Welcome

he NBS has released the results of a number of important surveys in 2017, taking a close look at issues such as the specification process.

The latest, covering manufacturers’ views on Building Information Modelling, is timely and constitutes essential reading for everyone in the industry.

Some manufacturers have complained about a lack of joined up thinking regarding the employment of BIM, which was claimed to be one of the supposed main strengths of the system.

The NBS has worked closely with the Construction Products Association on the BIM survey and despite the concerns there is still mounting evidence that the industry is embracing technological change.

As Peter Caplehorn, CPA Deputy Chief Executive and Policy Director, said: “Whilst still far from the norm, there is no doubt the UK construction industry is on the cusp of a technological advancement.”

But he also acknowledged some of the negativities surrounding BIM. “Currently we are in a situation where the supply chain is not as well coordinated as it could be, but through digitalisation our industry will find more efficient, cost-effective and smarter ways to do things,” he added.

“It is not surprising the majority of construction product manufacturers are already taking steps to adopt the use of BIM, but what is needed now is to ensure that they feel confident to do so.

“Surveys like this are useful in highlighting the gaps where industry must work together to encourage adoption, particularly with issues around standardisation and Product Data Templates.”

Communication is key to the future of our industry and this type of collaboration on significant surveys and research is vitally important.

And so is listening to the product manufacturers, the architects, the specifiers and others within the industry who have a depth of knowledge and expertise that will help to continue to drive us forward.

It has been an extremely difficult and challenging 12 months for the industry, but there are plenty of positive signs that we are heading in the right direction.

So we wish all our readers and advertisers a very Happy Christmas and look forward to what will hopefully be a prosperous New Year.

Construction industry warns against Brexit ‘cliff edge’ for EU workers

The construction sector has come together with one voice to warn the Government of the dangers of the industry facing a ‘cliff edge’ regarding access to EU workers.

In an unprecedented show of unity, seven of the construction industry’s major trade bodies have set out what they believe to be the sector’s responsibilities and requirements in a post-Brexit labour market.

The ‘Construction Industry Brexit Manifesto’ commits the sector to doing much more to recruit and train additional UK workers to reduce its future reliance on migrant labour. However, it makes clear that this will not be able to happen overnight and that, for some time, there will likely remain an ongoing need for significant levels of skilled EU workers.

The document sets down the industry’s key messages to the Government on what it will need from a post-Brexit immigration system in order to be able to deliver the Government’s strategic objectives for new housing and infrastructure:

• The Government should agree a transition period of at least two years as soon as possible, during which time EU workers arriving in the UK should continue to have a path to settled status

• The post-transitional migration system should be based on key occupations that are in short supply, rather than on arbitrary thresholds based on skill levels or income. The Manifesto comes with the support of seven major construction trade bodies: Federation of Master Builders, Association for Consultancy & Engineering, Build UK, Civil Engineering Contractors Association, Construction Products Association, Home Builders Federation, and National Federation of Builders.

Manufacturers tell all about BIM

For seven years, NBS has chartered the rise of BIM within the UK design community, but this week launched its first report into the views of construction product manufacturers.

With the support of the Construction Products Association (CPA), the report is now freely available for manufacturers to understand from its own community, what impact BIM is having on the industry.

“What’s great to see is the shared attitude between designers and manufacturers that BIM is the future,” said NBS CEO Richard Waterhouse.

“Collaboration is at the heart of BIM, and through the standardised information held in well-structured models, manufacturers and designers will be able to work increasingly closely together, making sure the right product is selected, installed and used through the life of a project.”

The majority of UK manufacturers are already taking steps to provide product information in a format that can be placed into the designers’ own model, and manufacturers agree that BIM information will be increasingly required by specifiers.

However, work to support this community is still needed as only a minority – 21 percent –believe they are confident when it comes to BIM knowledge and skills.

And for those who are progressing well, the community is relying on collaboration from those outside their own organisations to help overcome barriers to BIM.

Manufacturers believe that BIM will deliver real benefits, including reducing costs and creating time efficiencies through the design, build and maintenance lifecycle. These benefits are in line with the government’s construction strategy goals; yet 64 percent don’t believe that the government is enforcing BIM.

Over half of those who responded believe that the BIM mandate set for April 2016 has not been successful due to a lack of rigorous enforcement. However, just under half of respondents still believe that the government is ‘on the right track.’

Caring Wood wins RIBA House of the Year 2017

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has named Caring Wood by James Macdonald Wright and Niall Maxwell as its House of the Year 2017.

Caring Wood re-imagines the traditional English country house. It speaks of its time and place: with a contemporary design that has clear links to the rural vernacular. Inspired by the traditional oast houses of

Kent, the agricultural buildings for kilning hops, Caring Wood revives local building crafts and traditions including locally sourced handmade peg clay tiles, locally quarried ragstone and coppiced chestnut cladding.

The house comprises four towers, with interlinking roofs like markers in the landscape, echoing other oast houses in the distance.

Samuel Heath fittings help to retain heritage

Samuel Heath bathroom fittings, architectural hardware and concealed door closers have been used to help retain the Victorian heritage of six, Grade II listed buildings overlooking a garden square in London’s fashionable Notting Hill.

Working closely with English Heritage, furnishings and fittings were selected to retain the ambience of the Victorian era whilst creating a contemporary feel.

It is here that Samuel Heath products play a critical role. Bathrooms were finished in marble or colourful ceramics and it was vital that taps, showers and other fittings complemented or co-ordinated with the finishes and bathroom furniture.

An equally discerning approach was taken to the selection of Samuel Heath fittings for doors, windows and cupboards, with door furniture created for Studio L being used in selected areas.

Housebuilding stalls after a summer boom

The latest edition of the Economic & Construction Market Review from industry analysts Barbour ABI, highlights the levels of construction contract values awarded in October across all regions of Great Britain.

The overall contract value for October was £7.1 billion based on a three-month rolling average, a small increase on September but the highest total monthly construction figure for almost two years.

After a positive summer for housebuilding with more than £7 billion of housing contracts awarded between June and August, the sector experienced a cooler autumn with figures decreasing by 10 per cent and falling for the second month in a row.

The large HS2 contracts commissioned in September worth £7.2 billion alone are still having a major impact on overall figures, masking the slide in housing construction contract value.

Across the industry, project numbers were down in October by almost 10 per cent when compared to the same time last year, indicating that a number of larger projects were awarded within the month rather than a large succession of smaller contracts. It was a mixed bag for various sectors this month with industrial and medical & health construction joining housing as sectors that saw a drop in contract value, at 16.2 and 9.9 per cent respectively. Whereas infrastructure, commercial & retail and education all saw slight increases on the month and hotel,

leisure & sport construction saw a major increase in monthly contract value of more than 50 per cent.

The highest value project in October was the 1-5 Grosvenor Place - Belgravia valued at £500 million, more than three times the value of the second highest placed project, 340 flats & commercial units on Portugal Street in Manchester. 53 per cent of the value from the top ten biggest projects was located in London.

Regionally, London took back the top spot with 25% of the total construction contract value from the West Midlands, which benefited greatly in September thanks to the HS2 contracts. Joint second was the South East which contributed 14 per cent, which included the £40 million McArthurGlen Retail Outlet in Kent, alongside the North West which had the biggest residential project in October, the aforementioned Portugal Street project in Manchester.

Commenting on the figures, Michael Dall, Lead Economist at Barbour ABI, said: “It’s evident that the major HS2 projects commissioned in September are masking an underlying softening of activity in certain sectors of construction such as housebuilding.

“Housing has been driving overall industry growth across 2016 and parts of 2017 as infrastructure lagged behind but is now flagging. Without the HS2 developments we would be looking at a much bleaker picture in our results for October.”

Spotlight on…women in construction campaign launched

The UK and Ireland campaign ‘Spotlight on...women in construction’ has been launched by the Considerate Constructors Scheme to boost the muchneeded industry effort to attract more women into the construction industry.

The Scheme, which makes around 15,000 monitoring visits to construction sites, companies and suppliers every year, surveyed over 1000 people to find out why women still only represent a meagre 11% of the construction industry workforce.

The Campaign provides a variety of practical steps that can be taken to address this issue in the short, medium and long term.

The survey findings also revealed that:

• 94% of respondents agreed that the industry would benefit from employing more women.

• 76% said there are no construction jobs which only men can do.

• 74% said there should not be quotas for hiring women into construction.

• It is clear from the survey, that although some results appear encouraging, there is still a huge amount to be done, particularly in addressing sexism and changing misguided perceptions of what a career in construction offers to women.

Government unveils Industrial Strategy to boost productivity and earning power

Business Secretary Greg Clark has launched the government’s ambitious Industrial Strategy, setting out a longterm vision for how Britain can build on its economic strengths, address its productivity performance, embrace technological change and boost the earning power of people across the UK.

With the aim of making the UK the world’s most innovative nation by 2030, the government has committed to investing a further £725 million over the next 3 years in the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund (ISCF) to respond to some of the greatest global challenges and the opportunities faced by the UK.

This will include £170 million to transform the UK’s construction sector and help create affordable places to live and work that are safer, healthier and use less energy.

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has welcomed the Government’s new Industrial Strategy, but CEO Alan Vallance has made it clear the Institute sees this as the start, not the end of engagement between business and the Government.

RIBA CEO Alan Vallance said: “An effective UK wide Industrial Strategy is vital as we navigate towards Brexit and beyond –

delivered alongside substantial investments in our lagging infrastructure, it has the potential to greatly improve productivity.

“We welcome the renewed focus on developing workers’ skills but we need to recognise that the UK is at its strongest when we compete globally for talent.

“Alongside supporting our world class university system and developing new routes like apprenticeships, we need an immigration system that allows UK business to thrive around the world. A good start would be clarity for EU citizens living in the UK.

“I congratulate the Construction Leadership Council on developing the Construction Sector Deal, particularly the exciting progress they are making on offsite manufacturing. However, the new procurement standard for the construction industry needs to be owned by the whole sector, not just the larger builders.

“With our partners on the Creative Industries Council, the RIBA will continue to work on the sector deal for the creative industries. The focus on regional hubs, like RIBA North in Liverpool, and the recognition of the value our sector plays at home and abroad is incredibly welcome.”

Multi-million pound heritage project features Wienerberger’s walling system

ORIGINALLY BUILT IN 1826, BLACKBURN CATHEDRAL HAS BEEN A BELOVED PLACE OF WORSHIPS AND HAS AMASSED A REPUTATION AS ONE OF THE MOST ICONIC RELIGIOUS BUILDINGS IN NORTHERN ENGLAND. IN JUNE 2012 IT WAS ANNOUNCED THAT PLANS TO CONSTRUCT A £8.5 MILLION CLERGY COURT AND CLOISTER GARTH TO GO ALONGSIDE THE GRADE II LISTED BUILDING WERE TAKING PLACE – THE FIRST OF ITS KIND IN THE UK FOR NEARLY 600 YEARS.

The structure now stands proud, combining a traditional aesthetic with modern building systems to striking effect.

Global architect firm, Purcell, took on the task of finding new building materials that complemented the existing structure and a walling solution that would minimise wastage on-site. The answer to this was found in Wienerberger’s Porotherm clay block walling system. The system offers a winning combination of precision-engineering, efficiency and simplicity, making it a perfect fit for a project that needed a meticulous and speedy build.

The build itself was a challenging one: the town centre location meant it was vital for materials to maximise storage capacity and ensure that access to the compact site remained as easy as possible. Porotherm offered an effective option because its thermal strength, density and all-round performance ensured it could be the only block type required, thus easing the pressure of both storage and access. It was also important that the build was efficient so as to minimize disruption to the surrounding town

- and again Porothem was perfectly suited to that objective. The precision engineered clay block has a unique interlocking design that removes the need for mortar in the vertical joint, making it possible to build to story height in a single day.

“Being part of Heritage projects is always something we love doing, especially when it includes enhancing an existing structure of real social and historical significance.

A system like Porotherm offers mix of the traditional and the innovative to create some wonderful benefits: a natural lifespan of over 150 years, reduced time on-site, reduced on-site wastage and superior thermal and acoustic performance.”

Canon Andrew Hindley, Project Client, said: “When Wienerberger’s Porotherm clay walling system was specifi ed by our architect, he assured us that this modern building material would work well with the adjoining Grade II building. And he was right - it has enabled not only a speedier build but also proven how well modern engineering can combine with the historic fabric of the Cathedral.”

Chris Murphy, Project Manager, John Turner, commented: “Given my experience of using Porotherm on this very challenging build, I would have no doubts in using it in future projects for John Turner“.

THERE’S SOMETHING BIG ON THE HORIZON

Resort creates waves with seafront landscaping

MORECAMBE LOOKS OUT ACROSS THE IRISH SEA TO IRELAND AND THE ISLE OF MAN. THANKS TO A RECENT HARD LANDSCAPING PROJECT TO TRANSFORM A THREE MILE STRETCH OF THE TOWN’S COASTLINE, LOCAL RESIDENTS AND TOURISTS CAN NOW ENJOY SEA VIEWS FROM ACROSS THE ‘MORECAMBE WAVE REFLECTION WALL’.

The project involved replacement of the sea wall with a three-mile fibre-reinforced concrete wall, along with construction of a podium wall that follows the contours of the existing pavement and leans backwards by 150 towards the town.

The podium wall includes three viewing areas, accessed by a ramp at each side and a central set of steps that fan out in a semicircle. A matching set of ramps and steps mirrors this on the promenade side of the wall, creating ‘up and over’ access at three points along the three mile stretch.

Delta Balustrades was brought in to advise on edge protection requirements and develop a technical specification for balustrades at each up-and-over viewpoint section, along with the varied points along the Morecambe Wave wall where heightrelated edge protection was required.

Delta Balustrades’ ‘Orbis’ system was specified for both the handrails and the balustrades, providing a tubular finish for both the handrails and upstands that complements the curved edges of the wall. Due to the outdoor nature of the project in a coastal location 316L marine grade stainless steel as used to provide the maximum level of protection against weathering, contaminants and the saline atmosphere.

The balustrades and handrails were fabricated with a 320 grit polish to provide a smooth, matt finish that will maintain its appearance over time and prevent grime and contaminants from collecting on the surface.

For the balustrades on the steps and ramps at the up-and-over sections, the design called for stainless steel wire infill wires. Again, the local authority was keen to maximise the strength and durability of the installation, so the standard specification of three 5mm diameter wires was upgraded to 8mm wires. These were threaded through the intermediate posts along the ramp and the steps. A bottle tensioner was then used on the final post of each run to achieve the required tension.

In addition to the finish, careful consideration had to be paid to the fixings to ensure that they were tamper-resistant in the public environment. To achieve this, the installation team drilled into the reinforced structure and a threated insert was secured in the aperture using resin, enabling four security fixings to be used for each upstand.

The Morecambe Wave Reflection Wall project was designed to follow the curves of an existing natural coastline on one side and road on the other, with additional curves added into the mix at the steps and ramps for the viewpoint up-and-overs.

The Delta Balustrades team carried out a full site survey following construction to ensure that all the fabrication drawings were correct. As the finished construction did not accurately match the data in the original design drawings, this proved to be an important step in delivering an accurate and problem-free installation on site

In all, almost 4km of balustrade and handrail was used on the Morecambe Wave Refl ection Wall project, delivering a solution that will protect l residents and tourists from falls onto the promenade area below while providing a stunning new look for the seafront.

Currently, only a handful of manufacturers have published results for the HIU test regime, with Evinox being one of the first to undertake the testing process.

Howe Green Ltd appoints new Production Manager

Howe Green Ltd, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of floor, wall and ceiling access hatches, has appointed a new Production Manager to head its busy production facility in Ware. Warren Tyce joins Howe Green at a pivotal time in the company’s history. Established in 1983 to manufacture specialist floor access solutions for the supermarket sector Howe Green has grown to a team of 26 employees and now serves a wide range of industry sectors, in the UK and internationally. Originally a family owned and operated business the company was acquired in March this year by the ERA Group and incorporated within the Bilco range of horizontal access products.

Launched in late 2016, the BESA UK Standard for Heat Interface Units was introduced to help designers and specifiers evaluate the performance of a particular HIU on their network. This new standard aims to provide HIU benchmarking, similar in many ways to the well-known SEDBUK scheme for domestic boilers.

With an overall VWART of just 33.4°C, impressively low domestic hot water return temperatures and the ability to deliver flexible Keep Warm operation, the BESA test results provide a clear, independently verified confirmation that the Evinox ModuSat® XR range delivers outstanding heating and hot water performance for modern heat networks.

Rising costs beginning to take a bite out of retail

FROM THE COSTS OF BUILDING MATERIALS TO RISING RENTS, THE UK’S RETAIL INDUSTRY IS STRUGGLING MORE THAN MOST FOLLOWING A CHALLENGING 12 MONTHS.

The Construction Products Association’s Construction Trade Survey for Q3 shows that despite rising costs and diverging performance across sectors, the industry extended its run of growth to eighteen quarters.

The survey of main contractors, SME builders, civil engineering firms, product manufacturers and specialist contractors found that the construction supply chain reported increases in sales, output and workloads in the quarter, driven by increased demand in private housing, repair and maintenance and infrastructure.

Rebecca Larkin, Senior Economist at the CPA, said: “In common with the wider economy, the construction industry continues to experience cost inflation, particularly for raw materials. A clear consequence of the supply chain trying to absorb these higher costs is the fall in contractors’ profit margins since the start of the year. Combined with a smaller pipeline of upcoming work in some key sectors, the survey’s more mixed view on near-term industry prospects is not surprising.”

Despite this, there are still signs of success within the retail construction sector, both in terms of new build and refurbishment projects.

Among the winning projects at the BDA Brick Awards was Victoria Gate Arcade, which collected the prize for Best Commercial Building.

The latest of Leeds’ landmarks is a project of such scale and complexity that 3D software was used to plot and place every individual brick. There were approximately 360,000 used in total across 550 precast panels, which include Ketley’s bespoke bricks and specials in a blend of light and dark, as well as brick slips.

The project is a fine example of the way in which precast technologies can complement the specification and application of established building products.

The innovative design of pleated brickwork sits harmoniously with the richly textured historic brick of the surrounding architecture.

Inspiring environments

Creating the right environment and infrastructure for retail developments remains essential.

Horbury Facades is detailing, supplying and installing an inspirational new terracotta tiled façade, featuring stone stair towers with complementary granite at ground level, to the new Bridge Street car park in Warrington, part of the £107m Bridge Street Quarter Regeneration Scheme.

Working on behalf of main contractor I&H Brown and alongside Muse Developments, Horbury Facades’ skilled team is installing an intricate rain screen backing rail system to stepped light steel vertical cassette panels and then carrying out the complex task of installing individually coloured terracotta tiles

to meet the architects’ design specification and colour aspirations.

Designed by architects Leach Rhodes Walker, the facade features an intricate design with tiles supplied by Taylor Maxwell in four colours: pearl white, basalt, gold and black. The tiles are installed on the main entrance and rear elevation of the car-park and were complemented by an inset cassette. Compared to assembling multiple panels on site, the cassette system allowed the terracotta tiles to be installed up to 50% faster. Horbury Facades is also installing a feature Bullnose aluminium capping at the roofl ine to all three stair cores for enhanced aesthetics and weather performance.

At Ground level, Horbury Facades is supplying and installing a granite rain screen façade system, as well as adding a full height attractive exterior of natural sand stone to the three stair cores.

Worry free floor access for Westgate Oxford

Over 80 of Howe Green’s 7500 Series Medium Duty Stainless Steel Floor Access Covers were specified by architect Chapman Taylor LLP for the Westgate Oxford development.

The floor covers provide access to essential services concealed under the flooring.

The Howe Green 7500 Series Floor Access Covers provide safe, easy access to underfloor services and high levels of performance for what will be a heavily trafficked pedestrian area. The 7500 Series can withstand up to a 5 tonne pneumatic wheel loading and, as they are made of stainless steel, are resistant to rust and corrosion.

The covers, installed by specialist stone contractor Vetter UK, have been infilled with various types of stone to blend seamlessly with the different hard flooring finishes used across multiple locations. The flush finish ensures the attractiveness of the flooring is not compromised and the risk of slip and trip hazards is reduced.

The 7500 Series Medium Duty Floor Access Covers are tamper resistant, meeting the requirement for a secure access solution, a necessity in such a public place.

Array on show in Leeds showroom

Carpet manufacturer Heckmondwike was delighted when Christian Carpets, based in Leeds, choose Array in Marble from its Creative range for the refurbishment of its 80m2 showroom.

“We like the subtle, but stylish design of Array and this monochrome shade is very much on trend,” explains Simon Christian, Director at Christian Carpets.

“We display beds as well as carpet and we also wanted something that would complement our product range, without detracting from it. Another major benefit of Heckmondwike’s fibre bonded carpet is that it is really hardwearing as we get a lot of traffic through our showroom, we want it to keep its ‘good as new’ look for as long as possible.”

Heckmondwike’s Array carpet tiles and planks feature a mid-width rib design and a charcoal background, which is enhanced with a subtle linear pattern. The range features 12 colour options including Peacock, Blue, Black, Red, Lime, Purple, Magenta, Copper, Emerald, Fuchsia, Marble and Violet.

Like all Heckmondwike’s products, tiles from the Creative Carpet range can be cut onsite, allowing individual flooring designs to be created and installed with ease.

Gambling retailer bets on Novus for a winning refurbishment

Novus Property Solutions has completed an extensive refurbishment project for global online gambling retailer, bet365.

Originally founded in Stoke-on-Trent in 2000, bet365 has grown into one of the world’s largest online gambling companies employing over 4,000 staff. In 2016 bet365 opened a new purpose-built office in Stoke to accommodate business operations in the city. In addition to commercial office space, the company estate in Stoke also includes residential properties to house company employees from overseas.

This summer Novus Property Solutions undertook a 12-week refurbishment project for bet365, which saw two industrial units near the company’s new office transformed to create one large warehouse area with adjoining workshops. The project was designed by Stoke-on-Trent based architects Wood Goldstraw Yorath with Novus employed as the main contractor and a strict specification to adhere to.

Novus reconfigured the layout of the existing buildings to create one large usable space.

As part of the project a first floor mezzanine, designed to house a breakout area with fitted kitchen and offices, was installed while welfare facilities with staff shower and changing areas were installed on the ground floor.

Twisted fins impress at the Oracle

As part of a recent refurbishment of the Holybrook Mall at The Oracle in Reading, Levolux was invited to provide a spectacular internal screening solution, in the form of a false ceiling. The custom support structure, comprising horizontal support rails and vertical suspension rods, was devised to secure the assembly of twisted fins 1 metre below a concrete slab. In total, Levolux supplied and installed 42 twisted fins for this project, fixed horizontally at 660mm centres. Each 300mm wide fin is formed from 10mm thick extruded aluminium plate, with a length of 4.7 metres.

Levolux - Enquiry 24

The works included the removal of existing loadbearing partitions and floor, alongside the construction of new partition walls, timber flooring and ceilings. The team also carried out drainage, mechanical and electrical works as well as plastering before installing all new fixtures and fittings and redecorating throughout.

As the scope of the works was so extensive and the deadline tight, numerous different trades were required to work simultaneously alongside each other within the tight footprint of the site. The Novus team carefully co-ordinated with all its trades to make works as efficient as possible on site and ensure the deadline was achieved.

Product Insight 2017

Welcome

Welcome to our Product Insight 2017, our annual showcase of the innovation and commitment to excellence that typifies our industry. It is right to celebrate our world-leading product manufacturers precisely because of the challenges that have hit our industry on our variety of fronts throughout the last 12 months.

On-going political and economic uncertainty has weighed heavily, but perhaps the biggest challenge arose following the fatal fire at Grenfell Tower. The industry has taken a considered approach in its response to the tragedy in London, which is undoubtedly a seminal moment for the wider industry.

It brings into sharp focus the specification process. In the next 12 months as the public inquiry, independent review of building regulations for high-rise developments and other investigations will all have a significant impact.

The expert panel created by the Government to advise on technical aspects of what happened at Grenfell Tower and what needs to happen in the aftermath is important. But as an industry we all have a role to play in ensuring Grenfell Tower leads to significant and positive changes – we can all highlight deficiencies, pass on expertise and knowledge of how the current processes work and what improvements can be made.

Product manufacturers need to be at the forefront of this as their expertise and knowledge is vitally important to both learning lessons and creating new standards and best practice to take our industry forward.

It is a sentiment taken up by Carl Arntzen, CEO of Worcester Bosch and Chair of the Construction Products Association.

At the CPA’s annual Autumn Lunch, he pointed to a variety of systemic changes that are buffeting businesses across the industry, such as skills and labour shortages, resource constraints, climate change and technological advances, as well as political and economic pressures.

But he highlighted Grenfell Tower as a watershed moment. “Poor risk management, poor procurement, poor quality, poor building

management, not to mention complex regulations and controls, all contributed to the tragedy,” he said.

“No corner of the UK construction industry will remain unchanged by Grenfell, and it will require leadership from likes of the people in this room to take the industry forward.”

Mr Arntzen insisted that UK manufacturers and suppliers of construction products were well-placed to help the wider construction industry to modernise: “Already, we are creating smarter, more innovative products and methods of construction. And by using digitally-enabled, collaborative ways of working we help deliver better, more certain outcomes and avoid smart products being installed into dumb, poorly constructed buildings.

“I see our member companies improving quality, safety, performance and sustainability throughout our businesses and our products, and this feeds through to the projects themselves.

“We now need to help support such changes in the supply chain. If we succeed, there is potential for massive rewards in boosting growth, improving construction productivity and through this spur investment by our companies to increase capacity in UK manufacturing and wider construction.

“We also need to get on and deliver for the UK as a whole. Construction, after all, underpins the UK’s ability to grow and thrive and to create that ‘equitable modern society’ often spoken about but seemingly out of reach.”

It is a timely rallying cry for the industry and one we should also embrace.

Hidden benefits

THE CONCEALED DOOR CLOSER HAS LONG BEEN THE DESIGNER’S PREFERRED OPTION WHEN IT COMES TO RETAINING THE AESTHETICS OF AN INTERIOR, WITH SAMUEL HEATH’S POWERMATIC DOOR CLOSERS ESTABLISHING A REPUTATION AS THE LEADING PRODUCT IN THE FIELD.

here surface-mounted door closers feature control arms and mechanical boxes that can spoil the appearance of doors and interiors, Powermatic door closers are jambmounted, fitting neatly between the door and frame, similar to a hinge. They are invisible when the door is closed and particularly unobtrusive when the door is open.

British designed and manufactured, the Powermatic range currently features two models; the original controlled, concealed

door closer and a free swing version, appropriately named Powermatic Free Swing.

Both door closers are CE marked and have been engineered to meet the industry’s requirements for fire and accessibility, with independent certification providing the assurance of performance, quality and reliability demanded by architects and control officers.

The benefits of enhanced aesthetics are recognised not only in high-end, designconscious interiors, such as hotels and luxury

apartments, but also in other applications, such as mental health facilities and care homes, where visible mechanical devices can create an undesirable, functional atmosphere that instils feelings of institutionalisation.

Other benefits delivered by the high degree of concealment provided by Powermatic door closers include enhanced reliability, improved hygiene and heightened safety, thanks to a reduced risk of vandalism and ligature. These benefits become clearer when one considers the challenges faced by the products’ application in the various sectors of the building industry:-

Education

The risk of a surface-mounted door closer being damaged is particularly high in most educational establishments, whether schools, colleges, universities or student accommodation; the protruding arms and control boxes can present a very tempting target for the would-be vandal or prankster. Damaged door closers will cost money to replace and these costs will increase if the door has been damaged. A damaged door closer can also render a fire door ineffective, with potentially dire consequences in the case of fire.

Additionally, whilst not a risk immediately associated with mainstream educational establishments, the risk of door closers being used as a point of ligature might also be a consideration in product selection. Powermatic concealed door closers remove much of the temptation and opportunity for vandalism or misuse, reducing the likelihood of increased costs for repair and replacement and making facilities safer and more reliable.

Health and care

In many ways, the healthcare sector benefits in a similar fashion to the education sector. However, due to the variety of situations encountered and specialist needs of health and care facilities, the case for using Powermatic is more emphatic in three key areas of safety, hygiene and well-being:-

Safety

From the safety perspective, in addition to the consequences that a vandalised door closer might present, specialist areas of

To make an enquiry – Go online: www.enquire2.com Send a fax: 01952 234003 or post our: Free Reader Enquiry Card 28 // PRODUCT INSIGHT 2017 WWW.SPECIFICATIONONLINE.CO.UK
W

the health sector, such as psychiatric care, demand that particular attention be paid to the safety of vulnerable people.

Anti-ligature solutions are vital in many such areas, and Powermatic can make a valuable contribution. It is the preferred door closer for many continuous hinge anti-ligature solutions and is also recommended for use in antibarricade systems.

Hygiene

Hygiene and cleanliness are vital in every health establishment. With minimal surfaces on show. the jamb-mounted door closer attracts very little detritus when in service. This feature, together with its low mounting height (normally no higher than the centre point of the door), make inspection and cleaning procedures quick, easy and effective.

Well-being

The concealed door closer can make a valuable contribution towards the well-being of a health establishment’s clients.

In mainstream health services, psychiatric care and elderly care there is broad recognition that providing a homely, less clinical atmosphere aids recovery and enhances the lives of the service’s consumers. The concealed door closer can help to create a less institutionalised appearance to interiors, providing a more therapeutic environment and enhancing comfort.

Powermatic Free Swing is particularly wellsuited to the care home market, as it allows residents and staff to leave doors open during normal use without compromising fire safety regulations.

Hotels

Enhanced aesthetics are probably the main reason that architects and designers specify Powermatic door closers for hotel applications, although many of the health, safety and well-being considerations are also relevant.

From a practical perspective, the jambmounted closer has been shown to contribute towards the sound insulation properties of a door installation, with tests undertaken by architects on one high profile project showing that Powermatic offers an advantage over other concealed door closing devices.

Furthermore, the absence of protruding mechanical control arms and surface-

mounted boxes means that a jamb-mounted door closer offers an ideal solution in situations where door clearance is restricted, such as with 90° reveals.

In addition, the jamb-mounted closer’s position within the door facilitates quick and easy adjustment, unhindered by restricted headroom.

Commercial

Offices and other commercial developments will undoubtedly benefit from the enhanced aesthetics achievable by using Powermatic. However, the door closers are particularly favoured by designers and their clients where raised access floors are present, as they offer a viable alternative to potentially costly floormounted devices.

Housing

Prestigious apartment buildings have always been a prime market for Powermatic concealed door closers thanks to their ability to retain the high-end aesthetics that are paramount in such developments.

However, private and social housing at all levels, particularly apartments and homes in multiple occupation, also reap the benefits that Powermatic’s concealment brings in reducing the risk of damage through vandalism and, potentially, enhancing safety for vulnerable residents.

Opting for Powermatic door closers offers significant benefits in costs, convenience and safety, both to those responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of properties as well as for the residents themselves.

Heritage and refurbishment

Powermatic door closers are highly suited to heritage and refurbishment projects, as they facilitate the introduction of modern

fire safety, accessibility and convenience features, whilst enabling historically significant, features and finishes to be retained.

Powermatic also provides a simple and extremely effective solution where shaped door heads prevent the use of overhead door closers or where floor-mounted devices require the excavation of floors.

The benefits of enhanced aesthetics, improved safety and increased reliability are desirable across all sectors of the building industry. Powermatic and Powermatic Free Swing offer the performance, reliability and versatility to deliver many benefits, possibly in hitherto unseen circumstances. Considering the needs of clients and occupants of buildings is vital to maximising these benefits, and specifiers can benefit from Samuel Heath’s RIBA-certified CPD programme as well as the company’s technical specification team when considering the selection and application of door closers for specific projects.

Wraptite air barrier membrane exceeds latest fire safety tests

Group

Wraptite, the only self-adhering vapour permeable air barrier certified by the BBA has exceeded the latest fire safety tests applicable to building products used in construction.

Wraptite was extensively tested by an independent testing authority and achieved the highest classification for a polypropylene membrane of its type. The product was subjected to two separate tests: BS EN ISO 119252:2010 Ignitability of building products subjected to direct impingement of flame – Part 2 Single-flame source test, and to BS EN 13823:2010 Building Products excluding floorings exposed to the thermal attack by a single burning item. Following the test results the samples were classified according to BS EN 13501:2007+A1:2009. Fire classification of Construction Products and Building Elements: Part 1: Classification using Test Data from Reaction to Fire Tests.

Iain Fairnington, Technical Director for the Group explains, “BS EN 13823:2010 evaluates the performance of products in relation to heat & smoke production, lateral flame spread and the presence of flaming droplets or particles. Under these test conditions Wraptite achieves a Class B-s1-d0 rating, the highest possible for a polypropylene membrane. This classification gives specifiers absolute confidence in the membranes performance in the event of fire.”

Wraptite combines the important properties of vapour permeability and airtightness in one self-adhering membrane. Wraptite has received BBA certification for use in both roofs and in walls behind rain screen cladding making it an ideal choice for commercial projects with large uninterrupted façades.

ON DEMAND

Not sure about Building Information Modelling? Where have you BIM.

BIM (BUILDING INFORMATION MODELLING) IS A SMART 3D MODEL-BASED PROCEDURE THAT PROVIDES THE ARCHITECT, ENGINEER, BUILDER AND DESIGNER THE UNDERSTANDING AND RELEVANT TOOLS TO MORE EFFICIENTLY PLAN, DESIGN, BUILD, AND MAINTAIN BUILDINGS AND INFRASTRUCTURE.

BIM was brought to our attention in 2011 when published in the UK Government Construction Strategy published. Since then the BIM Task Group has been developing standards and requirements to enable BIM adoption. Like most things, some were quick to embrace it and others not so. For building product suppliers and manufacturers like my business OnLevel BIM ‘ready’ product information was identified as an urgent and essential requirement.

It’s been quite a few years now since BIM was first muted in the industry. From day one of Launching OnLevel UK I was keen to ensure that all our products were ‘BIM Ready’ and the BIM files easily accessible online for our customers; Architects, Designers and Builders alike, to download on demand’ and incorporate into specifications and building portfolios.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is defined by the National Building Specification (NBS) in the following paragraph: ‘’BIM or Building Information Modelling is a process for creating and managing information on a construction project across the project lifecycle. One of the key outputs of this process is the Building Information Model, the digital description of every aspect of the built asset. This model draws on information assembled collaboratively and updated at key stages of a project. Creating a digital Building Information Model enables those who interact with the building to optimize their actions, resulting in a greater whole life value for the asset.”

In April 2016 we saw BIM level 2 mandate coming into action. The Government 2011 Construction Strategy (GCS) requires that: Government will require fully collaborative 3D BIM (with all project and asset information, documentation and data being electronic) as a minimum by 2016. This refers to all centrally procured Government projects.

The majority of HM Government departments have already met the requirements for BIM Level 2 and the remaining departments are on target to meet the 2016 mandate. The task now is to consolidate and embed BIM Level 2 throughout departmental processes (Reference: http://bim-level2.org)

Although BIM isn’t currently required for every project, it is being taken on and certainly on the increase in use (only public-sector construction projects have been delivered using BIM, since 2016). Here at OnLevel we are keen to embrace innovation and appreciate intention of BIM’s ethos to improve value, operational efficiency, reduce cost and improve the quality of customer outcomes. These are all core aims of OnLevel and our approach to business.

Heartfelt®

Heartfelt ® scooped the Red Dot award 2017, prestigious international design prize, for product design, and has since introduced a new earth tones colour palette to complement the five greys and black and white.

Highlighting its wood collection, the manufacturer showcases its wide selection of solid wood, veneered wood and naturallooking woodprints in linear, grill, tiles, topline and panel form, while the 191 pages of the guide dedicated to Hunter Douglas’s full choice of metal ceilings demonstrate their sheer versatility in multiple applications and settings.

The guide also highlights the exterior range, which have been specified on prominent developments across the globe, including Gdansk Lech Wałesa Airport, Poland; Philips High Tech Campus, Eindhoven, The Netherlands; and the Reebok World Headquarters, Canton, Massachusetts, USA. Most of the interior products have a solid wood, veneered wood or metal version

adapted for exterior use, which are capable of withstanding wind loads and humidity. It means that architects and designers are able to continue the interior ceiling design on the outside of the building.

A resources section focuses on BIM, perforation patterns, acoustic test results and sustainability.

David Harris, General Manager of Hunter Douglas said: “For more than 50 years we have thrived and grown on innovation, which is why we are recognised as one of the world’s leading firms in design, function and sustainability in the fields of wall and ceiling systems.

“We manufacture some of the most dramatic and striking ceilings and walls for thousands of exciting developments and refurbishment projects and are trusted by architects and designers to deliver outstanding highperformance architectural products, whether they are working to meet LEED requirements or solve specific architectural challenges.

Maximum energy efficiency, double safety

DORTMUND. HIGH PUMP OUTPUT DOES NOT NECESSARILY ENTAIL HIGH COSTS OR A HIGHLY COMPLICATED INSTALLATION. WITH THE WILO-STRATOS GIGA-D, THE DORTMUND-BASED PUMP MANUFACTURER IS OFFERING A HIGHLY EFFICIENT DOUBLE PUMP, THUS COMPLETING THE PORTFOLIO OF GLANDED PUMPS.

t has been developed with a close eye on the requirements and needs of installers and consultants; as a result, the pump is equally reliable, user-friendly and efficient to use. Especially in double pump design, the standby pump always offers the highest possible operational reliability for the entire system. Due to its energy efficiency and small amount of space required compared to a solution with single pumps, the Wilo-Stratos GIGA-D is very well suited to a proactive pump alteration of existing uncontrolled pumps.

“The double pump, as well as the single pump version of our Wilo-Stratos GIGA saves up to 70 percent energy compared to conventional uncontrolled pumps,” explains the Wilo product manager, Jörg Keller. “Per pump and per year, this amounts to a saving of up to eight tonnes of CO2.” High efficiency pays off both in financial terms and for the environment. “When developing the WiloStratos GIGA, we have scrutinised the design closely to achieve an optimum match-up between all components from the drive and the electronics through to the hydraulics,” says Keller.

Efficient motor with IE5 efficiency class

The drive is the heart of every pump. In the High-Efficiency Drive (HED), the pump specialist from Germany has developed a motor that corresponds to the currently highest classified motor efficiency IE5 according to IEC 60034-30-2. “We achieve

optimum output utilisation with the help of EC motor technology,” explains Keller.

“Power losses due to the rotor can thus be avoided almost completely.” In parallel operation both pumps are also controlled in an optimised way for efficiency.

“The HED motor for the Wilo-Stratos GIGA-D can be as small as a third of the size of some conventional asynchronous motors with the same rated power,” says the product manager. “This not only improves its performance, it makes handling easier during installation or replacement. The hydraulics also help ensure the maximum possible efficiency in the double pump. Both the housing and the impellers are shaped optimally into a geometric form that conveys flow perfectly. Increasing the speed reduces the size and weight of the hydraulics: “This means we were able to make the impeller diameter smaller, and with that, the entire pump housing too,” continues Keller, describing the result. “And that without impairing the hydraulic output.” This saves valuable resources and simplifies transport, handling and installation. The system is designed to be durable and versatile, reliably pumping a wide variety of media over a temperature range of minus 20 to plus 140 degrees Celsius.

Convenient handling in individual use

In terms of installation and operation, the GIGA-D scores points with user-

friendly handling. Here too, Wilo relied on the expertise of its customers and users, and adapted the proven “green-button technology” accordingly with only one control element. This means the WiloStratos GIGA-D is easy and convenient to handle: “Information can be called up on the illuminated display at any time,” observes Keller. “This means there is no longer any need for an external device to display the parameter.” Optionally, the control can also be carried out via an infrared link using corresponding Wilo accessories. Particularly in major building complexes with correspondingly large pump systems, mobile control and parameterisation of the system is playing an ever-increasing role.

In the double pump, as already shown in the single pump, this is made possible by connecting to a building management system via electronic interfaces, referred to as IF-Modules. This means communication with all common building automation interfaces is possible. The electronic module controls the speed of the pump within the control range that can be adjusted by the setpoint. This means the GIGA-D adapts optimally to

changing operating requirements. “The pump electronics and frequency converter have been specially adapted to the requirement profile and the fields of application,” says Jörg Keller. “The individual adaptation is additionally carried out over a control range that is up to three times greater than other controlled pumps.”

For example, the speed range extends from 500 to up to 5,130 revolutions per minute; delivery heads of up to 51 metres water column or a volume flow of up to 120 m3/h can be achieved.

Efficiency has an impact

All these benefits add up to unbeatable energy and cost efficiency: Compared to a conventional electronically controlled pump, the double pump version Wilo-Stratos GIGA-D also uses about 31 % less energy per year – and up to 70 % less than comparable uncontrolled pumps. With 6,000 operating hours per year and an energy price of 0.22 EUR per kilowatt hour, higher investment can start to pay for itself after just one year.

Feature preview

BALANCING SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

WITH HIGH QUALITY AESTHETICS IS NEVER EASY. BUT COMPANIES ARE DEVELOPING PRODUCTS THAT LOOK TO COMBINE BOTH THESE IMPORTANT CHARACTERISTICS

This year Q-railing has introduced Easy Glass Up, a glass railing system especially designed for straightforward installation on low parapet walls round terraces, balconies and walkways.

It features a base shoe that is ultraslender at just 80 mm high. This unobtrusive mounting helps to maximize the view, making raised areas an even more enjoyable place to be.

Like all systems in Q-railing’s popular Easy Glass range, Easy Glass Up is designed for straightforward installation.

The extremely lightweight profile can be positioned with ease, and the ingenious Safety Wedge system speeds up the mounting of glass panels. Moreover, the entire installation process can be performed from inside the parapet, eliminating the need for scaffolding.

Easy Glass Up also has excellent safety credentials. A balustrade created with Up can withstand line loads of 0.74 kN/m when installed with glass 16.76 mm thick and 800 mm high.

“Safety is a key priority for all our railing systems”, says Bruce Bradshaw, General Manager. “Easy Glass Up is no exception. It has been extensively tested and successfully certified against multiple

national quality and safety marks, including AbP, statische Berechnung gemäß DIN 18008, NTC 2008, CTE, BS 6180 and SIA.”

Designed for light and medium use, either indoors or outdoors, Easy Glass Up can accommodate glass that is between 12 mm and 17.52 mm thick, and up to 800 mm high. The system includes a top-mount base shoe (custom-bent on request), two 90° connectors and matching end caps.

The high-grade aluminium profile has a RAL 9006 silver powder coated finish, so no additional cladding is necessary.

Q-railing’s wide range of cap rails, u-profiles or the sleek Edge Protection profiles can also add a distinctive touch to Up railings.

Norway to build world’s tallest timber building

MJØSTÅRNET, NAMED AFTER ITS NEIGHBOUR AND NORWAY’S LARGEST LAKE MJØSA, IS A RECORD-BREAKING CONSTRUCTION THAT WILL SIT ON THE EDGE OF THE NORTH-EASTERN TIP OF THE LAKE IN THE SMALL TOWN OF BRUMUNDDAL, AN HOUR AND A HALF’S DRIVE NORTH OF OSLO.

panning over 18 floors, the building will reach 80 metres high, and include apartments, an indoor swimming pool, hotel, offices, restaurant and communal areas. Construction is scheduled to be completed in December 2018.

Moelven, a Mjøsa-local Scandinavian industrial group, will supply the timber constructions from local spruce forests required to construct the tower and the swimming pool area.

“Mjøstårnet sets new standards for timber constructions. The building is the closest we come to a skyscraper in timber,” says investor and contracting client, Arthur Buchardt.

“The assembly and construction of the Mjøstårnet is nothing short of worldclass engineering, and will be managed without external scaffolding, despite the

complexity of working at heights. We are primarily using cranes and supplementing with lifts as needed. We have reached 33 metres to date, meaning we have 50 metres to go.

Arthur Buchardt can evidence the climate friendliness of building with wood. “A project group established by Norwegian road authorities investigated the possibility of building the world’s longest timber bridge across Lake Mjøsa,” he adds.

“Their studies show that building with wood instead of concrete can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 30 percent.

He believes that the construction sector will evolve in the footsteps of the automotive industry.

“In 15 years’ time I believe it will be illegal to produce and sell cars that run on fossil fuels. Similarly, I expect that

climate-friendly materials will become an international statutory standard,” he continues.

Creating a lasting impression through innovative products

THE INVESTMENT OF MANUFACTURERS IN R&D TO CREATE NEW PRODUCTS IS EVIDENT IN THE INNOVATIVE USES THESE SOLUTIONS ARE BEING USED FOR ARCHITECTS AND SPECIFIERS.

The BBC’s DIY SOS: The Big Build worked alongside Children in Need on a project to create a better living environment for teenagers in a foster care home in Swansea.

Having dilapidated over time, the project involved the transformation of an old fashioned and uninviting foster home into a pleasant and welcoming environment. With only 12 days to demolish and rebuild the premises, Formica Group offered its support by providing much needed surfacing for the building’s exterior.

Careful consideration was given to the design of the new build so that its aesthetic integrated into the surrounding residential environment. From the front, the timber frame of the 364m2 premises is inconspicuous among its neighbouring homes, however, architect Tom Russell, from the Emmett Russell Foundation, did reserve a special feature for the children in the back of the building.

Whistance,

SOS comments: “We added something a little special to the project by creating a colourful terrace with a 2m overhang where only the children can go – their secret place if you will. It’s like nothing we’ve done before”. To establish the tranquil space, two shades of blue from the VIVIX® by Formica Group exterior cladding range were used, Grotto and Maui.

The wide range of colours, ease of application, large sheet sizes, durability and stain resistant qualities of VIVIX® panels made it ideal for the project. Gordon continues: “The care home needed to feature contemporary but cool colours. With the compact laminate being applied to the care home exterior surrounded by a timber frame, aesthetic was carefully considered more than may be apparent on the first viewing of the final build.

“The timber, painted in yellow, will turn to a silver hue overtime so we intentionally juxtaposed the blue tones against the frame to complement the eventual transition. For visual consistency we even matched the colour of the screw fixings to the compact laminate sheets”.

The close attention to detail by the DIY SOS team on the foster care home, with its area designated specifically for the teenagers it houses, is a contributing step to the groundwork necessary to providing them with a brighter future.

Cost-effective products

Leading insulation manufacturer Saint-Gobain Isover has introduced an innovative pitched

roof range, Metac, to the UK market. The lightweight, glass mineral wool solution is a highly cost-effective form of insulation for habitable roof spaces and offers excellent thermal and acoustic properties.

The Metac range is easy to handle, cut, and install and can be friction fitted between rafters. This helps to eliminate air gaps and ensures optimal thermal and acoustic performance in a building. The range is selfsupporting, which means it won’t slump or give way when being installed between the rafters.

When installed in conjunction with Isover’s innovative Vario® XtraSafe membrane and accessories, the full system will also help improve the airtightness of the building and protect the structure from damage caused by moisture.

Stuart Dumbarton, Senior Product Manager, Isover, commented: “The industry is experiencing price inflation with certain rigid foam insulation materials, due to the increasing cost of chemicals used in their manufacture. Add into the mix issues with restricted availability and we’re seeing more customers actively seeking out more cost effective and readily available solutions for pitched roof rafter applications, such as glass mineral wool.

“The Metac range has excellent mechanical properties and is much easier to accurately fit between rafters than rigid foam boards. With a thermal conductivity of 0.034W/mK and a choice of thicknesses and installation options, specifiers can meet a wide range of U-values and reduce heating costs for homeowners.

Continuing improvements

Providing both swift installation and a realistic slate-effect, next generation SlateSkin is the latest enhancement Eurocell has developed for Equinox, its innovative tiled conservatory roof system. Together, SlateSkin and Equinox create the most advanced system currently available.

Now with ‘multi-course’ tiles built in to each sheet, the SlateSkin GRP system reduces the time spent positioning and nailing tiles, with no compromise on build quality or aesthetics, while its lightweight construction allows the roof pitch to be set anywhere from just 5o to 35o. SlateSkin is the only tile system tested down to a 5o pitch and hence is ideal for lean-to projects, which comprise up to a quarter of all UK conservatories.

Guaranteed for 25 years, the SlateSkin sheet-tiling system is not only durable but also considerably faster to fit than other conservatory tile roofing methods. In fact, it

can typically save two operatives a whole day when compared to fitting Tapco tiles. When combined with the Equinox system, it meets the requirements of BS 476 Part 3:2004 for the External Fire Performance of Roofs, the classification for fire penetration.

Using the technical support that Eurocell provides, installers can be sure of getting the right fit first time, every time. Once it has received the all the dimensions, Eurocell engineers will create all the components required, including the tile sheets, hip end caps and ridge and hip top cap using stateof-the-art equipment.

SlateSkin is just the latest complementary product developed for the Equinox roofing system, which features solid insulation panels integrated in the structure for superb thermal efficiency – approximately ten times better than an ‘A’ rated window. The result is a more comfortable living environment that costs less to heat or cool because it is insulated from the ambient temperatures outside, making it warmer in winter and cooler in summer.

The system also has a 5-35o pitch variable ring beam assembly that increases the types of roofs that can be replaced while adjustable angles on the hip, valley and ridge add up to

easier fitting, and ensure that tiles and ridges sit correctly for finishing. All rafters sit flush with the hip and rafter too, providing greater strength. Thermal breaks avoid moisture build up, and air gaps within the roof allow any moisture to dissipate quickly – so there is no danger of internal condensation, unlike some tiled roof systems.

Equinox kits offer a ‘one box solution’ – with SlateSkin sheets pre-cut to size and numbered for easy identification and installation. Plus, all the sealants and fixings required to install the roof to the highest standard are also in the box.

Architectural Copper Awards Winners Announced

THE RESULTS OF THE 2017 EUROPEAN COPPER IN ARCHITECTURE AWARDS 18 HAVE JUST BEEN ANNOUNCED.

The eighteenth iteration of these biennial architectural awards recognises the growing influence of copper and its alloys in modern design. But it also exposes to a wider international audience inspirational projects, some of which might otherwise go unrecognised. The 2017 judging panel consisted of four architects, all recipients of previous Copper in Architecture Awards: Ebbe Waehrens (BBP ARKITEKTER, Copenhagen), Maxime Enrico, (LAN, Paris), Ville Hara (Avanto Architects, Helsinki) and Craig Casci (GRID Architects, London).

A unanimous judges’ choice, the Maersk Tower research complex in Copenhagen, designed by C.F. Møller Architects, was the clear Winner. A major landmark building prominent on Copenhagen’s skyline, it nonetheless delivers on many other levels as well. The conceptual development of its complex programme offers a fresh, more openly interactive research building typology enabling interdisciplinary functions to work across and between floors and departments. Its response to urban context is impressive with a gentle curved form making it slim, elegant and sympathetic to its surroundings. And its qualities extend to exceptional detailing throughout with an innovative use

of gently animated copper fin facades that moves in response to the solar gain and defines the building.

The Public Choice Winner, with by far the most votes cast on copperconcept.org, was a new copper entrance pavilion hosting an innovative ‘water printer’ sculpture. It celebrates the regeneration of the remarkable 19th century reservoir in Wrocław, converted into ‘Hydropolis’ – the only knowledge centre in Poland devoted entirely to water. The copper to the side is punched with holes to mimic computer punch cards in keeping with the water printer theme. One of two infrastructure projects to be Commended was the Lahti Travel Centre, Finland,

designed by JKMM Architects. The second Commended entry was a pair of entrance portals for the Bosruck Tunnel, Austria, designed by Riepl Riepl Architekten.

Overall, the judges found their role challenging because of the contrasting types, scales, design approaches and contexts of projects – but also the high quality of entries generally. They commented that the winning and shortlisted projects display very different strengths but all demonstrate that great buildings can be made with copper, whatever their uses. They were also delighted to see all sorts of building typologies benefit from investment in good design and top-quality materials such as copper.

The shortlisted and awarded entries will be celebrated through a promotional programme to an international audience, including an awards brochure, video interviews with winners, social media channels and Copper Architecture Forum magazine – all available via copperconcept.org. More information and images of all the 2017 entries and previous Awards can be viewed at: copperconcept.org/awards

SureClad façades take shape at The Christie

CLADDING INSTALLATION WORK USING SHACKERLEY’S SURECLAD® CERAMIC GRANITE VENTILATED FAÇADE SYSTEM HAS STARTED ON SITE AT THE £100 MILLION PROTON BEAM THERAPY UNIT AT THE CHRISTIE, THE LARGEST SINGLE SITE CANCER CENTRE IN EUROPE.

The project is currently being built by Interserve Construction, part of Interserve Plc, the international support services and construction group.

The project’s design team at HKS Architects specified the use of Shackerley’s SureClad® ceramic granite cladding in a smooth natural finish to complement the existing Oak Road Treatment Centre building at The Christie, which was also constructed some years ago using Shackerley’s SureClad® ceramic granite ventilated façades.

The external envelope features extensive glazed elements to maximise natural light for patients and staff, combined with anodised aluminium and Shackerley’s SureClad® ceramic granite ventilated façade system. The SureClad® ceramic granite has been specified in two contrasting shades of creamy ‘Travertine’ beige and grey, both in a natural finish that will offer a warm,

welcoming feel to the building and a subtly reflective surface.

The design ethos for the façade was to create a look that is less clinical and more human, so the natural finish and the use of four SureClad® panel sizes will be central to the non-homogenous aesthetic.

The hard-wearing aesthetic of the SureClad® system was also an important factor in the façade specification as the impermeable ceramic granite cladding will resist weathering and contaminants to retain its high end, welcoming appearance over time.

New vapour control layer offers higher protection for buildings

The A. Proctor Group are experts at solving condensation, airtightness and energy efficiency problems in buildings and has launched a new innovative high performance variable resistance vapour control layer for use in commercial and residential projects.

Procheck Adapt is designed to protect the building fabric from the potential risks of condensation whilst providing the added benefit of serving as an effective airtight barrier.

Thinking fast with Kingspan Kooltherm

The National College for High Speed Rail in Birmingham is the latest project to benefit from the outstanding thermal performance of the Kingspan Kooltherm K110 Soffit Board. A BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’ has been targeted for the new development. To meet these requirements, a fabric first approach was adopted and several Kingspan Kooltherm products were specified across the site, most notably the new Kingspan Kooltherm K110 Soffit Board. Performance levels, combined with its BRE Green Guide rating of A+, help to contribute towards the award of credits within the BREEAM assessments.

Kingspan Kooltherm – Enquiry 48

Thanks to its unique design the new membrane offers variable resistance which adapts to hanges in humidity levels, becoming increasingly more resistant in Winter and more permeable in Summer. This ensures that the building fabric is protected from damaging moisture levels during cold, wet winter months, and allowing the fabric to dry out effectively in warmer, drier months.

Britannia Cast Range used for Exeter church

St Michaels and All Angels Church, a Grade I listed building in the heart of Exeter, required a complete overhaul and replacement of the rainwater system to the north and south aisles, vestry and sacristy.

ARP collaborated to ensure that the correct product, the right quantities, and a high quality cast iron was all present in the rainwater system.

Prior to the order being placed ARP provided a pre-painted sample of the cast iron so that both Williams & Burrows and Jonathan Rhind Architects could inspect and approve the quality.

The order for cast iron guttering and downpipes was placed and ARP responded with a speedy delivery date. All products and accessories were painted semi-gloss black in our in-house wet paint line.

The Britannia Cast Iron range from ARP is the ideal choice for listed, conservation or heritage properties - made from traditional die casts, Britannia can be used to match or replace existing cast iron rainwater systems.

Richard Burrows said “Our client, architect and ourselves were pleased with the products supplied and appreciated the endeavour of ARP to get things right. We will use ARP again and would happily recommend them”.

An education in top light

Off-site construction has facilitated the quick erection of an Early Years Centre for an Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ school.

The Kingspan TEK Building System panels have been fixed to the glulam frame on the walls and roof, which provided a secure building envelope that was then sealed with a breather membrane to make it watertight. Following this, the rooflights were installed down the centre of the roof and the Kingspan TEK panels clad with western red cedar shingles creating a visually striking aesthetic.

JJI-Joists – the versatile answer for floors, walls and roofs

USING I-JOISTS IN PLACE OF SOLID TIMBER JOISTS FOR FLOOR INSTALLATIONS IN DOMESTIC HOUSING IS NOW SO COMMONPLACE AS TO BE UNREMARKABLE.

Acombination of light weight, resistance to bending and dimensional stability has made I-Joists a firm favourite with builders across the UK. And first choice amongst the builders and architects is the James Jones & Sons Ltd JJI-Joist, which is the UK market leader with an estimated 40% market share.

What is less well known however is the versatility of JJI-Joists in being used for much more than just floor systems. JJI-Joists are now commonly used as wall studs where the range of depths available and 9mm web make them ideal where thermal efficiency and depth of insulation are paramount. A lot of architects are turning to JJI-Joists when

designing to Passivhaus standards for just these benefits.

JJi-Joists are also being increasingly used in roof structures as well. James Jones & Sons pioneered the Intelli-Roof concept over a decade ago; where cassette panels, formed using JJI-Joists and OSB sheets, are used to create a fully insulated ‘room in a roof’.

As the cassettes are craned into place in sections, the process of getting a watertight roof onto a building is much, much faster than conventional construction methods – the record, using Intelli-Roof cassettes is seven house roofs in one day on a site. Today the cassette roof principle has been widely adopted, and not just for

houses. JJI-Joist based cassettes are ideal where larger spans – up to 12 metresare required, such as schools and leisure facilities.

Maximising The Benefits Of Glass

THERE IS OFTEN A MISCONCEPTION OF WHAT YOU CAN AND CANNOT DO WITH GLASS AS A MATERIAL. IT CAN SEEM LIMITING, BUT IN REALITY, GLASS IN AN INCREDIBLY VERSATILE MATERIAL THAT IS IDEALLY SUITED TO THE MODERN HOME AND CONTINUES TO BE A POPULAR MATERIAL WITHIN ARCHITECTURAL AND DESIGN. IN MANY CASES IT CAN BE A SUBSTITUTE FOR TIMBER TOO.

Glass staircases are one of the elements in a home that can make the most of the glass’s versatile qualities, adding both a stylish contemporary appearance to an interior as well as increasing natural light flow making stairways feel more spacious.

Canal’s range of staircases are designed with these benefits in mind. Frameless glass balustrades offer a seamless connection with minimal obstruction to enhance the view from all angles. Glass balustrades are suitable for internal and external environments. The benefit of glass balustrades is that is requires minimal maintenance, only the occasional clean. Glass does not corrode so it makes it the ideal material for staircases, balustrades and balconies.

Glass balustrades come in a range of finishing options such as sandblasting. Through this technique Canal can create patterns in any shape or form to add a decorative touch to staircases, walkways and balconies.

Glass stair treads combined with frameless glass balustrades offer a clean contemporary look to suit any domestic or commercial interior. The combination of an open riser staircase with glass steps enhances and maximises the light flow within a room. Glass treads can also be sandblasted to create a slip resistance surface.

Find inspiration for your next staircase project by visiting the Canal Project Showcase at www.canal.eu.com, and discover a range of staircases in all shapes, sizes and materials.

Biggest balustrade order yet for £35m Mander Centre development

THE AUTUMN OF 2017 SAW

Specified by Bowmer & Kirkland, Laidlaw supplied their laminated structural glass balustrade to the bridge and main entrance of the long awaited Debenhams store.

The balustrade is constructed of 24.89mm laminated structural glass and finished with a custom sized sycamore top rail. With a continuous track fixing being set below the floor, keeping it completely hidden, the laminated structural glass system provides an elegant and sleek look to the Centre. But it is not just about aesthetics, the glass with its 3 kilonewtons loading, provides the ultimate level of safety in high traffic areas.

As with all of their projects, Laidlaw provided an initial consultation to ensure the exact specification was met. By keeping to their specified time frame, Laidlaw helped ensure that this project was brought to a close on time.

Laidlaw started working on phase 1 of the redevelopment in the Summer of 2016 and provided laminated structural glass systems throughout the shopping centre. The glass balustrade from Laidlaw is the finishing touch on this modern and impressive redesign project and can be added to the long list of prestigious developments that Laidlaw has worked on.

Colour psychology: Forbo helps to lift the mood at children’s hospital

FORBO’S

SARLON ACOUSTIC FLOOR COVERINGS IN A CAREFULLY SELECTED COMBINATION OF COLOURWAYS HAVE HELPED TO CREATE A WELCOMING AND UPLIFTING ENVIRONMENT FOR YOUNG PATIENTS, VISITORS AND STAFF AT THE ROYAL ABERDEEN CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL.

Ewan Buchan, Associate Architect at Tinto Architecture, and The Archie Foundation, the hospital’s official charity, followed the principles of colour psychology when devising the new child-friendly design scheme for the reception, family waiting area and adjoining cafe at the main entrance.

The reception is bright and spacious with panoramic views of newly landscaped

gardens. A large tree structure, encircled with bold concentric rings of Forbo’s Sarlon Uni acoustic vinyl in avocado, lime and blue, forms the centrepiece. The green tones of the flooring were chosen to establish a visual link with the gardens, reflecting its calming nature, and also to offer reassurance and create harmony and balance. The rich blue outer border adds a striking contrast, and the overall effect is intended to invoke trust and add to the serenity of the area.

Whilst colour choice was a critical to the specification, acoustics were also important. Sarlon offers up to 19db impact sound reduction in heavy traffic areas, with minimal residual indentation, and therefore presented an ideal way to reduce noise levels and promote well-being and comfort to all the users of the building.

In the family waiting area and cafe, Eternal Wood in Elegant Oak was specifi ed to blend with the overall ‘outdoor’ theme. Completing the fl oor scheme Coral Welcome entrance fl ooring has been teamed up with Nuway Tuftiguard barrier matting to protect all the interior fl oor coverings and to help keep fl oor surfaces clean, dry and safe.

Newly launched retractive switch is a UK first

Known in the industry for its leading design and development of premier electrical wiring accessories, Hastings-based manufacturer Focus SB launches the only fully certified 2 way and centre-off retractive dolly grid switch suitable for use with mains voltage in the UK market.

Providing a safe, desirable solution for lighting control and dimming systems where the quiescent (off) position is in the centre, the new dolly grid switch can be finished to match all Focus SB’s standard and bespoke switch-plates. There are similar dolly/toggle switches on the market, however these differ in that they only offer 1 way spring back

retractive dollies. Other retractive dolly switches are only suitable for use with extra low voltage supplies (ELV) and are unsuitable for use with mains supply, carrying a low risk of electrical shock, whereas this new Certified to BS EN 60669-1 product from Focus SB is insulated, offering a safer, more robust option.

The new switch is suitable for use with electronic curtain, blind, shutter and window operating systems.

Expect further new product announcements through to the New Year.

Tobermore hard landscaping solution specified at British Airways i360

THE TERRA FIRMA CONSULTANCY PROVIDED AN INFORMAL LANDSCAPE DESIGN ADVISORY SERVICE TO MARKS BARFIELD ARCHITECTS, SOURCING THE MOST APPROPRIATE HARD LANDSCAPING SOLUTION AT BRITISH AIRWAYS I360, THE NEW LANDMARK ATTRACTION ON BRIGHTON BEACH.

he Terra Firma Consultancy presented Marks Barfield Architects with Tobermore’s Sienna Duo - a block paving product with a striking granite aggregate finish that offered the contemporary look desired for the iconic structure.

Robyn Butcher, Landscape Architect at The Terra Firma Consultancy, noted that due to the contemporary style of the design and build, paving products were the most suitable hard landscaping material for the project.

“The aesthetics of paving was ideal for the envisioned design and, as other areas on the beachfront close to the project were due to be refurbished with new paving in the near future, we knew that paving around the British Airways i360 building would create continuity with these existing elements,” she

explained. “Paving also provided the benefits of being easy to lay and easy to replace.”

Robyn was involved in the process of sourcing and assessing paving products for Marks Barfield Architects and she was highly impressed with the quality, aesthetics and performance offered by Tobermore’s Sienna Duo block paving.

“A product with a modern appearance was needed to complement the structure which was crafted with a real futuristic feel,” she added.

“The modern finish and duo sizes available with Tobermore’s Sienna block paving was ideal for creating a contemporary look that was in keeping with the style of the national visitor attraction.”

Inside products insight

With rising demand for high-function kitchen appliances wrapped up in cutting-edge design, Zip Water UK – the brand behind the world’s most advanced drinking water appliances – has responded with a new HydroTap launch that promises the very best in style and substance.

Introduced this month, the new HydroTap All-in-One Celsius Arc instantly dispenses five different water types from a single tap, including filtered boiling, chilled and sparkling water, plus unfiltered hot and cold water for washing up.

Alongside this high level of functionality and filtration, the Arc’s elegant ‘swan neck’ and dual-lever design has been created specifically for the home; perfectly suited to both modern and period kitchens.

Available in all 12 colours – including Zip’s standard bright chrome, brushed chrome, matt black and gloss black, and Zip’s Platinum range of finishes, including rose gold, brushed rose gold, gold, brushed gold, platinum, gunmetal, nickel and brushed nickel – interior enthusiasts will love the design scope the new launch offers.

Russell Owens, Zip marketing director, comments: “Never before have we been able to offer a 5-in-1 tap that looks this good. Having worked closely with the

design community, including a range of design and retail specifiers, we were able to gain insight into exactly what consumers are looking for. The new HydroTap All-in-One Celsius Arc is the result of overwhelming demand for a product that delivers all five water types in an elegant design.”

With water that’s 25x more filtered than a water filter jug, the HydroTap not only eliminates the need for a kettle and an additional mixer tap, but also stocks of still and sparkling bottled water; working to de-clutter the kitchen sink area, and free up much needed storage and fridge space.

As well as benefitting from high levels of style and function, homeowners investing in the new launch can also rest assured they’re contributing to the energy efficiency of their home. With advanced energy saving features and best-in-class air-cooled technology, the Zip HydroTap All-in-One Celsius Arc performs to the highest standards of environmental responsibility and sustainability.

Novus gets historic building looking shipshape

Novus Property Solutions has reconfigured one floor of the prestigious Cunard Building in Liverpool to create a modern training facility which reflects the building’s heritage.

The historic Grade II Listed building has long been a distinctive landmark in Liverpool, having overlooked the city’s world famous waterfront area for the last 100 years. Originally built to house the headquarters of the Cunard Line, the building now provides a range of flexible workspaces with its grand architecture and stunning interior forming a unique backdrop. Novus Property Solutions was appointed by Liverpool City Council, the building owner, to complete the extensive refurbishment and restoration project to create a series of new training rooms on the first floor of the building.

Over the course of 14 weeks, a team of operatives from the contractor’s Liverpool office reconfigured the first floor layout from one large, open plan space, into seven individual training rooms and one kitchen area. While the brief was to ensure the training rooms would meet the demands of a modern workspace, it also needed to remain true to the heritage of the building.

Boutique ten-pin bowling, restaurant and bar operator, All Star Lanes, has installed flooring solutions from Moduleo’s Impress collection for the refurbishment of its Holborn and Brick Lane branches.

Commercial interior design specialists, Fusion By Design, used a range of authentic, wood-effect planks from luxury vinyl tile (LVT) specialist in the entrance, eatery, bar and bowling areas.

A total of 600 sqm of Scarlet, Country and Mountain Oak, in a selection of light and dark shades, were specified for both style and substance.

Paula Jepmond, managing director at Fusion By Design, comments: “Due to the high levels of footfall the venue experiences every day, we were acutely aware that we needed a floorcovering that would, first and foremost, offer longstanding durability.

“Scuff, stain and slip resistance were also key considerations, particularly with the space featuring a bar and dining area where spillages

can often occur, so the flooring needed to offer the proprietor and patrons the safety assurances expected in public venues.

“We love the fact that the range is so realistic and authentic as it is allows us the freedom to produce a stunning finish that rivals the quality and appeal of the genuine article, which can often be difficult to maintain.”

Beautiful terrace renovation with fixed Flushglaze rooflight

THIS FINE VICTORIAN TERRACED HOUSE IS LOCATED IN THE FASHIONABLE HARRINGEY LADDER WITHIN THE NORTH LONDON BOROUGH OF HARINGEY, AND WAS RECENTLY ONE OF THE RESIDENCES OPEN FOR PUBLIC VIEWING AS PART OF THE OPEN HOUSE SEPTEMBER 2017 TOUR.

Renovated throughout to an exceptional standard by Trevor Brown Architects, the house also boasts a new, contemporary extension, which has been sensitively designed to seamlessly integrate with the more traditional décor of the rest of the ground floor.

The installation of a Flushglaze fixed rooflight from Glazing Vision was key to unlocking the natural light in the windowless kitchen area, which shares its exterior wall with the neighbour’s house.

Having already had positive experience of using Glazing Vision’s products on previous projects, the architect specified one of their fixed Flushglaze rooflights for use on the Allison Road extension as it offered a number of benefits.

Firstly, it met a very specific requirement – it could be fitted to abut all 3 walls

Glow also has a digital temperature display, five-mode showerhead and chrome accents.

that framed the roof of the extension (2 from the client’s home, one from the neighbour’s house). Its clean, minimalist exterior would raise no concerns from the neighbour, nor ruin the views from the garden towards the house.

The lack of any unnecessary bulky capping would mean that the Flushglaze fixed rooflight would not trap dirt or debris, an important consideration given the recessed position of the rooflight and the limited access to it.

Secondly, given the need for a bespoke size of rooflight to maximize the amount of daylight entering the extension, Brown sought the precision engineering offered by Glazing Vision’s factory in Norfolk. The resulting Flushglaze rooflight was made in 3 sections, providing a span of 1600mm and a width of 4300mm, with a silicone seal at the join.
