Industry warns of damaging double whammy from No Deal

Britain’s manufacturers have warned that some of the UK’s most economically deprived regions are at risk of a double whammy hit to their economies in the event of a ‘no deal’ Brexit in new analysis of regional manufacturing performance published by Make UK, the manufacturers’ organisation and business advisory firm BDO LLP.

According to the analysis Wales (almost two thirds), the North East and Yorkshire & Humber (both 60%) have a very high exposure to trade with the EU. Combined the critical contribution of manufacturing to the economy overall in Wales and the North East is way above average (17.5% and 15.2% respectively), the risks of ‘no deal’ are likely to be felt disproportionately by these areas in particular. The East Midlands is also not too dissimilar with manufacturing accounting for almost a fifth of its economy and the EU being its biggest market accounting for just over half its exports.

For the first time the analysis also shows a clear correlation between regional performance and exposure to industry sectors and global trends and structural change.

Commenting, Stephen Phipson, Chief Executive at Make UK, said: “Although Brexit stockpiling put manufacturing on steroids for a little while, the industry has since gone almost cold turkey and the overall picture over the last year now shows Brexit, global

trade wars and the economic downturn in major markets are menacing UK manufacturers.

“In particular, there are some regions of the UK with a very high exposure to trade with the EU and who are likely to su er a disproportionate double whammy to their economies and jobs from a damaging ‘no deal’ exit.

“Policymakers need to be on high alert to deal with the fallout from this to ensure manufacturers do not su er collateral impact as a result. This underlines why we strongly support calls for the Government to agree s deal with the EU which protects and supports British manufacturers.”

Thermoblock combats cold bridging for new leisure facilities

The construction of a new swimming pool and play park at a caravan and holiday lodge complex, set in a stunning location on the coast of Fife, is making full use of the unique insulating and load-carrying attributes offered by Marmox Thermoblocks. Pert Bruce Construction is also making use of the Marmox MSP 360 sealant as an adhesive to complete the stepped overlay joints between the individual Thermoblock units. The Thermoblocks are available in widths of 100, 140 or 215mm and are formed from sections of XPS (extruded polystyrene) encapsulating two rows of high strength, epoxy concrete mini-columns. These are attached at either end to the top and bottom layers of glass-fibre reinforced polymer concrete.

The creation of an ultra-modern Teaching Building as a new core to a long established school in Oxfordshire, has included the installation of custom designed and manufactured stainless steel sinks, worktops and splashbacks from GEC Anderson for several of the different technical spaces. The Birmingham office of ADP Architects has been responsible for the design work on this latest project, while Clegg Construction Ltd of Nottingham was the main contractor carrying out the work. Acting as a specialist sub-contractor, GEC Anderson conducted site visits and liaised with the project team in order to ensure its custom fabrications met the school’s health & safety as well as technical and teaching requirements.

Ultimate gas protection for vital new water pumping station

A water pumping station built to provide a vital back-up supply for Birmingham is being protected from an ingress of potentially deadly methane by Ultimate GeoSeal, the waterproofing and gas protection system from Visqueen.

The station at Lickhill near Kidderminster draws water from the River Severn which is then pumped over 16 miles to Frankley treatment works, south of the city.

James Walsh, Technical Support Manager for Visqueen, explained that coming up with a suitable gas protection and waterproofing solution for such a challenging scheme involved more than just specifying the right product. It also required a high level of technical knowledge and design expertise.

Visqueen Ultimate GeoSeal is a pre-applied membrane and for Lickhill it was used not only for its gas resistant properties but also for waterproofing, as the 16-metre deep main pumping station shaft passes through the water table, also known as the saturated zone.

The membrane was applied to the piles extending 18m below ground level and also to the 12-metre diameter base of the shaft.

Visqueen Ultimate VOC Blok, a flexible membrane suitable for brownfield applications which forms a barrier to volatile organic compounds and ground gases, was applied below the concrete slab and pre-cast planks of a number of support buildings.

Positioned at ground level, the specification for these buildings also required an under-slab ventilation system to exhaust and disburse to atmosphere any harmful gases present under the building. This was achieved with a full vent blanket using Visqueen Gas Vent Matting and Pro Gas Vent Boxes.

Kingspan brings eastern promise to the Olympic Park

The Kingspan OPTIM-R Balcony and Terrace System has been installed as part of the award-winning Here East development, a stunning repurposing of the press and broadcasting centres at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

A pedestal floor construction was chosen and to ensure the space below was effectively insulated, whilst also maintaining a level transition from the adjoining space, the Kingspan OPTIM-R Balcony and Terrace System was chosen.

Unlike conventional insulation materials, Kingspan OPTIM-R panels feature a vacuum insulation core with an innovative microporous structure. This design allows them to achieve a declared thermal conductivity of 0.007 W/m∙K – up to five times lower than commonly used insulation materials. Rigid insulation infill panels of the same thickness are also included within the system. These are fitted around the perimeter of the balcony and can also be cut to allow for penetrations through the insulation layer or to fill spaces between the Kingspan OPTIM-R vacuum insulation panels (VIPs).

Operatives from Kingspan Insulation’s OPTIM-R design service developed detailed system layouts for the three recessed balcony areas. Onsite, a vapour control and protective rubber crumb layer were first laid above the concrete deck - 25 and 30 mm Kingspan OPTIM-R panels were then laid above this in two layers followed by a 30 mm layer of Kingspan Styrozone.

Wood ceiling enhances natural surroundings of Aylesbury Vale Crematorium

A solid wood Hunter Douglas Architectural ceiling and external canopy was the natural choice for a modern, purpose-built crematorium, which nestles in a tranquil waterside setting.

Designed by architecture practice Stride Treglown Aylesbury Vale Crematorium, in Buckinghamshire, is a circular building that takes its design cues from the rural surroundings. The natural materials finish also enables it to blend seamlessly into its setting.

Hunter Douglas Architectural, a leader in solid wood interior and external ceilings, was specified to supply 85m2 solid wood linear open system in

European oak for the chapel as well as 530m2 of solid wood European pine for the exterior soffits. They were supplied 92mm wide by 15mm deep, and installed with a 19mm gap, which was visually closed by a black non-woven acoustic tissue.

The specially developed suspension system comprises carriers with pre-fixed clips, which retain the wooden panels. The panels also have a tongue and groove connection across their short edges, to create a seamless joint detail. Light fixtures, vents or speakers can be easily fixed into the ceiling.

Cottrell + Vermeulen Architecture has designed new, bright and airy postgraduate accommodation for Churchill College, Cambridge with interiors featuring Junckers’ solid maple flooring. The architects sought to recreate the warmth and brightness of the original college rooms from the 1960s and found Junckers maple flooring a good match. The choice of two-strip boards, where two staves of wood make up one floorboard, was also a reference to the narrow boards used in the original rooms.

The naturally pale tone of the maple floor is matched by joinery in birch faced plywood to form a comfortable and welcoming space, ready for students to move at the start of the new academic year.

A variety of Bostik subfloor preparation products have been specified for the redevelopment of Dunstable Leisure Centre and Library. Westcotes Flooring installed the building’s soft and sports flooring and to get the best possible results on the subfloors, it turned to Bostik. Saniflo UK’s technical team has advised KMD Cleaning & Laundry, based in the seaside town of Great Yarmouth, to install the Sanicom 2 - a large lifting station that pumps away grey water through small bore pipework. The Sanicom 2 can connect to three large machines at a time.

It takes the soapy water and pumps it up to the next floor, underneath a mezzanine floor. Then, it takes the water down into the existing waste pipes of a former WC, which discharges into mains drains at the front of the building. The Sanicom 2 features two pumps that operate alternately or together. A hardwired alarm provides early warning in the unlikely event of an issue.

New R32 VRF air conditioning provides complete solution

Mitsubishi Electric has launched new R32 VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) air conditioning systems to offer the UK market the first complete range of lower Global Warming Potential (GWP) solutions.

The R32 City Multi YNW range is available in both heat recovery and heat pump variants to deliver lower GWP for large air conditioning systems. For the first time in the UK, this allows customers to use one single lower GWP refrigerant across a complete building or an entire network.

“Under the growing pressure of the F-Gas phase down regulations, the market is demanding viable and positive solutions which are future proof for businesses and last the full lifecycle of the product,” explains Mark Grayston, Head of the Product Marketing Department.

At a customer conference this month, Mitsubishi Electric asked its partners what the key factors in the adoption of R32 VRF are and the top three responses were: 1) cost; 2) proven VRF concept; and 3) end user CSR. “Customers are looking for products that meet both current and future legislation and with the launch of the UK’s first R32 VRF systems, we are delighted to be able to offer the market a complete range of lower GWP solutions,” adds Grayston.

Mitsubishi Electric also announced a warranty extension at the conference for its top partners and will now offer 10-year warranties on all air conditioning equipment installed by its Diamond Quality Partners (DQPs).

“With R32 comes an increased need for quality in both application and installation,” adds Grayston. “Our DQPs are proven to meet the highest standards of installation, including subjecting themselves to an annual independent audit of their work, so we wanted to support their commitment with this extended warranty”.

R32 is now the norm for split-type air conditioning systems offering a lower GWP (675) than R410A (2088). Whilst Hybrid VRF has provided a viable R32 solution for larger systems, no standard VRF range using R32 has been available – until now.

Utilising the innovative and highly efficient City Multi YNW outdoor unit, this R32 solution offers complete design flexibility, high efficiency and low noise.

R32 makes up 50% of the existing R410A refrigerant already found in many current VRF systems, is highly energy efficient and is easy to recycle. A GWP of one third of R410A, plus reduced overall system refrigerant volumes means lower refrigerant total and lower global warming impact.

Available to specify from October, the new City Multi R32 models will be in stock from January 2020, offering sizes from 22kW to 34kW in both heat recovery and heat pump variants.

With a range of ducted and 4-way blow ceiling cassette indoor units available, the systems provide flexibility of installation for R32 VRF in many applications. They also work with the comprehensive range of advanced controllers to ensure effective and efficient operation.

“This new range enables us to offer a complete choice for any building and any customer,” comments Mark Grayston, “Whether CSR is high on the agenda for customers, or whether lifecycle cost or capital cost are more important, there is now a complete R32 choice available from Mitsubishi Electric.”
