Concern as Government scraps Green Infrastructure Guidance
A group of organisations including the Landscape Institute, the Town and Country Planning Association, Groundwork UK and The Land Trust have written to the Government expressing their concern for the disappearance of Green Infrastructure guidance within National Planning Practice Guidance (NPPG).
Until recently the green infrastructure guidance was found as a link on the Natural England website. However, in a shift to the central .gov website the guidance has been archived and is no longer accessible.
Noel Farrer, President of the Landscape Institute, said: “Without proper guidance green
infrastructure will effectively become ‘downgraded’ throughout the planning system. This is fundamentally at odds with the Government’s ambition, set out in its Natural Environment White Paper, ‘to be the first generation to leave the natural environment in a better state than it inherited’.
“We want Government to provide us with assurances that this situation with be resolved so that the real potential of green infrastructure can be realised.”
Groundwork Chief Executive, Graham Duxbury, said: “We know that good green space in and around towns and cities helps keep people physically and mentally well, prepares us for
climate change and binds communities together.
“We also know that public spending reductions are going to make it harder to maintain and improve our parks and open spaces. Whether designing major new settlements or helping communities improve their neighbourhoods, understanding how to value nature and maximise the benefits of green space is hugely important.
“Planning guidance ensures people have access to the right information but also that investment decisions are fully informed.”

Welcome...
It is sometimes easy to ignore or disregard the impact politicians, both locally and nationally, have on our industry.
As I stated last month, however, we are now in the countdown to this year’s General Election and decisions made at the ballot box will undoubtedly have a direct impact on us all – from basic economic and social policies, through to funding arrangements and spending priorities for local authorities.
There is a growing concern regarding our disappearing green spaces and urban parks – we will cover this issue in more detail in next month’s magazine – with the Heritage Lottery Fund releasing a sobering report at the end of 2014 and support for the likes of the Love Park campaign growing month after month.
We highlight another area of concern this month, with the Landscape Institute highlighting the negative impact of the Government’s failure to update green infrastructure guidance. This will have a direct impact on our industry in the short-term, but is also likely to have significant long-term implications.
As the Institute points out, without proper, updated guidance green infrastructure will, in effect, be downgraded throughout the planning system. It also undermines the ability of all users of the national planning guidelines to find up to date, relevant information on the key concepts behind green infrastructure. A lack of up to date guidance will hamper efforts to deliver effective, multifunctional green infrastructure on the ground.
Good green space in and around towns and cities helps keep people physically and mentally well, prepares us for climate change and binds communities together. Our industry needs to support the safeguarding of existing spaces and the creation of new green areas and parks. Elsewhere this month, Jane Carley has put together a comprehensive report on the ever-popular ride-on mower market. We also put the spotlight on aerators, artificial turf and weed and pest control.
There is also the usual round-up of product news, case studies and opinions from the natural and urban environment, from grass seeds to street furniture.

Paul Hervey-Brookes creates estate garden for Perennial
Gardening World Cup Best in Show winner and RHS Gold Medal winning garden designer, Paul Hervey-Brookes, has received approval from the Royal Horticultural Society this week for his large scale Perennial Legacy Garden at the RHS Flower Show Tatton Park in July 2015.
Designed to reflect elements of a large English country estate, the Perennial Legacy Garden features long herbaceous borders, a pavilion for relaxing and enjoying the garden and a separate walled working garden with gardener’s bothy and nursery beds.
The design demonstrates the important relationship that estate gardens have with their gardeners – those who work tirelessly to
plant, train and maintain them –and the charity’s foundations, which lie firmly in the great country gardens and estates of Great Britain. It also serves to highlight the unique role Perennial continues to play in helping all horticulturists in times of need.
The RHS has called the design “strong and appealing” and Perennial agrees. Anita Bates, director of marketing & development at Perennial, says: “This garden reflects that tradition of support; Paul has taken our brief and created for Perennial a celebration of tradition and a garden that is as inspirational today as it would have been in the 19th Century.”

Double success for Phil Day Sports and Worcester
It was a ‘double’ for Worcester and a ‘double’ for Phil Day Sports at the Institute of Groundsmanship (IOG) annual Industry Awards held at the end of last year.
The Professional Cricket Grounds Team of the Year went to Worcestershire County Cricket Club and the Professional Rugby Union Grounds Team of the Year to Worcester Warriors – both clients of Phil Day Sports.
Phil Day Sports (PDS) has firmly established itself as a leading Sports Turf contractor since its creation in 1999. Specialising in the sports amenity sector, the company works with the majority of sports surfaces from a village cricket square to premiership football and county cricket grounds.
Head groundsman at Worcestershire CCC, Tim Packwood, has been at the club
for 25 years and has worked with PDS for many years. “They get involved with major maintenance tasks, as well as other general jobs that need doing. Also, noone at the club has a tractor mounted spraying certificate so Phil and his team sort that out for us too.”
Worcestershire CCC is on a flood plain and the ground was underwater from Christmas Eve
2013 until almost the end of February 2014. Once it receded they were only left with 30% grass coverage on the square. The first Championship match was played on the ground on 13 April with the surface still not at its best, but this was a phenomenal effort by Tim and the team to be able to play this game at New Road.
At Worcester Warriors Rugby Club, head groundsman Martin
Knight says he likes the fact that PDS just ‘come in on time and get on with the job’.
Two years ago they installed a new full drainage system on the main stadium pitch. Martin and his team are responsible for 55 acres in total, which equates to 20 pitches and various other grass areas.
Millfield School boost recycling with Bio Chopper
Set in over 300 acres of playing fields and grounds, with its own Equestrian Centre and stabling for 30 ponies, Millfield School had a recycling problem with all the Green waste from pruning’s, plants, grass cuttings, hedge trimmings and horse manure.
Back in 2005 Millfield School asked Harry West to demonstrate a Seko Bio Chopper, and after looking at the results of the machine decided to purchase a Seko 500/150 machine, after 10 years of service and many tons of composting, time came to update the machine.
David Warner, grounds and gardens manager, said: ‘’The
Seko Sam 500/150 Bio-Chopper has become an integral part of the green waste management plan at Millfield, we process around 1600m³ of material annually which we are then able to use as mulch for our shrub beds.
“There was no hesitation in deciding to replace this piece of equipment as reliability and production have shown that it is very good at what it does, and would advise anyone having to compost green waste that they investigate the Seko as part of their process.”

Dennis the only choice at Turf Moor
Burnley FC reached the highest tier in English football at the start of this season after being promoted to the Barclay’s Premier League.
Now rubbing shoulders with some of the finest teams in the country, the club has turned to Dennis to help keep the pitch in pristine condition.
Head groundsman at Turf Moor, Paul Bradshaw, maintains the pitch with the help of two Dennis G860 professional mowers complete with a range of interchangeable cassettes which have recently been purchased from his local dealer GGM Groundscare.
The Dennis G860 has 11 quick changeover cassette options giving ultimate flexibility and a single power unit for many dayto-day maintenance tasks. It also features a large diameter front roller with an adjustable scraper which has been designed for a precise height of cut control, giving an excellent finish on every occasion.
Paul is no stranger to this machine. Prior to his role at Burnley, Paul plied his trade at Liverpool FC. It was there where he had his first encounter with the G860.
“The best feature on the mower is its interchangeable cassettes – it just makes everything so easy,” he said. “We wanted a mower that wasn’t just a mower
and it’s great to have a machine that’s so versatile. The G860’s were at the top of my wish list and I wasn’t even considering anything else. The team are
already familiar with them and it was just the natural choice.”

“A20 Premier Ryesport has always fielded a mixture of five top quality perennial ryegrasses,” explains Richard Brown, Amenity Sales Manager for Germinal. “Following on from recent successes – A20 was used on the pitch at Southampton FC when they were joint winners of the IOG’s Premier League pitch of the year in 2014, and at Swindon Town FC in 2013 when the club won the League One
“All three of the new cultivars have been selected for their consistent fineness of leaf and their ability to produce a sward that stripes really well, and for their uniformity of high shoot density which aids sward recovery,” Richard continues. “But it is the inclusion of Promotor which is really exciting,” he explains.

Otterbine urges proactive approach to water quality issues
While warmer weather may seem far-off, water management specialist Otterbine is advising groundskeepers to be pre-emptive when it comes to the challenges summer can throw at water hazards.
Water quality is a critical factor in successful park management all year round, but with the arrival of
summer comes warmer water, plentiful sunlight and excess nutrients; a combination that, without a proper water management system in place, can leave lakes and ponds with algae, aquatic weeds and odours.
But with Britain still in the midst of winter, Roger Lupton,
Otterbine sales representative at distributor Lely UK, explains why it’s vital to implement preventative measures now and not later.
“Oxygen depletion or stress situations occur for different reasons, but many lake management issues are related to
both the light and heat generated by the summer sun,” says Roger.
“Although we’re a way off summer, now is the perfect time to be assessing potential challenges. Waiting until symptoms of poor water quality appear before implementing good water management could be detrimental to both the environment and groundskeepers’ budgets,” he warns.
Low oxygen levels, combined with minimal circulation, prematurely ages water and throws the natural ecosystem out of balance. Only then do symptoms of poor water quality begin to appear, which as well as algae, weeds and odours, include sludge build up and dead fish. These symptoms not only impact on the park’s reputation, but the cost of fixative programmes far outweighs preventative measures.
Roger says: “It’s vital that lake managers are fully aware of the financial implications of not acting until it’s too late – once a lake has lost its ecological balance and goes into crisis, the costs of restoring the lake increase dramatically. As well as often being more expensive to implement, reactive solutions tend to be less friendly to the environment too.”
Roger advises how to avoid an ecological imbalance, suggesting groundskeepers create an environmentally friendly programme that is preventative in nature.
“The most natural water quality management solution is to introduce aeration in to a pond or lake to eliminate stagnant water. That’s where Otterbine’s aeration systems can help,” he says.
“By increasing oxygen levels and circulating oxygen rich water throughout a lake, water quality can remain high, inhibiting algae, aquatic weeds and foul odours.”

Take control. Get connected.
Increased coordination, productivity and safety? All essential characteristics required for a successful landscaping business, but sometimes attaining those high standards can be difficult. Switching to Husqvarna Fleet Services; where the landscaping industry has become connected, give you the capabilities to achieve those goals. Using the latest Cloud-based technology, you can galvanize your fleet.
2.Interactive Maintenance System
Helps keep track of all your machines and alerts both the Fleet Manager and the nearest Husqvarna dealer before maintenance is due. A dedicated maintenance program will be put in place for each individual machine, leading to improved up-time and prolonged machine lifespan.
they need to book time for a service. Husqvarna Fleet Services gives you a ‘heads-up’ so you can not only organise a service, but also plan your maintenance regime to efficiently accommodate any off-road time.
The technology behind it, is relatively simple. A small wireless sensor that collects data, is fitted on each of your outdoor machines. Statistics such as engine run-time, operator ID’s, rpm distribution, temperature etc. are measured. You can obtain information regarding your teams’ exposure to vibrations, needs for machine servicing and ways that your operations can be optimised to suit your landscaping business.
Husqvarna Fleet Services’ package consists of; a Wireless Sensor for each machine, an optional Operator Card (OpTag) and a Base Station to transmit the data to the cloud. All the data collected is automatically uploaded onto the Cloud which can then be accessed online or via a mobile app.
Data on each machines usage and operator status is sorted into four main categories that are easy accessible:
1.Workday Log
Displays data that calculates how productive your landscaping operations are. Visual information on how often and effectively your fleet machines are used is displayed here. This data is particularly useful when expansion of your machine range is being considered.
3.Machine Handling Allows managers and operators to understand whether the individual products in the fleet are being optimally used. Productivity can be increased using this information, along with a reduction in fuel consumption.
4.Vibration Reports
Focuses on machine operators and gives an indication of the vibration levels that users have been exposed to; all referenced against applicable EU standards. Decision can be made regarding worker safety and how to improve productivity within safe vibration boundaries.
A library consisting of operator manuals, workshop manuals, parts lists, machine handling films and other tutorials is another superb feature, tailored to improve your landscaping teams’ product knowledge and usage.
Here’s a quick example to illustrate how the Cloud works; imagine the wireless sensor is mounted to a Husqvarna Front Mower. When the Mower is in need of a service in, for example, 25 hours usage time, a message will be sent to you and your preferred Husqvarna dealer. This gives them a warning in advance if spare parts need to be ordered or
With Husqvarna Fleet Services, the need to ‘estimate’ how well your fleet is performing is minimised. As the margins within the industry become even more refined, a more sophisticated way of measuring your fleet’s operations is needed. “Cloudbased Machine-to-Machine (M2M) solutions have made it possible for Husqvarna to develop a system that allows modern landscaping businesses to go from estimates to facts” states Håkan Wahlgren; Project Manager at Husqvarna Group.
Husqvarna Fleet Services can revolutionise operations in the professional sector. Chris Beamer, Regional Manager for ISS Facility Services Landscaping, has given us his personal opinions; “Prior to the system, we didn’t have a tangible
measurement in terms of machinery use per day.” ISS Facility Services Landscaping, in conjunction with Husqvarna UK, then implemented Fleet Services into their machines; “Machinery that may have been underutilised or where product lifespan can be extended could be identified.” “It has led to a substantial saving in management time, as Fleet Services removes the need for a paper system.”
The city of Antwerp attributed Husqvarna Fleet Services as a major factor in their decision to sign a four-year deal with Husqvarna as their exclusive supplier of outdoor power equipment. Representatives cited an overreaching view of their fleet that offered greater control and insight into product utilisation, as specific reasons for their decision.
Making the switch to a paperless, cloud-based system has never been as simple and accessible. Husqvarna Fleet Services will change your business forever and ensure your fleet is running smoothly throughout the year.

The front seed drop ensures there is follow-up soil coverage to encourage better seed germination and more seed rows, placed close together, produce thicker turf faster. There’s a 3.8cm/1½” spacing between the 26 heattreated multipurpose blades to provide a carpet-like coverage, even on the bumpiest of terrain.
The blades are designed with a cutting edge on both ends, which doubles blade life. There is a five position, single action height adjustment and the durable, easily removable covered seed box is mounted high to eliminate clogging.
For transportation and storage the TS20 overseeder handles fold easily and when you’re done seeding remove the seedbox and the machine converts in minutes
to a rake or a vertical cutter, so you effectively have three machines in one. If you have large areas to cover there is a self–propelled model with hydrostatic drive to speed you over the area and one handle controls both directions, forward and reverse. A commercial 270cc engine provides plenty of power to get the job done, while the weight is evenly distributed to reduce soil compaction.
Schiller Grounds Care Enquiry 37Stratford racecourse shapes up well
Head Groundsman at Stratford Racecourse in Warwickshire, Eric Harris, prepares the course for an intense racing schedule that starts early in March and finishes at the end of October.
During the year, the racecourse is spiked four times, vertidrained twice and over-seeded once.
At the end of last season, Eric started using Premium Pitch for the first time, for over-seeding and also as part of a divot mix applied when treading the track back in after racing.
Recently introduced by Everris, Premium Pitch is a new blend of perennial ryegrasses that gives both dense cover and the hard-wearing performance demanded by top stadia, sports fields and racecourses.
The blend of perennial ryegrass cultivars result in a very deeprooting grass which creates a cushion-like surface for horses to race over. It establishes and recovers from wear quickly, has excellent tolerance to common turf diseases and offers outstanding visual appeal, making it especially ideal for areas that experience a lot of wear and tear.
Premium Pitch was used for both landing and take-off areas at the Stratford course. As these were newly constructed, they were oversown at the end of September. Within four weeks the sward showed strong rooting, was dense and a good colour.

Spread the word on spraying efficiency
Spraying is a year-round maintenance duty, whether you're applying liquid fertilisers to spur grass plant growth or fungicides to control disease outbreaks.
Its purpose may vary but the functionality of the exercise cannot if turfcare professionals are to treat turf with optimum efficiency.
That's why Vitax Amenity's pedestrian sprayers have been developed with costeffectiveness in mind. The Evensprey 300 and 250 models, conceived and fabricated at the company's Coalville, Leicestershire, factory, are rechargeable battery operated to help ensure more accurate and even application.
Their spray booms feature flatfan nozzle technology - the fan delivers a tapered distribution, which makes it suitable for overlapping along the boom. The 1,600mm wide boom on the fourwheel EvenSprey 300 covers a 1.35m single pass and is double independent for added flexibility, conveniently folding away for transportation.
With 30l capacity tank and pressure regulator allowing varying output with the same nozzles, the EvenSprey 300 also comes with a hand lance to allow more flexibility when needed.

Aitkens Holster XL proves deadly to weeds
Rob Clare, Course Manager of Brough Golf Club, East Riding Yorkshire is delighted with the results of his weed control programme.
After applying the selective systemic herbicide Holster XL on his greens, hardy weeds such as Daisy, Slender Speedwell, Dandelion, Creeping Buttercup and Clover have all but disappeared.
Like all turf professionals, Rob Clare Head Greenkeeper is no stranger to the tricky question of tackling weeds. Over the years he has tried many products with varying degrees of success. He is mindful that chemical control measures can often be tough on turf, and slow in killing weeds.
Holster is gentle on grass. This is an important factor to the golf and sports industry which has to
maintain the aesthetics of the greens as well as minimising surface disturbance. Holster XL can be safely applied to new grass after only two months growth. Once sprayed it is absorbed through the leaf of the plant and rapidly translocates through the stem and ultimately to the roots, killing the weed.

Weedingtech provides efficient solution across all surfaces
Quadron Services, an ISO 9001 accredited horticultural and grounds maintenance company with an herbicide reduction contract has found Weedingtech a successful and efficient solution to their work sites in the London
Borough of Southwark, Southwark Park, Burgess Park, Peckham Park, Dulwich Park and Russia Dock Woodland.
With a specific focus on hard surfaces (cobblestones,
limestone, tarmac) and soft surfaces (mulched shrub beds and tree pits), Quadron found the application of Foamstream particularly helpful in perennial and annual flower beds, a previously problematic area.
Quadron does not perform any weed spraying and all pests are removed by mechanical means like hoeing and hand digging, thus the use of Foamstream has reduced not only the amount of labour required, but also potential equipment damage.
Pleased with Foamstream’s efficacy, Quadron has also observed a reduction in their
petrol and two stoke oil usage – a definitive decrease in their overall carbon footprint.
Terry Burns, Senior Contract Manager at Quadron Services, says: “We have been using Foamstream for around nine months and it has been excellent at treating all of our hard surface areas, especially on moss and near waterways.
“Our previous methods were costly and labour intensive, leaving us at risk to potential insurance claims from flying debris.”
Spray time with Wessex
Once the weeds start appearing you want to deal with them quickly and efficiently and an ATV mounted sprayer is the choice method for many landscapers, groundsmen and farmers. Accuracy is important, especially where spraying is adjacent to conservation areas for example, and durability in your sprayer is paramount. One of the most popular choices in mounted sprayers are the Wessex SS Sprayers with their heavy-duty 55 litre rotomoulded tanks and a variety of pump options to suit the width of boom. The design is clever, with standard and offset nozzles and anti-drop valves giving an even spray of chemicals from 1.5m to 5m and you can choose from five different booms and three pump sizes. One particularly important feature is that Wessex SS Sprayer booms are kept within the
width of the ATV, so there is no snagging on posts, trees or other objects, and the boom height is adjustable. An in-line suction filter and gauze on the pipe are designed to prevent pump contamination. All models come with a hand lance and hose as standard and there’s a handy lance clip to hold the lance securely when it’s not in use. A brass quickrelease fitting lets you easily change from boom to lance spraying. The unit itself has built-in lifting handles so it’s easily mounted onto the ATV where it is held in place with the straps kept in position in moulded strap guides. The Whale pump used in the sprayers is said to be twenty percent more efficient on the draw from the battery than other types of pump.
Real progress enjoyed by the sector
Amenity Forum chairman John Moverley reports real progress in the sector in its demonstration of best practice and, as a consequence, through its own voluntary actions, driving up standards.
The sector is facing continuing challenges in particular related to implementation of the Sustainable Use and Water Framework Directives. If it is to stay in control and maintain its position in terms of weed, pest and disease control, it is important that all get behind the
Forum as the voluntary initiative for the sector.
However, John maintains there still more to do and summarised within three key points as follows: improved engagement; a better understanding of what is required of them, including the need to engage in CPD & understand recent changes in sprayer requirements; and a genuinely integrated approach.

Perfect finish with new jointing compound
Expanding its popular Pavetuf range to offer a complete paving solution, Natural Paving Products (UK) Ltd has launched a new jointing compound that requires no mixing and can even be used in wet weather conditions.
Pavetuf Jointing Compound is particularly effective because it can be applied as soon as the paving has been laid due to its wet weather capability. Once cured, the compound is both weed resistant and jet wash
resistant, offering outstanding durability.
The application is also very simple as no mixing is required: the compound can be poured directly over the pre-soaked paving and then worked in to the joints using a stiff brush. Once applied, paving can be ready to walk on in as little as 18 to 24 hours.

McConnel Enquiry 68Advanced Roundup ProVantage boosts performance
Roundup ProVantage is a new glyphosate herbicide from market leader Monsanto, formulated to set new and improved standards in weed control.
Building on Monsanto’s expertise in herbicide developments - the company first introduced the tried and tested Roundup in 1974 - Roundup ProVantage is more concentrated at 480g glyphosate per litre.
The optimised blend of surfactants as well as the high loading makes
Roundup ProVantage Monsanto’s most advanced amenity glyphosate on the market.
This offers significant benefits for specifiers and operators alike. With more active ingredient in each pack, less packaging is needed for the same reliable weed control, creating less packaging waste.
Improved environmental stewardship is an important consideration for local authorities and contractors, and reducing waste can make a major contribution.
Practical advantages include easier transport and handling of products, offering extra convenience when groundsmen may have a large amount of equipment to take to the worksite.
Transport is also an expensive commodity, so any savings can help cut costs, while for large contracting operations reduced need for space in the chemical store is a further benefit.
Roundup ProVantage offers superior performance too – with
improved rainfastness and speed of uptake. Rainfast in one hour for annuals and four hours for perennials, this new product reduces the risk of run off and ensures the maximum amount of glyphosate reaches the roots for the optimum effectiveness.
Roundup ProVantage can be used with confidence in public spaces as it has been classified as nonhazardous by COSHH and is approved for use in aquatic areas.

The SISIS Osca is a tractor mounted powered oscillating brush with a 1.9 meter working width and is equally effective when used on artificial turf with sand or rubber infill.
A contributory factor to the reduction of compaction is that the Osca’s working width will use fewer passes than other more conventional drag brushes to complete a pitch.

Powdered rubber crumb targeted by Terra Clean 160
Wiedenmann’s Terra Clean 160 is uniquely placed - it is a sweeper, cleaner and collector embracing revolutionary technology used in military conditions.
It has a cyclone filter system which draws and removes dust cleverly inspired by the engineering solutions pioneered by trucks operating in sandy deserts.
Moreover this unique and ecofriendly addition to Wiedenmann’s artificial maintenance fleet combines both a sieved separation system with a dust cyclone extraction system to filter and remove miniscule deposits.
Needing just a 18hp tractor, the Terra Clean 160’s exceptional
deep cleaning capability targets powdered rubber crumb. These tiny, fine particles can cause havoc to a pitch because they seal the playing surface and compact the yarn. Once this happens ball roll and play-abilty is compromised so regular deep cleaning is vital.
As a sweeper/collector the Terra Clean 160 lifts litter and debris from the surface at the same time as returning infill back to the playing surface.
A counter-rotating brush on the floor sweeps debris, dust and rubber infill, aided by a blower, up into the machine. The waste travels into a two-stage sieve with the dusty air confined to a storage chamber. A progressive sieving system aids
better separation of the returnable infill from the debris. Rubber crumb granules fall back to the ground while other waste, such as litter and leaves, is collected in two 50 litre baskets. Appealing to those caring for surfaces which meet the

Replay Maintenance praised by Tonbridge School
Replay Maintenance, market leaders in providing artificial surface maintenance solutions, has been praised for its “thoroughness” after solving a drainage problem on a waterbased artificial turf hockey pitch at Tonbridge School in Kent.
Tonbridge is an England Hockey accredited Junior Regional Performance Centre and the Kent County Hockey Association use the school's training facilities. Most recently, the full England Men’s team also trained at the school.
The eight year old hockey pitch was starting to accumulate a build-up of silt and algae in the carpet pile, which was in turn, impeding the drainage. Puddles were appearing with holding water sitting on the surface, the pitch was becoming unplayable.
Replay Maintenance sent its experienced team in to
investigate and after a professional assessment it was decided that its unique Aquatrax process should be used.
Aquatrax is a revolutionary process which applies pressure water jets to dislodge any dirt and debris. With a powerful vacuum extraction system, the machine then removes the dirty water into a tank on the machine so that contaminants are not returned to the playing surface.
“The Aquatrax process has removed the algae and all the fine silts in the carpet pile so now during the wet weather that we are experiencing at the moment, the carpet is not holding any water on the surface. The drainage has been vastly improved,” said George Alexander, director of grounds and gardens at Tonbridge School.

STMA award for the Air2G2
The Air Inject Air2G2 from Campey Turf Care Systems has won the Most Innovative Product Award at the American Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA) conference and exhibition in Denver, USA, last month.
The Innovative Awards Program recognises those commercial company members that have developed a product, service, equipment or technology that substantially enhances the effectiveness of the sports turf manager. The innovation could also make playing surfaces safer and more playable for athletes.
The Air2G2 meets all these criteria and more. Its innovative design uses pressure to penetrate deep into the soil by injecting air
up to a depth of 12 inches (depending on tine fitted). This action fractures the ground horizontally forcing the air upward to decompact the soil around the root zone.
Essentially, the action of forcing air through the soil structure creates a network of fissures. This in turn produces the conditions for healthy roots to develop and grow deep while encouraging excellent microbial activity and increasing the presence of bacteria in the soil.
The Air2G2 literally breathes new life into the soil. And there is no disruption to the playing surface whatsoever.

GKB Sand-Filler tackles drainage and aeration
A walk in the park with Terrain Aeration
The good health and longevity of the trees is considered an utmost priority so it was of concern when the Royal Parks arboriculturalists detected nutrient shortages in the soil.
Using new technology to measure the light transmitted through the leaves on the trees gave them a reading of the chlorophyll levels and their findings revealed magnesium deficiency, coupled with low overall soil fertility.
injections of mycorhizzae and nutrients and subsequent mulch application will benefit our trees in the long term, extending their viable lifespan, and ensuring their continued contribution to the amenity of the park and the environment.”
Redexim Verti-Core helps contractor with new contracts
Robust construction, combined with simple adjustments, make the Redexim Verti-Core from Charterhouse Turf Machinery reliable and easy to use.
It is a highly productive and low maintenance turf aerator with fewer moving parts to ensure simple service and less maintenance. The tines penetrate the soil perfectly vertical allowing the machine to operate at high speeds.
It’s a machine that Steve Tingley, owner of Championship Sports Surfaces, knows a lot about. The company specialises in the design, construction and
maintenance of natural grass sports surfaces and high profile quality turf areas.
The Redexim Verti-Core is one of the fastest aerators on the market, with working speeds up to 3.5 mph to save time and money. Special core deflectors keep the cores away from the machine and the support arms enable the VertiCore to work in extremely tough conditions. A wide variety of tines are available.
The GKB Sandfiller is designed to tackle the problem of surface drainage and aeration on golf courses, especially on greens.
Available exclusively in the UK from The Grass Group, this machine aerates the topsoil and fills with sand to provide ideal conditions for excellent root growth.
The GKB Sandfiller features a slitting rotor offering slitting widths from 2mm to 4mm which can be adjusted to a depth of 0 to 4cm. The material removed from the top layer is immediately collected in a sideways-tipping container leaving a clean finish.
Sand is then deployed to a fixed width of 4cm and various trench widths up to 4mm - the flow of which is easily controlled hydraulically by means of an
adjustable valve. The whole unit is situated between pivoted conveyor rollers, enabling an even distribution of the machines’ weight.
The Sandfiller offers true multifunctionality, performing both activities in one pass and all requiring just two-person operation resulting in labour, cost and time savings.
The network it creates ensures faster drainage and greater green longevity through economic and intensive aeration of the top layer. With a working width of 1.2M, the Sandfiller offers a costeffective alternative to complete surface renovation. In addition the Sandfiller is designed to be environmentally-friendly creating only a small CO2 footprint.

The Royal Parks arboriculturalists called in Terrain Aeration to treat the areas and provide a long-term solution using their Terralift machines.
“Terrain Aeration have undertaken a programme of decompaction of the soil beneath some of our most stressed trees in Green Park, Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens over the last three years.” says arboricultural officer, Matt Steinmann.
“We know that the improvement of the soil through decompaction,
A tree feed mix containing slow release general nutrients and magnesium was injected, using the Terralift’s ability to inject granular material via its seaweed carrier, forcing it upwards into the root zone of the trees. This also avoids losing the nutrients to the grass which would occur with surface treatment.
Two Terralift machines were used to carry out the process. The Airforce, Terrain Aeration’s largest ride-on, treated the avenue of trees with three lines of injection holes. The Tracker, a small and nimble machine, was then used to treat lines in between the trees in each avenue.

New combo machines are key to combatting compaction
Twose’s innovative new all-inone subsoiler and aerator machines have been unveiled.
Designed to boost soil quality and fight compaction, the new SSA range combines the two operations in a single-passheaving, aerating and rolling the soil before slitting it to aid water percolation and promote capillary action.
Available in a choice of 2.5m and 3.0m working widths, the new machines potentially halve the time required to treat pasture and deliver major savings in labour and fuel costs.
Twose director of sales and marketing Tim Coleridge said the SSA machines would offer a major labour and cost saving advantage for contractors and prove a significant weapon in easing compaction and enhancing growth.
“The double action of subsoiling and aeration will enhance the condition of grass roots and improve the ingression of water and air, promoting strong earlier growth of grass,” he added.
“Combining the two roles into a single-pass operation will save contractors time and money and
help them increase efficiency and quality.”
The SSA machines are compatible with tractors of 80 hp
and above (two leg model), 120hp and above for a three-leg configuration.

The New ECHO SRM-420TES is the professional’s choice
and built exclusively
With a 1:2.07 gear reduction ratio, the SRM-420TES’s high torque gearbox spins the cutting head one-and-a-quarter turns per
engine cycle and delivers 50% more torque than its predecessor. This extra torque means that, when fitted with heavier line, the brushcutter can make short work of even dense bramble or brush without losing head speed.
The cutting head on the 420TES has been upgraded too. Now with an extra 7.6cm of cutting radius, operators can cut wider swathes, reducing the number of passes required to complete the job at
hand. Coupled with ECHO’s ‘Tap & Go’ quick line release system, the SRM-420TES can quickly work through larger areas with few stops to load new line.
The 420TES benefits from a new engine design. Now stage 2 emission compliant, the 41.5cc engine boasts a power output of 1.78kW, over 10% more than its predecessor. Engine performance has been further enhanced thanks to a new air filter design. Positioned at the rear of the machine, away from flying dirt and debris, filtration has been greatly improved, allowing for smooth and efficient engine performance. Access to the filter is tool-free and the cover can be removed and fitted by hand, even when the operator is wearing work gloves.
Chappelow extends turf care capability
Turf has further extended its capability to deliver construction, drainage and maintenance services across sport, leisure and amenity by expanding its fleet of highperformance tractors.
Two John Deere 6125R models are the latest additions to the lineup, which spans compact units to some of the most powerful the
manufacturer produces. The acquisitions follow burgeoning demand for increasingly important improvements to sports pitches and golf courses, which help grounds and greens teams raise performance standards and minimise closures and fixture cancellations due to bad weather.
A newly designed quick hook-up and release harness is features on this U handle brushcutter. This allows the operator to easily detach themselves from the machine quickly should the need arise.
ECHO only build equipment to one standard – professional. The SRM-420TES is no exception. It has been tested in the same punishing conditions that it will be used in every day. So confident are ECHO of its durability, the 420TES comes with a two year warranty in professional use. The ECHO SRM-420TES high torque brushcutter is £649.17 (ex-VAT). New John Deere lawn tractors for 2015
John Deere is adding three new models to its extensive range of lawn tractors for 2015.
These include an industry leading innovation at the top of the range, designed for faster and more economical mowing.
The X590 Multi-Terrain lawn tractor combines higher levels of power, performance and comfort, and is particularly suitable for larger areas of grass (over 8000m2) or more challenging terrain. Twin Touch foot controls, power steering, a hydraulically operated mower deck and an easy
ATT moves into the Sports Ground sector
To cater for the needs of the Groundsman ATT has developed a 30” version of its popular INFiNiSystem. This new model follows on the heels of last year’s launch of a 26” version, up from the 22” launch model.
Built to the same exacting standards as you would expect from any ATT product, the new 30” INFiNiSystem is more than simply an elongated version of the 22” and 26” units. The 30” boasts the same unique floating head mechanism that is independent of the traction drive, ensuring ground pressure is spread between three rollers, as opposed to two as seen
on fixed head units. This is hugely beneficial as it helps to regulate weight transfer and minimise plant stress during routine cutting operations.
The new 30” INFiNiSystem, pictured with ATT managing director John Coleman, can be driven either fully electrically via a single or double battery module or by hybrid electric via an engine generator configuration. The added width means the unit offers increased productivity and is especially well suited to larger areas such as football and rugby pitches. The decreased ground pressure is particularly beneficial
where maintaining synthetic fibre integrity is paramount such as on DESSO GrassMaster Hybrid systems. Users also benefit from the accuracy and cleanliness of cut from the ATT 30” SMARTCut.
start engine provide a car-like driving experience.
The X590 comes with a choice of 122 or 137cm (48 or 54in) mower decks, both with an adjustable height of cut from 25 to 102mm (1 to 4in). The new X115R lawn tractor is now John Deere’s entry level rear discharge/rear collect model. The high capacity 300litre collector means faster work with fewer stops to empty the clippings, which is quickly done from the operator’s seat.
The X105 lawn tractor is now the smallest model, and the lowest
priced, in John Deere’s established X100 range. Its compact size makes it ideally suited to smaller grass areas, and for manoeuvring in tight spaces like intricately landscaped gardens and through narrow gateways.
In addition to these three new models, the popular X125 lawn tractor has been updated for 2015 with a more powerful engine and a higher specification seat and steering wheel, for improved cut quality and comfort.

Mowers tackle budget cuts
Dedicated ride-on mowers offer the quality of cut to meet contract specifications, but can also offer the versatility to cope with less frequent mowing cycles and offer year round use, reports Jane Carley.
UK councils are being forced to consider either selling or disposing of the management of some of their green spaces, according to research conducted by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).
Figures in the HLF’s ‘State of UK Public Parks 2014’ report reveals that 86 per cent of council park departments have experienced cuts to their budgets. The majority of those asked had seen cuts of 20 per cent or more to their revenue budgets and15 per cent of the UK’s local
authorities have had to find savings of more than 30 per cent
The report has shown that although the majority of park managers and half of users thought their parks were in good condition, their concern is that this will quickly decline.
Local authorities and park departments face increasing pressure to implement further cuts meaning that investment in good machinery is imperative for long term plans, and this is where purpose-built kit comes in, suggests Toro.
Toro’s zero-turn ride-on offering starts with the new Titan, launching this spring - a semi-commercial range, perfect for lighter-duty users who still want commercial features
Within the landscape contractor range, the Z Master Commercial 2000 122cm mower offers value for budget-minded businesses, suggests the company.
The petrol-powered Z Master Professional 6000 range includes the newly launched reardischarge 74942TE model which has a 152cm deck, driven by an 852cc Kawasaki petrol engine. Toro’s deck technology and the use of counter-rotating blades offers a high quality of cut and grass dispersion, even when cutting longer grass.
Topping out the Z Master line, the Professional 7000 Series is a range of three diesel-powered machines with cutting widths of up to 152cm. With a choice of rear or side discharge units in the range and accessories including baggers and striping kits, there are options to meet any local challenge.
Other design features of the 6000 and 7000 series offer increased efficiency, reduced cost of ownership and productivity where resource and budgets are tight. The Toro Z Stand allows the operator to elevate the front of the mower without tools, to change blades or tyres and perform under-deck maintenance – decreasing downtime and eliminating costly transport time. Attention is also given to operator
comfort with padded cushions, deluxe suspension and armrests to reduce fatigue on longer cutting days.
Toro zero-turn mowers are all covered by a commercial warranty of 4-5 years or 5001200 hours for peace of mind.
New launch
Ransomes Jacobsen has launched the first two machines in a series of new mowers, manufactured at their European headquarters in Ipswich. Primarily targeted at the municipal sector, the MP range will provide multiple options from a single design platform.
The Ransomes MP493 and MP653 wide area rotary mowers are powered by 49hp and 65hp Kubota diesel engines and feature three all-new rotary decks – one out-front and two wing decks.
The MP493 will offer significant fuel savings as a result of its reduced weight, says Ransomes Jacobsen. The 49hp Kubota engine powers a mechanicalover-hydraulic drive system and features the same pedal arrangement as the latest Ransomes Highway 3, Parkway 3 and HR300.
It also has the same control unit, which includes a display screen providing real-time feedback plus diagnostic and regular servicing information.
An optional road legal lighting kit is available and when fitted, is positioned not to impede visibility to the front cutting deck.
latest European Stage IIIB-compliant turbocharged engine which uses advanced electronics for more precise control, the 65hp version of the MP also has enough residual power to support a fully air-conditioned cab.
Using an electronic-over-hydraulic drive system, the advanced controller facilitates ‘drive-bywire’ and cruise control as well as allowing the mowing speed and transport speeds to be adjusted and set using a password code.
There are three selectable drive modes on the MP653. In Automatic mode a fuel saving system activates when the machine come to a stop; it automatically idles the engine reducing fuel consumption. There’s also an electronic interface which maintains the quality of cut when the engine is under maximum load.
In Manual mode automatic functions are disabled and the mower reacts and drives like a standard mechanical-overhydraulic drive machine.
Creep mode disables the cutting units and limits the transport speed to 8kph, ideal for manoeuvring in tight areas such as workshops and loading
A 150 mm breakback system on the wing
decks helps prevent damage if contact is made with an obstacle. All wearing parts on the decks bolt to the framework and are easily replaceable should they become damaged or worn.
Wing decks come in 3.0, 3.3 and 3.5 metres working widths with height of cut from 25-120mm. Transport width is just 1.65 metres with the wing decks folded. The front deck has 160mm of ground clearance for kerb climbing and can be lifted to give access for blade maintenance.
The ISO-mounted operator’s platform has a foldable ROPS with deck lift and lower controls and weight transfer button located on the armrest with the remaining controls and information screen in a removable console on top of the fuel tank.
Both mowers feature the SureTrac traction control system, which automatically transfers power from a slipping front wheel to the opposite rear wheel, and ensures superior control
ATT’s innovation takes in ride-on mowers
Hustler Turf Equipment displayed ATT’s innovative TMSystem fitted to a Triple Greens mower at the recent GIS in America.
The beauty of the TMSystem is that it has an appropriate SMART cassette to Aerate, Brush, DeThatch, Groom, Level, Scarify or Top Dress.
Furthermore, using the appropriate chassis adaptor kit, the system is fully compatible
with all main-stream makes of triplex greens mowers and lightweight fairway mowers, like John Deere, Jacobsen, Toro and Hustler Turf, as well as ATT’s dedicated 22” INFiNiSystem pedestrian unit.
The system makes for a versatile piece of equipment that saves the need to buy individual machines or the need to buy OEM cutting reels.
when hill climbing or working on side slopes. They also feature four-wheel drive in reverse, which improves traction when reversing uphill. For additional safety, the optional TST tilt control system can be fitted; it emits audible warnings when an operator exceeds the mower’s maximum working angle and eventually shuts down the mowing process, if the persistent warnings are ignored.
Commercial machines
Latest addition to the John Deere commercial front mower range is the 1500 Series TerrainCut.
Equipped with three-cylinder diesel engines, four-wheel drive, high-capacity rotary mower decks and a new optional grass and leaf collection system, the 1500 Series can mow and collect thick grass at high speeds and still produce a quality cut.
The line-up consists of five TerrainCut models from 24-36hp with a choice of 1.5 and 1.8m side- and rear-discharge decks with a mulching kit optionally available; the two largest models can be specified with a factory fitted cab.
Two-speed transmission on the 1580 and 1585 models allows faster working speeds and a transport speed of up to 25kph.
A new 25-152m height of cut adjustment improves cut quality and performance by stabilising the deck’s rake angle.
The 1585 model also comes with an increased axle load capacity to hold the high-specification cab as well as the optional quick-attach GLC1500 grass and leaf collection system.
Additional attachments such as a front-mounted brush or blade allow the mowers to be used year round for a wide range of other commercial applications, including both leaf and snow clearance.
Value for money
With budgets and spending cuts being necessary to so many, choosing a machine that will last the distance has never been so important according to Etesia UK’s operations director, Les Malin.
“It is absolutely vital to take a longer term view on purchases, as the cheapest initial price option may eventually come back to haunt you. Buying cheap is not always best practice, as generally machines of that type will lack the versatility and robustness you
need. My advice is to do your homework and look for a machine that combines multicapacity roles with reliability, longevity and efficiency.”
With a 1.24m cutting width, Etesia's Hydro 124 ride-on is the first mower that combines direct rear-ejection, integrated collection and high-lift emptying. Designed to mow up to 19,000 square metres per hour, the 600 litre grass box is filled to capacity every time and can be emptied to a maximum height of 1.8 metres without the operator leaving the driver’s seat.
Hydro 124s feature a front PTO for accessories which include sweeper, snow blade, scarifier, front-mounted cutting unit and blower for all-year use.
Les Malin adds: “These machines are designed to stand the test of time -H124 machines have been working day-in, day-out for the same commercial customers for the last 15 years or so.”
He comments that smaller models such as the Hydro 80 have become firm favourites for local authorities and contractors due to their versatility, agility and ability to access areas that in the past were only cut by pedestrian mowers.
“Machines such as these not only increase productivity but they also significantly reduce costs. They are renowned for having overall low running costs, enabling budgets to be stretched even further, and that has resulted in repeated orders from customers for many years.”
In the next couple of months, a new diesel model will joining the line-up - extending the fourwheel drive range.
“This much anticipated machine will have a host of accessories available to ensure we continue our ethos of producing not only the best wet collection machines on the market but machines that can handle multiple tasks as well,” says Les.
Adapting to terrain
The need to cope with longer grass has helped sales of the Amazone Profihopper as the combination of the horizontal flail SmartCut cutting rotor and the auger PowerCompactor system behind it makes sure that it cuts cleanly and removes the cut material to the hopper, explains Brand Manager Simon Brown.
“The flail rotor shreds the longer lengths of grass down into manageable chunks so that the hopper capacity is better utilised and the resulting cuttings compost down quicker whereas a rotary mower tries to handle the full stalk length and then blocks up the blower collection system.” He adds: “Even if you are
mulching rather than ‘cut and collect’ the shorter clippings look better when left on the ground and disappear quicker into the sward. High-lift emptying of the hopper enables councils to cart material away in lorries or trailers as well as the option of tipping directly into a big bag hung on the back of the hopper which can then be craned away from tighter loading areas.”
The exchange of grass for wild flowers to reduce the frequency of cuts has also helped the Profihopper, Simon reckons.
“We have councils now who are growing wild flowers on roadside embankments so that there is only one cut per year. The ability of the Profihopper to scarify means that we can produce the perfect scalped surface for the wild flower mixes to be sown into as well as then mulching them down in the autumn post-flowering to get the seeds to drop before picking up and cleaning down the verges ready for next year’s regrowth. These residues can also be carted away in big bags.”
The Profihopper range now includes three zero-turn modelsthe lever-controlled zDrive and steering wheel models, the twowheel drive iDrive and the 4WDi.
Launched last year, the SmartCut chevron blade layout improves quality of cut when working on fine lawn finishes and when cutting in wet conditions on fine turf.
Other updates include a new 40 litre fuel tank for longer working between fill-ups, a new expansion tank position for the radiator so that the level can be monitored without lifting any guards and strapping points for
roping onto a trailer, all offering easier operation.
The roll bar now complies with the latest EN ISO 5395 safety regulation while operators can benefit from a new Grammer heated seat option. For improved security, Datatag marking is standard fit for 2015 models.
Upgrades and improvements
Gianni Ferrari has upgraded its PG Ride-on mower with a round of ergonomic improvements for the 28hp out-front mower unit. These include a new electronic control unit with easy to read waterproof display plus an Isomounted footrest to minimise vibration to the operator and control panel and levers positioned for easy use.
The combined action of the front collection deck and the suction turbine cleans and collects effectively in parks and public areas and the Gianni Ferrari PG machines are popular for maintaining playgrounds, school courtyards, sports fields, campsites and in all those situations where cleanliness and safety are essential for the enjoyment of green spaces.
Compact size also gives the PG manoeuvrability and easy access in city traffic, including roundabouts, pavements and roundabouts.
In addition the Gianni Ferrari PG diesel versions can be fitted with a choice of rotary or flail decks, aerators, sweepers and snow ploughs, offering year round use.

Cub Cadet has launched the Tank SZ60, a commercial zero-turn lawn tractor with a steering wheel, which is available from EP Barrus.
Improved stability and precision control with four-wheel steering delivers a quality cut even on 20deg inclines, says the company.
The deck offers automotive-grade corrosion resistance due to a dual layer of e-coat and powder paint.
Heavy-duty, remote canister air filtration system and premium cooling system provide a durable, long-life design.
Powered by a 22hp Kawasaki OHV FX series engine, the
mower uses a dual hydrostatic transmission, and has a cut width of 1.52m from its three-blade deck, with cut height adjustable from 26-117mm. A mulching kit can be specified.
The Tank SZ60 is designed to be comfortable to ride, with a highback elasticity vibration control (EVC) comfort seat and an adjustable soft grip steering wheel increases manoeuvrability.
Zero turn
Grasshopper manufactures a range of diesel powered mid- and front-mounted zero-turn mowers from 21hp to 30hp, supplied in the UK by RECO. All mid mounted models can be fitted with the 4X rear discharge deck.
RECO’s Patrick Desmond comments: “Over the last five years local authorities and contractors have been pushed to maintain standards whilst
Pedestrian
facing major staffing and budgetary restraints and finding machines that can meet these demands can be difficult. Local authorities have selected Grasshopper as their mower of choice and in particular the Grasshopper 430D.”
“This 30hp model is powered by a fuel-efficient Kubota diesel engine which when combined with a 4X rear discharge deck offers a cut quality that a normal rear discharge deck would struggle to produce. Its four-blade design allows grass to be cut cleanly by the front three blades and then spread evenly across the full width of the deck by the fourth, rear-mounted spreading blade. The result is no windrowing or clumping.”
“Many users describe the finish as what would they expect from a mulching deck. Another plus with this deck is it requires less horsepower to run due to its fully open back design which allows the cut grass to escape freely without any power loss. Customers also report a significant saving in fuel because of this.”
“When you consider that a zeroturn mower is at least 20 per cent more productive and significantly cheaper to purchase and run than a traditional outfront rotary, it is no surprise more local authorities and contractors have started to look at this type of commercial mower more closely. The machines are very simple to
service and maintain with just two grease points on the whole machine. The hydraulic system used by Grasshopper is highly efficient and only requires an oil and filter change every 1000hrs.”
Reduced frequency of grasscutting has two immediate physical effects: the longer grass may mean a different mechanical method of cutting is needed, such as a flail as opposed to rotary, and also the increased effort involved in the action of cutting will test the machine’s strength – not only of its motor, but the cutting system, suggests the STM Co, suppliers of the Scag range.
Having had several instances of organisations finding that ride-on machines selected originally on price rather than strength and capability are not up to the task of reduced cutting programmes, the STM Co’s recommended approach is the Scag Turf Tiger zero turn ride-on – with an engine range up to 35hp - fitted with the Humus ‘System Flail’ head.
The low-profile underslung head gives the true benefit of the ZeroTurn capability, states STM.
While the Humus flail deck can cope with extra-long and tough grass or brush with the benefit of a roller to leave an acceptable finish, the Scag Turf Tiger gives the option to utilise the traditional rotary deck and optional grasscatcher to cope with the majority of conditions later in the season.

Kubota front deck mowers meet contractor demands
Grounds maintenance specialist Tom Rimell, owner and director of Smart Cut and TFN Landscape has purchased five of Kubota’s F3890 front deck mowers, part of a large fleet of Kubota equipment operated by the contractor over the years.
The F3890 mower is designed to cope in difficult conditions and is ideal for mowing large areas quickly, such as the substantial estates that Tom and his team manage on daily basis for local councils and housing associates including Taylor Wimpey.
Tom commented on the new mowers: “The F3890 ride-on mowers are both easy to operate and fuel efficient when carrying out demanding work on a variety of landscapes. The work we undertake on a day-today basis requires the use of
reliable machines that can cope with cutting large areas of land. The F3890 mowers allow us to deal with customer demand and carry out tasks within the scheduled time period allocated for a project.”
Incorporating a 61 litre fuel tank to reduce the number of fuelling stops needed to complete long jobs, the mower features a side and rear discharge mower deck, which can tilt up to 90 degrees for easy cleaning and blade sharpening. Kubota is repeating its spring cash back offer for ride-on mowers this year.
Available until 30th June 2015, buyers of the GR2120 can claim back £300, whilst £200 is being offered to purchasers of the T1880 and GR1600-II ride-on mowers.
Metrac H5X passes the Tamworth test
A year after taking delivery of a 59hp four-cylinder diesel powered hydrostatic Reform Metrac H5X mowing tractor, Tamworth Borough Council Street Care Manager Chris Silk says: “The H5X has enabled us to maintain our more difficult sloped areas to a far higher standard and this has also been achieved with a reduction in cut frequency. It has also greatly improved operator safety.
“The added bonuses for us are that we also use it for amenity mowing on open spaces and football pitches. It has also proved to be an excellent follow-up machine on our gang mowing route and for maintenance of tall grass and herbage on several nature reserves.”
The council swapped to the Reform H5X to have a machine that could be utilised all year round rather than parked up from October to March. It has worked throughout the current winter season combined with a compact side arm flail on small hedges and shrub beds.
“Reliability has not been an issue and the H5X has given us flexibility when it has been most needed.”
Simon Richard, UK Agent for the Reform and Muthing ranges adds, “The Metrac H5X is a critically safe machine; manoeuvrable, versatile and well-suited to working on slopes and for the widest range of grounds maintenance tasks. We are certainly seeing an increase in demand based on their multifunctionality and lifetime cost benefits. The balanced weight distribution and crab steer function are the ideal combination to enable the operator to work safely at angles of up to 45 degrees.”
“The
rolling seat to compensate for working angle and a 26 litre fuel tank for more efficient working.
The SG280’s 50-50 weight distribution, together with a 1500mm wheel base and low centre of gravity is designed to offer stability and safety of operation required on steep inclines.
Simon Richard, the UK sales agent for Shibaura concludes, “We have been all over the UK carrying out demonstrations and the response to the SG280 has been superb.
“It is the affordable, costeffective solution for the local authority and professional sectors where lifetime cost, value for money and addressing their legal obligations towards health and safety are the concerns.”
Two machines in one
Through the Platts Harris, Darley Dale dealership, Mansfield based Weedfree Contractors have purchased a 3 cylinder 28hp Shibaura SG 280 Slope Mower.
Weedfree director Tim Bower said: “Platts Harris suggested we test the Shibaura as a replacement for a competitor machine we had used for some time and once we saw it at work we knew it was right for our business.
“We feel we are getting two machines in one as the SG280 gives us the capability to maintain both flat and more difficult sloped areas. It gives us both working time and cost saving benefits and will also enhance operator safety when working at up to 30 degrees.”
The SG280 complies with all current emission regulations and weighs in at 890kg with 443kg to the front and 447kg to the rear. This solid 50 - 50 weight distribution, allied to the 1500mm wheel base and low centre of gravity gives stability and safety of operation.
Simon Richard, the UK Sales Agent for the Shibaura compact tractor range added: “The SG280 is a proven multi-task tractor for the professional sector and a replacement in a fleet rather than an ‘add-on’ making it one of the most cost effective compacts available.”

TigerTurf UK, has enhanced its market leading landscaping range with an advanced alternative to natural lawns and traditional synthetic surfaces.
Edén, TigerTurf’s new landscaping creation, combines pioneering light-reflective technology with authentic colourways inspired by nature, to create a surface that looks as lush as a well-kept, natural lawn, from any direction.
Where other artificial surfaces require pile to face in the direction of the property or focal point to avoid a glare, the profiled yarn used in Edén gives each blade an omni-directional surface. As a result, the turf –which has a pile height of 30mm – can be laid in any direction, leading to time savings for installers, and increased satisfaction for end-users.
