Hunter Douglas Hunter Douglas showcases innovation at world class CEMAST development

A key element of the multi-million pound regeneration project at the Daedalus airfield in Hampshire is CEMAST Fareham - Centre for Engineering and Manufacturing Advanced Skills - for Fareham College. The state-of-the-art centre, designed by architects Perkins Ogden, features 670m2 of the Hunter Douglas solid wood linear open ceiling system in fire treated Siberian Larch. This has been installed by contractor Broadsword Projects in three different widths - 70mm, 92mm and 114mm. A further 455m2 solid wood linear open system in Siberian Larch, fully treated for external application, was also installed under the striking canopy that welcomes visitors to CEMAST.

Pop Up Power Supplies specified at Chelsea Football Club

Pop Up Power Supplies recently installed nine retractable service power units within the stadium arena at Chelsea Football Club. The half tonne units are buried out of site beneath the perimeter of the pitch and are raised out of the ground when required. Chelsea Technical Services Team needed a power solution to enable the ground staff to power their specialist hydroponic equipment to nurture the growth of the pitch. The solution was Pop Up Power retractable service units. The cabling was provided by YESS. The Chelsea ground staff now have access to multiple 63 A and 32 A TPN waterproof power feeds. The cabling and power units were installed and commissioned by Springfield Engineers over a 6 week time frame which was ahead of schedule. Pop Up Power also supply electricity through Inground Units with flip top lids and Bollards in a variety of designs to suit the surroundings.

Copper conflagration

Visitors approaching Żory in Poland are greeted by a dramatic, copper exhibition pavilion in the form of dancing flames –referencing the city’s historical links with fire and its Festival of Fire that continues to this day. The sculptural design of the new pavilion, by architects OVO Grabczewscy Architekci (www.ovograbczewscy.pl), was inspired by an irregularly shaped building area resulting from below-ground infrastructure and other constraints on its prominent site. Three independent walls, each clad in crisply detailed strips of Aurubis’ Nordic Standard copper, interact to create the ‘fire’, separated by fully glazed entrances. Copper also covers several internal wall surfaces, alongside exposed concrete. The Museum of Fire will showcase and promote Żory to newcomers, tourists, partners and investors.

The new Hungry Horse pub in Brislington, Bristol achieves a ‘very good’ BREEAM rating and a reduction in carbon emissions from the notional building design having opted for Redland Ministonewold Solar PV tiles. Redland’s Ministonewold PV tiles are designed for performance and ease of installation and blend in beautifully with the built environment. One hundred square metres of PV was specified for the project. Craig Shepherd at King Associates, explained: “Planning conditions stated a need for a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions from the notional building and this was nearly all achieved through the PV cells. Aesthetics were also a key element so we’re pleased with the outcome.”

Beam smoke detectors the right choice for Peterborough warehouse

Illumino Ignis has selected FFE’s Fireray 5000 infra-red beam smoke detectors to protect its Peterborough warehouse. Infrared beam smoke detectors provide wide area detection and are used when it is impractical, inappropriate or not cost effective to use traditional point-type detectors. They are ideally suited to large interiors with high ceilings, such as warehouses, as they enable coverage of a large area at minimal cost. The motorised, reflective, auto aligning Fireray 5000 can be installed with up to two detector heads per system, saving on installation time and costs. In addition, each system controller houses two pairs of fire and fault relays.

New energy-from-waste plant demonstrates Promat’s protection abilities

The ability of Promat VERMICULUX to withstand the effects of moisture has led to this lightweight fire protection board being specified for the new Trident Park Energyfrom-Waste (EfW) plant in Cardiff. Initially, 20mm thick Promat VERMICULUX boards were specified to provide 60 minutes of fire protection for 360m2 of roof support columns at the plant. Promat VERMICULUX was then considered for use on other parts of the building, where 3 and 4 hour fire protection was required in locations where the recycling processes would create a moisture-laden atmosphere inside the building. Promat VERMICULUX is a lightweight non-combustible low density calcium silicate board.

Using flushglaze modular rooflights for a positive work environment

The McGrath Centre is a recent project build undertaken within the grounds of St Catharine’s college in Cambridge. The multi-purpose building features Glazing Vision’s Flushglaze modular rooflight, which addressed the requirement for enhanced light and space. Glazing Vision designed and manufactured a high specification bespoke shaped modular Flushglaze rooflight which was installed above the auditorium, significantly increasing the amount of natural light that enters the building. Okalux glass was used which features insulated glass elements containing ‘capillary tubes’ in the cavities designed to break up incident daylight and diffuse it throughout the interior of the building.

One of the UK’s leading fire protection contractors has again turned to Promat UK to provide a passive fire protection solution for a new Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) facility in Oxfordshire. IPCL’s Sales Director, Steve McAllister, said: “This project called for high specification protection and so Promat VERMICULUX was an obvious choice. Promat was the only manufacturer that was comfortable with us using their board to protect the cold-rolled steel sections which feature in some parts of the plant. Interpave has published a new edition of its ‘SuDS + Permeable Paving Today’ guide, reviewing the latest government measures for implementation of Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) from April. REHAU Nordic Design Plus replicates timber in renovated cottage

REHAU’s highly efficient, flush fitting Nordic Design Plus window system is designed for two quite distinct market sectors – contemporary new build and traditional timber replacement. The homeowner wanted thermally efficient, low maintenance alternatives and the REHAU Nordic Design Plus system with its 120mm depth frame and its flush fitting 67mm sash proved the perfect choice. Seven windows have been installed, all of which are triple glazed with U-Values of less than 1.0 W/m2K. The Gulbenkien Café at Kent University.

After the discovery of severe subfloor moisture within the Gulbenkien Café at Kent University, a UZIN system was chosen to install the new flooring and provide a long term solution. The initial project was to replace the existing vinyl floor coverings in the cafe as bubbles had appeared in certain areas. The flooring contractor, SW Flooring removed the existing floor coverings, and it became apparent that there was a moisture problem with the subfloor. SW Flooring was also presented with a variety of subfloors, ranging from paving slabs, adjoining timber sections, ceramic tiles and screed. The work also had to be undertaken out of normal working hours, so that the cafe could stay operational during the day, to serve students and staff members. SW Flooring therefore needed high quality products and service from a manufacturer that instilled them with confidence. SW Flooring had a very good relationship with the UZIN technical team and together helped create a specification for the project.

Remmers Industrial Flooring System Earns it’s Stripes

Remmers Industrial Flooring Systems have been used extensively as part of an expansion project to double the size of the manufacturing area at the Promat BD warehouse. Capeland Industrial Flooring were contracted to install 1800m2 of Remmers flooring system to the new extension that was being built to create additional warehouse space, as well as a requirement for 1200m2 of flooring to the existing machining area which was over 10 years old. It was decided that the new, more durable flooring being applied in the extended building, would also be implemented to the existing building with a new finish within the whole warehouse area. The flooring needed to be durable, non-slip and resistant to oils whilst the warehouse floor required a hard-wearing, smooth finish suitable for fork-lift traffic and incorporating a DPM as it was being laid over freshly applied concrete.

The right treatment to keep urgent care unit looking good

Yeoman Shield have recently supplied and installed wall and door protection in the new Urgent Care Unit at Halton Hospital Runcorn. The unit will be busy catering for people in the Runcorn area and is hailed as a one stop shop offering an alternative to A&E for a range of minor injuries and urgent medical care. Yeoman Shield products were installed by their directly employed fixing team to the corridors and cubicle areas in the unit. Guardian Handrail was fitted to protect the walls along the corridors and waiting areas in Aqua Blue with an attractive contrasting insert strip in Mid Grey. An Ultra 60 Protection Rail, also in Aqua Blue, was included at low level to protect the skirting and wall from damage which can be caused at this height from wheelchairs and trolleys. Some of the doors in the unit required replacement and Yeoman Shield fire rated door protection panels and door edge protectors were fitted to all doors to protect from costly damage reoccurring.

A prestigious headquarters building has been created within the stylish Harley Street Conservation Area in central London with the help of Crittall Corporate W20 windows both inside and out.
