Manufacturers warn “economic lunacy” of No Deal Brexit must be avoided
Britain’s manufacturers are warning of the potential impact of ‘no deal’ economic lunacy as a survey shows that prospects for the sector are continuing to weaken as the uncertainty of Brexit drags on.
According to the Q2 Manufacturing Outlook survey published by Make UK, The Manufacturers’ Organisation and business advisory firm BDO LLP, domestic and export orders are continuing to trend down as the boost of artificial stockpiling unwinds, whilst growing evidence shows overseas customers are switching their supply chains away from the UK.
As a result, investment by the sector has been paralysed with no evidence that there is pent-up demand waiting to be unleashed and, whilst business confidence has held up with the relief of ‘no deal’ being avoided twice, it remains below the levels seen ahead of the EU referendum in 2016.
Key findings:
• Domestic and export orders continue to weaken
• Gap between output and orders increased
• Export orders remain at weakest levels since referendum
• Growing evidence of European customers abandoning UK supply chains
• Investment intentions paralysed
• Manufacturing forecast to grow just 0.2% in 2019, 0.8% in 2020.
Seamus Nevin, Chief Economist at Make UK, said: “Whilst the data at first glance makes for reassuring reading there is a clear weakening trend which, if it continues, would push some elements of industry over the edge before too long.
“Earlier this year there was clear evidence that industry was on steroids as companies stockpiled. Underneath, however, there is now growing evidence of European companies abandoning UK supply chains, whilst Asian customers balk at the unknown of what may exist as the UK leaves trade agreements which operate under EU rules.
“With this picture it would be the height of economic lunacy to take the UK out of the EU with no deal in place. The race to the bottom in the interests of party ideology has to stop otherwise there will be a heavy price to pay.”

Saint-Gobain PAM
Saint-Gobain PAM launches new rodding branches
Saint-Gobain PAM UK, leading iron solutions manufacturer has launched new rodding branches for its BS EN877 Ensign above ground drainage system. After working alongside installers, Saint-Gobain PAM identified an opportunity to significantly reduce installation time when installing horizontal pipework. This was particularly apparent in multi-storey developments with basement levels where the drainage systems can have many directional changes and multiple connections to vertical pipe stacks. Typically, this type of application would require several components to be assembled together; now with the new 100mm Ensign rodding branches available in 90° and 45°, the installation time of each directional change is reduced by at least 50%.

Imperial matches bricks for stunning restoration of Quarry Bank Mill
Imperial Bricks has supplied bricks for a new structure within the 18th century National Trust listed property at Quarry Bank Mill in Styal, Cheshire.
To keep the authentic look of the mill, it was essential that the new structure blended seamlessly into the old.
Imperial Bricks was approached to provide bricks for the new lift shaft to match the existing brickwork around the lift shaft area. Brick matching is a service offered by Imperial – if stock bricks can’t offer a close match, it’s possible to have a custom product created. The brick matching service will compare colour, size, texture and weathering to produce an exact match.
Imperial’s expert brick match team visited the site to record the colour and size of the old bricks. Jason Hughes, Managing Director comments: “After careful matching, 8,000 3” Reclamation Handmade bricks with a bespoke weathered finish were supplied. It’s a rustic red multi brick that’s particularly suited to old Cheshire buildings and has been a very popular choice for matching period properties across the North West.”
Imperial Bricks works closely with contractors, planners and conservation officers to ensure the most suitable bricks are used in heritage projects. It’s even possible to correct past mistakes; existing brickwork can be tinted to make sure the end result is right.

ARP’s Sentinel jointing system is quick, easy and mess free
ARP launches its next generation of rainwater fittings – with an improved snapfit jointing system.
Operating within the rainwater and roofline sectors that have traditionally been dominated by uPVC, the growth of aluminium as an alternative - being 100% recyclable, lightweight, corrosion resistant and durable has been consistently rising and is seen as part of the solution to impacts of both environment and climate change.
In 2011 ARP developed our successful Sentinel “snap-fit” jointing system for gutters, which was ground-breaking at the time – so, therefore, the development of the next generation of snap-fit fittings is something of which we are very proud and will give even greater benefit to the installer.
For Sentinel beaded half round gutter there is now an even simpler jointing system, where using a specified sealant within a designed union results in a speedy and secure fit with no mess on site and certainly no need for nuts, bolts or rivets.
ARP has also re-engineered the system to optimise its performance. With improved flow rates, defined die-cast fittings, which gives strength and a superior appearance to the internal welded joints, we believe it is the perfect fit for all types of property, large or small, traditional or contemporary.
With ‘on the shelf’ availability, an in-house paint line and a network of technical sales managers, now is a great time to invest in what ARP has to offer.

Schueco Jansen renovation window is the preferred solution
Janisol Arte 2.0, the second-generation renovation window from steel systems specialist Schueco Jansen, is proving popular with architects because of its enhanced specification, improved performance characteristics and ability to satisfy the aesthetic concerns of local authority planners and conservation officers.
Now being seen as the preferred solution for many refurbishment projects, especially those involving a listed building, elegantly ‘retro’ Janisol Arte 2.0 offers an enlarged range of profiles with slim sight-lines from 25 mm. A wider choice of glazing bead shapes – right-angled, bevelled, scotia and flat – makes it even easier to find an exact match for the steel windows being replaced.
Furthermore, since laser-welded profiles can now be added to standard Arte profiles, mullion spans can be significantly increased, so enabling the Janisol Arte 2.0 window to accommodate much larger areas of fenestration.
Available in all the opening types commonly encountered in both pre-
and post-war industrial buildings, maximum vent weights have increased to 150 kg thanks to the introduction of state-of-the-art, 3D adjustable stainless steel hinges.
Another benefit is that simpler fabrication techniques reduce manufacturing time by up to 85%, meaning that six and a half Janisol Arte 2.0 vents can be produced in the time it took to make a single vent in the previous system.
Special new foam profiles located between the glass and the frame mean that the insulation in the Janisol Arte 2.0 window has been significantly enhanced and following the introduction of insert profiles – which also speed up fabrication times – results in drainage that is even more reliable.
In addition, because all Janisol Arte 2.0 profiles now go through the latest ZF 100 galvannealed hot-dip process, corrosion resistance has been improved and processing weldability enhanced.
Finally, as well as standard premiumquality steel profiles, clients can opt for Janisol Arte 2.0 profiles in highgrade austenitic 1.4401 stainless steel or Corten steel, completing a specification that is thought to be unmatched by any other renovation window on the market.
For more information on Schueco Jansen’s Janisol Arte 2.0 renovation window, visit www.schueco.co.uk or email mkinfobox@schueco.com.

Ancon
Innovative Ancon rebar connectors used in iconic Russian skyscraper
Innovative and quick-to-install reinforcing bar couplers from Ancon replace time-consuming lapped joints and minimise reinforcement congestion in the gigantic concrete superstructure of Europe’s tallest building; the 87-floor, 462m high helicoidal Lakhta Tower in St. Petersburg. The use of Ancon’s high-performance mechanical rebar coupling systems also helped maintain build quality. By eliminating lapped joints and hooked bar ends, Ancon’s couplers and headed anchors allowed the wet concrete to flow more effectively through the reinforcement grid during casting. A total of 125,000 couplers, a combination of Ancon CXL threaded and MBT bolted systems, are installed in the tower’s immense 3.6m thick concrete foundation raft, where 32mm diameter reinforcement is arranged in 15 layers.

Ancon
Simple orientation mark enhances classic Ancon design
Ancon has made a simple improvement to one of its smallest, but most utilised, stainless steel building components to benefit installers of its masonry support systems. An orientation guide, in the form of two horizontal square ridges, has been incorporated into the design of the classic serrated washer that Ancon supplies with its masonry support brackets. The square ridges, added to the back of the washer, correspond to the line of the serrations on the opposite side that faces away from the user during installation. The new design makes it quicker and easier for installers to orientate the serrated washer correctly. Users do not need to view the serrated face before installing the washer.

Glidevale
Glidevale ground gas solution with Protect GDB10 Plus
Providing a continuous, impermeable protective barrier against ground gases including methane, radon, carbon dioxide and hydrocarbons, Protect GDB10 Plus membrane is suitable for Amber 1 and 2 applications as defined by NHBC. The product is compliant with BS 8485:2015+A1:2019 and has also been independently assessed and certified by BM TRADA.
The reinforced LDPE membrane with an aluminium core, has a mass of 195g/m² which is lower than most other gas membrane manufacturers making onsite mobility easy. Despite having a low mass, Protect GDB10 Plus’ tensile and puncture strength is far superior, ensuring minimal damage when fitting, which is part of BS 8485 Table 7’s Key Criteria. Each roll covers 120m² and has no folds, which guarantees concrete can be poured easily and effectively as there are no creases. With a larger roll there are less joints to tape, reducing the overall time to lay the membrane.
The full Glidevale gas protection system uses a high performance gas resistant tape manufactured from Protect GDB10 Plus, assuring consistency for joints. By using a taped system, the minimum thickness and mass example
stated in BS 8485, does not apply. Section C3 specifies the required thickness of a membrane is determined by whether it is welded at the joints, as it must provide sufficient protection and substrate.
Also required by BS 8485, both the membrane and the joint integrity have been independently methane permeability tested to BS ISO 15105-1. As one of the only products on the market with this testing for joints, contractors and housebuilders can have unwavering confidence in the product in creating a fully sealed system.
The company supplies a range of purpose designed, pre-formed accessories to maintain protection at wall cavities, corners, and services to remove the need to form difficult shapes on site. A range of underfloor and cavity wall ventilation accessories removes gases and moisture vapour where required, enabling regulatory requirements for ventilation to be met.

Roofshield chosen for multi-million pound transport hub
Roofshield, the unique vapour and air permeable pitched roof underlay has been chosen for a multi-million-pound project set to transform the transport links across Northern Ireland. The use of Roofshield can lead to savings in labour and material costs, due to no VCL being required, and its high-performance air permeability means that the roof space has similar air changes to that of a roof using traditional eaves/ridge ventilation. Many vapour and air permeable underlays use an airtight VP film layer to achieve their performance, whilst Roofshield’s patented SMS (Spunbond Meltblown Spunbond) structure allows high levels of airflow, in addition to the transport of moisture vapour, making the formation of condensation in the roof space virtually impossible. Slate provides a natural look that fits perfectly into the green landscape surrounding the resort. Two different systems were used to install the slate; hooks for the facade and screws for the roof.
From combining the installation methods, the roof looks very uniform in contrast with the subtle metallic details of the facade, fixed with stainless steel clips. There are 10 slate-clad triangular houses within the resort, which makes approximately 2900m2 of roofing and 1000m2 of cladding.

Gilberts Blackpool has now facilitated a fresh environment for shoppers at the latest Primark to open its doors - the Birmingham.
Gilberts worked with facilities management company Mitie to ensure air supply throughout the public and staff areas of five-storey, 161,000ft2 (14,957m2) new store.
Gilberts designed and developed a strategy to ensure appropriate air supply throughout the five floors, from basement upwards, addressing air circulation through the sales areas, toilets, staff rooms, training rooms, fitting rooms, cleaners’ stores and even the detention room, taking into account the impact of a two-storey atrium and mezzanines around it, and air flow to the support plant.
A combination of GSFA swirl diffusers, DG4 ceiling diffusers, GX extract valves, GSL linear slot diffusers and transfer grilles provide air supply internally, complimented by smoke louvres within the atrium, and WGF38 external louvres on the façade from first floor upwards servicing the plant rooms.

OMNIE
OMNIE UFH optimises air-source heat pump
The compatibility of OMNIE underfloor heating systems with renewable heating technologies has been underlined through the use of the Staple and TorFloor options throughout a large two-storey self-build property in South Cambridgeshire, ready to connect up to an air source heat pump.
Used throughout the upper storey, TorFloor provides particularly high efficiency because of its integral heat emitter and the position of the 12mm diameter pipe loops being in close proximity to the covering of thin plywood and chosen floor finishes. In combination with a well-insulated building envelope, this also means that the heat pump can be set up to run for longer periods at low output, rather than repeatedly cycling.

Always worth a few minutes of your time
Mitsubishi Electric do try to do things differently. An innovative manufacturer of heat pumps, air conditioning, chillers and ventilation systems, they also realise that there is more to selling than simply saying ‘mine is the biggest, the best, the newest, etc’.
People want to be informed. They want to be entertained. If they are going to invest their time in reading something, they need to feel that it was worth the effort. And that is the idea behind Mitsubishi Electric’s blog site, called The Hub. https://les.mitsubishielectric.co.uk/the-hub
“We post four new items each week covering a diverse range of issues all related to the built environment, climate change, reducing energy use, and other topical issues,” explains Russell Jones who curates the site for the company.
There are articles on Wellbeing, air quality and sustainability, alongside others focusing on new refrigerants such as R32 and innovative technologies such as Hybrid VRF air conditioning.
The site includes forthright views from independent contributors such as architect and TV presenter, George Clarke, who has railed against the housebuilding industry and the lack of good quality housing in the UK.
There are also pieces from editors of building services, plumbing, facilities management, specification and social housing magazines, alongside articles from economists and general advice on marketing and social selling.
The company’s own experts chip in as well, with advice on training or pieces on how sectors such as the chiller market is changing with the introduction of inverter-driven, modular units.
And there are heat pumps too of course, with several pieces from George Clarke, who has just had one fitted to his own home.
More general topics covered include legislation such as MEES and F-Gas, EPC Reports and the Paris Climate Change Agreement.
And the site also looks at current trends so this has seen articles on Game of Thrones, Greta Thunberg and the climate strikes, compostable coffee pods and even lessons we can all learn from reading Dr Seuss to our children – all of them relating back to energy use in the built environment and reducing the impact of modern life on the planet.

Ahmarra
Successful smoke testing achieved for Ahmarra
timber fire doors
Ahmarra have recently invested in smoke testing for our certified fire doors at Warringtonfire test centre in High Wycombe, with excellent results. A number of smoke seal options were tested and achieved smoke leakage results as low as 1m3/m/hr leakage rate, which is well under the threshold of 3m3/m/hr. This was achieved when testing the most onerous door configuration of a double doorset with lock and 4 hinges, which makes the results even more impressive. “This smoke test gives our customers further reassurance that our products are more than capable of meeting the requirements for both smoke and fire certification - and are genuinely ‘Tried and Tested’,” commented Tim Doran, Ahmarra’s Managing Director.

Flowcrete
What’s the right floor for you?
Choosing the right floor for a food and beverage (F&B) facility is a tricky task, as it will have to withstand a long list of challenging onsite conditions while consistently maintaining a clean and hygienic environment. The two most common types of floors specified in the F&B industry - methyl methacrylate quartz (MMA) and polyurethane (PU). Knowing when to apply an MMA quartz or PU requires understanding the floor’s properties as well as what chemicals, impacts, traffic, temperatures and cleaning it will encounter.
Whether it’s PU or MMA quartz, relies on the specific requirements of each F&B plant and can even change quite drastically from one part of a room to another.

Baldwin Boxall
Baldwin Boxall leads the way to safety with VIGIL
Voice alarm and life safety expert, Baldwin Boxall, is presenting its next generation EN54-certified voice alarm system, VIGIL3, at Firex 2019. Built on a fault-tolerant Ethernet backbone that requires no Ethernet switches, VIGIL3 is entirely modular for complete scalability. Rather than a centralised voice alarm router, inputs and outputs are now delivered via modules – inputs in blocks of two or four, and outputs in blocks of eight – which can easily be distributed across a project; enabling systems to grow with customers’ needs up to a maximum of 400 inputs and 800 outputs. The new, self-powered VIGIL3 amplifier models are now an amazing 66% lighter and considerably more compact than their predecessors.
