Parks protected in perpetuity to support active communities
Four UK parks are set to benefit from £100,000 of investment which will encourage local people to get active in their local park.
Capital grants from The London Marathon Charitable Trust have been awarded through the Active Spaces programme delivered in partnership with Fields in Trust.
The four recipients of a capital award of £25,000 each are People’s Park in Ballymena, Mid and East Antrim; Halewood Park in Knowsley, Merseyside; West Pilton Park in Edinburgh and Gelligaled Park in Rhonda Cynon Taf. Each award will enhance a vibrant green space to encourage good health and physical activity.
Well-designed and wellmaintained, accessible green space can have a positive impact on public health. Recent research by Fields in Trust demonstrates the significant health and wellbeing benefits for those who visit parks and green spaces regularly. An estimated £111M per year is saved by the NHS immediately, just from prevented GP visits alone. Encouraging
those who do not currently use parks regularly to do so could save further health expenditure.
Learning from these insights, the Active Spaces programme is supporting physical activity projects to inspire the most inactive communities to get active and use their local outdoor spaces. The programme also offers each site £5,000 to help initiate community participation in sports and physical activities on local parks and green spaces across the UK. Four £25,000 capital grants, one in each home nation, will also allow substantial improvements to parks and green spaces which have been protected.
Active Spaces is the first UKwide funding programme from The London Marathon Charitable Trust which makes grants to projects that encourage people to get active. The funding comes from the surplus generated by the iconic mass participation events organised by London Marathon Events Ltd.
Chief Executive of Fields in Trust, Helen Griffiths, said:
parks and green spaces contribute to health and wellbeing; people enjoy greater life satisfaction including both improved physical and mental health, directly as a result of regularly using parks and green spaces. We congratulate each of the recipients on their award which will contribute to happier and healthier local communities able to enjoy their parks in perpetuity.”

• People’s Park in Ballymena, Mid and East Antrim will improve already popular walking trails within the park and create a trim trail, with the addition of outdoor fitness equipment, manufactured from natural timber, to ensure Peoples Park retains its scenic environment along the paths and trails amongst the most beautiful areas of the park.
• West Pilton Park: Edinburgh City Council will be installing an
outdoor gym in this park to the north of the Scottish capital. The new gym will provide a focus for physical activity in the park enabling groups to meet for exercise in their own time and at no cost.
Gelligaled Park: Rhonda Cynon Taf County Borough Council in South Wales are undertaking extensive park improvements to encourage greater informal sport and active recreation including a ‘Learn and Burn’ trail; walking/ running routes; bike trails;
a family fun area and a wellness zone.
• Halewood Park: Knowsley Council on Merseyside are initiating a total redevelopment of this well-used park including new cycle/walking/ exercise route, seating, safe woodland areas and diversifying wildlife habitats and creating an accessible entrance way. The project will enhance a vibrant green space which will encourage good health and physical activity.
GreenMech launch next-gen SURETrak System Learning LIVE educational sessions set for SALTEX 2018
GreenMech has used APF 2018 to launch their next generation SURETrak System (Patent Pending).
Ever since its introduction in 2002, the SAFE-Trak19-28 woodchipper has become an indispensable tool for operators traversing embankments or working on uneven ground. And 2018 will see further improvements to its stability and performance, thereby broadening the 19-28’s usage profile.
For occasions where operators encounter either uncomfortable ground undulations, or where levels differ significantly between the two tracks, GreenMech’s new SURE-Trak System option for the SAFE-Trak 19-28 ensures that both challenges can be safely overcome. The independent
pivoting track assemblies allow each track to maintain contact with the ground while following the contours, to provide a surer footprint and improved stability.
Furthermore, the patent-pending pivoting track System allows safe traversing of even steeper slopes in excess of 35 degrees. Its assistance in keeping the body
of the machine level also protects the engine by keeping it within its approved manufacturer tilt levels.
The SURE-Trak System provides the extra level of adjustment above normal tolerance, to ensure the safety of the operator, crew and machine in the most challenging of conditions.

SALTEX event organisers have revealed details about this year’s all-encompassing education programme – Learning LIVE.
The CPD-accredited seminars are free to attend and registration is now open for all sessions that are due to take place in four purposebuilt seminar theatres on the SALTEX show floor in Halls 6, 7 and 8 at The NEC, Birmingham on 31 October – 01 November.
Last year’s Learning LIVE programme was the biggest one yet and featured more than 100 industry experts who took to the stage to address a variety of topical issues and highlight best practice case studies within the turf care industry – and feedback
gathered from seminar delegates has helped organisers to create an even better line up of speakers and learning opportunities to suit the needs of all SALTEX visitors at this year’s event.

There is more good news this month for the industry as a whole in the form of major investment programmes to safeguard key parks in the UK and encourage more physical activity, particularly amongst the younger generation.
The various schemes are significant as they all recognise the high-quality facilities we already have and the need to ensure they are maintained for future generations. It is vitally important to recognise the value of our industry, from the positive economic impact it has to the world class facilities it provides.
That brings us neatly to this month’s issue, which is dominated by our annual SALTEX preview. This year’s event, taking place at NEC, Birmingham on October 31 and November 1, will provide a fantastic showcase for the industry as a whole. Although SALTEX has traditionally had a strong focus on professional groundscare, a look through this year’s exhibitor list and the seminar programme shows how the wider industry is having a bigger influence. From the BALI Zone and the emphasis on hard landscaping to the presence of new exhibitors, such as Case IH who will be targeting the amenity and public sector visitors, SALTEX has developed into an essential event for the wider industry.
In our special SALTEX 2018 supplement we have a comprehensive preview of what visitors to the NEC can expect this year. As an official media partner, TSP Media and Landscape & Amenity Product Update will once again have its own stand at the exhibition (Stand H080) where you can come and chat with our professional team and pick up the mini footballs that have become our trademark. Elsewhere this month we also look at the ATV, UTV and Work Truck market, Commercial Vehicles and Water Management, all of which are represented at SALTEX 2018 too.

Toro introduces new Grandstand mower
Toro has announced the launch of the new 36” (91cm) and 48” (122cm) Grandstand ® mowers (models 74540TE and 74542TE). Available now, the new stand-on models have several enhanced features and accessories including rear discharge and a recycler kit.
The Toro Grandstand combines the speed and comfort of a zeroturn mower with the benefits of a professional walk-behind. Fast and manoeuvrable, the productive mower ensures the user can cover maximum area in minimal time. The cushioned suspension system, rear discharge deck and twin-levered steering controls also makes mowing easier for the operator.
The Grandstand 36” and 48” both feature a fold-up operator platform to allow the mower to convert to a walk-behind through the simple lowering function. The 36” model also has an
ultra-compact footprint, making the mower ideal for smaller residential properties or areas with gates and tight spaces.
Where traction and handling are concerned, a wide stance and optimal balance enhance hillside stability and control, and the anti-fatigue rubber

This year marks 17 years in business for RT Machinery and the Show was an extra special event to celebrate the granting of a Royal Warrant for the “Supply
and Service of Ground Care Equipment by Appointment to Her Majesty the Queen” on 1st April this year.
A Royal Warrant is a mark of recognition to companies or individuals who have supplied goods or services to the Royal Household for at least five years ... that is The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh or The Prince of Wales.
RT Machinery welcomed The Town Mayor of Aylesbury, Councillor Mark Willis, and the Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire, Sir Henry Aubrey-Fletcher for an official unveiling of the Royal Arms.
In the case of RT Machinery, MD Richard Taylor and his team have been supplying the Royal Household since the company started trading in 2001.
“As a family business, we feel very privileged to have received this prestigious award,” he said. “Serving the Royal Household has always been considered a privilege and a pleasure.
“The award really came as a surprise and it has certainly been a team effort: the expertise and commitment of our staff have been an integral part of our achievement and I’d like to take this opportunityto say thanks for all their hard work.”

Tale of two Dans as student greenkeepers claim prestigious Toro awards
The British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association is proud to announce that Daniel Ashelby of Wilmslow Golf Club has been proclaimed the 30th winner of the Toro Student Greenkeeper of the Year Award.
At the same time, Danny Patten of Lee Park Golf Club, became the third winner of the Toro Young Student Greenkeeper of the Year Award.
Daniel, 25, joins a proud tradition of former awards winners that stretches back to Mark Proctor, who won the very first hosting of the award in 1989 while a student greenkeeper at Portal Golf Club in Cheshire.
The Toro Student Greenkeeper of the Year Awards is a nationwide contest hosted by greenkeepers’ association BIGGA and sponsored by turfcare machinery and irrigation manufacturer Toro alongside its official UK distributor Reesink Turfcare.
Each year, a selection of the best student greenkeepers, selected from regional interviews hosted across the country, descend upon BIGGA House at Aldwark Manor in York for the two-day finals of the event, where they complete a variety of tasks.
A second-generation greenkeeper, whose father was course manager at Gatley Golf Club, Daniel impressed the judges with his knowledge and passion for the profession. The presentation he delivered in front of the awards judges showed his dedication to greenkeeping and his eagerness to do well in his chosen career.
Daniel said: “There was a really strong line-up and I couldn’t tell right until the end who had won because everybody else was fantastic. I’m absolutely delighted and I’d like to thank
Toro, Reesink Turfcare and BIGGA for everything they’ve done this week, it’s amazing.”
As part of his prize, Daniel wins a seven-week scholarship at the University of Massachusetts in the USA, as well as a trip to the GCSAA’s Golf Industry Show in San Diego and a trip to Toro’s headquarters in Minneapolis.
The Toro Young Student Greenkeeper of the Year Award is open to students under the age of 20 and as winner, Danny receives a twoweek work placement at the exclusive Vidauban Golf Club in France, as well as a trip to BTME in Harrogate.
BIGGA Head of Member Learning Stuart Green said: “Congratulations to Daniel and Danny, who showed outstanding passion and commitment, both during the fi nals of the awards and at every stage of the competition, to be crowned worthy winners of this year’s awards.
“To be crowned Toro Student Greenkeeper of the Year isn’t just two days’ hard work; rather you must dedicate yourself to the greenkeeping profession every day of your working life and so both winners and everyone who made it to the fi nals should be incredibly proud of their achievements.
“Each year the finals of the competition get harder to judge, which gives me confi dence that the future of the industry is in very safe hands.”

Greenkeepers Training Committee releases new training materials
The Greenkeepers Training Committee (GTC) has released a revised set of best practice learning materials for all levels of student greenkeepers.
Although originally inspired as the underpinning knowledge for the Level 2 qualification, the GTC Board of Directors and the Employer Group championed the revision of the copyright Learning Materials.
These will be made available not only to learners undertaking the Level 2 Greenkeeping qualification, but will also be available to all golf clubs to be used as best practice.
Prepared by industry specialists and based upon best principles and practices for golf course maintenance and management, the copyright materials are divided into eight chapters, ranging from health and safety, golf course preparation and
maintenance to preparing a tractor with attachments.
The 327-page publication is available to purchase in digital format to anyone through the GTC’s shop for £150. For more information, see www.the-gtc.co.uk/shop/
All GTC Quality Approved Centres will receive a copy of the of Learning Materials, for use with all sports turf students on the various greenkeeping courses.
The GTC is supported by England Golf, Scottish Golf, Wales Golf, The PGA and BIGGA.
Summer turf stress increases chance of Anthracnose
As grass plants have experienced extreme droughts this summer greenkeepers are reminded to act now before disease onset this autumn.
Dr Colin Mumford, Bayer technical manager, explains that stressed turf is more likely to be affected by diseases such as Anthracnose, foliar blight and Anthracnose basal rot.
“Grass swards are struggling to recover following this summer’s extreme weather conditions,
making them more susceptible to disease. If weather conditions are cool and damp going forward you’ll be more likely to see disease outbreaks,” he says.
“Anthracnose is known as a low nitrogen disease so it’s essential to monitor plant nutrition regularly to keep your grass plant in the best condition. You can do this by looking at grass clippings when mowing greens or taking soil or tissue samples and applying correct nutrients if required.
“However, if conducive weather conditions prevail, I’d advise greenkeepers to treat turf preventatively to stop disease from establishing, using a dual action fungicide such as Dedicate (tebuconazole and trifloxystrobin).
“As well as helping to reduce the impact of scarring, treating turf preventatively will minimise the effect of Anthracnose, in turn
leaving you with a healthier grass plant that’s able to withstand other disease stresses like Microdochium Patch,” says Colin.
Following the loss of iprodione, Colin recommends that greenkeepers use an integrated approach to combat disease. This should include both cultural and biological controls as well as fungicides if required.

Wildflower urban biodiversity project makes the grade
A focus on urban biodiversity is at the forefront of an ecologically friendly landscaping project that has recently been completed at Brunel House in Bristol.
Formally offices and now a new Unite Students property, Brunel House in Bristol will house 246 students who will enjoy a landscape that offers an urban habitat for insects, bats, swifts and other wildlife. Key to the central landscaping design of this new development is the incorporation of a wildflower meadow, supplied by Wildflower Turf Ltd at the request of construction specialists the RG Group.
Following the RG Group’s winning submission at the 2017 CIRIA BIG Biodiversity Challenge Awards, award sponsors Wildflower Turf Ltd were contacted by Sustainability Consultant Colorado Goldwyn with a view of utilising the RG Group’s prize to enhance the Brunel House project.
As well as donating 200m² of Wildflower Turf Landscape Turf, the Hampshire-based wildflower experts also assisted the project with specialist consultancy, recommended and
supplied additional turf to meet the project’s requirements, and provided Accredited Partner training to the project team.
Colorado Goldwyn of EQ Consultancy said: “The combination of Wildfl ower Turf Landscape Turf and Species Rich Lawn Turf has pulled the landscaping scheme together beautifully and allowed for a fl ow of biodiversity throughout the differing levels of the landscape design.”
The wildfl ower-led landscaping initiativehasfocussedonassisting rare invertebrates such as the rare Carrot Mining Bee and Small Blue Butterfl y. Additionally, and in collaboration with the RSPB, a number of other recommended ecological initiatives were also defi ned and adopted as part of the landscaping design.
As well as providing an aesthetically pleasing landscape for the incoming student population, local wildlife habitats have been protected, with the project on track to receive an ‘Excellent’ BREEAM rating.

R-VAN fully adjustable rotary nozzles set new performance standards
For highly efficient irrigation of both large and smaller areas in residential and commercial applications, Rain Bird now offers a full range of R-VAN rotary adjustable, full circle and strip nozzles.
Coupled with fast installation and simple maintenance – no tools required - R-VAN nozzles set new standards in performance, with just nine models required for full 45 to 360 degree coverage and ranges from 2.4 to 7.3 metres. This compares to up to fifteen if alternative brands of nozzles were to be specified, keeping investment costs lower from the outset.
All R-VAN nozzles can be quickly hand adjusted for arc
and radius. Simply by pushing down and turning the nozzle cap, the arc can be increased by up to 270 degrees and by turning the radius adjustment dial clockwise, the throw distance is increased without needing to use a separate adjustment tool. With these two actions, areas of any shape can be effectively irrigated.

Four finance schemes with ten ways to buy Toro
Reesink Turfcare’s four Toro finance schemes offering ten ways to pay launched last year and were so successful they’re back again.
The reason for this success is, says Reesink national sales manager Jeff Anguige, because they allow customers to turn one new Toro machine into a fleet for the same year’s budget: “Instead of buying one machine with your annual machinery replacement budget you put it towards a fleet. It’s the cost-effective way to get the latest and best quality machinery you need, now. Plus, you get more of what you need for less.”
All four schemes, which comprises Toro Triple Finance each with three payment options and an interest-free payment with Buy Now Pay Later, have
flexibility at their core, to provide a best scenario for everyone.
Toro Triple Finance is a firm favourite for Reesink Turfcare customers, offering three options, each with several payment plans to suit individual budgets and circumstances. All three options have payment spread over five years, but there are three ways to spread the payment within that timeframe. Choose from monthly or annually, with oneor five-months upfront payment; with a 15 percent payment of the final balance in the final month; or with a six month pause before payment starts with payments condensed into the remaining months or years left for the term.
Buy Now Pay Later is interest free for orders before the end November. For all machinery bought between now and then,
payment is required in full on 7 May 2019.
Jeff continues: “The everincreasing importance of the role of finance in the acquisition of turf machinery is reflected strongly in these finance schemes offering customers plenty of options on how to fill or top-up their shed with the latest
Toro machinery. We believe these finance options makes purchasing Toro equipment easy and affordable for every budget.”
All deals are available now until 30 November 2018 to customers in the UK only and subject to acceptance.

Green-tech supply landscaping materials for distillery visitor centre
The Macallan distillery in Craigellachie, one of the world’s most prestigious malt whisky brands has recently opened the doors of its new £140million distillery and visitor experience to the public. The new distillery and visitor experience is set into the landscape of the 370acre Easter Elchies estate that has been distilling one of the world’s leading single malts since 1824.
As the preferred site for the new distillery was designated by the local planners as an area of Great Landscape Value, the distillery had to be sensitive to its environment, while still allowing Macallan to increase its production to meet the demand of increased sales forecasts.
The Macallan distillery is operated by Edrington, a privately-owned international
spirits company based in Scotland. They had taken the decision to close down its old distillery and create a new one less than 500 metres away, with precise copies of the existing pot stills.
The new complex was designed by architects Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners. They were supported by Landscape Architect, Gillespies, with the landscaping contract being awarded to Highland Landscape Design, who provide landscapedesign and maintenance services across Scotland.

The distillery, near Craigellachie in Moray, has been camouflaged under a vast 14,000 sq. metre wildflower turf green roof, which has been designed to blend in with the surrounding rolling hillside and installed by Sky Garden and Topek Ltd. A proportion of the surrounding land has been planted with 45,000 trees. There were also 330 large standalone trees planted.
Highland Landscape Design is a long-standing client of Greentech and won the prestigious
planting and maintenance contract. They turned to us for the materials needed for the huge planting project, which included over 45,000 60cm and 120cm Tubex Tree Shelters, 45,000 timber stakes and more than 100 rolls of natural hessian tree ties.

Anglo-Portuguese alliance bears fruit for one young greenkeeper
Portuguese national, Henrique Ferreira, has spent just five months at The London Golf Club.
During a break from his studies, at agronomy college in his home country, he has been assisting Golf Courses & Estate Manager, Lee Sayers.
Headland Amenity work closely with his employers, Belas Golf Club, as well as The London Golf Club and were very happy to see this young greenkeeper gain valuable course preparation experience in the UK.
Henrique, a greenkeeper at his home course of Belas GC, came to London in April and his experience of using Headland Amenity products helped him fit right in.
“Lee and the team included me in all of the daily tasks” he explains “from raking bunkers through to cutting all areas. I have also been involved with feeding, working with Headland Multigreen slow release fertiliser.”
“The biggest difference I have found between greenkeeping here and at home is the aeration programme - how frequently it is conducted and how it makes such a big difference to the quality of the course. All in all I have learnt a great deal and have to thank the whole greenkeeping and landscaping team at The London Club, for such a great experience.”

Think SMART and protect your turf
Disease control, its prevention and eradication has always been a key aspect of turf management and for many years powerful fungicide options have been readily available that allowed greenkeepers and groundsman to exert a high level of control.
For many, these products were highly effective, even at times being used as a ‘get out of jail’ free card - but things have changed.
With the removal of key active ingredients, turf disease management will have to focus on prevention rather than cure. Strategies will have to be introduced that involve early identification, local knowledge of the conditions that are conducive to their development
and historical records that could identify where an outbreak may occur. This proactive approach will allow for a preventative fungicide to be applied prior to damage occurring
The majority of turf diseases, once they are visible to the naked
eye, have already caused damage to turf tissue. If fungicides are applied at this stage, they can only limit further spread of the disease; therefore the adoption of a preventative programme is critical to success. Rigby Taylor has produced a free, interactive Fungicide Programme Wall
Calendar with replaceable ‘stickers’, supported by a 12page brochure containing 11 different fungicide programme packages with five different modes of action.
MM keeps standards high at Cheltenham College
Christian Brain, head of grounds at Cheltenham College, believes that Limagrain UK’s range of MM grass seed mixtures have helped him to maintain the high standard of pitches expected by the prestigious school.
Christian relies on both Limagrain’s MM50 and MM60 grass seed mixtures which he uses on the winter pitches, outfields and cricket squares.
“We overseed our winter pitches with MM60 and this is done twice a year,” he says. “Once in August so we are ready for rugby and then we apply again in the spring. We overseed with MM60 after
we’ve scarified the smaller cricket squares during the renovation period – purely because it is a stronger mix and can withstand winter sport.”
Both MM50 and MM60 are boosted by the inclusion of Headstart GOLD. Developed using the latest scientific findings and field experience, Headstart GOLD is a natural revolutionary grass seed treatment that ensures rapid germination and is perfect for enhancing performance on grass seed coatings for sports fields, golf courses, lawns and amenity turf.

Ariens and a winning dealer meeting
Ariens Company gathered all their dealers for Countax, Westwood, Ariens and ECHO a Whittlebury Hall, Northamptonshire on the 12th September for their annual dealer meeting.
The theme of the meeting was ‘Shifting Gears’ and the day was led by Darren Spencer, Vice President for EMEA and Asia, beginning with talks on the new products available early in 2019.
These included the Ariens Zenith, the largest zero turn in the portfolio, aimed at the commercial market. The new Countax C40 and Westwood T40 garden tractors were also launched along with an interchangeable cassette system attachment which allows customers to scarify and sweep their garden and grounds.
The new range of ECHO Lithium Ion 58V outdoor power tools was also on display for dealers to try including chainsaws, brushcutters, hedgetrimmers and an innovative walk behind 21” lawn mower.
The new product introductions are in keeping with Ariens Company’s policy of ‘continuous improvement’
Renovations are plain sailing for Sportsfields
Sportsfields Ltd has added a new Koro FIELDTOPMAKER with Terraplane Rotor to their fleet as they continue to adopt the industry’s most innovative technology.
To match the needs of the company’s client list of professional and amateur clubs, schools, colleges, local authorities and specifying architects Geoff once again turned to Campey Turf Care Systems and the new Koro FTM.
Using the Terraplane Rotor is the most efficient to subtract poa from the surface with the carbide tipped blades ensuring all organic build-up is removed, leaving a clean and level surface.
The new angled cross conveyor has been introduced to move
material evenly with perfect belt tracking with front and rear roller blades contributing to the cleanest pass available on the market.
The weight and balance have been analysed resulting in a lighter, steadier machine with the redistribution of weight using a removable 100kgs meaning a
much smaller tractor can be used to run the Koro FTM. This is because the centre of gravity has been shifted towards the tractor making it easier to lift. Even when the weight is removed the machine still has improved balance against previous models.

ACO unveils latest addition to StormBrixx system
ACO has announced a new addition to its popular StormBrixx stormwater attenuation and infiltration range that broadens the scope of installation applications. Designed for surface water infiltration and storage, the versatility of the StormBrixx system means it can be used across all construction environments as a standalone solution, or as part of an integrated sustainable urban drainage (SuDS) scheme.
The latest addition – ACO StormBrixx SD (Standard Duty) range – represents a general-purpose extension to the high-capacity patented plastic geocellular system, comprising of a 914mm high injectionmoulded stackable crate design suitable for use in a wide range of construction applications.
While the StormBrixx HD (Heavy Duty) offers the ideal solution for Local Authority projects due to the option for integrated man access units, which facilitates the rigorous maintenance requirements mandated by SuDS approval boards and water companies; the new SD is the ideal cost-effective storage and infiltration solution for nongovernment funded work.
StormBrixx SD has a depth to invert of 4.5m and is available with integrated access plates to allow easy maintenance. The range is perfect for a variety of
private sector integrated drainage systems with less restrictive specifications, including schools, housebuilding projects, supermarkets and carparks. The SD system offers a high void ratio of 97% – one of the highest available on the market –which can limit the volume of excavation required to achieve a specified storage capacity. This helps to reduce both installation time and cost.
The SD range incorporates many of the benefits of the original HD StormBrixx attenuation system which drove the product to become one of the most popular on the market. Given the system’s stackable structure, up to 347m3 can be loaded onto a single HGV – significantly reducing both the number of vehicles required, and consequentially, the carbon emissions for each project. Manufactured from fully recyclable polypropylene, the brick bonded and cross bonding structure ensures it is one of the strongest systems available.
Additional accessories available include inspection point and pipe connectors and for added ease of maintenance, the system can be configured to minimise silt accumulation. The SD range also benefits from a low flow and drain down facility, to ensure the system can be properly maintained throughout its life.
Reduce costly manual labour practices around water courses
Management around water courses and water treatment plants can be arduous.
Knowing how to sensitively manage vegetation growth in these areas, in which delicate ecosystems exist, might seem challenging.
Ensuring whatever method is used does not contaminate the water is a priority. These parameters often mean that methods used to control unwanted vegetation tend to be time intensive manual methods such as hand weeding, which can be costly and inefficient.
Foamstream is a safe and cost-effective hot-foam ecosolution which is being used
by contractors and utility companies around the UK, Europe and North America to help treat moss and algae around treatment plants, including on the filter beds themselves as
Polypipe enhances highways offering with introduction of Ridgichute
Polypipe has launched Ridgichute - a new gully chute designed for use in highway applications.
With the UK expected to experience heavier rainfall, it is essential that stormwater doesn’t collect on either new or existing road networks, as this can cause traffic congestion and road blockages.
Ridgichute allows captured water and sediment from highrisk carriageways to pass straight through into a Ridgidrain drainage system, preventing surface flooding.
The sumpless design reduces the risk to roadside workers needing to undertake gully maintenance by preventing blockages caused by silt accumulation. Captured water, silt

Effective drainage is ‘paramount’ to pitch perfect performance
With the UK’s leading sporting associations continuing to invest heavily in 3G astroturf sports pitches, Aggregate Industries is reminding contractors that effective drainage has never been more important to the successful design and management of these all-weather surfaces.
Traditionally, 3G surfaces consist of three layers; the top pile of artificial grass blades is supported by an infill rubber crumb and a thin layer of sand.
According to Aggregate Industries, essential to a superior drainage system is the use of silica sand infills such as ProPitch Elite, an innovative solution made from larger rounded particles in order to provide superior void space, making it ideal for synthetic
sportspitchesexposedtoextreme weather conditions.
Reducing the risk of fl ooding, independent tests have proven ProPitch Elite to have the best drainage rates available to the UK market, draining a record 116% better than the most popular competitor sand.
This means it is particularly suited to not only 3G surfaces, but also tennis courts, hockey pitches and bowling greens, which require shorter pile carpets where the sands layer is crucial in offering stability to the carpet fi bres as well as draining fast enough to guarantee there is no standing water during a game.

Council looks to Rigby Taylor’s instant play drainage to solve pitch problems
A revolutionary vertical drainage system is set to assist with reducing Wandsworth Council’s perennial misery of cancelled football games due to waterlogged playing surfaces on its Wandsworth Common pitches.
The non-obtrusive Groundwater Dynamics’ system – based on the use of vertical plastic pipes (EGRP) which draw in excess water horizontally – is being trialled on three of most troublesome of the council’s seven winter pitches and, depending on their success, the system could be extended across more of the 96 winter pitches that are under the borough’s care.
The system – which is suitable for all soil types and is in use on a number of sports surfaces, including at Edgbaston Cricket Club – was installed on the Wandsworth Common pitches by drilling a series of bore holes in a grid pattern across the playing surfaces. Central rows of 3 m deep holes (of 89 mm diameter) are flanked by 1.5 m deep holes of 62 mm diameter, at 1.5 m spacings. The sequence was repeated at every 5 m along the length of each pitch. There
are also adjacent bores to depths of 6 m and 12 m. Each borehole accommodates an Energypassive Ground water Recharge Pump (EGRP) pipe, the top of which sits 300 mm below the surface. The hole is then simply ‘plugged’ and top-dressed.
The innovative five-chamber EGRP design with its mild vacuum draws in water horizontally (to the deeper, 89 mm diameter EGRP pipe) and this then drains away into the lower unsaturated strata/water table.

The power of deep aeration on video
The concept of one metre deep aeration, to relieve compaction and improve drainage, really needs to be seen in action to appreciate the long-term benefits.
A long and very hot summer with little rain will, without doubt, lead to compaction and drainage problems on the sports pitch, the golf course and bowling green and inevitably in amenity areas and gardens.
Terrain Aeration have produced a new video that shows precisely how to alleviate the problem, using the proven Terralift system that has been in operation for over twenty-five years.
As soon as the heavy rains come areas of turf compaction and panning become selfevident with large stretches of standing water.
Once treated, the area will benefi t for many years to come as has been demonstrated by Terrain Aeration over the years for thousands of sports venues, golf courses, parks and amenity areas.
The deep penetration process is used to great effect around trees, especially where the ground has become very compacted due to foottraffi c.
The Terralift system has treated such notable areas as the Royal Parks, Sir Harold Hillier Gardens and many National Trust properties. But it is equally benefi cialinrelievingcompaction and creating drainage on formal lawns and even small gardens as well as sports pitches and golf greens.

Marley Eternit Antislip decking creates striking community boardwalk
Marley Eternit Antislip decking has been specified on a pioneering project to build a brand new community in Leicester.
The European redwood decking has been used to create a stunning timber boardwalk, providing a scenic pedestrian link and acting as a focal point for the entrance of the New Lubbesthorpe development.
Situated between Leicester Forest East and Enderby, New Lubbesthorpe is an ambitious project to develop a complete community, including 4,250 high quality new homes, two primary schools, a secondary school, as well as retail and business space.
Marley Eternit’s Antislip Plus decking, with a smooth profile, was chosen to create the boardwalk, giving pedestrians the opportunity to walk over, or around the lake, adding a park-
like aesthetic to the entrance of the site. The curved boardwalk also features wooden benches, so residents can stop and take in their surroundings.
Marley Eternit Antislip decking boards are specifically designed to provide a durable and effective external anti-slip surface to minimise any risk of slipping –even in adverse weather conditions. They use a unique formula of resin-based aggregate inserts, which are injected into the deck board grooves.
Over 3,000 metres of the Antislip Plus decking was installed on the New Lubbesthorpe boardwalk. The boards were also treated with MicroPro, a preservative system which incorporates micronized copper co-biocides to improve durability and provide a natural timber look.
Public spaces can be green, clean and safe for all
By 2050, the UN predicts the global population will be over two thirds urban.
The quality of life in our urban areas is, as a result, increasingly becoming a key focus. Accountability lies with organisations responsible for maintaining urban areas to
ensure they are clean and healthy environments for all to enjoy.
With issues such as depression and anxiety on the rise in urban spaces, there is a proven need for inner-city green spaces and the direct impact they have on improving our health. It’s a key factor to determine whether a
town or city is a healthy place to be, enjoyable to live in and somewhere where we want to raise our next generations.
Maintaining and improving the quality of life in and around our urban areas is being made simple for organisations using the Foamstream system.
Not only does Weedingtech offer an integrated solution for vegetation control, they have also developed the cleaning and sanitisation side of their offering to allow organisations to spread their costs over multiple company departments.
Traditional street furniture cleaning and maintenance is made easy with their world-renowned, organic, hot foam system.
With a simple, quick-releaselance-change function, Weedingtech makes servicing our urban and green spaces an easy task for any organisation.
By using their patented Foamstream system to deliver environmentally friendly, plantbased foam to insulate the heat delivered by the hot water, you need just one machine for a multitude of jobs.

Composite Prime cements distribution partnership with Taylor Maxwell
Composite Prime’s market share has soared following a tie-up with a new high-profi le distributor.
The historic Hitchin Market Square paving in Hertfordshire was successfully refurbished and repointed with GftK’s vdw 850 Paving Joint Mortar 9 years ago and is still going strong and ready for another busy Christmas.
The work was all carried out and completed just in time for the Christmas Celebrations just under 9 years ago in November 2009.
All previous pointing materials were failing in just a year or two of the demanding environment, with multiple heavy duty loadings and exposure, plus frequent mechanical street cleaning etc. However, following the Engineers
extensive research and trials to fi nd the best refurbishment paving groutingsystemonthemarket, this time the project was completed on time and on budget, because work could continue and be completed using GftK’s vdw 850.
Even despite the wet weather and low temperatures throughout that would have made any cement or single-pack pointing mortar useless and doomed to failure in these joints. Now after 9 Years, the historic market is looking good and will continue to do so for a good few more years yet.
Taylor Maxwell has teamed up as distributors of Composite Prime’s HD Deck Dual and HD Deck XS, supplying timber and builders’ merchants with stock nationwide, leading to an increase in new business.
Of the two decking ranges that are now distributed by Taylor Maxwell, HD Deck Dual is the undoubted rising star. It utilises
the True Grain colour system to create the look and feel of traditional timber, without the need for annual maintenance and treating.
Unique dual-sided boards allow decks to be laid with contrasting colours, a supply chain consideration that has added appeal to both stockists and a growing number of end-users. Composite Prime’s extra-strong decking, the HD Deck XS, is also in growing demand.

Show Preview
SALTEX 2018 is almost here and all roads once again lead to the NEC
When the 73rd annual SALTEX exhibition opens its doors at the NEC, Birmingham on 31 October and 1 November, visitors can not only look forward to a comprehensive product display spread over three large halls, but they will also gain a great deal of expert information through the free-to-attend extensive
education programme of CPDaccredited seminars and benefit from knowledge-gaining opportunities through other unique show features.
The exhibition is the longeststanding event of its kind in the world, having been held almost every year since 1938. Over the years, the event has brought the
industry together to network, learn and view the latest innovations and each year show organisers listen intently to show feedback to ensure that the event continues to grow and meet the industry’s expectations.
This year, over 300 exhibitors and some 9,000 visitors are expected to be in attendance
and there is plenty on offer for those working in or involved in landscape design and management.
The show floor will be bursting with everything a visitor needs to increase their efficiency and improve operations so if you are a landscape architect/ designer, contractor, gardener, forester or horticulturalist, then this is your show.
Inventions and innovation New for 2018, SALTEX visitors can expect to experience the very latest groundscare ingenuity in a new area on the show floor which is purely dedicated to innovation and new concepts in grounds management (see more information inside our special preview supplement).
The CPD-accredited seminars are free to attend and registration is now open for all sessions that are due to take place in four purpose-built seminar theatres on the SALTEX show floor.
Feedback gathered from last year’s seminar delegates has helped organisers to create an even better line up of speakers and learning opportunities to suit the needs of all SALTEX visitors at this year’s event (full details inside).
Visitors can also get free advice at the Job Clinic. Located on the IOG Hub, industry expert Frank Newberry will be hosting 15-minute one-to-one sessions covering CV writing to interview techniques. To book an appointment with Frank, visitors are advised to go to the IOG information desk on the IOG Hub as early as possible to avoid disappointment.
Knowledge
is growth Learning LIVE, SALTEX’s all-encompassing education programme, offers attendees a fantastic chance to learn, from seminars and panel debates and network with industry peers.
There will be a number of expert speakers from the UK and abroad focusing on issues that affect the industry including: John Moverley (Amenity Forum), Ruth Mann, (STRI), Dr Colin Fleming (Agri-Food and Biosciences), James HewetsonBrown (Wildflower Turf) and Mark Rowe (Royal Parks).
Improve your soil biology With prolonged heat and drought conditions challenging turf managers this year, SALTEX attendees will no doubt welcome the chance to have their soil profile assessed.
The Pathology & Soil Science LIVE area will be located on the IOG Hub (stand number C180) from 11am to 1pm each day and will allow visitors to look in detail at the symptoms of some common turfgrass fungal disease problems, as infected plants are magnified and displayed on a large screen.
Visitors who may have any soil profiles that are causing problems or concerns are welcome to bring in their own samples to discover how it could be improved.
The future is bright In addition to the wide range of innovative products on display within the indoor environment, visitors to SALTEX will have the chance to see many of these in action through the Outdoor Demonstrations which will be taking place on a grass area directly outside the SALTEX halls 6,7 and 8.

Makita UK teams up with BALI again
Makita UK will be returning to the BALI Zone at Saltex this year which takes place at the NEC in Birmingham, 31 October – 1 November 2018. Makita will be on stand K190d, Hall 6.
The BALI Zone features and promotes leading BALI registered affiliate and contractor members. Also confirmed for this year are Boningale Nurseries, Green-tech, British Sugar TOPSOIL, EverEdge and YMCA Training.
The Makita UK stand will showcase the ever-growing garden machinery range suitable for professional landscaping contractors, groundsmen and forestry workers.
“We are really looking forward to returning to the BALI Zone at this year’s Saltex and to be teaming up with other leading names in the landscaping industry,” says Mark Earles, Business Development Manager,
Makita UK. “There will be a focus on our expanding cordless range but visitors will be able to learn about the entire collection including our petrol and electric models.”
The 18V battery platform makes it economically viable for the tool owner as there is the option to purchase the ‘body only’ version for those who already own batteries for their other Makita power tools. This battery platform has set an industry benchmark but still continues to expand with innovations such as
the twin-18V technology which can power a 36V motor.
Using battery powered grounds care machines means that exhaust emissions are zero –petrol engine exhaust fumes are eliminated and the risk of ground contamination from spilt petrol and oil is removed altogether.
Many Makita grounds-care machines offer a considerable reduction in vibration and can be used all day without harm to the operator.

Reesink Turfcare to launch two new Toro machines
Bringing you Toro’s first superduty utility vehicle, the Outcross 9060, and the brand’s new 12ft pull-behind rotary mower is distributor Reesink Turfcare on stand H010 at SALTEX 2018.
Both machines are designed to ensure groundsmen can do a lot more, with less.
Powered by a 59.8-horsepower Yanmar liquid-cooled diesel engine, the Outcross can tow up to 16,000lbs and has an optional cargo bed that can hold 4,500lbs of materials. It simplifies operation, optimises power and brings the option of dozens of attachments to perform hundreds of tasks.
Following hot on the Outcross’s heels for making the groundsman’s life easier is the Groundsmaster 1200 pull-behind rotary mower. What’s interesting about this new machine is that it is, says Toro, a pull-behind more than worthy of being called a Groundsmaster such are its capabilities.
rollers which leave a wellgroomed after-cut appearance. The height of cut can be adjusted from 0.5 to four inches, and its wing decks folded up to create a narrow 86-inch transportation width making it easy to get from site to site. Plus, the transport wheels feature a torsion axle and integrated torsion spring which means it can do its job smoothly and comfortably for the operator.
Timberwolf has new woodchippers on display
Visit the Timberwolf stand to meet the compact and powerful TW 160PH Petrol road tow wood chipper and the tough ‘go anywhere’ TW
230VTR variable tracked wood chipper.
The TW 160PH is a compact, strong and fast 6-inch wood chipper. It’s the perfect machine if you’re just starting out as a landscaper; it’s lightweight, easy-to-manoeuvre and simple to service but can still take on the toughest of jobs.
The TW 160PH is just one of the large range of low emission petrol powered wood chippers available from Timberwolf.
The TW 230VTR is bigger, stronger and faster than any other machine in its class,
and its versatility means it’s a contractor’s dream.
The two-speed tracking, combined with the ability to vary the width of the tracks from 0 81m to 1.3m, enables this wood chipper to get straight to work in even the most remote locations.
Add to this the outstanding TW 230 performance and this wood chipper is ruthlessly effi cient at getting the job done.

Kioti to embark on next stage of development
SALTEX marks another exciting step for the development of the Kioti range of products with plenty of new models on show.
First up is the new CS2220 mechanical transmission 21 horse power micro tractor. Powered by a 3 cylinder diesel engine with the highest cubic capacity for tractors of its class it will be a tractor with real grunt.
The chassis is based upon the already well known hydrostatic CS2610. The driver has a surprisingly comfortable and spacious working platform The well laid out controls and power steering ensure easy operation.
For the transmission we have 6 forward and 2 reverse gears. The ergonomic metal bonnet gives the tractor a smart modern look.
Also new is the DK6010CH, with a 3-cylinder tier 3B 60HP engine

A CK3310H hydrostatic 33 hp tractor will also be shown. And Kioti UK expects visitors to the stand to be impressed with their first opportunity to see the luxury cabin that is an option for the K9 2400 Mechron.
The K9 2400 was introduced to the UK only just over the last few months. The cabin is well finished with great visability and low noise and vibration levels. It comes standard with heater. The heater unit is positioned tidily under the front bonnet.
These machines and many more can be seen on Kioti UK’s stand A190.
Ransomes to showcase full range of turf solutions
Ransomes, the Ipswich-based manufacturer of commercial mowing equipment, will be showcasing its full range of turfcare equipment on stand H090 at the NEC in Birmingham during SALTEX.
The equipment on display includes the newly launched Ransomes HM600 and Ransomes TR320, the successful Ransomes MP series and a selection of Cushman utility vehicles and Turfco, Smithco and Ryan products.
The Ransomes HM600 was launched at SALTEX in 2017.
Created on the foundations of the Ransomes MP wide area mower platform, the HM600 builds upon this, providing users with the ability to run three heavy duty flail mowers with mulching technology from Müthing. With all mowers engaged, the 3.2m width of cut delivers exceptional productivity. The fingertip control of individual units makes trimming around obstacles easy and brings new levels of versatility to flail mowing. Units fold up securely to transport easily between work areas and access confined sites.
From a clean, fine, rolled finish across sports pitches to routine cuts, the HM600 leaves an even spread of mulched clippings. It also tackles the irregular cuts, bringing the lesser maintained areas back under control. The HM600 can visit one work site
with the versatility to do it all, the productivity to do it fast and the flail technology for superior presentation.
The Ransomes TR320 was also launched at SALTEX in 2017. It is one of the lightest machines on the market in its category, ensuring minimal compaction to turf, keeping surfaces in pristine condition. A combination of narrow transport width (1.64m (64.5”)), a 1.83m (72”) width of cut, superior slope capabilities and manoeuvrability, allows operators to safely negotiate the tightest of spaces and most challenging terrain. Designed and manufactured at Ransomes Jacobsen’s European headquarters in Ipswich, the TR320 is primarily targeted at the sportsturf and landscaping market, providing a quality maintenance solution for sports
pitches, estates, and light municipal applications.
The MP Series, first launched in 2014, includes the MP493, MP653 and MP653XC. These highly productive wide area rotary mowers are ideal for cutting overgrown areas and sports fields, whilst also giving you the ability to negotiate tight spaces.
Also in the MP Series is the MP495 and MP655: two robust and productive wide area cylinder mowers that leave a pristine finish every time. These mowers are popular choices for maintaining large fields, football and cricket pitches and travelling on roads when required.

Seed and feed focus for Germinal
Germinal will be showcasing its new, all-in-one sports pitch renovation package at this year’s show.
Containing three key elements –Germinal’s A20 Premier Ryesport seed mixture, an appropriate selection of fertiliser products and free sward management advice from one of Germinal’s FACTS (Fertiliser Advisers Certification and Training Scheme) qualified technical experts – A20 Seed & Feed gives groundscare professionals everything they need to renovate sports pitches and to create a playable surface in time for the new season.
The seed element of the A20 Seed & Feed package provides a combination of four topperforming species of perennial ryegrasses: 10% Eugenius, 45% Calico, 20% Eurosport and 25% Eurocordus. Together, these cultivars create a dense sward
with excellent fineness of leaf, a good cleanness of cut, robust levels of disease resistance and fantastic post-winter recovery. The standard seed mixture can also be customised, allowing groundsmen to create a bespoke mixture to meet their specific needs.
For the fertiliser component of the A20 Seed & Feed package, a soil or sand based nutrient programme can be selected. A third option, for park pitches and local community pitches, is also available. All three nutrient programmes are F.A.C.T.S. approved and have been designed to enable the new sward to achieve the best possible results in terms of seedling establishment and sward development. Each package contains a selection of phased release fertilisers and advanced soil conditioners which provide the necessary nutrients and trace elements required during the renovated pitch’s growing-in phase
“The pitch renovation season is one of the busiest and most stressful periods in any groundsman’s calendar,” explains Richard Brown, Germinal Amenity Sales Manager. “Waiting for the renovated pitch to be ready in time for the new playing season can cause even the most experienced and laid-back groundsman sleepless nights. With that in mind, we have created an all-in-one seed, fertiliser and nutrient advice package to help ease the pressure.
“All too often we speak to groundsmen who simply don’t have the time or resources, or in some cases the correct technical knowledge, to develop their own over-seeding and fertiliser programme. By following the simple advice laid out in our new A20 Seed & Feed package, these groundsmen can be confident that they are using the correct rate of the most suitable grass seeds and fertilisers at the optimum time,
and that every penny invested will give their pitch the very best chance of going into the new season in prime condition.”
Aquatic Solutions UK have the largest fleet of Truxor amphibious machines in the Country, along with the most up to date machinery and the most experienced Truxor operators.

DLF focus on ‘prevention rather than reaction’ for winter overseeding
Following a year of extreme weather conditions, a stop by the DLF stand, J100 at SALTEX, will be a must for Turf Managers preparing for autumn and winter overseeding operations. DLF Seeds market leading amenity and sport turf mixtures, from both the Johnson’s Sport Seeds and Masterline portfolios, will ensure turf professionals achieve great results every time.
When it comes to winter overseeding, the aim should be preventative, rather than reactionary.
Ideal for a pre-winter programme, Johnsons J 4Turf has been rated top in European turf trials for disease resistance. DLF’s 4Turf tetraploid ryegrass cultivars are of particular interest to groundsman looking for mixtures
that are hard wearing, germinate quickly and offer extreme winter hardiness.
4Turf tetraploids develop a stronger and deeper rooting system which also improves the efficiency in which nutrients, including Nitrogen, are utilised. Along with a number of other Johnsons Sports Seed mixtures, J 4Turf is available with DLF’s ProNitro® nitrogen seed coating, for significantly stronger and faster establishment.
If winter conditions are particularly extreme and cause loss of the turf surface, it is critical to re-seed quickly to prevent further damage. Johnsons J Rescue 100 is designed especially for winter overseeding. It incorporates
next-generation turf type annual ryegrass Quickston, which delivers fast low-temperature establishment, down to 3 degrees. Quickston has a significantly finer leaf and darker colour than traditional annual ryegrass cultivars, having been bred to blend more effectively with traditional diploid ryegrasses.
DLF’s Technical Product Managers will be on hand to discuss other products from the Johnsons Sports Seed and Masterline ranges, both of which utilise DLF cultivars and breeding technology. They are also once again proud to be sponsoring the IOG Groundsman of the Year award at the annual IOG industry award ceremony.

Ecoplug Max is a patented tree stump control application method which delivers glyphosate directly into the tree stump, killing its root system and preventing re-growth. Each plug contains 300mg of granular glyphosate which are simply placed into holes drilled into the stump using the Ecoplug drill bit. The plugs are then hammered in forcing out the sides of the plug, releasing the glyphosate into the phloem.
Ecoplug Max supports requirements of the Sustainable Use Directive (SUD) to minimise
use of pesticides. With the glyphosate encapsulated inside the unit, it never gets in direct contact with anything else but the plant, minimizing the risk of the operator coming into contact with chemical or chemical spillage. It also eliminates the risk of damage to surrounding trees and vegetation. Quite simply, it stays where it belongs –inside the plant.
Visitors to the stand will also benefit from learning more about the popular Turf Rewards programme which offers all ICL customers the chance to earn points from purchases and convert them into a range of valuable agronomic or educational items. The programme is perfect for golf, sports and amenity turf managers with an extensive range of items on offer such as workplace tools, clothing and work wear, and educational vouchers. Not only does it benefit the turf manager
but it is of advantage to the team, the turf, and the organisation they work for by maximising budgets with every purchase.
As well as showcasing their everevolving product ranges, the ICL technical team will be on hand at SALTEX to talk all things turf and landscape. The stand will also feature a coffee barista, so
whether you are seeking advice on combatingdiseases, generally looking to improve your turf or landscape areas or have any other questions about your maintenance programmes then ensure that a visit to stand K030 is on your agenda.

Revolutionary technology on show from John Deere
Available in Europe from 2019 exclusively on John Deere’s ZTrak 900 Series commercial zero-turn rotary mowers, the new Michelin X Tweel Turf airless radial tyre means customers may never need to buy rear tyres for their zero-turn mowers again.
Unlike traditional pneumatic tyres, the Michelin X Tweel Turf virtually eliminates tyre downtime and is nearly maintenance free.
A new Z994R model equipped with X Tweel Turf tyres makes its UK & Ireland show debut on the John Deere stand (E080) at SALTEX 2018 at the NEC, Birmingham in November, alongside the company’s latest compact tractor and lawn tractor developments.
Offering a combination of operator comfort, productivity and a high-quality finish, the Z994R is designed to cater for customers looking for a more compact solution to working in restricted spaces. It features a powerful 25hp (18.4kW) diesel
engine together with a heavyduty frame and a belt-driven deck for optimum power efficiency. High output is further achieved by the 137cm (54in) 7-Iron PRO side-discharge rotary mower deck.
Options include the exciting new Michelin X Tweel Turf tyre, which avoids downtime from punctures when compared to traditional pneumatic tyres. It has the same dimensions and bolt pattern as a standard tyre, but features automotive rubber technology that allows the tread to last up to three times longer. The Tweel also reduces ground compaction and increases ride quality, which is enhanced by the mower’s new ComfortGlide seat.
Using pioneering technology first introduced by John Deere on its agricultural tractors and other self-propelled equipment in 2001, a top of the range 4066R compact tractor can also be seen for the first time equipped with a StarFire satellite receiver and AutoTrac Universal automatic
steering system. This is now being made available on the company’scompacttractorrange to help operators achieve higher levels of accuracy and input cost savings when working with implements such as amenity turf sprayers and spreaders.
An enhanced range of highcapacity commercial mower decks has also been announced for the popular John Deere X940 Series diesel lawn tractors. These are designed to increase performanceandfurtherimprove operator convenience.
The robust construction of these decks, which are stamped from a single steel plate, ensures that theyarebuilttolastandservethe needs of demanding commercial operators. Available with cutting widths of 137 or 152cm (54 or 60in), the decks are uniquely designed to handle high volumes of material.
Upgrades have been made to the drive-over ramps for even easier connection of the mower deck to the tractor. In addition, the X940 Series now comes as standard with a new deluxe seat featuring adjustable back support, with an air ride suspension seat available as an option. Both seats are now fi tted with armrests.
The existing MulchControl feature, which allows simple changes between grass discharge and mulching, has also been enhanced by the addition of an optional hydraulic actuator known as One-Touch This increases the speed of changing between modes for increased uptime and ease of operation.
All these new products will be available at John Deere dealershipsintheUKandIreland from spring 2019.

Bayer previews new IVM herbicide at SALTEX
to this year’s SALTEX event will have the chance to preview a new pre-emergence total herbicide that has been submitted to HSE-CRD for formal approval and is expected to be ready for the 2019 season.
Lewis Blois, Bayer national account manager, explains that ‘Project BES012’ will provide amenity contractors with broad spectrum weed control across a wide range of surfaces from open soil and gravel surfaces to fence lines and railway ballast, as part of a targeted treatment programme.
“The herbicide’s dual active formulation contains diflufenican and a new active ingredient for the UK, iodosulfuron-methylsodium,” he says.
“Used alone, it provides preemergence control, giving a residual barrier to prevent weeds from germinating and establishing. Alternatively, after the two-leaf post emergence stage, it can be mixed with glyphosate to enhance performance.
“This means the product can be used flexibly across different environments providing control
against hard to manage weeds for up to four months.
“Using ‘Project BES012’ as part of an integrated vegetation management (IVM) programme canalsohelpamenitycontractors to minimise weed resistance. The combined active ingredients give a dual mode of action to reduce the chance of resistance occurring.
“Trials have shown that this product provides good control for even the hardest to tackle weeds, so I would encourage contractors to come and visit our stand at SALTEX to hear fi rsthand how it can be incorporated into programmes,” says Lewis.
Dr Colin Mumford, Bayer technical manager, will present a session at the event on 1 November at 1:20pm, on the changing face of vegetation management. Colin will discuss innovations within the sector and how legislation affects the development of new products.

Turfcare, the UK and Ireland distributor of the Ventrac multiimplement compact tractor and Ryan turf maintenance equipment, is returning to SALTEX on stand B124. With the business celebrating its second anniversary in January 2019, it has been an exciting time for Managing Director Rupert Price.
“We have come a long way in a short space of time,” he said. “It’s been a roller coaster ride establishing a network of dealers and doing demonstration tours across the UK, but it has worked.
“Also, the addition of the Ryan franchise last year has broadened our product portfolio, enabling us to offer customers a comprehensive range of turfcare equipment.
“What is particularly pleasing is that some of our early Ventrac customers are coming back to add further attachments or in some cases, buying another machine.”

Two BLEC seeders set to impress
It has been a very busy year for BLEC, appointing dealers, streamlining manufacture and product ranges. Continuing at full steam into the autumn, BLEC will be returning to SALTEX on stand M080, with two popular seeders on show.
BLEC’s Cultipack Seeder is a well proven, accurate seeding
system that eliminates the issue of tyre marks sustained with tractor-mounted seeders. This highly manoeuvrable pedestrian unit features front notched rollers which crush lumps and make pockets for the seed to be delivered into, which the rear set of rollers then buries into the top 12mm of soil. Its low ground pressure makes the
Cultipack particularly effective on sensitive ground.
For those that prefer a tractormounted seeder, ideal for use on both fine turf and amenity areas, the BLEC Multiseeder will be another highlight. Offering accurate distribution for all seed types and simple, efficient adjustment, the Multiseeder is available in a range of working widths from 1.2m to 2.1m.
The floating twin spike rollers follow contours, saturating the surface with up to 1890 holes per square metre, helping to achieve accurate distribution and high germination, all with minimal surface disruption.
The team will also be on hand to answer any questions and discuss future developments, which will see the BLEC range of specialist landscaping and turfcare equipment continue to impress.
Wiedenmann’s artificial kit lines up alongside natural grass favourites
Wiedenmann UK’s line up for Saltex has arguably its widest range of machines for professional grounds care maintenance. For those whose focus is synthetic pitches, both their entry level cleaner/ collector, the Terra Clean 100 and the top of the range, extra thorough Terra Clean 160, will be on show.
Land driven, the Terra Clean 100 can be towed behind utility vehicles from 12 hp without the need for a PTO. As no hydraulics or electrics are required it is favoured by organisations with a small number of pitches to maintain.
Using world first technology, the Terra Clean 160 is a sweeper, cleaner and collector. It combines
both a sieved separation system with a dust cyclone extraction system to filter and remove miniscule deposits. Moving to natural grass, Wiedenmann UK’s most popular trio of machines -the Terra Spike GXi8 HD deep aerator, the Terra Rake 1.7 m and Super 500 will all feature for up close inspection. The GXi8 HD is both efficient and
fast and tines to 250 mm; the Terra Rake features four rows of aggressive spring tines which rip out thatch moving at speeds of 15 km/ph while the Super 500 is a multi-tasking genius sweeper, collector, scarifi er of choice.

Sign up for Learning LIVE 2018 educational sessions
SALTEX event organisers have revealed exciting details about this year’s all-encompassing education programme – Learning LIVE.
The CPD-accredited seminars are free to attend and registration is now open for all sessions that are due to take place in four purpose-built seminar theatres on the SALTEX show floor in Halls 6, 7 and 8 at The NEC, Birmingham on 31 October – 01 November.
Last year’s Learning LIVE programme was the biggest one yet and featured more than 100 industry experts who took to the stage to address a variety of topical issues and highlight best practice case studies within the turf care industry – and feedback gathered from seminar delegates has helped organisers to create an even better line up of speakers and learning opportunities to suit the needs of all SALTEX visitors at this year’s event.
Day one will feature an interesting panel debate featuring Professor Colin Fleming (AgriFood and Biosciences Institute), Neil Stubley (AELTC), Tony Bell (Middlesbrough FC) and Andy Gray (Southampton FC), who will discuss a chemical-
free alternative to clean up your soil. Adam Witchell (Forest Green Rovers FC) and Roy Rigby (Manchester City FC) will be among those highlighting emerging trends in groundsmanship and a panel of professional groundsmen including Anthony Facey (Colchester Utd FC), Dave Mitchell (Carlisle Utd FC) and Stuart Vause (Castleford Tigers) will be discussing groundsmanship on a budget and sharing valuable money-saving tips.
Elsewhere on day one HR consultant Frank Newberry and Scott Tingley (Watford FC) will be on hand to provide career development tips and reveal how to secure the top jobs, while delegates will get the chance to ask questions to a panel of pest and disease experts in a session run by the Amenity Forum. There will also be plenty of technical advice on offer within Dr Ruth Mann’s (STRI) presentation on how technological advances are helping to improve turf grass quality on playing surfaces.
On day two, Phil Garrod (Advance Grass Solutions) will be sharing new ideas that have had successful outcomes in preparing pristine turf for multi
sports on a single site and Ted Mitchell and Corin Palmer from the RFU will explain how the RFU and Premiership Rugby are raising the standards of groundsmanship. Andy McKay (Sussex CCC), Gary Barwell (Warwickshire CCC) and Chris Wood (ECB) will also explain how to prepare a cricket wicket to world-class standards.
In addition, phosphite for coolseason turf grass management; sports pitch renovations; the benefits of topdressing and
education in the sports turf industry will be addressed by expert speakers including Andy Spetch (British Sugar Topsoil) and Dr Stewart Brown (University Centre Myerscough).
This is just a snapshot of sessions available at this year’s show. Go to www.iogsaltex.com to check out the full programme, register your visit to SALTEX and book into your preferred sessions to avoid the queues.

Crystal Green eco-friendly fertiliser takes centre stage for Headland Amenity
Crystal Green will feature heavily on the Headland Amenity stand at SALTEX 2018.
A source of slow-release phosphorus, nitrogen and magnesium recovered from nutrient-rich UK waste water, Crystal Green makes for an ecofriendly fertiliser that enhances nutrient efficiency - perfect for easily-leachable, sand-dominated rootzones.
Most phosphorus fertilisers are highly water soluble and rapidly react in the soil becoming unavailable for plant uptake.
As turfgrass grows it produces organic acids, such as citrates, to help roots absorb nutrients.
The nutrients in Crystal Green® are citrate-soluble, releasing slowly in response to organic acid production, gradually supplying the soil solution to meet plant demand. This process minimises excess phosphorus in the soil, lowering the risk of leaching and runoff while providing the turf a season-long supply of phosphorus according to the plant’s requirements.
Crystal Green ® granules are uncoated, 99.9% pure, dust-free,
and maintain their slow-release capabilities even if cracked or broken.
Whilst the original Crystal Green ® 5-28-10 formulation is suitable to aid establishment and to maintain Phosphorus availability in free draining soils, it is also a perfect slow-release partner in fertiliser blends. It features in Headland’s Xtend 1010-10+2MgO slow-release renovation/recovery fertiliser, which also includes a composted organic base, seaweed meal and humic acid.
The finished product works as a pre-seeder and establishment fertiliser with both slowrelease N and P, perfect for use on winter sports pitches, cricket outfields and racecourse turf, as well as golf tees, fairways and surrounds.
The Headland team will also be on hand to discuss their full range of innovative turf nutrition, health and management products in their new stand location, H050.

Versatility of Major Swift roller mower enhances green city status
Cardiff has more green spaces per person than any other UK city, making it one of the most liveable European cities.
With some 1600 acres of grass to maintain in the Welsh capital, Area Manager of Cardiff Council Parks Services Will Power looks for a mower with versatility.
“We’ve got to keep costs down so we look for a mower that’s going to achieve all.” Witnessing the Major Swift Roller Mower handle a variety of conditions convinced him to look no further.
The wide-area mowers feature a 60mm blade overlap and custom-designed gearbox that work together with high blade tip speeds of 75m/s for a professional striped finish every time.
The gear-driven roller mower delivers a fine finish on long and short grass – allowing managers to save money. “The Major Swift has a direct drive with gearboxes on each blade which copes with short grass and a lot longer grass as well. We are able to do that with one mower instead of buying a whole fleet, reducing our purchasing costs,” says Will.
Produced using Strenx™ 700 MC high-strength steel and
polished with a galvanised body, the Swifts are available in 3-point linkage and trailed configurations from 1.9m to 5.4m working widths. The winged model features a 1.9m transportwidthallowingforeasy access with wing lock for safe road transportation.
“Major mowers are excellent cost-wise because of the simplicity and ease to work,” continued Will. “Cheap to run, cheap to maintain, but have that build and quality that will give you the fi nish that you require. We started off with a 12000 Major mower and now have four Major mowers.”
Major Equipment will debut the latest edition of its Swift Roller Mowers at Saltex 2018 in Birmingham.
Special guest Tim Stiles, former Head Gardener at Sherborne Castle and Estates, will be at the Major stand (Stand J112) to meet and discuss the challenges managing an estate garden. Call into to chat with Tim Stiles and see the new Major Series 2 Swifts along with the Cyclone and Contoura mowers.

EFI technology engines on Walker Mowers
Following the announcement of increasing their SALTEX stand space by 25% , Walker Mowers UK have confirmed the European launch of their new 19hp EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection) Kohler powered engine commercial mower will take place at this year’s SALTEX show on stand F030.
The new C19i model powered by an efficient Kohler 19hp EFI engine, is a high production mower ideal for commercial and residential operators. With its compact size and large 247 cu.ft. grass collector Walker claim it is one of the most agile grass-handling machines on sale in the UK and is available with different mower cutting widths.
EFI engines outperform conventional carburetted engines by an average of 25%, that’s pretty good when you translate this saving at the fuel pump. Walker Mowers and Kohler engines have
been working together since the late 1990’s on EFI technology and this technology is now available on six of their models. Improved fuel consumption and a cleaner more efficient way to produce power makes the Walker out front commercial ride on mowers more attractive than ever to own and use.
And if that’s not enough to attract attention on their stand,
working with EFT Finance, Walker Mowers UK can offer, (subjecttostatus),anewWalker Mower for as little as £46 per week – APR 5.8%.

Honda invests in new generation of engines
The “Honda Group” consists of Honda Motor Co. Ltd. and its 442 group companies in Japan and beyond.
The main business segments in which the company operates are ‘Motorcycles’, ‘Automobiles’ and ‘Power Products’, but the company is also engaged in other fields such as ‘Aircraft’ and ‘Aircraft Engines’, ‘Robotics’ and ‘Home Energy Management Systems’.
Honda is serving ~31 million (and rising) customers a year, of which ~ 6.2 million (and rising) are ‘Power Products’ customers.
Being a global company offering a variety of products, and serving a variety of customers in the different markets, Honda adopts a broader view when it comes to ‘environmental protection’ which can be summarized as “reducing the environmental footprint” (at best “reducing that footprint to zero”), with “electrification” being just one aspect of sustainable growth the company is aiming for.
By 2050 Honda aims to halve CO2 emissions against ‘2000 levels’. An ‘interim target’ was set that aims for a reduction of 30% of global average CO2 emissions from Honda products by 2020 against ‘2000 levels’.
Honda will be launching the new compact and lightweight GX50 combining excellent emission performance, low fuel consumption, low noise, and low vibration.
The GX50 has an excellent power-to-weight ratio of 0.32 kW/kg that is as good as any common 2-stroke engine but with
the benefits of lower emissions, better fuel consumption, lower noise and vibration.
To emphasize its purpose the GX50 is equipped as standard with a paper air cleaner element and has adopted all the easy service items from the GX25/35 such as single bolt engine cover and easy to open air cleaner cover.
By introducing the New GX50, Honda intends to expand the customer base of M4 engines which will also lead to the expansion of GX25/35 sales.
Honda has decided to offer a complete a new line-up of gasoline engines to power applications that require an engine with verticallyoriented crankshaft (such as lawnmowers).
Statistics show that the market for ‘consumer’ (vertical shaft) gasoline engines is quite vast and notwithstanding the upcoming trend of electrification is still amounting to around 10 million units globally. On the other hand, future emission regulations as well as customer expectations are becoming more stringent. With the new line-up of engines, Honda wants to increase its global market share by meeting both customer expectations and the challenge of complying with future emission regulations.
Although fully re designed, the engines will stay in the “GCV” category in order to maintain continuity, but the name will be GCVx. The “X” stands for “next” generation of verticalshaft Honda engines.

Students given chance to contest for prestigious College Cup
The SALTEX College Cup returns again in 2018, a studentled sports turf challenge it is an academic test of turf management knowledge for student competitors who are enrolled at a college on a relevant course of study.
Being staged at SALTEX, on 31 October, at the NEC Birmingham, teams of up to four students will embark on a competition consisting of paperbased multiple choice and short answer questions concerning turf management, plus answer questions based on a case study in the form of a presentation.
The competition, sponsored once again by Ransomes, will also include live test samples for the physical identification of threats to turf health.
After winning the SALTEX College Cup for the second year running in 2017, students from CAFRE College in Antrim, Northern Ireland, enjoyed an unforgettable experience of helping with pitch preparations at the 2018 Six Nations Championships at BT Murrayfield Stadium.
Launched at the show in 2016, CAFRE was the first college to have its name engraved on the trophy and as part of the prize, the winning students were part of the Wembley grounds team at the 2017 FA Cup Final.
CAFRE returned to SALTEX 2017 where they saw off competition from four other colleges to reclaim the trophy. As well as receiving a £500 cheque and £50 Amazon vouchers for each student, the CAFRE team was presented with another prize that money can’t buy – preparing
the pitch at the 2018 Six Nations Championships for the Scotland vs England game.
The CAFRE team arrived at BT Murrayfield on the Friday afternoon before Saturday’s match and were soon mowing the pitch –firmly cementing the students’ names on the very small and exclusive list of people to have cut the BT Murrayfield pitch.
After a 7am start on the big day, the CAFRE team were part of the busy yet meticulously planned pitch preparations, and it would not be long before their work would be broadcasted to millions worldwide.
Dan Prest, the IOG’s head of membership services, felt honoured to see such a finely tuned grounds team at work and was quick to thank everyone involved.
“I was amazed by the willingness of the BT Murrayfield grounds team to be here, there and everywhere for the greater good. It really was a case of all hands to the pump but they still gave the CAFRE students the best possible experience.”
All colleges interested in participating in the 2018 SALTEX College Cup should email Dan Prest at dprest@iog. org for more details.

New CubCadet fixed head mower set to revolutionise grounds maintenance
Following on from their hugely successful INFINICUT Floating Head Mower, Cub Cadet are launching a new range of INFINICUT Fixed Head mowers at SALTEX - and visitors to stand H075 will be the first to see them.
Combining with this new range, the company is also introducing a brand-new cassette which promises to transform the all-important post-match ‘clean up’ cut. As the skillset of our
Groundsmen continues to excel, it’s important that they are provided with the appropriate tools to capitalise on all of the other agronomic advances employed within our industry.
The new INFINICUT Fixed Head is specifically designed to do just that.
It continues to enjoy many of the key benefits of the floating head version and is available in 22”, 26”, 30” and 34” cutting widths. Industry
leading cut quality remains at the centre of Cub Cadet’s design philosophy, with the fixed head model employing the same technology that has seen the floating head mower scoop many industry awards.
Being more affordable, the new INFINICUT Fixed Head will help a broader market base to benefit from the numerous advantages of Cub Cadet’s unique cutting-edge technology.
Key attributes such as the Lithium battery power, interchangeable cassette options and quiet operation come as standard.
With much of the design of the INFINICUT motivated by the requirements of industry professionals, the latest cassette innovation from the Cub Cadet TMSystem has also been developed as a result of continued dialogue with Groundsmen. Dissatisfied
with the current methods employed to clean debris from sports turf following matches, the new SMARTTurfClean cassette is a patent-pending design to effectively clean turf surfaces.
By attaching the cassette to the INFINICUT (fixed or floating head versions) not only does it become more cost effective than traditional solutions such as dedicated rotary mowers, but it also performs the task without stressing the plant - a huge benefit when taking into consideration the continued reduction in the availability of chemicals to combat turf disease.
Being quieter, gentler, more affordable and more effective than a rotary, the SMARTTurfClean is aptly named.

Isuzu Grafter Green proves to be the ‘smart’ choice
Following the successful performance of their first four Isuzu Grafters, Midlands sister companies Smart Cut Ltd and TFN Landscapes have now purchased a further 10 of the latest Isuzu Grafter Green 3.5 tonne rigids.
These are joining the 40-strong combined vehicle fleet on a progressive basis from May to October this year.
Now representing over 35% of the Smart Cut and TFN fleets, the Isuzu N35.125 Grafter Green rigids have become the ‘go to’ marque for commercial vehicles at these Midlands companies, progressively replacing the incumbent Nissan Cabstars. According to Smart Cut and TFN, their aim is to become an exclusively Isuzu fleet by the end of 2019.
All 10 Isuzu N35.125 Grafter Greens being supplied to Smart
Cut and TFN Landscapes during 2018 feature the popular Isuzu Driveaway TGS dropside body configuration.
The new Isuzu Grafter Green rigids are expected to cover a maximum of 40,000 miles in their two year working life within the fleet at Smart Cut and TFN Landscapes and have been supplied by local Isuzu dealer Aquila Truck Centre in Worcester, who have worked closely with them to provide the ideal specification for their various business operations.

Crafter appeal widens with addition of new models
The appeal of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ all-new multi-award-winning Crafter has widened with a raft of new model derivatives now available to order in Van Centres across the UK.
Panel vans with 4MOTION allwheel drive, rear-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic gearbox are now available, along with open body models in single and double cab variants.
At its launch at the Commercial Vehicle Show in April, frontwheel drive versions with gross vehicle weights up to 3.5 tonne were available with three engines and a manual gearbox. The expansion of the range sees available gross vehicle weights now up to 5.0 tonnes.
The addition of open body models to the range opens the door to conversions via Volkswagen Commercial
Vehicles’ Recognised Converter scheme, meaning customers in the market for a Luton, dropside, tipper or other more unusual adaptation have the perfect base vehicle.
Further derivatives will continue to join the line-up in 2018, including a 122 PS engine which willjointhecurrent102,140and 177 PS powertrain options.
The all-new Crafter now offers maximum flexibility as well as a comprehensive suite of innovative technologies.
As on all Volkswagen vans, the Crafter comes as standard with autonomous emergency braking and automatic post-collision braking systems – a fi rst in the vansector.Crosswindassist(for closed bodies) and a driver alert system are also standard.

Reform launch multi-task Metron at Galabau 2018
Announced at the recent Nuremburg Galabau Exhibition for green urban open spaces equipment, specialist bank tractor manufacturer Reform Werke has launched the Metron P48 RC as the first radio-controlled equipment carrier with real hybrid drive. Simon Richard, UK Sales Agent for the Reform range says: “Metron’s concept is based on a 48hp Kubota petrol engine powering a generator which supplies energy to the battery pack and the electric wheel motors.
“The generator also has a direct drive which drives the mechanical front PTO shaft allowing Metron to operate all attachments mechanically.”
Control is via a powerful, ergonomic radio hand-set with
integrated colour display and a working range up to 400 metres.
The hybrid drive also allows the Metron P48 RC to operate purely electrically. If more power is required, the petrol engine can be switched on quickly and easily.
Permanent all-wheel drive to four same size wheels, low centre of gravity and five different steering modes combine to give optimum slope capability.
A range of attachments such as flail mowers, rotary mowers, snow blowers and ploughs, brooms and much more can be easily mounted and Metron’s compact dimensions and 1,000 kg weight make it is easy to transport and operate in tight conditions.

A world’s first for green waste shredding
PSD Groundscare, the leading distributor of professional groundscare machinery had a great few days exhibiting at the APF 2018 Exhibition.
Specialists in supplying high quality and high performing equipment for use in woodland and forestry management, PSD showcased a number of exciting new and existing innovative machines from market leading manufacturers AS Motor, Eliet, Koppl and TS Industrie.
TS Industrie, leaders in Green Waste shredding technology are extending their current range of Green Series Shredders. They previewed the future with the first UK demonstration of the PUMA REMOTE CONTROL TRACKED SHREDDER offering more efficiency, in green waste shredding.
The well renowned Green series Puma 35D has been further
improved in handling and ease of use with the new model Puma 35D R-TK. For use in difficult terrain, the machine fitted with adjustable crawler tracks and lateral stabiliser, is capable of travelling to areas not accessible by trailed chippers or shredders.
The inclusion of a remote control allows the operator to manoeuvre the machine safely into its working position without the need to be in a close proximity of the machine. Fitted with a 35 hp / 26.20 kW Kubota V1505 diesel engine and with a feed capability of up to 160 centimetres, the GS Puma 35D offers effective shredding via the patented “Power Mixed Rotor” technology. This technology uses a combination of hammers to first de-fibre green waste and knives to cut wood to reduce the volume of material by a factor of six.
Also there was the 1st UK showing of the Eliet <750kg
Mega Prof (Petrol) green waste shredder that compliments their existing comprehensive range of shredders including the Super Prof on tracks, offering a unique patented Chopping Principle.
Just like an axe, the blades chop the wood according to the direction of the fibres.

Reesink secures distribution for 1st Products in UK market
Reesink Turfcare has secured the exclusive UK distribution rights for a specialist range of tractor mounted aeration equipment from the American-based company 1st Products.
Better ways to aerate and remove thatch to more efficient seeding, the versatile capsule range of 1st Products tractor attachments, which are available now, complement Reesink Turfcare’s growing range of tractor mounted attachments.
Steven Haynes, sales manager for TYM, which Reesink also distributes and which are a good fit with the 1st Products range, says: “We’re introducing three core product lines back into the UK from 1st Products, having been previously imported by Mumby Machinery.”
First in the range is the AERAVator, a subsurface aerator whose unique osilating vibrating tine system loosens, rather than punches, the soil around and underneath each tine. Allowing
better air and water infiltration and easing soil compaction, the AERA-Vator does the job without leaving cores or plugs behind and means less post-aerification clean up. The AERA-Vator is also able to aerate dry soil to reduce the expense of pre-irrigating; in fact, the harder the soil, the better the AERA-Vator performs.
The AERA-Vator has the additional benefit of being designed with a universal frame system, so extra shafts can be added to expand its capabilities.
Theshafts, availableinconjunction with the AERA-Vator through Reesink Turfcare, are the MultiTine, Multi-Slicer, Multi-Spike andthenon-PTOCoringshaft.
The big brother of the AERAVator, is the AGRI-Vator. A largermachineidealforrelieving soil compaction on bigger areas such as race courses and polo fields, the AGRI-Vator brings the same oscillating hubs as found on the smaller AERA-Vator, but with larger tines to provide more depth and subsoil fracturing.
The biggest advantage of the last item in the range – the VC VertiCutter – is the speed and depth which the machine can work to. Depth adjustments can be made in thefieldwithnotoolsusingasimple detentpinallowingtheheighttobe adjustedin5mmincrements.

Through-the-season Wiedenmann wins it for Nelson GC
Head greenkeeper Gary McKie at Nelson Golf Club, Lancashire had a very specific reason for choosing a Wiedenmann Terra Spike GXi8 HD in April.
“The main attraction was to be able to aerate during the season knowing it caused little disturbance,” he said.
“You want golfers not to notice. We’ve been out mostly with 8mm tines so far. They’re good to use in season. If you are out on a Monday, by Tuesday people can hardly tell. Crucially you can still get down 10” and the job’s been done.”
Gary took over his post in May 2017 at the Dr Alister MacKenzie designed course which sits on a plateau over Nelson and Burnley, and boasts breath taking panoramic views across both Lancashire and Yorkshire.
At his previous job with Pleasington GC, Gary became familiar with the GXi8 HD, so was well versed in the speed and efficiency it could achieve.
“The machine will be in use regularly, not just on tees and greens but walkways and approaches. We’ve been out three times over the green and once on the tees so far. On a long day we can get around all 18 greens or we can just leave two for the next day, it’s that quick. We’ve been varying the depth and if we want to put a little bit of heave we can, by just making one adjustment.
“Later in the year, probably towards the end of October, we will hollow core a couple of specific areas. Our agronomist has suggested sections on two of the fairways that have a little bit of moss. That’s where the flexibility of the Wiedenmann works well - you can deep tine and hollow tine equally easy.”
End the autumn leaf clearing misery with a Billy Goat
Following the summer heat, autumn seems to have arrived early as trees and shrubs shed their leaves to help conserve vital moisture.
Removing leaves and other debris from paths, borders and lawns is now easily achieved with the powerful range of Billy Goat walk-behind, wheeled vacuums. They pick up virtually everything and the large capacity and easy-to-open collector bags simplifies the task of clearing even large areas.
A wide range of 12 machines is available to meet the demands of all sizes of garden. They are all petrol powered using either Briggs & Stratton or Honda engines. The machines are self or hand-propelled and one offers hydrostatic transmission. Some have on-board chippers that shred the material being collected, making it easier to compost
They are all extremely manoeuvrable and simple to handle and clear even large areas surprisingly quickly.
AllmodelsintheLittleBillyand KV Series Range offer optional hose kits, enabling debris to be easily collected from beneath trees and shrubs and other less accessible places.
SISIS key to cricket maintenance at Merchant Taylors’
Merchant Taylors’ has recently purchased a range of SISIS equipment to help maintain the top class cricket facilities on offer at the prestigious school in Middlesex.
Academic prowess aside, at Merchant Taylors’ School there is a huge emphasis on sport and the success of its sporting teams is testament to this.
Cricket at Merchant Taylors’ is exceptionally strong and just last year the school won the national under 17’s cricket competition - which was an outstanding achievement for a day school.
To date there are currently 17 competitive teams throughout the school who enjoy playing the game across 12 grass cricket squares, indoor and outdoor (all weather) nets, grass nets, and 3 bowling machines.
As a result, the school invested in a range of heavy duty SISIS scarifiers – two self-propelled
Auto Rotorake MK.5’s and a tractor mounted Rotorake TM1000.
The SISIS Rotorake TM1000 is a tractor mounted heavy duty scarifier and linear aerator and is un-rivalled when it comes to removing and controlling thatch. It includes a collector box and floating unit to follow ground contours and its contra-rotating reel throws debris forward
ensuring a clean, consistent groove resulting in an excellent finish when the time comes to scarify. With interchangeable blades and a quick, simple depth setting without tools, the grounds team has been quick to notice the benefits.
The Auto Rotorake MK.5 is perfectly suited to a range of applications from sports field maintenance to synthetic turf maintenance, lawns and
amenities.Itscontra-rotatingreel has specially designed tipped blades for clean, consistent cut and maximum thatch removal. Furthermore the Auto Rotorake MK.5 features a selection of seven different interchangeable reels which enables the machine to carry out a variety of maintenance tasks.
Kubota pitch perfect for Melksham Town FC
Kubota UK’s market leading B Series is proving to be a key player for Melksham Town FC after the Wiltshire club secured promotion to the highest league the team has ever played in - the Evo-Stik Southern League.
The club recently completed its first full season at its new £7.3m Oakfields facility, one of the best sporting facilities in the South West of England, following a grant from the Premier League and FA Facilities Fund.
Helping to keep the 16 pitches in perfect condition all year round is Kubota’s B3150, supplied by local independent Kubota groundcare machinery dealer Lister Wilder. The Kubota B3150 tractor is part of the Kubota’s popular B50 Series range, which was superceded earlier this year by the machinery manufacturer with the introduction of its premium B2 Series.
The B2 Series builds on from the industry leading B50 Series, with four models ranging from 20-31kw. The B2 Series boasts a wide range of features, including Kubota’s unique Bi-speed turn. This enables operators to achieve a significantly reduced turning radius for increased manoeuvrability in tighter spaces.
Three of the models feature Kubota’s renowned 3-cylinder diesel engine, whilst the 31hp model is powered by Kubota’s powerful 4-cylinder diesel engine.

High standards maintained at Ladybank
Originally designed by Old Tom Morris, Ladybank Golf Club is a rare thing in Fife, enjoying as it does a reputation as one of the finest inland layouts in Scotland and providing a classic heathland test to lovers of golf away from the sea.
Recently ranked #2 in Great Britain’s Top 100 Courses under £100 by National Club Golfer magazine, Ladybank is established on the Fife Open Championship Qualifying Trail, and has hosted final qualifying on seven occasions since 1978 for the Open Championship played at St Andrews.
It was also a qualifying venue in July for this year’s Senior Open Championship on the Old Course.
Managing secretary Gordon Simpson joined the club over two years ago and carried out a comprehensive assessment of the whole club and course set-up. As a result, the club has made its first
ever John Deere fleet purchase, with equipment supplied by John Deere dealer Double A of Cupar in Fife.
The new machines include a 7500A fairway mower with TechControl display and smaller QA5 cutting units, a 4049R compact tractor, a Pro Gator utility vehicle equipped with an HD200 low-profile amenity turf sprayer and two 220SL walkbehind greens mowers.
“Gordon Simpson admits John Deere would not have been his original number one choice, having never done a deal with the company before in his previous roles. However, he is now happy to state that everything the club experienced over the 20-month process of choosing a new supplier proved that he wanted to partner with John Deere as a brand and Double A as a local business.
