Redexim revolutionise hybrid renovations
Redexim are pleased to announce the launch of the Scarivator – a new tool, ideal for contractors, that promises to revolutionise the maintenance of hybrid sports pitches.
Recognising the increasing popularity of hybrid systems, the Scarivator has been specifically developed to remove unwanted rootzone material, loosen soil and ensure a smooth, level surface without damaging the synthetic fibres. Hybrid surfaces naturally become compacted over time, which necessitates effective renovation to maintain
performance and longevity. This process now begins with the Scarivator, designed to loosen the uppermost layer of the surface.
Embodying the very best of quality, reliability and Redexim engineering, the Scarivator features two horizontal beams equipped with angled spring tines to work into the surface at adjustable depths of up to 35mm (1.38”). The beams reciprocate each other to agitate and loosen the organic material and soil without the risk of synthetic fibres wrapping around the rotor. The result is an unparalleled renovation solution
that ensures costly replacement and repairs can be avoided, and the lifespan of the system is extended.
The Scarivator comes with a 2.13m working width, infinitely adjustable working depth and adjustable tine angle for varying degrees of aggressiveness. Its streamlined specification is the result of many years of rigorous testing in collaboration with hybrid carpet manufacturers and contractors, especially those in the UK, which now sees the Scarivator as the ultimate maintenance choice not just for hybrid surfaces, but natural turf
forefront of turf management trends and technologies.
Jason Booth, Chief Operating Officer at the Grounds Management Association said: “SALTEX plays an instrumental role in promoting excellence in turf management. The show provides a vital platform for knowledge exchange and professional development within our industry - we are extremely grateful to the NGBs for their continued collaboration and support.”

and the decompaction of heavily worn artificial carpets.
In the field, the Scarivator has proven to be a perfect partner to the Redexim Turf Stripper, loosening the upper profile and allowing the Turf Stripper to extract more of the rootzone from deeper down in a single pass. It is also an effective solution for regular in-season raking, etching away at compaction and pan layers and creating a tilth to optimise the results of natural and hybrid renovations.

Pathway To Playurging the new Government to invest in playgrounds
The Association of Play Industries (API) is calling on the public to support its Pathway to Play campaign by writing to their local MPs, urging the government to invest in public playgrounds in their first Budget on 30 October.
The campaign seeks to address the growing crisis of childhood obesity and mental health issues by ensuring that every child has access to safe, high-quality outdoor play spaces.
The newly elected Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, and key government ministers have already been approached by API Chair Dr. Amanda Gummer, who is advocating for policy changes that will make outdoor play a central aspect of childhood.
Dr Gummer says: “Investing in playgrounds is crucial for reversing the alarming trends in childhood health. Outdoor play is an essential aspect of childhood and public playgrounds are the number one location for children’s outdoor play.
“Policy oversight has led to inadequate provision of dedicated play spaces, resulting in children spending more time indoors, alone and inactive. The new Chancellor will be announcing the first Labour Government Budget on 30 October and it’s imperative that they find room in the budget to protect our children’s right to play in their communities. Urgent change is needed to reverse rising childhood obesity and mental health problems.”
Engagement in training and qualification increases
The Grounds Management Association (GMA), the UK’s leading organisation for the grounds management industry, has seen a 43% rise in uptake of its training compared to this time last year.
This follows a challenging season for many sports. Over the past 12 months, the GMA saw enquiries related to flooding surge, coinciding with increased rainfall that was up 147% on the long-term average in some parts of the country.
In the North East of England, football clubs needing support because of water-logged pitches were up 244%. And 80% of rugby union clubs have had drainage issues this year compared to 50% last year.
Jason Booth, chief operating officer of the GMA, says: “We know last year was a tough season for many. More extreme weather means the challenges in our industry are getting greater. It’s time to focus on knowledge and skills to get ahead of the game so it’s essential clubs invest in their pitches and grounds teams.
“The GMA’s unique suite of training and qualifications are designed to help groundspeople advance their knowledge and skills – including courses specifically geared towards the new challenges faced in winter sports, like football, rugby league and rugby union.
“Our training is designed with the help of industry experts and supported by national governing bodies, including The FA, ECB, RFL and Sport England. We’re also the only industry association to be accredited by the Department of Education’s matrix Standard.
“As well as in person training, there are also plenty of online courses, perfect for busy professionals and volunteers who want to enhance their turf maintenance knowledge from anywhere.
“Grow your knowledge today, head over to our website and check out the training and qualifications we’ve got available.”
Grounds Management Association Enquiry 6
The API has created a template letter for members and supporters to send to their local MPs. The letter highlights the importance of conducting a national audit of playgrounds, securing long-term funding for community play spaces and integrating outdoor learning into schools.
The API urges everyone who cares about children’s wellbeing to download the template letter from the API website, personalise it and send it to their MP before the budget on 30 October. Together, we can ensure that the government recognises the vital role of public playgrounds in building healthier communities.

GroundsFest 2024 - more exhibitors, more visitors, more excitement
The second edition of GroundsFest, held on 10 and 11 September at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire, has firmly established itself as the UK’s largest grounds management and landscaping event.
Following a strong debut in 2023, this year’s show exceeded all expectations, marking a significant milestone in its young history.
With 8,014 visitors across two days — 4,738 on day one and 3,276 on day two - GroundsFest 2024 saw an impressive increase in attendance, a remarkable feat for an event that only launched last year. The expanded event layout immediately immersed visitors in the action, creating an engaging and dynamic atmosphere from the moment they arrived. One of the standout features of this year’s GroundsFest was the introduction of Machinery Nation LIVE, which captivated large crowds with thrilling machinery face-offs. Visitors watched top brands go head-to-head in a series of entertaining and rigorous trials, comparing performance across
categories such as petrol vs. battery, agility, power, and more.
Innovation took centre stage at GroundsFest 2024 as over 60 new products were launched, providing visitors with a firsthand look at the latest in grounds management and landscaping technology. The mix of indoor and outdoor areas also struck a perfect balance. Indoors, a vibrant show floor offered a diverse range of exhibitors showcasing products and services, while the seminar theatres hosted a wealth of educational sessions, all free to attend.
The Landscape Zone, an entire hall dedicated to professionals in the design, planning, and construction of outdoor spaces in the landscaping sector proved to be popular, adding another dimension to the show’s offering.
Grounds Training practical sessions were another highlight, attracting large crowds eager to learn from experienced instructors on the use and maintenance of pedestrian mowers, ride-on mowers, handheld
machinery, and sprayers. Hands-on experience is one of GroundsFest’s key strengths, and attendees once again relished the opportunity to test out equipment before making purchasing decisions.
Beyond the business of grounds management and landscaping, the festival atmosphere of GroundsFest offered a fun way for exhibitors and visitors alike to unwind.
Event Director Christopher Bassett said: “It’s incredible to see how much support GroundsFest has received from every corner of the industry. The growth from last year has been phenomenal, and we’re so grateful to all the exhibitors, visitors, and partners who made this year’s show such a success.
“As we look to the future, we want to continue growing and evolving the show — and the only way to do that is by listening to the industry. That’s why we encourage everyone to take the time to fill out the surveys we’ve sent out.”

Minister backs funding for land-based engineering apprenticeships
In a significant development for the land-based engineering sector, the Secretary of State for Education has officially approved revised funding levels for the standalone level 2 and level 3 apprenticeships.
This landmark decision underscores the commitment to fostering skilled professionals in a crucial industry. The new apprenticeship standards, spearheaded by the Landbased Engineering Training & Education Committee (LE-TEC) Apprenticeship Working Group, have introduced a revised content and structure to the land-based engineering training programmes. Unlike the previous model which offered direct entry to either the
level 2 apprenticeship, or the level 3, which incorporated the level 2, the revised standards offer a distinct pathway; a level 2 apprenticeship which is then followed by the level 3, if required. This approach not only enhances flexibility for employers, but also allows apprentices to advance according to their career aspirations by achieving a level 2 in the first instance and then moving onto the level 3.
A major breakthrough in this initiative is the enhanced level of funding now available. After extensive negotiations and detailed submissions by the LE-TEC Working Group and following further scrutiny of the group’s
comprehensive documentation and calculations, the Secretary of State for Education has remarkably revised the funding bands upwards.
David Kirschner, Independent Consultant to the Land-based Engineering Sector praised the decision as a critical step forward.
“This increase in funding is not just a financial adjustment, it’s a recognition of the value and unique skills provided by the landbased engineering sector. It helps address the urgent need for skilled service technicians and engineers, ensuring the sustainability of apprenticeship programs vital to our industry’s future.”

Club reports impressive results with Maxtima
Following the launch of Maxtima fungicide, which provides turfsafe broad-spectrum disease control of microdochium patch and dollar spot, Nigel Green, Course Manager at Aberdovey Golf Club set within the Snowdonia National Park, has reported fantastic results incorporating it into his programme to control dollar spot this summer.
Founded in 1892, Aberdovey is one of the oldest golf courses in Wales and the home of the Welsh Golfing Union. It regularly features in the Top 100 golf courses in the UK and Ireland and was recently ranked as the 3rd best course in Wales by National Club Golfer.
“At Aberdovey Golf Club, maintaining the health and
playability of our greens is always a top priority, so when signs of Dollar Spot began appearing on the greens and aprons, I knew immediate action was needed. That’s when Maxtima came into play, and I have to say, it has truly delivered,” says Nigel.
“I first used Maxtima when I was given some to trial by BASF. I closely monitored the timing, weather conditions, and every detail of the application process. I applied it at a rate of 1.5 litres per hectare, and within just three to four days, I started noticing the results.
“The Dollar Spot, which had been a growing concern, was effectively stopped in its tracks. The product’s rapid action and efficacy were evident almost immediately, which was incredibly reassuring.
“The mild and dewy mornings we’ve experienced recently have certainly not been ideal for managing turf disease, yet even under these challenging conditions, Maxtima has proven its worth. After seeing the quick impact on the initial areas, I decided to extend the application to two additional greens.
“The results were so impressive that I ultimately treated all of our greens, and I’m pleased to report that Maxtima has successfully stemmed the Dollar Spot across the board.
“Maxtima is absorbed into the leaf really effectively even at low temperatures and continues to work for a long time after application. This means that in addition to its use against dollar spot in the
summer months, it should be a really effective addition to the tools we use to control microdochium patch.
“Given its performance, Maxtima is now a staple in our turf management arsenal. I’ll be applying it as needed, and I’ll always make sure to have some in stock to ensure we’re ready to tackle any future outbreaks.
“The peace of mind that comes from knowing we have a reliable, fast-acting solution like Maxtima on hand is invaluable. I would highly recommend it to any course manager looking for an effective and trustworthy product to keep their greens in top condition.”
Mansfield Sand’s impact at Kibworth
Since becoming Course Manager at Kibworth Golf Club in 2019 Martin Anderson has propelled the course to new heights. A crucial component in Martin’s arsenal?
The superior quality sand products from Mansfield Sand Company, renowned for their performance and reliability.
He explains: “The Mansfield Sand product is a cleaner mixture, which is evident in the soil testing results. It has the potential to significantly improve our playing surfaces.”
At Kibworth, the application of Mansfi eld Sand’s top dressing for greens, tees, and approaches has delivered remarkable results. Martin emphasises the role of top dressing in enhancing speed, trueness, and roll through the greens. “It’s not just about aesthetics,” Martin notes. “The top dressing has massively improved playability
Martin’s praise extends to Mansfield Sand’s bunker sand, essential for maintaining Kibworth’s 52 bunkers. “Our bunkers are well-placed from a playing point of view,” he explains. “Regular top-ups throughout the year, coupled with meticulous maintenance during the preseason, ensure that our bunkers are always in pristine condition.”
Martin’s successful use of Mansfield Sand products at Kibworth Golf Club is a testament to the power of quality products in course maintenance. As Kibworth continues to thrive under his leadership, it’s clear that the right sand makes all the difference in achieving excellence.

Pointing in wet weather is possible with gftk technology
With GftK Paving Jointing Mortar, you can complete the jointing or repointing, and get the job completed on time - mo more wating for dry conditions and a dry forecast.
The advanced technology in the ’State-of-the-Art’, 2ndGeneration, 2-part, epoxy resin based, GftK vdw 815+ and vdw 850+, paving jointing systems from NCC Streetscape, means that you can keep working in wet weather conditions.
There is no concern for residual water in the joints, the GftK selfcompacts and displaces it, no tooling required either. You can even keep working in the rain when you need to get finished.
GftK’s vdw 850plus, and GftK vdw 815plus for narrow joints from just 3mm wide, are ideal for jointing many different types of paving, from domestic patios and driveways, to paving for retail and commercial centres, as well
as for heavily trafficked small format, natural stone setts on public highways and in historic market squares for examples.
These unique products are completely prebatched for ease and control of mixing and use on site; they are high-flow and selfcompacting with no additional finishing required, cleaning is also easy just rinse and clean off with more water. No cement haze from traditional cement-based materials, and no resin bloom, such as from 1st-first generation epoxy paving joint mortars.
GftK vdw 850plus hardens quickly to get areas into, or back into service as quickly as possible, hardening to withstand the toughest installation and service demands.
Clearly the ‘best-in-class’, using GftK vdw 850plus also makes installation much easier, with less limitations on joint dimensions, gives long-term
shrinkage free performance, fully able to withstand high-pressure jet-washing and mechanical street-cleaning machines.

Wet weather urban paving repointing
Longer-term durability increases your works sustainability and budget cost efficiency with GftK’s vdw 850plus paving joint mortars.
The pointing of new paving, and especially for the repointing ‘difficult’ smaller format urban paving, such as stone setts and cobbles used for sections of highways and public spaces like market squares, this is now possible for the long term, even in wet weather, with GftK’s vdw paving joint mortars.
Using the unique and ‘bestin-class’ GftK vdw mortars, also means completion on time and without delays due to the weather, or extended periods of disruption with area closures, and you can say goodbye to expensive annual repointing and repeated costly claims for trips and falls.
This durable long-term, costeffective and sustainable performance is well proven on successfully completed projects all around the UK since 2007.
In all these busy public traffic spaces, the previous, largely cement-based, pointing and repointing materials had failed, despite generally being good
products, with their deterioration and breakdown significant within just a year or two because of the demanding environments.
The biggest problems were the frequently wet-weather conditions during the pointing, plus the joint size variations, which causes big problems for all cement materials. The areas are also then subjected to exposed weathering and frequent vehicular traffic, with multiple heavy trucks, plus extensive deicing salt usage in winter, as well as spillages of ‘all-sorts’, then requiring frequent jet-washing and often the use of mechanical street cleaning machines.
However, all this exposure was and is no problem for the unique GftK vdw 850 paving joint system.
Additionally, these important paving projects could completed on time and on budget, because the jointing works could continue, even in cold, and wet weather, without delays.
These projects all clearly demonstrate GftK is the ideal solution for Local Authorities and their professional teams, to cost effectively refurbish and repoint natural stone paving setts on urban roads and other paved public spaces.

Easy-fit solution for patios and driveways
Marshalls has launched Infinia, a new range that uses the latest in concrete printing technology to create a premium look with easy installation and the durability of traditional concrete.
Harnessing over a decade of innovation, Infinia is a stylish printed concrete paver for both patios and driveways. As it is made from concrete, Infinia can be cut without specialist blades and laid in the same way as ordinary concrete or block paving, according to application.
With its easy installation, Infinia offers important time and laboursaving benefits for landscapers, but it also brings big advantages for the homeowner, particularly in terms of maintenance.
Thanks to its printed surfacecoated design, Infinia has a protective layer that shields the surface from stains, fading from UV light, frost and abrasion. It also protects against the possible risk of effl orescence which is sometimes experienced on the surface of concrete products and provides a slip resistance to an R11 rating.
To give homeowners choice, the Infinia range includes a collection of nine curated designs which can be used independently or together. Each option has a minimum of 16 variations to prevent design repeats and provides a more authentic appearance. The range also benefits from excellent colour consistency between
batches due to its innovative printing technology.
“Traditionally, concrete can be seen as an unattractive, budget option – especially for patios – but Infinia changes the game,” said Alice Turner, Head of Product and Campaign Marketing at Marshalls.
“With nine versatile designs the INIFINIA range offers homeowners a variety of styles to suit their project and taste. At the same time, professionals benefit from easy laying as it can be installed using everyday equipment. It’s truly a win-win for everyone.”

New FSI B31-980 launched
Last year, the FSI B31-749 stump grinder took the arboricultural market by storm, with its 26.5hp engine combined with a compact, manoeuvrable design.
While the B31-749 quickly became a favourite with professionals, FSI listened to industry feedback and recognised the appetite for even more power.
In direct response to this demand, FSI are pleased to introduce the new, higher horsepower, FSI B31-980. Responding to customer feedback has driven the introduction of the FSI B31-980.
Building on the success of the B31-749, the new model retains the same narrow design (74cm), reliable performance, stability and manoeuvrability operators have come to expect from FSI. However, the increase from a 26.5hp to 38hp engine, delivers the additional power users require to quickly and effectively tackle stumps and navigate challenging terrain.
The compact build, combined with counter-rotating tracks and low centre of gravity, optimise manoeuvrability of the FSI B31980 making it ideal for a diverse range of working environments. When navigating tough terrain, or cutting on slopes, the built-in hydraulic motor brakes and counterbalance valve found on the B31 range ensures stability during intensive operations.

Landscaping specialists should promote climate resilience
Brett Landscaping is advising landscape architects to discuss climate resilience measures with homeowners, as insurance companies highlight a rise in claims related to flash flooding.
The firm has been working closely with a number of environmental policy focused organisations, including the Association of SuDS Authorities (ASA), which represents local authorities across England with supporting the delivery of sustainable drainage, to highlight the risk of using nonpermeable systems for home driveways and paved areas. In addition, Brett Landscaping supplied its permeable block paving to a sustainable, climate-resilient garden designed by multi-award-

Users of the hubs can drop off polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) tree shelters from any manufacturer – as part of efforts to improve accessibility, promote recycling, and reduce costs for tree planters and foresters. Its popular range of recyclable tree shelters,
which currently incorporate an average of 35% recycled content, will be showcased on the stand at the event – including shrub shelters and wraps.
Tubex also exhibited its Nature range of biodegradable shelters, which have seen continuous improvements since its launch in 2021. The improvements for the 2024-25 season have been driven by independent research
on on-soil biodegradability and customer feedback, and include increasing the lifetime of the product to 5 years’ service life without compromising biodegradability, doubling the strength of the tubes for better zip tie tightening and an improved fl ared rim to avoid stem abrasion.

GKB delivers the secondary drainage solutions
One of the country’s leading sports construction and maintenance companies has explained why they turn to GKB Machines when it comes to solutions for secondary drainage.
Following the wet winter, Plant and Operations Manager for White Horse Contractors, Mick Cross, predicts a busy season ahead for their pair of Drainmaster’s alongside their GKB Deep Tine Aerator (DTA).
White Horse Contractors were early adopters of GKB equipment, with some machines on their fleet clocking up more than 10 years of reliable service. In addition to two Drainmasters and the DTA, two Combinators and a Rotobrush from GKB form part of a sizeable fleet of equipment, used on projects across the south of the UK by a team of 40+ operatives.
“When it comes to purchasing machinery, two things we look for are time-effective solutions
with White Horse for over 30 years. “The Drainmaster’s tick both of these boxes.”
The 2 or 3 cutting wheels of the GKB Drainmaster are spaced at either 50cm or 1m, creating channels at a depth of up to 23cm which are simultaneously filled with sand to leave a stable surface, with improved, longlasting drainage. “The beauty of this machine is that it conducts multiple operations in one pass, meaning we’re not having to cover the ground multiple times or use multiple machines.”
Together with football pitches from local council up to Premier League level, the Drainmaster has also been put to task on polo grounds and racecourses. “It’s versatility, efficiency and robust build quality makes it ideal for the contractor market” he adds.
“The DTA is very much built in the same vein, giving us a tough and reliable aerator for regular work on elite sports surfaces.” Mick concludes.

Thetford Golf Club – water savings and wash-off
Thetford Golf Club is a free draining course set in a wonderful part of Heathland in East Anglia.
The Breckland Forest where the course is located, winds its way through many variations of trees and heathland, sets the perfect scene for any golfer to enjoy.
After joining the club in the early part of 2024 Course Manager, Matt Perks and the club had ambitious plans to drive the course condition forwards by improving water security resources and irrigation.
Part of this included upgrading the wash facility in the greenkeeper’s facilities. However aware of the impact on the environment that washing off so many machines could have, his and the club’s attention focused to address the issue. Two matters high on the agenda: the conservation of water and obligation to sustainability; and prevent pollution of the ground water ensuring compliance with current Groundwater Regulations.
Matt believed that a new washoff facility with water recycling was the way forward and researched suitable solutions.
A ClearWater wash pad recycling system from Acumen Waste
Services looked to be the ideal solution for the club and a site meeting was arranged. Following this visit by the company, specifications were drawn up and a quotation provided.
Matt wanted to make use of existing concrete in the yard and amend this to ensure budgets could be achieved, this was no problem for ClearWater.
Matthew Mears ClearWaters director explained: “With sustainability being a major factor in business now and multiple machine washing at one time, ClearWater’s 5,000 litre (1320 gallon) capacity with two powerful hoses is more than adequate and also allows sufficient dwell-time for the biological treatment.”
Thetford chose a turnkey package quoted by Acumen ClearWater and all work was carried out within a week schedule.
The club takes their environmental responsibilities seriously and sustainability is key, so is a compliant washpad and water savings became a must.
Matt Perks said: “ClearWater was the best choice after seeing that it could be installed below ground and that we could utilise an existing redundant area.”
ClearWater does provide advantages over other solutions: there’s no noise as the system is below ground, all you will hear is the wash water jet leaving the water guns! Also, the system recycles treated water with very little loss, as the dedicated wash pad with it low curb surround is constructed in such a way as the waste wash water is discharged through grass traps and into the underground tank by gravity for treatment.
Some water loss will occur through evaporation, particularly in hot weather. However, the system is topped up by rainwater falling on the wash pad, so no mains water feed needed. Machinery wash-off for many has clearly demonstrated huge water consumption and wastage for many years at an everincreasing cost, financially and environmentally.
Water has become an increasingly valuable resource. Washpad water recycling is the way forward for those in the turfcare maintenance sector and other business needing wash off. With water savings in excess of 90% achievable.

Following their announcement of an exclusive UK partnership with Hewitt Sportsturf, DrainTalent return to SALTEX to showcase their sustainable, circular soil management system.
The team will be on hand on stand F107 to discuss the benefi ts of balancing moisture content and how their awardwinning system can contribute to high quality surfaces, capable of hosting more play with fewer cancellations. Professional clubs throughout Europe are already experiencing the
difference DrainTalent can make to pitch quality and plant health, with installations at a number of elite venues including FC Utrecht and FC Twente. With their stadium pitch due for renovation, FC Twente opted to invest in an improved drainage system which would enable the club to control and regulate the field conditions in detail.
The answer was DrainTalent Pro – incorporated as part of a hybrid pitch installation during the summer break of 2024. DrainTalent monitors
the moisture within the profi le in real-time to keep the soil conditions balanced, based on the pitch requirements and live weather conditions.
Innovative and unique in its operation, the fully automated DrainTalent system can effectively extract water from the top layer of the pitch during periods of rainfall or reinfi ltrate water when required, to support healthy growth and recovery. In addition to moisture management, DrainTalent can also pull air into the subsoil and through
the profi le to create conditions for vigorous growth and a more stable, hardwearing pitch.
SALTEX will also be the launch platform for a brand-new innovation in undersoil heating technology. DrainTalent’s sister company HeatTalent will be discussing their electric field heating system – a neverbefore-seen concept which utilises renewable electrical energy to improve effi ciency and reduce emissions and dependence on fossil fuels.

Yamaha’s UMX light utility vehicle at college
Yamaha’s UMX AC light utility vehicles have proved a hit with Adam Smith, the Head of Grounds and Gardens at Bishop’s Stortford College in Hertfordshire.
He and his team now have three of these electricpowered workhorses for estate management duties, while the Catering team have two, which are used for delivering food and beverages to the various houses and to outlying areas of the campus.
The Maintenance team have recently taken delivery of their own unit with an enclosed carry
box for transporting tools, cables and other necessary equipment.
“Prior to getting the UMX’s we were using golf buggies adapted with a cargo box and tow bar,” he said, “but they weren’t really fit for purpose; their traction under load was poor and they had limited carrying capacity.
“We demoed most of the competitor machines and Yamaha came out on top. They were not the cheapest option, but they were far and away the best, with a good towing capacity, excellent storage in the side boxes and bonnet,
sturdily built and with a very comfortable ride. We have three UMX’s for the Grounds and Gardens team and they are excellent workhorses carrying leaves, mulch, topdressing, tools and hand mowers around the school estate.
“The carrying capacity is just over 360kg and the aluminium cargo bed is a generous size with a one-touch tailgate latch. Storage is an important consideration, as the team need to keep their smaller tools dry in inclement weather, and the storage space under the bonnet is very good.
“We also use them as the tow vehicles for our ground-driven sweeper on our two Astroturf pitches. At 100 x 70 metres, they are large areas to keep clear of debris, but the UMX’s are certainly up to the task.
“Summing up, they are quiet, which is ideal in a school environment, comfortable, easily maintained, good on artificial surfaces, sturdily constructed, have a very good carrying capacity and the LED headlights are excellent, especially in the winter months. They tick all the boxes!”

Easy transportation with brushless wheelbarrow
Makita has added a new battery powered wheelbarrow to its extensive LXT outdoor power equipment range.
The DCU601 is equipped with an electric lift for even easier loading and unloading.
The DCU601’s electric lift can only be operated on flat ground, where it can elevate from 475mm to 1,020mm in approximately 30 seconds, allowing for the easy transfer of materials to and from vehicles. It has an increased maximum load capacity of 300kg on flat ground (0 – 3 degrees) and 180kg on slopes up to 12 degrees. It has three speed settings of 1.5, 3.5 and 5.0km/h, plus a reverse setting with a speed of 1.0 Km/h.
The machine is powered by two 18V LXT Li-ion batteries, but up to four can be used in series for a longer run time of up to 100 minutes. The machine will automatically switch to the
second pair once the first two batteries have depleted. The DCU601’s rear wheel axle is designed to tilt, to enable the front (driving) wheels to stably touch the ground for reliable driving even on bumpy road surfaces. The guard rails keep materials secure when transported and can be easily lowered below the flat frame by lifting and sliding them, allowing for easy loading and unloading by dragging rather than lifting materials.
Its soft start feature and electric, electromagnetic and hand leveroperated mechanical brakes provide full control over its operation, making the DCU601 incredibly easy to manoeuvre. The wheelbarrow also has a swivel lock feature, providing control over the direction of the machine, as well as its speed. Headlights, taillights, a warning beeper and a level gauge all add up to a safer operation.

Connecting a huge fleet of mowers, compact tractors and high-horsepower machines to the John Deere Operations Center is beginning to enable Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council to optimise its output and maintenance.
A merging of the three authorities five years ago created an enormous, diverse maintenance area of nature habitats, sports pitches, golf courses, verges totalling about 2,500ha of greenspace, including miles of beaches. The fleet comprises hundreds of machines

Each machine syncs with the John Deere Operations Center – a cloudbased platform allowing operators, managers and, with permission, the machinery dealer to access live information about a piece of kit. This includes its exact location, what it’s doing, where it’s been and details about idle time and fuel use, for example.
Simon says that the most useful feature is the tracking features for the entire fleet. “We’ve got teams of three going out in areas working independently of each other across the council area, so if the team leader wants to see where the operators are, they can just look at the app on his phone and find them in an instant,” he said.
BCP has a fleet of 12 John Deere 6R tractors, nine 4066M compact tractors, 20 1580 TerrainCut front rotary mowers, and four X948 Diesel Mowers.

Head greenkeeper’s Christmas present was a Ventrac
Sittingbourne & Milton Regis Golf Club surprised their Head greenkeeper Paul Best in December last year, when he was called down to the maintenance facility on a fictious errand, only to find that he was the recipient of a brand new Ventrac allterrain compact tractor and several attachments.
Although the Ventrac was on his wish-list, machinery procurement at the club normally takes place in the summer, so it was huge surprise when he saw the machine complete with Contour deck, Tough Cut deck and Turbine blower.
The surprise was organised by Steve Bootes, the club’s General Manager: “We’d already sat
Mowers expand Bobcat’s solutions
Bobcat’s latest additions to its Ground Maintenance Equipment (GME) range, means it now offers a selection of four ride-on mowers, a stand-on mower and a walkbehind mower providing a choice of both entry-level commercial and professional models.

attachments for use on the company’s mini-excavators and wheeled and track loaders.
With its compact machines, the extensive line of attachments and the mowers and its rebranded Ryan turf renovation products in the GME range, Bobcat now offers a complete suite of product solutions for gardeners and landscapers to deal with every type of situation from manicuring the finest gardens and lawns to dealing with the
thickest vegetation and areas of undergrowth.
Bobcat’s mower line includes four zero-turn ride-on mowers, the ZT2000, ZT3000, ZT3500 and ZT6000.
Whether you are a contractor or a municipality, Bobcat mowers empower users to get more done in less time, thanks to their superior mowing speed, outstanding manoeuvrability and agility on

down together and drawn up the spec and rational for the purchase. We knew we wanted a machine that provided versatility and could work in wet weather.
“The Ventrac was the obvious choice. The board here were happy to provide the finance to pull the purchase forward from our usual summer machinery upgrading programme, so I went ahead with the order and ‘forgot’ to tell Paul or any of his team.”
Commenting on the Ventrac, Paul said: “It was a really wet season, but we managed to persuade the board that this was the piece of kit we needed going into the winter to enhance the playing surfaces and visual appearance.
“The Ventrac is a single unit, so we’re saving fuel and it can go out without marking the fairways.
“The Tough Cut is brilliant in the deep rough and woodland margins; it takes down brambles and saplings with ease, knocks them down and mulches them. During the main season we use the Contour deck on our tee banks, but during the winter it’s also used on tees, fairways and even approaches.”
General Manager Steve Bootes added: “The Ventrac is an integral part of our course maintenance plan and I’m now being pressured by Paul for a second machine.”

The importance of PPE in the OPE market
Landscaping and other outdoor maintenance professions have occupational hazards.
From working on uneven terrain, flying debris and the frequent use of outdoor power equipment (OPE), the risks to workers are real. That’s why personal protective equipment (PPE) is non-negotiable. Rhys Adams, Milwaukee Tool national sales manager for OPE, said despite the clear risks and regulations, many businesses still need guidance on properly equipping their staff,
who risk serious injuries or longterm health issues if PPE is not worn correctly.
He said without proper gloves, for example, professionals are at risk of cuts, scratches and the adverse effects of prolonged vibrations. These vibrations can negatively impact various parts of the body, including nerves, muscles, tendons and blood vessels. “Excessive use of your hands can potentially lead to conditions such as trigger finger, which causes the finger to lock
or trigger when gripping, and tendonitis - a condition that often occurs in the hands and causes inflammation or irritation of a tendon when overused.
“It’s not just the consequences for your hands; injuries can also lead to loss of time and decreased productivity. To protect against these risks, all industry professionals should wear protective work gloves with reinforced palms for enhanced durability.”
Milwaukee Tool has developed an extensive PPE range that offers a wide variety of gloves to meet your specific needs. From Cut AE gloves to thicker leather gloves, all of which provide comfort and breathability, these gloves allow you to use touch screen devices without having to remove them, thanks to the SMARTSWIPE palm and fingertips technology.
Likewise, hearing protection is equally important for industry professionals, who often use OPE. Noise levels can easily exceed safe limits, causing
irreversible hearing damage, such as tinnitus or hearing loss. This is why hearing protection is nonnegotiable in these environments.
The Milwaukee Tool ear protection range is certified to European hearing protection standards and features ear defenders designed for various trade and industrial applications. The range includes reusable corded ear plugs, foam ear plugs, banded ear plugs and the Milwaukee Tool BOLT EARMUFF - all of which deliver on both noise reduction and usability.
Outdoor professionals also have to endure long hours on their feet, making protective, yet comfortable footwear a top priority. Milwaukee Tool has launched an all-new footwear range suitable for outdoor maintenance professionals. The range includes agile safety trainers and heavy-duty safety boots featuring ENERGY FOAM heel cushioning, STEPRELEASE for easy removal, ROLLCAGE heel stabiliser and a lace pocket to prevent
tripping hazards. Made from water-repellent leather, these boots offer excellent grip and are certified to the highest industry standards.
One essential piece of PPE that almost all industry professionals need is eye protection. To help prevent these injuries, Milwaukee Tool offers a range of safety glasses certified by EN166 and EN170 / EN172.
