Welcome
There remains a fair amount of pessimism surrounding construction at present with political; and economic uncertainty combining to prompt many to paint a gloomy picture.
Add in rising material costs and most recent industry surveys have been fairly downbeat in nature. However, it is always worth casting the net a little wider when it comes to the construction industry to see what others think.
It is heartening, therefore, to see the latest Royal Institute of British Architects’ (RIBA) monthly Future Trends workload index, a tool used by the Institute to measure member’s confidence in the economy, shows architects’ confidence in future work prospects remains stable.
RIBA Executive Director Members, Adrian Dobson, said: “Commentary received this month from our participating practices continues to suggest a broadly stable market for architectural services.
“A number of correspondents have commented that the market for private house extensions remains particularly
buoyant, but that much of this work is financed via remortgaging and is therefore highly sensitive to any correction in house prices.
“At the larger project scale, it seems that infrastructure is likely to continue to be prioritised in terms of public sector capital investment, and sectors such as transport and energy infrastructure are seen as increasingly important by a number of larger practices. There continues to be growing interest in the PRS housing sector as financial institutions begin to become more actively engaged, building upon experience in student housing provision.”

Contemporary copper in Australia Product Highlights
A World Architecture Festival Finalist in 2016, this apartment building designed by SJB, in a prominent Sydney location is defined by its restrained palette of quality materials, including Nordic Copper from Aurubis.
Commanding expansive views over Sydney Harbour, 10 Wylde Street is a 7-storey contemporary building set in an urban fabric originating from early colonial grand residences and the first apartment buildings in Australia. The northern façade elevated above neighbouring buildings is characterised by its transparency and fineness of detailing, with thin metal window framing, slender columns and folded copper edge details. This open elevation is contained by the elongated roman profile brick masonry forms of the other three facades.
Distinctive copper ‘wings’ to the rear façade enable small triangular balconies to project from the monolithic masonry, screening them from the south and directing views towards the city and harbour. A subtle pattern of perforations in the Nordic Standard copper screens provides solar shading and privacy from adjacent buildings. Nordic Standard copper was selected as a natural material that will age gracefully.
Nordic Standard is produced by Aurubis, part of the world’s leading integrated copper group and largest copper recycler. In addition to Nordic Standard, other Aurubis architectural surfaces include Nordic Brown preoxidised copper with either light or dark brown oxidisation that otherwise takes time to develop in the environment. Various Nordic Green and Nordic Blue factory-applied patinas have also been developed with properties and colours based on the same brochantite mineralogy found in natural patinas all over the world.
Aurubis copper alloys include Nordic Brass – now also available pre-weathered – Nordic Bronze and the innovative Nordic Royal with a long-lasting golden colour. Aurubis is part of the world’s leading integrated copper group and largest copper recycler. For more information email: g.bell@aurubis.com or visit: www.aurubis.com/finland/architectural

Using the new software, anodised aluminium panels were manufactured for Thames Archtectural, and installed in Berkeley Homes Victory Pier luxury apartment development in Gillingham, as well as for ambulance bay screen panels at University College Hospital in London. Both projects called for very high open area panels to meet ventilation requirements, whilst retaining striking images and patterns. The Victory Pier panels feature seven different waterbirds along the car park frontage, whilst the UCL installation was based on the architect’s ‘funky trees’ concept. Canal Engineering
Lightweight drains for showers & changing facilties
In the leisure industry a hygienic environment is a high priority. A cleaning regime usually occurs multiple times per day to ensure the environment is up to standard and maintained for their customers and staff using the facilities. Often in larger environments, a considerable amount of cleaning product and water is used to ensure the facilities are properly managed. This amount liquid needs a suitable drainage system to accommodate all of the waste water. In most cases, a lightweight drainage design is chosen, which allows the drain cover to be removed with ease and assist the daily cleaning of the drain channel where build-up of unwanted waste can occur. This allows the operative to remove and dispose of the waste appropriately preventing system blockages and bad smells.

Saving with SuDS External Works
Concrete
Of course, developments need paving – whether for roads, parking, shared spaces or play. But permeable paving also provides an inherent drainage system that requires no additional land take for water storage, treatment or conveyance. It also addresses both flooding and pollution issues by storing and cleaning water runoff at source. This technology eliminates pipework, gulleys and manholes, and generally costs less than conventional drainage and paving.
In fact, concrete block permeable paving can also accept runoff from other impermeable paving and roofs, giving further savings. It can simply infiltrate rainwater falling on it straight into permeable ground, after removing pollutants. But more commonly in the UK, less permeable conditions – such as clay – can reduce infiltration and on brownfield sites existing pollutants may preclude infiltration. Here, permeable paving is used to collect and store water on site during storms, before gradual discharge of some or all water to sewers or watercourses later, thus avoiding surcharging and flooding.
Urban Development
At Riverside Court in Stamford, Lincolnshire – a high-density (106 units/ hectare) town-centre housing scheme with SuDS designed by Robert Bray Associates – most public areas between the buildings are concrete block permeable paving, which also accepts runoff from other paved areas and roofs. In addition to infiltration to the ground, stored and cleaned water also passes from the paving directly into planted rills and canals, enhancing the courtyard environment.
With SuDS schemes, concrete block permeable paving removes waterborne pollution and provides a gradual flow of clean water at the head of the ‘management train’. Water in open SuDS features on the surface can then be used to enhance landscape design and biodiversity. From the rills and canals, any remaining water can eventually flow out into the adjacent River Welland. This SuDS scheme is made up almost entirely of concrete
block permeable paving and eliminates any sewer connections.
Low Cost Drainage
Following over 25 years use, concrete block permeable paving has proved to be a predictable, reliable and lowcost SuDS technique. Its capability to attenuate water flow during rainfall for gradual discharge is well known. But this principle is optimised for greater cost efficiency by considering distinct storage ‘compartments’ of permeable paving using straightforward flow control devices with an orifice – accessible for observation and adjustment if needed – on the outlet.
This technique enables water storage to be strategically deployed around a development within permeable paving compartments, each with a flow control demonstrating compliance to local authorities as part of the SuDS design approval process. It maximises the potential for water to be stored on site beneath paving that is needed anyway, avoiding dedicated water storage structures on valuable land, as well as their associated excavation and construction costs.
Similar techniques maximise storage in permeable paving on sloping sites, using terraces of compartments separated by simple check dams incorporating flow controls. And flow controls can be used to retain water and make the most of available infiltration, so reducing discharge.
Design Freedom
Of course, paved surfaces help to define the character of any development. The growing choice of concrete block permeable paving products available from Interpave manufacturers – with numerous shapes, styles, finishes and colours – allows real design freedom. At the same time, permeable paving can provide a completely level, well-drained, firm and slip-resistance surface accessible to all, without the need for cross-falls, channels, gulleys or other interruptions. Rainwater ‘ponding’ is eliminated, reducing the risk of ice forming on the surface and preventing splashing from standing water.

The specification of a costeffective, long lasting Kalzip standing seam liner roof system, which has excellent thermal efficiency and the ability to resist high wind uplift, provided a minimum design life of 40 years. Kalzip AluPlusPatina pre-weathered roof sheets were specified because it was important that the appearance of the outer roof covering blend in sympathetically with traditional nature of this historic structure. The surface of these stucco embossed matt aluminium sheets is highly resistant to weathering and the additional treatment also significantly reduces light reflection.

Leading sustainable building envelope specialist, Schueco UK, has announced that as a system supplier two more of its popular sliding door systems – the Schueco ASS 70.HI lift/slide door and the Schueco ASS 70 FD folding/sliding door – have been awarded Q Mark Product Certification by Exova BM Trada. Both systems are widely specified right across the UK, being suitable for both commercial projects and the domestic market. Q Mark Product Certification covers a wide range of characteristics including weather performance, mechanical strength, operating forces, corrosion resistance of fittings and PAS 24 security. In addition, the tests certify the doors’ opening and closing performance over 50,000 operating cycles.
As a further assurance of quality, Schueco partner-fabricators with Q Mark Certification have their quality management system annually audited as well as a door security test to prove the products are being consistently and correctly manufactured. Significantly, Q-Marked companies are eligible to bid for projects covered by the police’s Secured by Design initiative. This latter scheme has been in operation for ten years and is regarded as having made a major contribution to reducing the number of burglaries. As such, windows and doors that comply with SBD specifications form part of the front line against unlawful entry and can help to reduce household insurance premiums.

It can also lead to an overheated building, which in turns means higher air-conditioning bills. The challenge for building designers, therefore, is to ensure there is plenty of natural sunlight that does not cause discomfort. Blinds offer the ideal solution because they prevent glare and ensure visual comfort, for example functional roller blinds reduce heat entry by 50-60% and light to less than 5%.

Growing Safely with Kidde Safety, Security & Fire Protection
Kidde customer Bond Housing Group is rapidly expanding its rented homes operation in Lincoln and is one of the founding landlords of the Lincoln Trusted Landlord Scheme. The Group specifies only Kidde products for its ‘Grade D’ fire alarm and CO alarm systems.
Already a multi award-winning supplier of high quality HMO accommodation for over 20 years in North London, Place Group opened its Lincoln office in April 2014. Here it expanded quickly through the establishment of a fully operational letting management and development business – Bond Housing Group Lincoln – with the company already managing assets worth over £9 million.
The company invests in refurbishing period houses in the city centre, offering a range of safe, secure studio-style en-suite bedrooms plus communal kitchens and laundry rooms. Tenant safety is paramount and the company always specifies Kidde’s Firex and Slick ranges of hard-wired, interconnected smoke and heat alarms for BS 5839-6 ‘Grade D’ systems, as well as Kidde carbon monoxide alarms.
Bond Housing Group CEO Rob Hunter commented: “We choose Kidde because there is no second chance to get it right with refurbishment. We want to avoid any costly mistakes that could occur if we specified a less established brand and had to make changes later. Moreover, we know that Kidde will support us in future.”
Bond Housing Group’s most recently completed HMO development in Lincoln – at West Parade – features Kidde’s Slick smoke and heat alarms, as well as the company’s CO alarms. This will be one of the first properties to be inspected and accredited under the city’s new ‘Lincoln Trusted Landlord Scheme’, designed to improve standards of accommodation, management of tenants and neighbourhood relations.
Rob Hunter added: “Bond Housing Group is now one of the leading Lincoln landlords and property developers, with 5 projects in hand at present. We plan to become a PLC by the end of the year”.

Keylex 700 Now Accepts All DIN Cylinder Lockcases
The new Keylex K700L mechanical digital lock will now accommodate all conventional DIN style cylinder lockcase heights.

The new, revised design incorporates a removable mounting pillar to make the Keylex 700L truly universal.
The Keylex 700 series is ideal for all standard duty, high security door installations and on any door where a flexible Euro profile key system is required.

Glazing Vision
Fixed rooflights to meet aesthetic requirements and energy efficiency
Nestled on a tree-lined street of Edwardian homes in West London, this 3-storey private residence is a stunning embodiment of modern architectural design and PassivHaus principles. Glazing Vision’s Flushglaze rooflights were absolutely critical to the design, providing the essential amount of daylight required both to illuminate as well as to heat this eco-friendly home.
Richard Dudzicki Architects (RDA) were keen to ensure that the interior of the house was also stylish and modern, whilst at the same time meeting the rigorous standards for energy efficiency. Concrete was the material of choice – when insulated it retains the heat once it gets warm, and for the internal decor it offers a contemporary aesthetic.
Getting enough light into the rooms of the property was also a major priority for both client and architect; the installation of Glazing Vision’s fixed Flushglaze rooflights contributed significantly to enhancing the light quality and quantity in this property. The largest of the rooflights, over 4m in length, is installed above the entrance and floods the hallway and adjoining living area with daylight. Its minimal internal framework adds to the sense of loft and airiness whilst beautifully complementing the modern glass balustrade of the staircase.

Ric Blenkharn of Bramhall Blenkharn said: “I’m more than happy with the service and products supplied by Neacotheir combination of decking and balustrade has been excellent choice for this development. I’m familiar with the products, having used them on a number of other projects as well as my own home.”

For the architect these Flushglaze rooflights , pointed directly at the light source, also provided excellent access to solar heat gains, whilst the triple glazed panes provided enhanced thermal performance. These were both invaluable benefits and critical to the property’s PassivHaus design.
A worthy winner of the Gold Award at the 2015 London Design Awards and a finalist in the urban category of the 2016 PassivHaus Awards, this Eco-Lodge is a superb example of what can be achieved with PassivHaus certification, where contemporary design and low energy building construction are in perfect synergy.

UltraFloor used for Vodafone store floor refurb in under 8 hours!
UltraFloor Level IT Super30 was chosen by G Harding Flooring to ensure project completion of a Vodafone store floor instalment. The client gave the contractor a timescale of under 1 day to finish the work, so time was of the essence and product performance was the key to success. The existing floor was uplifted and the remaining residues were removed from the concrete substrate, which was then primed ready to be levelled with Level IT Super30. Level IT Super30 is the original ‘level and lay in a day’ formulation which sets to walk on in just 30 minutes and allowing bonded coverings after only 90 minutes was perfect for this project’s extremely tight time constraints! Rapid drying finishing compound, Feather IT was then used to patch repair any blemishes and to improve the levels of the electrical powered floor boxes.

Hunter Douglas was specified for the project, supplying 600m2 of solid wood grill for the reception and atrium of the University of Kent’s new £26 million Sibson Building.
Hunter Douglas provided class O, Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)approved ayous wood, whitewashed panels, 20mm x 80mm slats with 50mm gap, and black fleece was applied to the rear. The complexity of the design came in the orientation of the panels at 45˚, which meant the Express Drylining installation team had to cut all the perimeter panels on site so that the changing angles could be fitted perfectly. Hexparket is delivered with an untreated surface to be finished on site with either a lacquer or oil. Made in Junckers’ most popular timber grade, Harmony, the floor has a natural appearance, few knots and some colour and structural graining variation between the individual tiles. After utilising UZIN’s support to help rectify a long standing issue with a failing floor, MCHFT worked with UZIN and the flooring contractor iFloor Ltd to specify suitable systems for the new building as well as many other refurbishment projects.

Mr Slim R32 models bring advanced benefits at the same price
Mitsubishi Electric has launched of a new range of air conditioning units utilising the new refrigerant R32 which will be available at the same price as the equivalent R410A units.
The R32 Mr Slim Power Inverter split type models are the second product range in the company’s UK line-up to utilise R32 refrigerant – which has a low global warming potential (GWP).
“We have kept the price exactly the same as our current R410A Mr Slim Power Inverter line up as we see this eliminating a big hurdle in the adoption of this new refrigerant, which is an important change to help combat global warming,” explains Carl Dickinson on behalf of the company.
“Anyone planning on using, designing or installing air conditioning in the coming years will now need to take into account the GWP of the system to meet the requirements of the F-Gas Regulations,” adds Dickinson.
In March 2014, the European Parliament passed the 2014 EU F-Gas Regulation legislation with the key objective of reducing F-Gas emissions by 79% between 2015 and 2030. The overall intention is to cut the availability of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) with a high GWP.
The F-Gas Regulations will have a major impact on the air conditioning sector and any option for the next generation of refrigerant gas must be able to meet the demands of this stringent legislation in reducing the environmental impact of HFCs.
R32 has a GWP of 675 compared to R410A refrigerant which has a GWP of 2,088 and Dickinson sees this as an important reason why the market is expected to move quickly to the new refrigerant: “Not only will this help businesses demonstrate what they are doing to help the environment, the use of R32 also allows the Mr Slim units to offer increased efficiency compared to equivalent R410A models.”
Mitsubishi Electric is first to the UK market with such an expansive line-up and the new R32 Mr Slim Power Inverter models have been built specifically for the new refrigerant.
The range includes ten outdoor units offering single-phase and 3-phase options, with a capacity range from 3.5 to 14kW. 25 individual indoor units are also available as ceiling cassettes, ceiling concealed ducted, wall-mounted and ceiling suspended models. Mr Slim Power Inverters are also available in twin and triple multi-split configurations delivering complete flexibility for system designers.
Not only do the systems offer better performance at the same price, they also offer longer pipe runs with 100 metres available on the 10kW, 12.5kW and 14kW models – 25 metres longer than the equivalent R410A versions and the longest currently available on the market. This includes a 30 metre lift that is unique in the UK. The longer pipe runs are designed to make Mr Slim R32 even more fl exible and allow systems to be installed where previous site restrictions would not allow.
Mr Slim R32 Power Inverter models are available in twin and triple split configurations and offer full heating capacity down to -3ºC. The range also includes Mitsubishi Electric’s unique Replace technology which can utilise existing pipework, making it ideal for office and retail refurbishments.

Kingspan
Kingspan Solar launches ‘Low Inclination’ Heat Pipe System
Kingspan Solar, global leader in manufacturing high performance solar thermal solutions, has recently launched the market’s first ‘Low Inclination’ Heat Pipe collector with a unique temperature limitation device. The company has designed a special ‘Low Inclination’ roof kit for its Thermomax collectors, which significantly increases the flexibility of installation and usage of the HP400 and HP450 models. The original Thermomax HP400/450 system can only be mounted at inclinations between 20° and 75°. Addition of the new ‘Low Inclination’ kit allows the collectors to be mounted at inclination angles down to 10° and up to 90°. This makes them suitable for use in a wider number of applications, even where the original Thermomax HP couldn’t be used. The new kit makes the system especially suited for industrial flat roof applications, where high ballast loads can now be avoided thanks to reduced wind load.

EGGER extend industry guarantee on Protect flooring
Previously guaranteed for up to 42 days, new research shows that EGGER’s market leading flooring product EGGER Protect can remain exposed to the elements for an industry unrivalled 60 days, helping UK house builders’ tackle unforeseen delays and combat weather related stoppages on their projects.
Following a round of comprehensive testing at the company’s UK HQ, EGGER has extended its industry guarantee to 60 days for the length of time EGGER Protect flooring panels can be exposed to the elements during the build process.
EGGER Protect is manufactured from an EGGER P5 flooring grade particleboard with a unique, weather resistant surface layer applied to the top and underside of the board. Its hard-wearing antislip surface provides additional foot holding in wet and dry conditions, which contributes to site safety and creates an essential safe working platform for use in construction.
Other benefits to house builders include faster installations and fewer weather related delays. EGGER Protect boards are ideal for use with underfloor heating systems, they can also be tiled directly onto and are CE and FSC certified.
When glued with EGGER Joint & Joist D4 Adhesive it creates a fully sealed working deck that requires no joint sealing tape, protects against moisture ingress, and also shields against impact and the wear and tear of heavy site traffic.
The boards can be installed during light rain conditions and the concrete-effect finish means no painting is required once work has been completed. The moisture resistant surface also means the finished floor can be easily cleaned in preparation for handover to the customer.

HI-MACS
The polygonal HI-MACS® structure in Munich’s HVB-Tower
Square, triangle, diamond – these terms just don’t do justice to the pearl white HI-MACS® interior design found in the entrance hall of the HVB-Tower of HypoVereinsbank. Acute angles, sharp or soft corners and tilted surfaces of various inclines are all combined to form a polygonal structure, resembling a crystal. It serves as a parapet, stretching across three floors and creating a spatial boundary to the atrium. Using this crystal shape, Munich-based HENN architects made the DNA of the building visible for everyone, following the brief by the owner. At the same time, they created a new geometrical dimension. Its impressive effect could not have been achieved without the solid surface material HI-MACS® which can be bonded seamlessly.
