FRSL New Class A1 Pedestals ENQUIRY

The first construction products in the UK to achieve verification with the Code for Construction Product Information (CCPI) were highlighted at a celebration event in Central London.

A variety of manufactured construction products, materials and systems achieved CCPI verification.

These will become the first products on the market to carry the CCPI mark, helping to give confidence to product users that the product information for these products is clear, accurate, accessible, up-to-date, and unambiguous.

Dame Judith Hackitt’s Independent Review into Building Safety stimulated the development of the CCPI scheme to help drive improved product information management. Dame Judith joined the event and addressed manufacturers engaging in the process to mark their journey with CCPI towards verification of their products sets and welcomed those already achieving product sets verified against the Code.

To build on the first verified product sets announced, more product sets are already in the verification pipeline and progressing well with expectation to come through the process and onto the market over the coming weeks and months.

The CCPI is playing a pivotal role in driving up standards in product information as the construction industry adapts to

a new and improved building safety regime post-Grenfell.

Amanda Long, CCPI Chief Executive O cer, said: “The CCPI assessment and verification is a robust process looking not just at the product set information for verification but also the company culture and management systems to support a high standard of product information management. We are delighted to confirm the first product sets qualifying for the CCPI Mark which will now begin to be seen in the market.

“I hope this will inspire more manufacturers to start their journey towards product information verification against the CCPI. Next, we will see the demand-side seeking out CCPI verified products as we roll out our Supporters O er and our Merchants and Distributors Code”.

Triton Systems waterproofs ICF sub-structure

Products from the range of Triton Systems have been used to waterproof a semi-buried single storey extension to an old listed farmhouse near Uckfield in Essex, with the specialist sub-contractor involved being a long-term customer of the manufacturer for its work across the South-East. The current contract, which is being project managed by the property owner, features the use of Insulated Concrete Formwork (ICF) to construct the 30 metre long curving walls which have then been protected by Archer Specialist Treatments, using Triton’s EX100 membrane and Double Drain barrier to direct groundwater into a land drain around the base. Triton fillet was also used at the floor/wall junction to prevent moisture penetrating the joint. Triton Systems offers a wide range of well proven products to cover damp-proofing problems. Howells Patent Glazing

Rooflights light up Blossomfield Park development

Howells Patent Glazing has supplied and installed new glazed roof products for Blossomfield Park, an exclusive development of one, two, and three bedroom apartments. The development is made up of contemporary new buildings and a thoughtful conversion of the Grade II listed Tudor Grange with outbuildings. Using its 40mm HG2 glazing bar, Howells replaced the old steel lead clothed glazing bars and single glazed Georgian wired cast glass in three areas of the Grange. Elsewhere, a daylighting solution was also required for the new buildings. For this, Howells used its 57mm self-supporting ridge glazing system in Anthracite Grey, plus two pairs of automatic opening smoke vents. Two internal glazed gable windows were also supplied.

CUPA PIZARRAS

Striking solution in a conservation area

CUPA 12 natural slate has been specified for the roof of a new family home, built in the garden of a historic Grade II listed Arts and Crafts property in North London. The use of CUPA PIZARRAS products helped to satisfy stringent planning restrictions, which require new buildings to utilise traditional materials and ensure modern designs are in keeping with the surrounding architecture. CUPA 12 slate provided the perfect balance: being a natural and historically appropriate material that could also provide a clean aesthetic with a smooth, uniform finish. This – combined with the steep pitch of the roof, overhanging eaves and series of intersecting gables – helped to make the roof of the property a defining feature. This is consistent with traditional Arts and Crafts design.

University of Bristol Dental School relies on Saniflo

Saniflo UK is providing two 610 Sanifos lifting stations and a Sanivite grey water pump to a new, state-of-the-art dental school in Bristol.

The first of the Sanifos 610 lifting stations takes the water from a 20,000-litre booster tank in an adjacent plant room during routine maintenance and cleaning.

The second Sanifos 610 is situated directly beneath the clinical rooms and takes waste from compressed air and suction drainage tools used by trainee dentists.

A third unit, a compact Sanivite+ grey water lifting station, was specified to take wastewater samples once per week from side stream filters that monitor the heating and chilling systems throughout the whole building.

Garador offers new generation side hinged doors

TROX diffuser addresses air movement problems of exposed ceilings

Exposed ceilings are a key feature in today’s architectural designs, but the absence of an adjacent ceiling surface involves air movement problems such as ‘dumping’ of cool air or ineffective heating in the occupied zone.

ENQUIRY 11

Garador has introduced a new sophisticated side-hinged garage door design that lifts this easy garage entrance style right into the future. These new precision engineered side-hinged garage doors are a long way from your typical barn door style entrance solutions, and feature a number of exciting new design ideas to enhance the usability and performance of the doors. Security is always key and this has been enhanced on these doors by hidden hinges and an upgraded 2-point shoot-bolt locking system. Other new features include door stays and weatherproof rubber seals built into the door frame plus an aluminium threshold at the foot of the door, all designed to ensure the British weather is kept outside.

Beko plc Appliance Partners unveil new energy-saving technologies

Beko plc Appliance Partners have unveiled the latest energy efficient appliance offerings in their Beko and Grundig ranges.

The company used the recent IFA 2023 trade fair in Berlin as an opportunity to showcase their brands’ latest technologies and emphasise the importance of innovation in the company’s overall strategy.

Highlighting the impact of collective action towards more sustainable communities, the company introduced during IFA 2023 the "positive domino effect" philosophy which drives Beko plc’s product strategy and technology innovation. The event culminated in the reveal of two new key technologies under the company’s global brands: EnergySpin by Beko and AI-Sense by Grundig.

By reinventing the conventional laundry process, Beko's EnergySpin technology helps to reduce a household’s energy consumption. Rather than relying heavily on heat to dissolve detergent and eliminate stains, EnergySpin technology releases the detergent upfront. It harnesses the power of faster-than-usual drum speeds to elevate the pace at which the detergent dissolves. Called 'EnergySpin’, these unique drum movements eliminate the need for excessive heat generation during the wash, resulting in up to 35% less energy consumption than conventional machines while maintaining high-quality cleaning performance.

AI powers Grundig's new AI-Sense washing machine technology, which automatically and intelligently identifies the fabric type, soil level, load weight, and rinse requirements to optimise detergent, energy, and water use.

The new RFD-V diffuser from TROX , which has been purpose-designed for use in free-hanging applications, addresses these challenges, providing more effective control of air movement and improving comfort conditions in spaces with exposed ceilings.

In a typical mixed air distribution system, Coanda effect is exploited to cause the air discharged from the diffuser to move across the ceiling. This throw distance along the ceiling gives the air a chance to slow down, to ensure it is delivered into the occupied zone at a reduced velocity to avoid occupancy discomfort.

This avoids draughts, or 'dumping' which would occur if the air enters the occupied zone too soon.

TROX has developed two products in recent years – the RFD-DX and Tellus diffusers – which address these issues. Many systems, however, need to both cool and heat. Heating is a particular challenge where diffusers are freehanging because, without a ceiling, there is nothing to prevent the warm air for exiting the diffuser and stratifying without providing any heat to the occupied zone.

Solutions utilising external electrical actuators can tackle the problem, but involve additional cost, wiring and technical complexity.

Port Said lighthouse dances with Slicedstone

Slicedstone, from bathroom specialist Marmox, has been used extensively to clad a new lighthouse in Port Said, replacing the deactivated original, which stood sentinel over the city at the northern end of the Suez Canal since its opening in 1869. Slicedstone was specified by Karim Gabr’s practice to enhance the lighthouse and its environs, being that it is a natural material produced from large stone slabs, with each veneer being unique in appearance. The lightweight sheets are backed with a 100% waterproof decoupling membrane, allowing them to be secured using cement based tile adhesive. Slicedstone’s large format means, of course when compared to traditional tiles, savings were made on the costs of fixings, grout and glue.

Marley

Marley brings together clay and solar for social housing re-roofing project

Denbighshire Council has become one of the first local authorities in the UK to pilot a new type of solar pitched roof system, with the aim of cutting maintenance costs and helping tenants reduce their energy bills.

The pioneering refurbishment scheme has seen Marley’s full roof system, combining its Acme Single Camber Clay Plain Tiles, together with integrated solar panels, installed on 110 homes. The council’s specification required a like-for-like replacement for the existing

clay roof tiles, but also required a pitched roof solution to minimise current maintenance costs, reducing the likelihood of future repairs and incorporating renewable solar technology to help tenants cut energy bills. Opting for a full roof system that combined Marley’s Acme Single Camber Clay Plain Tiles alongside its integrated solar PV solution, SolarTile®, Denbighshire Council also specified JB red battens, underlay, dry fix, fittings for the project, all of which have been backed up with a 15-year guarantee, together with ongoing access to technical support from Marley.

Kemper System Benefits of PMMA specification

The popularity for PMMA liquid waterproofing solutions –(Polymethyl Methacrylate) – has grown in recent years, but the technology isn’t a new concept. Victoria Ramwell, commercial manager at cold-applied liquid waterproofing specialist, Kemper System, explains that as well as quick curing, PMMA is durable, flexible and hard wearing. The cold-applied liquid resin cures rapidly even at temperatures around 0°C or lower, and is installed wet-on-wet. This means the polyester reinforcing fleece is first saturated with liquid resin, bonding the membrane to the substrate, with the surface layer then applied onto the bonding coat whilst still wet – therefore forming a single, seamless membrane of uniform thickness. PMMA is tough and robust, and can provide a sound waterproofing solution for decades.

6UD

system residential doors, SL52 capped curtain walling and GT55TB commercial entrance doors. The 70mm C70S system has the same slim 89mm sightlines as the 58BW window system, but also boasts class-leading wind (600Pa) and water tightness (1500Pa). It has Secured by Design accreditation and can accommodate 50mm acoustic glazing, making it a good choice for this type of noisy urban environment.

Senior Architectural Systems

New paint finish for aluminium fenestration systems

Senior Architectural Systems has invested in its in-house powder coating facility to offer its customers a more practical and costeffective alternative to anodised aluminium. Senior can now offer a new ultra matt powder paint coating from Akzo Nobel which offers the same visual appearance as anodised aluminium but with a more consistent finish, superior colour retention and enhanced durability. The new ultra matt finish can achieve the same aesthetic appeal of anodised aluminium but with better consistency, particularly between joints, and the extra advantage of allowing marks and scuffs to be repaired on site. It can offer enhanced durability, with up to five times more colour retention than standard coatings, and is competitively priced. The risk of delays to project timelines is also reduced as the complete powder coating process is managed by Senior in-house.

Net zero can’t happen without a focus on retrofit

Retrofitting is vital to achieving net zero because 80% of current buildings will still be here by the time we reach 2050. All these properties need heating and hot water yet everyone is expecting EPC B to become a legal requirement and so we really are seeing the end of gas looming. These buildings can readily transition to renewable heating improving their energy efficiency and performance, with commercial heat pumps available right now and dedicated, professional installers to get them fitted. So, commercial buildings can make a real and significant difference on the road to net zero, as Chris Newman our Zero Carbon Design Manager explains in a special webinar.
