Hunter Douglas ceiling adds architectural feature to school’s play area

A new London school’s high-rise play area includes a striking ceiling from Hunter Douglas, a leading global manufacturer of architectural products. Hunter Douglas was appointed by developer Telford Homes to manufacture and oversee the installation of a bespoke ceiling on the covered multi-use games area (MUGA) and informal play area on the school roof.The £106,000 ceiling comprises solid timber larch grill and was completed in 4-70-20-40 module. It is secured by premium quality sendzimir galvanised steel suspension rails and has a drop of hangers up to 1500mm, plus bird netting over the carrier system.

Further awards success for Ancon’s Teplo range

Ancon’s innovative Teplo range of low thermal conductivity wall ties has done it again, with the news that the new Teplo-BF has been shortlisted in the ‘Best Innovation in Insulation’ category of the 2016 Build It Awards.

The latest addition to the Teplo range, Teplo-BF, features the same ultra-low conductivity basalt fibre body as the original bar-shaped TeploTie, with specially moulded safety ends which make the new tie easier and safer to use and significantly enhanced mortar bond.

Teplo-BF offers an 80% increase in bond strength over the original TeploTie, making it particularly suitable for use with lime and other slow-drying mortars.

New ABUS BSI cylinder ranges

ABUS have introduced new TS007 BSI cylinder ranges tested to BSI Kitemark Scheme TS007:2014 1 Star and approved to British Standard BS EN1303, which can be suited to either customer specific Y14 & Z14 Euro Profiles, or available on an open ABUS House Z14 section.

The Y14 range features a curved key profile, reserved to customer specific special section, which has been proven uncopiable without an ABUS Y14 key blank, and thus customers with these Y14 sections can be guaranteed to have follow up key cutting business, now with the security of BSI.

The Z14 section features a flat 6 pin cylinder that needs no special key cutting tools, and this section is available both to existing special section customers and on an open ABUS House section, so ABUS customers can buy this new Z14 BSI range without any financial commitment to a bespoke section.

Available from stock in Euro Cylinder format in Brass and Nickel finish ABUS’ TS007 BSI range is suitable for use on PVCu, wood and composite doors. ABUS brings security and price stability

Since the Brexit result in June, from governments down there is international uncertainty concerning the UK’s future trading position.

Lead survey reveals lack of accreditation knowledge

Britain’s largest industry survey of its kind has exposed a lack of accreditation knowledge among those working with lead in the construction industry. This is one of the key takeaways from the UK-wide survey of more than 250 lead merchants and end users, commissioned by Midland Lead and conducted by Firebrand Insight. Of the 250 construction professionals surveyed – from roofing, timber and builders merchants, through to specialist lead roofing contractors, roofers and general builders – the results revealed that while some do have product awareness, confusion and misunderstanding around the differences between machine cast lead and rolled lead is widespread. High quality machine cast lead has a British Board of Agrément 86/1764 accreditation, while high quality rolled sheet has a British Standard 12588.

Harmer donates floor drains to help local apprentices

Harmer Building Drainage has donated stainless steel shower drains to training provider, CP Assessments, for demonstrations when teaching students how to install grated drainage into wet rooms.

“It’s always nice to give a little something back,” says Wayne Willmott, National Sales Manager for Harmer. “So when we were asked to supply some drainage products to help teach future contractors and installers, we were more than happy to contribute.”

Dow Building Solutions boosts XENERGY brand

Dow Building Solutions has enhanced its extruded polystyrene (XPS) roofing insulation brand XENERGY™, with the launch of a new product specifically designed for use on parapets and upstands.

XENERGY LG is designed to be installed on parapets and upstands and assists in addressing the issue of thermal bridging on flat roof constructions. It is designed to be used alongside XENERGY SL inverted roof insulation, which recently became the first XPS to attain a Green Guide Rating A+ by BRE Global.

XENERGY products benefit from a manufacturing process which uses CO2 as the blowing agent and adds infra-red blocking particles to scatter and reflect heat radiation within the foam board.

Laidlaw was asked to provide a balustrade that combined contemporary brushed stainless steel with warm walnut timber at a new apartment block on the corner of Shottery Rd and Evesham Lane, in Stratford-upon-Avon. The showpiece £16 million leisure and community centre at Ashington in Northumberland includes two stunning ceiling systems, manufactured by Hunter Douglas. The first – a visually striking 640m2 wood linear open ceiling – stretches across the entire entrance and main atrium. Finished in American red oak, it was made to 111mm module, with each plank measuring 92mm x 15mm. Hunter Douglas’ special demountable clips, which allow up to 50% demountability, were used, while the 19mm gaps between the linear wood panels are visually closed by an acoustic fleece to improve interior sound absorption. Hunter Douglas also manufactured and supplied expanded metal acoustic rafts beneath an exposed soffit in the gymnasium. Made to a 1000 x1000 module, they have regular edges to fit a standard 24mm ceiling grid and include the Hunter Douglas LS10 stretch metal pattern.

The latest phase of the Greater Manchester Metrolink tramway system will feature toughened architectural laminated coloured glass from specialist manufacturer Romag The glass has been specified as a key aesthetic component of the new St. Peter’s Square tram stop. More than 370m2 of 17.5mm thickness heat soaked laminated green-tinted glass, which has been drilled and shaped by Romag for the city centre scheme, will form four eye-catching canopies for passengers sheltering from the elements on two newly built platforms. REHAU achieves ISO 50001 energy management certificate

REHAU has achieved the ISO 50001 Energy Management Certificate for all of its UK manufacturing and warehousing facilities. This is a key element in the fenestration and renewables specialist’s ambitious energy policy which is focused both on reducing energy losses and using and producing energy efficiently. It extends not just to the company’s manufacturing processes but to the design and application of REHAU’s products and to its buildings, infrastructure, purchasing policies, machinery and energy. REHAU has long stated its commitment to continual improvement in terms of its environmental performance and has already in 2016 announced a switch to sourcing 100% renewable electricity.

Best thing since sliced bread for flour mill restoration

A historic flour mill in Ramsgate has been transformed into luxury apartments with Crittall windows meeting the strict requirements of local planners. “We specified Crittall windows because the original building had steel casements and we wanted to upgrade to something that was in keeping with this and modern living in respect of energy conservation and acoustic requirements,” says Chris Chambers from architects GPM2 Design. “We had long discussions with the planning authority who were resistant to the inclusion of double glazing. We put the case for the W20 window from Crittall showing there could be a much better performance without damaging the fabric of the building.”

Lindapter

Lindapter provided connection solutions for Arup’s Circular Economy Building

The construction industry currently produces three times more waste than all UK households combined, including 60 tonnes of materials that go straight to the tip due to incorrect ordering, damage or not fitting correctly.

Lindapter and many other collaborators pulled together, generously giving their time, products and services to support Arup’s project, which tested the maturity of circular economy thinking in order to prove that circularity is achievable.

The prototype challenged both designers and suppliers to think differently about their chosen materials and construction processes in order to create a building where, at the end of its life, all of its elements can be re-used, re-manufactured or recycled. True circularity has only been possible with the support of manufacturers such as Lindapter who are committed to testing the principles that underpin the circular economy.

During the project, Arup asked Lindapter to design and supply a connection system to secure the circular building’s roof panels, wall panels and glazing supports to the structural frame. Lindapter’s technical team quickly designed bespoke connection solutions using the CE Marked Type B clamp, which allowed contractors to rapidly install the panels by easily sliding and aligning the eco-boards into position before tightening with a standard torque wrench.

As only hand tools are required to install Lindapter products, noise, waste, and tool/welding consumables are avoided. Lindapter clamps allow onsite adjustability and adaptability to suit different beam thicknesses and angle alignment to ensure a guaranteed fit, therefore minimising site waste or returned construction components.

The connection solutions were particularly appropriate for the circular buildings project due to Lindapter’s synergy with the principles of the circular economy, for example, Lindapter’s products provide flexibility, ease of deconstruction and the potential to reuse or recycle.

Sika arrests leaks at Paisley Police Divisional HQ

Sika Liquid Plastics’ Decothane cold applied liquid membrane has been used to overlay a 1,000m2 police custody suite at Paisley Police’s divisional headquarters. Originally constructed in 1964 as part of a mixed development that includes the police headquarters, Renfrewshire Council offices and the District Court, the singlestorey building contains police cells and accommodation for officers. The building was partially overlaid using Sika’s Decothane liquid system when polyurethane membranes were in their infancy 30 years ago, and the previous Decothane surface was still intact. However, two thirds of the roof still had an asphalt surface and, as this was failing, the decision was taken to overlay the entire 1,000m2 roof with Decothane 20-year single point guarantee system in slate grey.

Metalline specified on iconic office refurbishment

Metalline glazed in Ultima insulated panels have provided the finishing touch to the external façade of a dilapidated 1970’s office block refurbished into a ‘BREEAM Excellent’ council offices in Eastleigh, Hampshire. The exterior façade featured a range of horizontal, corner and vertical Ultima sandwich panels glazed in on all four sides to a Kawneer structural glazed system. Each of the 50 vertical panels were manufactured by Metalline in aluminium in 3150 mm lengths and joined together to form an impressive 6300mm long aspect. Metalline’s Ultima insulated panels possess excellent acoustic, thermal and fire performance ratings. The panels can also be glazed into a standard curtain walling or, as at Eastleigh, a structural glazing system.

Column casings for new hall at Yorkshire Event Centre

Contour recently designed, manufactured and installed a series of elliptical column casings at the Centre’s new purpose built hall. The casings house structural columns composed of Circular Hollow Sections (CHS) and are nearly 8m tall. The CHS required encasement not only for aesthetic purposes but also to protect drainage pipework. The design team at Contour liaised extensively with the main contractors and architects to develop a bespoke frame system. This could be fixed around the CHS columns and to which the casings could be securely attached, without affecting the integrity of the CHS. The casings for each column were manufactured in 3 sections and internal butt straps ensured that the sections aligned correctly. Internal collars were installed on each column casing, with a 6mm thick acoustic foam applied internally to minimise any potential wind generated reverberation.

The building had been suffering from water ingress from the roof for a number of years which had gradually worsened over time. Remmers Kiesol was used as an injection agent to remedy the damp in the brickwork and is ideal for fair-faced masonry with high moisture penetration. Scarles Yard comprises a purpose built multi storey car park of concrete frame construction with ancillary integrated warehouse/workshop units located along its frontage.

With three levels, the car park provides 823 spaces for Aviva employees during the working week and is open for public use on Saturdays and Bank Holidays for a flat daily charge, being particularly popular when Norwich City FC play at home.

The top level of the car park is drained with 453 metres of Hauraton RECYFIX® PRO 100 - Type 75 channels in various run lengths. The channels are fitted with FIBRETEC® HEELSAFE 9mm slot gratings with a loading Class of C250. Made from PA-GF, the FIBRETEC® grating will not rust and has a slot configuration specifically designed by Hauraton R & D engineers to enhance the flow of water into the channel. The slots are super smooth, elliptical openings with the moulded bars having slightly raised triangular bosses along their outside edges. This configuration also helps eliminate any cross-flow over the grating and important consideration for this project.

The RECYFIX® channel component is made from 100% recycled polypropylene (PP) and has an intake cross section of 372 cm2 The FIBRETEC® grating are factory fitted on all channels.
