Cities should feature compact development alongside large, contiguous green spaces to maximise benefits of urban ecosystems to humans, research led by the University of Exeter has concluded. More than half the world’s population now lives in cities. As numbers continue to swell, decision-makers across the globe grapple with how best to accommodate growing resident numbers while maintaining healthy urban ecosystems.
Previous research has demonstrated that urban green spaces and trees yield farreaching benefits to humans, from increased happiness and health to absorbing surface water run-off and storing carbon.
Researchers have long debated whether it is better to build
compact developments with large parks or nature reserves, as often found in Europe and Japan, or whether it is preferable to build sprawling suburbs with many small parks and gardens, as found in many North American and Australian cities. Now, the team at the University of Exeter, working with Hokkaido University in Japan, has analysed nine case studies of cities worldwide which considered how urbanisation patterns affect the functioning of urban ecosystems. The research, published in Frontiers in Ecology and Environment and supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), has concluded that high-density cities featuring large parks or nature reserves yield the most benefits – although they stress that smaller parks and gardens should not be
sacrificed and still play a positive role. Lead author Dr Iain Stott, from the University of Exeter’s Environment and Sustainability Institute (ESI) on the Penryn Campus in Cornwall, said: “As populations continue to grow, it’s vital that we expand our cities and build new ones in a way that is most sustainable for ecosystems, and which provides the greatest benefits to urban residents.
“Our research finds that compact developments that include large green spaces are essential for the delivery of ecosystem services. For humans to get the most benefit however, combining this approach with greening of built land using street trees and some small parks and gardens is the best method.”

Visitors from across the UK and abroad say that the new venue and new date for SALTEX 2015 are key reasons behind their decisions to pre-register for the free to attend event.
The NEC Birmingham has well connected transport links to the rest of the country – with more than 75 per cent of the UK’s population situated within just three hours from the venue.
Plus visitors who decide to travel by Virgin Rail can receive 25 per cent discount on their ticket fare.
IOG members that bring their membership card to the show are
eligible for a £5 car park voucher at the NEC.
The new look SALTEX, which also marks the 70th anniversary of the show, will feature a comprehensive programme of free educational seminars and will, for the first time, combine with the Institute of Groundsmanship’s (IOG) annual Industry Awards dinner.
Visitors can attend any of the 47 educational seminars on the show floor, hosted by partner associations and industry experts, within the two-day LEARNING LIVE programme –many of which has CPD points
connected to them. The seminar theatre next to the IOG Hub will feature sports turf management panel debates with high-profile industry professionals taking centre stage.
Two further theatres will feature dedicated seminars relevant to those working in the school, play, amenity, parks, arboriculture and forestry environments.

SALTEX Enquiry 2Two proud Made in Britain members have joined the campaign to ‘fight the flab’ in one of the most deprived and obese cities in the country.
The Great Outdoor Gym Company (TGO) from Kent has been working with Hull City Council since the London 2012 Games in the city’s attempts to deliver its own Olympic legacy.
TGO has installed eight free-touse outdoor gyms in Hull that are readily accessible to people of all ages and abilities, breaking down the barriers to physical activity and acting as a gateway to improving health.
Now TGO has engaged Made in Britain founding company Zaun, which was the main perimeter and security fencing provider for the London Olympics, in enclosing the latest Hull project at Barbara Robson Park in Sutton Village.
TGO founder and MD Matt Delaney, ex-London Director of Sport England, PE teacher and professional basketball player, wanted to help communities get more active by offering high quality training facilities in every community.
He said: “Hull has been a brilliant pioneering partner for us in championing our green
energy gyms. We have a real opportunity to transform local parks and playing fields into health and wellbeing spaces for the whole community and tackle health issues from the angle of prevention rather than cure.”
The waiting is almost over. The new-look SALTEX at NEC Birmingham takes place next month and we have a full preview of the show to get you ready for the main event. It will undoubtedly be an important two days in early November, not just for the IOG but for the industry as a whole.
The IOG has invested a lot in the new format for SALTEX. Something needed to change as the event has suffered over the last five years and not just because of falling attendance figures.
New SALTEX promises to be bigger, better, more interactive and more in keeping with what the industry as a whole wants. The big question is whether that is actually true or not. Does the industry want SALTEX?
There was a fair amount of negative reaction to the initial announcement that the IOG was making big changes to SALTEX. But that appears to have dissipated over the last 12 months.
In terms of the exhibition there has been a significant response from the manufacturers and other companies providing services and products to the industry. The NEC will accommodate an impressive array of companies over those two days, including machinery manufacturers showing off their latest models.
In terms of the education programme, the IOG has put together an impressive collection of seminars and talks that will help improve best practice for the industry. SALTEX will also provide a fitting backdrop to the IOG awards. The IOG has played its part. Now it is up to you and the rest of the industry to signal their support and visit NEC Birmingham.
In recent years BTME has provided a much-needed boost to the start of the year, creating a buzz within the industry. SALTEX can pick up on that in the months leading up to the show and take the industry through to the end of the year.

The trade association Interpave is exhibiting at The Flood Expo at ExCeL, London on October 14 and 15 2015.
Interpave is the driving force behind concrete block permeable pavements and will be promoting the latest developments with this important sustainable drainage (SuDS) technique.
As an established technology with proven performance, concrete block permeable paving is uniquely placed to play a key role in SuDS as a source control and storage facility, requiring no additional land-take. Not only can it reduce, attenuate, store and treat rainwater runoff near the surface, meeting current SuDS guidance, it also provides completely level, well drained and slip-resistance surfaces accessible to all.
A key strength is an ability to remove water-borne pollution offering fresh opportunities with a gradual supply of treated water that can be exploited for harvesting, ecology and – particularly –innovative landscape design. This covered in the latest edition of Interpave’s ‘SuDS + Permeable Paving Today’ guide, reviewing the latest government measures for implementation of SuDS, which will be available at the show.
The Flood Expo 2015 is the largest event of its kind in the world and presents solutions to widespread flooding problems with 80 expert seminars, informative debates covering current issues in the industry, live demonstrations on the Thames and 150 innovative industryleading suppliers.

A total of 49 BALI members out of 108 entries received have won awards in this year’s prestigious BALI national landscape awards in association with horticulture week and headline sponsors Green-Tech.
Not until the awards ceremony at the Grosvenor House, Park Lane, London on Friday December 4, however, will they know who has won a Principal Award, Special Award or the coveted Grand Award, and tickets for the ceremony are going fast.
The adjudication panel, chaired by Greg Allen, Senior Lecturer in Landscape Studies at Writtle College, spent the summer visiting the schemes and met at BALI Landscape House at the end of August to agree the list of winners.
Commenting on this year’s entries, Greg said: “Our BALI Awards judges have again
travelled the length and breadth of Britain visiting some truly outstanding landscape schemes created and maintained by BALI members.
“The standard of workmanship achieved, whether in the domestic, commercial or public sectors, is inspiring and with so many excellent entries this year the task of selecting the Principal Award winners has taken hours of collective deliberation by the judging panel. We have been particularly impressed by client comment to the judges that has invariably highlighted very strong relationships with clients as fundamental to their scheme’s success.
“Working closely with their clients to meet any challenges with workable solutions would appear to be BALI members’ strong suit.”
BALI’s Chief Executive Wayne Grills was an observer during
the final adjudication. He paid tribute to the judges, who travel many hundreds of miles and give freely of their time an expertise each summer to ensure BALI members’ entries receive their full commitment and consideration.
“I have been privileged to observe, once again, our BALI Awards judges at work and marvel at the depth of their combined landscaping, design and horticultural knowledge,”
he added. “With such respected industry names selecting our winners, BALI members can feel particularly proud of their achievements.”
Full details of the winning entries can be found on the Awards website at www.baliawards.co.uk along with details of how to book tickets for the Awards Ceremony.
The Big Lottery Fund has announced that it will make another £20 million funding available to public parks and cemeteries in England – a £10 million investment in 2016/17 and £10 million in 2017/18.
This will be added to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF)’s existing annual £20 million Parks for People programme, which provides grants to restore and rejuvenate historic parks and cemeteries, making a total of £30 million available per annum.
HLF will also continue to make an additional £4 million available for projects in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Applications for the next round of Parks for People funding are open now until the 29 February 2016; the first grants from
this new investment will be awarded in June 2016.
Peter Ainsworth, chair of the Big Lottery Fund, said: “Green spaces are vital to the happiness and health of our communities, so we’re really pleased to be continuing our support for the Parks for People programme.
“In partnership with HLF, we’ve invested almost £290 million since 2006 in rejuvenating our parks to help make sure they can be enjoyed now and for years to come.”
The Lottery grants have allowed more than 126 historic green spaces to be revived. These include the £4.7 million restoration of Walsall Arboretum, a Victorian park which includes a Grade II-listed boathouse, two lakes, bandstand and the
clock tower; a £3.9 million restoration of Lloyd Park, Walthamstow, London, with the addition of new community facilities such as a skate park; £2.2 million towards the restoration of Brighton’s The Level playground, cafe and skatepark; and a £4.3 million transformation of 47ha Stewart Park, Middlesborough, birthplace of Captain Cook.
Earlier this year, seven parks won a total of £20.6 million HLF and Big Lottery Fund grants. In the summer another £34 million funding was announced to rejuvenate what were described as ‘some of the UK’s most precious, yet tired green spaces’.
The Association of Play Industries (API) is to appoint its first independent Chair.
Experienced business adviser and consultant Mark Hardy joins the API with a remit to lead the association’s strategic direction.
He holds a number of NonExecutive Director and Chairman positions and brings significant knowledge of the play industry as a former senior executive at Playpower, one of the world’s leading play equipment companies. He will be supported in his new remit by current Chair Michael Hoenigmann, who will take up the role of Vice Chair, along with the other elected members of the API Executive.
Speaking about his appointment, Mark Hardy said: “I believe in the UK we are approaching a tipping point as far as physical inactivity goes and particularly with reference to the inactivity seen in our children.
“Without tackling this significant issue from the ground up, we face the very real risk of the NHS facing further financial difficulties as it struggles to cope with the effects. Children are naturally hard-wired to be physically active yet inactivity as a root cause of obesity is now an entrenched child health crisis. Our children are simply less active outside the home and the opportunities for them to be so are dwindling.
“Outdoor play has an important role in tackling that problem.
Many children have no suitable place to play which is not only a national disgrace but contravenes their fundamental human rights.
The API mission, which I endorse and support, is to convince policy makers of the benefits of play and that the provision of high-quality play facilities will deliver health, social and economic benefits for every local community.”
The API’s recently launched #nowhere2play campaign puts public play facilities under scrutiny.

Amenity buyers and landscaping professionals still have enough time to get ready for the winter road and pathway gritting season if they quickly order salt supplies and spreading equipment, says ESPO, the UK’s largest public sector buying organisation, which has supplied the amenity and landscaping market for over 30 years.
The Leicester-based professional buying organisation says that, given the wild fluctuations in the UK’s winter weather – from ‘white outs’ in 2011/12 and 2012/13 to last year’s much milder winter buyers need to ensure they have adequate salt supplies and a network of storage bins to ensure they keep pathways, access roads and steps open.
ESPO head of catalogue, Ian Gibbins, explains: “With workload pressures and so many different calls on their budget
in spring and summer, amenity managers can sometimes struggle to maintain adequate salt supplies going into the autumn and winter months. They can, however, quickly get organised by using the right salt supplier and crucially, leaving adequate time for supplier deliveries.”
For amenity, paths, car parking and landscaping needs, buying organisations such as ESPO offer buyers brown or white rock salt from leading salt suppliers in 25kg bags through product catalogues.
Amenity managers and buyers can ensure they have effective spreading operations on the ground by providing smaller storage bins through their amenity or parkland area. Buying organisations offer simple options such as hard wearing 8- and 16 x 25kg-bag capacity salt bins through their catalogues.
Amenity organisations can also benefit from the free UK delivery and no minimum order requirements offered by big buying organisations like ESPO.
Salt spreading equipment options for amenity organisations include four types of pedestrian salt spreader, ranging from smaller, highly manoeuvrable units for steps and pathways, to larger more rugged units, including vehicle-mounted models, for treating larger paths, roadways and public spaces. With spreader units generally made to order by suppliers however, buyers need to check on delivery times to ensure they get the equipment they need in time.
Ian Gibbins at ESPO says: “In recent years, landscaping and amenity teams have had to deal with continual budget cuts, but they still need to take some essential steps to get autumn salt supplies sorted. Our advice is to
‘plan ahead’ so that you have adequate salt and storage bins in your area - and don’t wait until the winter months or rely on forecasts of bad weather before ordering.”

Golf courses and sports grounds plagued by wildlife rifling through traditional metal cage waste bins or faced with ongoing repair and maintenance costs for timber bins will be excited by the launch of a new range of alternatives in PVC-U.
The new range of waste bins is being manufactured by PVC-U specialists Liversidge Windows, based in Oldham, and uses the same PVC-U panels and sections which have long been used to produce low maintenance, high performance windows and doors.
Owner Ian Liversidge came up with the idea when he saw the mess which wildlife were making on his local course by going into
the existing metal cage bins, and decided that he could do better.
He realised that by using the frames and corner sections which would normally be used to manufacture windows along with PVC panels and a hinged lid, he could produce bins which would be resistant to wildlife and at the same time practical, attractive and maintenance free.
His prototype proved so successful that the first of the new bins have now been installed on the Royton and Crompton course in Oldham with more to follow, each sponsored by a club member.

Compaction related problems are common place on sports pitches.
Dry patch, black layer and excessive thatch all lead to an inconsistent playing surface.
Compaction reduces the air spaces between the soil particles; restricting the passage of air, water and nutrients through the rootzone. The patented SISIS Javelin Aer-Aid 1500 machine greatly increases the speed of the aeration process by directly injection air into the rootzone at a fast working rate, creating thousands of fissures.
The cam trigger mechanism ensures that the air is always expelled at the bottom of the tine penetration. The overall result is reduced compaction and a healthier root growth. The 10mm diameter ‘tipped’ tines are spaced at 75mm (3ins) with depth of penetration infinitely variable to a maximum of
127mm (5ins). The air injection tines are designed to use the maximum air available from the compressor and produce clean, fresh air. Surface disturbance is also kept to a minimum.
The Javelin Aer-Aid 1500 has a working width of 1.5 meters and is extremely quiet in operation. It can be powered by a compact tractor as little as 30hp which also keeps weight on the surface to a minimum. It leaves an even finish that can be played on immediately afterwards.
Changing tines is simple and quick with very little maintenance needed on the machine. Alternative tines for other operations, such as hollow coring before top dressing, are available to make this SISIS a truly versatile aerator.

Over 80 representatives from Ransomes Jacobsen’s Iseki UK distributors attended a two-day dealer meeting at Trinity Park in Ipswich to view and ride a range new and current products.
Split into two days, the event was broken down into morning classroom sessions and afternoon ride ‘n’ drives.
In the classroom sessions members of the Ransomes sales and product management teams provided detailed information on the recently introduced TG range of compact tractors and updates on existing products including the Iseki SF450 cut and collect out-front rotary mower.
After lunch, the afternoon sessions provided the opportunity
to test all of the Iseki products distributed by Ransomes Jacobsen. The delegates were split into five groups and were able to drive each machine on the vast acreage at Trinity Park, home of the Suffolk Show.
Also in attendance were Tadanori Kaneko and Satoshi Ishida from Iseki Europe, who also helped celebrate Iseki’s 90 anniversary.
John Quinton, Ransomes Jacobsen’s UK Sales Manager said: “The new TG range was very well received and the positivity from each group at the end of both days was remarkable.”
Mayford Hall bowling club in Surrey estimates that spanning over 60 years more than 50,000 people have walked over the club green.
This fact and the accumulation over the years of top dressings and the use of machinery had all contributed to compaction leading to severe waterlogging. The answer turned out to be Terrain Aeration deep aeration. Heavy rain on the green had for many years resulted in as much as half the area becoming submerged under standing water as deep as four inches, and there it would remain.
The Terrain Aeration Terralift machine, able to negotiate the narrow access to the green, was put to work with the metre depth probe, injecting compressed air to break up the compaction and relieve the panning.
Terrain Aeration completed the work by early afternoon on a day that became quite a social event, with club members filling the probe holes and seeing first-hand how the treatment was carried out.

Manchester United FC has seen its Toro fleet grow thanks to the arrival of a new Toro ProCore 648 and four Reelmaster 3100-D ride-on mowers.
The new ProCore joins two others, making the Premier League club owners of three pedestrian aerators; one at the Old Trafford stadium the other two at the club’s practice grounds.
Tony Sinclair, Grounds Manager at Manchester United, says the ProCore is one of the most
important tools he has at his disposal.
“What I like is the way in which the ProCore does such a precise, neat job with no heave. I would happily aerate with these just ahead of a game, the finish is so good,” he says. “The ProCore 648s provide vital year-round aeration for us and have proven to be invaluable. We were the first Premiership Club to use these tools and now everyone has one. They are versatile and dependable. I would not want to be without them.”
Tony adds he and the club have been long-time Toro users, with the four new Reelmasters joining an existing model to bring his fleet up to five. All are used for pitch mowing, a clean, well-presented finish rating as a priority.
“The mowers deliver a fine, sharp finish and are easy to use and set up,” Tony says. “Toro mowers are robust and reliable and they have never let me down. We have bought these new mowers because we knew what we are going to get. High performance matched to high quality. To work every day with a team of dedicated groundsmen at Manchester United, caring for not just the stadium, but the academy and practice grounds too, is such a rewarding job.
“We have 23 pitches plus the stadium to look after and we take great pride in each and every one,” he adds. “We have high standards to maintain so expect the equipment we use to meet our needs. Toro provide reliability, high performance and a first class finish, which are our top priorities.”

The chairman of the club, Peter Swann, is about to enter
his third season and is doing everything possible to make this happen, according to assistant groundsman Kevin Comming. The club has, over recent years, boasted a superb pitch which is in part thanks to the grass seed used. Kevin, who has been at the club for fifteen years, believes that the pitch really started coming into its own after Limagrain’s MM60 was applied.
Limagrain’s MM60 is the UK’s leading winter sports renovation
mixture and can be attributed with playing a key role in many of the finest sporting venues you see today.
The 100% Ryegrass formula, which is perfect for divot repair, is renowned for its extremely fast germination and its high wear tolerance. It produces fantastic aesthetic qualities and its high disease resistance provides ultimate protection. MM60 is also treated with HEADSTART GOLD, which is a
further development of the wellrecognised Headstart treatment and has been developed using the latest scientific findings and field experience. It is a natural revolutionary grass seed treatment that ensures rapid germination. It is perfect for enhancing performance sports fields, golf courses, lawns and amenity turf.

With the Rugby World Cup under way, DLF, who have supplied grass seed for the last two football World Cups, are a major supplier again.
Leicester City FC’s King Power Stadium has been chosen to host matches and head groundsman has historically used Johnsons J Premier Pitch.
“With the playing schedule we’ve been given,” explains John, “the pitch will be subjected to a lot of wear from a completely different species of player – from a ‘twinkle toes’ footballer to an 18 stone brute force machine of a rugby player.
“This means it is so important to use seed you can trust will deliver when it comes to it. Because of the known recovery of J Premier Pitch I have peace of mind that we be able to turn the pitch around as nine days after our last Rugby match we’ve got our first football game. It’s going to be hectic but the whole team is up for the challenge.”
They sowed J Premier Pitch in the summer, bringing them on a month earlier than they normally would to make sure the surface is as strong as possible going into the schedule.

John O’Conner Grounds Maintenance, operators of contracts throughout the South of England, Greater London and the Midlands, has upgraded their fleet of mowers working for East Herts District Council.
The new fleet of mowers from Ransomes Jacobsen, worth in excess of £200,000, was delivered by longstanding dealer Bartram Mowers at the beginning of this season.
The fleet comprises five Ransomes Parkway 3 triplex cylinder mowers and a Ransomes MP493, the latest wide area batwing rotary mower from the Ipswich-based manufacturer.
John O’Conner won the East Herts contract back in 2007 and over the past eight years has helped the Council win numerous Green Flag awards for the parks and open spaces across the district. Keith Warden, Senior Contract Manager responsible for the East Herts contract, said: “The swingout centre unit on the Parkways is a great innovation and makes maintenance, of this often difficult to access unit, easy. The MP493 is a highly productive mower, but it is also very comfortable for the operator, which is a significant factor when they are out for eight hours a day.”

David Warner, grounds and gardens manager, has been at Millfield School for 10 years and oversees the management of their world-class sporting facilities based over three sites. Millfield is internationally-renowned in particular for sporting excellence.

Natural Paving Products (UK) Ltd’s new Pewter Cobbles have been incorporated into a gold medal-winning garden at the RHS Tatton Park Flower Show 2015.
The company has teamed up with fellow BALI member Greenbelt Landscapes to support garden designers Anna Murphy and Sarah Jarman of design partnership JarmanMurphy in creating their impressive first show garden, which received excellent feedback from the judging panel.
Having worked with Natural Paving Products many times before, Greenbelt Landscapes were quick to recommend the

Living Wall specialist, ANS Global, has installed a stunning ‘living’ nine metre inverted cone at the second oldest theme park in the world, Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen.
The cone measures one metre wide at the base and grows to four metres wide at the top.
A spokesperson at ANS Global explains: “We worked with the architects to develop the idea from a simple sketch that they had produced. It was their dream to have a tall, evergreen structure in the striking inverted conical shape, so we worked out the logistics to make their dream come true.
“The sculpture has been created to make the biggest possible visual
impact with abundant greenery, yet the smallest achievable footprint to maximise the space available. We have incorporated birdsong and bedding plants, and Tivoli has the capability of adding in seasonal features such as decorations and pumpkins to keep the design fresh for regular visitors.”
The theme park managers don’t need to spend much time on maintaining the cone, because ANS Global has supplied a remote-controlled irrigation system which is monitored from its West Sussex-based head office.

Kersten are proud to announce the launch of a brand new linkage kit at SALTEX this year!
The new Category “K” linkage will allow front attachments
to be fitted to Sub compact tractors, such as the Kubota BX2350 and B50 series and other similar models. Customers have previously needed to purchase additional hydraulic or PTO kits
as well as brackets to fit between the attachment and another front linkage. This will eliminate that requirement, saving our customers a large amount of expense. We have seen the market for attachments in this category growing quickly in the last couple of years. We hope that this product will open the market up, finally making it much easier and more cost effective to use your tractor as a tool for all seasons.
Attachments available will include; Sweepers, Leaf Blowers, Snow Ploughs, Flail Mowers, Weed burners and a Weed Brush. This versatility allows professional users to get much more done, without investing in multiple tractors and dedicated machines.

The new ATT INFiNiSystem30 will be on display at stand F187 and brings ‘fine turf quality’ to ‘sports turf’ and provides new flexibility and performance for sports facilities.
Configured as a mower it provides an unsurpassed level of cut quality – but coupled with a range of SMART cassettes, for a range of turf management activities, it provides much more functionality than any other 30” wide pitch mower.
The INFiNiSystem30 is the bigger brother to the existing 22” and 26” models that are more at home catering for the needs of Golf. The 30” shares the same flexibility in being able to change
between hybrid power and pure battery. It has been designed to allow Groundsmen to calibrate the machine exactly how they deem suitable for their particular situation.
It has a floating head design that sees the cutting unit independent of the traction unit. A whole football pitch can be cut with dual DCLA batteries or a single LiPo battery costing no more than 50p in electricity to re-charge them. The unit is not only hassle free with no travelling to collect fuel, but truly ‘Plug-and-Play’ as it can be charged overnight and used in the morning.

The Micro-Spray has a narrow footprint so it can fit through most gateways and passageways to tackle hard to reach spraying areas. The design ensures it also has a low centre of gravity.
The comprehensive yet easy to use control box gives the
operator more control over the sprayer with changeable motor direction to either walk behind or in front of the sprayer, 12 motor speeds, bout marker selection and a battery level indicator.
Spray application rates, operating speed and the pump pressure can be accurately and quickly controlled by the operator.
The Micro-Spray utilises two 12 volt batteries for power giving 3 to 4 hours of continuous use depending on terrain, and the included smart charger ensures the sprayer stays topped up ready for when it is needed. It can be seen on stand D092.
Headland Amenity will be on stand D087 with the range of innovative turf nutrition, health and management products are progressively gaining recognition, finding a home on sports pitches and fine turf surfaces.

SALTEX 2015 will mark Everris’ first major UK exhibition since announcing that it has become part of the ICL Group. Visitors to stand H030 will be able to receive a great insight into this transition as well find out more about the company’s Turf Rewards scheme. The transition from Everris to ICL paves the way for strong development and growth for the future and will signal a number of benefits for the company’s widespread customer base. As well as an expanded product portfolio, there will be an even stronger emphasis on innovation and products to ensure that the company continues to bring customers the most innovative solutions for healthy grass, plants and crops. In the UK there will be a gradual phased transition from Everris to ICL, with the ICL name gradually replacing Everris on product packaging and in marketing and communications through the course of 2015/16.
Both Xtend Soluble 46-0-0 and Xtend Liquid 34-0-0 provide field longevity of 2-3 months. To enable Turf Managers to carry out multiple tasks in a single spray, Xtend can be effectively tank mixed with many other Headland products.
A compatible mix could be with a low-rate iron product such as Headland’s Elevate Fe. This complexed liquid iron formulation does not result in staining to the turf due to its unique chemical nature, and allows spraying right up to key events.
Of interest on hard surfaces and for synthetic maintenance is Headland’s New-Way Weedspray. This fast-acting, non-selective herbicide is based on naturally occurring ingredients and is active against most soft tissue it comes into contact with, controlling grasses, broad-leaved weeds and, most importantly, it can be used for moss control on hard surfaces and artificial sports pitches.
Headland Amenity Enquiry 83Wiedenmann UK brings its widest ever product to stand A080 but happily it folds to an easily transportable size.
The Terra Rake, a perennial favourite, has been re-engineered giving show visitors first opportunity to see how the 4.6m wing span doubles both output and width.
Integral to the new design is a folding frame making the versatile verticut harrow significantly more time efficient for sizeable areas. In essence the folding frame means that two separate same-sized units either 1.6 m or 2.1 m, can be transported together and ‘joined’ when in work mode, the folding mechanism operating hydraulically from in cab controls.
Appearing alongside will be a new 1.7m electric trailed draw bar option of the Terra Rake
with electric wheels which doesn’t need linkage attachment. Another all new design, it features a four row configuration of tines and is ideal for working in more confined areas where power units have easier access.
Again in keeping with their continuous commitment to R&D, Wiedenmann’s Mega Twister also unveils two new options. It introduces an easily attached goose neck spout so the wind nozzle can be set parallel to the floor, the new position optimising the massive output. The second development is an electrical operation to the nozzle.
Wiedenmann UK’s stand will also feature two Terra Spikesthe XD8 and the Gxi8 –plus the capacious Super 600 3-1 mower/ collector / sweeper.

Every year across the UK, hundreds of old synthetic surfaces are removed and replaced by newer ones. It’s a trend that’s set to escalate as Sport England and The FA continue to invest heavily in All Weather Pitches (AWPs).
Companies such as Xtraction, however, have been campaigning to end this practice and to promote a viable, ethical alternative. And director Tim Gallagher is also on a mission to ensure clients who
upgrade their AWPs are made aware of potentially huge savings they can make from the residual value locked in the old surface.
Tim said: “I believe much of what is removed - carpet, sand and infill - can, and should, be re-used. Carpet can be cleaned and re-laid. Sand can be treated and used again, along with a percentage of rubber infill, which can be tested under laboratory conditions to ensure it still offers good performance.”
Xtraction will be exhibiting at Stand A105 at Saltex, enabling visitors to find out more about its pioneering process of reclamation, recycling and reuse.
They can pick up literature and see a video of the company’s state-of-the-art Turfmuncher machine, which is capable of reclaiming vast amounts of reusable infill on-site.

Thatch and debris can be common problems on football pitches but Glenn Campbell, academy head groundsman at The Academy of Light, has found a way to clean up his act.
Using a Votex VT420 compact vacuum sweeper supplied through Greenlay our dealer for the North East, Glen maintains clean surfaces at the UEFA five star training facility for all of the Black Cat’s academy players and first team.
Although the centre opened in 2003 the Votex has only been on the site for 18 months and has now become an important part of the maintenance programme, operating at specific times during the season across his pitches as Glenn explains.
“We use the Votex a lot at this time of year because there’s a lot of debris coming off the surface, so we use it a lot from now until November time,” he began.
“But we also use it during the renovations to pick up any debris that has been left after koro-ing, and again from March to the end of the season to pick up the thatch and debris that’s flicked up by the player’s football boots.”
The impressive suction power and low overall weight of the Votex has been a real improvement for Glenn giving a much cleaner operation and lower surface impact.

Makita has introduced more tools for grounds care and horticultural operations that are powered by twin 18v Lithium-ion batteries designed to deliver 36volt performance.
Many grounds maintenance professionals and landscapers already have a number of Makita 18v Li-ion batteries with their Makita power tools and as they are compatible they can be used to generate 36v energy.
Until now adaptor plates have been available to facilitate two batteries but the new machines now have the machine bodies designed to directly accommodate the twin 18v batteries as a standard feature.
By harnessing the power of two 18v batteries on one machine the overall power amperage produced is actually higher than that of the single 36v battery.
Newly released products benefiting from the new Makita twin battery range include a leaf blower.
The new DUB361 LXT 2-speed blower will produce 4.4 cubic metres of air per minute with an air speed of 93 metres per second. In low setting the twin batteries will give 51 minutes run
time. The DUH551 LXT hedge trimmer has a convenient 550mm double-sided blade that will run up to 1,800 strokes per minute and cut up to 18mm diameter branches. It has five alternative handle positions and variable speed control.

The Professional Leaf Suction Unit by SCH is a leaf eating machine, powered by a 9hp Honda engine. The unit is mounted on a two-wheel chassis with a towbar and can be attached to a leaf collecting trailer which can be supplied by SCH on request – or the customer can modify and use their own. Leaves are sucked up through the 200mm wide hose. They are then chopped by the fan as they enter the trailer which greatly reduces the space they take up and so reduces the number of times the unit has to be emptied. The wandering hose has a comfortable handle and can reach underneath rows of trees, into flower beds and up to the edges of walls.
SCH Enquiry 117The new Self-Propelled Little Wonder Pro Vac SP is 30% faster than its nearest competitor. It provides superior airflow with a powerful Honda GX270 engine creating the vacuum to fill the debris bag without loss of suction.
Working at your speed it will move at up to 4.2mph/6.76km forwards and up to 1.8mph/2.9km backwards, clearing leaves, litter, bottles, cans and stones, with the nozzle height automatically adjusting to work on rough terrain, without digging in, and on smoother areas without scalping. There’s no need to stop the engine to adjust the height.
The Pro Vac SP takes the drudgery out of raking leaves by not only vacuuming them up but also mulching them all in one step, ready to compost or use as a mulch to improve soil quality in beds and borders. The capacity of the bag is a whopping 180 litres to handle big loads.
When you make a product that produces hurricane force winds you don’t just sew in a bag liner, you install a ‘windshield’ to divert dust to ground level.
Safety is a key factor and to get the job done safely the low 40” unit height allows for clear visibility over the machine and a better view of the front nozzle area. For operator comfort the arched paddle handle allows a user of any size to find a comfortable operating position. Manoeuvrability is made easy with a sleek design and rugged front wheel swivel to effortlessly follow curved walkways and drives. Heavy-duty treaded rear drive wheels allow excellent traction on both concrete and grass, while free-wheeling is made easy too with a ‘toe-tap’ dump valve.
Schiller Groundscare Enquiry 120A sweeper collector that is a scarifier and a flail collector all rolled into one has to be on the wish list of most turf professionals.
In reality there is one in the shape of several models in the Wessex ProLine STC range. No longer are there the restrictions and costs of having individual machines to do each job, with the STC easily converted using the optional change kit.
So you might start off with the scarifier in the spring, adding in the flail when the fast growth begins and come the autumn fit the sweeper for clearing leaves and litter.
As a scarifier, the STC is fitted with with verti-cutting knives for a professional operation on the sports field or lawns. Semimounted to the tractor, the STC runs on its own four wheels,
totally independent of the tractor, allowing it to follow contours, while the front wheels are fully castoring and repositioned by a simple pin mechanism to adjust the working height.
As the whole machine is not lifted on the linkage, the STC can be operated behind a small tractor with limited lifting capacity. Power is transmitted from the tractor through a heavy cast gearbox and belt drive to the rotor. The rear wheels have flotation tyres to keep turf compaction to a minimum.
A large diameter steel drum with flails and paddles converts the Wessex STC to a flail collector. It features four rows of closely spaced flails, and two rows of draft paddles to create the suction for collecting the grass.
Unlike many collectors the STC has no narrow throat so long
or short grass will be collected efficiently without blocking, even in wet conditions. This makes it ideal for long grass applications such as the rough on golf courses. In the autumn you can take the STC to the park in sweeper collector mode.
The brush rotor comprises four banks of hardwearing polypropylene bristles which lift leaves, grass clippings and litter with ease into the hydraulically operated hopper. The bristles
are secured firmly into a predrilled hardwood strip and are of a generous length to give a good ‘flick’ action to ensure the material is thrown to the back of the hopper. The Wessex ProIine STC is available in 1.2m and 1.8m working widths for the maintenance of amenity turf, golf courses, parkland and large gardens.
Wessex International Enquiry 121Eight of Wiedenmann UK’s range are designated for leaf collection and if you count all the different widths and sizes available you can choose from 14 machines.
The Terra Rake in five sizes from 1.6 m to 4.6 m is both fast and thorough in pursuit of autumn debris. Inquisitive spring tines forage and gather impressive volumes of fallen leaves guiding them tidily for rapid uplift, very often working in tandem with other equipment.
Potential partners to the Terra Rake are most obviously Wiedenmann’s Material Collection Systems – the MCS Favorit (600 or 850 litres) and the MCS XP (1200 or 1500 litres) which feature distinctive whisper fan technology. Leaves are sucked and compressed instantly. The Favorit fits front or mid mounted decks with compact tractors and can access
tight spaces while for big open areas the rear mounted MCS XP collector comes into its own..
Specifically for turf sweeping, the neat RK120z at 1.2 m wide is another way to go, collecting cut grass and leaves as it passes over.
Wiedenmann’s two multipurpose blowers the Mega Twister and the Whisper Twister are key leaf management essentials with two brand new features set to be unveiled.
The first is an easily attached goose neck spout so the wind nozzle can be set parallel to the floor, the new position optimising the massive output. Also new is an electrical operation to the nozzle. This addition allows tractors with just one double spool valve to operate the “left to right” swivel action hydraulically and the “up and down” motion via an electric ram thus not requiring a second
hydraulic service which is not always standard.
The two new accessories to the Wiedenmann blower range means users can also direct the outlet spout to different angles depending on the conditions, particularly on undulating ground.
Finally Wiedenmann’s most coveted performers in this sector are the Super 500 and Super 600 3-in1 collector/sweeper/mowers. Highly acclaimed particularly by golf clubs and estate owners because of the power of work and versatility the Super duo can be set to mow, scarify, sweep and collect effortlessly. With either 2.5 m³ or 4.5 m³ capacity the containers lift via a parallel system to a height of 2.1 m while rotating the hopper to discharge collected material.
Wiedenmann Enquiry 124The Airion Blower is a great example of Pellenc’s innovative electrical technology in providing a smooth, quiet and powerful operation every time.
Weighing in at just 2.5kg, the Pellenc Airion is one of lightest blowers on the marketplace and is perfect for use near noisesensitive areas such as hospitals, schools, camp sites and towns.
The Pellenc Airion is fitted with a 4-level speed selector that optimises and adjusts the speed of the air propelled according to the working environment. It also features an instant boost mode that delivers a maximum power of 750 W which is extremely useful when removing wet vegetation or heavy waste.
Its protective grill is removable and interchangeable which makes for easy maintenance, and with savings of least £6 per day in petrol, it’s no wonder that more and more people are embracing Pellenc’s electrical technology.
The Pellenc Airion blower can be used near noise-sensitive areas such as hospitals, schools, camp sites and towns. It is also
perfectly suitable as a cleaning tool for roads alongside sweepers at any time of the day and it works just as effectively as a replacement for the traditional sweeper in towns as it does in parks and gardens.
The progressive trigger enables the airflow to be controlled very precisely. The principal advantage is efficient battery management.
On roads, the trigger can prevent the scattering of gravel. The inlet grille has been specially designed to reduce the sound level as much as possible while maintaining exceptional blowing performance.
Lithium-ion technology combined with the Pellenc motor means that the Airion emits very little CO² into the environment, giving the tool a very clean image.
Comparing the direct emissions of CO² of the Airion with a petrol blower, the difference is enormous. A petrol engine blower has a direct emission of over 4 tonnes of CO² per year while the Airion only emits 47 kg.
The Airion prevents almost 99% of the direct emissions of a petrol engine. If Pellenc batteries are recharged with the recently launched Solerion solar charger, direct CO² emissions are totally eliminated.
SCAG has taken on the manufacture of a well-established range of blowers and vacuums and STM will be including them as part of their sales range.
SCAG decided to take on the manufacture of blowers and vacuums to complement their well-known and well-respected range of mowers and purchased the “Giant-Vac” company. There then followed a long development period whilst they rationalised existing design and manufacturing in keeping with the acknowledged high standard of SCAG build.
They are distributed in the UK by STM Co Ltd. Starting with the Consumer Vac: This is a pedestrian unit for “direct capture” of leaves and debris in the easy-to-remove 280 litre capacity bag. The intake nozzle is 650mm wide, and can be easily
adjusted for height and angle from the handlebars.
Next in the range are the wheeled Classic and Extreme “cyclone” type blower types. There are three in the Giant-Vac range, all featuring comfort-grip handlebars that house the throttle control and selector for discharge direction. Motors go up through the range from 5.7 to 11.7HP, delivering CFM rates from 1392 up to 2824.
STM have found the next-up TL20W tow-behind unit has found favour, with a major Council, for example, having just purchased four in one go. The range is 26.5 / 29HP with a hand-held and supported 12” dia hose and overhead discharge chute leading to an 8” dia flexible steel tube. CFM rate is 4680. The unit has two large wheels at the back and a jockey wheel on the trailer hitch.
Winter is just around the corner, and there’s a wide range of equipment to help deal with snow and ice in public spaces and sports facilities, reports Jane Carley.
The only predictable aspect of the British weather is its unpredictability, and in recent years, contractors and amenity managers have found that it pays to be prepared, with snow and ice clearance solutions to meet their needs on hand ‘just in case’.
When choosing winter equipment, suitability for the sites to be treated and the power units available has to be kept in mind. Parts availability and service provision is also significant, especially as much winter kit is imported.
DMMP works with a wide range of contractors, estates and single site users, providing a bespoke winter service and offering after sales service. The company also partners with suppliers of
Jacques Shelton, Business Development Director comments: “Our most successful machines are the Earthway pedestrian salt spreaders, with which any individual or company can make headway with snow and ice management. These versatile machines, which come with a five year warranty, can be used for application rates from 3g/sqm to high output salt spreading. Spread widths are up to 7m, and the design offers vertical agitation to improve the flow characteristics of poorer materials.”
The two most popular commercial machines offered by DMMP are the 2040Pi dedicated high output machine for salt and the versatile Flex Select series, says Jacques.
solid control linkage. It is mounted on 22cm pneumatic tyres and comes fully assembled.
With a range of stainless steel or powder coated, twin tube or single tube chassis options the Flex Select high output spreader can be a pedestrian machine or converted to towable. It is available with a 36 or 60kg hopper and is mounted on 33cm pneumatic tyres.
“Our Magnum 12 volt powered vehicle mounted machines provide a more industrial approach to salt application and offers a range of market leading features, from performance feedback controllers, groundspeed control and 90kg high power vibrators.”
Demand from larger contractors in the last few years has led DMMP to introduce a range of trailer mounted 2000 and 2500kg machines.
“We have worked with a leading UK manufacturer of trailers to introduce a new typeapproved machine specifically for our units that can be rated to 2700, 3000 or 3500kg depending on the vehicle GTW or machine capacity,” explains Jacques.
“These machines come in either 12 volt electric or fourstroke Honda GX power plant types, both of which come with a three year warranty.”
“The 160kg machine also has a five year chassis warranty and can be used in conjunction with a forklift, tractor, car, truck, UTV or ATV. Due to the size and success of our manufacturer, one of the market leaders in the USA, we can offer a huge range of machines.”
Durable and flexible Preparing early for the worst the British weather can offer helps local authorities and contractors to ensure that their winter maintenance system is ready to be operational come the first snows, suggests Wessex International, importer of the SnowEx range.
Designed and manufactured to perform in the harshest of environments, SnowEx is built tough in its North American homeland, with a complete range of spreaders from 47 to 4500 litre capacity. The spreaders can
be mounted on virtually any host vehicle including ATVs, UTVs, 4x4s, pick-ups, tractors, trailers, forklifts and flatbed trucks and there are pedestrian units, so there are options to suit all situations and conditions.
SnowEx spreaders feature 12V DC direct drive motors mounted in a weather-tight enclosure to ensure reliable power in every situation. The hoppers are built in high density UV protected polyethylene for zero corrosion and reduced weight. They are all bright, safety yellow for high visibility.
Frames are constructed in modular steel for built-in strength with electrostatic powder finish.
Drives feature a maximum torque transmission with a hardened steel worm and bronze gear, with no chains, pulleys, drive belts or gears to break or wear.
Many of the spreaders have incab control units for precise operation of spinners and augers, preventing overspreading and material wastage, while offering greater comfort and safety for operators. To complete the system, a steel auger feed is designed to give a more positive and accurate supply to the spinner compared to a conveyor belt.
Logical solutions Since its launch in the late 1990s the Logic GDS Salt Spreader has proved to be an invaluable winter maintenance tool for many different customers in a huge variety of industry and municipal sectors, says Logic Today’s Will Rutherford.
“Through its specific design for the UK market which primarily uses road/rock salt, it provides a reliable and efficient method of application. In short, as testified by many satisfied customers, it works!”
Features include the use of a moving-floor conveyor system similar to highway sized salt spreaders to convey the salt to the spinning disc system. The hopper will hold 465 litres (550-600kg depending on moisture content) of road/rock salt and is capable of spreading all types of material as well as wet rock salt, including grit and sand.
A purpose-designed agitation system and conveyor floor ensures wet or dry material can be spread effectively and accurately by a spinning disc.
“The GDS Salt Spreader is built to withstand the harsh conditions which occur when using road/ rock salt - the corrosive effects of salt can quickly bring equipment to a premature halt unless it has been designed to cope,” comments Will.
“One of the major benefits of the GDS is that it can be towed behind any suitable towing vehicle, including 4x4s, pickups, UTVs or tractors. This makes it very quick to deploy at the first signs of bad weather and for winter gritting jobs it
dramatically reduces the time needed to complete the task, when compared to the manual alternative of spreading salt or gritting using shovels.”
The GDS has application rates of between 5-80 grams/sqm and working speeds of between 5-15mph mean you can cover the ground quickly with a maximum travel speed of 30mph back to base for quick refilling.
“This model range is not recommended for contractor or multi-site use where long distance of travel is required between spreading. For this use, our PDS range comes with full road suspension and over run brakes, or as a demount unit to be fitted into a vehicle.”
For ATVs or quads the GDS150S model is ground driven and ideal as a smaller capacity machine.
The GDS range comes with two equipment options – the ‘R’ model features full lighting and mudguards, recommended when working in amongst other vehicles; and optional flashing beacon, fitted either to the
spreader or towing vehicle is also recommended. The ‘S’ model is supplied without any lighting or mudguards for where the machine is only used in a traffic free environment.
Will adds: “If type approval is required, our PDS354RB series complies with this latest legislation. This would be a requirement for any salt spreader expecting to be taken on the road at normal road speeds over long distances, such as contractor or multi-site usage.
Spreading widths are variable and the unit can cast the salt to the left or right to spread it under parked cars.”
GDS Salt Spreaders are part of a wide range of winter maintenance products supplied by Logic.
The LDS range of ground driven spreaders is available for use with bagged, free-flowing deicing products; 12v Broadcasters with capacities from 85 to 300 litres are also suitable for these products.
Logic’s de-icing sprayer range is available with capacities from 60 to 600 litres for specialist antiicing liquids.
The range also includes snow ploughs of 1.5 and 1.8m in width for ATVs and UTVs.
Wiedenmann UK has added the Vario Flex to its Snow Master range of winter clearance blades.
The Vario Flex is a fully adjustable blade said to have a ‘chameleon quality’ of readily changing its working shape. It can operate in a straight line to the left, to the right, in a V shape or in an arrowhead formation, for maximum versatility.
This development upgrades the existing Vario blade giving each of the four widths a tilting capability of 30deg to the left or
right which helps with ‘up close’ or work at an edge. The operator simply makes the adjustment from the cabin.
Robustly constructed, the Vario Flex is supplied as standard with two hydraulic cylinders. The spring flap mechanism on the low part of the blade responds immediately to any uneven ground it encounters while the upper part, tilted or otherwise, routes snow off to the side for improved performance in uneven terrain.
Especially good in confined and narrow spaces it is ideal for pedestrian areas and car parks.
The Vario Flex comes in four widths – 1.38, 1.67, 1.86 and 2.0m and depending on the width has either four or six spring flaps. It attaches to tractors or power units from 25 to 80hp.
Launched initially last year in Alpine Europe the Vario Flex won an ‘innovation medal’ at GaLaBau 2014.
Kersten UK Ltd supplies the Meyer Drive Pro, an easy-to-use, fully functional steel snowplough operated from the comfort of a pick-up or van.
“Unlike other snowploughs of this size, the DrivePro goes up, down, right or left with the push of a button. The DrivePro
attaches or detaches in well under a minute with the pull of one handle; and once attached, you don’t need to leave the vehicle to angle the plough,” explains Kersten’s Sean Faulkner.
“There has been considerable demand in the UK for this type of plough, so we have developed a wide range of brackets to suit most models on the market. Our ploughs have been tried and tested in the UK over the last five winters, so we know they are up to the job.”
Weighing in at around 130kg, the two-metre DrivePro plough is suitable for mounting to most one tonne pickups and up to 3.5 tonne vans. Full lighting kits are available for use on the road.
Gianni Ferrari out-front mower units add value for purchasers with the ability to fit a range of equipment including winter maintenance implements.
The front linkage and PTO allow snow chains, a snow blade, snow thrower and salt spreader to be fitted for the majority of machines in the range.
Some models can also be fitted with a soft cab or heated comfort cab to keep the operator in a comfortable environment even during winter time. Heated seats are also available.
Many of the units also have four-wheel drive for improved performance and safety regardless of conditions.
Gianni Ferrari’s Turboloader wheeled loader features an articulated chassis and equal sized wheels for manoeuvrability,
with a telescopic boom which can be fitted with a snow blade, snow thrower or salt spreader for winter maintenance tasks in awkward or restricted spaces.
Quad-X has launched the True Grit commercial specification
salt spreader range, capable of spreading damp salt using a feed mechanism which continually pushes material forward, irrespective of moisture and consistency to help prevent clogging and facilitate an even spread of salt. The machine is available in various capacities and models from 120 litres in a towed model, up to 600 litres in a mounted model, suitable for pick-up trucks.
Spreading can be activated from inside the vehicle and spread width can be adjusted via a user friendly control unit giving precise control during operation. With an adjustable spinner position, spread can be offset to the left or right. Quad-X says that the True Grit spreaders are simple, reliable and effective, providing an affordable alternative to large scale belt drive machines.
Quad-X also offers a 60 litre capacity ATV-mounted salt spreader, which fits to the rear rack and is powered by a 12v motor to ensure an even spread. The plastic hopper is UV stabilised and durable while the stainless steel spinner and shutter plates help reduce corrosion.
Quad-X offers a British-built alternative to other six bag spreaders on the market. The 300kg capacity salt spreader is a ground driven, towed
with UV protected plastic hopper, wheel bushings, and dished spinner for excellent spread widths.
It is specially designed with a specific gearbox with a gearing ratio for improved traction in icy conditions. Knobby 189.5x8 tyres are fitted as standard, with four-stud hubs to allow for easier wheel changes. These salt spreaders have adjustable flow rates with the necessary deflector plates and special agitator kits for optimum spreading of salt. The Supermount system fixes to the underside of the quad and can
be used with numerous Quad-X attachments. Quick release clips allow a snow plough to be fitted or removed in less than 10 seconds.
The Quad-X Snow Plough is spring-loaded to cushion collisions with obstacles and is fitted with adjustable skids and a replaceable two-sided blade which can be angled left/ right and can be lifted very high since the pivot point is at the front. Quad-X snow ploughs are designed to fit on most ATVs, with wider models to suit utility vehicles and compact tractors.
Simon Richard, UK agent for the Reform bank tractor range says, “Having machinery on the fleet that can be used year around on a range of different tasks should be the aim for both local authorities and professional contractors and the Reform Metrac model range with snow plough or snow blower attached, offers both sectors a proven comfortable and safe combination for snow clearance on all types of terrain up to an angle of 45deg.”
Fife Council has been using a 62hp Reform Metrac H6X bank tractor for four years and Roy Daniels, health, safety and training officer for the authority says, “We added a snow plough to the armoury for our harsher winter work and this has given us the performance we were looking for on our many severely sloping sites.
“We are now able to work confidently where we would not feel safe putting an operator on foot.”
Reform offers tractors from 40hp-70hp in its Metrac G series and 46hp-81.5hp in the Metrac H (hydrostatic) series.

Simon Richard Enquiry 143With offices in Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire, Nightingale Contract Services Group – a multi-service provider offering commercial cleaning and related support services – has seen its grounds maintenance division thrive thanks to an investment in Toro.
Having successfully served public sector and commercial clients across the East of England, Midlands and London for over 30 years, focusing mainly on contract cleaning, the business decided to move into grounds maintenance in early 2014. Once the first contract was won, the firm set out in search of a flexible yet portable mower.
Opting for the Toro CT2240, Nightingale’s landscaping manager Paul Reed says: “We needed a good quality machine that was large enough to cope with the sports fields, but also nimble enough to cut most of the smaller areas around the school.”
One of the mower’s key criteria for Paul, however, was that it could be driven into the back of a large 3.5T van for transportation and added security. With its narrower transportation width compared to other triple reel mowers, the Toro CT2240 was ideal.
“It didn’t take long before the school commented on the how
nice the grounds and beautiful stripped pitches looked thanks to the quality of the cut and the rear rollers on the reels,” he says.
Adding that Lely are a “great company to deal with” from purchase to ongoing maintenance and service, Paul hints at a future Toro purchase for next year.
He says: “We feel the customer support and technical backup they have provided has been excellent. We will be looking next year to add a larger rotary machine to the business and will not look further than the Toro range from Lely.”
To help maintain its impressive 300 acre farm in the rolling hills of Devon, Edenvale Turf has recently purchased Trimax Mowers’ largest machine –the X-WAM. Described by Edenvale’s managing director Steve Light as ‘the best mower’ he’s ever had, the X-WAM is a wide area mower and can be purchased either as a complete unit or as an attachment for the Trimax Pegasus 610 roller mower. It features a huge 10.4m cutting width, a cutting height ranging from 10-110mm and full width rollers for striping, a precision cut, safety and
versatility. The X-WAM has superior contour following abilities based on the unique combination of individual floating decks and articulated axis. It has the potential to cut 33 acres per hour and users will be able perform zero-turns without having to lift any of the mower decks. The X-WAM can easily be folded up to 2.8 meters (9′ 2″) for transport, with the hydraulic wing lift system; something which Edenvale’s turf grower Martin White is particularly impressed with.
Providing access into the most confined environments, the CT offers the ideal solution for grounds maintenance at schools. And with independent cutter unit lift control and a wide cutting width, productivity is uncompromised.
After Leicester City was promoted to the FA Premier League last season, head groundsman John Ledwidge and his team were treated to an influx of grounds machinery.
As a result, John had only one company in mind and purchased seven Dennis G860 cylinder mowers.
Promotion for Leicester City ensured that John received
seven Dennis G860 professional mowers. Four G860’s are based at the club’s training ground to maintain the first team pitches while the remaining three G860’s at the King Power are relied upon to prepare the pitch for matchday.
With a number of unique features and benefits, it is easy to see why the G860 ‘ticks all the boxes’ for so many groundsmen like John. The Dennis G860 has eleven quick changeover cassette
options giving ultimate flexibility and a single power unit for many day-to-day maintenance tasks.
It also features a large diameter front roller with an adjustable scraper which has been designed for a precise height of cut control, giving an excellent finish on every occasion.
Forest Green Rovers Football Club in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire, is unique in that it is the only club in the UK to have an organic pitch.
Head groundsman Matt Rainey (pictured) re-joined the club earlier this year and one of his first tasks was to look at the issue of machinery noise and the sourcing of a battery powered mower.
“I first saw the ATT 30” INFiNiSystem on Twitter,” explained Matt, “and asked The Grass Group to give us a demo. The striping was excellent and the quality of cut fantastic. You can’t fault it, it’s a precision piece of kit, very quick but very easy to use. They left it with us for a week and a half and we were so impressed with it we decided to hire it until such time as we could sort out buying it.”
Sand based pitches, like that at Forest Green, tend to compact more and having the 30”INFiNiSystem weighing only 138kg, as opposed to other mowers which weigh upwards of 330kg, was a major factor in Matt’s decision. The ability to use differing cassettes is also of interest, especially the SMART Sarel roller.
Matt again, “Whilst the initial cost with the LiPo batteries is more than a comparable engine powered mower, the running costs are very much less. With the solar panel on the roof of the grandstand, it doesn’t cost us anything to charge up the battery; but even if it did, the cost of electricity would be far less than petrol – so the equipment pays for itself over time.”
