Welcome
Manufacturers urged to support campaign on responsible and ethical sourcing
Improving the image of the construction industry takes many forms and includes a multitude of initiatives.
As the industry looks to an uncertain future and the prospect of major overhaul as a result of the Grenfell Tower fire inquiries and Brexit, manufacturers are being urged to support one of the latest projects.
APRES – a network of industry and academic partners committed to embedding the responsible and ethical sourcing of materials, products and services into the construction industry - has published a best practice white paper.
Aimed at construction clients, contractors, manufactures and professional bodies, the paper includes an Eight Pathways to Best Practice model which is designed to take an organisation through from baseline levels of performance on responsible and ethical sourcing, towards best in class.
It looks at the critical areas of operation in a business: from initial policymaking, via compliance, right through to PR.
“The Apres Eight Pathways Model is about giving organisations the framework for turning good intentions into positive actions,” says Shamir
Ghumra, Director Sustainable Products at BRE.
“Modern-day businesses operating in the construction sector are dealing with supply chains that are not only long and global, but also complex in nature. This can expose them to reputational risk and commercial threat.
“While progress has been made by the industry in tackling sourcing issues associated with the environment it is the ethical dimension –particularly modern slavery and enforced labour issues - which are presenting fresh challenges. APRES’s mission is to help the industry address this.”
It is an initiative that deserves support even at a time when priorities might be focused elsewhere.

Sherwin-Williams offers a clear solution
Barely a day goes by when Brexit is not in the headlines. The outcome remains far from certain for food and drink businesses facing threats of increased food costs and lowering of safety standards as decades of EU regulation are unpicked. Against this uncertain backdrop Sherwin-Williams is talking to customers about how resin flooring – as part of a proactive tightening of supply chain activity – can steady the impact by providing a hygienic flooring solution just when it’s needed. The Hilton London Bankside kitchens (pictured) are just one example. They took full advantage of RSL’s Resuthane™ system securing a super hygienic floor with excellent impact, spill and slip resistance to last at least a decade. It is reassuring to know that a decision for resin now is one less thing to worry about in the future.

Saint-Gobain PAM – better BIM data from collaboration
Accurate BIM libraries will only be possible through collaboration according to SaintGobain PAM who has redeveloped its own for cast iron sanitary, soil and rainwater systems following collaboration with Hoare Lea. Says Matthew Hassall, BIM Implementation Manager for Saint-Gobain PAM: “It is now 12 months since BIM has
had to be implemented on public sector projects and as a result industry is learning exactly what it wants from a library of products and systems. And the only way of achieving this is to collaborate with the supply chain and ask it what it needs and equally as important what is not required.”
The Ultimetal fabric with the high levels of solar refl ectance and low levels of emissivity a orded by its metallised coating provide industry leading levels of shading performance. The 50+ years’ experience of weaving glass-fi bre based shading fabrics producing the highest levels of performance from the thinnest of materials. The Ultimetal fabric is less than one quarter of a millimetre thick, permitting a blind of over 3.0 metres in height to be stored in a cassette of less than 55mm square. Powder coated to match the window frames, the blinds become almost invisible.
Light transmission levels for the fabric in single figures can remove glare, improving workspaces and comfort zones alike. Solar reflectance (Rs) of over 70% can reduce heat gain through the glass by 25%, 40% to over 50% dependant on glass properties. The blinds also improve the insulation of the window by 15%, 20%, 30% or more, reducing temperature loss.

Proving Permeable Paving External Works & Drainage
The trade association Interpave has just launched a new case study showing how concrete block permeable paving provides a comprehensive sustainable drainage system (SuDS) for a new housing development without additional land-take.
Fleetwood Crescent is the 28-home first phase of a new development in the Eastfield Area of Peterborough for award-winning housing association Cross Keys Homes. It makes extensive use of concrete block permeable paving, reflecting Peterborough City Council’s desire to incorporate SuDS in developments. The estate road is a trial site for the adoption of permeable paving by the Local Highway Authority and will be adopted under the ‘Section 38’ process, and its performance monitored.
Storing rainwater on site
The 0.87ha brownfield site – formerly a secondary school – has 0.8m depth of made-up ground with underlying clay and sand, giving a low permeability. The drainage is designed to temporarily store rainwater runoff on site and remove pollutants before gradual discharge to an existing surface water sewer that eventually outfalls into a nearby watercourse.
The adopted estate road is ‘System C’ concrete block permeable paving with an impermeable membrane effectively forming a tank, due to the low soil permeability. A perforated pipe collects water, running the length of the road and connecting to the sewer. Here, water discharge from the development via the permeable paving is restricted to ‘greenfield’ runoff rates by an orifice plate flow control chamber. Surface water storage volumes on the site are designed to cater for rainfall events exceeding the 1 in 100 year storm plus 30% allowance for climate change.
Un-adopted driveways next to dwellings and shared parking areas are also constructed in concrete
block permeable paving, linked to the permeable road construction with pipes below the footpath. Rainwater from all roofs drains into the adjacent driveway permeable paving via perforated diffuser pipes. Services are generally accommodated in ‘corridors’ within the footpaths, with an impermeable block paved road crossing.
Interpave Technical Guidance
All the concrete block permeable paving has been designed and constructed in accordance with Interpave technical guidance (available from www.paving.org.uk). This scheme demonstrates how concrete block permeable paved drives, parking and adopted roads on a typical new housing development can attenuate, store and treat runoff from all the hard surfaces without any additional land-take or other SuDS features. Addition of a simple orifice plate flow control protects the local sewer from overloading.
By its very nature, concrete block permeable paving is uniquely placed to help meet requirements for SuDS on developments. Of course, hard surfaces are necessary on housing schemes anyway – whether for traffic, parking, pedestrians or play. But permeable paving also provides an inherent drainage system, addressing both flooding and pollution issues by attenuating and cleaning water runoff at source. This technology largely eliminates pipework, gulleys and manholes, and should cost less than conventional drainage. Concrete block permeable paving can simply infiltrate to the ground where conditions allow or collect water for transmission to other SuDS features along the ‘management
train’ or to conventional drainage, as here.
Predictable and Reliable
Following some 25 years use in the UK and abroad, concrete block permeable paving has proved to be a predictable, reliable and low-cost SuDS technique. Its capability to attenuate water flow during rainfall for gradual discharge is well known. But this principle is optimised for greater cost efficiency by considering distinct storage ‘compartments’ of permeable paving using straightforward flow control devices with an orifice – accurately sized and accessible for observation or adjustment if needed – on the outlet.
This technique enables water storage to be strategically deployed around a development within compartments, each with a flow control demonstrating compliance to local authorities as part of the SuDS design approval process. Guidance on SuDS and concrete block permeable paving can be downloaded via: www.paving.org.uk. A video dramatically demonstrating the performance of permeable paving on this scheme is available via the website.

Roofshield chosen for golf centre extension at Carnoustie
Roofshield, the unique vapour and air permeable pitched roof underlay has been chosen as part of a new extension at Carnoustie Golf Links. For more than 21 years the Roofshield name has been synonymous with the highest quality, providing a pitched roof underlay, which is both air and vapour permeable. Many vapour and air permeable underlays use an airtight VP film layer to achieve their performance, whilst Roofshield’s patented SMS (Spunbond Meltblown Spunbond) structure allows high levels of airflow, in addition to the transport of moisture vapour, making the formation of condensation in the roof space virtually impossible. It has an extremely high degree of vapour permeability, as well as air permeability, so will still perform in conditions in which air tight alternatives will not.

Doors, Windows, Glass & Fire Protection
Louvre Windows bring light, air and nature into Health and Care Centre
Ninety-four Fieger louvre windows installed at the Banbridge Health and Care Centre allow natural light and ventilation to permeate the building and provide visual connection with landscaped courtyards and gardens. The building has been recognised by RIBA with national and regional awards for its innovative design that engages with the surrounding landscape.
Architects Kennedy FitzGerald in association with Avanti Architects faced a challenging brief which required the new centre to provide facilities for community outpatients clinics, daycare accommodation for adults with disabilities and administrative offices for the Southern Health and Social Care Trust, all under one roof.
The new centre is constructed on the site of the old Banbridge Hospital and Workhouse. Enabling works were required to clear the site of existing buildings and contamination. Significant level changes across the site were viewed as an exciting opportunity to realise the brief by stepping the accommodation.
Giving good levels of natural light, the Fieger louvre windows ensure high visibility, creating a strong connection between interior and exterior. Though allowing ventilation, the windows also promote energy conservation. Being double glazed units achieve a U value of 2.1 to 2.3 W/m²K and have a certified air infiltration rate of 0.4 m³/hour/m², so that heat is conserved during winter months.
The ventilated louvres use Cool-Lite SKN165 glazing from Saint-Gobain, delivering a 65 per cent reduction in solar heat gain. Electrical actuation of the louvres, by compact D&H linear motors, built unobtrusively into the side frames, is operated under the control of the building management system for automated comfort setting.
Motors have anti-trap protection to reverse movement if resistance is sensed on closure. The aluminium framed louvre units are incorporated
within the curtain wall structure and have a matching finish.
Upper and lower levels of the building each have a central landscaped courtyard. Community treatment facilities and Trust offices are located on the upper tier, closer to the town, with adult daycare on the lower, more
secluded, tier. High quality landscaping throughout enhances the site with the higher level overlooking a green roof to the lower tier. The complex serves the needs of the town of Banbridge and the wider community of 48,000 people in County Down.

Forbo Flooring Systems
Tessera In-touch – for more relaxed workspaces
Inspired by natural craft textiles and artisan weaves, Forbo has launched Tessera In-touch, a softly striated carpet tile collection designed to help ‘de-formalise’ office interiors and create more relaxed and calming working environments. The In-touch collection features ten planks, with hues that diffuse along their width. Whilst any of the colourways can be used alone, each plank is part of pair, having three of their four yarn colours in common. Paired colours flow easily into each other to deliver tonal or contrasting flows across the floor, achieving relaxing interior spaces. The plank format allows for further designs to be created such as herringbone or ‘half drop’. The contemporary colour palette includes on-trend hues from mustard, blush and grey to duck egg blue.

Gilberts
Fusing the options
Ventilation design and specification for multi-occupancy buildings is now as simple as A,B,C through an innovative approach pioneered by Gilberts. It has developed a stock, single-unit hybrid solution focussed on natural ventilation with heat recovery - its Mistrale Fusion System (MFS). The company’s pioneering approach has continued, with the evolution of the system that now enables simple addition of extra elements. Thus, the core MFS is manufactured as a standard product, with ‘add-on’ items to meet the varying specifications of each project.
Elements such as heating coils, filters, silencers, duct connection outlets and louvre transformation, plus a range of air volumes for warm up or purge ventilation, to supplement the standard airflow rates, ensure the MFS brings a comprehensive hybrid solution to the extensive, variable building demands for ventilation.
