Welcome
Product manufacturing rises but investment stalls amid Brexit uncertainty
The construction products manufacturing sector reported favourable results in the first quarter of 2019, with continued growth in the sales of products and materials.
Despite the environment of uncertainty relating to Brexit, manufacturers’ sales expectations for the next 12 months remained optimistic.
The Construction Products Association’s State of Trade Survey for 2019 Q1 reveals a balance of 46% of both heavy side and light side manufacturers experienced a rise in sales during the quarter. Growth in product manufacturers’ output is anticipated to rise further in the coming months, with 33% of heavy side firms and half of those on the light side expecting an increase in sales in Q2.
A lack of clarity over the political and economic situation may be holding back product manufacturers’ capital investment, however. Only 8% of heavy side firms, on balance, reported an annual increase in investment in structures and 17% reported investment in plant and equipment was higher than a year ago. This compares to five-year average balances of 21% and 54%, respectively.
offices, industrial factories and high-end residential.
“Contrast this with almost half of product manufacturers reporting increased sales in Q1, and the anecdotes of onsite stockpiling further down the supply chain seem to be ringing true.
“Although the uncertain climate may be helping manufacturers’ sales, the negative impact has been on the sector’s capital investment.
“Heavy side firms have reported a noticeable slowing in investment in new buildings and plant, and investment intentions for the next year remain equally muted.
“With the risk of a No-Deal Brexit and its damaging effect on construction activity still present, clarity is urgently required.”

Kemper System
Kemper System tops London’s best new extension
Kemper System has helped to create an award-winning home extension, featuring a unique swooping roof structure. Designed by architects Tonkin Liu, the ‘Sun Rain Room’ forms part of the restoration of a Grade II Listed Georgian townhouse in London. Kemper System’s Kemperol 2K-PUR was specified to waterproof a main feature of the extension - a curved, 10m-long roof, which has been constructed above a new garden room on the ground floor. After the Kemperol 2K-PUR had been applied, it was topped with richly planted sedum. However, as parts of the roof’s perimeter remained visible, Kemperol Reflect was also applied. This is a white waterproofing system ensuring the surface temperature remains cooler than when using traditional darker roofing materials.

CUPA PIZARRAS
Cupa Pizarras chosen for Camphill Blair Drummond
CUPA PIZARRAS has been specified for the historic Camphill Blair Drummond site. In keeping with the area’s heritage Heavy 3 slate was chosen for six stunning homes for day students and residents; due to its desired aesthetics, durability and flexibility. Located in the outskirts of Stirling amongst rolling hills and exquisite Scottish scenery, Camphill Blair Drummond provides a warm, friendly and home-from-home living environment for young people with complex learning difficulties. With the traditional setting, it was imperative that a roofing slate was chosen that could fit in with the historic design of the buildings. CUPA PIZARRAS’ Heavy 3 is popular in Scottish heritage areas due to its resemblance to Ballachulish, the time-honoured blue-black slate. This appears on many older buildings but is no longer quarried in Scotland.

Fifteen not out for Resiblock and developer
Resiblock and Rialto Homes are celebrating the 15th anniversary of the successful sealing of the Hewetts Quay site in Barking. Barking and Dagenham Council had anticipated that any flooding from the local River Roding would lead to removal of jointing sand and the potential for destabilisation of the bedding sand. With the use of Clay Blocks at Hewetts Quay this risk was further heightened. Resiblock liaised with both Rialto Homes and Barking and Dagenham Council and Resiblock ‘22’ was installed in the Spring of 2004. In the 15 years since, Resiblock ‘22’ has withstood all minor flooding that has occurred in the area, whilst also protecting against trafficking in the area.

Amtico chosen for Tenpin’s refurbishment
When Tenpin decided to reconfigure the layout of its leisure complex in Hounslow and embark on a complete refurbishment, it was in need of practical flooring that could cope with a high level of footfall, and Amtico proved to be the perfect choice. The Amtico Signature collection was used in the approach to the bowling lanes to direct the player to the game, while also making the bowlers’ lanes distinct from one another. The design agency, Dover Design, achieved this by devising their own bespoke laying pattern, utilising Amtico’s precision cutting capabilities to create triangle-shaped LVT tiles. Amtico Carpet tiles were used throughout the rest of the facility, as they are hard wearing, easy to replace and allowed the design team to create specific zones. They also helped create the illusion of pathways through the layout, guiding visitors to different zones.

Helifix concealed repairs restore failed arches at listed brewery
The 170 year old, Grade ll listed, Hook Norton Brewery in Oxfordshire, was suffering from internal and external cracking due to the failure of 15 brick arches. This was caused by the decay of internal timbers and movement of the surrounding brickwork. HeliBars were bonded into mortar beds above each opening, on both the interior and exterior walls, forming masonry beams that reinforced the brickwork, supported the wall above and spread the loads. Other cracks were stitched using single HeliBars bonded across the cracks. These sympathetic repairs efficiently and economically restored integrity whilst retaining the original materials and aesthetics of this important listed structure.
“The commercial sector is an area which is expanding and becoming a sizeable part of Spirotech’s business. The addition of Mark, Paul and Jacqui builds on Spirotech’s success throughout 2018, for both domestic and commercial markets. We are looking forward to further developing our market share this year and reinforcing our position as a trusted supplier to the commercial sector.”

Completing the Circle
Creating a fresh new look for its offices and stores, Belgian supermarket giant, the Colruyt Group, has turned to UNILIN, division panels, to help it complete the circle and repurpose its old retail and office interior fittings.
The family-owned Colruyt Group is famed for its sustainable approach to retailing and is active in many initiatives positively impacting its entire supply chain. As part of its drive towards a circular, sustainable approach - that it sees just as important as competitive pricing – the retailer has placed reuse high on its agenda. So, when it came to creating a fresh new look for its offices, it turned to its long-running relationship with UNILIN, division panels, to see what could be done:
“Our current chipboard is 100% circular,” explains specification director, Christof De Poorter. “Comprising 85% recycled wood, the remaining 15% is sourced from thinning and waste flows from the timber industry. We save an average of 5,000 trees per day and reduce CO2 emissions by some 1.2million tonnes a year.”

Colruyt Group took this circular process one step further, delivering its old panels and shelves directly to UNILIN, so that they could be recycled and returned for use in its new offices. UNILIN undertook a sophisticated cleaning process involving a range of technologies including NIR (near infared), sifting, induction and magnetism, before working them into new Evola panels to be used within the retailer’s offices. Selecting H720 BST White Birch and 625 BST Silicon, Colruyt has selected a look that’s fresh, yet easy to maintain and resistant to the knocks of modern working environments. More importantly, it has brought new transparency to the materials it specifies.
“We sense just how important sustainability is to our customers and our circular approach helps them to take action,” continues Christof De Poorter. “Colruyt’s approach and commitment to taking every step possible to become more sustainable shows that consumers are no longer buying just a product, they place a great deal of importance on the complete production chain.”
Colruyt is not the only company to take advantage of UNILIN’s circular chipboard production with more and more organisations looking for positive actions on sustainability to increase transparency and gain competitive advantage.

ITP
“A” First Class Flame Retardant Membrane
In a UK building materials first, Industrial Textiles & Plastics (ITP) has launched a Euroclass A2 flame retardant breathable membrane for roof and wall installations. Powerlon FlameOut Breathe Class A is a woven material, engineered to be rated noncombustible according to the highest level of UK and European standards. Independently tested to EN 13501-1, FlameOut Breathe Class A is rated A2-s1,d0. Prior to the launch of this innovative multipurpose breather membrane, the highest level of flame retardant breather materials offered in the UK were Class 0 (BS 476 Parts 6 & 7) or Euroclass B.
The introduction of FlameOut Breathe Class A is timely: changes to UK building regulations have banned the use of combustible materials on the external walls of new buildings over 18 metres that contain flats, plus new hospitals, residential care properties and dormitories in schools and student accommodation. “FlameOut Breathe Class A represents a new generation of fire protection materials for the construction industry,” said ITP’s Managing Director, Marc van der Voort. “It builds on our two decades of experience in flame retardant technology for construction materials as well as temporary containment sheeting.”
While the Euroclass B rating is the highest for flammable materials, Class A2 rated materials are non-combustible. The S1 rating indicates very limited smoke development while the d0 rating shows no burning droplets when the material is exposed to direct flame during the testing process.
CE Certified FlameOut Breathe Class A is heavyweight with very high tensile strength, good water vapour transmission and is rated W1 for water tightness. Proprietary FR tapes and glues are offered with the membrane for effective installation.
Other flame retardant breather membranes in the Powerlon range include FlameOut Breathe (rated Class B-s1,d0) and UV resistant breather membranes, which are suitable for use behind open or closed ventilated rainscreens and facades: Powerlon UV145FR (Class B-s3,d0) and Powerlon UV Colour FR (Class B-s2,d0). Also in the FlameOut product range are FlameOut Block and FlameOut Block Plus, flame retardant vapour control layers (VCLs) rated Class B-s1,d0.

EXTERNAL WORKS & DRAINAGE
Interpave
The Future is Permeable New legal requirements for Sustainable Drainage System (SuDS) on developments across Wales now apply, heralding wider use of concrete block permeable paving. Meanwhile, the trade association Interpave has published the new Edition 7 of its definitive guidance to this essential SuDS technique.
Welsh National Standards point out that: “The SuDS approach mimics natural drainage, managing surface runoff at or close to the surface … and providing a range of additional benefits. …. Where SuDS are on the surface, high quality visual impact is essential to ensuring public acceptability and maximise amenity benefits.”
By its very nature, concrete block permeable paving is uniquely placed to meet these requirements, as an attractive, surface-based, multifunctional SuDS technique.
Permeable paving provides an inherent drainage system that requires no additional land take for water storage, treatment or conveyance. It also addresses both flooding and pollution issues, eliminating pipework, gulleys and manholes, and should therefore cost less than conventional drainage and paving.
Interpave’s new ‘Design and Construction of Concrete Block Permeable Pavements’ guidance covers the latest permeable paving techniques. The structural and hydraulic engineering design procedures have been comprehensively updated and new, straightforward maintenance guidance added. The guide is freely available to download via www.paving.org.uk

An effective surface water drainage system was essential to ensure all weather access to the venue. 140 metres of Hauraton RECYFIX® PRO 100 channels with FIBRETEC® heel-safe gratings were chosen for the job which blended well with the stone paving and would resist damage from applied grit rock salt in freezing weather. The material, PA-GF used to make the FIBRETEC® grating, was especially developed by Hauraton; the tough, UV resistant, fibre reinforced moulding offers high stability and huge strength for its weight.

Floors, Walls & Ceilings
Three is the magic number for new modular housing scheme
An innovative combination of three reflective, low emissivity wall construction membranes from Protect Membranes has been used to deliver the magic formula for a flagship affordable housing scheme in Swansea on behalf of Gwalia Housing / Pobl Group, delivering thermal efficiency benefits and reduced heat loss.
Based on the former Four Seasons Social Club site, the development is made up of 41 timber frame properties, offering a mix of one, two and three bedroom homes that provide a modern living space in keeping with local architecture.
Appointed by main contractor Morganstone, timber frame specialist Seven Oaks Modular Ltd constructed the wall panels offsite in their factory, followed by delivery and installation on-site. Installing Protect’s reflective membrane solution helped Seven Oaks Modular to reduce material waste during manufacture and value engineer without severely impacting labour cost. The timber frame panels incorporated Protect TF InterFoil, a vapour permeable, reflective membrane installed on the cold side of the insulation, with the foil facing into an airspace to
deliver low emissivity performance. This was combined with Protect TF200 Thermo, a reflective, external breather membrane and Protect VC Foil Ultra, an internal vapour control layer on the warm side of the insulation to help create a radiant barrier. This system achieved the client’s target U-value of 0.19W/m2K and achieved important insulation savings, with a reduced thickness of PIR needed for the 140mm stud without increasing the overall wall footprint.
Warren Rowlands, Senior Designer at Seven Oaks Modular commented, “The use of Protect’s full reflective membrane system enabled us to not only value engineer this project but ensure a robust solution that provided affordability to the client. The innovative application of membranes offering low emissivity within unventilated cavities was easy to
incorporate into our timber frame panels at the factory, ensuring the structure retained thermal efficiency and met our target U-value.”

BAL
Amazing time and cost savings with BAL Flexbone 2Easy
Preparation time was reduced dramatically with the use of BAL’s new floating uncoupling mat – Flexbone 2Easy – on a prime redevelopment in County Durham. The 200m² problem screed to be tiled had two days of preparatory work scheduled before installation could even begin, but this was reduced to just half a day using BAL Flexbone 2Easy. The use of BAL Flexbone 2Easy floating uncoupling mat alleviated the need to abrade and prime the screed, as the only preparation required was a quick sweep of the surface. The mat was simply rolled out onto the screed, with the self-adhesive mesh bonding the mat edges together. Roll ends were secured with BAL AquaDrain ST-10 tape.

Mitsubishi
Construction industry lessons from the Fyre Festival fiasco
The fall-out from the controversial 2017 Fyre Festival will linger for a lot longer than the illfayed event itself managed to last.
Ellina Webb, senior marketing executive at Mitsubishi Electric, looks at why it should be seen as a cautionary tale for the project management and construction sector.
In short, Fyre Festival highlighted that with the right mix of marketing techniques you can sell anything. Essentially, what the organisers failed to acknowledge throughout the planning process was that hosting a festival is actually as complex as building a mini city. For a festival with 10,000 people for example, the power alone can cost between £60,000 – £100,000.
Whether building a city, a single building or a festival, planning requires a significant amount of time. In the UK, legislation is just one mechanism in controlling how all these elements are executed correctly so it’s surprising that festival organisers weren’t guided by these types of rules (I assume maybe things are more relaxed in the United States).
Ultimately, with this project the fundamental elements of the planning process were ignored; scope, time, cost, objectives, milestones, a work schedule and project tracking.
In construction, managing expectations and scope is really important. Clear communication and honesty is crucial even for your own mental wellbeing.

AkzoNobel
AkzoNobel passes testing industry standard with flying colours
At Blackburn-based AkzoNobel they know that an industry recognised standard assessment which tests various common ‘problems and challenges’ faced daily by its furniture lacquers is crucial in determining quality and longevity.
In undergoing a Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA) testing programme for a range of their products AkzoNobel can provide an unbiased, holistic and pragmatic set of results. AkzoNobel have had some very positive results
regarding FIRA testing on six of their most popular interior paint coating systems. In each product type FIRA tested a clear and opaque system with the AkzoNobel products achieving a full house of six passes.
The coating systems submitted for FIRA testing were based around three of AkzoNobel’s most popular and innovative systems; the Duracid Formaldehyde Free Acid Catalysed, Quantum and Aqualit systems.

HI-MACS
HI-MACS lights up new bar
Cervecería Islia is a modern, distinctive bar located in the town of Ordes, Spain, designed by studio PF1 with the organic forms and backlit furnishings created using HI-MACS® acrylic stone. The space has been divided into several areas, designed after extensive research into all the aspects of the surroundings, making it possible to determine which elements to emphasise.
PF1 faced an interesting challenge, since the space was very restricted, with a narrow entrance that created a dark, crowded back area. They needed a high quality material, both functional and sustainable, so chose HI-MACS®, which apart from the previous properties, is also translucent, which made working with LED lighting possible.

Advanced Celebrates 20th Anniversary with installation on London Underground
The 100th fire alarm control panel, from global leaders in the design, manufacture and supply of intelligent fire systems, Advanced, has been installed on the London Underground.
The UK-based manufacturer is celebrating its 20th year in business with more than 60 Tube stations now protected by its industry-leading fire systems. The most complex installations are on the Jubilee line, where Stratford has six networked MxPro panels and Waterloo Tube station has five, while the deepest installation is at Hampstead, over 30 metres below ground level. The complexity of the systems differs from station to station, but all are fully integrated with sprinkler systems and have
a device to monitor the escalators, a location of particular importance in terms of fire safety. Many also have a repeater panel, which allows the fire system to be controlled and monitored from multiple locations within the station.
Approved to EN54 parts 2, 4 and 13, MxPro 5 panels can be used in single loop, single panel format or easily configured into high speed, 200 panel networks covering huge areas and tens of thousands of field devices. Advanced’s legendary ease of installation and configuration and wide peripheral range mean that MxPro is customisable to almost any application and it can be found in challenging and prestigious sites around the world.
