Welcome
Weather creates a storm for product manufacturers
The UK’s failure to adapt to extreme weather conditions is welldocumented and the source of a great deal of frustration for most of the population.
The impact of winter weather on business generates a great deal of headlines, but the stark implications of climactic conditions such as prolonged heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures has been witnessed with the construction industry since the start of 2018.
In the CPA’s State of Trade Survey for 2018 Q1, the £56 billion UK construction products manufacturing industry su ered a weak start to the year. Although the collapse of Carillion had a major impact, disruption caused by the snow and freezing temperatures had a bigger negative impression.
Manufacturers anticipate a return to growth in the coming quarters, but rising costs continue to act as a headwind: 90% of heavy side manufacturers and 84% of those on the light side reported a rise in raw materials costs in Q1; the same proportions reported an increase in wages and salaries; and fuel costs rose for 90% of heavy side manufacturers.
Rebecca Larkin, CPA Senior Economist said: “It was always unlikely that heavy side manufacturers would avoid the snow
disruption, with aggregates quarries unable to operate and pauses in activities such as groundworks and bricklaying a ecting demand for products and materials from construction sites. In addition, manufacturing capacity in this energy-intensive sector of the industry is likely to have been temporarily reduced by the National Grid’s gas deficit warning at the beginning of March.
“It appears from the forward-looking indicators that Q1 was just a weather-related blip, as 42% of heavy side manufacturers anticipate sales rising in Q2 and 37% see sales rising over the next 12 months. However, no light side manufacturers expect sales to increase in the next quarter and only 16% anticipate a rise over the course of the year, likely to reflect the lagged impact of any pauses in activity in Q1 on demand for these non-structural and finishing products that tend to be used nearer the end of the building process.”

CUPA PIZARRAS
Natural slate facade and roofing combined in a breathtaking design
Natural slate has the leading role in this residence located in Trélazé (France), very close to Angers, Unesco Heritage City. Its composition perfectly combines energy efficiency and design. DCL architecture study has chosen CUPA PIZARRAS natural slate for its roof and the CUPACLAD® natural slate cladding system for the facades due to its inimitable properties. This recent-built residential area attracts attention because of the innovative use of natural slate. De Coquereaumont Lebreton Architects explains why they selected natural slate for the Quantinière project: “ It is a natural “vibrant” material with shades and colours that change throughout the day. CaberShieldPlus flooring keeps you building
CaberShieldPlus is the ideal flooring solution when building in Britain’s unpredictable climate. Based on Norbord’s popular moisture-resistant CaberFloor P5 tongue-and-groove particleboard flooring panel, CaberShieldPlus is specially designed to withstand exposure to wet conditions Yet, unlike Norbord’s other protected flooring product CaberDek, which features a peelable film on the top surface, CaberShieldPlus has protection on both sides, not just the exposed upper surface. The top surface features a permanent non-slip coating that not only prevents damage to the board but also ensures a safe working platform. The underside is protected with the smooth coating that not only protects against damage but also makes the board easy to slide into position.
As part of a wide-ranging re-development, Eastleigh College in Hampshire has been dramatically transformed, with new and refurbished structures, fitted with eye-catching, perforated Solar Shading and Screening solutions, courtesy of Levolux Working closely with architecturePLB architects, Levolux developed contrasting external Solar Shading and Screening solutions for the two linked buildings. For the southfacing elevation of the main teaching block Levolux provided an external solar shading solution, featuring light green vertical louvres. In total, Levolux crafted 50 perforated vertical louvres or fins, each measuring 6.2 metres high by 550mm wide, which are fixed across first and second floor glazed openings. The Fins are set at a pitch of 900mm, within a 42-metre-long recess.

Rockfon solve demanding challenges with intelligent ceiling solutions
Mitsubishi Electric has launched the next generation of VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) air conditioning with the new City Multi YNW to offer the market a system that delivers ultra-quiet noise levels, an increased performance and a reduced footprint.
“The new City Multi YNW models deliver the lowest installation costs, the lowest running costs and the lowest CO2 emissions currently available in a VRF system,” explains Jordan Jeewood, product specialist for the company’s City Multi range
The YNW outdoor units include a unique new, 4-sided heat exchanger which maximises the space available for plant by reducing the area required for air conditioning modules. Improved compressor and fan design also help to reduce sound power, making the YNW one of the quietest VRF systems available on the market.
“We’ve looked at how to improve the system in almost every area and this means improvements across the board,” explains Jeewood. “In the case of our most popular 34kW model for example we see a 19 per cent increase in seasonal efficiency, making compliance with energy legislation easier to achieve.”
Air source VRF systems are one of the most popular and widely used air conditioning systems in commercial buildings. However, our town and city centres are becoming more densely populated and we see an increase in multi-use buildings with office, retail and leisure spaces in close proximity to both residential and hotel accommodation.
Noise and plant space has therefore become a key issue and the City Multi YNW has been designed to address these challenges whilst meeting energy efficiency legislation.
The City Multi YNW also offers incremental capacity steps which give increased flexibility in noise output control. This flexibility is further enhanced with multiple external static pressure settings, extended up to 80Pa which will help with long or narrow ducting requirements.
“We have increased the amount of cooling capacity that can be delivered per square metre of plant by 28 per cent thanks to the advanced wrap around heat exchanger,” adds Jeewood. “This means less space is needed for outdoor modules and greater flexibility in where they can be located.”
These new models are available in capacities from 22kW to 150kW to offer some of the highest levels of efficiency coupled with smaller footprints, reduced noise levels and increased design options.
City Multi’s unique heat recovery two-pipe option also allows for phased installation, meaning that the cooling and heating system can be installed around a project build, with individual sections commissioned as required.
Up to 50 indoor units are connectable to the larger outdoor unit models and a complete new range of Branch Controller (BC) boxes is now available with reduction in height, a removable drain pan and a reduced refrigerant charge.
A completely new piping layout for the Branch Controllers (BC) boxes also increases the options for designers and installers and can help reduce installation time and make maintenance regimes easier.
“Today’s installers and building operators face tough challenges set by planners and designers and the City Multi YNW is designed to deliver the most energy efficient solutions whilst providing the most comfortable environment,” ends Jeewood.

Scaffolders and roofers can now benefit from an exclusive new scheme offered by insurance specialist BBi Berns Brett
The independent broker and Scaffolding Association member is one of only a few brokers in the industry that can offer insurance cover from A-rated insurers.

Berns Brett: “Well run businesses, with good risk management
can reduce their insurance costs without compromising on the quality of cover or quality of the Insurer. There have been a number of un-rated Insurers that have gone out of business in recent years, leaving policyholders having to pay another premium and deal with any third party claims themselves.”

James Jones
JJI-Joists – the versatile answer for floors, walls and roofs
When it comes to I-Joists, first choice amongst builders and architects is the James Jones’ JJI-Joist, the UK market leader, with an estimated 40% market share. I-Joists are now used in the vast majority of hoses built today. However, JJI-Joists are used for much more than floor systems. JJI-Joists are now commonly used as wall studs where the range of depths and 9mm web make them ideal when thermal efficiency and depth of insulation are paramount. And JJI-Joists are also increasingly used in roof structures as well, either as rafters or where cassette panels, formed using JJI-Joists and OSB or plywood sheets, are used to create a fully insulated ‘room in a roof’. The 12m span achievable with a JJI roof cassette makes them a popular choice for large span requirements such as schools, health centres and other public buildings. Sioo Wood
SiOO:X treated cedar cladding in the Lake District
Timber cladding is being used increasingly as a priority choice amongst architects and designers for use as a protective skin for buildings. This is a reflection of the natural and unique quality that wood provides. Whether the project is a large scale development or a small private dwelling, timber cladding gives greater flexibility in design, is versatile, attractive and environmentally friendly. Having made an often significant investment in timber cladding the question of how it is best protected arises. This natural look is increasingly sought after but the challenge is, how to achieve it without taking the risk of uneven weathering on different aspects of the building, or in protected areas, such as overhanging eaves. Another issue can be the unsightly tide marks caused by extractive wash out, a particular problem with western red cedar. T: 07788 54 2859 E: sioouk@icloud.com www.sioo.co.uk

Wilo
Wilo-Plavis
The Wilo-Plavis is a high-efficiency, low noise and compact solution for condensate lifting. The product’s introduction in early 2017 broadened Wilo’s product portfolio and the offering to building owners and installers alike. Condensate created by a condensing boiler creates additional considerations for the install, not only how to remove it from the property, but also how to handle the acidic nature of the water. The latest revision of the product hopes to address this by making neutralisation crystals as an option available with the product. The product itself has been designed to house a 700g sachet of neutralisation granules in order to combat this issue. Other updates also include updates to the product’s alarm contact feature, making for a better integrated solution all round, with improved connectivity to the rest of the installation.

Kalwall
Healing daylight at Benenden
Kalwall® translucent cladding is the architectural focus of the new £55million development of Benenden Hospital in Cranbrook, Kent. The Kalwall skylights provide additional light in the large atrium throwing (would ‘projecting’ sound better) it deep into the interior. They were specified complete with highly insulating Nanogel which achieves an impress U value of 0.28W/m2K, helping the project attain a Breeam status of ‘Good’. This is particularly impressive given the amount of curtain walling and clerestory glazing involved in the scheme. The skylights have a unique ability to bathe interior spaces with diffused and glare-free daylight, which creates a stimulating and healthy environment. In addition, their heavily insulated composition eliminates glare and hotspots, thereby reducing the load on temperature control systems and the need for artificial lighting.

UNILIN Panels
How UNILIN Evola evolves
A UNILIN Evola collection is impossible without inspiration and so the development team at UNILIN, division panels, is constantly on the hunt for originality and individuality, looking for new ways to make UNILIN Evola excel in aesthetic and textural integrity. The UNILIN studio is full of genuine products, for instance designer coffee tables discovered on Italian holidays, and these are used as inspiration for new textures in the Evola collection. Today, the originality and authenticity of textures are more important than ever, people want to feel, and there’s little point in an attractive décor if it comes across as fake. That is why, UNILIN, division panels, has spent the last few years focusing on developing textures.

Houses thrive with RåBuild House
Having previously experienced the system first hand, the Managing Director of Hill Bespoke specified the RåBuild method of construction, which uses the H+H Thin-Joint System on four new build homes in Cambridgeshire.
RåBuild, an all-in-one approach to building from H+H UK, takes full advantages of the properties of aircrete to allow for the quick construction of high quality homes.
Despite aircrete being a well-established construction material in the UK for a number of years, it is still considered a modern method of construction, and is more than capable of producing outstanding results on bespoke high-quality projects.
The RåBuild house ran alongside conversion of the barns to also offer prestige housing. The site possessed extraordinary heritage value, as archaeological research confirmed that the timbers within the original barns on site dated back to Anglo-Saxon times. BIM technology was used to create models which were accurate to both the original barns, and the RåBuild units.
The benefits of aircrete are multiplied in larger construction projects, where labour costs make up a greater proportion of the overall expenditure. The increased speed of construction achieved by using aircrete reduces the amount of labour required, either lowering the number of labourers needed to complete a project, or by reducing the amount of time needed to complete the masonry shell using traditional materials.
By using the Thin-Joint System and its proprietary Celfix mortar, RåBuild House is able to deliver a weathertight shell within days. This has cost-saving implications for the entire construction project, as delays caused by inclement weather, which occur frequently in the UK, are mitigated.
Neaco’s structural glass balconies are adding beautiful minimalist looks in keeping with the impressive contemporary design of Oakapple Group’s mixed-use development in Clapham.
Kingspan steel offers structural solution
Once completed, Blenheim Point will offer 180 students a high standard of student living, addressing the need for purposebuilt accommodation close to both Leeds city centre and the University of Leeds. To ensure the build programme is on-track for the 2018 intake, Kingspan Steel Building Solutions’ KingBuild System (KBS) has been used to provide a complete building structure and shell solution. The panelised system allowed a rapid, predictable assembly of the seven storeys, providing a weathertight envelope that could be worked on internally even as the external finishes were being applied. As well as being efficient to install, the dry construction method achieves nearzero shrinkage and provides almost zero settlement in the frame.
With a choice of glass-fronted designs, Neaco’s Clearview balcony range is renowned for its superior contemporary visual appeal and the free-standing structural glass option offers the ultimate in minimalist style with no supporting stanchions required. This high-aesthetic solution combines smooth, clean lines with maximum visibility and the durability to handle the most demanding environmental conditions.
Continuous glass is toughened in accordance with BS EN12600 class 1 and secured by aluminium floor channels with integrated rubber seals which insulate the glass and eliminate the need for the more traditional messy mastic detail.
Glass is capped by aluminium top rails which are warm and comfortable to the touch with a powder coated finish in a choice of solid or metallic colours. Balconies are available with a choice of durable aluminium decking which provides a contact area of between 74% and 100% on the surface, yet drains water quickly and efficiently.

Bauder Ltd
Bauder Ltd launches roofing solution for construction within flood sensitive areas
As climate change causes more extreme weather patterns, the construction industry faces new challenges with an increase in excessive rainfall resulting in flash flooding and standing water. Continued development in built up areas where existing drainage systems can be depleted, and natural infiltration is limited has prompted the introduction of Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SuDS) legislations by local authorities.
To combat these issues, Bauder has originated a Blue Roof System which will simultaneously attenuate heavy rainfall and manage its discharge over a 12-24-hour period. This limits water egress to 5-10 litres per second per hectare, the same flow rates for regional greenfield sites. Each BauderBLUE roofing solution is unique, as calculations for the flow restrictor are specific to each project to ensure that the water run off during storm conditions meets drainage requirements of local planning authorities whilst controlling the time it takes to disperse the water.
‘The Bauder brand is recognised for the proactive approach we take to developing our

roof systems and the high standards to which we deliver. With the introduction of the SuDS legislation and the subsequent requirements for developments in built up and flood sensitive areas, the evolution of our ever-popular green roof system was a natural process. Remmers Repair Bawdsey Radar Station
Built in 1938 and protected by Concrete Blast Walls, Bawdsey Radar Station was the world’s first operational radar station. The walls had decayed steadily since the building was vacated in 1991, leaving the top layer of reinforcement exposed to the elements. Being a Heritage site, traditional concrete repair techniques were not allowed. Working in partnership, Remmers and Concrete Renovations Ltd devised a way to repair the walls by using Remmers restoration materials. Remmers coloured mortars were used to repair and simulate the colour of the original concrete alongside Remmers migrating corrosion inhibitor and impregnation cream as part of the 25-year maintenance plan. Custom
built Zurich Hius supplied for
Cambridgeshire apartments
A residential conversion project completed in a small Cambridgeshire town with the mechanical services contractor undertaking the installation of custom built versions of GF Piping Systems’ Zurich range of heat interface units (HIU’s): delivering both very efficient space heating and continuous hot water for the occupants of the apartments.
The W2 Building in Great Cambourne was formerly an office block, but has been refurbished and reconfigured by developer, Aspens, to create 18 high specification dwellings across the three floors. Gowing & Hunt has undertaken the installation of the property’s building services, which includes a centralised boiler system with modern HIUs – tailored to suit the property’s special requirements, providing the ideal delivery solution. The twin plate heat exchanger units had to be customised because the utility cupboards where they are fitted are compact, the standard Zurich design was reengineered to provide top primary connection and incorporated the flushing bypass valve within the casing. With the cover fitted the special Zurich HIUs measure 672mm wide by 790mm tall, while they are just 250mm deep. They offer 10 kW output in heating mode
and 45 kW for direct hot water supply to the apartments’ kitchens and bathrooms. Richard Vincent, the contracts manager for Gowing & Hunt, commented: “The project was originally specified by ourselves – including the decision to make use of a central boiler plant heating system, with three condensing gas boilers plus a booster set in the plant room and featuring the use of twin plate HIUs.

KITCHENS & BATHROOMS
Aspen
Lightweight Drains for Showers & Changing Facilties
In the leisure industry a hygienic environment is a high priority. A cleaning regime usually occurs multiple times per day to ensure the environment is up to standard and maintained for their customers and staff using the facilities.
Often in larger environments, a considerable amount of cleaning product and water is used to ensure the facilities are properly managed. This amount liquid needs a suitable drainage system to accommodate all of the waste water.
In most cases, a lightweight drainage design is chosen, which allows the drain cover to be removed with ease and assist the daily cleaning of the drain channel where build-up of unwanted waste can occur. This allows the operative to remove and dispose of the waste appropriately preventing system blockages and bad smells.
The chosen drain cover should be durable and safe, and be designed with the potential foot traffic in mind. In showers, wet rooms and changing facilities, there is a high chance of people walking around bare foot, therefore a drain cover should have drainage holes or slots that are small enough to prevent snagging of their toes and tripping. In addition, the drain cover should have excellent
Lenton Lane Industrial Estate, Nottingham, NG7 2PQ T: 01159 866 321 E: aspen@canalengineering.co.uk
durability to withstand a constant foot fall without any chance of warping and denting its profile.
To cater for these demanding environments an appropriate material choice for your drainage system is required. Stainless steel is a popular choice because it has excellent chemical resistant properties, which means the cleaning materials used in the daily regime have zero effect on the integrity of the material.
Stainless steel is known for its use in wet conditions because it does not corrode, rust or stain. This will ensure your drainage system and the drain cover, which will be prominently on show, will provide your facilities with a continuous showroom appearance.
