f you are a regular passenger on the UK’s building and construction exhibition merry-go-round you might be forgiven for thinking your world has been shrinking over the last five years.

The industry’s main events are still pulling in exhibitors and visitors and yet not at the rate we have previously seen.

There is some irony in the news that the International Confex event production show is growing at such a rate it has taken the decision to move to London’s ExCel from Olympia to take advantage of the extra space available.

Indeed, the move to ExCel will provide the backdrop for the development of UK Events Week which will bring a dedicated focus for the UK’s meetings, events and exhibition industries which are worth an estimated £43bn annually to the UK economy.

So, although the exhibition industry itself is expanding, the construction industry does not seem to be embracing the concept of the large national/international event with the same amount of enthusiasm.

The UK’s main events are still dwarfed by the major European exhibitions that fill out the massive spaces available in German and French cities with the emphasis still on maximising exhibition space for manufacturers. Yet in the UK the main draw for visitors now appears to the more CPD-friendly conference and seminar.

Part of the problem might be that we have diluted the offering too much. There are now so many exhibitions, events, expos, conferences and seminars throughout the year, that we are bamboozled by the choice.

In an age when time is so precious and we seemingly have to justify the decision to spend any time outside of our office, there is no doubt that face-to-face meetings, networking opportunities, sharing experience and being able to view products and understand more about services, is still as vitally important as it always was.

Yet as one Futurebuild exhibitor put it to me: “You can easily ignore 10 phone calls or emails from me, but if get you on my stand for 20 minutes and show you our products and talk about what you need, then I’m confident we will start doing business.”

Is it time to rethink our approach to exhibitions?

Trust in Keys

Courcoux, Sales and Product ManagerCLIQ® Systems at Abloy UK discusses how advances in technology are revolutionising the world of key control. When thinking about security, keys are often viewed as the most integral element of a system, and there is an expectation that keys will remain secure forever. In contrast, data security is met with much more apprehension and there is greater emphasis placed on changing passwords regularly to remain secure.

Leading contractors take on smaller contracts

Leading contractors are taking on smaller contracts according to new construction industry research from Glenigan.

The combined order books of the top 50 contractors fell by 31% last year. This was partly due to fewer major projects starting as clients held off work due to uncertainty over Brexit.

As a result, the size of the average contact won by the top 50 contractors last year fell to £14.9 million from £17.2 million in 2017.

Average contract size is a key measure of risk, as when work is scarce some contractors tend to take on bigger projects to keep cash rolling in.

Any problems that emerge further down the line inevitably cost more on major projects. Only last month (February), Galliford Try announced another £26 million hit from the troubled £1 billion Aberdeen Western Bypass project, which the group took on with Balfour Beatty and Carillion, which subsequently collapsed last year.

Out of the top 50 contractors in 2018, the company taking on most large major projects was Lendlease. Last year, the UK arm of the Australian giant won major work including the £350 million 2022 Commonwealth Games village in Birmingham and the £300 million Bishopsgate commercial scheme in London.

At Lendlease, which has successfully pursued a strategy of taking on a handful of major projects, the size of the average contract increased by 26% in 2018 to £134.5 million.

The biggest increase in average project size amongst the leading 10 contractors last year was at Wates. The average contract won by the group more than doubled as awards included the £650 million Northern Estate Programme at the Houses of Parliament.

In 2017, the size of the average contract award had increased at nine out of the top 10 contractors as major projects HS2 and Battersea Power Station swelled order books. Last year, only five of the top 10 contractors were awarded, on average, larger contracts according to Glenigan’s industry research.

New guide on energy storage launched for UK house builders

Recent advances in household-scale battery systems are making them an ever more attractive option for new home buyers, and there’s an expectation that they could become commonplace as part of a home’s electrical infrastructure in the near future.

A new guide from the NHBC Foundation now aims to ensure that battery systems are selected to be fit for purpose. The report –NF83 ‘Watts in store? Introduction to energy storage batteries for homes’ – looks at key aspects of battery selection, ensuring that the right questions are asked of manufacturers and that installed systems meet reasonable expectations of home owners.

While inclusion of a battery system is

currently a choice, driven either by home buyers who are increasingly aware of the leading brands, or by house builders themselves who see a marketing advantage in offering a battery system, their potential benefits to householders and to the efficiency of national energy supply are significant.

This point has been recognised in other countries, particularly in Germany, where government incentives have stimulated uptake of household batteries and in turn reduced the installed cost dramatically.

Commenting on the new report, NHBC’s Head of Standards, Innovation and Research Neil Smith said: “Selection is not straightforward as there is now a range of battery types on the market, with considerable variation in performance, and some complexity in the way their performance is described.

“This guide encourages careful specification of performance in line with reasonable homeowner expectations and is a contribution to ensuring successful implementation of battery storage technology.”

At Galliford Try, the size of the average contract award shrank by 18% as the group’s order book fell by 50%.

The biggest drop in contract size last year, down 57%, came at Sir Robert McAlpine but the company’s overall order book also reduced by 55% in 2018.

Smart heating controls expected to drive high levels of growth

According to the latest Domestic Central Heating market report (20182022) from AMA Research, smart heating controls are likely to take market share from conventional heating controls in the longer term.

In 2017, it is estimated that around 30% of heating controls sold by value were smart heating controls. This figure is likely to increase to over 45% of heating controls sold by value by 2022.

There is a growing awareness of the benefits of smart heating controls. UK householders are becoming much more environmentally aware and are using smart heating solutions in order to minimise energy usage and to save money It is estimated that around 5% of UK homes now have smart heating controls installed.

The heating market is mature with central heating installed in around 92% of UK homes. However, growth potential still exists, through product innovation designed to improve thermal performance, energy efficiency and control.

BSRIA launches Offsite Construction for Building Services topic guide

BSRIA has launched its highlyanticipated new free to download topic guide on Offsite Construction for Building Services.

Offsite construction, or offsite manufacture or pre-fabrication, or modular construction, is a general term for making parts of a building away from the construction site, in purpose-built facility, before transporting them and installing them in their final location. It has the potential to make things on site much easier.

Installing several mechanical and electrical systems on a live construction site can be challenging, with limited space, health and safety considerations.

And often to a demanding schedule.

The guide highlights: offsite construction for services distribution – namely: vertical services risers; larger assemblies; horizontal distribution; offsite construction for packaged rooms – and inside or outside? Plus: if offsite construction is right for the project in hand?

The guide’s author, John Sands, Principal Consultant, BSRIA, said: “As with any technology or process, the use of offsite construction needs to be considered carefully to get the best from it.

“Working in a controlled, purpose-made environment can increase productivity, with no distractions from other construction site activities or issues.”

CPA issues call for evidence on product information

Since the publication of the Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety by Dame Judith Hackitt following the Grenfell Tower fire, the UK construction industry and fire sector have been working hard to meet the various challenges set for it.

The Construction Products Association has been involved with several critical elements of this activity, and amongst these has established a “Marketing Integrity Group” to specifically address Chapter 7 of the report, which challenges how product information is made available to the wider supply chain. The Group is led by Adam Turk (Managing Director, Commercial, for Baxi Heating) with a core team of 20 marketing, communications and technical professionals from across the supply chain.

In order to inform its work further, the CPA’s Marketing Integrity Group has issued a Call For Evidence seeking responses from across the supply chain, including architects, designers, specifiers, consultants, manufacturers, contractors, builders, merchants, maintainers, and indeed anyone who uses product information through the life of the asset.

Amongst the areas of interest covered by the survey are:

• Ease of finding information

• Product substitution

• Completeness and correctness of information

• Products as part of a system, or use in a variety of applications

The survey will remain open until Friday, April 5. The CPA’s Marketing Integrity Group intends to publish its findings and recommendations in the autumn.

CPA Deputy Chief Executive and Policy Director, Peter Caplehorn, commented: “The evidence base we are seeking will be a vital contribution to our work on reform postGrenfell Tower fire.

“The survey results will help us make recommendations to ensure that consistent, unambiguous and clear product information on construction materials is made available to the wider supply chain. We need no reminder of how important this information is and I encourage as many responses to the survey as possible.”

Marley announces BAA partnership

Marley has teamed up with the Birmingham Architects Association (BAA), in a year-long sponsorship agreement which will see the company become a ‘friend of the BAA’ until 2020.

Through the partnership, Marley will support the BAA at a number of bespoke events over the next twelve months, working alongside the region’s architects and continuing to develop its already strong relationships within the architectural community.

Jonathan Shum, Specification Manager at Marley, comments: “Marley has long established relationships with architectural professionals as we work together to promote roofing best practice and design excellence. This agreement will allow us to further engage with architects so we can better understand the issues they face and share our expertise and support.”

The entire logistics management team has been trained by anti-slavery partner, Hope for Justice, and a bespoke training film, in-house training programme and supporting material is now being cascaded throughout logistics operations. The initiative was officially launched with the backing of West Yorkshire PCC and the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners (APCC) lead on Modern

Slavery, Mark Burns-Williamson, and with the support of the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA).

Mark Burns-Williamson said: “Businesses and their supply chains have a key role in putting an end to modern slavery. They are invaluable partners and well placed to help in the detection and prevention of these horrific crimes and abuses.

“Raising awareness and providing training among frontline workers is key in helping eradicate such abhorrent practices.”

Delving into technology in design

TO UNDERSTAND THEIR VIEWS ON TECHNOLOGY AND WHAT THE FUTURE OF THE INDUSTRY IS LIKELY TO LOOK LIKE, GLEN DIMPLEX HEATING & VENTILATION COMMISSIONED INDEPENDENT RESEARCH OF 250 UK DESIGNERS AND ARCHITECTS TO GAUGE THEIR ATTITUDES AND OPINIONS.

he majority (74%) of architects and designers polled are already using digital technology to visualise their projects before the build is executed.

This is not surprising given that BIM (building information modelling) saw its biggest year-on-year growth in usage and awareness last year since 2014. Indeed, just over a third of those in the construction industry now use the classification system, according to the National BIM Report 2018.

Another increasingly popular technology is virtual reality, which provides the ability to ‘see’ a project without travelling to it, making collaboration easier and allowing customers to gain more understanding of the end design than they would with a 3D model. However, respondents were fairly divided as to when they think virtual reality will have an impact on the building industry/ design process, with the most common answer being in 0-6 months (23%).

Augmented reality can also be of benefit to designers and architects as it can be used to place a 3D model into an existing space, mitigating the need for manually recorded measurements and drawings, thus leading to greater accuracies and efficiencies. However, again respondents were divided as to when they think augmented reality is going to have an impact on the industry, with most predicting no impact for at least six months.

IoT and connected technology have the potential to drastically improve productivity in the construction industry by tracking assets and monitoring equipment for maintenance and repair. When it comes to architecture and design, IoT can be a powerful technology to improve building efficiencies and security. Many respondents think that IoT and connected technology will have an impact in the short term, with 23% saying it is impacting the industry now, and 18% anticipating it will have an impact in the next 0-6 months.

Focus on flame

One technology which can be implemented now by architects and designers is flame. It can be used to enhance the aesthetics and appeal of a space in both domestic and commercial buildings. Modern flame technology is both dramatic and advanced, providing very real

effects. Some installations can create smoke and crackling sounds, which add to the allure and authenticity of the installation.

In fact, 58% of the research respondents believe that flame installations help to create a comfortable and enticing environment. Despite this, the majority of designers and architects (79%) are concerned about using flame in their projects, primarily because of health and safety concerns, energy efficiency, and cost.

However, fire installations don’t necessarily require a ‘live’ flame. Flame technology installations are more flexible than real fires as they do not require ventilation in terms of chimneys or flues, which makes them easy to install and less costly. When asked about

other technology that is likely to shape the industry, many respondents cited robotics in some form. The most frequently mentioned options were plant automation and 3D printing and modelling. In addition to this, several respondents said drones would play a major part in the future of the industry.

Cycling towards a safer future

WITH A CONTINUED RISE IN THE POPULARITY OF CYCLING AND MAJOR UK CITIES INVESTING IN CYCLE HIGHWAYS, MARK BARTER, SALES DIRECTOR FOR CHARCON HARD LANDSCAPING, LOOKS AT HOW HARD LANDSCAPING CAN TACKLE THE ISSUES OF SAFETY AND SEGREGATION, AND HOW ENGAGING WITH PLANNERS AND LOCAL AUTHORITIES FROM THE OUTSET CAN HELP MAKE THE ROADS A SAFER PLACE.

t pleases me to see more people taking to their bicycles. There’s a sort of cherished nostalgia associated with having the ability to get from A to B by the power of your own steam. Having said that, cycling should equally be deemed a thoroughly modern way to travel if to not only help minimise air pollution, but also encourage more active lifestyles for ourselves and generations to come.

It’s good therefore to see that cycling is growing in popularity. The Department for Transport has reported that cycle traffic in Great Britain has risen almost every year since 2008. In 2017, pedal cycles accounted for 3.3 billion vehicle miles, a 3.1% increase from 2016 and a 28.2% increase from 10 years ago.

That said, we’re far behind other countries when it comes to daily cycling. According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents’ (RoSPA’s) most recent report on cycling accidents, a total of 18,477 cyclists were injured in reported road accidents within Britain during 2016, including 3,499 who were killed or seriously injured.

Not such good news then; and little wonder that only 4% of Brits cycle daily. Around 59% of non-cyclists in Britain feel that it is too dangerous for them to cycle on the roads and Cycling UK believes that substandard highway layout and motor traffic volume can all conspire to make cycling feel

and look more dangerous than it actually is. For people within the UK to feel undeterred from taking to their bikes, we need a road infrastructure that promotes safety for all users. Having seen a flurry of headlines in 2017 about the disturbing number of cycling casualties on UK roads, Charcon Hard Landscaping has developed a number of solutions to help reduce and prevent future accidents between cyclists and drivers.

Kerbs play an important part in providing appropriate protection for people cycling, as motorists merging into the paths of cyclists, and vice versa, are one of the most common causes of cycling accidents. Our cycleway solutions have been employed by numerous

councils across the country in order to safely separate cyclists from key traffic blind spots. Our three integrated systems – City Cycle Kerb, Eco Countryside Kerb and Cycle Kerb, have all been designed to safely segregate cyclists from passing traffic and also to enable cyclists to gently transition across the highway in a non-hazardous way.

Alongside cycle highways, kerbs can be used in traffic calming schemes such as traffic islands, builds outs and raised planting beds. Creative and aesthetically pleasing initiatives such as these help reduce the speed of traffic on the road, thus making it a safer and more enjoyable route for cyclists.

Despite some councils leading the way, many are still yet to tackle the issue head on. For solutions such as these to be incorporated within a scheme, it is vital that manufacturers/ suppliers engage with planners and local authorities at an early enough stage.

Long term, our hope is that we can continue to see more investment from councils to invest in segregation systems to aid cycle safety and we will continue to engage with them to achieve this. Until then, the remit is for all relevant parties, including those working in our own industry, to strive for best practice and help raise the issue of cyclist safety further up the agenda.

Excellence in galvanizing

IT’S ESTIMATED THAT WORLDWIDE, ONE TONNE OF STEEL TURNS TO RUST EVERY 90 SECONDS – HOT DIP GALVANIZING PROVIDES THE MOST EFFECTIVE AND RELIABLE WAY TO PROTECT STEEL FROM CORROSION FOR UP TO 70 YEARS DEPENDENT ON THE ENVIRONMENT IT IS BEING USED IN.

n contrast with other finishes or protective coatings, hot dip galvanizing results in minimal waste and combined with the long life and recyclability of zinc-coated steel - make hot dip galvanizing a highly resourceefficient and sustainable process with minimal environmental impact.

Because of the long life of hot dip galvanized steel products, scrap metal wastage is also reduced, while several studies have demonstrated the high economic and environmental costs associated with the repeated maintenance and painting of steel structures - and both of these burdens are greatly reduced through initial investment in longterm protection. Wedge Group Galvanizing is the largest hot dip galvanizing organisation in the UK with a history dating back over 150 years. With 14 plants strategically placed across the country, they offer a truly national galvanizing service.

BS8613: 2017 Finger Protection for pedestrian doors

THE FP200 & FP400 FROM STRAND HARDWARE LTD HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFULLY TESTED AT EXOVA TO BS8613: 2017 FINGER PROTECTION FOR PEDESTRIAN DOORS AND IT NOW COMES WITH A LIFETIME GUARANTEE! (CONDITIONS APPLY)

This standard gives a benchmark for professional bodies to refer to and assists manufacturers in designing acknowledged fit-for-purpose products to aid in the prevention of serious injury to fingers by ensuring that Finger Protection devices are rigorously tested.

Our FP200 & FP400 have been successfully tested to BS8613 and achieved class 2 which is the highest level in the UK.

FP200 and FP400 are fitted on the hanging stile on new doors or retrofitted on existing doors and remain the dominant finger prrotection devices within the industry, with proven use in the UK and international markets.

We are not aware of any known incidents of entrapment or product failure since we began in 1991!

It is children who suffer a disproportionate number of finger entrapment injuries, although adults are also at risk, mainly because of their lack of understanding of the dangers presented by doors.

This new British Standard therefore covers the needs of all age groups and aims to minimise the risk of injury to fingers that can lead to hospital treatment or in severe cases amputation.

he new HSBC UK building on Broad Street is the first in Birmingham to be constructed to the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold accreditation standard – the globally recognised symbol of sustainability achievement.

The interiors of this ten-storey building, which will house 2,500 staff, were designed by award-winning tp bennett and include external glazing made up of 25% recycled materials as well as a thermal coating to increase overall energy performance, the steel used in its construction has a minimum of 20% recycled materials and it features energy-efficient LED lighting.

To attain the Gold LEED, the internal design was built using sustainable timber approved by the Forest Stewardship Council, which was sourced by Hunter Douglas Architectural.

The international architectural products company was asked to supply a total of 850m2 of ceiling panels. All the wood sourced by Hunter Douglas Architectural is FSC certified and the company is also committed to the Cradle to Cradle principle in its product development.

For the prestigious HSBC scheme, it supplied 600m2 of MDF grill finished in RAL9010 white. The panels, 25mm wide and 115mm in height, were manufactured with a 120mm gap to create a modern and light, aesthetically pleasing look for the space.

For the level 10 client meeting rooms , Hunter Douglas Architectural supplied 150m2 American White Oak veneered grill that was manufactured 39mm wide and 95mm deep. It was manufactured with an 86mm gap. Veneered wood grills are an environmentally friendly building product because the veneer used in the manufacture is produced efficiently: modern production methods ensure that about 8001000 m2 of veneer can be produced from 1m3 of wood. Another advantage is that it is a made-to-measure solution, which means little or no cutting is required on site, thus significantly reducing the installation time and cost.

For the HSBC University auditorium, Hunter Douglas Architectural supplied 100m2 600 x 600mm of its Prestige American White Oak veneer panels. Acoustic control was achieved via the application of black nonwoven acoustic fleece to the back of the panels and bespoke 9mm diameter holes in the panels. The beauty of the Prestige system is that it has a special edge finish, ensuring that the substructure is completely concealed. Every panel can be removed easily by lifting and tilting.

David Harris, General Manager at Hunter Douglas Architectural, said: “As globally renowned suppliers of architectural products, we are no stranger to working on complex projects in corporate environments such as this. The stringent environmental considerations that HSBC has insisted upon lines up with our commitment to sustainability and we are delighted to have played our part in delivering this prestigious building.”

Naomi Buckley, associate director of tp bennett, said: “During the internal design process, we selected timber veneer ceiling to complement the finishes palette – taking inspiration from the natural environment.

We also used the timber veneer to provide warmth to the client meeting rooms and auditorium. Within the client floor events we wanted to use a ceiling with a visual texture which reflected the timber flooring, we also selected a panelled grill ceiling to give this effect and were really happy with the overall quality of the system.”

Hunter Douglas Architectural is committed to sustainability and responsible development through its continuous efforts to improve production processes, eliminate waste and reduce maintenance. As well as using FSC timber, it has increased the amount of recycled aluminium it uses in its ceilings, with its own produced aluminium containing 90% recycled material. All of its own production scrap is collected and re-worked into new valuable input for its melting processes.

Trust In Keys

Another threat to effective key control is 3D printing. Even patented keys can be duplicated using 3D printing software, and a quick Google search on this subject brings up millions of search results including ‘how to’ guides and videos.

In addition, changing business needs mean that traditional master keys systems lack in flexibility. This is especially true and problematic for organisations that have a number of remote sites with contractors requiring ad hoc access, or businesses with a high turnover of staff.

Convergence with CLIQ® Organisations can protect against the threat of a compromised key system and avoid such expensive replacement programmes by installing an electro-mechanical key system.

The CLIQ® online key uses Bluetooth 4.0 technology, enabling users to update keys wirelessly with a smartphone.

The connectivity provides a real time audit trail on non-wired products such as padlocks and cam locks, and access rights can be granted to the user ‘on-site’.

On the map

So what does the future hold for electromechanical key systems? Abloy® OS is one recent development that brings both visualisation and flexibility to key control, as well as providing an integrated approach to access control.

Abloy® OS is a contemporary, modular and scalable operating system - integrated with CLIQ® Web Manager - that allows users to control door environments and secure access.

Get Appy

For small to medium-sized organisations looking to remotely manage security from wherever they are, the CLIQ® Go App can help keep their business secure ‘on the go’.

The CLIQ® Go App moves security to a new dimension, enabling business owners to control security in their building and premises from their mobile device.

Features include the ability to schedule access to rooms or give contractors time-limited access. If a key is lost or stolen access can also be revoked using the CLIQ® Go App, all managed from a cloud-hosted system.

hen thinking about security, keys are often viewed as the most integral element of a system, and there is an expectation that keys will remain secure forever.

In contrast, data security is met with much more apprehension and there is greater emphasis placed on changing passwords regularly to remain secure.

In this era of technological advances, the humble key is still seen as a trusted device, which is why most automotive manufacturers still include a mechanical key with their cars years after they could have been eliminated.

What’s more, with the rise of artificial intelligence and modern computing power, an exponential jump to technology such as a quantum computer would break practically every encryption we rely on in our electronic world. Therefore, having something physical to rely on is critical.

Critical key control

Although a lot of trust is placed in keys, the importance of good key management should not be underestimated.

For instance, the consequences of lost or stolen keys particularly for secure areas and applications can be extremely expensive, a logistical nightmare and can seriously damage an organisations reputation; making sure you have control of the keys for your locks is vital.

For example, CLIQ ® is based on mechanical high security disc cylinders combined with highly encrypted electronic locking and identification.

The system allows for remote key management, providing comprehensive audit trails on locks and padlocks and the ability to electronically remove lost or stolen keys from the system, meaning security can be confidently maintained in circumstances where a key has been misplaced.

The visual map-based user interface provides role and area-based access control, with a real time situational view.

This accurate and convenient management of keys, identities and access reduces the resources required, thereby improving efficiency and user satisfaction.

The cloud-hosted system is also future-proofed to develop according to customer needs.

Owners can expand the system without disruption, with the assurance of a flexible, highly encrypted, permission-controlled security system that allows them to focus on growing their business. With all these advances in technology there really is a solution for every organisation, no matter what their size or needs.

Whether opting for electronic, mechatronic, enterprise integrated access control, or simply making life easier with app control, the future of keys is very exciting indeed.

London Bridge is safe and sound with Resiblock

As part of Network Rails £6bn Thameslink Programme the redevelopment of London Bridge Station started in 2013. It was anticipated that cleaning regimes would serve to remove the jointing sand leading to destabilisation of the paving and causing hazards such as tripping accidents.

The success of Resiblock Resiecco at a number of other high-profile and high footfall venues played a key role in the selection process of the sealer. Resiblock technicians attended and advised on application and spread rate of Resiblock Resiecco and the one coat application allowed the station to remain open during installation.

The urban environment continues to enjoy period of growth

WHILST THE INFRASTRUCTURE SECTOR REMAINS OPEN TO CONSIDERABLE VOLATILITY IN MONTHLY CONTRACT AWARD VALUES, THE SECTOR HAS REMAINED RELATIVELY ROBUST OVER THE LAST TWO YEARS WITH CONTRACT AWARDS CONSISTENTLY ABOVE THE £500 MILLION THRESHOLD.

he latest edition of the Economic & Construction Market Review from industry analysts Barbour ABI highlights levels of construction contract values awarded across Great Britain.

This month it shows the total value of construction contracts awarded in January 2019 was £5.5 billion which is 9.9% higher than December 2018 fi gures.

Looking at how these contracts were awarded across the sectors, the residential sector was the largest in January 2019 with a 28% share, followed by infrastructure with a 21% share and the commercial & retail sector with a 20% share.

Projects within the urban environment can vary from smaller, individual residential schemes to major national and international transport and infrastructure developments, such as Crossrail in London.

Manufacturers have a variety of products and systems that can be utilised across this variety of projects.

At this month’s Futurebuild exhibition, Polypipe presented new solutions to achieving urban development that fully exploits the multi-functional benefits of sustainable green infrastructure.

At the centre of the new technologies on display was the water management specialist’s Permavoid geocellular solution which, with its breakthrough integral passive irrigation system, creates opportunities for designers and developers to bring optimised green landscaping into the heart of the most challenging built environments.

“Passive irrigation is an energy and resource efficient method that enables urban green spaces of any scale to establish and flourish over the long term,” said Sean Robinson, Business Development Director for Specification at Polypipe.

“This is the key to unlocking the full potential of blue-green infrastructure. Over time, the diversity of flora and fauna increases, helping the landscape become more resilient to shortterm climate fluctuations and human disruption.

Alongside Permavoid, Polypipe displayed a number of new products that extend the performance envelope and help developers achieve construction objectives faster and more cost effectively.

Marshalls’ Kiruna Sandstone is a hardwearing, strong and durable Sandstone suitable for both pedestrian and vehicular trafficked areas.

Encasement fire sprinkler boxing reaches new heights in Wolverhampton

MORE THAN FOUR KILOMETRES OF ‘VERSA 5’ PRE-FORMED PLYWOOD FIRE SPRINKLER BOXING FROM ENCASEMENT IS BEING USED TO PROVIDE AN AESTHETIC FINISH TO THE INSTALLATION OF NEW FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEMS AT THREE LIBERTY HEIGHTS STUDENT ACCOMMODATION BLOCKS IN WOLVERHAMPTON.

perated by the UK’s second largest student accommodation provider, Liberty Living, the three blocks, one of which is 25 storeys high, provide 657 beds for students attending the nearby University of Wolverhampton and City of Wolverhampton College.

The fire sprinkler system protects corridors, kitchens, lift lobbies and public areas, in addition to the individual student rooms, and the installation was undertaken as part of an accommodation refurbishment and improvement programme by Liberty Living after acquiring the properties in early 2017.

Encasement’s pre-formed fire sprinkler boxing was chosen by the contractor as it provided a cost effective and easy to install solution to conceal the thousands of metres of orange sprinkler pipework while also providing an aesthetic finish, as the boxing is pre-finished with white melamine.

Three different sizes of 5mm thick Versa ‘L’ shaped sprinkler boxing was used on the project, as well as dedicated accessories, such as internal and external corners, to ensure that the finish to the entire sprinkler system was consistent and integrated with the building décor in each of the blocks.

To accommodate the sprinkler heads, the Versa boxing is designed to be drilled easily on-site, so that the position of the individual heads can be aligned accurately and the white cover caps can be fitted to complete the installation.

part of this process.

“We have more than 40 years experience in manufacturing and supplying pre-formed pipe boxing and decorative casings, which have been installed in countless UK and overseas projects. I’m delighted that we were chosen for Liberty Heights, which has proven to be so successful and we are currently involved in a large number of other fire sprinkler projects in social and private housing.”

R32 Hybrid VRF enjoys success with recent award win

Mitsubishi Electric’s commitment to reducing the impact of air conditioning on the environment has been recognised at the recent edie sustainability awards. The company’s R32 Hybrid VRF won the edie Low Carbon Initiative of the Year Award at the finalist’s award ceremony in London.

“As the only provider of a large scale VRF air conditioning unit using R32 refrigerant it is a real honour to be recognised by the edie sustainability awards,” said Mark Grayston, Product Marketing Department Manager at Mitsubishi Electric. “As a company we strive to deliver products that have a minimal impact on the environment, while delivering

maximum efficiency and comfort for customers.”

The unique City Multi R32 Hybrid VRF is the only VRF-type solution able to utilise the low GWP of R32 refrigerant. Mitsubishi Electric has long been a pioneer in the world of air conditioning and this unique product range puts the company at the forefront of the industry, and ahead of the on-going Phase Down of high-GWP refrigerant systems.

This innovation has also been recognised by CIBSE (the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers) where the City Multi R32 Hybrid VRF was a finalist in the Building

Performance Awards in the Products and Innovations category.

Launched in May 2018, the City Multi R32 version of the Hybrid VRF system offers a tried and tested solution to large scale VRF air conditioning with a much lower GWP. By using water as the heat transfer vehicle for the majority of the air conditioning system, R32 Hybrid VRF reduces the overall amount of refrigerant in the system, whilst bringing comfort levels normally associated with 4-pipe fan coil systems and combining this with the design flexibility, operational efficiency and advanced control that VRF is renowned for.

Market refurbishment benefits from Fibo expertise

Bathroom panels were chosen by Stevenage Borough Council for installation as part of the refurbishment of an indoor market in the town centre.

Fibo’s simple tongue-and-groove Aqualock design meant that the project was quick and easy to complete – taking just two weeks, the panels can be installed five times faster than tiles.

The existing tiles were rather dated and in need of maintenance, so those behind the mirrors and the urinals in the public toilets.

Godfrey Shaw, Building Surveyor for Stevenage Borough Council, comments:

“The new panels not only look better, with a more contemporary look; they are more cost effective to fit and keep clean. We had a limited budget for this project so it made sense all round.

“I was impressed with the service too. Fibo provided samples and gave us advice from the outset on which panels would be suitable and guidance on installation. We plan on using Fibo panels in future projects.”

Made from laminated birch, with PVC or brushed aluminium profile edges, Fibo wall panels provide a hygienic, watertight system and can be fitted directly onto walls, including tiles or stud partitioning.

NEWFOUNDLAND IS THE LATEST SOARING ADDITION TO LONDON’S CANARY WHARF ESTATE. WHEN COMPLETE, THE 60-STOREY RESIDENTIAL TOWER BEING DEVELOPED BY THE CANARY WHARF GROUP WILL PROVIDE 636 BUILD-TO-RENT APARTMENTS, OFFERING STUNNING VIEWS ACROSS THE CITY.

Any residential building over 18 metres requires enhanced fire protection to comply with Building Regulations. Newfoundland’s unique design also called for a bespoke passive fire protection system to provide peace of mind for residents while delivering a high-quality rental experience. Promat and installation sub-contractor Sharpfibre worked together to find a solution.

David Harper, technical director at Sharpfibre, explains: “Good building design and maintenance is essential to minimise the spread of a building fire. Passive fire protection systems do this by compartmentalising a building through fire-rated walls and floors and structural protection, which stops a fire from growing quickly, allowing people more time to escape and rescue teams to operate safely.

for the floor-to-ceiling heights for each apartment, compared to using standard boards. This extra room is crucial for accommodating building services like air conditioning as well as luxury conveniences such as built-in music systems.”

Using Supalux also had the added benefit of allowing the fire protection installation to be completed before the external façade works were finished. David Oram, area sales manager at Promat, explains: “The board is a calcium silicate material, which means that it is resistant to moisture and can be left exposed to the elements. This helps to speed up overall build timetables as the fire protection installation process doesn’t have to wait until external works are done.”

“At Newfoundland, our brief was to provide up to two hours’ fire resistance for the tower’s steel beams as a critical structural component. We also wanted a fire protection system that would maximise internal space to deliver the lifestyle Newfoundland’s residents expect.”

To achieve this, Promat and Sharpfibre specified Supalux – a high performance fire protection board which is non-combustible.

David Harper continues: “Supalux not only met the required technical performance but also provided an additional 8mm of space

uch is made of open-plan offi ces being good for business. Helping to maximise fl oor space, they increase the feeling of inclusivity and encouraged colleagues to integrate and collaborate. Aesthetically, they maximise fl ow of natural light and an overall modern look is achieved.

However, open-plan offices can cause workers to lack privacy and be distracted from the work at hand and result in decreased efficiency – the noise from overheard conversations, printers at work and phones ringing can cause work rates to plummet.

An all-round solution to these issues is to include glass partitions within the office’s design. CRL Langle Office Partition range which includes the standard and XL versions, both offering a creative and effective solution for modern interior designs. The dry-glazed system provides a maximum transparency and an elegant appearance thanks to its thin, powder-coated profiles available in a satin anodised, brushed nickel or matte black finish.

The profiles can be fixed to ceilings, floors, walls and door frames for a complete look and are supplied with EPDM fixing gaskets available in black or grey. With no silicone sealant required between the glass panels, a clean and neat finish is achieved with polycarbonate joints that simply clip on the glass.

The height of hinged doors can be easily adjusted and floor-to-ceiling doors can be mounted, if desired. The system effectively closes the gaping joint between the glass door, side panel and top light, making it acoustically viable.

Where noise reduction really is key to the installation, Office XL can accommodate 20 to 28mm thick insulating glass which will insulate sound up to 42dB, allowing employees to work with far less disturbance.

For a modern, urban look in any interior design, CRL’s Langle New York Office system features all the advantages of the Office XL system with a stylish, matte black frame. As all profiles are from the same series from CRL, the system is

connectable via original angle connectors for a flexible partitioning system that meets the needs of the specifier, installer and end user.

New York Office is simple to fit and requires no special tools or glass cut-out for assembly; simply plug and play. Installed without notches, the entire system is screwed in and dry-glazed, minimising installation time and making it ideal for fitting retrospectively too.

Vertical and horizontal profiles can be positioned as desired, which allows for a versatile design to be created depending on individual requirements. Such solutions overcome many of the common practical challenges of open-plan office environments, creating an upmarket and productive ambience where colleagues can work together collaboratively.

ultra-thin energy-efficiency boosting units

PILKINGTON UNITED KINGDOM LIMITED, PART OF THE NSG GROUP, HAS SIGNED UP FIVE NEW DEALERS TO SUPPLY PILKINGTON SPACIA™ TO CUSTOMERS ACROSS THE UK.

Pilkington Spacia™ is a vacuum insulated unit that has the thickness of single glazing but the insulating performance of double glazing, having a Ug-value of 1.1W/(m2.K).

Standard Pilkington Spacia™ STII has an overall thickness of 6.2mm, which is roughly a quarter of the thickness of standard double-glazing units.

The new distributors are Energlaze, Gowecroft Joinery, Grosvenor Restoration, Glass Services and Wm. Mallen Joinery.

The firms each have extensive experience in installing the product and are each supported by the manufacturer’s own team.

Tony Smith, business development manager at Pilkington United Kingdom Limited, said: “Maintaining and refurbishing older, traditional buildings has to be done with a great deal of

sensitivity, especially when it comes to the glazing, which often defines the aesthetics of a building more than any other element.

“Of course, upgrading the performance of the windows is also one of the most important steps in improving the energy efficiency and acoustics of a property, so it’s often high on the wish list for those looking after older buildings.

“These carefully selected distributors of Pilkington Spacia™ are all specialists in this type of glazing, which often includes conservation projects, and they are also directly supported with advice and guidance from us. The product and service offering we’ve created through these collaborations will help make boosting the performance of glazing in older buildings as effortless as it can be.”

Pilkington – Enquiry 39

Pilkington Spacia™

Revolutionary vacuum glazing technology Pilkington Spacia ™ , provides the energyefficiency of modern double glazing, but in a unit that’s typically only a quarter of the thickness.

The solution provides high levels of thermal performance while having the profile of single glazing, at only 6.2mm thick. It helps to boost energy-efficiency in buildings without having to replace original frames or compromise on heritage aesthetics.

St Gerard’s school near Dublin recently reduced its need for heating by using Pilkington Spacia™

The glazing was sensitively installed within the 150-year-old building’s original large, timber sash-frames that are typical of Georgian architecture – retaining the property’s historic charm.

More investments in efficiency at The Window Company

Award winning commercial installer The Window Company (Contracts) attributes much of its success to being able to manage projects more efficiently than just about anybody else.

As part of its commitment to staying ahead of the competition, it has just appointed Patrick Holt as an additional Contracts Supervisor, to help ensure that both its refurbishment and new build projects continue to run on time and on budget. Patrick has worked in the construction industry for his entire career – progressing from labourer to assistant site manager, and is bringing all of that real world know-how to the new role.

Minimalist access for city office

Situated in the heart of Birmingham’s commercial quarter, the Colmore Building has undergone a £3.5m enhancement project and now offers 310,000 sq ft of highly specified office space.

A full glass, manual revolving door, manufactured and installed by TORMAX, delivers elegant and efficient access into tenanted office space. Adjacent to this, two TORMAX automatic swing doors have been installed either side of an existing revolving door, creating a comprehensive entrance into the spacious main reception.

The manual revolving door creates a contemporary frontage commensurate with any high-end office facility, whilst delivering a solution that allows smooth pedestrian access. Maintaining the minimalist aesthetics of the predominantly glass reception area, the Swiss-designed TORMAX iMotion 1401 operators that drive the swing doors, are neatly concealed in steel casings set into the floorspace, delivering automation without the need for external operators. With an impressive lifespan, the iMotion 1401 motors are unique in that they do not feature any of the parts that usually wear out, such as gears and brushes.

This dramatically reduces the need for ongoing maintenance and keeps the doors working more efficiently for longer.

International design practice Ryder

Architecture’s Newcastle and Vancouver teams have become one of the first practices to produce a specification in the cloud using NBS Chorus, the new flagship platform from NBS.

The specification platform has not only provided Ryder with a new level of collaboration across its global business, but the cloud-technology has enabled the team to develop their specifications in the office, on-site, and even mid-flight from the UK to Canada.

The two-year project is a heritage restoration site in Vancouver, St. Andrew’s Wesley United

Church, so the choice to use NBS Chorus with its UK and Canadian content libraries was another benefit to the whole team.

Adam James, principal of Ryder’s Vancouver team, said: “NBS Chorus is a welcome addition to Ryder’s digital toolkit of collaborative design tools. The data driven framework of Chorus allows us to rapidly specify building components and materials in manner that integrates with our existing building information modelling tools, while working in geographically distributed teams.”

Aimed at those professionals who need to produce high quality specifications efficiently, NBS Chorus is a pioneering collaborative specification platform, which supports global design and construction.

he travel hub - part of the Telford Shopping Centre - has undergone a £1.9 million refurbishment and transformed an “out-of-date” terminus to a light and airy atrium geared to improve passenger experience.

The new Telford Bus Station separates the transport and customer areas with a bank of automatic doors powered by the GEZE Slimdrive SL NT operators. Each set of doors is fitted with a GEZE laser scanner LZR® sensor – a new product devised for use in environments that have specific and demanding requirements.

The movement sensors provide a threedimensional protection of the monitored area which initiate door openings at the optimum time. This is a massive boon to passenger safety as the automatic doors stay closed – activated only when the bus is parked and in position. This protects passengers from wandering into the area when bus manoeuvres are taking place.

As LZR scanners are fitted to the doors they are easier to install and are more aesthetically pleasing than sensor loops which need to be embedded into the ground and sealed with bitumen in order to install. Sensor loops also deteriorate over time and can be expensive and awkward to replace.

They not only make an ideal safety barrier but also add to the improved aesthetic of the station. With a height of just 7cm – Slimdrive SL NT operators are almost invisible, virtually silent in operation and can move leaf weights of up to 125kg.

They are ideal for buildings with high levels of footfall and a continuous flow of people heading in and out of the building.

Integrated within the shopping centre, the bus station acts as a ‘hub and spoke’ operation for the borough’s transport network and is intended to boost economic growth by encouraging increasing visitor numbers into to the town and providing an “attractive gateway”. The re-development is a partnership between Telford Shopping Centre, Arriva and Telford & Wrekin Council which secured £1.3 million for the Marches Local Enterprise Partnership towards the improved bus station facility.

The improvements are part of a wider programme of expansion and modernisation costing £200 million and coincided with Telford 50 – the golden anniversary of the creation of Telford as a new town.

Andy Howland, Sales and Marketing Director for GEZE UK: “The redevelopment of Telford Bus Station has significantly improved the facilities for commuters using public transport and making it a pleasurable experience.

“We are delighted that GEZE technology has helped bring about some of this change and delivered a solution that is effective, efficient and brings real benefits to bus station operations and the people who use such an important transport hub.”

Matt Powell, network and transport group manager at Telford & Wrekin Council: “The provision of intelligent access solutions at bus loading points was a key part of improving safety in the new building. The solution provided has been a great success, and helped us meet this objective without any manual intervention.”

ixams Retirement Village near Bedford, is owned and operated by Extracare, the same company who’s Lark Hill Retirement Village was featured in the 2018 Channel 4 series of ‘Old People’s Homes for 4 year olds’. The purpose built village will provide 230, one and two bedroom apartments for the over 55’s in its six acre green field setting.

“This is an exciting project that we were delighted to work on as it provides alternative lifestyles for those approaching or nearing retirement age whilst encouraging community and social engagement,” said Jim Lowther sales director Xtralite. “Great thought has gone into the design of the building and the inclusion of extensive rooflights ensures areas of the building are flooded with natural light which has been proven to improve wellbeing, especially during the darker months.”

Three sections of the construction project benefitted from Xtralite roofing solutions and its X-Span range of product. One area being the Winter Garden residential area which is a single glazed atrium over a five storey building and includes louvered ventilation.

The Village Centre roof itself benefitted from argon filled double glazed panels and was thermally enhanced to elevate the comfort of users in the central atrium of the village, the location of health spa, bar, gym and other communal facilities.

Its design is visually striking creating a focal point merging visual aesthetics and practicality. This area also had smoke vents fitted to meet smoke ventilation building regulations.

Both were sizeable installations measuring over 40m in length and up to 12m in width highlighting how X-Span is entirely versatile and can encompass varieties of style, design and ventilation to fulfi both aesthetic, safety and ventilation demands and legal requirements.

Finally, the self-supporting trapezium styled entrance canopy had single glazed panels from the X-Span range creating a striking visual effect upon arrival at the village. Mark Jarman Senior Project Manager at Galliford Try commented; “Xtralite has a good reputation in the industry for quality products and reliability and this was important to us when choosing our structural glazing specialist.

“Pleasingly, the process concerning Xtralite was seamless and we are very pleased with the finished elements of the project.”

X-Span remains a popular choice of glazing system. Capable of utilising glass, or lightweight lumira and polycarbonate. In the case of Wixams, glass was used for its clarity and far superior sound attenuation.

“X-Span is a great looking and very practical choice for atria, canopies and entrance ways and was ideally suited to the situations in this particular project,” said Jim.

“In addition to practicality and the visual aspect it also complies with BS6399 system Part 1 (Code of Practice for dead and imposed loads), Part 2 (Code of Practice for wind loads) and Part 3 (Code of Practice for imposed/snow loads) delivering a premium solution of aesthetics and practicality.”

Technology is driving innovation for manufacturers

olarlux designed, delivered and installed a stunning wintergarden balcony glazing solution to the a project at Geron Way London – an exciting development of intelligently considered and design-led luxury high-end apartments at the heart of a dynamic regeneration of a former Parcel Force depot in Cricklewood, North West London.

The SL 45 fixed balcony glazing combined with the SL 25 slide and stack top section was chosen as the perfect solution for the Geron Way development.

The optimum impermeability, stability and additional security offered by these products, make them ideal for use on the 216 balconies as they exceed all the relevant increased wind loading requirements, whilst also providing a quiet living space due to significant noise reduction.

This glazing system offers full protection against adverse weather conditions and when the glass panels are opened fully, residents can truly appreciate the large landscaped garden within the centre of the development, from the peace of their balcony.

These products were chosen to provide residents with full protection from the elements during inclement weather but still allowing natural light to flood through the property on sunnier days, bringing a homely warmth to relax and unwind. As part of a £5 million infrastructure development for Bournemouth University, a new bus hub has been built to offer bus passengers a highquality purpose-built facility for their journeys to and from the Talbot campus.

Together with Atkins architects, Able Canopies designed and erected two bespoke canopies providing shelter for the hub and incorporating transparent photovoltaic glass technology into an attractive, practical and modern design.

Able Canopies’ successful Dual-Pitch free standing Kensington was an ideal solution, allowing for the easy incorporation of the additional elements required by the site.

It’s a fast-moving, ever-changing world we live in. So at Pilkington we are always looking for ways to evolve our products to meet the challenges of the present and the future.

By identifying emerging social trends, keeping abreast of customer needs and constantly seeking out new technologies, we equip ourselves with the knowledge required to lead the next step-change. This helps us shape the future and solve some of tomorrow’s most pressing issues.

In our drive to constantly question what’s possible and in our determination to offer the best and broadest range of products, we ensure that glass is and always will be the world’s material of choice.

Two Kensington canopies were created, measuring approximately 22 by 5 metres each, from a powder coated and hot dip galvanised steel frame and ten-millimetre thick toughened glass panels, alongside the solar glass inserts.

Bespoke rounded glass end panels were also fitted to each end of the hub to create a stylish finish. Having previously used the Kensington on installations where solar power was required, the Able Canopies team knew that solar integration would be possible, as requested by the Bournemouth University specification.

Throughout this process Able Canopies worked closely with the solar glass provider and with some minor alterations to the system the panels were able to fit perfectly into the Kensington roof.

Scott Leeder, Director at VELUX Commercial GB & IRE, comments: “Optimum levels of natural light and ventilation in the classroom have been shown to improve educational performance by 8%. These levels can be achieved by incorporating skylights into the building design.

Our new CPD is developed specifically for architects, developers and contractors working on the build of educational facilities. It will provide a better understanding of the benefits of specifying modular rooflights to meet with the most up to date building regulations and requirements. We’re confident that the sessions will be of great value to everyone that attends.”

A part of the VELUX Group, VELUX Commercial designs, manufactures and markets daylight solutions for commercial buildings such as offices, schools, healthcare facilities, airports, shopping malls and retail stores, large public buildings, railway stations and industrial buildings.

Designed with architects in mind, VELUX Commercial Modular skylights are fully prefabricated offsite, making it easy for architects and developers to create larger, naturally lit spaces.

The range provides solutions for classrooms, atriums, narrow corridors, internal courts, studios and large circulation spaces. Each roof glazing solution is delivered with a special prefabricated flashing ensuring a perfect fit and 100% water tightness.

Howells Patent Glazing has launched its new roof vent system, which is designed to integrate with the company’s patent glazing bars and is also compatible with other systems.

For complete flexibility, it can be accommodated into any application with overhead glazing, both single and double glazed. The vent attains the best achievable results when independently tested (Wintech) for air permeability, water tightness and wind resistance.

With a five-year warranty, the new vent system comprises electrically operated opening ventilators connected to an open/close switch or digital control panel with rain sensor and thermostat. The vent can be managed using a manual worm gear & operating pole.

VELUX Commercial, a new division under the VELUX Brand which offers daylight solutions for commercial buildings, has launched a new RIBA approved Continual Professional Development (CPD) programme for architects working in the education sector.

The CPD, ‘Under the Rooflight: Spotlight on Education’, is included on RIBA’s core curriculum under Design, Construction and Technology, with a General Awareness knowledge level. It offers a review of the latest regulatory changes in the design and construction of education buildings specifically relating to rooflights, as well as a look at the benefits of natural light and ventilation.

Architects will also gain a better understanding on the key factors that should be taken into consideration when specifying rooflights for educational facilities to meet the revised requirements.

The complete range of architectural glazing systems from leading UK manufacturer Kawneer feature on a flagship building for the University of Warwick.

Kawneer’s AA®100 curtain walling, AA®541 windows, AA®720 doors and AA®100 slope glazing have been used on the Mathematical Sciences Building on the university’s main central campus on the outskirts of Coventry.

The zone-drained curtain walling with 50mm sightlines, top and side-hung casement windows and thermally superior doors feature throughout the lecture rooms while the series 190 heavy-duty doors have been used at the entrances and the zone-drained slope glazing in the atrium.

They were installed over five months by a team of six from approved dealer APiC UK for main contractor Morgan Sindall and included extended vertical caps to the curtain walling on the south-west elevation.

Manufactured to British Standards using extruded aluminium alloy, the vent is supplied in mill finish and can be anodized or powder coated in a wide range of colours.

EDPM glazing seals offer excellent longterm performance. Howells’ recommends a minimum roof pitch of 10 degrees. Lower pitches can be achieved but are reliant on perishable silicone seals.

The Ultimetal fabric with the high levels of solar refl ectance and low levels of emissivity a orded by its metallised coating provide industry leading levels of shading performance. The 50+ years’ experience of weaving glass-fi bre based shading fabrics producing the highest levels of performance from the thinnest of materials. The Ultimetal fabric is less than one quarter of a millimetre thick, permitting a blind of over 3.0 metres in height to be stored in a cassette of less than 55mm square. Powder coated to match the window frames, the blinds become almost invisible.

Light transmission levels for the fabric in single figures can remove glare, improving workspaces and comfort zones alike. Solar reflectance (Rs) of over 70% can reduce heat gain through the glass by 25%, 40% to over 50% dependant on glass properties. The blinds also improve the insulation of the window by 15%, 20%, 30% or more, reducing temperature loss.

pecialising in the creation of wrought iron windows and doors - Meca Welding worked with the owners of the property to specify an exterior folding door solution for the property. The project brief required a system which could be fully opened during the warmer months and securely closed off during the winter - whilst also considering the architectural style and design aesthetics of the building.

Vincent Campforts, General Manager at Meca Welding, commented “We opted for glazed doors with a black wrought iron frame in order to match the homes modern interior. Due to the slim profile and minimalistic design of the doors, it was important that the hardware used to create the folding mechanism would complement the doors exactly.”

P C Henderson’s Securefold 100 exterior folding door hardware was identified as the best solution for the project.

“After carrying out some online research, we came across P C Henderson. We contacted the companies Holland office and arranged a visit to their showroom where we could view some of the systems first hand. After viewing Securefold we knew it was the perfect system for our project – it was secure, versatile, sleek in design and readily available in the matt black finish we were looking for”, continued Vincent.

Due to Securefold’s multiple configuration options and high levels of flexibility, Meca Welding was able to provide its customer with a system that met their exact requirements – 6 panels folding inwards to one side –providing a completely clear opening for those warm summer months.

Rene van den Biggellaar, Business Unit Manager at P C Henderson commented “Securefold is an all-encompassing system – its high levels of flexibility means that it can be used for almost any exterior folding door solution. We were delighted to be able to work with Meca Building on this project and see our hardware combined with the

wrought iron doors they created – it created an impressive contemporary style and it was great to see our Securefold system used in this way”.

P C Henderson’s Securefold folding door hardware is available in four different hinge options (standard, mortice radius, mortice squared and non-mortice), four stunning finishes (black, gold, satin and chrome), top hung and bottom rolling variants and a range of door configurations to suit both inward and outward opening. The system is manufactured using marine grade 316

stainless steel making it ideal for exterior and coastal use.

Boundary protection

ire and smoke curtains can be used to divide buildings such as warehouses or large open spaced retail units into compartments; to close openings in compartment walls or ceilings; or to close open compartment shafts such as escalators or stairwells. They are also used to protect atria and lift lobbies within buildings. However, an increasingly important application is that of boundary protection to prevent vertical fire and smoke spread or to tackle building proximity issues.

Coopers Fire suggests that fire barrier curtains have an important role to play both in upgrading existing buildings retrospectively to improve life safety, as well as in protecting new projects at the point of design or construction. Fire curtains can offer a practical solution, particularly in refurbishment situations where glazing façade systems such curtain walling may be too expensive to upgrade, or incapable of being upgraded to meet the environmental requirements.

Coopers Fire also believes that fire curtains are ideal for applications where notional boundaries are infringed due to the proximity of new buildings to existing buildings or sheer building density. They can also assist

in preventing vertical fire spread from floor to floor, which potentially could compromise horizontal evacuation.

Coopers Fire has developed a wide range of fire and smoke curtains to protect every type of building application, from protecting means of escape, to providing buildings with a system that offers effective fire and smoke compartmentation. It also offers a range of fire barrier curtains to meet the specific needs of boundary protection, providing architects and engineers with an approved alternative to fire shutters, fire-rated glazing and firewalls, whilst protecting windows from fire.

Each curtain can be individually engineered to blend in with building features and décor, offering the necessary fire protection, without compromising the aesthetics of the building. All of the vertical Fire Barrier Curtains offered by Coopers Fire can offer boundary protection and are a perfect solution to prevent the spread of fire in and between tall buildings.

Coopers’ FireMaster Plus fire barrier system can be installed on windows to prevent the fire from entering the building from the outside, spreading from one building to the next or from the inside to the fascia on

the outside or to nearby buildings in close proximity. The FireMaster Plus2 offers 180 minutes of integrity (E) and 90 minutes of radiance (EW).

Coopers Fire has installed boundary protection fire curtains in an iconic building in Dover Street London, where there is a high density of tall buildings. At Dover Street, fire curtains provide protection to an existing building where non-rated glazing was chosen to protect the notional boundary but there were plans to extend the height of an opposite building.

DRU announces updates to Spartherm wood fire inserts range

THE RANGE IS STREAMLINED INTO TWO GROUPS - DESIGN AND LINEAR - WITH A NEW BROCHURE AND MARKETING CAMPAIGN PLANNED FOR THE UK. SELECTED MODELS WILL BE DISPLAYED AT HEARTH & HOME EXHIBITION IN JUNE 2019.

RU is the official UK distributor for the German designed and made Spartherm range of wood stoves and wood fire inserts.

To support the marketing and distribution of the Spartherm brand in the UK, DRU has announced a streamlining of the inserts range, to be followed by a new UK brochure and promotional campaign from April 2019.

Spartherm wood fire inserts are available in front view, 2-sided, 3-sided and tunnel versions. They are all Eco Design ready, with high energy efficiency and many sophisticated functions that make them suitable for traditional or contemporary homes.

They are of particular interest to architects and interior designers, who are looking for high end, high specification fires and stoves.

One of the principle distinguishing features of Spartherm wood fi res is their manual or automatic vertically sliding door mechanisms, which provide easy access to the interiors of the fi res in order to replace the logs and for cleaning and maintenance.

The new wood fire inserts range is now divided into the Linear series, which has door handles that are an integral part of the frame and the Design series, in which the handle is a separate, detachable component for a more seamless finish.

Another unique feature of the Spartherm inserts range is the exclusive S-Thermatik NEO app for smartphones and tablets.

When combined with the fire’s operating system, the app enables the user to remotely control the air flow in the fire and the temperature in the home using a simple graphic display.

Other features of the range include an air wash system to keep the glass clean, a soft-close concealed door-locking mechanism, a userfriendly air slide and a simple hinged ash tray.

The new Spartherm inserts brochure will be available in both printed and interactive digital versions, along with informative videos to use in dealer showrooms.

In addition, selected Spartherm wood stoves and fires will be displayed on the DRU stand C35 at Hearth & Home, the UK’s premier fireplace trade show in Harrogate, 9 – 11 June 2019. For further information, visit www.drufire.com

notable life-saving solution in the STG-Beikirch range is the Smoke Pressure System (SPS). The greatest threat to life in fire-related incidents is not the fire itself, but the smoke generated from burning contents.

In the event of a fire, SPS– also known as overpressure ventilation systems– save lives by ensuring escape and rescue routes remain smoke-free for building occupants and firefighters. If a fire occurs, the SPS detects smoke and floods the escape and rescue areas with fresh air, keeping smoke out.

Experience and expertise in SPS solution design and provision has positioned STGBeikirch as the supplier of choice for smoke management solutions, with key decision makers trusting our ability to make iconic, multi-functional buildings smoke safe for vast volumes of occupants. These projects include the 50,000 m2 Deutsche Börse building in Frankfurt, that houses over 2,000

employees. In the same city, the company has installed solutions in the 16-storey Alpha Rotex complex and the 51-storey Tower 185. While, in Dusseldorf, projects include the Andreas Quartier and Sky Office. This year promises to be another busy one for the

business, which is now known as Kingspan Light + Air STG, with orders made for SPS installations in some of the most exciting and innovative buildings currently in construction.

looks to the future with a stylish collection of Ecodesign Ready, low emission stoves

THERE HAS BEEN A LOT OF TALK IN THE MEDIA RECENTLY ABOUT EMISSIONS, EITHER FROM DIESEL OR WOODBURNING STOVES, AND ALSO OPEN FIRES. SO NOW IT’S TIME TO MAKE SURE YOUR NEW STOVE IS ECODESIGN READY.

esigned to reduce PM (particle matter) emissions by burning wood more efficiently and completely, Mendip’s Ecodesign Ready models are futureproof and eco-friendly, already meeting the emissions and efficiency criteria for Ecodesign which comes into effect in 2022.

An open fire burns in a ratio of approximately 80:20. That is 80% of the heat is lost up the chimney, with only 20% of the heat being retained into the room, a huge amount of wasted heat. But it is more than that, along with the heat going up the chimney, there are high levels of emissions and particulates,

and it is these that are concerning the government, especially in high-density living area, our towns and cities.

“Our stoves have all been tested by an independent test laboratory, and will emit approximately 80% fewer particles than a stove manufactured 20 years ago, and approximately 90% fewer than an open fire. That not only helps save the environment, but also helps your pocket!” Explains the MD of Mendip Stoves, Chris Baines.

“Once you have decided on the best ecofriendly stove, the next consideration is what wood to buy. The number one no-no is wet wood collected from your garden! The best wood to burn is kiln-dried wood. There is a standard – set by HETAS, called Woodsure – and this will certify that the wood has a less than 20% moisture content. Some kiln driers use waste wood for the drying process, instead of oil, which further completes the carbon-neutral circle. And if you ensure that the wood is sourced in the UK, and dried here, it will help reduce transportation

implications on the environment.

“The added advantage of using very low moisture content wood, is that it burns much more efficiently, so less wood will be used, which will actually have a positive effect on the cost of running the stove.”

When looking for a new or replacement stove, there are plenty of practical and aesthetic elements to consider - the heat output, the ease of installation and the overall design.

“Whatever style of stove you’re looking for, it makes sense to move to an Ecodesign Ready model now,” says Chris. “Air quality will be improved as wood is burned more efficiently, which in turn gives homeowners the cleanest, cosiest environment in which to spend time with family and friends. We are proud to do our part in helping consumers reduce emissions whilst burning a carbon neutral fuel.”

Specify with Schlüter - hydronic underfloor heating

LOOKING FOR THE PERFECT SOLUTION FOR HYDRONIC UNDERFLOOR HEATING FOR TILE AND STONE? SCHLÜTER-SYSTEMS’ QUICK REACTING AND ENERGY-EFFICIENT MODULAR SYSTEM KEEPS BUILD-UP LOW AND HELPS YOU TO ACHIEVE A LASTING FINISH.

Hydronic (or ‘wet’) systems are ideal for large scale coverage and ‘whole-house’ scenarios. Designed to heat the air within a room as well as the surface covering, they are a primary heat source and can therefore replace radiators, connecting directly to a boiler.

Although installation is more expensive than with an electric system, running costs are cheaper. Hydronic systems can be powered by a number of different fuel sources, including ground source heat pumps, and as well as warming a space can also be used for gentle passive cooling during the summer months.

Schlüter®-BEKOTEC-THERM is the patented hydronic underfloor heating solution with an ultra-low construction height. A screed height of just 8mm above the studs of the panels is all that is required, which results in quicker

warm-up times as well as considerable material and weight savings in comparison to other wet systems. A building can also be put into use more rapidly as there is no need to wait weeks for the screed to cure before tiles are installed.

BEKOTEC-THERM can be configured to work with Building Management Systems (BMS) and a number of variants suitable for retrofitting are available. Schlüter-Systems can also provide a full design service for all BEKOTEC-THERM installations, with our experts ensuring that the system is used to its full potential.

In addition to ceramic tiles and natural stone coverings, other coverings such as parquet, laminates or carpet can be installed in conjunction with the BEKOTEC-THERM system.

Evinox Energy supplies Canary Wharf’s new district

A NEW URBAN DISTRICT IS BEING CREATED IN LONDON’S CANARY WHARF, WOOD WHARF, HAS BEEN DESIGNED TO PROVIDE A NEW RESIDENTIAL LED, MIXED USE, WATERSIDE COMMUNITY AND IS EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETED BY 2023.

orking with the developer, Canary Wharf Group (CWG), in combination with SES Engineering Services, Emico and Haydon Mechanical & Electrical contractors, Evinox Energy supplied heating and cooling interface units for 1330 apartments for the first phases of this development, with more to follow for the remaining phases.

Homes are all connected to a district heating network, with each apartment featuring a ModuSat XR-ECO Twin Plate heat interface unit for the supply of heating and hot water and a ModuSat Single Plate interface unit to provide cooling.

Interface units were tested by BSRIA as a requirement of this project, something Evinox were happy to undertake, confident their first-class product manufacturing and performance would exceed the required results.

In addition to the efficient performance of the ModuSat units, Evinox equipment was also chosen due to the flexibility of manufacturing and short delivery timescales. “On-time” delivery schedules were critical for this project, as some of the equipment was being built into prefabricated pods by a third party prior to delivery to site.

One of the key components used in every ModuSat HIU, is the high efficiency plate

heat exchanger from SWEP, who are a world-leading supplier of brazed plate heat exchangers for HVAC and industrial applications. Evinox’s ModuSat XR-ECO HIU delivers impressive, ultra-low DHW return temperatures to the primary network by incorporating SWEP high efficiency domestic hot water plate heat exchangers with volumetrics that encourage turbulent flow.

Inside products insight

Taking sustainability and innovation to new heights, Fabscrap has been designed to reduce waste, by turning the excess chip mix from the production runs of Sphera – Forbo’s premium homogeneous vinyl collection – into vibrant floor coverings that resembles a colourful terrazzo and is suitable for an array of environments.

Janet Lowe, Head of Marketing UK and Ireland at Forbo Flooring Systems, said: “Fabscrap is a unique design concept and is a fabulous solution for material that would otherwise end up in the recycled backing of our other vinyl products. Using start-up chip waste from standard production runs of Forbo Sphera Element, Fabscrap offers customers a truly unique and bespoke floor covering with an element of surprise to the playful design.

“The one constant is the background colour of the Fabscrap mix, as the granules are taken from selected Sphera Element baseline colours, but the final colour combination is created using excess chips from other existing Element colourways. As each batch of chip material is different, the exact content of the colourful mix cannot be influenced – resulting in a spectacular and completely unique play of colours every time.”

Specifiers can choose from four standard Sphera Element colourways for the base layer: Mortar, China Blue, White and Mid Neutral Grey. This base layer accounts for 40% of the final Fabscrap colour and these colours are readily available for projects that

require a quick turnaround. However, for a more bespoke design option, any single Sphera Element colour can be used as the base of the Fabscrap mix if desired.

The base layer colour is then combined with 60% of mixed chips taken from the Sphera production runs, which will usually consist of seven to eight bright colours, depending on what is available at the time. Colours in the mix will vary per production run leading to random and bespoke outcomes. The excess chip mix creates an entirely new floor visual that offers striking design opportunities.

Phthalate free, the multi-coloured speckled design of Fabscrap will contribute to healthier indoor environments, making it ideal for most application areas including retail, leisure, hospitality, healthcare and education. The floor covering can be used as a stand-alone option, installed alongside its corresponding Sphera Element colours or combined with other Fabscrap items for an eye-catching and whimsical effect.

Janet concluded: “At Forbo we aim to create better environments and as such, we are conscious about the way we manufacture our floor coverings; we try to reduce, recycle and reuse waste and excess production materials wherever we can. Fabscrap re-uses virgin raw materials and is made in a zero-waste environment; the concept demonstrates a real example of craftmanship and improvisation, as we are able to provide a unique stamp in every floor covering.”

The Project Manager for Mezzanine International, Andy Parsons, commented: “This is a very large two-tier mezzanine, which has been designed and tendered for using Hadley Group’s dedicated DesignSuite Pro software package.

The company also offered us an attractive volume discount to assist in our bid. Furthermore, the regularity of the design – on a 5.0 x 5.4 metre grid – means there is a minimal list of

components required, but we are still taking a delivery of three lorry loads from Hadley Group’s Midland premises every week.”

DesignSuite Pro is an intuitive and customisable software package that supports the design and specification of projects based on Hadley Group’s cold rolled, high strength, lightweight UltraZed™ purlins and UltraBeam side rails and floor beams making project planning and specifying easier than ever before.

Nothing cheeky about AluK’S Nandos installation

Diagonally shaped curtain walling leaning outward and without a singular regular pane of glass or panelling beyond the doors is just the sort of challenge which AluK relishes.

This single storey installation, at the newly opened Nandos restaurant and EE store on the Orbital Shopping Park in Swindon, enabled the specialist aluminium systems company to demonstrate both the versatility of its product range and its ability to create project solutions for clients.

It features AluK’s SL52 flexible capped curtain walling system throughout, with an entrance door fabricated using the suited GT55TB door system.

The diagonal design and irregular angles meant that AluK had to create a solution with multiple

transom and mullion sections which was cost effective, while still being true to the aesthetic and meeting the static considerations and performance requirements laid out.

The biggest issue was designing out the drainage and connections of the system, which AluK’s expert technical team successfully achieved by working alongside the architects in a 3D environment from an early stage, without compromising on any aspect of the overall design.

In fact, to maintain the consistency of the design, AluK also utilised its proven pressure plate and cover cap within the roof soffits, using a bespoke clamp fitted through the cladding system.

Levolux

The new Aerospace Integration Research Centre (AIRC) at Cranfield University in Bedfordshire is equipped with innovative, energy-saving technology, including a distinctive external solar shading solution from Levolux. To optimise façade performance, Levolux devised a unique arrangement of fabric-covered vertical fins to shield glazing from direct sunlight. Levolux engineered 30 vertical fins for the project, each comprising a series of aluminium frames, with front and rear tubular nosings. The fabricated frames or panels are wrapped externally in a specially selected dark grey solar control fabric. They block out up to 97% of the sun’s energy.

Sika and partners celebrate winning project in specification awards

MARKET-LEADING SINGLE PLY ROOFING MANUFACTURER SIKA SARNAFIL, ARCHITECTS CULLINAN STUDIO AND ROOFING CONTRACTORS CAMBRIDGE (RCC) ARE CELEBRATING FOLLOWING A WIN AT THE FIRST-EVER AJ SPECIFICATION AWARDS.

The roof refurbishment of the Central Building at Cambridge University’s Fitzwilliam College – one of the first major projects to use a pioneering, new approach to Sika Sarnafil’s products – came out on top in the Roofing and Drainage category.

In what was a skilful collaboration between Sarnafil, Cullinan and RCC, the judges agreed there was something special about the way this unique brutalist building had been beautifully protected.

Comprising protruding ‘scalloped’ detailing, an innovative waterproofing solution was created to refurbish the highly complex roof, all without visually altering the original 1960s Denys Lasdun design.

Sika Sarnafil’s single ply membrane and Sikalastic 621 – a liquid-applied product typically used for areas with complex detailing – were used across large areas. This pairing of systems was further enhanced by Sika Refurbishment’s SikaFloor 420.

Sika Limited’s concrete products were also specified for the build by concrete repair contractors Gunite Eastern. Sika’s innovative concrete repair system included a steel corrosion inhibitor. Sika® FerroGard®-903+, which penetrates the concrete and forms a protective monomolecular layer on the surface of the reinforcing steel, was used alongside Sika MonoTop® repair mortars.

Marley expands dry verge range

Marley has launched a new dry verge specifically designed to complement its popular Ashmore double interlocking plain tile.

Developed to meet housebuilder demand for a slimmer aesthetic, the Ashmore Dry Verge has a sleek and stylish design and comes in sections, so it can easily create a maintenancefree, traditional stepped verge appearance.

In addition, the new Ashmore Dry Verge is much narrower in comparison to other existing products on the market, yet still has the in-built features that make it easier to fix to British Standards.

make it quicker and simpler for housebuilders to meet BS 8612 and BS 5534 requirements.

Its outstanding weather performance also protects against water run-off, preventing staining on the verge and gable end walls.

The Ashmore Dry Verge is supplied in individual units, rather than a continuous verge, to easily create a traditional stepped verge appearance.

The concrete was finished with Sikagard®550W, a high-performance anti-carbonation coating, with crack-bridging capabilities, that protects the concrete, while meeting the aesthetic requirements of the structure.

Sika has a wide range of products available for most applications within the construction industry, which can range from waterproofing, flooring, concrete, sealing and bonding, facade, roofing and refurbishment applications, as well as teams of specialists available to advise on specific projects.

The BMI Redland Heathland Ember is a concrete plain tile featuring variation in hanging length, irregular sides and subtle surface texturing, finished with randomly applied fine sands.
