BALI and TPA announce new partnership for parks and green spaces
As we move into 2020 environmental issues, including the future of our parks and green spaces, remains firmly on the political agenda reflecting their contribution to health and wellbeing, tackling climate change and bringing communities together. But both organisations know further work is needed to ensure investment flows into these important assets at the local level.
The Parks Alliance and British Association of Landscape Industries have announced a new partnership.
BALI is the UK’s leading trade association that represents all landscape professionals, from design, build and maintenance through to supply, training and education with landscape professionals based in all four nations of the UK.
BALI aims to maintain and improve the standing of the landscape industry by providing its members with a strong collective voice and raise a greater awareness of the landscape industry’s role in the creation of an improved environment.
BALI shares TPA’s mission to promote and protect the public parks we are proud to have at the heart of UK life and culture.
New Gator is the most comfortable ever
John Deere’s new premium XUV 865R Gator is the most comfortable model ever produced in the company’s popular crossover utility vehicle range.
This 23hp diesel-powered model combines the established high performance of the XUV 865M with a wide range of additional operator friendly features, including a luxurious cab environment.
Standard specification includes a continuously variable transmission with on-demand four-wheel drive, power steering, fully independent suspension and an attachmentready electrical system.
when driving off-road, as well as easy-opening door handles, a fully opening windscreen and a proven, extremely efficient heating, ventilation and air conditioning system.
In addition, the cab features an attractive tan-coloured interior that has been ergonomically redesigned, with the easy-to-use automotive-style controls now conveniently located in the centre of the dash. The streamlined roof moves water to the outside edges, and both the high-level front and rear lights are set below the roof line for better protection.
To complement the robust frame,
TPA Chair Matthew Bradbury said: “We are very excited to have BALI on board. They have been a strong advocate for TPA over the last few years and share a commitment to our values and mission.
“As a trade body they have a very strong commitment to highlighting the industry’s role in protecting and improving the natural environment – a natural environment that is so important to the wellbeing of people and places across the UK.”
The new government has said it aims to level up the UK economy, boosting regional economic growth in the midlands and north, by investing £100 billion in infrastructure to improve the well-being of people living in poorer areas and narrow the productivity gap between England’s regions.
But the TPA is campaigning to ensure that infrastructure is not just about the roads, rails and waterways that
connect our towns and cities. It wants greater recognition of the public realm in towns and cities that enables them to function, that makes them good places to live, work and do business.
Importantly it’s about the essential civic infrastructure in these places – the public spaces like parks that make these places attractive to people and provide the social spaces that enable communities to function.
“Our members are hard at work creating, maintaining and improving parks and green spaces every day and realise how important they are to local communities and the wider environment,” he added.
“BALI shares TPA’s mission to promote and protect parks and the importance of continued investment into these vital natural assets. We look forward to working closely with TPA on these issues.”

BALI Chief Executive Wayne Grills said the organisation was happy to support TPA.
Taking a proactive approach is second nature to our industry – prevention is always seen as the best option and tackling a potential problem before it starts to have a negative impact is something we are all used to doing. It is heartening to see this approach being transferred to the wider issues the industry is facing. The new BALI-Parks Alliance partnership, aimed at further strengthening the importance of parks and green spaces throughout the UK – is a great example of two progressive organisations coming together to embark on something positive. The partnership, along with the work already being done by these two and other organisations and groups, will ensure parks remain in the political spotlight. And although Sport England’s grant announcement for those sports and community groups hit by recent flooding is reactive, it is refreshing to see how quickly it moved to provide much-needed support to get these vital facilities back into use. Throughout this issue we have plenty of other examples of this proactive approach, not least in the plethora of new product and service launches from manufacturers and companies across the industry.

HS2 will shoot poison arrow through heart of the environment
HS2 will shoot a poisoned arrow through the heart of our ancient woods and their wildlife, the Woodland Trust has said.
The Trust, which made a 16page submission to the Oakervee Review including thousands of comments from supporters, says today’s announcement shows its expert opinion, that of other NGOs and the concerns of the public worried about the destruction of the irreplaceable habitat has been utterly disregarded.
More than 46,000 people added their voice to the Trust’s campaign calling for ancient woodland to be spared. Review deputy Lord Berkeley published an independent dissenting report into the review earlier this month which said the environment had not been properly taken into account.
Some 61 ancient woods along the HS2 route are earmarked for total or partial destruction while a further 47 will suffer damage from noise, vibration, light and pollution.
Adam Cormack, head of campaigning at the Woodland Trust, said: “HS2 will shoot a poisoned arrow through the heart of our ancient woods and their wildlife, becoming a permanent reminder of backward environmental thinking.
“Future generations won’t forget the disregard shown for the environmental costs of HS2, especially at a time when recognition has never been greater of the need to protect the environment in the face of the climate and nature emergency.
“The Government is riding roughshod over its own
environmental ambitions and ignoring lessons learned from the past, by allowing destruction of ancient woodland and other important habitats on this scale.
“Right now ancient woodlands in the line of HS2 are about to burst into life. Bluebells are emerging and birds are
starting to build nests. It’s now too close to spring to be doing preparatory work for HS2 in these woodlands, which needs to wait until much later in the year to comply with guidance. It is unclear how HS2 are proposing to handle this.”
Across the country over 22,000 large trees and 28,000 small trees will be planted in urban areas, from Thanet to Middlesbrough, and Merseyside to Bristol. These will help areas improve health and wellbeing, as well as playing a crucial role in the fight against climate change, supporting the UK’s journey to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
The Government is committed to plant 30,000 hectares of trees a year, across the UK, by 2025, and the fund is helping increase canopy cover in and around our towns and cities where they bring a wide range of benefits.
Launched in May 2019, the £10 million scheme will see 130,000 trees planted across England’s towns and cities by 2021.
Environment Secretary Theresa Villiers, said: “Trees are vital in the fight against climate change, to tackle air pollution and help us achieve our net-zero target by 2050. But for local communities they are so much more. They allow green spaces to come together, help both physical and mental wellbeing, and connect children and young people with nature.
Chair of the Forestry Commission, Sir Harry Studholme said: “It is such great news that the first year of the Urban Tree Challenge Fund has been so successful and able to reach so many places.
“The fund focuses on areas of high deprivation and low tree canopy cover where every tree planted has the change to provide the greatest impact.
“Not only do trees in urban areas help to improve wellbeing but they also offer benefits in many other ways like helping tackle climate change and mitigating flood risks.
“I look forward to seeing the second year of the fund reopening for smaller scale planting later this year.”
Successful projects in the first round include: the Trees for Cities project which will receive support for over 9,000 trees to be distributed across the country; and over 8,000 trees will be planted by Slough Borough Council, almost 7,000 large trees will go to London Street Trees and 6,000 trees to The Mersey Forest.

New Simply Play to be a great asset for play developments
Simply Play, the freely available assessment tool, has just gone through a redevelopment process to increase functionality and usability, and is now available for all to use via the new web portal.
Accessed via www.timberplay. com/simply-play/ the new Simply Play has been streamlined with a reduced number of questions, and the performance online has been enhanced so that it can be used more effectively on hand held devices.
Simply Play was created as part of a Knowledge Transfer Partnership between Sheffield Hallam University and Timberplay.
This project combined the knowledge base of these two organisations in order to create a tool to benefit all individuals involved in the development of play spaces, maximising play value, regardless of their own knowledge or experience.
Easy to understand and simple to complete, the survey enables assessors to analyse several factors in any given space (for example challenge, movement and social provision), providing supplementary and supportive information where necessary. The completed results are then emailed to the assessor in the form of an easy-to-understand infographic.
Beth Cooper, developer of this essential tool and Creative Play Associate at Timberplay, comments: “The original Simply Play tool was the result of many months of research and analysis into leading play theories, distilling this information into several broad themes and 45 questions.
“Feedback from users prompted us to review and refine this – and the result is the new Simply Play. We are delighted to still be able to offer this as a free-to-use tool and hope it will support all in the creation of better play areas.”
The designs are infused with quintessentially British themes which have, in turn, influenced each garden’s styles and

‘Future Flora’ aims to transform the plant supply chain
Policy makers often talk about the importance of getting the right plant for the right place. But at the moment, it’s almost impossible to know what the right plant is.
Our changing climate is a big factor – but researchers have also found that almost all the information we have about plants is either contradictory or out of date. Worse still, much of the information available to
The National Association of Tree Officers the landscape sectors doesn’t fit seamlessly with digital workflows, undermining our efficiency.
To address these challenges, Future Flora will create new, BIM-compatible data that uses the latest techniques to predict exactly when and why a plant is likely to fail.
This increased confidence in plant selection could deliver a step change in the ability
of nurseries, landscape contractors, designers and managers to support national policy goals.
Funded by Defra, Future Flora is currently in a public consultation phase, and the researchers are inviting everyone in the landscape sectors to take part in a brief survey.
Harry Watkins, researcher and Chair of the LI Biosecurity
Working Group, said: “Whether you are in a consultancy, conservation group or a public sector organisation, your views will make a big difference in shaping how we create and implement Future Flora – so please share this survey with your colleagues, clients and suppliers. A cross-sector change starts here.”
The new Simply Play survey has honed the themes and questions, now taking in 32 questions across 8 themes.
The results infographic will serve as an excellent reference point from which to identify areas of the play space in need of improvement.

Concerns raised over Government’s new immigration policy
system will have a significant impact on our sector. Availability of both skilled and unskilled labour is already limiting the growth of ornamental horticultural businesses.
Cricket World Groundcare Awards 2020 launched
The Cricket World Groundcare Awards 2020 have been officially launched at the Dennis and SISIS GroundCare seminar at Durham CCC.
The Government has set out its Immigration policy post-transition by announcing the introduction of a new points-based immigration system commencing January 2021. The system is designed to attract high-skilled workers into the UK and to exclude a lowskilled workforce.
The Government’s overall stance puts the ornamental horticulture sector in a very precarious position from January 2021. The industry needs skilled horticulturalists in addition to casual seasonal workers to fulfil its labour requirements in the growing season and to enable industry expansion. Last year’s review of the Shortage Occupation List disappointingly excluded horticulturalists, despite the industry asking for this to be included having identified employment gaps for skilled horticulturalists.
Although the Government confirmed an increase in its Seasonal Agricultural Workers Scheme for 2020 to 10,000 places, ornamental horticulture is not included. There are no plans to extend the numbers despite evidence showing that the ornamental and edible sectors combined have 70,000 vacancies to fill during the season.
Martin Emmett, HTA Ornamentals Management Committee Chair, expresses his concerns: “The introduction of the points based
“Our concerns about future labour supply were validated in the Migration Advisory Committee’s report on the points-based system, published two weeks ago, they highlighted that our sector, along with other key parts of the economy (including social care), will be affected by labour shortages for skilled workers.
“The ornamental horticulture sector, along with other sectors, relies on a seasonal workforce for its essential operations. We stand ready to support Government targets on tree planting, import substitution, biosecurity and UK production, but the Government needs to support the industry in how the shortfalls in labour are to be fulfilled in 2021 and beyond.
We call on the Government to immediately look at significantly increasing the number of Seasonal Agriculture Worker Scheme places, extending this to the ornamental horticulture sector and to also ensure that ornamental and environmental horticulture is added to the Shortage Occupation List.
“Given that the Government’s approach to biosecurity is aimed at making the country less dependent on plant imports, we are faced with the challenge of producing more plants with less people. We need to explore, with the government, every possible mechanism to make this happen.”

Autumn green bio promises express results
Rigby Taylor has announced the Autumn Green BiO fertiliser - a new 3-0-12+8Fe+6CaO+2MgO micro granular formulation that includes a ‘BiO Pack’ and zeolite to ensure enhanced plant health and root development, improved disease resistance, rapid green-up and extended (two-three months) colour.
With zeolite helping to reduce leaching and improve the plant’s Cation Exchange Capacity, Autumn Green Bio’s potassium content also provides a constant top-up, which is essential for an improved root system, while a continuous supply of calcium avoids deficiencies that would lead to stunted roots and limited nutrient uptake. Carbohydrate storage increases as plant growth slows down and temperatures cool in the autumn. It is therefore essential that sufficient levels of potassium are maintained to prevent reduced levels of Adenosine Triphosphate - the energy source that drives all metabolic activity of plant cells produced during photosynthesis.
The dual source of iron in Autumn Green BiO provides extended colour for two-three months, and the addition of magnesium - the central element of chlorophyll –not only provides colour but also improves iron utilisation levels. In addition, the inclusion of seaweed and lignite - which, when applying at 35gm/m2 is the equivalent of eight applications of a liquid seaweed - improves the production of cytokinin and auxin, promoting cell division and elongation.

Toro and Reesink sponsored award honours maintenance of large living wall
It’s a nurturing hand that sees Nurture Landscapes win its fourth Grounds Maintenance Limited Public Access award at the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI) National Landscape Awards.
The award, which is sponsored by Toro and Reesink Turfcare, the exclusive distributor in the UK and Ireland for Toro groundscare machinery, recognises all sorts of grounds maintenance, and the project that won is not only a vertical space in the form of one of Europe’s largest living walls but has the added challenge of being alongside the Metro viaduct wall next to Snow Hill Station in Birmingham making access somewhat tricky!
At 220m long and 7m high with 604m2 of plants, it’s an eyecatching feature. As well as plants, the living wall incorporates decorative perforated aluminium panels designed to capture artificial and natural daylight. Programmable uplighters bring the wall to life at night and create constantly changing patterns and the illusion of depth and movement.
Reesink’s Alastair Rowell, who presented the award to the company in front of an audience of over 1000 BALI members and guests at the 43rd annual awards, said: “It’s a fantastic feat of grounds maintenance skill that Nurture Landscapes not only win this award, but win it for the fourth time.
“It’s grounds maintenance that creates a work of art and provides pleasure to so many commuters as well as being progressive and cutting-edge in its execution too.”
Paul Bean, sales director at Nurture Landscapes, says: “To be recognised again is testament to the enthusiasm, passion and skill of our teams.
“We invest in training our people well and creating strong business-to-business relationships.
“This award reinforces we’re doing the right thing and we’re generating the kind of success we’d always hoped for.”

An inspirational Dennis & SISIS Groundcare Seminar
The aptly named Storm Dennis certainly didn’t prevent the annual Dennis and SISIS groundcare seminar from going ahead, and by all accounts it once again inspired, educated and offered real solutions.
Hosted at the Durham County Cricket Club’s Emirates Riverside Stadium over 150 volunteers and professionals representing schools, sports clubs, local authorities and contractors from all over the UK experienced a truly memorable day.
Marcus North, Durham Director of Cricket and former Australian batsman, kick-started the event much to the delight of the attendees. The left-handed batsman, who played 21 Tests for his country and played for five counties in England, proceeded to offer a unique insight into all the various pitches he has played on throughout the world.
Not only did his talk offer a glimpse into an international cricket player’s perspective but it also offered an interesting insight into a club’s relationship with the groundstaff.
Speakers included Iain James from TGMS Ltd, the Institute of Groundsmanship’s Ian Powell and a Q&A hosted by Vic Demain (Durham CCC), with a panel of experts including Keith Kent (Head Pitch Advisor for Rugby Groundsmen Connected), Jim Dawson (Head Groundsman at BT Murrayfield), Karl McDermott (Head Groundsman at MCC Lord’s), Sean Williams (Head Groundsman at Gloucestershire CCC) and Gordon Gill (Former Head Groundsman at Bath CC).
Barry Glynn hilariously reflected on his career in ‘Frustrations of a Groundsman: Part 2’ before the legendary Keith Kent proceeded with a presentation entitled ‘Winter Sports Pitches to Cricket Outfields – what do we need to do?’
There was also groundcare advice from event sponsors - Limagrain UK, Boughton Loam, Thomas Sherriff, Stuart Canvas, Fleet Line Markers, Cricket World, SIS Pitches, Poweroll, Facility and Sports Club Development and Headland Amenity.

Hard landscape care covered with extended ECOPROTEC range
The growing popularity of outdoor living spaces – and of seamless floor finishes – has created new challenges for the landscape sector.
In response, LTP has developed three new ECOPROTEC treatments to help maintain the appearance and safety of natural and engineered stone surfaces. All treatments are made in the UK and benefit from the most advanced research in waterbased technology.
For new porcelain pavers, the range now includes ECOPROTEC Porcelain Tile Protector - a waterbased ‘pre-and-post-grout’ treatment. Creating a barrierwithout forming a film or altering appearance – the Protector helps to improve and increase the working time of grouts and jointing compounds. It also greatly reduces the risk of cement and resin staining. A further coat after installation makes ongoing maintenance easier too, protecting the surface from decaying leaves and foliage.
For existing dark pavers, the range includes new ECOPROTEC Blackstone – a restorer and protector for faded surfaces – and a new acidreplacement trouble-shooter, ECOPROTEC Grout & Salt Residue Remover.
Blackstone can be used on all types of natural and artificial stone, restoring colour from dark grey to ebony. Meanwhile, the Remover tackles building residues and disperses rising salt residues caused by substrate moisture and spot fixing. It can be used on all tile and natural stone surfaces, except those with a polished finish.
For deep cleaning, ECOPROTEC External Paving Cleaner removes dirt, including stubborn green and dark deposits caused by plant and leaves. Other intensive cleaners include ECOPROTEC Rust Stain Remover – a noncaustic solution that offers safe treatment on all pavers.

Charcon provides firstclass paving solution for university
Charcon, the hard landscaping division of Aggregate Industries, has helped to transform The Concourse – an area connecting buildings at Sheffield University, by supplying a pioneering paving solution as part of the University’s public realm regeneration project.
Due to its global reputation for teaching and research, it is a popular educational destination for international students, with almost 25% of its student population coming from over 150 different countries. In recent years, this demand has driven the need for a more multicultural and cohesive campus, featuring a well-conceived and enjoyable public space.
The Concourse will connect the new student union to the heart of the university campus on Western Bank, which includes some of the most historic and recognisable buildings within the campus. The architects, HLM, were tasked with using a contemporary materials pallet that offered a nod to the past, but also connected to the future.
In this area of Sheffield, Portuguese granite is used heavily in many streetscapes in the form of kerbs and detailing. Therefore, HLM wanted to incorporate Portuguese yellow granite as an accent feature
and required a concrete product that had high sustainability values to enhance the green credentials of the scheme in accordance with Sheffield City Council’s ‘Grey to Green’ Strategy.
The challenge was to create a modern and sustainable design that enhanced the human experience using materials that complement the historic aesthetics of the site. Therefore, Charcon’s Andover Textured product was chosen due to high aesthetic qualities and its recycled content, of which both the recycled and virgin materials are UK sourced materials. This was combined with the bands of Portuguese yellow granite setts to connect the new space to existing local vernacular of granite kerbs and concrete paving.
To ensure the final product met client expectations, Charcon worked in coordination with the architects and the contractor, providing advice on installation and detailing. Testament to the success of this bespoke solution, this materials pallet will form the basis of a newly adopted strategy for all future university developments within the heart of the main campus and its surrounding buildings.

Aggregate Industries backs Manchester cycle network
With Greater Manchester’s pioneering cycling network leading the way, Aggregate Industries is backing the initiative as a national blueprint for walking and cycling schemes, stating that improving road safety is critical to getting more people on their bikes.
Andy Burnham, the mayor of Greater Manchester, and Chris Boardman, the region’s cycling and walking commissioner, released Change a Region to Change a Nation.
The report calls on the government to support the Bee Network initiative, a 1,800 mile network of protected routes for pedestrians and cyclists, revealing it could provide a national blueprint for reducing congestion and air pollution and improving health.
With this in mind, Aggregate Industries is backing the Bee Network as a national blueprint for walking and cycling
schemes, reiterating that improving road safety needs to be the central tenet to making such infrastructure a reality.
Mark Barter, Sales Director at Aggregate Industries, said: “As the first project of its kind, it really demonstrates the importance of how adhering to extremely high design and construction standards, including correct lane segregation and colour demarcation can create a local walking and cycling network that everyone can use in the safest manner possible.
“Having worked on some of the most high-profile walking and cycling schemes across the country – including in London, Birmingham and Leeds – we’ve found that having a clear strategy in place to tackle road dangers is the only way to deliver a network will encourage more residents to consider walking and cycling for short, everyday journeys.”

Kemper delivers green roof solution
A sustainable contemporary home featuring two green roofs has been constructed with the help of Kemper System.
Chapter House, located in Surrey, has been built using a range of natural materials, including timber cladding and Scandinavian bricks.
The homeowner and former builder helped to specify Kemper System’s Kemperol V210 liquid waterproofing resin for the project. The product was required for a sedum roof above the main living area and another above the new garage.
The homeowner was keen to be involved in their design, especially the waterproofing to ensure the most effective solution.
The Kemperol V210 liquid resin was installed ‘wet on wet’ in a single process using a reinforcement fleece. Once cured, it formed a seamless and elastomeric membrane. The waterproofing membrane is a vital element of any green roof specification.
The use of Kemperol guarantees a watertight barrier between the roof substrate and the green roof systems, which is also root and rot resistant without the need for a protection layer.

Grassroof is the environmental solution
For green roof technology to have a significant beneficial effect on our environment then it has to become an “everyday” specification that is easily available for use on both new and existing buildings.
A key factor in achieving widespread use is the simplicity of the system and how it is installed.
Grassroof from GrassConcrete now combines with our new Regarm, a re-cycled moisture retaining blanket that feeds roots and at the same time reduce the volume and rate of water draining from roof tops.
Regarm is used for extensive, simple intensive and intensive applications. When used in an Extensive application, it enables the elimination of soil layers beneath the sedum turf and in
doing so reduces the imposed load on the roof structure. It also greatly simplifies the process of delivering materials to the rooftop
for installation, a significant benefit for retro-fit projects.

A cut above the rest The Headland way for fast weed control
Headland Amenity’s New Way
Weedspray is a fast-acting, nonselective herbicide based on naturally occurring ingredients.
It is currently the only registered herbicide approved for the control of moss on hard surfaces such as footpaths and pavements. Unlike other moss killers, NWWS will also control weeds and grass, eliminating the need for a separate application.
The active ingredient, acetic acid, has been formulated from the highest food-grade product and developed with a naturally occurring protein additive. This combination doubles the herbicidal properties of acetic acid compared to standard products.
The result is a product that produces discolouration and browning of the foliage within just a few hours of treatment and in good growing conditions, most weeds will die within one to two days. While perennial
weeds generally require more than a single application for control, annual weeds are usually controlled with only one.
New-Way Weedspray can be used to control weed growth in amenity situations such as footpaths and pavements, parks,
around trees, shrubs and hedges and in industrial areas such as railways, industrial sites and fence lines etc. As well as hard areas, it can be used to control moss on artificial sports surfaces.
New weedburner from RIPAGREEN
This hot air instantly causes a thermal shock that damages the chlorophyll producing part of the plant, preventing photosynthesis.
The plant then dies naturally with a visible result after a few hours.
To effectively weed with RIPAGREEN, it is not necessary to burn the plant, but only give it a “hot shot” (about 80 ° in the thickness of the leaf).
The “reserves” in the roots of the plant will determine how effective the treatment is. With a regular frequency of passage, any plant will be weakened until it is exhausted.
Makita has added to its impressive range of cordless outdoor machinery with a new twin 18 Volt Brushless Brush Cutter designed to suit the needs of commercial operators and landscapers looking for a high powered, quiet and easyto-use brush cutter.
The DUR368AZ Brushless LXT Brush Cutter is a cordless machine powered by two 18V Li-ion batteries. The advanced battery technology from Makita provides 36V of power and runtime without leaving the 18V platform, meaning operators can be confident the machine will endure longer tasks, enabling work over a wide area with just one charge.
Providing an excellent alternative to heavy powered machinery, which can be cumbersome to manoeuvre or access varied shrubland and undergrowth, the DUR368AZ Brush Cutter is a lightweight tool that uses the same counter clockwise blade rotation as petrol brush cutters, making handling comfortable and familiar, for traditional users.
With user comfort in mind, the U-Handle grip has been designed so that the centre line of the handle bars stay aligned with the users centre of gravity, whilst the active-feedback technology provides extra protection for the user– when the metal blade hits a solid object such as a tree stump or fence, the sudden decrease in rpm triggers the brake, stopping kickback occurring.
Users can select the desired speed from three variants on the LED display and in areas of dense high grass or heavy brushwood, the reverse switch makes dealing with any tangled grass clippings easy, by slowly reversing the rotation of the cutting tool.
The DUR368AZ uses a brushless motor, meaning no friction is created within the motor, to improve the longevity of the tool.
Combining this technology with LXT batteries makes the machine up to 50% more effi cient and twice as durable, in comparison to alternative models with standard motors. In addition to this, the Automatic Torque Drive function automatically changes the cutting speed according to load condition for optimum operation.
“Operators need machinery that is safe, can provide extensive use, is flexible to work on wide areas, and can tackle every situation, without the worry of power supply,” says Mark
Earles, Business Development Manager for garden machinery at Makita.
“Whether it be accuracy around flower beds, clearing undergrowth and thick vegetation, the DUR368AZ Brushless Brush Cutter LXT is indispensable.
“We understand that commercial operators work year-round and the brushless motor produces lower vibration levels, improving the safety and comfort of those using the machine.”
LXT is used across over 200 Makita tools, meaning that operators can easily switch between tools depending on the task.

Bayer launch their first biological control to tackle leatherjackets and chafer grubs
Bayer has launched a new unique patent protected biological nematode control to help greenkeepers and groundsmen to maintain quality playing surfaces.
Harmonix Tri-Nema brings together the latest nematode technology to effectively tackle leatherjackets and chafer grubs.
Neil Pettican, Bayer head of sales, says the unique solution targets the damaging pests during two critical periods of the greenkeeping season. The treatment contains three specifically selected nematode species, which each use a different method to control turf pests.
“Additionally, they become more aggressive as they try to out compete each other to become the dominant species, increasing the effectiveness of the application and its capability to control the pests.
“Over recent years, chafer grub and leatherjacket populations have been on the rise, resulting in significant damage to turf playing surfaces. But Harmonix Tri-Nema provides one solution with three different modes of activity.
“Collectively the three species provide more effective distribution through the soil profile, leading to more consistent results,” he says.
“With regulatory changes putting pressure on chemical solutions, alternative options will be fundamental in maintaining high quality turf. However, this nematode control solution will slot into an integrated approach, while helping reduce pesticide applications and therefore resistance.”
Neil explains that both chafer grubs and leatherjackets have different peak seasons, due to their lifecycles, so it’s important to monitor for activity carefully to ensure infestations are identified and treated at the right timing, before significant damage is done.
“Chafer grubs emerge from their eggs in the summer months, so treatment for this pest is recommended between May and August. However, to achieve successful control over leatherjackets, the best application window is between late August and November, whilst the leatherjackets are still at a juvenile stage” he says.
He adds that it is important to consider application conditions as well as recommended timings.
“Our research for both chafer grub and leatherjacket control shows that for heavy infestations the best results are seen when 250,000 nematodes/m2 are applied to the
affected area, with a follow up treatment two weeks later. This maximises the ability for the nematodes to penetrate, attach and infect newly hatched eggs.
“For areas that are not severely infested, one application at the normal rate of 500,000 nematodes per m2 would be sufficient.”
Neil adds that it’s also important to apply nematodes in moist conditions, and in low light so ideally this should be early in the morning or the evening when soil temperatures are above 12°C.
“With limited chemical options available for controlling these pests, this new biological solution provides an alternative tool for greenkeepers that fits within an integrated approach. It helps avoid turf damage from pests during peak seasons, improving turf consistency and playability.” he concludes.
Sterling work controlling moss
Love it or loathe it, moss is here to stay, with some gardening experts singing the praises of a muchmaligned, almost demonised plant.
Climate change and warmer, wetter winters have signalled boom times for moss as it breaks new ground across a myriad surfaces, some well clear of human footfall, others on well-trodden walkways.
On health and safety grounds alone, intervention to control moss on publicly accessible areas is critical, given today’s litigious society.
Landscape contractor Wild Ground applies moss control measures on sites as diverse as golf courses, sportsgrounds, amenity areas and car parks.
“My Cooper Pegler knapsack sprayers are my main line of attack,” notes Richard Parkinson, “but larger affected areas may merit mechanical brushes initially. Moss loves those small, narrow, damp patches where the sun seldom shines. Shade under trees encourages growth, and fences can create microclimates that favour flourishing growth.”
The problem with moss, as we all know, is that it keeps coming back, as Richard explains. “Rougher surfaces such as Tarmac present ideal conditions, because the plant takes hold in the interstitial spaces of the material. Brushing moss away mechanically may only prove a temporary solution, leaving spores free to proliferate more.”
Moss-affected roofs also present issues. “Clumps falling off tiling gains purchase around building
perimeters, creating colonies difficult to access,” he adds.
“The wet autumn and winter this year has given moss a head start on us,” he continues, “so by March I’m really keen to mount an assault on heavily affected areas. But there are a few factors to consider before stepping out. If spraying, choose dry, calm days, to reduce risk of spray drift and treatment liquids running away to drain.
“Protecting the environment is a major priority and operators need to be both competent to spray [PA1 and PA6] and aware of best practice to avoid polluting greywater, surface runoffs, ponds and lakes.”
Operators working near water are required to have aquatic approval and gain site consent. Depending on their proximity to watercourses, they would also be required to hold their PA6AW.
“As best practice, I try to maintain moss-prone hard surfaces regularly, perhaps starting with a liquid application then brushing to limit the likelihood of moss gaining a foothold again,” he adds, before advising operators to wear a good respiratory mask to prevent inhaling vapour, and getting suited and booted for optimum protection.”

PSD Groundscare offer a range of weed strippers and brushes that offer the ideal solution to unwanted weeds. Eco-friendly and entirely chemical free, these devices offer an easy and effective solution to weeding.
The weed strippers from Koppl and AS Motor provide completely green weed removal, they will eliminate all traces of weeds, algae, moss and lichen and the debris that they thrive in, making regular maintenance simple and effective.
The range of Weed brushes from AS Motor includes a battery powered model and a new flexible weedbrush head offering improved handling which can be used with three, four or six braid brushes. The weed strippers offer outstanding performance on many surfaces, including cobbles and block paving and with the quick-change functionality of the Koppl power unit they can be used for many other tasks such as sweeping or snow clearance.
Valdor Flex now available from Agrovista Amenity
UNIQUE residual turf herbicide, Valdor Flex, is now available from Agrovista Amenity.
Valdor Flex was introduced to the UK turf and amenity market last year and has been widely praised for providing excellent residual control for even the hardest to manage weeds.
Turf and amenity managers are encouraged to improve the efficiency of their herbicide programmes by using the product, which is active on a wide range of surfaces including open soil, gravel and industrial areas.
Its success is attributed to its two synergistic active ingredients, diflufenican and iodosulfuronmethyl-sodium, which help to minimise the risk of resistance through two complementary modes of action.
In fact, Valdor Flex keeps the soil weed free for up to four months with just one single application, providing cleaner surfaces for longer, and helping to target herbicide use more effectivity.
Agrovista Amenity’s John Marland believes that the product is a great addition to the company’s ever-expanding portfolio.
“The long-term activity of Valdor Flex keeps soil weed-free for up to four months, which reduces the frequency of applications throughout the season,” he said. “This makes it a cost-effective solution for our amenity customers, as well as offering other benefits such as contributing to resistance management, something that our industry needs to keep on top of.”
Valdor Flex controls a range of common weeds and can be used standalone prior to germination or before weed emergence. If weeds are present, it can be mixed with glyphosate or a fatty acid, which helps to provide the initial knockdown.
ICL’s quadruple FACTS and BASIS success
ICL Turf & Landscape is celebrating the success of four members of staff after two became FACTS Qualified Advisers and two were awarded their Full BASIS Amenity Advisor Awards.
BASIS is an independent standards-setting and auditing organisation for the pesticide, fertilizer and allied industries. It offers a range of recognised qualifications for people working in those sectors, including the BASIS and FACTS schemes, and manages the Professional Register for qualified advisers.
FACTS is available to those who have already qualified for the BASIS Professional Register and want to gain Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points. The course builds on an individual’s prior level of agronomic knowledge and candidates must have at least one year’s experience of fertilizer and nutrient management planning in the UK.
ECHO cuts a competitive edge
ECHO is expanding its X Series range with best-in-class products and newly revised pricing for the 2020 season. This follows a year of exceptional growth in the commercial outdoor power tool sector.
“The X-Series is ECHO’s representation of best-inclass professional products and the company has found commercial users are attracted by the performance and quality of the machines, together with
the industry-leading warranty support.” Says Matt Wilson, ECHO UK Sales Manager.
As part of the expansion, ECHO is also revising prices on its key commercial products, widening the access of commercial product to a larger market. The combination offers great potential for the professional user and contributes to ECHO’s growing competitive edge.

Manufactured by Bayer, it uses the latest generation of wettable granule (WG) to ensure the product remains stable in water for at least 24 hours, meaning any remaining solution in the tank can be used the following day. Valdor Flex should be applied from February through to June, a single application required per season, and is available in 10g sachets or 500g bottles.
The 10g sachets can be mixed in a knapsack sprayer with 6-10 litres of water, providing the operator with surface coverage of up to 200m2. For those looking to treat a larger area, the 500g bottle can be mixed with 300-500 litres of water and applied with a tractor mounted sprayer to achieve coverage of 1ha. This unique product also has a low odour, eliminates the risk of stains on treated surfaces, and consists of an incredibly low dust formulation which helps to reduce operator exposure.

Greenkeepers Training Committee receive Government approval for
The Golf Greenkeeping Trailblazer Group has announced the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE) has approved the ADVANCED GOLF GREENKEEPER Apprenticeship Standard (Level 3) for delivery.
Following the launch and success of the Level 2 Golf Greenkeeper Apprenticeship in England, the Golf Greenkeeping Trailblazer Group has been working tirelessly to develop a suitable programme of education, training and assessment to meet the new Standards for Level 3.
Having the full support of England Golf and the British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association and working closely with employers and Training Providers, this means there is now a structured pathway of education from Golf Greenkeeper to Advanced Golf Greenkeeper.
Designed for Senior Greenkeepers/ First Assistants/Deputy Head Greenkeepers/Deputy Course
Managers, this Apprenticeship will provide the greenkeeper with the skills and knowledge to operate at an advanced level where supervisory or specialist technical skills are required.
As with the Level 2, there is a series of graded, independent assessments at the end of a programme of education and these will ensure all future qualified Greenkeepers will have the skills, knowledge and behaviours as determined in the new Standard.
David Croxton, GTC Trailblazer Chairman says: “It is great news to hear the Government have approved the Level 3. Having worked with employers and Training Providers in our sector, we believe we have now developed two new Apprenticeships that meet the employer’s requirements – to develop a highly skilled and knowledgeable workforce.”
Richard Flint, England Golf’s Participation & Club Support Director says: “England Golf are
delighted that the Government has approved the Assessment Plan for the Advanced Golf Greenkeeper. This now shows the levels of progression for a greenkeeper and how their knowledge, skills and behaviours will continue to develop stronger golf clubs.”
Jim Croxton, CEO BIGGA added: “Reaching this point is an exciting time in greenkeeper education. Having a complement of apprenticeships will not only strengthen the professionalism of our industry, but also provides a structured programme of education for anyone looking
at greenkeeping as a career.”
Work is continuing with the Golf Course Manger Apprenticeship (Level 5), which we hope will be approved later this year.

BIGGA support team chosen for the 149th Open Championship SALTEX proves good for business
The Open 2019 is heading to Sandwich in Kent this July and the British & International Golf Greenkeepers Association has revealed which members have been selected to join the volunteer support team that will help maintain playing standards throughout the event.
Each year The R&A requests BIGGA’s assistance with the championship and this will be the fourth time a volunteer team of BIGGA members has attended an Open at Royal St George’s, having also helped out in 1993, 2003 and 2011.

Findings from the SALTEX 2019 post-show exhibitor survey have confirmed that the 2019 event was extremely valuable for a high percentage of groundscare exhibitors.
In fact it was deemed so successful that more than half of exhibitors reserved their space for the 2020 event before the end of the 2019 show and organisers have since reported a record number of repeat business, stand upgrades and an influx of debut exhibitors – with more than
200 companies committing to SALTEX 2020.
The survey findings confirm that 96 per cent of survey respondents generated new sales leads and 82 per cent have already taken orders as a direct result of exhibiting at the show. The record-breaking 9,104 attendance was rated as excellent by 85 per cent of exhibitors and, crucially, the quality of visitors scored 91 per cent.

delivering both a greener and cleaner cut
Reading Football Club are delighted with their trio of 34”
INFINICUT Fixed Head mowersreducing noise, hand-arm vibration and lowering the club’s fuel costs.
For Grounds Manager Adam Grantham, as well as ticking a number of environmental boxes, the mowers have also achieved a significantly improved quality of cut.
“There’s no denying that the industry is moving towards
the electric route. We have to be mindful, in a stadium environment, of the decibel levels and the way this pollutes and echoes,” he said.
“Not only that but we should all be looking at methods and machines that are greener and safer for our teams to use on a daily basis. They have delivered a superior cut and finish and handle well, dealing with the camber and ‘shelf’ that surrounds the pitch.”
The lithium battery power means quiet operation comes as standard, with the club’s shed now rigged up with easy ‘in and out’ charging points.
They also purchased a set of TurfClean cassettes for postmatch debris removal and surface clearance, as well as ThatchMaster cassettes from the renowned TMSystem.

Otterbine service resumed at golf club
Otterbine has been chosen again by Northamptonshire County Golf Club to maintain its irrigation reservoir.
Otterbine has been impressing the Open Regional Qualifying club in the Midlands with its ability to keep 3.5 million gallons of water clean, clear and heathy for 15 years, so when the club’s high volume 5hp surface spray aerator reached the end of its life, it was soon replaced like-for-like.
Rob Hay, course manager, says: “The reservoir was built 18 years ago after a couple of particularly hot summers to take us off the mains for irrigation.
“Otterbine was recommended by the club’s irrigation contractor, Stuart Sanders of SJS Irrigation, and from the moment it was installed it has delivered on its promise to manage the reservoir’s severe aquatic environment. Its power and longevity are exemplary. The contractor advised never turning the aerator off, so it wasn’t, and it has performed consistently for 15 non-stop years!”
School invests in a GKB Rotobrush to take their grounds to the next level
Home to full sized Astroturf, grass cricket wicket, a nine-hole golf course and an all-weather wicket, there was no better match than the GKB Rotobrush for Witham Hall Preparatory School.
Alex Exton, Groundsman at Witham Hall Preparatory School explains that the GKB Rotobrush perfectly fits their needs. “It is a compact and efficient machine that it is perfect for what I
wanted it for.” He continues, “This machine was affordable to which was a big appeal. It’s rare you can get such an impressive machine for such a great price.”
As your synthetic sport pitches get used, dirt becomes apparent. From moss and algae to general wear and tear, this ultimately can affect the technical characteristics and authentic appearance of the turf. The
GKB Rotobrush restores this by tackling persistent contamination. Alex explains, “We use our GKB Rotorbrush to clean our Astro. Due to the size of our grounds it can take a while however this machine is the best of the best!”
The GKB Rotobrush enables you to brush deeper and more effectively where needed. Thanks to the rotating brush disc that is provided
with extra rigid bristles, your artificial pitch maintenance can be taken to the next level. When the functioning of normal brushing and cleaning stops, the GKB Rotobrush continues. Alex Exton said “The GKB Rotobrush gets so close to the edges of the Astroturf, especially where the carpet meets the fence kickboard and also on the artificial for the cricket.”
GKB Machines
This is particularly impressive considering the quantity of water it’s dealing with and the fact that the club has a standard usage cycle of 80,000 litres of water a night. Continuing the good work is another high volume 5hp Otterbine aerator from distributor Reesink Turfcare.
The reason for Otterbine’s longevity comes down to being manufactured from highly durable, corrosion-resistant oil-cooled 18 gauge/316 grade stainless steel. Its aerator float has been manufactured from
rugged closed cell, foam-filled polyethylene which means it manages effluent or high nutrient water with ease, and its efficiency can be attributed to the precision pitched stainless steel impeller that’s virtually indestructible.
Peter Newton from Reesink says: “Otterbine’s high volume range is outstanding at keeping large bodies of water healthy and usable and we’re seeing excellent results from golf clubs who want to come off the mains and recycle or reuse water.”

ISEKI start distribution of Raymo electric mowers
ISEKI UK & Ireland has been appointed as the exclusive distributor for Raymo products throughout the UK, Ireland and the Middle East.
ISEKI UK & Ireland have had great success with the large national grounds maintenance contractors and a large majority of them using ISEKI tractors and mowers today.
Following numerous discussions and feedback from their customers ISEKI noticed a gap in the market where contractors are being asked by their customer base for all-electric options for their grass cutting needs and that as of now there were no products available that could meet that need.
One of the problems with electric mowers is that the weight of dragging an operator (and all the associated hardware) around really negatively impacts on the run time that you can get from the batteries, by taking the operator off of the machine and making it remote control the Raymo products can give unrivalled run times from its Lithium battery pack.
The Raymo electric, zeroemission, remote controlled mower is a unique product that with the ability to swap power packs, offers you a versatile multi-use mower.

Sherriff finds the ‘ideal tonic’ for Tiverton GC
George Stephens, course manager at Tiverton Golf Club in Devon, claims that Sherriff Amenity has provided him with the ideal tonic to help the greens combat stress and aid root development.
Evolution Controlled is a fertiliser range consisting of nutrients packaged in a coated granule that are released over an extended period of time. It is a controlled release autumn and winter fertiliser specially formulated with high potassium for turf hardness which ensures a rapid growth response, even at low temperatures – something which particularly impressed George.
“It gave us exactly what we looking for,” he said. “The first time I applied Evolution Controlled was at the end of the summer to try and get the recovery.
“I put it down at 35g/m² and in the first two weeks it was like wildfire which is what we wanted. We then applied a growth regulator and from then on it was nice and gradual right the way through until the end of December / start of January.
“I was surprised because there are not many other products that I’ve seen grow in this period – in fact my third fairway was still growing at Christmas. The other products we trialled Evolution
Headland Amenity launch Ascoflex and PPT114
Controlled against just seemed to slow up at the end of October.”
George also turned to Evolution Controlled to solve a frequent problem which was occurring at the bottom of the third hole much to the annoyance of the golfers.
As George continued to implement improvements around the golf course, his attentions soon turned to the greens. He persisted in trial work to find an ideal tonic to help the greens combat stress and aid root development and was adamant that seaweed was the solution.
“Sherriff Amenity’s Seavolution liquid really does
smell of authentic seaweed,” he added. “It is cold processed, not heat treated, which means you are getting all of the goodness straight away. I actually saw a video of it being made and the product is basically coming straight off the rock and into the tin.”
Due to the unique cold extraction process Seavolution is high in micronutrients, plant hormones and alginates, all of which are found naturally in Ascophyllum nodosum. George uses it as part of a tank-mix which also contains elements of nitrogen, iron and potassium and he has reported fantastic results.

Nutrition is the answer
Temperature controlled release fertiliser for gentle spring recovery
Most Multigreen® analyses contain an uncoated, ‘fast start’ portion and a polymer-coated, controlled release prill. The prill takes up moisture through pores in the polymer-resin coating. The initial release period provides quick turf response at low soil temperatures.
temperatures of 6°C facilitate release from the polymer coated portion triggering grass growth.
The start of 2020 has seen two new products into the Headland Amenity plant health range –Ascoflex Plus and Ascoflex 15.
In addition, they introduced PPT114 – a product to further compliment their non-pesticidal disease management strategy.
Ascoflex is a new, UK-sourced extract derived from Knotted Wrack Seaweed (Ascophyllum nodosum). The Ascoflex manufacturing process offers the optimum extraction of bioactive compounds – the important bits that provide growth stimulation and stress tolerance. Ascoflex differs from many competitors in declaring actual content of polysaccharide and plant growth substances.
In addition to the bioactive Seaweed extract, Ascoflex Plus features ‘ProactinEX’, a patented, plant-derived biostimulant package containing L-form amino acids, B-Complex vitamins and antioxidants. To enable a rapid plant response and help improve uptake, ProactinEX utilises express technology - a patented formulation using SAR compounds and a transcuticular nutrient delivery system.
The benefits of using good quality seaweed extracts in foliar and root drench applications are
well established on sports turf. Ascoflex Plus aims to build on these benefits by providing additional plant-available amino acids, vitamins and antioxidants. Amino acids are involved in numerous functions that facilitate healthy growth, including shoot and root development, nitrogen transfer within the plant and chlorophyll production.
Ascoflex 15 is a straight seaweed extract and is suitable for applications on larger, outfield areas. No nutrition is added to the formulation during processing and therefore Ascoflex 15 represents a pure seaweed extract, perfect for application with liquid fertilisers and wetting agents such as Tricure AD.
Following on from the highly successful introduction of Mantle in 2019, PPT114 is a new soluble, micronutrient formulation featuring Manganese, Zinc and Copper. It has been developed to increase the efficacy of planthealth applications, helping to minimise Microdochium nivale infection. In addition, the incorporation of two different sources of iron is designed to maximise winter colour when used in a tank mix.

DLF extend Pro Flora and Colour
Boost wildflower collections
To meet the increasing demand for conservation mixtures and environmental areas within both sports venues and amenity land, DLF have expanded their range of wildflower mixtures.
The Pro Flora collection, each designed to recreate a particular habitat or suit specific site and soil conditions, now contains 14 UK native mixtures thanks to the addition of Pro Flora 13 and Pro Flora 14 for 2020.
The non-native Colour Boost wildflower range has also been extended, from three mixtures to six.
As demand for improved biodiversity on all major landscape projects grows, Pro Flora 13 species-rich lawn and landscape mixture has been developed to contain 20% native origin wildflowers with 80% fine-leaved, low-growing grasses. This mixture massively increases the species count and diversity per m2 compared to a standard lawn mix.
In addition, the flexibility of maintenance makes it suitable for more intensively managed areas, as well as conventionally managed grasslands that receive just one or two cuts a year. The greater amount of time between cuts sees a greater number of species flower, providing additional benefits to pollenating insects.
Also new for 2020, Pro Flora 14 – tall herb and tussock mix –uses species with varying heights and structures to create habitat for a wider range of insects, small mammals, amphibians and reptiles. Tall herb grassland provides a vital pollen and nectar source late into the year to sustain invertebrates, in turn providing a food source for birds and predators higher up the food chain.
These taller growing species can help to visually blend more traditional parkland/meadow mixtures with woodland and natural scrub and should be maintained in sections, to retain the essential habitat that has been created.
DLF have also added three new mixtures to the popular Colour Boost range. Originally introduced in 2018, the collection is specifically designed for maximum floral impact, incorporating cultivated flowering species to deliver a colourful longlasting display. The collection provides an essential food source and habitat for many species of animals and invertebrates, especially pollenating insects.
With a focus on a specific colour palette, Colour Boost 4 provides a warm mix of flowers from pale pinks through to deep reds, flowering from late spring through to late autumn. Over the same flowering period, Colour Boost 5 delivers yellows in every shade, including California Poppy and Tickseed.
Finally, Colour Boost 6 is a true ‘chameleon’ – a diverse mixture of over 40 species and subspecies that changes in colour throughout the growing season.
Barenbrug unveils new varieties and research
For 2020 Barenbrug has unveiled brand new products and ground-breaking research and development which has made the company’s SPORT RANGE one of the leading names in the industry.
SGT (Sustainable Grass Technology) is developed to produce a stress-tolerant grass for long-term sustainable turf management. The SGT Fairway grass seed has been produced after years of careful research on numerous sites across Europe. This rye/fescue blend has been formulated to reduce the need for fertiliser, water, and fungicide.
Barenbrug has also increased its bentgrass product range for 2020, with the introduction of a completely new product, Duo Bent, to the range.
The SGT Fairway mixture is a brand-new composition of four different grass species and sub-species, which has been
formulated for the overseeding and divoting of medium-fine golf fairway and tee turf.
Barenbrug’s research-heavy dedication to this product means that this mixture can deliver high-quality turf performance in high-stress conditions with a reduced need for chemicals, water and fertilisers.
The driving force behind this mixture is Barpium perennial ryegrass, which makes up 30% of the mix. Barpium is an exceptional fine-leafed ryegrass which has proven to be outstanding at utilising nitrogen effi ciently. In fact, it requires 50% less nitrogen to deliver the equivalent performance of other mixtures.
The Duo Bent mixture is specially formulated for overseeding and species exchange on golf and bowling greens. It is specifically to be used on golf courses that are attempting to outcompete
Poa annua on low height cut on greens. Like the All Bent, this mixture uses New Zealand bred capillaris browntop, Charles. Explicitly chosen for its visual merit and shoot density; this cultivar is what makes the mixture so resistant to Poa annua.
L-93 XD is the latest stolonifera creeping bentgrass produced by USA breeding programmes. During the NTEP trials in 2018, this bentgrass was ranked highly on ‘mean quality’; achieving a top-25% status in almost two-thirds of the locations it was tested in, which compares favorably with many UK based cultivars.
Barenbrug’s latest published research from an independently assessed STRI backed four-year trial highlighted the benefits of combining creeping and browntop cultivars to help fight Poa annua.

BASF launch new plant growth regulator
BASF has launched Attraxor, a new plant growth regulator (PGR) that features the powerful active Prohexadione calcium.
Attraxor reduces the longitudinal shoot growth of grass which lessens the frequency of mowing and the volume of clippings created.
Dr Manuel Daumann, Technical Manager Ornamentals, Turf & Beneficial Nematodes for BASF explains: “At the recommended dose rate, one application of Attraxor will give a reduction in fresh weight of grass cuttings of up to 70% and a lowering in grass height of up to 40% for up to four weeks after application. Attraxor also enhances turf root formation and acts, due to its unique effects on seed head production, as a Poa annua management tool.”
Poa annua, also known as annual meadow grass or bluegrass, negatively impacts turf quality and sward density. In sporting situations, such as a golf putting green, it can also affect the roll of the ball. “Attraxor works by reducing the seed head production and regenerative potential of Poa annua. In doing so it supplants Poa annua, strengthens turf and increases sward density which helps reduce the risk of fungal infections such as Anthracnose,” explains Dr Daumann.
BASF is expanding its portfolio of products in the amenity market and Attraxor is the first product being introduced in 2020.
Anthony O’Hare, UK Country Manager for professional & specialty solutions says: “We are excited to launch Attraxor in the UK.
“It is a unique product that will help manage turf in a number of sporting applications such as golf, football, tennis and horse racing. However, we also see applications for it to be used in parks and other public areas.”
Grass seed sales soar by 40% over the past two years
Johnsons Lawn Seed, the UK’s oldest grass seed supplier, is celebrating a 40% rise in lawn seed sales over the past two years, as demand strengthens for its market-leading portfolio of quality lawncare products.
The company, owned by DLF Seeds, says the UK market for grass seed has remained buoyant since autumn 2018, when demand tripled from garden retailers as consumers sought to repair lawns that were left parched by the UK’s joint hottest summer on record.
According to Johnsons, the sales bonanza, which drove demand for its Luxury Lawn, Shady
Place, Lawn Thickener, General Purpose, Quick Fix and After Moss lawn seed mixes, has been joined by rising demand for its Country Meadow Grass and Wildflower Seed, a mixture of native wildflowers that chimes with consumers who are looking to attract wildlife and beneficial pollinators to gardens.
As part of its mission to inject additional sales potential into lawncare departments, Johnsons Lawn Seed is introducing two key new lines for 2020 – the result of a significant programme of research and development. Tuffgrass with Dog Patch Resistance is a gamechanger for the lawn seed market,
a unique new product that finally banishes the problem of dog urine damage to lawns.
Also new for 2020 is Quick Lawn with Accelerator-treated seed, a new formulation that has been engineered to meet three key consumer demands: rapid germination, fast lawn establishment and reduced watering, requiring just a third of the amount of water that’s

Designed by Dutch manufacturer WeedControl B.V the AllTrec features130cm or 180cm width of cut with height of cut adjustable from 30-110mm. Electric motors directly power the three-blade 130cm deck four-blade 180cm deck with an adjustable speed of 2000-3000rpm.
When cutting with the four-blade 180cm deck, the battery will typically last for 6-8 hours and 7-9 hours using the three-blade 130cm deck.
All batteries come with a three-year warranty and have a lifetime of 2500 charge discharge cycles. The 48VDC battery uses LifePO4 technology with a capacity of 20kwh or an optional 30kwh, with onboard charging taking 4-8 hours.

The AllTrec zero turn unit can also be used with a number of other attachments including the Air E-Variator weed burner, weed brush, and hedge cutter.
Mean Green Electric Mowers’ latest CXR-52/60 Lithium-Ion battery-powered zero turn mower is equivalent to a 35hp diesel mower.
Designed to offer maximum torque from the start, it has a mowing time of up to seven hours per charge, with zero emissions and low noise.
The mower is powered by electric motors, which have no belts or hydraulics, making the running costs low and offering the added benefit of low Hand Arm Vibrations (HAVs) and Whole Body Vibrations (WBVs). With the recent wet conditions, the Mean Green Mowers have the advantage of being light weight, the CXR-52 weighing just over 500kg and when fitted with the optional Michelin Tweels, the machine leaves a minimal footprint.
Options are a 1.3 or 1.5m rear discharge deck, frontmounted low noise directional blower fully controlled without leaving the driver’s seat and a light kit which includes front/ rear lights, indicators and orange flashing beacon.

The new flail deck allows grass to be flail cut and collected or by simply inserting a plate, to be cut and dropped so maximising the versatility of the unit. Scarifying blades are also available. Hydrostatic drive with automatic or selectable four-wheel drive and a lockable differential makes for easy operation,” comments Iseki UK’s Richard Tyrell.
“Launched at Saltex, the latest SF450 model features the Muthing 1.6m collecting flail deck that allows grass to be flail cut and collected or simply and quickly converted to cut and drop as required,” he adds. It is powered by a 46hp diesel Stage V transition engine, and can also be supplied with an out front mower with a 1.5m rotary deck and a 1300 litre high tipping collector, with fourwheel drive and a selectable or automatically locking differential.
The SF224 is powered by a 22.5hp diesel Stage V-compliant engine and is available either as 1.36m collecting rotary mower with a 950 litre high tipping collector or with a 1.5m rotary deck and a tool carrying bed at the rear (it will also accept 1.4m flails). Customers can benefit from the low fuel costs and initial purchase costs on this model, points out Richard. Jacobsen has started a new era of customerfocused products with the launch of the AR530 rough mower.
The AR range has been redesigned from the ground up on the basis of customer research.
Jacobsen Product Manager Lee Frie explains: “We wanted to improve the experience of cutting with the AR and the results you get from it, and I think operators are going to find quite a bit different about this machine.”
Powered by Stage V-compliant engines, models are available with five or seven floating 58cm articulated contour rotary decks, with the AR530 providing a cutting width of 2.3m and the AR730 – which is due to launch in September 2020 – 3.15m.
Smaller decks are used on the new True Deck design to follow tight undulations and improve power per width of cut ratio. This eliminates clumping and produces a better after-cut appearance while height of cut adjustments can be made quickly and easily, says importer Ransomes Jacobsen.
The SureTrac II four-wheel drive traction system transfers power from a wheel that slips to the one that grips when climbing and on side slopes. Using this system allows the AR to glide over hilly terrain with acute undulations while giving an even cut by utilising the weight transfer system.
Sound levels of the machine have been lowered to make it quieter
for the operator and to reduce passer-by noise. Vibration has also been addressed to minimise operator fatigue. The seat position and InCommand II control system have been updated for maximum comfort and productivity while a new step design has been installed to make getting on and off the machine easier.
STM Co has added a new model to the V-Ride range, the 2020 V-Ride 32 version with a revised chassis layout for easy gateway
access and easier to fit in a van or on a trailer, and incorporating the features of the popular V-Ride 36.
The V-Ride 32A-16FX is powered by a 16hp Kawasaki FX engine with electric start and 18 litre fuel tank. Cutting is via the 80cm Advantage deck with the operator positioned directly over the cutting area for optimum visibility and working via the easy-to-use hand controls on the new style 2020 V-Ride operator pad.
Etesia has launched the new Hydro 80 MKHP5 ride-on mower, designed to cut and collect in all conditions with the added benefit of a differential lock. The new model gives operators extra traction and stability on difficult, uneven and undulating terrain by reducing wheel spin, reducing damage to the grass and aiding in cutting presentation. A mulching insert is also included as standard.
Capacity is boosted by the 80cm cutting width, 240 litre collecting box and 17hp Kawasaki FS481H engine. The Hydro 80 MKHP5 cuts and collects both long and short grass without clogging. At 1.98 m x 0.90 m wide, it is easily transported in a van or trailer and
can pass through most gateways, with a tight turning circle ideal for small or awkward areas.
Cutting height adjustment and emptying of the grass collector can all be activated from the driving seat, while the steering console is fitted with a timer, rev counter and electric starter.
Accessories include a snow plough, extending its season of use. A hose pipe fitting makes cleaning the cutting system quick and easy, with tool-free access to the engine.

Major Tri-Deck slashing mowing rates at Royal Tara GC
my team of six green-keepers, we maintain the course to the highest standards.”
Nestled in the Tara Hills near Dublin, Ireland, the 27-hole complex features sand-based greens for year-round playing.
“We used to use a ‘ride-on batwing mower’ but that was very slow, not so good at avoiding scalping and was quite expensive to maintain,” commented Jim.
“We needed a high performance mower, which was easy to operate and simple to maintain, with low running costs. The MAJOR Tri-Deck eliminates all the issues Jim and his team had before.
“The three-deck winged mower unfolds to 6.1m (20’) wide cutting width. The three-point pivot system combined with
front and rear rollers allows the machine to glide over surfaces and leave a striped finish without scalping the grass.
Its ten rotors have 40 contrarotating blades that overlap by 75mm to ensure all material is fi nely chopped and distributed evenly. The team at Royal Tara can cover up to 16 acres per hour and have reduced their mowing time from what was a full week, down to just three days.
“This is one of the best pieces of equipment that we have at The Royal Tara,” enthused Jim.
“When you look at the finish it leaves, with the effects of the front and rear rollers, it’s just like we would get with a cylinder mower - if not better!”

New three-year ‘bumper to bumper’ warranties on TYM range
Reesink Turfcare is offering customers even more in 2020 with a new three-year ‘bumper to bumper’ warranty package on all new TYM tractors.
Reesink, the UK distributor of TYM, has long been known for offering more when it comes to its service, after-sales support, parts and warranties and 2020 starts as it means to go on with the brand extending its warranties on all TYM tractors to three years.
Reesink’s TYM sales manager, Steven Haynes, says: “We’re here to offer peace of mind to our customers that when they buy a tractor from us, we cover it for any unforeseen circumstances for three years or until 2,000 hours whichever comes first. These warranties demonstrate our confidence in the product and our dedication to offering our customers more.”
It makes good business sense to ensure your tractor investment is cared for against any unforeseen expensive repair costs, and Reesink is offering protection on the whole tractor at no extra cost.
Compact tractors are ever popular in the turfcare industry due to their multi-functional capabilities, which make them the perfect addition for a busy golf club or sports stadium and TYM tractors in particular are powerful and versatile enough to tackle a wide range of jobs.
From transporting and loading materials, hedge cutting, mowing, scarifying, aerating and various other specialist works including drainage, the wide range which extends from 19 to 100hp
All TYM tractors benefit from powerful, liquid-cooled diesel engines, hydrostatic power-steering for effortless manoeuvrability and a tight turning circle, and a heavyduty, four-wheel-drive front axle for greater traction where needed.
Plus, most can be upgraded with optional heated and air-conditioned cabs for maximum operator comfort. But models without cabs boast a handy feature as well – the ROPS roll bar can be folded down for compact, convenient storage under a low roof. They can also be fitted with an array of attachments such as front-end loaders and backhoes, and the warranty on TYM accessories such as loaders and mid mount mowers remains unchanged at 12 months from point of sale.

Rigby Taylor expertise combine with groundsman’s experience at Grasshoppers
When Rugby Union club Grasshoppers RFC moved into its new and impressive £11 million home in Osterley, West London, head groundsman Mark Woodward knew he had a job on his hands to bring the pitches up to the standard that he and the club were used to.
Explaining that the club’s new facility (on local council-owned derelict land that was formerly a sports ground) was driven by the need to build new schools in the area (three new schools, in fact, as part of the Hounslow Schools Programme), Grasshoppers’ general manager Matt Gilmore says the ‘land swap’ has seen the club lose two grass pitches (now two instead of four) but gain a fullsize 3G surface, which is also used for rugby among other things. All three pitches are floodlit.
Included in Mark’s initiatives was a concerted programme of vertidraining. Following a
timetable of works instructed by the pitch consultant, Mark has also instigated the use of lots of sand –four applications in 14 months of up to 100 tonnes per pitch each time – “to bring the levels up”, he says, followed by generous overseeding with Rigby Taylor’s R140.
Designed for rapid establishment, as well as showing excellent tolerance to wear, cold, shade, disease and drought, for example, R140 is a mixture of perennial rye (Eurosport and Columbine cultivars) and tetraploid perennial
rye (Fabian and Tetragreen) and is treated with Germin-8T which contains a speciality surfactant that is activated when the seed comes into contact with rootzone moisture. This provides effective penetration of water through the seeds’ outer layer (pericorp) into the endosperm, by lowering the surface tension of the surrounding water molecules. Roots can also take advantage of the micronised mycorryhizal fungi that will deliver long-term plant benefits.

Multevo on the road to set new standards
Multevo’s Waterkracht hot water weed control system is an efficient, effective and ecological way of destroying the cellular structure of the target plant. The system has recently been awarded NHSS18, with Multevo becoming the first contractor to be able to deliver hot water weed control service for Highways England.
The Waterkracht hot water weed control system can be used all year and in all weathers, a valuable selling point for those looking to manage estates and amenity spaces.
The ability to choose from a selection of tank sizes also means that customers can tailor the system for their specific site. In terms of health and safety, operators only need to wear safety gloves means that even in high temperatures they can still work, eliminating chemicals means no full body suit.
