Welcome

Welcome Election promises thin on the ground for industry

W

ith one eye on the General Election next year, the recent Autumn Statement was always likely to be aimed at helping working households and businesses.

Jeremy Hunt highlighted that lower personal and business taxation will play a central role in the Conservative party’s approach for next year’s election and gave more clarity to the Government’s updated approach to boosting growth. “For UK construction product manufacturers, it is the ‘Full Expensing’ announcement that will resonate most with them,” said Construction Products Association Economics Director, Noble Francis. “CPA was a key part of the letter calling for this measure to be made permanent and is pleased to see this confirmed today. This will allow companies to invest in the UK to reduce their tax by up to 25p for every £1 they spend on plant and machinery. “While these announcements are helpful, the Chancellor could have gone further with industrial policy by providing a clearer strategy on key growth areas. Equally, more could be done on housing supply and home buying, as well as energy efficiency in housing such as introducing a green stamp duty.

“While the announcements on improving infrastructure delivery are welcome, how effectively they will translate into reality on the ground is yet to be seen. The Government published a policy paper ‘Getting Great Britain building again: Speeding up infrastructure delivery’, which demonstrates that it finally understands the difficulties associated with delivering major infrastructure projects. “It is disappointing, however, that Government hasn’t published an updated National Infrastructure and Government Construction Pipeline since September 2021 and announced in the Autumn Statement that there also won’t be a revised National Infrastructure Strategy until next year. This lack of certainty over the project pipeline means that it is difficult for all firms in the construction supply chain to justify signing-off significant new investments in skills and capacity, especially after all the Government announcements of infrastructure projects being paused, delayed and cancelled this year. “This Autumn Statement marks a step in the right direction from Government for the construction industry, but how much of it is electioneering as opposed to real action is not yet clear.”

No confidence Government will deliver hospital building promises The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has no confidence that Government will deliver the new hospitals it promised. In a highly critical report, the PAC voices extreme concern at the New Hospital Programme’s (NHP) lack of progress, given the prominence and importance of the 2020 commitment to build 40 new hospitals by 2030. Very little has happened from the perspective of patients since the Government’s original commitment. The report warns that it is highly unlikely even to construct the 32 new hospitals that it is now aiming to complete by 2030, after the commitment to build all 40 by then was abandoned in May. The PAC is calling for the Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC) to urgently examine how the NHP can be made to deliver some tangible results for patients. The report also makes a number of recommendations to support swifter action to tackle reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) in hospital buildings. By early 2023, DHSC had identified 41 NHS buildings with RAAC. If rebuilding of the seven hospitals constructed entirely of RAAC is not sped up, some hospitals may have to close before replacements are ready. The NHS had a record maintenance backlog of £10.2bn in 2021-22, and the report finds that the underlying cause of this crisis is the raiding of capital budgets for day-to-day spending. The Government has failed to consider the long-term consequences for services and patient care of diverting billions of pounds in this way. Under-investment in the NHS estate has now resulted in a situation that requires urgent action, and DHSC should not reduce planned capital investment to meet day-to-day needs in future. There is a risk that future hospitals are being designed to be too small. Current plans assume increasing demand for care from

a growing and ageing population can be tackled by high levels of bed occupancy (95%), large reductions in patients’ average length of hospital stay, and a significant, recurring 1.8% per annum transfer of patient care out of hospitals into the community. These assumptions are unrealistic, given the NHS’ high levels of bed occupancy, relatively short average lengths of stay, and great strain on primary and social care. Making these assumptions more realistic is likely to increase the cost of new hospitals and require a further reset of the NHP. But the report finds that there currently appears to be insufficient funding for DHSC to build all the hospitals it plans, to an adequate size, by 2030. Dame Meg Hillier MP, Chair of the Committee, said: “The physical edifice that is the NHS is quite literally crumbling before our eyes. There was nothing inevitable about this heartbreaking crisis. It can be laid squarely at the door of the decision to raid budgets reserved for maintenance and investment in favour of day-to-day spending. The sharp distinction between capital and revenue budgets exists for a reason. We are now seeing the consequences of this shorttermism visited on patients and services.

Foster + Partners to design new centre for Hangzhou Foster + Partners has won the international competition to design a new centre for Hangzhou, the capital of China’s Zhejiang province.

“In such circumstances, then, it is bitterly disappointing to report on the current state of the NHP. Quite aside from the fact that the planned new hospitals risk being too small for future purposes, funding does not even appear to be in place to construct them in time, all underpinned by failures of basic record-keeping and fresh and urgent concerns over RAAC.

The masterplan creates a green and interconnected mixed-use quarter, at the heart of the Yuhang District.

“Though we have no confidence that the NHP will deliver on its current promises, we hope that the recommendations in our report help to get it back on track - for the sake of all citizens who desperately need the NHS to get well soon.”

“Our design stemmed from extensive public consultation - and is all about developing a sustainable new urban quarter, which establishes new connections with nature and makes it a part of people’s everyday lives.”

Gerard Evenden, Head of Studio, Foster + Partners, said: “We are delighted to have won the competition to design a new centre for Hangzhou, a beautiful city with nature at its heart.

MPs warn only 20% of schools estate will be net zero compliant by 2050 The Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) has warned that the Department for Education is not “moving at pace” to deliver its sustainability commitments, undermining its own targets.

for Education to publish urgently detailed plans for the mitigation of likely climate risks to the schools estate. It should also publish a fully-costed plan for the achievement of its sustainability strategy.

The Committee understands that the risks to schools of the effects of climate change – such as flooding, overheating and water scarcity – have not yet been fully grasped in Government.

Environmental Audit Committee Chair, Rt Hon Philip Dunne MP, said: “Education is the public sector’s largest emitter of carbon from buildings, amounting to 37% of all public sector emissions. Therefore, getting a grip and stemming these dangerous emissions is critical for our net zero future. But the Committee is concerned that given the scale of the challenge, the current pace of the work required to meet net zero, lacks urgency.

While schemes such as Climate Action Plans are welcome, EAC is concerned that the availability of sufficient funding could hamper efforts to truly address the effects of climate change on the education estate. In a letter to the Secretary of State for Education, EAC points out that the retrofits required to the estate in order to reach net zero will be a significant and costly undertaking which could amount to an annual cost of £2 billion. While there are wider refits necessary to ensure student safety, such as through replacing RAAC, EAC recommends that Government’s approach should provide the greatest value for money by addressing sustainability and climate risks alongside these refits. EAC is calling on the Department

“It struck the Committee that while there is some understanding of the dangers climate change poses to schools and colleges in England, not enough is being done to adapt to the risks from flooding, overheating and water scarcity. Making the education estate fit for Net Zero Britain will be a costly and significant undertaking. “There is no time to lose and the Department for Education must urgently publish detailed plans for mitigating risks caused by climate change, and set out how it will deliver its own sustainability strategy.”

Building Safety Act awareness course launched The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) has launched a Building Safety Act Awareness course for built environment professionals.

and representatives from Build UK, we developed this initial BSA awareness course drawing upon our collective knowledge and industry experience”.

The eLearning course, available via the CIOB Academy will provide essential information on the Building Safety Act 2022 to ensure learners are aware of their own and other duty holders’ responsibilities.

The 90-minute online course is structured around four key areas, including an introduction to the Building Safety Act 2022, Building Safety Act legislation, roles and scope, and the ‘golden thread’.

It has been produced by Equans in association with Build UK and their members, including Skanska, Willmott Dixon, RLB, Mace and 3B Training.

Eddie Tuttle, Director of policy, external affairs and research at CIOB, said: “The Building Safety Act is one of the most important pieces of legislation impacting the built environment in a very long time and it is vital people are well informed and able to comply.

Paul Young FCIOB, CIOB trustee and head of operational Excellence at Equans, helped develop the course, which he believes will benefit people across all roles within construction. He said: “We are delighted to work with CIOB to deliver this course which I think offers a proactive, effective way to convey how the new Act applies to industry stakeholders - perfectly complementing the work of in-house compliance teams across the industry. “Going above and beyond statutory compliance, the course showcases why this is the right thing to do and how the Act applies to them in practice, it’s not only those working on higher risk buildings.” “Working with my colleagues from Equans

“A big part of our role here at CIOB is to support our members and the wider industry on adapting to new rules and regulations and to create a built environment which is safe for all. “We hope this new course will help those who aren’t currently up to speed, become more comfortable with what the Building Safety Act means for them.” The course, which is available at the not-forprofit cost of £25 can be accessed on the CIOB academy website Building Safety Act: Awareness - CIOB Academy

New stadium scales the heights The jaw-dropping scale of the steep-tiered south stand at Everton Stadium is visible for the first time following the installation of terracing. Virtually all of the double-stepped concrete terracing units are now in place in the stand, which will eventually house over 13,000 Evertonians. The next major visual change will see blue seats installed in the upper sections, as part of the ongoing programme which has spread across the north stand - and aims to have them in place across the whole upper tier of the bowl by Christmas. Externally, the south stand is also showing off its new façade following the installation of glazing in the second level concourse. The angled panels, which stretch across the entire face of the stand, have been designed to reflect the water from the adjoining Nelson Dock and help tie the stadium into its maritime surroundings.

Project: Faculty of Arts Building University of Warwick Architects: Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios Suppliers: Technal: Interface; Camira; Lacker; Mosa: Planet Partitions; SonaSpray

Award-winning campus building provides modern landmark for city The impressive new faculty of arts building for the University of Warwick brings together the departments and schools of the faculty under a single roof for the first time. Shortlisted for the 2023 Stirling Prize, the project showcases the approach of Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios.

N

estled within the beautifully landscaped campus of the University of Warwick, The Faculty of Arts building unites the Arts and Humanities Faculties. This bright and open space has become the cultural focus of the university and boasts a prime location on the main route across campus. It is evident that this simple mission became the driving principle behind the entire scheme, to create a vehicle for collaboration and cross-pollination of the arts, whilst drawing inspiration from the site’s unique parkland context. Here the architects have woven these two agendas into one cohesive design concept that has been executed with skill and craft.

12

Project

The building is designed to be approached from all sides. It’s composed of four lightfilled pavilions set around a grand central stair, with each pavilion housing teaching spaces, offices and academic clusters. In place of a traditional atrium at ground level, a sculptural wooden stair spirals around a series of spaces for use as studios, exhibition and event spaces. The design seamlessly fits in with the landscaped surroundings, and provides ample opportunities for serendipitous meetings, collaborations and interaction. In addition to the space itself, two major new art pieces were commissioned for the building. Matthew Raw’s ‘Faith in the Miraculous’ is a bespoke ceramic mural at the entrance of the building that marks the inclusive, collaborative ambition of the space. Raymond Antrobus’ poem entitled ‘Resonance’ is an ode to the building’s landscape setting. The poem is displayed in the foyer. The result of the building is a serene environment – the perfect backdrop for scholarship, teaching and learning that will enrich the experiences of both students and staff. “To significantly reduce the footprint of the building and the volume of materials used, we challenged the number and size of standard academic offices and cellular space described in the brief,” said the architects. “Larger academic studios resulted in a more open building which promotes a sense of invitation and community, encourages higher levels of space use between scheduled teaching, and creates a place that will better serve the Faculty of Arts for years to come. “We were also able to leave out more than 450 metres of internal partitioning, glazed screens, doors and MEP equipment, alongside the associated embodied carbon typical of our lean approach to design.”

QDOS gives kudos to Saniflo Well established in the event sector, QDOS Event Hire provides high quality temporary accommodation, welfare and toilet facilities for some of the UK’s most prestigious events, films and TV shows including Chelsea Flower Show, Goodwood and Wimbledon.

T

he company also provides solutions for smaller events and activities working with event organisers, production companies and sporting bodies to supply high quality cabins, restrooms, modular buildings and washrooms. When it comes to the discharge of black and grey waste, QDOS has opted to use Saniflo pumps and lifting stations to ensure that the bathroom experience is a pleasant one for event attendees. For single WC’s and accessible toilets, the Sanibest Pro is used and provides a durable unit for heavy use, commercial applications. It takes waste from both the WC and a basin and is simple to install, maintain and uninstall at the end of the event. For larger applications, such as toilet blocks and showers, a Sanicubic lifting station takes waste from varied appliances thanks to its multiple connection points and large capacity. In the run up to the festive season QDOS has installed 12 Sanicubics to take the waste away from the WC blocks at Glasgow’s Winterfest. The Sanicubics are installed inside waterproof boxes with plenty of insulation to prevent frost ingression. QDOS has been using Saniflo products for many years and sources them from Richmond’s; a local plumbing merchant. Jonathan Reid is a Regional Manager for QDOS and oversees the installation of event facilities on site; “Using Saniflo products at events is a no-brainer. Our staff are extremely experienced in installing them so it’s a no hassle solution for us and ensures customers have better facilities at an event. Our latest product is a ‘Changing Places’ accessible toilet block. “Saniflo macerators are perfect for these units because we keep the whole modular unit low to the ground for the ramp, but we still have the to pump waste away up and into a holding tank.” For some events the QDOS team is able to connect the Saniflo products to an on-site sewer, but in the

14

majority of cases a storage tank is used which is regularly emptied by a specialist waste removal business. “Alternative solutions, such as composting toilets are useful in low volume applications, but QDOS tends to supply for large scale events, so we need solutions for bigger units and therefore more waste. “The Sanicubic is a standout product for such events – it is powerful enough to cope with frequent use. “We always choose the Saniflo brand because the products are exceptional quality, extremely robust and very powerful. They just don’t let us down.” For more information on Saniflo waste discharge solutions please visit www.saniflo.co.uk or call the in-house technical team on 020 8842 0033 who can advise on rates, flows and volumes. ROCKWOOL® launches whitepaper to support fire safety of multifunctional roofs New whitepaper explores how to identify and mitigate fire risks for flat roofs functioning as additional social or practical spaces of a building, including for solar installations

T

he role of the roof in modern building design has expanded significantly in recent years. Now ROCKWOOL® has published a whitepaper aimed at helping specifiers and roof contractors to consider and plan for possible fire risks arising from flat roofs being used as multifunctional spaces for a variety of social and practical applications, highlighting, for example, the increasing number of solar energy installations. The Flat roofs: The functional fifth façade paper explores the fire safety implications of modern multifunctional roofs and discusses best practices for identifying and mitigating the risks. It also explains the role of the guidance provided in approved documents, including Approved Document B (ADB) for fire safety, and examines potential limitations of such advice for non-standard flat roof circumstances and scenarios. The whitepaper can be downloaded at https://rockwool.link/ffpr “While the use of flat roofs as functional spaces is not a new concept, the practice has become more and more popular in recent

years, especially in increasingly crowded urban areas,” explains Lisa Stephens, Product Manager – Building Envelope, ROCKWOOL UK. “Now, flat roofs don’t just house plant and building services but energy efficiency infrastructure and social spaces too.” With the increasing complexity of the flat roof space in mind, this whitepaper addresses the risks associated with social and commercial uses of flat roofs, considering implications such as greater footfall and the impact of penetrations from building services and cabling on compartmentation and fire resistance.

“The information in the whitepaper will help those involved in the design and installation of flat roofs to make responsible choices when selecting materials to enable a modern flat roof to be multifunctional, safe and longlasting,” says Lisa Stephens. “It offers practical advice to simplify specification whilst going above and beyond legislative requirements.” For more information and to download the whitepaper go to: https://rockwool.link/ffpr ROCKWOOL – Enquiry 8

With the market for solar energy growing rapidly in the UK and Europe, Flat roofs: The functional fifth façade also places a specific focus on the lack of dedicated guidance for solar panels despite evidence that their presence may increase fire risk.

#ACTUK23 inaugural Building Systems UK Accelerating Construction Transformation event Building Systems UK, an enterprise of Tata Steel, held its inaugural ‘Accelerating Construction Transformation’ event #ACTUK23 on 26th October at their Deeside facility.

T

he event brought together over a hundred people, including architects, academics, construction experts, engineers and cladding contractors. Delegates heard keynote speakers on key topics around productivity, digital integration and sustainability and had the chance to tour the on-site manufacturing facility. Barry Rust, Head of Market and Business Development, said event attendees shared Building Systems UK’s strong and cohesive view that construction transformation must accelerate to create a more productive, sustainable and resilient sector. The key question posed by the event was, how? He stressed, it’s not about discussing what we should do in the next ten years, but what we are doing now. We need to walk the walk, not merely talk the talk. During the event, Building Systems UK showcased exactly how it is ‘walking the walk’ by undertaking a Modern Method of Construction (MMC) Live Build in front of delegates, completing a small building within hours. The live demonstration involved the assembly of a roof cassette using Building Systems UK products, including Trisomet insulated roof panels and Trisobuild Seam Profiles. BiPVco’s integrated PV panels provided a source of immediate and sustainable electricity, whilst maintaining a

flush finish to the roof. The Live Build team lowered the roof cassette onto a pre-built structure and concluded the internal fit out to create an outdoor ‘wellness space’ for employees to enjoy. The team also demonstrated digital traceability through a tag and track system, which provides a digital to physical connection through a simple QR code. This delivers accurate traceability, driving optimum product use during the life of a project and enabling reuse at end of life. The Live Build went down exceptionally well with delegates, illustrating the speed that MMC can lend a project, reducing both time on site and construction costs. It provoked an interesting debate and highlighted the crucial role of collaboration throughout the supply chain in driving forward MMC innovation and construction transformation. Something Cat Griffith-Williams, Chief Executive of Constructing Excellence in Wales, touched on during her exceptional opening speech, sharing key examples of collaboration between the construction sector and the Welsh Government to ensure future new build and retrofit projects prioritise sustainability. #ACTUK23 panellist, Trudi Sully, Impact Lead

at Mott MacDonald, also spoke about the importance of collaboration and the Seismic II demonstrator building, a collaborative platform based project which Building Systems UK worked on. Trudi said, “This is one of those great pioneering ambassador projects that demonstrates the opportunity to drive efficiency, reduce emissions, reduce costs and improve delivery.” After speaking in the ‘Delivering Sustainable Outcomes Today’ slot, Matthew WenbanSmith, Director at One World Standards, and contributor to many pioneering projects within the sustainability field over his thirty-year career, described the event as. “Absolutely fantastic.” He discussed the massive step change he’d seen, from sustainability being viewed as ‘extra’ thirty years ago, to becoming absolutely core to businesses. Reflecting on the overall success of the #ACTUK23 event, Jo Evans, Director of Building Systems UK, said it had been an amazing day, bringing together many likeminded people with similar goals. Building Systems UK showcased its commitment to not only supply innovative and sustainable construction products, but to collaborate with the entire supply chain to drive forward the change needed to make truly sustainable projects a reality. Dressed to Impress – a New Look for Commercial Washrooms The trend for black fixtures and fittings is well established in domestic kitchens and bathrooms, and it is now gaining popularity in commercial washrooms. Coordinating black sanitary ware with matching taps and accessories is a guaranteed way to bring style to any washroom, delivering a timeless, classic look, and offering retro-chic with an industrial edge.

1.

H

owever, the challenges facing nondomestic washrooms are very different to the domestic setting. Design is only one element of the specification mix. Other considerations are intensity of use, vandal-resistance, user safety and hygiene. Specialist products are required that will withstand high footfall and cleaning routines. Intensive use and regular cleaning in highly frequented washrooms quickly degrade surfaces. Stainless steel is well-established as a durable and unbreakable alternative to porcelain sanitary ware. Even in its natural state, the surface can withstand any impact from daily use, as well as regular and thorough cleaning. It remains hard and smooth, with reduced dirt retention due to its uniform, non-porous surface. Installing sustainable products To achieve the matte black finish, Teflon® is applied to the stainless steel. Teflon® or PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) is a chemicalresistant material, and one that is already familiar, since it is the same finish found on the pots and pans in domestic kitchens. Its non-stick properties means there is very limited scale adhesion, supporting improved hygiene. Cleaning is easier and more sustainable, requiring less cleaning product. And, since washbasins, WCs and urinals are not subject to the same challenges as kitchen ware i.e., high temperatures or sharp knives, the black finish remains intact over the long term. As the trend for black fixtures and fittings gains in popularity, it is possible to bring a

intensive use while upholding user safety and hygiene standards. In environments subject to intensive use, well-maintained and attractive facilities with easy-to-clean surfaces are more likely to encourage respect and care from users. There is no need to compromise on form or function.

Manufacturers now offer complementary product ranges that coordinate, allowing specifiers to choose their decorative style: adding a black waste for a totally black ensemble, or a chrome-plated waste for a black/chrome mix-and-match look.

The Dulux Decorator Centre Colour Services team makes this a straightforward process with a wide range of expert tools and online resources designed to help you achieve the ideal result. Equally, the Dulux Trade Commercial Colour team can help specifiers create visually striking as well as functional spaces, designed around the specific needs of the occupants. Our mood can instantly be changed depending on whether we step into a room with a calming or energising colour. Colour is often used commercially to achieve a certain effect, for instance blues might be used to create a peaceful environment which could be ideal for concentration and studying. While using brighter colours from

the Dementia Friendly colour palette, that show contrast with adjoining surfaces, are recommended in care homes to ensure surfaces are easily identifiable. Dulux Decorator Centre has numerous colour support options to help find the perfect colours for just a single wall or an entire building. With the Colour Sensor tool, it is quick and easy to match colours on existing surfaces or even to a client’s logo. Whilst the Colour Schemer tool allows specifiers to choose or create sector specific colour schemes and mood boards. Specification solutions for every sector Each sector – whether it is healthcare, retail, residential, education or another – has specific requirements and the necessary decorating products will vary from sector to sector. For example, within a healthcare environment creating a space that supports the needs of patients and staff alike is key. Constant maintenance and redecorating can be disruptive, costly and environmentally impactful, therefore paints with durability, washability and stain resistance are desirable in healthcare spaces. Scrubbable coatings, like that found

within the Dulux Trade Sterishield Diamond Matt are specially formulated with antibacterial properties to help with infection control, in line with appropriate cleaning practices in medical settings. There is no doubt that education spaces can undergo heavy usage and require regular cleaning and maintenance, especially in high traffic areas like hallways and entry ways. Dulux Trade Diamond Matt, for example, is more scuff resistant than standard matt paint meaning it is ideal for busy environments like schools. It also contains unique Stain Repellent Technology which prevents stains from setting in. Walls painted with this emulsion can withstand daily wear and tear, creating longevity and extending maintenance cycles. John Lewis, Kingston Dulux Decorator Centre also offers support for retail spaces. After attending an online webinar hosted by AkzoNobel (Dulux Decorator Centre’s parent company), Nicola Bover, Partner & Design at John Lewis, felt that Dulux Trade Scuffshield Matt would be ideal for the upcoming work planned at the Kingston store. She said: “The new Dulux Trade Scuffshield Matt paint is perfect for our stores.

Not only does the redesign make our interiors more interesting and appealing to our customers, but the resilience of the paint means that it will last longer.” With the support of the Dulux Decorator Centre team – headed up by Jayne Roughan, National Sector Manager – John Lewis Kingston was able to enhance the link bridge between two internal sides of the store with a striking shade of blue: Heritage Deep Ultramarine. The Dulux Decorator Centre team assisted with the specification and supply of the paint. To minimise disruption and risk to building occupants, it was important for the redecoration work to take place overnight. As such, the Dulux Decorator Centre team – including technical support and specification experts and those at the East Molesey branch – ensured that the product was delivered on time and in line with project timescales. Bover continued, “The team at Dulux Decorator Centre were incredibly helpful when we looked to redesign using their paint. “They listened carefully to what we said we needed from a visual point of view, and how we wanted our store to operate. “But most importantly, we felt they really took on board how we wanted our customers

to feel and the experience they have in the shop. We’re renowned for our service, quality and attention to detail - from our staff to the buildings we work in - so it’s important that our suppliers understand that. “As a result, Jayne and her team gave us superb advice about how to optimise our design through the specification and

Wetherby Win with Zero Energy Bill Modular Project One of the UK’s first zero carbon developments has scooped a prestigious industry award. Standing out with an innovative Modular Façade System from Wetherby Building Systems ltd.

T

he 153-home shared ownership development in Stanford-le-Hope, Essex has been delivered, including four impressive “Zero Energy Bill” homes. This stood out to the judges against a wide range of exceptional projects for it’s work in creating the UK’s first zero carbon off site construction developments. At a time when so many residents are experiencing fuel poverty, this forward-thinking project will eliminate the worry with its “Zero Energy Bill” homes. The properties that were built in a modular factory setting in North Yorkshire, included two Wetherby Modular Façade Systems that had the majority of the system installed in the factory, prior to being transported to the Essex site for the finishing touches. Wetherby’s technically approved and certified Modular EWI systems can provide energy efficient solutions to any units built offsite, while the thin-coat renders and brick slip cladding can all be applied either in a factory prior to site delivery or after the modules have been finally positioned on-site. The Wetherby Modular System consisted of two variations used on this project. The first comprises 110mm High Density Enhanced EPS with clay brick slips. The insulation board has a unique tongue and groove interlocking configuration, designed on larger high density EPS insulation boards (1200mm x 1200mm). This significantly reduces boarding installation times while offering superior strength, high levels of impact resistance

and protection against water ingress. The insulation boards are ribbed which provided the course for the 14mm brick slips in colour Light Red Multi Stock. Adhesive is applied to the boards and the brick slips are pressed firmly into place between the ridges ensuring the brick slips can be accurately placed in line and level.

This method reduces application times and the need for skilled labour. Once set, pointing was completed using a naturalcoloured pointing mortar, in the traditional manner. For the render variation, the system used a 130mm Enhanced EPS board which was finished with Wetherby Four Seasons Silicone Render, also known as 4S. Four Seasons is a premium silicone render which has a quicker curing time than a standard render finish. 0500N and 0505 B20G were selected for as the chosen render colours to provide a bright and clean contrast to the red tone brick slips. This was a successful project and a thoroughly deserved win. Expert judges stated that the project was chosen because of such an impressive demonstration the role EWI can play in supporting sustainable, offsite construction. Wetherby Building Systems continue to be a trusted market leader for the UK & Ireland in the supply of innovative EWI systems. Promat

Promat puts D Interiors in the fast lane for high quality fire protection When a high-profile new car showroom in Somerset needed the very best in fire protection within a tight timeframe, D interiors turned to Promat to help with both premium products and expert advice.

Promat

for key parts of the building. To ensure D Interiors had the full capabilities to complete installation efficiently and to the high standard demanded, Promat also implemented a product training programme led by its experts. Dean Newman at D Interiors concludes: “We were really pleased not only with the product quality from Promat but also the level of technical support and training we received.

D

to identify the most suitable systems and products throughout the facility, that would ensure work could be completed on time and without compromising quality.

There are several potential fire hazards in a car showroom environment. With highly flammable fuels such as petrol, solvents, paints, and engine oils on site, there is a high risk of these igniting because of electrical or mechanical issues. Without adequate fire protection measures, a fire can spread quickly and cause significant damage to the cars and the showroom itself, posing a threat to the safety of employees and customers.

Dean Newman, Managing Director at drylining contractor D Interiors Ltd says: “This is a flagship premises for Dick Lovett, and they were understandably keen that the visual impact of the building was achieved whilst adhering to the highest standards of fire protection. We were also presented with an extremely tight time frame with the client wanting the showroom to open as soon as possible. This meant that technical expertise would be just as important as product performance, so we engaged Promat given our positive experiences working with them in the past.”

With a tight deadline for the new showroom to open, an expert approach was needed

Given the high level of protection required the team recommended using PROMATECT®-XW

ick Lovett is one of the leading premium car dealerships in the Southwest. When planning its new state-of-the-art BMW showroom and workshop in Melksham, the company wanted to ensure that the fire protection systems installed were of the same high standard as the luxury cars it would house.

28

“Having technical detailing provided by the manufacturer, backed by training where required, is so important and ensures that the products that our experts are fitting will perform as required. Ultimately, this meant we could complete our work within the tight schedule without holding up the opening of the new showroom.” Promat Specification Manager, Paul Williams said: “Our relationship with D Interiors spans across many people within their organisation and has been fostered by working together on previous projects. In this instance, the sequential programme meant the building would not be weathertight during the installation of the fire protection and so Promatect® XW enabled that programme to remain on track. “There were some complex detailing requirements and unforeseen on-site scenarios that needed to be resolved and so our agility in terms of visiting site regularly to find solutions and support D Interiors meant the programme remained on track and the installation went smoothly.” >>

Schöck choreographs bespoke canopy at Sadler’s Wells East A cantilevered canopy runs the length of the frontage and is designed to carry a precast green roof – which presented a number of design and structural challenges.

1

The cantilever beams, aligned with internal supporting beams, allow the Isokorb rods to penetrate far enough into the structure to distribute the demanding loads. In addition, it was necessary to consider bomb blast loading which introduced uplift forces. So the design had to accommodate loads in both positive and negative directions for both moment and shear.

2

E

nhanced by the saw-tooth roof design, reflecting the industrial heritage of the site, Sadler’s Wells East will join the cultural heritage of the East Bank development at Stratford, when the new dance theatre opens at London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in 2024. The design has many distinctive features, but a major focal point is the cantilevered canopy. A bespoke solution from Schöck The canopy is 51m long with very high support loadings, carried by the end profile of the in-situ RC cantilever beams – each 500mm wide x 950mm deep, with a cantilever of 4.6m. The span between the beams is 4.2m with 12 beams along the canopy length. In the normal permanent condition the moment and shear loads were 900kNm and 360kN respectively. Due to the complexity of the loads and arrangement of the bespoke Schöck Isokorb elements required to transfer such high forces into a relatively small concrete beam section, the support rods were designed using Finite Element Software.

32

Deflection and natural fequency Tight deflection requirements and natural frequency had to be overcome too and the detailing was again calculated using Finite Element Software. The contractor and design teams providing values for both long-term deflection and dead load deflection only, which determined the amount of precamber required during construction. This was a challenging section to calculate, due to the additional support factor of the raked end which sits on a rigid wall. Expansion and contraction issues as well The length of the main canopy and size of the rods required to transfer the main forces, meant that thermal stresses would be caused by the expansion and contraction of the external concrete. Expansion joints therefore had to be introduced at every 3

third beam (approximately 8.4m centres) which carry the load from one set of precast canopy sections onto the supporting beam. Here Schöck incorporated its new heavy-duty Stacon shear force dowel type SLD. This new dowel is a uniquely compact product and as the anchoring bodies have been reduced in size, it has the advantage of enabling higher loads to be installed in thinner slabs and walls, optimising on-site reinforcement. Totally verifiable performance The dependable and fully compliant Schöck Isokorb range helps projects meet full compliance with the necessary UK Building Regulations. There are solutions for concrete-to concrete, concrete-to-steel, steel-to-steel, renovation projects – and even a maintenance free alternative to wrapped parapets. All products have the security of independent BBA Certification, which provides NHBC approval. Also, the new Stacon dowel has been awarded UK Technical Assessment (UKTA) along with fire protection classification R 120. Schöck – Enquiry 22 Images: 1. First, the insulation material was fixed to the building’s exterior using metal brackets. CUPACLAD® 101 horizontal profiles were installed followed by the 40x20cm natural slates, in a 7.65mm thickness. These were fixed horizontally using self-drilling screws, which are invisible post-application to ensure that the overall design and aesthetic is not impacted. Now complete, the dark cladding provides an effective contrast with the glass and render sections of the building to deliver a strong overall aesthetic with striking impact. CUPA – Enquiry 26

HeartFelt modular ceiling and wall system wins over the DFB Hunter Douglas scored a win when its award-winning HeartFelt® felt ceiling system was installed in the new German Football Association (Deutscher Fußball-Bund – DFB) campus in Frankfurt am Main.

T

he architectural firm kadawittfeldarchitektur specified HeartFelt® in the DFB offices as a modular ceiling system and in the press room as a linear wall system, totalling 1200m2 as part of the 150 million euro campus project.

architects and designers across the world have chosen the award-winning system for their projects.

The grey 7596 felt panels were specified first for the ceilings of the office areas and hallways of the academy, but after seeing the results the architect went on to select it as a wall covering in the press room. It was chosen for its key characteristics of acoustics and aesthetics.

The HeartFelt® collection now includes linear ceiling and wall systems available in round and square profiles, a baffle acoustic ceiling system, the origami ceiling system based on folding technology, the multipanel ceiling system with new panel sizes and the PareauLux climate ceiling.

Lars Junold, project manager at kadawittfeldarchitektur, added: “The HeartFelt® system allows panels to be installed not only horizontally on the ceiling, but also as vertical wall cladding. This vertical structure on the wall was particularly interesting for us as it resulted in a great spatial result.” Hunter Douglas Architectural launched HeartFelt® in 2017 and since then,

Style divides space again for prestigious venues facility Having previously divided the 1st floor conference facility when etc.venues initially moved into 155 Bishopsgate, London, Style was asked to add further space flexibility when the company recently expanded into the sizeable 2nd floor area. Working with Synergy Architects, and contractor, KPS Partnership Style recommended installing a single, 21 metre long Dorma Huppe Variflex moveable wall down the length of the main conference space. A further five Variflex walls were then installed evenly spaced throughout the room, allowing individual meeting rooms to be created as demand dictates. Maintaining natural light throughout the space, pass-doors are all fully glazed, with an adjacent panel also being fully glazed in each instance. For added wow factor, solid panels feature eye-catching graphics. The new Variflex moveable wall arrangement enables etc.venues to host an extensive combination of meetings by closing off each area into smaller meeting rooms, opening up multiple rooms into one larger meeting area or moving all walls away to create a vast open plan conference/exhibition space. With Style prioritising acoustic integrity throughout the installation process, coupled with semi-automatic operation that ensures the seals between the panels are expanded to exactly the right pressure every time, a 52dB Rw acoustic rating is achieved. Nordic Copper – the inside story We have seen a dramatic change from copper’s traditional place in roofing historic buildings to a thoroughly modern external skin for contemporary architecture. But its role as an interior surfacing material is growing as well, with a surprising diversity of natural colours, patterns and textures with the Nordic Copper ranges from Aurubis.

1

the integrity of copper as a natural, living material and are not coatings or paint. The processes involved are very similar to those taking place naturally outside and utilise copper mineral compounds, not alien chemical actions. Living Material These processes enable designers to determine both the colour and intensity of Nordic Brown pre-oxidised copper or Nordic Green, Nordic Blue and Nordic Turquoise patinas for each project from the start. As well as a solid patina colour, other intensities can be created revealing some of the dark oxidised background material as ‘living’ surfaces. Alloys of copper have also grown in popularity. They include Nordic Bronze, an alloy of copper and tin which gradually changes to a dark chocolate brown when used outside, and Nordic Brass, which can also be supplied pre-weathered. An innovative alloy of copper with aluminium and zinc – Nordic Royal – enjoys a rich, golden through-colour which remains very stable, just developing a matt surface, but no patination, over time. Nordic Décor – an Extra Dimension Most recently, these copper surfaces and alloys have been made available with the Nordic Décor range of mechanically applied surface treatments, adding an

C

opper and its alloys – such as brass and bronze – enjoy a long heritage as the metals of choice for interior design, contributing a distinctive tactility to door furniture and handrails, and a visual richness to lighting and other fittings, championed by leading designers. But, increasingly, they are being applied as high-quality finishes for walls, doors, ceilings, stairs and elevators, highlight surfaces, bars and counters, exploiting the materials’ unique performance characteristics. Safe Surfaces Particularly important today, copper’s inherent antimicrobial qualities make it ideal for touch surfaces. It is also non-toxic and safe to handle, as well as non-brittle and predictable to work. With

40

a melting point of 1083˚C and ‘A1 (noncombustible material)’ fire classification to EN 13501-1, copper is inherently firesafe and, therefore, rated ‘Class 0’ surface spread of flame, making it suitable for wall and ceiling surfaces in all areas.

2

But there is more to architectural copper than meets the eye, particularly in terms of recyclability, sustainability and long-term performance – wherever it is used. Nordic Copper factory-applied surface treatments can provide straightaway the natural oxidisation and patination of copper that develops over time in the external environment to selected levels, and these can be used internally as well as outside. Essentially, they bring forward the environmental changes without taking away

between outside and in, with external copper cladding simply continuing past fully-glazed walls. extra dimension. These latest developments in abraded and embossed surface treatments are particularly suited to interior design, adding another level of close-up visual richness, texture and tactility.

Again, this does not generally apply to interior applications and designers should understand and, indeed, celebrate the divergent developments of internal and external copper.

Nordic Décor includes embossing to provide regular patterns of raised or recessed forms, some also abraded to reveal highlights of the base material colour for additional design effects.

pressed to provide surface textures and modulation. It can also be perforated, expanded or woven as mesh giving varying degrees of transparency.

New Forms of Copper Apart from traditionally-jointed, rolled material supported by a substrate, various other forms of Nordic Copper are increasingly being explored by innovative designers.

When used internally, of course Nordic Copper can be used in an even wider range of forms and systems, free from the constraints of weather-proof detailing. One particular recurring architectural theme is material continuity, blurring the boundaries

Originally developed in collaboration with leading colour consultant, Vanessa Konig, the Matrix wall tile collection from Parkside Architectural Tiles features 23 colours, available in matt and gloss finish, with matching trims and grouts. The collection has now been refreshed to include four trending colours.

The basins are integrated into a mutipurpose vanity that houses bronze PVD finish Radius taps, sensor soap dispensers and slim wall-mounted hand dryers.

Accompanied by matching straight-edge trims and coloured grout, Matrix colours can be selected in matt or gloss for a beautifully coordinated look. Tiles are available in 200mm and 148mm square, and 98x198mm. Designs can use the different formats and gloss levels to create a striking finish in solid colour or in complementing tones from across the range.

Sustainable Grass Paving With increased demand for permeable paving to address issues of SUDS, many driveways, access roads and car parks are now adopting grass paving alternatives.

W

ith more than 50 years of grass paving installations, the Grass Concrete policy is to guide clients to the most appropriate system: in-situconcrete, pre-cast concrete or plastic systems. This strict fit for purpose policy is the key to achieving sustainability in any construction project, with careful consideration of grass

paving types, particularly when likely to be subjected to frequent traffic and weights of vehicles. For regular trafficked areas and load bearing Grasscrete offers a cast on-site system and Grassblock comes in prefabricated blocks, both offering the heavyduty concrete under structure necessary for regular trafficking in car parking areas.

Incorporating Sustainable Urban Drainage using grass permeable paving helps mitigate the implications of surface water run-off and its implications for the local storm water network. A grass reinforced systems can permeate at up to 90% the rate of natural grass a safe lag time can be achieved. Storing water within the system with low risk of ponding, until the ground can naturally re-charge is a significant benefit. Lag time is beneficial in the prevention of flooding and can be extended by introducing an underlying drainage blanket across the full extent of the paved area.

Vertical opportunities with creative structural integrity

Sustainable grass cover is best achieved by a system that promotes permeability. The depth and shape of the soil pockets therefore has a critical part to play. Both Grasscrete and Grassblock offer substantial capacity for soils and root systems to promote maximum grass coverage.

Refurbished services create a green haven for motorists As part of the final stages to the long-running A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon improvement scheme, Cambridge motorway services, run by Extra MSA, underwent a complete refurbishment scheme that was completed summer 2022.

T

he landscape improvements included re-contouring of the land, new EV charging points, and double the parking capacity for all vehicle types, from cars, motorhomes and caravans, to coaches and HGVs. The project included both hard and soft landscaping, with the large outdoor seating area in front of the main entrance featuring four trees set within a block paving and resin bound mixed surface. It makes for a pleasant area to sit and relax or eat.

Green-tech has been manufacturing its range of Green-tree soil for nearly twenty years, and 270 tonnes of sub-soil and ArborRaft topsoil was supplied for the tree pits. In order to use a friable, organic topsoil underneath the paving, Green-tech supplied ArborRaft geocellular tree pit support system that acts as a sub-base replacement, supporting the paving above from pedestrian, or vehicular traffic, whilst protecting the soft soil below from risk of compaction. Each tree pit contains a strap anchor system to keep the trees stable during the all-important

Mapei systems safeguard future at Northcroft Lido A comprehensive Mapei system – including structural repair and waterproofing products - has been used to renovate the historic Lido at Northcroft Leisure Centre in Newbury.

I

nvestigation works and preparation of the concrete repair specification were carried out by KRP Consulting Engineers for West Berkshire Council; the new facility features a 50-metre Olympic length heated outdoor pool, interactive splash pool and additional changing cubicles with accessible features. Mapei products were supplied by Resapol, with works carried out by Structural Renovations on behalf of Main Contractor, Universal Civils & Build. Mapei was approached in late 2020 by Structural Renovations to put together an outline proposal to repair the Lido. This was developed and detailed discussions were held with KRP Consulting Engineers, with assistance from Olton Structural Consulting, before finalising the proposal. Following extensive consultations with local residents, works commenced last May to save the lido and improve the facility for

future generations. The high performance Mapei specification included products to repair and stabilise the concrete foundation of the lido and to create a new waterproof and watertight surface. The specification comprised: Lamposilex fast set pre-blended mortar, Mapeproof Swell moisture expanding rubber-based hydrophilic sealant, Mapemortar HB R3 repair mortar and Mapeband TPE flexible sealing and waterproofing tape.

The surface build-up was then completed with Topcem fast drying hydraulic binder for screed and Mapelastic Foundation flexible cementitious waterproofing mortar, and Mapeflex PU 45 FT – a rapid-hardening paintable polyurethane sealant. Mapei – Enquiry 49

Space saving insulation for 1970s building

Leviat is delighted to launch their new Industry Insights series, which critically examines a range of topics and issues facing the Construction Industry, and aims to provide clear, informative and educational content to support the growth and development of the sector.

Spacetherm® WL (Wall Liner) insulation from the A. Proctor Group is addressing the need for improving the thermal performance, and helping to reduce heating costs of a 1970s building with limited internal space.

Featuring a whitepaper and in-depth video interviews with thought leaders from across the industry, the series brings clarity to the evolving regulatory landscape and the necessary drivers for change. For more information about ‘Industry Insights by Leviat’ and to view the interviews and download the whitepaper, click here (https://www.leviat.com/en-gb/industryinsights).

The original building, created by the British architectural partnership Benson and Forsyth, is a modestly sized one-bedroom flat. To make the space feel bigger, the architects created a split level, giving the majority of the space to the living areas and compromising on the size of the bedroom. Designer Stefi Orazi from Modernist Estates who lives in the flat explains: “I started researching different insulating materials, but because of the size of the room (it’s about 2.5 x 2.5m), I really couldn’t afford to lose any wall space with regular insulation. I then came across Spacetherm WL made by the A. Proctor Group. This seemed ideal as it’s only 13mm thick, and you can glue it directly onto the wall, plus you can do it yourself and can download the installation guide direct from their website.

Knauf introduces plasterboard recycling scheme Knauf UK and Ireland are pleased to announce their new partnership with Encore Environment to deliver an enhanced waste management service to reduce plasterboard waste. The landmark scheme looks to move towards a circular economy by taking waste plasterboard and reintroducing it to the local supply chain. According to the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP), plasterboard can make up to a third of all waste from a fit out. And with plasterboard banned from landfill, the need to effectively manage this waste is critical. Contractors that use Knauf products and opt into the Take Back Scheme will be connected to local and vetted recycling companies via Encore’s nationwide network. These dedicated skips will be sent to their site and, once filled, are collected and brought to specialised local centres. Knauf – Enquiry 56

The new regulations implemented by the UK government mean that carbon intensive gas boilers will soon be unsuitable for future homes and should be replaced with low-carbon alternatives.

Gaia are delivering the design, supply and installation of wet underfloor heating systems on the ground floor of the residential units, as well as their expert guidance from the concept stage through to delivery and aftercare. “We have extensive experience working with housing developments across the UK and are proud to be providing underfloor heating for this project. It’s great to work with another significant national developer like Taylor Wimpey and we’re looking forward to seeing the completed site” concludes Steven.

Spirotech goes the ‘extra mile’ to meet customer expectations

Space-saving Evomod boilers for one of the UK’s tallest buildings

A District Heating system serving 5,000 homes in St. Ann’s, Nottingham is benefiting from bespoke filters manufactured by Spirotech UK. NCC Enviroenergy approached a number of UK manufacturers to quote on the production of five custom-made demountable dirt separators for five of the district pumping stations serving properties in the area, but only Spirotech was prepared to meet the specification requirements. Enviroenergy, a department within Nottingham City Council’s Environment & Sustainability division, is responsible for delivering the heat and power to homes and businesses across the city. Within the District network are several pumping stations and two core operating systems – a primary distribution network that operates up to a maximum of 140 °C and 11 bar; and a secondary distribution system, which pumps the water around the residential area at 8588°C, in the region of 7-8 bar. Four Evomod 1000kW output boilers from Ideal Heating – Commercial Products have been installed at Beetham Tower in Manchester, which has the distinction of being one of the UK’s tallest buildings outside of London. Manchester based mechanical and electrical contractor Atmostherm, a long standing Ideal Heating – Commercial Products customer, chose Evomod boilers for this site, based on Evomod’s small footprint and modular nature which made locating and installation easier than expected in the small plant room which had restricted access. Available in 250, 500, 750 and 1000kW outputs, the Evomod will achieve an output up to 1MW from a single unit solution together with a minimum footprint that enables the product to be installed where space is limited. Each module provides a maximum of 250kW heat output and will modulate down through a sophisticated control system. At Beetham Tower, four Evomod 1000kW output boilers have been installed by Atmostherm with Plate Heat Exchangers to achieve the appropriate pressure on the output in order to pump the hot water across the entire building. Atmostherm took advantage of Ideal Heating’s free commissioning service on this project, which has been designed to save installers time and money, plus ensures the appliance is correctly commissioned and operating. When used together, underfloor heating and heat pumps can be 40% more efficient than a gas boiler and radiator system. Plus, underfloor heating runs at a lower temperature than radiators, so consumes significantly less energy for the same warmth.

Last year Altro celebrated 40 years of iconic Altro Whiterock with a competition to win your own custom feature wall. Isle of Wight charity Ability Dogs 4 Young People was the worthy winner and now Altro Whiterock Digiclad (Custom) has been used to bring to life wall space in their training centre.

Beauflor Exhibits at London Build Expo Beauflor is exhibiting at London Build Expo to show the construction sector how its flooring collections deliver value and provide unique responses to the challenges of design, installation and use. Throughout the two-days of the show, visitors will be able to find out how solutions like the fasttrack custom designs of Beauflor Create can add value to their construction projects.

Kevin Weatherick from Phoenix Flooring Projects Limited nominated the charity, which trains assistance dogs to enhance the independence of disabled young people and children living on the Isle of Wight. Ability dogs help with physical and mental disabilities including cerebral palsy, autism, diabetes, and epilepsy.

The wall space in the training centre was required to provide a visually engaging backdrop to detail the story of the charity and the support they provide to the local community. This backdrop would also be used for photographic opportunities with fundraisers and charity sponsors. The wall needed to feature a bespoke design, with longevity, and cleanability. Altro Whiterock Digiclad (Custom) was the perfect solution as it’s a custom print option using UV cured inks onto an Altro Whiterock sheet from your photographic image or design. Great for feature walls, logos and to aid with signage.

First UK Mapecrete jointless floor system installed in the UK Mapei UK’s first Mapecrete jointless floor system has been installed at P1 The Plasterers One Stop Shop & Plastering Superstore, in Cheltenham. The seamless finish was installed over the 440m2 floor area, which will be used as new warehouse space. Concrete was supplied by Flowmix and pumped by Max-Pump. Suitable for all environments - from commercial and industrial to residential - the Mapecrete system provided benefits including enhanced durability, reduced maintenance and a fast-track installation. Fibre-reinforced concrete (FRC) jointless slabs represent a significant advancement in concrete technology, offering numerous benefits over traditional reinforced concrete (RC) slabs. The Mapecrete FRC jointless system is based on a shrinkage compensated concrete technology where contraction is compensated by restrained expansion through structural reinforcement. The modular system consists of four Mapei products which work in synergy to create a jointless finish: they include Dynamon XTend W300 N, Mapecure SRA 25, Expancrete, Mapefiber ST42 and Mapecure E30. Whilst RC slabs are jointed to assist in controlling cracking, FRC jointless slabs contain fibres within the concrete mix to enhance performance and reduce cracking and spalling. The slab’s increased durability provides increased load-bearing capacity and greater ability to withstand heavy loads and high traffic. Mapei – Enquiry 62
