Construction manufacturing achieves growth for fifteenth consecutive quarter
It is sometimes difficult to get a clear picture of how the construction is coping with various challenging when conflicting surveys give such a diverse range of conclusions.
So the Construction Product Association’s most recent State of Trade Survey might offer that clearer picture. It concludes that sales in the UK construction products manufacturing market continued to climb for a consecutive 15th quarter in Q4 of 2016.
This is an impressive result, not least when you consider the construction products manufacturing industry has an annual turnover of £55bn, directly providing jobs for 288,000 people across 22,000 companies.
Rebecca Larkin, CPA Senior Economist said the figures signified a strong 2016 and Q4 also saw the highest balances for the year.
There is a note of caution, however, as alongside the continued uncertainty surrounding Brexit, the industry is seeing a steady rise in costs of raw materials.
“In Q4, two-thirds of firms reported an increase in costs, the highest in five years, and a further 89% anticipate an increase over the next year,” she added. “Rising costs of imported raw materials continue to be a primary driver of cost inflation, but there is now an indication that currency weakness is filtering through to higher energy and fuel costs too.”

Troldtekt
Acoustic panels aid history
A significant new building project has recently been completed at one of the National Trust’s most popular properties in Hampshire, Mottisfont Abbey. Externally the shop is clad in weathering steel, the WCs in timber boarding, while the entrance area is glazed with deep timber fins. In this very busy reception, the deep reveal theme is continued across the ceiling, with Troldtekt acoustic tiles cut to fit vertically between the ceiling joists. This helps to dissipate the sounds and echoes from visitors in an otherwise potentially noisy area. The benefits of the 100% Troldtekt natural wood wool panels include high sound absorption, high durability, natural breathability, low cost life cycle performance and sustainability documented by Cradle to Cradle certification at silver level.

Sioo Wood
Sioo:x treated cedar cladding in the Lake District
Timber cladding is being used increasingly as a priority choice amongst architects and designers for use as a protective skin for buildings. Timber if untreated and left to weather naturally and which manages to avoid the deleterious effects of UV discolouration, black spore, fungal and vermin attack, will weather over time into a silver-grey shade. Sioo:x provides a solution by mirroring the natural ageing process and accelerating the creation of the silver-grey appearance and giving long life protection in a completely environmentally friendly way. Sioo:x penetrates the wood and gives a light surface that is pleasant to touch. Apart from the surface being beautiful, it also is a barrier to algae, mould and rot from gaining a hold in the wood.

Hauraton
Hauraton’s RECYFIX® HICAP® provides reliable surface drainage for 10 years at Doncaster’s Community Sports Complex
It is 10 years since the introduction into the United Kingdom of Hauraton’s RECYFIX® HICAP® High Capacity slot drainage system. The system was first installed in 2006 at Doncaster’s Lakeside Community Sports Complex car park. Officially opened on the 17th December 2006, the Complex was imaginatively planned and built to the highest architectural standards, the development integrating sport and community facilities in a spectacular parkland setting.
Over the years well over 100,000 RECYFIX® HICAP® one metre channel units have been installed in numerous UK projects including supermarket car parks, access areas and major sports venues, distribution depots, airports, public and commercial precincts, industrial, military and container port installations.
The RECYFIX® HICAP® system was the result of an extensive research and development programme run by the Hauraton design engineers during 2005/6. The design work resulted in an innovative surface water drainage system that had a unique ductile iron top tested up to Class F900 loading capability. Using ductile iron prevented distortion of the slots during installation. This feature was not available on other high capacity slot drain systems in the UK at the time. Coupled with the range of sizes available and the light weight of units, the system provided many benefits to the specifier, contractor and client alike.
RECYFIX® HICAP® was developed to facilitate rainwater runoff from large hard landscaped, tarmac and concrete surfaces. The tough injection moulded channels, originally made from a recycled Polyethylene-Polypropylene composite (PE-PP), but now made from recycled Polypropylene (PP).The company offer six HICAP® sizes with volumes ranging from 18.4 to 415.0 litres per metre. The different sizes are designed to easily link up with each other in a step-fall design, so as the volume of water increases downstream the chance of overflow is virtually eliminated.
Based on a supplied soil and strata analysis, Hauraton offers a free hydraulic calculation and component specification service specifically for the RECYFIX® HICAP® system.
Technical information for the RECYFIX® HICAP® range, showing sizing and installation details, is available digitally on www.hauraton.co.uk. – CIVILS tab, as is a video “Why is RECYFIX® break-proof”. Unit 4, Frenchs Avenue, Dunstable, LU6 1BH T: 01582 501380 E: sales@hauraton.co.uk

Newton Waterproofing Systems
Newton Basedrain gets a makeover
Ever since its introduction in March 2001 as the first specifically designed perimeter drainage channel for basement waterproofing, and whilst numerous ancillary products have been added to it, the core Newton Basedrain product has remained completely unchanged. Since the introduction of Newton Fibran XPS 500-C in 2015 however, it became apparent to Newton that the Basedrain needed to be redesigned in order accommodate water that was entering from the drainage channels of the closed-cell insulation boards. In order to facilitate this Newton are happy to announce that our Basedrain and Floordrain channels now have 18mm holes drilled in both sides of the profile, as well as to the top surface, so that the on-site drilling of these recommended extra holes is no longer required.

Sudstech
Public realm and urban areas
Trailflex is suitable for use in public realm spaces reducing trips and falls and providing a pleasant surface on which to walk. Due to the shock absorbent qualities of the surfacing it can also reduce the risk of potential injury to joggers and walkers. We generally recommend a minimum of 50mm of type 3 aggregate for footpaths and 200mm for car parks or driveways. This specification provides a level surface which will remain free of standing water due to the highly porous nature of the product. Trailflex will accept up to 50,000 litres of rainwater per square metre per hour. Forest trails and park paths laid directly on to Terram ONLY. Trailflex is designed to flex to 90 degrees. It can therefore be laid directly on to Terram. Using this method of installation allows Trailflex to adapt.

Marshalls Specified for Prestigious Leeds Project
Victoria Gate is Leeds’ latest shopping and leisure destination. The £165 million development offers visitors a new shopping experience, with an abundance of shops, cafes and restaurants for callers to enjoy.
Marshalls were approached by London based Architects ACME in early 2015 to discuss the supply of multiple shades of grey granite for Victoria Gate’s original flooring plan. Following a series of meetings and discussions, Marshalls were able to achieve the vision of the project designer, providing a blend of 13 precision-cut granites all complying with the relevant performance criteria, and delivered by Marshalls’ managed supply chain.
A first visit to the production facilities in China back in September 2015 with the main contractor McAlpines, architects ACME and sub-contractor Andrews Tiles identified the sources of granite, and also the acceptable degree of shading and mineral inclusion with each of the 13 colours.
The outcome of the trip concluded the selection of granites, the surface textures, the acceptable limits of colour variation and clarity on dimensional tolerance for the units.
Given the tight timescale of the build and installation, the client requested that the whole 3000m2 be dry laid in China and inspected by the architects prior to despatch, so in November 2015, the same team returned to China to inspect the full amount of material ordered for the project.
Over a two day period each unit was meticulously inspected, approved or rejected, and passed for packing to be despatched to the UK in December 2015. The upshot of this investment before despatch gave the client, contractor and installer complete confidence in the materials, and also gave them the opportunity to visualise the design in 1:1
scale in preparation for the installation which commenced in February 2016. Catherine Hennessy, Associate Director at Acme, said: “The design of the flooring at Victoria Gate reflects the quality and intricate patterning of the floors in the traditional Victorian Arcades adjoining the site.
“We developed the pattern of the floor to fade from dark to light with a herringbone contrasting stripe – a repetition of a module which appears deceptively complex.
“Working with Marshalls, we chose 13 types of granite from light to dark that were consistent in colour, available in sufficient quantities, and gave us the effect that we needed. Marshalls was able to provide all the necessary quality assurance and certification we needed, including availability, technical processes and delivery reliability.
“The resulting floor met all our expectations, in terms of design and quality and is an integral and important part of the success of the project. It was a pleasure to work with Marshalls on Victoria Gate and we hope we might have other opportunities to work together in the future.”
The scheme was ultimately delivered over a period of five months including 3000m2 of polished granites and specialist bespoke granite staircase features. The end result is undeniably spectacular, with the eye-catching herringbone design complementing the project’s bold store fronts and diamond panelled roof.
Ancon
Innovative Nexus® Brick Faced Soffit System specified on Bow River Village, London
Surrounded by historic industrial buildings, the Bow River Village development is directly opposite a Grade I listed Mill House, the world’s largest remaining tidal mill. Frank Reynold Architects adopted a classic Victorian Warehouse aesthetic, and needed flawless brick-faced soffits on hundreds of door and window heads to complete the visual.
Ancon, in partnership with Ibstock Kevington, developed a complete soffit and lintel solution using the lightweight Nexus® system. Deep soffits above doorways to the ground and first floor were achieved using 215mm deep Nexus® soffit units with header bond facing, bolted directly to Ancon® MDC brick support angles, while stretcher bond lintels, manufactured 150mm longer to accommodate site variations and ensure perfect alignment with the main facing brickwork, were used at each window head. Deep flying beams above upper storey stairwells were created using ‘special’ soffit units, brick faced on all four sides.
“Being a two-part system, we found the Nexus® brick faced support system easier to install on site than a single piece system. We were able to adjust it quickly and simply and appreciated the flexibility the two-part system offered.”

Twinfix
Twinfix helps restore landmark station roof
Twinfix worked alongside BAM Nuttall Ltd on the recent refurbishment of Lewes station roof in East Sussex, providing them with our lightweight, quick to fit Georgian wired polycarbonate Multi-Link non-fragile rooflights. The remit for Lewes was to replace the 1,178 panels of roof and vertical glazing. The Twinfix Georgian wired effect polycarbonate glazing mimics the traditional Georgian wired glass that it will be replacing, but it will not break in use. It is therefore safer to install and to use as an overhead glazing material, with no risk of glass cracking and shards or glass dust falling onto the platform below. Georgian wired polycarbonate is pre-glazed in the Twinfix Multi-Link framing system, recently redesigned to be narrower (50mm) in order for it to align with older style glazing bars. 201 Cavendish Place, Birchwood, Warrington, Cheshire, WA3 6WU T: 01925 811311 E: enquiries@twinfix.co.uk

Aurubis Architectural
Cambridge Blue with Aurubis
Richard Murphy Architects has created a new campus for Anglia Ruskin University, announced by a dramatic curved façade clad in tiered layers of Nordic Blue Living 3 pre-patinated copper from Aurubis. The second phase building has been given a unique façade of copper cladding and a dramatic stepped roof profile. Richard Murphy Architects’ Director James Mason commented: “Copper cladding is an extremely durable material that supports the longevity inherent in the brickwork façades. The Nordic Blue Living 3 variant effectively gave the closest visual match to a natural patinated copper in our opinion – without the 25-year wait for the weather to do the job for us.” Nordic Blue is a factory-applied patina developed with properties and colours based on the same brochantite mineralogy found in natural patinas all over the world.
Sika Liquid Plastics
From fast food chain to rapid install roof
Sika Liquid Plastics Sikalastic coldapplied liquid waterproofing system and Decotherm insulation have been used as part of a transformation programme to convert a former fast food outlet into a high end restaurant in Cardiff. Main contractor, Knox & Wells, appointed Mitie Tilley Roofing in Cardiff to carry out the roof refurbishment and the roofing contractor proposed Sika Liquid Plastics’ Sikalastic 625 for the scheme because of the system’s ease of installation, speed of cure, competitive price and 20-year guarantee. The single component, vapour permeable polyurethane membrane has been developed to provide rain resistance immediately after installation, making it ideal for projects like this restaurant refurbishment where a vulnerable substrate requires rapid protection. Jet Cox sheds light onto new housing scheme
A FireJet smoke heat exhaust ventilation system (SHEV) from Jet Cox, which is designed to the Code of Sustainable Homes Level 3, is flooding the atrium of a new housing scheme, with masses of natural daylight. Following a thorough appraisal of the unusual D-shaped roof by the Jet Cox Specification and Technical teams, the FireJet system was specified, incorporating two automatic smoke vents measuring 1300 x 700mm, into a bespoke glass rooflight. FireJet SHEV systems come complete with a battery backup system in case of mains failure, so that the control panel can be triggered from either manual override switches, by dedicated smoke detectors, or by interfacing with a third party smoke detection/fire alarm system.

Structura
Getting a kick out of Kalwall
Kalwall translucent cladding is a key feature in the recently renovated British National Taekwondo Centre in Manchester, designed by AEW Architects with Balfour Beatty as the main contractor. One of the main attractions of specifying high performance Kalwall is its unique influence on both the interior and its external appearance, particularly at night. Internally, rooms are flooded with diffused natural daylight which creates a stimulating and healthy exercising environment which, although translucent, also offers privacy. Unlike conventional glazing, highly insulating Kalwall eliminates shadows and glare and the stark contrasts of light and shade. The system also enhances simplicity by eliminating the need for blinds, curtains or solar control.

Envirolead – lead produced exclusively from car batteries
Envirolead® is BS12588 lead produced using only material recovered from car batteries. The sophisticated process extracts and reuses nearly 96% of all constituent parts including polypropylene from the casing, de-sulphurised paste and acidic electrolyte. With the only manufacturing plant of its type in the UK it significantly reduces sulphur discharge, a major contributor to the development of ‘acid rain’. Envirolead is covered by the 50year Lead Sheet Association warranty for rolled sheet on projects undertaken by registered lead workers. This means architects can now capitalise on one of the industry’s most efficient forms of recycling and know they are specifying a product with the lowest environmental impact.

Wetherby
Government changes welcomed by Wetherby
Leading Solid Wall Insulation (SWI) provider, Wetherby Building Systems, has welcomed the changes announced in the government’s response to the ‘ECO: Help to Heat Consultation’ published today. Barrie Stanley, Wetherby’s energy efficiency manager, commented:
“It is fantastic to see that the government has listened to the calls of the industry to make the new ECO funding period a more robust scheme that genuinely helps those that need it most. Ensuring the focus is on insulation for the next 18 months is key to delivering the most effective energy efficiency savings.
“The 25% increase in the minimum number of SWI installs, to 32,000 over the 18 month period, is a huge win for the industry and testament to the unfaltering lobbying from manufacturers, suppliers and trade associations operating in the sector. These changes, along with extending the scheme to the end of September 2018, has provided a level of security and stability for industry, which can now plan accordingly.
‘Ensuring more fuel poor households are eligible for funding by increasing the number of qualifying households to 4.7m is a very positive step, however we hope that this is just the start. There are still some £8m solid wall properties in the UK, half of which include families living in fuel poverty, which could greatly benefit from SWI. We will continue to work with others in the industry to urge the government to build on this next period of funding with future schemes, to ensure we are helping to improve the way of life for the most vulnerable households in the UK.”
Wetherby Building Systems Ltd is the UK’s market leader in the manufacture and distribution of a wide range of external wall insulation (EWI) systems, polymer modified renders, silicone & acrylic thin-coat renders & brick slip systems for the retrofit market. Wetherby’s insulated render systems offer environmentally sympathetic external façade solutions that have been successfully installed on many domestic refurbishment projects, new build schemes, commercial buildings and educational establishments for over 20 years.

We showed them a selection of lifelike digital building images giving them an idea of how the transformed buildings would look. From these images we presented a shortlist of three colour options and then attended site to test the colours on the building panels. This free service assisted them to make a decision over the colour scheme and coating finish before work started on site. The coating systems included Rust-Oleum high performance paint systems. Sika
Sika’s watertight roofing membrane provides sanctuary for stunning new church
The flexible, easy-to-apply, aesthetic properties of Sika’s watertight single-ply membrane proved the ideal solution for a stylish and unusual roof design – the crowning glory of a new, multimillion pound community church. The £4.5million C3 Centre in Cambridge was built to host community events as well as serve as a place of worship. The two-tier building’s architecturally-striking feature is its ‘fantail’ roof. Tapering to a point at one end, the roof’s design presented a challenge to Farrans Construction, main contractors of the church building project. The company required a roofing system which not only offered the optimum watertight performance; it had to complement the structure’s eye-catching design.

Garador
Exciting new colours on garador steel garage doors
Garador is setting an exciting new trend with the introduction of three fresh new colours for its steel garage doors. A new solid Rosewood and solid Golden Oak paint finish joins an attractive new Pastel Green paint finish now offered as standard on Garador’s top selling steel garage door range; which include up & over, side hinged and garage side doors. The new mint and brown tones work well on an external home door and are befitting to properties which feature natural timber or are surrounded by plants and greenery. The paint quality and unique production techniques developed at Garador’s UK factory ensures a deep vibrant colour that endures. The doors are also completely free of rivets – providing one of the smoothest and most attractive appearances available in garage doors.
At AkzoNobel Wood Coatings, with its UK headquarters in Blackburn, the factory coating systems are designed with the user in mind and they liaise with timber joinery manufacturers to produce a full coating specification to suit production processes and equipment.
A typical specification begins with the application of base stains or primers containing impregnation through a ‘Dip or Deluge’ process allowing sufficient product to be absorbed into the timber, especially through end grains with all surfaces easily accessed prior to assembly.
After drying, the coating process continues with specialised sealers designed to offer added protection to vulnerable areas such as joints and end grains. Full drying is carried out at each relevant point of the operation, often using climate control systems which ensure effective curing at each stage is achieved within a typical 4-6-hour period.
After the coating stage is complete that the final assembly and glazing of
the timber joinery item begins, with handles, locks, hinges and glass units being fixed to a fully coated and sealed all around surface.
Finishes include:
Sikkens Cetol WP562- a translucent base stain with resistance to the effect of blue stain fungi.
Sikkens Cetol WF960- A translucent spray applied mid and topcoat based on a newly formulated resin to combat the effects of ‘blushing’.
Sikkens Rubbol WP151- a 2K water borne PU primer with excellent adhesion and premium stain blocking properties
Sikkens Rubbol WP198 - a traditional 1K water borne primer with good flow and stain block properties.
Sikkens Rubbol WF382- a water borne acrylic topcoat for use over 1K or 2K primer systems offering an attractive and increasingly popular semi matt appearance available in a ready mixed RAL9016 shade or the whole spectrum of tinted colours.
It’s all in the factory finishing with AkzoNobel
Boon Edam
Boon Edam provides secure and stylish entry solution for The Francis Crick Institute
Boon Edam, a global market leader in entry solutions has unveiled a quality, engineered solution for a brand new, state of the art building in St Pancras; now home to The Francis Crick Institute.
The biomedical discovery organisation, required an entry solution to seamlessly integrate with its new building’s modern design.
The research centre, a flagship for UK biomedical science and one of Europe’s largest biomedical research facilities, is a base for 1500 scientists and staff, whilst housing technology to help create discoveries for illnesses such as cancer and heart disease. Therefore, the entry solution required advanced security to ensure staff, visitors and equipment could be kept safe and protected, whilst complimenting the design.
With 140 years’ experience with manufacturing entry solutions, Boon Edam ensures its products meet the strictest quality standards. The building is serviced by five Automatic Crystal Tourniket’s. This product was selected following an assessment of everyday use including analysing the number of visitors and size of luggage expected to be carried into the building whilst creating a user friendly and attractive gateway into the building supporting the green principles that were embedded into its design and carried through to its operation.
The revolving doors use a combination of laminated and toughened glass, which results in a reduction in the traditionally framed elements of the door. The minimalistic, all glass revolving doors provided a stylish solution which complimented the new building’s façade. They also met the security requirements; with each Crystal Tourniket supplied with an external night locking door. Finished in stainless steel, the additional feature provided a further layer of security for the building. The night locking door was mounted onto a stainless-steel track fixed to the glass soffit and provided with fully integrated locks.
Ian Goldsmith, Head of Sales at Boon Edam Ltd commented, “We are thrilled to have provided the entry solutions for this building. The cross-border project between Boon Edam BV (Netherlands) and Boon Edam UK was successful in meeting the precise requirements of The Francis Crick Institute. The Crystal Tourniket’s have provided the new building with the secure, eye catching solution desired whilst utilising the environmental benefits of installing a revolving door.”

Bespoke design adds elegance to Hunter Douglas
folding shutters at Mediterranean complex
Motorised folding shutters manufactured by Hunter Douglas have provided deluxe private villas overlooking the Mediterranean Sea with a stunning visual effect as well as practical solar glare reduction. Designed by celebrated Israeli architect Ilan Pivko, the cliff top villas in Harsuf, near Tel Aviv, the first floors of the sleek villas on the south-eastern side are complemented by motorised folding shutters that have an architect-designed pattern in the perforations that give the illusion of falling leaves. The challenge for Hunter Douglas, the international leader in architectural building products, was to create a curved façade of motorised folding shutters that closed at 180 degrees and concealed the runners to ensure that a clean, flat uniform surface is created when the shutters are closed.

First incline lift on London Underground protected by Avire light curtains
Light curtains from lift safety and communication specialist Avire are safeguarding the first incline lift ever installed on the London Underground (LU) network. The former escalator at Greenford Tube station, on the Central line, has been replaced with an incline lift equipped with Memco Panachrome door detectors.
The detectors flash red and green to give passengers a visual indication of when it is safe to enter and leave the lift. The refurbishment project at Greenford fell into two parts. The first saw the installation of a new escalator to take passengers up to the train platforms. Then LU removed the escalator and replaced it with the incline lift.

Flowcrete
Find the Flowcrete Floor for You at Ecobuild 2017
On stand C147 of Ecobuild 2017, Flowcrete UK will be showcasing its range of resin finishes and sub floor screeds that have been designed to create superior, environmentally friendly floors as well as introducing new concrete repair products to the UK market!
Flowcrete UK’s green flooring solutions have been utilised by a long list of high profile locations around the country thanks to the ability of these systems to combine sustainability with both functionality and longevity.
The fast drying Isocrete Alpha Screed is particularly popular among developers of large-scale, high-rise and demanding construction projects thanks to the fact that large quantities of it can be quickly and easily installed. It is also one of the greenest screeds on the market, as 95% of the system’s alpha hemihydrate calcium sulphate binder is reclaimed from industrial by-products, minimising the amount of waste sent to landfill.
Isocrete Alpha Screed is an evolution of traditional anhydrite flowing screeds, as it has a 20% faster drying time and its laitance free finish means that sanding is not required prior to applying a coating - significantly speeding up the overall installation timescale.
At Ecobuild 2017, attendees will also be able to learn about the Floorzone package, which enables specifiers and architects to source each element of a floor build up from only one place! The Floorzone includes decorative finishes such as the seamless resin terrazzo Mondéco range, green screeds, energy efficient under floor heating and noise reducing acoustic insulation.

As of this year, Flowcrete UK is now also able to supply a range of Euclid Chemical concrete repair mortars. There are many factors that must be considered before selecting a concrete repair solution such as location, climate, in-service conditions, and potential corrosives to name just a few. Having access to Euclid Chemical’s high quality products, which have been the repair mortars of choice in the US for a long time, will ensure that developers can easily access the right option for them.
Flowcrete UK has analysed its products and manufacturing processes in order to make its solutions more environmentally friendly. This has led to limiting the use of substances such as Ordinary Portland Cement as well as supplying its products in UN Certified Intermediate Bulk Containers to reduce packaging waste. The durability of Flowcrete UK’s resin systems also provides end users with green benefits, as the longevity of its floors avoids the environmental damage incurred by a flooring refurbishment.

2 Rinnai
Rinnai goes solo
Now available from Rinnai, the leading continuous flow gas fired water heater manufacturer, is the Infinity Solo ReCirculator water heater.
The Rinnai Infinity Solo condensing and low NOX condensing water heater is the first Rinnai product for the UK to combine the advanced technology of its wall mounted continuous flow water heaters with a stainless steel storage cylinder all in one compact footprint.
The design parameters of the Rinnai Infinity Solo, enables designers, installers and engineers to benefit from unique Rinnai technology in applications whereby it was not previously possible. For instance the solo range will incorporate both 35kW and 54kW appliances, ensuring sites with a smaller gas meter can utilise such technologies. The larger Infinity Solo model will also
act as a high-efficiency alternative to gas fired storage appliances that exist in today’s market.
Because the cylinder is stainless steel it greatly reduces the weight compared to glass lined models, which makes transportation and installation a lot easier. As well as the difference in weight, the cylinders available also have extremely low heat loss figures (as low as 1.41kW/h day), which means the customer pays less to maintain the heat within the tank.
One other benefit of the Solo utilising a stainless steel cylinder, is that the life expectancy of the material is far greater than that of a glass-lined equivalent as glass suffers from thermal shock causing it to crack after a period of time. Enquiry 104
