Mayor spearheads campaign to make London the world’s

first National Park City

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan has launched plans to help make the capital the world’s first National Park City and one of the greenest cities on earth.

As part of this ambition, the Mayor will use planning regulations to protect the Green Belt and incorporate into new developments more green roofs, green walls, rain and habitats for wildlife.

He will also fund thousands more trees and improvements to community green spaces, and help London’s boroughs invest in our much loved parks.

As a first step to making this happen, the Mayor announced a new £9 million Greener City Fund for London to create and improve green spaces. Local groups can apply for the first £1m of grants to plant neighbourhood trees and maintain green community areas.

The strategy outlines Sadiq’s vision of making the city a greener, cleaner and healthier place by targeting London’s

toxic air, and making London a zero-carbon city by 2050 with energy efficient buildings, clean transport and energy and increasing recycling.

The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said: “London is home to outstanding green spaces that I want to protect, invest in and

improve as we aim to become the world’s first National Park City.

“We can also increase the amount of greenery in the city by installing many more green roofs and making our streets greener. From our famous Royal Parks, to our muchloved community gardens

Club first to specify Groomer attachment

Stadion Galgenwaard, home to FC Utrecht in The Netherlands, has recently purchased two unique Cub Cadet Infinicut 34” mowers – unique in that they are the first 34” models to be fitted with the optional Groomer attachment.

In charge of the stadium pitch, as well as 5 pitches at the clubs Zoudenbalch training complex,

is Head Groundsman Jan Gijzen. “I first saw the Infinicut mowers when I made the trip to SALTEX last year,” he explained. “I’d used a Groomer during my time as a greenkeeper and though they’re standard practice on the golf course, they’re not so much in a groundsman’s regime.

“Everyone said it was plausible so we gave it a shot – and already

with the Groomer attachment we’ve seen great improvement.”

The optional Groomer attachment contra rotates to achieve the maximum effect in alleviating grain and turf density problems. It has a fully sealed gearbox and is designed for single lever action to give simple engagement or disengagement and can be installed and removed in rapid fashion.

It effectively stands the grass plant up, helping to achieve a cleaner cut and create space for the existing, and new plants to grow. It also removes dead plants and unwanted organic matter improving the overall health and resistance of the turf.

and urban nature reserves like Woodberry Wetlands, this ‘green infrastructure’ is a vital asset that improves air quality, boosts quality of life, conserves wildlife and attracts thousands of visitors.”

London Assembly Enquiry 1

As this is the first National Park City, the Mayor is working with partners across London, to set criteria for a National Park City, which will include:

• Protecting and increasing the amount of green space in the capital

• Increasing access to green spaces for Londoners of all ages, particularly in areas where there is currently a deficiency

• Increasing the quality of green spaces, ensuring they are well maintained and create healthy habitats for wildlife

• Valuing London green spaces, accounting for the health, environmental, social and economic benefits it brings to London.

The Mayor’s strategy proposals are designed to help London towards this goal and the aim of launching London as a National Park City at an international Summit in Spring 2019.

It is easy to feel more than a little cynical when a leading politician comes up with the next “great idea”.

In an age when grabbing headlines with soundbites seems to be the priority, we are often left scratching our heads when Government announces a new policy.

Credit is due, therefore, to the Mayor of London. Not only has he come up with a headline-friendly “next big thing”, but he has also provided a lot of detailed information on how he plans to pull off his attempt to develop London as the world’s first National Park City.

Of course, the announcement begged the immediate question – what exactly is a National Park City? But, thankfully, the Mayor provided a full answer.

The devil is in the detail and the Mayor’s plans are something every council in the UK should study closely. At a time when we are attempting to find ways to safeguard the long-term future of our parks and green spaces and secure sustainable funding and investment, the National Park City concept could well provide some crucial pointers for the rest of the UK.

Along with many others, we will keep a close eye on the development of the National Park City concept and update in the coming months.

Elsewhere in this month’s issue we have a spotlights on a wide variety of product areas – from brushcutters to winter maintenance and ride-on mowers to estate management. With a number of major arboriculture events taking place in the next few weeks, Jane Carley turns her attention to forestry equipment.

As the new rugby union season gets under way, we have an interview with the head groundsman at reigning PRO14 champions Scarlets, down in deepest West Wales. There is also the usual mix of product launches, industry news and opinions.

Polaris responds to emergency call

A new emergency police vehicle capable of mobilising officers quickly in some of West Norfolk’s most hard to reach places has been launched in Hunstanton.

The Polaris Ranger 570 AllTerrain Vehicle, supplied by Linstead Farm and Garden Machinery, will be based at Hunstanton beach to help search for missing people or assist officers in emergency situations. It is the first time this type of vehicle has been used by Norfolk Constabulary and whilst it will mainly patrol Hunstanton beach, it can also be used on rural land and territory.

Temporary Inspector John Bane, who has taken delivery of the Polaris, complete with police livery, said: “This vehicle will enable us to respond quickly and effectively to incidents taking place on the beach.

“In the cases of a missing person, it provides us with the opportunity to cover lots of the beach in a short space of time where a police vehicle or an officer on foot cannot.

“The vehicle will also be used to patrol the beach and will support the Sandi Starfish initiative which helps reunite families if a child is lost. The vehicle has been designed to catch the eye of a missing child who can then flag

it down if they see it and get the assistance they need.”

Temporary Inspector Bane added: “The vehicle has the potential to be deployed to other areas, such as woodland and farmland, to assist in other missing person enquiries or preplanned operations, therefore enhancing our ability to respond to incidents in rural locations.”

Norfolk’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Lorne Green, said: “Norfolk has a wonderful variety of attractions for families to visit during the long summer holidays not least the long sandy stretches of Hunstanton Beach. While we want this summer to be one to remember for all the right reasons there is always a possibility a child can get separated from their family.

“Rural crime remains one of my top priorities and it is also reassuring to hear the ATV can be deployed to incidents in areas of the countryside where local patrol cars may find it difficult to access.”

Officers were looking to name the Polaris Ranger 570 to help make it more recognisable to children and asked the public to help by voting for their favourite name. There were three names to choose from: Nelson, Rocky and Sunny and the name finally chosen was Nelson.

Conservation project starts along route of HS2

As part of preparations for Britain’s new high speed railway, HS2 Ltd is creating its first new wildlife habitats along the line of route.

Work at the Finham Brook site in Kenilworth, Warwickshire, starts this month and includes the creation of six new ponds as well as new woodlands featuring

over 6,200 trees and shrubs. It’s expected to be completed by the end of the year.

However, HS2 has drawn severe criticism from environment and wildlife groups. The Woodland Trust points out the Envrionmental Statement for HS2’s Phase 2a (from West Midlands to Crewe) shows that:

• There will be direct loss to 10 ancient, irreplaceable woods, totalling at least 10.5 hectares.

There will be damage (due to noise, dust, lighting etc.) to a further 4 ancient woods.

• 27 ancient or veteran trees will also be lost.

It claims this is a significant increase, as previous route announcements suggested two ancient woods were to be lost (6.5 hectares). This is on top of the 63 woodlands that will be impacted by Phase 1, and at least another 17 woods along the proposed Phase 2b (East and West) routes.

The new habitats announced by the Government will support local wildlife species ranging from birds to great crested newts. They are part of an unprecedented conservation

project, which will see a green corridor of connected wildlife habitats created alongside the railway, including up to 7 million new trees and shrubs, as well as wetland, ponds, heathland and meadow.

Anthony Coumbe, High Speed Two (HS2) Ltd’s Head of Environment for this region said: “The new habitats at Finham Brook will be the first of many to come between London and the West Midlands. They will help us to care for the local environment and serve as a new home to wildlife affected by the future development of the railway.

“At Finham Brook, we’re creating a bigger and better habitat than local species such as great crested newts currently have. We’ll relocate newts to the habitat next year, once it has become properly established, while other wildlife will start to use the area naturally over time.

“Ultimately, we’re aiming to create a railway that works for nature as well as passengers, with a green corridor of connected habitats running through the spine of the country.”

Various preparatory works for the first phase of HS2, from London to the West Midlands, are currently underway. These range from nature conservation activity to archaeology investigations. Main construction work is set to start in 2018/19 following detailed design work.

But the Woodland Trust said with the current number of woodlands suffering direct loss or some damage already standing at 94 and likely to rise further as the ancient woodland inventory is updated and more route details are confirmed, it is stepping up its Enough is Enough campaign is fighting to ensure planning laws are changed.

Woodland Trust ecologist Luci Ryan, said: “Ancient woods are irreplaceable, evolving over centuries, yet here we are again facing their destruction to save a few minutes on a train journey.

“Sustainable, green transport should be welcomed, yet this route announcement confirms the likely damage to at least 94 ancient woods - and is only cause for a wake.”

This comes just six months after the Government’s response to the House of Lords High Speed Rail Select Committee report detailed how it will no longer include ancient woodland in its biodiversity offsetting calculations – essentially admitting that HS2 Ltd could never have ensured no net loss of biodiversity, when irreplaceable ancient woodland was being destroyed.

Dennis & SISIS cricket seminar proves a big hit

Dennis and SISIS recently hosted their first ever Cricket Pitch Renovation Day which was hailed a huge success.

Over the past few years Dennis and SISIS have held pre-season indoor seminars for anyone responsible for the maintenance of a cricket pitch.

The seminars, which have taken place at various venues across the country, have brought together over 1100 cricket groundsmen from grass roots, local and county clubs, international test venues, local authorities and schools and colleges.

Building on the success of these seminars, Dennis and SISIS working in conjunction with Chris Wood (ECB Pitch Consultant) and Ian Smith (St Albans School Turf Consultant) decided to introduce a Cricket Pitch Renovation Day, which combines a mixture of thought-provoking indoor

presentations with outside practical demonstrations. This exciting new chapter in the “For the Groundsmen by the Groundsmen” series began at St Albans School Woollam Trust, where over 160 delegates made their way to see the new concept.

The event, which was supported by Boughton Loam, CricketWorld.com, Durrant Cricket, Limagrain UK, RT Machinery, Ecosol Turfcare, Poweroll and Headland Amenity was started by a warm welcome from Robert Jack (Dennis and SISIS) and Mark Illott (St Albans School Cricket Professional and former Essex and England Cricketer).

Amateur sports pitches can win a premiership makeover

Amateur sports teams across the country are in with the chance to be able to renovate their pitch to premiership standards.

Pitch to Play has been launched by Allett and the Institute of Groundsmanship (the IOG) to find the worst amateur pitch in the country, and will award the chosen club with some top of the range groundskeeping equipment worth £3,000, plus a bespoke pitch maintenance programme from the IOG.

Pitch to Play is open to any amateur sports team in the UK that has an under 18s team, no matter what sport.

The winner of Pitch to Play will receive £3,000 to be used on the purchase of a new Allett lawnmower to help maintain the pitch to a professional, premiership standard. The runners up will win £500 towards the club kitty and third place will win £250.

All prize winners will also receive a tailor-made maintenance programme from the IOG to help maintain the pitch for the future, along with a new kit and pitch side sponsorship.

Unscientific advice putting UK at risk from Japanese Knotweed

Cowboy businesses pushing ‘quick-fix’ treatments for infestations of the highly destructive Japanese knotweed plant are exposing homeowners and businesses to legal and financial risks that could land them with an ASBO or a neighbour’s insurance bill.

August in the United Kingdom is peak growth season for knotweed, as data from Bristol University’s PlantTracker app shows the weed now covers most of the country. There is a risk, however, that by the end of the year the most effective treatment will no longer be available to experts.

The European Union are currently debating whether to renew a licence allowing the use of glyphosate in the EU, which could have a major impact on the effort to halt the spread of Japanese Knotweed across the United Kingdom.

Sarah Mukherjee, Chief Executive of the Crop Protection Association, said: “Invasive species like Japanese Knotweed create a serious risk to biodiversity by crowding out native species. It can lead to major damage of infrastructure and clogs up waterways, exacerbating flood risks.

“The weed is now present all over the UK, and it’s important that experts have access to the most effective treatments available. If glyphosate isn’t

renewed by the European Union, the problem will be far worse, and homeowners will have to resort to expensive and often impracticable methods of treatment such as excavation and disposal of the waste.”

Failure to properly treat Japanese Knotweed can leave homeowners and businesses liable to legal claims from neighbours and insurers or sanctions from local authorities.

David Layland, joint Managing Director of Japanese Knotweed Control, one of the UK’s first specialist remediation companies, and founding member of the Invasive Non-Native Specialists Association, said: “Despite the claims of some companies and websites, you cannot get rid of knotweed without professional help. To eradicate the plant the roots need to be killed, and the products required to do this are not available to the public.

“The most effective method of treatment is to inject the stem with glyphosate, a process that is highly successful on healthy adult plants, which can be controlled, in one growing season. Although the plant is controlled, it takes time over many years for the plant to fully biodegrade into the subsoil during which time the plant must be left alone. It’s also possible to excavate the entire area, but because knotweed is so aggressive, the soil needs to be disposed of at a licensed waste facility, which can be expensive.”

Landowners can be found liable under a range of laws if it is proven they know about an infestation of knotweed but fail to deal with it properly. Repeated negligence in letting knotweed spread could even result in an ASBO under the Anti-Social Behaviour Crime and Policing Act 2014.

The legal liabilities can be even more complex for anyone involved with buying, selling or developing land or property affected by knotweed. Anyone from the surveyor to the seller could be open to a lawsuit or excluded from insurance if it’s proven that they knew about an infestation but failed to act.

David Layland added: “Dealing with Japanese knotweed is generally a case of remediation, not eradication. The long process of safely removing the plant can take years. Warranties and insurance are crucial as they give the legal guarantee that solicitors and conveyancers are looking for to demonstrate the issue is under control.

“Companies should carry adequate insurance with a reputable insurer, and preferably include structural damage cover. This same level of continued protection is simply not afforded by quick-fix companies, which bring with them only a continual financial burden.”

Free guide offers advice on attracting sponsorship for environmental improvement

Councils, Britain in Bloom groups, horticulturalists and community organisations are being offered a free guide with advice on how to attract sponsorship for initiatives to improve Britain’s public spaces.

The 30 page booklet has been produced by Amberol, who manufacture self-watering planters and street furniture such litter bins, benches and picnic tables, all made from recyclable or recycled materials. The guide is free from Amberol on application.

Sections include advice on attracting sponsorship from businesses and other groups, with suggestions for ways of approaching organisations,

raising awareness and putting a sponsorship structure in place.

The booklet also explains some of the forms of grants and funding available, as well as including a range of case study examples from Britain in Bloom groups and organisations who have successfully used sponsorship to fund a range of improvement projects.

Patience Atkinson-Gregory, Amberol’s managing director, explains the reasons behind creating the sponsorship guide.

She says: “There’s a lot of hard work that goes on around the UK to keep communities looking attractive.

“Although much of that work is voluntary, it does cost money

to buy plants, containers, tools and important items such as litter bins. In our experience, businesses are often happy to help, but they aren’t sure how to go about it. After all, a well-kept and good-looking environment benefits everyone and can help improve the economic prosperity of a region.”

Councils and community groups are continuing to struggle with funding issues and budget cuts, so many organisations are looking for positive ways to involve businesses and other sections of the community in improving their environment.

Ransomes donates to local bowls club

Ransomes, a Textron Specialized Vehicles brand, has donated a Ransomes Super Bowl pedestrian cylinder mower to Waldringfield & District Bowls Club based in Ipswich, Suffolk, after the club relocated itself to unused land which members have since renovated at Ransomes Sports Club on Sidegate Avenue.

With limited funds to facilitate the relocation, Bert Warne, President of Waldringfield & District Bowls Club, and David Schofield, Treasurer of the Club, wrote a letter to Alan Prickett, Senior Director at Ransomes Jacobsen based in Ipswich.

Commenting on the donation of the mower, Alan Prickett said: “Ransomes is one of the oldest established businesses in Ipswich, and has employed thousands of local people over the years. It

is in our DNA to support local people, local clubs, and the local community in general.

“When I was approached by the club, I was touched by the lengths that its members had gone to in ensuring that the club could continue to provide enjoyment and pastime to so many people’s lives.”

Prepare for the Microdochium season with a preventative approach

With the autumn fast approaching, and the risk of disease increasing, greenkeepers are being encouraged to consider a new approach to disease control, and start trialling an integrated, preventative disease management strategy.

Dr Colin Mumford, Bayer technical manager, explains that recent losses of active ingredients from the market, and the possibility of further withdrawals, particularly contact acting curative fungicides, due to regulation changes, means it is important to start developing and testing out new programmes that don’t depend on this type of chemistry.

“I suggest greenkeepers start to test out their new preventative strategies now, while there’s still the safety net of contact chemistry available,

When taking a preventative approach to disease control, greenkeepers should not overlook the importance of enhancing grass plant health, and integrate their chemical controls with cultural and biological practices.

“Having your turf in prime health condition will give you a head start against Microdochium patch as well as other diseases, such as Anthracnose, limiting the severity of outbreaks later on in the disease season.”

And to maintain or improve turf health, Colin suggests that greenkeepers should make sure that their turf is supplied with adequate nutrition, and if required, nutritional supplements for turf development can be added.

drought stress in particular often leads to weakening of the plant. So, providing that you don’t over-water your greens, as moist conditions are favourable to disease pathogens, supplemental irrigation can help to overcome this problem,” says Colin.

Fungicide application timings should be carefully thought out, with a number of different factors considered when forecasting for the first application. Course location, prevailing weather conditions and historical disease pressure, will all influence a specific course’s likelihood of succumbing to disease.

Most clubs will need to make their first preventative fungicide application in the early autumn, before disease has a chance to take hold, and as the grass will still be actively growing,

hedges and weeds also had to be removed or relocated, and pipes fitted to provide water access to all four corners of the green.

DuPont Plantex GroundGrid ensures stability

When Outerspace undertook a project to completely strip out a large residential front garden, removing a traditional linear block-paved drive and side lawn, the landscaping experts knew they needed a high-performance solution to give structural stability to their elegant new design.

Plantex GroundGrid proved to be the answer to ensuring both the integrity and minimal maintenance of the gravel-laid renovation.

The owners wanted ample driveway space, together with the smart look of gravel, while keeping a planted barrier of mature shrubs at street front for both privacy and greenery. Gravel was the desirable covering for the inner circle on many levels, not only for the satisfying crunch underfoot/wheel (which also adds to security), but also for its light reflecting properties.

with this system to accommodate the circular design. This is a lovely property in a high-end area so the aesthetics were very important, but also lasting performance mattered too. What’s more this system allows for crucial drainage to take place while being lower maintenance than simply applying a loose layer of gravel.”

DuPont Plantex GroundGrid is a strong, three-dimensional and permeable geotextile with an innovative honeycombed cellular structure, which can be used with a range of infill materials from soil to stone to sand.

greenkeepers should use a product with a systemic action.

“Products such as Exteris Stressgard (fluopyram and trifloxystrobin) and Dedicate (tebuconazole and trifloxystrobin) have a systemic mode of action, which works to transport the fungicide around the plant, meaning that any areas that don’t come into direct contact with a spray droplet, are protected.

“Both products have a dual action, so, on top of the systemic action from fluopryam or tebuconazole, the trifloxystrobin acts as a local penetrant that acts as a barrier to pathogens entering via the leaf surface,” adds Colin.

Terrey Maufe of Outerspace explains, “After doing considerable homework, we found the ideal solution in Plantex GroundGrid, which allows the gravel to be separate and yet held together, so decreasing the chance of it being moved or exposed.

“The product also offered greater design freedom, as it was easier

Ideal for delivering a firm and stabilised gravel surface, it withstands heavy use from vehicles and pedestrians in a much more durable and effective way than loose laying. Minimising gravel migration and wheel rutting, Plantex GroundGrid offers high tensile strength, and is also highly suited to uneven terrain or to the passage of wheelchairs, prams, buggies, bicycles, motorcycles, and even high heels.

Headland’s Xpedite solves flooding pitch problem

Downside School, attached to Downside Abbey in Somerset, has had particular problems with the banks on the site causing issues with drainage on some of the sites key sports areas.

Headland Amenity’s Xpedite has helped Steve Eade, Head of Grounds and Gardens, to alleviate the problem.

Steve and his team of five, oversee four cricket squares, three football pitches (including an astro-pitch), athletics facilities as well as gardens, woodlands and much more. Downside has historically been a rugby-playing school and it’s here, on one of the site’s seven rugby pitches, that Steve has had particular problems.

“During the playing season high levels of play cause compaction

and this, combined with any spells of significant rainfall, sees water running down the bank and flooding the first team area,” explained Steve. “We use a range of Headland products including Multigreen and C-Complex so I spoke to Alex Hawkes and asked if he had anything which could draw the water down quicker.

“Alex suggested we try Xpedite in conjunction with our aeration, topdressing and overseeding programme.”

Xpedite is a granular soil amendment product that introduces non-compacting pore space into problem rootzones. Applied in Mid-March, Steve says it didn’t take long for the improvements to appear.

Green-tech supply tree shelters for woodland creation

Landscape supplier Green-tech has supplied 9,000 Tubex tree shelters and 80,000 tree spirals for the first phase of the creation of a new 279ha woodland in the Kilpatrick Hills.

The woodland, located just 9 miles from the centre of Glasgow, has been commissioned by Forest Enterprise Scotland, the government agency responsible for managing Scotland’s National Forest Estate.

The main tree planting work is scheduled to take place over three phases across three years with foundation works being completed in spring 2019. Over the project life 763,159

Skarper will launch its new compact chipper for the UK market this year on the Haecksler stand at the landscape show in London.

The Skarper C90 Pro has some exciting new features and seems to be packed with innovative ideas designed with the user in mind. The build quality is very nice, they’ve used Honda engines, German drive

components and the metal work is some of the best we’ve seen.

After visiting Skarpers state of the art European production facility and seeing how the chippers are made it’s not hard to see why Skarper are doing so well. Upson Mowers are the UK supplier for Skarper and Haecksler.

new trees will be planted in the Kilpatrick Hills.

The planting will follow detailed Forest Design Plans that have been through a consultation process with the public and many other interested parties.

The design includes productive broadleaves and conifer species along with many areas of native woodlands and open ground to fulfil all objectives of multifunctional forestry. The new forests will benefit the biodiversity and landscape of the surrounding areas and will, in time, provide great opportunities for recreation.

Boningale plants its expertise at Rathbone Market

As an historic area of London reaches the third phase of its £180 million revitalisation, Boningale Nurseries with its green roof department, GreenSky, continues to contract grow and supply thousands of SkyPlugs for the community’s new green roofs.

At the Rathbone Market redevelopment in Canning Town, Boningale Nurseries has combined its unique horticulture and green roof expertise to help transform the landscape at each stage of the development.

Not only as the Nursery provided hundreds of semi-mature trees and perennials, it has also supplied with GreenSky, bespoke native SkyPlugs.

For the latest phase of the project, this included GreenSky supplying specific biodiverse plug and seed mixes, comprising around 4,000 plugs in total.

“By giving us enough time to contract grow plants to order, we were able to extend beyond our normal stock species and supply more unusual native species, alongside our more popular wildlife-friendly SkyPlugs, to create bespoke habitat areas,” said Maggie.

Frederic Drion of Highfield Forestry commented: “We’ve used Green-tech for a number of years as they supply quality materials at very competitive prices. From enquiries and advice through to orders and delivery we always receive a great service.”

Green-tech supply roof garden materials to Four Pancras Square

Green-tree’s intensive roof garden substrate and gtRoofdrain has recently been installed in the prestigious London development of Four Pancras Square.

Four Pancras Square is a Grade A office building located to the North of the existing King’s Cross railway station, on the new Pancras Square.

The landscaping work was undertaken by Kent-based landscape contractor Willerby Landscapes and Green-tech supplied them its own brand Green-tree Roof Garden intensive substrate for the roof top containerised planting scheme. The substrate was ideal for the

project due to its lightweight texture and good water-holding capacity which ensures healthy plant establishment in harsh rooftop environments.

gtRoofdrain was also incorporated into the project; this forms a lightweight high performance drainage layer, allowing collection and storage of water to irrigate plants during drier periods.

Green-tech’s Head of Sales, Richard Gill said it was a great project to be involved with: “Green-tree Green Roof Substrates are the go-to products for roof garden projects due to the lightweight and workable

properties of the product along with Green-tech’s ability to deliver to more challenging city locations.

“Green-tree Roof Garden Substrates have been used on a number of high profile projects across the country and have received great praise from architects and contractors.”

Real deal for September

With Reesink Turfcare offering ten percent off all genuine Toro cylinders, bought this September, now’s the time to stock up and ensure a good supply and the best possible cylinder cut at the best possible price.

According to agronomists, cylinder mowing is the best option for grass, delivering the cleanest of cuts and healthiest of swards. This is because the blades spin vertically creating a scissoring action against the bottom blade to cut the grass leaves.

With the workings of a cylinder mower so intricate, it would be unwise to upset the equilibrium by putting anything other than genuine parts in your Toro.

Fitting an inferior ‘will-fit’ part

against a genuine Toro cylinder removes the guarantee of a consistently accurate cut right down to 2.5mm with no risk of turf damage.

Toro cylinders balance perfectly with genuine Toro bottom blades, reducing the need for constant cylinder grinding and allowing for more efficient mowing operation.

Available in 4, 6, 8 or 10-blade cylinder configurations to fit all cylinder mowers, including the Greensmaster and Reelmaster ranges, customers can take advantage of the cylinder promotion through their local genuine Toro parts dealer or service centre.

Replay restores courts to as new conditions

Hull YPI Lawn Tennis Club has combated severely compacted and contaminated sand-filled artificial courts with the help of synthetic specialists Replay Maintenance.

The three artificial surfaces had suffered because of minimal maintenance taking place and led Pippa Munzer, and her fellow committee members, to take the decision in April to call in help to bring them back to safe and playable conditions.

To fit in with a scheduled Open Day, Replay conducted their Rejuvenation process, a deep-

clean, across the courts at the end of April.

“Though the weather was against them, the Replay operators worked tirelessly to get the job done. When it became apparent our courts were some of the worst they’d ever faced, the operators called for additional support –determined not to let us down and they didn’t,” says Pippa.

“Since the work the courts haven’t been slippery; they’re free draining and some of our members who tour for league matches now say ours are some of the best courts in the area –

Replay’s tennis court Rejuvenation process uses unique constant compressed air flow through plenum to completely remove all surface debris, de-compact the carpet and extract contaminated infill, restoring the court to an ‘as new’ condition for appearance, drainage and performance.

Forest Pennant completes art commission for public realm

Forest Pennant, the commercial brand of Forest of Dean Stone Firms has completed a public art commission in Bristol, supplying bespoke cut slabs of Pennant sandstone for a reinstated public highway and social space, designed by muf architecture/art for Unite Students.

Forest of Dean Pennant sandstone was specified due to local provenance, sourced from the company’s Barnhill Quarry.

Muf architecture/art also considered the Stone Firms’ independent PAS 2050 verification as a criterion. The Gloucestershire-based stone company also supplied a flight of

steps with eased edges and nonslip resin infill treads and a back plate for a basketball hoop.

The design detail was advanced through visits to the quarry to identify the most cost effective and technically viable way to maximise the dramatic use of very large slabs of stone with a natural oxidised surface, contrasting with the blue/grey cut face.

Paul Blake, production manager, Forest of Dean Stone Firms said: “This design was unlike anything we’d seen before.

“It was the first time a client had created a model using sliced bread! Our stone is a natural

material so needs to be cut and worked to achieve precision.

The design required 15mm joints and for the slabs to be positioned in a descending/ascending order while maintaining the natural surface finish. It was a challenge but we’re incredibly proud of the result.”

Traffic resistant pointing for stone sett driveways

Another prestige stone driveway securely jointed by pointing the 100mm rumbled magma granite setts, has been completed with GftK’s ‘stateof-the-art’ wet-slurry applied, self-compacting and nonstaining, vdw 850 jointing mortar from NCC Streetscape.

This unique material is rapidly becoming the UK’s market leader in natural stone sett paving jointing, as it is in Germany today.

On this project it was selected by the natural stone specialists, PDG Groundworks, because it provides extremely strong and durable joint installations subject

to frequent vehicular traffic, making it especially suitable for driveways and highways applications.

The vdw 850 jointing mortar is capable of accommodating frequent and heavy vehicle traffic loads and in service also prevents weed growth or boring insect infestations, plus it is resistant to de-icing salts, freeze thaw action,

pressure jet-cleaning, and even to mechanical street sweepers.

GftK’s vdw 850 jointing mortar also has additional advantages for both contractors and owners in its application, because it can be applied in the cold and during wet weather, even in the pouring rain.

ACO lights up historic development

A re-development in an historic area of Bristol is the latest UK site to feature ACO’s Eyeleds – a combined surface water management and lighting system.

Located in the popular Harbourside area of Bristol, just a few doors away from the city’s famed Bristol Hippodrome theatre, the Augustine’s

Courtyard development is home to 31,000sqft of prime commercial office space.

However, as part of a general development of the site in 2017, a series of remedial works were instigated by CBRE to provide a more aesthetic feel to key access points, in keeping with the historic setting.

The Eyeleds water management system comprises of a 1m drainage channel fitted with two 500mm gratings, each embedded with a high-performance LED.

Available in blue or white, the LEDs are sealed against water ingress, and have a working life of 100,000 hours. Up to 40 ACO Eyeled lights can be connected together and powered by a single 12V transformer.

Sam Hawkins, Regional Sales Manager for ACO Water Management, commented: “With a view to creating an atmospheric – yet safe – environment within the courtyard, especially of an

evening, they chose to specify the ACO Eyeleds system. This provided the dual function of delivering discreet yet modern floor lighting, while still providing an effective surface water management system for times of heavy rainfall.”

ACO’s Eyeleds water management system is easy to install, and is available with Heelguard gratings to reduce the risks of shoes getting caught or damaged. As such, it is suitable for use in pedestrian and light vehicle applications. The product is also available for use on domestic sites, to add an extra aesthetic edge to driveway and patio projects.

The channel is manufactured from high-strength black polypropylene, meaning it is robust yet lightweight material. A range of cable splitters, extension cables and drainage accessories is also available.

Watco brightens local children’s charity playground

When C7 Architects were briefed with the redesign of a rundown area of the playground at Challengers in Guildford, they asked Watco for help.

Their brief was to turn a previously dark and unused area into a vibrant, interactive musical play area, which would be a safe space for the children to play in, and it was clear that transforming the flooring would be a vital part of this project.

Challengers provides inclusive, fun and safe places where disabled children and young people can spend time with their friends.

C7 Architects turned to local industrial paint manufacturer Watco, based in Godalming, to see if they could assist with the project.

“We spoke with Watco customer service about what

we were hoping to achieve and they recommend two products that were appropriate to the site and that would be a relatively easy application,” commented Leanne Forstick from C7 Architects.

“We came away with some samples and the knowledge of what it would entail to repair the site. We met with Chris Budd, Business Development Manager at Watco, who visited the site and gave us more information on quantities and process.”

The area was transformed into a musical play area, which helps children learn through play; colours, music and textured objects all help to develop sense and skills, allowing the children to relax and forget the stresses of the outside world.

It was important to have a range of colours which are stimulating

for the children and help create an enjoyable and inspiring place for them to play.

After various discussions with the customer service team at Watco, the products supplied were Concrex Rapid, Flowtop and the coloured Anti Slip Traffic Paint which is perfect for playgrounds, plus all the necessary tools and primers for the job.

Charcon partners with local authorities to segregate traffic and cyclists

With motorists merging into the path of cyclists, and vice versa, as one of the most common causes of cyclist accidents, Charcon, the commercial hard landscaping division of Aggregate Industries, is helping a range of local authorities by offering solutions to aid the segregation of traffic and cyclists.

Charcon’s cyclist segregation solutions have already proved successful in London, on the Mayor’s flagship Cycle Superhighway 2 (CS2), where they are helping to reduce the number of accidents in the capital, as well as Bradford, Cambridge, Oxford, Bristol and Nottingham.

They include:

• City cycle kerb - Featuring a half batter along the carriageway, City cycle kerb is capable of withstanding vehicular impact and a splay edge on the cycleway side, which significantly reduces the chance of cyclists catching a pedal. The system is installed on one side of the carriageway to safely segregate cyclists from passing traffic, even when on the blind side of a lorry or bus. Available in standard grey and Eco Countryside® finishes.

• Eco Countryside cycle kerb

- This single piece segregation

unit replicates the aesthetics of natural granite whilst containing 82% recycled and reclaimed material content. It also offers a 33% carbon reduction in comparison to a natural granite alternative.

• Cycle Kerb - Developed in conjunction with Cambridgeshire County Council, Cycle Kerb is produced in a standard concrete finish. The angled profile to the top face of the kerb provides both a distinct visual and tactile division between the carriageway and cycle lane. Available in standard grey and Eco Countryside finishes.

Mitchell & Associates specify full Tobermore paving solution

Situated on the southern banks of the River Liffey overlooking Phoenix Park, Clancy Quay is a luxurious new housing development in Islandbridge, Dublin, from Kennedy Wilson Europe.

Irish landscape architecture firm, Mitchell & Associates, was assigned the task of designing the external landscape surrounding the 46 designer apartments and townhouses on site which have replaced the historic Clancy Barracks.

With the landscape consisting of vast, spacious gardens and courtyards, the design process was challenging, however, Tobermore helped make the job much easier for Mitchell & Associates with the provision of high quality hard landscaping products.

Tobermore’s Tegula is a traditional product with an aged, antique appearance that adds style and character to any application. Similarly, Retro is a vintage-themed product that evokes timeless style and elegance. The unique, slender product shape of Retro creates a rustic look that is reminiscent of ancient European towns and

villages. These two products work beautifully together.

Tobermore’s Manhattan and Fusion are manufactured with a granite aggregate surface layer that creates a striking modern appearance like that of natural granite. Although similar in surface finish, these products serve different functions.

Manhattan is a plank paving system that offers unique aesthetic appeal, creating the impression of space by producing a lengthening or widening effect to the area in which it is laid.

Fusion is a modular paving system that enables the creation of unique mixed patterns to maximise visual impact.

Modern Mayfair Flags from Tobermore were also specified for private pedestrian areas on site and Country Kerb was selected as a kerbing solution. Like the contemporary finishes of Manhattan and Fusion, Mayfair Flags and Country Kerb are also manufactured with granite aggregate surface layer that creates a striking look.

Beautiful paving and driveways with new products from FibreGrid

FibreGrid has launched block paving sealers to improve the appearance and durability of driveways and paving.

Standard Block Paving Sealer, and Heavy Duty Block Paving Sealer are clear, low viscosity, polyurethane resins, designed to penetrate the jointing sand of block paving to form an elastomeric joint.

Both products help reduce the loss of sand from joints, preventing growth of moss and weeds, whilst retaining the flexibility of the paving.

In addition, for spaces where there is a risk of unsightly staining from products such as

Refurbished paving still looks good as new eight years on

The traditional granite sett paving of the historic Hitchin Market Square in Hertfordshire, was refurbished and repointed with GftK’s vdw 850 Paving Joint Mortar eight years ago.

Faced with the prospect of having to lift and re-lay the whole square, at huge cost, the Local Authority and their Consultants undertook some tests and decided to have one last roll of the dice with what looked like a very promising product: GftK’s vdw 850 from NCC Streetscape Ltd.”

Like many old town centres and market squares, this is a very demanding environment for paving, particularly the pointing, due to multiple heavy duty loadings and all sorts of different traffic and exposure,

plus the frequent mechanical street cleaning.

However, this time the project was not only successful, but also completed on time and on budget, because work could continue and be completed using vdw 850, even despite the wet weather and low temperatures throughout (carried out in November), which would have made any cement based or single-pack pointing mortar useless and doomed to failure

oil and fuel, the Heavy Duty Block Paving Sealer will give extra protection and helps in the removal of such stains. Both are available in 5 and 20 litre containers.

The new products cure and seal concrete block paving in one application, other benefits include: prevents sand loss from joints; treats both block and joints in one application; UV light resistance; unaffected by ice, water, most common chemicals; inhibits growth of weed, lichen and moss; and hardwearing, durable, long lasting and prevents dusting of blocks.

Paving the way with Enviro-Pave

Enviro-pave is a surface made from a mix of recycled rubber granules and decorative stone aggregates, available from RTC Safety Surfaces.

It meets all the Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS) requirements.

Once Enviro-Pave has been installed on to a suitable sub-base it reduces the risk of flooding as it is fully porous, meaning it can be used all year round. It is also flexible and therefore less likely to crack and cause a trip hazard.

It is perfect for pathways as it needs minimal maintenance and can be used by pedestrians and cyclists, or even be used on equestrian trails and golf courses. It can even offer protection for tree bases.

The decorative aggregates help give the pathways a more natural look, while the black rubber used one of the most problematic waste materials known to man, and helps reduce landfills.

“Muthing, as a brand, also fits with our preference for working with specialist manufacturers. I personally cut ten acres on test

with an MU280 flail mower and the finish was superb.”

Simon Richard, UK Agent for the Muthing range says: “The Scruton name is an excellent addition to our growing dealer portfolio. They will be offering the full Muthing range and will be pleased to arrange demonstrations.”

Buying cheap can be a costly mistake

Etesia’s mowers have helped a number of grounds teams, local authorities and contractors tackle the challenges facing them in the current financial climate.

The company’s extensive product portfolio also proves that by paying for extra quality you make significant savings in the long-term.

With frequent cuts and smaller teams with fewer resources for servicing and maintenance; more and more people are choosing Etesia machines for their multicapacity roles and their reliability, longevity and efficiency.

Karl Brotherhood, head of grounds at the prestigious Solihull School, has claimed that his new Etesia Hydro 124 DN ride-on mower is ‘perfect’ for helping him fulfil a number maintenance tasks.

“I looked at another machine from a very well-known brand but I suspected that it would block up quite easily. On the other hand, Ian from Etesia knew everything about the machine and we were really pleased with his knowledge. A big factor in buying a new machine is the back-up you receive from not only the dealer but also the manufacturer and I could tell that we would get a great service if we bought the Etesia machine.

“The first thing I noticed was how much better it was compared to the zero turn that we had. With our other machine we had to have perfect conditions for it to do a good job otherwise it just wouldn’t do it. I like the fact that the grass box tells you when it’s full and the high lift is a massive help for us too because it saves us double moving everything,” he said.

Grillo enhances quality fleet

Grillo is a major supplier of grass cutting machinery with exceptional expertise in cut and collect out front machines.

All the products are built to the highest specifications and perform in all conditions, setting an industry standard.

The FD range of models start with a 113cm out front with 280 ltr grass box through to the flagship 4wd FD2200TS. This machine has a 155cm cutter deck with hydraulic lift and push button height control. Its latest 48hp Yanmar diesel engine

supplies enormous torque at low rpm pushing the cut grass into a twin speed turbo.

The hi tip 1400ltr grass box has a disperser inside for even grass compaction in all weather.

“I’d seen the Etesia machine in a number of trade magazines and it had caught my interest. I had a chat with Dave Tullett from Midlands Grounds Machinery who brought the machine down to the school for a demonstration along with Ian Collington (southern area sales manager for Etesia) and it was obvious that this machine was perfect for what we wanted.

Creative Gardening Solutions, based in the West Midlands, have been using two Etesia ride-on machines for a number of contracts in the area. Company director Matthew Tromans insists on continually investing in new machinery and claims Etesia products are the best on the market:

“Every penny has been reinvested in staff training and

machinery and because we have such high standards we insist on using only the best products - that’s why we came to Etesia.

“We were starting to win more sites and contracts so we decided that we needed to speed things up a little bit. The Hydro 80 was perfect – it wasn’t too big, it could fit through small gates, it was quick and it could collect just as well as any pedestrian mower – better in some cases. Quite simply, it

was out performing everything else that we had which included machines from some very wellknown brands.

“I tested a whole host of machines which included pretty much every premium ride-on mower in the marketplace. I was willing to spend a large amount of money but it wasn’t about the money – it was about the quality of cut. So I contacted Etesia and they came to give me a demonstration. In fact, I had tried another mower the day before the demonstration and I thought my mind was made up. I knew that the Hydro 124 DN would have to be at least twice as good for me to go for it.

“I trialled it and it was absolutely brilliant. I tried to break it and I tried to clog itI’ve been doing this for a long time now and I know how to clog a mower but I just couldn’t do it. I knew that this was one hell of a machine and that we just had to have one. I took the demo mower there and then and I even purchased another Hydro 80 machine as well.”

Kubota UK launches new zero turn ride-on mower

Turbo power from Italian manufacturer

Gianni Ferrari has two additional machines to top the Turbo and Turbo Z ranges.

Zero turn Turbo Z 440 has seen significant developments to the traction unit while the new DualCut mulching and rear discharge deck has been introduced.

Kubota UK has launched its new zero turn ride-on mower, the Z122R utilises the proven technology, quality and performance that professionals have come to expect in Kubota products.

Specifically designed to complete 360° turns on the spot, the Z122R offers homeowners unlimited flexibility and manoeuvrability around tight obstacles and complex landscapes, whilst the 42” cutting deck covers large surface areas quickly and efficiently.

Ergonomically designed with comfort in mind, the Z122R features a high-backed cushion seat and extra legroom for maximum comfort, whilst the two levers for steering and acceleration are simple and convenient to use.

Ariens has the x-factor

The latest range of zero turn mowers from the Ariens Company is the IKON-X, built with a fully fabricated, heavyduty tubular steel frame.

The IKON-X is driven and steered by the rear wheels via an independent transmission and uses levers for braking and steering; the deck is belt driven.

An adjustable high-back, adjustable seat includes arm rests and there’s a vibration reducing

floor mat on the spacious operator platform.

Powered by a Kawasaki 726cc engine, top speed is 12kph. Available in two models, the IKON-X 42 with a 107cm cut width and the 132cm cut IKON-X 52, the commercial quality cutter deck is fabricated from 10-gauge steel, and the 13 cutting heights from 3.8-11.4cm are adjusted by a dial on the control panel.

Ariens Enquiry 68

This heavy duty deck has a cutting width of 155cm and offers quick conversion from mulching to rear discharge. It also lifts hydraulically into the vertical position for servicing.

In addition to the Dual-Cut deck, the machine can also be used with various attachments such as the flail mower, snow blade or other non-collecting decks from the Turbo 4 range.

Styling updates include a new light kit. The Turbo Z 440 is now powered by a Kubota V1505-T four-cylinder diesel engine, with the hydrostatic transmission using a Danfoss pump and motors, with reduction gear boxes in an oil bath. These improvements are joined by a cardan shaft PTO, foldable ROPS and two-wheel oscillating rear axle.

Also new is the Turbo 4 Fifty, which comes equipped with a 1400 litre capacity collector, with 230cm dump height. A new collecting turbine is designed to offer increased air flow, longer life and easier maintenance, with the option to disengage the collecting turbine when using non-collecting attachments.

Better by design with John Deere

Permanent four-wheel drive gives increased capacity on slopes and the new 180 RCA collecting deck has a 170cm cutting width and opposite

this machine.

John Deere’s latest version of the X950R rear-discharge diesel lawn tractor features a new, automotive-style digital dashboard ensuring that important machine notifications are clearly displayed. Increased productivity is also offered by the ‘best cut zone’ feature, which enables the operator to always run the machine at its optimum speed, while still maintaining a high quality cut.

In addition, a newly designed bagger empty assist system

uses an ultrasound sensor in the bag and a digital display on the dashboard to indicate the filling level. This tells the operator how much material has already been collected in the bagger, and helps to determine the best possible moment for it to be emptied.

With this system, blocking of the grass chute is reduced and machine re-adjustments for different grass conditions are not required.

SCAG’s fusion approach available from STM

STM Co Ltd represents SCAG machinery in the UK and Europe.

In 1990 SCAG introduced the STZ, its first zero-turn ride-on mower, with the operator sitting in the centre of the unit, almost directly above the cutting deck for maximum compactness and manoeuvrability when coupled with the twin-drive zero-turn drive system.

The range now consists of five variants; there are choices ranging from high-end domestic, high-speed, or high productivity. Cutting widths are from 90cm to 1.81m and there are grass

collection and mulching accessories. The Turf Tiger, the top of the range machine, at up to 35hp petrol or 25hp diesel, has just gone through a redesign.

SCAG believes in the compact, low centre of gravity machine principle for its benefits of manoeuvrability and visibility, and have extended this to demonstrate the fusion of pedestrian and ride-on in the V-Ride product, a unit that can be used as a walk-behind or instantly converted to a stand-on.

High-grass, steep slope, difficult terrain

Mowing on steep and difficult terrain has always been a challenge for the machine operator and the AS 940 and AS 940 XL ride on brushcutters, available from PSD Groundscare, have been especially developed for this demanding application.

Equipped with 27hp, 4wd, limited-slip differential and cross blade, the AS 940 easily mows dense, high grass and undergrowth on terrain where

other mowers would have been forced to give up.

With ride-on brushcutters, steep slopes can be mown conveniently and economically. However, there are always areas where mowing is very unpleasant or unsafe for the operator, including steep terrain, loose substrate, mowing under trees and bushes, along hedges and even areas around wasp nests.

Bartram Mowers celebrates 45 years and the renewal of its Royal Warrant

Bartram Mowers of Norwich is celebrating the achievement of two milestones this year, with its 45th year of trading and the renewal of the prestigious Royal Warrant.

Founded in 1972 by the current chairman, Barry Bartram, with a staff of four people the company operated from rented premises on the Norwich Airport industrial estate.

Today it employs over 40 people and operates from two freehold sites in Norwich and Ipswich.

In 1978 Bartram Mowers was awarded the Royal Warrant for supplying machinery to Her Majesty The Queen’s Sandringham Estate and the Warrant has just been renewed until 2023.

Over the past 45 years there have been many developments within the company and the garden machinery industry itself. There are now hybrid powered machines cutting golf courses and home owners benefit from robot mowers which automatically trim their lawns. Battery powered hand held machines such as hedgecutters and strimmers have also seen dramatic increases in popularity.

Whilst sales of machinery through the two showrooms continue to be very important and a significant part of the business, the company has also seen a large increase in sales through its website Lawnmowers Direct.

Managing Director Mark Bartram commented, “Although we still enjoy providing our

Lastec ZT commercial series leads the way

Lastec is the company that revolutionized the turf industry with the introduction of the Articulator over 25 years ago.

Prior to its introduction wide area mowers used 72” (1.8mtr) or wider rigid decks that scalped and missed grass on contoured ground.

Articulators use multiple rotary decks that individually follow the contours of the ground with cutting widths up to 11 feet (3.3m) that mow grass with the accuracy of a small push mower.

Today, every major manufacturer has followed Lastec’s lead by offering their own version of an articulating rotary, but since articulating rotary mowers are Lastec’s only product line, the company’s focus allows it to maintain our lead in this unique product market.

Articulating deck mowers aren’t a new concept for Lastec, but for the first time in the commercial mower market Lastec is now able to compete with the fixed deck mowers with a much more competitive price.

Lastec has duplicated the same articulator qualities that everybody knows and loves into a smaller deck, which is available in a 61”(1.54M) cut and a 73”(1.85M) cut. Lastec’s quality product and service have always been superior in this industry and will continue with the commercial line.

Wessex makes it two for one

Take the many advantages of an outfront mower and give it the ability to cut both long grass and sports turf and you’re surely on to a winner.

The Wessex ProLine FRX-150 is just such a mower, designed to hitch up to most leading out front power units with Power Take Off. The FRX-150 has rapidly found favour with councils and

contractors, offering the benefits of having a neat and compact allround mower which is effectively two mowers in one.

Cutting verges calls for excellent visibility and manoeuvrability in confined areas with the ability to work around road signs, trees and other obstacles. It also demands a mower that will cut long grass quickly and effectively.

The FRX-150 is a flail mower and delivers in that respect leaving a far superior cut quality on long growth than a rotary mower. The compact design is close-coupled to the power unit, minimising weight on the linkage and the ContiFlow deck

ensures maximum suction effect, making it capable across a wide range of applications. The deck follows contours accurately with its own wheels and a full width rear roller and offers a 1.5m working width finish.

Combine ease of use, a simple cutting height adjustment and the benefits of flail mowing and it’s easy to see why the Wessex ProLine FRX-150 has become such a popular choice. It makes a perfect partner for power units from Kubota, Stiga, John Deere, Iseki, Shibaura and other similar machines.

New study saves time and money for contractors

A recent two-year study in the US professional landscaper arena, recorded an average improved productivity in commercial mowing between 20% - 25% which resulted in improved margins for the operator.

The study, conducted by manufacturer Walker Mowers, compared four of their machines against popular competitive products on four typical sites.

The report concluded that contrary to popular thinking, the highest ground speed does not mean a higher productivity.

Seven different criteria that an operator can measure were reviewed including steering, balance, maneuverability and trimming capabilities.

A two-step productivity calculator on their US invites commercial mower operators to take a look for themselves entering typical weekly hours, number of weeks per year spent mowing and their hourly charge out rate.

More than just a mower

The Ventrac 4500 is more than just a very good mower with multiple cutting units; look upon it as more of a ‘multi-tool’ or ‘Swiss Army Knife’.

This agile, power-packed compact tractor is in a class of its own. An innovative design combines all-wheel drive, an articulating frame and a powerful 25 hp Kubota diesel engine providing unmatched stability and control to get a wide range of jobs done done.

Available with five different mowing decks for multiple applications and Ventrac’s unique coupling system, the experienced operator can switch between mowing options in less than one minute.

The HM and HP Mower Decks utilise a rugged all-steel frame design providing high efficiency grass discharge for a better quality of cut by moving more grass efficiently through the deck tunnel. With the removal of two pins beneath the cross frame, the deck can be easily tilted to a near vertical position for maintenance and storage.

The Contour Mower features a 2.13 metre (83 inch) working width making quick work of any mowing job regardless of the terrain and without sacrificing quality of cut. The MR740 Triplex Reel Mower is designed to be the ultimate trim and surround mower.

The HQ680 Tough Cut Mower is designed for mowing high grass,

Helping Glenn and his team keep on-top of such heavy usage is the Dennis G860 cylinder mower, which they use on a variety of different sports surfaces.

thick weeds and heavy brush. A large baffled front opening helps direct materials into the deck and helps hinder debris from escaping.

While slopes and hillsides add aesthetics and dimension to any landscape, those same hills and slopes can be very dangerous to mow without the right type of slope mowing equipment. The Ventrac 4500 offers a unique combination of benefits that no other piece of equipment can offer, providing safe solutions to your slope mowing needs on gradients up to 30 degrees.

With more than 30 different attachments, the Ventrac 4500 is a truly versatile power unit, designed to suit a wide range of landscaping applications. The Ventrac 4500 is distributed in the UK and Ireland by Price Turfcare, based near Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk.

He oversees the maintenance of around 40 acres of sports fields which includes seven rugby pitches, four cricket squares, one football pitch, one hockey pitch and two grass tennis courts. With over 400 pupils attending the school and playing sport on a regular basis, as well as the facilities being used by local and county sporting teams – it is safe to say that the pitches have a high amount of usage.

“The Dennis G860 is a great bit of kit,” says Glenn. “We use it for cutting the cricket squares, for cutting the grass hockey pitches, both rugby and football pitches, and when we have county fi xtures or cup games we will box off the cricket outfields because this gives it a much faster, truer surface so the ball will carry quicker.

“In my opinion the G860 is one of the best machines you can get and

with the interchangeable cassette system, it is extremely versatile.”

As Glenn says, the Dennis G860 features an interchangeable cassette system, and with a simple one minute changeover, users have the option of fitting eleven different types of heads including scarifiers, verticutters, brushes, spikers, and slitters as well as six or eight bladed cutting cylinders.

Hovering over the toughest slopes

Cobra has the UK’s largest choice of lawnmowers, with almost 50 different models available.

Earlier this year Cobra added to its mower offering by introducing two AirMow models to its range.

The new AirMow51B is a 20” petrol hover mower that is driven by an incredibly powerful Briggs & Stratton 575EX engine with ReadyStart technology that

guarantees easy starting every time - just pull the starter cord.

The 575EX is an E SERIES engine that is specially designed to reduce exhaust emissions and surpasses the European Exhaust Emissions standards by at least 25%. AirMow lawnmowers can cut on slopes up to 45 degrees.

Bobcat extends forestry cutter attachment range

Bobcat has extended the company’s new range of forestry cutter attachments with a third model – the new FRC150ST –for use on the smaller Bobcat S630/H and S650/H skid-steer loaders and T590/H and T650/H compact tracked loaders.

The new FRC150ST complements Bobcat’s recently launched FRC150HT and FRC200HT high torque forestry cutter attachments, which are compatible with the larger Bobcat T770H and T870H compact tracked loaders, S770H and S850H skid-steer loaders and the A770H all-wheel steer loader

and provide cutting widths of 1.5 and 2.0 m, respectively.

Based on feedback from the field, the 1.5 m wide FRC150ST incorporates many improvements over the previous FRC150 model.

Among the improvements, the FRC150ST is manufactured almost entirely from Hardox, with a specially designed new fixed motor offering greater output and efficiency. The enhanced design also offers a new, lighter drum, with carbide teeth, new hose routing and greater performance and manoeuvrability.

The Forestry Applications Kit protects the loader and operator from flying objects and debris.

For work in confined spaces in woodland and forests, front and

rear light guards are added to the loader to protect the lights.

ECHO scissor head ensures a safer cut

The new ECHO ASK-RW23D scissor head, a rotary scissor attachment suitable for most ECHO brushcutters, helps to reduce this risk.

It works on the principle of a 20:1 reduction ratio gearbox and two contra-rotating blades that actually ‘snip’ the grass or brush - just like a pair of scissors. This means you have safer and more precise cutting.

Grass, weeds or brush simply drops where it is cut, making the ASK-RW23D an ideal choice to use when required to work near people, office windows or parked cars.

Highly versatile, the ASKRW23D scissor head can trim up close to solid obstacles, such as trees, walls and kerbs without kickback or damage. Edging golf

course bunkers and trimming grass in shallow water are easily tackled. The flat bottom design enables the operator to place the cutting head close to the ground when uncovering hidden landmarks, such as drain covers.

The ASK-RW23D rotary scissor head comes with an 18 over 15 tooth blade kit, and an optional 28 over 24 tooth fine cut blade kit is also available for getting an even finer finish on grass and lawn edges.

The cutting head is well-balanced, making it easy to maneuver and comfortable to use. The ASKRW23D scissor head mirrors ECHO’s commitment to quality, providing their customers with commercial grade and innovative products.

A Little Wonder from Schiller

The Little Wonder hydrostatic brushcutter, available from Schiller Grounds Care, is just

what you need for dealing with the rough and tough weeds, brambles and brush.

The Hydro BRC-24 combines rugged design with advanced features, not least the hydrostatic drive for ease of operation and reduced fatigue for the operator.

Engage the hydrostatic transaxle in forward for speeds up to 4.2mph (6.75kmh) and 2.6mph

Power comes from a durable 390cc Honda engine and there’s a Noram mechanical blade clutch for forward and instant reverse drive propulsion. The blade mechanism stops the blade virtually instantaneously for operator safety.

The Little Wonder Hydro BRC24 is controlled by solid rods, not wearable cables, connecting the operator controls to the transmission, mower deck and

Toro Introduces PowerPlex Lithium Ion solutions

Toro, a global leader in turf and landscape maintenance equipment, has introduced the all-new PowerPlex family of handheld 40V Max lithium ion products to its range late this Spring.

The family of hand-held products includes a brushless DC blower, a brushless DC chainsaw, a 61cm hedge trimmer, a 33cm string trimme /edger and a 35cm brushless DC string trimmer –each is designed to be highly productive and easy to use.

Both PowerPlex string trimmers feature variable-speed trigger control to handle various applications and offer a targeted run time of around 40 minutes on a single charge. The products use a 40V lithium ion rechargeable battery, with one battery pack to fit all the different

products. Included with the range is the T90, a 40-Volt Max*, 2.5 amp-hour and 90 watt-hour, lithium ion battery, taking a short time to charge but offering long usage. An optional extra is the T180, a 40-Volt Max*, 5.0 AmpHour and 180 watt-hour battery.

Both batteries include an onboard power meter, and the T180 battery features an integrated LED flashlight, USB charging port for charging tablets, mobile phones and other small devices, and a folding handle for simple transport. Batteries are interchangeable between products, allowing operators to easily switch from one task to another.

And for peace of mind each product comes with a 3 Year warranty. PowerPlex is now available from Toro’s Dealer network.

Excavator-mounted hedgecutters cut where others cannot get

Robustrack Ltd, UK importer of Italian excavator attachments, is based in North Yorkshire with nationwide links and strong Italian connections.

The Robustrack team believes that delivering good quality service is as important as delivering good quality products. That’s why they talk about delivering solutions.

A solution that starts with a professional but friendly approach to understanding the customer needs and requirements, that continues with supplying a ‘top of the range’ Italian-made product delivered for immediate use, with an after-sales service

aimed at reducing machine downtime to a minimum.

A complete range of spare parts is available at the Robustrack warehouse with a next day delivery service. The company’s “online” and direct approach means quick reaction timesbeing there when the customers need it.

Four years ago Robustrack started importing their full range of hedge cutters for excavators into the UK. They fit machines as small as a 1,2 Ton, with a 600mm cutting width flail mower head, up to 20 Ton, with a mulcher 1200mm wide that can also be delivered with the forestry setup.

The extensive range of flail mower heads is supplied with heavy duty hammer blades to cut grass, brambles, growth and hedges up to 150 mm depending on the model. Should a better ‘finish’ be required for a job, Y shape knives are available to fit any model (Y-shaped blades are standard for the 600 mm cutting width model due to the reduced dimensions of the hedgecutter).

It is interesting to note that Robustrack flail mower heads work with the hammer line and therefore don’t require a third pipe, free flowing directly to the oil tank, to be operated. The block of valves installed in every hedge cutter deals with the issue

of the back pressure: if, during the cutting phase, the movement of the flail head is suddenly stopped by an obstacle, the back pressure going up the return pipe is released by the block of valves. In this way damage to the seal and / or the hydraulic motor or the flail head is avoided.

The flail heads are supplied with standard or quick hitch mounting brackets.

The rise of battery-powered tools

Pellenc, distributed exclusively in the UK by Etesia UK, was the world’s first manufacturer to introduce lithium-ion technology in portable power tools.

Light, odourless, noise-free, with no starting problems and enough power to enable professional users to work for a full day on a single charge, it’s no wonder more and more professional users are turning to Pellenc.

“There are definitely more industry professionals choosing to use electric and battery powered products as opposed to fuel based ones,” says Dave Tullett, owner of Midlands Groundscare Machinery (MGM).

“Perhaps there is a realisation that a reliance on fossil fuels is not always going to be possible.

“These battery powered products not only provide the operator with more comfort and less vibration but they are also healthier. Let us not forget about the savings either. Five litres of fuel will cost on average £6.50 per day whilst a Pellenc battery powered product works out at about 85p per day. That’s a signifi cant amount of savings over a long period of time.”

Although battery powered equipment has been longstanding in the marketplace, it had never, until recently, quite reached the expectations and demands of the professional user.

Pellenc quickly embraced the technology and firmly established itself as the forerunner in the “Zero Emission” professional power tools market, for the maintenance of urban and greenspaces. Now, with years of experience with this technology, Pellenc has developed the most comprehensive range on the market -leading the way in terms of performance, lightness and durability.

Pellenc’s battery-powered range features an impressive portfolio of products – including brushcutters - and a number of industry professionals have been quick to praise the benefits of the equipment.

South Hams District Council in Devon recently purchased a range of Pellenc products in a bid to reduce its carbon footprint.

“The reasons that we opted for the Pellenc products are simple; we have a lot of offices and staff in Follarton House and we host weddings and other functions there,” says David Burkes, charge hand gardener for South Hams District Council.

Battery range offers quality results

Aching fingers and joints, headaches and smelly fumes could be a thing of the past as traditional petrol powered tools make way for battery power.

The Bosch range of professional cordless garden tools includes a mobile power unit, brushcutters and a longer-life 36v 9.0Ah weatherproof battery.

All products in the Bosch Professional range share the same concept - powered by Lithium-ion batteries they perform as petrol equivalents but with low noise, low vibrations and savings on running costs.

They are also more convenient to use and maintain than petrol models and easy to start up.

Joao Barufi, who leads the Bosch Garden Tools division in the UK. “We’ve now applied our award-winning battery technology across a wide variety of cutting-edge professional tools to complete the range. The convenience and low-vibration of our quiet cordless products, coupled with top-end petrol performance is sure to impress.”

A serious issue for regular users of powered garden equipment is known as White Finger or HAVS

(Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome) and is virtually eliminated by the low vibration electric tools.

The entire range benefits from low noise emissions with new models quieter than some domestic vacuum cleaners. Not only do they provide peace and quiet when used in public spaces, but also offer higher user comfort; extending the hours in which gardeners can work.

The batteries are weatherresistant and compatible with all products in the range – mowers, hedgecutters, leaf blowers and brushcutters. They feature a fast

“Any equipment we use needs to be quiet to operate as we don’t want to disrupt the office staff or intrude on any visitors – something we just couldn’t do with petrol-powered equipment.”

A unique feature of the Pellenc equipment, is that instead of trying to incorporate the battery into the tools, the company decided to put the battery into a harness and into a rucksack. As a result the weight is distributed on the user’s back as opposed to in the hand; resulting in a lighter tool and more flexibility.

Champions ready for kick-off with first class facilities

Reigning PRO12 champions

Scarlets took on South African newcomers Kings in the opening round of the newlook Guinness PRO14 at Parc y Scarlets. Laurence Gale caught up with Head Groundsman Luke Jenkins ahead of the historic new season.

It is a rugby club with a very long, rich tradition, a team that

I learnt a lot working with Dean and soon got to understand the rigors and pressures of maintaining a natural turf pitch in a stadium environment especially through the winter months. I soon enrolled at Pencoed College and successfully achieved diploma levels 2 and 3 in horticulture (sports Turf) thus helping to have a better understanding of soil science and plant water relationships.

role of stadium manager when the new stadium opened in 2008.

Q: How many fixtures do you cater for at the Stadium?

A: Two teams predominately play at the Parc y Scarlets stadium, the Scarlets, who are one of the four professional Welsh regional rugby union teams and Llanelli RFC who between them play over 40 plus home games at the stadium.

We also cater for many Academy matches and end of season finals taking the total number of fixtures to well over 50. This along with captain runs and specific training sessions puts a lot of stress on the grass plant particularly during the winter months.

The three main advantages of having a Fibrelastic pitch compare to other fibre reinforced sand dominant pitches is a reduction in surface hardness, an increase in surface resilience and a further increase in rootzone cohesion.

When the stadium pitch was constructed over 1,200 tonnes of Fibrelastic fibres where incorporated into top 100mm of the rootzone, every year we top up one of our pitches with 150 tonnes of new fi bre material during our end of season renovations.

generally cutting daily during the summer months and begin easing off once we get into late October to between 2/3 cuts per week.

After matches we use our John Deere pedestrian rotaries to help clean up the pitch, prior to brushing/ mowing with our G860s, depending on the weather and when our next match may be we will aerate the pitch.

Having no lighting rigs means, we must develop a dense, deep rooting sward to get us through the winter months, this is achieved with a balanced feeding and aeration programme.

As for aeration we have our own SISIS Aeraid and Weidenmann to aerate the pitch, we have to be careful when we use them, as we do not want to destabilise the pitch prior to matches.

Q: What is on your wish list?

A: Well it goes without saying, it would be great if we could invest in some lighting rigs and maybe the opportunity to get a Toro Procore pedestrian aerator to complement our other aerators.

beat the All Blacks and other international touring sides and that has produced a conveyor belt of household rugby names. In the professional era, Llanelli have become Scarlets and remain one of Europe’s top sides with British Lions Ken Owens, Jonathan Davies and the newly signed Leigh Halfpenny in their ranks.

International quality players demand world class playing surfaces and training pitches and Luke Jenkins works hard to provide just that.

Q: How long have you been working at Scarlets

A: I began working at the stadium in 2008, as part of the catering and refreshments department, my job was to ensure the smooth running of match day catering. I spent two years working in this role, however, in 2010, I successfully applied for the vacant Assistant Head Groundsman post working under Dean Gilasbey.

I took the chance and stepped up into a Senior Groudsperson role and continued my development from there. I now have two assistants in Jack Davies and Jack Lynch who help me maintain the stadium and training pitches along with the amenity grass and gardens around the stadium.

I also have plenty of support from the Stadium Manager Dave Healey, who himself was the Head Groundsman at the old Stradey Park and Swansea City FC grounds before he took up the

Having no lighting rigs certainly makes this job more challenging, we try to overcome this by ensuring we developed an approach to keeping a healthy sward and promoting a dense rooting system to help the grass plant get through the busy winter fixtures.

We also have, to accommodate concerts, this June (3 and 10) we had Jess Glynne and UB40 playing at the stadium, as soon as they finished we get on with the job of renovating the pitch. It took four days to complete overseeding with Barenbrug Bar 7.

Q: What are your pitch maintenance regimes?

A: The stadium pitch and training pitch are Mansfield Sand Fibre Elastic constructed pitches, having a 300mm depth of rootzone, over an undersoil heating and drainage system.

A typical Fibrelastic Rootzone comprises 80% by volume sand and 20% by volume organic matter (ntain grass cover soil and/or compost) reinforced with both Polypropylene and Elastane fibres.

This June we koroed off both pitches, incorporated 150 tonnes of Fibre into the stadium pitch and 150 tonnes of new sand into the training pitch, power harrowed, re levelled and overseeded.

Once the seed had germinated we began the process of getting the sward to tiller and increase root density by a regular maintenance programme of mowing, feeding and aeration.

We use Dennis G860’s to mow the pitch at a cutting height of between 28-30mm depending on the time of the year, we are

We feed on a little and often basis using a range of granular and liquid feeds, we also use a biostimulant Maxstim to help reduce plant stress. We also apply some fungicides, Instrata and Medallion TL to control attacks of Anthracnose and leaf spot. We have an integral pitch pop up watering system we use to help water the pitch, however, we tend to get a lot of rain in this part of the country, last year we had over 90 consecutive days of rain, which again can bring its own set of problems, we tend to get a lot of algae in the shaded areas of the pitch.

It is important we keep up with the latest industry innovations about machinery and products & services, keeping ourselves educated and up to speed with these technical changes is vital to ensure we can produce the best playing surface.

Spread for every eventuality

KUHN Amenity Pro offer a comprehensive range of drop and broadcast salt and sand spreaders from 55 to 1500 litres.

To keep you going all winter, the range starts with the K51, a 55 litres capacity pedestrian/ tow behind spreader as well as a wide range of three point linkage implements from 120L capacity with broadcast width from 0.5 meters to 9 meters depending on the spreader and the type of material.

Hopper shapes are designed to optimise material flow and easy loading, adjustable stainless steel deflector, reinforced drive gearbox, adjustable drop point (depending on model). The KUHN Amenity Pro spreaders operate successfully in difficult conditions year on year.

If the bulk of your area is made of narrow paths, the KUHN UKS inline spreader (80,100,120cm) could be ideal machine. Available as in hydraulic or PTO drive with capacity from 165 litres the UKS has a stainless steel hoper base tray. The spreader can be front or rear mounted.

For the most precise applications, KUHN Amenity Pro spreaders can be fitted with the Quantron system providing efficient management and tractability of the material you are spreading.

All KUHN Amenity Pro salt and sand spreaders are designed to also spread accurately seed and fertilizer by simply changing the agitator. As a small contractor or local authority, making your machine more versatile is the key.

The KUHN Amenity Pro range also features a wide range of machinery designed to prepare and maintain all green spaces, parks and road sides.

In keeping with the KUHN philosophy, these implements

are robust and reliable, yet designed to fit behind a compact tractor making them the ideal choice for groundsmen, landscaper and contractors.

Electronic controls for E+S salt spreaders

As air temperatures drop and the first frosts and snow of the year arrive then grit spreading begins in earnest with the sight of spreaders becoming commonplace in towns and cities across the country.

The E+S range of salt and grit spreaders available from Amazone has always offered impressive serviceability with its stainless steel hopper tip and the patented spreading assembly that can be removed for maintenance in seconds.

Drive to the spreading disc is via the tractor PTO or hydraulic drive. The steep hopper walls ensure that any type of spreading material will flow out onto the spreading disc and the spreading mechanism can be set without tools to spread to the left, right or centrally across the back of the tractor. This means that the spreading material can be thrown out across the pavement whilst running along the kerbside in either direction.

The E+S, up to now, is controlled for application rate by means of a mechanical stop and the on/off for the spreading operation via a tractor spool valve; the width of throw being set via the manual adjustment of the stainless steel spread width limiter. The limitations of this system is that if more material is needed just for a few yards then the operator has to dismount and make the adjustment.

The new in-cab EasySetE+S terminal can be used to switch on the spreading operation as well as being able to adjust the spread rate including a ‘+100%’ button that gives an immediate boost to the output for those badly affected areas of ice and snow.

The optional hopper-mounted LED work lights can also be switched on and off via the incab control box.

The full EasySetE+S system offers all of the above plus the ability to alter the spreading width electrically also from the tractor seat via a second electric actuator for added convenience and flexibility. The driver, by being in control of the spreading width, gets maximum impact

of the spread material by concentrating it on the paved areas and not putting it in the flowerbeds.

Where a more exact regulation of spread rate is important then the state-of-the-art AmadosE+S not only relieves the stress on the operator by making the use of the machine more comfortable but also gives improved flexibility.

Ground Control strengthens winter maintenance capabilities

Ground Control, has acquired winter and exterior maintenance specialist Litter Boss in a move that will not only add hundreds of customers to its portfolio, but also bring the combined skills and experience of over 500 staff into the business.

The joining of these two organisations cements Ground Control as the largest specialist gritting and winter maintenance provider in the UK. The deal was supported by a £16 million funding package from Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking.

Litter Boss, which has its HQ in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, was established over 30 years ago, and has a long history of growth thanks to its renowned excellent service delivery.

Primarily focused on winter and exterior maintenance alongside a standalone internal cleaning

business, the company has great synergies with Ground Control’s existing client base, not only adding approximately 3,500 sites but also significantly enhancing density across the UK.

“Bringing Litter Boss into the Ground Control family is a strategic move to increase our winter maintenance capabilities across the UK,” explains Simon Morrish, CEO for Ground Control.

“The combined infrastructure, people and innovative systems of our two companies expands our ability to offer customers a worry-free solution for their business continuity needs. Combine this with a comprehensive suite of products and services, and what we have is a market leading winter and exterior maintenance capability that is available to all 24/7.”

Crossfire offers a quality solution

Kersten UK’s Crossfire spreaders come with features that protect the vehicle from coming into contact with excess salt, such as sides which overhang the body of the vehicle they sit in, Sean adds.

The larger motors will be less likely to stall due to blockages and other features such as inverted V’s over the salt delivery system and vibrators will reduce the frequency of blockages in the first place.

Precise application of the salt is crucial for some and the Crossfire has baffles over the spinner, which control the salt placement, preventing unwanted burning of grass verges and salt being wasted in ditches or gutters.

Adjustable spinner speed will control how far the salt is flung, and an adjustable auger will control the volume of salt that reaches the spinner.

HME continues to plough ahead

SnowEx salt and grit spreaders are the professional

Designed and manufactured to perform in the harshest of environments, SnowEx is built to be tough.

Polaris announce 2018 model highlights and updates

Toro Introduces new TimeMaster

Toro has announced the launch of two new Timemaster models, featuring Briggs & Stratton engines and available with either recoil or electric start options.

These mowers are perfectly suited to homeowners with a large lawn, as the 76cm cutting width covers more ground than smaller mowers and may reduce mowing time by as much as 40%.

Quick Stow handle-bar stores vertically for easy compact storage and adjusts to ensure a comfortable mowing experience for any operator.

Polaris has announced its 2018 off-road vehicle line-up highlights, with the introduction of a brand-new model and a host of significant updates across the RANGER, RZR and Sportsman families, including an all-new chassis, improved performance and enhanced technology.

Following the introduction of several new models for MY2017, Polaris continues to lead the charge into 2018 with innovative new products and solutions to further enhance user experience. Headline news for RANGER is the introduction of a brand-new model for the EMEA region, as the RANGER XP 1000 makes its debut.

Following extensive development and testing at the Polaris R&D facility in Wyoming, the new RANGER boasts class leading power (82hp), torque (61lb-ft), ground clearance (330mm), suspension travel (280mm) and towing capacity (over 1100kg).

Featuring the proven ProStar 1000 Twin Cylinder engine, the RANGER XP 1000

features a new one-piece frame providing improved chassis stiffness and automotive levels of refinement with a redesigned interior to provide more storage and capability.

Featuring bold and aggressive new styling on the outside, developments continue on the inside of the cab too. Dual-Sweep analogue dials and a 4” LCD Rider Information Center provide comprehensive information to the driver, while thicker seat foam provides better comfort. Practicality is boosted with a flip-up passenger seat enabling true flat floor storage in the cab too. This is further enhanced with additional cubby space.

The RANGER XP 1000 is due to arrive towards the end of 2017. Other updates for the RANGER line-up in 2018 include fully sealed suspension bushings on the RANGER XP 900, providing improved durability and maintenance free operation for less downtime when work needs to get done.

Both models feature the Automatic Drive System with traction assist. This automatically adjusts the mower’s pace to the walking speed of the user and assists with maintaining a constant speed even when used on more challenging terrain. The

Continuing with the ease of use, the TimeMaster adopts a blade brake clutch (BBC), allowing users to stop the cutter blade while the engine is running as they travel over nongrassed areas or are emptying the bag. Users are also able to easily adjust the cutting height using two easy-to-use levers, adjusting the front and rear axles independently.

The new models provide a cleaner cut as they have a re-

“We invested over £400,000 in new cart paths over the past fi ve years and since then we have had a series of storms that have taken down trees, some close by the paths. We can’t send in an excavator to remove the stumps and roots for fear of damaging the paths and that’s where the Stump Grinder has come into its own.”

Leaves and litter are all in the bag

A hefty top-loading 282 litre capacity bag comes with the Little Wonder Pro Vac SP.

A leaf and litter vacuum that is designed to increase productivity, collecting twice the load of the nearest competition so you spend less time emptying it.

Self-propelled, the Pro Vac SP moves faster, manoeuvres

better and gets the job done quicker, and we’re not talking just about leaf collection.

This vacuum will pick up all types of debris, large and small, from bottles and cans to straw and gravel and everything in between that can be sucked up by the powerful Honda driven impeller, with the force of a hurricane wind.

All this is done at industryleading speed, with worry-free Hydro-Gear T2 transmission, at up to 4.2mph forwards and up to 1.8mph in reverse. Moving at speed you can breathe easy with a ‘windshield’ that diverts dust to ground level while you enjoy a clear line of sight, with visibility over the machine and a good view of the front nozzle area. The Little Wonder looks after operator comfort with an arched paddle handle to allow professional users of virtually any size to find a comfortable operating position. Heavy-duty treaded rear drive wheels allow excellent traction on both concrete and grass and there’s a toe tap dump valve for easy engine off manoeuvrability.

New ECHO Lithium Ion Hedge Trimmer

ECHO have introduced a new hedge trimmer, the DHC-200 to their 50V Lithium Ion battery series which also includes trimmers and power blowers.

Like all ECHO products this hedge trimmer has built-in features which take into consideration the environment in which it will be working and operator productivity.

As a Lithium Ion product, the hedge trimmer offers clean battery power whilst providing performance equal to its petrol counterparts. It’s also built to the same professional standard as ECHO’s petrol hedge trimmers with their reputation for being powerful, tough and durable.

“The ecological features of the new DHC-200, as with all the ECHO Lithium Ion series

products,” say ECHO “offer contractors and professional landscapers exceptional benefits. The low noise makes them ideally suited to use in noisesensitive areas such as schools and nursing homes. Low emissions are beneficial in their use in parks, nature reserves and organic gardens.”

There are other considerations such as reduced maintenance costs due to fewer moving parts, easy-to-use controls with no recoil start, no more fuel filling or cold starting.

The DHC-200 just needs charging up and it’s ready to go. It’s lightweight and very comfortable to use, thanks to the ergonomic design of the front handle which helps manoeuvrability, and it can be used for long periods with little fatigue

Gardeners trimming ornamental hedges can count on the variable speed control for precision cutting and optimized runtime. The 62cm double-sided precision cut blades provide a clean cut with a long-lasting sharpness for a beautiful finish.

The DHC-200 uses energy efficient motor controls to manage motor speed, power delivery and battery temperature for improved cutting performance and battery life.

The DHC-200 comes with a 2Ah battery and rapid charger as standard, with an optional 4Ah battery for a longer run time. The rapid battery charger ensures the 2Ah battery is boosted to 80% capacity in 24 minutes and the 4Ah in 48 minutes.

Timberwolf part of the family for SP Landscapes

SP Landscapes has enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship with Timberwolf, and managing director Steve Pammenter knows that he can rely on the company’s range of chippers to match the needs of his business.

Successful contracts for the Forestry Commission led to expansion into highways works, with SP Landscapes taking responsibility for vegetation management on the major trunk roads in East Anglia.

Meanwhile, Timberwolf was making inroads into chipper design, as arborists and landscapers looked for ways to make clearance operations more efficient.

“We had our first machine, then known as an Entec chipper, in 1996,” Steve recalls, “and our businesses have grown together. We’ve always had an excellent relationship with Timberwolf, and the company has been highly receptive to customer feedback to help us get more out of the machines.”

Now, SP Landscapes offers three types of service: tree work, highways vegetation management and grounds maintenance.

“It’s a challenging business environment,” admits Steve. “Local authorities are looking at cutting back and taking work

in-house, despite contractors offering them the best value for money. Highways and tree work are demanding in terms of the training and certification needed, and we aim to work to the highest standards.”

One partner that can always be relied on is the fleet of Timberwolf chippers. “Because our workload is so diverse we need a good mix of machines,” explains Steve. “Currently we have two TW280s on wheeled chassis, two tracked TW280s, a TW190 on tracks and a road tow TW190. We also have a pair of TW230s, which are great if you have younger drivers as they are below 750kg so they don’t need an additional licence. It is a very good machine for domestic jobs.”

For more demanding operations, the TW280s are a good combination of low weight and plenty of capacity.

“The large infeed capacity makes them ideal to take larger pieces of wood, yet they partner well with our VW Crafters with aluminium arb bodies to keep the overall weight down.”

On roadside work, the tracked TW280s offer simple, safe operation coupled with the goanywhere agility offered by the tracks, he adds.

A Major saving for forest rangers

Dating back to the Norman Conquest, Ashdown Forest in the South East of England is one of the UK’s largest free public access space.

Also known as the home of Winnie-the-Pooh, 1,600 hectares of the forest is heathland which represents three per cent of all lowland heathland in the UK.

Our role is to restore and maintain the area as heathland using a variety of methods including bracken cutting, heather mowing and scrub clearance,” explained Mike Payne, a ranger at Ashdown Forest.

To assist the rangers with these conservation activities, a Major 2m MJ2000 Flail Collector was added to the machinery fleet, to cut and collect bracken and grasses in the forest. The rangers at Ashdown Forest mow between 200 – 300 hectares of bracken each year with this machine.

“The Major MJ2000 enables us to effectively manage the heathland by allowing us to cut in difficult terrains and collect the cut material at the same time,” said Mike. “We previously used a 4.5m topper but this left the produce behind which still had to be removed from the site.”

The adjustable cutting height allows the machine to work

a variety of vegetation types. “We’ve been able to take bracken out of heather areas without having to mow too much of the heather,” explained Mike.

When the Ashdown Forest rangers were researching a suitable mowing solution, they were immediately impressed with the overall build of the Major MJ2000. “It is definitely

the strongest of the ‘cut and collects’ that we investigated, within in a really competitive price bracket,” said Mike.

The rangers at Ashdown Forest will resume their heathland management programme in June and are looking forward to working again with their Major MJ2000.

Advances in world of wood

Demand for skilled arborist services has never been greater or standards more demanding, and manufacturers have responded with a wide range of equipment innovations.

Chainsaws Stihl has introduced the MS 261 C-M, designed for felling small to medium sized trees, as well as snedding. Said to be light and well balanced, the MS 262 C-M can also be used with a range of bar lengths depending on the application

The chainsaw features STIHL’s M-Tronic engine management system that offers users fast acceleration, easy starting and optimum power when needed most. Fuel supply is electronically controlled and the machine automatically adapts to operating in ambient conditions for optimal engine performance. All this information is stored in the system and allows operators to restart quickly after extended breaks.

Other features include 2-MIX technology which increases performance whilst significantly reducing fuel consumption, says Stihl. The MS 261 C-M reduces fuel consumption by up to 20% and emissions by up to 50%.

The HD2 filter is made from polyethylene filter material that offers up to 70% finer pores than fleece and polyamide filters, helping to trap very fine dust. Maintenance of the filter is kept simple due to its oil and waterrepellent qualities.

A controlled delivery oil pump allows for precise delivery of chain oil based on the demand of the application. The volume of oil can be easily increased if the MS 261 C-M is being used with longer bar or on very dry wood

The MS 261 C-M is the first STIHL chainsaw to be equipped with captive nuts, ensuring the operator will not risk losing the nuts on the sprocket when changing the cutting attachment.

The latest top handle chainsaw in ECHO’s range is now available in the UK. The CS-2511TES weighs in at just 2.3kg (dry weight w/o bar and chain) and is designed to be highly manoeuvrable and easy to use for long periods, thanks to the compact design.

The engine produces 1.10kW for a high power-to-weight ratio and the saw is designed to

Controls are designed to be easy to use, while a swing-out lanyard ring enhances balance and makes

climbing easier. There are narrow louvres in the body to prevent ingress of pine needles and debris into the engine compartment.

Wider tank openings enable easier oil and fuel filling and the oil adjuster is on top for easy access. The starter grip cord allows the operator to open the oil and fuel caps, even when wearing gloves. A dropout prevention nut is held on with a wire spring so it cannot be lost when the operator needs to maintain the chainsaw, even at height.

Echo offers a two-year professional warranty on its machines.

Makita has introduced the new DUC353Z Twin 18v Brushless motor chainsaw, said to match the logging performance of similar size petrol powered saws.

The Makita 36v direct-drive Brushless motor has a rated ECHO

output of 1,100 watts, similar to a 32cc petrol machine, and comes fitted with a 35cm length bar and a chain speed of 20 metres per second. Trials have shown that two fully charged 5.0Ah batteries will deliver over 60 cuts through 12cm diameter timber, at least seven linear metres of cutting per charge.

This back-handle saw weighs just 5.2kg ready to operate - verses a 32cc petrol model fuelled for work which weighs 5.6kg – with ergonomic softgrip handle; variable speed trigger and constant speed

control; automatic electric chain brake on trigger release, with kickback brake protection and lock-off lever. The 200ml chain oil tank has adjustable flow through the pump with metal gears to the automatic chain lube system and has a capacity display window.

Makita’s tool-less chain tensioning and adjustment system is included, while the strong metal spike bumper allows easier cutting, says the company. The chain catcher can be removed for fast and efficient machine servicing.

In addition to the drive brake safety systems the main power system is automatically turned off if the operator does not grip the lock-off lever 10 seconds after the machine is switched on. The same happens if the operator does not squeeze the trigger switch within one minute after switch-on, even if the lock-off lever is gripped.

Other equipment Echo has introduced the PPT265ES pole pruner, powered by a stage 2 compliant engine delivering 25.4cc, with an Easy Start system for quick starting and safety shut off switch. The 2.72m telescopic shaft can be extended to 3.73m to reach high branches, and is said to be lightweight and rigid for easy manoeuvring.

A centrally placed exhaust allows for right or left hand use and it has an easy grip handle and trigger for operator comfort.

It is supplied with a 30.5cm guide bar with 3/8in saw chain pitch and other attachment s are also available.

ECHO power tools come with a five-year domestic warranty or a two year warranty in professional use. Ryetec is offering two light weight timber shears, with capacities of 14 or 20 cm diameter, as an option on its KTS timber cranes.

Mark Harrison comments: “It is unusual to find tree shears which are light enough to use on timber trailer and crane combinations, and excavators are normally required. However these new units from KTS in Sweden have been designed to operate with the KTS range of timber trailers and cranes for added flexibility.”

The larger of the two units can also be supplied with a fitting kit for excavators, and a larger excavator-only model with a cutting capacity of 300mm is also available as part of the range. Prices start from £4995.

Also new from Ryetec is a 13 tonne high capacity timber trailer, with a telescopic chassis to allow maximum manoeuvrability in combination with its hydraulically steering drawbar, allowing access to the tightest woodland or timber yard. With the chassis fully extended, the trailer has the ability to carry 2 x 3m lengths of timber.

“Available with KTS’s 7.5 metre reach heavy duty crane with a lift of over 2 tonnes at the side of the trailer and options of power driven wheels and Hedremote controls for the crane this trailer can move large volumes of timber with ease,” explains Mark.

mounted hydraulic drive versions, the machines feature patented tooth designs for different applications.

The new mulchers are designed for use by landowners, estates and contractors wanting to reclaim productive land lost to scrub, or rejuvenate woodland. They can also be used to deal with stumps and brash after clear felling in preparation for re-planting.

“Working widths range from 0.60 to 2.50m but we expect 2.25m to be the most popular size,” says Alex Smith, Spaldings product development co-ordinator. “There are five different models available in this size for tractor and specialist power units with 100hp to 500hp at the pto.”

Base models will tackle scrub, saplings and young trees up to 250mm diameter while the range-topping TFR-225 will shred timber up to 700mm

across. A choice of tungsten rotor teeth is available for each machine, including the triplepoint F11 and F12 designs for maximum shredding and the blunter-shaped F05 for stump grinding and incorporation of residues into the soil.

All tooth designs are secured by two bolts set into deep recesses in the carrier well away from the point of contact. They work in conjunction with up to six rows of fixed counter blades to thoroughly shred and mulch vegetation.

Rigid detachable push-bars are available throughout the range,

and heavier-duty versions can be equipped with a hydraulicallyadjustable pushing frame and rake tines to extract and feed-in awkward material.

Top-end TFZ models are built using Swedish Steel’s Strenx high-strength plate, in addition to the hard-wearing Hardox steel used throughout the range for components subject to wear.

Bobcat has extended its new range of forestry cutter attachments with a third model – the new FRC150ST – for use on the smaller Bobcat S630/H and S650/H skid-steer loaders and T590/H and T650/H compact tracked loaders.

The FRC150ST is manufactured almost entirely from Hardox, with a specially designed new fixed motor offering greater output and efficiency. Its enhanced design also offers a new, lighter drum, with

carbide teeth, new hose routing and greater performance and manoeuvrability.

Designed to mulch trees and brush, the cutter leaves a carpet of mulch behind. The variable

front gate can be adjusted to provide the coarseness of mulch.

Providing a cutting width of 1.5m, the FRC150ST forestry cutter is designed for continuous work on bushes and trees 100 to 120 mm in diameter, intermittent use for trees with a diameter from 150 to 200 mm and occasional use on trees 220 to 260 mm in diameter.

Powered by a new high performance motor, the 1.5 m drum is equipped with 30 fi xed long-life carbide teeth. Other new features include three rows of counter cutters, a new adjustable push bar configuration, an ACD Control system and a patented fixed knife rotor with tungsten carbide tips.

Operation is from the cab of the Bobcat loader and the mandatory Forestry Applications Kit protects the loader and operator

from flying objects and debris. It includes an impact resistant front door, which must be installed in order to operate the forestry cutter. A safety feature stops the cutter drum from turning if the loader door is opened.

For work in confined spaces, front and rear light guards are fitted and a guard protects the hydraulic quick couplers, hoses and wire harness from falling trees and branches. A level II FOPS (ISO 3449) protects the operator and the cab, while top and rear polycarbonate windows provide additional protection for the operator.

All functions of the forestry cutter can be fingertip controlled from the operator seat without requiring the operator to remove their hand from the loader steering levers.

Access Platform Sales (APS) has been appointed as the UK

distributor for Socage A314 pick-up mounted platform

Engineered specifically for utilities, utility contractors and tree work, the A314 articulated boom provides a maximum working height of 13.5m. The design features the tracking inside the boom sections, ensuring that operators can work inside the tree canopy without fear of catching it on a branch. The 90˚ basket rotation option optimises the maximum outreach to 7.2m; and with a safe working load of 225kg, it can lift two people with tools.

Steve Couling, Managing Director of IAPS Group, which owns APS and IPS, said: “We are delighted to be representing Socage in the UK.

“The A314 is a hugely popular 13m boom lift, with around 90% market share in the UK. By offering a three-year warranty,

Socage is demonstrating its confidence in both the product and in APS as its new distributor.”

Mounted on an Isuzu D-Max, the vehicle features a powerful 2.5l twin turbo diesel engine which delivers 163hp and 400Nm of torque, with improved fuel economy. Available in either 2WD or 4WD, the Isuzu D-Max features electronic stability control and a traction control system with ABS.

Ground controls with four individual levers enable the operator to deploy the outriggers and stabilise the platform, even on rough terrain.

APS will also offer four truckmounted booms from Socage’s E-Series. These provide up to 28m working height on a 3.5t Nissan Cabstar, meaning the vehicle can be driven by anyone with a standard (class B) UK driving licence.

Team Sprayers in Ely has developed a special single boom, tractor mounted sprayer working with hedging and screening specialists Readyhedge that can effectively spray their hedge stock rows which are configured in 10, 12 and 15 metre runs.

The key to the design is an extendable counter balance weighing 300 Kgs. This enables the sprayer operator to extend the three-section boom to its 12m length with ‘hurling’ jets projecting the spray the final 3m on the 15m rows. The boom is fully height adjustable so all varieties can be sprayed from 30cm high box hedges to 1.80m hawthorn.

The Team ‘Sigma Solo’ sprayer is based upon their Sigma model with a 1000 litre tank so refilling is minimised. A low mounted video camera on the boom assembly warns the

driver when unseen obstacles pose a risk.

“The new Team sprayer has allowed us to establish a much more efficient spraying regime” says Readyhedge’s Gareth Beck. “Variable weather conditions are no longer such a problem as we can respond quicker, the hedges look even healthier than before and application times have been greatly reduced.

“And the new sprayer is much quieter than the knapsack sprayers we previously used so we can operate throughout daylight hours without upsetting the neighbours! We can now complete spray operations in a day which were taking up to a week.”

There is a 25 litre induction hopper for the chemicals which incorporates a canister wash facility, a hand wash for the operator and protective clothes locker.

Case Study: Chipping into the south west

Teign Trees and Landscapes provides tree care, landscaping and emergency call out services in the South West area with the help of its Först wood chippers, with the business recently placing an order for two new Först ST6s, bringing its total number of Först machines to seven.

The work the company carries out includes all aspects of tree surgery, such as tree felling, sectional felling, tree pruning, stump grinding and tree stump removal. More recently, Teign Trees has specialised in highway work, focusing on public safety and utility work, comprising of line and site clearances, including several large contracts with public services covering the area from Bristol to Land’s End.

Managing Director Paul Wright comments: “The two ST8s are great for domestic work, for example private work on hedges, the chipper can just pull it all straight through with ease. The ST6 machines are fantastic for our highway jobs and residential work.

Not only are they easy to transport behind a vehicle on long journeys out, but also they’re also lightweight, which is much better for fuel consumption.

“The ST8 is really beneficial to our site clearances and larger hedge jobs. The large aperture means the chipped wood can feed through the system very quickly and efficiently. For forestry jobs the TR8 is incredibly effective

Fuelling the discussion

Changes to engine legislation due to come into effect on 1st January 2019 will apply to many of the machines regularly used by landscapers and arborists, including diesel powered chippers, explains Timberwolf Sales and Marketing Director Guy Marshlain.

“In common with other chippers on the market, Timberwolf diesel machines are currently powered by engines which will fall outside the requirements of the new regulations.”

“An ongoing programme of legislation to limit emissions from diesel engines requires engine manufacturers to develop new models, and machinery manufacturers such as Timberwolf are obliged to fit the compliant engines to new machines.”

will offer all the qualities that arborists and landscapers have come to expect from Timberwolf – exceptional performance, reliability and ease of use – along with the latest engine technology. We look forward to announcing these new models shortly and to introducing them to existing and new customers.”

In response to the impending changes to emissions legislation, GreenMech has launched the Arborist 150p.

The new Arborist 150p is fitted with a 37hp Briggs & Stratton petrol engine which can offer almost the same performance as the higher horse-powered diesel engine of the existing Arborist 150, but at a much-reduced cost.

machines, and is powered by a 37hp V twin petrol engine.

Warren Access is solving work at height challenges in residential areas, thanks to its latest truckmounted boom lift.

The compact outrigger footprint and working envelope of the Isoli PNT 210JD4 has enabled Warren Access to provide recent solutions for a city council and a housing association.

Based in Newcastle, the company was brought in to

help remove ivy from the gable end of a three-storey council property. The driveway dimensions meant it required a machine with a narrow jacking option – one where the outriggers can be vertically deployed without first being extended outwards. The articulated boom with a jib also helped to provide safe access underneath overhead cables.

Housing association Gentoo also called in Warren Access’ expertise to remove overhanging branches from a roadside tree outside one of its properties in Washington, Tyne and Wear. The narrow jacking option minimised encroachment onto the road, reducing disruption to residents.

Graeme Warren, Managing Director of Warren Access, said: “We invested in this machine after seeing a significant rise in demand for 21m trucks on 3.5t vehicles, which can be driven by anyone with a standard driving licence.

“The excellent working envelope and narrow jacking

feature help our customers to work at height safely and efficiently in residential areas where there are often space restrictions and lots of obstacles to contend with.”

The Isoli PNT 210JD4 is a 21m articulating boom mounted on a 3.5t Nissan Cabstar chassis. Features include a dual pantograph boom which gives zero tail swing and enhanced ‘up and over’ capabilities; and improved jib arc for precise positioning of the platform. A flat-bottomed basket makes it ideal for roofing work.

Improvements on the previous Isoli 210J model include increased safe working load from 200kg to 250kg, providing more payload for tools. The stowed height of the boom is also reduced for travelling.

Warren Access was one of the first companies in the UK to purchase a PNT 210JD4. It is the third Isoli compact truckmounted boom lift in its hire fleet. All three machines were supplied by Access Platform Sales (APS).

Timberwolf is developing chippers with Euro Stage V diesel engines, but also plans to offer its customers the option of petrol engines. This will be a major change for the industry, but brings benefits going forward, says Guy.

“From 2019 diesel engines will increase in price due to the additional technology, and the new diesel engines will not be able to run on rebated fuel (‘red diesel’) due to the emissions legislation and engine configuration.”

Timberwolf plans to supply its range of chippers in petrol-engine format, with the same or improved performance, he points out.

“We are putting the finishing touches to an exciting new range of Timberwolf petrol powered chippers, which

Sales Director, Martin Lucas: “It’s important for us to be continually looking ahead at issues which will affect the industry, and as a consequence our products. The launch of the Arborist 150p has come after many years of research, development and testing. It was vital that we could offer a petrol alternative that did not sacrifice on output or performance. For customers whom diesel remains their preferred choice, we will continue to produce the Arborist 150 fitted with a 26hp diesel engine which, as it stands, meets the new legislation requirements.”

The Arborist 150 has a generous 970 x 790mm in-feed chute to accommodate a 150mm chipping capacity. The 150mm x 230mm letterbox-style infeed throat opening makes light work of heavily forked branches and as standard comes fitted with GreenMech’s patented Disc-Blade system, giving up to 150 hours of chipping before requiring re-sharpening.

Först has also launched a new petrol powered chipper ahead of the new regulations.

The ST6P is an extension of Först’s range of six-inch capacity

Specifically designed for contractors, arborists and landscapers, Först was able to manufacture the sub-750kg ST6P chipper through the use of a lighter engine, GRP panels and a shorter chassis. This allowed Först to utilise the same chipping chamber, flywheel, hopper, and feed roller system used on its popular ST6 machine, building on its reputation of bringing fast, aggressive and robust woodchippers to market.

Doug Ghinn, Director at Först, comments: “The introduction of the ST6P not only delivers exceptional performance and reliability, but also ensures users don’t have to incur costs to obtain the necessary license to tow a machine over 750kg, offering true value to tree surgeons and contractors.”

The ST6P chipper features the FörstGrip feed roller system designed to offer enhanced crushing power. The FörstGrip top feed roller climbs on an arc toward the timber, pulling material down toward the flywheel and naturally climbing butt ends giving the infeed grip to break the toughest of forks and limbs.

This machine also features an open top flywheel system ensuring chip is thrown, not blown, minimising blockages on wet material and helping to maintain increased velocity when chipping.

Lighter and more efficient Redexim Verti-Drain for club

Yelverton Golf Club in Devon has a problem with rain – too much of it! In order to deal with the deluge Course Manager Kristian Summerfield recently took delivery of a Redexim VertiDrain 7316 from Charterhouse.

Kristian says the 18-hole moorlands course, set on the edge of Dartmoor, “is very wet due to thin and rocky topsoil that’s susceptible to compaction” – that and the annual rainfall that tops 2500mm. Having previously used the Verti-Drain 7316 during

his time at the club in Holland, Kristian was confident that it would be the right model for the demands of the Yelverton course.

“We needed a unit light enough for work on the greens but something big enough for viable use on the fairways,” said Kristian. “Steve Dommett from Devon Garden Machinery came to demo the 7316 and it confirmed what we thought.”

With the significant weight reduction compared to their

previous machine, and slower motion of the tines, the VertiDrain 7316 rides over any large rocks instead of forcing through them, avoiding unnecessary extra costs.

“We’re out once a month on the greens, tees, approaches and fairways with 8mm tines in use between April and October,” added Kristian, who is supported by a team of four greenkeepers.

Dennis G34D gives the Red Bulls a boost

Dan Shemesh, Director of Stadium and Training Grounds for the New York Red Bulls has reported excellent results since purchasing a Dennis G34D cylinder mower.

In 2009, after seven years at the Philadelphia Eagles Dan Shemesh landed the role of Director of Grounds at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey home of the New York Red Bulls MLS team.

Now in his eighth season with the New York Red Bulls, the pitch has significantly improved and Dan feels that it has reached

another level since trading his ride-on mower for a Dennis G34D cylinder mower.

The Dennis G34D has been designed and built following the same concept as the popular Dennis G860 machine – which is relied upon in stadium environments all over the globe. Available in three different cutting sizes – 26”, 30” and 34” – the mowers incorporate a large-diameter eight bladed cutting cylinder to cater for a wide range of uses to leave a precision cut. The handlebar design makes maneuvering easy and the wide adjustment makes it comfortable for all cutting heights.

“We like using the machine because of the superior presentation it offers us,” says Dan. “It is simple, easy to adjust,

which makes using the machine easy to control and quick to learn. Dennis is a good reliable company that makes durable machines for high quality pitches around the world.”

Reesink Turfcare launches range of tractor attachments

Reesink Turfcare is bringing to market a range of rear mounted tractor attachments for use with its TYM tractors.

The attachments available are finishing mowers, flail mowers, wide area mowers and rotary tillers to increase the range of products Reesink Turfcare can offer its customers.

TYM sales manager Steven Haynes says the attachments, which are manufactured by Italian-based manufacturer SICMA, were chosen to give customers even more value from their tractor investment.

Available in the range are two types of rotary tillers, the BH to suit a 15-30hp tractor and the RC to suit a 30-55hp tractor. Both are great for typical soil conditions thanks to the six curved

blades per flange which are mounted in a spiral line.

Similarly to the tillers, there are two types of flail mowers available to suit both 15-30hp (TA) and 30-55hp (TE) tractors so whether you’re dealing with estate gardens or highway verges, there is a flail to help you cut through the debris.

When it comes to mowing there are two options depending on the needs of the customer. The FA series finishing mower is available with cutting widths from 1.2m to 1.8m and for those looking for something more productive we have the highly versatile three deck WGM wide area mower which has an overall cutting width of 3.6m.

Reesink Turfcare announces new finance schemes

Reesink Turfcare has announced four new Toro finance schemes offering six ways to pay.

With flexibility at the core of them all, Toro Triple Finance and the Buy Now Pay Later scheme offer customers six ways to finance their Toro machinery.

Toro Triple Finance is a firm favourite for Reesink Turfcare customers, offering three different payment options to suit individual budgets and circumstances. Option one involves an interestfree payment in full within year one. Option two offers customers the chance to spread the cost over five annual payments, concluding with a final payment in month 60 equivalent to 15% of the original cost. Option three is another fiveyear scheme, but with monthly repayments instead of annual, again with a final payment in month 60 equivalent to 15% of the original cost.

Buy Now Pay Later is back, bringing with it three options for

interest free payment. Whether you buy in September, October or November, payment is required in full by 7 May 2018.

Jeff Anguige, national sales manager at Reesink Turfcare, says: “The ever-increasing importance of the role of finance in the acquisition of turf machinery is reflected strongly in these finance schemes offering customers six options on how to fill or top-up their shed with new Toro machinery.”

All deals are available now until 18 November 2017, available to customers in the UK only and subject to acceptance.

New Terralift for Terrain Aeration

Terrain Aeration have added a new Super Scamper Terralift machine to their fleet for deep penetration aeration.

Originally a German invention used to aerate around tree roots with a blast of compressed air, the Terralift concept has been in service with Terrain Aeration for over 25 years.

The new Terralift machine, built by Terrain Aeration, takes the concept to a new level of treatment for waterlogging. The machine hammers a hollow probe one metre into the soil (with the help of a JCB road breaker gun). The result is an improved healthier root system, a healthier sward as well as less disease damage to the turf.

There is no mess, treatment can in fact be carried out mid-season, should a green for example be too waterlogged to play, but otherwise pre or end of season is the best time.

The Super Scamper Terralift is a compact design which enables it to fit through narrow gaps for access to bowling greens and gardens.

Remote control tool carrier launched by Votex

Votex has announce the arrival of the Ferri iCut3 remote control tool carrier, a versatile, tracked machine can operate on banks up to 55 degrees.

Expanding tracks to 1.67m gives it superior stability while working on banks, yet is only 1.32m wide when retracted, making it very manoeuvrable in restricted access areas.

Weighing in at around1200kg (depending on attachment) it can

be transported easily in a 3.5t van or on a standard road trailer.

The 40hp diesel engine drives hydraulic piston pumps to power a variety of interchangeable attachments from flail mowers for grass and general vegetation, forestry flail mower for heavier scrub through to stump grinders, snow blowers and brush sweepers.

Makita’s expanding groundscare range on show

Makita UK will be returning to SALTEX this year which takes places at the NEC in Birmingham 1-2 November 2017.

The Makita UK stand will showcase the ever-growing garden machinery range suitable for professional landscaping contractors, groundsmen and forestry workers.

Mark Earles, Business Development Manager, Makita UK, said: “Our cordless range will be taking centre stage but visitors will be able to learn about the entire range including our petrol and electric models.”

The 18v battery platform makes it economically viable for the tool owner as there is the option to purchase the ‘body only’ version of the tool if you already have the battery. This battery platform has set an industry benchmark but still continues to expand with innovations such as the twin-18v battery 36v application.

Using battery powered grounds care machines means that exhaust emissions are zero – petrol engine exhaust fumes are eliminated and the risk of ground contamination from spilt petrol and oil is removed altogether. Many Makita grounds-care machines offer a considerable reduction in vibration and can be used all day without harm to the operator.

Where traditional machines make an awful noise, the battery powered Makita tools are significantly quieter whilst still delivering a professional performance. This quiet approach means teams can work around parks, schools, hospitals and cemeteries without causing nuisance and annoyance.

Makita will be on stand K190d within the BALI Zone. The BALI Zone features and promotes leading BALI Registered Affiliate and Contractor members. Also confirmed for 2017 are Boningale Nurseries, M&M Timber, Greentech, Ground Control and British Sugar TOPSOIL.

Clarkes of Cavan build business with customer first approach

Clarkes of Cavan, an independent Kubota dealer in Ireland, is a real success story.

The company, part of the Clarke Machinery Group, provide a wide range of products for all types of customers, from lawnmowers and utility vehicles, to tools and all things cycling.

When Philip Treacy joined Clarkes of Cavan in 1997 as a stores person, the business only had three staff. Fast forward 20 years and the business has grown significantly. Philip, who has

been the manager since 2000, now boasts a local workforce that is 25 strong.

Another critical reason for the growth of Clarkes of Cavan is the partnerships it has developed with its supply chain. The business has been working with machinery manufacturer Kubota for example for years, a relationship that has gone from strength to strength based on the quality and reliability of Kubota’s products, backed up with a first class service from Philip and his team.

Clarkes of Cavan stock Kubota’s full range of groundcare solutions, from walk behind mowers, to ride-on mowers, compact tractors and RTV utility vehicles. The business, under its parent company (Clarke Machinery Group), is also a dealer for Kubota’s agricultural tractor range, including its recently launched M5001 Series, MGXIII Series and its flagship M7001 Series.

William’s Den delivers exceptional play whatever the weather

East Yorkshire’s newest family attraction, William’s Den, is enjoying a very busy first season, and it’s not hard to see why with such exceptional play facilities.

Timberplay were delighted to be part of this unique attraction, designing and delivering the outdoor play area.

William’s Den sought to create an attraction that provided the very best naturally inspired play opportunities, from the UK’s largest timber indoor play areas with a difference, to sand and water sites, playful landscaping, challenging outdoor equipment, and den building. It seems the leisure market was waiting for a site such as Williams Den as it has been fully booked for most of the summer holidays.

Timberplay worked with William’s Den to create outdoor play which embraced landscaping to create a space which appeals to children across a wide age range. The inclusion of sand and water pumps and

channels boosts the playvalue within the site significantly.

Older children have the challenge of the Climbing Structure and the thrill of the cableway. Toddlers

the role play within the Platform House or fly as high as they dare in the Cradle Swing.
