DuPont™ Corian® from CD UK shines as luxury lighting

CD UK has supplied Glacier Ice White Corian® to Zone Creations and designer Caxton Rhode for a solid light installation in a luxury apartment. A metre in diameter, the dramatic piece was completed from concept to creation in four weeks. The translucent qualities and malleability of Corian® made it the perfect choice for this design, delivering hotel standard lighting in the domestic setting. To ensure a flawless distribution of light, the patterned fascia was milled directly into a single solid sheet. An outer shell was constructed from sections of the same material, bonded and polished to create a seam-free piece, while a spiral of remote-controlled LEDs provide a dimmable, truewhite light from within.

Hunter Douglas

Bespoke ceiling design for barn conversion

An early 20th century barn that underwent extensive conversion features an intricate solid wood feature grill panel ceiling, custom-designed and made by the expert Hunter Douglas team. Hunter Douglas was commissioned to manufacture and supply 245m2 of the grill panels to create an individually designed ceiling that softened industrial-style roof of the 600m2 singlestorey building. Using ayous solid wood stained to look like oak, the aesthetically attractive fire-retardant grill system comprises 35mm x 35mm slats with 17mm gaps. The panels were fitted at different angles and orientations, to create the required aesthetic effect and a patented clip is used to secure the panels to the sendzimir galvanised steel suspension rails. Juliette Halliday, of Hunter Douglas, said: “This was another example of Hunter Douglas team using its extensive expertise to create a completely bespoke grill panel system for a client.”

Advanced facade solution for structural timber construction

Taking its name from the historic use of the adjacent canal - the Timber Basin in Panmure Street will provide 108 new homes for Queens Cross Housing Association. The mixed use residential scheme incorporates social housing and shared equity homes for first-time buyers. Panmure Street includes numerous building types from two and three bedroom town houses to five and even eight storey apartment blocks.

The Panmure Street development in Glasgow demonstrates the benefits and versatility of using the Alumasc Ventilated System (AVS). On this scheme a closed panel, fully offsite manufactured solution was delivered, with only a small element of external onsite fabric work required.

CCG - who have recently invested over £12m in a state-of-the-art factory, were the main contractor and offsite manufacturer on the scheme, installing AVS with a lightweight acrylic brick slip finish.

AVS offers an alternative approach to traditional build, particularly for new build timber framed housing. It provides an engineered, stylish facade solution, with the option of utilising modern offsite construction techniques. Due to the system’s free flowing cavity, it remains both continuously ventilated and drained whilst maintaining detailing true to traditional

build expectations. This ensures the timber substrate sustains its ventilation requirements, removing condensation and preventing moisture tracking back to the building fabric, providing a protected structure. AVS is approved for use with acrylic brick slips, silicone render and dashing render.

Paul Muldoon, Contracts Manager for CCG said: “The Panmure project is one of the largest projects using closed panel technology to be manufactured offsite in our new factory. Due to the design of the Alumasc Ventilated System we were able to apply 75% of the brick slips offsite therefore the usual challenges such as transport logistics, site access problems and weather did not impact on the project.”

The key driver for the specification of AVS was its ability to replicate traditional construction design whilst being adaptable for the closed panel production line. AVS is quick and easy to install and can be produced in factory controlled conditions, enhancing quality and minimising onsite waste whilst offering a rapid and reliable build programme, not effected by adverse weather conditions.

Alastair Wylie, Group Chairman and Chief Executive of CCG commented: “The Alumasc Ventilated System for

timber frame provides a significant advancement in the concept of Modern Methods of Construction and furthermore relieves the pressure upon skill and material shortages.”

The Alumasc Ventilated System provides a decorative, ventilated solution to meet the specific needs of the structural timber sector, bringing to market a robust BBA approved and NHBC accepted facade solution, engineered to meet UK Building

Regulation requirements. AVS provides a solution for the requirements and guidelines set out by both the NHBC and TRADA for timber framed construction.

EGGER unveils a lighter, stronger alternative to 38mm chipboard

EGGER UK has launched OSB HDX a brand new 30mm heavy duty, load-bearing OSB4 panel suitable for use in humid environments.

It replaces EGGER’s 38mm HDX chipboard and is the ideal solution for heavy duty loadbearing environments such as mezzanine flooring, racking, shelving, working platforms and decking, where P5 or P6 38mm chipboard would typically be used.

S & L United Storage Systems Ltd in Essex, specialists in the supply and installation of shelving and racking systems and mezzanine flooring for warehouses, distribution centres, retail environments and self-storage facilities, have been quick to see the benefits.

“Our fitters were extremely happy with the performance of EGGER’s new OSB HDX product. They found the panels easy to handle over what they normally use, were surprised by how light in weight the product is given its superior structural properties and how well the boards fitted together. They were able to complete the installation quicker and are happy to use OSB HDX on future projects,” said Robert Wray, contracts manager at S&L United Storage Systems Ltd.

The low swelling properties of EGGER OSB HDX means it is less likely than P6 to pick up moisture which can lead to uneven floors. Another benefit for installers is it’s easy to fit. With a tongue and groove profile on the two long edges, the panels are laid the same way as 38mm chipboard.

Due to it only being 30 mm thick, it’s 20% lighter, despite it being wider than a typical chipboard panel (675 mm as opposed to the standard 600 mm), the wider board means that it is easier to manoeuvre and quicker to lay. EGGER OSB HDX board dimensions are 2400 x 675 x 30 mm TG2.

Dan Soulsby, EGGER’s category manager for building products, said: “We’re always pushing the boundaries with our products to offer customers innovation and excellent quality solutions for their projects.

“EGGER OSB HDX is a lighter, wider board that’s easy to handle and quicker to fit. Its greater strength and stiffness over 38mm chipboard allows our customers to install floors which are designed to take higher loads, or even use fewer joists. In turn this can provide customers with the opportunity to make

significant savings on time and cost with their projects by using fewer materials and laying the floors quicker.”

EGGER UK specialises in the design and manufacture of structural flooring boards for use in both residential and commercial build projects throughout the UK and Northern Ireland.

Sioo Wood Protection –a new wood modification for the UK

All too often the appearance of new timber clad buildings is ruined by uneven weathering. It is quite common to see buildings where the shaded areas are still unweathered whereas the exposed areas have already changed to the silvery-grey colour associated with exposed wood. For this reason, pictures of timber clad buildings are always taken immediately after construction and not after a year or two! Aesthetics is hugely important in the built environment and this patchy weathering puts people off from specifying timber as a cladding material.

A new product in the UK is the Swedish wood surface modification system, Sioo Wood Protection. This product reacts with the wood to produce a pleasing even grey surface within a few months of application. Very importantly, this accelerated weathering takes place through a chemical reaction of the Sioo system with the top few millimetres of the wood surface and so it is a permanent change. Because the

greying takes place due to the chemical reaction, a completely even appearance is obtained, since it is not reliant upon exposure to sunlight for the reaction to take place.

The Sioo Wood Protection System uses silicate technology in a two part waterbased system. The first stage of the treatment uses a mineral silica solution that is able to penetrate the surface of the wood very efficiently. After the first treatment stage, a silane-based emulsion is applied, which cures by cross-linking to form a flexible silica network and provides a water-proof barrier preventing leaching of the mineral silicate. Over time, the mineral silicate cures by reacting with atmospheric carbon dioxide to precipitate an insoluble silica network within the wood structure.

The product has been used extensively for cladding and decking protection and has also been used to protect the decks of sailing boats. The Sioo system is used

as a surface protection system, which is suitable for Use Classes 1, 2, 3.1 and 3.2 according to EN 335 Part 2 (see table). If additional protection is thought necessary for Use Class 3.2 applications, then the Sioo Wood Protection System can be applied to preservative treated wood and to thermally treated wood. When used in interior applications Sioo Wood has the huge advantage of being VOC-free, since it is water-based and uses silicate technology. Disposal at end of life is not a problem, since the product is non-toxic.

Use Classes according to EN 335 Part 2.

Use Class General Exposure Condition

1 Interior, covered 2 Interior, or covered

3.1 Exterior above ground, protected

3.2 Exterior above ground, unprotected

4.1 Exterior in ground contact and/or fresh water

4.2 Exterior in ground (severe) and/or fresh water

For further details and information on the Sioo Wood Protection System please refer to the UK website (www.sioo.co.uk).

Shackerley clads new Academy and Leisure Centre

Shackerley has supplied over 900m2 of SureClad ceramic granite ventilated cladding for Consett Academy and Consett Leisure Centre, providing premium quality external finishes for this £44 million regeneration project.

Whilst the new facilities have been constructed as a single building, the specification of ceramic granite in different colourways has helped to give each part of the development its own clear identity.

For the academy, Seymour Harris, architects for Carillion, specified multi-format polished and unpolished black façade panels from one of Shackerley’s most popular ranges. Installed ‘broken bonded’, this cladding forms a key design element of the main frontage.

To differentiate the leisure centre, the architects specified SureClad® ceramic granite façades in a lighter stone colourway, with black detailing at the main entrance.

Seymour Harris Director, Tim Johnson commented: “Shackerley’s ceramic granite gave us everything we were looking for... excellent clean lines, stunning quality appearance, robustness with long term low maintenance. The range available also meant that we were able to reflect the natural local materials and strata and outcrops of the surrounding landscape in our designs, whilst maintaining the civic quality and continuity of detailing demanded”.

Radmat

Free more space: new ultra-thin thermal insulation

When constructing balconies or terraces in new build projects or replacing them during refurbishments and renovations, a common requirement for contractors is to deliver both low U-values and the thinnest build-up possible. This can be a real challenge, especially in these areas, as high thermal performance is required but the lack of construction depth or space can be an issue. Balconies and terraces are notoriously problematic for roofing contractors as there is often very little space for installing new insulation. In order to meet the required U-values, the insulation will sometimes be installed both on top of and on the underside of the balcony or terrace. Not only can this be time-consuming, technically challenging and pose a condensation risk, it can also add unnecessary costs and increase the overall thickness of the construction.

Trailflex improves grip for steep golf club path

Trailflex, the highly flexible porous paving system from Langford Direct Ltd., has recently been specified at Heysham Golf Course to improve safety for its members.

The Lancashire golf club worked with Langford Direct Ltd. to apply the material to an extremely steep embankment leading to the club’s driving range, which is regularly used by its members on a daily basis.

Created using recycled car tyres, Trailflex proved to be the ideal solution for the golf club’s requirements to stabilise a steep pathway, adding extra grip for pedestrians and golf trolleys.

Trailflex has proved to be an ideal paving solution for a wide range of public applications due to its highly porous and flexible qualities.

The rubber and stone mix material is intelligently designed to flex to 90° without damaging the performance or appearance of the surface and is particularly suitable for applications to public footpaths, cycle routes and car parks where tree root intrusion is present. Trailflex will simply adapt to the contours of the terrain and will flex to allow the movement of the roots in search of moisture, whilst maintaining a solid and attractive surface.

The porous material is also fully SUDS compliant and guarantees the fast and efficient drainage of rainwater.

Making light work of brick soffits

Creating flawless brick-faced soffits and lintels has now become much simpler and quicker, thanks to a new lightweight stainless steel based system developed by two industry-leading companies - brick support specialist Ancon Building Products and Ibstock Kevington –national manufacturer of brickwork and masonry special shapes and prefabricated components.

The new Nexus system combines a specially developed Ibstock Kevington lightweight brick-faced steel unit with Ancon’s tried and tested MDC stainless steel bracket angle support system.

The system offers contractors easier handling coupled with maximum adjustability, both vertically and horizontally, for quick and simple alignment on site.

The new system offers considerable benefits over traditional cast concrete alternatives –cutting weight by more than half, which in most cases will allow the brick-faced units to be installed without specialist lifting equipment.

Individual Nexus units are designed and prefabricated off-site to suit different soffit dimensions, even modern deep soffits, so there is no cutting required on-site. They are simply offered up to the pre-fixed and pre-drilled Ancon MDC support system and then bolted into position using T-head bolts.

Nexus has been independently tested for long term durability by Lucideon, the independent global experts in materials testing, analysis and consultancy.

New brochure for Helifix Dixie micro-piles

Helifix has produced a new 12 page technical brochure giving full details of its versatile, high performance, Dixie micro-piles, which are used to rapidly and cost-effectively stabilise buildings suffering from subsidence.

The brochure looks at the benefits of using the innovative, simple, but extremely effective Dixie micro-pile system, such as minimal disturbance to occupants and no spoil removal, and full technical specifications are provided. The main causes of subsidence are also examined and how, following detailed investigations, appropriate repairs are designed based on the damage, the weight of the individual property and the local ground conditions.

A step by step installation process is included in the new literature, complementing Helifix’s recently launched animation on the micro-pile system, which can be viewed at www.helifix.co.uk/videos. Illustrated case studies are also available.

Backed by International Code Council (ICC) certification and conformance to AC358, the International Standard for helical foundation underpinning systems, these well proven and technically advanced micro-piles are the ideal solution for the problem of foundation settlement.

Copies of the Dixie micro-piles brochure, an important new addition to the Helifix technical library, can be downloaded from the website or requested direct from Helifix.

For project-specific technical advice contact the Helifix team on 020 8735 5200 or go to www.helifix.co.uk/downloads for all Helifix technical product datasheets and over 100 standard Repair Details, covering all common structural masonry faults.

New product guide

Minster, part of the saint-gobain group, has launched their biggest ever product guide following a number of key changes in the market and strong customer demand.

As one of the UK’s most recognised distributors for specialist insulation, dry lining, roofing and ceilings materials, the guide highlights Minster’s ongoing commitment of delivering quality solutions to the construction industry.

Comprised of 316 pages, the fifth edition of the Guide offers over 9,000 product lines in one convenient place plus demonstrates the breadth and depth of our available range. It includes a much wider roofing offer along with fire protection, acoustics, external facades, thermal insulation, dry lining, ceilings, flooring and for the first time ever, My Comfort building solutions from Saint-Gobain.

A ‘living’ façade in harmony with nature

Over 6,268m² of ROCKPANEL Natural boards have been used to create an extraordinary façade for a new office building with workspace, and a 4,500m2 heating technology building for a forward thinking German company.

With 9m high rooms, vaulted ceilings and a combination of tactile materials, the cladding was carefully chosen to reflect this, with Corten steel and larch shingles both being shunned in favour of the style and flexibility offered by the 10mm ROCKPANEL Natural boards.

Just as wood weathers and changes hue, the look of these robust basalt panels is matured by sunlight and natural weathering.

Working in collaboration with core suppliers, the guide has been developed to ensure customers have access to an extensive range of quality interior and exterior building solutions. Designed to give the best customer experience, the guide uses performance icons and supplier logos to provide an easy browsing process, while the inclusion of quick check lists in each section aims to help customer purchasing efficiency.

With the largest range available to date, roofing is a key area that has been significantly developed in the new guide, bringing more choice to the market. There is an expanded range of commercial and domestic flat roofing solutions including torch on felt, single ply, breather membranes, lead, insulation and accessories.

This has been incorporated to show Minster’s acknowledgement for key factors set to influence the market over the next few years. These include the impact of expected growth in the industrial, office, retail and leisure sectors as well as adhering to higher energy performance requirements across new and existing buildings driven by EU carbon reduction legislations.

Also included is the brand new launch of ‘My Comfort’; a higher building specification developed by Saint-Gobain which aims to provide improved comfort factors for better health and well-being. In addition, it will significantly reduce energy consumption and ongoing operational and maintenance costs through excellent thermal and acoustic properties, and reduced moisture.

Minster stocks Saint-Gobain’s unique range of products, making them the UK’s leading distributor able to deliver simple to install solutions that can help to significantly improve building performance. The My Comfort concept delivers against five comfort factors including thermal, audio, visual, indoor and economic.

Transformational paving

With the recent completion of public realm regeneration at the east London Brownfield Estate, Interpave has substantially updated its case study on this exemplary project. Brownfield includes modernist architect Ernö Goldfinger’s listed, ‘brutalist’ concrete high-rise blocks - including Balfron Tower - from the late 60’s and early ‘70s.

Before regeneration, a key issue with the Estate was the variable quality and character of the urban realm, which was ill defined with uncertainty about identifying public or private spaces and fronts or backs of buildings. With standard width carriageways, very wide pavements and no defensible space to frontages, the streetscape was bleak.

This regeneration project, designed by PRP for Poplar HARCA, works within the general layout of the refurbished and new infill buildings and adopted streets. The aim is to unify disparate elements of the site using a simple palette of hard landscape materials, developing a language that unites the neighbourhood. Wherever possible, multi-use streets and spaces are developed – bold and contemporary in character – using robust and high quality landscape elements.

The project is characterised by a uniform application of concrete block paving on unadopted areas, with feature paving announcing estate entrances and around key buildings. Here, concrete flags in strong colours are arranged in bands to create a bold linear feel. Then, throughout the scheme silver-grey concrete setts – with enhanced granite surface adding sparkle – highlight footways, while charcoal setts identify private amenity space. Edges and transformations are defined by enhanced-finish concrete kerbs, some laid flush, others raised.

This is an exemplary scheme, demonstrating the importance of considered, detailed design and execution in the public realm. Interpave has just published an updated case study exploring the project which, together with other case studies and guidance on various issues, ranging from Sustainability to SuDS, can be downloaded via the Interpave information resource at: www.paving.org.uk

NEW liquid reservoir unit to prevent spillages

Due to customer demand, Leafield Environmental has recently introduced a NEW liquid reservoir standalone unit to collect excess liquids from cups and plastic bottles to prevent leakages in mixed recycling bins. The NEW ‘AquaPod’ unit holds 7.5 litres of liquids and its compact design, allows it to sit alongside other recycling units. The lightweight, yet inherently strong one piece construction has been designed for ease of cleaning. In addition, all edges have been designed with large radius to minimise dirty traps. The black base is made from 100% recycled material (subject to availability) and the blue graphics are offered as standard to clearly define waste stream collection. Made from UV stabilised medium density moulded polyethylene (MDPE). The unit cost is £75.

Charcon introduces new concrete paving to range

Charcon, the commercial hard landscaping division of Aggregate Industries, has introduced three new concrete pavers to its portfolio: UrbanPave premium flag paving, Vianova Maxx large element textured paving and Monksbridge rumbled effect block paving.

UrbanPave has been designed to provide a premium landscaped surface for ultracontemporary public realm schemes. Vianova Maxx is a large element textured paver that combines a modern feel with high quality performance. Monksbridge block paving is a viable alternative to traditional rumbled products and is suitable for pedestrian areas where vehicle overrun is likely. It is ideal for creating a traditionally-styled, naturally cobbled look.

Help reduce landfill waste

Nexus City 240 and Nexus City 140 Recycling Bins can help reduce the amount of waste being sent to landfill. Covering both the ground floor kitchen area and basement floor, a total of 22 stainless steel channel drains in lengths up to 5.75 metres were fitted, along with 35 large gully pots. Each gully included removable stainless steel odour traps and waste baskets placed inside, topped off with anti-slip grating.

Working closely for over a year with the kitchen design team and on-site contractors, Component Developments were able to help overcome any on-site problems. This included communication between the different trades and being able to design the channel system to tie together the plumbing and floor tile layout within the structure of the building.

Component Developments were able to offer both a practical and visually pleasing solution, whilst sticking tightly to the requirements of the kitchen design.

Alumasc Rainwater’s New Pre-Fabricated Galvanised Steel Outlet

A new prefabricated outlet has been added to Alumasc Rainwater’s high performance Steel range. The innovative outlet is a one piece component, which reduces the risk of leaks due to incorrectly cut materials on-site. It also makes on-site installation quicker and easier and it looks great too.

Ideal for traditional and modern buildings, quality steel systems provide limited risk of shrinking, leaking or colour fading.

“Our lightweight Steel range is scratch and corrosion-resistant,” says Pete Wainer, National Sales Manager for Alumasc Rainwater. “Steel is a contemporary, eco-friendly and cost effective alternative to plastic guttering for domestic and social housing.

“We’ve now extended our Steel range with a prefabricated outlet,” continues Pete, “so installers don’t have to go through the tedious process of cutting a hole in the gutter and fixing the wrap around outlet.”

Alumasc Rainwater’s steel guttering systems provide high flow capacity due to the larger inlet funnels on the outlets. It’s available in a choice of four widths, all in the popular Half Round profile along with connecting round downpipe systems. There are additional downpipe sizes and associated fittings and accessories to complete it, including Rainwater Diverters and the unique Steel hopper head. The range comes in a plain galvanised finish or in a highly durable polyester pre-coated black finish. It’s also supplied, by request, in a range of six alternative contemporary colours, which are galvanised to a highly attractive and quality finish.

Hydro

Northallerton

Technology

A new £3.1 million flood alleviation scheme in the North Yorkshire town of Northallerton is using innovative vortex flow control technology to reduce the risk of flooding to homes and businesses in the town. Large Hydro-Brake Flood Alleviation vortex flow controls have been installed upstream of the town’s refurbished culverts to protect flood-prone watercourses. To reduce the risk of flooding to about 170 properties, the flood alleviation vortex flow controls enable excess water to be held back in specially built flood storage basins in agricultural land on the approach to the culverts. The giant cone-shaped HydroBrake Flood Alleviation vortex flow control devices installed in the culverts are based on an industry-standard method of flow attenuation, most frequently used in much smaller dimensions as part of urban surface water drainage designs.

Remmers

Remmers deliver food grade flooring

Hygienic food grade flooring was required to the automated filling and packaging lines at the relocated premises of Nature Delivered (www.graze.com). A number of steel structure mezzanines were constructed to maximize space and house new sorting and packing machinery. Each mezzanine level required a complicated matrix of cross falls within the sub-screed and a hard wearing, hygienic, slip-resistant resin floor finish, with integral perimeter coving. Due to the fast track nature of the build process, an epoxy damp-proof membrane was required prior to installation of the resin finishes. Remmers Haftfest Polymer was added to the sand/cement screed to improve its performance characteristics, increasing compressive strength and reducing the potential for drying shrinkage cracking. The screed was laid to falls and subsequently primed with 2 coats of Epoxy MT100 damp-proof membrane and topped with a nominal 8mm thick layer of Remmers Crete HF hard wearing polyurethane screed.

Balconette launches unique Frameless Juliet Balconies

Now there is nothing to obscure the view with a new Frameless Glass Juliet balcony from Balconette. Using literally just one sheet of glass, the balustrading specialist’s new range of Frameless Glass Juliet Balconies is a highly-aesthetic, straightforward-to-install and minimalist balcony guarding solution.

Designed to enhance the external appearance of any building, Balconette’s Frameless Juliet balcony uses 21.5mm laminated and toughened glass panels. The system allows for a Frameless Juliet of up to 3.15 metres in width using a single pane of glass that makes the perfect partner for French, or any doors installed on the first floor or above.

Balconette stocks seven standard sizes of its Frameless Glass Juliet balconies, ranging from 1280mm to 2840mm, which are available within five working days. Custom sizes can also be supplied on request.

Installation is straightforward using attractive support profiles secured to the walls either side of the aperture. These profiles allow tolerances for installation

where previously very accurate drilling was required for glass with pre-drilled holes. “We listened to what our customers wanted and have designed what we believe is one of the most stylish and simple-to-install Frameless systems on the market,” said Managing Director Effi Wolff.

“This style of Juliet balcony is growing increasingly popular and we we’re getting frequent requests from architects, designers, builders and private individuals for a Frameless system that could meet their design objectives.

“We are delighted to offer this new product, which not only delivers a stunning and eye-catching result, but is also surprisingly affordable.”

Two exclusive detached properties, built by privately-owned developer Rectory Homes, are among the first to showcase the new Frameless Juliet balconies, supplied and installed by Balconette.

The Frameless system’s minimalist appearance perfectly complements the contemporary style of the £2 million-plus

homes in Harberton Mead, close to Oxford city centre.

According to Procurement Manager at Rectory Homes Tony Wrench, glass balustrading was specifically requested for the project ‘and Balconette fitted the bill’.

He added: “The ‘Frameless Juliet balconies have been well-received and look fantastic; we are very pleased with the end result. If a Frameless system or glass balustrading is required on a future project, we would use the company again.”

In addition to its Frameless Juliet systems, Balconette offers a comprehensive range of straight and curved glass and aluminium balustrades, plus Juliet balconies, with a choice of handrail styles and finishes to suit all budgets. Curved sliding patio doors and curved glass enclosures can also be supplied, along with a high-quality range of wood-free decking products.

Lifts, Stairs & Balustrades

Lifts? The latest addition to a luxury home

We all love a little luxury in our homes: all the latest comforts; every electronic gadget to help us in our busy lives; so it’s no surprise that the trend for building high-specification luxury homes sees developers and owners sometimes include the convenience of a lift. It’s the ultimate statement, a lifestyle choice and a useful addition to high-end housing. A home with a lift (or two) really does stand out from the crowd, propelling a property into a highlydesirable ‘must-have’ category.

Two floors and a small footprint When the lift requires only two stops a simpler through-the-floor lift can provide a perfect solution. Installed very simply, with no shaft required, these types of lifts have a small footprint for just two standing passengers and fit discreetly into the corner of a room. This makes the location of the lift quite flexible.

Installing a through-the-floor lift requires minimal builder’s work and within just a few days our through-the-floor Stannah Salise is installed and ready to use. Discreet and occupying minimum space these products provide quick access over two floors and are ideal for retrofit sites.

The Salise meets the requirements of BS5900:2012 is a popular choice and a luxurious addition to comfortable living.

For two or more floors, with a generous footprint

For houses with two or more floors and generously-proportioned internal space a domestic platform lift may be the chosen product. With a footprint that meets regulations to ensure it can accommodate up to four people or a wheelchair user, this type of passenger lift will certainly serve the occupants of a large house well into the future. It offers a warm welcome to everyone who occupies or visits the property.

The addition of this type of lift into a private dwelling has a number of considerations and costs. In an existing dwelling there are four clear stages to a project: surveying the site to produce plans, builder’s work, lift installation and finally internal decoration. In a new dwelling these can all be part of the architect’s plans and building work so costed as part of the whole project.

At Stannah we recommend our Midilift range of platform lifts, meeting the requirements of BS 8300:2001 and giving specifiers a wealth of options to meet every technical and aesthetic requirement.

The invisible butler

The trend for the convenience of a lift in luxury homes doesn’t end there. The fashionable town house with multiple floors

and unconventional layouts may mean bringing the groceries home (or having them delivered) could involve many flights of stairs. That’s why high-end developers and city conversions are building in a small service lift to take the strain. It’s certainly not a new thing as grand Victorian homes often had a pulley lift or ‘dumbwaiter’ in a wooden shaft that assisted the below-stairs staff with service in the formal dining room.

In grand home refurbishments the addition of a small Stannah Microlift dumbwaiter or service lift adds both convenience and value to a property - and a little grandeur too. Supplied in its own small shaft and able to travel 30 metres, with up to three entrances available on each level, the Microlift really does provide an extra pair of safe hands in a busy home.

REHAU TOTAL70

shows its versatility in parallel window application

Demonstrating once again that the REHAU TOTAL70 truly is a ‘complete PVC-U system’, Devon based fabricator Interframe has for the first time manufactured innovative, parallel hinged sliding windows using only REHAU TOTAL70C chamfered profile.

The windows, which were installed at the newly opened Steiner Academy in Exeter, were specified because they could provide almost twice the free air flow of standard top hung or casement windows and could deliver a greater number of air changes per hour.

With levels of ventilation known to have a direct effect on concentration and learning in schools, natural ventilation is a key priority for many designers looking to go beyond the minimum requirements of the Building Regulations Part F (Ventilation).

At Steiner Academy, the windows were specified by architects AHR Global in Bristol. The solution which could deliver the free air flow required in openings up to 2100mm high.

A key benefit of parallel windows is that they don’t impact on the look of a building’s façade and maintain a consistent reflective view, with low G-value glass used to reduce solar gain. At Steiner Academy, all of the 150 plus windows, doors and screens installed were also coloured in a contemporary looking smooth RAL 7016 grey foil.

Lock down for winter

House security is big business these days…but not everyone gives the same attention to the garage.

Yet when you consider the valuable equipment often stored in a garage, from expensive DIY tools to fitness and gardening equipment, it is no surprise that garages can be key targets for burglars.

Ensuring a secure garage door in any build is a big selling point for builders and a big plus for home owners – and the best choice has to be a door from Garador’s specialist Guardian range.

The Guardian range is Britain’s first range of Up & Over doors that are Secured by Design accredited (a UK police security initiative). It has been engineered specifically to offer an extra level of security without compromising design and functionality. The doors have additional back braces on the inside of the door for greater rigidity, improved and reinforced locking systems and a unique anti-snap cylinder with a sacrificial front to prevent entry even after an attack.

The Guardian range offers comes in three different styles, Carlton, Horizon and Salisbury, each available in a range of fresh, vibrant colours.

Crittall helps maintain ‘industrial heritage’

A new landmark headquarters building in West London - a striking redevelopment of a Grade II listed garage and showroom - has been created using Crittall windows to reflect its historical context and satisfy conservation requirements.

The character of the building’s broad frontage has been retained – an important consideration because of its listing and its location in a conservation area - with Crittall large form Berkeley windows providing a significant visual aspect in the street scene. The Berkeley was originally created in order to replace existing 1920s and 1930s steel windows that were predominantly single pane leaded glass, exterior putty glazed.

Gilgen Door Systems

New energy-efficient automatic door delivers the looks and performance

Gilgen Door Systems has launched a new energy-efficient automatic door which overcomes the design limitations often associated with thermally insulated products, delivering a solution which is both elegant in appearance and efficient in operation.

The Gilgen PST <green wings> sliding door comes with lowprofile slimline looks and offers outstanding energy performance, expressed as ‘U’ values, enabling entrances to be built sustainably without compromising design.

The technologically advanced Gilgen SLX-M drive system and energy-efficient PST door profiles combine to form a single unit. As part of the Gilgen <green wings> automatic door range, this combination provides a robust thermal barrier with a low visible profile similar to a standard automatic door.

The design of these doors, with their thermally separated profiles combined with double or triple glazing (up to 38mm thick) goes far beyond that of conventional sliding doors - both in terms of function and design; the compact drive mechanism and slim profiles being well matched to the straight lines of today’s modern architecture.

Maximum heat insulation, low investment costs

With system ‘U’ values of 1.1 to 1.8, depending on the configuration, these automatic doors fulfil the exacting demands of architects, specifiers and building owners in a World where energy efficiency and sustainability are a growing concern. Smooth operation helps these doors to create energy savings and reduce utility costs.

Independent test evidence provides proof of the low ‘U’ values and low air permeability to match. Furthermore high wind load capacity and resistance to driving rain makes the PST automatic door ideal for exposed locations. Designed to EN16005 standards Gilgen PST is available in single or two leaf bi-parting configurations for 700-3000mm opening widths and is competitively priced.

Boon Edam

Looking to control the temperature of your lobby? With a Boon Edam heater it’s a breeze!

During periods of cold and windy weather, why allow the temperature in your lobby to drop? Just because it is chilly outside, doesn’t mean your reception area should be cold too.The revolving door has become a significant choice for many architects and facilities managers due to the way they naturally help to keep out draughts and reduce energy loss within a building. The cost saving decision to install a revolving door not only reduces your monthly energy bills but it is also more eco-friendly for the environment due to the reduced amount of hot air that leaves the building with every door rotation. Still feeling the cold? Why not consider adding a Boon Edam heater onto your door?

Selectaglaze

Helping projects achieve BREEAM ratings

The thermal efficiency of our buildings and the energy we waste, have become important topics both on an environmental and financial level. Selectaglaze secondary glazing systems using low emissivity glass can reduce heat loss by more than half and achieve a U-value of around 1.9. With sealed unit glazing this is further reduced, and a figure as low as 0.8 can be achieved. Bespoke manufacture and high performance seals ensure the tightest fit, reducing air infiltration and almost eliminating drafts. Selectaglaze secondary glazing has been used to help achieve BREEAM ratings on various projects, Wiltshire Town Hall and Ham Yard Hotel have achieved a BREEAM excellent rating, and Albany House and Mortimer Street apartments have received a BREEAM “Very Good”. Savile Row refurbishment overcomes height restrictions with AET Flexible Space

AET Flexible Space have recently supplied their under floor air conditioning system and bespoke teak finish raised access flooring to another height restricted London refurbishment at 28 Savile Row Mayfair, fully redeveloped by Allied London.

With AET Flexible Space systems, fully conditioned air is fed into the plenum by zonal downflow units (CAM), which is then introduced into the space via floor recessed fan terminal units or Fantiles, which are easily relocated with the 600 x 600 mm raised floor tiles and also feature integrated controllers allowing users to personally adjust temperature and fan speed settings.

The CAM-C units introduce conditioned air at floor level into the plenum beneath the raised floor and then receive return air at floor level for reconditioning. This configuration allows maximum use of available space through the elimination or reduction of the ceiling void.

The AET Flexible Space system is ideal for this type of refurbishment project. By eliminating ceiling based services, it enables older buildings to be equipped with high specification air-conditioning whilst maximising the available floor to ceiling height.

Retrofitting a typical fan coil, VAV or split system air-conditioning into a ceiling on such a project requires the creation.

They also manufacture specialist sacrificial cables for use under hot tarmac. Their dedicated project team has a huge range of experience in specifying ice and snow melting products for yearround access.

Rinnai is really motoring aboard the bedroam bus

Rinnai, the leading continuous flow gas fired water heater manufacturer, has seen its products installed in numerous sites with unusual applications but one project has pushed the boundaries of the unusual. The project is so unusual it caught the eye of Channel 4’s ‘Amazing Spaces’ presented by George Clarke and the Rinnai product was one of the stars of the show.

‘Bedroam’ is the brainchild of Ollie Kemp, a farmer, motor racing competitor and enthusiast from Melbourne, Yorkshire. He wasn’t happy with the lack of onsite accommodation at events that would allow competitors to stay close to their expensive and irreplaceable racing gear.

The constructive result of this dissatisfaction is the Bedroam bus, complete with 18 Japanese-style pod bedrooms. As well as using it himself for motorsport meets, Bedroam is available to hire. “If you can’t get a hotel when you’re going to a wedding or don’t want to camp at a festival then this is the perfect solution,” he told George Clarke of ‘Amazing Spaces’. Needless to say he has been inundated with bookings.

The Bedroam has two fully-equipped bathrooms with shower, toilet and sink. Sinks and showers are supplied with safe temperature controlled hot water from Rinnai Infinity LPG water heaters, complete with MC91 controller, via motion sensor-operated taps. Two Rinnai Infinity 17e external units fitted to the back of the bus drawing water from a bespoke designed tank designed and supplied by Barratt Tanks of Ferrybridge West Yorkshire.

Bedroam also includes air conditioning, flat screen TVs, comfortable communal areas and a multifunctional outdoor space provided by an enclosed awning.

“I first saw Rinnai units in operation at an event where there were luxury mobile showers powered by Rinnai units. On my return, I researched Rinnai online and spoke to my friend Andy, a registered Gas Safe engineer also based in Melbourne, who then ordered and undertook the installation.

Andy Dixon, who runs his own plumbing and heating service, explains: “The boilers had to go on the back of the bus as Ollie was struggling to find enough space inside. As the bus has an air con system, I had already put a cooling radiator off the back so the two Rinnai units sat very handily behind that simply hung on a metal grid attached to the back of the bus.

“Piping was easy. I used plastic pipework for both hot and cold outlets running to a little plant room where the back seats of the bus were originally which is directly beneath the bathrooms from where the water is pumped to the header tank via a small 12V. “Rinnai’s technical guys were very helpful when I phoned them initially for some advice and installation of the units was really easy. I will definitely be using Rinnai again,” says Andy.

Omnie delivers renewable heat for new rural residence

A large new residential property, built to replace a former lock keeper’s cottage in the heart of the Somerset countryside, has made use of two underfloor heating systems from the OMNIE range to deliver highly efficient renewable heating. The five-bedroom Barton Grange has been constructed on property dating back to the 1840s and the building of the Chard Canal, which connected to the Bridgwater and Taunton Canal. The cottage and surrounding land were used as a dairy farm after the waterway closed in 1868. Despite its scale, the new dwelling is well insulated and the owners have chosen to utilize a pair of ground source heat pumps: With six bathrooms, hot water demand is particularly high and therefore, a pair of Omnie SWC 140S heat pumps, were linked to shallow pipe arrays laid across a nearby field.

Methven’s patented Satinjet technology uses specially aligned jets that collide to create thousands of droplets per second. Optimised at just nine litres per minute, it is also able to deliver considerable savings on water and energy use.

Barbara Osborne, product manager at Methven UK, said: “Square overhead showers have become increasingly popular with consumers and we are pleased to now offer them greater choice in our range, whilst allowing them to benefit from the luxurious and immersive Satinjet showering experience.”

Karndean Designflooring introduces newly extended Van Gogh Wood collection

The UK’s market leader in luxury vinyl flooring Karndean Designflooring is expanding its popular Van Gogh Wood collection.

Inspired by reclaimed natural wood materials, the 12 distinct new plank designs replicate the unique look that comes from the transformation of wood over time, in addition to processes such as burning, liming and smoking.

The four groups, French Oaks, American Redwood, Scottish Beech and Mexican Cypress ensure a grain and colour palette to suit a wide variety of commercial and public sector projects.

The four lightly lime-washed French Oak looks, VGW91T Tawny Oak, VGW92T Burgundy Oak, VGW93T Hessian Oak and VGW94T Honey Oak are reminiscent of salvaged antique flooring. The rich grain details and large scaled planks (48”x 7”) complement both traditional and contemporary architecture, and the larger size means reduced downtime and installation costs.

The collection also includes three unique designs inspired by American Redwood railway sleepers – VGW99T Reclaimed Redwood, VGW100T Aged Redwood and VGW101T Salvaged Redwood. Running with the theme of reclaimed woods, Karndean’s product designers were drawn to the unique detail and texture of the Redwood ties, which over the years had aged beautifully.

Introducing wire brushing and etching techniques, they have taken the natural aging process one step further with these three designs, giving the American Redwood designs the look of repurposed timber without the practical drawbacks of real wood such as splintering, cracking and warping.

A perfect foundation for any commercial environment, the three rich brown, smoked designs create a rich and warm canvas. Incorporating fuming and smoking techniques that have been used by real wood flooring manufacturers for years, the rich brown tones of our VGW97T Burnished Beech and VGW98T Smoked Beech planks can accompany nearly any décor scheme, whilst the striking variation of VGW102T Charred Oak makes a real statement.

The new collection is rounded off by the stunning VGW95T Lime-washed Cypress and VGW96T Burnished Cypress. Combining the limed finish of Honey Oak and the burnt effect of Charred Oak, these two designs are some of the most detailed in the entire collection. The result of liming and smoking techniques is a more refined and sophisticated aesthetic, perfect for any commercial space benefiting from a highly realistic, rustic feel.

“Our new Van Gogh designs are our boldest to date. They are a welcome addition and reflect the trends we’re seeing for authentic and textured interiors for commercial applications,” commented Paul Barratt, managing director at Karndean Designflooring.

“The collection is not only design-led, but also retains all the durability, ease of maintenance and availability our customers have come to rely on.’’

Available with a recently extended 15 year commercial warranty and R10 slip ratings, the complete Karndean Designflooring Van Gogh collection will now feature a total of 32 wood designs.

A HI-MACS® façade for Bershka, on the historic shopping street of Meir, in Antwerp

The architects of Boud Rombouts and the façade specialists from Apers & Partners chose HI-MACS® solid surface material for the façade of its flagship store in the prestigious Mier, Antwerp. HI-MACS provides a non-porous, homogeneous surface, is high quality and smooth, but at the same time robust, weatherresistant, impact-resistant and easy to clean. Graffiti can be removed without leaving a trace and the HI-MACS sheets are also lightweight, strong and fixed invisibly. The real challenge of this project was conservation as the Bershka store consists of a total of five buildings in an historic part of the Belgian city. The HI-MACS acrylic stone slabs in Alpine White have a similar appearance to the historic facades.

Marmox

Commercial office conversion for Brighton campus features Marmox Tektalan board installation

Close to a thousand square metres of Tektalan boards, manufactured by Heraklith and supplied by Marmox UK, have been consumed in the conversion of former American Express premises into a major new media centre for the University of Brighton. The panels were specified to improve the thermal and acoustic performance, as well as the appearance of several soffit areas within the buildings. These included the underside of two structural concrete floors and an entrance canopy. Within these spaces they help cut reverberation and present a smart, textured surface. Tektalan represents a hybrid combination of Marmox Heraklith Woodwool boards with rock mineral wool, which enhances the product’s already impressive performance characteristics. The woodwool element provides the strength and rigidity together with the unique appearance and sound absorption.
