Construction industry begins its catch-up

There have been plenty of mixed signals this summer about the performance and prospects of the construction industry.

Most surveys and pieces of research have pointed to a slowdown in the wider industry with only a few high points being provided, as expected, by housebuilding and infrastructure as both these sectors have become Government priorities in recent years.

Overall, the picture being painted is somewhat gloomy. However, the Construction Products Association’s latest investigation shows that activity in the construction supply chain significantly picked up in the second quarter of 2018 as the industry began its catch-up of work lost due to delays related to Carillion and severe weather conditions in Q1.

The Construction Products Association’s Construction Trade Survey for 2018 Q2 shows that during the quarter, 20% of heavy side product manufacturers and 6% of civil engineering firms returned to growth, whilst the proportion of firms reporting an increase in Q2 activity rose for main contractors, light side product manufacturers and SME builders. New orders data signal that the catch-up will continue in the coming quarters, driven by private housing, public housing and infrastructure, three sectors that account for £60 billion of output annually.

Rebecca Larkin, Senior Economist at the CPA, said: “Order books at the start of the year had suggested there was scope for catching

up with some of the work lost in the opening three months and the survey confirms the industry made a tentative start in Q2. However, new growth will be skewed towards housing and infrastructure – both privately and publicly funded – which remain dependent on programmes of government support and investor confidence in an environment of increasing economic uncertainty.”

The news has been welcomed by Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the Federation of Master Builders (FMB), who said that it was clear from anecdotal evidence that building firms had enjoyed stronger growth in workloads than they did in the first three months of this year.

“Looking ahead, despite growing political uncertainty and Brexit now less than a year away, construction SMEs remain positive,” he added. “Businesses are optimistic with nearly half of firms predicting rising activity levels over the next three months.”

Completing the Square with Nordic Royal Designed by Hoskins Architects and CDA, a major redevelopment occupies most of the southern edge of St Andrew Square in Edinburgh’s ‘New Town’ World Heritage Site. A series of Nordic Royal and stone fins enables the complex to be very ‘open’ when viewed directly, whilst appearing solid in oblique views.

Nordic Royal is a golden alloy of copper with aluminium and zinc, giving a rich golden through-colour that is very stable. It retains its golden colour and gradually loses some of its sheen, providing a protective matt finish. For this project, Aurubis treated the Nordic Royal to give a non-reflective, brushed surface that will then change in subtle ways over time.

Practical fins at the Pontio Centre

The £49m Pontio Centre at Bangor University is a new centre for arts and innovation, which is equipped with a striking solar shading and screening solution, courtesy of Levolux. Levolux’s Infiniti Fin system was chosen to create several arrays of vertical fins, applied across glazed curtain walling. Its unique, patented design creates continuous fins with concealed stainless-steel fixings, for an uncompromised appearance. External fins not only create an interesting architectural feature, but also provide an effective form of passive solar control. By limiting the exposure of glazed areas to direct sunlight, solar heat gain is dramatically reduced. Titon adds new powerful compact HRV unit

Titon has extended its range of MVHR units with the introduction of the new, ultracompact HRV 1.6 Q Plus.

Designed specifically for the modular construction market, the new highperformance unit measures just 600mm wide, enabling it to fit into tight spaces for easy installation and access. The new HRV 1.6 Q Plus combines low power consumption with a heat exchanger offering efficiencies up to 89%, which enhances SAP performance via Appendix Q.

Resiblock at the races

It was a happy 25th birthday to Resiblock, and they celebrated at Ascot Races. The day’s events included a seven-race card and four course menu in the On5 Restaurant, hosted by Jockey David Crosse. Funding secured to refurbish academy in Scarborough Woodlands Academy is a special educational needs (SEN) school in Scarborough and the twostorey building on campus had previously been refurbished using Sika Liquid Plastics’ Decothane Ultra 25-year cold-applied liquid roofing system.

With an additional four buildings on site in need of roof refurbishment as the existing roof surfaces reached the end of their service life, the school worked with Sika Liquid Plastics’ and building surveyor partner, Make Consulting, to secure government funding for a new roof refurbishment project. Following a site audit and roof condition survey carried out as part of the funding bid process, Sika Liquid Plastics’ Area Technical Manager developed a full technical specification and Quality Assured (QA) contractor, Surface

Protection Coatings Ltd, was appointed to carry out the project. The Surface Protection Coatings team prepared the roof surface and carried out spot repairs before undertaking the roof refurbishment as an overlay.

The buildings were brought up to current building regulations standards with 130mm Decotherm insulation board, adhered to the existing roof surface using Decostik adhesive. The Decotherm was also used to create new gutters to reduce the risk of ponding water on the new roof surface.

On the classroom block and kitchen roofs more than 50 roof lights were replaced using the existing apertures and custom-fabricated Decolight triple-glazed fittings.

Roof tiles from Wienerberger’s premium concrete range were selected by WDH to give a new lease of life to one of their social housing developments in Featherstone, West Yorkshire. Marshalls was selected to supply Scoutmoor Yorkstone Natural Stone Paving, which is quarried less than 15 miles from the project, and used throughout the town across the Oldham Metrolink project. Together with flags units, Marshalls also supplied a mixture of setts, tactile units, steps and cladded planters in Scoutmoor Yorkstone facilitating a cohesive external landscape in the space.

Marshalls also supplied bespoke Prospero Granite planters and seating which were jet cut with detailing representing the textile trade in the local area. Intricate artwork was sandblasted into the surface of the planters, and then painted to give the detail a more prominent finish. A number of yorkstone flags were also inlaid with bronze detailing to give the scheme a premium finish.

Scoutmoor natural stone is the strongest Yorkstone in the UK and is widely used throughout London because of its high strength and excellent slip resistance. The extremely durable stone is suitable for both pedestrian and trafficked areas making it the perfect solution for Oldham Town Hall.

Shackerley façades complete office-to-resi transformation

The latest addition to Bristol’s evolving city landscape is The Milliners; a six-storey office block that has been converted into a development of 109 apartments for London and County Estates by office-to-residential specialist, Headoffice3, as Principal Contractor.

To address all the project’s requirements Shackerley’s SureClad® ventilated façade system was specified with creamy-beige coloured ceramic granite panels to reference the surrounding Bath Stone buildings.

Shackerley fabricated more than 960m2 of façade cladding for the project, delivering items on a just-intime basis to work around the lack of storage space at the city centre site.

While little structural work was required to the building beyond internal remodelling to form the individual apartments, the legacy building envelope was incompatible with the change of use both in terms of aesthetics and thermal performance.

Although the existing brick façades were in a good state of repair, they were significantly out of line and it was not possible to overclad them on the confined city centre site without increasing the external area of the building. Instead, the programme required the building to be stripped back to the concrete frame, with a completely new wall build up.

New structural infill panels were inserted between the concrete frame slabs with insulation fixed to the new external wall surface. The SureClad® ventilated façade system was then installed using Shackerley’s Queen’s Award winning SureClad® Access installation system.

The majority of the ceramic granite cladding was specified in a creamy ‘Travertine’ colourway with a natural honed finish, creating a high-end aesthetic that mimics the look and

texture of Bath Stone. A second colourway, beige Volcado,in the same natural honed finish, has been used to complement the ‘Travertine’ and provide subtle contrast. Façade panels were specified in a combination of 1200 x 600mm and 1200 x 300mm formats to allow the installation team to deliver a visually interesting offset facade design with feature banding.

For one of the elevations, to aid soundproofing, the SureClad® ventilated façade was used in combination with the Kingspan BENCHMARK Karrier Panel system. This innovative external envelope solution brings together Kingspan’s high performance structural insulating panels with the premium appearance and longevity of Shackerley’s fully-prefabricated ceramic granite cladding and the installation benefits of its SureClad® Access System.

SureClad® provided a lightweight and flexible system for the new façade and, where there were loading restrictions at roof level; Headoffice3 simply installed a new steel frame over the roof to create a load-bearing frame for the new façade.

The SureClad® ceramic granite panels provided the appearance of Bath Stone with a much slimmer profile, more lightweight panel and none of the natural fissures or inclusions associated with quarried stone.

They also offer the advantage of being impermeable, ensuring freeze-thaw resistance by preventing moisture penetration, and they are resistant to algae, graffiti and U/V, so the robust new façade will retain its high-end aesthetic over time.

All Shackerley façade systems are noncombustible to Class A1 or Class A2 in accordance with BS EN 13501-1.

George Fischer Piping Systems has declared its involvement at the recent Data Centre World Show as a major success after evaluating the sales leads and wider enquiries it received from contractors, consultants and other potential customers visiting its stand with the COOL-FIT 2.0 range being of special interest to many.

Air conditioning and refrigerant pipework has been an important market sector for GF Piping Systems over many years, but the boom in the building of data centres during the past decade has boosted sales dramatically.

The manufacturer has in fact become a key supplier to projects involving leading players in the digital revolution, as well as the contractors specialising in the construction of data facilities.

For its part, the COOL-FIT 2.0 system offers specifiers speed and reliability for the circulation of chilled water or other low temperature liquids. In fact the COOL-FIT 2.0 pipe, insulation and jacket combination can carry saline, glycol or alcohol – as alternatives to pure water – at temperatures down to freezing point.

The system also offers excellent energy conservation characteristics, as well as ease of installation and total corrosion resistance. Pipe sizes range from 32 to 140 mm in diameter and are tested to 16 bar. Furthermore, the installed weight is as little as one sixth that of metal alternatives. The benefits extend from 25% higher energy efficiency and 50% faster fitting as well as reduced maintenance implications.

That growth in demand is due not just to the increased use of social

media, on-line banking and other internet services, but also the shift in energy usage as electricity generation, transport and domestic heating become greener. In fact, the surge in data centre construction is set to see cooling loads account for a far higher percentage of total electricity usage: so cutting waste within such facilities will play a far more important role in combatting carbon emissions.

Lyfthaus features in an architectural masterpiece

Gloucester Cathedral is a magnificent example of an English Cathedral built in the Romanesque and Gothic styles and more recently the cathedral was used as the location of Hogwarts for three Harry Potter movies.

As part of a major refurbishment and conservation programme a new creative direction for the cathedrals disability access was agreed. Bespoke platform lift designers and manufacturers Lyfthaus of Cambridge, England were contracted as the new platform lift suppliers.

Lyfthaus are specialists in tailor-made open aspect lifts for the prestige marketplace and their particular specialism is listed property and property of historic importance. One lift to be located adjacent to stone steps in the North Ambulatory with a raised height of 750mm and the second to access the North Transept via a Lyfthaus built bridging link and with a 1050mm lift travel.

To remain honest to the original architecture a combination of stainless steel and frameless glass was chosen to form a discreet cube design that wouldn’t distract in which a scissor lift platform would travel fully protected by the glass enclosure.

Each of the largest glass side panels weighed over 200Kg/440lbs and needed to be transported through the cathedral by hand - a delicate process.
