Recent innovations with concrete block permeable paving help meet regulatory requirements for sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) while cutting costs and maximising development potential, as summarised in a new guide from Interpave.
By its very nature, concrete block permeable paving is uniquely placed to help meet the multifunctional requirements for SuDS on developments. Its capability to attenuate water flow during rainfall for gradual discharge is well known.
But it also provides a fresh opportunity to meet the need for water retention on site –a key element of any SuDS scheme – without additional land-take. This is achieved by designing with distinct storage
‘compartments’ of permeable paving using straightforward orifice flow controls, that are accessible for observation and adjustment if needed, on the outlets. This enables water storage to be deployed around a site, with flow controls demonstrating compliance to local planning authorities as part of the SuDS design approval process.
Additional storage on valuable land, with associated excavation and construction costs, is avoided and SuDS requirements on high-density urban schemes can be met without expensive storage structures. This approach is also useful for controlling flows to maximise permeable paving storage on sloping sites or to increase treatment times, optimising removal of pollutants within the pavement.
After more than two decades of use, concrete block permeable paving has proved to be a predictable, reliable and lowcost SuDS technique. Of course, it provides the hard surfaces needed on any project – whether for traffic (including HGVs), parking, pedestrians or play –but it also creates an inherent drainage system, addressing both flooding and pollution issues by attenuating and cleaning water runoff at source. Concrete block permeable paving can simply enable infiltration to the ground where conditions allow or, more commonly, collect water for transmission to other SuDS features along the ‘management train’ or to conventional drainage.
The National Planning Policy Framework now requires sustainable drainage (SuDS)
SALTEX 2016’s allencompassing and free-to-attend LEARNING LIVE programme is set to explore what impact leaving the European Union will have on the industry, when the exhibition opens its doors at the NEC, Birmingham on the 2 and 3 November.
Designed to cater to all visitors that maintain or manage pitches, estates, grounds, landscapes, play areas and parks, LEARNING LIVE will play a major role at SALTEX and will offer an extensive information-sharing experience, an incredible line-up of guest speakers and will focus on key issues that surround the industry – Brexit being one of them. In an organised panel debate, the implications of leaving the EU
will be discussed. Professor John Moverley, chairman of the Amenity Forum has been confirmed as a panel member and will seek to specifically address the implications for weed, pest and disease control, as well as the amenity sector as a whole.
Commenting on the debate, John
said: “At this moment in time we are at a very early stage but, as well as posing a challenge, it is a time of opportunity to influence future decision making and represent the sector’s interests. I look forward to a lively debate.” SALTEX Enquiry 2
on new developments of 10 or more dwellings and equivalent non-residential or mixed developments in England. SuDS are also a firm regulatory requirement elsewhere in the UK and local policies spell out what planning authorities expect from sustainable drainage. Designers, developers and local authorities are increasingly making use of concrete block permeable paving as an essential SuDS technique.
The latest developments with SuDS and urban design are summarised in Interpave’s new ‘Hard Landscape Today’ brochure and a video which dramatically demonstrates the performance of concrete block permeable paving.

Should the industry be worried about Brexit? It’s a question that might well have you rolling your eyes after a long summer of uncertainty and confusion from those elected to lead the country.
It has been a farce so far and the Electoral Reform Society’s review of the EU Referendum, which concluded that both sides of the debate were guilty of spreading misinformation and failing to provide clear facts to voters, goes close to summing up the state of our political system at present.
So, should we simply shrug our shoulders and wait for something, anything, to happen?
It is tempting, but by doing so our industry could well miss out on a golden opportunity. There is every possibility that Brexit will provide a chance for us to put the industry front and centre when it comes to politics and decision-making in the future,
Indeed, the Prime Minister at her first Cabinet get-together after the summer break made it clear that as we prepare for Brexit she was looking to identify the opportunities that will exist.
The Construction Industry Council has already taken positive steps to gather together various bodies and stakeholders to ensure that industry is kept fully informed of what Brexit means and also what it could lead to in the future. It is an approach our industry would do well to copy.
The issue of Brexit and what will happen in the future will be on the agenda during the LEARNING LIVE programme at SALTEX 2016 in November. Although that it only two months away, perhaps it is time to start acting now to ensure our industry is not left behind?
We’re entering exhibition season and this month we have a preview of APF2016 alongside Jane Carley’s look at the latest innovations in forestry equipment. Members of the magazine’s team will be attending Four Oaks, GLEE, the Landscape Show and GalaBau in the coming weeks and we hope to see some of you there.
TSP Media will also be exhibiting at SALTEX 2016 again and we’ll have more details next month. We’re looking forward to a busy second half of the year.
Paul Groves EditorSenior figures from the Japanese knotweed remediation industry have called for greater transparency as the UK enters epidemic risk levels.
The invasive plant, whose rapid growth can destroy manmade and natural structures in its path, threatens billions of pounds’ worth of property transactions every year, and many professionals risk lawsuits as well as lost business.
Japanese Knotweed Control, one of the UK’s first specialist remediation companies and a founder member of the Invasive Non-Native Specialists Association (INNSA), is leading a campaign to combat misinformation and to introduce a higher-level national standard for the management of the destructive weed.
David Layland, founder and managing director, explains:
“We’re embarking on a public communications campaign that we’ve nicknamed ‘Gone But Not Forgotten’, because one of the biggest challenges, besides getting rid of the plant itself, is the amount of misinformation and misconceptions that exist in the UK.
“The biggest of these is the myth that once knotweed has been treated, the problem has gone away. In reality, without a proper warranty, insurance and long-term remediation strategy, your knotweed treatment can leave you just as much at risk as when you first spot the distinctive leaves.”
When a herbicide is applied to the plant, it translocates around its extensive root system and stops plant cells from growing. Over time the plant just rots into the soil but until it has completely decomposed, small
The Invasive Non-Native Specialists Association (INNSA) has announced that with effect from 15th August, the Invasive Non-Native Species (INNS) Code of Practice will be known as the Invasives Code.
The Code will continue to be regulated by the independent Property Codes Compliance Board (PCCB).
Chairman of INNSA Mike Clough said: “Renaming the Code is designed to make it much clearer for consumers and businesses exactly what the Code is about. Further it will be easier for the wide range of property professionals that are engaged with our industry to relate to what the Code means for them and their clients.”
The Invasives Code is designed to provide reassurance for
property owners, and the professions and industries that serve them that they can rely on the remediation work of Code subscribers. The Code not only requires subscribers to meet the demanding technical standards set by INNSA, it also sets out minimum warranty and insurance requirements, consumer service levels and complaint handling processes. Code subscribers will have until the end of 2016 to update any materials carrying the INNS Code logo with the new Invasives Code logo.

nodules of viable material may still be present. If the plant is left alone, herbicide is by far the least expensive and a highly effective treatment method.
However, another common problem is that the plant in fact stores nutrients in a maze of roots underground enabling it to hibernate during the winter months. The plant appears dead, but in fact is very much alive and if disturbed, will spread and cross contaminate providing a nasty surprise in the summer.
The UK’s mild, wet winter coupled with this year’s humid summer has encouraged the growth of the plant which can grow up to 40mm per day. It can take less than 0.7g of rhizome (subterranean stem) – no bigger than a fingernail – for an infestation to take hold, resisting domestic weed killers and
growing through bricks, mortar and tarmac in its path.
As many as two thirds of UK mortgage brokers have reported that they have had transactions negatively affected by Japanese knotweed, with many forced to withdraw mortgage applications because of the presence of the invasive plant.
Japanese Knotweed Control is reassuring property owners, estate agents and conveyancers that the presence of knotweed on a property should not affect a sale provided the remediation strategy has the correct warranties and insurance.
David Layland continues, “If you have the right information and back-up from your knotweed professional, such as insurance and warranties, then you should have not only peace of mind but also the legal
guarantee that solicitors and conveyancers are looking for to demonstrate the knotweed issue is under control.”
Japanese Knotweed Control was the first company in the industry to offer an insurance-backed warranty on all its treatment options. All work undertaken is
fully insured and underwritten by Lloyds of London specifically for the treatment of non-native plant species and carries professional indemnity cover for £5 million including structural damage cover.

PrecisionCut ride-on cylinder mower supplied by dealer Tallis Amos Group has been presenting players and spectators at the Brewin Dolphin Cheltenham Cricket Festival with a perfectly mown and presented outfield on Cheltenham College first XI’s pitch.
This annual event, which is organised by Gloucestershire Cricket Club, is the world’s longest running cricket festival on an outfield and has taken place against the picturesque backdrop of Cheltenham College since its inception in 1872.
But it was a programme that put a lot of pressure on Christian
Brain, Cheltenham College’s head groundsman, and his six staff; pressure that has been alleviated with the purchase of the John Deere 7700A mower.
“We can mow only at the end of the day’s play, which can be late in the evening,” says Christian.
“Our previous ride-on was a three-cylinder model and we
always struggled to get round the outfield in the time available, plus it was old and there were breakdown issues.
“The five-cylinder 7700A enables us to mow the area far quicker, within an hour rather than an hour-and-a-half.”
Deere Enquiry 12Management, comments: “With the rapid development of new products in the construction industry, training is key to keeping up-to-speed with the latest advances. The addition of two new e-learning modules will support merchants and contractors in their efforts to manage surface water correctly and sustainably. Each online training course is between five and ten minutes long, aiming to provide a snapshot of information that can be quickly assimilated into individuals’ jobs, either in branch or on-site.
“Both modules are specifically designed to support merchants and installers using ACO products and we take pride in supporting our customers every step of the way, from specification to installation, and the new online courses aim to improve this offering significantly. What’s more, all our online services are free of charge, without any obligation.”

As contractors Southern Groundcare are charged with maintaining different sports surfaces from football pitches to bowling greens and it is for that reason they need machines to match their own versatility.
In the Dakota 410 Turf Tender, Keith Petely, in charge of day-to-day management and company operations for Southern Groundcare, thinks they have got exactly that.
Keith wants to meet the specific needs of each of his customers based in the south of England, ranging from the Southern Electric Premier, Thames Valley, Hampshire Cricket Leagues and Sydenhams Wessex Football League, and has cited the extent of variables on the Dakota 410 as his reason for purchasing the machine.
“We have an Imants ShockWave 155 already and it’s proved very
useful. After having a demo of the Dakota 410 I saw another machine that could do a lot of good for us and how important it would be to the work we do,” he said.
“I wanted our new top dresser to be able to spread more efficiently than the old machine on the varying surfaces we work on.”
The design of the Dakota means that the belt speed, speed of the spinning disks and the thickness of the dressing can all be altered from inside the cab, allowing for a far more concentrated performance.
Keith also pointed out the size of machine as an advantage allowing it to be used on smaller areas in tandem with the other adjustable functions to deliver a refined performance.

The SMARTVibe Vibration cassette from ATT couples a high frequency vibration rate through two rollers, offering an unbeatable method of levelling surfaces.
SMARTVibe vibratory rolling limits the stress on the slow growing plant. It is a clever method of making surfaces acceptable for play and at the same time limiting stress on the slow growing grass plant – it is an excellent solution compared to a hefty roller which could increase compaction.
SMARTVibe has an operating frequency of 83Hz transferred through two 63mm diameter rollers to achieve fast, true
putting surfaces with no chance of corrugation occurring on the surface.
They are a good safe option that can be used in combination with shallow tining to prevent surface sealing. Their use will help true

A scheme to regenerate Portsmouth’s former Kingston Prison into 230 homes has won planning approval from the city’s council.
Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios’ proposal for the iconic Victorian gaol will involve a combination of redevelopment and new build, and features a landscape masterplan by Grant Associates.
Built in 1877, Kingston Prison is a prime example of the ‘panopticon’ radial prison design that found favour in the late 19th century. The idea was that prisoners, housed in radiating cells, could be observed from a central rotunda.
Closed as a prison in 2013, the building’s cell wings, chapel and infirmary will be re-modelled for residential use, with newbuild, low-rise apartment blocks located to the edges of the site. The former prison’s listed walls will be retained and its gatehouse redeveloped, incorporating a café.
The landscape vision for the scheme is a key part of its identity. Grant Associates’ design concept considers the landscape as primarily shared space, bringing residents together and assisting, where appropriate, pedestrian movement through the site.
Adjacent to the existing prison building, a series of enclosed courtyard gardens will be created in response to the strong radial geometry of the site. These gardens will incorporate the commanding presence of the stone-built boundary walls, creating a unique landscape identity for the site inspired by the traditional walled garden.
Rain gardens to be located around the perimeter of the Central Garden Square provide
a catchment for rainwater runoff from paved surfaces and roofs.
Plants tolerant of wet conditions will be used in these areas to create a new wildlife habitat, exploiting the site’s conditions.
Extensive tree planting of various species will help create and frame key views and vistas throughout the site, adding to the landscape character, as well as the ecological and amenity value of the site.
The design team will now commence the post-planning stage for the scheme, which is owned by developer City & Country.
John Dawkins, Associate at Grant Associates, commented: “The landscape strategy is a key aspect to transforming people’s perception of this former prison site, and creating a beautiful setting for residents’ homes.
“Guided by the concept of ‘Living in a Garden’, the strategy emphasises magnificent planting and horticultural excellence within a series of garden ‘rooms’, each with their own character. The different planting communities and groups will provide a rich and stimulating environment for residents and visitors to enjoy across the seasons.
“The planting design also will have a strong wildlife-friendly bias with species selected for their value to wildlife, either through food sources or habitat.”

Highspeed Group is proud to have been awarded the contract to supply and install a ClearWater washpad water recycling system to a golf club wishing to install a new wash facility located within a Scheduled Ancient Monument site. Back in November 2014, Sutton Coldfield golf club discovered they had a problem.
They wished to comply with legislative requirements in relation to washpads and thought that a genuine washpad water recycling system would be ideal. Recycling they knew would save thousands of litres of precious water too. What they could install, the work involved and timescale, they found, was another matter.
The golf course and greenkeeping facility are situated within the Scheduled Ancient Monument area and so a long process of obtaining consent through Historic England was embarked upon, ably managed by Greens Chairman Keith Newman, and after the club decided that a ClearWater system from Highspeed Group satisfied requirements.
In September 2015, after supplying much more information on the ClearWater system and components, together with photographs to demonstrate the impact on surroundings was supplied, Condition A was satisfied. To satisfy Condition B which required work to be monitored by an archaeologist and a detailed plan of works and written scheme of investigation submitted, further detailed information was submitted by the club with the help and assistance of Highspeed Group.
Full approval, as directed by the Secretary of State, followed later and plans made for the complete work to be carried out recently by Highspeed Group’s installation team.
All work was carefully monitored and, as the shot clearly shows, careful consideration was given to the system location as requested. It is totally unobtrusive and safely tucked away in a spot where it is difficult to spot.
Highspeed’s MD David Mears commented; “We are delighted that ClearWater rose to the challenge and ticked all the boxes.

The planting and establishing of trees to create the next generation can often be seen as primarily choosing quantities from a planting list and getting them planted.
Being able to cite numbers of trees planted can be seen as a sign of commitment to enhancing the landscape. However, unless thought is given to the relationship between the trees selected and the users of the environment, and the suitability of these trees to the site constraints, their long-term future can be compromised. A starting point is to identify who
will be using a site. Those within a residential area have different needs to users of retail and industrial, parks and highways.
When these differing requirements interact, careful thinking is needed to achieve a successful outcome. For example, the smaller ornamental trees of private gardens can become insignificant in a highways setting, whereas the substantial specimens of parks and highways can be overpowering within a residential area.

Christmas tree growers can continue to use Roundup ProActive with confidence for over the top spraying this winter, despite recent restrictions to the use of glyphosate.
Glyphosate products formulated with the surfactant Polyoxyethylene tallowamine,(POE-T) will be banned following the EU extension of use for glyphosate, but the unique formulation of Roundup ProActive does not contain POE-T. Roundup
ProActive, (MAPP 17380) has an Extension of Authorisation for Minor Use, (EAMU) for Christmas Trees, and is one of very few products that can be used on this crop for inter-row and overall spraying.
Monsanto Technical Manager Manda Sansom explains: “Roundup products contain glyphosate, which is active as a foliar spray on annual and perennial grasses, broad-leaved weeds and woody weeds, with speed of control increased in
warm, humid weather when the weed is growing strongly.”
“However, Roundup ProActive will still be effective in cool or cold conditions provided the herbicide dries on the leaf and the weed foliage is green and not senescing and there is no rain within four hours of application. This makes it ideal for winter treatment ‘over the top’ whilst conifers are dormant, though the effect will be slower and can take up to a month to show.”

A space-saving automated parking tower for bicycles developed and manufactured in Germany is being launched in the UK.
Parking solutions company Cardok has just secured the UK distributorship for the multistorey Radhaus cycle garage which has been designed by the Nussbaum Group.
The Radhaus tower occupies a surface area of only 55 square metres by just 10.5 metres high, but can park up to 120 bicycles securely, protecting them from vandalism, theft and bad weather.
It can be installed completely above ground or below ground with just the access level above ground.
Cyclists open and lock their individual parking cubicles using
an electronic RFID card. They then slide their bike backwards into the storage box and secure it using a hinged wheel clamp.
To retrieve their bike, users log on to a screen that shows them which of 12 access points to collect it from. The bicycle is then moved automatically from the storage shelf and carried to the ground floor for collection.
Cardok UK’s managing director Nick Child said: “It’s particularly suitable for train stations and other places where lots of cyclists need to park their bikes at the same time. Most transport hubs just have sectioned off areas of flooring for this which takes up a massive amount of space and offers precious little security.”

As a day and boarding school for 300 girls and boys aged 2-18, Abbotsholme School in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire has held a longstanding tradition of promoting maximum participation and providing a competitive sporting environment.
While hockey may have historically been a popular sport amongst pupils, the limitations
of a natural grass pitch had begun to restrict play.
With as many as 150 girls playing hockey every week, staff at Abbotsholme were also keen to find a way to encourage more boys to take up the sport – particularly after realising the limited appeal of natural grass pitches.
Having decided to explore the potential for a brand new
artificial hockey pitch, the school contacted Agripower, one of the UK’’s leading natural and artificial sports surface specialists, and compared a dozen turf samples in a bid to find the most suitable.
The school opted for TigerTurf’s Evo Pro artificial grass – a versatile and durable sanddressed surface which meets FIH National standards and is
established as the UK’s number one choice amongst education and community facilities.
Not only that, but as one of the world’s most widely-accredited multi-sport playing surfaces, Evo Pro would also help the school to offer other sports and activities –such as football and Quicksticks hockey for four- and five-year-olds.

Godfreys will continue to trade as a main homeowner dealer from its premises at Otford Road, Sevenoaks in Kent, along with the Tylers garden equipment trade business that was acquired in June 2015. Godfreys will retain its John Deere homeowner dealer franchise at Sevenoaks.
The majority of Godfreys staff from the Wokingham and Hailsham branches and those directly involved in the
John Deere professional turf business will transfer to the new dealerships. Farol will retain the existing Wokingham premises, while Burden Bros will relocate the Hailsham business to its existing outlets in East Sussex and Kent.

Trentham Golf Club opts for Toro Lynx and Infinity.
Two years ago Trentham Golf Club, near Stoke-on-Trent, came on board as a Toro Total Solutions customer and is now enjoying the complete installation of a Lynx system with 170 Infinity series greens, approaches and surrounds sprinklers.
Lynx is a control system renowned for precise irrigation whatever the unique and changing priorities of the course and it is this that particularly appealed to Ed Stant, course manager, who was instrumental in the club’s decision to ‘go red’.
“The old irrigation was a Toro block system and, despite being 34 years old and in need of updating, we were also looking for a greater degree of accuracy and control,” he says.
“Before, we had to water an entire green at once. Now with independent sprinklers featuring revolving heads and a backto-back set up, irrigating and maintenance can be specific to
the smallest areas and refined to be so much more resourceful.”
The club, together with consultant Roger Davey of Irritech, chose Infinity sprinklers for the greens, green banks and approaches, TR50 sprinklers for the tees and T7s on the practice range tee. And with this combination comes a level of choice the club hasn’t seen before; as well as allowing Ed and his greenkeeping team of seven, to implement plans, which previously would have been a lot to do.
“Getting the most from the course is more achievable now,” says Ed. “When we put fertiliser around bunkers and walk on and off areas for example, we can now water it in automatically, rather than by hand or waiting for the perfect weather forecast. We can also now look to refine the grass species around the greens collars and walk areas that are spoilt by patches of coarse rye grass. This system will help us change these grasses more successfully than previously.”
Ed opted for radio remote control, which he says is “brilliant”, but
he almost didn’t. “We weren’t going to get the radio remote control if I’m honest, it was one of the areas where we thought we might try and cost save. But I am so glad we did, it is great for precise watering during the day.”
Ed concludes by saying: “Overall, although we haven’t been using the system for very long, I can say we were right to hope for and expect a more economical and efficient way of working, the system will certainly show itself to save us time and effort and I don’t think it will be long before savings are seen in terms of the amount of electricity and water used, too.”
Ed also added: “The process of getting this system installed was an important one for the club and I am especially grateful to those who were instrumental in the process. Our consultant Roger Davy and Lely’s Rob Jackson and Rob Green were fantastic, as were the contractor Irrigation Control, especially foreman Rick who had to battle with the most horrific weather imaginable. Special thanks though must go to Trentham Golf Club, who continually strive to invest and improve this wonderful course. Their continued support in me and what we are trying to achieve is very much appreciated

Doug McGeoch, owner of McGeoch’s Gardening Services, is the proud and first new owner of a range of Pellenc battery powered tools on the Isle of Wight.
Over the past two years Etesia UK, the exclusive UK distributor of Pellenc, has reported a dramatic increase in Pellenc sales with over 50 dealers now stocking the battery powered tools.
The popularity of the Pellenc range continues to spread and Doug’s new tools now signals the first of potentially many more sales on the Isle of Wight.
This revolutionary battery can be used to operate any tool from Pellenc’s range of tools and not only can it allow the user to work for a full day on a single charge but it also provides ultimate comfort through the carrying harness which effectively and evenly distributes the weight of the battery.
Aching fingers and joints, headaches and smelly fumes could be a thing of the past as traditional petrol powered tools make way for battery power.
The Bosch range of professional cordless garden tools includes a mobile power unit, brushcutters and a longer-life 36v 9.0Ah weatherproof battery.
All products in the Bosch Professional range share the same concept - powered by Lithium-ion batteries they perform as petrol equivalents but with low noise, low vibrations and savings on running costs. They are also more convenient to use and maintain than petrol models and easy to start up.
Joao Barufi, who leads the Bosch Garden Tools division in the UK. “We’ve now applied our award-winning battery technology across a wide variety of cutting-edge professional tools to complete the range. The convenience and low-vibration of our quiet cordless products, coupled with top-end petrol performance is sure to impress.”
A serious issue for regular users of powered garden equipment is known as White Finger or HAVS
The entire range benefits from low noise emissions with new models quieter than some domestic vacuum cleaners. Not only do they provide peace and quiet when used in public spaces, but also offer higher user comfort; extending the hours in which gardeners can work.
The batteries are weatherresistant and compatible with all products in the range – mowers, hedgecutters, leaf blowers and brushcutters. They feature a fast 42-minute recharge time for the 6.0Ah batteries, and a 64-minute recharge time for the 9.0Ah.
A key addition to the new range is the GEN 230V-1500 Professional Mobile Power unit which provides off-grid power for all-day working. The unit has twin AC sockets and allows for simultaneous charging of 2 batteries, or direct running of 2 electrical appliances. An LCD display presents real-time status information and enables the user to manage remaining “tank” capacity.
Doug purchased his Pellenc equipment through the island’s Pellenc dealer, C&O Tractors, and his impressive range of products includes the Excelion 2000 brushcutter, powered by his 1100 Ultra Lithium battery.
“A big selling point for me is that one battery has a lifespan which is the equivalent of using 4,500 litres of petrol,” he explains. “So even though it was quite a bit of money upfront to buy the battery, it’s still a lot cheaper than the amount of petrol I’d be using. It’s definitely far more cost effective in the long run. I think that green technology is the future and the idea is to stop using our hand held petrol equipment completely.”

Husqvarna Enquiry 62Specialist hire company, Acacia Groundcare Equipment Rental, has praised the Etesia Attila ride-on brushcutter.
Acacia has clients across the whole of the South East. Ninety per cent of its business is with commercial users ranging from landscape contractors, to housing associations, schools and National Trust properties. The remainder is with large property owners.
Mowers and brush cutting machinery are an important part of the firm’s wide range of machinery for hire. Seasonal demand is high and growing, and from the day Ritain Patel and his business partner Dale Hudson set the business up, each having had years of experience in the hire industry, Etesia was their manufacturer of choice for grass cutting machinery.
“They are highly durable and don’t let anybody down. Repairs are minimal, so our workshop costs are low. They last and are good earners. We get at least three years of hard work out of our Etesia mowers,” says Ritain.
Acacia has a tried and tested relationship with Matthew
Clark, proprietor of South East Groundcare Machinery, from whom they will take advice on machine usage and maintenance. The company also has a very strict workshop system in place, whereby every machine gets a complete check when returned from hire. A full inspection, no ifs or buts, is how Ritain describes it.
“Many of the contractors we supply use our services to fill a vital gap in their machinery needs as jobs come and go. They may have a fleet of machines of their own, but there is always a need for others, often for additional tasks,” he says.
“Fixed monthly outlay for machine hire is attractive to school bursars for example, who need to control budgets tightly. Safeguards by way of servicing and instant replacement for repair tick boxes for many a client too.
As well as the Attila brushcutters, other Etesia machines owned by Acacia for hire include Hydro 80 ride-on cut and collect mowers, a 124D ride-on mower and range of pedestrian mowers.
Etesia Enquiry 63The softly padded carrying system distributes the weight of the engine ergonomically over the user’s shoulders and hips, and a flexible coupling between the engine and tool’s shaft makes the
brushcutter more manouevrable, even when working uphill.
STIHL has even set a tool bag into the backpack’s support frame so accessories like extra cutting tools are ready to hand.
It is equipped with the M-Tronic electronic engine management system as standard. M-Tronic precisely regulates the ignition timing and fuel mix in every machine operating state, optimizing performance and efficiency even at changing temperatures and altitudes or when running on varying fuel grades.

The SRM-420TES from ECHO’s high torque range, designed and built exclusively for professional operators it utilises multiple technologies to enhance user productivity and comfort.
With a 1:2.07 gear reduction ratio, the SRM-420TES’s high torque gearbox spins the cutting head one-and-a-quarter turns per engine cycle and delivers 50% more torque than its predecessor. This extra torque means that, when fitted with heavier line, the brushcutter can make short work of even dense bramble or brush without losing head speed.
The cutting head on the 420TES has been upgraded too. Now with an extra 7.6cm of cutting radius, operators can cut wider swathes, reducing the number of passes required to complete the job at hand. Coupled with ECHO’s ‘Tap & Go’ quick line release system, the SRM-420TES can quickly
work through larger areas with few stops to load new line.
The 420TES benefits from a new engine design. Now stage 2 emission compliant, the 41.5cc engine boasts a power output of 1.78kW, over 10% more than its predecessor. Engine performance has been further enhanced thanks to a new air filter design.
Positioned at the rear of the machine, away from flying dirt and debris, filtration has been greatly improved, allowing for smooth and efficient engine performance. Access to the filter is tool-free and the cover can be removed and fitted by hand, even when the operator is wearing work gloves.
A newly designed quick hook-up and release harness is features on this U handle brushcutter. This allows the operator to easily detach themselves from the machine quickly should the need arise.

Adam Grantham grounds manager for Reading FC, believes that Limagrain’s MM60 grass seed has helped him achieve a pitch which can stand up to the rigours of a multitude of both rugby and football games.
The Madejski Stadium is home of Reading FC, who ply their trade in the Football League Championship, and also the rugby union club London Irish. With Reading playing 23 league games at home, as well as cup competitions, in addition to London Irish fixtures, the stadium sees more action than most.
“Quite often we will get a ‘double whammy’ with Reading playing on a Saturday afternoon and the London Irish playing rugby on a Sunday. If there is a midweek game, which is quite often on a Tuesday, then you
can have three games in just four days. It can prove to be difficult with such a congested fixture list and the main challenge are the scrum areas. These can take their toll especially when the weather is against us but fortunately we’ve got a strong and sturdy pitch, which is easily repaired. It also plays really well,” says Adam.
This is in part thanks to Limagrain’s MM60 grass seed which is renowned for producing an excellent playing surface in a stadium environment. The MM60 grass seed is a 100% Ryegrass formula which is perfect for renovation and divot repair – making Adam’s job that much easier when it comes to the scrum areas. Renowned for its extremely fast germination; MM60 has a high disease resistance giving fantastic aesthetic qualities.
The new and improved MM60 also has the added benefit of being treated with Headstart GOLD, which is a further development of the wellrecognised Headstart treatment.
Developed using the latest scientific findings and field
experience, it is a natural revolutionary grass seed treatment that ensures rapid germination and is perfect for enhancing performance on grass seed coatings for sports fields, golf courses, lawns and amenity turf.

When Richard Mullen arrived at Banchory Golf Club as Course Manager in June 2015 he was met by bare greens. But he immediately knew what to do –overseed with Rigby Taylor’s R9 perennial ryegrass.
“I’d used R9 before, and knew about the seed’s leaf quality and its ability to recover quickly,” he says. “But now I also needed a very speedy growth response to overcome a disastrous situation.”
Sowed in August/September during a few weeks of “agreeable” temperatures, complemented by a thorough irrigation programme, R9 responded magnificently, says Richard, on a course characterised by Highland Bents and poa.
“There was fantastic germination within just 7-9 days – the growth was easy to see since the greens were so bare! We never looked back.”
And that success, he adds, was no surprise, based on his past experience with the seed when R9’s fine leaf quality and quick recovery were obvious.
R9 is a 100 per cent fine ryegrass and part of the ‘iCON’ programme of seeds from Rigby Taylor, the company at the forefront of supplying innovative products for the successful management and maintenance of turf surfaces.
It is one of a comprehensive portfolio of Rigby Taylor seeds
which reduce mowing frequency but offer a host of advanced and unique specialised characteristics for high tolerance to wear, and drought and disease tolerance, for example.
With 25 years’ greenkeeping experience, most recently 10 years as head greenkeeper at Meldrum House Country Hotel & Golf Club near Aberdeen, 41-year-old Richard joined Banchory Golf Club, an 18-hole, par 69 course sited alongside the River Dee in Aberdeenshire, in June 2015.
Now, following the success of R9, Richard plans to regularly overseed with the perennial ryegrass, to gradually replace the bents – and the poa – and
achieve immaculate greens that are playable in any weather and at all times of the year.

An intelligent frost-protection system from Gaia Climate Systems has been installed under the driveway of a luxury home in the centre of London.
Gaia’s DEVI DTCE-30 frost protection cables, mounted on D49 wire mesh, were installed.
The special twin-conductor electric cable produces 30W of heat per linear metre to raise the surface temperature of the pavement sufficiently to melt ice or prevent standing water from freezing. Especially useful on steeply-sloping surfaces, the system is invaluable for maintaining pedestrian safety and preventing vehicles from skidding or getting stuck.
The DEVI cables can be arranged either in linear runs or made up into mats, depending on the application. Linear elements are often used to prevent snow build-up on roofs and in guttering and downpipes while mats are ideal under pavements and drives. Besides ensuring a safe surface on which to walk or drive, the preventative advantages of the Gaia system mean that snow shovelling and salting becomes unnecessary.
Here, the DEVI heating cables were simply bedded in a layer of sand and fixed using DEVIfast fitting bands before the block paving was laid in the conventional manner.

The breathable sealant, unlike many others on the market, can be applied as soon as the stone is laid, allowing the stone to retain its natural strength. What’s more, after application the sealer takes just two hours to become touch dry.
Designed to act against the main causes of degradation, Pavetuf Sheen Sealer forms a barrier on the treated surface.
Unlike other products on the market, it’s created to be a slight film forming impregnating treatment, meaning the surface remains permeable to air, water and vapor. Therefore, the sealer will not trap any naturally occurring efflorescence that rises up to the surface of the stone and allows for any resulting salt marks to be simply washed away.
The Pavetuf range is designed to offer high quality installation, maintenance and protection products for all hard landscaping needs.
The collection now includes three sealants; a variety of cleaning products, including General Cleaner, Deep Cleaner, Rust Remover and Green-Off Cleaner; a Salt Eraser that removes efflorescence and prevents its reappearance; a high quality, Sand Crete sealer that also acts as a joint hardener, protecting against sand loss, weed growth and staining; and a Jointing Mortar and Jointing Compound.
As well as Priming Slurry designed to create an exceptional bond between the mortar base and stone or porcelain paving. What’s more, Natural Paving Products has recently added a Pavetuf Squeegee ideal for applying Pavetuf Jointing Mortar and Pavetuf Jointing Compound and two specialist Pavetuf Blades to cut porcelain and sandstone to its collection.

The grounds maintenance division of Cambridgeshire’s Bradgate Fencing has reported fantastic client feedback since putting its new Toro LT-F3000 triple flail mower to the test.
Maintaining the amenity and sports facilities of schools primarily in the Peterborough, Huntingdon, Cambridge and St Neots areas, the family-run business saw the new mower arrive on site in May.
Highly productive and versatile, the recently released heavyduty LT-F3000 is designed to endure the challenges of reduced frequency mowing cycles, delivering the perfect cut in a
multitude of different conditions and environments.
Joining two other competitor brand machines at Bradgate Fencing, company director Richard Bradley explains why he opted for Toro this time around.
“We knew that the reputation of Toro was unrivalled, and when we found out about this new model, we knew it was perfect for what we were after. We wanted a reliable and durable machine that’s able to cut longer grass in wet conditions, and the LT-F3000 does a fantastic job,” he says.
While the LT-F3000’s flail design results in a superior after-
cut appearance in longer grass lengths, Richard also notes that using his new Toro results in a significant reduction of grass clippings ‘clumping’.
He explains: “While our other machines leave clumps of grass everywhere, the Toro doesn’t clog up with grass cuttings and leaves the grass evenly spread, which gives a much neater end result.
“Schools usually request that their grounds are cut every ten days, rather than weekly in order to cut costs. But with our previous machines this had to be done weekly because of how much mess they left. The new Toro allows us to cut
Cheltenham Town Football Club head groundsman, Matt Utteridge, has purchased an Air2G2 GT Air Inject from Campey Turf Care Systems, to relieve compaction on the Whaddon Road pitch.
Matt has been a greenkeeper for the last 20-years and has only
been in his role at Cheltenham Town FC for six months, with every ounce of his vast turf knowledge needed across both sites, he knew there were some damper areas of the stadium pitch that needed addressing.
“We used to have a VertiDrain and a tractor, but because Whaddon Road had a tendency to be a bit wet I became very restricted on when I was able to use it, which was made even more difficult by time restraints,” he explained. “So, the Air2G2 really did fit the bill in that respect, because I can take it out regularly, and even if the pitch is a little soft you can still get out there and use it, which for me was really important. We wanted to tackle some of the damper
areas of the pitch and relieve any compaction that might be causing it, and the machine has done a great job of that.”
The decompaction that Matt has seen work so well comes from the machine injecting compressed air directly into the root zone through the three probes.
Depending on the fittings the air can go either 7” or 12” deep, spreading horizontally and vertically over five-foot.
This produces a fracturing effect in the compacted root zone, with no surface disruption.
every 10 days now, so is much more efficient.”
And it seems the schools in the area are pleased too. Richard says: “The schools have really noticed a difference in the quality of the cut, with one actually requesting we use the Toro for our next scheduled cut once they’d seen what it was capable of!”
In addition to having happy clients, Richard says his fourstrong grounds team, headed up by grounds manager Mitzi Barrett, are also pleased; not just with the end results, but also with the ease of maintenance.
Toro Enquiry 89There are many reasons to top dress, it all depends on the individual circumstances of the soil make up and type of grass –to name just two variants.
The general results, though, are to cover freshly sown seed to allow it to make contact with soil and provide insulation to maximise germination rates, or to stimulate new root and shoot growth to make for an improved existing sward.
Applications of top dressings help to produce firm fast surfaces and also assist in the breaking down of any thatch. The Redexim Rink range from Charterhouse Turf Machinery includes both
broadcast topdressers, that use spinning discs, to models that ‘drop’ the material - all of which come with a variety of spreading widths and a range of sizes.
One broadcast model worth particular note in the Rink DS800, which is available in both trailed and mounted formats. The DS800 Top dresser is a compact unit at 2.40 metres long with a 0.8 cubic metre hopper capacity with the benefit of a hydraulic rear door as standard - the shallow configuration of the hopper preventing material ‘bridging’ or sticking. It can offer a spreading width of up to 12m and thickness of up to 15mm. It
can be used for spreading smallgrained, loose material, such as sand, small granular material or similar products. It is suitable for use behind either a 30hp compact tractor, mounted on a John Deere Progator or Toro Workman truck and has a working speed up to 19mph.
Over at Stornoway Golf Club on the Isle of Lewis, they’ve recently invested in a Rink DS800 to mount on their John Deere Progator, as well as a Redexim Speed Seed.
Head greenkeeper Alasdair Macleod said: “Until these purchases, seeding and topdressing was done manually which was a timely exercise with just myself and one other on my team. The Rink is easy to use and more importantly we can now cover all the greens and get the job done with just two passes. Having this machine frees up our time and will allow us to conduct the work more frequently.”

Highspeed Group has just made legal compliance that much easier and certainly less expensive with their latest promotion celebrating ClearWater’s 14th year!
Ever aware that many washing vehicles and machines wish to be compliant but worry about the cost, Highspeed has announced £750 worth of savings when buying a ClearWater system.
Highspeed’s continual development of ClearWater and their desire to offer quality at competitive prices has ensured
cost savings but certainly not cost-cutting. This is exemplified in the impressive “supplied as standard” kit list that includes items often not seen on other products or listed as extras.
Free first year microbes are included now, along with free crash barrier (for hose mounts), free upgrade to the new fully galvanized grass and silt trap and a free clippings barrow. Two hoses fitted with high pressure wash guns are standard too (each supplied by its own high power stainless steel pump), as is an oil
alarm and auto shut-off valve to protect the treated water.
Highspeed’s MD David Mears said: “With self-install and tax savings under the ECA scheme, it is not unreasonable for a ClearWater customer to be able to see savings on the whole project of £6000 - £8000. This, on top of the £750 worth of savings with our offer, means washpad water recycling with ClearWater is truly the most affordable way to compliance.”

When their existing tractor was nearing the end of its useful life Dave Holmes of Deeping Rangers Football Club knew to whom they should turn for advice regarding a replacement – Glen Bellamy of Fentons of Bourne.
Rather than sell them one, Glen persuaded the club to have a 35hp Branson 3625h on trial before making a decision.
The groundsman Dave Holmes and the Treasurer Kevin Davenport were so impressed, they bought it.
Having always used a 30hp machine Dave was unsure about a slightly bigger tractor as specified by the FA – but is now convinced
that it was the right choice. Dave thoroughly researched all the tractors currently available and sounded out other owners of Branson Tractors.
Using it with a Wessex mower on the four pitches Dave is impressed with the power from the 3 cylinder 1741cc diesel engine, the hydrostatic transmission and the front axle 52° turn angle plus its stability with a bucket on the front. He concludes “This is a cracking tractor, great value for money plus excellent advice and after sales service from Glen at Fentons of Bourne.”

London Stadium 185, the company in charge of managing the Stadium at London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, has welcomed four new Toro machines to its fleet, as the muchloved venue permanently reopens.
A subsidiary of VINCI Stadium, the operating company saw the new Toros delivered in early June this year; around the same time London Stadium officially re-opened.
With lots of activity going on, Greg Bolton, Head Groundsman at London Stadium 185, says he’s been busy putting his new Toro Reelmaster 3100 mower, Multi Pro 1750 sprayer, ProCore 648 aerator and Workman GTX utility vehicle to good use.
Working around what’s been a big transitional phase at the Stadium, Greg and his team of three groundsmen have two grass pitches to maintain; a community pitch with a running track outside the stadium and the main pitch inside the stadium.
“When I joined the company it was still a building site and the pitches weren’t able to be seeded until June, after we’d hosted a
big AC/DC concert,” says Greg, who joined London Stadium 185 in April this year.
“At the end of July we then hosted the London Anniversary Games, which saw the likes of Usain Bolt training here in preparation for the Rio Olympic Games 2016. And then we had West Ham’s UEFA Europa League qualifying round in August. So there’s been plenty to prepare for!” he adds.
Of all the machines, Greg says
the Multi Pro has particularly impressed him: “It’s easy to use, speedy to spray and offers fantastic flexibility. We use it for spraying a multitude of chemicals and there have been no issues with it blocking up,” he notes.
“The ProCore is also great and a machine that I’ve actually used before in previous roles,” adds Greg, whose groundsman career has seen him work at Fulham Football Club’s Craven Cottage and Reading Football Club’s
Madejski Stadium. “I’ve used the ProCore at the last three venues I’ve worked at. It’s a simple-to-use machine that’s equally effective for spot areas and the entire pitch.”
As the only venue in the UK able to host both world class football and athletics events, Greg and his team have a big job on their hands, but one that’s been made both quicker and easier with the help of Toro.

A genuine advance in forestry’s heavy-duty chainsaw class, the STIHL MS 661 C-M chainsaw is the world’s lightest 90cc class 5.4kW rated chainsaw available today.
With more power and efficiency than its predecessor (the MS 660 chainsaw), and packed with advances that make it truly steadfast at work, the new MS 661 C-M is an outstanding performer at the top of the class.
Compared to its predecessor MS 660 chainsaw, the new STIHL MS 661 C-M delivers more power and torque across its working speed range, giving foresters just what they need for heavy-duty work. The advanced 2-MIX engine and self-tuning M-Tronic technology ensure optimised performance day in and day out, with emissions cut by up to 70 per cent and fuel consumption by up to 20 per cent. The improved fuel efficiency plus increased fuel and oil tank capacities, mean work can continue for longer without interruption.
STIHL knows that it is not just power that counts when a chainsaw is harvesting big
timber, but also ease of handling and every gram of weight. That is why it uses components like a stainless steel muffler on the new model – minimising weight without compromising the STIHL quality standard. The result is the chainsaw’s impressively low 7.4 kg weight; indeed it is the lightest professional grade chainsaw in its displacement class rated at 5.4kW.
Minimising weight further, the MS 661 C-M chainsaw comes with a Rollomatic ES Light guide bar as standard in the 71cm / 28” configuration.
Maintaining efficiency of the cutting attachments through seriously hard-working use, a new oil pump system allows greater user adjustment of the chain oil delivery rate.
Easy to use and also to maintain, the new model’s M-Tronic technology makes manual carburettor adjustments a thing of the past; the engine is selftuning and thus saves even the most skilled users valuable time.
There’s a great selection of forestry equipment which can help land managers get the best out of amenity woodland or offer extra opportunities for contractors. Lighter and more powerful chainsaws and efficient chippers which can work in demanding terrain are top of the shopping list, but also consider firewood processing equipment for a useful source of income, and specialist power units and materials handlers which could be used for a multitude of tasks.
The Makita stand will feature the new EA3500 chainsaw powered by environmentally friendly, 35cc two-stroke motor that delivers 2.3hp with high torque. Designed to be compact and lightweight, the complete machine weighs in at just 4.9kg. A two-stage air filter system protects the engine, provides long service life and simple tool-less air filter cleaning.
These Makita chainsaws are fitted with catalytic exhaust converters to meet the toughest European exhaust emission standards.
Chainsaws are available with either 35cm bar length with tool-less chain tensioning system, or with 35cm or 40cm bar with traditional lateral chain tensioning system. Both machines feature the Makita M2M vibration damping system which effectively isolates the motor and drive from the chassis and handles to substantially reduce the transmission of vibration to the operator’s handgrip controls.
Makita’s high power farmingclass EA3601F 35.2cc chainsaw will also be on display. This two-stroke machine develops 2.4hp and with a Stratified Air Scavenging combustion system is said to have the cleanest possible exhaust emissions and very low fuel consumption.
Makita
The centrifugal air cleaner enhances intake performance and reliability and the spring assisted recoil starter reduces cord pull. A primer pump makes hot or cold starting easy while an anti-icing valve bleeds warm air to the fuel lines to ensure winter reliability.
This Makita chainsaw is said to be well balanced and compact weighing just 4.2kg and is fitted with a 35cm long bar and 3/8th pitch, 0.050” gauge multi-link chain and has a 0.26L chain oil tank with automatic oiling.
Chain tension adjustment can be carried out swiftly with the tool-less system while the chain brake can be engaged manually and automatically on kickback. This saw has ultra-low vibrations thanks to the Makita M2M vibration dampening mountings that effectively separates the engine and drive system from the chassis and operator handle
Various models featuring Makita’s twin-battery power system, utilising two 18v Lithium-Ion
batteries in combination to deliver 36v power, will also be exhibited. This system is being increasingly used in the expanding range of Makita grounds maintenance, landscaping and gardening tools. Two 18v batteries are directly installed on the machines to supply energy to the powerful 36v DC motor.
Members of DART – Disaster Arborist Response Team – will be demonstrating the chainsaws on the stand. DART was formed whilst carrying out disaster relief work in the Philippines in the immediate aftermath of typhoon Haiyan in 2013. Both machines are fitted with GreenMech’s patented Disc Blade system giving up to 150 hours of chipping before requiring re-sharpening and the electronically controlled ‘NoStress’ feed system.
Timberwolf introduces the new TW 280TFTR 8in tracked chipper, which replaces the TW 190TFTR 7.5in model.
It features an extra-wide feed funnel and open top section to provide better visibility and ease of feeding. The chipper has a wider in-feed aperture at 280mm x 200mm), designed to reduce snedding and provide maximum results with minimum effort.
Power is supplied by a Kubota four-cylinder turbo charged diesel engine delivering 45hp. A low vibration and
ergonomically designed ride-on platform increases operator comfort and safety. Travel is via a two-speed tracking system, with a low gear speed to negotiate difficult terrain and a higher gear speed to cover distances efficiently.
Both speeds are infinitely variable via a conveniently mounted engine throttle.
Ground clearance has been increased to 245mm to tackle uneven surfaces, with smooth running tracks and a low centre of gravity to enhance stability on different gradients. Proven
features include Timberwolf’s no-stress auto-feed control for smooth operation, combined with a heavier rotor giving added inertia. In-feed controls are conveniently located on either side of the hopper, enhancing the safety for the user, says Timberwolf.
The TW289 TFTR is also equipped with Timberwolf’s double cuts per revolution technology and reversible hollow ground design blades to deliver maximum chipping performance.
The machine has a strategically designed access panel for easier
removal of blades and remote central greasing point for easy greasing of rotor bearings and feed rollers making life easier for operators.
Versatile range Först will be exhibiting at the show with its range of woodchippers.
New additions to the range of 15cm (6in) capacity machines include the PT6, a premium machine developed specifically for contractors, arborists, landscapers and farmers. The PT6 is a robust and powerful pto-driven woodchipper that has its own hydraulic system and reservoir.
Loxston
a 200mm branch or 400mm stump with one pass, forestry mulcher and a flail deck.
H2
Operated by way of multichannel radio with a range of up to 300m and designed for mowing and maintenance of vegetation on precipitous slopes, parks, roadside verges and railway embankments, they offer reduced risk of injury to operators.
Loxston Enquiry 124
Loxston became UK distributor for the Irus product range we have seen tremendous interest and demand. Track options include rubber, rubber with metal inserts and spiked while attachment options are stump grinder, capable of mulching
Connectivity to a tractor’s trailer light sockets provides electrical power to the Autointelligence Control system, which operates the ‘no stress’ function fitted as standard to the machine.
Another innovation is the XR8 Traxion, developed specifically for rail contractors and arborists that need to tackle embankments and difficult terrains.
The XR8 Traxion has been designed to traverse banks and slopes up to 35 degrees. It features a parallel linkage leg system that allows users to expand and retract legs independently for safe and stable tracking on the bankside, as well as ground clearance of 695mm when fully expanded to negotiate difficult obstacles.
Powered by a 50hp, fourcylinder Kubota diesel engine, the new XR8 Traxion produces lots of low down torque to power the large Först flywheel. The engine also drives the hydraulic pump directly through the engine’s pto, which means all the torque is transferred directly
to the tracks. Ryetec will present the UK debut of the Xylog 600 self-contained firewood log processor from Rabaud.
The 600 offers either a selfcontained machine which can be towed to site with a quick start to work with its own foldout log table, on board engine and folding loading conveyor. It can also be built as a bespoke fixed unit to suit any yard, operator or application.
The 600 offers large scale firewood producers a high capacity output, with automated functions to allow one operator to get maximum performance from the machine. Cutting capacity is 600mm and the 35 tonne splitting ram works with a cassette axe system which automatically centres on the log and depending on diameter selects between 2, 4, 8 or 16-way knife action. The machine can also cut without splitting for smaller material.
A felling specification 820mm saw bar makes short work of cutting the timber to length and
thanks to the separate splitting chamber logs can be sawn and split simultaneously speeding up production. The blade also operates from underneath the log so cutting of smaller diameter timber is also kept to a minimum. Twin log clamping arms allow small diameter material to be cut together and the “V” section twin intake belts present the incoming timber in the perfect position every time for cutting.
The Xylog 600 is based on the Xylog 550 which in 2014 took the world record for firewood production of 384cu.m in 24 hours with eight operators to run it around the clock.
Avesta-Vagnen of Sweden designs and manufactures mini timber trailers and cranes to the highest quality standard, exclusively distributed in the UK by Fuelwood. They are carefully specified to meet the precise demands of arboricultural contractors and land owners working in amenity woodlands, parkland or gardens.
These light, compact and highly manoeuvrable trailers can be pulled behind ATVs, utility buggies, compact tractors and smaller vehicles so they can be used in areas where access is restricted. Soft balloon tyres ensure a minimal footprint on the ground protecting the woodland floor.
With their own hydraulic auxiliary 4x4 drive system, high and low speed ranges and antiroll brakes, these trailers can power themselves through the toughest terrain whilst safely carrying loads up to 2000kg.
Options include timber load arms, flatbed and tipper backs giving the trailers many uses. The addition of a crane or winch makes loading of logs up to 5m in length and 350kg a simple task. There are many accessories available across the range.
Any professional whose responsibilities include areas with a lot of trees could potentially save time and effort with the STX-26 stump grinder from Toro.
The patented Toro Dingo TXstyle control system has two simple levers and combine these easy-to-use controls with tracks and transport speeds exceeding 4 mph to ensure maximum productivity.
The exclusive Quadrablade tooth design cuts like a router without ‘pulling’ the operator into the stump, ensuring the smoothest cutting performance on the market. The track design allows for zero-turn capability enabling it to get to small stumps in tight areas – it will fit through a standard gate.

X-CUT, the first Husqvarnamanufactured saw chain has been unveiled at the Huskvarna factory in Sweden.
The optimised micro structured steel and chrome composition of the pre-stretched chain offers extended sharpness and high durability to enhance the performance of Husqvarna chainsaws.
The performance of a chainsaw is totally dependent on the quality of the chain, which is why Husqvarna has decided to manufacture its own saw chains, giving users the opportunity to increase productivity with a chain designed to maximise the performance of Husqvarna chainsaws.
The first chain (SP33G) to leave the factory in Huskvarna is optimised for professional use in the Nordics (where tree types generally are softwood species and are of smaller diameter) and consumer chainsaws elsewhere.
“The X-CUT is a milestone in Husqvarna history. We have provided loggers with world class chainsaws since 1959 — and with our new saw chain and bars, we can deliver a full Husqvarna experience, taking performance and productivity to a new level”, says Pavel Hajman, President of the Husqvarna Division.
Duncan Ross has carried out essential turf rejuvenation work at Edenhall and Langwathby Cricket and Football Club, after severe flooding rendered the site unplayable.
The sports field, which is based in the Cumbrian village of Edenhall, is run by three trustees, and provides an area for villagers to play cricket, football, archery and croquet, as well as hosting athletics in the summer for a local school.
At the beginning of December 2015 the entire field was submerged in water for only the second time in over 100 years, leading to a build-up of silt on the pitches that needed professional work carried out to remove it.
After a tendering process Duncan Ross were chosen to carry out the essential maintenance on the site, which was recommended by the English Cricket Board and The Football Foundation, with their professionalism, planning
and hands on appraising of the situation cited among the reasons behind them getting the job.
A grant was obtained from the ECB and Football Foundation to pay for the work, after their pitch advisors reports had stated that no activity should take place on the site before the silt that was left over from the flood was thoroughly removed.
On site work was carried out on the cricket and football pitches
using the newly acquired Koro Field Top Maker from Campey Turf Care Systems.
The acquisition of the of the Koro FTM comes as Duncan Ross continue to expand their business, and now as well as offering high quality drainage they have invested in the most innovative maintenance equipment to provide customers with a complete service.
