Manufacturing output growth wanes but stays above average

Manufacturers’ output volumes growth slowed following a robust showing in the previous month, according to the latest CBI Industrial Trends Survey.

The survey, of 409 firms, revealed that output growth slowed in the three months to September, but remained above the longterm average. Meanwhile, total order books weakened slightly again but remained well above the long-run average. Export order books also faded a little to their weakest in almost a year, but likewise remained well above the long run average.

Expectations for output price inflation remained firmly above the long-run average, while stocks of finished goods remained adequate but below the long-run average.

Anna Leach, CBI Head of Economic Intelligence, said: “While manufacturing order books remain strong and output is still growing, Brexit uncertainty continues to cloud the outlook. Heightened fears of a ‘no deal’ Brexit scenario have prompted some firms to move publicly from contingency planning to action.

“E orts on all sides must be geared towards securing the Withdrawal Agreement and - crucially - the transition period. This will provide temporary but essential relief for businesses of all sizes and sectors.

“Looking ahead to the Autumn Budget, business rate reform, coupled with movement on capital allowances, could help encourage productive investment against this uncertain backdrop.”

The research was released shortly before it was revealed that UK construction companies indicated a sustained increase in business activity during September, but the rate of expansion slowed for the second month running. At 52.1 in September, down from 52.9 in August, the seasonally adjusted IHS Markit/CIPS UK Construction Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) signalled the weakest upturn in output for six months.

Civil engineering was the worst performing sub-category of construction work, with activity declining at a slightly quicker rate in September. House building and commercial construction continued to increase at a solid pace, although the latest survey indicated weaker growth than in August. A number of firms suggested that subdued economic conditions so far in 2018 remained a factor holding back business activity growth.

Aurubis

Nordic Blue Roofline

Ian Ritchie Architects’ ingenious project for the Royal Academy of Music in London is defined by its roofline of Nordic Blue copper. Seamlessly integrated within the historic site, the project is expressed by facades and roofs clad in Nordic Blue prepatinated copper from Aurubis. Nordic Blue is a factory-applied patina developed with properties and colours based on the same brochantite mineralogy found in natural patinas all over the world. In marine climates, the natural copper patina contains some copper chloride giving it a blue-green colour, emulated with Nordic Blue. As well as the solid patina colours, other intensities of patina flecks revealing some of the dark oxidised background material create ‘Living’ surfaces.

Restore and renew with Eurobrick

There are many dilapidated buildings around the UK that just need a little care and attention to either restore them to their former glory or to give them a whole new lease of life. Eurobrick has been leading the brick slip cladding sector for nearly 30 years and has extensive experience of supplying redevelopment projects that aim to rejuvenate these older properties.

X-Clad is an external wall insulation (EWI) brick slip cladding system that is suitable for both new build and retrofit projects and includes the option to add different thicknesses of insulation to help meet the U-Value targets of a project while maintaining a lightweight, slim profile. With a huge variety of brick slips available, and the flexibility to use alongside other finishes such as timber or render, any number of traditional or contemporary finishes can be achieved.

The Cotton Exchange is a recent project that involved the sympathetic conversion of a redundant warehouse building into residential apartments. Situated in London, the old warehouse building was unattractive and falling into disrepair, as the ‘before’ photo from the architects, Hale Brown, shows. The redevelopment of the site transformed the existing building into thirty four 1 & 2 bed loft-style contemporary apartments.

Eurobrick supplied a total 2400m² of X-Clad system for this project, which was installed by RDK Dry Lining Ltd to both the side and front elevations. This included around 1970m² of the 17mm insulated backer panels and 430m² of the 50mm insulated backer panels. The panels are lightweight, easy to handle and cut to size and were mechanically fixed directly to the existing walls.

Three different colours of specially cut brick slips were used, including Ibstock Chelsea Old Funton, Ibstock Leicester weathered and Ibstock Bevern Dark Multi slips along with Eurobrick’s Standard grey and Light Sandstone Europoint mortars, which helped to create the overall distinctive multi-coloured finish.

Brick slip cladding is durable and will weather and age in the same way as conventional brickwork, requiring little to no maintenance. Eurobrick’s systems are BBA certified and they also offer a 25 year product guarantee. For more information please visit www.eurobrick.co.uk.

Howe Green creates “specials” for centre of collaboration and creativity

Howe Green, one of the leading brands in the specialist horizontal access market, has supplied products to the £150 million National Automotive Innovation Centre (NAIC) being built on the University of Warwick campus.

The distinctive 33,000m2 building, with state of the art equipment and world class facilities, will provide a centre for research, innovation and technology development in the UK automotive sector.

Howe Green supplied around 400 floor access covers for use throughout the centre to provide safe and easy access to building services concealed under the raised flooring. The Howe Green bespoke 7500 Series Medium Duty Stainless Steel covers were specified by award-winning architects Cullinan Studio. The specification required that the covers were manufactured with a reduced depth, instead of the standard overall frame depth of 75mm. The reduction in depth enabled the access covers to be infilled with the same flooring used elsewhere in the raised floor system - calcium sulphate floor panels, with the stone prebonded.

The floor access covers were installed by Lindner, the market leader in raised flooring systems. Calcium sulphate floor panels are ideal for sustainability as they are manufactured almost exclusively from recycled materials – an important consideration for the NAIC which is aspiring to a BREEM excellent rating.

Resiblock At The Races

It was Happy 25th Birthday to Resiblock, and how they celebrated at Ascot Races. The day’s events included a 7-race card and four course menu in the On5 Restaurant, hosted by Jockey David Crosse. Staff were dressed in their finest, with Warehouse Lad Ben amazing everyone with a grey/blue herringbone suit. Meanwhile the ladies of the office looked suitably stunning in an array of beautiful outfits. Managing Director Paul Lamparter said of the day: “It has been a fantastic 25 years for us, and the staff deserved to be treated for their efforts. But our biggest thanks go to the loyal customers of Resiblock, without whom we would not be where we are today.”

Catnic delivers unique thermal efficiency for new development

When specifying lintels for its new, largescale housing development, Property Management Company AKI Ltd looked to Catnic’s Thermally Broken Lintel (TBL), as its design achieves superior thermal performance, whilst offering the same stable installation benefits of a traditional cavity wall lintel. BRE certified, the Catnic TBL range delivers industry leading linear thermal transmittance

Psi values of 0.02 to 0.05 W/mK and safe working loads in line with Catnic’s existing Cavity wall lintels.

As the development is marketed on its energy efficient credentials, it was vital that the building materials specified lived up to their claims. The specifically designed flat top of Catnic’s Thermally Broken Lintel provides a simple, consistent junction with the cavity wall insulation.

Levolux balconies impress at Westmount

A new development in St Helier, Jersey for Dandara showcases a revolutionary new ‘bolt-on’ balcony system, which was designed, manufactured and installed by Levolux

The shape and size of balconies supplied by Levolux vary considerably, from rectangular, to more irregular trapezoidal shapes and larger ‘L-shaped’ balconies that extend along two elevations. Levolux’s ‘bolt-on’ balconies are formed from custom components and are fully assembled at their premises prior to installation.

Levolux attended site at an early stage to fit the first-fix ‘stub’ brackets on to ‘cast-in’ fixings that had been incorporated into the building’s core concrete structure. The brackets were aligned in readiness for the balconies to be fitted after the cladding was in place.

tiles, as well as the revolutionary Porotherm clay block wall system. Compatible with iPhone, iPad and Android mobile devices, the app’s search function is an incredibly useful tool that can filter through Wienerberger’s paving products. A unique feature of this app is that it allows users to find an equivalent Wienerberger product match when they enter the name of a paver, roof tile or brick from another manufacturer in the search field. Users are now able share products via email and social media, as well as request samples directly from the app.

The Saniflo Sanifloor shower pump range is now available as a wireless product and is renamed Sanifloor+. Designed specifically for areas where floor drainage is an issue and space underneath is very limited, this unique pump both sucks the waste water from the gully and pumps it away. The wireless models allow for easier installation and facilitates wireless communication between the pump and the shower waste. The gully and drain include a detection system that controls the pump. Water entering the gully or drain automatically activates the pump through the integrated detection system. The water is then sucked and discharged to the main line.

More typically used to support and stabilise buildings, the versatile Helifix Dixie piled foundation system has recently been installed at The Battle of Britain Bunker Museum, RAF Uxbridge, to support a statue of World War II hero, Air Chief Marshal, Sir Keith Park. Due to the proximity of this new statue to both electrical and drainage services, Dixie micro-piles were selected as a reliable and cost-effective alternative to traditional concrete foundations. These Helifix pipe piles screw into virtually any type of soil, quickly and easily, with minimal disruption, noise or spoil removal and would be easier to extract from the ground in the future, by simply being ‘unscrewed’.

New-build alone is not enough

When you consider that we are building less than 1% of our housing stock each year – as TV presenter George Clarke reports in his latest piece on The Hub, it is clear that we cannot simply ‘build’ our way to a sustainable future.

The nation needs to be 80% cleaner by 2050 in terms of carbon reduction but about 80% of our current buildings will still be in use by 2050, so this is a massive issue that we all need to tackle.

We therefore have to find a way of making existing buildings carbon-free and renewable heating is a major part of achieving that. Which brings me back to the new Manchester development that I started with.

The development uses 8 commercial Ecodan air source heat pumps as a community heating system to provide heating and hot water to 105 apartments.

This has helped the developers meet environmental planning requirements by achieving strict carbon reduction targets (more than 35% above Standard Assessment Procedure) to gain planning permission.

Take a leaf out of this story

The Aaben is a modern development of 105 homes, all available for market rent, on Leaf Street in Hulme. Located just south of Manchester’s city centre, Hulme boasts a creative art scene, independent restaurants and cafes and a thriving local community.

The development itself is named after an old building dating back to the 1920s which was situated close by until it was knocked down in 1993. For decades before it had served as a community cinema and, for a short time, a bingo hall. The new Aaben is a mixture of 1, 2 and 3-bedroom apartments set around communal, external space, and 3-bedroom town houses with private gardens. Many of the living rooms benefit from direct sunlight and a shared public garden sits at the centre of the development for the wider community to enjoy.Designed with quality, comfort and energy efficiency in mind, the homes include a range of features that will benefit the environment and reduce residents’ energy bills.

Cost savings

The original design was based on a ground source heat pump (GSHP) but the cost proved beyond the required budget, so design consultant Engineering

Design Partnership (EDP) was tasked with value engineering the scheme.

This led to Mitsubishi Electric’s involvement, as Dan Martell, Design Engineer at EDP, explained: “Following the successful installation of a Mitsubishi Electric air source heat pump (ASHP) system on a previous residential scheme we recommended the Ecodan ASHP system as we felt it would be a well performing, cost-efficient solution ideal for The Aaben.”

The Aaben was completed in the autumn of 2017 and thanks to the Ecodan system is eligible to benefit from the non-domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI).

Building work began in November 2016 and Proline Mechanical was the installation company assigned to the project. Proline is one of the UK’s leading building services engineering and maintenance contractors specialising in detailed revit design, thermal dynamic modelling, BIM, engineering installation and commissioning of mechanical and electrical services.

Proline installed a multiple unit Ecodan system on the main roof of the development. Consisting of 8 x CAHV-P500YA units, the community heating system provides hot water to a heat interface unit located within each dwelling for hot water and heating within that dwelling. Each tenant is charged accordingly via a heat meter measuring how much heat energy is taken from the network.

Proline’s Project Manager, Paul Gledhill, said: “The Ecodan system was perfect for this project as the ASHP units are designed to meet the heating and domestic hot water (DHW) requirements for all dwellings via a district heating system. As

the system is located on the main roof very near to dwellings there were some sound issues to overcome but these were easily resolved with the erection of an acoustic wall to prevent sound breaching the plant area.”

The ASHP system boasts a capacity of 344KW and can operate at sufficiently high temperature to provide heating and DHW. These systems can also guarantee performance down to -10°C and will happily continue working down to -20°C.

A modular approach to the community

The industry has already looked at community heating in a variety of forms and one of the occasional issues that arise relate to individual control and bills, and what happens if the entire system fails – does everyone lose their heating?

Well that is where a community heating scheme based on modular heat pumps working together can have further benefits.

Not only does the system allow each apartment to control their own heating and hot water requirements, working out exactly how much energy each property is consuming, because the community heating uses a number of heat pumps – in this case 8, if there is an issue with one, or when it needs to go offline for annual maintenance, then the other units on the system pick up the slack and ensure that everyone still keeps receiving heating.

The system also utilises a 6,000 litre buffer tank to store thermal energy for short peak demands and although this particular project is a new-build, there is no reason why the technology cannot be applied on a wider scale, to a huge variety of different projects.

Now you can see why this excites me as editor of Refurb Projects.

Wilo Wilo-Plavis

The Wilo-Plavis is a high-efficiency, low noise and compact solution for condensate lifting. The product’s introduction in early 2017 broadened Wilo’s product portfolio and the offering to building owners and installers alike. Condensate created by a condensing boiler creates additional considerations for the install, not only how to remove it from the property, but also how to handle the acidic nature of the water. The latest revision of the product hopes to address this by making neutralisation crystals as an option available with the product. The product itself has been designed to house a 700g sachet of neutralisation granules in order to combat this issue. Other updates also include updates to the product’s alarm contact feature, making for a better integrated solution all round, with improved connectivity to the rest of the installation.

Myson

Taking heating to new heights

Myson has introduced three new vertical heating solutions to offer more choice when it comes to specifying heat emitters.

The first is the LST Vertical, designed with safety in mind, it comes equipped with a round steel casing which ensures pipework is concealed.

It comes with a 10 year warranty for both the emitter and casing, fully complies with NHS Guidance notes 1998 and is protected with anti-bacterial paint.

LST Vertical is the slimmest and widest panel LST on the UK market with widths ranging between 420mm & 870mm. Joining the rest of the LST family, it creates a total range of 94 stocked sizes, all in all making it the perfect heating solution for hospitals, care homes, schools and other public facing facilities.

In addition, Myson came to the conclusion that they needed a range of vertical premium panel radiators to complement their existing Plan & Plan Plus range. So, have welcomed the Plan Vertical and Plan Plus Vertical, creating a combined Plan & Plan Plus family range consisting of 230 stocked sizes.

The ideal solution for offices, hotels and contemporary buildings, the sleek flat front panel design of the Plan Vertical offers a modern alternative to the traditional panel radiator, while the Plan Plus Vertical takes modern styling one step further with a decorative front panel.

Both models come equipped with stylish curved side panels, offer a 10 year guarantee and come in heights of 1800mm and 1950mm.
