The trade association Interpave has published a new case study on urban design and hard landscaping featuring SuDS, at the award-winning Cambridge Southern Fringe developments. Seven Hauraton drainage systems at Waitrose Boughton, Chester

A beautifully designed Waitrose supermarket with a sales floor of approximately 2,790 m 2 (30,000 ft 2 ) has been opened at Broughton, Chester.

Hauraton’s RECYFIX STANDARD SLOTTED CHANNELS fitted with two types of stainless steel covers, symmetrical and asymmetrical, were installed. RECYFIX STANDARD channels with Elegance stainless steel perforated gratings were also used along the colonnade at the rear of the building.

RECYFIX PLUS 100 channel with HEELSAFE ductile iron gratings were installed at the entrance to the under-croft car park with FASERFIX KS channels used to drain the car park itself.

Two sizes of RECYFIX PRO channels fitted with FIBRETEC gratings were chosen for the area around the plant room.

Remmers Floormix DQ is the ideal solution

The main production area of the Express Contract Drying factory in South Wales required refurbishment. TPS360, the contractor for the project, was instructed to produce a new floor finish that needed to be slip resistant with good chemical resistance whilst providing an attractive and highly durable finish. Remmers Floormix DQ flooring system was chosen for its special blend of decorative colour quartz aggregate and extreme durability which was ideally suited for this application. Due to time constraints on the program, fast curing resin screeds were installed, to falls, to an exacting standard to avoid ponding.

New guide for specifers of blinds

Choosing the right shading product for modern interiors is no longer straightforward and today a specifier needs to know which blinds can help achieve shading and insulation targets for a project, as well as decide between electric or manual control.

Frontrunner Plus entrance matting was installed in several entrances at the University of Copenhagen (UCPH), the oldest and largest university and research institution in Denmark. Manufactured from flexible PVC in the UK and USA by Plastic Extruders Ltd (Plastex), the product features an open grid which scrapes dirt off shoes and allows it to fall through, whilst the absorbent inserts capture moisture, keeping internal floors clean and dry.

Frontrunner Plus comes in 5 grid colours with a choice of 10 different absorbent inserts to allow the perfect match with interiors. Frontrunner Plus is part of the Frontrunner Entrance Flooring range.

Efficient structural stabilisation enables adjacent demolition to proceed

A brand new range of Thermal Interface Units (TIUs) is being introduced by Reliance Water Controls.

The Radiance TIUs offer the perfect solution for community heating networks as they can be tailored to exact requirements when an instantaneous or stored water system is required.

The Radiance TIUs provide multiple dwellings with heating and/or hot water that is energy efficient, eco-friendly and economical by using hot water as the energy source, eliminating the need for gas pipes or flues within individual dwellings and making annual maintenance faster and easier.

Six standard units are available, five for heating and hot water and one chill unit for air conditioning.

Domus thermal duct insulation range extended

Polypipe Ventilation is pleased to announce that its unique Domus Thermal duct insulation range is being extended to cover its 220x90mm Megaduct Rigid Duct System. Megaduct is a range of large capacity rectangular ducting, suitable for larger installations. The system is particularly appropriate for applications which require higher air flow rates associated with whole-house ventilation within larger domestic properties and light commercial environments. Domus Thermal is a patented system that significantly improves the thermal insulation of round and rectangular ventilation ducting in domestic properties, thus reducing heat loss and preventing the formation of condensation.

A growing use for Helifix masonry reinforcement systems is to stabilise existing buildings during a new construction phase or a significant restoration, enabling major structural works to be undertaken safely and costeffectively. A recent project in Williamson Square, Liverpool, saw the engineers ask Helifix to design a suitable structural solution and a scheme was devised using grouted CemTies and SockFix grouted sock anchors. Over 1,000 8mm stainless steel CemTies of varying lengths, bonded with HeliBond cementitious grout, were installed. Some 60 SockFix grouted anchors, 1,500mm long, were then installed at 600mm horizontal centres into the hollow concrete floor slab of the adjacent building at each floor level.

Yeoman Shield leads the way in dementia friendly hospital

Yeoman Shield supplied Guardian Handrail, incorporating signage, to a pioneering scheme by Bradford Teaching Hospitals to provide a dementia friendly environment in their hospitals. The refurbishment involved the use of art, colour and signage to help dementia patients to navigate their way round the hospital. The Guardian Handrail was supplied in a Dusty Grey colour with contrasting accessories in Mid Grey. Signage was incorporated flush to the face of the rail in White offering directional information to hospital visitors and patients. Ultra Corner Protection Angles were also fitted to vulnerable corners of walls to prevent damage which is easily caused by passing people, trolleys and equipment.

As part of National House Building Council (NHBC) building works the upper roof now includes 800sq m Sarnafil Plus roofing system with a 20 year guarantee. In order to replace the existing roof, a three step process took place that saw the existing D100 metal deck overlayed with a T-fleece separation layer before mechanically fixing S327-18 EL membrane using the Sarnabar system.

As with the proven SD door range, all joints are square cut for ease of fabrication. Levolux catches the eye in Manchester

The Former Royal Eye Hospital in Manchester has been dramatically transformed into a new biomedical centre of excellence, with a decorative, bright red perforated screening and solar shading solution, courtesy of Levolux. The Levolux solution comprises perforated, extruded aluminium screening panels, set against a series of integrated walkways, all secured back to the curtain walling system using Levolux’s Triniti Bracket. Levolux also installed its 950 XL Screening Louvres around two roof plant areas. All four elevations of the extended building have been covered by a ‘veil’ of bright red extruded aluminium screening panels, featuring laser cut rectangular perforations.

A total of 381 Room Pods and 57 Kitchen Pods at the new King Edward Quay development in Colchester have been supplied with sustainable hot water services, thanks to three 35kW AEROTOP T air source heat pumps from ELCO UK. The three AEROTOP T heat pumps have been installed alongside a 3,000-litre MAXIS glass lined cylinder, a PISCES pressurisation unit and a plate heat exchanger – also supplied by ELCO UK.

The AEROTOP T air source heat pumps were specified for their high energy efficiencies. All Room Pods have been manufactured off-site by modular manufacturing specialists Elements Europe, who are part of The Pickstock Group.

Significant capital investment in advanced production equipment and renewable energy has been announced by Crittall, one of the world’s leading steel windows manufacturers. It comes at a time when the company’s forward order book is looking extremely healthy both in terms of the home and US export markets. Heading up the programme is an order for an advanced £140K Gianos CNC Machining Centre from leading Italian manufacturers MECAL. This will boost production efficiency and flexible machining operations across the entire range of products produced at Crittall’s factory in Witham, Essex. It will be the first Gianos model to be installed in mainland UK.

Contract interiors specialist, Gradus, has supplied Trans-Edge heavy-duty stair edgings at the National Cycling Centre Manchester.

The track is one of the busiest in the world, so it is fundamental that the safety of visitors is paramount. Kee Builders UK Ltd installed Gradus’ TEXN51 TransEdge heavy-duty stair edgings on the exterior stairs leading up to the main entrance of the cycling centre, providing a hardwearing solution to help reduce the risk of slips and trips.

Independently tested for slip-resistance by the Health & Safety Laboratory, the stair edgings offer a low risk of slip in both wet and dry conditions.

Trailblazing Manor's MSCP testimony to Stirling Lloyd's waterproofing capabilities

The Manor's MSCP in Newcastle upon Tyne continues to demonstrate the importance of effective protection 25 years on from its initial refurbishment, thanks to specialists Stirling Lloyd. Built in the 1970's, this six storey, 583 space reinforced concrete structure was last refurbished in 1989 when Newcastle City Council needed to carry out repairs. Manor's became one of Stirling Lloyd's earliest car park projects when the council specified three of its products; Metaset repair material, Decseal Waterproofing & Wearing Course and Safetrack HW skid resistant surfacing to protect some 20,000m2 of car park decks and, 25 years later, the systems continue to perform extremely well.

Located in Nusa Dua, Bali, Westin Resort’s luxurious Heavenly Spa includes specialist systems from Hanovia, selected by main contractor Barr+Wray to provide UV disinfection. Barr+Wray also installed

equipment for the pool plant and pool attractions, as well as the salt saunas, aroma steam baths and VIP steam showers. The Hanovia system features an automated wiping system that cleans the system and prevents the build-up of residues on the UV lamp. Hanovia’s technical director Mark Aston said: “By adding UV to their water treatment regimes, they’re not only getting rid of harmful chlorine by-products, they’re also saving money and reducing the amount of chlorine used."

Styccobond F58 rubber floorcovering adhesive from F. Ball and Co. Ltd has been used in the refurbishment of the Barclay Stand at Norwich City Football Club. Flooring contractors, Broadland Flooring Ltd., were contracted to refurbish the 1200 m2 stand, which included a bar, toilets and turnstile area, after flooding damaged the original floor. The contractors conducted moisture management tests and suitably prepared the subfloor, using Styccobond F58 to adhere Altro Nuvola Stratus Rubber flooring tiles. Styccobond F58 has a high bond strength and strong initial tack, and is suitable for use with a wide range of rubber floorcoverings.

Brio brings flexible space and style to a London apartment

Brio, the leading manufacturer of interior and exterior folding door and window architectural solutions has provided architects CGT Works with the solution for opening up a Georgian interior in a flexible manner. The owner still wanted the option of closing it off so the decision was made to install custom 3.4m x 8m panel doors –three sliding and one pivoting. The doors were made by a local joiner and installed using Brio’s top hanging Single Run Zero Clearance hardware system.

Newhey chosen for Ibis Styles Hotel, Edinburgh Centre St Andrew Square

Newhey Carpets manufactured over 950 square metres of uniquely designed carpets as part of a huge renovation project at the Ibis Styles, Edinburgh Centre St Andrew Square hotel. Newhey created complete bespoke carpet designs for the guestrooms, corridors and lobby areas with the theme of Scottish culture and location. Two colourways were selected for the guestrooms, one from amethyst, pink, purple and lime while the second palette contained earthier shades of terracotta, yellow and green. Using Flushglaze modular rooflights for a positive work environment

The McGrath Centre is a recent project build undertaken within the grounds of St Catharine’s college in Cambridge and features Glazing Vision’s Flushglaze modular rooflight, which addressed the requirement for enhanced light and space. Glazing Vision designed and manufactured a high specification bespoke shaped modular Flushglaze rooflight which was installed above the auditorium, significantly increasing the amount of natural light that enters the building. Okalux glass was used which features insulated glass elements containing ‘capillary tubes’ in the cavities; these tubes are designed to break up incident daylight and diffuse it throughout the interior of the building.

Stirling Lloyd has made a grand entrance with its Integritank structural waterproofing system at the new £60m Sainsbury's supermarket in Wolverhampton city centre. Some 600m2 of Integritank has been used to waterproof the Raglan Street store's main entrance from the main road which also acts as a podium deck over an underground building housing the supermarket's cash office and staff rooms.

This project involved shot-blasting and cleaning of the new reinforced concrete deck, followed by the application of PAR1 primer and two coats of Integritank which, once cured, was overlaid with paving slabs to complete the entrance walkway.

E E Ingleton have completed two prestigious projects in London using their new PicPerf image perforation system. Using the new software, panels were manufactured for Cadisch MDA installed on the Kingston Riverside development, and for Dane Architectural Systems for the new ‘Project Lions’ facades on Debenhams flagship Oxford street store. Ingletons also manufactured the 187,000 perforated tiles that make up the kinetic façade around the store. The Kingston Riverside panels were based on a scenic photograph and also a classic motion study by the Victorian photographer Eadweard Mybridge. The Project Lions perforated panels & embossed soffit panels were based on a classic French Lace pattern. In both projects, the panels have been LED back-lit to stunning effect.

As part of the recent transformation of the Royal Northern College of Music’s Concert Hall, Fläkt Woods has supplied a range of highly efficient air comfort equipment, including three eQ air handling units, as well as two revolutionary ReCooler Heat Pumps.

The refurbishment project at the Manchester venue took place between January 2014 and November 2014, with the Concert Hall’s capacity increasing to 750. As a result of the increase in capacity, there was a requirement for supplementary heating and cooling capacity. Instead of replacing the main boiler or chiller plant, Fläkt Woods’ ReCooler HP units were specified to provide the required heating and cooling, in conjunction with the air handling system.

Commenting on the project and the system, she said: “We knew from the outset that replacing any of the main heating and cooling plant was not an option, so we looked to the ventilation system to provide the increased requirement for heating and cooling. The ReCooler HP unit has proved to be a great choice and ideal for this type of refurbishment project, as not only are the units highly efficient, but they also offer an incredibly neat and tidy install.”

The ReCooler HP design removes the need for an additional chiller, condenser or boiler, which consequently eliminates the requirement for any interconnecting pipework. This was an especially important feature for the Royal Northern College of Music, as Elaine explained: “One of the ReCooler HP units was sited on a rooftop garden area, which is regularly used by staff and students at the College. Running lengths of pipework across the roof would have been unsightly and made access difficult, which further cemented the ReCooler HP unit as an excellent choice for this project.”

An automatic swing door operator from Gilgen Door Systems has become one of the first of its kind to be independently tested and approved for use on fire doors. The Gilgen FD 20 swing door operator recently passed stringent fire safety tests through Exova Warringtonfire, one of the World’s leading fire test specialists. The tests examined the resistance of the operator when fitted to fire doors exposed to extreme fire and heat, up to 1000°c. Following successful tests the FD 20 was approved for use on timber fire door sets providing up to 2 hours protection and metal fire door sets providing up to 1 hour protection, thereby meeting the requirements of BS EN 1634-1:2014 regulations. The new FD 20 is one of the most powerful and versatile on the market capable of automating a wide range of doors up to 250KG.

From April 2013 new installations of power operated doors have to comply with European Standard EN16005. The standard is concerned with safety of power operated doors and says that where there is a finger entrapment risk at the hingeside of the door, protection must be fitted from finished floor level to a minimum height of 2 metres. The tried and tested range of finger protection devices from Strand Hardware now includes a version of the original FP200 Finger Protector at 2015mm to satisfy the requirements of EN16005.
