If anything will provide a clear snapshot about the overall health of an industry then sales activity tends to be a useful barometer.
Activity in the construction products manufacturing sector was reported to have weakened in the second quarter of 2019, with heavy side manufacturers reporting a fall in sales and a slowdown in hiring during the quarter.
The Construction Products Association’s State of Trade Survey for 2019 Q2 reveals that 6% of heavy side manufacturers, on balance, reported a fall in sales compared to Q1. Among light side manufacturers, a balance of only 9% reported that sales increased. Survey balances for annual growth in product sales were also markedly weaker for all manufacturers.
Looking forward to the rest of the year, both heavy side and light side manufacturers reported that they anticipate sales to increase, although for the heavy side, the balance of 27% was the lowest in two years. In addition, heavy side hiring was at a six-year low in Q2, suggesting the industry is adopting a cautious approach as we enter a period with a new Prime Minister and rising uncertainty over Brexit.
Q1, a more concerning slowdown in the volumes of work on the ground,
a combination of both.
“Nevertheless, manufacturers have sounded a note of cautious optimism and anticipate that sales will continue to grow over the next 12 months. However, over two-thirds of firms highlighted demand as the key constraint on future activity and hiring looks to have taken a back seat.
“Demand in the commercial, industrial factories and housing RM&I sectors has already started the year on a loose footing, meaning there’s a lot resting on the housing and infrastructure sectors

Demand for high-performance acoustic solutions is growing as knowledge of the detrimental effects of noise becomes more widespread. Nigel Sill, Chairman of Enfield Speciality Doors, said: “We should think about noise reduction in a similar way to fire resistance and security, not assume that a standard spec can do the job. Any door manufacturer is capable of making acoustic doors that reduce sound by up to 35dB or even 38dB using standard door cores, but often a higher performance (eg 41dB) is required to significantly reduce internal noise (from interview rooms or school music rooms, for example) or external sound from traffic or aeroplane flight paths. Anything above 35dB is usually considered ‘specialist’.”

Two hundred modules of the VELUX Modular Skylight system were installed as part of an innovative lighting and ventilation strategy led by BAM Construction and AHR Architects for the Ministry of Defence’s new UK Hydrographic Office. Modularised and prefabricated, the modular skylights simplified a complex specification for natural daylight, first-class ventilation, and modern aesthetics in a central atrium area at the heart of the new development. As both the openable and fixed units of the VELUX Modular Skylights system appear visually identical, AHR Architects were able to adopt a more long-term approach to strategic ventilation. A larger degree of openable units were specified to improve the ventilation capacity of the building.

The new way to stop internal data breaches
One third (34%) of data breaches involve internal employees. However, ground-breaking glass technology can prevent leaks of sensitive commercial information, while maintaining a professional office interior, according to window security specialist Protective Film Solutions.
Modern office space is often open plan, with glass walls to give the illusion of space and an all-inclusive environment. However, this is problematic when sensitive financial, technical or legal information is presented to senior staff or board members. While frosted or coated glass blocks the view of specific meeting rooms, digital screens featuring sensitive data can often still be visible.
The answer lies in new Casper™ Cloaking Technology by Designtex, which provides digital screens with an innovative smart shield film without obscuring the glass. Already used by large American corporations, this state-of-the-art technology obscures the light transmitted by digital screens to outside view, meaning only those in the room can see the content on display.
Designed to work with most LED and OLED displays, Casper™ Cloaking Technology by Designtex selectively filters specific light oscillations to make the display appear as a black screen to outside viewers.
Linear patterns inspired by nature for the new HIMACS® Strato Collection
The brand new Strato Collection enhances the HI-MACS® colour range with brand new design possibilities: the marked linear patterns create geometry through its soft structure and subtle look. The skilful use of the new colour striations, vertically or horizontally, allow for great variation in each and every project. LG Hausys has taken inspiration from the linear patterns found in nature to create a collection composed of neutral hues and natural designs, combined with the latest generation solid surface material features. HI-MACS® is completely non-porous, can be thermoformed into curved shapes, allows for seamless surfaces and is easy to repair and to maintain. The Strato Collection is available in three colours: Strato Cloud; Strato Wind and Strato Slate.

Chris Gould, Commercial Director at Protective Films Solutions, the exclusive distributor of Casper™ Cloaking Technology for EMEA, says: “Casper allows senior teams to discuss and display confidential information without causing suspicion among staff through inconvenient alternatives such as off-site meetings or covered up boardrooms.
“And, as co-working spaces become increasingly popular, the open visibility of screen technology including TVs, computers and laptops, is an important factor to consider. Casper is the only solution that means offices can keep their open-plan look and feel without compromising security.”

First of its kind liquid roofing and waterproofing system turns 20 KEMPEROL 2K-PUR, which is manufactured by Kemper System, has retained its unique market position over the last two decades. It remains the only cold liquid-applied wet-on-wet waterproofing product in the UK which is sustainably sourced, solvent-free and completely odourless. Manufactured using an 80 per cent castoroil formula derived from sustainable sources, the liquid system bonds directly to the substrate forming a seamless, elastomeric waterproof membrane that cannot delaminate and is UV stable. Kemperol 2K-PUR is applied using a reinforcement fleece, which has recently been upgraded. The new fleece is perforated as part of the production process rather than needle punched post manufacture easing application of the resin. 30 Kingsland Grange, Woolston, Warrington, Cheshire, WA1 4RW

A modern asymmetric façade design with natural slate & CUPACLAD Design
OFFSET is the 7th CUPACLAD® Design concept by CUPA PIZARRAS. Every year, CUPA PIZARRAS launches new innovative concepts for designing slate rainscreen claddings. A source of inspiration to create one-of-a-kind slate rainscreen claddings. CUPACLAD® Design OFFSET stands out for its asymmetric pattern. It combines two asymmetric formats to create an irregular pattern. The designers took rustic stone facades as the source of inspiration for this new concept and they transformed it into a truly modern design. This new slate façade design uses the same screws as the CUPACLAD® 101 series of CUPA PIZARRAS. Each slate unit is fixed to an aluminium structure by two flathead screws which remain invisible when overlapping the slate units.

Marshalls supplies Indian sandstone to International Quarter London
International Quarter London (IQL) is an exciting new space in Stratford dubbed as London’s new destination for progressive business. Gustafson Porter + Bowman’s landscape design has created intrigue through the use of angular zones comprising of precision cut rhombus shaped Indian sandstone. Alternating sections of cream Laurel Bank and buff / brown Brownridge are intersected by bands of grey Thornlake, black granite and Stainless Steel strips. The remarkable diamond shaped sandstone had to be meticulously cut to maintain the crisp linear flow of the space. In contrast to the sharp angles of the laying pattern, the outer edges used to create the planted areas were softer, utilising rounded contours for a unique finish.

Hunter Douglas Architectural manufactures ceiling for prestigious Royal College of Pathologists HQ
One of Hunter Douglas Architectural’s dramatic Luxalon® ceilings has been used to dramatic effect in the new £15 million headquarters for the Royal College of Pathologists in London.
The international architectural products company was specified to manufacture 250m2 of its Luxalon® V100 screen ceilings in RAL 7080 for the office floor and exterior canopy, to create a seamless visual screen from the inside to the exterior.
The vertically installed panels were manufactured in different lengths, each of which was designed to ensure easy access to lighting, air conditioning and sprinkler systems.
The fixing clips on the external panels were fitted on the carriers between the panels, while the internal V system clips directly into the carrier, providing a secure locking system.
The V series is an increasingly popular choice for architects and interior designers seeking to maximise the original volume of the room, while visually reducing ceiling height. The ceiling
screens are engineered to define the ceiling plane and consist of vertically hung ‘floating’ panels.

‘Developments in residential flooring - Understanding the implications’ is a technical case study produced by the British Board of Agrément to help housing developers, specifiers and contractors better understand modern flooring options. Compiled by Sean Downey, a team manager in the BBA’s engineering department, the document discusses how increased thermal performance requirements and offsite construction have impacted the approach to floor construction, influencing the market towards precast concrete products (beam and block or precast floor elements). The BBA has worked with suppliers and insurers to conduct full-scale load tests to develop, prove, refine and certificate those systems with components that satisfactorily work as a system and are manufactured to the highest standard.

Four Kingdom Street, an office and retail development in London, saw GEZE UK work with its German parent company to adapt its TSA 325 NT manual revolving doors to produce two, three-leafed, glass-topped entrances with extra height.
The doors are 3.5m high compared to the standard 3m and were installed within the line of the building to provide a flush frontage. Inside, the leaves of the revolving doors are powder coated matching the façade and echoing the engineering/ transportation elements of the design concept – a subtle nod to the heritage of the site - a former railway goods yard. Between the revolving doors is a pass door powered by GEZE’s Powerturn swing door operator.
