Now celebrating it’s 30th year, the Golf Environment Awards (GEAs), including the Syngenta Operation Pollinator Award, have been promoting the incredible work of golf clubs across the UK, and internationally.
Celebrating sustainability, conservation, ecology and caring for the environment; each year golf clubs share their journey into plans and practices they have, continually encouraging wildlife and biodiversity.
STRI calculates golf courses represent 33% of the UK’s open space and, when managed properly, can significantly enhance biodiversity, conserve rare habitats, and be one of the leading sectors in promoting positive environmental practices.
“Habitats of any kind need maintenance,” advocates Stella Rixon, senior agronomic consultant at STRI Group.
“Heathland and link dunes require grazing and mowing to stop dominant species taking over.
“Greenkeepers are key to creating a mosaic of habitats and helping to encourage strong biodiversity across the courses and getting the right balance.
“At a time when golf clubs are facing rising costs of materials and fuel, there is no better time to assess what areas need minimal maintenance and let mother nature take care of the site.”
Continuous improvement and monitoring of an ecosystem is so important and can create vital
stepping stones among urbanised landscapes, she says.
“Through studies, it has been proven that golf courses are even superior to farmlands for supporting the diversity of tree species and therefore bird diversity as well.”
Nature conservation bodies are now increasing their efforts and funding into establishing ‘wildlife corridors’, which improve the capacity of species to move between remnant areas of good habitat. They have recognised golf courses as having important roles in the success of this mission. Numerous courses across the UK are involved with safeguarding rare species and re-introducing those which are declining. These incredible efforts are helping
Kubota fleet is the key to maintenance operations
A fleet of equipment from Kubota is being entrusted with ambitious improvement plans across the surfaces at Hertfordshire’s Aldenham School.
With the assistance of a pair of RTV Utility vehicles, two ride-on mowers and three tractors from Kubota’s L-Series, Grounds & Gardens Supervisor Danny Wells is well-placed to continue the development of the highly historic sports facilities across the 110-acre site.
Much of the Kubota equipment was already working hard at the school during Danny’s previous stint, and it’s this reliability and versatility –together with the fantastic back up support from local dealer George Browns Ltd – that sees the fleet expanding more in recent months.
“Our tractors are the workhorses for the vast majority of operations
we do here – whether that’s spraying feeds on the cricket outfields or hitched up with our scarifier, aerator or top dresser for mechanical maintenance on the fifteen winter sports pitches,” said Danny.”
Recently joining two Kubota L2452 compact tractors in the shed is a cabless L1-382 fitted with flotation tyres. “While we’ve only had it a matter of weeks, this has already proven to be a great bit of kit!” Danny continues,
“Our pitches are mainly claybased so can lay very wet over winter. This capable yet lightweight tractor will enable us to still get implements on the ground without causing damage.
“Everything we have from Kubota is well-built, intuitive to operate and versatile for all the various applications and environments we manage. Our

Data access is just a click away with Turfkeeper
For the last 18 years Course Manager Geoff Smith has been spending hours meticulously setting up and inputting into an array of spreadsheets to help him manage the greenkeeping staff and grounds at the beautiful Abridge Golf Club in Romford, Essex.
‘All my spreadsheets were stored on a USB stick which I guarded with my life. It recorded everything I needed to manage all areas of the golf course including budgets and provided the necessary evidence and reports to justify everything we did. It didn’t bear thinking about if it was to ever get lost!”
Geoff joined the Abridge 18hole, par 72 Championship golf
course in 1996 and knows the greens better than anyone. He was a customer of Rigby Taylor, Headland Amenity and Symbio for around 12 years before they merged in 2021 to form Origin Amenity Solutions (OAS). “I love working with Origin, it’s been around 15 years now, and can’t praise them highly enough. They have great reps and some fantastic products. I put nearly all of my business through them.”
The course was first designed, in 1962 by renowned maestro of English Golf, Henry Cotton, whose outstanding feature was that both loops of nine holes started and finished at the clubhouse. It is considered one of the finest in the county and is an Open Regional Qualifying
Course. It has held various Essex tournaments and was host to the PDC EuroPro Tour event in 2022. Geoff uses a combination of non-biological and biological products as part of an Integrated Turf Management programme.
“The OAS reps work with me to choose products that complement each other well and ensure the very best outcome. We have around 750 members and our course and greens are expected to be in the best possible condition free of disease”, adds Geoff.
In 2023 Geoff was persuaded to trial the OAS TurfKeeper webbased digital platform which is designed to replace all manual spreadsheets and ledgers. He had a demonstration from Kevin Scarce, Turf Keepers Product Manager and whilst impressed was reluctant to move away from his trusted spreadsheets.
With greenkeepers and turf professionals facing mounting pressure to justify every decision they make, from equipment purchases to project proposals, and with costs soaring and resources dwindling, the need for data-driven insights is critical. TurfKeeper is being used in many golf and sports clubs across the UK and is equipping turf managers and greenkeepers with the tools they need to maximise resources, streamline decision-making, and manage turf maintenance.
Geoff implemented Turfkeeper in July 2023 and after a couple of hours of training set about entering his information into the system. Geoff considers himself “Old school” and wanted to try it alongside his existing spreadsheets. “I shouldn’t have worried, it’s such a user-friendly system and works brilliantly.
I love it and dropped my spreadsheets at the end of 2023. I now use Turfkeeper exclusively for all my data.”
At the heart of TurfKeeper lies a robust suite, from staff management to inventory control, task planning to budgeting. TurfKeeper provides greenkeepers with a central hub to oversee every aspect of their operations. “I use it for everything”, adds Geoff, “It’s only as good as the information you put into it though, so I spent a few days inputting – staff wages, hours, stock information, budgets, maintenance programme, etc and now it’s so easy to pull off the information I want. That’s the beauty of Turfkeeper. It gives you graphics and pie charts to show to management or the Greens Committee – everyone loves a picture - it’s so easy to understand and takes no time to produce.”
Abridge Golf Club is set in 240 acres of beautiful parkland with some of the finest views over the Essex countryside. It’s a close-knit club and its members and a Greens Committee are encouraged to interact, question,
and offer their suggestions. Geoff has a wealth of knowledge and is held in high esteem, but he does enjoy knowing he has data at his fingertips that he can show to back up his decisions or support his capital requests. His members requested the tees be cut by hand for a better finish. In seconds
Geoff had a report that showed the extra labour required to achieve this and the associated cost that management needed to sign off on additional staff recruitment.
Geoff is supported by a team of nine, there are currently 2 other people in his team with access permissions to the system, his deputy Ben Scrivener and first assistant Jamie Blagdon. They both assist Geoff with stock control, applications and help assist with planning tasks in Geoff’s absence.
Geoff now spends 30-45 minutes to plan for the week and month ahead,
rather than the couple of hours previously. “I use TurfKeeper for everything but primarily organising tasks for the greenkeeping team, stock control, and budget control.”
One of the most significant benefits of TurfKeeper is its ability to save time and resources. By automating repetitive tasks and eliminating manual paperwork, Geoff can focus his efforts on strategic decision-making and turf maintenance. “I am delighted with TurfKeeper, it has saved me hours of labour and I only have one platform to enter information into and extract data from. The team likes it because they can view the full picture, they know what is planned for everyone for the weeks and months ahead. I can’t recommend it highly enough.”

Foamstream by Weedingtech has been described as a ‘gamechanger’ in the world of weed control by contractors DB Premier Solutions.
In fact, owner Darren Baldwin was so impressed with the versatility of the system, that his new venture revolves solely around his L12 unitopening doors to customers in both the commercial and domestic markets.
With more than two decades of experience under his belt maintaining the world-leading sports surfaces at Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, Darren admits he seldom gets excited about new machinery – but that changed upon his discovery of Foamstream.
“In the Premier League, sustainability is at the forefront of what we do. However, our pursuit of solutions that are more environmentally-friendly cannot be to the detriment of effectiveness or surface quality.” Darren continues, “Foamstream first dropped onto my radar
when I saw it in action at another Premier League Club. We then hired a unit at Tottenham and I was sold. I liked the versatility of it and could see it had real mileage – it’s probably one of only a handful of innovations that have come along and really changed the market.”
“In wanting to pursue something different, and take life a little gentler, I purchased an L12 from Campey Turfcare Systems in November 2023 and established DB Premier Solutions in the new year. It’s proving itself day after day, gaining interest from new and retuning customers and now means I’m just as busy as ever!”
As the worlds leading herbicidefree weed control solution, Foamstream kills weeds, moss and algae using the precise application of hot water insulated by a specially-formulated, biodegradable and organic foam.
Available in the UK via Campey Turfcare Systems, Foamstream targets unwanted vegetation as well as the surrounding spores, delivering control comparable to traditional chemical alternatives
in a range of applications and environments.
“Its versatility means that one day I can be in a football club, treating weeds in areas that are environmentally sensitive that would have relied on labourintensive hand-weeding as a previous method of control. The next, I might be in an equestrian facility working around stable blocks. Being safe to use around animals and pets makes Foamstream perfect for the domestic market, which has resulted in a wealth of new work with residential customers and council-owned facilities.”
He adds, “Being able to use the L12 as a commercial cleaning unit is just another string to its bow, along with being effective on moss – within two hours you’ll see a change in colour, making it easy then to brush out and remove. I’m genuinely excited for the coming months to just keep finding more and more things this system can do!”

Conference to protect waterways
A conference dedicated to the control of invasive weeds will examine the impact of aquatic weeds on Britain’s waterways and how best to deal with the problems they pose.
The Property Care Association’s (PCA) 2024 International Invasive Weed Conference (IIWC2024) will feature, for the first time, a session dedicated to aquatic invasives, with expert speakers from a range of leading organisations.
BASF’s latest addition to the greenkeepers armoury, Maxtima, has proven to be a huge success since its launch back in January at BTME.
With hundreds of greenkeepers turning to the cutting-edge demethylation inhibitor (DMI) fungicide thanks to its efficacy and long-lasting protection.
Maxtima’s evolution came through rigourous scientific testing, with BASF’s research and devlopment team testing and strategising around the clock until the optimum solution was created. Today, it has become one of the most popular fungicide for professional’s in recent years.
The active ingredient in Maxtima is a substance called mefentrifliconazole. Once applied, this active is rapidly absorbed into the leaf, where it is protected against degradation from the rain and high UV exposure. It then forms a reservoir that slowly releases the active ingredient for longterm defence against the toughest of fungal diseases for up to 28 days. The innovative
isopropanol-azole chemistry within Maxtima creates maximum binding capacity and adaptability due to the flexibility of the molecules, unlike other standard azoles, it binds tightly to the target fungal enzyme. This process enables the ingredients to control the plant pathogen strains that are tolerant against DMI’s, offering a substantial advantage that older DMI products on the market.
The most significant advantage of Maxtima is its high efficacy rate and quick control of the toughest turf diseases, dollar spot and microdochium. Microdochium is known for its resilience against control methods, and once it catches hold, can spread rapidly.
Dollar spot also presents turf managers with significant stress, as it is resilient against many DMI fungicides, but both diseases have no known resistance to Maxtima. In fact, a recent trial coordinated by Agrovista showed that turf that was treated with Maxtima, showed a 92% mean reduction of the disease compared to turf that
was left untreated. Maxtima’s impressive absorption rate is not exclusive to the warmer months like many other turf products. Even at temperatures as low as 4 degrees centigrade, it continued to bind to the leaf, giving it an improved ability to fight fungal pathogens during the autumn and winter months. What’s more, its ability to provide protection extends for up to 28 days thanks to its slow release functionality.
Due to its unique formulation, Maxtima can be paired with a non-DMI fungicide on turf in product rotation. Not only does this ensures maximum protection against fungal pathogens, but it helps to reduce the risk of the fungal population becoming resistant to the DMI active ingredient.
Matthew Martin, Strategic Key Account Manager at BASF said: “Maxtima continues to push the boundaries of what is possible and achievable in turf management. BASF had been working behind the scenes on the new DMI, Maxtima ® for
many years, and the development of such a rigour and effective product was down to the demand of turf professionals up and down the country who were struggling to control and prevent disease on their greens.
“The benefits of Maxtima were always known to us, but since its launch earlier this year, hearing how the turf professionals have received it, and the relief it has offered them when dealing with fungal disease is astounding. It is proving to be an essential part of the turf manager’s toolkit, and we can’t wait for more in the industry to try it!”
Maxtima was launched in collaboration with Agrovista Amenity, the industry’s leading supplier of professional products and specialist advice. Turf professionals will be able to speak to their local Agrovista representative to order the product and for more detail on its usage and compatibility.

Academy enhances facilities with state-of-the-art synthetic surface
Forming part of the King Edward VI Multi Academy Trust, are two Camp Hill institutions for Boys and Girls. As part of the campus there are a number of outdoor pitches to cater for a plethora of sporting activities.
Despite a number of outdoor pitches both grass and tarmac, it was decided by the school that the existing tarmac surface located next to the indoor facilities needed to be replaced. The campus’s existing fencing was broken and needed to be removed which would allow the courts to be extended by 8m.
The Trust wanted to take the opportunity to install a new surface that could offer more protection to the students and could be used by both the girls and boys campuses. Traditionally tarmacadam surfaces are considered to be more hard wearing, however in recent years the safety aspects of this type of surface has come under scrutiny.
With this in mind Blakedown Sport & Play worked with the school to select a surface that met the needs of the school. Having
undergone rigorous surface interaction tests Playrite’s Matchplay 2 was found to have higher levels of shock absorption, slip resistance, impact attenuation and rotation resistance, making artificial grass an ideal choice for physical environments.
Playrite’s Matchplay 2 synthetic grass surface is a multi-use surface specifically designed to be used for multiple sports. Matchplay 2 also benefits from a low sand content allowing for playtime to be conducted all year round and all weather conditions, as well as being available in a wide range of bright and vibrant colours, elevating a standard play area into a stimulating play environment.
The Playrite MatchPlay 2 surface was laid with permanent lines for 3 Tennis Courts and 3 Netball Courts along with painted lines for handball & football.
Steven Gori, from Blakedown Sports & Play commented “ The Matchplay 2 surface offered our client the level of protection they required for their pupils and allowed them to offer more
sports all year round without the limitations of the weather”.
Chris Pickles, Sales Director from Playrite commented “We’re thrilled to have been part of this project. Our aim with the Matchplay 2 MUGA surface was to provide a reliable, highperformance solution for sports enthusiasts. We hope it inspires students to stay active and pursue their passions.”
With its new Playrite Matchplay 2 surface, King Edwards IV Academy is able to offer excellent sporting experiences that foster an enjoyment of learning that allows every child the opportunity to achieve their full potential. Redexim proves the solution for safe synthetic surfaces
A combination of the RTC plus and Verti-Top TB from Redexim have been entrusted with protecting and preserving the lifespan of the synthetic surfaces – along with the health and safety of the students - at Emanuel School.
With the recent addition of an all-weather pitch at their Blagdon sports ground, the school opted to purchase a maintenance set-up for both this and the main site in South-West London to retain performance and keep the surfaces clear of contamination.
Sport plays an integral part of life for students at Emanuel School, reflected in the ongoing investment into the quality facilities available to pupils and a number of clubs and organisations in the wider community. Estates Director Chris Wright heads up a number
of teams responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the grounds and sports surfaces across the three sites. “With one artificial surface at the main school, our second at the Blagdon site came online in September 2023 which really made us look at how we were going to maintain these, along with the synthetic lawns we’ve introduced into our ornamental areas” Chris explains.
“The maintenance was previously contracted out, but from a cost and practical perspective, it became logical to invest in equipment that would give us the flexibility to conduct regular brushing and a more intensive deep clean more frequently.”
After speaking to local dealers Lister Wilder, Chris and the team opted for two RTC plus brush units and two Verti-Top®
TB cleaning systems from the award-winning Redexim synthetic range.
Powered by a 22hp petrol engine, the RTC plus features a 2.7m wide underslung, winged brush to make routine brushing a breeze. This is then complemented by the more intensive cleaning delivered by the Verti-Top® TB which lifts and separates contaminants from all types of infill material using a combination of vacuum and sieve.
“This partnership gives us flexibility and effective cleaning for the shorter-pile, sand-dressed surfaces as well as the ornamental carpet which has a longer pile.
The RTC plus is out once a week and then we can affix the Verti-Top TB to the RTC for a thorough clean once a month.”
Chris continues, “The Verti-Top has really impressed us with the amount of detritus it collects –
everything from paper clips to jewellery which are removed in a single pass.”
The purchase also means the maintenance teams have eliminated contamination risks when switching equipment between natural and synthetic turf. “We don’t want to be putting a tractor with muddy tyres onto the artificial pitches which could then go on to cause other playability or safety problems.
“We’ve been really pleased with the performance and results to date, and as we’ve come to expect from Redexim it’s a wellbuilt, well-designed solution which will help us to present good, clean surfaces for many years to come.”

Latest Redexim delivery at Craigielaw Golf Club Powerful blowers and brushes from Ventrac
A Turf Tidy 3000 has become the latest addition to a rapidly expanding Redexim fleet at Craigielaw Golf Club.
Delivered with both a flail and scarifier shaft in April 2024, the Turf Tidy is set to deliver effective fairway scarification and rough management at the East Lothian venue.
Described as ‘a golfers paradise’, the 18-hole Championship Links course is one of 22 which make up Scotland’s Golf Coast. In charge of the maintenance alongside a team of six is Head Greenkeeper Paul Hay. “We had a machine for scarification and cutting the rough but that wasn’t giving us the results we wanted so we got
in touch with Henderson Grass Machinery who, along with Allen Whellans at Redexim, gave us a demonstration of the Turf Tidy” he explains. “From the off, it was impressive - the fully floating head handled cut and collection on our undulating rough areas really well. In addition, we could see how effective the unit would be for scarification of the fairways, leaving a tidy finish and bringing the surfaces back into play swiftly.”
“Since its delivery, we’ve scarified a couple of areas on selected fairways to remove thatch and lateral growth with fantastic, clean results. Come the winter, we’re already planning to use the Turf Tidy to cut back
design that delivers powerful, yet quiet performance. The blower housing can be rotated 180 degrees in the horizontal axis allowing the operator to move debris in the desired direction without hindering operation. Two guide wheels maintain a consistent distance from the surface to maximise operational efficiency. This blower can be used to remove leaves, light snow, water and other debris.
The Ventrac ET202 Turbine blower makes quick work of any clean up job and is designed to move large volumes of air and is much quieter than conventional debris blowers. The powerful front discharge nozzle can be hydraulically rotated through 360
degrees from the operator’s seat enabling clean-up work to be done simply, quietly, and efficiently.
Industry stalwart and former Group course manager at The Club Company Chris Brook says, “Considering the Ventrac tractor unit is less than 25hp, it is remarkably powerful and can go anywhere. The Power Blower attachment is excellent; unlike a
lot of blowers that change the direction of the vortex through a vertical axis, in an up-andover action, this works in a 180° horizontal axis, which enables more control over the direction of the material being dispersed.
It’s great when blowing leaves from greens and, being out-front, visibility is second to none.”
Demonstrating the versatility of
the roughs, taking out some of the density and removing the unwanted vegetation which will bring multiple benefits to both the course and the players alike” Paul adds.
The Turf Tidy joins a Redexim Multiseeder 1200 and VertiDrain 7316 on Craigielaw’s fleet, both also installed by Henderson’s over recent years.
“The Multiseeder was a fantastic purchase! We’re into our third year with this machine which is used on the greens, tees, approaches and even some parts of the fairways. It’s an incredibly versatile dimple seeder, which we can quickly and easily adjust to suit ground conditions or seed type. We’re currently working to
incorporate more fescue into our playing surfaces so are utilising the Multiseeder with a single roller which works perfectly for us.”
“The delivery of the VertiDrain ® 7316 was incredibly timely, arriving ahead of the
winter meaning we could get a pass in on the tees, greens and approaches before the worst of the weather arrived.”
Paul concludes, “We’ve got to know what to expect with the Redexim equipment. Everything we have is reliable, versatile and is backed up with brilliant support from both the dealer and Redexim directly. We will certainly be looking to add more machines in the future.”

Makita adds powerful backpack blower to range
In the latest expansion of its range of outdoor power equipment,
Makita has launched the UB004C 36V Battery Backpack Blower.
Easy and comfortable to use, the new blower delivers outstanding
levels of air volume and blowing force and is powered by the Makita PDC1200 or PDC1500 portable power packs to achieve excellent runtimes.
The powerful and versatile UB004C has a variable speed trigger with cruise control and three speed modes to regulate the maximum blowing force, allowing it to be used for a wide range of applications. In the highest setting it delivers a blowing force of 25 newtons (N) and an air volume of up to 20.9m3 per minute (in boost mode). The UB004C also features a boost mode that provides 28N of blowing force for a limited time. The new blower has a telescopic nozzle and depending on the user
requirements, it can be fitted with three different nozzle ends.
The UB004C is powered by either the Makita PDC1200 or PDC1500 ‘Connect X’ portable power packs. These backpackmounted power sources feature 33.5Ah and 43.5Ah batteries respectively and can be used with a wide range of Makita’s twin 18V (36V) LXT or 40VMax XGT tools as well as machines like the UB004C, that have a direct connection. Using the PDC1500, the UB004C has a continuous runtime of up to 200 minutes, which provides ample trigger time for a typical day’s work. For ease of use, there is a clear and simple to read batterylevel gauge on the grip.
The backpack configuration of the UB004C means that the weight of the battery and machine is comfortably distributed across the user’s shoulders, back and waist meaning it can be used for longer without fatigue.
The backpack harness has been redesigned from previous similar models to provide a further reduction of stress on the user’s shoulders. It also features an adjustable control grip to suit the user’s size and preferred working posture with 180mm of forward and backward movement and 180º of left to right adjustment.

University’s field specialist applauds SISIS sweeper
Seattle University’s commitment to maintaining first-class athletic and sporting facilities has received a significant boost with the introduction of the SISIS SSS1000 towed sweeper.
Peter Larson, the Athletic Field Specialist overseeing the university’s sports grounds, has praised the efficiency and versatility of this innovative machine, particularly in its ability to effectively pick up grass clippings on both synthetic and natural grass pitches.
The SSS1000 sweeper serves as an indispensable tool for maintaining pristine playing surfaces. Featuring a spiral rotary brush, it efficiently sweeps debris into a mesh hopper, allowing for the preservation of pitch infill.
This crucial functionality not only enhances the aesthetics of the field but also ensures the safety and performance standards demanded by athletes.
Regular cleaning of synthetic surfaces is vital to avoid contamination and remove potentially harmful debris before play. The SSS1000 has proven instrumental in achieving this goal for Seattle University, providing Peter and his team with a fast work rate that helps keep the surfaces in optimal condition.
One of the standout features of the SSS1000 is its adaptability to different surfaces. Whether it’s synthetic turf or natural grass, the sweeper’s adjustable brush height ensures thorough cleaning without causing damage.
Furthermore, its unique spiral brush design minimises vibration, guaranteeing constant brush contact with the surface for consistent results.
Peter’s journey with the SISIS Sweeper began with its introduction at the Sports Field Management Association (SFMA) Trade Show in 2023.
Drawn by the promise of a quieter and more efficient alternative to their previous equipment, Peter was impressed by the sweeper’s self-propelled technology.
“I was looking for a tow behind sweeper for our synthetic field to replace our previous machine,” says Peter. “The old machine was effective at sweeping however it was too loud. I was interested in the self-propelled technology and friends at the Seahawks Training Facility gave the SSS1000 a ringing endorsement.
They provided us with a demo on their grass field to show how effective it is at picking up grass clippings.”
Reflecting on his experience with the sweeper, Peter notes its intuitive operation and quiet operation as standout qualities.
“We have used the SISIS Sweeper on our synthetic field and recently we brought it over to our soccer pitch to sweep up grass clippings - it gets the job done,” he remarks. “In both cases, I appreciate the quiet nature of the machine. It is intuitive and easy to operate.”
“I highly recommend this product. It works well on synthetic and natural grass fields, which is difficult to find in a sweeper,” adds Peter.
As Seattle University continues to prioritise the maintenance and enhancement of its athletic facilities, the SISIS SSS1000 towed sweeper offers superior performance and versatility.
