The Ultimetal fabric with the high levels of solar refl ectance and low levels of emissivity a orded by its metallised coating provide industry leading levels of shading performance. The 50+ years’ experience of weaving glass-fi bre based shading fabrics producing the highest levels of performance from the thinnest of materials. The Ultimetal fabric is less than one quarter of a millimetre thick, permitting a blind of over 3.0 metres in height to be stored in a cassette of less than 55mm square. Powder coated to match the window frames, the blinds become almost invisible.

Light transmission levels for the fabric in single figures can remove glare, improving workspaces and comfort zones alike. Solar reflectance (Rs) of over 70% can reduce heat gain through the glass by 25%, 40% to over 50% dependant on glass properties. The blinds also improve the insulation of the window by 15%, 20%, 30% or more, reducing temperature loss.

Construction remains at a crossroads at present. Despite Government efforts to stimulate housebuilding, the overall picture for the industry is not looking so positive.

This is down to a number of factors, not least the triggering of Article 50 and the proper start of the Brexit programme. There is also the on-going issue of the rising cost of raw materials.

The most recent ONS figures show that construction output in January fell but rose compared with one year earlier. In addition, new orders in Q4 were 2.8% lower than Q3 and flat compared to a year ago.

Rebecca Larkin, Senior Economist at the Construction Products Association, commented the construction new orders data from the ONS suggests that there may be continued weakness in activity in some sectors during 2017.

“Commercial new orders tailed off in the second half of 2016 and in Q4 were 10.6% lower than in Q3 and fell 24.1% from a

year ago, and new orders in the industrial sector were the lowest in two years. Building work in both sectors requires a large up-front investment for a long-term rate of return and it appears decisionmaking has been clouded by a rise in economic uncertainty.

“As echoed in our forecasts, output during 2017 will be driven by higher orders for housing – both private and public – as well as infrastructure and new public sector buildings such as schools and hospitals.”

Bold and striking Rosso high pressure laminate from Abet Laminati is making a splash in a children’s washing and breakout area at St Helen’s Catholic School in Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex. As part of a beautifully-designed first floor extension by local architects SK Architects, six new classrooms, a studio and a central breakout area has been added in bold and bright colours more than doubling the school’s capacity. The Four Seasons in Tianjin, China is a 45 storey, 259 room hotel in the heart of the city’s Central Business District. Hunter Douglas

Hunter Douglas, the international leader in architectural building products, has helped to transform a lecture theatre at the University of Birmingham.

The overhaul of the Avon Room included Hunter Douglas wall and ceiling panels in real Cherry wood veneer, plus motorised blinds.

However, the panels differed from the usual ceiling system because they were manufactured from engineered solid wood (ESW) and to meet the design brief of the architect, they were produced as six “wings” with 9mm “dummy” circular perforations, which allowed them to be invisibly fixed to the suspension system.

It’s not often that a manufacturer of drainage systems is asked to consider floods of milk within its system designs, but that’s what Polypipe faced in one recent project. When a historic dairy processor in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire needed to expand its delivery yard to cope with rising capacity, Polypipe supplied its market leading large diameter Ridgistorm-XL system to provide long-lasting protection from stormwater and dairy spillages.

Established in 1938, Cotteswold Dairy distributes fresh milk to customers across the country. Following an increase in trade, the Dairy invested heavily to increase the size of its yard to allow for the movement of the delivery fleet. Gloucestershire remains one of most susceptible counties in the UK for flooding, so it was crucial that the yard expansion at Cotteswold Dairy incorporated an appropriate water management solution to store and attenuate any excess surface water on site.

Working closely with the project’s Construction and Cost Management team from Cheltenham based Vitruvius Management Services, the main contractor Smith’s of Gloucester, and Consultant Engineer Infrastructure Design Studio from the early stages of the project, Polypipe supplied more than 250 metres of Ridgistorm-XL piping to feed an engineered attenuation tank. The entire system, which was designed and engineered by Polypipe’s experts in the company’s own manufacturing facility, sits beneath the lorry park and discharges stormwater into a local watercourse.

Council concerns of the perceived risks from SARS and other airborne viruses resulted in an innovative drainage solution at the O2 arena. Studor worked together with ME Engineers and a team at Heriot-Watt University and the solution incorporated Studor Air Admittance Valves (AAVs) coupled with PAPA (Positive Air Pressure Attenuator) units. The PAPA acts like a shock absorber, dissipating pressure waves and stopping them bouncing around the plumbing system, thereby eliminating the need for roof penetrations at the O2. Nottinghamshire Academy Transformation

Cladding Coatings recently worked with the Dukeries Academy to transform the building’s exterior. We showed them a selection of lifelike digital building images giving them an idea of how the transformed buildings would look. From these images we presented a shortlist of three colour options and then attended site to test the colours on the building panels. This free service assisted them to make a decision over the colour scheme and coating finish before work started on site. The coating systems included Rust-Oleum high performance paint systems. Murfil masonry system was applied to pebble dash and masonry which, is high performance and suitable for exterior environments. Kalwall creates healthy shelter

Around eight million people a year are expected to be sheltering under Kalwall at the new West Croydon bus station highlighting the different advantages above its normal use for translucent cladding and rooflighting. Kalwall is much lighter than glass it meant that the supporting structure needed to be less strong and far less chunky. In addition, not only would the shelter be less high but the vertical supports would be less obstructive and open up a better view of the environment including the very attractive church nearby which had previously been blocked from the view of waiting passengers. Hotter shoes start off on the right foot with moisture mapping

The waterproofing on the roof of footwear manufacturer Hotter Shoes’ head office and manufacturing facility in Skelmersdale, West Lancashire had exceeded its serviceable life and begun experiencing significant water ingress, requiring urgent remedial work. Prior to any work commencing on site, Bauder undertook a comprehensive condition and moisture mapping survey of the roof area to help identify the exact extent and locations of water ingress, so that a fully informed decision could then be made to best suit the client’s needs. As a result, the optimal solution was for approved contractor BBR Roofing to strip off the existing deteriorated and delaminating, oxidised bituminous capping sheet and overlay the underlayer with 12,500m2 of Bauder’s high quality, two layer bituminous system Bauderflex. This partial strip allowed for a quick and undisruptive installation, which was important to the client as they wanted the factory below to remain fully operational throughout.

One of the major challenges for this project was the quantity of intricate detailing requirements, which is understandable given the sheer scale of the roof. As part of the necessary works redundant vents and associated frameworks also needed to be removed and replaced prior to new cladding being added to the perimeter and 69 of Bauder’s structural glazed units being expertly fitted to give essential daylight to the building’s interior. Moreover, asbestos was found within the redundant vent apertures and therefore required specialist disposal.

Because the factory workers have variable shift patterns it meant that the roofing works programme had to be regularly changed and all deliveries needed to be timed as not to conflict with vehicles moving in and out of the facility. However, despite the logistical challenges encountered all works were completed on time and to budget much to the delight of the client. Upon completion an additional moisture mapping survey was performed to confirm to the client that the overlay was performing as specified and the roof was now completely watertight.

The resulting overlay solution was expertly installed, without causing any disruption to ongoing work at our facility. Fire Design Solutions King of the Urban Jungle with Lyon Square Appointment

Award-winning smoke ventilation contractor Fire Design Solutions (FDS) has been appointed to provide its systems and expertise for a distinctive new London residential development, from Redrow Homes.

Once complete, Harrow’s Lyon Square will feature over 300 one, two and three-bedroom luxury apartments with direct access to the City, plus a courtyard, underground parking and cycle store.

The appointment will see FDS supply, install and commission Mechanical Smoke Ventilation Systems (MSVS) in eight of the development’s blocks, ensuring that smoke can be quickly extracted from common areas in the event of a fire, providing a means of escape for occupants while also improving access for attending fire fighters.

The MSVS will incorporate a Corridor Environmental System, which will use the existing fans and shafts found in the mechanical systems to remove excess heat during day-to-day operation. To maximise resident comfort, the environmental system will operate at low speed overnight, and acoustic silencers will be fitted to the inlet and outlet of each smoke fan, ensuring that noise is minimised.

The whole system will be monitored via an addressable Corridor Smoke Detection System, including optical smoke detectors, a central concierge panel and sprinkler monitoring, which will feature in two of the development’s blocks.

In addition, FDS has been appointed to supply, install and commission a Thrust Ventilation System for the development’s 3,330m2 single-level car parking area, including induction fans, carbon monoxide (CO) detectors, fire detection systems and a control panel. As well as clearing smoke in the

event of a fire, the induction fans will also operate when CO levels exceed 30 parts per million, ensuring the safety of the car park’s users.

Once work on site is complete, FDS will also ensure that the fire safety systems installed are maintained to the highest possible standard, carrying out two maintenance visits per year and providing a 24-hour callout service.

Speaking on the project, Simon Halfhide, Sales Director at Redrow Homes said: “Harrow is a vibrant,

character-filled area, and Lyon Square will make an excellent addition to the area. Having worked with FDS in the past we’re confident in their abilities to maximise fire safety while also helping us to meet our design aims.”

University library features dramatic Hunter Douglas ceiling

The new £16.1 million Laidlaw Library at the University of Leeds has been enhanced by an 800m2 wood grill ceiling, designed and manufactured by Hunter Douglas. It comprises a pre-assembled grill of five slats each measuring 20mm x 55mm, which were threaded on to black dowels to maintain their structural integrity. ADP Architects wanted an industrial-style finish, so no acoustic materials were used to fill the 55mm gaps between the slats. African Ayous was specified, which was stained white RAL 9010 with water-based paint in the Hunter Douglas factory in The Netherlands before being transported to the UK for installation. The wood also has Flame Delay fire retardant impregnation to achieve Euro Class B-S2-D0 fire resistance.

University extension project includes Hunter Douglas ceiling

A £4.4 million extension at the University of Newcastle’s medical school features a ceiling created and manufactured by Hunter Douglas. The team at the global architectural building products firm used its expert knowledge to advise on the 200m2 open linear wood ceiling in Western Red Cedar for the first floor head of the staircase, the boardroom, and at the top of atrium area of the Ridley Building. Hunter Douglas supplied 111mm module, with each plank measuring 92mm x 15mm. The planks were supplied in different lengths and featured tongue and groove joints at their short ends. The 19mm gap between each plank was infilled with black non-woven felt to provide some acoustic absorption.

Independent tests cast doubt on performance of some trickle vents

Concerned that Greenwood Airvac’s claims for the Equivalent Area (EA) and acoustic performance of some of its ventilation products may be inaccurate, Titon decided to submit Greenwood’s 5000EA ventilator and canopy (as well as Greenwood’s 5000EAW.AC2 and 2500AW.AC2 acoustic variants) and Titon’s own Trimvent Select, SF Xtra and SFX Sound Attenuator trickle vents for independent testing.The independent EA testing, which measures airflow through the product, was conducted by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) and the acoustic testing by SRL Technical Services Ltd.The independent testing substantiated the claimed performance data of the Titon Trimvent Select, SF Xtra and SFX Sound Attenuator trickle vents. When the Greenwood products above were tested for sound attenuation, the results show less attenuation than generally claimed.

Hybrid VRF named Air Conditioning Product of the Year

Mitsubishi Electric is celebrating further industry success after its innovative Hybrid VRF (HVRF) solution was named Air Conditioning Product of the Year at the ACR News Awards 2017.

The backpainted cubicle doors were finished using contrasting wood veneer-faced pilasters to create a striking, highspecification finish while the Concerto integrated duct panel system and modesty screens were both faced in toughened, back-painted glass to match the cubicle doors.

Another office refurbishment project, this time on Wigmore Street, saw Washroom craft unique, fully bespoke washrooms manufactured to meet the architect’s exact design. A key

feature of this was the full height fully integrated wall cladding system along with the glass partitions and full height glass faced Alto Kristalla toilet cubicles both manufactured with acid etch mirror to the face adding to the bespoke design.

Ceralsio is a beautiful, hard-wearing and versatile range of porcelain surfaces available in 12mm thickness for a slim vanity top, 10mm for flooring and 6mm for wall cladding. Totally impermeable, all 27 colours (in a natural, polished or textured finish) are completely stain and scratch resistant, very thermally stable and shock resistant. Similarly, CRL quartz is a beautiful, hard-wearing engineered quartz stone that has superior strength and durability and is resistant to scratches and stains, while being extremely easy to clean. It is available in 32 colours, with a polished finish and in thicknesses of 20mm and 30m. The smaller chamber will bend glass from 5mm to 12mm thick to a maximum size of 2850mm x 1000mm bent and with the following minimum radii 5mm, 6mm = 450mm

The large chamber will bend glass from 6mm to 19mm thick to a maximum size of 2850mm x 3600mm bent and with the following minimum radii
