CPA forecasts construction output to remain flat - at best - in 2018

The demise of Carillion and falls in public housing repair work, despite urgent work needed post-Grenfell, are expected to hit the industry in 2018.

Growth is expected to remain flat – at best – according to the Construction Products Association’s forecasts.

The sharpest decline for construction in 2018 will be in the commercial sector, and particularly felt in the offices sub-sector as a lack of clarity on the UK’s post-Brexit deal led to a sharp fall in contract awards.

Offices construction is expected to decline 15% in 2018 and 10% in 2019, with further concern this will accelerate if firms choose to move operations out of the UK into other EU member states.

Noble Francis, Economics Director at the Construction Products Association said: “Overall, we are forecasting construction output to remain broadly flat this year but this is before the full impacts of the liquidation of Carillion in January feed through the supply chain and government will need to take a key role in mitigating the effects as it has already done on the services part of Carillion.

“Infrastructure activity is still expected to grow by 6.3% this year if politicians are able to deliver on their many announcements of major projects and spending across roads, rail and energy. Government will also need to help councils with funding to address issues on social housing towers above 18 metres since the Grenfell tragedy. Output in public housing repair, maintenance and improvement has already fallen each month since the tragedy and, without assistance, will fall 2% this year.

“Output in the commercial sector, the second largest construction sector, is expected to fall during 2018, primarily driven by a fall in demand for new office space, particularly within London. We expect offices construction to fall 15% this year as Brexit uncertainty means that international investors hold back on major new investment in high-profile space in the capital.”

Kemper System

Kemper System’s award winning roof refurbishment at Gatwick

Working with contractors, Mitie Tilley Roofing Ltd, Kemper System’s Stratex Warm Roof system, using its solvent-free Kemperol 2K-PUR liquid waterproofing, was specified to refurbish the 2,500 sq. m flat roof above the International Departure Lounge at Gatwick Airport’s North Terminal. Severe water ingress into retail units below meant the project was time critical to avoid potential loss of profit for retailers. The terminal building is at an airside location and increased security measures meant minimal possession times was crucial. Kemper System and contractors won the Liquid Applied Roofing and Waterproofing Award for this project at the annual NFRC (National Federation of Roofing Contractors) UK Roofing Awards (May 2017).

The experts at Quantum Flooring Solutions are constantly looking for ways to improve the functionality of its specialist products and, following an extensive programme of research and development, they’ve now hit upon a unique design which will considerably improve user safety on the nation’s staircases.

Unlike conventional stair nosings which are manufactured with two separate pieces of narrow tread, Quantum’s brand new concept features a single expansive layer of slipresistant PVC across the entire upper surface of the carrier, crucially creating a greater area of grip than any other product available.

This new Wide-Tread addition to the top-selling Aluminium Q-Range is perfect for installation in all types of public and commercial buildings, and is especially suitable for high footfall locations including schools and hospitals. It is also fully Equality Act compliant; its exclusive broader design and choice of distinctive tread colours help to generate a far more obtrusive ladder effect on the staircase, maximising visibility and security.

Increased safety isn’t the only significant product advantage though – Quantum’s new-style nosings eliminate the channel in-between treads where grit and grime collect, facilitating much easier cleaning and maintenance too. A free site survey and measuring service will prove just how cost-effective this industry-first, new product development can be for your projects. If you’d like to know more about the wider benefits of Wide-Tread stair nosings, contact the Quantum specialists today on 0161 627 4222 or email info@quantumflooring.co.uk

A great piece of work in Halifax

The new multi-million-pound Central Library and Archives facility, which is adjacent to the recently transformed Grade I listed Piece Hall in Halifax, benefits from a Levolux solar shading and ventilation solution. A custom external solar shading solution comprises rectangular and trapezoidalshaped aluminium fins, and external tensioned blinds. The rectangularshaped fins, each measuring 400mm wide by 100mm thick, create several frames that project in front of glazed openings on the east-facing elevation. The largest frame, with an opening measuring 7 metres high by 3 metres wide, is set within a larger array of horizontal, trapezoidal-shaped fins. In total, 23 fins are fixed horizontally at a pitch of 450mm, between aluminium carriers.

StoCretec launches a new surface coating

Launched by StoCretec, StoCryl V 700 borrows a technique found in nature to create a highly effective water-repellent effect on the concrete surface that also acts as an effective barrier to carbon dioxide.

Advanced has added an Android app to its Lux Intelligent emergency lighting testing system. This is in addition to the existing iOS and desktop versions. Cloud monitoring via mobile and web apps makes emergency light testing via Lux Intelligent extremely easy and more cost effective, while demonstrating compliance. All test data is stored safely and securely in the Lux Intelligent cloud for as long as it is needed, with all test reports accessible at any time and automatically shared with relevant contractors or maintenance partners. Lux Intelligent is an addressable, automatic test system that shows all emergency lighting is compliant and functioning, with no engineer intervention required.

To delay the onset of algae and fungal growth, StoCryl V 700’s innovative formulation creates a surface coating which is covered by microscopic peaks and bumps. These repel water very efficiently, while the channels between them funnel the water away quickly and easily. By controlling the moisture present on the concrete surface, StoCryl V 700 restricts the establishment of microorganisms, meaning the surface looks better for longer.

Sto helps bring the written word to life

A ventilated rain screen cladding system from Sto has been used to form the crowning section of a major new library and cultural centre in South Shields. The challenging design of The Word highlights the tremendous versatility of the StoVentec R system, as despite the difficulty of the application, a high standard of finish was achieved.

Sto Account Manager, Jim Allan, said: “The lightweight StoVentec boards were fixed to an adjustable stainless steel sub-construction to create a ventilated cavity. This cavity was part-filled with mineral-fibre insulation to provide reliable thermal insulation and create a U-value of 0.26 W/m2k. The cavity also ensures the wall can breathe and remain dry.”

School to benefit from Frametite airtightness system

The impressive construction of a £45 million all-through school on the Greenwich Peninsula in London is set to benefit from first-grade airtightness performance thanks to the installation of the Frametite air barrier system from the A. Proctor Group.

Sub-contractor Bellwood Interiors required a high-quality air tightness membrane and chose the Frametite System as an external air barrier and alternative to a traditional standard breather membrane with EDPM for the steel detailing. The Frametite System comprises Frametite, a low-resistance vapour permeable air barrier for walls plus Wraptite Tape. In addition, Wraptite self-adhesive membrane was applied externally, quickly and easily to the external envelope in continuous pieces.

Wraptite is the only self-adhering vapour permeable air barrier certified by the BBA and combines the important properties of vapour permeability and airtightness in one selfadhering membrane. This approach saves on both the labour and material costs associated with achieving the demands of energy efficiency in buildings.

Unlike internal air barriers, which can be complex and costly to install due to the need to accommodate building services such as electrical, lighting, heating and drainage systems, positioning an air barrier on the outside of the insulation simplifies the process of maintaining the envelope’s integrity, as there are less building services and structural penetrations to be sealed.

Integrated solution wins major project for SGB

The ability to respond efficiently to specific client requirements and supply large quantities of equipment helped SGB to be appointed as the access system provider for a major new development in Manchester. The company has since supplied a large integrated mastclimber access solution for the Middlewood Locks development which has been built in Salford, Manchester.

The £700 million Middlewood Locks development was one of the first major projects undertaken by BCEGI in the north west, and it saw SGB provide 91 single and double mastclimbers. “We needed a large-scale supplier who could design an integrated solution and provide all the necessary equipment,” adds a BCEGI spokesman.

AkzoNobel

Witley Jones put AkzoNobel’s FF top of the class Keeping our children safe in school and providing fit for purpose furniture is a mantra that most good schools now adhere to. Gone are the days when dangerous, chemically-coated furniture and fittings were all-too prevalent in the UK school environment.

Bromsgrove is a co-educational independent public school in Worcestershire which can trace its history back to between 1548-1553 and therefore has a venerable history on which to lean. Today, Bromsgrove with 1600 pupils is one of the country’s bigger independent schools providing a unique micro-environment within the larger school for every pupil. As with most school’s development the actual infrastructure of their buildings is also key to both growth and sustainability. In embracing this expansion Bromsgrove School has a legacy of only using suppliers who can always deliver fit for purpose quality products and meet their exacting standards every time.

From their UK-based premises in Stourport-on-Severn Witley Jones design, manufacture and install bespoke furniture for schools and educational facilities throughout the UK, Europe and across the globe. They manufacture high quality furniture for all educational establishments, producing extensive ranges of classroom, library, common room and accommodation furniture to meet a varied host of individual requirements. Therefore, it’s no surprise that Witley Jones have been working with the Bromsgrove School for several years.

Simon Downes, Managing Director, Witley Jones commented, “we have built up a close operational relationship with Bromsgrove School spanning over nine years, working on a wide variety of projects; from single pieces of furniture through to furnishing whole boarding houses and classrooms”. He added, “we work closely with the Bursar at the school from the initial design ideas, through to installation and accommodating specific design requirements, together with specifications to manufacture bespoke items for them”. Simon Downes further said, “Witley Jones are proud to work closely with the Bromsgrove School across their estate, always ensuring that their requirements are met in delivering the highest quality furniture for their students”.

In producing these high-quality products Witley Jones wanted to ensure that their initial manufacturing methods would be free of formaldehyde in any of the lacquering processes to safeguard both their own workers and the end user.

Remmers Repair Bawdsey Radar Station

Built in 1938 and protected by Concrete Blast Walls, Bawdsey Radar Station was the world’s first operational radar station. The walls had decayed steadily since the building was vacated in 1991, leaving the top layer of reinforcement exposed to the elements. Being a Heritage site, traditional concrete repair techniques were not allowed. Working in partnership, Remmers and Concrete Renovations Ltd devised a way to repair the walls by using Remmers restoration materials. Remmers coloured mortars were used to repair and simulate the colour of the original concrete alongside Remmers migrating corrosion inhibitor and impregnation cream as part of the 25-year maintenance plan. The project has recently received a prestigious Award of Merit, issued by the International Concrete Repair Institute at the convention in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Winning ways with permeable paving External Works & Drainage

An exemplary sustainable drainage (SuDS) scheme featuring innovative applications of concrete block permeable paving has won the top prize at the 2017 Landscape Institute Awards.

Concrete block permeable paving is a key SuDS technique, helping in the fight against flooding and pollution, and meeting current planning policy requirements. It can also supply a controlled flow of clean water to other landscape features for amenity use or recycling. It is one of the most space-efficient SuDS components available and does not require any additional land-take and can handle runoff from roof drainage and adjacent impermeable surfaces as well.

Award Winning SuDS

But this technology continues to develop, as demonstrated by an awardwinning exemplary SuDS scheme featuring innovative applications of concrete block permeable paving – Bridget Joyce Square in Australia Road, White City, London. Designed by SuDS consultants and landscape architects Robert Bray Associates and McCloy Consulting, the scheme is a SuDS park with community at its heart. Its design introduces the innovative concept of concrete block permeable paving as a thin overlay, replacing a lifeless tarmac road surface, on the original road base.

In this SuDS landscape, rainwater is removed straight from the surface without gulleys, then attenuated and treated within the paving before being released horizontally via stainless steel slots into adjacent, well-planted basins. Finally, flow control chambers on outlets from the basins protect the combined sewer. Thus, rainfall remains within the landscape until storms have passed and the sewer can deal with water again.

Local Consultation

Consultation with local people and a realization of the potential for the site led to an integrated design that linked two disconnected spaces and created a social arena celebrating rainfall. Concrete block permeable paving was used to break the existing formal road alignment and introduce a ‘piazza’. Local residents were keen to retain memories of a low wall in front of the school, used as a balance beam in their youth. From this a thematic ‘Wiggly Wall’ was born and became part of a ‘ribbon’ motif that united the linear spaces and symbolised the bringing together of the community.

The scheme won ‘Winner of Winners’ (the President’s Award) as well as Winner of the ‘Adding Value through Landscape’ category at the 2017 Landscape Institute Awards, and also an ICE London Civil Engineering Award in 2016. The Landscape Institute judges recognised the design as: “An exemplary approach to partnership working in delivering solutions to so many problems in a way that can, and should be, replicated nationally”. Most importantly, it has been enthusiastically welcomed by local residents.

Interpave has just published a new case study on this inspirational project, freely available to download from www.paving.org.uk . Here, you can also find a wealth of technical guidance and background information on concrete block paving, flags, kerbs and related products – ranging from domestic uses to the most taxing heavy industrial applications – as well as SuDS.

EE Ingleton Perforated Image Panels

E E Ingleton have completed further projects using their new PicPerf© image perforation system. Anodised aluminium panels were manufactured for Thames Archtectural, & installed in Berkeley Homes Victory Pier development in Gillingham, as well as for ambulance bay screen panels at London’s University College Hospital. Both projects called for very high open area panels to meet ventilation requirements, whilst retaining striking images and patterns. The Victory Pier panels feature seven waterbirds, whilst the UCH installation was based on the architect’s ‘funky trees’ concept. The PicPerf© system has been used for various prestigious projects including Debenham’s flagship Oxford Street store for Dane Architectural and Kingston upon Thames Riverside development for Cadisch MDA. Long Rake Spar

Long Rake Spar assists development of cycle superhighway

Long Rake Spar has been involved in the development of a new East-West Cycle Superhighway through central London. Addagrip were contacted by Transport for London approved contractor F M Conway Ltd to lay 2,200m2 of their BBA approved Terrabound Resin Bound porous surfacing on a new stretch of cycle path that runs alongside Green Park. To complement the location, an attractive natural aggregate was required for the surfacing and Long Rake Spar’s Rhine Gold 6mm was chosen. The hardwearing qualities of the Rhine Gold ensure the smooth, porous paving will provide good slip resistance for the cyclists and deliver a low maintenance surface in this busy area of Central London.

A Bronze Garden Roofing, External Wall Finishes & Insulation

Dow Jones Architects’ recently completed Garden Museum Phase 2 uses Nordic Bronze clad interventions to create a fresh yet gentle identity for a historic church and graveyard, differentiated from the neighbouring Lambeth Palace.

London’s Garden Museum is housed in the deconsecrated grade II* listed church of St Mary at Lambeth. Dow Jones Architects’ first phase in 2008 involved a two-storey gallery inside the church, creating new galleries, an education room and storage, and consolidated the nave as an events space. The competition-winning second phase extends the museum both within the existing building and out into the churchyard, creating a new public face. New garden pavilions provide education rooms for a range of learning and community activities, and a café. They are connected by a glazed cloister that frames a new Dan Pearson designed garden and are clad in Nordic Bronze copper alloy from Aurubis.

Interlocking Nordic Bronze shingles with concealed fixings are set out in a distinctive, plate-like pattern conceived as being reminiscent of the flaking bark of the surrounding plane trees. The shingles wrap tightly around the façade, meeting the windows and slim warm roof construction to form a crisp outline. Mechanical extract vents are integrated into the cladding with custom bronze cowls that protrude outwards.

Lightweight Material

The architects chose Nordic Bronze as “a lightweight material that weathers from a bright copper colour to an even earthy chocolate brown. This colour will allow the building to sit quietly within the graveyard, allowing the garden and church the strongest presence”. Nordic Bronze is produced by Aurubis, part of the world’s leading integrated copper group and largest copper recycler. Other copper alloys include Nordic Brass – now also available

pre-weathered – and the innovative Nordic Royal, an alloy of copper with aluminium and zinc, giving it a rich golden through-colour and making it very stable.

The Nordic Copper range also provides straightaway surfaces that otherwise take years to develop in the atmosphere – particularly on vertical facades. The processes involved are generally similar to those taking place over time in the environment, utilising copper mineral compounds, not alien chemical processes. All these surfaces form an integral part of the copper, generally continuing to change over time, and are not lifeless coatings or paint. The material is easily bent and formed, and there are no limitations on the length of copper sheet or strip because whole coils are treated on the production line, not just limited size sheets.

In addition to Nordic Standard ‘mill finish’, Nordic Brown pre-oxidised copper, offers lighter or darker shades of brown determined by the thickness of the oxide layer. The extensive Nordic Blue, Nordic Green and new Nordic Turquoise ranges have been developed with properties and colours based on the same brochantite mineralogy found in natural patinas all over the world. As well as the solid patina colours, ‘Living’ surfaces are available for each with other intensities of patina flecks revealing some of the dark oxidised background material..

solution waves goodbye to ugly rooftops

Italian architects, in conjunction with the multi-discipline company STEAM, designed the €130m Monselice Hospital in Northern East Italy. “Our solution was to cap as many stacks as possible with the Studor Maxi-Vent Air Admittance Valve (AAV) which fits discretely within the roof space”, commented Studor’s UK Technical Sales Director Daniel Rath. “The Maxi-Vent protects the trap seals within the drainage system by allowing the intake of air so that each soil pipe can maintain the right level of pressure within the system. This is critical, especially in a hospital environment, ensuring there is no cross-contamination from the drainage system into the habitable space. Furthermore, the Maxi-Vents eliminate the need for any roof penetrations, thus reducing the amount of pipework required saving both time and money.”

What should you consider when designing roof terraces?

Space is often at a premium in the UK. In most of the country, around 20 per cent of households live in flats, many of which have no garden or balcony space.

Allgood extends its ANSI product offering

Allgood has extended its ANSI product offering, ensuring its high quality door hardware products are manufactured in accordance with the stringent American national standards. The Allgood ANSI range incorporates the necessary UL Listed products for fire rated assemblies, ensuring that the products are resistant to the spread of fire and smoke within a building, and the spread of fire to or from the building.

One way to effectively increase the amount of outdoor living space on a property is to build a roof terrace, but where should you begin?

During the early stages of the planning process, it is important for the design team to work closely with the homeowner or developer to determine exactly what is expected of the finished roof terrace and how it will be used.

Questions to ask when planning a roof garden include: will the space be used by children?; will pets use the space? how much time will be spent on the roof terrace; how can you maximise the best views?; how will the outdoor terrace be made accessible?; will you need walk-on roof lights for lighting up the space below?; what kind of lighting will be required?; and what’s the microclimate like?

While creating stunning visual elements and unique features within the design is key to unlocking a space that meets and exceeds expectations, safety and functionality must come first; this article outlines some important factors to consider.

Safety, Security & Fire Protection

Essential Protection

In an uncertain world, smoke, heat and CO alarms are the first line of defence against fire and carbon monoxide poisoning, providing critical early warning for occupants. Thakeham, one of the leading residential developers in the South East, ensures peace of mind for its customers with Kidde’s Firex mains smoke and heat alarms, and Kidde carbon monoxide alarms, all interlinked for whole-home safety.

Thakeham Homes, part of the Thakeham Group, delivers a range of new homes including bungalows, apartments and houses in sought after locations throughout Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire. Thakeham is proud of its exceptional attention to detail, particularly when it comes to safety. A Thakeham spokesperson commented: “We specify Kidde Firex smoke and heat alarms, alongside Kidde’s 4MCO carbon monoxide alarms, for all new homes. These interlinked products provide an integrated alarm system, meeting all our technical requirements from a single manufacturer.

Exceeding Minimum Standards

“At Thakeham, we aim to exceed minimum standards and regulations. A working chimney will be installed with a solid fuel appliance – along with

a CO alarm to meet current Building Regulations. We also ensure a CO alarm is positioned in the proximity of any gas boiler, as an extra precaution. We insist that all the alarms – including CO – are mains powered, interlinked and have battery back-up to give our home owners real peace of mind should the unthinkable happen”.

The Firex range can be interconnected with the company’s hard-wired carbon monoxide alarms using the unique ‘Smart Interconnect’ feature to create a comprehensive system for whole-home protection. Crucially, all the interconnected alarms have different, distinct alarm sounder patterns for carbon monoxide and fire, supported by different display messages on the digital 4MDCO model. So, without the need for any further operation of the system – such as remote switches – Smart Interconnect automatically alerts occupants of the specific hazard that confronts them.

Kidde’s latest generation of Firex smoke alarms offers Standard, Long Life and Rechargeable battery back-up versions of each sensing technology, giving nine options in all. And it costs less than £1 per year to operate a Firex alarm – a major benefit for householders.

Kidde Safety Europe is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of smoke, heat and carbon monoxide alarms. As a member of the United Technologies Corporation (UTC), Kidde sits alongside iconic brands such as Chubb fire and security systems, Carrier heating and air conditioning, Hamilton Sundstrand aerospace systems and industrial products, Otis elevators and escalators, Pratt & Whitney aircraft engines and UTC Power fuel cells.

Whatever else you do to make housing safer, consider wider installation of smoke, heat and CO alarms as a straightforward, low cost early warning – the essential first step for fire safety. For more information, email: sales@ kiddesafety.co.uk or call: 03337 722 227

treated cedar cladding in the Lake District

Timber cladding is being used increasingly as a priority choice amongst architects and designers for use as a protective skin for buildings. This is a reflection of the natural and unique quality that wood provides. Whether the project is a large scale development or a small private dwelling, timber cladding gives greater flexibility in design, is versatile, attractive and environmentally friendly. Having made an often significant investment in timber cladding the question of how it is best protected arises. This natural look is increasingly sought after but the challenge is, how to achieve it without taking the risk of uneven weathering on different aspects of the building, or in protected areas, such as overhanging eaves. Another issue can be the unsightly tide marks caused by extractive wash out, a particular problem with western red cedar.

Underfloor air conditioning upgrade for Avaya Fit-out

AET Flexible Space has recently completed commissioning new equipment installed in the refurbished office buildings at the Cathedral Hill Campus, Guildford. With underfloor systems, the whole plenum under the building’s raised access floor becomes the duct, or ventilation zone and each floor is divided into separate zones; ideal for multitenancy occupation or corporate division. Each of these zones is supplied with fully conditioned (chilled or warmed) air, which is fed into the plenum by the zonal downflow units (CAM), and then supplied into the workspace via Fan Terminal Units (Fantile). The Fantile units feature integrated controllers where users can personally adjust fan speed and temperature to suit their own comfort; which can have a positive impact on user wellbeing.

Electrorad takes electric radiators to new heights

In addition to updating and expanding its Vanguard range of aluminium electric radiators, Electrorad has launched a new state-of-the-art Vanguard Eco-smart range that is one of the first to have voice control compatibility with the market-leading Amazon Alexa.

Both ranges are fully compliant with Lot 20 legislation that took effect on January 1 2018.

Vanguard and Vanguard Eco-smart offer a wide choice of outputs in 750w, 1200w, 1500w and 2000, and being fully Lot 20 compliant, they feature a number of energy saving controls. These include Virtual Open Window Sensors - to ensure that radiators stop heating when they sense a draft and restart when the window has been closed - and Adaptive Start Control that helps radiators learn when to switch on in order to achieve optimum household comfort. Going beyond Lot 20 compliance, all models also boast an in-built energy monitor.

The new Vanguard Eco-smart range goes one step further; enabling homeowners to ‘voice control’ their heating.

All Vanguard Eco-smart models can be controlled from anywhere in the world, and unlike other equivalents, they feature an inbuilt RF chip with a signal that can ‘hop’ up to five times to increase the range and help reach remotely-sited radiators.

Gilberts

Fusing the options

Ventilation design and specification for multi-occupancy buildings is now as simple as A,B,C through an innovative approach pioneered by Gilberts. It has developed a stock, single-unit hybrid solution focussed on natural ventilation with heat recovery - its Mistrale Fusion System (MFS). The company’s pioneering approach has continued, with the evolution of the system that now enables simple addition of extra elements. Thus, the core MFS is manufactured as a standard product, with ‘add-on’ items to meet the varying specifications of each project. Elements such as heating coils, filters, silencers, duct connection outlets and louvre transformation, plus a range of air volumes for warm up or purge ventilation, to supplement the standard airflow rates, ensure the MFS brings a comprehensive hybrid solution to the extensive, variable building demands for ventilation.

Wilo

Wilo-Plavis

The Wilo-Plavis is a high-efficiency, low noise and compact solution for condensate lifting. The product’s introduction in early 2017 broadened Wilo’s product portfolio and the offering to building owners and installers alike. Condensate created by a condensing boiler creates additional considerations for the install, not only how to remove it from the property, but also how to handle the acidic nature of the water. The latest revision of the product hopes to address this by making neutralisation crystals as an option available with the product. The product itself has been designed to house a 700g sachet of neutralisation granules in order to combat this issue. Other updates also include updates to the product’s alarm contact feature, making for a better integrated solution all round, with improved connectivity to the rest of the installation.

The sounds of science

Experimentarium in Tuborg near Copenhagen is one of the most exciting buildings to open in recent months. Designed by CEBRA architects, this world class science centre provides families, school children and science lovers high-quality science exhibitions where they can touch and play and experience science in an innovative new way.

This fascinating project is full of contrasts meaning that the structure itself is as much an exhibition as the attractions and sights within. Inevitably the use of hard surfaces throughout, coupled with the noise and chatter from thousands of daily visitors, meant the architects had to pay special attention to the acoustics. Their solution was to install Troldtekt ceiling panels which provide a very high-performance sound absorbing surface which contrasts dramatically with the copper, aluminium and glass elements and complements the interior atmosphere. In addition, because the ceiling is suspended it can be removed or adapted to accommodate exhibition changes within the 11,500sqm of public spaces.

Extended above the original red brick walls of the old brewery, the Experimentarium comprises several new floors clad in perforated aluminium enclosing inspirational

spaces and atriums accessed by curved Helix shaped stairways. It is designed like a theatre with large areas backstage housing staff facilities, workshops, creative rooms and offices.

Specified throughout the UK and Europe, the benefits of 100% Troldtekt natural wood wool panels include high sound absorption, high durability, natural breathability, low cost life cycle performance and sustainability as documented by Cradle to Cradle certification at silver level.

New partitioning system offers clear advantages

If you’re looking for a partitioning system that gives your clients light, bright, open spaces and gives you endless design versatility combined with easy, rapid installation, Nevill Long now have just what you need – Longline Vision.

This recently-launched system offers designers, installers and office workers a number of advantages – but one stands clearly above the rest.

With no vertical mullions between the system’s panes, Longline Vision makes it easy to create a beautiful aesthetic…and for a totally seamless, streamlined effect, it can also be integrated directly into drywall partitioning.

Its versatility is also a big advantage, offering design options to create everything from quiet corners to communal areas. And with a variety of glazing options together with manifestations from electric privacy glass to patterns and designs applied through etching or adhesive film, it offers occupants privacy when they need it and clarity when they don’t.

“Designers love Vision’s seamless look and slim aluminium profiles, especially as they’re available in a range of colours” explained Dave Bonner, Managing Director at Nevill Long. “While contractors are impressed by how easy it is to install – not to mention the expert support they get from Nevill Long, the UK’s leading name in partitioning and interior fit-out products.”

They are specified to improve acoustics in many different projects such as schools, leisure centres, pools, commercial, private and public buildings. Available in various sizes and in four grades from extreme fine to coarse, they can be left untreated or painted in virtually any RAL colour.

LG Hausys has launched HI-MACS® Ultra-Thermoforming, an innovative formula that pushes boundaries of solid surface shaping to a whole new level with 30% more thermoplastic capabilities, the biggest innovation for the Solid Surface history since it’s inception in 1967. The innovative formula allows for more dramatic shaping: the minimum radius of 18mm (previously 50mm) opens a whole new design dimension. The new product is more flexible thanks to the thermoforming process, which allows designers to create much sharper curves and organic designs.

More accentuated curves can be achieved now without compromising the properties of the material. HI-MACS® remains resistant, easy to work with and to look after.

Bespoke Impey wetroom solution for Nine Elms Point

Residents of Barratt London’s Nine Elms Point will be able to take advantage of the extensive range high-specification options within their home, including spectacular modern wetrooms. The elongated width of the linear wetroom channel, meant that a standard ‘off the shelf’ product would be far too short, so Barratt London commissioned Impey’s experienced R&D team to create a bespoke product, which would enhance the look of the wetrooms, as well as effectively drain away excess water from the powerful rainforest showerheads. The team came up with an attractive design, incorporating a functional and robust floor channel drainage moulding which could be installed first and screeded in place.
