Institute of Groundsmanship recommends pay rise for grounds staff
The Institute of Groundsmanship is recommending a 2.5 per cent increase in grounds staff’s national minimum salary bands for 2020.
In addition, says the IOG, the amount paid in recognition of IOG qualifications should increase to £600 per band (a 4.3% increase) to ensure an ongoing focus on training and professional development. The total amount received should be directly linked to the highest qualification level held and equates to £600 for each level attained (eg £2,400 for a Level 4 qualification).
The IOG’s recommendations have been made against a backdrop of “considerable uncertainty in both the economic and political context”, says the IOG which adds: “The election result could have a significant impact on public investment, expenditure, economic growth and inflation, and this has made accurate
predictions for the coming year much harder than usual.”
These salary recommendations follow the publication of the IOG’s 2019 industry-wide survey, Groundsmanship –Sport’s Vital Profession, which highlighted a number of areas of concern in relation to the pay and career structure within the groundscare industry.
Says IOG chief executive Geoff Webb: “Over half of head grounds staff earn more than £25,000 per annum and a fifth earn over £40,000. Feedback during interviews indicated that some head grounds staff are earning considerably more than £40,000. Clearly, the range of salaries is very wide and individuals doing similar jobs, sometimes for similar employers, can be earning significantly different salaries.
“It is not clear if there is a recognised career structure within the sector,
and it is important that there is clear career progression that rewards learning and development, and a review is recommended to explore how this can best be achieved.
“The IOG considers it vital that in certain areas of the industry - such as at elite sports venues with worldwide focus - that there should be further analysis of roles and responsibilities, comparing not only salary levels but also the relative status of the roles within such venues.
“Indeed, in certain situations, it may be argued that there should be no upper wage cap because the demands at individual sites are unique and evidence suggests that wages at UK venues compared to overseas sites differ greatly and, in the UK, are certainly below the earning potential of the head grounds person’s role overseas.”

This has been shown to enhance job satisfaction and improves the reputation of the employer.
Introducing the next generation of turf managers Relationships renewed at Glasgow Golf Club
The British & International Golf Greenkeepers Association has revealed the 20 ambitious greenkeepers who will participate in the Future Turf Managers Initiative 2020.
Each year Jacobsen, a Textron Specialized Vehicles brand, opens the doors of its headquarters in Ipswich to 20 BIGGA members who have earned a place on the groundbreaking course by demonstrating their commitment to the profession and eagerness to learn.
The course is intense and will push the greenkeepers out of their comfort zone, but in return they will gain access to high quality speakers and
experienced mentors who will provide the candidates with a wide range of knowledge and skills that will prove invaluable as their careers progress.
Sami Strutt, head of member development at BIGGA, said: “Each of these 20 BIGGA members
has demonstrated a commitment to continuing professional development and we’re delighted to welcome them into the ranks of FTMI graduates, who are now embarking upon careers in golf course management.”

Founded as a members club in 1787, Glasgow Golf Club is proud of its heritage as the ninth oldest golf club in the world.
Between them, course managers Brian Dickson at Glasgow Gailes and Stuart Taylor at Killermont have nearly 70 years of experience leading their respective greenkeeping teams. They have recently re-established their working relationship with local John Deere dealer Nairn Brown Ltd of Busby by investing in a John Deere Financial deal for new course maintenance equipment worth more than £1 million in total, spread over five years.
The finance package, a mix of mostly contract hire plus some finance lease, includes John
Deere’s PowerGard Maintenance and Protection Plus service and repair plans, which provide comprehensive, budgeted cover for the full five-year period. A total of 19 John Deere machines plus a Tru-Turf greens roller were initially delivered this summer, with the greater number going into Glasgow Gailes.
These include E-Cut hybrid electric triplex greens mowers plus PrecisionCut walk-behind greens mowers and fairway mowers, tees & surrounds and TerrainCut rotary rough mowers, two ProGator utility vehicles equipped with amenity turf sprayers (one featuring a Rogers covered spray boom), XUV Gators and 4R Series compact tractors.

Boot wipers are a must-have for any field sports club especially here in the UK.
Mark Harrod Ltd have been producing and supplying this club essential since our start in 2004.
During this time not much has changed but our latest Premium and Elite designs have moved boot wipers to the next level.
The new wipers feature an angled ‘wraparound’ brush layout that ensures boots are cleaned on the
sides and not just the bottom. A more ergonomic angled brush makes for an easier clean whilst discouraging users from standing on the brushes.
Players standing on and crushing the brushes is one of the major contributing factors to the wear. These new mud stoppers are manufactured in-house by our dedicated team using materials from the UK.

James Williams, Head Groundsman at the London Stadium, has praised the simplicity and efficiency of the new Hunter I-80 rotary sprinklers which were supplied by KAR UK.
Originally built to host London 2012, the Olympic Stadium, as it was formerly called, is now known as the London Stadium and is home to West Ham United FC – but that’s not all.
The stadium also hosts UK athletics and concerts and has been a venue for the Rugby World Cup, The Race of Champions, Major League Baseball and the RFL Four Nations.
Engineered for sports turf, the I-80 is built with a robust, dirttolerant gear drive that offers the highest torque output of any rotor in the commercial sphere, and extends a radius range from 11.3 to 29.6 meters. The I-80 features a wide range of highly efficient, dual-trajectory, wind-fighting nozzles for highly efficient performance in a range of applications.
It also provides total top serviceability (TTS) via its integrated, surface-mounted snapring for no-dig easy maintenance – something which James is particularly impressed with.
James had eight I-80 rotors installed in the pitch and his system is further complimented by the ACC2 controller which is ideal for delivering advanced water management to meet the demands of large-scale commercial projects and the

Stadium and training grounds benefit from new TYM tractors
After taking on the maintenance of an additional stadium, Southampton Football Club is continuing its 16-year relationship with TYM Tractors and has invested in a new T503 tractor to help with the extra workload.
A new partnership between Southampton Football Club and AFC Totton has seen the Saints’ women’s team play their home games and train at AFC Totton’s Testwood Stadium this year, and as a result Southampton FC’s grounds team has taken on the site’s maintenance.
Andy Gray, Southampton FC’s grounds manager, explains: “Taking over maintenance of the new stadium, alongside our own St Mary’s Stadium and
Staplewood training ground is certainly a challenge, which is why we’ve invested in a new TYM Tractor to help take on the task.”
The new T503 joins three other T503 mid-duty tractors which have recently been replaced likefor-like, and added three new T293 compact utility tractors, says Andy: “Over the past three years we’ve been updating our fleet and most recently added a T503 for the Testwood Stadium, which brings our fleet of TYM tractors up to seven.
“We updated the fleet with a mix of like-for-like upgrades and new additions because we’ve been using TYM Tractors since 2003 and they’ve never let us down. The T503 is easy to use
and as we know from experience, reliable, and the T293 is great because of its compact size –we use it for the smaller daily jobs to reduce the stress on the turf. We’ve definitely seen a big improvement to the grounds because of that.”
With the Staplewood training ground and Testwood Stadium needing maintenance on a neardaily basis, the TYM tractors are in constant use carrying out a variety of jobs.
“We updated the fleet with a mix of like-for-like upgrades and new additions because we’ve been using TYM tractors since 2003 and they’ve never let us down,” he added.

Dennis PRO 34R exceeds standard for rotary mowers
Dylan Thompson, grounds maintenance manager at Colliers Park, believes that the Dennis PRO 34R far exceeds every other rotary mower he has used in the past.
The former Sheffield Wednesday FC assistant head groundsman has been in the top role at Colliers Park for six months now and is already making his mark. With all eyes on the FAW’s brand new development centre, Dylan and his two members of staff are helping to maintain the two natural turf pitches and the synthetic pitch to the standard expected by a national footballing body.
The FAW left no stone unturned in the launch of Colliers Park and Dylan found himself in the fortunate position of receiving an arsenal of brand-new turf maintenance products – two of which were Dennis PRO 34R’s.
“To be honest, the PRO 34R was the machine I wanted most and this was based on my previous experience of using Dennis Mowers,” he said. “I had heard about it on social media and I spoke to other people in the industry – I heard so many good things about it and to not hear anything negative whatsoever was obviously a massive positive.”
The Dennis PRO 34R is a 34” (860mm) rotary mower which has been designed to help groundsmen achieve an aesthetically pleasing appearance and desired playing surface. It is ideal for sports pitches and lawns producing the enviable ‘Dennis Stripes’ while a powerful vacuum flow collects debris quickly and efficiently.
The angle of the cutting deck and twin blades can be easily adjusted using a single ‘click adjuster’ ensuring the mower is suitable for changing conditions and meeting groundsmen’s requirements.
“It’s very impressive – I was expecting it to be good but not this good!” continued Dylan.
“The clean-up is absolutely fantastic no matter if it is wet or dry and it sucks up so much into the grass collection box.
“It is also quick so we are saving time – we are normally going on speed setting 3 which is the perfect speed for us. We have tight turnarounds so the size of these mowers is ideal because you can get so much done in little time.
“We try to use them after every usage but we actually use them during the week as well. It has surprised me as to how good the front brush is. If there is any dew in the morning, then it will take that straight off and it can also pick up any leaves. The finish they leave is really good and you can hardly tell the difference in cut between this and a cylinder mower. The PRO 34R’s are probably our most used machines and I can assure you that this isn’t just your standard rotary mower – it is far better.”

Fueling the future of groundscare with the new generation of engines
With new EU laws on engine exhaust gas emissions being rolled out across Europe, the pressure is
existing machinery in the groundscare sector is conforming to these regulations in a
Kubota UK, explains how it is meeting the challenge.
The spotlight is on all businesses and manufacturers to reduce their carbon footprint. Recent media narrative is a constant reminder of the implications of climate change, so we acknowledge there must be a shift towards the adoption of more sustainable solutions across our industry.
There is also widespread awareness of the negative effects that greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are having on the world, hence why manufacturers like us must make a conscious effort towards achieving sustainability in a mission to reduce CO2 emissions globally.
Within the groundscare sector, a significant business division at Kubota, we recognise the importance of future-gazing and thinking about what could be in store that impacts our dealers and customers.
This includes the underlying issue of engine exhaust emissions, underpinning the industry’s drive towards cleaner products. It’s important that we not only offer advice on the relatable issues affecting the sector, but products which meet the new regulations and industry demand.
This ultimately enables us to help our customers and dealers in making the right decisions for their business needs, not only now but for the future.
The challenge of complying with emission regulations is an
ongoing concern for companies required to meet increasing demands for cleaner engines.
With this comes the opportunity to adapt to these changing needs, demonstrating forward thinking and ultimately, expanding business and product capabilities.
The Groundcare sector has already made steps towards these demands, yet understandably, new machinery development can take a long time to complete to get to mass production stage.
At Kubota we are experimenting with LPG, gasoline, diesel, battery, GPS and remote-control technology and our L2602 boasts a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) Muffler and Exhaust Gas Recirculation system, making the engine not only cleaner and more fuel efficient but Stage IV emission compliant. However, as an industry, much still remains to be done.
Is the future fuel right under our noses?
Battery technology currently has a very long way to go. Within the groundcare industry, groundsmen need to use machinery for long periods of time before they would have the opportunity to recharge them, and by current standards going electric would be cumbersome, to put it mildly.
Not only this, but battery power is also expensive, and it could get even more costly for groundsmen
who don’t have the budget to support this change.
As we continue to see a rise in electric usage, we also anticipate an increased demand for lithium, nickel and aluminum – the raw materials that go into these batteries.
However, if sustainability remains at the forefront of these conversations, the issue with disposal of these materials must also be addressed.
Currently, lithium can’t be recycled and when mining lithium, there can also be huge costs involved. At Kubota, the exploration into electric / battery power is currently an ongoing R&D project.
Following the news earlier this year that China has joined Britain, France, India and Norway in announcing plans to reduce the number of gas and diesel cars in favour of electric vehicles, groundcare engines will likely be subject to similar restrictions in the future.
As such, groundcare machinery will need to adhere to European ‘Stage V” regulations and any future regulations.
How to stay ahead of the competition
As global consciousness related to environmental conservation increases, Kubota has already made steps towards this, with the 2019 win of the European
“Diesel of The Year” award for its new V5009 engine – the first time a Japanese winner has been recognised in the history of the prize.
The V5009 large displacement engine range was developed in response to new, more stringent emissions standards in the United States, EU and Asia specifically.
Every manufacturer will have to comply with these regulations
put in place, however, as we manufacture our own engines and are recognised as world leaders in the field, we are perfectly placed to adapt to the changing needs.
Looking ahead, over the next few years’ manufacturers will be assessed closely on their developments towards a greener future and, although costly, it is paramount brands remain savvy and strike the right balance between innovation and compliance, with affordable costs for the end user.
But, with this comes increased competition and, in a bid, to stay ahead in the market, the rush to innovate technologies will intensify rivalries.
As a business, our drive is to become the number one
power choice for off highway applications globally.
Looking forward to the next few years, the spotlight will undoubtedly be focused on industry emissions.
At Kubota we will be striving to continue adaptations to technology, particularly within engines in order to meet the everchanging regulations.
These developments will take time, and although it is doubtful that we will see many new products imminently, we are concentrating on focusing our attention on the aforementioned innovative technologies, whist maintaining a good balance between reliability, performance and power density within our groundcare machinery.

Charterhouse launch new solutions for aeration and brushing
A brand-new addition to the renowned Redexim VertiDrain range will be a particular highlight on the Charterhouse Turf Machinery stand at BTME 2020. Expanding the existing offering with a new 1.9m working width, it is ideal for use on a variety of turf surfaces.
Visitors to stand 432 in the Purple Zone will also be able to find out about the new 6m wide TopBrush for course presentation, removal of organic matter and dispersal of worm casts.
The Verti-Drain 2519 is considered the next generation of high-speed, high-productivity aerator. It combines it’s 1.9m working width with a variable working depth of up to 250mm (10”) and can accept a range of tine options including 12mm and 19mm solid tines, as well as hollow tines for coring. This versatility makes it a popular choice with greenkeepers,
groundsmen and contractors alike looking for a machine suitable for year-round operation.
As standard, the 2519 features user-friendly controls, an easy to adjust heave lever and a new draw rod system. Together with new features, it also comes with new styling and livery.
As well as updates to the aeration portfolio, Charterhouse will also be launching a new tool into their brush range. As an ever-increasing number of chemicals continue to be withdrawn from the market, Course Managers are turning to mechanical forms of maintenance to keep surfaces balanced and reduce contributing factors to disease. Brushing stands the grass plant upright, helping to achieve a cleaner quality of cut and can rid the surface of excess moisture and dew to maintain good airflow through the turf canopy.
ClearWater to continue expansion
ClearWater, the leading British designed and manufactured, washpad water recycling system has become a firmly established brand name in the UK since its introduction in 2003 by Highspeed Group Ltd.
Following steady development and the start of export sales, Acumen Waste Services Ltd acquired the company in the spring of 2017.
Demonstrating a commitment to the development of ClearWater, a separate ClearWater Division was set up led by General Manager Matthew Mears. Sales have since moved forward and, to enable the division to handle the extra business and expand further, ClearWater has recently taken on extra staff.
The new dedicated team now comprises: Matthew Mears - General Manager, Julie Tunningley – Administration, Steve Short – Engineer, Jez Coward and Chris Burton –Field Sales. Reaping the benefits of the large parent company, Acumen Waste Services Ltd., and enhancing customer service, the team are backed up by a contingent of “Cross-Trained” Acumen staff, well versed in ClearWater.
These expansion plans have seen the introduction of new marketing initiatives too with the emphasis on re-branding; an updated logo (sympathetic to Acumen branding), a new and up to date video and fresh advertising / publicity.
Said Matthew Mears: “The logo may have changed but it’s the same class-leading ClearWater system. We wanted to bring the brand up to date and the new contemporary logo exemplifies this. Watch out for it on social media, exhibitions, advertising and our other marketing.”
ClearWater now has the opportunity with these extra resources to expand beyond the traditional, but still important, golf sector and target other markets (not always turf maintenance based).
BTME is the next exhibition for ClearWater and represents quite a landmark as this year is the 25th year at BTME since Highspeed first exhibited. BTME is seen as an important event and Acumen had no hesitation continuing attendance after acquiring Highspeed and ClearWater.
Call and meet the team on the Acumen-ClearWater Stand No. 206 Red South (21st to 23rd January 2020) to see ClearWater showcased and the new video. Talk to them too about Acumen’s waste management services, hazardous waste disposal, spill products and remediation.
Export is high on the agenda too and sales to the USA golf sector, an important but notoriously difficult market to penetrate, are beginning to come to fruition.
Two new machines set to impress from BLEC
BLEC will be returning to BTME in Harrogate with details of two new machines being launched into the landscaping and turfcare range, in early 2020.
With a Redexim touch, the Multivator returns to the renovation stable by popular demand, while a new pedestrian version of the Rotorake will also be introduced.
Visitors can find out all the details from the BLEC team on stand 414 in the Purple Zone.
The Multivator returns good quality material from depths of up to 30cm back into the upper layers of the soil profile. Once the soil has been successfully exchanged, the rear-mounted brush then ensures material is distributed evenly to leave a clean finish in its wake.
A popular machine from the BLEC portfolio in days gone by, the Multivator returns with a working width of 180cm and a 75hp tractor requirement. With a number of new features under the guidance of Redexim design and engineering, the Multivator will become a popular tool for
contractors, local authorities and large-scale landscapers once again.
Also built in direct response to customer demand is the new Rotorake 1000. This new compact, pedestrian variant of the larger, tractor-mounted model is designed specifically for use in smaller areas and those with restricted access. Powered by a BCS two-wheel tractor or similar, the Rotorake 1000 features a 100cm working width and uses a multi-tine rotor to rake down to a maximum depth of 30mm.
PTO driven, its principle is the same as that of the heavy-duty Rotorake – to move and windrow unwanted stones and debris using a contra rotating rotor to leave a clean, level finish.
Along with finding out about the latest additions to the line-up, stopping by the BLEC stand will also give visitors the chance to see some of the most popular products from their pedestrian range - the Cultipack Seeder and Power Box Rake.

Dennis and SISIS
be making their annual trip to Harrogate in January and BTME visitors can expect to see four fantastic products on display in the Red Zone on Stand 244.
Dennis Mowers recently launched a new and exciting range of mowers called the E-Series and no doubt the ES860 cylinder mower will prove to be somewhat of a show-stopper at BTME 2020. This 34” battery powered turf management system delivers maximum versatility and the range of 13 interchangeable cassette options provide a solution to many dayto-day maintenance tasks such as cutting, scarifying, brushing, slitting and aeration. A weather proof colour LCD programmable display keypad screen is an integral feature of the handlebar console providing
the operator with a multitude of information options including ground speed, clip rate, service checks, lifetime running reports and battery information.
The ES-860 will be joined by the FT510 professional mower in representing the famous Dennis brand at BTME. When it comes to all areas of fine turf, the Dennis FT510, has for many years, been celebrated for its top performance and durability.
With a 51cm working width, the FT510 provides its user with comfort, flexibility and excellent presentation. TMSystem and INFINICUT to optimise plant health
With changes in pesticide legislation having an everdeepening effect on sports turf quality, Turf Mangers are having to carefully consider the role of mechanical maintenance in delivering a proactive plant health strategy.
The UltraGroomer cassette from the renowned TMSystem collection is specifically designed to provide a healthier turf environment by preventing the accumulation of thatch. Visitors can find out more about this, alongside the award-winning INFINICUT range, on stand Red 253 at BTME 2020.
A thatchy surface that is moisture retentive not only reduces the movement of oxygen and nutrients, it also provides an ideal environment to harbour pathogens.
The UltraGroomer cassette features over 80 tungsten carbide tipped blades, spaced at 5mm apart, to reduce Poa ingress, minimise puffiness and prevent the build-up of organic matter. By improving the plants immediate environment, it becomes more difficult for disease pathogens to take hold.
The UltraGroomer can also be effectively used in conjunction with other cassettes from the TMSystem range, particularly the
SMARTVibe to increase greens speed. During the winter months, when the plant is at its most vulnerable, the SMARTVibe can be employed as an alternative to mowing to reduce plant stress.
Vibratory rolling can smooth the greens surface and quicken play without cutting, eliminating passes of heavy pieces of
equipment which in turn, lowers the risk of compaction.
The TMSystem is available to fit OEM triplex and light fairway machines, as well as being an integral part of the Cub Cadet INFINICUT mower.

John Deere expands fairway mower line-up
John Deere has announced two new additions to the economical 6000A Series fairway mower line-up, which will be previewed at BTME 2020 in Harrogate from January 21-23.
Sharing technologies with the award-winning A Model mower range, the 6080A and 6500A E-Cut hybrid electric fairway mowers feature highperformance electric reel drive, which greatly reduces the number of potential hydraulic leak points to ensure maximum productivity and performance.
In addition to their economical price, these new mowers can be operated at lower engine speeds, which further reduces operating costs by decreasing fuel consumption.
“We’re excited to bring the E-Cut hybrid mowing system to the 6000A Series fairway mowers,” says John Deere’s European turf sales & marketing manager Carlos Aragones. “Powerful and full of premium features at an economical price, the 6080A and 6500A combine our proven E-Cut hybrid electric technology with the popular 6000A Series model design.”
John Deere was first to market with its electric reel drive system in 2005 on the 2500E triplex greens mower, and this was added to the fairway mower range in 2009 with the 7500 and 8000 E-Cut hybrid models.
By removing all hydraulics from the reel circuit, the risk of hydraulic leaks has been reduced by over 90 per cent.
In addition, the hybrid system is powered exclusively by an alternator, which offers consistent performance without additional batteries to maintain.
Equipped with a powerful 24.7hp (18.4kW) diesel engine, the 6080A and 6500A E-Cut hybrid mowers feature a three-wheel smooth tyre configuration on a durable chassis, with premium performance and comfort features for all-day mowing. Width of cut is 80in (2m) on the 6080A and 100in (2.5m) on the 6500A, with 18 and 22in (46 and 56cm) QA5 cutting units respectively.
These new models include the proven eHydro transmission and LoadMatch as standard, which maintains a high quality cut even when working on slopes.
A mowing speed of 8mph (13kph) on both models allows operators to be more productive by covering larger areas in less time.
Another advanced technology feature adopted from the existing A Model range is the innovative, password-protected TechControl display. This gives turf managers and technicians complete control over cut quality and performance by enabling them to input commands such as mowing speed, transport speed and service times, while also capturing onboard service diagnostics.
Cut quality on the new John Deere 6080A and 6500A E-Cut hybrid electric fairway mowers is further enhanced with rearattaching yokes on the cutting units and standard hydraulic

OxyShot successfully shatters compaction
The OxyShot, from Charterhouse Turf Machinery, recently came to the rescue of waterlogged surfaces at Ipswich Town Football Club’s Training Ground.
Despite having a thorough aeration programme in place, Grounds Manager Ben Connell called on the air-injection unit, to treat deep-level compaction and improve drainage.
“In the lead up to the winter period, we had been aerating regularly with solid tines to best prepare ourselves for the wetter conditions” explains Ben, who oversees 13 surfaces at the club’s training facility, together with the stadium pitch.
“When we started to find waterlogging on one of our
academy pitches, I called Peter Knight of Bury Turfcare, who deduced that there was a pan layer roughly 400mm down causing these areas to hold water.
“As the OxyShot can work down to a depth of 500mm, he brought the unit in to shatter the pan layer and since then, this area has been free-draining.”
Using a single 25mm probe, the OxyShot injects air into the soil in four directions, at a pressure of up to 110psi.
Perfect for ‘on the spot’ treatments, the highly manoeuvrable unit can be easily transported for use in a variety of situations – from golf course walkways to goal mouths, tennis baselines and sports pitch touchlines.
Impressed with the results achieved, Ben had the Oxyshot back a few weeks later to carry out further spot treatments on another problem area.
“We worked on an area roughly 10m 2 and the results were fantastic.
“We had some really significant rainfall in the few weeks that followed and while some surrounding areas were very wet, the test patch was free-draining and clear of any puddling.
“Months later and we’re still seeing the benefits of the work, with no compaction to report.”

Successful 12 months for 1st products range
The 1st Products’ UA60 AERAVator has enjoyed a promising 12 months at venues such as Royal Norwich Golf Club.
During the construction of the new course at Royal Norwich there was a lot of compacted soil from tracks made by construction traffic to break down. It was a tough task made easy with the AERA-vator.
The AERA-Vator, a subsurface aerator whose unique osilating vibrating tine system loosens, rather than punches, the soil around and underneath each tine.
Allowing better air and water infiltration and easing soil compaction, the AERA-Vator does the job without leaving cores or plugs behind and means less post-aerification clean up.
The AERA-Vator is able to aerate dry soil to reduce the expense of pre-irrigating too; in fact, the harder the soil, the better the AERA-Vator performs. The AERA-Vator can also be equipped with a unique seeding box, allowing the customer to aerate and seed in one pass, which is an option Royal Norwich chose to save time by reseeding at the same time as breaking down the soil.
There are further benefits too – as the AERA-Vator has been designed with a universal frame system – extra shafts can be added to expand its capabilities. Customers can choose from the Multi-Tine, Multi-Slicer, Multi-Spike and the non-PTO Coring shaft.

Terrain Aeration score croquet points in Shropshire
The market town of Church Stretton lies in the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Nicknamed ‘Little Switzerland’ in the late Victorian period for its landscape, the local geology has some of the oldest rocks in England.
Among the many amenities the town has to offer, Church Stretton Town Council provides facilities such as crazy golf, hard tennis courts, a bowling green and croquet pitches.
The two croquet lawns at Sandford Avenue had been placed on a hard surface and over time, becoming so compacted, they developed severe waterlogging problems. Good management proving very difficult, the Council looked around for a solution and after a number of consultations brought in Terrain Aeration.
“We chose to go with Terrain because we needed to open up the ground for better drainage,” says Michael Turner, the Council’s Amenities and Services Officer, “and with the ground being so hard it needed breaking up very much deeper than normal aeration.”
The lawns are available to the croquet club and members of the public and the other reason for improving the facilities was the fact the town team won the West Midlands League and needed the lawns to match their prowess.
Terrain Aeration carried out the work over one and a half days, with their Terralift machine’s JCB hammer slicing through the compaction to allow the hollow probe to reach up to a metre under the lawns. Working on a staggered grid pattern, once the probe reaches the optimum depth, compressed air is released up to a maximum of 20Bar (280psi).
The blast effect fractures the compacted soil to allow drainage and deep aeration, with the grid ensuring each shot interconnects the fissures and fractures. As the probe withdraws, dried seaweed is injected which expands and contracts with the moisture content in the soil to keep the fissures open.
The probe holes are then backfilled with Lytag, an inert product which allows air and water to percolate through but is mower friendly.

Andrew Brough, head groundsman at Wolverhampton Rugby Union Football Club, claims that the SISIS Quadraplay single pass maintenance system, has helped him in his personal quest to improve the standard of pitches.
One of Andrew’s first tasks as head groundsmen was to sign-up to the RFU’s Groundsmen Connected initiative which is an easy access, two-way communication network between the RFU and rugby union groundsmen.
Members have a direct communication channel on pitch maintenance issues with Twickenham’s head groundsman Keith Kent, and it was Keith’s advice which prompted Andrew to purchase the SISIS Quadraplay.
The SISIS Quadraplay multiple-purpose, single-pass maintenance incorporates a mounted frame for up to four implements such as grooming rakes, spikers, slitters, rollers and brushes.
As part of the package, Andrew also purchased the SISIS Multitiner – a tractor mounted aerator. “I’ll be using the Multitiner to spike the pitches and obviously by doing that we will be able to go into the holes with sand.
“We will then go along the pitches and sweep all that nice sand into the ground and give it a bit more drainage and help to get rid of some of those holes and ditches.”

Under-pressure turf professionals look to Wiedenmann for fast accurate aeration
Wiedenmann UK’s deep Terra Spike aerators with their combination of speed and accuracy give turf professionals an ace card when weather is unpredictable.
Taking advantage of prevailing conditions or pushing the button to “go” is made a lot easier if you can do the job in half the time.
A rugby or football pitch is easily manageable in less than three hours while it is widely possible to aerate all 18 golf course greens in just one day.
Chris Lynch, Grounds Manager at John Lyon School, Harrow-on the-Hill, at Sudbury Fields in North West London, has four full size football pitches, three junior size pitches, four training zones and three cricket squares.
On any given afternoon up to 200 pupils and PE staff from the independent boys’ day school, make full use of the playing facilities.
“With our previous aerator, we could expect to cover all 28 acres, minus the cricket squares, in five to six working days.
“Now with the Terra Spike GXi8 HD, the sports fields with the cricket squares included can be done in less than three days.
At the other end of the country at Banchory GC, Aberdeenshire, Course Manager, Richard Mullen said: “For us aeration needs to be done quickly without compromising standards.
“The GXi8 means we can reduce operator time, reduce fuel and importantly use just one machine.”
The faster machines from Wiedenmann give more windows of opportunity, an extremely important factor for facilities who need pitches to remain playable year round to attract bar revenue or golf courses who have allocated days for competitions and society golf.
Being able to make a quick decision depending on the weather and amount of play makes managing the maintenance that much easier, allowing the flexibility needed to complete this very important task.

The process is completed in one motion with just a single probe. We penetrate the soil beyond the root zone to a depth of one metre and then inject 100psi of high pressured, compressed air into the ground. Whilst the probe is inserted into the ground, a natural underground void is created and then back filled with Terramol to the surface, creating a permanent drainage soakaway.
Promote growth with Plugr
The colder months can have a significant impact on gardens, even the best cared for of lawns can need a helping hand to encourage new growth and revitalise them.
A key way of doing this is through aeration. The days of traditional aerating with a garden fork are gone, particularly for owners of larger lawns.
Plugr aerators from Billy Goat offer a compact solution that can improve drainage and promote new growth with absolute ease. By making holes throughout the turf that allow air circulation through the roots, Plugr products help restore lawns to their perfect green condition.
Ideal for large domestic gardens is the PL1800 reciprocating aerator, which has an 18” working width, along with four tines that puncture the turf and place cores 2.75” deep, aerating at 22,000 square feet per hour. With an easy folding handle it allows for compact use, transportation and storage.
Billy Goat products are exclusively available in the UK through Henton & Chattell dealers nationwide.
