Xtralite
Council team see the light
An historic building in the town of Matlock in Derbyshire has enjoyed a roof refurbishment which has enabled its staff to see the light – quite literally. County Hall in Matlock, built in 1853, forms part of the offices for Derbyshire County Council and its roof was in dire need of refurbishment to aid heat retention, light penetration, minimise reflection and return the building to a watertight state. The Grade II listed building required a sympathetic roof restoration and Xtralite was commissioned to provide a series of rooflights including a bespoke 18 metre glazed rooflight system that was subject to strict planning requirements to ensure the heritage of the building was preserved.

Bespoke design adds elegance to Hunter Douglas folding shutters
Motorised folding shutters manufactured by Hunter Douglas have provided deluxe private villas overlooking the Mediterranean Sea in Harsuf, near Tel Aviv, with a stunning visual effect as well as practical solar glare reduction.
The challenge for Hunter Douglas was to create a curved façade of motorised folding shutters that closed at 180 degrees and concealed the runners to ensure that a clean, flat uniform surface is created when the shutters are closed.
Hunter Douglas Folding Shutters are typically built in aluminium –although can come in any custom material – and have either fixed louvre fins or a perforated aluminium sheet panel. They are available in widths from 530-590mm and heights up to 3600mm.
Don’t set your watch…watch it set
There’s no need to guess when to start loading studs in masonry or concrete, because our latest fast curing range of mortar resins change colour (from blue to grey) as they set. So you’ll know at a glance.
Simpson Strong-Tie Sales Director Jon Head says “We’re pleased to announce our innovative range of mortar resins, which offer some great features to make the job simpler for builders. Our general purpose Poly-GP is ideal for solid or hollow block masonry, and our AT-HP high performance resin is approved for use in threaded rod and rebar concrete.”
Jon continues “Both mortars cure in as little as 20 minutes, and being styrene free, they doesn’t give off any nasty odour. What’s more each cartridge comes with 2 mixing nozzles - another breath of fresh air!”
A full range of tools and accessories is also available - including threaded rods, pumps, brushes and applicator guns. For more information visit www.strongtie.co.uk.
London borough fits new Aico multi-sensor
The London Borough of Harrow is fitting Aico’s latest alarm – the mains powered Multi-Sensor Fire Alarm, Ei2110e – into it domestic properties. Harrow is using the Ei2110e to upgrade its properties to at least a category LD2, Grade D standard. The properties will be fitted with the new Ei2110e in the main living room, landing and hallway, with a Heat Alarm in the kitchen. Further alarms will be installed on recommendation from the installers where additional risks have been highlighted. The Multi-Sensor Fire Alarm contains two sensor types, optical and heat, to constantly monitor smoke and heat levels, sending and receiving information via its intelligent detection software. This sensor information provides the best response to all fire types and reduces potential false alarms.
Sika’s concrete repair system proves vital
The Grade II-listed Victorian Poplar Baths building in London has been transformed into a state-of-the-art leisure centre, with global product supplier Sika providing the anti-corrosive concrete repair system to
ensure the safe conversion and long-term conservation of the historic structure.
During initial repairs all surfaces, including the roof’s striking whalebone structure, were rendered using Sika MonoTop-610, a high-performance, one-component, cementitious polymer-modified primer.
For further reassurance, Sika Galvashield galvanic, sacrificial anodes were installed to prevent the formation of new corrosion sites adjacent to refurbished concrete areas. Sika MonoTop-620 was then applied to create a cementitious smoothing coat to the repair mortar
Nylon Line handrails are the perfect fit for railway station
Great Bentley railway station in Essex is looking brighter and fresher after Laidlaw installed its market-leading Nylon Line handrails. It was asked to supply more than 180 linear metres of its premium 40mm nylon handrails for the bridge and stairs that connect the two platforms.
This range is one of the most effective ways for organisations to comply with guidance in Approved Document M and BS8300 because its 4mm thick polyamide sleeve has a low thermal conductivity and is 68 times warmer to touch than stainless steel and 950 times warmer than aluminium. Laidlaw Nylon handrails are highly fracture resistant.

Bauder delivers largest solar array in higher education sector
The University of the West of England (UWE) in Bristol has recently quadrupled its solar generating capacity through the installation of 1,731 solar panels, which will enable it to produce over 400 MWh of electricity each year and making it the largest solar panel array in the UK university sector.
The new solar array has been installed on the roof of the University Enterprise Zone (UEZ) and the Bristol Robotics Laboratory, which have both undergone extensive refurbishment as part of the required works. Prior to the solar panels being installed, approved contractor Mitie Tilley Roofing overlaid the original failing single ply waterproofing with over 12,000m2 of Bauder’s lightweight, robust PVC single ply waterproofing system Thermofol.
The solar modules, which weigh just 12Kg/m2, were then fitted onto the waterproofing using a unique penetrationfree, welding method by renewable energy specialists Dulas. This installation technique means that the roof is not compromised by penetrations for fixings
nor is it ballasted, which would add additional weight loading to the roof.
The new photovoltaic system will generate at least 74.32 Megawatt Hours of solar power each year which should; cover half of the energy consumed within the building, save around 200 tonnes of carbon and provide annual savings of over £50,000 a year.
The university is highly committed to sustainability and energy efficiency, and this solar project is just part of a much wider plan to achieve its carbon reduction goals and enhance local renewable energy capacity.
Fabia Jeddere-Fisher, Energy Engineer at UWE, stated: “Normally, panels placed on flat roofs require either weighing down or fixings that penetrate the roof membrane, which can introduce the risk of leaks.
“The system we have chosen means that the panels are welded into place, reducing load, and reducing the need for roof penetrations.”
Air tight timber frames
The latest innovation from manufacturer Simpson Strong-Tie is the timber frame panel closer - or TFPC.
The connector provides the quickest and most accurate way of drawing together timber frame panels and eliminating gaps – and that’s important, because those gaps contribute to air leakage and insulation issues.
The TFPC features an angled plate which guides a structural screw (included) into the adjacent timber frame panels at precisely the angle necessary to pull them together to form an air tight bond, with the added benefit that it won’t damage the substrate.
The special design of the screw cinches the panels together and gives 3kN of shear capacity – keeping them that way.
Simpson Strong-Tie Timber Frame expert Fraser Pilkington explains:
“It seems such a simple solution, but we put a great deal of thought into making it easy to use, with no room for error. The combination of the guide plate and screw achieves exactly that.”
The TPFC is supplied as a kit, which includes the guide plate, structural screw and two square twist nails.
Search TFPC at www.strongtie.co.uk for a demonstration video as well as performance data and installation advice.

Hotel guests can relax under a Hunter Douglas ceiling
A new £4.5m spa at Kenwick Park Hotel in Louth features a dramatic £60,000 timber roof ceiling, manufactured by Hunter Douglas. The building features a 600m2 Hunter Douglas 111m linear open solid wood ceiling system. Specified in African Ayous on a corrosionresistant suspension system, the exterior grade multi-faceted ceiling was specified with a 19mm gap, was complex in design and installation due to the shape of the triangular openings that were formed by the roof structure. The wood panels are finished on all sides with a water-based varnish, and they are impregnated with Magma Firestop, which achieves Class ‘0’ BS476 fire rating. They also have Hunter Douglas’s standard non-woven acoustic fleece bonded to the back.

Alumasc’s Derbigum Olivine cleans the air
Alumasc’s Derbigum Olivine roofing membrane is a highly effective, durable waterproofing solution which also helps counter global warming by neutralising CO2. When rainwater lands on Olivine a chemical reaction transforms the CO2 into environmentally harmless water, magnesium carbonate and sand. Also, the Olivine in Alumasc’s Derbigum only requires grinding to the right size – unlike some other membranes which require sulphuric acid or chlorine gas. Very hard wearing, Alumasc’s Derbigum Olivine is the only bituminous membrane with a 40-year BBA durability statement. For further information visit www.alumascroofing.co.uk or call 03335 771500.
garage, eliminating the problem of losing driveway space through standard up and over doors, which ‘kick out’ on opening. Thanks to the vertical opening, cars can park close up to the garage door, a huge benefit in modern homes. There is no loss of width in the garage space, giving maximum parking space for wider vehicles such as 4 x 4s and MPVs.
Panel Systems has recently supplied aluminium faced Aluglaze panels in metallic silver for London City Airport’s Terminal Building refurbishment. Panel Systems manufactured 170m2 of Aluglaze panels, which feature powder coated or anodised aluminium bonded to an insulated core. In addition to the high performance insulated core material, the Aluglaze panels contained a sound reducing layer to achieve the acoustic reduction and wind loading criteria required for the refurbishment. The panels were required as part of a major refurbishment of the airports’ departure gates one to ten, to create more space and a modern, open-plan layout.

UK’s largest lead survey reveals lack of accreditation knowledge
Britain’s largest industry survey of its kind, commissioned by Midland Lead and conducted by Firebrand Insight, has exposed a lack of accreditation knowledge among those working with lead in the construction industry. Polypipe Brings the Heat with new Smart Plus Controls
This Autumn, Polypipe, the UK’s leading manufacturer of above and below ground drainage, plastic plumbing and underfloor heating (UFH) systems, is launching a new range of Smart Plus controls, designed specifically for use with their UFH systems.
Most systems available on the market have a complicated pairing system, with complex diagnostic tools. The new Smart Plus controls from Polypipe have ‘push button’ initial pairing for easy installation, a wiring centre which can house up to eight zones, and a screen for simple set up and diagnostics.
Suitable for use in all rooms, including kitchens and bathrooms, the controls are easily installed as an update to older systems. With full RF communication with the wiring centre, the controls are available in battery and mains powered variants, providing increased flexibility in new build houses and renovation projects.
As well as providing vast benefits to installers, such as quicker and easier
installation, the new control systems have been designed with the end user in mind, removing any concerns that homeowners may have. Users can choose anything from full TFT displays with touchscreen functionality to basic room sensors, making the system tailored to suit any budget or design. With a choice of five editable pre-set schedules or the option to create schedules from scratch, the system is designed to fit seamlessly around family life.
Available in a range of colours, including chrome, black, blue and purple, the new controls are sleek and suit any interior aesthetic. When not in use, the unit screen displays a rolling selection of personal images, or a clock. The easy to use menus can also be pin protected, meaning only the designated password holders can change the room temperatures.
Andy Coy, Product Manager at Polypipe, said: “There are currently a number of different universal product controls on the market, working with lots of systems, from heating to lighting. Having controls specifically designed to manage UFH allows users to make the most of the energy savings and controllability on offer. Using a UFH system and controls from the same manufacturer ensures homeowners have access to the best systems available.
“Arming installers with top of the range systems and advice, means that they can comfortably move into 2017, introducing or expanding UFH in their service offering.” For more information on the new controls and Polypipe’s wider underfloor heating range please visitwww.polypipeufh.com
Intratone door entry system protects elderly residents from unwanted visitors
Residents of a small local housing association in the Wirral are being protected by an innovative door entry system from Intratone, one of Europe’s largest access control specialists.
Wirral Methodist Housing Association (HA) completed works on a residential block of 24 flats over three storeys two years ago, but in more recent times the accommodation has been upgraded to cater specifically for less mobile residents.
Soon after moving into the apartments, electricians were regularly being called to site to relocate the existing fixed door entry handsets. Maintec Ltd, a local access control installer, was tasked with trying to establish a more cost-effective and time efficient solution that was easy for the elderly residents to use.
On that basis, Steve Cranshaw, Managing Director of Maintec Ltd, specified Intratone’s Visio 3G door entry system. Each of the residents is given their own fob which allows them easy access; for visitors, the system calls the house phone via GSM, and if no-one answers it then rings a second designated number, normally a mobile phone. Residents simply have to press the hash key on their device to allow entry.
David Corran, Head of Asset Management at Wirral Methodist Housing Association says it is proving to be an excellent solution for their residents: “The installation was very straight forward – it only took about half a day. We tailored the settings slightly to each resident’s requirements – in one flat, for example, it is set to ring the house phone twice instead of a mobile.
“Whenever we have had an issue, the support teams respond almost immediately. I would not hesitate to specify this product on other similar sites, especially where there is a predominance of residents with mobility issues.”

Sudstech
Sudstech specified to re-open Magic Roundabout Subway
Langford Direct Ltd has recently worked with Hertfordshire County Council to re-open the subway of the well-known “Magic Roundabout” in Hemel Hempstead. Langford Direct’s Sudstech highly porous paving system has now been applied as a cost effective solution to drain any excess water from the footpath, whilst also creating an attractive and durable new surface. Also known as the Plough Roundabout, the roundabout has gathered a reputation due to its size and complexity as it consists of six mini-roundabouts covering a large area of the highway. This underpass has now recently been re-opened following resurfacing works to the using the Sudstech porous paving solution. The works comprised the application of the porous material to replace the existing deteriorated resin-bound gravel surfacing covering the entire subway and surrounding areas, which will prevent water build up and reduce the risk of a slippery or icy surface as a result of surface water. Hertfordshire County Council specified Sudstech to support the pump by draining all excess water through the landscaping material itself In having the porous material, all landscape maintenance costs are significantly reduced as the surface does not deteriorate from the effects of water or harsh weather conditions.
The Sudstech system, designed and developed by Langford Direct Ltd., offers a sustainable drainage solution that replicates the natural infiltration method of the water cycle that is highly efficient and maintenance free. With the ability to absorb up to 50,000 litres of water per square metre, per hour, Sudstech eliminates the need for additional drainage systems which are subject to frequent blockages and maintenance. Sudstech can be specified in a range of colours to provide an attractive paving solution that can be used to match any landscaping theme.

Roofing, Cladding & Insulation
Wetherby gets top marks at Midlands School
A major £6.9m development to construct a new state-of-the-art special educational needs school in Birmingham has utilised external wall insulation from Wetherby Building Systems to help the school operate as a highly energy efficient building.
The Pines School project involved transforming two old derelict buildings, Josiah Mason College and the Canavan building, into a new facility to accommodate 200 reception to year six children with special educational needs (SEN).
The two traditional solid brick buildings were thermally inefficient and Complete Rendering Solutions was tasked with installing an effective external wall insulation (EWI) system to bring the buildings in line with current building regulations. The installers turned to EWI specialists Wetherby Building Systems, which recommended its EpsiWall system as the most effective for the project.
The EpisWall system installed comprised 70mm phenolic insulation, which was finished with four different shades of
WBS silicone render. One challenge facing Complete Rendering Solutions was that the client wanted to replicate a plinth that ran around the existing building. The effect was successfully re-created by using EPS insulation to build up and shape round the plinth to create the desired appearance.
Installing the EpsiWall system from Wetherby has brought the building in line with Part L of the Building Regulations, upgrading it from a U-Value of 2.07 W/m2K to 0.26 W/m2K. In addition to the thermal benefits, The EWI solution has met the design aspirations of the school and utilising WBS Silicone ‘K’ render in a mix of white, blue and teal shades has provided a clean, contemporary and calming appearance for the school.
Commenting on the project, Steve Baker from Complete Rendering Solutions said: “With such an old building that had been derelict for a number of years, the thermal properties were extremely poor. We needed an EWI solution that could effectively bring the property in line with current building regulations and the EpsiWall solution did just that.
“There was some detailing that needed to be achieved with the use of the EWI to recreate a plinth effect and the technical team at Wetherby were a great support to ensure we had the right products to achieve the desired outcome.”
Wetherby Building Systems Ltd is the UK’s market leader in the design and supply of a wide range of solid wall insulation (SWI) systems. Comprising a wide range of external and internal wall insulation solutions, Wetherby’s systems offer environmentally sympathetic façade solutions that have been successfully installed on many domestic refurbishment projects, new build schemes, commercial buildings and educational establishments for over 20 years.

Klober
Keeping children safe from falling roof tiles
According to Aviva, storm force winds, sub-zero temperatures and snow pose a growing risk of tile and mortar fragments being dislodged from roofs. With extended overhangs the potential for pedestrians to pass directly beneath a falling tile is greater still so buildings in town centres and schools in particular need added protection. Individual injury insurance claims have exceeded £13,000* so a preventative measure such as the Klober Trapac® Tile & Snow Guard will pay dividends throughout the year. Suitable for flat or profiled concrete interlocking tiles, it catches débris but allows melting snow to pass through. Installation is quick and easy using lightweight support brackets which need no additional support battens.

The FRC perfected by the company in the mid 70’s allows our FASERFIX® channels and trash boxes to have much thinner walls yet are very much stronger when compared with similar non-reinforced concrete products. Working with main contractor Willmott Dixon Construction Ltd, a reduced depth drainage unit was engineered with special footings and adjusted outlets in order for it to sit flush with tiled flooring in showering and changing areas. It was manufactured in 316 stainless steel and to a special width so as to accommodate a plastic cover, rather than a standard stainless steel cover, which was deemed to be more accommodating to the end users needs.

DELABIE, the European market leader for water controls and sanitary fittings in the public and commercial sector, has modelled its core products to meet the requirements of BIM technology. Available in two formats – REVIT and IFC, the files can be downloaded directly from DELABIE’s recently relaunched website www.delabie.co.uk.
Widely used in in public procurement projects, Building Information Modelling allows stakeholder collaboration, reduces the risk of errors and lowers costs at the building’s design stage. The digital model also provides information to support the construction and operation of a building throughout its entire lifecycle. In addition, to a 3D graphic representation, the “smart” object also includes important technical data for DELABIE’s core products.

DELABIE’s BIM files can be downloaded via the relevant product data sheet or by using the Datashare facility. This file sharing centre makes it possible to download all the documents relating to a particular product at the same time, such as product sheets, technical descriptions, photos, line drawings, AutoCAD files, installation guides and approval certificates. There is no need to register to access the files.
Creating a personalised catalogue is also very easy on the new DELABIE website. Users can select products, a process made simple by large thumbnails and short descriptions which allow quick product comparisons. These are then automatically formatted into a tailor-made digital catalogue which can be exported in Excel, WORD or PDF format.
Taking its cues from the technical catalogues, the delabie.co.uk website, incorporating BIM files and Datashare is an efficient and intuitive tool for architects, installers, consultants and plumbing merchants.

Hunter Douglas
Bespoke design adds elegance to Hunter Douglas folding shutters at Mediterranean complex
Motorised folding shutters manufactured by Hunter Douglas have provided deluxe private villas overlooking the Mediterranean Sea with a stunning visual effect as well as practical solar glare reduction. Designed by celebrated Israeli architect Ilan Pivko, the cliff top villas in Harsuf, near Tel Aviv, the first floors of the sleek villas on the south-eastern side are complemented by motorised folding shutters that have an architect-designed pattern in the perforations that give the illusion of falling leaves. The challenge for Hunter Douglas, the international leader in architectural building products, was to create a curved façade of motorised folding shutters that closed at 180 degrees and concealed the runners to ensure that a clean, flat uniform surface is created when the shutters are closed.

Samuel Heath Door closers maintain Kipling’s spirit
Samuel Heath’s Powermatic controlled, concealed door closers have been used by the Rocco Forte group to retain the high-end aesthetics of rooms and suites at Brown’s Hotel, one of London’s most elegant boutique residences. A total of 75 rooms have been fitted with the door closers, amongst them a new suite named in honour of Rudyard Kipling, who is believed to have written The Jungle Book whilst staying there.
David Rozmetov, the hotel’s chief engineer, states, “We did not want to use surface-mounted door closers because they would spoil the appearance of our exquisite interiors. Powermatic was selected as the best option after considering a number of alternatives.”
