Pressure group calls for a new type of leadership for parks
The Parks Alliance has given a cautious welcome to the Government’s announcement that councils across the country are to benefit from more than £13 million of new funding for parks and green spaces.
A total of £9.7 million of the money is to be used to cover maintenance costs to essential playground repairs and the creation of new green spaces, and an additional £2.75 million for the pocket parks plus programme to support communities to get more involved in their local parks.
A further £1.2 million has been provided to the National Trust and The National Lottery Heritage Fund’s Future Parks Accelerator initiative to test new and innovative approaches to managing and funding parks in the future.
Matthew Bradbury, chairman of The Parks Alliance, said: “After all the hard work of all those working for parks, let’s hope it leads to long term commitment to support parks with the funding they so deserve.”
Meanwhile the work of the Parks Action Group carries on in devising and implementing Parks policy in response the 2017 Select Committee Inquiry into Public Parks.
TPA is working closely with key interests in the Parks sector and across government to prepare a Business Case for Parks that will set out the social, economic and environmental returns that can be secured for local communities, government and the private sector from continued investment into our much loved parks and green spaces.
But the TPA has also pointed to a previous announcement - the creation of the Government’s new Integrated Communities Action Plan - as potentially more significant than the funding.
The Action Plan contains a range of commitments from government to support community integration including boosting the capacity of local leadership, measures to support new migrants and local
people and improving the places where they can meet, mix and share experiences.
The last point recognises the long held view that good parks can play a crucial role in building successful and cohesive communities.
TPA points out that parks are a key social asset like community centres and libraries that provide public spaces that people, from all different backgrounds, use creating the thousands of small interactions that lead to positive bonds of understanding and mutual respect. In this way Parks play a key role in building social capital- the glue that holds communities together.
“So there is an important place for parks in the likely future place based approaches to tackling the problems of the UK’s left behind communities,” added a TPA spokesman.
“But there is also an important
challenge. In these places someone needs to champion parks.
There needs to be a new kind of leadership in the parks sector that can navigate the complex place based partnerships and present the business case for parks, a case built on data and evidence
that demonstrates the social, economic and environmental returns that can be achieved by investing in good quality parks and green spaces to help revitalise communities.”

There is much to support in the Government’s pledge to support the UK’s parks and green spaces with a £13m funding package.
It signals that politicians are aware of the importance of these parks and sites and also of the highly professional industry and skilled workers who help maintain them to the highest quality.
And yet you would be forgiven if your initial response to the Government’s funding was: “Is that all?” Considering the value of our parks – in terms of both economic and health and well-being benefits – and the size of the UK industry that supports them and the financial contribution it makes, £13m is a drop in the ocean.
When you consider that that amount multiplied several times over has been squeezed out of local authority budgets for parks and green spaces over the last 10-20 years, then the Government’s pledge does seem too small. That is why it is heartening to see the likes of The Parks Alliance, the LGA, API and Fields in Trust qualifying their support for the funding announcement with calls for a longer-term, more sustainable programme of support.
Everyone within the industry needs to back their calls for a greater level of support and recognition of the importance of our parks and green spaces. The campaign has only just started.
This month we have our Professional Groundscare supplement, with a focus on fertilisers, grass seeds and wildflowers and Jane Carley’s look at the latest technology being deployed in ride-on mowers. Elsewhere

Industry bodies offer advice on impact of extreme weather
The Turf Growers Association and BALI have both responded to concerns about the impact of extreme weather throughout the year on the availability of landscaping materials.
The TGA points to 2018 as being a year of extremes, starting with the “Beast from the East” which hit the UK in early March and then a prolonged cold and wet period for the remainder of March and early April, the UK then headed into a recordbreaking hot summer-the average temperature beating that of 1976.
All agricultural industries battled the unusual weather and throughout the UK yields were diminished, its says. The turf industry also faced similar pressures from the year’s weather; the difficult growing conditions and the increase in demand has
caused a winter shortage of turf. Looking forward and assuming that this year will not see a repeat of last year’s weather conditions, the TGA maintains that British turf growers will be in a position to get back to some normality and begin to work on a slow but sure recovery.
Meanwhile, BALI has recently been contacted by members concerning turf availability and have received reports of suppliers struggling to provide enough product for the needs of the industry. Research by BALI has also revealed this is currently a widespread issue and has resulted in restricted supplies to several contractors.
Like all living products, turf is grown on a cycle of production. The length of this varies between suppliers from less than 12 months to 2 years depending
Timberplay scoop Best Supplier Award at NFAN Conference for the second year
on composition of species, substrate and weather.
The prevailing weather throughout the UK for large parts of the past 2 years (i.e. the most recent growing cycle) has, at some point, been drier than usual, hotter than usual, colder than usual or wetter than usual – depending on the geographic location of the grower.
The effect of the weather on stocks of turf has been twofold:
1. It has presented growers with significant challenges to ensure turf is growing adequately despite the extremes of weather.
2. The conditions throughout 2018 up to the present day have presented landscape contractors with favourable conditions for laying turf and consequently a sustained demand.
Whilst periods of warmer, wetter, drier or sunnier weather is not unusual, the cumulative effects of several extreme weather events over an entire growing season has started to affect output of turf. Due to the weather, root establishment has been poorer, which means the rolls of turf cannot be lifted as easily or quickly by machinery.
When root establishment is poor -as has been the case recently -the soil falls from the roots of turf lifted, meaning the useable amount of turf is significantly lower than normal. Some growers have reported losing 1 roll of turf for every 5 lifted - far higher than would be expected normally.
BALI is also aware of concerns regarding the cost of turf, which have arisen around the
same time as this shortage. A separate working group will be established to investigate this. By publishing this statement BALI hopes to raise awareness of the issues surrounding turf supply.
There can be no blame associated with this issue, but the industry – both suppliers and users – must ensure lines of communication are open and dialogue established to
enable measures which allow the expectations of clients to be managed.
Availability of water resources and climate change are issues likely to affect many other areas of the industry in the long term, and these are challenges we must face together.

Fuel poverty hits home for people in horticulture
Perennial’s services team is speaking regularly to people in horticulture who face difficult choices about whether to heat their homes or go without other necessities such as food or daily essentials.
Fuel poverty is caused by low incomes, high energy prices and energy inefficient housing. February 15 is Fuel Poverty Awareness Day, organised by National Energy Action. Perennial is working with a range of agencies to raise awareness of the scale of the issue.
The reality is that the number of people seeking support at times of crisis is continuing to increase, with many unable to pay for everyday items such as food, clothing and heating. Research has shown that the number of households already in debt to their energy supplier before winter began has grown by more than 300,000 in the past year. They owed an average of £134 each.
Julia Hayne, Director of Services at Perennial, says: “Poverty touches every aspect of a person’s life, including their physical and mental health. We are visiting and taking calls from more people than ever desperate to gain the specialist support they need to break the cycle of poverty they find themselves in.”
Over 80% of all fuel-poor households are considered to have additional care or support needs, meaning they either include children, the elderly, or someone with a long-term illness or disability. Families with the highest rates of fuel poverty are lone parents (26.4%); multi-person households (15.2%); and couples with dependent children (14.7%).
Julia continues: “Over the past year we have also seen the growing impact of poverty on the children of people working in horticulture. Crisis and
emergency support for food, energy, housing and day to day living costs accounts for over 44% of all the financial assistance we provided in 2018 (from personal items to crisis grants), which has increased overall by 16% over the last 2 years.”
Many self-employed people and small businesses tell Perennial that cashflow is a challenge over the winter months, with some relying heavily on personal savings until spring when work often picks up. The services team can help people budget to avoid a cash flow crisis either with tailored one-to-one advice, or via the online budgeting tool available on the Perennial website.
Physical health issues caused by cold homes predominantly relate to cardiovascular and respiratory problems. This can be a real issue for people working in horticulture who rely on good physical health to remain in work. Low temperatures also diminish resistance to infection and encourage damp and mould growth in homes. Cold indoor
conditions have also been linked to poor mental health resulting from anxiety and stress. Social isolation can be exacerbated when a home does not provide a welcoming environment and there is evidence that cold homes can reduce educational attainment.
Julia concludes: “Advice and support and practical heating and insulation improvements can help address many of the problems associated with fuel poverty. We are ready to help anyone working in, or retired from horticulture with free and confidential advice and support for as long as it’s needed. Our friendly and experienced team is just a phone call away and we urge anyone who is struggling financially or worried about fuel or other bills over the winter months, to contact us as soon as possible.”

Kärcher EASY!Force sets the new standard
Kärcher has announced that the revolutionary EASY!Force trigger gun is available across all Kärcher hot and cold Professional pressure washers, setting the new standard in highpressure cleaning.
The EASY!Force trigger gun unlocks the power to comfortable cleaning, allowing users the freedom to master any highpressured task with effortless control. This innovative trigger gun provides full power with zero force, letting the water do the work.
Whether using a compact cold water pressure washer for those on the move cleaning jobs where easy transportation is essential, or a hot water model for cutting through tougher grease and dirt, EASY!Force puts the power and control effortlessly in your hands.
Kärcher has made substantial improvements to the trigger gun, transforming the user experience by changing how the trigger is activated.
Now located at the rear of the gun it is the recoil of the water jet that automatically presses the trigger
into the palm, contributing to stress-free and effortless use.
The reduced force action prevents hand and finger strain and in turn muscle cramps, allowing for longer operating periods. The introduction of this new and patented design showcases Kärcher’s investment into innovation to improve user experience and health – with Kärcher, cleaning with high-pressure has never been easier.
Kärcher has also included a redesign of the lance and high-
pressure hose, which features the new trapezoidal EASY!Lock thread. This new lock combines the speed of a quick release coupling with the safety of a threaded connection with only a single turn, saving you time and improving productivity.
The valve within the EASY!Force trigger gun has also undergone significant improvement, with the ball and valve seat now manufactured in a high-grade ceramic which will ensure a long lasting and reliable seal.
GKB deliver specifically adapted Topair
GKB Machines Operations Manager for UK & Ireland, Tom Shinkins has recently delivered a Topair to Harrow School to assist the team of 11 ground staff and golf wardens improve and maintain both the quality and playability of every pitch/course and outdoor sports surfaces at the school.
Mike Kemmett, Grounds Manager of Harrow School explains, “I initially tried the 6ft machine, and although this was great on the pitches and outfields, I wanted something slightly more compact so I could use on the golf course greens and tees to help combat the grubs with the removal of many products.
Reesink’s range of small tractors just got bigger
Reesink Turfcare’s range of small tractors just got bigger with the introduction of the nimble TYM T194.
With the agility of a mower and the additional features and practicality of a small tractor, the T194 adds a completely new dimension to the TYM range.
The T194 joins the popular subcompact TS25 to bring customers who don’t need a larger framed mid-duty model but need the most amount of power, productivity, versatility and efficiency one compact package can offer, more choice.
TYM sales manager Steven Haynes says: “We’re responding to customer demand by adding another small product to our range of tractors.
“It appears customers, predominantly those with large gardens or small estates, and contractors, caravan parks
and many sports venues, want a powerful option in a compact package. When it comes to towing, moving and maintenance tasks, these tractors are more than capable.”
Designed to appeal to customers looking to more commercial alternative to the ride on lawn mower and those wanting a small multi-purpose product, the T194 takes this to the next level and more.
TYM had simplicity and practicality in mind when designing the T194 and because of this they have equipped it with features which customers are sure to appreciate, such as a powerful dual range HST transmission which includes the fatique busting “auto throttle” system which conveniently links the HST pedal to the engine throttle.
A simple and easy to understand dash panel is fitted to give the
operator an overview of all of the tractor’s functions. In addition, TYM has worked on the overall control layout on this new model to ensure the tractor is easy to use with all key controls falling neatly to hand.
The T194 is equipped as standard with a 54-inch mid-mounted deck, with cutting heights from one to four inches. Mowing heights can be adjusted from the operator’s seat via the onboard height-of-cut lever which is easy and intuitive to set.
In addition, the T194 can also be specified with a front loader, further enhancing the uses for this small but powerful machine.
For customers looking to do more, the tractor has been equipped with category one three-point linkage and 540 rpm rear PTO which allows for numerous rear-mounted attachments to be fitted and enabling it to be used for other
tasks such as sweeping and aerating, leading Steven to say: “The T194 is a true allseason machine.”
Increasing the power in Reesink’s small tractor offering is the TS25. Upping the ante from 19hp in the T194 to 25hp in the TS25, the TS25 has been appealing to a similar audience as the new T194 for a few years now, delivering all the benefits of the T194 but with more power.
With a hydraulic lift capacity of 600kg, it’s renowned for delivering superb value and outstanding performance. An optional front loader and middeck further increases its versatility opening it up to many more applications.
Steven concludes: “Reesink brought TYM to the UK market because its tractors deliver enhanced performance and engineering
“This disc slicing action would mean I can slit the greens very regularly to help fight against pest damage with minimal surface disruption and perform very quickly. So Tom built the machine like for like but in a 4ft version.”
Surrounded by 320 acres of sports fields ranging from AstroTurf pitches, numerous tennis courts, 16 winter pitches and nine cricket pitches through to a 9-hole golf course there is plenty for the groundsmen at Harrow School to be looking after. The modified Topair provides versatility and reliability to the teams’ daily maintenance program, the perfect addition to the family of GKB machines already purchased by Harrow School.
“The machines are probably the best built on the market, and what swings it for me is that the cost of parts should they ever need replacing are very reasonably priced - there are some products and companies that have cheaper machines but the upkeep of them if they go wrong have ridiculous costs to get running again,” Mike adds.
Alongside build quality at a reasonable cost, both in purchase and running costs, GKB Machines pride themselves on customer service and developing machines to meet the exact expectations and demands of the customer.

Key considerations for green roof design & specification
Green roofs are evolving rapidly, transforming from a specialist eco-feature to a more mainstream technology which can be seen on residential buildings of all shapes and sizes.
However, the success of a green roof depends on the specification which must not only consider the structure itself, but the location, orientation, shading and climate of the site.
Stuart Hicks from cold-applied liquid waterproofing specialist, Kemper System, discusses specification best practice for green roofs.
“Plants must be agreed from the outset as the roof will need to be designed accordingly,” he said.
“For example, wildflower meadows are a popular choice for large roof surfaces, but they need plenty of moisture, which means designing the roof
to accommodate the load and providing a deeper reservoir core.
“Alpine planting however, needs much less water to thrive so this will have less of an effect on the roof’s load bearing requirements, but will still need to be considered.
“It is also vital that location and prevailing climatic conditions are considered as these govern the amount of light, heat, shade and moisture the roof will receive.
“Surrounding buildings, which can influence shade and exposure to winds, should be taken into account. These factors must be assessed collectively to determine the viability of different types of planting.
“The effectiveness of the waterproofing membrane between the roof substrate and the green roof system is the most vital element of the specification. The membrane should be flexible enough
to cope with any post-build settlement, durable enough to cope with the planting’s load bearing requirements and have a sufficiently long service life to make the green roof viable.
A liquid waterproofing solution such as Kemperol V210 or Kemperol 2K-PUR can be cold applied either below or above the insulation, depending on the type of insulation used.
These systems are FLL certified as root resistant, so there is no risk of damage even as plants mature.
Alternatively, Kempergro from Kemper System combines recycled, renewable and sustainable components to provide a complete waterproof roofing and green roof system from a single source supplier.

Green roof vital to awardwinning development
The regeneration at Clapham Park involved the demolition of old housing stock to make way for new affordable homes.
The five-storey building with 21 dwellings incorporating the latest rooftop technology which blends a biodiverse green roof and unified solar PV array.
One of the major challenges of the project was the roof area, which at only 500m² needed to include a green roof and a renewable energy system to meet the main objectives of sustainability and energy efficiency of the development highlighted by the planning committee.
The roof contributed towards requirements under National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) Chapter 11: Conserving and enhancing the natural environment and The London Plan 2011 Policy 5.2 – Minimising Carbon Dioxide Emissions, Policy 5.3 – Sustainable Design and Construction and Policy 5.7 –Renewable Energy.
The green roof is layered with a raised PV array so that the
entire roof qualifies as a green roof whilst also providing energy generation.
The Bauder BioSOLAR system has National House Building Control (NHBC) approval and meets local authority building control (LABC) requirements. The system was installed on zero falls roof deck, making it a very cost-effective solution.
The biodiverse green roof which includes 35 plant species recognised by the RHS as Perfect for Pollinators, covers the totality of the roof area and offers a large variety of vegetation.
The building reduces its carbon impact with the highly efficient PIR insulation and generates approximatively 10% of the flats usage with a maximum possible output of 75kWp from the 70 PV modules.
The solar PV mounting units are ballasted by the substrate and vegetation, removing the need for any penetrating products in the waterproofing.

Reduce the cost of implementing and using a herbicide-free alternative
The search for herbicide-free solutions is becoming increasingly commonplace in the UK.
One inhibitor to adopting alternative technologies has been the perceived cost when compared to conventional, chemical methods.
A more holistic examination shows that this comparison is misplaced: alternative solutions provide the benefit of providing instant results, multi-functional options beyond weed control, and the ability to be used in all but the most extreme weather conditions, in the most sensitive of environments.
The efforts made by the user also improve their own clients and public perception of their working

methods and CSR commitments.
Appropriate planning up front allows users to better plan their resource allocation and improve staff morale by providing satisfying work during normal working hours.
In 2018, Foamstream developed improvements to its operating methods that achieve as much as a 50% reduction in water consumption with a further 33% increase in foam efficiency.
So now the economic argument joins all the others in making Foamstream a compelling alternative to traditional chemical methods.

INNSA guidance assisting buyers of Japanese knotweed remediation services
UK Trade Body INNSA has released specific guidance to assist buyers of Japanese knotweed remediation services.
This guidance will be particularly useful for local authority procurement departments, particularly in light of recent government intervention requiring that all amenity herbicide application is carried out by contractors who are members of the Amenity Assured scheme.
Following recent reporting of the “Swansea Japanese knotweed study” released in
April 2018, INNSA noted widespread misreporting and misunderstanding of the results of the study, which is consistent with a lack of knowledge about this area of significant concern, which costs the UK economy over £160m every year.
As a minimum, INNSA recommend that buyers only use contractors who are members of the Amenity Assured scheme, both for quality assurance and to ensure that you are meeting your legal duties.

Agrochemical company unveils Diamond technology to treat Horsetail
Time to safeguard herbicides
Safe and appropriate use of herbicide products not only helps to ensure that active ingredients fulfil the requirements of amenity managers, but can also help to safeguard their future availability and effectiveness, points out Bayer.
Roundup Development Manager Barrie Hunt explains: “Glyphosate has been reapproved until at least 2022 and we now need play our part to ensure that we continue to have this important herbicide at our disposal to control weeds in the amenity sector in the long term.”
Good Plant Protection Practice and an Integrated Weed Management Strategy are key to demonstrating stewardship and responsible
use of plant protection products which can help safeguard active ingredients, he comments.
“Whenever possible, use mixtures of herbicides, and consider integrating non-chemical control measures,” explains Mr Hunt. “Opportunities for selective applications are limited in groundcare, but spot spraying can be an extremely effective approach and application equipment technology is developing all the time. Incorporating a residual partner with a different mode of herbicidal action is also possible in some circumstances.”
The mild winter has meant continued growth in many parts of the country, but groundcare
professionals should resist the urge to make an early start on weed control, he emphasises.
“Timeliness is essential to get the best out of products – check label recommendations for the correct application timing for the weed species being targeted. Planning applications carefully to ensure that the active ingredient is at its most effective helps to prevent survivors.”
Effective treatment of weeds also helps reduce the risk of herbicide resistance, a looming threat to our ability to maintain control, says Mr Hunt. “There are currently no known cases of glyphosate resistance in the UK. However, globally, resistance has evolved as a result of repeated use and over-reliance on this important active ingredient.”
Development of resistance in Europe is mainly due to repetitive or inappropriate practices, he explains: “These practices include over-reliance on of the same herbicide i.e. glyphosate, not
following label recommendations and a lack of, or limited, Integrated Weed Management strategies.”
Treating weeds at the wrong growth stage and having to spray again is of particular concern, as repeat applications to surviving plants present the greatest risk of resistance developing.
“Monitor and assess herbicide performance after spraying to detect any loss in control, - good record-keeping is key to the early detection of resistance. If resistance is suspected, contact your supplier and/or the product manufacturer, and act quickly to prevent spreaduse a strategy involving alternative herbicides and non-chemical techniques. Then collect seed samples for testing to confirm resistance,” Mr Hunt advises.
“By being vigilant, and keeping good practice to the forefront we can help these valuable chemicals to continue to maintain the quality of sporting and leisure facilities.”
With the withdrawal of all products containing Glufosinateammonium from the market in January, a huge gap has been left for total weed control, including tough Invasive weeds such as Horsetail or Marestail.
Both are highly invasive deep routed perennial weeds that affect a variety of areas including Cropped Areas, Industrial sites, Amenity Vegetation & Bare areas; it is also particularly difficult to treat with some resistance shown to many other weed killers.
The solution? Agrochemical company Agrigem have unveiled a brand new and exclusive product called ‘Diamond’.
‘Diamond’ replaces the popular ‘Pearl’ & is a fastacting total herbicide which offers excellent results on many tough weeds including horsetail and is certainly the new ‘go-to’ product for total weed control.
What does Diamond contain?
Diamond is a soluble concentrate which contains the following active ingredients: 160g/l of 2,4-d + 240g/l of glyphosate. It is available in two pack sizes, 1L or 5L, with the 5L covering 10,000m2
K51
Multi-purpose trailed or pushed spreader for salt, sand and fertiliser.
Why use Diamond?
The active ingredients in Diamond offer quicker control of tough weeds, as well as penetrating deeper into the root system than glyphosate alone; making it suitable for seedbed clean-up. Many weeds that are often difficult to kill with glyphosate will be controlled by Diamond. These include: Bracken, Horsetail, Perennial Nettle, Ragwort, Rhododendron and Sycamore.
Once on the foliage, the 2,4-d will break down the leaf tissue, enabling the glyphosate to translocate around the plant far quicker and deeper. Diamond is approved for use on Amenity Vegetation, Orchards, Hard Surfaces (Railway Ballast), and Green Cover on non-cropped areas. Using Diamond will also reduce the amount of glyphosate used per hectare by up to half.
Where can we buy Diamond?
Diamond is exclusively available through Agrigem, who offer next day delivery. Diamond will also be available through various distributors across the country. Please contact the BASIS & FACTS trained Technical Team at Agrigem for a full illustration of how Diamond could fit within your spray programme.

Trade body route provides Japanese knotweed guidance
A national trade body is signposting the public to a wealth of free advice on Japanese knotweed. The move comes after a Parliamentary inquiry regarding the invasive, nonnative plant was held recently at the House of Commons.
During the course of the meeting, the Science and Technology Committee was keen to see new information provided, to help those affected by the plant access latest guidance.
While the information is being developed, the Property Care Association is maintaining its Invasive Weed Control Document Library, including guidance notes, information leaflets and a Code of Practice - all available for free download - to help provide insight and guidance.
PCA chief executive, Steve Hodgson, was one of a number of industry representatives who spoke to the Science and Technology Committee. Steve said: “The outcome of all this will hopefully be positive. It is anticipated that RICS will try and draw people together for the common task of revising their seminal Information Paper on Japanese knotweed.
“This is a process we are very keen to be part of and one that will be supported by PCA and its members. In the meantime, we will continue to curate a range of information, produced by industry experts and academics, to help provide guidance on the plant, and other non-native species.”
The House of Commons’ Science and Technology Committee held a one-off oral evidence session on 22 January, to explore the science behind the effects of Japanese knotweed on the built environment.
The committee looked at issues including the scientific evidence surrounding the effects
of Japanese knotweed on the built environment and how the presence of the invasive weed in the UK affects mortgage lending decisions and property valuations.
It also looked at whether mortgage lending decisions relating to the presence of Japanese Knotweed are currently based on sound scientific evidence of its effects on the built environment, and what guidance for the sector currently exists.
Mr Hodgson added: “We welcome this review, particularly as it addresses two areas we have actively voiced concerns around, namely the science behind what impact the plant can have, and its impact on mortgage decisions.
“Despite the fact there are clear pathways to manage and control Japanese knotweed, all too often we encounter situations where homeowners are portrayed as living under siege with the plant.
“But since the PCA formed the Invasive Weed Control Group in 2012, we’ve always maintained the position that this plant is not a destroyer of buildings, and that it should just be regarded as any other type of property issue.
“However, we do need to consider that Japanese knotweed is deemed a nuisance by the UK government, and the EU Commission too, and the Court Of Appeal ruling against Network Rail in July (2018) which means landowners will be able to claim damages if Japanese knotweed encroaches on their property.
“The PCA has recently supported two university research projects in their development and both findings align with the cautious approach we have publicised in our Code of Practice and in our industry best practice. We need to continue the debate around Japanese knotweed to ensure the approach we take is measured, fit-for purpose and is built on the latest information we receive.
“Research is a key element in that approach and is something we will to continue to support, to give homeowners and mortgage lenders confidence in the issue. Now, following the Parliamentary review, we look forward to seeing greater clarity and clear guidance being presented on the situation.”

The precision spraying revolution will be digitised
John Deere is revolutionising spraying applications on amenity turf with the new GPS PrecisionSprayer, available exclusively for use with the ProGator heavy-duty utility vehicle.
This advanced technology system offers golf course managers and other turf professionals a proven, off-theshelf, integrated John Deere solution for precision spraying.
With features such as AutoTrac satellite guided automatic steering, a fullcolour in-cab touchscreen display and individual nozzle control, the easy-to-use GPS PrecisionSprayer increases application accuracy and consistency, lowers input costs through reduced overlaps and misses, helps protect the environment and increases productivity by reducing operator fatigue.
“The GPS PrecisionSprayer offers an innovative solution
that allows our customers to be more productive and accurate when maintaining turf,” says John Deere’s European turf sales & marketing manager Carlos Aragones.
“John Deere boasts over 20 years of GPS experience, which was vital when creating this new sprayer. We were able to take advantage of our industry leading knowledge of satellite guidance technology to develop a solution that supports our customers by increasing productivity and accuracy while reducing labour and material costs.”
One of the most notable features on the GPS PrecisionSprayer is AutoTrac, which helps to spray predetermined areas in less time with greater pass-to-pass accuracy. Another important benefit is individual nozzle control, which minimises application errors and reduces fatigue, as the operator does not need to focus on manually turning boom sections on and
off. Individual nozzles can be paired with AutoTrac guidance to limit wasted product applications caused by pass to pass overlaps and misses.
The GPS PrecisionSprayer utilises advanced satellite technology and mobile RTK (real-time kinematic) navigation down to accuracy levels of 2.5cm to ensure the reliability of boundary maps and allow users to create spray coverage maps, which also eliminates overlaps and increases productivity.

Growth of trade shows signals positive outlook for the industry
America, Korea, Canada and China to showcase their products and services at SALTEX 2018.
It means both the industry’s flagship shows appear to be going from strength to strength, with the addition of education programmes and other innovations undoubtedly helping to not only attract visitors but keep them in Birmingham and Harrogate for longer.
The British & International Golf Greenkeepers Association has reported excellent numbers following its annual exhibition, held in Harrogate, North Yorkshire in January 2019.
The BIGGA Turf Management Exhibition welcomed 4,500 individual delegates into the halls of the Harrogate Convention Centre, with the 154 exhibitors showcasing their wares in a new, innovative layout that enabled greater opportunities for interaction with visitors.
The total number of visits across the three days was 7,200 with an average visitor duration of 1.6 days, up by 13% on 2018.
The increase in duration was attributed to the greater opportunities for engagement, meaning visitors spent more time in the exhibition halls, alongside the expanded education programme that kept visitors around for additional days.
This year the Continue to Learn education programme increased with an additional 1,000 education opportunities made available. Visitors scanned into sessions 2,275 times, leading to a total of 6,123 hours of education being enjoyed throughout the week. This equates to more than two hours’ education for every golf club in the UK.
Meanwhile, the SALTEX 2018 post-show survey has revealed that an overwhelming amount of exhibitors reported hugely successful business results with many claiming that it was the most valuable event to date.
The 300 SALTEX exhibitors at NEC Birmingham back in November 2018 travelled from 18 countries with the majority being based in the UK. European exhibitors included those from the Netherlands, Finland, Turkey, Sweden, Israel, Belgium, Switzerland, Denmark, Italy and France. Further afield, exhibitors travelled from North

Deep aeration cures waterlogging long term
Heavy downpours of rain on compacted grass areas on sports pitches, bowling greens, golf courses and amenity areas can leave standing water, rendering them unusable and stopping play.
The action of normal aeration, use of machines and foot traffic over time can leave areas compacted and panning occurs, causing poor drainage and depriving grass roots of oxygen and nutrients.
Sports turf specialists Terrain Aeration have been providing a long-term solution to this for over 25 years, using one- metre deep penetration of the playing surface.
The Terrain Aeration Terralift machine not only solves the immediate compaction problem, the process has a beneficial effect that lasts many years. It works like this. The Terralift hammers a hollow probe one metre into the soil using a JCB road breaker gun (this is because the ground is usually so compact at depth that it needs this hammer to break through).
Once the probe has reached one metre depth, compressed air is released up to a maximum of 20Bar (280psi), the Terralift
being the only machine using such high air pressure, which is needed to fracture and fissure the soil. The probe is withdrawn and the process repeated using two-metre centre spacings on a staggeredgridpattern-thismeans that each shot interconnects with the previous ones.
Onthetailendoftheairblast, dried seaweed is injected which sticks to the walls of the fractures and fissures and, over time, expands and contracts with the moisture content in the soil - similar to “breathing”underground.
The 1½” probe holes created by the Terralift machine are backfilled with aggregate to provide a semi permanent aeration/ventilation shaft, helping to keep the whole aeration process working. The top 1” should be topped with the usual top dressing to encourage grassgrowthovertheprobeholes. The Terrain Aeration process is ecologically sound, there is no mess and once the pitch or green has been given a light mow it’s ready for play to resume.

Salsco greens rollers a timesaver for RAC
A top golf venue has reduced greens rolling time by nearly a third after investing in leadingedge machinery. Since purchasing two Salsco HP11-III greens rollers, The Royal Automobile Club has cut time devoted to the task from five and a half hours to three and a half hours daily, it reports.
“This is a massive reduction,” states Golf Course Manager Lee Strutt, who test-drove the machine on a visit to the Golf Industry Show in 2017. “The time saved frees up operators for other duties and that’s a major benefit.”
The HP11-III’s powerful Honda petrol engine delivers speeds up to 11mph, while three independently controlled rollers with 73in operating width cut a swathe through the time operators have traditionally taken for this aspect of greens upkeep.
“The rollers average five to six minutes a green,” explains Lee, who manages the 36-hole Championship Old and Coronation courses with a team of up to 26. In his three and half years in post, Lee has rung the changes in cultural practices across the 36-holes of what is one of Britain’s most prestigious member clubs and the HP11-IIIs fit into that strategy.
His investment in the high-end rollers is delivering benefits for both the greens team and players, by improving presentation and playability.
“The HP11-III can cover a serious amount of green quickly, without compromising quality of finish,” confirms Peter Stanley, Sales Representative for sole Salsco UK distributor CLS Selfdrive.

The most recent addition to Stuart’s range of ICL products is the H2Pro TriSmart wetting agent, but it was a decision that he did not take lightly.
“I used to use a different wetting agent and there was nothing really wrong with it except I felt it was perhaps just holding a bit of moisture in the top. The decision to change to TriSmart could have come back to bite me but Phil Collinson
(ICL’s North West Technical Area Sales Manager) had every confidence in it.”
Containing three water management technologies consisting of surfactant and polymer blends, TriSmart is renowned for providing great water penetration and an even water spread through the rootzone.
Stuart starts the programme at the end of February and applies TriSmart at a rate of 10L/ha every four to five weeks, depending on weather, until the end of July.
Last year, he applied TriSmart to all of the greens and surrounds, which equates to an area size of 4 hectares, but due to the successful results the areas for treatment is set to significantly increase.
Over the last couple of years working with Phil and ICL, it has helped make this decision easier. I have every confidence if I ever needed any help or support from ICL as a company, then it would be there which I believe is important.”

Otterbine fountain at the heart of Ladbrook Park
Sitwell Park Golf Club in Rotherham has taken delivery of a Ventrac 4500 compact tractor and two attachments from Russell Group’s Groundcare Division.
And the key reason for the purchase was its versatility according to
“We’re a parkland course situated in a valley with some severe undulations, so maintaining some of the slopes are an issue.
Previously we’ve used strimmers in these high maintenance areas, but with a small team it takes a lot of man-hours and anything we can do to reduce that drain on
“The Ventrac is certified to work on slopes up to 30 degrees and this has enabled us to get into areas that were previously not maintained. This will certainly help with the presentation of the course and I’ve already had positive comments from some of the members. When we were looking at the Ventrac, all of my team were part of the decisionmaking process. To a man, they were all impressed and then it was just about making a business case for the committee to agree.”

For the past 15 years, Otterbine’s Sunburst aerating fountain has created a stunning centrepiece to the heart of Ladbrook Park Golf Club in the midlands.
Three impressive interconnecting lakes make up the centre of Ladbrook Park and with 12,000m² of water in total, it’s paramount a high-quality aerating system is in place to keep the water clear and healthy.
And for 15 years, Otterbine’s Sunburst aerating fountain has been more than up to the task, says course manager, Kevin Fellows: “For 15 years, the Sunburst has given us everything we needed. When
we first excavated the lakes in conjunction with a local contractor, there was a transition period when we had a lot of weed and algae build up which was causing problems and fixing that as soon as possible was a real priority.”
To combat this, the club worked with a water management company who recommended the Otterbine Sunburst fountain.
With the Otterbine aerating fountain, thewaterisagoodenough quality to use for irrigation across the course and without having to relyonthemainswatersupply, the club has saved money and gained peaceofmindfromitsabilitytobe self-reliant, which “has been a real bonus”saysKevin.

Creating a premier football pitch takes a lot of teamwork
“A new fully automatic pitch irrigation system was installed and an imported rootzone laid to re-establish the original pitch levels. Premier Pitches completed the preparation and seeding of the new pitch, which delivered the project a week ahead of the proposed programme. T he SISGRASS stitching was installed following grass establishment, a process that took 7 days”
deliveries all had to be scheduled to the second to ensure that the project ran smoothly. We have worked with MJ Abbott on our prestigious pitch construction projects for over five years now. Their efficient and meticulous way of approaching a product from design and planning to delivery is everything that our key clients want to see but it doesn’t stop there. The back-up and support and knowledge is second to none.”
improve the green footprint of the club, which has seen lots of improvements around the stadium. “We’re running the mowers purely on battery power which, more than just delivering cost savings, means we’re running on clean, green energy compared to petrol alternatives -battery power seems to be the way forward for the industry.”
Newcastle United’s stadium manager Eddie Rutherford, has hailed the new pitch at St James’ Park, as the best in his 16-years at the club. His team works closely with some of the groundscare industry’s biggest names to maintain the highest possible standards.
St James’ Park sits in the centre of Newcastle as a monument to football, with progress being made under Rafael Benitez after bouncing back from The Championship at the first time of asking in 2016/17.
The decision to install a new irrigation system and playing surface was taken at short notice and required swift planning and cohesive team work between MJ Abbott and Premier Pitches, with the result delighting Eddie and the club.
“We are extremely happy with the pitch, it’s played really well,” Eddie said. “It’s probably the best the pitch has been since I’ve been here, and I know it hasn’t gone through the winter period yet but at the same stage in the last 15years it hasn’t been any better.
“We did the job at very short notice. We decided to put the SIS Grass pitch in with only four weeks’ notice, so considering the time they had to get everything organised and put in place I couldn’t fault them.
“My only worry was that when you put two companies together, will they work well together. But
they were both spot on throughout the project. When one is getting towards the end the other needs to be ready and mobilised and that worked really well, it couldn’t have worked any better.
“MJ Abbott come as a partnership with Premier Pitches when installing SIS Grass pitches. Premier Pitches have done a lot of work in the past with us and do our end of season renovations, but I know MJ Abbott are good contractor so I was quite happy to work with the two combined.”
Nathan George, Contracts Manager at MJ Abbott explained “The project comprised removing the existing fibre sand surface down to a suitable depth as to expose the existing drainage slits. This operation had to be very carefully completed as to not destroy the integrity of the retained drainage.”
The quick planning required for the project was helped by Premier Pitches’ experience at the city centre venue, and director, Russell Latham, commended the work of the design team in the build-up to the start date.
“The design team needs to work well together from the outset, especially on this project because of the time scale, but more importantly the men on the ground need to work in harmony from start to finish. Newcastle United have been a long-standing client of Premier Pitches so the pitfalls of working at a city centre Premier League stadium were well known. Nevertheless, without the rigorous planning and logistics from the outset things still could have gone wrong.

No compromise
With the high-quality playing surface complete, the grounds staff at St James Park look to maintain it to world class standards. The choice of kit they use is, therefore, an essential decision. In 2017 the club upgraded the fleet of stadium pitch mowers to include three 34” Cub Cadet INFINICUT® machines. Although renowned for their green credentials, it was ultimately the superior quality of cut that saw the mowers become the most recent additions to ‘The Magpies’.
“I’d heard and read a lot about the Cub Cadet INFINICUT ® mowers in the trade magazines so got in touch with Vinny Tarbox for a demonstration, and straight from the off we weren’t disappointed” explains Eddie.
Over the last five years, Eddie has been driving a campaign to
In addition to putting a big tick in the ‘environmentally friendly’ box, the quality of cut produced sealed the deal. “It was important for us to invest in machines that deliver the best and with the Cub Cadet INFINICUT® the cut you get is second to none.”
The unique design and its adaptability to perform on any grass surface makes the INFINICUT ® the most technologically advanced mower available to turf managers in the last 40 years.

Final word from Eddie: “Compared to the results we were getting from the previous mowers, the guys have noticed an increase in the quality of cut and finish by at least 25%. What makes for a good fertiliser?
it may or may not state what proportion of the nitrogen, for example, exists in that form.
It is possible for turf to be grown without the addition of mineral fertilisers – but not to today’s exacting standards required of professional sport. Andy Russell, Sales & Marketing Director at Headland Amenity, explains:
Where demands for quality are low, natural sources of nitrogen from organic matter and microbes in the soil, as well as nitrogen from the atmosphere, may be sufficient to maintain growth. Specialised, hybrid grass varieties developed for sportsturf however, demand a more specific nutritional approach to fulfil their full potential and create a ‘quality’ sward.
Using a fertiliser is a way of supplying one or more nutrients essential to the growth of plants. Efficient, well thoughtout fertiliser practices help to produce a strong, healthy grass plant, better able to withstand the rigorous demands of yearround sport.
However, significant over or under application, poor application techniques and applying in adverse climatic conditions can all have a negative impact on turf quality. Understanding more about the make-up of fertilisers, what they contain and how they react in the soil, can help to make sure that the eventual result is the one you want.
It’s not that there are actually too many ‘bad’ fertilisers! After all, they are primarily just a vehicle to deliver nitrogen, phosphorus,
potassium, and sometimes other nutrients, essential for plant growth.
Unfortunately, some nutrient sources are cheaper than others and this sometimes leads to products formulated to provide only a colour response, rather than to contribute to a wider set of desired benefits such as consistent growth, presentation and overall plant health. To get the best out of a given material, it is important to understand how it will work and what response can be expected under a given set of conditions.
The first place to look for such information is your supplier. Anyone selling fertilisers should be able to explain the make-up of their product. What are the sources of nitrogen? Ammonium and nitrate nitrogen will provide an almost immediate response, even in cool temperatures, whilst urea or perhaps sources of organic nitrogen will require warmer soil conditions before they are able to have an effect.
Where does the potassium come from? Maybe it is supplied as potassium chloride – a costefficient popular source with a relatively high salt index (burn potential) or maybe it exists as a slow-release organic material.
Hopefully, your supplier can use the information on the fertiliser label to explain the ‘ingredients’ and their role in achieving the desired results. With slow or controlled release products,
Vital maintenance with Vitax
This is of course extremely important information as it will have a huge bearing on the expected performance of the product. You would expect a fertiliser with 75% of its nitrogen in a stated controlled release form (CRF) to work for much longer than an equivalent product with only 40% controlled release nitrogen. You might also expect the second product to be significantly less expensive than the first, as the CRF portion is likely to be the most costly element of the fertiliser to produce.
The physical characteristics of a fertiliser are important considerations when it comes to uniformity of application and response, how easy or difficult granular products are to spread or how tank-mixable liquids are with other desired partner products.
Fertilisers containing unmatched granule sizing’s are not evenly distributed by rotary spreaders because the larger, heavier particles are thrown further from the spreader than smaller, lighter particles. Another factor here is the density of granules. Light granules are not thrown far by pedestrian rotary spreaders meaning that a greater number of passes are required to achieve the desired outcome.
Many fertiliser companies put their liquid formulations through extensive testing to confirm that they are compatible with other complimentary products in a tank-mix solution.
This not only gives peace of mind that the proposed applications will not damage turf, but also will
not result in costly and timeconsuming cleaning of spray equipment following blocked nozzles and filters where incompatible products have been used.
Soluble fertilisers are dry formulations that can be dissolved in water and sprayed out as a liquid. Good quality solubles will not contain impurities that can block filters and will dissolve rapidly in the spray-tank as long as enough water is available.
Cost, or rather value-for-money, is a key aspect of fertiliser selection but is difficult to evaluate without the types of information above. It is easy to understand that a 20kg bag of fertiliser contains 20% less product than an equivalent 25kg bagand,like-for-like,willnotbe good value if they cost the same.
The least cost-effective fertiliser is the one that does not perform in the way you expect or for as long as promised, so it pays to understand the different technologies involved and their strengths and weaknesses.

Rigby Taylor’s cold start fertiliser kick starts seasons
Rigby Taylor has introduced Cold Start Boost-R 11-5-5 +8 Fe + O.8 MgO as a true cold start fertiliser that provides turf with nitrogen in cold conditions, in conjunction with a rapid colour boost.
Effective at temperatures of 5 degrees C, Cold Start Boost-R will prepare the plant for the spring, greatly improve early season colour and assist in combating turf disease attack while enabling grounds staff to produce playing surfaces that continue to meet expectations.
With a nitrate and high iron content, as well as magnesium for increased colour, Cold Start Boost-R also includes zeolite to reduce leaching and improve cation exchange capacity
Nitrogen: an application of a fertiliser containing sulphate
of ammonia, urea and nitrate in temperatures of 5 degrees C, will enable the nitrate to provide the plant with a quick ‘kick’, while waiting for the sulphate of ammonia to become available.
Iron provides an almost instant visual response and will assist in the hardening of the plant foliage as a defence against early season disease pressure. This also helps reduce surface scarring.
There are three-fold benefits of the use of magnesium compared to formulations containing just nitrate and iron.
Magnesium allows the plant takes to up nitrate when it is photosynthesising, even at cold temperatures, naturally provides colour and increases the plant’s ability to utilise iron.
Rigby Taylor
Conditions for turf growth are improving rapidly now, but playing pressure is also increasing.
Vital maintenance aims to maintain current turf integrity, begin recovery from winter damage and start the constructive spring programme.
The turf is now into growth mode, fertiliser is needed to support this and maintain health. Enhance 15+2+8+MgO+TE from Vitax will provide immediate and slow release organic nutrients and aid microbial activity providing the ideal conditions for ryegrass swards.
Maintain turf health with an application of SwardPhite on a twice monthly basis.
Towards the end of March apply the first VitaSil to harden blades and encourage upright growth for a clean cut, and regulate water within the turf as transpiration increases.
Further application of Seaturf or VitaKelp will aid enzyme activity in the turf and boost micro-organism activity in the organic layer helping to reduce debris build up.

The Groundsman - Enhance
Heavy usage on the sports pitches at the Trojan Club in Eastleigh, Hampshire, means that head groundsman Dave Edwards needs to ensure the turf stands up to the rigours of winter sports. It is for this reason he chooses Sherriff Amenity’s Marathon Sport extended release fertilisers.
The Trojan Sports Club is a community-based amateur sports club which is run by the members, for the members and is open to all.
The club receives no ongoing support from local or national sports authorities, and is totally reliant on member subscriptions, bar takings and fund-raising for its continued survival; and in a true case of Trojan by name, Trojan by nature - survive it certainly does.
Trojan is one of the largest amateur sports clubs in Hampshire and has a long history of playing sport at a high level including rugby, hockey, squash, cricket and football. Tasked with ensuring the quality and safety of the sports pitches is Dave Edwards, who aside from the help of volunteers two days a week, tends to the large site alone.
It was in his previous employment that he first became acquainted with Sherriff Amenity’s Marathon Sport extended release fertilisers.
“I had previous experience of using the Marathon range and
especially when I was at the football grounds - I didn’t really use anything else. I thought they were good slow release products which lasted an incredibly long time. In my opinion there are a lot of slow release products out there which are hit and miss and it can be a bit of a lottery but I was impressed with the Marathon range. In summer, the pitches used to really kick on when using them for the end of season renovations, so when I started here I thought it made sense to start using them again.”
The Marathon range is characterised by a balance of nutrients, the analyses of each product being geared to a specifi c growth stage or season. With fi ve existingproductsintheMarathon Sport range - Autumn, Pre-Seed, Spring, Summer, Lawn Mini Pack– there truly is a solution for every requirement, no matter what the time of year.
Across the four rugby pitches, Dave’s maintenance programme seeshimstarttheseasonwiththe Summer mixture 10.0.15, which he applies at 35g/m2 before turning to the Marathon Sport Autumn 7.0.21 to ensure good grass coverage over winter.

ICL launch two new SierrablenPlus analyses
ICL has announced the launch of two new additions to its leading range of SierrablenPlus fertilizers. The new products – “Renovator” 11-11-5 + 4CaO + 8MgO and “Turf Starter” 5-28-0 + 16MgO both contain Pearl Technology, which has been proven to greatly enhance root development.
The mini-granular range of SierrablenPlus fertilizers have for many years been a popular choice for those looking to achieve even coverage at low rates for their sports or amenity turf. This is due to the micro-granular formulation containing Poly-S and resincoated PACE technology with conventional nitrogen sources to provide the best long-term nutrient release patterns.
Depending on the requirement, there are a wide range of solutions in the SierrablenPlus range to supporting healthy turf growth though the season. The latest products to be added to the portfolio, “Renovator” and “Turf Starter”, have been specifically added because of their ability to greatly enhance root development due to the inclusion of Pearl® Technology.
Pearl ® Technology blends a unique, recycled, slow-release phosphorus into these 2 new analysesto provide significantly increased rooting and more efficient nutrient use over traditional phosphorus sources.
As with all ICL products, both the “Renovator” and “Turf Starter” have been rigorously tested through independent trials. Data has revealed significantly increased rooting when SierrablenPlus with Pearl® Technology is used as part of a seedbed preparation and during turf-laying. Furthermore, there was a 2.5 x increase in rooting when compared to another existing high-performing product.
Key features include: controlled-release Poly-S nitrogen with 3+ month longevity for strong turf response; root-activated Pearl Technology, slow-release phosphorus for increased rooting; contains Polyhalite with K, CaO and MgO; includes recycled nutrients N, P and MgO; and earlier harvest time demonstrated when used for turf production. Germinal has launched an organic based phased-release fertiliser which provides up to five months’ worth of nutrients and trace elements from a single application at a budget-friendly price point.
GSR Tri-Phase is an 18-3.5-8 NPK fertiliser which also supplies one unit of MgO plus trace elements including copper, zinc, boron, manganese and molybdenum.
Recommended for use on all fine grass swards including golf greens, tees and fairways, sports pitches and all amenity areas, GSR Tri-Phase’s mini-granular
(1-2mm) formulation delivers a cost-effective and consistent supply of nitrogen and potash over a period of 16-20 weeks.
Richard Brown, Germinal Amenity Sales Manager explains: “We recognise that, for many landscapers, local authorities and golf, rugby and football clubs, grass and groundcare budgets can be very tight.
“We have therefore developed our own phased-release fertiliser which is as good as anything else on the market but at a more affordable price. It can be used either as a base feed as part of
a wider fertiliser programme, or, where budgets are severely restricted, as a standalone, single application product.”
GSR Tri-Phase contains three forms of nitrogen to provide three phases of nutrient release into the rootzone: an initial hit of quick release nitrogen gives way to methylene urea which is subsequently followed by a final release of organic based nitrogen.
In addition, potash is also released slowly throughout the growing season to regulate water uptake and to ensure nutrients and trace elements

Cabrio tops the ryegrass fineness of leaf ratings for a third year
Cabrio Ultra Fine Ryegrass has, for the third consecutive year, been announced as the number one variety for fineness of leaf in the BSPB’s Series L Table 1 for perennial ryegrasses.
Formally introduced as a new cultivar in 2016, Cabrio Ultra Fine Ryegrass went straight to the top of the BSPB’s Table L1 for 2017 thanks to a fineness of leaf scoring of 8.8 It retained this position in 2018 thanks to another score of 8.8, and enjoys the same position in 2019’s list thanks to a rating of 8.7 –a score which is still half a point clear of its nearest rivals at 8.2.
“Cabrio continues to impress with its exceptional and consistent fineness of leaf score,” explains Richard Brown, Germinal Amenity Sales Manager.
“Cabrio also benefits from good all round scores for shoot density (7.8), visual merit
(7.9), slow regrowth habit (7.2) and cleanness of cut (7.1) and therefore offers groundsmen, greenkeepers and turf growers an excellent opportunity to produce an exceptionally fine-leaved, hard wearing sward that can not only tolerate a close mowing regime, but which will also give good ball roll or bounce and will be very attractive aesthetically.”
Cabrio is recommended for use on golf tees and golf green aprons as well as tennis courts and cricket squares where it is ideal for repairing baselines and wicket ends. Cabrio is exclusively available from Germinal in the company’s A5 Cricket, Tennis and Tees, A10 Golf Tees and Divot Repairs, and A28 Ultrafine Ryegolf mixtures. Its inclusion in all three of these mixtures enhances sward density, wear tolerance and repair capability.

Richard says that his non-stop use of products from Rigby Taylor will ensure the sward “is always strong as we move towards another new season”.
With a background in farming before entering racecourse groundsmanship as a full-time job in 1996 at Wolverhampton Racecourse - followed by a period at Kempton Park before joining Brighton in 2010 - Richard reflects that his transition from agriculture to race track maintenance wasn’t daunting: “With my experience at growing crops such as sugar beet, potatoes, wheat and barley, I found growing grass a very similar regime - even though Wolverhampton is now an all-
weather track, I was lucky enough to maintain the turf for the last few National Hunt races staged there.”
Upon his move to the south coast, to a 1.5 mile ‘horse shoe’ track that sits on the edge of the South Downs and 400 feet above sea level, Richard’s experience with Rigby Taylor’s range of sports turf products at Kempton Park was immediately applied at Brighton, where he and a team of three grounds staff maintain the base sward of meadow and downland grass.

A succesful switch to J Premier Wicket gets Durham set for World Cup
This year promises to be a big one for cricket, as England and Wales host the ICC World Cup, with preparations at grounds up and down the country already well under way.
Vic Demain and the team at Durham CCC kickstarted their groundworks with a switch to Johnsons Sports Seed J Premier Wicket mixture for their autumn renovations. As the start of the new season approaches, the strong germination achieved over winter leaves Vic confident of delivering camera-ready surfaces.
The Emirates Riverside ground will be the home to three games in the space of five days, a full-on
schedule when you factor in 20 days of practice matches, together with Durham’s regular fixtures.
“With the cricket season extending at both ends, we are constantly reviewing the products and techniques we’re using to try and upgrade the playing facilities we offer and deliver these results in an ever-decreasing timeframe” explains Vic.
“I had decided that I was going to look for an alternative seed mixture and having worked previously with Craig Spooner, gave DLF a call. I have a few friends in the first-class game that use Johnsons Sports Seed and have achieved fantastic results with it,
so the choice to give it a try ended up being relatively simple.”
Knowing Johnsons to be a market leader, and the J Premier Wicket mixture to deliver rapid establishment and recovery, Vic saw the switch as less of a risk and more of an opportunity.
“I certainly wouldn’t have switched to a product I had any doubt in, not with a huge season ahead of us. I trusted Craig’s advice and had faith that the seed would perform even under the challenging Northern Climate – and I haven’t been disappointed with the results.”
Vic applied J Premier Wicket at the beginning of October, and
despite the seasons late finish, achieved fantastic germination on both the wicket and outfields.
“We’ve come through the winter with strong, consistent coverage and look forward to the busy season ahead knowing we’ve had a top-quality start.”
Johnsons J Premier Wicket contains 4 top rated cultivars to deliver rapid establishment, high disease resistance and classleading wear tolerance under close mown conditions. A new formulation for 2019, J Premier Wicket can also be specified with DLF’s ProNitro seed coating.

Barenbrug introduces the new #1 winter sports blend
Elite Sport from Barenbrug is the new number one rated Winter Sports blend. The topperforming product blends perennial ryegrasses for the renovation and construction of winter sports pitches.
Cultivar trials at the Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI) under the British Society of Plant Breeders (BSPB) protocol analyse the performance of sports perennial ryegrasses under intensive wear pressure in line with a winter sports season.
The trial plots are sown in spring, and a “wear simulation machine” is applied from autumn through to the following spring.
Individual cultivars are replicated three times and scored for traits such as Visual Merit; Live Ground Cover; Shoot Density and Recovery;
each scored on a scale of 1-9 (9 is highest).
A ryegrass cultivar must be subjected to three successive wear trials (sports seasons) to be listed in Table S1 of the annual publication “Turfgrass Seed” (aka “the STRI/BSPB booklet”).
Table S1 represents a ranking of Mean scores (the combined average of Visual Merit and Live Ground Cover) of approximately 100 perennial ryegrass varieties.
Elite Sport features four of the top-six cultivars in the S1 table and contains 40% by composition of the new #1-ranked Europitch (Mean = 8.1). Overall, the product blend has an outstanding Mean score of 7.92. This score translates into Elite Sport being the industry-leading performing product for winter sports use in the UK.
Fast and efficient seeding
The GKB Combiseeder offers a fast, efficient way of seeding and surface aerating with virtually no surface disturbance.
Creating over 1500 holes per m² the Combiseeder provides accurate seed application at various rates to suit different seed mixes, with drag brushes to incorporate seed and topdressing.
The Combiseeder can be used for overseeding and initial seeding and features two spiked rollers that open up the
soil for the seed to then be spread accurately across the full width, in and around the holes. Two drag brushes incorporate the seed into
In addition to performance underwear, the blend has other traits of interest to grounds managers of elite winter sports surfaces. Barcristalla (25% of the mix) is ranked #1 in the top-60 listed varieties for dark green colour and has exceptional Drechslera leaf spot and Fusarium (Microdochium) tolerance (source: turfgrass-list.org).
These two factors are particularly important to stadium environments under intensive disease pressure and the scrutiny of high-definition TV cameras. Three of the four varieties have also been put their paces at Barenbrug’s dedicated UK research station, Cropvale, in Worcestershire. Here, wear simulation is monitored using Digital Image Analysis (DIA) to objectively analyse performance.

Six-year sward conversion programme at Sheringham GC thanks to Redexim seeders
Norfolk’s Sheringham Golf Club has called on a duo of seeders from Charterhouse Turf Machinery to help their aim of achieving ‘continuous development’.
With advice from course consultant Gordon Irvine, the club has undergone a transformation in recent years, one of the biggest changes is the push towards increasing Fescue cultivars into the greens and fairways. Head Greenkeeper, David Childs, has been at Sheringham for 23 years and is supported by a team of 6 greenkeepers.
“Our sward conversion programme has been in place for three full seasons and was kickstarted alongside investment in new machinery” he explains. “We went for the Redexim Verti-Seed
804 for the greens as we were impressed with the gear system which meant we could easily and accurately control the amount of seed the machine was putting out. For fairways, we chose the larger Redexim Overseeder 1275.”
The current regime involves a double pass on the greens, in August and October. “The VertiSeed is a really simple machine to set-up and leaves a nice smooth finish, which is key for the work on the greens. Because the seed is delivered straight down into the soil profile, we’ve been achieving fantastic uptake, even in the drier conditions. Following the work, the surfaces look great again in as little as a week which, as September is a very busy time for us, is important.”
Two passes are also conducted with the Overseeder on the fairways, however, this tends to be later in the calendar, to capitalise on the increased moisture content therefore helping to maximise uptake.
“We estimate it’s going to be another three years or so on the current programme before we will then reassess. Increasing the fescue content will ultimately reduce our reliance on feeds and water, which will be positive for us. The Redexim machines are vital in achieving that outcome and to date, they’ve been producing the results we’ve been looking and hoping for.”

Terra Float Air delights customers
The Wiedenmann Terra Float & Terra Seed has been reengineered and relaunched with an added computerised pneumatic unit. Offering maximum accuracy at quantities as little as 1 g / m² the Terra Float Air, combines three units in one.
A base unit aerates or loosens soil to 30 mm using either spikes or fine slits assuring a receptive seed bed either pre or post top dressing. Next the distribution of the seed is absolutely uniform via
the air flow and deflector system. Finally, a brush and roller combination incorporates top dressing materials to the ground before smoothing the surface. With its very fine seed rollers exact calibration is achievable.
Those with expensive or ‘rare seed’ can be confident of success while memory function on the control pad stores input and calibration data for the next use.

As the years pass, every decorative lawn is subject to ageing. Grass dies and species disappear which causes a reduction in the density of growth. This gives opportunity for pests, weeds, moss etc. to take over the lawn. Scarifying and spraying can help to briefly interrupt the decline, but the only long term solution is to rejuvenate the grass. The key to success is overseeding The DZC 600 overseeder from Eliet makes high tech overseeding possible for an affordable price. INNOVATIVE OVERSEEDING TECHNOLOGY 1. CUTTING OPEN THE SOIL The cutting blades at the front of the machine cut open 10 (0.4”) to 15mm (0.6”) deep grooves in the soil of the lawn in preparation for the grass seed. 2. REMOVAL OF EXCESS SOIL T he blades rotate over the t op and cast the s oil in an arch t o the rear o f the machine so that it does not fall into the newly cut grooves. 3. PRECISION SOWING A clever and compact seed distribution system, Helix Seed DuctTM carries the seed under the projected excess soil into small funnels leading to discharge channels precisely located above the clean grooves. 4. INJECTION A small air pressure generator blows air through the seed funnels so the seed is blown while it is being distributed. This helps the seed to settle faster and with more precision in the grooves. 5. ROLLERS The powered rubber roller immediately follows the seed distribution process and ensures that there is good contact between the soil and the seeds by pressing the earth down. 6. COVERING THE SEED The flow of projected excess earth falls just behind the roller on the sown area. The earth covers the seedbed and provides a protective layer for the seed, increasing the chances of germination and growth. www.eliet.eu PSD GROUNDSCARE ltd | 01282 856819 | sales@psdgroundscare.com | www.psdgroundscare.com ELIET DZC 600 OVERSEEDER www.elietmachines.com ELIET DZC 600 OVERSEEDER PROFESSIONAL OVERSEEDING RESULTS AT AN AFFORDABLE PRICE www.eliet.eu NOW AVAILABLE WITH TUNGSTEN TIP BLADES

Appliance of science to mowing
Manufacturers of ride-on mowers are incorporating greater levels of technology into their designs to ease control and improve performance, reports Jane Carley.
An advanced control system on John Deere’s 2750
PrecisionCut and E-Cut hybrid triplex mowers, announced at BTME and available in 2020, is designed to optimise cut quality regardless of the driver’s skill levels, allowing managers to make more efficient use of their team.
The greens mowers feature the password-protected TechControl system which allows fleet managers and technicians to input operational commands.
This includes frequency of clip, turn speed, clean-up pass speed and how fast the
cutting units raise and lower, providing consistent end results on the course whoever is operating the mower.
Featured on the hydraulic model for the first time (and also available as standard on the hybrid unit), the frequency of clip can be programmed by altering parameters for mowing speed, reel speed and number of blades on the reel.
Once programmed, the settings cannot be changed by the operator and automatically adjust with ground speed, ensuring uniformity from machine to machine.
The operator can also engage clean-up pass mode to automatically reduce mowing speed on perimeter passes to increase accuracy, with less scalping or missed strips.
This setting allows the operator to focus on the task, rather than on manually feathering the speed.
Adjustable turn speed allows the course manager to control how fast the operator is able to turn, minimising the risk of turf damage.
In addition, by selecting Eco Mode, engine speed can be electronically controlled - in this mode, engine RPM is
automatically adjusted based on the load, which can save up to 30 per cent on fuel and reduce noise levels.
The 2750 PrecisionCut and E-Cut hybrid triplex mowers offer a 157cm mowing width at speeds of up to 9.7kph.
The three-axis lift system on the cutting units provides up to 18 degrees of steering and 42 degrees of contour following for an even cut, especially on clean-up passes and undulating terrain.
Technical developments A number of innovations have been introduced for Ferris mowers, importer TH White has announced.
On ISX800, IS2100Z and IS3200Z models a new two-belt
drive system offers enhanced reliability and productivity, with a 3-year limited belt warranty as standard.
The system includes steel arms which help to prevent the belt from dislodging from the castiron backside idler and deep grooved spindle drive pulleys for smoother engagement and less likelihood of the belt dislodging or rolling from the pulley.
Heavy duty Optibelt V-belts are engineered for superior resistance to stretching and premature wear with a profile that transmits more power than classic v-belt profiles.
Exclusive to Ferris mowers with Vanguard EFI engines, the Oil Guard system offers productivity gains by allowing
users to operate their mower for 500 hours between oil changes instead of 100 hours.
Oil Guard uses a larger volume of oil, halving contamination and features a large oil filter with fine filtration ability.
Consistent engine lubrication is provided during off-angle operation, up to 45 degrees and the engines come with a threeyear commercial engine warranty.
Ferris has also introduced a next generation, patented ForeFront suspension system, on the new ISX800.
This double wishbone technology incorporates four upper and lower control rods which ensure the front caster bearing remains vertical through the full range of travel, following the terrain precisely and resulting in a smoother ride and improved cut.

This allows faster mowing over rough terrain and gives increased comfort for operators, preventing fatigue and increasing productivity.
The mower benefits from reduced shocks to the chassis and better stability, reducing the need for servicing and repairs.
The latest SCAG ride-ons from STM offer a number of new features including the the Tiger Eye control panel.
A wider range of machine operating information is available immediately to hand via the digital display, with pre-programmed, therefore automatic, service requirement warnings and other alerts.
Hot weather in 2018 led to greater than normal dust ingress risk and the Tiger Eye includes an air filter monitor giving an early warning to prevent engine damage.
Continued improvement of the EFi systems on various engines
over the years has culminated in a system that can give same level of fuel efficiency on petrol engine SCAG mowers as diesels, leading to more effective horsepower levels on petrol engines and greater cutting power, points out STM.
Walker Mowers also points to the benefits of EFI engines –suggesting that using a commercial mower fitted with this type of engine can offer over £1,100 in fuel savings per year.
“In the late 1990s Kohler engines and Walker Mowers developed the first commercial mower using EFI technology,” explains Colin Gale.
“Today, this technology is available on five Walker models sold in the UK.”
EFI is the use of electronic controls to regulate the flow of fuel in a combustion engine, taking a number of factors into consideration, including temperatures and available oxygen levels.
A carburetted engine mixes air and fuel through tubes and valves, where an EFI engine injects the fuel directly into the engine.
Colin explains: “The benefits can be shown using a commercial mower with a carburetted engine and a fuel consumption of 1.35 gallons per hour where the machine is operated for 600 hours per year.”
“With fuel at £5.45 per gallon, this equates to £4,414 per year. Operating a mower with an EFI engine, the operator will spend just £3,302 - a saving of £1,112 per year.
“After five years this can amount to fuel savings alone of £5,560 per machine. Lower fuel usage on EFI engines also leads to cleaner machines and reduced fuel emissions, which benefits the environment.”
Gianni Ferrari is progressing with the introduction of electrically powered mowers, designed to work for 6-8 hours
between charges, at a cost of just two euros per day.
“The company exhibited electric mowers with grass collection ad mulching facilities alongside its conventionally powered range at recent trade fairs.
“Battery powered machinery is going to be the major trend of the coming years, and not just because of the need to curb
emissions,” says marketing manager Michele Capaldi.
“Electric machines virtually eliminate noise pollution, a big bonus in built-up areas.”
He also points to the low maintenance costs of electric motors compared with diesel or petrol engines.

All Husqvarna front-mount mowers use Husqvarna’s patented BioClip feature which repeatedly circulates leaves and clippings through the blades, cutting them into small pieces, before dropping onto the lawn. These cuttings pass through the grass, down to the soil, working as a natural fertiliser.
On the P 524EFi, a twocylinder Kawasaki EFi engine reduces fuel consumption and gives up todouble the cutting

A number of new machines are breaking cover for mowing in 2019. Ariens is adding a new zero turn mower to its range for this season.
The Zenith 60 is the largest zero-turn in the company’s range and features a high capacity 152cm cutter deck and ground speed of 14kph going forwards and 6.7kph in reverse, which combined with the ability to turn on the spot, is designed to significantly improve productivity.
The 10-gauge deck is designed with 14cm depth providing the optimal airflow needed
to tackle tough mowing conditions.
A constant belt tension system ensures the correct tension, minimising wear and heat while providing enhanced belt life with minimal adjustments.
Frame design is based on large tubular frame rails as a backbone to support the machine load, and the frame itself is fitted with a ROPS as standard.
The high back padded seat features armrests and integrated seat isolators to help absorb impacts on uneven surfaces.
Ergonomic controls include a foot operated deck lift system for raising the deck when travelling over paths and gravel areas, and there is a choice of 15 cutting positions in 0.6cm increments which can be simply adjusted using the vertical pin selector.
Power is supplied by a Kawasaki V-Twin 726cc engine. The Zenith comes with a two-year commercial warranty or threeyear residential warranty, and is available from the end of March.
Reesink Groundcare has
introduced a new hydraulicsfree greens mower designed to reduce noise, allowing greens in noise-sensitive areas to be cut early in the morning or during the day, which could enhance revenue by allowing earlier tee times, suggests the company.
The Toro Greensmaster eTriFlex is powered by a lithium-ion, alongside which is a Kawasaki twin cylinder 14hp air-cooled engine with a reduced speed of 2400rpm, shrouded in venting, reducing perceived bystander noise level dramatically.
Jeff Anguige, national sales manager at Reesink, says: “The eTriFlex is quiet, and with no hydraulics it delivers clean and leak-free cutting. It ticks the green credentials box with its all-electric components and brings an estimated 22% saving in fuel, in comparison to say the Greensmaster 3320, thanks to its efficient power supply.”
PSD Groundcare suggests that purchasers should consider flail mowers for maintaining areas traditionally cut with rotaries.

Next generation Cat mini excavators unveiled
More Volvos help TBS Hire expand its business
TBS Hire Ltd of Great Barton near Bury St Edmunds adds more Volvo compact excavators as it continues to expand its growing hire fleet.
Up until two years ago, long established TBS Plant Hire and builders’ merchants was in a sorry state of decline and general neglect.
But the company’s fortunes were about to change as husband and wife team, Trevor and Emma Jackson, took a leap of faith and bought the business in 2016 and set about its road to recovery.
Their initial Volvo compact excavator was an EC15D
which has since been joined by another 1.5-tonne excavator, a larger EC18D and most recently, two reduced swing ECR50Ds. These are now part of TBS’s growing fleet of mini excavators, rollers, dumpers and access equipment supported by a wide and comprehensive range of tool hire equipment.
All the Volvo compact excavators have been supplied by SMT GB’s utility dealer for Norfolk and Suffolk – Contractors Equipment Sales (CES).

Go green with the Liberty range from Allett
The key to the perfect striped lawn is a cylinder mower and for more than 50 years, cylinder lawnmowers from Allett have been creating quintessentially English lawns around the world. The key to this success has been Allett’s speciality in designing and manufacturing precision, single-cylinder, walk-behind powered mowers.
Until now, Allett’s mowers have traditionally been powered by petrol, with some products also available as electric models. Allett has now added lithiumion models to its range with its Liberty battery powered mowers, allowing gardeners to create the perfect striped finish without the need for the noise and fumes of petrol.
Professionally built and available in three different sizes 30cm, 35cm and 43cm , the Liberty mowers are built with quality and efficiency in mind. Designed to skilfully combine
modern lithium-ion technology, these self-propelled mowers are ideal for all small to mediumsized gardens and all feature a rear roller which creates those iconic stripes.
The Liberty 30 push mower is the entry level option for small to medium gardens. It generates little noise and gives users the freedom from trailing or being tethered to an electric cable, offering a greener, quieter alternative to help keep your lawn perfectly striped and in pristine condition.
Also well suited for small to medium gardens, but offering more features, is the mid-range Liberty 35. Powered by a 40V Lithium-Ion battery, the Liberty 35 is a 14″ self-propelled cylinder mower equipped with a five-bladed cutting cylinder.
The final mower is the Liberty 43 which is the top of the range model. With a self-propelled feature, steel front roller and double section rear roller with geared differential it gives the ultimate in cutting perfection.
To compliment this, it has a vast 62 litre grass box collection. Like the Liberty 35, it is also compatible with the Allett Lawn Care cartridges.

Plantworx and Railworx on track for the 2019 event
The Plantworx Construction Exhibition, hosted by the CEA (Construction Equipment Association) is just four months away.
The biennial working construction event is taking place at its brand-new home at the East of England Arena in Peterborough from 11-13 June 2019. New for 2019 is Railworx, which will give visitors the chance to see railway civil and systems engineering live and working.
The show will benefit from 20% more exhibition space than at its previous location in Leicestershire and exhibition space is selling fast!
To date the show has 332 confirmed exhibitors, which include 104 brand new companies making their show debut. The event is now over 80% sold and the ‘digging demo zone’ has just one plot remaining.
Exhibitors who will be demonstrating their earthmoving machines and ‘breaking-ground’ include a wide range of leading manufacturers such as, Marubeni Komatsu, Finning UK & Ireland with Caterpillar, JCB, LiuGong which will include Dressta machines, Takeuchi, Mecalac Construction Equipment, Hyundai, Avant Techno, TDL
Equipment, new comers J Mac, with the Sunward range of excavators and many more.
Equipment distributors Molson Group have also has secured a large demo plot and will be showing a range of machines in action including Kobelco machinery. Plant hire company Morris Leslie Plant Hire will also be demonstrating.
With the increasing demand for tiltrotators on jobsites key manufacturers have also reserved demo plots to show visitors the full capabilities of these attachments. Confirmed exhibitors are Engcon, Steelwrist and Rototilt. Excavator and bucket manufacturer Digbits is also in the digging zone alongside Auger Torque.
Operators, presenting the correct qualifications and PPE, will be invited to test the machines in the demo zone. The show will also have a no-dig zone – where exhibitors will be demonstrating but not ‘breaking-ground’. Exhibitors confirmed in this zone include Altrad Belle, Bomag, Thwaites, Wacker Neuson, Thwaites Dumpers and Worsley Plant.
Visitors can also expect to see static displays of machinery from SMT, Merlo, Ausa, machine safety system manufacturer, GKD Technologies, Merlo, Manitou, the very latest in engine technology from Perkins, Brokk UK and MTS

Alongside key exhibitors, Network Rail will have a dedicated ‘InnovationWorx’ area showing the latest developments by the Signalling Innovation Group and in the fields of electrification and telecommunications.
Visitors to Railworx will also see live demonstrations of machinery and plant used for railway civil engineering, including piling, reinforcing, drainage, access, lifting, surveying and monitoring.
The new East of England arena venue has the added benefit of a
Bobcat to launch electric mini-excavator
At Bauma 2019, Bobcat is launching the new E10e Electric Mini-Excavator, the industry’s first commercially available fully electric, zero tail swing (ZTS) miniexcavator in the one tonne class.
With no emissions, a low noise operation and a width of just 72cm, the new E10e can easily
pass through standard doors and in and out of lifts, making it ideal for indoor applications such as demolition and basement construction. In addition, by coupling the E10e to an optional external Bobcat super-charger while operators are on normal work breaks, the E10e can operate for a full 8 hour working day.
At the last Bauma exhibition in 2016, Bobcat attracted great interest from visitors with the prototype of the E10e. Being one of the pioneers in this area with the E10e, Bobcat has helped to inspire the increasing focus on electric construction machines including excavators and, in the last few years, the
industry has clearly started to move in this direction.
The reasons are obvious: not only to meet customers’ preference to be environmentally friendly, but there is a clear and dedicated business need for zero emission and low noise excavators for some specific applications. As well as
indoor demolition and basement projects, these include city centre developments, night-time work and contracts in low noise areas such as hospitals, cemeteries, schools and so on. The electric solution solves many of the issues associated with these tasks.
purpose-built indoor arena and space is running out quickly. It’s here visitors will find exhibitors with products and services that keep plant on the move and a range of companies offering fleet management systems.
The ‘Partners Pavilion’ will also feature in the indoor arena which is made up of overseas exhibition companies including Bauma Africa, India and China.
Conexpo will also take a stand alongside BICES and Intermat. Other exhibitors include CITS (Combined Industry Theft Solutions and DIT (Department for International Trade).
The indoor arena is also home to the Plantworx and Plantforce Rentals state-of-the-art simulation zone. Plantworx

New H2Pro SaltSmart launched by ICL
ICL has announced the launch of an exciting new addition to its leading range of H2Pro wetting agents – H2Pro “SaltSmart”.
Utilising advanced polymer and surfactant technology, the H2Pro range of specialist wetting agents have been carefully formulated and tested to help turf managers achieve maximum control of their moisture management.
The existing H2Pro’s DewSmart, TriSmart, FlowSmart and AquaSmart have been designed to achieve specific goals, each with a different blend of surfactants.
The four products have been widely commended for offering a number of solutions such as; preventative and curative action against Dry Patch, providing a drier surface in wet conditions and significantly reducing irrigation requirements.
H2Pro SaltSmart is the latest addition to the H2Pro range and is set to provide turf managers
with an even wider range of options for their moisture management strategies.
A unique blend of penetrant surfactant with Calcium macropolymer, H2Pro SaltSmart has been designed to move water and exchange cations thus reducing the impact of salt on turf.
This specialist product works by allowing water to penetrate and dissolve and flush salts below the rooting level or out into the drainage system.
The build-up of salt levels in rootzones can be problematic in sports turf and H2Pro SaltSmart will be a welcome addition for venues such as links courses which may be situated close to the sea or for those who encounter high evaporation and low rainfall.
The product could also be extremely
beneficial for low CEC sandbased rootzones that have limited buffering against salt influx and for turf managers who have poor quality groundwater for irrigation ICL
RDS innovations make it even more flexible
Two new innovations have made the premier rapid-deploy perimeter protection system even quicker to install. Steel fencing manufacturer Zaun Limited has designed a new QuickFit post system for its multi award-winning Rapid Deployment System (RDS), that was first created for political conferences and forms part of the National Barrier Asset.
And they have pre-assembled a ‘plug & play’ variant of perimeter intrusion detection experts Harper Chalice’s FenceSecure to offer a speedily-installed temporary HVM and detection fencing system. RDS has been the firm favourite with police for securing party conferences since
it saved up to 90% of police time and proved its rapid-install-withhigh-security credentials during a whistle-stop tour from Brighton to Birmingham via Manchester for the three main UK political parties’ autumn conferences in 2012 and at the G8 summit in Northern Ireland in May 2013.
The new QuickFit post system halves the manpower for installation, with a team of two able to install a 30m run in just half an hour in trials. Opposing wedgeshape protrusions on the posts and clamp bar serve as a pincer system to clamp the fence panels to the posts. They are locked in place with a single bolt fixing
per post with the head of the bolt completely encapsulated inside a tube so it cannot be removed.
Zaun’s research and development team has created a video to demonstrate the innovation.
After the Labour autumn conference in 2012, Inspector Steve Worth, Specialist Operations Branch, Conference Planning Unit, Greater Manchester Police, said: “RDS is now firmly the preferred product for the delivery of security operations for party political conferences we police, fully supported by The Home Office.”
