Nation’s favourite park named by Fields in Trust

Fields in Trust’s search to find the nation’s favourite park has declared Stanley Park in Blackpool as the UK’s Best Park 2019 following a public vote.

The UK’s Best Park is organised by green space charity Fields in Trust who, for over 90 years, have legally protected parks and green spaces ensuring they will always be available for future generations to enjoy.

A record 364 nominations were received for the UK’s Best Park 2019. Those nominations were supported by visitors, communities, Friends of Parks groups, and local authority landowners. An unprecedented total of 36,832 votes were cast for parks and green spaces across the UK.

Stanley Park in Blackpool topped the poll, in its nomination it was described as “… a beautiful, tranquil place away from the hustle and bustle of the Blackpool seafront”.

The “great volunteers and staff who keep it in tip top condition” were also recognised in the online nomination. Stanley Park triumphed over the other Home Nation winners shortlisted for UK’s best park:

• Antrim Castle Gardens, Antrim, Northern Ireland.

• Cyfarthfa Park, Merthyr Tydfil, Wales.

• Pittencrieff Park Dunfermline, Scotland.

In addition, 73 parks and green spaces have achieved “Much Loved” status, having been placed in the top 20% of all UK’s Best Park 2019 nominations throughout the UK. The “Much Loved” status recognises the support of local people who regularly use and love these parks and green spaces.

The UK’s Best Park Award recognises the role that parks play in our communities, supporting mental and physical health and providing a space for communities to connect.

Innovation to be key feature of SALTEX 2019

and Fleet Line Markers all highlighting significant new product advancements.

Visitors can also refer to the show guide to browse through all of the products currently being considered for the SALTEX 2019 Innovation of the Year Award.

Recently Fields in Trust published the Green Space Index a new barometer of parks provision which revealed that over 2.6 million people across Great Britain live more than ten-minutes’ walk from a park or green space.

With public sector cuts leading to pressure on parks and green spaces, there is the risk that a lack of legal protection could lead to more spaces being sold off or developed.

Fields in Trust

Fields in Trust is concerned that many parks and green spaces are under threat and are at risk of being lost to development or a cycle of decline and disappearance.

Fields in Trust Chief Executive, Helen Griffiths said: “We received a record number of 364 nominations for local parks and green spaces across the UK - each one setting out what is special about their own green space.

“Public support has been unprecedented with 36,800 votes cast demonstrating that people really do love their local park.

“Parks are important places where we all go to play, enjoy sport, relax in natural surroundings and connect with our neighbours. Fields in Trust is committed to protecting these vital parts of the UK’s community infrastructure for future generations to enjoy.”

Finalists announced for IOG awards Growers prepare for year of resilience

Growers attending the latest HTA Ornamentals Committee meeting on 19 September reported an extremely positive twelve months of trading with many citing record years.

With so many variables on the horizon including biosecurity, Brexit, plastics and water it is certainly a difficult time for planning and looking ahead the consensus was that 2020 would be a year of resilience rather than growth.

As part of HTA’s ongoing commitment to keep members informed about Brexit the group heard directly from the lead officer from Defra’s EU Exit team who presented an overview of the changes around importing and exporting plant products if there is a no deal Brexit.

The latest Brexit update, which includes key flow charts from Defra, can be found at www.hta.org.uk.

The meeting also saw the appointment of Martin Emmett, Strategy Director for Tristram Plants as the new chair of the HTA Ornamentals Committee, taking on the role from Geoff Caesar, who has stepped down after six years.

In his last meeting as chair Geoff Caesar, comments: “Despite the usual fluctuations of the weather throughout the season it is encouraging to see that growers attending reported good growth this year with strong demand for UK grown stock.

“It was recognised with all the challenges ahead 2020 would be a year of resilience rather than growth. It was really useful to have a direct summary of the position around importing and exporting plants from the Defra EU Exit team. I encourage all businesses who have not yet looked at what they need to do to prepare to do so urgently.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed the period I have spent chairing the committee and believe that having a strong trade association is essential particularly during a period of political uncertainly. It is healthy for the chair to change and I look forward to continue working with Martin and rest of the Committee in the future.”

Incoming chair Martin Emmett, Strategy Director for Tristram Plants comments: “On behalf of the Committee I would like thank Geoff for his strong and effective leadership in his role as chair. The Ornamentals Committee is a vital industry voice in these challenging times and I look forward to ensuring that the interests of the sector are effectively represented.”

The finalists have been announced for this year’s prestigious Institute of Groundsmanship (IOG) Industry Awards which acknowledge the passion, dedication and challenges faced by grounds staff,

The awards dinner will be hosted by BBC TV presenter Dan Walker on Wednesday October 30 at The Vox, located in Resorts World at the Birmingham NEC, on the evening of the first day of the SALTEX exhibition.

Commenting, IOG chief executive Geoff Webb says:

“With so many memorable sporting events to celebrate this year, the IOG Industry Awards’ shortlist rightly includes the grounds teams that have created the playing surfaces across all sports for such sporting drama.

In addition, of course, this year’s awards also recognise the efforts of grounds people at all levels and at sporting venues of all sizes.

“This is the 11th consecutive year that the awards have uniquely provided a national stage for the achievements of everyone involved in groundscare and we should applaud everyone who took the time to enter as well as those who have reached the shortlist.”

GMA sets out road map towards sustainable growing media

The Growing Media Association (GMA), a group of manufacturers and suppliers producing over 90% of growing media used in UK domestic and commercial sectors, continue to make progress with the industry road map.

Timelines for two initiatives demonstrate the action and commitment towards achieving sustainable bagged growing media for the consumer market in a manageable timescale.

Steve Harper, GMA lead for the Responsible Sourcing Scheme comments: “It is important that the environmental performance of all growing media ingredients are assessed and that all growing media is made from raw materials that are environmentally and socially responsibly sourced.

This is where the Responsible Sourcing Scheme can make

a real difference. By the end of 2019 an auditable scheme will be in place allowing all growing media manufacturers to undertake an audit by the end of 2020.”

As part of the road map towards reducing the use of peat to zero in growing media within a manageable timescale, a university research project has been commissioned to look at the socio-economic impact of the use of all materials and the barriers to change. The results of this are expected in 2020.

The road map also includes goals such as improving the quality of green compost so that it can fulfil its potential in the growing media market through the widespread adoption of existing protocols.

It’s about obsessing over the little things, the details no one else sees. It’s never tolerating anything less than the best. Perfection is a mindset. And that’s worth being proud of.

Student greenkeepers celebrate Toro awards success

The British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association has revealedJason Norwood of Rudding Park Golf Club in Harrogate has been named the UK’s top student greenkeeper at the 31st Toro Student Greenkeeper of the Year Awards. Alongside Jason, Tom Bromfield of Trentham Golf Club earned the title of Toro Young Student Greenkeeper of the Year in just the fourth hosting of that prize.

The Toro Student Greenkeeper of the Year Awards is a national contest hosted by greenkeepers’ association BIGGA and sponsored by turfcare machinery and irrigation manufacturer Toro alongside official UK distributor, Reesink Turfcare. This year saw a record number of nominations for the prize, meaning the finals were as hotly-contested as ever.

Each year, a selection of the best student greenkeepers, selected from regional interviews hosted across the country, head to BIGGA House at Aldwark Manor in York for the two-day finals of the event. During their time at BIGGA’s headquarters, the candidates complete a variety of tasks designed to test their industry knowledge and their commitment to the profession.

Jason, 30, dedicated his victory to his sons Max, 4, Harvey, 1, and his wife Laura, who he has been with since he was just 16.

“I’m absolutely shocked and shaking,” said Jason. “ I can’t wait to tell my family. I put a lot of work and planning into my studies, particularly going to BTME this year and getting everything I could out of that. I haven’t really any words to say, this is the pinnacle of my career so far and the biggest thing I’ve ever achieved.”

As part of his prize, Jason wins a seven-week scholarship at the University of Massachusetts in the USA, as well as a trip to the GCSAA’s Golf Industry Show in Orlando and a trip to Toro’s headquarters and R&D centre in Minneapolis.

The Toro Young Student Greenkeeper of the Year Award is open to students under the age of 20. As winner, Tom receives a two-week work placement at the exclusive Vidauban Golf Club in France, as well as a trip to BTME in Harrogate.

Tom, 18, is an apprentice at Trentham in Stoke on Trent. He said: “I’m a bit shocked, I wasn’t really expecting that!

“But I’m really happy with the result. Reece, the other apprentice at Trentham, was here last year and he was a big help to me. I’ve a lot of respect for not only Reece but also Ed Stant and Jim Fox at Trentham as they’ve really helped me out and they’ve given me the chance to get this award, so I can’t thank them enough.”

The runner-up in the Toro Student Greenkeeper of the Year Award was James Dawson of Oulton Hall Golf Club. The runner-up in the Toro Young Student Greenkeeper of the Year Award was Josh Marshall of Worcestershire Golf Club.

Jim Croxton, CEO of BIGGA, said: “Greenkeeper education in the UK continues to take strides forward and it is more than matched by the enthusiasm of the student greenkeepers we meet as part of the Toro Student Greenkeeper of the Year Awards process. There is no doubt the nation’s golf courses are being prepared to standards never seen before and the incredible finalists we have met over the last two days once again prove my belief that the greenkeeping industry will overcome any challenge that the future has in store.”

David Cole, managing director of Reesink Turfcare and award judge, said: “The enduring pleasure of ours and Toro’s long association and support of this educational award is the enthusiasm, career passion and commitment to personal development that we come across with every set of candidates and across every year of this career-enhancing award. The greenkeeping profession continues to be in bright and focused hands.”

Applications for the 32nd Toro Student Greenkeeper of the Year Awards will open in February 2020.

Land Trust and MowMow celebrate successful start to partnership

The Land Trust and MowMow are celebrating a successful start to their partnership which they hope will inspire children across the UK to spend more time outdoors and feel healthier and happier as a result.

Since teaming up in July, and launching the partnership with the first event on the Land Trust’s site at Wellesley Woodlands, hundreds of children have taken part in the rock painting craze on Land Trust sites across the country.

MowMow is a free to download app, available on the Apple Store and Android Google Play store, which combines technology with a good old fashioned game of hide and seek, resulting in a fun activity that gets children moving outside in the real world.

Children paint the rocks and leave them for people to find. The MowMow app allows players to give each rock a name and date of birth, log where they hide their rocks and then receive notifications whenever their rocks are found. It also tracks how many miles the rock has travelled and has a leaderboard to encourage competition too.

The Land Trust’s Director of Portfolio management, Alan Carter, said: “The reason we decided to team up with MowMow is because we had a shared ambition of inspiring more young people to get outdoors and living more active, healthier and happier lives.

“The first few months of our partnership have been a resounding success with hundreds of children enjoying a creative activity in the great outdoors.

“What has been particularly pleasing to see is how some of our users with Autism at Port Sunlight River Park, have responded to the activity, highlighting the wide range of benefits that spending time in green spaces can bring.”

Royal guest of honour for Perennial Festival Dinner

Perennial’s Patron, HRH Princess Alexandra, will be guest of honour at the charity’s 180th Anniversary Festival Dinner at the Corinthia Hotel on 11 October.

Her Royal Highness will be joined by Perennial’s President Alan Titchmarsh for the evening, which aims to raise over £30,000 to help people in horticulture who are facing life-changing events.

Anita Bates, Director of Marketing and Fundraising

at Perennial, says: “We’re delighted that HRH Princess Alexandra will be joining us for the evening at the Festival Dinner. Perennial’s history lies in the great estates of Britain and as we celebrate 180 years of the charity for people in horticulture, it’s important we recognise that we are as relevant today as we were in 1839.

“The Festival Dinner is a chance to show your support for Perennial in the company of friends,

Co-founder of MowMow Matt Faulkner said: “Discovering new places and developing that sense of wonder and adventure is a vital part of any childhood –MowMow gives children another reason to get outside and explore.

“The game was already incredibly popular but the app takes things one step further, allowing families to plan their routes, share photos when they find their rocks, and track their step count along the way.

“The events that we have hosted with the Land Trust have been really well received and we look forward to continuing to work with them as we work towards our shared goal of getting more young people spending time outdoors.”

colleagues and well-known faces from across the industry. It’s a not-to-be missed event!”

Preparing the ground for a sensational golfing event

Europe

Team

Gleneagles enjoyed a unique position in golfing history when the biggest event in women’s golf concluded last month – it became the first venue in Europe to have hosted both The Solheim Cup and The Ryder Cup (in 2014).

With Team Europe triumphant by a single point after three days of world class and tense golfing competition, golf courses manager Craig Haldane, director of agronomy and estates Scott Fenwick, their greenkeeping team and a small army of volunteers could reflect on a hugely successful event.

The Jack Nicklaus-designed PGA Centenary Course looked and, according to both teams, played magnificently. As the excitement built to fever pitch on the final day of competition, the team that prepared the course looked on with contended smiles.

That team included John Deere and local dealer Double A, who had been equally busy behind the scenes in the run up to the event and during the competition itself.

John Deere is the official golf course and turf maintenance machinery event partner to Gleneagles for this 16th biennial edition of The Solheim Cup. The company has a long association with professional golf, having been a title sponsor on the PGA Tour, official supplier to the PGA Tour for over 25 years, official supplier to the Ladies European Tour and a partner at numerous Solheim Cup events.

In addition, John Deere is partnering Gleneagles by exclusively providing golf course maintenance machinery and ancillary equipment for use across all three championship golf courses.

Craig Haldane explained: “Typically we aim to maintain all three courses at a very high level all year round, but we upped the ante for The Solheim Cup.

“Closing the course three weeks prior to the event allowed it to recover from any stress and provided additional time to prepare and introduce a higher frequency of cut. By fine tuning our existing practices we’ve been able go up another level in terms of a quality cut and finish for the tournament.

“We were also very fortunate to benefit from the extra resources and experience provided by the volunteer greenkeepers supporting our team this week. Eight of the 52 volunteers were women, who joined our own Laura Campbell and BIGGA’s head of membership services Tracey Maddison to help with the course preparations.”

A team of John Deere technicians were also available to help maintain the equipment and handle any issues during preparations and the tournament itself. In 2019 John Deere and its dealers are supporting more than 10 major tournaments in the UK and Ireland, every month from the Betfred British Masters at Hillside Golf Club in May to The Solheim Cup at Gleneagles and the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth in September. This involves providing specialist support staff and more than 150 machines including walk-behind and ride-on greens mowers, tees & surrounds, fairway and rough mowers, compact tractors and Gator utility vehicles.

“Traditionally we work closely with the individual club’s course managers and greenkeeping teams to help keep all the machines in the fleet serviced and ready for work each day, and ensure all cutting units can achieve the highest possible quality of cut,” says John Deere Limited turf division manager Chris Meacock.

“This partnership approach helps everyone to achieve the best possible results where they matter, out on the course, and keep things running as smoothly as possible throughout the event.”

Head of LAPU’s Landscape Division, Kellie Wake, travelled to Gleneagles to hear how John Deere helped the greenkeeping team get ready for the Solheim Cup and watched some of the action as Team Europe beat the USA. won The Solheim Cup for the first time since 2013 after an incredible finish to the final day singles, which ended with Suzann Pettersen holing the decisive putt on the 18th green to send the thousands of fans into raptures. USA looked set to retain the trophy when they needed a half point from any of the final three matches, but Europe won all of them to secure a sensational victory. With Anna Nordqvist closing out a 4&3 win over Morgan Pressel and Bronte Law beating Ally McDonald 2&1 in the final two groups in the minutes preceding, Pettersen and Marina Alex were both on the 18th green and with makeable putts for birdie. Alex missed and Pettersen, one of Captain Catriona Matthew’s wildcard picks, stepped up and rolled in an eight-footer to give Europe the point they needed to get to the all-important 14½. Team Europe went wild; the Americans were stunned. John Deere

Experts point to a valuable lesson for all councils from NCC Streetscape

In talking to local authority engineers recently, it has become very clear that the information in an independent investigative report, which was made following a detailed eight-year durability evaluation and with site inspections by the team from Paving Expert. com that was carried out in 2017, would be of tremendous assistance to all town and city councils, district and other unitary authorities around this country.

The historic Hitchin Market paving refurbishment and repointing project using GftK’s vdw 850 plus Paving Joint Mortar was now carried out after extensive evaluations and field testing for 12 months by the responsible engineers, completed 10 years ago, and just as in the inspection two years ago, in 2019 after 10 years service, it is still look good, performing in all weather conditions and under frequent heavy traffi cking of this busy market square.

“After 8 years it looks like it was jointed yesterday” - these were the words from www.PavingExpert. com when they visited to inspect the paving refurbishment that they had last witnessed underway on the site eight years ago, when the traditional granite sett paving of the historic Hitchin Market Square in Hertfordshire, was refurbished and repointed with GftK’s vdw 850 Paving Joint Mortar.

The expert continues: “The paving had been patched and pointed, repointed and grouted, glued and all sorts over the years, but nothing lasted long. They might get a couple of years, but before you knew it, the setts were a rocking and rolling all over again.

“Faced with the prospect of having to lift and re-lay the whole square, at huge cost, the Local Authority and their Consultants undertook some tests and decided to have one last roll of the dice with what looked like a very promising product:

Like many old town centres and market squares, this is now a very different and demanding environment for paving and particularly the pointing, due to multiple heavy-duty loadings and all sorts of modern traffic exposure, plus frequent mechanical street cleaning.

However, working in phases, without closing the market, this project was completed on time and on budget, because work could continue and be completed using GftK’s vdw 850. This unique paving joint mortar is based on graded, water dispersed, epoxy resin coated and bound,

alluvial, no-fines quartz sand. Nofines means no-dust produced in mixing either - very important for occupied streets with people and businesses continuing to work.

Just as the contractor can continue to work, even despite the wet weather and low temperatures throughout, which would have made any cement based or single-pack paving pointing mortar useless and doomed to failure.

Today, after 10 years, the historic market paving is still looking great, a valuable asset to the Town; most importantly it will also continue to do so.

Rigby Taylor amenity supplied continued success at Cromer LTA

One measure of the calibre of any sporting venue is not only the level of use of the site but also the number of favourable comments made about the quality of the playing surfaces.

Cromer Lawn Tennis & Squash Club (LTA) can lay claim to both – thanks to the expert court maintenance regimes instigated by head groundsman Matt Jordan and his use of a range of Rigby Taylor amenity products. These, he says, “prove indispensable in enabling us to keep our grass courts playing well and looking good all through a busy season.”

Based on the Norfolk coast, Cromer LTA is open for play on weekdays during the summer months from 9am to 10pm, and on weekends from 9am to 8pm during the summer and 9am ‘til 4pm in the winter. The facilities are heavily used throughout the year. The 10 grass courts are open

from April through to September, when play switches to the two floodlit artificial courts and the pair of hard courts. They utilise a well-practised pitch care regime that, says Matt, begins when the tennis season ends in September as court renovations begin.

“We will start with a concerted programme of heavy scarification when most of the sward will actually be removed,” he says. “Then we spike and apply a light covering of Kettering loam before applying Rigby Taylor’s R9 ultra fine dwarf rye seed. We’ll keep off the surfaces for two/three weeks before we start cutting – to 14 mm high – and we’ll continue to cut to this height every other week throughout the winter.

He continues: “During this time we will apply various Rigby Taylor products and we’ll spike and slit once a month in preparation

for the new season, which starts in April. That said, I avoid aerating and spiking after perhaps February/March, depending on the weather, to avoid encouraging cracking on the courts. The ‘T’ in Germin 8T identifies the content of the Trichoderma atroviride filamentous soil fungi that forms a mutual endophytic, beneficial relationship with grass plants. The symbiotic relationship delivers increased tolerance to the turf diseases leaf spot, pythium and rhizoctonia.

Pre-applied to each individual grass seed, Germin-8T contains a speciality surfactant that is activated when the seed comes into contact with rootzone moisture.

This provides effective penetration of water through the seeds’ outer layer (pericorp) into the endosperm, by lowering the surface tension of the surrounding water molecules.

Roots can also take advantage of the micronised mycorryhizal fungi that will deliver long-term plant benefits. The result is that at the active germination stage, each emerging seedling has immediate access to a highly beneficial package of targeted nutrients, biostimulants and micronised mycorrhizal fungi that together aid early establishment, improved root mass development and accelerated leaf extension.

Councils and universities meet to learn about urban meadows

Representatives from councils and universities from across the UK come together at the Pictorial Meadows HQ in Sheffield for a day-long masterclass on Urban Meadows.

As more cities, towns, and communities choose urban meadows as landscaping solutions that meet a wide variety of needs, the day offered delegates the chance to network with others planning meadow projects, access the specialist knowledge of the team at Pictorial Meadows, and explore a site full of floral meadows.

“We started running our Meadow Masterclass sessions a few years ago, but this year have seen a huge rise in demand for the event,” says Jonathan Wild, Commercial Director at Pictorial Meadows.

Alongside speakers from the company, the day included a talk from Professor Nigel Dunnet from the University of Sheffield on the future of planting in public places, and the differences between urban meadows and rural conservation meadows.

The research and work completed by Pictorial Meadows has enabled urban meadows to be economically created in areas ranging from small raised flower beds to eightmile central reservations, offering improved biodiversity and pollinator food availability whilst providing dazzling, colourful displays for passers-by.

As urban meadows continue to grow in popularity, both as public landscaping solutions as well as in private spaces, Pictorial Meadows are fi nding new ways to share their knowledge and help people and organisations to realise the benefits of urban meadows.

ISEKI goes where everything else cannot at Wallington

The ISEKI SRA800 has proved to be invaluable to Wallington Estate. Managing the woodland paths and garden areas has been made so much easier with the brushcutter, replacing strimmers and many hours of manual labour, according to Head Gardener Simon Thompson.

The large team have a wealth of machinery to support the upkeep of the garden areas which covers over 300 acres.

One of these vital machines is an ISEKI SRA800.

“Compared to its competitors the build quality of the SRA800 is much better along with a very competitive price point,” said Simon.

“The addition of hand controls makes for extra comfort whilst using the machine, it is easy to keep clean, service and it has a good quality engine. The excellent manoeuvrability of

the machine is vital due to the layout and landscaping of the gardens. This machine will take everything up to saplings down in its path, saving so much time which can then be dedicated to further improving the gardens.

“Whilst the SRA800 was purchased specifically for brushcutting, should we have any mower down we do utilise it on the lawns, it leaves a brilliant well spread

finish every time. The service I receive from Rickerby our local dealer is second to none.

“This is the first piece of ISEKI machinery I have used, the build quality of the machines and the well thought through design surpasses the competitors. I will definitely consider ISEKI for any future machinery purchases.”

Aggregate Industries ups the tempo with low temperature asphalt

With the industry under increasing pressure to use sustainable materials in road construction, Aggregate Industries has launched Superlow, a low temperature asphalt enabling quicker, more environmentally-friendly project completion.

Specially formulated for use on highways and road infrastructure schemes, this range of asphalt is mixed at 20°C-40°C lower than hot mix asphalt.

As it requires less energy to manufacture than conventional asphalt, Superlow ensures a lower carbon footprint.

The launch of this innovative solution comes just a month

after the UK became the first ever country to legally commit to cutting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to ‘net zero’ by 20501.

With the equivalent performance characteristics of hot mix asphalt, when it comes to workability, however, Superlow remains compactable for longer at lower temperatures.

This allows more time for full compaction and, as a result, enhanced durability. It’s also longer lasting, as lower asphalt temperatures during production reduces binder ageing and enhances in service life expectancy.

FENCEMATE DuraPost offers an elegent and strong alternative

An industry first, Birkdale’s FENCEMATE DuraPost is an innovative galvanised steel fence post system that provides a durable, lightweight and windresistant alternative to wooden or concrete fence posts.

Due to its makeup of cold-rolled galvanised steel, DuraPost is capable of withstanding wind speeds of up to 70 miles per hour and is guaranteed for up to 25 years, so specifiers can be sure that they are selecting a quality product that will last.

While installing concrete fence posts can often by a twoperson job, due to their weight, DuraPost is ergonomically designed to be up to 80% lighter than concrete.

As such, the DuraPost is easy to transport, store, carry and

Smoothly does it at Ganton golf club for Toro irrigation

And it was an installation which went “almost too smoothly” according to deputy head greenkeeper Mathew Wormald thanks to the combined efforts of Reesink Turfcare and Green Irrigation.

“It’s so rare in life to have something deliver exactly what it says it will and this irrigation system does just that. From the start everything has worked well, performed and delivered exactly what we want, where we want it. Working with Peter Newton from Reesink and Rob Green from Green Irrigation has been a pleasure, in fact, installation went almost too smoothly, I kept thinking it can’t be this easy!”

The sandy course in the rural Vale of Pickering, which is one of the top 80 golf courses in the world, was once a North Sea inlet. Over the years the original characteristics of the heathland and links course have changed, and undulations have been lost due to woodland and heathland growth.

As a result, the greenkeeping team of nine have been restoring the more traditional aspects of the course. Some of the aprons have been made larger to widen the areas of play.

And it’s this that instigated the decision to replace the irrigation system, says Mathew: “The previous system was over 20 years old so we were coming up to the time to replace it, simply to take advantage of the technological improvements a new central control system, such as Toro Lynx, would offer.

But really the upgrade was made all the more urgent after the work implemented to update the course.

“Basically, the old sprinklers didn’t have the capabilities to throw the arc of water as far as we needed with the changes we’ve made to cover the bigger area of play on the greens. Full uniform coverage is so important, and we simply weren’t getting the reach.”

Mathew had a diverse CV before joining Ganton with stints in Belgium and Hong Kong, all of which bought valuable experience to one of the very few clubs to have staged the Curtis Cup, Walker Cup and the Ryder Cup.

Having previously used Toro irrigation, Mathew says: “I’ve used Toro irrigation before, so I was aware how easy it was to use and how precise.

We don’t rely heavily on our irrigation system here, mainly because the grass is deep rooting so we can push it a bit more and that’s another thing that appealed so much about the Toro system – we can be as accurate as we need to be, tackling only the areas that need it. This will be far more efficient for us long-term.”

And it’s not only Lynx and Infinity that are working so well together, as previously mentioned the relationship with Reesink and Green Irrigation delivered too.

Mathew concludes by saying: “It was a project that didn’t just bring us a solution to a problem, it introduced us to some really knowledgeable people in the industry and from start to finish was problem-free.”

Healthy water, happy fish at Millets Farm thanks to Otterbine

With two mature lakes covering roughly four acres and home to hundreds of fish, Millets Farm Fly Fishing Club takes its water quality incredibly seriously.

So, it’s no surprise it’s turned to Otterbine to help achieve the best water quality possible.

Having installed an Otterbine Fractional aerator last year in one of its lakes and seen vast improvements, the club has now opted to install a second Otterbine aerator which is vital to keeps its waters and fish healthy. Head Squared Aquatics chief executive Giles Head, who recommended and installed the Otterbine aerators for the club, explains.

“In the lakes at Millets Farm there’s a high level of anaerobic digestion, whereby bacteria break down organic and biological waste into carbon dioxide, ammonia and methane and this severely reduces the dissolved oxygen in the water.

“Plus, the lakes were suffering from thermal stratification, which is where the temperature changes at different depths in the lake which trout in particular are very sensitive to. It’s therefore vital to maintain high levels of dissolved oxygen to ensure the waters stay healthy, an even temperature throughout and suitable for aquatic life.”

And never has this been more evident to Giles than when one of the Otterbine aerators was damaged by fishing wire and had to be removed.

“Within just four days the oxygen levels dropped dramatically. Luckily for the fishing club they were loaned a replacement motor unit by Otterbine’s distributor Reesink Turfcare, so they could get the oxygen levels back to where they needed to be while their aerator was being repaired.

“But it just goes to show how delicate the water balance is and how quickly it can be disrupted.”

And with the poor results the fishing club were seeing with its last aerators, Otterbine has brought a welcome change, says Giles: “The club’s old aerators were only resulting in dissolved oxygen levels of between four and six percent. With the Otterbine Fractional aerators in place, the lakes are up to saturation point, getting the full amount possible.

“That’s why I recommend Otterbine systems,” he says. “I’ve been in the industry for a long time and seen that for every pound spent on an aerator, you’ll get twice as much dissolved oxygen in the water from an Otterbine than anything else. Plus, the customer service from Otterbine and Reesink is second to none.”

With the larger of two lakes at the club now benefitting from two Otterbine aerators, there are plans to potentially install another two in the other lake. Although smaller and served by a spring, and therefore not suffering as much and requiring the same urgent attention as the larger lake, ensuring water quality is the best it can be is very important to the club.

Eric Evans, fishery manager at the club concludes: “After speaking to Giles about the issues we were having, he supplied and fitted an Otterbine aerator after only three days, and within the week dissolved oxygen levels had reached super saturation and completely transformed the lake.

“We are thrilled with the service from Head Squared Aquatic and Reesink Turfcare, particularly with their loan of a replacement unit while ours was damaged, and we thank them both for their continued support.”

Canaries benefit from new Hunter irrigation technology

Norwich City Football Club is reaping the benefits of the latest Hunter Industries irrigation technology after new systems were installed at both the Carrow Road Stadium and the Club’s training ground; the Lotus Training Centre.

The system, which was purchased through KAR UK – a distributor of Hunter Industries irrigation equipment, consists of a variety of G995, I-40 and I-80 rotary sprinklers, ICV valves, an ACC2 controller with Wi-Fi, a Roam remote and the ST1600 system for synthetic turf.

Engineered specifically for sports turf, the I-80 is built with a robust, dirt-tolerant gear drive that offers the highest torque output of any rotor in the commercial sphere, and extends a radius range from 11.3 to 29.6 meters.

The I-80 features a wide range of highly efficient, dual-trajectory, wind-fighting nozzles for highly efficient performance in a range of applications.

It also provides total top serviceability (TTS) via its integrated, surface-mounted snapring for no-dig easy maintenance.

With the I-80’s working wonders on the pitches at the training centre, James has also been blown away with the results from using the ACC2 controller which is ideal for delivering advanced water management to meet the demands of large-scale commercial projects and the Roam remote - which eliminates the need to go back and forth to the sprinkler controller.

New 7.3m MAJOR Swift rollermower to make its debut

“The MAJOR Swift is a great performer and always leaves an excellent finish,” Phil nods approvingly. He’s been maintaining the grounds at Cirencester Park Polo Club for nearly 30 years so is particular that the turf provides a safe yet fast playing surface.

The exceptional doublewing design of the new MJ71-730T increases productivity and efficiency without compromising on the quality of cut. “The front and rear rollers ensure we leave a level and striped finish at precisely the right height of cut, every time. It levels the ground back down to its original condition after we’ve had eight or ten horses running over it.”

“Because it’s made of highstrength Strenx steel, it’s lightweight and avoids compaction, which is beneficial

to maintain the best ground condition,” Phil continues. “For a big machine, it is far more manoeuvrable than I expected – it can turn on a sixpence! It is also a very low consumer of power, therefore more economical with fuel.”

“We have a small team, so a reliable wide area mower is essential to alleviate time pressures and reduce costs,” continues Phil. He and his team at Cotswold Turf Care manage equestrian grounds, football and rugby pitches and golf courses, as well as parks across Gloucestershire. The team cuts a minimum of 6000 acres throughout the year. “The 7.3m Swift wings fold to 2.60m, making it great for safe road transportation between multiple sites. It’s about the largest make available that can be safely transported on the road.”

KAR UK to launch new Hunter TTS rotors

KAR UK is set to unveil a unique range of new Hunter TTS rotors at SALTEX 2019.

KAR UK – the leading wholesaler of irrigation equipment in the UK, will be situated on stand E053 at SALTEX 2019 and visitors can expect to find out more about a wide range of irrigation products from prominent international manufacturers.

Boasting an impressive portfolio, with a vast array of products on display at SALTEX, anticipation is already building around the soon-to-be launched new Hunter TTS-800 series.

The Hunter TTS-800 rotors provide maximum uniformity and longevity.

The high-torque gear drives are the strongest in the industry, so the challenges of reclaimed water use or poor water quality are mitigated.

An extra-large, fast-access flange compartment comfortably accommodates wire connections and other components.

The new 800 series feature Hunter’s patented TTS (TotalTop-Service) technology which allows for every serviceable element of the rotor to be accessed through the top.

Mechanical and electrical, big and small, you can get to every component without disturbing the playing surface. That means there’s no more digging, no more unsightly

scars, and more importantly, one less item on a busy turf manager’s schedule.

Another highlight on the KAR UK stand will be the recently launched ST-1700V rotor which offers unrivalled highperformance irrigation for synthetic turf.

Simplicity is the key to the ST-1700V as it integrates Valve-in-Head (VIH) capabilities and a TTS design to simplify installation and maintenance.

Hunter’s line-up of controllers offer an array of user-friendly features and smart controller water-saving options built to fit any sports and landscape irrigation system.

The modular design of the ICC2 and the ACC2 controllers set yet another industry standard for easy-to-use and expandable automatic irrigation controllers.

KAR will also demonstrate the new Centralus Software which is available to the ICC2 and ACC2.

Both of these controllers will be showcased on the stand at SALTEX.

SALTEX visitors may well be pleased to see the Rega Rainking on display – which is an ideal sprinkler for watering sports turf and can water the complete pitch in just 2 runs.

The unit is suitable for night operation which will help with water usage as less water is

evaporated in the early hours. The Rainking covers up to 38m width and with 135m cable will cover up to 175m length.

A trip to the KAR UK stand will also enable visitors to find out more about the innovative Kasco product portfolio which includes fountains and aerators for projects of all sizes.

The experienced KAR UK team will be on hand throughout the two-day event to provide advice and support for any of your irrigation projects.

New organic, chemical-free biochar products and an upgraded awardwinning turf management app will be showcased on the Sherriff Amenity stand (E060) at SALTEX 2019. On the first day of SALTEX 2018, Sherriff Amenity’s groundbreaking new app, PrecisionPro, was announced as the winner of the second, annual SALTEX Innovation Award. In the past year the unique app has been praised far and wide by turf managers.

PrecisionPro allows turf managers to have an accurate measured area by simply opening the app and walking the perimeter of the area. Calibrating spreaders has always been a difficult task but with the Calibrate feature in the PrecisionPro app, users are guided through each step of the process. Furthermore, its advanced GPS functionality informs the user when to start and stop the calibration process.

The app also features a function to ensure that every operator walks at the same speed – if someone is walking too fast or too slow then they are alerted by colour coded screens. As well as calculating the g/m2 and the operator’s walking speed, the Apply feature ultimately ensures that the exact amount of nutrition is being applied to the turf.

Now, PrecisionPro is returning to SALTEX 2019 with some beneficial updates including a new mapping function, a rain shroud and an updated user interface. Furthermore, one lucky visitor to the Sherriff Amenity stand will get the opportunity to walk away with the brand new app.

Sherriff Amenity is the exclusive UK distributor of Carbon Gold’s

Enriched Biochar Turf Improver, and the two companies will be joining forces at SALTEX 2019. Carbon Gold’s aim is to increase soil fertility and improve turf health through the use of biocharbased products and visitors to the stand will be able to find out more about these exceptional offerings including the all-new Biochar Raw and Biology Blend.

Enriched Biochar Turf Improver is a highly porous, high carbon form of charcoal used to improve soil nutrition, growing conditions and turf health. It is made from untreated waste woody biomass that has been charred at a low temperature with a restricted supply of oxygen, a process called pyrolysis.

Carbon Gold’s Turf Improver enriches biochar with optimum levels of beneficial fungi, bacteria and trace minerals for optimum soil and sward health. Where prevention rather than cure is key, adding enriched biochar to soil provides the foundation on which to build resilient, attractive, playable turf, as recent sports turf trials have shown.

The new Biochar Raw is recalcitrant and porous, making it a permanent refuge for beneficial microbiology. Biochar Raw is applied in lower rates over several seasons which will build the carbon up in levels adding the biology separately at optimal times with the new Biology Blend.

Throughout the two-day event representatives from both Sherriff Amenity and Carbon Gold will be available to discuss and assist with any turf related queries you may have.

New Walker mower to be unveiled

Walker Mowers will unveil for the first time in Europe their newest mower, the R21 ‘out front mower’ designed for a new generation of users.

Walker Mowers launched the concept of out front mowing technology some forty years ago, technology that provides ease of use, quality of cut, operator comfort, reliability and ease of maintenance, all demanded by its many commercial customers.

These features have been specifically designed and included in the new Model R, for the discerning domestic consumer gardener. Powered by a Kohler 21hp engine with Smart-Choke technology, for easy starting in all temperatures, the OHV engine design has a cast iron liner and full pressure lubrication.

The mulching design mower decks use special serrated

blades and bolt on baffles to provide that just collected look without the messy cuttings.

Available in two sizes 42”/48” (106/122cm), that fit into an integrated front-mount deck design, which means clear up-and-down and side-to-side movement minimising scalping and uncut grass areas.

UK Country Manager for Walker Mowers Steve Egerton said: “Our commercial and

landscape contractors know the benefits of this style of mower, without the loss of finish – whether that is in grass collection or the ever growing trend for mulching mower decks. With this new model aimed at the discerning domestic consumer gardener we feel very confident of its success.”

The new Model R mower will be unveiled on stand F030.

Turf machine from GI

Groundsman Industries will be exhibiting their all new TIM13 Trench Insertion Machine to insert Dripper-line Irrigation Pipe down to 15cm deep in a one pass operation to provide water directly to the root zone of any grass surface.

The insertion trench is created without removing soil thereby leaving very little trace on the surface.

Also on display the incredible Turf/Sod Multi Cutter range of two and four-wheel drive delivering exceptional cutting ability in all conditions with very low maintenance.

Groundsman Aerators are available in 45cm (18”) to 180cm (72”) working widths. All use Groundsman’s proven rugged Elliptical Plunge Action mechanism for aeration to 15cm deep. Quickchange accessories available for Solid, Hollow and Chisel Tining

Etesia to launch new products ahead of 2020 season

Etesia will be launching three new products on their new stand number E085 at IOG SALTEX 2019. The new products will include a ride-on mower, the new facelift Attila brushcutters and electric wheelbarrow. Full details will be announced on the first day of the show on 30th October.

Also on show will be the recently relaunched PRO46 PHTS3 single speed self-propelled and PRO46 PHE3 push pedestrian mowers.

Following the same concept of the PRO46 range of pedestrian mowers first launched in the early 1990’s, both models feature Xenoy cutting decks for increased strength, shear washer crank protection, individual height of cut adjusters, a new 22mm handlebar design, the latest Honda GCV170 engine and are supplied complete with 80 litre grass box and rear deflector as standard.

Visitors to stand E085 will also get the opportunity to see the new AK60 & AH75 pedestrian brushcutters, which were first shown to the UK market at SALTEX last year.

With built-in rugged reliability as standard, both models have been designed to work in the toughest of conditions.

These powerful workhorses effectively deal with clearing vegetation from a wide variety of sites – long grass, weeds, bracken and brambles on woodland paths, orchards, holiday parks and road verges. Ease of operation and manoeuvrability ensure total efficiency and high output.

New product brochures ahead of the 2020 season will also be available, as will the company’s knowledgeable staff to answer any questions.

True grit from Wessex

Wessex International have chosen SALTEX as the venue for the launch of PolarOne, their new range of professional salt and grit spreaders for winter maintenance.

Built in the UK to take on the harshest winter conditions, the spreader is constructed using stainless steel components and fixings together with powder coating for anti-corrosion longevity. Durability and weight saving are also the thinking behind the self-supporting design of the polypropylene hopper and integral liquid brine tank.

PolarOne can be trailer or vehicle-mounted. There are two models, the WS-900 (900L) and WS-1200 (1200L) and each has three options.

Model ST is a manually operated machine for those who just want a basic spreader, no speed control or data logging. Model GT has all the functions of the standard machine but with the addition of GPS speed control.

The system monitors changes in forward speed and spread widths to ensure precise application and minimal material wastage, for increased profitability.

The Commander has all the above with the addition of full telematics to remotely monitor the salt spreader back at base.

The set- up would have access to a real-time webpage and opens up a variety of additional facilities such as route logging, reporting and ring-fencing for fleet and productivity management.

The PolarFlo vibration system is a patented auto vibration control to manage consistent material flow, which is totally new and unique to the industry.

The spreader is suited to a wide variety of vehicles with its adjustable spinner height coupled with a convenient fold up feature. The spread direction is easily adjusted to bias from left to right by moving the feed chute position and there’s a safety emergency stop.

PolarOne’s extended auger design allows better weight distribution in the host vehicle and the large diameter auger, with delivery tunnel, manages the spreading of a large range of materials without blockages or leakage.

Wessex have achieved a unique, low maintenance design with the PolarOne spreader using no engines, belts, chains or grease points. The in-cab digital controller, with GPS connectivity, will adjust material delivery according to your vehicle speeds to maintain a consistent application rate.

A speed optimisation indicator will help you optimise your driving speeds to improve the accuracy of spreading and productivity of your equipment and reduce material wastage.

There’s a wide range of optional extras and plans to introduce prewet and spray bar options.

Brine will be available in 2020. Wessex will also display their ProLine range of commercial mowers and turf machinery at the show. See the PolarOne spreader and latest ProLine on stand K060.

Rediscover all the tools of the trade with Charterhouse

After launching to much acclaim earlier in the year, the OxyShot will be taking centre-stage on the Charterhouse Turf Machinery stand at SALTEX 2019.

Suitable for use on a variety of sports surfaces, visitors to stand K070 will see how the air-injection unit can relieve compaction, improve drainage and revitalise growth without the need for chemical applications.

The OxyShot uses a single 25mm probe to inject air into the soil in four directions, at a pressure of up to 110psi and to a maximum depth of 500mm (20”). It can also be fitted with an optional 14mm probe, to reduce the working depth to 250mm. Perfect for ‘on the spot’ treatments, the highly manoeuvrable unit can be easily transported for use in a variety of situations – from golf course walkways to goal mouths, tennis baselines and sports pitch touchlines. It can also be used for arboricultural operations, to deliver aeration to tree roots growing in compacted, air-starved soils.

The Charterhouse team will also be on hand to discuss the many new and future developments from the Redexim stable, including the newly re-modelled Speed-Seed range. Together with an updated livery, the popular dimple-seeder range has been extended to feature four new working widths – 1.1m, 1.5m, 2m and 2.3m.

For situations where drill lines need to be avoided, the SpeedSeed range is a popular choice. A spiked sarel roller creates 940 holes per m2, with a rear brush then sweeping the delivered seed into the mass of holes leaving a groomed finish in its wake.

An optional second roller can be fitted to double the number of holes created. With model sizes to suit a variety of environments, the Speed-Seed range is ideal for overseeding large or small areas, quickly and with ease.

There are two engine models – a 24.7hp and a 37.4hp, both Stage V emissions compliant, with options of 152cm (60ins) or 183cm (72ins) rear, side, recycling and flail cutting decks.

Toro has focused particular attention on the durability of the deck in the design of this new series. With 4.5mm high strength steels decks, rugged spindles, a bullnose bumper and reinforced sideskids, the improvements made are aimed at longevity and reduced downtime.

And with rotary and flail cutting deck options providing flexibility and value, it’s easy to see why Toro believes this to be the next generation of the outfront rotary.

Jeff Anguige, national sales manager for Reesink, says: “The outfront rotary has become part of the fl eet for most councils, contractors and golf courses as an essential frontline machine and rightly so.

“The new launches from Toro GM3000 series are an exciting addition, taking the design of an outfront rotary mower to the next level.”

The new Toro GM3000 series will be revealed on stand H010.

In addition to this exciting launch, there will be a full

The mobile goal revolution

Fourteen years after it launched the Easylift goal, which allowed equipment to be pushed and pulled around site after raising the frame above the playing surface, the latest innovation in training goal design marks a quantum leap forward to create a goal boasting ‘multidirectional mobility’.

Two years in development, the new ‘DevoShift’ wheeled

goal is intended for roll out on to synthetic and high-quality pitches. Greater mobility over frames currently available allows site personnel to steer a full-sized goal through perimeter access gates as narrow as six or seven feet across.

Launch of the goal coincides with the introduction of BSEN16579, a British and European Standard aiming to tighten up goal safety by eradicating pinch points that can trap thefingers, head or neck, as well as issues relating to crushing and shearing points.

John Deere launches commercial battery mower

John Deere is launching its first commercial electric battery powered walk-behind rotary mower at Saltex 2019 at the NEC in October (stand no. E080).

The new PRO 43B not only produces zero emissions, but also offers intuitive handling, fast charging and a high level of operator comfort. It is designed to enable professional users to easily cut smaller grass areas and clean up edges in public spaces, without the disturbance and nuisance caused by noise and fumes.

Built around an aluminium mower deck with steel reinforcement and alloy wheels for extra durability and

reliability, the PRO 43B has shown impressive cutting and bagging performance in preproduction field tests, says John Deere, with no compromise in performance compared with petrol engine driven mowers.

The 36V mower’s new Powerhead carries two rechargeable lithium-ion batteries and switches automatically to the second battery when the first one is empty.

Charging capacity is 6Ah as standard, with a full electric charge taking 2 hours 20 minutes and providing up to 500m 2 mowing capacity. A springloaded battery release system adds to the ease of operation.

Cutting width of the PRO 43B is 43cm and there is a choice of seven cutting heights from 22 to 80mm, easily set by a central lever.

The mower comes with a 45litre capacity grass bagger that features a simple TurboStar ‘bag full’ indicator flag, and a height adjustable handlebar that can be folded for storage. Overall weight with an empty bagger is 32kg.

The new John Deere PRO 43B commercial battery mower will be sold with a two-year warranty (one year on the batteries), and will be available from UK and Irish dealers in 2020.

Controlled-release fertilisers and proactive disease management under the Headland Amenity spotlight

Designed to fill the gap between traditional outfield and fine turf products, H-Cote Mini will be showcased on the Headland Amenity stand at SALTEX 2019.

The Headland team will be on hand to discuss this, together with their full range of innovative turf nutrition, health and management products on stand G050.

Launched to much acclaim earlier this year, H-Cote is a new range of mini-granular controlled-release fertilisers, suitable for use in all coarse and close mown turf situations including golf tees and fairways, sports pitches and racecourses.

It offers field longevity of 3 to 4 months thanks to the high levels (70-91%) of controlled release nitrogen, producing a

gentle and sustained release that minimises the risk of flushing or excessive growth.

The controlled release portion is surrounded by two layers of coating – the first, a thin polymer coating that covers the urea prill and the second, a mix of sulphur and polymer wax to provide protection during transport and application.

The dual-coat technology of H-Cote allows a high specific nitrogen analysis for each prill, with less risk of nitrogen lock-off.

After application, at rates as low as 15g per m2, moisture penetrates the twin coating and dissolves the urea inside which is then released back through the coating according to temperature and moisture.

Another key focus will be on products to assist in a

proactive approach to disease management, as the changes in pesticide legislation continue to have a deepening effect on sports turf quality.

Through the formation of a water-resistant, rainfast coating on the plants surface, Headland’s DewCure has demonstrated considerable success in reducing surface moisture.

With the activity of damaging foliar diseases like Microdochium nivale and Dollar Spot positively linked with conditions conducive to high leaf moisture, utilising DewCure to control dew and guttation fluid can help to suppress disease activity.

INFINICUT to showcase new SM34 Rotary Mower

Visitors to stand H075 at SALTEX will be some of the first to see the brand new SM34 Rotary Mower from INFINICUT.

Swiftly settling into the INFINICUT stable alongside the renowned range of fixed and floating head cylinder mowers, the SM34 has set a new industry standard for rotary cut quality. There will also be the opportunity to learn all about the new machine in the Eco Village demonstration area.

Offering best in class performance with an emphasis on a modern, clean power source, the SM34 can be used to mow in the traditional sense or, alternatively, it can operate as a stand-alone vacuum.

It takes its mode of traction from the INFINICUT reel mower, paired with a deck constructed using MTD’s state-of-the-art stamp tooling equipment and years of rotary experience. The result is a technologically advanced unit that exceeds all necessary safety compliance that is demanded of rotary decks.

Incorporating both a front roller and rear traction roller means the SM34 delivers a striping effect usually only achieved with a professional reel mower, no matter the turf conditions.

In line with the rest of the INFINICUT fleet, it offers the operator a number of parameters which can be tailored to their particular requirements, including paralleling and deck pitch adjustment features as standard. It is also user programmable via the proprietary Android or iOS InfiniApp. The new Rotary mower is a natural progression from the renowned cylinder mower range which will also be on show. Available in a variety of working widths from 22” to 34”, the INFINICUT FX and FL have become well-known for industry leading cut quality, striping and quiet operation thanks to the lithium battery power source.

The environmental credentials of the range sees INFINICUT demonstrating in the new SALTEX Eco Village at 11:00am and 2:00pm on both Wednesday 30th and Thursday 31st.

Bigger presence for Price Turfcare with Ventrac and Ryan

Price Turfcare, the UK and Ireland distributor of the Ventrac multi-implement compact tractor and Ryan turf maintenance equipment, is returning to SALTEX with a larger stand and more products on display.

Founded by Ransomes Jacobsen’s former sales director, Rupert Price, in January 2017, the company has come a long way in less than three years.

“We’ve had a fantastic journey in a short space of time”, he said. “It’s been very hectic with demonstrations, roadshows and exhibitions to get the products in front of people and it has certainly produced excellent sales for the business. We have increased sales, year-on-year, with most Ventrac’s being sold with multiple attachments.

“One significant sale this year was to a well-known utility company in the north of England, who purchased five Ventrac mowers with Finishing decks and then, within a month, returned to purchase a sixth machine – this time with a Tough Cut deck.

Private estates are another key business area for us and we have made significant sales involving multiple implement purchases. Customers really appreciate the versatility of Ventrac.”

Intelligent Marking ready to reveal the enhanced Intelligent One

Intelligent Marking is ready to showcase its advanced robotic line marker and PROSTRIPE line of field paint to the sports turf industry on stand CO10 and at the Live Demonstration area.

The Intelligent One (IO) has led the field in accuracy, reliability and ease of use since being released in 2016 and was awarded the SALTEX Innovation Award in 2017 when it was first presented to the UK market. Since then it has seen further advancements to its GPS system and software to maintain its industry leading specification.

The PROSTRIPE field paint has been carefully formulated to

match the requirements of every type of customer, including Premier League venues. It is currently being used to great effect by our American customers, including grass-root clubs, professional sports teams and universities. It comes as a ready-to-spray (RTS) paint in three variations: permanent grass paint, semi-permanent for artificial grass and easily removeable chalk-based paint.

Each variant comes in white, blue, yellow and red as standard, with other bespoke colours on request.

BLEC Turf-Seeder takes centre-stage

Known for its reliable method of seeding, the Turf-Seeder will be a particular highlight on the BLEC stand at this year’s SALTEX.

Alongside other machines from the specialised landscaping and turfcare range, visitors to stand M080 can also find out about the recently launched 4m BLECavator.

The Turf-Seeder is renowned for utilising one of the most proven methods of seed incorporation. The front notched ring rollers crush lumps, level the soil and create small pockets in the ground ready to accept the grass seed.

Offering accurate and adjustable rates of between 5-50gms/m 2 , the seeds are then distributed the full width of the worked area and are incorporated evenly into the top 12mm of the surface. The rear set of rollers then split the shallow ridges formed by the front rollers to maximise germination - while keeping surface disturbance to a minimum.

The Turf-Seeder is available in 3 different working widths – 1.8m, 2.1m and 2.4m – the largest of

which is ideal for contractors and large-area seeding. It’s 300 litre hopper capacity and ability to seed up to 7 acres per hour sees it a popular choice for use on turf farms.

Also suited to the demands of turf growers is the new BLECavator 400HD, the latest addition to the heavy-duty stoneburier range. The BLECavator features large diameter tines to screen and bury stones, debris and overgrowth.

The adjustable spacing and optional vibrating screen makes it suitable for use in most weather conditions and on a variety of surfaces, including heavy and damp soil. As with the rest of the range, the new 400HD features an adjustable levelling blade for accurate grading, and a rear packer roller, ballastable with water, for firming up the surface. Engineered by Redexim, the new BLECavator delivers strength and durability.

The team will be on hand to discuss and answer any questions on the new BLECavator, along with the complete pedestrian and tractor mounted BLEC portfolio.

ICL to launch two new innovative herbicides

ICL provides a wide variety of products for turf, landscape and industrial areas.

Visitors to stand K030 will be able to find out more about Lockstar, a new residual, preemergent herbicide that controls a broad spectrum of weeds.

Elsewhere on the SALTEX show floor, ICL’s International Technical Manager Andy Owen will be leading a seminar entitled Managing Parasitic Nematodes with Seaweed. Commencing on the second day of SALTEX in Learning LIVE Theatre Two at 12:40pm Andy will be providing an insight into ICL’s

unique four-year research project which is exploring the effects of seaweed products on turfgrass plant parasitic nematodes.

The project, which is taking place at Royal Holloway, University of London, was founded due to the apparent rise of nematodes.

As it stands, there are few options available for the turf manager who has a nematode problem but ICL is currently researching whether seaweed could offer a solution. Andy, who will be joined by PhD student Tamsin Williams, is of the opinion that when the right seaweed is applied to a grass plant it could change the resistance of the

plant to disease and insect attack and both Andy and Tamsin will be revealing their current findings.

The ICL stand will feature a coffee barista and free drinks will be available throughout the

A real breakthrough for landscaping and contracting groundscare businesses requiring compost and woodchip screening on the move, the screener can be legally towed behind a typical 4x4 pick-up, or similar vehicle, with a 3.5 tonne capacity. It can be built to be trailer loaded, or it can be trailed with its own axle and draw bar.

The innovative design offers the option of standard legs, where it can be easily moved by a fork-lift, or the screener can be supplied with hydraulic legs.

The Ecogreen screener offers a simple, reliable and economic solution to a wide range of requirements, with a quick release screening drum and choice of meshes.

The aggressive drum ensures fast, efficient operation with low running cost per tonne. The machine is easily driven by the PTO of a small compact tractor and it’s also available with diesel or electric drive.

The hopper comes with a steel feed conveyor, so there is no need for the continual adjustment required with a rubber belt. The screener is compact for easy access into confined spaces, robust in construction, and suitable for one-man operation.

Elevators are available for trommel fines removal after screening and separation and there is an optional brush for wet material.

The Ecogreen screener can be easily incorporated into a bunker system and designed to individual specification if required.

King Feeders will be offering special 0% finance deals at Saltex and for the first six months

of sales, subject to status, with a 50% deposit then nothing to pay for 2-years and no interest on the payment balance.

King Feeders have over fifty years in the machinery industry, with twenty-three years in green waste products.

The company provides national service and support.

A number of other Ecogreen machines in the range will be on display on Stand H085.

Join Rigby Taylor in its centenary anniversary celebrations

As Rigby Taylor celebrates its 100th anniversary, the company’s SALTEX stand (number G060) is one not to miss as it once again showcases a comprehensive range of innovative products and services, including:

• Next generation robotic line marking – also being shown in action on the outside demonstration area

• Low invasive drainage

All will be showcased and explained using touch screen technology by the company’s technical specialists, and a free cup of coffee awaits every visitor!

Wiedenmann UK brings supersize to SALTEX

The 2.1 m Terra Spike XD8 deep aerator combines speed with a working depth up to 27.5 cm.

It brings a host of class leading H&S initiatives, like shock absorbing and anti-vibration mechanisms. Favoured by contractors for its size, it remains incredibly neat and smooth.

Even wider is the 3.5 m bat wing Terra Rake for scarifying, thatch removal and soil conditioning. Twice as big as the ever popular 1.7 m rake, it doubles output and width instantly while keeping labour costs down. Thanks to a clever frame operated hydraulically from the cab, it folds easily to a transportable size.

Then there’s the aptly named Super 500 which scarifies, fraise

mows, flail mows, verticuts, sweeps and collects into a generous 2500 litre tank. It’s got Wiedenmann versatility written all over as it’s happy to work at heights up to 2.1 m and beavers away even in frosty conditions, vacuum packing its load.

Making a special appearance on A080 is sister product, the Groundpro Maredo MT200 series, and in particular the flex verticutter. While not supersize, it is definitely superfast.

Controlling thatch in the top layer is key; too much organic matter can be a problem. This removes thatch cleanly at good speed. Three independent floating heads and an ‘A’ frame with pivot point make turning simple, and importantly, every working second count.

Pellenc to launch four new products

Pellenc UK has chosen SALTEX 2019 to launch four new batterypowered hand tools on their new stand location C085.

Full details are being kept under wraps until the show opens on 30th October at the NEC Birmingham, but visitors will be excited to hear that a new pedestrian mower and ULiB will be two of the new products to join the portfolio.

A forerunner when it comes to lithium-ion technology and high efficiency ‘brushless’ motors, Pellenc has established itself as the number one choice in the ‘zero emission’ professional power tools market for the maintenance of urban and green-spaces.

The combination of these two technologies makes it possible to eliminate direct emission of greenhouse gases and significantly reduce noise and vibration.

It meets the users’ requirements for comfort and sustainability while offering excellent cost efficiency.

Other products on the stand will include the new Pellenc Alpha range of professional ‘On-Boardbattery tools.

The Pellenc Alpha range sees two new batteries (P260 and P520) which can be directly fitted to the tools or fitted to a new harness.

Also available to view will be the Airion 3 new generation hand-held blower, Rasion pedestrian rotary mower, Helion hedgecutter, Selion chainsaws and polesaws and the Prunion and Vinion pruning shears.

The company’s experienced and knowledgeable staff will also be on hand to offer valuable advice, along with finance options, and all visitors to the stand will be

able to get their hands on the new product brochures.

All Pellenc batteries and tools come complete with a three-year commercial warranty as standard – the first manufacturer to offer this on battery-powered tools.

Pellenc is exclusively distributed in the UK and Ireland by Etesia UK.

SISIS all set for NEC

Long-term SALTEX exhibitor SISIS will be bringing their expertise and a selection of their renowned product range to this year’s show.

For over 80 years SISIS has been designing and manufacturing a range of professional groundcare equipment which is ideal for the maintenance of sports and amenity turf and artificial playing surfaces.

Synonymous with exceptionally dependable, durable equipment, visitors to the SISIS stand (E070) will get the opportunity to see how the products could make a significant difference to their maintenance operations.

The SISIS range of pedestrian scarifiers come highly recommended by those responsible for the maintenance of sports turf, and two of these products will be featured on the

stand – the Rotorake 600HD and the Auto Rotorake MK5.

With a range of interchangeable reels consisting of thatch removal, thatch control and a range of brush reels, the Auto Rotorake MK5 can be used for several different tasks including scarifying, verticutting and brushing.

From the same range, the Rotorake 600HD is a heavy duty pedestrian scarifier and linear aerator. This versatile machine is equally at home when used for regular routine use at a shallow setting or a deeper setting when required.

It also contributes to aeration and compaction relief by cutting clean, continuous slits to assist water and air absorption.

For further scarifying requirements, SALTEX visitors

will be pleased to see the new SISIS Veemo HD.

This tractor mounted heavy duty scarifier provides increased hydraulic power, an easier connection to the tractor to save time, and new twin oil coolers which will improve the cooling process in hot climates.

Ultimately, these upgrades will provide more power to cutting heads, enabling the blades to go deeper, whilst maintaining a fast work rate.

Aeration is vital to the health of sports turf and the tractor mounted SISIS Multitiner (available in 1.8m and 1.2m working widths) will significantly help to reduce turf compaction, thatch build-up and boost the overall health of the turf.

Award sponsor SCH showcases diverse range of products

For the second consecutive year, SCH (Supplies) Ltd will be sponsoring the IOG Best Managed Artificial Surface Industry Award instead of keeping stand space.

The choice to sponsor again follows the success of last year’s Industry Awards and is especially appealing as it allows key members of staff to stay on site; ensuring products continue to reach customers without delay.

The choice of award was easy to make as SCH manufacture a large range of artificial maintenance equipment for sports venues of all sizes and budgets. This year’s most popular artificial surface products have been the DCR Decompaction Rake and HSTS98 Artificial Surface Towed Sweeper.

The DCR Decompaction Rake and optional DCRCA Chemical

Applicator are designed to apply chemicals to long-fi bre synthetic sports surfaces, most commonly 3G.

The chemical is applied by a dribble/drip bar mounted in front of a row of spring-coiled scarifying tines. The autumn and winter months are ideal for the Artificial Surface Towed Sweeper (Ref: HSTS98), as debris on outdoor courts can quickly deteriorate playing conditions.

When the unit is towed, the high-grip polymer wheels turn solid metal drive gears, transmitting rotational energy to the units 4 rows of brushes.

Wildflower, winter mixtures and your chance to be a winner with DLF

Sports, lawn and wildflower seed will all be under the spotlight as DLF Seeds return to SALTEX.

The technical team will be on hand to provide mixture advice across the Johnsons Sports Seed and Masterline ranges, but also, visitors to stand J100 will have the chance to win innovative tools for effective on-the-spot overseeding, worth over £600!

With sustainability and ecology still very much on the agenda for golf courses and those managing green spaces, the DLF Pro Flora wildflower range has been extended with the addition of 3 Colour Boost mixtures.

Designed to deliver maximum colour, diversity and interest, the Colour Boost collection incorporates native wildflowers and garden flowering species to deliver

a dazzling floral display throughout the year, whilst providing welcome food and shelter for a variety of wildlife.

With winter approaching, the importance of regular overseeding cannot be overemphasised – essential for sward development, overseeding improves turf quality and can reduce maintenance costs over the long term. DLF’s new turf type tetraploids are ideal for winter overseeding, bred for rapid germination and establishment even under low soil temperatures.

These 4Turf tetraploids develop a stronger and deeper rooting system which also improves the efficiency in which nutrients, including Nitrogen, are utilised.

Incorporated into Johnsons Sports Seed mixtures including J 4Turf and J Rescue Stadia,

the qualities of 4Turf make it suitable for autumn/winter programmes for football, rugby, golf tees, polo and racecourses.

To help make the overseeding process more efficient and effective, DLF have teamed up with ForthRoots to give visitors to SALTEX the chance to win both the new RyeSeeder and MultiTool.

For precision overseeding, the RyeSeeder features interchangeable tine options that are designed to fit perfectly into the scars left following matches or training, to create the perfect bed for placement of recovery seeding.

With double the tines, the ForthRoots MultiTool is ideal for larger areas - eliminating the need for tractor mounted-overseeding during the playing season.

Agria UK is a new sister company to Wiedenmann UK and introduces two unique hybrid remote-controlled rotary mulching mowers at SALTEX.

Agria was established near Stuttgart over 70 years ago. Originally for agriculture, it changed paths to cover soil cultivation, green space maintenance and pavement cleaning. Still prominent in these sectors, their German engineering has gained them a worldwide reputation for handheld multipurpose machines. Now their hybrid bank mowers are an exciting development and will be the specific focus for Agria UK.

Both Agria machines offer Hybrid-Drive-Concept, making them more efficient and environmentally friendly than hydraulic concepts.

The agria 9600, with its low centre of gravity and rubber tracks, powers safely through heavy duty work on steep slopes to 50°. In two widths, 112 cm and 80 cm, it cuts and mulches in two directions and is effortless on a variety of applications, including fine turf.

The agria 9500 is a remote controlled compact mower which performs to a very capable 45°. With brushless motors and electromechanical braking it takes manoeuvrability to a new level. Zero turn, it has a working width of 70 cm and takes problem areas in its stride.

David Rae, managing director of both Agria UK and Wiedenmann UK said: “Remote controlled units lead the way for safe technology. These new units are perfect for purpose. Build quality and ease of use are exceptional. They help future proof the industry.

“We’ll be at Turf Maintenance Live! on Oct 22 & 23, at St Albans, then the following week will launch at the NEC for Saltex, Stand D097.”

Agria UK will operate through a network of stocking dealers across the UK and Ireland supported by Jason Bristow, Chas Ayres, Michael James and Andy Kerr.

Ransomes Jacobsen to showcase revised Highway 3

Ransomes Jacobsen will be showcasing the revised model of the Highway 3 triple cylinder mower on stand H090 at SALTEX 2019.

The lightweight mower is popular in the commercial market and is well known for its high work rate, slope stability and manoeuvrability. To increase the mower’s already impressive output, drive train improvements have been made to boost the overall efficiency and compliment the Euro Stage V compliance.

The new drivetrain is central to the increased work rate and Ransomes Jacobsen director of international product development, Richard Comely is looking forward to exhibiting the machine at the Birmingham NEC.

He said: “SALTEX is a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase new products, network with customers and keep our fingers on the pulse of the sectors we sell into. Triplex cylinder mowers are still one of the most flexible and productive vehicles to cut grass with, and we will be showing a revised, Euro Stage V, Ransomes Highway 3 with a more efficient drivetrain at the exhibition.

“The Highway 3 is typically used on large areas for extended periods of time, so productivity is an important aspect of the mower. It was a case of improving something that was already performing very well, but the new drivetrain has made a difference and we’re very pleased with the outcome.”

Other machines on stand H090 will include the TR320 triplex mower, HR300 outfront mower, Cushman utility vehicle and the HM600 widearea mulching flail mower. The latter utilises flail units which have been developed in a close collaboration between Ransomes and Müthing, an industry leader in innovative and trusted flail technology.

Ransomes Product Manager Lee Kristensen commented: “The partnership developed a highly productive and reliable mower that is capable of working in a wide range of conditions. The result has been a flail that matches the power output of the HM600 tractor, allowing users to cut down dense grass leaving an evenly spread after-cut finish every time.”

The HM600’s cutting capabilities come from the ‘M’ type carbide flails and ‘shark fin’ shredding bar. The floating cutting heads follow the contours of the ground while the unique action of the units cuts the grass multiple times as it travels around the flail head and mulches the grass while it breaks down before evenly spreading the clippings.

Heavy duty rollers complete the fine turf finish. A temperature controlled reversing fan ensures the air intake screen is clear for optimum engine cooling and continuous function.

Continued sales success sees MTS Plant increase territory

across the central belt (Glasgow/ Edinburgh) and the borders.

This further expands the company’s existing territory, which covers Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cheshire.

David Cockayne, UK & Ireland Sales Manager at Yanmar CEE, commented: “Since appointing MTS Plant to our UK and Ireland dealer network, the company has continued to achieve outstanding results.

Cirencester Park Polo Club is one of the oldest and possibly the most famous Polo grounds in Europe. Cirencester has played host to members of royal families from across the world and celebrities from all walks of life.

It boasts ten match grounds spread over two sites with matches played most days between May and October.

This means that the contract ground-keeper, Phil Cole and his team from Cotswold Turf Care, have their work cut-out in ensuring that all the match grounds are prepared and maintained in perfect condition.

“We use a MAJOR 7.3m Swift trailed unit for all our grass cutting. It’s about the largest make available that can be safely transported on the road.

Because it’s so wide in working mode and so easy to set the working height it can cover a lot more ground, more quickly than before.

“With its front and rear rollers, it enables us to ensure we leave a level and striped finish at precisely the right height of cut, every time.”

Cotswold Turf Care Ltd manage not only polo grounds, but commercial properties that include schools, football and rugby pitches and the prestigious Badminton Horse Trials. “We cut six thousand plus acres a year,” added Phil.

“We have a small team, so time pressure, cost and quality along with a reliable mower is essential for the job.”

“The maintenance is simple with just a few grease nipples.

There are no belts and just a strong, heavy-duty driveline with a shear-bolt in the PTO drive.

“There’s really nothing to go wrong and it never complains even if we are cutting heavy crops of wet grass,” continued Phil. “The blades do a great job of chopping the clippings and spreading them evenly. It never leaves a windrow.”

Both the players and the spectators have commented on how good the grounds look. “At a recent board meeting, even the committee members commented very favourably about our grass cutting and the playing surface,” said Phil.

“We will only use the best machinery for our customers, and this feedback is confi rmation that we are doing the right thing,” he concluded.

A mower with goose poo clearance too

Throughout the Chesham Town Council district there are a large number of highly manicured grassed areas that need dedicated upkeep.

Having previously used pedestrian mowers with collector boxes, Paul Isom the Parks and Premises Manager, decided they needed to become more efficient.

After speaking with their local dealer P A Turney and following numerous demonstrations they were bowled over by the ISEKI SXG326.

“The SXG326 ride on mower collected with the same striped finish as the pedestrian mower with the added benefit of completing it in a fraction of the time. Its powerful 21hp engine means the mower easily tackles varied terrain whilst completing the jobs quickly with its generous 54” width of cut.

“The large 600litre hopper saves us valuable hours by limiting the amount of times you need to stop mowing in order to empty the collector.

“Collection of autumn leaves by the SXG326 has been a god send, we are all relieved we no longer have to do all the tiresome work of raking. We couldn’t believe how well the collector picks these up, especially when it’s been raining and everything is sodden and heavy.

“Wildflower meadow areas have increased in parks in recent years which does cut down the cutting cycles required throughout the year but the final cut and collect at the end of each Summer can be hard work. We however set the SXG326 on the highest height of cut and it mows it all down and collects with no issues, that’s when you realise how effective this piece of kit really is!

all this and what really surprised us was how brilliant it was at collecting up all the goose poo around the parks,

Husqvarna launches Automower fairway kit

Husqvarna has introduced a new robotic mower fairway kit designed to be used on golf fairways and other sports turf applications.

The new kit lowers the cutting height of Husqvarna Automower to a minimum of approximately 10mm whilst also providing new cutting height steps of 12.5mm, 15mm and 17.5mm. The standard cutting height on all Husqvarna Automower models excluding the AWD models is 20mm.

The kit ensures that the lower cutting heights required on areas such as fairways can be achieved using a Husqvarna robotic mower.

The combination of Husqvarna Automower and the new kit allows areas such as fairways to be maintained at a constant

length throughout the year, creating consistency in the playing conditions experienced by golfers.

The ultra-silent mowers are also extremely unobtrusive, ensuring that players are not disturbed and also allow night time operation.

The use of robotic mowers on large and labour intensive areas of grass which require regular maintenance also allows the redeployment of grounds staff on to more skilled tasks.

The robotic mowers are designed to cut little and often, recycling the micro-clippings back into the soil improving grass quality whilst maintaining a consistent grass length throughout the growing season.

this is such an unexpected but now invaluable bonus!

Top performance with STIHL’S enhanced chainsaws

STIHL has launched two enhanced versions of the MS 151, increasing its range of high-quality chainsaws for professional use.

The new MS 151 C-E and MS 151 TC-E top handle chainsaws have both been designed with high performance in mind.

Both models feature a new version of STIHL’s 2-MIX engine, which increases the power of the saw by up to 10% and provides a 15% increase in torque when compared to its predecessor, the MS 150 C-E. Additionally, fuel consumption and emissions have also been reduced.

Design upgrades made to the 2-MIX engine include a new piston with stepped base, cylinder and muffler.

The chainsaws also feature ErgoStart technology that enables effortless, reliable starting of the power tools, meaning professionals can be up and running in no time.

The MS 151 C-E can be used for a range of applications, including firewood cutting, tree care and minor thinning, while the MS 151 TC-E top

handle is designed for arborists performing deadwood removal and treetop reductions.

Despite the increase in performance, both chainsaws remain the same weight as the MS 150 C-E at just 2.60kg, ensuring professionals can benefit from the enhanced engine power, whilst keeping the overall system weight to a minimum. STIHL’s anti-vibration system also ensures the tool is comfortable to use over extended periods of time.

The MS 151 C-E and MS 151 TC-E are available now.

Commonwealth Games springboard for future fencing gold

A champion Olympic fencer is champing at the bit for the opportunities afforded by the 2022 Commonwealth Games coming to Birmingham in three years.

High security fencing manufacturer Zaun Ltd supplied 23km of permanent fencing for various stadia at the London 2012 Olympics.

And Zaun then secured the Athletes Village, Chris Hoy Velodrome, Celtic Park, Hampden Park, Troyglen, Kelvin Grove Lawn Bowls and the SECC at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Small wonder therefore that they are so excited about the Games coming to the Midlands next time out. Owner, director and co-founder Alastair Henman says: “The feedback we got from the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee, Police Scotland and the Home Office was very positive, and all were pleased with the security at the Games.

“So, we are hoping to capitalise on that, our London Olympics experience and a host of keynote political summits to secure more major events in the future.”

Zaun developed its PAS 68 MultiFence especially to resist hostile vehicle and mob attacks at the London 2012 Olympics. The UK Intellectual Property Office has since granted Zaun a patent for it.

Zaun is actively pursuing opportunities with the 2022 Commonwealth Games and continues to look to a packed programme of world sporting spectaculars and major political and state occasions to provide its integrated high-security perimeter event overlay services.
