Industry bodies release updated statement on 3G pitches

Following discussions between partners and key stakeholders, including the GMA, Sport England, sportscotland, Sport Wales, DCMS, Football Foundation, The FA, RFL, SAPCA and England Rugby, a joint statement has been produced relating to the use of rubber crumb in 3G pitches and the sustainability of artificial grass pitches.

The statement reads: “Artificial grass pitches (AGPs) are recognised as a durable, safe, year-round playing surfaces, able to withstand intensive use and all kinds of weather. The pitches are used for playing multiple sports including football, hockey and rugby and they are an important community resource that mean more people can benefit from the social and health benefits of physical activity.

“However, concerns have been raised about the environmental impact of these pitches. Most commonly this relates to the fibre

loss of microplastics and; in the case of third generation or 3G pitches, the presence of rubber infill, which is also a microplastic. We understand these concerns and are taking them very seriously.

“We are aware of potential developments in the EU following the European Commission’s statement (released in September 2022) which recommended the introduction of a ban on the future sale of ‘intentionally added microplastics’ onto the European market, which includes rubber infill for 3G AGPs. The Commission proposed a six-year transition period before the new restriction becomes effective, although the timing for it to become law has not yet been made clear. Following the UK’s exit from the EU, the regulatory framework for these matters now sits at a UK level (except for Northern Ireland, which will continue to follow EU REACH requirements).

“The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) commissioned an evidence project, under the UK REACH 2022/23 Work Programme, to review emissions of intentionally added microplastics. It will consider the risks they pose to human health and the environment and include a socio-economic assessment. The project will include rubber infill and will inform any future regulatory actions in the UK.

“The Sports Councils –Sport England, Sport Wales, sportscotland, Sport NI – and leading sport bodies are working together and with respective governments to understand what the EU ban will mean for the stock of 3G AGPs in the UK and the timings for any legislative decisions.

“If the EU law on a ban is passed, it will be important to have a transition period because 3G AGPs are in widespread use by

communities across Europe, were costly to put in place, and will be to remove. It is also important to note that there are currently no widely available alternative infill products on the market that are as effective, suitable for all weather conditions and deliver the required performance standards.

“That is why we are also committed to exploring alternative artificial

pitch systems and more sustainable infill products. We will continue to work with partners across the UK and Europe to research and reduce the spread of microplastics into the environment.

“More information will be published as discussions progress.”

BIGGA launches Members’ Choice survey for 2024

The survey offers BIGGA members the opportunity to shape the education that is on offer at the Continue to Learn 2024 education programme, which is due to return in January as part of the BIGGA Turf Management Exhibition.

Planning for Continue to Learn at BTME 2024 is in full force, but we need the help of our members to shape the programme content. We want the learning

to be relevant and to further enhance the knowledge and professionalism that is demanded by greenkeepers and we can only do this by asking our members what they want to see from the Continue to Learn offering.

The Members’ Choice survey can be completed by every greenkeeper member of BIGGA. Prospective topics have been gathered through BIGGA’s

annual Proposal to Present system, where individuals and companies can submit their ideas for future programmes.

The Members’ Choice survey distinguishes the job role of the respondent, thus enabling BIGGA to create programmes suited to their members, wherever they may be on their career journey. The survey will close on Friday 19 May 2023.

Continue to Learn at BTME is the most comprehensive education programme for greenkeeping professionals outside of the USA and attracts in excess of 3,000 attendees each year.

Continue to Learn at BTME 2024 will take place at Harrogate Convention Centre from Sunday 21 to Wednesday 24 January 2024.

ISEKI is hard to beat

at South Beds GC

Tom Hooper, Course Manager at South Beds Golf Club in Luton, claims that his new ISEKI tractor is one of the best he has seen throughout his long and illustrious career.

Tom has been working at the club since 1896 and was appointed Course Manager in 2003. Throughout his tenure he has overseen many course improvements and has seen many technological advancements in terms of equipment. A wide range of equipment has come and gone at South Beds, but there hasn’t been many that has lived up to one of his newest purchases.

“Having experienced using many different tractors throughout my career, I would say ISEKI is one of the best,” said Tom. “It performs so well and is very spacious inside with a good flat floor, no trip hazards and is extremely comfortable.

“We decided to invest in the ISEKI tractor to replace our old tractor, which was very outdated and too large for the golf course.

“It just ticked a lot of boxes for us, including the price, the performance and the lift capacity was ideal because it needs to be able to lift a 400-litre tank.”

Tom purchased the TG6407 IQ which features an ISEKI Stage V, 3 cylinder 40hp diesel engine with IQ Dual-Clutch transmission F24/R24 that offers the control of a manual with the convenience of an automatic. There are 8 clutchless speeds and 3 ranges. Gears are changed by simply moving the gear lever through the straight shift gate. If ‘D’ is selected, then gears 4-8 are operated automatically - ideal for roadwork or towing. TG6407 IQ is available with ROPS or an airconditioned Category 2 cab.

A front loader joystick, draft control, up stop PTO and linkage lift in reverse are all supplied as standard. The tractors are offered with either Ag or Turf tyres as standard. Optional loaders, either standard or with parallel lift are available.

“The IQ gearbox is very effi cient,” continued Tom. “It

is easy to operate, and you can go up and down the gears nice and smoothly.

“We use the tractor for all kinds of work including spraying, vertidraining, and lots of other tasks where we need to attach implements to it. It gives us plenty of horsepower but at the same time it is a nice and compact tractor which can go on all the greens in many different conditions.

“I would recommend it to any golf course or sports ground - its range of use is exceptional. All the staff are very happy with it.”

As well as being pleased with the tractor, Tom was quick to praise ISEKI dealer RT Machinerythe company who he purchased it through.

“We were introduced to RT Machinery a couple of months before we purchased the ISEKI tractor – they were very friendly, very helpful, and easy to get on with.”

Mansfield

Sand

gets the game on

Paul Loader, Site Co-ordinator for Worcestershire FA, believes that MM40 from Mansfield Sand has helped to prevent several games from being cancelled due to bad weather.

An ambitious site move recently signalled Worcestershire FA’s commitment to providing a space for football to develop in the county.

The new state of the art site, situated at Claines Lane, Worcester, now plays host to several local football teams

including Worcester City FC. Paul applied 90 tonnes of MM40 which is sourced directly from the Two Oaks Quarry in Mansfield where the company produces its renowned Mansil range of Silica Sands.

MM40 is a medium sand which is predominantly used in the construction and maintenance of a wide range of sports surfaces. This product was applied in May last year, and Paul has seen the benefits.

Honiton GC upgrades to Wiedemann Terra Spike GXi8 HD

Head greenkeeper, Stuart Broom, at Honiton Golf Club has welcomed a new Wiedenmann Terra Spike GXi8 HD as replacement for his 17-year-old Terra Spike XF.

Honiton’s long-serving XF deep aerator was one of the first ‘extra fast’ models sold in the UK and has done the East Devon club proud.

“It’s been fantastic on our greens for so long,” said Stuart Broom, “It’s done everything we asked, and we opted not to trade it in but let it continue on our walkways.”

The GXi8 HD was bought from local Wiedenmann UK dealer, Masons Kings at Newton Abbott, under the care of Lee Kirk, Turf Area Sales Consultant.

“Buying another Wiedenmann was an easy decision. We just upgraded; it’s a bit quicker, a bit wider and a bit smoother. It will do a brilliant job.

“The 20 cm difference means two extra legs, so more tine holders and a little more productivity.

“Ours is a parkland course, 850 feet above sea level, but very flat, which allows some stunning views. It’s clay-based; quite wet in the winter but the winds are our saviour, drying things up fast.”

Stuart, and his team of five, have an established effective aeration programme which helps keep the quality and consistency of their greens, tees and approaches.

Heathland course on top form with ISEKI

Working hard to restore this beautiful heathland course back to its former glory, Ipswich Golf Club with its 9-hole and 18-hole courses just keeps getting better every year.

The driving force behind all this is Graham Brumpton, Course Manager who has dedicated his last 33 years to developing the course, gradually introducing heathland elements back and managing the woodland areas to allow the natural habitats to thrive. With numerous industry awards for best environmental golf course and conservation greenkeeper, wildlife and environmental concerns are a high priority for the club.

With all these projects and constant renovation, Graham has a team of nine staff to carefully nurture the golf course, and with that workload they require numerous pieces of machinery.

Their previous ISEKI tractor was in need of replacement after over 25 years of hard graft. Another compact tractor with a higher

horse power was required, so following demonstrations with different manufacturers the ISEKI TH5370 ticked all the boxes.

Graham explained; “What sold it for us was the versatility of the tractor, with the 1,200kg lift capacity, loader and 35hp high torque engine. We use the machine for so many jobs on the course include aerating, brushing the fairways and topdressing.

“Another reason we particularly chose the TH5370 was for the width of the tractor itself, we needed a tractor to power the Pro-core and ensure there was no overlap, at 1.3m wide it was perfect for the job.

“Alongside powering the implements it is used for all greens work, towing the trailer to carry bunker sand and divot material around the course, then transporting the greens mowers to each hole. So versatility and operator friendly with very intuitive controls was important as the whole team use the tractor.”

Attraxor is king of the Castle

After Poa annua was disrupting play on the greens at Bothwell Castle Golf Club, the Head Greenkeeper found a solution in BASF’s Attraxor, which was recommended and supplied by Agrovista Amenity.

Alan Boyd is the Head Greenkeeper at Bothwell Castle Golf Club in Lanarkshire - a flat 18-hole parkland course located in the woodland area surrounding the 13th century Bothwell Castle.

Attraxor is a plant growth regulator containing the active substance, prohexadione calcium and can be used to regulate growth of all managed amenity turf.

This active substance inhibits the gibberellic acid pathway, which results in a reduction of turf height and turf biomass. Root growth is promoted whilst

New Reform Metrac H70 is in demand

THC Landscapes have recently taken delivery of their fourth Reform Metrac model in the form of the new hydrostativc drive H70.

For the company Rob Hindmarsh said: “We have found the

performance of all our Reform models, on embankments, reservoirs, water edges and wild flower areas to be second to none.”

Simon Richard, UK Agent for the Reform range adds: “The new Metrac H70 offers

Reform technology at its best, with its special off-road chassis, hydrostatic drive, all-wheel steering system and five different steering modes to ensure maximum manoeuvrability and safety on any slope up to forty fi ve

turf colour and quality are maintained.

Furthermore, using an innovative formulation for fast leaf absorption, the product provides almost instant results, as it is activated once diluted in water. Contrary to other plant growth regulators that need to be activated by the plant enzymes, Attraxor can be used earlier or later in the season during cooler weather.

Alan initially applied Attraxor at a rate of 375 g/ha before increasing it to 800 g/ha and hasn’t looked back.

In addition to supressing the Poa annua seed heads, Alan has reported some other positive findings.

MM60 stands firm for the Rhinos

MM60 grass seed has helped Ryan Golding, Head Groundsperson at Leeds Rhinos, to achieve a consistently good surface all year-round despite it being the busiest ever on record.

As one of the most highly used surfaces in professional sport, it is safe to say that he and his three members of staff have their work cut out.

The pitch at Headingley Stadium had over 100 usages last year which was particularly high due to several Rugby World Cup fixtures taking place. With such heavy and consistent use, a grass seed with a good wear tolerance is essential, and that is why Ryan did his research before choosing MM60.

“We now use MM60 for everything including overseeding,

Versatile Ventrac at The Mere

The Mere Golf Resort & Spa in Knutsford, Cheshire, has joined an ever-burgeoning list of sports and leisure organisations that have purchased a Ventrac all-terrain compact tractor and selection of attachments.

Supplied by local dealer, Cheshire Turf Machinery, the attachments include a Contour deck, a Stump grinder and Turbine blower.

The Championship course holds the reputation as one of the best maintained and highest quality golf courses in the North of

England. John Quinn has been the Course Manager for the past 4 years, after joining the prestigious resort’s greenkeeping team seven years ago. He leads a team of 10 comprising of 8 greenkeepers and two full-time gardeners.

Commenting on the Ventrac he said: “We are a destination resort and we pride ourselves with the visual appearance of the property and the immaculate presentation of the golf course. This Ventrac is probably the best innovation in course maintenance in the past 20 years. It will go almost anywhere

and its versatility is unparalleled. It’s great in wet areas and ticks all the boxes from a health and safety point of view.

“What other machine allows you to switch out a mowing deck and attach a stump grinder, then switch again to blowing leaves? The eight wheels gives it a low centre of gravity, which makes it very safe on slopes, especially around tee banks and bunker surrounds. It’s up there with the best machines I used.”

Trilo transforms cut and collect

Following BCP Council’s declaration of a climate and ecology emergency in 2019, the decision was made to review the management of some green spaces across the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole areas.

With a subsequent reduction in the cutting of some verges and open land, a Trilo S20 with its

large 20m 3 hopper capacity was brought in to increase productivity as the cut and collect operation expanded –taking not just large quantities of meadow grass in its stride but also assisting with leaf clearance during the winter months.

The versatile Trilo S20 was purchased in May 2022 by Simon Woodall, Team Operations Manager for BCP Council and spearhead of a 30-strong team responsible for looking after all aspects of parks and housing grounds maintenance and landscape construction. “Our ecology programme included creating more grass meadows by leaving areas uncut to improve carbon sequestration and increase our biodiversity to support pollinators. We also reduced cutting on other green spaces

such as verges to give plants a chance to fl ower, providing a valuable source of nectar and adding interest and colour to amenity areas” he explains.

“With this change to our cutting operation, we needed a machine that could handle large-scale cut and collect and found the Trilo was a perfect addition to our existing fleet of mountable cut and collect machines.”

The S20 is the largest capacity model in Trilo’s multi-purpose S-Line range which, when fi tted with a fl ail shaft, offers a cutting width of 2.1m and powerful vacuum collection of the clippings to leave a clean finish after every pass.

AS 1000 Ovis RC – simply steep mowing

At the beginning of March, ASMotor started series production of the new remote-controlled tracked flail mower AS 1000 Ovis RC.

True to the motto ‘Simply steep mowing’, the mower convinces with its slope-compatibility, high mowing performance and easy handling and maintenance.

The power of the Vanguard Professional 2-cylinder engine with 23hp maximum output is transmitted directly and with low loss of efficiency to the blade shaft via a belt drive.

The 4-stroke OHV engine with cyclone filter is equipped with a particularly strong crankshaft and has a displacement of 627cm3 at a speed of 3,600rpm. The AS 1000 Ovis RC enables a mowing speed of up to 5km/h and thus an area output of up to 5,000m2/h,

with an excellent cutting pattern and even grass placement across the entire working width.

The 100cm wide flail mower, in combination with the somewhat narrower tracked undercarriage, makes it easy to mow close to the edge and comfortably to within a few centimetres of crash barriers and other obstacles.

Thanks to the flexibly adjustable mowing deck, the new flail mower with tracked undercarriage can be optimally adapted to all terrain conditions. The AS 1000 Ovis RC with its compact design (183cm long, 114cm wide and 69cm high) mows difficult terrain and hard-to-reach areas without any problems thanks to remote control from a safe distance.

VERSATILITY AT ITS FINEST

Here at the Garden of Cosmic Speculation with it’s vast landscapes, sculptures and gardens we are never short of jobs to do. We already have a SXG mower for cutting the lawns and one TXG tractor, so to help with the workload we purchased another TXGS24 23hp subcompact tractor.

“With the front loader and bucket fitted it’s largely used for excavating and landscaping purposes. It’s also used for towing trailers, transporting grass cuttings and leaves for easy disposal. With the two tractors we can run the PTO’s and systems off one trailer and can unload into a trailer attached to the other tractor. If we can attach something to them, then we can use it.

“ISEKI offer exactly what we need, they are reliable, comfortable and safe to use. I would recommend these machines to absolutely anyone.”

More mowing power with Makita

Makita has expanded its 40VMax XGT range with two new selfpropelled XGT lawnmowers.

These much-anticipated products are Makita’s first lawnmowers to join the company’s powerful outdoor XGT collection, with both brushless motor products providing professional landscapers with the flexibility to cover large and dense areas without cords or petrol.

The LM001G and LM002G 40VMax XGT Brushless lawnmowers are powered by Makita’s trusted 40VMax XGT Li-Ion battery technology and have been engineered to provide excellent performance and power, even when mowing in dense grass, with quick acceleration and optimised blade design. Both models benefit from the option to work with two batteries in parallel, so that

when one battery runs out, the system automatically switches to the other. This means that users can continue working without having to stop and replace and recharge batteries when working on large areas.

With a 62L collection box, the LM001G has a 480mm cutting width and offers a no-load speed of up to 3,200rpm. The machine can also be operated in a quieter ‘Noise Reduction’ mode with a no-load speed of 2,500rpm, which is ideal for working in residential and public spaces. The LM002G, with 70L grass box, affords users with a 534mm cutting width with a no-load speed of 2,800rpm, or 2,300rpm in the ‘Noise Reduction’ mode.

Each feature 10 height positions from 20mm at the lowest setting and 100mm at the highest, and both can be operated with a

Profihopper - the professional’s choice

choice of three cutting modes: Normal, Soft No-Load, or Noise Reduction. Other key features include the electric brake, soft start, anti-restart function and constant speed control to ensure ultimate safety whilst delivering excellent results.

The new, durable products are designed for rough terrain with large wheels and high-end steel decks that minimise damage from obstacles and flying debris, as well as IXP4 weather resistant construction. The mowers include a mulching function and a grass level indicator, so operators know when the bag needs emptying. Furthermore, the machines can be easily stored at the end of the day in a compact, vertical position, thanks to the foldable handle design.

Wet or dry grass, long or short, collect or mulch, the PH 1250 and PH 1500 models take it all in their stride. And it’s that flexibility that sets the Profihopper apart from the crowd. The sharpened wing blades on the horizontal SmartCut rotor cleanly cut and shred the grass before conveying it via the cross auger on to that unique second vertical auger to be packed into the collection hopper - meaning less time emptying and more time mowing. To add to that versatility, the sward is rolled after cutting and scarifying comes as standard.

The more than adequate power is provided by engines that are already Stage V Exhaust emission compliant and require no AdBlue.

Don’t compromise - choose the machine that comes with more compaction built-in for maximum work rates and less emptying.

Club invests in Jacobsen Eclipse 360 Hybrid 3WD

New recipients of a Jacobsen Eclipse 360 Hybrid 3WD greens mower are greenkeepers at Bathgate Golf Club.

The West Lothian club is famous for its close links to the Ryder Cup, having produced Ryder Cup captains, Eric Brown and Bernard Gallacher, and a third Ryder Cup player in Stephen Gallacher.

Head greenkeeper, Rab Burns, took delivery of the hydraulicfree ride on mower from Robert Marshall, Area Sales Manager at Scottish dealers, Fairways GM at Inchinnan.

Rab, who has been at the James Braid-designed course since 1995, said that the new arrival would bring extra precision and quality to the tees and greens.

“This is our third successive Eclipse. The others were owned for 5 years and 7 years, so this new one takes us into our 13th year.

“It’s brilliant, just the best cut around and not something we would compromise. We’ve had it out already and it’s fantastic and what we expected.”

When specifying the latest Eclipse, the three-wheel drive

option was vital to help the Bathgate team reach two greens that have machinery access only via a steep incline.

“With two-wheel drive, particularly in the damp or wintertime, it would be tough to get up that slope. In all it runs to about 130 metres, this just makes it effortless.”

Rab, who heads a team of four, moves to a new post at Kingsfield Golf Centre, Linlithgow next month.

Two models in the Dennis E-Series battery-powered range are setting the standard in Italy by maintaining the pitch at the world-famous San Siro stadium.

Giovanni Castelli oversees a team of six groundstaff and is responsible for every pitch operation.

Under his remit, Giovanni also decides on which machinery should be used at the San Siro, and he explained his reasons for choosing the Dennis ES-860 and ES-34R.

The commitment from the San Siro team highlights the significant international success the company is enjoying with the new range and the models continue to evolve. At BTME earlier this year, Dennis also unveiled two new models.

Quiet in operation with ultra-low hand arm vibration, the ES-22 Ultra can help professionals enhance a playing surface.

Very simple to control, variable speeds and clip rates, forward speeds controlled by the operator and easy pull back for accurate alignment of next run.

Using a 7 or 11 bladed cutting cylinder and groomer reel, this 560mm (22”) battery mower provides an ultra-fine finish on golf greens and tees. The tungsten tipped groomer can be in or out dependent on conditions.

The new ES-510 mower is based on the Dennis FT510 – which is, historically, the company’s most popular machine. With a choice of 12 interchangeable cassettes, the ES-510 is capable of scarifying down to -10mm. Ideal for fine

turf it has the power to cut 4-5 bowling greens or approximately 10km on a single charge.

The E-Series features a robust LCD keypad screen which provides the operator with a multitude of information options including speed, clip rate, service checks, lifetime running reports and battery information.

The mowers take just 2-3 hours for an ultra-fast full battery recharge, feature adjustable handlebars, are extremely easy to maintain, the battery pack is removable, maintaining the harpness of the cutting cylinder blades is a simple process and they have very low lifetime costs and significant cost savings on fuel.

STIHL cordless range continues to set new standards

STIHL range of cordless brushcutters includes the RGA 140, the first tool in the STIHL AP System dedicated for use with the STIHL RG cutting head, enabling maintenance workers, landscapers and groundskeepers to cut weeds and grass with ease in sensitive areas.

Taking inspiration from the popular FSA 135 brushcutter and RG gearbox, the new RGA 140 features oscillating disc blades with low rotational energy, enabling low-spin mowing on hard surfaces and around fragile obstacles such as cars or greenhouses. Not only does this reduce the risk of flicking stones but, due to its low spin

mowing and tailored RPM, the new brushcutter also reduces the safety distances to 3m from objects and 5m from people, making the tool ideal for use in built-up areas.

The RGA 140 also boasts a 230mm cutting diameter and ergonomic controls. Featuring a quiet EC motor with three-speed settings and a clear LED display, users can continuously regulate the speed in order to work as efficiently as possible.

In addition, the new brushcutter utilises a bike handle for well-balanced operation, offering comfortable use for professionals, particularly over

Brushcutting made easy at Castle Stuart

James Hutchison is the Head Greenkeeper at Castle Stuart Golf Links, who purchased a Ventrac package that included the 25 hp all-terrain compact tractor unit in its 8-wheel configuration, a Contour deck, a Tough Cut deck and Power Rake.

Commenting specifically on the Tough Cut deck he said, “The Ventrac and Tough Cut deck is an excellent and versatile addition to our machinery fleet. Initially we’ve purchased three attachments, but I’m sure that over time we’ll be adding to this.

“The Tough Cut deck certainly lives up to its name. We’re using it extensively to take out the broom and gorse that has

thrived here over the years. Its rapid growth tends to hide the undulations surrounding the fairways and can obscure the magnificent views over the Moray Firth, which is one of our strong selling points for visiting golfers.

“Some areas of the course are receiving their first cut in three years and it makes short work of a job that was previously done by a team with brushcutters. The combination of the 8-wheel tractor unit and Tough Cut deck feels really safe, especially when I’ve been using it on 30-degree slopes. Specifically designed for mowing high grass, thick weeds and heavy brush, the Tough Cut deck attachment from Ventrac is

ideal for extreme brushcutting on slopes of up to 30 degrees. It will save huge amounts of hours compared to manual brushcutting.”

On the Tough Cut deck a large front opening directs material into the deck where three heavyduty blades counter rotate to cut and deposit waste evenly without windrowing. The blades are sharp on both sides so they can be used on right or left-hand spindles, allowing for extended blade life.

Capable of tackling saplings up to 2.54 mm (1 inch) in diameter, the Tough Cut makes short work out of overgrown thickets. It has three cutting heights: 76 mm, 92

mm and 108 mm. Easy servicing of belts and pulleys is provided by the hinged and removable cover, while the flip-up deck provides easy access for cleaning and changing blades.

Ventrac’s ability to mow difficult areas including slopes, wet areas and retention ponds, ensures that the Tough Cut deck is ideal for landscaping applications and makes previously impossible turf management situations, possible. With out-front mounted couplings unique to Ventrac, the Tough Cut deck and all attachment can we changed in a matter of minutes.

INFINICUT helps preserve the past and secure the future

With one eye on preserving the past and the other on ensuring the site remains fit for the future, Crathes Castle – part of the National Trust for Scotland collection – have invested in a battery-powered cylinder mower from INFINICUT.

Utilising funding from the National Trust, the venue took delivery of a 22” INFINICUT FX last September for the sustainable management of gardens and lawned areas – in a way that brings benefit to the venue and visitors alike.

“We looked at the options available and first of all were amazed at how far the technology has come in the few years since we first looked at electric mowers,” explained James Hannaford, Head Gardener. “What stood out for us with the

INFINICUT was the ease of use, the versatility and the quality of cut.”

James and the team purchased the FX22 with two SMARTCut cassettes – the 7-blade cylinder for lawned areas and 11blade option for a finer cut on the sites croquet lawn. “The finish is excellent and noise has been almost completely eliminated, which is better for our environment and the thousands of visitors we get through the gardens every year. Visitor enjoyment is critical to the success of our venues.”

James says that the utilisation of the INFINICUT has peaked public interest in the more sustainable solutions to turf management. “

Etesia’s Bahia M2E – the world’s first 100% electric professional ride-on-mower with grass collection, is now available with a lithium battery option.

The Etesia Bahia M2EL is powered by a 51.2V, 100Ah lithium battery which enables users to get up to 3hrs 30 mins of action before it needs recharging.

The new lithium option is also 85kgs lighter compared to the older lead acid battery version.

A pocket-size ride-on mower, just 0.82 m wide and 1.98 m long, the Etesia M2EL features an incredibly tight turning circle. It nips into every nook and cranny and can be easily transported.

With its low centre of gravity, the Etesia M2EL 33/67 weight distribution on the front/rear axles make it a highly stable mower that masterfully copes with slopes.

Furthermore, its 240-litre collection box is fed by a wide discharge chute ensuring very good filling of the material.

It is also highly economical – the running costs are £0.35 against £3.57 for the petrol version and there are the obvious reduced maintenance costs – such as no engine belt, no filters, and no engine oil.

Yamaha electric UTVs at Bishop’s Stortford College

Yamaha’s UMX AC light utility vehicles have proved a hit with Adam Smith, the Head of Grounds and Gardens at Bishop’s Stortford College in Hertfordshire.

He and his team now have three of these electricpowered workhorses for estate management duties, while the Catering team have two, which are used for delivering food and beverages to the various houses and to outlying areas of the campus.

The Maintenance team are about to take delivery of their own unit with an enclosed carry box for transporting tools,

cables and other necessary equipment.

“Prior to getting the UMX’s we were using golf buggies adapted with a cargo box and tow bar,” he said, “but they weren’t really fit for purpose; their traction under load was poor and they had limited carrying capacity.

“We demoed most of the competitor machines and Yamaha came out on top.

“They were not the cheapest option, but they were far and away the best, with a good towing capacity, excellent storage in the side boxes and

bonnet, sturdily built and with a very comfortable ride.

“We have three UMX’s for the Grounds and Gardens team and they are excellent workhorses. The carrying capacity is just over 360kg and the aluminium cargo bed is a generous size with a onetouch tailgate latch.

“We also use them as the tow vehicles for our ground-driven sweeper on our two Astroturf pitches.”

STIHL has launched upgraded versions of its popular AP System MSA 160 C-B, MSA 200 C-B, and MSA 220 C-B cordless chainsaws, offering professional users a new streamlined design, improved battery performance, faster cutting and enhanced operational features.

The new MSA 160 C-B is more powerful than the previous version, boasting a larger motor and compatibility with the recommended AP 300 S AP System battery, which ensures an increased electrical output of 1.5 kW for faster cutting performance.

Moreover, the enhanced MSA 220 now comes as standard with a 3/8P pitch, 1.1mm gauge PS3 PRO chain, which improves cutting performance by up to 20% due to its narrower kerf.

The new chain has been specifically designed for use with STIHL’s new Light 04 1.1mm guide bar, allowing more cuts to be made per battery charge.

The MSA 160 C-B and MSA 200 C-B feature a 1/4P chain for smooth and precise cuts.

All three new models have seen numerous upgraded operational features introduced to improve the user experience.

These include improved visibility of the chain oil level for faster checks, a thumb lever and OPC starting switch for increased comfort and safety, as well as a soft rubberised grip and optimally balanced handle position for maximum control and comfort.

In addition, all new models feature quick chain tensioning for fast and tool-less replacement or tensioning of the chain, as well as bayonet style oil tank caps which can be opened quickly and easily while wearing gloves.

All the new saws are compatible with the STIHL Smart Connectors, part of the STIHL Connected fleet management system. Smart Connectors record and transmit the working time of the tool to the user’s smartphone, giving prompts to complete important maintenance tasks exactly when they’re required.
