Campaigners step up landscape fight as HS2 bill is launched
The government is pressing ahead with legislation that will eventually enable work to start on the £50bn HS2 high-speed rail link.
Legislation which will give the government the legal powers to construct and operate the London to Birmingham first phase of HS2 is going through Parliament. If it progresses smoothly, it should receive Royal Assent around the end of 2016, with work beginning on the project in 2017, with a finishing date of 2026.
It comes as research from the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) shows that better data collection and a new indicator of tranquillity are needed to increase protection for England’s most peaceful areas.
In surveying a range of authorities, from National Parks to borough councils, CPRE’s Give peace a chance report shows that 90 per cent of authorities would like better guidance and new data to develop tranquillity policies. More than 90 per cent of respondents support the case for new national tranquillity maps, which CPRE believes could greatly help local authorities when new infrastructure projects are planned.
Numerous studies show that immersion in nature is good for health and wellbeing. Tranquillity is therefore a vital resource for people to relieve stress and recharge their batteries.
Graeme Willis, rural campaigner at the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE), comments:
“It’s encouraging that Government has looked afresh at how good design can reduce the impact of new infrastructure, and pledged to provide new maps of open-access green space. But our research shows that councils are unlikely to drive forward the policies we need to protect some of our most tranquil areas without better open data and guidance.
“The Coalition Government introduced a landmark national policy to protect areas of tranquillity. We’re therefore calling on the new Government to build on their manifesto commitments and invest a modest amount to enable councils to improve quality of life in their communities.”
Yet, in 2007, CPRE’s ‘intrusion’ mapping showed that such areas
BALI announces Chief
BALI’s Board of Directors has announced the promotion of Wayne Grills to the role of Chief Executive of the association. His appointment is effective immediately.
Since joining BALI in 2011 Wayne Grills has been instrumental in achieving the systems and processes at Landscape House set out in the Board’s Strategic Plan.
His appointment to the role of Chief Executive recognises his achievements and acknowledges the increased responsibility that
comes with the growth in membership and influence of the association over the past four years.
BALI National Chairman Bob Field said: “People are voting with their feet and BALI has experienced a marked increase in membership numbers. Wayne has done an excellent job since joining the association and we feel the title of Chief Executive better represents the role and responsibilities he undertakes.”
are getting rarer: the tranquillity of England is being increasingly fragmented by urban development and new infrastructure.
CPRE’s report finds that some planning authorities have successfully developed policies to protect tranquillity since 2012, when the Government’s flagship planning reform, the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF), encouraged them to do so.
Yet the report indicates that few authorities outside of those set up to manage protected areas like National Parks have implemented policies protecting tranquillity –and 75 per cent of authorities without a current policy do not plan to introduce one.

Welcome...
The fight to save the UK green and pleasant landscape continues apace with the focus on the new Government following May’s General Election.
As the Conservatives push on with controversial plans for High Speed Rail 2 (HS2), concern is growing that the Government’s commitment to invest heavily in infrastructure over the next decade and longer will have a serious impact on our landscape.
The Government is to face increased campaign to safeguard our green spaces, with the CPRE releasing the Give peace a chance report showing that 90 per cent of authorities would like better guidance and new data to develop tranquillity policies. More than 90 per cent of respondents support the case for new national tranquillity maps, which CPRE believes could greatly help local authorities when new infrastructure projects are planned.
It will be interesting to see how such campaigns develop during what promises to be a very busy summer for the industry.
The decision to move SALTEX back in the calendar to November at NEC Birmingham will have an impact on the industry and manufacturers, for example, as it means part of the peak summer season will not be spent with one eye on preparations for Windsor. Of course, that will hinge on the weather – but isn’t that always the case?
We also have the usual summer season of events to look forward, plus the UK once again plays host to a major international sporting event in September when the Rugby World Cup kicks off. The tournament will provide another showcase for the industry’s expertise, both on and off the pitch.
This month we have several features, including aerators, sweepers, vacuums and collectors, weed control and Jane Carley takes a detailed look at the thriving two and four-wheel tractors market.
We also have our usual mix of product news, including some major new launches, and views from across the industry.

Wildflower mix impresses at golf course
A prestigious golf course in Kent has turned to Sherriff Amenity to help create a beautiful array of wild flowers, which have added more appeal to its spectacular fairways and stunning views.
Following a successful wild flower planting initiative launched by the Ladies Section at Lamberhurst Golf Course, greens staff decided to create another superb wild flower area near the club’s ‘half way hut’.
The seeds were planted at the beginning of the year and the area has blossomed into a main attraction for both members and visitors alike.
“The feedback has been incredible. Not only are the players amazed but even people from the village walk up to look at it. More than often players will stand on the tee and take photos with the backdrop of all the beautiful flowers,” said Bruce Woodgate, head greenkeeper at Lamberhurst Golf Club.
To create this exquisite display, Bruce used a mix of Colour Splash Douce France and combined with a WW1
Commemorative flower mixture featuring a 100% Poppy mix which results in a great show of vivid red flowers and provides a fitting and poignant display to the fallen.
The flower mix was a special package purchased from Sherriff Amenity that also came with a beehive which was positioned in a quiet and safe place away from the fairway. It was a welcome addition to Lamberhurst, as the popular golf club is keen to continue a great wildlife on the golf course.
“It is always noted that golf clubs are bad for the environment, bad for ecology and they never do anything to encourage wildlife but this is quite to the contrary,” adds Neil Pullen, regional manager at Sherriff Amenity.
“Lamberhurst is heaving with wildlife. Bees’ general population is struggling but the extended flower bed here really helps them out and I’m absolutely delighted that Sherriff Amenity can play a part in this.”

The Grass Group’s solo debut at ECB sponsored event
Kent County Cricket Club recently held an ‘open’ event at their new-look County Ground in Beckenham entitled ‘One Day, One Game’.
More than 100 cricketers, coaches, officials and groundsmen attended the day. However, only one machinery company was asked to demonstrate a range of equipment - The Grass Group.
The day was designed to bring the complete cricketing family together on one packed day to include coaching workshops; advice from the ECB; a tour of the new facilities; and the innovations brought to the cricket market by Advanced Turf Technology (ATT).
Following the series of lectures, The Grass Group took the Groundsmen outside to demonstrate the ATT INFiNiSystem at work on the cricket outfield. Various SMART cassettes from the 10 available within the TMSystem were on display.
In addition to the SMARTCut cutting unit, delegates were also shown the SMARTUltraGroomer cassette in action. This cassette is specifically designed to reduce overly dense swards and therefore prevent thatch accumulation taking hold. To complete the display was the transport trailer for the INFiNiSystem.

Ground Control helps create new Resorts World
Ground Control is currently working on an exciting new design and build project at Resorts World Birmingham, soon to be home to the UK’s first super casino.
The £150m integrated leisure and entertainment complex is due to open in the summer of 2015, bringing a wide range of exciting new leisure and entertainment offers to visitors.
The development consists of an outlet shopping centre, a spa hotel, restaurants and bars, a cinema, a conference centre, and a casino. Construction of the 538,000 sq. ft complex has begun, and Ground Control is well underway delivering a wide range of external works on behalf of Galliford Try Construction.
Works include a bespoke terrace construction and structural concrete works to the lake edge,
exposed aggregate paving, step construction and cladding, integrated strip lighting and uplighters, marginal planting, semi mature tree planting, hardwood timber benches and planters, counter terrorist security measures, earthworks and soft landscaping.
In order to facilitate Ground Control’s work, a 150 metre floating pontoon was installed to allow continued access to thousands of pedestrians into the nearby Genting Arena and the NEC. A 2 metre high, 100 metre long Portadam was also installed to enable sufficient access to the lake edge.
Ground Control’s Landscape Architect, Chris King, is delighted to have worked on the new development: “The project certainly provided an array of challenges which kept me and the team on our toes.
the team’s mixture of backgrounds and skills, we were able to design a scheme which responded to the projects brief
along with the clients expectations”

Intelligent controller takes irrigation to the next level
A new high-tech control system enables landscape contractors to control customers’ irrigation systems from anywhere in the world.
Hydrawise is operated through a smartphone or tablet using an app available on iOS and Android, or through a web browser. The controller uses a home wireless internet connection to access real time data from local weather stations, and adjusts the sprinklers’ watering schedule to suit the conditions.
The Hydrawise controller can be retrofitted to existing
irrigation systems quickly and simply, enabling contractors to offer an efficient, effective managed watering and system management service to multiple customers in any location where they have internet access.
Plants and shrubs only receive the irrigation they need, providing water savings of up to 50% compared to a controller with a fixed schedule.
GreenMech’s open day success

Go greener with John Deere
John Deere’s new 4066M and 4066R compact tractors are meeting the green challenge in several ways, thanks mainly to the use of fully integrated diesel particulate filter (DPF) technology. This innovation results in reduced engine exhaust emissions and maintains the required performance levels to meet a wide range of customer needs, says the company.
These 66hp four-cylinder compact models benefit from the same technology used in larger John Deere agricultural tractors, which helps to reduce emissions compared to standard non-DPF engines. This ex-factory solution is also designed with service requirements in mind. Furthermore, easy tractor operation is provided by John Deere’s well established

(Nurseries) Ltd Enquiry 22Everris provides all-round package
Leeds United FC’s head groundsman Kiel Barrett has praised Everris for providing him with an all-round package - from products to customer service, which has helped create the pristine pitch at Elland Road.
Elland Road, the home of Leeds United FC, has been the club’s only stadium since its foundation in 1919.
“I’ve been using products from Everris now for just over two years and you can see the improvement they have made,” explains Kiel.
Kiel is tasked with maintaining not only the pitch at Elland Road but also the club’s training ground at Thorp Arch. As with most professional football club’s now, the training ground is built and
maintained to exactly replicate the club’s main playing pitch. To keep both premises in immaculate condition, Kiel relies upon a full Everris turf management programme which consists of a wide range of products including the likes of SierrablenPlus - a variety of granular controlled release fertilisers, Greenmaster liquid - a fast and effective way to directly give turfgrass available
nutrients when needed, ProTurf granular fertilisers - renowned for delivering a healthy and consistently growing turf for up to two months and Primo Maxx - an advanced, liquid plant growth regulator. Kiel works in conjunction with Everris’ technical area sales manager Simon Hardcastle, to devise the tailor-made programme.
Secure and durable granite sett re-pointing
The granite paving through the Peace Gardens in Sheffield has been refurbished for Sheffield City Council using GftK's vdw 850 Paving Joint Mortar from NCC Streetscape.
The highly durable granite was becoming loose and subject to damage due to the far less durable cement based jointing mortars used originally and for earlier repairs.
Whilst ‘traditional’ these are all highly sensitive to water, mixing and exposure to frost resulting in typical cracking and loss of strength problems.
The Council's Engineers and their Contractor found the ideal solution was the unique, epoxy resin bound sand based, vdw 850 Paving joint Mortar from NCC Streetscape.
This also enabled all of the work to be successfully completed without having to completely close any areas of the popular commuter routes through the gardens.
The areas were high pressure water jet cleaned, any loose stone setts re-fixed and then the joints were simply wet-slurry pointed with the vdw 850 jointing mortar, which selfcompacts into the joints.
The surface was rinsed, dry brushed-off and within a short period of time reopened – also with no delays for cold or wet weather.

Tennis club looking great for ATP event
The Northern Lawn Tennis Club, in West Didsbury, will be home to The Aegon Manchester Trophy, a men’s ATP challenger event in the first week of June. Whilst it is great news for the club, it’s created a lot of work for head groundsman Des Ruchwaldy and his team of one.
Preparation work started last autumn with the courts affected being fraise mowed, spiked, seeded and top-dressed - a full renovation in fact. In the previous season Des had used DLF’s Johnsons Sports Seeds J Court mixture, and had achieved such good results it was selected again for this renovation.
Not only did the mixture perform well in their soil conditions, but it also fulfilled the club’s policy of balancing quality against cost. The renovation was carried out in the second week of September
and, thanks to the warm temperatures and dry conditions, they had good coverage by early October. After the tournament they will irrigate, or let the rain get to it, and within a week the courts should be showing good signs of recovery – ready for the members to return playing on it.
The partnership with DLF/Johnsons goes back a few years to a time when there was a horrendous autumn at the club and no seed would germinate. Together they looked at cultivars, germination temperatures and came up with a forerunner to J Court which transformed the playing surfaces - Des was really impressed with the service and the relationship has continued ever since. When the switch to J Court happened the colour had never been better.

Britannia Rules with MM60 Grass Seed
As one of the oldest professional football teams in the world, Stoke City FC has long standing traditions and standards to uphold.
It is essential that the club has a playing surface in line with its historic reputation, which is why head groundsman Andrew Jackson has selected Limagrain UK’s MM60 grass seed.
The MM60 grass seed is a 100% Ryegrass formula which is perfect for renovation and divot repair. Renowned for its
extremely fast germination; MM60 has a high wear tolerance combined with a high disease resistance giving fantastic aesthetic qualities; something which Andrew is particularly pleased with.
Andrew initially trialled the seed at Stoke City’s academy set-up two seasons ago. After impressive results, he made the decision to apply it to all nine pitches - which are a combination of training areas and pitches added to the pitch at The Britannia. It is a decision
which Andy believes has really paid off. “The seed has had a big effect on all of our pitches. The sward density has also increased with more plants per square metre, which really helps in the recovery process after a match.
“I have found the product really good to work with from the grow-in period, due to the Headstart GOLD treatment. There is always good recovery from matches and training and recovery is really fast in the spring time,” he said.
Headstart GOLD is a further development of the wellrecognised Headstart treatment and has been developed using the latest scientific findings and field experience. It is a natural revolutionary grass seed treatment that ensures rapid germination and is perfect for enhancing performance on grass seed coatings for sports fields, golf courses, lawns and amenity turf.

Moortown stump grinds away its encroaching woodland
The 18 hole Moortown Golf Club in Leeds is steeped in history –100 years old and the first UK hosts of the Ryder Cup in 1929.
The course is surrounded by woodland that has seen an ingress of tree growth over those 100 years. Kevin Fox, Deputy Course Manager, and his team have slowly been reducing the woodland around the course with the help of Orange Plant and their range of Carlton stump grinders.
Over his 28 years at Moortown Kevin has had experience with other brands of stump grinders and says “they’re all very hard work”, however since coming across the Carlton range that’s changed.
“With their hydraulic systems and remote control,” he says, “they make the job much easier and quicker. I regularly hire the SP7015TRX model but have also had the SP5014TRX. The benefits of these self-propelled tracked units is that you can literally take them just about anywhere.
“There is some pretty uneven ground on the course, unstable terrain, but with the tracks you can take them anywhere. Whilst I regularly hire the larger 7015 model, the 5014 is still man enough.”

Neglected garden transformed with Gripsure
A Cornish B&B has transformed a neglected garden into an idyllic outdoor space for their guests to enjoy.
The garden features a large fiveby-eighteen-metre decked terrace, as well as walkways that lead through the garden around pounds, exotic plants and a waterfall feature.
The garden sits in a shaded valley and decking didn’t seem a viable option until the B&B owners came across Gripsure’s anti slip timber decking. “Because traditional timber decking can be dangerously slippery, we never imagined we would be able to use timber to achieve such a spectacular result,” they explained.
The owners opted for Gripsure Pro Classic, Gripsure’s original board profile. Made from sustainably sourced FSCapproved Scandinavian Redwood timber.
Gripsure decking gives the warm, natural look and feel of traditional decking but its antislip aggregate strips ensure it stays safe all year round, even in wet and icy weather.

Granite paving upgraded to meet modern demands
Historic Church Road in Hitchin is home to popular shops, pubs and restaurants, so it is nowadays subject to frequent traffic including heavy delivery trucks and brewery drays. The historic granite sett paving is incredibly durable and long-lasting, but the cement mortar jointing had deteriorated under this stress and had already been patched and replaced many times. However, now the road has been
refurbished by Hertfordshire Highways Engineers who specified vdw 855 Paving Joint Mortar from NCC Streetscape to be used. This followed a series of visits to other completed refurbishment projects and trial areas being laid in the road itself with all of the leading jointing products on the market. The vdw 855 Paving Joint Mortar is a stateof-the-art system specifically designed to accommodate heavy traffic loading and is easily installed as a self-compacting slurry, even at low temperatures and in the pouring rain if necessary. It then hardens rapidly to provide a highly durable surface that is fully resistant to mechanical road sweepers and freeze-thaw cycling in winter.

UK Enquiry 50Plan spring sprays for best control
Ms Sansom points out that understanding how glyphosate works can prove very helpful in understanding how performance varies in different situations.
Amenity managers and contractors should plan weed control operations carefully in catchy spring weather, warns Monsanto, manufacturer of the market-leading Roundup range of glyphosate herbicides.
Technical manager Manda Sansom explains: “Following a long, cold winter the spring of 2015 has seen pleasant warm spells in April and early May but with high diurnal temperature ranges and overnight frosts. Applying glyphosate too early can lead to reduced weed control.”
“Glyphosate works by leaf uptake and translocation to the growing points in both shoots and roots. Here it blocks the biochemical pathway producing amino acids - the building blocks for protein and causes a slow death by starvation.”
The variable weather can also slow the effects of herbicide applications. The latest development in Monsanto’s long history of continual product development helps amenity professionals meet the challenge of catchy conditions.
Roundup ProVantage is more concentrated at 480g glyphosate per litre and the optimised blend of surfactants as well as the high
loading makes it Monsanto’s most advanced amenity glyphosate.
Superior performance includes improved rainfastness and speed of uptake. Rainfast in one hour for annuals and four hours for perennials, Roundup ProVantage reduces the risk of run off from that unexpected shower and ensures the maximum amount of glyphosate reaches the roots for the optimum effectiveness.
Speedwell on Cabadex hitlist
Slender Speedwell Veronica filiformis is a perennial problem weed often encountered in sports turf situations. Headland Amenity’s Cabadex herbicide is already known for its ability to control difficult species including Yarrow, Daisy and White Clover on both established and young turf, but now successful trials over the last few years also led to label approval for use in combatting Slender Speedwell. Cabadex combines two active ingredients with different modes of action that provide both leaf and root uptake. Fluroxypyr is an auxinic herbicide that enters plants via the leaves and disrupts normal growth functions. Florasulam however, can enter via the roots as well as the foliage, helping to ensure complete distribution throughout the plant.
New formulation flies off shelves
The newly formulated Bayer product, Finale 150, is now available.
The product is used for controlling grasses and broadleaved weeds as well as preparing sports-turf for line-marking. And it’s selling fast.
It replaces the discontinued Finale 120 (MAPP 10092) product, which should no longer be in use.
Finale 150 is a new stronger product than the old Finale 120 and therefore the application rates on the label are lower.
According to Dave Orchard from Bayer, less of the product now needs to be applied: “The new formulation is supplied in the same sized five litre container as the old product, however the new formulation is stronger, meaning the application rates are lower, but with the same results.”
“It must only be applied using low drift nozzles and a sprayshield. Finale 150 will stay where it’s applied and won't drift onto other areas.”
The new formulation costs more per five litres, but due to the extra linear metres of application it works out at a similar cost per linear metre between the two formulations. “Popular with turf managers, the product is selling fast, and what we need to get across to our customers is that the linear metre application with the new formulation is the same,” adds Dave. Team Sprayers Enquiry 55The Rams praise spot-on CWC
Andy Croft - head groundsman at Derby County FC - has heaped praise on Complete Weed Control (East Midlands) as the UK’s leading sports and amenity weed control contractor enter their tenth year at working at Pride Park stadium.
Complete Weed Control undertakes all ‘spraying applications’ on the pitch and the training ground as well as the surroundings of the stadium.
The treatments eradicate all weeds and unsightly moss and the CWC team also apply regular monthly applications of fertilisers, soil amendments and fungicides.
Even though Andy and his grounds staff are fully trained in pesticide control and spraying, he believes that CWC’s contribution gives him one less thing to worry about and is far more cost effective. Obtaining the services of CWC removes the cost of risk assessments, saves you from keeping up-to-date with current legislation and cuts costs further by not having to acquire state-ofthe-art equipment.
“It certainly takes the pressure off and takes the hassle out of the job,” says Andy. “I also know that I can count on them; they have been absolutely spot on. If I wanted them to come in
tomorrow they would come in –they are that reliable.
“I’ve also got a great relationship with David Cox and the rest of the company which is just part and parcel of the service CWC
provide. I would definitely recommend Complete Weed Control to anyone looking for a specialist solution.”

SIS completes effective Giant Hogweed treatment
A Giant Hogweed infestation at South Norwood Country Park in Croydon, which was causing serious contamination of Chaffinch Brook, is being treated using equipment supplied by Stem Injection Systems (Europe).
Thames 21, one of the country's leading waterway charities, has invested in six to sets of stem injection equipment to treat this and other waterway sites where invasive, non-native plant species are a problem. Over the past four years, its 12-man treatment team has been fully trained in use of the equipment and problems such as this Giant Hogweed outbreak are part of its ongoing treatment work.
Vic Richardson, habitat and restorations officer at Thames 21, said: "Stem injection has proved the ideal treatment method and Stem Injection Systems has continued to provide valuable support and advice. The equipment enables us to identify isolated stands, inject glyphosatebased herbicide directly into each plant's hollow cane and avoid the potential watercourse contamination that might be caused by, for example, pesticide spraying methods. We rotate our treatment work every two or three weeks so we can monitor the results and inject any plants that were initially missed or treat any new Giant Hogweed growth. Last year in one half mile section of the river we probably treated some 200 plants, this year it's down to just 20 or 30. Although this suggests we have the Giant Hogweed infestation under control, we never underestimate the plant's ability to spread or become complacent about the scale of the treatment challenge."
Thames 21 has also successfully used the equipment to treat Japanese Knotweed, including recently on a large area of the River Pool in Sydenham.

Wipe out weeds with Wessex
Consider the alternative to spraying weeds and you could be looking at a fast and far more cost-effective method of wiping them out.
The concept of weedwiping was developed in New Zealand in the 1970’s and it offers a controlled method of targeting weeds.
A weedkiller chemical is coated onto a carpet roller which is wiped across the weeds, applying chemical to the underside of the leaf. It’s an ideal method for paddock, pasture and turfcare, using much less chemical than spraying and, as it targets the vulnerable undersidepart of the weed leaf, it hits it where it hurts without killing grass or clover.
The Wessex Weedwiper attaches to a standard ball hitch on an ATV, UTV or 4 x 4 and comprises a unique roller carpet mounted on a sturdy mainframe. There’s a large wheel at each end, one of which drives the roller rotation and the roller runs in the opposite direction to the travel of the Rotowiper to allow thorough coating of the underside of the leaf.
The machine is height adjustable to ensure all weed types and growth stages are catered for. A reliable pump transfers chemical from the tank to the carpet, coating it evenly and thoroughly to ensure the weed receives the right amount of lethal chemical. To see the flow of chemical being applied to the carpet roller
Weedingtech provides efficient solution across all surfaces
Quadron Services, an ISO 9001 accredited horticultural and grounds maintenance company with an herbicide reduction contract has found Weedingtech a successful and efficient solution to their work sites in the London Borough of Southwark, Southwark Park, Burgess Park, Peckham Park, Dulwich Park and Russia Dock Woodland.
With a specific focus on hard surfaces (cobblestones, limestone, tarmac) and soft surfaces (mulched shrub beds and tree pits), Quadron found the application of Foamstream particularly helpful in perennial and annual flower beds, a previously problematic area.
Terry Burns, senior contract manager at Quadron Services, says: “We have been using Foamstream for around nine months and it has been excellent
at treating all of our hard surface areas, especially on moss and near waterways.
“Our previous methods were costly and labour intensive, leaving us at risk to potential insurance claims from flying debris.”

Aitkens develops weed control solutions for fine turf
Holster XL Aitkens is a leading supplier of products to the sportsturf and landscaping industries and is very experienced with supplying effective weed control solutions.
One of the outstanding successes recently is Holster XL, a turf herbicide that has been specifically developed for the control of problem weeds in amenity turf (including fine turf).
Kilworth Machinery introduces remote control mowers
Holster XL has proved an excellent product which controls a range of 14 broad-leaved weeds including Yellow Suckling Clover, Slender Speedwell, Daisy and Common Mouse Ear. It is extremely gentle on grass - an important factor for the sports and fine turf industry.
Whether it’s the local team or a premiership club – all pitches come under scrutiny and attract criticism - not always constructive. So it is important to maintain the aesthetics of the
pitches as well as minimising surface disturbance.
Holster XL can be safely applied to new grass after only two months growth and it is an effective weed killer despite very low application rates. Once sprayed it is absorbed through the leaf of the plant and rapidly translocates through the stem and ultimately to the roots, killing the weed.
Its active ingredients are the officially approved Fluroxypyr 105g/ltr, 2,4-D 285g/ltr, Dicamba 52.5g/ltr.
In recent years Aitkens have launched the Award range. This range offers granular and liquid fertilisers, seaweeds, line marking liquids, irons and wetting agents which have been developed to be the best in the market.
Aitkensfor constant use in harsh environments and has 400mm of hydraulic side shift to assist with cutting up close to trees and fencing.
Two models have been introduced, the Green Climber and the Mini Green Climber. Both are designed to operate in areas that would be hazardous to an operator walking behind or sitting on a mower.
The Green Climber is available in 40HP and 50HP versions with Yanmar 4 cylinder diesel engines providing the power. A 1.3m cut flail mower is fitted as standard. The mower is designed and built
The flail mower is easily removed and other attachments can be mounted on the Green Climber. All Green Climbers are radio controlled by a robust and ergonomic hand held unit with joystick and push button control of all functions. Radio control range is 300m with automatic shut down outside this range.

Airion blows away competition
Three machines rolled into one
A sweeper collector that is a scarifier and a flail collector all rolled into one has to be on the wish list of most turf professionals.
In reality there is one in the shape of several models in the Wessex ProLine STC range. No longer are there the restrictions and costs of having individual machines to do each job, with the STC easily converted using the optional change kit.
So you might start off with the scarifier in the spring, adding in the flail when the fast growth begins and come the autumn fit the sweeper for clearing leaves and litter.
As a scarifier, the STC is fitted with with verti-cutting knives for a professional operation on the sports field or lawns. Semimounted to the tractor, the STC runs on its own four wheels, totally independent of the tractor,
allowing it to follow contours, while the front wheels are fully castoring and repositioned by a simple pin mechanism to adjust the working height.
As the whole machine is not lifted on the linkage, the STC can be operated behind a small tractor with limited lifting capacity. Power is transmitted from the tractor through a heavy cast gearbox and belt drive to the rotor. The rear wheels have flotation tyres to keep turf compaction to a minimum.
A large diameter steel drum with flails and paddles converts the Wessex STC to a flail collector. It features four rows of closely spaced flails, and two rows of draft paddles to create the suction for collecting the grass.
Unlike many collectors the STC has no narrow throat so long or short grass will be collected efficiently without blocking, even
in wet conditions. This makes it ideal for long grass applications such as the rough on golf courses.
In the autumn you can take the STC to the park in sweeper collector mode. The brush rotor comprises four banks of hardwearing polypropylene bristles which lift leaves, grass clippings and litter with ease into the hydraulically operated hopper.
The bristles are secured firmly into a pre-drilled hardwood strip and are of a generous length to give a good ‘flick’ action to ensure the material is thrown to the back of the hopper. The Wessex ProIine STC is available in 1.2m and 1.8m working widths for the maintenance of amenity turf, golf courses, parkland and large gardens.
The Airion Blower is a great example of Pellenc’s innovative electrical technology in providing a smooth, quiet and powerful operation every time.
Weighing in at just 2.5kg, the Pellenc Airion is one of lightest blowers on the marketplace and is perfect for use near noisesensitive areas such as hospitals, schools, camp sites and towns.
The Pellenc Airion is fitted with a 4-level speed selector that optimises and adjusts the speed of the air propelled according to the working environment. It also features an instant boost mode that delivers a maximum power of 750 W which is extremely useful when removing wet vegetation or heavy waste.
Its protective grill is removable and interchangeable which makes for easy maintenance, and with
savings of least £6 per day in petrol, it’s no wonder that more and more people are embracing Pellenc’s electrical technology.
The Pellenc Airion blower can be used near noise-sensitive areas such as hospitals, schools, camp sites and towns. It is also perfectly suitable as a cleaning tool for roads alongside sweepers at any time of the day and it works just as effectively as a replacement for the traditional sweeper in towns as it does in parks and gardens.
The progressive trigger enables the airflow to be controlled very precisely. The principal advantage is efficient battery management.
On roads, the trigger can prevent the scattering of gravel. The inlet grille has been specially designed to reduce the sound level as much
as possible while maintaining exceptional blowing performance. Lithium ion technology combined with the Pellenc motor means that the Airion emits very little CO² into the environment, giving the tool a very clean image.
Comparing the direct emissions of CO² of the Airion with a petrol blower, the difference is enormous. A petrolengine blower has a direct emission of over 4 tonnes of CO² per year while the Airion only emits 47 kg.
The Airion prevents almost 99% of the direct emissions of a petrol engine. If Pellenc batteries are recharged with the recently launched Solerion solar charger, direct CO² emissions are totally eliminated.
Makita expands twin 18v tools range
Etesia UK Enquiry78
Makita has introduced more tools for grounds care and horticultural operations that are powered by twin 18v Lithium-ion batteries designed to deliver 36volt performance.
Many grounds maintenance professionals and landscapers already have a number of Makita 18v Li-ion batteries with their Makita power tools and as they are compatible they can be used to generate 36v energy.
Until now adaptor plates have been available to facilitate two batteries
but the new machines now have the machine bodies designed to directly accommodate the twin 18v batteries as a standard feature. By harnessing the power of two 18v batteries on one machine the overall power amperage produced is actually higher than that of the single 36v battery.
Newly released products benefiting from the new Makita twin battery range include a leaf blower.
The new DUB361 LXT 2-speed blower will produce 4.4 cubic
metres of air per minute with an air speed of 93 metres per second.
In low setting the twin batteries will give 51 minutes run time.
The DUH551 LXT hedge trimmer has a convenient 550mm double-sided blade that will run up to 1,800 strokes per minute and cut up to 18mm diameter branches. It has five alternative handle positions and variable speed control.

A number of other components such as the brush hood, spout position and suction hose have also been altered for maximum usability. Within the S-Line range are load capacities from 8m3 up to 20m3
The Grass Group Enquiry 81Cleaning up with Etesia
With economy in mind, Etesia has a wide range of attachments which enable their Hydro ride-on mowers to carry out many tasksall-year-round.
One of the most popular accessories is the front-mounted sweeper for cleaning roadways, car parks, pathways, playgrounds and other hard surfaces. This
attachment can be fitted to either the Hydro 100 or Hydro 124 models – turning a ride-on mower into a 365-days-a-year workhorse.
Powered by the ride-on's engine, and hydraulically driven via the PTO, the brush covers the full working width of the host machine. No special tools are required to fit the unit directly on to the mower's front-mounted linkage. The brush can also be angled left or right according to the mode or work.
The polypropylene bristles are extremely hard wearing and very tough to ensure a firm scrub on pavements and other hard surfaces where they efficiently remove grime, debris and moss. There is an optional side rotary brush for clearing awkward areas, such as gutters and gullies.
All rubbish is swept into the optional collection box and there is a dust protector for use when the brush is used without the box.

STM highlights range of SCAG solutions
SCAG has taken on the manufacture of a well-established range of blowers and vacuums and STM will be including them as part of their sales range.
SCAG decided to take on the manufacture of blowers and vacuums to complement their well-known and well-respected range of mowers and purchased the “Giant-Vac” company. There then followed a long development period whilst they rationalised existing design and manufacturing in keeping with the acknowledged high standard of SCAG build.
Next in the range are the wheeled Classic and Extreme “cyclone” type blower types. There are three in the Giant-Vac range, all featuring comfort-grip handlebars that house the throttle control and selector for discharge direction. Motors go up through the range from 5.7 to 11.7HP, delivering CFM rates from 1392 up to 2824.
Wiedenmann’s focused R&D has made sure that efficiency, H&S and capacity are given equal priority.
Versatility is also key meaning Wiedenmann kit can work across the season giving favourable cost per use performance.
Take collectors for example, Wiedenmann’s Super 600 is a three-in-one flail mower, collector and verticutter. Such an offering instantly suits amenity managers who find by investing in just one machine they can cover off a multitude of tasks.
For those whose tricky terrain hampers journeys back and forward to empty loads, the massive 4500 litre tank means that it takes a lot longer to fill and consequently needs less time
spent emptying. Even its sister model, the Super 500 boasts a very respectable 2500 litre tank. The 2.1 metre high dump facility comes as standard to both and has infinitely variable settings, allowing easy tipping into bins
and trailers when discharge eventually is required.
When it comes to material collection systems, Wiedenmann’s MCS Favorit and MCS XP collectors come in four sizes with hoppers at 600, 850, 100 and 1500 litres.
The Favorit with its distinctive looking whisper fan is one of the quietest and most productive compact collectors around while the bigger XP fits all makes of tractors with either a midmounted or front mounted deck. Common to all are robust steel hoppers and options for low and high tilt dump as well as wander hoses and electromechanical fill indicators.
Moving
The second development is an electrical operation to the nozzle. This new facility allows tractors with just one double spool valve to operate the “left to right” swivel action hydraulically and the “up and down” motion via an electric ram thus not requiring a second hydraulic service which is not always standard.
Finally the RK 120 Z is semimounted sweeping machine which sweeps and collects cut grass effortlessly de-thatching at the same time, removing everything that could spoil or damage the surface. It has a cylinder broom equipped with four brush rails that can be precisely adjusted to the ground.
They are distributed in the UK by STM Co Ltd. Starting with the Consumer Vac: This is a pedestrian unit for “direct capture” of leaves and debris in the easy-to-remove 280 litre capacity bag. The intake nozzle is 650mm wide, and can be easily adjusted for height and angle from the handlebars.
STM have found the next-up TL20W tow-behind unit has found favour, with a major Council, for example, having just purchased four in one go. The range is 26.5 / 29HP with a handheld and supported 12” dia hose and overhead discharge chute leading to an 8” dia flexible steel tube. CFM rate is 4680. The unit has two large wheels at the back and a jockey wheel on the trailer hitch.

Greens aeration made easy with ATT
Greens aeration is one of the fundamental maintenance activities that should be conducted on a frequent basis.
Two cassettes within the ATT TMSystem, SMARTSarel and SMARTSpiker, are designed for effective aeration and can be used on standard triplex greens mowers and ATT’s own pedestrian unit, the INFiNiSystem.
Regular use of a Sarel roller will prevent sealing with minimal disruption to the surface. It can be used up to a depth of 20mm (0.8in) so provides a perfect solution to shallow tining. It is also a useful tool for use after top-dressing, helping to integrate the sand into the turf canopy.
Whilst using the same basic principles as the SMARTSarel,
the SMARTSpiker cassette provides an equally effective method of reducing surface sealing for those turf managers who prefer an elongated form as opposed to a circular pattern on their turf. It is a fast and cost effective method of aeration with the triplex able to operate at transport speed.
The TMSystem is ATT’s flagship product and was developed some 10 years ago. The carrier chassis is interchangeable between common makes of Triplex mowers as well as ATT’s pedestrian unit, the INFiNiSystem. The system can carry out aeration, brushing, dethatching, scarifying, top dressing, grooming, levelling and mowing through the use of 10 SMART cassettes.
Make more of aeration with differing
Aeration is a topic that all Groundsmen and Greenkeepers are concerned with, especially doing it properly.
Dougie Archibald of Charterhouse Turf Machinery says it’s something that shouldn’t be approached with complacency and explains the machinery alternatives, and different approaches, that should be taken depending on the desired outcome or time of year.
“Demands placed on sport surfaces have never been higher; which makes an effective aeration and maintenance regime even more essential,” says Dougie. “We all know about Verti-Draining and its benefits, but using your Verti-Drain should be seen as a year-round activity.
“Using the Verti-Drain with a range of different tine options can make the most of deeper work done during the autumn and winter months. Micro-tining can be employed during drier weather to help keep the surface from “capping” over and allow surface water a path down through the profile - maintaining healthier top growth.”
Dougie says another process to think about is linear aeration using something like the Redexim range of Verti-Quake aerators.
These are available in a range of working widths and perform the majority of their work under the
surface by means of fissuring and the breaking up of the soil profile. This allows channels for water and moisture to travel through the soil and link up with the deeper Verti-Drain work.
The unique make-up of the VertiQuake range, with its wave action
which shatters soil laterally, allows for almost zero surface disruption meaning the turf is able to accommodate play immediately.
Another complimentary aeration technique and machine is the Redexim Verti-Knife. This machine comes fitted with either
two rows of mini discs, ideal for close intensive work on greens or tees, or larger discs ideal for fairways and wider areas where extra depth can be achieved.

Multivator is made for sports turf
The BLEC Multivato is a sports turf renovation implement that recycles buried soil around the root zone, bringing it up to the surface and then incorporating it back into the root structure.
In one pass, the Multivator eliminates the need to import materials, saving you time and money. The machine works on the principle of specially designed, closely spaced, carbide faced blades that slit and lift the soil to recycle it, leaving any unwanted stones buried for a clean finish.
The depth is controlled by employing a flat skid frame and, once lifted, the soil dressing is
incorporated back into the surface by a drag brush. There is an optional hydraulic brush also available and the Multivator can be operated only as a rotary decompacter if needed simply by fitting optional smooth blades. A seed hopper can also be fitted for one-pass overseeding.
The Multivator comes in both a compact/mid version as well as a heavy duty one. The Multivator Heavy Duty is designed for contractors whose work requires a long-life high production machine. It will both de-compact and recycle the soil and features close blades spaced at 20cm (optional 10cm) with a heavy duty skid plate and a four-speed
gearbox with a side gear drive –there are no chains.
The special blades will penetrate down to 20cm to lift the soil to the surface. This version will produce up to 100kg of recycled soil per 100 sq metres and has as standard
a hydraulic rotary brush, with optional blades for de-compacting only, and an optional seed hopper. The Multivator Heavy Duty is designed to operate with tractors from 70 -125hp.
BLEC Enquiry 93ShockWave scores top marks at Glasgow High
Since introducing the Imants ShockWave aerator to his maintenance programme, Head Groundsman at Glasgow High School David Miller, has not had to cancel a single rugby match through water-logging. David is responsible for five natural grass pitches at the prestigious Glasgow High School where the predominant sport is rugby. This is appropriate in view of the fact that the Glasgow Accies Rugby Club is located right next door. The Imants ShockWave is a linear decompactor designed to remove surface water and revitalise heavy wear areas by relieving soil compaction, improving aeration and removing surface water.
The blade action has a unique double function; it slices through the soil profile creating a slit while at the same time pushing the soil from left to right as it travels. This sideways movement breaks up the compaction and aerates the soil both vertically and horizontally to a depth of 120mm to 530mm depending on the model. When using the Imants ShockWave to treat an area it will create a surface and soil structure that drains well and remains dry, with minimal impact on the playing surface so play can be resumed soon after treatment.

Classen aids turf care with machinery
Schiller Groundscare have launched their lawncare package featuring the Classen Turf Rakes, Aerators and Overseeders.
The benefits of aeration are clear, with the improved air exchange between the soil and the atmosphere, enhanced water uptake and getting nutrients and oxygen to the grass roots. Core removal will improve fertilisation, while reducing water runoff and puddling, leading to stronger rooting.
Soil compaction is reduced and heat and drought tolerance is enhanced. The Classen Aerators are self-propelled, feature operator friendly
controls and are solidly built to last for professional turf care. The new Reciprocating Aerator doesn’t use hydraulics to independently drive the tines, making the controls exceptionally simple to use.
The core tines reciprocate at 450 revolutions per minute, covering up to 26,000 sq ft per hour and the aerator is designed to punch cleaner holes in tough soil without additional weights. Again, this machine has lifting and tie down handles for easy transportation.
Newport Golf Club gets green treatment
The course at Newport Golf Club in South Wales is fairly flat and sits about three hundred feet above sea level.
It is in the winter that four of the wettest greens are most likely to be put out of use and Terrain Aeration was called in to treat these in a day-long trial.
Treatment applied using the Terralift machine was on normal two metre spacing to a depth of one metre. Dense red clay was encountered at about 700mm which was penetrated after a short period of hammering and dried, milled seaweed was injected to maintain aeration. It was found the surfaces of the four greens were very tender so only
an eight bar pressure was used, producing a ripple of movement but leaving the greens undamaged. The probe holes were then backfilled to within 75mm of the top, using Lytag aggregate. A plug of the club’s preferred top dressing was then added to each hole.
All that remained to be done was a quick clean up with a leaf blower to remove any debris and a pass with the greens iron. The greens were back in play, with the whole process taking just two hours per green, and before they were even finished there was a noticeable improvement to the firmness of each green. With the problem solved Terrain Aeration learned they would be returning
to Newport in the autumn to treat the rest of the greens on the course as well as doing some one metre depth soil coring to establish the actual profile under the greens.

School chooses SISIS TM1000 for renovations
Andy Richards, Grounds Manager at Shrewsbury School, one of the country’s leading independent schools, has recently purchased a new SISIS Rotorake TM1000 complete with a range of interchangeable reels to complete end of season renovations.
The new machine, which was delivered by Jim Clarke Machinery, will be used by Andy and his team of grounds staff on not just the football, rugby and lacrosse pitches for
end of season renovations but also the cricket wickets.
The SISIS Rotorake TM1000 is a tractor mounted heavy duty scarifier and linear aerator which removes and controls thatch on fine and other quality turf.
“We are starting our autumn renovations on our cricket squares and have decided to fraise mow the surface to remove the organic matter. To do this we’ve been using the SISIS
TM1000 with the fraise mowing reel,” said Andy.
“We will also use it on our lacrosse pitch and our rugby pitch to verticut and thin out unwanted growth and not only do we fraise mow our cricket squares but we also scarify our junior squares. All of this is possible with the TM1000 because of the new interchangeable reels; meaning one machine can carry out a number of different jobs.”
Combat compaction with a Wiedenmann Terra Spike
Compaction problems brought about by heavy traffic are common.
Areas most prone are goal mouths, centre circles or drop zones while spongy thatch can be particularly prevalent on golf courses at green approaches, walk off and access points.
Without doubt compaction and thatch are best remedied by a programme of deep aeration. Wiedenmann is well known in the industry for manufacturing quality deep tine aerators; its fleet of ten Terra Spikes has a range of depth from 220 mm to 400 mms considerably deeper than any of the shallow aerators in the marketplace and their very action loosens and lifts the soil deep below the surface.
Each model is designed to do the same job; it will help create an environment where grass roots can develop.
Terra Spikes relieve the ground from compaction, let air pass through the soil, improve drainage, and they can be used to facilitate a soil exchange programme. The extensive range suits different applications and tractor types; each model can be fitted with a complete programme of solid and hollow tines.
No tools are required to make alterations to depth and heave settings. All Terra Spikes have a QuickSet Heave control which achieves a 25 degree heave range.
Wiedenmann Enquiry 103Tracmaster launches new compact CAMON
Designed and manufactured at Tracmaster’s UK-based headquarter, the new CAMON LA25 lawn aerator builds on the success of the LA20, but is a more compact machine with faster operation.
Ideal for removing sub-surface thatch and relieving compaction on a lawn, the CAMON LA25 aerator is built to Tracmaster’s exacting standards, ensuring it delivers a high level of performance and has the ability to survive the rigours of a professional working environment.
At only 66cm (26”) wide, the streamline CAMON LA25 aerator fits easily through all garden gates and is fitted with
John Deere aerators for maximum productivity
John Deere’s A40 and V40 PrecisionCore pedestrian aerators are ideal for golf greens and other fine turf areas.
A patented articulating frame delivers more consistent hole depth on undulating terrain, and operators can now change hole spacing on the move.
The aerators also feature a tighter turning circle, for sharper, quicker turns, and are available with an optional verticutter attachment for aerating and verticutting the turf in one pass. A redesigned operator station provides easier control of the machines, as well as reduced levels of handlebar vibration.
To match the performance standards of these new aerators, John Deere has also launched a range of top quality Precision Tines for use on greens, tees, fairways and roughs.
John Deere Enquiry 104foam-filled tyres to eliminate punctures and to reduce tread marks on the lawn.
An added advantage of the LA25 is that it is supplied with both hollow corer tines and solid spikes as standard, while the ‘offset’ crank operating system allows the power of the engine to punch the tines deep into the ground, resulting in perfect aeration.
Another convenient feature is that the tines are located at the rear of the machine, ensuring they are easy to access and can be changed in less than 5 minutes.
Every CAMON machine is built to last and offers key features including toughness, reliability,
safety and ease of use. Longestablished as a firm favourite with the hire industry, Tracmaster is continually improving and developing the existing range, as well as designing and manufacturing new equipment, and has succeeded in producing a range of groundcare and lawncare machines which is equally popular with both professional and domestic users.
“We feel that the new LA25 aerator will be a very popular addition to our CAMON range of groundcare machinery,” comments Alex Pitt, Managing Director at Tracmaster.
“Not only will its compact size make it convenient for manouevring through narrow
garden gates, but it has the added benefit of being able to work with both hollow corer tines and solid spikes – a real bonus for users.”

Enquiry 105Makita expands petrol grounds maintenance range
Giving value back and protecting the environment
Xtraction is taking a fresh approach to solving a growing problem – the ethical disposal of all-weather pitches.
As well as being costly, the removal of old pitches can be significantly detrimental to the environment. Materials that could be re-used are often dumped –wasting natural resources and leading to unnecessary transportation costs and pollution.
By reclaiming and re-using materials on site, Xtraction minimises the environmental impact and returns value to customers. The company demonstrated the effectiveness of this process with spectacular
results at Mayfield School, in Redbridge, London, which needed to replace a surface that did not meet the Football Association’s guidelines.
Xtraction reclaimed and reused 156 tons of infill, resulting in savings of around £16,000 – and eliminated the need for an estimated 19 lorries to remove it.
The carpet, also a valuable commodity, will be re-used in public access areas at Twickenham during the Rugby World Cup later this year – and will be available to other customers after that.
Enquiry 108
Makita continues to expand its petrol engine range of grounds maintenance, landscaping and gardening equipment for horticulture and grounds maintenance operators.
Three new machines are joining the recently introduced 4-stroke EN4951SH pole hedge trimmer which has immediately proved popular with major ‘green service’ contractors in the UK.
The three new machines are the 4-stroke PLM4817 mulching lawnmower which has a 48cm width of cut; the 2-stroke ER2600L, clean emissions, bentshaft linetrimmer and the powerful PM7651H back-pack mist blower designed for efficient delivery of chemical fungicides for tree and brassica crops.
Onneley Greenkeeper is a surprise winner
Onneley Golf Club in Cheshire was the lucky winner of GreenTek’s recent prize draw for a set of three Dyna-Seeder overseeding units to fit their greens mower. For Head Greenkeeper Colin Hayward, it was a total surprise, as his Captain had entered the club into the draw without even telling him.
The club will now be able to use the Dyna-Seeder units to provide a unique solution for quickly and discreetly overseeding their greens
throughout the playing season.
The Dyna-Seeders’ vibratory spiker mechanisms open up thousands of neat holes, into which the grass seeds are carefully planted, to ensure maximum germination and minimum wastage of expensive seed.
Through regular use clubs can significantly improve the sward composition in their greens, to create a much more healthy and hardwearing playing surface.
AFC Bournemouth’s pitch is one of best thanks to Toro
AFC Bournemouth’s newly renovated pitch has just been nominated as one of the top three in the Championship by worldleading sports turf consultancy, STRI – a feat that Cherries’ grounds manager James Lathwell says is thanks, in part, to the club’s Toro ProCore aerator.
Having loaned a ProCore 648 prior to the Goldsands Stadium pitch renovation last summer, James explains that it worked so
efficiently, he has now made the decision to purchase one.
“We trialled the Toro ProCore from Lely UK at a time when we were having issues with the old pitch. Last season’s heavy rainfall meant we were really battling with the elements, but the ProCore kept the football ground playable throughout wet periods and saved fixtures,” he says.
Although renovating the pitch has helped alleviate this problem, with new pitches prone to compaction, James is as delighted with the ProCore’s results on the old and new pitch alike, and he’s not the only one.
“We’ve been receiving compliments all year on the new pitch,” says James. “After every game, the referee and away team manager score the pitch and send
their scores to the STRI. There are three teams with the highest scores at the end of the season and we’ve been nominated as one of the top three in the Championship, which is a great testament to the ProCore.”
Designed as a two-step process, the ProCore’s new Titan QuickChange tine head provides increased flexibility when tines need to be changed and dramatically reduces the time spent on tine change-out.
Alongside time-saving benefits, clean-up is also easier and less labour intensive with the ProCore; an additional benefit that hasn’t gone unnoticed by the club’s groundstaff. “Our previous aerator created a lot of mess. With our new machine, there is no mess, which is fantastic for myself and the team,” James adds.
With time and labour saved and a pitch that’s now one of the best in the Championship, James concludes that the club’s ProCore purchase has proved to be a great investment.
SMARTSarel roller cassettes introduced at club
No stranger to the ATT TMSystem Steven Connolly, course manager at Kirby Muxloe Golf Club, has introduced the SMARTSarel cassettes into his regular maintenance regime.
Whilst he has only been at Kirby Muxloe for seven months the Sarel rollers, supplied by The Grass Group, have quickly become an integral part in his maintenance regime.
They are used once every two weeks to work in whatever product is used to top dress the surface. “The key,” he says, “is
to open it up, stop it sealing and work in the material.
“As we manage to add other SMART cassettes, especially the SMARTVibe unit, the system will play an even bigger part in our greens maintenance work. We have the common TMSystem chassis so adding to the cassette list is just a question of budget, but I’m hoping that every six months will see a new set in the shed.”
The Grass Group Enquiry 113Increased capacity from Ryetec
Ryetec’s Professional series flail scarifier collectors have always been good value for money. But the new CHE models, which are basically the proven ground tip machines with a larger capacity hopper and have the ability to lift to 1.85 metres and tip at any height in between from ground level up, offer tremendous value against most of the more cumbersome and less manoeuvrable trailed or semi trailed machines on the market. The machines are ideal for sports fields, conservation areas and any area requiring cutting or scarifying and collecting.

Tractors take great strides
The latest crop of groundcare tractors feature state of the art engine technology and offer greater cab comfort and versatility. Jane Carley takes a look at what’s new and at the wide range of applications for these machines.
As part of a wholesale upgrade of the McCormick tractor range, seven new models have been developed for sports and amenity groundscare applications.
The McCormick X4 Series is a small full-size tractor design with power outputs from 64hp to 107hp and a wide choice of specifications to suit different applications and budgets.
Notable features include optional creeper gears and ground drive power take-off for specialist turf maintenance machinery; a lowrevs Eco 40kph transmission option for more fuel-efficient road travel; and a new cab design that is spacious yet compact.
“The designers at Argo Tractors have given the McCormick X4 Series cab a lot of attention to ensure it provides a comfortable and practical workplace,” says Paul Wade, product specialist at distributor AgriArgo UK. “It’s quite a challenge making a cab to fit a small tractor that’s in proportion but gives the operator plenty of space and good visibility – but the X4 designers have achieved that.”
The novel idea of housing the cab air filters in the rear pillars makes them easy to reach for cleaning and results in a slim roof panel for low overall height – the four smallest models measure just over 2.4m to the top of the cab, while the three larger machines, which have a slightly longer wheelbase to maintain balance and traction with bigger implements, stand only a little taller at 2.5m.
Mechanical control of the 3.4-3.9 tonne lift capacity rear linkage can be upgraded to electronic operation on the three most powerful models, with a 1.75 tonne front linkage and pto also available on these models for added productivity.
Two- or four-wheel drive, cab or open platform, and a choice of synchro shuttle and power shuttle transmissions add to the specification mix.
Latest Deutz engines with simple emissions control technology feature under the bonnet of the 64hp X4.20C, 69hp X4.30C and 76hp X4.40C but, unusually, the
75hp X4.35C has a Perkins diesel to earlier emissions rules, which gives it a distinct price advantage over the 76hp X4.40C while engine stocks last, points out McCormick.
New designs
Ransomes Jacobsen has introduced a new series of TG tractors, ideal for municipal and contractor grounds maintenance applications.
The new TG6 series, replacing the current TG5, features a range of four compact tractors – the TG6370 IQ, TG6400 HST, TG6490 IQ and TG6490 HST. The TG6370 IQ and TG6400 HST are powered by Iseki threecylinder, liquid cooled diesel engines, developing 36 and 39hp respectively. Both TG6490 variants feature a four-cylinder Iseki engine developing 48hp.
A new ergonomic design with a smoother profile provides better access to the engine compartment and a new cab offers more space, more headroom, wider opening doors and air-conditioning. ROPS is also available on all models.
The IQ transmission models have three ranges, each with eight forward/reverse gears and feature
two dual clutches for quick and smooth gear changes. An automatic mode changes the top four gears automatically, especially useful when towing or when on the public highway.
The contoured nose improves visibility; modern combination switches and controls have been employed and there’s a soft feel steering wheel, hydrostatic power steering and two-mode adjustable PTO engagement. The main controls are located in a console on the right-hand side of the operator platform and a shuttle lever controlling forward/backward travel is located on the steering column.
Lifting capacity starts with 1270kg (at ball ends) for the TG6400 rising to 1700kg on the TG6490 IQ. Optional midmounted side discharge rotary cutting decks are available with 1.52 metres and 1.83 metre cutting widths.
Innovation continues John Deere’s latest 5G Series tractor line-up features 3.2 and 4.5 litre Stage IIIA engines with a rated power of 75, 85 or 100hp, plus a choice of two- or fourwheel drive.
The 5GF, 5GN and 5GV Series tractors offer customers an open operator station or a redesigned cab, plus a wide range of transmission, PTO and hydraulic options.
Transmissions range from a twowheel drive 12F/12R speed box up to a four-wheel drive 24F/12R PowrReverser transmission;
There’s a choice of 540/540E or 540/1000 PTO including ground drive. The open centre hydraulic
system supplies up to 122.5 litres/min hydraulic flow; a joystick provides fingertip control of implements when using the electro-hydraulic SCV option.
Maximum lift capacity is 2590kg as standard, or with additional lift cylinders can be increased to 3100kg. The operator can manually adjust the implement to keep it level to the ground, useful when working on slopes.
Lely UK has introduced the new T754 to its line-up of TYM tractors available in the UK.
With a 74hp Deutz engine and improved emissions standards, the T754 offers enhanced performance and engineering excellence.
Lely’s national sales manager Jeff Anguige explains: “The T754 is a great addition to our range of TYM tractors. The chassis is the same size as our 60hp models, but has more horsepower and a hitch capacity of 2327kg. Emission standards are also greatly improved on this model, with the T754 meeting Tier 4.”
Other features include a dual air cleaner, an intuitive digital instrument panel and a position/draft control and onetouch PTO on/off control.
The T754’s tyres can be ordered to spec, with options including turf, industrial and agricultural treads.
Compact range Kioti’s latest line of compact tractors sold through UK importer, RECO, is the new DK series, which includes models with 45, 50 and 55hp engines that meet current Tier 3 and Tier 4 emission regulations.
These models are offered with rear mounted ROPS on the standard width model or midmounted ROPS on the narrow-width models.
A 16x16 speed manual gear box featuring a synchronized shuttle and the maximum forward speed has been increased to 34kph. This mechanical H-Shuttle system, which has been used extensively in Europe and North America, is a fatigue-cutting device similar to Kioti’s power shuttle that can help to reduce clutch wear by enabling the operator to change direction without use of the clutch.
DK10 models feature a quick turn front axle function that can be selected to automatically increase front wheel speed once the steering angle has exceeded 35 degrees.
This function, combined with hydraulic controlled 4WD, provides a much tighter turning radius and helps to reduce disturbance to soil and turf. All models feature 4WD, with 2WD and 4WD electronically engaged using a dash mounted switch.
DK tractors include a heavy duty three point linkage to offer 1360kg lift capacity and adjustable check chains to limit the movement of the rear mounted implement. The new height adjustable rear hitch design allows for greater flexibility for attaching trailers and towing capacity has been increased to 4300kg.
Fresh styling features highly visible gauges, projector headlights and a high intensity bright dash display to clearly provide the operator with all the essential information.
A one-piece bonnet design gives easy access to the engine for routine checks or service work and the 45 litre fuel tank has been designed with a low level fill point.
Latest addition to Massey Ferguson’s compact range is the MF1700 which replaces the two top models in the MF1500 series, the MF1540 and MF1547.
Featuring 38 and 46hp engines, the MF1740 and MF1747 can be specified with a 12x12 synchro or hydrostatic transmission – the latter version available with a cab. Lift capacity is 1400kg and hydraulic flow 75 litres/min, so these tractors are suitable for use
with a wide range of groundcare implements. Agricultural tread or turf tyres can be specified.
Cruise control and soft engage pto make for greater ease of use, and MF1700 tractors are delivered ‘loader-ready’ with a fitted joystick for the recommended Lewis loader.
For purchasers looking for a more traditional workhorse, the new MF4700 series is designed as a platform tractor, but can be specified with turf tyres. Powered by a 3.3-litre AGCO Power threecylinder engine, the MF4708 and MF4709 models, offer 85hp and 95hp respectively. A 65 litre/min pump powers hydraulic implements and lift capacity is 3000kg, with electronic linkage control and single speed 540 rpm Independent PTO.
The spacious open platform has a folding ROPS for work under low branches and easier access to buildings and polytunnels.
Capable and durable Adrian Langmead, Business Development Manager for Kubota UK’s groundcare division suggests that those looking to invest in new machinery solutions require products that can provide the right level of versatility and reliability. “Ultimately, operators want machines they can trust and depend on to get the job done, with minimal to no downtime, whatever the application,” he says.
“Our new STW Series for example, which was launched at the start of this year, are the most
powerful of all of Kubota’s compact machines. Available in 34-40hp, this compact tractor range offers the fastest maximum travel speed in its class for increased productivity, along with Kubota’s Bi-Speed turn feature to enable tighter turns and reduced turf damage.”
Another recently launched Kubota range that is going from strength to strength is the B50 Series.
“Available in four models from 20-31hp, the B50 Series delivers outstanding productivity when carrying out a multitude of tasks from mowing to front loader and trailer work,” Adrian comments.
Kubota-built 54 and 60in midmounted mower decks are also available, as well as a host of rearmounted implements, which allow users to customise their machine to perform the range of duties required, meaning groundcare professionals are able to centre their workload around the compact tractor and avoid spending on expensive additional kit which
may only be used for a few weeks in the year, he points out.
Bank tractors
Aebi has also updated its fourwheeled ride-on bank tractors with a newly designed cabin and controls on the TT206/TT211. Designed for safe operation on steep terrain, the tractors offer all-round visibility, front-wheel, rear-wheel and all-wheel steering which can be selected on-the move, and hydrostatic drive for improved control and braking action.
Vibration damping prevents shock loads when transporting mounted implements and low ground pressure protects turf.
Aebi has added the new CC110 to its Combicut two-wheel tractor range.
With its continuously variable hydrostatic transmission, active steering and the Aebi quick implement attachment mechanism this model is based on the larger Aebi comfort single-axle machines.
The Aebi CC110 is ideally suited to working on extremely steep slopes, says the company, with its light weight, compact dimensions and 8hp engine. Its standard finger-bar mower has a working width of 1.75 metres and the Aebi
quick implement attachment mechanism allows various different types of implements to be attached without tools, allowing use for applications from grass cutting to snow clearance.

The Commander also features a PowerSafe clutch and an assisted hydraulically controlled steering system. It has two speed ranges (slow/fast) and an automatic parking brake with manual release mechanism for forced manoeuvres.
The engines fitted include a Honda GX390 Alps 11.7 HP petrol engine, a Briggs & Stratton Vanguard 16 HP two-cylinder petrol engine and a Yanmar LN100 10 HP diesel engine prepared for use on steep slopes.
“This versatile machine is capable of many different tasks in a range of environments, particularly conservation areas, and can be fitted with a wide range of attachments, including cutter bars, heavy-duty mowers and lawn mowers,” comments Alex Pitt,

Multi-tasking Metrac
Bishop Auckland-based contractor Cleartrack has had its 70hp Reform Metrac H7SX for a year and proprietor Richard Batson says, “It has really proved itself to be a year round multi-use piece of kit for our business.”
“We chose the H7SX because it packs the optimum power into the size of tractor we can transport on our 7.5 tonne lorry and the standard Metrac rating for safe operation at up to 45 degree angles, combined with superb all round visibility, has been a real plus where operator safety is concerned.”
First year attachment usage of the front and back pto has alternated between a Muthing flail mower, log splitter, winch, a McConnel side arm flail for hedge and grass work, plus a snow blade.
“The bulk of our work is for local authorities and
maintaining steep banks for both Northumbrian Water and the Environment Agency and I can say we have had no negative issues with the H7SX. It really is the ideal combination of compact size, power and year round performance, and for me, it does prove the point you get what you pay for,” says Richard Batson.
Simon Richard, UK Agent for the Reform range adds: “Local authority users will be attracted by the range of work tasks the H7SX offers them. A low centre of gravity combined with constant power hydrostatic drive provides maximum ground contact and the suspended front axle ensures that all four wheels have permanent ground contact even on uneven terrain. Additionally an inching pedal means the operator can work around trees, shrubs etc with confidence.”
Nimble Volcan is contractor choice
A compact frame and clear visibility to work in safety on 3m high bunds is combined with plenty of muscle in the 92hp BCS Volcan 950, supplied by Kilworth Machinery. Contractor David Cliffe undertakes mowing work for Lafarge, and he explains: “Mowing alongside quarries or waste sites on banks that are just 4-5m wide, the Volcan is safer than a standard tractor. We only mow some sites once a year, so the grass can be long, and trading up to the Volcan 950 gives me almost twice the power of my previous tractor.”
The reverse drive configuration of the Volcan 950 means that the mower can be used out front, which as well as improving visibility,
gives a better finish as there are no ‘tramlines’ from the tractor running over the uncut sward.
David comments that it is quick and easy to rotate the seat to the conventional position for the tractor’s other main job – power harrowing to creat a seedbed for new grass seed.
“The compact size of the tractor means that it is easy to load up onto a trailer for jobs that are further away from my base in Leicestershire,” he adds, “and I have received very good service from Kilworth Machinery for both this tractor and the previous Valiant 650. I also like the air conditioned cab, as it can sometimes be hot work!”
Kioti all-rounder on course
A Kioti NX5510 is the latest tractor model to be added to the fleet at Heysham Golf Club in Lancashire.
The recent purchase from Wittingham’s Farm Services features a 55hp tier 4 diesel engine, HST linked pedal system that can help to reduce fuel consumption and spacious cabin.
Dave Hutchinson, Course Manager, explained that he chose the Kioti NX5510 as it was the most suitable tractor for handling the variety of tasks needed on such a challenging course. “I wanted a tractor to do trailer-work, loader work and to
power my Verti-drain and Shockwave,” he said.
With the course in close proximity to flash flood prone areas, Verti-draining is an essential operation. The NX5510 features an electronic HST control system to enable the tractor to maintain a set speed regardless of the load or surface when using the Verti-drain.
Dave praised the service offered Wittingham Tractors and Kioti importer Reco: “Wittingham Tractors adapted the tractor by altering the overall tyre width down to 1.8m, making the rear three point linkage floating and
reducing the bucket size down to the size I wanted.” Dave added.
The NX series offers an Auto PTO system which links the PTO to the three-point linkage allowing it to automatically engage when the linkage is lowered and shut off once raised.
It also features Kioti’s new Eco CRDI diesel engine, which uses common rail direct fuel injection with diesel particle filter and exhaust gas recirculation that allows the engine to exceed the Tier 4 emission standards by a further 10%.
TYM tractors on par at Wentworth
Wentworth Golf Club, in Surrey, has taken delivery of eight TYM tractors, marking part of a wider £1.2m deal with Lely UK.
Making up £165,000 of the overall £1.2m deal, the new TYM fleet – all of which has been bought with cabs –comprises two T353s with HST Transmissions; three compact T503 Manuals; two T603 Manuals, which offer great manoeuvrability; and one T903
Powershuttle, featuring large dual entry doors and front fenders. All have the Auto PTO function as standard.
Kenny MacKay, course manager and golf director at Wentworth, says he’s been very happy with the TYMs since they’ve been in action across the club’s three 18hole courses and vast grounds, noting that his teams have been equally impressed by the tractors’ performance and comfort.
High tech Deere at racing’s HQ
John
“The tractor replacement policy we now have in place across the group enables us to operate the latest models, with the benefit of local dealer service and support,” says JCR group purchasing director Ian Sidgwick. “Another advantage of the relationship is that John Deere is able to offer us a wide range of other groundscare machines, if required.
“The biggest change since the agreement was first signed has been the move to leasing the machinery using John Deere Financial, with
maintenance included. This has solved an issue we had with the allocation of tractors to individual courses with different capital expenditure budgets and requirements, where new equipment might not have had top priority –now replacements can be planned more effectively and budgeting is much simpler. The groundstaff are also delighted to be able to work with new machines that are even more reliable, more comfortable and equipped with the latest technology.”
Over the last two seasons the new leasing arrangements have enabled around 60 machines to be delivered by 10 different dealers to the full range of courses, as well as Jockey Club Estates.
“We trialled the TYMs with the heads of all four of our turf maintenance teams, three of which have a head greenkeeper, and one a head groundsman. They all said that they were happy with the choice, saying that not only were the machines comfy, but also easy to work,” he says. “In addition, our mechanic’s feedback was that they’re great from a servicing perspective, with parts easy to access, which is a real bonus,” Kenny adds.
Many of the tractors have been specified with a front linkage and pto for operating front mounted articulated rotary mowers, such as those made by Trimax and Lastec, as the bulk of the tractors’ workload is mowing the racetracks and other grass areas. In addition, this specification allows operators to utilise both front and rear mounted implements in one pass to save time and costs.
Jockey Club Estates at Newmarket comprises 2500 acres of grounds including around 70 miles of turf gallops and 19 miles of all-weather gallops, which are used on a daily basis by over 2500 horses in the care of more than 70 trainers. The tractors are
School’s ground staff vote for two New Holland Boomers
It was a vote by ground staff at St Albans School in Hertfordshire that helped seal the deal on a pair of New Holland compact tractors.
The two Boomer 50s, both fitted with air-conditioned cabs and one with a front loader, were part of a package agreed with the Ernest Doe dealership.
Getting the choice right was crucial for the independent school, which hosts a training centre for Saracens Rugby Club at its Woollam Playing Fields site.
Head groundsman Steve Ascott explained: “We had a shortlist of four tractor brands which we tried out. Then we asked the team to name their top one, two, three and four.”
The Boomer 50s take care of 73 acres of facilities for rugby, cricket, football, athletics, tennis, hockey and cross country, which are used by the school and local clubs seven days a week.
Top of the six-model range, the Boomer 50 features a fourcylinder engine, plus independent, electro-hydraulic three-speed
used for a variety of grounds and turf maintenance tasks including mowing, harrowing, rolling, aerating, general materials handling and trailer work around the yards and between sites.
The groundsteam is experimenting for the first time this spring with John Deere’s AMS GreenStar automatic guidance system, initially for use with a 6110RC tractor and Votex wide area rotary mower. This inhouse GPS system, well established in the agricultural market but far less widely used on amenity turf, is designed to cut overlaps and missed strips when cutting large grass areas, saving both time and fuel.
PTO. Sloped for forward visibility, the flip-up bonnet gives complete access to the engine, battery, radiator and air filters.
Mechanic Chris Copley added: “We’ve a TN75S for the last 13 years. It’s been really reliable and that helped us to decide. The Boomer 50 was recommended for our line of work and it’s easy to service.”
“The size of the tractor is perfect; it’s compact and the manoeuvrability is very good. We’re very happy with the
extendable linkage as well. We like the controls and they have good all-round vision in the cab which is important - you need to be able to see where the pupils are. We wanted the right equipment to do the right job, and Ernest Doe has got a really good back-up package so they’ll be out to us in 24 hours, if necessary.”
The Boomer 50s have been put to work spraying, scarifying, leaf clearing and pulling trailers, among a host of other tasks. One has been fitted with Trelleborg turf tyres to minimise compaction.
The 6110RC is one of three new John Deere 6RC Series 110hp tractors supplied to Jockey Club Estates at the beginning of this year by local dealer Ben Burgess Newmarket, joining a fleet of four new 6090RC tractors supplied in spring 2014.
These are used by two teams of grounds maintenance staff at the Newmarket Training Grounds’ Bury Side and Racecourse Side sites on either side of the town, under the supervision of training grounds manager Nick Patton.
“It has been very interesting trialling the Autotrac system with the new Votex mower, which is
made up of a front mounted deck and two rear decks which can be adjusted for a wide or narrow swath,” says Nick.
“It offers a high output while overcoming the issue of tractor wheels running over uncut grass ahead of traditional rear mount mowers.
“Autotrac also has a significant impact on output by reducing overlaps – the operator reckons that a cut that previously took ten days to complete can be covered in four days with this combination. The system should also be useful for harrowing and rolling, but mowing is 80 per cent of our workload.”
Latest Rapid tractors for Land Engineering
A new range topping model has been announced from Rapid Tractors designated the Orbito.
This new generation 2 wheel tractor has an electronic control system with all functions controlled from two pods, one on each handlebar.
As with all Rapid machines, it is hydrostatic drive and this time, with a 23hp engine. It features a zero turn sliding axle for perfect weight distribution on slopes which is adjustable on the move, two types of steering, either lever or through handlebar pressure, again selectable on the move. The tractor had reversing handlebars and so totally a two direction machine.
The first to run these new machines is the Scottish landscaping and grounds maintenance company, Land Engineering. They have just
purchased 7 units complete with 130cm Rapid mulching flail mowers to use on their Scottish Water contract.
The Rapid was chosen for its advanced features which make the machine safe when working on slopes, its power output to run the
flail mowers and the finish that the Rapid SM flail produces.

Long history of innovation from Grillo
Grillo have been major manufacturer of two-wheel tractors since 1955.
The range is comprehensive utilising Honda,Kohler or Briggs engines and are sold only via authorised UK dealers.
Its 2 latest machines are the G108 & G110 which have been built specifically for hard professional use. Powered by either the 9 or 12hp Honda GX series engine both models are equipped with steering brakes, diff lock, full engine protection, 3 fwd 3 reverse gears, a huge 68cm tiller head and the new IRS (instant reverse system) which, at the flick of a lever, disengages the tiller head, lowers the rpm and puts the machine into reverse mode.
As with all Grillo walking tractors a large range of implements are readily available such as stone buriers, flails, rotary mowers, powered brushes, sickle bar mowers or snow blowers to name a few.
At the smaller end of the Grillo walking tractor range is the G52 powered by either a 5hp Kohler or 5hp Honda engine and again implements such as a 50cm tiller; rotary mower, powered brush and snowblade are readily available.
In the mid range Grillo offer the G55 with a 5hp Honda GX series engine, this model is capable of powering a 58cm tiller head, ploughs, furrowers, snow blowers, or even a tow behind trailer.
For many years the G85 has been the top selling Grillo machine powered by either the Honda GX290 or Subaru EX27 engine with diff lock depending on the model, again a wealth of implements are available to create a truly versatile machine.
All internal components are produced by Grillo themselves at their modern manufacturing facility in Italy.
Hockey players benefit from innovation
Hockey players can now enjoy the latest innovation in the game’s sport-specific playing surfaces, with a new advancement in artificial turf technology.
TX HD, the newest creation from synthetic yarn manufacturer, Bonar Yarns, is the next generation of ‘Knit de Knit’ (KdK) hockey fibre, incorporating specially curled yarns with a waxy surface that improve performance in both wet and dry conditions.
The yarn not only meets global standards, having achieved the
FIH’s highest requirement, FIH Global Edition 2014, but it creates a consistent, uniform playing surface that lasts far longer than previous versions of KdK hockey products.
Key to TX HD is the increased durability it offers, ensuring that high wear areas can resist the additional strain, without detriment to the playing performance.
Heveatech decking is naturally engineered
If you are looking to source ecofriendly decking products, Round Wood of Mayfield has recently introduced a new and innovative board to the UK market.
Heveatech decking is cut from responsibly harvested ‘Hevea Brasiliensis,’ or Rubber Trees, at the end of their useful life, so offers outstanding environmental credentials, including FSC Certification.
The manner in which it is engineered also makes Heveatech extremely stable. Small layers of the cut timber are bonded together under extreme compression and finished with a matching veneer, resulting in a board that is far more resistant to contraction and expansion than other timbers.
Other hardwoods offered by Round Wood of Mayfield include Ipe, Balau and Oak, all selected for their outstanding durability and high end appearance. They only softwoods in their range, including Siberian Larch and
Radiata Pine, only make the grade because they boast high levels of natural oils, which results in uncharacteristic
