Caution remains in 2020 for construction product manufacturers

The final quarter of last year proved to be a mixed performance for the construction products manufacturing sector, with an equal proportion of manufacturers reporting an increase or decrease in sales for both heavy side and light side products.

The Construction Products Association’s State of Trade Survey for 2019 Q4 reports that 43% of heavy side manufacturers each reported a rise or fall in sales compared to Q3.

Heavy side products are typically used in the early, structural stages of construction. Sales of light side products, typically used in the later stages of building, were reported to have either increased or decreased by 36% of manufacturers.

Manufacturers retain a positive, yet cautious view for the next 12 months that will encompass the UK leaving the EU and negotiating trade agreements during the transition period to the end of December.

On balance, 21% of heavy side firms and 29% of light side firms anticipated a rise in sales for the year ahead. This was combined with the majority of product manufacturers anticipating that headcount would remain unchanged over the same period.

Rebecca Larkin, CPA Senior Economist said: “The Q4 survey results provide a clear illustration of the varying levels of activity across sectors of construction and regions of the country.

“Those manufacturers reporting decreases in sales are likely to be feeding into private new house building and RM&I, where activity has slowed as buyers and homeowners pause to take stock of the economic situation and their personal finances.

“In contrast, manufacturers whose products are used in warehouses, infrastructure or hotels will be buoyed by a pipeline of projects. Nevertheless, the high proportion of manufacturers citing demand as their key concern for 2020 and signs of a pause in hiring suggest that the cloud of uncertainty is yet to clear.”

PAM launch new pre-assembly service for cast iron drainage

Saint-Gobain PAM UK has launched a new pre-assembly service for its above ground BS EN 877 Ensign cast iron drainage system after close collaboration with mechanical and public health contractors FMS Ltd on the Peninsula Hotel project in London. The pre-assembly service from PAM which can save on-site labour costs of up to 60%, involves early feasibility engagement, to CAD and 3D BIM design using the latest digital software. Soil stacks for vertical risers are preassembled in purpose made stillage’s at the plant in Telford, before being air tested as standard prior to dispatch. The stacks are labelled according to the drawings and are in full compliance with BS EN 12056. The stillage’s are fitted with wheels to provide easy movement to manoeuvre the stack assemblies to install positions.

Resiblock provide Retail Therapy at Knocknacarra

Resiblock have teamed with JSA Architects in the specification of Resiblock Resiecco at Gateway Retail Centre, Galway for Knocknacarra Phase 2. New fire resistant vapour control layer

The A. Proctor Group, experts at solving condensation, airtightness and energy efficiency problems in buildings has launched a new innovative high-performance fire-resistant vapour control layer, which is air and vapour tight, thus improving the energy efficiency and reducing the risk of condensation within residential and commercial buildings. Procheck A2 is designed to protect the building fabric from the potential risks of condensation, whilst providing the added benefit of serving as an effective airtight barrier. The unique design consists of laminated glass fibre and foil protected by a clear lacquer. It is this clear surface, which provides Procheck A2 with the added benefit of a low emissivity surface.

An Education in Multitasking and Innovation

The iconic 8,500 square metre former Herman Miller factory on the banks of the Kennet and Avon Canal in Bath has been transformed into a new School of Art and Design for Bath Spa University with the help of some innovative thinking by Structura UK.

Originally designed by Sir Nicholas Grimshaw in 1976 and Grade II listed in 2013, the architects returned 40 years later to convert the factory into a modern, bright, functional and flexible space.

As part of the conversion, Structura UK worked closely with main contractors Willmott Dixon on the complete building envelope from the entrances and glazing through to repairs, refinishing and creating a complete new glass top floor.

This is the country’s oldest GRP building. In order to renew the classic GRP panels, Structura installed two spraying booths on site to remove the panels then sand, recoat, respray and replace. The ability to set up dynamic on-site spraying booths complete with extraction venting saved time and money as well as minimising the risk of transporting and damage to these aged panels.

The glazing throughout the building was also replaced by Structura. Given the building’s listed status, this included sourcing bespoke gaskets from Germany which needed to match the original.

The result is a stunning series of spaces which are visually connected but also allow for privacy. The clean sharp steel and concrete interior is complemented by the flowing panels on the exterior while the new roof top extension is set back from edge of the building to avoid being obtrusive.

The Kingspan TEK Building System of structural insulated panels (SIPs) has provided the bespoke, thermally efficient shell for a minimalist pavilion at Eton College’s Willowbrook Outdoor Sports Centre. Wood was a key part of the material palette with charred timber fitted for the outer cladding and birch-ply boards fitted internally. This approach extended to the structure, with Bentley SIP Systems using the Kingspan TEK Building System for the walls of the structural shell.

Kingspan TEK Building System is formed from SIPs with a high performance, rigid insulation core autohesively bonded between two OSB/3 facings. 142mm thick Kingspan TEK panels were selected for the walls of the pavilion. Bradite delivers colour-co-ordinated character car park

A Norwich underground car park has been given a bright hardwearing look thanks to Bradite’s high performance CF22 Floor Finish. There was no hesitation in using the CF22. First, the main floor was painted grey with one coat of the chlorinated rubber floor paint thinned to 20 percent. This was followed by two full coats. The individual bays were to be delineated in a contrasting colour rather than the more traditional broken white lines. To achieve this the individual bays were masked with timber while the rest of the floor was painted and then treated in the appropriate colours with CF22, again thinned to 20 percent, followed by two full coats.

The investment by ForViva to completely refurbish this 1960’s era Tower Block, firstly involved engaging architects Halsall Lloyd Partnership with a brief to improve both the appearance of the building and its thermal characteristics. To meet the combined requirements of Approved Document B and Approved Document K, Dyer Environmental Controls selected Fieger Louvre Windows. A total of 40 no. Fieger SmoTec vents, tested in accordance with EN 12101-2, were installed to provide dual-purpose general ventilation in summer and emergency smoke control. The vents were fitted with D+H LDF 100-60 24V DC motors, programmed for antitrapping, which was wired to the control system installed by Dyer Environmental Controls, based on individual their RZN 4503T control panels. Apartments’ render finish based on Magply performance

Designers for an apartment development on an elevated site in Chatham specified a highly weather resistant render finish to the elevations, applied across Magply boards. For the upper storeys, the 12mm Magply boards are secured across the timber framework infilling the main structure, while concrete blockwork features right around the ground level podium. This will have timber battens secured to it to create a cavity behind the Magply boards, ready to carry the render treatment. Magply boards carry a variety of internationally recognised accreditations including the recent award of a BDA Agrement certificate, confirming their fitness for new build projects such as the Chatham apartments.

A former hotel in the Polwarth area of Scotland’s capital is the subject of a complex conversion and reconfiguration project, where Marmox Thermoblocks have been specified by the project consultants to address the critical floor/wall junction within the new extensions being constructed. At the base of the new perimeter walls, the block-layers have used a total of 117 of the 140mm wide Thermoblock units each one 600mm long and 65mm high. In addition, 10 Marmox MSP 360 Sealant were supplied for the purpose of completing the stepped joints. Each section of Thermoblock is comprised of ultra-high performance XPS insulation, encapsulating miniature columns of concrete, while the top and bottom are covered by alkali resistant glass-fibre mesh. Permitted Paving

Although a requirement for most new developments, other – often forgotten –planning measures encouraging sustainable drainage (or SuDS) also apply to new or replacement paving around existing properties. They are explained in brand new editions of Interpave’s ‘Permitted Paving’ and other guidelines, which are now available to download via www.paving.org.uk

Originating from the government-backed Pitt Review, various requirements for SuDS affecting retrofitted new and replacement paving were put in place through changes to planning rules in England, Scotland and Wales some time ago. But the growing awareness of the importance of SuDS and permeable paving in the fight against flooding means increasingly robust enforcement by local authorities today.

Before these changes, paving anywhere in a garden or within various non-residential properties, using any materials, was considered to be ‘permitted development’. But these rights no longer apply – except for permeable paving or drainage onto a permeable area within the property. Otherwise planning permission will be needed but, with the latest national and local planning policies encouraging or requiring SuDS, unlikely to be granted.

Nordic Bronze earns its Spurs

Façades clad in Nordic Bronze from Aurubis characterise a new multi-functional building, designed by F3 Architects and constructed by BASE Contracts, that plays a pivotal role in urban regeneration around the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in North London.

The architects wanted the two buildings to complement but not replicate their external material treatments, with façades responding to the site’s industrial metal-working heritage.

Cast iron was used for the Tottenham Experience and Nordic Bronze then chosen for No. 1 Paxton Place. Both buildings share a 900mm coordinating module for their fenestration and cladding, and No. 1 Paxton Place’s bronze vertical seams reflect the randomised verticality of the Tottenham Experience’s cast iron panels.

Nordic Bronze supplied by Aurubis was preformed into trays by Belfry Ltd., and the system was designed and installed by Novo Facades Ltd. The Nordic Bronze trays in four different widths, varying from 60 - 150mm, were then hand-seamed on site. The apparently randomised layout emphasises the verticality of the fenestration, enhanced by double-seamed joints.

Winners of the best commercial workplace award for the South of England, Unit 25 Cambridge Science Park is a state of the art facility providing laboratories and office space for Bio tech and Med Tech companies.

This BREEAM Good facility was built by SDC and features an external façade of glass, metallic panels and fins for solar shading. At each corner of the building a chamfered picture frame feature of curtain walling and panels, adds to the modern design.

Metalline who manufacture a range of architectural fabrications worked closely with MTW Architectural the specialist façade contractor to ensure that all materials were delivered on time and to exact specification.

They supplied in excess of 1000m2 of A2 Ultima insulated panels, Unity interlocking rainscreen panels, interlocking soffits, copings, pressings and cills for the project.

The picture frame finish to the corners of the building were finished in a slate grey polyester powder coating. The horizontal rainscreen panels used to break up the expanse of glass shown on the front of the building were finished in tiger drylac 068/70764 PPC

This finish mimics an anodised finish and features on all four sides of the building.

High performance Magply boards have been selected as the substrate for a bright white silicone render system, used as a striking finish to a single-storey, modularised domestic property on a greenfield site in Kent. The timber frame modules, which form the core of the dwelling, have been unified behind an outer sheathing of 12mm Magply, fixed over a batten cavity, with the multi-layer K-Rend proprietary render system having been applied by specialist subcontractor Fullers Plastering. Despite offering good adhesion for the decorative render system, Magply boards are very moisture stable thanks to their modified MgO formulation that also represents an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional plywood or OSB sheets. Hunter Douglas Architectural supplied 200m2 of open solid wood grill ceiling in Ayous wood in 3-100-30-120. The lengths were designed to fit with minimal on-site cutting required, and to make the panels curved, a plastic pipe was used for the connecting dowels in lieu of rigid aluminium. BAL have signed a new 24-month energy contract with a 100% renewable energy provider. Formed as DONG Energy in 2006 following the merger of six Danish energy companies, Ørsted have completed divested their black energy operations and have established themselves with a 25% market share in offshore wind operations. On a global scale, they have built enough offshore wind to power 9.5 million people, with an ambition by 2025 to power 30 million people with offshore wind. In 2017, Ørsted opened the world’s largest offshore wind turbines at Burbo Bank Extension in Liverpool Bay and continue to grow its offshore presence in UK waters.

Junckers has launched a new acoustic flooring system with height adjustable cradles. Called New Era, the updated system has been developed specifically to comply with minimum standards for multiple occupancy buildings, set out by building regulations. The New Era system uses acoustic cradles with 10mm thick recycled rubber pads, factory-fitted to the underside. The cradles are height adjustable using purpose-made packers, supporting laminated timber battens. 50mm thick mineral wool insulation is placed between the battens and Junckers 20.5mm or 22mm thick solid wood floorboards are fixed to the battens to complete the installation. The use of 36mm thick battens achieves an impact sound reduction of 27dB; and a 48mm thick batten achieves an impact sound reduction of 28dB, thus complying with building regulations.

Mitsubishi Electric delivers the sweet smell of success to Lush Ltd

Ethical cosmetics retailer Lush is now able to deliver energy efficient air conditioning to employees at its new office space in Poole thanks to the installation of Mitsubishi Electric’s City Multi VRF heat recovery system.

Lush expanded its business with a new unit at Dolphin Quays, a complex made up of both residential apartments and office spaces. The units came equipped with running water and electricity, but Lush needed comforts for employees, including air conditioning, to be installed.

The solution came in the form of 12 ceiling-suspended City Multi VRF indoor units and one floor-positioned unit, installed by Modern Facilities Services, a Mitsubishi Electric Accredited Installer.

The system is able to move excess heat, generated from an area which is being cooled, to other parts of the building which need heating, helping to deliver the high levels of efficiency that Lush required. The City Multi system also offers outstanding energy saving performance, advanced control system and flexibility of design for specifiers and installers. The long pipe-runs and ability to connect up to 50 indoor units to one outdoor condenser means that it offers advanced, controllable energy efficient comfort to suit almost any building.

Krystal James, Project Coordinator at Lush, said “We wanted a system that would create a pleasant working environment for our staff, whilst fitting comfortably into the office environment. We also wanted to make sure we avoided any draughts for our employees.”

Two Lossnay Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) units were also installed at the site in order to remove stale air from the office.

The units operate by capturing up to 80% of the temperature of the outgoing air, meaning less energy is needed to bring fresh outdoor air up to the indoor temperature.

There were a number of challenges during the installation which Mitsubishi Electric and Modern Facilities Services were able to overcome, including the need to create additional frameworks for the units to sit on, and working with a large amount of existing pipework at the site.

Gary Whitcher, Director at Modern Facilities Services, said “With a tight eight-week time scale to work towards, the team had to work hard and fast to ensure everything was delivered when promised. We are proud of the result and are pleased to hear that Lush Ltd is considering rolling out the same system to its other sites.”

First responders key to architects’ fire safety decisions

Architects are being urged to consider the role of first responders in the fire resistance aspects of building design, by an industry expert. David Cerquella, Managing Director at Coopers Fire believes that architects should consider the value of vision panels and how they can assist first responders, when specifying the dividing elements in building compartmentation, such as fire curtains. Coopers Fire’s ResQ-Window, for example, permits first responders to see through the curtain, once deployed. This has the potential to help save valuable time during a building’s evacuation. Although building regulations do not currently state vision panels in a fire curtain as mandatory, Approved Document B does require fire doors to have a vision panel.
