Sport England protected more than 1,000 playing fields between April 2022 and March 2023, new figures show.
The annual playing field statistics show it protected 1,007 in the year to March 2023, continuing its commitment to protecting and enhancing playing fields across England.
Sport England’s commitment means 94% of all concluded planning applications involving a playing field have resulted in improved or safeguarded facilities, according to the data.
Director of planning and active environments, Nick Evans, is pleased with the continued efforts of the planning team.
“The figures once again demonstrate Sport England’s unwavering commitment to protecting and enhancing playing fields,” he said.
“Playing fields are a vital resource that offer flexible opportunities to take part in
sport and physical activity, providing wide ranging health and wellbeing benefits to communities across England.
“We are pleased to see the importance of our role has recently been endorsed by a government planning inspector in relation to a proposed housing scheme on a playing fi eld in Yardley, Birmingham, who in dismissing the planning appeal gave great weight to Sport England’s objection to its loss.
“This was just one of over 1000 applications that Sport England were consulted on over the year that culminated in safeguarded or improved provision.
“It’s crucial we continue to protect these spaces to enable people, regardless of their background to be active in their local communities.”
Sport England must be consulted whenever anyone wants to develop on a playing field and we’ll always object if we
believe sports provision in the community will be diminished as a result.
The new data, which covers the 2022/23 financial year, shows it continues to act to protect and enhance playing fi elds across the country.

Prioritise outdoor play to give children best start in life
The government will fail to meet its aim to radically improve the health of children and young people unless its addresses the critical role of the built environment, argues a new report published today by the Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA).
Raising the healthiest generation in history Raising the healthiest generation in history builds on the insights from over 130 individuals and organisations who submitted evidence as part of a government inquiry on children and young people and the built environment earlier this year.
The report has been written by the TCPA in collaboration with the group who called for the inquiry: Playing Out, Fields in Trust, childhood expert Tim Gill and architect Dinah Bornat.
The 2024 Labour party manifesto committed to ‘raise the healthiest generation of children in our history’. But the current national picture creates cause for concern.
Children and young people’s physical and mental health is in serious, long-term decline, and is exacerbated by poverty and inequality.
By the time they reach 15-years old, the UK’s children report having the lowest average life satisfaction compared to their peers in 26 other European countries.
Landscape Institute responds to ‘Plan for Change’
The Landscape Institute welcomes the latest updates from the government about its ‘Plan for Change’, which aims to kickstart economic growth by unlocking the planning system to ‘rebuild Britain’.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer and minister for Housing, Communities and Local Government, Angela Rayner, have spoken about the ‘blockers and the bureaucrats’ that have been ‘holding back’ the development of new homes and infrastructure.
On top of the 1.5 million homes committed to in its election campaign, the government has now also promised to fast-track decisions on at least 150 major
infrastructure projects as part of its growth agenda. Changes will put an updated National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF), mandatory local plans and an updated planning committee structure at the heart of reform.
Belinda Gordon, Director of Policy and Public Affairs, Landscape Institute, said: “The Landscape Institute has consistently called on this government to take a strategic, landscape-led approach to planning.
“We welcome the approach outlined in the ‘Plan for Change’, which aims to link the development of housing and infrastructure with local growth and environmental improvement.
Gemma Hyde, Projects and Policy Manager at the TCPA, said: “Where children and young people live has a profound impact on their healthy development and life chances. The structure of government and its operation infl uences every opportunity that children and young people have to thrive.
“Yet, children are rarely considered, or their input accepted, in policy making and decision taking at the national and local government level, including decisions about the built environment, which means we are failing to create places and spaces that meet their needs and support them to grow into healthy, happy adults.”
Helen Griffiths, CEO, Fields in Trust said: “Over 2 million children don’t have access to places to play close to where they live. The consistent failure to prioritise children’s needs and voices in relation to the built environment has resulted in places that do not offer opportunities for children to be an active part of their communities.
“The political will to raising the healthiest generation that ever lived creates a fantastic platform to reverse this position and ensure that our children and young people have access to space they need to learn, play, grow and thrive. It is an opportunity that must not be missed.”
“However, some of the rhetoric was worrying – we can deliver on nature and housing and infrastructure, and an effective, landscape-led planning system is the means of doing this. Our members, in both public and private sectors, are
uniquely positioned to deliver across environmental and development objectives. We need a planning system that enables them to do this.”

Jane Carley gets behind the wheel of the latest electric UTV from Polaris.
Polaris’s much-anticipated Ranger XP Kinetic, its lithium-ion batterypowered UTV, is now fully available in two different versions and I was given the opportunity to put it through its paces at EJ Churchill, an Oxfordshire shooting sports destination of the type likely to be its natural habitat. Indeed, the company recently announced that Churchills had purchased one of the first models.
The Ranger XP Kinetic is a three-seat model available in a Premium version with a single 14.9kWh lithium-ion battery that offers an estimated range of 45 miles (70 kilometres), while the Ultimate model delivers 29.8kWh of battery capacity and offers an estimated range of 80 miles (130 kilometres).
Standard charging uses a singlephase EVSE that fits a 240V outlet and the Premium version reaches full charge from 0% in five hours, while the Ultimate model’s twin batteries are fully charged in 10 hours. Rates can be boosted via a three-phase (380V) outlet and peak charging accessories for up to 50% faster charge times.
Polaris has aimed to make the XP Kinetic a real workhorse and a viable competitor to its diesel or petrol siblings.
If offers 140 lb ft torque and can tow 1120kg, although as with all electric vehicles, towing and slogging up hills will impact on range. Cargo box carrying capacity is 567kg.
So what is it like to drive? Rough terrain capability is delviered by 35.5cm ground clearance plus 29in Pro Armor X-Terrain tyres and 14in wheels; it also offers
25.4 centimetres of suspension travel which helps to negotiate obstacles and smooth rutty tracks for increased safety and comfort.
In terms of capability it’s worth remembering that this is a Polaris Ranger for which the company has sought to find an electric power solution, rather than just an electric vehicle aimed at the off-road market, so it offers the company’s on-demand allwheel drive, electric power steering and VersaTrac Turf mode as standard. It’s obviously noticeably quieter than its fossilfuelled equivalents.
But it’s the tech that makes it stand out; Polaris has added regenerative braking which was lacking on its earlier electric models, plus the XP Kinetic has ECO, Standard and Sport selectable drive modes which work in conjunction with the high and low transmission
ranges to
of power for lugging, acceleration or climbing. For example, the steepest of hill climbs in our test was easily
achieved by combining sport with low range – one advantage of electric power is instant torque so no lag when pulling away.
There’s also a F/R switch on the range selector for easy shuttling – you just need to check it’s not accidentally flicked into reverse when stopping, or an unexpected back-up can result!
Drive mode and transmission status is displayed on the main screen of the 18cm Range Command terminal, along with charge status and range, elevation and direction of travel.
Buttons at the base of the terminal switch the screen to camera
integration (a front camera to help with difficult terrain or using tools such as snow ploughs plus a rear camera are options), selection and display of radio channels or music channels streamed via Bluetooth, call/text alerts or navigation.
The navigation screen even allows locations to be marked for later action, which could be useful for ground needing repair, damaged fencing etc.
Both Premium and Ultimate models are backed by a twoyear total coverage warranty, three-year electric powertrain warranty and fi ve-year battery coverage.
HTA supports Greenfingers charity
The Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) has proudly presented Greenfingers Charity with a cheque for £14,537.79.
This impressive amount was raised through the National Garden Gift Card scheme, supplemented by dedicated fundraising efforts from the HTA team throughout the year.
Jon Dixon, HTA Director of Gifting Sales, commented: “The HTA and National Garden Gift Card are pleased to support Greenfi ngers and their important mission. We hope this contribution helps them
continue to create uplifting gardens that provide comfort and joy to children’s hospices across the UK.”
As Greenfingers approaches its Silver Anniversary in 2025, the fundraising efforts of the industry are invaluable in supporting its work. Contributions like these ensure the charity can expand its reach, bringing the therapeutic benefits of beautiful, tranquil gardens to even more children, their families, and the hospice staff who care for them.

Innovative durable solution for repointing unbound flexible block paving
Birchwood Business Park is owned by Warrington Borough Council, and it is one of the largest business parks in the Northwest, with many nationally important companies on the site.
The park layout uses an interconnected network of paved pathways and pedestrian areas, linking communal seating areas with planting zones and water features.
But the increasingly frequent paving cleaning, resanding and refurbishment works were becoming an increasingly significant annual cost for the owners and their Facilities Maintenance Contractors, J.M. & M. Scanlon from Warrington. Several solutions were proposed and trialled to find the most effective, durable, and cost-efficient solution, including one from NCC Streetscape.
branches and rocks can be carried using the Loader, Rock Bucket or Log Grapple.
Once clear of obstructions the soil can prepared using the Tiller, Power Rake or Landscape Rake and then prepared for final planting with the Soil Cultivator, which effectively buries rocks and stones before utilising the Primary Seeder, which plants any type of seed directly into the soil with a consistent and accurate drop rate. Should you wish to lay power cables or irrigation pipe, then the Trencher can reach a depth up to metre, safely burying these utilities out of harm’s way. For more general tasks, there’s a Tough Cut deck for clearing scrub, brambles and thickets, a Sod Cutter for lifting turf and an Edger for maintaining pristine driveways.
And once your site has matured, there’s a choice of nine different mowers for maintaining any grass surface from fine turf to rough scrub. For the busy Landscape Contractor, it has to be the versatility of Ventrac.
The choice
NCC Streetscape’s innovation solution and recommendations, were to thoroughly clean the paved surfaces, remove any residual sand, accumulated dirt, and weed growth from the joints with high-pressure jet-washing, then to fill the joints by repointing them, not with a jointing sand of any type, but as a permanent solution with GftK vdw 850plus paving jointing mortar, applied with wet-slurry techniques.
GftK vdw 850plus is unique and the ‘state-of the-art’ in paving jointing. This is a high-performance, 2nd-generation, 2-part, epoxy resinbased, paving joint mortar, which is supplied completely prebatched, to be mixed and easily wet-slurry applied across the pre-wetted, clean paved surfaces, where it very effectively self-compacts into the joints, with no additional tooling or finishing required. After allowing 24 hours to harden, the areas can safely be reopened to the residents, no chemical weedkillers required.
As a result, the Birchwood Business Park owners and their tenants are already benefitting from less disruption. These paved surfaces will just require normal paved surface cleaning, as and when
required. Incidentally, this GftK jointing solution also makes future surface cleaning much faster and easier, as the materials are fully resistant to jet-washing, even to the use of mechanical street cleaners.

Salsco rollers deliver proven productivity
The HP11-III from Salsco with three driven rollers is the widest and quickest on the market –delivering proven productivity and performance at courses across the UK.
One club reporting a 40% reduction in the time taken to roll all 18 greens is Cowdray Golf Club in West Sussex, who purchased their Salsco HP11-III from Lister Wilder in May 2024.
“Greens ironing plays such an important part in ensuring that people’s experience of their visit is as good as it can be,” explains Course Manager Jonathan Smith. “Previously, we had a much smaller greens iron, and while
it did a fair job, it used to take us about four hours to get round where the Salsco can do it to a high standard in under two and a half.”
The three independent rolls that oscillate and articulate on the HP11-III not only allow for complete control over weight distribution, they ensure 100% ground contact. It’s ability to maintain traction without slipping was a key consideration for Graeme Roberts, Course Manager at Hayling Golf Club, and their decision to invest in Salsco.

Toro batteries can sustain your business
Anthony Nadalin, director of marketing at The Toro Company, explains how harnessing the best battery technology can allow grounds care professionals to enhance efficiency and sustainability without compromising on performance.
When it comes to batteries, there’s no substitute for experience. Toro has spent years refining the pioneering battery technology used to power its cordless range. This has enabled the manufacturer to build up unique insight and expertise into how batteries perform before bringing that know-how to the professional market.
What this means for industry professionals is that Toro’s battery-powered products deliver like-for-like performance with their petrol or diesel equivalents, including comparable torque.
The 60V Flex-Force Power System has 33% more capacity than the previous generation of 60V batteries, meaning longer duty cycles – and it can be fully recharged in just 50 minutes.
Flex-Force is compatible with the entire Revolution Series of Toro’s commercial handheld tools, so you can swap batteries between each piece of equipment. They’re also designed with practicality and durability in mind. For example, each battery has a handle, making them easier to carry, and battery backpacks are available for tools like blowers, shifting the weight for a more comfortable user experience.
In addition, we gave them more robust defences with an enhanced over-mould to protect them from impact damage when working in more challenging environments.
However, to create Revolution Series versions of most of its mowers, Toro needed a real powerhouse of performance. Contractors must have mowers that can work for as long as they need, so they can switch to electric without sacrificing productivity.
The result is Toro’s HyperCell battery system, offering allday run times. HyperCell helps
commercial machines to run quieter and cooler for longer, enabling professionals to get on with the job at hand.
In both cases, the batteries are designed to meet the evolving demands of businesses of all sizes.
Whether you are an ownermanager, an SME or a local municipality, you can reap the benefits of better battery technology. The durability, reliability and minimal maintenance requirements of Toro batteries make them an ideal choice for organisations seeking to balance operational efficiency with environmental responsibility.
To help give professionals the insights they need, Toro has developed a free-to-use TCO calculator. The online calculator makes it easy to input data for both engine and battery-powered machines.

In addition, the whitepaper also highlights the financial benefits of switching to battery power and showcases a range of efficiency advantages that can be discovered by heavy commercial users with the ever-growing range of IoTconnected equipment.
exists for many professional OPE equipment users.
In our early days as a manufacturer, domestic tool users were quicker in adopting the new technology compared to heavy trade users, with many unconvinced that the performance and run time of petrol could be surpassed.
“We have put all our efforts into the research and development of producing a battery platform that is arguably one of the most advanced in today’s market and the whitepaper will hopefully help to challenge any remaining misconceptions.”
Vince Brauns, Product Director for EGO, comments: “It is fair to say that a certain ‘range anxiety’
The Hub’s ability to bring all mowers to a safe charge level prevents this issue, ensuring the longevity and reliability of the batteries.

Wiedenmann is an instant hit
Elgin Golf Club’s, head greenkeeper, Calum Forsyth, is a proud second-generation greenkeeper.
Six months ago, Calum took delivery of his first Terra Spike purchase, a GXi8 HD alongside an ISEKI TG6507 compact tractor.
“We’re a team of five with no capacity to spare. All processes need to focus on time efficiencies, yet still be thorough and neat. Unusually, for somewhere not close to the sea, we are built on a sand belt, apart from two holes which are on clay. Fortunately, we are relatively quick draining but as every greenkeeper will tell you, aeration is that one essential task, you can’t ignore.”
Already the new Terra Spike and the ISEKI with its spacious cabin and driver comfort have brought the Midas touch.
Using 20mm tines, the GXi8 was given its maiden run across
Elgin’s walkways down to a depth of 150mm -175mm.
“We were out and back astonishingly fast, much faster than before. Subsequently we have put on 10°-15° degrees of heave to get the air pickets opened.”
Next, Calum and team took full advantage to change up their coring routine for their greens, choreographing new moves to improve both productivity and results.
“During the previous nine months we had specifically targeted the top 20 mm of the greens’ surface. In total we’d spread between 65-70 tonnes of sand, varying it at 10mm, 15mm and 20mm depths.
“The day prior we lifted the GXi8’s back roller and set up with mini hollow tines and side ejectors to go to 50mm.”

Two aeration options from Ventrac
The all-wheel-drive Ventrac 4520 multi-purpose, allterrain compact tractor has two attachments specifically designed to help with aeration on any terrain.
It is certified for slopes of up to 30 degrees and is capable of handling various turf conditions allowing aeration in areas previously inaccessible with other aeration tools.
The EB480 Aerator, with its working width of 1.22 metres, offers the perfect tools to address your turf aeration. No matter what treatment your turf requires, coring, slicing, or fracturing, the EB480 can be easily configured to suit your requirements.
The tines are replaced either individually or by quickly changing the entire mounting heads.
This gives the EB480 both versatility and longevity to best accommodate your aeration needs.
Open spoon and slitter tines on the EB480 Aerator create a hole without bringing a core to the surface, saving the extra step of cleanup.
They deliver penetration of the soil with minimal disruption to the surface, yet allows for benefits to the health of the turf.
Core tines will extract cores to allow for more drainage opportunity. This method allows fertilizers, water and nutrients to be incorporated quickly into the soil.
The EA600 Aera-vator is designed to vibrate and loosen the soil beneath the grass without destroying the turf. It creates a hole without bringing a core to the surface, leaving the turf ready for use immediately following aeration.
With a working width of 1.52 metres and a depth of 70mm, the vibrating heads create six holes every 300mm (66 holes per square metre) with the hole size regulated by the drive speed. The slower the forward speed of the Ventrac tractor unit, the larger the hole.
The tines can be replaced individually or by quickly changing the entire mounting heads, providing the versatility required for efficient operation.

It’s GKB for GBB
As the team at GBB Services look to extend their operation to include the maintenance and cleaning of synthetic surfaces, it’s a Deep Clean from GKB Machines trusted with the task at hand.
The Harrogate-based sports turf contractors purchased the unit in early 2024 having identified a number of 3G and 4G installations in their local area and have already seen dramatic improvements in pitch presentation and playability in as little as a one pass.
Family-run GBB Services offer a wide range of landscaping and groundwork services for commercial and domestic customers across North Yorkshire. For sports surfaces, Owner George Booth along with business partner Iain Bullock and their small team can offer the full complement of maintenance operations –including those for synthetic
turf with their recent purchase from GKB. “We know a number of facilities locally, particularly schools, that conduct regular brushing but maybe don’t have the time or resources to carry out the more thorough cleaning that’s required” George explains.
“We spoke to Tom Shinkins at GKB about the cleaning systems available and he brought the Deep Clean in for a demo. The day was particularly wet, but even in those challenging conditions we could see how effective it was and so purchased the machine there and then!”
The GKB Deep Clean quickly and effectively screens and clean-out contaminants from a synthetic surface in a single pass. The combination of a vibrating screen and vacuum unit removes dirt, dust and other detritus returning clean, de-compacted infill to the surface for optimal visual and play performance.
“We’ve had to wait for the weather to play ball but have now had the Deep Clean out conducting its first job on a sand-dressed pitch at a local school and it did a really great job. It stood the pile up, removed a surprising amount of contamination and left a really good finish which meant the whole job was complete in a matter of a few hours.”
“We can now move onto the next job with the confidence of knowing the optimal set-up and speed required to achieve the desired results.”
He continues, “I think we’re yet to discover the full potential of this machine, but with the support of Tom at GKB who has been excellent, Iain and I undoubtedly see it opening new doors for us which we’re excited about.”

Relieve rubber crumb compaction
Back in 2018, Tottenham Hotspur Football Club took delivery of two Ventrac Power Brooms: one for maintaining the pathways and car parking areas at the Club’s impressive 77-acre training facility and the other to help maintain the artificial turf on their synthetic pitches.
A spokesman on the grounds management team commented: “These brooms are excellent, they are available with different levels of flexibility in the bristles, so we use the less aggressive head with more pliable bristles on our synthetic surfaces.
Not only does it sweep up accumulated debris, it also helps us relieve the compaction of the rubber crumb infill and is an integral part of our synthetic turf maintenance programme.
“Like our mower attachments and trencher, these brooms are quick and easy to change and when not in use they are freestanding, which also helps with the yard management of our equipment. Once you have a Ventrac tractor unit, you just keep on finding more things that it can do; it’s certainly a versatile piece of equipment.”
An electric actuator also allows the operator to adjust the speed and direction of the broom rotation, maximizing its effectiveness.
A self-levelling feature keeps the broom horizontal at all times, and the nylon bristle broom cores can be changed in just a few minutes.
Redexim proves the solution for safe synthetic surfaces
A combination of the RTC plus and Verti-Top TB from Redexim have been entrusted with protecting and preserving the lifespan of the synthetic surfaces – along with the health and safety of the students - at Emanuel School.
With the recent addition of an all-weather pitch at their Blagdon sports ground, the school opted to purchase a maintenance set-up for both this and the main site in South-West London to retain performance and keep the surfaces clear of contamination.
Estates Director Chris Wright heads up a number of teams responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the grounds and sports surfaces across the three sites.
After speaking to local dealers Lister Wilder, Chris and the team opted for two RTC plus brush units and two Verti-Top TB cleaning systems from the award-winning Redexim synthetic range.
Powered by a 22hp petrol engine, the RTC plus features a 2.7m wide underslung, winged brush to make routine brushing a breeze. This is then complemented by the more intensive cleaning delivered by the Verti-Top® TB which lifts and separates contaminants from all types of infill material using a combination of vacuum and sieve.
The purchase also means the maintenance teams have
eliminated contamination risks when switching equipment between natural and synthetic turf.
“We don’t want to be putting a tractor with muddy tyres onto the artificial pitches which could then go on to cause other playability or safety problems,” he said.
“We’ve been really pleased with the performance and results to date, and as we’ve come to expect from Redexim it’s a wellbuilt, well-designed solution which will help us to present good, clean surfaces for many years to come.”

Brushcutting made simple with Ventrac
The Tough Cut deck attachment for the Ventrac 4520 all-terrain compact tractor has been specifically designed for mowing high grass, thick weeds and heavy brush. Able to work on slopes of up to 30 degrees, it can save huge amounts of man-hours when compared to strimming.
Capable of tackling saplings up to 2.54mm (1 inch) in diameter, the Tough Cut makes short work out of overgrown thickets. It has three cutting heights: 76mm, 92mm and 108mm. Easy servicing of belts and pulleys is provided by the hinged and removable cover, while the flip-up deck provides easy access for cleaning and changing blades.
Chris Houfe, Chairman of Greens at Stamford Golf Club
says: “Obviously we want members and visitors to enjoy their experience with us and we are currently improving the playability of the course, by removing larger areas of growth that have encroached onto the fairways over time.
“That’s why we purchased the Tough Cut deck; it does a fantastic job of knocking down brambles, young saplings, gorse and long grass, saving hours of brush-cutting for our small team. Once this has been removed, we can create more rough and semirough areas, making it easier to find wayward balls and speed up play, in general.
Peter Pattenden, the Golf Courses and Estates Manager at Carden Park, is a 30-year veteran of the
industry and is an enthusiastic advocate of the Tough Cut deck.
“The Tough Cut deck is superb as it can cut through saplings, bracken and gorse, helping to maintain the areas that consume man-hours,” he said.
“We do a lot of woodland management, removing trees and scrub, and this means travelling across fairways to reach particular areas. The light footprint of the Ventrac, which I believe is just 6 psi, allows us to go in without leaving wheel marks across the courses. I’ve been buying machinery since 1996 and can honestly say this is one of the best machines I have ever bought.”

Range expands Bobcat landscaping solutions
Last year, Bobcat introduced the first models of the company’s new mower line for the European market.
With the latest additions, it provides a choice of both entry-level commercial and professional models.
Not only do these mowers grow the new Ground Maintenance Equipment (GME) range from Bobcat, they also complement the existing fl ail mowers and brush cutters that are part of the large Bobcat range of attachments for use on the company’s mini-excavators and wheeled and track loaders.
With its compact machines, the extensive line of attachments and the mowers and its rebranded Ryan turf renovation products in the GME range, Bobcat now offers a complete suite of product solutions for gardeners and landscapers to deal with every type of situation from manicuring the finest gardens and lawns to dealing with the thickest vegetation and areas of undergrowth.
Two brush cutter attachments are available for use on Bobcat compact loaders.
The Brushcat has a rotating mower, which makes it easy to remove tough grasses, shrubs and undergrowth in difficult terrain. With the brush cutter, shrubs and other vegetation can be removed quickly and easily; for example for creating firebreaks, clearing fields and making paths.
The brush cutter can cut slightly below ground level so that it does not leave stumps behind. The steel grilles protect the driver against flying debris.
Etesia keeps Higher Wiscombe beautiful
A new Etesia Attila 98X ride-on brushcutter is helping the luxurious Higher Wiscombe farm and holiday cottages live up to its glowing reputation.
Higher Wiscombe is a 52-acre farm with a cluster of four exceptional holiday cottages in its centre.
It is located in the heart of the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is close to the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site and the South West Coast Path.
Alistair and Lorna Handyside are the owners of Higher Wiscombe and they work tirelessly to maintain their award-winning fivestar gold cottages.
“In order to make the setting as beautiful as possible, we mow approximately 4 to 6 acres each week, which is about 16 hours of mowing,” said Alistair. Alistair has recently purchased a new Etesia Attila 98X ride-on brushcutter and his decision to purchase it was based on the success of his previous mower, which also happened to be an Etesia.
“We bought a third hand Etesia sixteen years ago and it’s always been so reliable,” said Alistair.
“It was mainly due to it being so good that I wanted to keep with Etesia and the Attila 98X absolutely appealed for the amount of work that we have to do every week.”
Another option for Bobcat compact loaders is the flail mower attachment, which can follow the soil profile well thanks to the floating suspension and compact deck length.
The tailgate is adjustable so the operator can vary the size of material ejected from fi ne to coarse. The full-width tapered rear roller provides better turning ability.

Etesia’s Attila 98X ride-on brushcutter is reliable, efficient, comfortable, and safe.
The output, combined with 4-wheel-drive and performance makes it ideal for some of the toughest jobs.
The 98X has a 98cm cutting width for more efficient working while eight cutting heights are available between 50mm to 120mm, with one transport position, which is easily adjusted with a centralised lever.
It can be used on slopes up to 30% and its strengthened structure welded tubular chassis offers its operators a better driving position.
Furthermore, the electric start offers a high comfort level, rack and pinion steering, plus hydrostatic drive. Special attention has also been paid to sound and vibration levels to reduce them to a very low level – making it ideal for public areas.

Ventrac for woodland management
It might not appear to be the obvious choice of forestry equipment, but the deceptively powerful Ventrac 4520 allterrain compact tractor comes into its own for woodland management. With attachments that include stump grinders, brushcutters, buckets and grapples, there’s definitely a place for this versatile machine.
The KC180 Stump Grinder makes quick work of unwanted stumps and roots. Heavyduty carbide cutters provide extended and effective performance in spite of dirt, stones, and debris in the work area. When mounted on the new 4520 tractor it creates an agile, powerful and “turf friendly” mobile unit for woodland management on estates, golf courses, parks, and municipalities.
A special convex mirror mounted to the tractor provides operator visibility to the front cutting edge, while the steering wheelcontrolled articulation provides side-to-side cutting action.
Forward and reverse motion is controlled with the tractor’s hydrostatic drive.
The HE482 Power Bucket with grapple accessory is the ultimate material moving tool when working in woodland. It allows operators to securely transport debris, brush, branches, and logs with ease.
Hydraulically controlled from the driver’s seat facilitates smooth and effortless operation and when not in use the Power Bucket is designed to sit upright after detachment, with the lift arms in the proper position ready for direct reconnection when the bucket is used again.
The HQ682 Tough Cut deck attachment has been specifically
designed for knocking down heavy brush. Able to work on slopes of up to 30 degrees, it can save huge amounts of man-hours when compared to strimming.
A large front opening directs material into the deck where three heavy-duty blades counter rotate to cut and deposit waste evenly without windrowing.
The blades are sharp on both sides so they can be used on right or left-hand spindles, allowing for extended blade life.
Tackling saplings up to 2.54 mm (1 inch) in diameter, the Tough Cut makes short work out of overgrown thickets. It has three cutting heights: 76mm, 92mm and 108mm.
Easy servicing of belts and pulleys is provided by the hinged and removable cover, while the flip-up deck provides easy access for cleaning and changing blades.

STS Arb Group move onwards and upwards with trio of EVOs
Supporting the rapid growth and expansion of the Sussex Tree Specialists, an STS Arboricultural Group Company, is a trio of woodchippers from GreenMech.
Proud to be backing sustainable British-made products, Chief Operating Officer Darren Regan explains that the pair of EVO 165D’s and an EVO 205 SAFETrak are ticking the boxes for performance, safety and outstanding back up support. Darren, who worked for one of the world’s largest stockbrokers for over three decades, is now applying his extensive experience in leading technology and compliance service operations to the arboriculture sector.
He has teamed up with Matt Bell, the founder of Sussex Tree Specialists, to build on the fantastic business foundation Matt has already established. “Now we’re looking at how we can play our role in supporting diverse and productive woodlands, helping others within the sector, and expanding our offering,”
Darren explains. “To do that, we need the right people and the right equipment to keep us at the forefront of our industry.”
With an ever-increasing order book from commercial customers including local authorities, highways, schools and housing associations, the group invested in the EVO 205 SAFE-Trak, delivered by dealers GA Groundcare Ltd in April 2024.
“Our previous chipper was forever breaking down and the EVO 205 presented itself as more capable and in-line with what we were trying to deliver. It is constructed with quality components and materials giving us not only reliable chipping performance in the field, but also – as a British manufacturer - the peace of mind that parts and support is available locally should we ever need it.” Even more importantly, this machine excels when it comes to health and safety” he adds.
The EVO 205D SAFE-Trak is fitted with GreenMech’s awardwinning track-based system, allowing ground clearance
of up to 530mm and offering unbeatable safety when traversing slopes or challenging terrain.
“They’ve listened to the industry and know exactly what’s needed. GreenMech clearly have the same appetite for safety as we do, the machine is packed with features.”
“Delivered in August 2024, our pair of EVO 165D’s give us all of this assurance in a smaller package – ideal for smaller commercial jobs and the wealth of domestic work we still undertake” he adds.
“We have big ambitions for the Sussex Tree Specialists and the wider STS Group of companies, and with these machines on our fleet we feel we’ve made a big step in the right direction. We have also gained the support of some great people in the form of GreenMech and GA Groundcare Ltd into our network who will all undoubtedly help us as we move onwards and upwards!”

Nifty and quiet – Paxster breaks cover
Electric utility vehicles are beginning to make their mark in groundcare but many of those currently on the market lack
manoeuvrability – an area that specialist supplier Boss ORV
is tackling with the Norwegianmanufactured Paxster range.
Models feature a 48V battery with a range of up to 110km and a choice of 2460mm chassis
(eCompact) or 2955mm chassis (eStretch) offering a flat load bay with removable sides and tailgate. An open platform eCompact Air version has recently been launched, offering improved all-
round visibility and the ease of access to use an implement such as a sprayer hand lance.
Designed to be simple to operate, the vehicles use handlebars rather than a steering wheel, with forward drive activated simply via a twist grip throttle and a choice of drive modes. Turning radius is from 3.3m, using a thumb switch on the handlebars to flick from forward to reverse for easy shuttling.
“It’s a very easy vehicle to drive and should make deliveries much quicker and more efficient,” comments Neil Everett, Boss ORV national sales manager.
Fitted with mud terrain tyres and a partially locking differential, the Paxster vehicles also have a degree of off-road capability.
“Even with larger UTV brands that we distribute, we find that there are very few occasions that you actually need four-wheel drive, so the Paxster vehicles should be able to get anywhere that you need,” points out Mr Everett.
THE FUTURE IS ELECTRIC
Charging is via a cable carried onboard, using a standard 13amp supply. Boss ORV suggests a charge time from 0% to full of eight hours, but modern battery technology means that it is also possible to ‘top up’ the charge if the vehicle is idle for an hour or two.
Top speed is 60kph and the UK spec is road homologated; like a quad bike the eCompact Air doesn’t have a seatbelt and the operator should wear a helmet. The cabbed versions
