Welcome
Manufacturing outlook deteriorates as uncertainty continues to bite
The outlook for Britain’s manufacturers is deteriorating on the back of a cocktail of factors related to Brexit uncertainty, weaker global growth and the impact of protectionist policies.
That is the gloomy conclusion of a major survey published by EEF the manufacturers’ organisation and business advisory firm BDO LLP.
According to the Q4 EEF/BDO Manufacturing Outlook survey, while output and orders remain positive there has been a clear moderation in the strength of balances throughout the course of 2018, a trend which has accelerated in the final quarter.
In particular, there has been a clear divergence in the last quarter between domestic and export orders, with the domestic picture backing anecdotal evidence that companies are putting in plans to increase inventory levels ahead of the UK’s exit from the EU. In contrast exports which have boosted the manufacturing sector over the last few years appear to have hit the brakes.
Commenting, Stephen Phipson, Chief Executive of EEF, said the poor performance figures should not come as a surprise given the significant political uncertainty at home. He said it was essential that there is an agreement for the UK’s withdrawal as soon as possible.
“If everything that can go right does then business and consumer confidence should hopefully gather some steam next year with
improved prospects for growth,” he continued. “That’s the backdrop we’re working to, let’s hope it’s the right one”
The survey also shows some divergence in the performance of manufacturing sub-sectors with those related to construction performing well on the back of a bounceback from the poor weather in the first half of the year and investment in infrastructure. Those sectors related to investment are performing less well, however, on the back of domestic uncertainty at home and weaker growth in global capital expenditure off the highs of recent years.
There is also continuing concern within the industry as regards the continuing rise in costs of raw materials.
In the Construction Products Association’s Construction Trade Survey for 2018 Q3, 80% of main contractors reported a rise in materials and labour costs, 90% of product manufacturers reported an increase in fuel costs and cost rises for civil engineering contractors reached a three-year high.

It has an extremely high degree of vapour permeability, as well as air permeability.

Saint-Gobain PAM
Saint-Gobain PAM launches new rodding branches
Saint-Gobain PAM UK, leading iron solutions manufacturer has launched new rodding branches for its BS EN877 Ensign above ground drainage system. After working alongside installers, Saint-Gobain PAM identified an opportunity to significantly reduce installation time when installing horizontal pipework. This was particularly apparent in multi-storey developments with basement levels where the drainage systems can have many directional changes and multiple connections to vertical pipe stacks. Typically, this type of application would require several components to be assembled together; now with the new 100mm Ensign rodding branches available in 90° and 45°, the installation time of each directional change is reduced by at least 50%.

A new look for Cistermiser’s infrared urinal flushing control valve
Cistermiser have updated their market-leading IRC® infrared urinal flushing control valve, with improved aesthetics and an array of practical new design features.
The IRC® employs motion-sensing infrared to automatically control the flushing of cisternfed urinals, minimise water wastage and ensure compliance with Water Regulations. The PIR sensor detects movement and activates the solenoid valve, allowing water into the cistern.
Incorporating the same proven and robust brass valve, new IRC® design features include a stylish and compact body shape, an “economy” mode option to provide even greater water savings, a new-style mounting bracket for recessed installations and an improved design which allows clients to replace batteries with ease by simply removing the front fascia to access the battery compartment.
The success of the IRC® is due in no small part to its design flexibility. Battery or mains-powered, the IRC® can use batteries as back-up power to mains supply if required. The sensor can be pipe, wall or ceiling mounted, surface-mounted or recessed to conceal the unit and reduce the risk of vandalism. The IRC® reduces water consumption by over 80% and is ready to install straight out of the box. In “normal” mode, the unit operates with a 30-minute cycle which means the cistern will flush a maximum of 2 times per hour.

Sika Sarnafil and partners scoop NFRC awards
Council upgrades all sheltered housing with Aico
Sheffield City Council has completed a programme to upgrade its fire safety throughout its 1,134 sheltered housing properties using Aico’s Multi-Sensor Fire Alarm for an enhanced level of safety; this will enable residents to live safely in their homes for many years to come, even should their health or mobility deteriorate.
Market leading single ply roofing manufacturer, Sika Sarnafil, and two of its Registered Contractors, have triumphed at the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) Scottish Roofing Contractor of the Year Awards. The awards, which recognise outstanding standards of workmanship and technical expertise in the roofing industry, saw Sika Sarnafil win Supply Chain Partner of the Year and Perth-based roofing contractor, Aim Developments, come out top in the Single Ply Roofing category.
The NFRC announced the winners at a ceremony presented by TV broadcaster Jackie Bird, on Friday 26 October at The Grand Central Hotel, Glasgow. Judged by an independent expert panel, finalists were chosen for their exceptional work on Scottish roofing projects across 13 categories.
Sika Sarnafil received the award for Supply Chain Partner of the Year alongside one of its Registered Contractors, Q9 Cladding Solutions, SFS Group Fastening Technology Ltd and Kingspan Insulated Panels UK, for the prestigious Victoria & Albert Museum in Dundee.
The £80 million project, designed by Kengo Kuma to reconnect the city with its river and house an incredible array of exhibits, is an example of world-class architecture. Contracted by BAM Construction, Sarnafil worked closely with Q9, SFS and Kingspan to ensure the innovative roof design could be delivered sustainably and to a superior build quality for maximum longevity. The skillful collaboration saw this impressive project completed well in advance of its September opening – all thanks to close project management and expert teamwork from all involved.
Aim Developments, another of Sika Sarnafil’s Registered Contractors, won the Single Ply Roofing award for the roof of the An Crùbh (The Hub) community centre situated on the beautifully rugged Isle of Sky. Aim Developments was recognised for its ability to deliver an outstanding finish on schedule when faced with the challenge of an incredibly exposed site.
Aico’s Multi-Sensor Fire Alarm contains two sensor types, optical and heat, to constantly monitor smoke and heat levels, sending and receiving information via its intelligent detection software. This sensor information alters the alarm’s sensitivity and trigger points.
The Council has also installed Aico’s Ei414 Fire/CO Alarm Interface, which provides a dedicated connection between Aico Alarms and Warden Call systems.
Evinox comment on Changes to NHBC hot water services standards
The NHBC recently announced the launch of their 2019 Standards, which will become effective from 1st January 2019. The standards apply to all properties with foundations laid on or after that date. Evinox are happy to see some updates to ‘Hot water services’ in the new standards, where changes have been made to some of the flow rates and supply temperatures at the outlets.
For example, the supply temperature at the kitchen sink has been reduced from the previous 60C to 55C, which is in line with the delivery temperature that was selected for the majority of Heat Networks, during the last year.
Helen Gibbons, Evinox Technical and Design Manager, Comments: “This change to the outlet temperature is a very positive development as it will enable district and communal heating system flow temperatures to be reduced, something which is especially important for the growth of 4th Generation Heat Networks in the UK.
“In addition, the lowered DHW temperature combined with the new table in the NHBC standard for simultaneous hot water use, will give design engineers the confidence to reduce the kW demand for individual properties, something which will improve both efficiency and cost of UK Heat Networks.”

Unique Weathered Original London Stock brick now available from Imperial
After several years of research and development, Imperial Bricks is delighted to announce a genuine replication of the original ‘London Stock’ brick. UltraScape introduces eco-bed bedding mortar
UltraScape has launched a new environmentally friendly bedding mortar – eco-bed - a fine bedding mortar manufactured to meet and exceed the strict requirements of British Standard 7533. UltraScape eco-bed offers all the benefits you would expect from a BS 7533 compliant bedding mortar, including an impressive compressive strength of 45N/mm², but contains 20% recycled material. The addition of recycled material means that for every 1,000m² of paving bedded with eco-bed and jointed using flowpoint eco, an environmentally friendly rapid set flowable grout, 12 tonnes of recycled material will be used (based on 30mm bed depth, 10mm joint width and a stone size of 600 x 400 x 50mm). This significantly reduces the use of virgin aggregates.

It’s a situation that global coatings manufacturer AkzoNobel Wood Coatings, with its UK headquarters in Blackburn, are very familiar with, and is one key factor that determines their stance of strongly endorsing the fully factory finished concept in conjunction with their extensive range of timber joinery and cladding coatings.
This range includes their Sikkens Cetol WP562 - a translucent base stain with resistance to the effect of blue stain fungi through to their Sikkens Rubbol WF382 - a water borne acrylic topcoat for use over 1K or 2K primer systems.

Ancon
Ltd
Shearfix stud-rail calculation program
Ancon has released an enhanced version of its popular Shearfix design software that enables engineers to maintain a flat concrete slab at column heads by reinforcing the area against punching shear with a CARES-approved, prefabricated, stud-rail system. This Eurocode 2 compliant software automatically calculates the optimum design of Shearfix punching shear reinforcement for virtually any column size, shape and location. It will take into account any number of rectangular or circular slab openings, showing the designed stud and rail layout in either a 2D or 3D view, depending on user preference. Input tabs, sequenced logically, capture the column data quickly and easily, with a punching shear check and stud-rail design generated in seconds, even for stepped slabs where stud height varies.

CUPA PIZARRAS
Luxury Lansdowne House
A total of 8,000 CUPA 12 slates were used for the 300m2 roof of Lansdowne House. Dirk Visagie, director of Archangel Architects, Cambridge, explained that the choice of slate was key to the location of the property and its surrounding buildings: “With a neighbouring church and some existing period buildings on the land, it was essential that the property was in keeping with the environment. We were keen, however, for the overall look of the house to be consciously contemporary, using large windows to maximise light. The use of CUPA 12 helps to give the building a natural, yet sleek and contemporary finish.” Extracted from one of CUPA PIZARRAS’ Spanish quarries, CUPA 12 is a high quality dark grey slate with a smooth finish. With a life span of more than one hundred years and very little maintenance required, natural slate is a durable, weatherproof product, un-matched by artificial alternatives.

BauderROCK
Noise reduction and sound absorption
BauderROCK insulation within a waterproofing system provides exceptional benefits for airborne sound and rain noise reduction, and sound absorption within a building.
This insulation is suitable for all flat roofs utilising single ply or bitumen membranes in a warm roof construction.
Mineral fibre insulation is produced through spinning molten rock to create a mass of fine, intertwined fibres and pressed into boards. The insulation is produced as flat board, trapezoidal infills or tapered to create falls on the roof. The three considerations in acoustic design are airborne sound, rain noise intensity and sound absorption.
The BauderROCK mineral wool insulation significantly reduces noise transmission by 4748dB (235mm-255mm) for noise transmitted through the roof.
BauderROCK predicted Rain Noise Intensity reduction measures between -52.5dB and -52.0dB (235mm and 255mm).
Reducing noise level from within a building is especially crucial in buildings such as sports halls and manufacturing plants where there
70 Landseer Rd, Ipswich IP3 0DH T: 0845 271 8800 E: info@bauder.co.uk
is often a great deal of noise generated from inside. BauderROCK Acoustic Infill provides high performance sound absorption when utilised with perforated metal decks. Bespoke infill trapezoidal ‘wedges’ are cut to fit the specified roof deck.
A BauderROCK system of 235mm offers a U value of 0.15 W/m²K and 255mm a U value of 0.16 W/m²K.

Interpave Regeneration Revisited
The trade association Interpave has just launched a new case study exploring the transformative power of inspired hard landscape design.
Covering a 6-year period, the case study revisits the phased regeneration of Orchard Villagepreviously known as the Mardyke Estate - in east London, master-planned and designed by the multi-disciplinary practice PRP. The case study features application of a restrained palette of precast concrete hard landscape products as part of a master-plan.
It includes extensive use of permeable paving for SuDS on a sensitive site bounding a multiaward-winning wetland park, home to a variety of wildlife. It also demonstrates the longer-term robust performance of precast concrete paving.
A simple palette of hard landscape materials defines the road hierarchy and creates a language that unifies the whole site. Simple and ‘clean’ materials predominate, so that an open feel to the site is maintained.
The concrete block paving was carefully selected to complement the buildings, with a silver-grey granite finish. Concrete kerb units are also used extensively, some flush with the paving.
The case study is available via Interpave’s new website - an essential resource covering all aspects of design with precast concrete paving, including permeable paving for SuDS. www.paving.org.uk

Samuel Heath Door closers retain aesthetics of luxury apartments
Powermatic concealed door closers have been used to help retain the Victorian heritage and high-end aesthetics of apartments in six, Grade II listed buildings overlooking a garden square in London’s fashionable Notting Hill. The properties were at the point of being placed on the ‘endangered buildings’ list when they were acquired by Alchemi, who set about the task of restoring the 5-storey properties to their former glory by working closely with English Heritage. Samuel Heath’s jambmounted, controlled, concealed door closer, Powermatic has been used on the main entrance doors to the apartments to ensure that the high-spec, luxurious feel and appearance are not spoiled by unsightly mechanical arms and control boxes. The door closers have the added advantage of being able to accommodate restricted door clearances and 90-degree reveals.

Kidde
New Standards for Fire and CO Alarms
The Scottish Government has recently published wide-ranging headline proposals extending current minimum alarm provision for private rented housing to all other tenures, including social and owner-occupied homes. For fire protection, this means interconnected smoke alarms in principal living rooms and heat alarms in kitchens, in addition to smoke alarms in circulation areas on each storey.
The Scottish proposals also require carbon monoxide alarms in all homes and encourage combining CO alarm installation with smoke and heat alarms.
They recognise that – in today’s uncertain world – smoke, heat and CO alarms offer the first line of defence in housing, providing critical early warning at low costs. Kidde already offers compatible ranges to optimise efficiency and whole-home protection. Kidde’s Firex alarms can interconnect with its mainspowered CO alarms.
Here, all the alarms sound when one is triggered – with different, distinct alarm sounder patterns for carbon monoxide or fire. So, without the need for remote switches or panels, the system alerts occupants to the specific hazard that confronts them. This allows them to respond quickly, making the right choice from the very different alternative actions for either fire or carbon monoxide.

Hunter Douglas Hunter Douglas installs HeartFelt® wall system in Hasselt’s new City Hall
For the first time, Hunter Douglas Architectural has applied its modular felt ceiling system, HeartFelt®, to a wall. In an exciting new development, the carrier system was adapted so that it could be used on several curved walls, as well as ceilings, at Hasselt City Hall, in Belgium.
Jaspers-Eyers Architect and UAU Collectiv worked with the technical experts at Hunter Douglas Architectural to realise the vision and the ceiling and walls in the Hall’s public spaces and offices are now covered with 115.000 lm
(linear metres), 40mm-wide HeartFelt® panels in earth tones. Hunter Douglas Architectural was already developing a new carrier system when it was specified for this scheme, which enabled it to optimise the design during the project. It developed a polyester band that was fitted to detachable wall panels, which then pushes out the panels at the front of the carriers so that they all lean slightly forward, while locking strips also ensure that the vertically mounted panels aren’t pushed out of the carriers by their own weight.

Magply
Triple role for Magply in passive build coach houses
The development of a new garden city on former MOD land at Bicester, Oxfordshire, is including a large number of homes built and certified to Passivhaus standard, with the specialist company involved making extensive use of Magply boards for three separate roles. One of these, Plot 101, which is nearing structural completion now, will feature two bedrooms, flexible living spaces and an integral garage behind its rendered elevations. The 9mm Magply boards, supplied have been specified to offer 90 minutes fire resistance as well as racking strength, acoustic insulation and also as the render backing board. Despite offering good adhesion for the decorative render system, Magply boards are very moisture resistant thanks to their modified MgO formulation that also represents an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional plywood or OSB alternatives.

Amtico
Amtico chosen for refurbishment of Clothworkers’ South Building
When the School of Design at the University of Leeds wanted vibrant flooring for its Clothworkers’ South Building, it chose Amtico’s versatile Signature collection. The versatility of Amtico’s Signature Collection, with its vivid hues and distinctive abstract designs – such as smoky-effect Umbra Eclipse, and luxuriously dark Back to Black Vamp – was of immediate appeal. As the location was such a hightraffic area, the durability of the product was also a significant factor and made it a logical choice for the project. Each stair riser was given the tone of the approaching floor level – for example fuchsia-hued Marrakech rises to orange Sevilla – while the colours were blended on the half landings. The multiple colours and laying patterns of the Signature collection led to Amtico being chosen.

Flowcrete UK
Pioneering distillery installs Flowcrete flooring
The new distillery for luxury whisky brand The Macallan has installed a variety of Flowcrete UK floors. To ensure that the surface would maintain a functional, visually attractive finish, 5,570m2 of the polyurethane system Flowfresh HF LT was applied. This robust, chemical resistant system would be able to withstand the onsite conditions and provide additional benefits such as easy cleanability, slip resistance and an in-built antibacterial agent. A sleek grey colour was chosen to match the production area’s industrial aesthetic and thanks to the easy applicability of the system, the floor was completed on schedule and to The Macallan’s exacting standards. Flowcrete’s screeds and decorative finishes were also applied across the site’s visitor centre and distillery tour.

MiTek
MVHR made easy with Posi-Joist
McLaren Construction (MC) presented Howarth Timber Engineered Solutions (HTES) with a unique set of criteria for the development of 110 luxury apartments and houses at Cambium Gardens, Putney, in London.
Designed by Scott Brownrigg Associates, the brief was to construct very energy efficient buildings with large open rooms but keep the building mass to a minimum for their luxury development apartments and houses. Also to combine this with ventilation systems providing constant fresh air into the apartments and homes.
MC teamed up with HTES, via the carpentry installers J A Stott, in order to use their expertise and the MiTek PAMIR software to meet the required specification. It was identified at an early stage that the pre-cast concrete slabs originally specified would not work and an alternative in the form of MiTek’s Posi-Joists was tabled. This lightweight solution allowed for the complex Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery (MVHR) ductwork and building services to be hidden within the floor joist zone, maximising the living space within the buildings.
HTES using the latest EC5 compliant MiTek software PAMIR to design not only the Posi-Joist
floor joists but also using the 3D capabilities of PAMIR, ensured that the MVHR ductwork was able to traverse the floors of the luxury apartments and houses. HTES worked directly as an integral part of the project design team producing interactive 3-D models and BIM compatible design solutions so that the entire design team could check and sign off the proposals before any work was carried out on site.
The MiTek PAMIR software is able to produce not only .dwg drawings, but also .pdf files, CAD drawings as well as Industry Foundation Class (IFC) files – to be imported into Revit. This coordinated approach saved both time and money on the build for the Contractor, Architect, Engineers and M&E designers.

Omnie
UFH warms traditional style Cotswold stone homes
A development of six new five-bedroom detached properties, close to Cirencester town centre, whose construction features the area’s distinctive natural Cotswold Limestone, is making full use of the benefits to the ClipPlate system and other products form the range of OMNIE Limited. All of the loops of 16.5mm polypropylene pipework, totalling 840 metres in length, are connected back to a nine port Precision-Flo manifold under the staircase, which is in turn fed from each building’s Worcester Bosch system boiler, which also supplies the homes’ three bathrooms via a main hot water storage vessel. ClipPlate is amongst the most popular options to OMNIE’s LayFast brands: being compact and suitable for in-screed applications. Pipe runs are simply pressed into the profiles without the need for joints and resist being disturbed as the screed is laid.

Wilo
Wilo-Plavis
The Wilo-Plavis is a high-efficiency, low noise and compact solution for condensate lifting. The product’s introduction in early 2017 broadened Wilo’s product portfolio and the offering to building owners and installers alike. Condensate created by a condensing boiler creates additional considerations for the install, not only how to remove it from the property, but also how to handle the acidic nature of the water. The latest revision of the product hopes to address this by making neutralisation crystals as an option available with the product. The product itself has been designed to house a 700g sachet of neutralisation granules in order to combat this issue. Other updates also include updates to the product’s alarm contact feature, making for a better integrated solution all round, with improved connectivity to the rest of the installation.

Compliant with Building Regulations Part L, WarmCair heaters produce up to 36kW heat output and are up to 98% thermally efficient. Savings in gas consumption can be as much as 28%. An optional ‘Cleanflow’ electronic air filtration system provides the added benefit of filtered air with the ability to filter 95% of airborne pollutants as small as 1 micron including pollen, dust and cigarette smoke.
Another option which will provide all the advantages of warm air heating would be to install a Johnson & Starley Aquair water to air space heater together with another suitable heat source such as the Johnson & Starley QuanTec boiler. This can replace any existing warm air heater in a single dwelling using the existing ducting and with the benefit of being able to add extra radiators for additional rooms or loft conversion.
The installation of an Aquair linked to any other heat source can be ideal for installers who do not hold a DAH1 certificate as it is not needed for this type of warm air installation.
