel deck design that is available with a 50cm width with the option of a selfdrive feature that runs from an independent motor. This can be operated at variable speeds dependent on the user and grass conditions. Due to the independent motor, the self-drive feature operates separately to the cutting system.
A 52cm poly deck model has also been added to the range to offer a wider alternative to the existing 50cm mower. The new poly model also features the selfdrive option.
All four mowers in the range are able to be compactly folded for vertical storage and have mulching capabilities.
New batteries, featuring EGO’s patented arc design and “keep cool” cell technology, have also been added to the range with a 5Ah and 7.5Ah being introduced to power the mower’s new features.

Two new lightweight contenders in the Toro Reelmaster range
Brand new from Toro to the UK are the Reelmaster 3555-D and 3575-D fairway mowers.
Joining the Reelmaster 3550-D, which weighs in at just 900kg, these two additions aren’t letting the side down with their lightweight credentials weighing approximately 500lbs less than comparable four-wheel Toro mowers and providing more choice in the lightweight fairway mower arena.
With the weight balanced from front-to-back and side-to-side, a low centre of gravity is created and when this is combined with smooth turf-friendly tyres the result is a reduction in turf compaction and damage.
Also contributing to this light step around the course is a highly manoeuvrable three-wheel-
drive system which allows the machines to make tight turns with ease, reduces turnaround time and, just like the tyres, significantly decreases the potential for turf tear. Just like the RM3550-D before them, these machines make a big impression without leaving one.
As well as being among the lightest on the market, both machines are also among the quietest in their class. Registering at just 84dB(A) for the operator and at 73dB(A) 25-foot away, which is the same a motorbike they are ideal for courses in residential areas.
Powered by a 24.8hp (18.5kW) Kubota diesel engine, the Reelmaster 3555-D and 3575-D provide plenty of power to climb hills, even while running groomers and rear roller
Road Sign
Have you ever seen a men at work sign with the wording hedge cutting on the road side, then gone around the corner only to find it’s a large tractor cutting the hedge, taking up hafe of the road. Legislation says that there must be road signage, but why not one that fits the job.
Working with Quazar International, who have been manufacturing and pioneering reflective products for over 40 years, we have developed a road sign that lets drivers know what to expect around that corner.
This conforming road sign, rolls up for ease of transportation and storage, is very easy to erect, and is made from a standard grade reflectivity. The size is 750mm and has 4 additional sub plates. All sub plates are interchangeable, with press stud fastening.
brushes, yet they use less fuel per acre than traditional fairway mowers. A 100 inch width of cut and Toro’s renowned Dual Precision Adjustment (DPA) cutting units featuring Toro’s all new Edge Series cylinders provide a consistent, longlasting, crisp, clean cut whether opting for five inch cutting units on the RM3555-D or seven on the RM3575-D, with the choice of eight or 11 blades on both.

Profihopper suits all cutting conditions
Amazone’s Profihopper is designed to cut both long and short grass and collect the cuttings efficiently both in the dry and wet.
The out-front horizontal SmartCut flail rotor has 36 pairs of free-swinging blades which can be changed from a short lift blade which is ideal for rougher light scrub such as heather or brambles or long, rough grass.
These H60 wing blades can also have a scarifying blade put with them as a combination which can then be used not only for scarifying but also leaf and litter collection.
The shorter wing blades can be switched to a long wing for cutting shorter still and the longer H77 blade gives a higher tip speed and a finer cut. There
is also a specialist H88 blade for fine lawn turf finish.
Cuttings are propelled off the blades into a cross auger that brings the grass into a centre auger from where it is then taken up into the hopper.
There are three models: zDrive with lever steer is a genuine zero-turn machine for use in areas where tight manoeuvring is necessary; the iDrive which is two-wheel drive with a steering wheel; and the 4Wdi with a steering wheel are both zero-turn with a turning circle of 30cm.
Cutting width is 1.2 metres only on all models and the hopper lifts to 2.1m to tip into a trailer or pick-up.

A-Plant boosts groundcare fleet
The UK’s largest equipment hire company, A-Plant is futureproofing its groundcare hire fleet with the purchase of five new Kubota tractors.
A-Plant has purchased Kubota’s mini-excavators for many years as part of its construction hire fleet, but for its latest order, which includes Kubota’s B2650, B3150 and L4240 models, the company welcomes its first fleet of Kubota tractors.
The five new additions will complement the company’s existing groundcare fleet, which A-Plant currently supplies to a range of sectors including local authorities, schools, facilities management companies, market gardens, commercial growers as well as others.
The decision to choose Kubota over other brands was based on
a twofold criteria, which David Kendall, A-Plant’s Business Development Manager explains: “Before purchase we always look at two factors – strong dealer support and product that is already popular with our customers in industry.
“Kubota ticked both boxes. The service and support offered through our local Kubota dealer, Lister Wilder, coupled with the fact that they have multiple sites and a dedicated service team were central to our decision to choose Kubota product. Its range is also market-leading and well respected, so we predict demand will be high for this new range.”
A-Plant is leading the market with regard to its long-term environmental aspirations, boasting one of the newest and cleanest fleets in the industry.

There’s a tool-less air filter cover for easy access, even with gloves on, which makes it easier to clean the air fi lters on site.
The ECHO SRM-2620TES is available in both U-handle and loop-handle versions and the

Double quick results for Terra Spike
Delivery of a new Wiedenmann Terra Spike aerator prompted two sets of excellent instant feedback at Stanmore Golf Club, Middlesex.
Firstly, course manager, Barry Neville, and his staff of five greenkeepers reported the GXi8 HD deep aerator had easily tined all 18 greens down to 150 mm with fabulous effect.
“After our installation and training session we just kept going,” he said. “The greens hadn’t been spiked for a few weeks so the team got everything done on day one with 8 mm tines in a 50 mm square hole pattern.
“The results were so much better than anything that had gone before and faster. We got the required depth, didn’t need to roll them and just cut them the next morning. Within another day the holes were hardly noticeable.”
The second set of plaudits came from Stanmore club members themselves.
“Golfers don’t tend to like any machinery on the greens but we had lots of positive comments, all saying how pleasantly surprised they were by the lack of disturbance to the surface,” continued Barry Neville.

Imants ShockWave plays its part for award winning groundsman
Campey Turf Care Systems has supplied an Imants Shockwave to Freddie Brickland, head groundsman at Cheshire County Sports Club, who was recently named as The Cheshire FA Groundsman of the Year for 2016.
The accolade is even more impressive when taking into consideration the fact that the site of six football pitches, one rugby pitch, two mini football pitches, one 9 v 9 pitch and two artificial hockey pitches is all maintained by Freddie and his assistant, Kyle Witley.
“I spoke to various people before we purchased the machine and they all recommended going for the Imants ShockWave, so we had a couple of demos from
Campeys just to show everyone at the club how well it could work for us, so after seeing it they were happy for us to get it, and we haven’t looked back since,” he said.
“It’s perfect for us, surface disruption is minimal and that keeps all the users happy, because there’s nothing worse when the ball bobbles over the pitch after work has been done to it, so that’s a massive advantage of the ShockWave.”
The Imants ShockWave is designed to revitalise heavy wear areas by relieving this compaction, whilst improving aeration and removing surface water.

Compliance the ClearWater way
ClearWater, the UK manufactured below ground washpad water recycling system is, believes Highspeed Group, the most cost effective and efficient biological system available.
The company is continuing to experience an upsurge in
orders for their unique system particularly now that many have realised that, to meet legal requirements and prevent pollution, recycling is more affordable than believed.
ClearWater’s increased popularity is seen by the company
as being the result of its winning formula: “Keep the engineering and maintenance simple, ensure the system is effective and efficient yet remains affordable,” as MD David Mears said.
Installing ClearWater brings tax advantages for many. Having
being the first system of its type to be officially approved as a water saving technology as long ago as March 2008, purchasers can write off 100% of their costs against taxable profits under the Enhanced Capital Allowance scheme.

SISIS TM1000 puts club in full control
Adi Porter, course manager at Greetham Valley Golf Club, has said that he is now in full control of thatch build-up since using the SISIS Rotorake TM1000.
To continually reach high standards, Adi has assembled a highly professional and experienced team which consists of himself, a deputy course manager, a first assistant, six assistant greenkeepers, two mechanics and a trainee greenkeeper.
The team works tirelessly to maintain the two 18’s and 9-hole course, the driving range and bowling green, and while this is going on, the club also offers a contracting greenkeeping service.
“We manage the vast workload by investing in our staff and purchasing good reliable machinery,” said Adi.
“The criteria for me had to be about the machine’s performance in thatch removal and the cleanliness of the operation, but also it had to be productive. The SISIS TM1000 matched all of the above.”
The SISIS Rotorake TM1000 is a tractor mounted heavy duty scarifier and linear aerator and is un-rivalled when it comes to removing and controlling thatch. It includes a collector box and floating unit to follow ground contours and its contra-rotating reel throws debris forward ensuring a clean, consistent groove resulting in an excellent finish when the time comes to scarify.
With interchangeable blades and a quick, simple depth setting without tools, it’s no wonder why so many greenkeepers and course managers like Adi, have reaped the benefits of using the TM1000.

Workman stands the test of time
John O’Gaunt Golf Club in Sandy, Bedfordshire, has five ‘generations’ of Toro Workman on its two 18-hole courses.
Nigel Broadwith, course manager, explains the history of the Toro Workman at the club.
“We bought our first Workman in 1999, since then we’ve added a new one to the fleet on a fairly regular basis in 2001, 2004, 2008 and 2009. They’re used for everything from top dressing, spraying and of course transporting tools and machinery around the course.
“They get our seal of approval because they are reliable, comfortable and economical. Transport capacity is good, and so is ground pressure, even when the vehicle is fully loaded with equipment.”
“The latest additions to the Workman fleet were two HDXs, which have been at other clubs on a lease plan. They are five years old, and prove that these units can last the distance.”

Garia Utility range available in UK
Garia, the global manufacturer of luxury golf carts, has appointed ePower Trucks to distribute its new range of utility vehicles (UTVs).
The Garia Utility sets new benchmarks in terms of standard features for a UTV cab, providing unrivalled height and leg room. It is also the first electric utility truck manufacturer to offer a Lithium-Ion battery pack as an option, replacing the standard 8x 6V lead acid pack.

This UTV has compact dimensions of 1.31m wide and 3.23m long; and has a tight turning
circle of just 6.5m. There are two models: the Garia Utility Park, for off-highway use such as grounds keeping and estates management; and the road-legal Garia Utility City. The Park model has a top speed of 25 kph (16 mph) charge. The City version has a top speed of 45 kph (30 mph) and additional standard safety features such as
lights and a three-point seat belt. Autonomy is up to 75km (45 miles) on a single charge. The flatbed has a payload of up to 740kg, with other body options include mesh cage, drop sides, tipper, and a fully enclosed van with rear and side doors.

Lock and Ride has certainly revolutionised off-road vehicle customisation, offering everything from cargo boxes, the Polaris Northstar Cooler (which is certified ‘bear proof’), Tool Rack and Chainsaw Mount right
through to Gun Mount Boots and in cab Gun Mount, for shooting and gamekeeping. Polaris’ partnership with Kolpin also offers the Kolpin Gun Boot and ratcheting Rhino Grips.
When you have need of a winch with performance you won’t do better than the 4,500lb winch engineered and built by Warn exclusively for Polaris with full sealing for maximum water resistance and a patented roller disc brake for assured holding power.
You can protect your Ranger with brushguards in durable matt black finish and rugged styling, with integrated mounting holes for easy installation of lights. Wentworth selects 007 for iconic greens
The Wentworth Club, at Virginia Water in Surrey, has selected 007 DSB Creeping Bent to re-seed the greens on its famous West Course which is currently undergoing major improvements.
The iconic course is currently undergoing major renovation works including the redesign of several greens and tees, fairway drainage improvements and bunker remodelling. The 8th, 11th, 14th, 15th and 16th greens are undergoing a full redesign to make them more appealing to players of all abilities, while all 18 greens will receive a full re-seed.
The Club’s ambition is to cement its place as a world class course for both tournaments and Club members alike. It will be the first in England to have the SubAir system introduced to all
its greens. All 18 greens will be seeded with 007 DSB Creeping Bent.
“007 DSB Creeping Bent is a genetically advanced variety developed out of the Rutgers University turfgrass breeding program, and is available in the UK exclusively from Germinal,” explains Richard Brown, Amenity Sales Manager for Germinal. “It is widely adaptable to both warm summers and cold winters and retains a deep green colour all year round, even in the depths of winter.”
007 DSB also benefits from high disease resistance, especially to Anthracnose, Fusarium and Snow Mould, and also shows good Dollar Spot resistance.

to create a sleek finish. With gull wing side access, a washclean interior and significant roof strength which allows additional storage, the utility hardtop also has a large capacity with plenty of space for racking and tools.
The RS combines the workability of a commercial hardtop with the advanced styling of a leisure top. It has a practical wipe clean interior and solid sides for a secure, hidden load whilst the rear door glass is tinted and toughened.
