Rinnai: ‘ErP labelling offers easy and effective hot water heater specification’

Rinnai is calling on the industry to take advantage of ErP transparency to guarantee they specify the most efficient A-rated system possible when specifying a hot water heating system and not be drawn into choosing less efficient models.

Chris Goggin, Operations Director at Rinnai UK, designer and manufacturer of the A-rated Infinity range of continuous flow gas fired water heaters, says the benefits of the implementation of the Energy Labelling Directive (ErP) for specifiers looking for the most efficient water heating system are already evident just a few months down the line from implementation*.

“The transparency provided by ErP for buyers means they can see immediately where to source the highest rated energy efficient product. There is now no reason

for specifiers to choose anything other than category A water heaters. We have seen Rinnai expand its customer base exponentially as installers and specifiers clearly see, due to the labelling directive, the advantage of installing the most expansive range of A-rated load profiles on any range of continuous flow water heaters today.”

He explains that before ErP labelling came into force stake holders were tending to stick with product they knew rather than negotiate the minefield that then allowed manufacturers to claim as efficient product that has been tested to a D category under present rules.

Suspended Brickwork: Four ways to create attractive soffit details

Deep reveals and soffits are an increasingly popular design feature that add an extra depth and dimension to masonry façades. Creating these effects can be key to the aesthetics of the building but can pose engineering problems as the main building façade must be maintained across an opening, while seeming to be unsupported by structural steelwork.

The unique expertise of ANCON in the design and manufacture of high integrity steel components has enabled the company to develop four effective solutions to achieve this popular design feature – allowing architects greater freedom in design.

Solutions range from the suspension of factory-made brick faced steel or precast concrete units that are simply lifted and bolted to the underside of an Ancon MDC brick support system, to more complex hanger systems that are assembled on site using Ancon stirrups and stitching rods or channels and dowelled wall ties. All systems are manufactured to meet individual project specifications. System designs vary depending on factors such as load, cavity, soffit dimensions, brick pattern and coursing.

Vandersanden supplies bricks for London’s Hallsville Quarter

Belgian brick manufacturer, Vandersanden Group, has supplied the facing bricks used to construct phase one of London’s Hallsville Quarter. For the initial phase of the project, 420,000 Drayton cream, crease textured, unicoloured soft yellow bricks were used for the external walls of the development. Hallsville Quarter is a key part of Newham Council’s £3.7 billion regeneration programme and one of London’s largest regeneration schemes including 1,100 mixed tenure housing units and more than 323,000ft2 of leisure and retail space.

Formica Group announces Formica Formations competition winners

Formica Group has announced the winners of Formica Formations – a competition inviting European design students to explore and reinvent the concept of light using Formica laminate.

The competition saw three winning lighting designs selected out of 40 high calibre entries from 146 students across seven universities in France, Spain and the UK. Light Nest was awarded the top spot, followed by WAK, and Lilies respectively.

The designs were judged by an international panel consisting of: American designer, art director and Pentagram partner Abbott Miller; the Swedish architect, designer and founder of Claesson Koivisto Rune, Eero Koivisto; and two Formica Group designers Renee Hytry Derrington, Group VP Design, and Eva Hoernisch, Design Manager Europe.

The students behind the winning design, Light Nest, have created a lighting module with the functionality to convert transitional, waiting, restless and noisy areas, where occupants can feel stifled, into a cosy space. Depending on the user’s needs, each module can be positioned on the metal structure according to light requirements.

Inspired by the expression ‘wake up’, second place WAK is designed to bring intimate spaces and a cosy environment to the user through lighting. In third place, Lilies’ gingko leaves and vegetal vibes represent a return to nature, providing an ambient light that invades dark corners and vacant areas to produce a relaxed atmosphere.

It is 50% faster to install than traditional alternatives and as it is a totally dry glaze system there is no need for wet cement. Conforming to BS6180:2011 the product is completely unique because it uses a horizontal TAPER-LOC design, which allows the system to be adjusted, dismantled and re-set easily and efficiently. Shackerley cladding is right on track at Newbury Racecourse

Ventilated façade specialist Shackerley has supplied over 3000m2 of white SureClad ceramic granite cladding for three luxurious apartment complexes at one of the UK’s premier racecourses.

Carruthers Court, Chatham House and Bregawn House have been developed by David Wilson Homes in partnership with Newbury Racecourse. Two of the buildings directly overlook the racetrack, offering spectacular panoramic views from spacious tiered balconies.

The apartments were the first to be completed on land adjacent to the racecourse, as part of a ten-year homebuilding programme. Shackerley’s cladding has provided a crisp and contemporary aesthetic and maintained design continuity with the neighbouring grandstand.

“We particularly wanted to reflect the sharp and angular, tiered look,” said Andrew Smith, Associate at Roberts Limbrick Architects, the practice that specified Shackerley’s SureClad façade system in the designs that went to tender. “We were looking for a premium quality material with very hardwearing, durable properties that would contrast with the red brickwork and deliver that typical vernacular styling. Shackerley’s SureClad solution provided everything our client was looking for – a fantastic low maintenance façade material, and flexible installation systems to accommodate all requirements. Nothing had to be compromised.”

Shackerley’s most economic 1200 x 600mm façade panel format was used with a SureClad Access system to clad balcony partitions. To reduce installation time and costs of cladding all balcony edges, Shackerley supplied a bracketed beam unit comprising fascia, soffit and cill components which was prefabricated and delivered to site, ready to install as part of a SureClad Hang On system. New façade for retail giant

Primark, the popular high street brand recently opened an exciting new store at the Fort Kinnaird shopping park in Edinburgh, equipped with a dazzling external screening solution from Levolux. The solution, which is applied to the store’s façade along the front and on both sides, comprises a combination of 200mm wide rectangular fins and 300mm wide, twisted aerofoilshaped fins. All fins are formed from single-piece aluminium extrusions, which are designed, fabricated and installed by Levolux. The store’s projecting entrance is now wrapped in aerofoil-shaped fins, each measuring 300mm wide by 56mm thick, standing vertically and set at a pitch of 310mm.

As the world’s leading integrated copper group and largest copper recycler, Aurubis is redefining the material for contemporary architecture with the ongoing development of its ‘Nordic’ products providing straightaway surfaces that otherwise take years to develop in the atmosphere - particularly for facades. Nordic Brown pre-oxidised copper offers lighter or darker shades of brown, determined by the thickness of the oxide layer. Then, Nordic Blue and Nordic Green ranges enable designers to determine both the colour and intensity of patina with ‘living’ surfaces. As well as solid green, blue and turquoise patina colour, other intensities can be created revealing some of the dark oxidised background material. Aurubis’ experts can also work with architects to develop specific levels of patination to meet design requirements or to match historically patinated copper.

Of course, copper alloys have also been used throughout history and Nordic Bronze and Nordic Brass (which can also be preweathered) are used for architectural applications. In addition, an innovative alloy of copper with aluminium and zinc – Nordic Royal – gives a rich golden through-colour retained over time, simply developing a protective matt finish without any green or blue patination.

In the first application in Scotland of DuPont Corian as a rain screen façade, architectural practice Chambers McMillan has created an elegant exterior ‘shell’ as part of an architecturally sympathetic extension to a much-loved period home.

The addition creates a small garden room with a canopy covering an external area and connecting it to the house, including a linear workbench which continues through the glazing to the outside area beneath the canopy.

Maximising the multiple benefits of DuPont Corian high-tech surface, this highperformance rain screen has an enduring beauty. Corian Quality Network Industrial Partners, RMC Worktops delivered the precise fabrication, preparation and installation of approximately 35 sq m of the material, supplied by CD (UK) Ltd.

The 45 degree angled corners and junctions help create a seamless effect between the walls and the roof, which has concealed guttering.

The visual solidity of the Corian cladding complements and contrasts with the Victorian stone built original structure, while the Anthracite colour specified is tonally similar to the existing slate roof, while having a lustre that brings the Corian to life, on the most overcast of days.

Polypipe has seen its popular Ridgistorm-XL large diameter piping system installed as part of a water management attenuation solution for residential developers Kensington Developments.

Situated in the village of Marton, near Blackpool, the Magnolia Point development consists of 45 detached and 38 semi-detached three and four bedroom new family homes.

Due to the layout of the site, there was a limited public open space available to install a suitable attenuation system capable of storing the required stormwater for the development.

Part of Graf UK’s market-leading EcoBloc range of stormwater systems, the EcoBloc Maxx is completely modular and made from expertly designed plastic cells that fit seamlessly together to build a tailormade stormwater solution. Its innovative design not only allows for complete ease of installation, but provides high storage volume and is conveniently stackable –minimising transport costs, CO2 emissions and storage space in stock. For stormwater attenuation, EcoBloc systems can be surrounded by an impermeable membrane to prevent any water from escaping the system unchecked. Marley Alutec hits the road on EcoShowcase tour

Marley Alutec is once again hitting the road, showcasing its full range of aluminium rainwater and eaves systems at four EcoShowcase events throughout 2016.

Visitors from around the nation will be able to view the company’s comprehensive selection of products. Marley Alutec heads to London’s Wembley Stadium on 17 May, before arriving at Leicester’s King Power Stadium on 5 July and finally Birmingham’s Edgbaston Cricket Ground on 11 October.

Polypipe was approached to review the initial site drainage plan and worked alongside Consultant Engineer, Elluc Projects Ltd to design an alternative solution to meet the needs of both a 1 in 30 and 1 in 100 year storm events under Section 104 agreement.

The selected system was required to fit within an area of 1.25km² and store 680m3 680m3 of stormwater. In order to meet these requirements Elluc Projects Ltd specified an attenuation tank formed of 482m of Ridgistorm-XL 1200mm diameter SN2 pipe and fittings.

Polypipe was able to take into account the site conditions in order to engineer the Ridgistorm-XL system to exact structural calculations. These calculations ensured that the Ridgistorm-XL system was designed to accommodate vehicles onsite, both during the backfilling and post installation.

The modularised system boasted 17 pipe runs as well as 20 prefabricated fittings, including 17 1200mm 90 degree bends, C and F sections, as well as 3 1800mm RIDGISTORMAccess Manholes. The system was connected together with sealing rings, the simplest jointing method which does not require welding, helping to save time during the installation.

Manufactured in Polypipe’s in-house specialist facility, the Ridgistorm-XL system was delivered to site in ready-to-install modular units, allow for easy handling, whilst reducing the need for heavy plant and minimising time and installation cost.

Richard Fox, Quantity Surveyor at Kensington Developments, said: “It was of paramount importance that the attenuation system used could be designed to fit into our limited available footprint. Polypipe’s pre-fabrication facilities meant that the system was designed and delivered to fit. The pre-fabricated fittings also assisted for a speedier installation, and reduced health and safety risks on site.”

Vikki Woodhouse, WMS Residential Manager at Polypipe Civils, said: “We have vast experience in providing water management solutions. The Ridgistorm-XL attenuation tank needed to be designed to fit within the limited space available and so Polypipe’s technical experts were on-hand to advise on the design from the beginning of the project. We were given a very unique project and designed a fully engineered system, taking all of Kensington Development’s requirements into consideration providing expert stormwater for the site.”

Hauraton Limited introduced the RECYFIX® MONOTEC, their new high capacity channel system in January, the new Western Super Mare Travelodge being the first installation of the system in the United Kingdom.

The MONOTEC channels installed in the Travelodge, 47 space, main car park have a nominal grating width of 100mm, an overall height of 380mm and are suitable for a loading category of up to Class D400. The channels provide a cross-section of 355.5cm2 and have a high attenuation volume.

The RECYFIX® MONOTEC one metre long channel component is of a sturdy monolithic design where the HEELSAFE grating and the tongue and groove linking system are integral to the channel moulding. The whole unit is made of tough, virtually unbreakable polypropylene (PP) formulated to be very resistant to daily temperature fluctuations from frost conditions to strong sunlight, including the Ultra Violet (UV) spectrum. PP is naturally resistant to de-icing salt. Complying with the requirements of EN 1433, the PP is given its UV resistance by adding just sufficient carbon black as a stabiliser so that the structural strength of the material is unaffected and a consistent appearance is maintained.

Controlling surface water flooding was a vital consideration in planning and building Mid Devon’s new £8.42 million A3072 Crediton Link Road.

By using Hydro-Brake Optimum vortex flow controls as part of a SuDS approach, South West Highways (SWH) & Devon County Council (DCC) were able to meet Environment Agency requirements for discharge limits at a 1 in 100 year level and reduce flood risk in nearby rivers Creedy and Yeo. Three Hydro-Brake Optimum vortex flow controls were fitted with maximum discharges of 5 l/s, 20 l/s and 30 l/s via storage tanks, a swale and an attenuation pond to the field drains and eventually the rivers Creedy and Yeo.

Hundreds of square metres of thermo-acoustic woodwool boards made by Heraklith and supplied by by Marmox have been employed in the restoration of a church building following weather damage. During the painstaking work a total of 135 standard Heraklith panels were cut to shape on site and decorated as desired by the consultants to match as closely as possible the original decorative scheme. Heraklith panels are produced from natural timber fibres to provide a durable and versatile wood wool insulation. They are simple to cut and fix with conventional tools.

Tailor-made solution for Essex University’s new £26 million Student Centre

Creative solutions for the ceiling of the impressive, new £26 million Student Centre at the University of Essex demonstrates how far Hunter Douglas will go to keep true to an architect’s vision. The design for the ceiling at the new Silberrad Student Centre at the university’s Colchester campus saw the team devise a creative solution to accommodate the 70m2 solid wood open linear European oak ceiling. As well using a patented clip used to secure the panels to the sendzimir galvanised steel suspension rails, the panels, which appear to float, required specially made metal fixings to accommodate the non-standard width. The original design called for a panel width that was narrower than the metal fixing clip, so Hunter Douglas suggested a wider panel with a deep groove in the front to give the appearance of very narrow boards.

illbruck high-performance seals for Welsh university

Airseal and weathertight membranes from tremco illbruck helped contractors fix several hundred windows in newbuild student accommodation at Bangor University in North Wales. ME501 Duo Window Membrane HD with a K03 EPDM gasket solution was the membrane of choice as it can be dry fitted directly to the UPVc frame with no need for any adhesives except at corners to seal. ME501 was then bonded to the CP board with SP525 Frame and Façade Sealant during dryer conditions.

ME500 Duo Flexible Window Membrane with self-adhesive strip and butyl strip was then attached from the internal face of the UPVc window to the SFS steel frame section to create an airtight seal.

The British Allied Trade Federation’s (BATF) head office in Birmingham is the latest building to benefit from EasiLume’s LED lighting. Office design company Accent Office Interiors recently refurbished its reception and main ground floor corridor, transforming these areas from dark and unwelcoming to bright and modern. EasiLume’s circular LED lights, LED panels and emergency lighting formed an integral part of the new design.

Good lighting is essential to a happy and productive workforce. Studies have shown productivity is greater and health problems fewer where the lighting –particularly LED – is good. Edward Williams Furniture and Sam Kopsch Studio with Peldon Rose Workplace Consultantshave used Glacier White Corian from CD UK to make a bespoke boat shaped reception desk for a Thames-side serviced office building in London.

The reception features suspended propellers and two acrylic wall-mounted, back-lit boat hulls. Taking pride of place in in the double-height interior, the distinctive 10m by 3m desk used 30 sheets of Glacier White Corian, thermoformed by the Edward Williams team to create a seamless finish using their in house thermoformer. Working drawings for the desk were created by the company’s CAD team from the initial nautical design concept, inspired by yacht maker Sunseeker.

Booths has relocated one of its stores to Poulton-le-Fylde and selected of high quality column casings from Pendock for the interior fit-out. Pendock supplied nine column casings to surround the standard structural steel sections: three oval in appearance and the other six circular.

For continuity of style, both types are clad with attractive brushed finish aluminium bonded to the plywood casings up to one metre in height, while above this a RAL 7037 Dusty Grey shade of the company’s Mouse Laminate was specified, rising to ceiling height. Pendock’s column casings are available with a very wide selection of finishes and can incorporate lighting or other services.
