Manufacturers provide revealing insights into BIM
Hailed as a revolution for the industry Building Information Modelling has undoubtedly had a significant influence on the specification process.
But it is fair to say that BIM has still not had the sort of industry-wide impact the Government was initially predicting.
For seven years, NBS has chartered the rise of BIM within the UK design community and has launched its first report into the views of construction product manufacturers.
With the support of the Construction Products Association (CPA), the report is now freely available for manufacturers to understand from its own community, what impact BIM is having on the industry.
NBS CEO Richard Waterhouse said: “Collaboration is at the heart of BIM, and through the standardised information held in wellstructured models, manufacturers and designers will be able to work increasingly closely together, making sure the right product is selected, installed and used through the life of a project.”
The majority of UK manufacturers are already taking steps to provide product information in a format that can be placed into the designers’ own model, and manufacturers agree that BIM information will be increasingly required by specifiers.
However, work to support this community is still needed as only a minority – 21 percent – believe they are confident when it comes to BIM knowledge and skills.
And for those who are progressing well, the community is relying on collaboration from those outside their own organisations to help overcome barriers to BIM.
Peter Caplehorn, CPA Deputy Chief Executive and Policy Director, said: “Whilst still far from the norm, there is no doubt the UK construction industry is on the cusp of a technological advancement.
“Currently we are in a situation where the supply chain is not as well coordinated as it could be, but through digitalisation our industry will find more e cient, cost-e ective and smarter ways to do things.”
Manufacturers believe that BIM will deliver real benefits, including reducing costs and creating time e ciencies through the design, build and maintenance lifecycle. But the Government still has a vital role to play in ensuring it becomes an industry-wide revolution.

BIM (Building Information Modelling) is a smart 3D model-based procedure that provides the Architect, Engineer, Builder and Designer the understanding and relevant tools to more efficiently plan, design, build, and maintain buildings and infrastructure. Gary Dean, Managing Director of OnLevel UK, said from day one he was keen to ensure that all the company’s products were ‘BIM Ready’ and the BIM files easily accessible online. “Although BIM isn’t currently required for every project, it is being taken on and certainly on the increase in use (only public-sector construction projects have been delivered using BIM, since 2016). Here at OnLevel we are keen to embrace innovation and appreciate intention of BIM’s ethos to improve value, operational efficiency, reduce cost and improve the quality of customer outcomes. These are all core aims of OnLevel and our approach to business.” Alexandra Court, Ashton-under-Lyne, OL7 0QN T: 01618 049500 E: sales@onlevel-uk.com

Glazing Vision
Beautiful terrace renovation with fixed Flushglaze rooflight
This fine Victorian terraced house is located in the fashionable Harringey Ladder within the North London Borough of Haringey, and was renovated by Trevor Brown Architects. The installation of a Flushglaze fixed rooflight from Glazing Vision was key to unlocking the natural light in the windowless kitchen area, which shares its exterior wall with the neighbour’s house. The architect was satisfied that Glazing Vision’s bespoke Flushglaze fixed rooflight provided excellent thermal performance, with its combination of low emissivity glass, argon-filled cavities and warm edge spacer bars. The framework is sealed by a gasket, which means there is no need for a thermal break, thus keeping the profile as reduced as possible. R32 room air conditioning selected for UCL
One of University College London’s (UCL) main buildings has been equipped with a new R32 air conditioning system from Mitsubishi Electric for the Division of Biosciences.
The Division is housed in the impressive Rockefeller Building, a sevenstorey building on University Street, close to Euston Square Station and home to the original University College Hospital Medical School.
UCL’s Division of Biosciences boasts an outstanding international reputation and a community of over 500 staff and 300 PhD students engaged in cutting edge research and collaboration.
The College needed a quick and efficient heating and cooling system which also met UCL’s environmental requirements and Mitsubishi Electric’s M Series MSZ-LN was chosen due to the pivotal role R32 refrigerant will play in meeting future legislation and reducing the environmental impact of air conditioning, heat pumps and refrigeration.
Keith Kerridge, Building Services Manager, UCL Estates, said, “The Rockefeller building required an extra air conditioning system on one of its floors and we were impressed with what Mitsubishi Electric’s system could offer. We wanted a system that would provide a comfortable working environment for our staff and students, as well as being environmentally friendly. The M Series MSZ-LN suits our needs perfectly.”
The two stylish air conditioning units were installed over a three-day period by Artic Building Services and are the first R32 systems within UCL’s estate. The short installation period was crucial to ensure minimum disruption to the building’s occupants whilst work was going on.
“UCL made an excellent choice with Mitsubishi Electric’s R32 air conditioning units, which are stylish, sophisticated and highly energy efficient. We were able to install the wall mounted system in a timely and efficient manner, with minimal disruption to staff and students,” explained Lee Rumble of Artic Building Services.
Another feature that makes the M Series range suitable for UCL is its quiet operation, with noise levels as low as 19dBA, making it ideal for use in a quiet study environment.
The M Series MSZ-LN air conditioning range was Mitsubishi Electric’s first product in its UK line-up to utilise R32 refrigerant. MSZ-LN units include a built-in Wi-Fi interface enabling full control and monitoring via the MELCloud App, and a sophisticated i-see Sensor in the unit automatically monitors room occupancy, position and body temperatures to deliver customised comfort.
For further details on the R32 options available from Mitsubishi Electric, visit http://timeforr32.co.uk.

Sioo Wood
SiOO:X treated cedar cladding in the Lake District
Timber cladding is being used increasingly as a priority choice amongst architects and designers for use as a protective skin for buildings. This is a reflection of the natural and unique quality that wood provides. Whether the project is a large scale development or a small private dwelling, timber cladding gives greater flexibility in design, is versatile, attractive and environmentally friendly. Having made an often significant investment in timber cladding the question of how it is best protected arises. This natural look is increasingly sought after but the challenge is, how to achieve it without taking the risk of uneven weathering on different aspects of the building, or in protected areas, such as overhanging eaves. Another issue can be the unsightly tide marks caused by extractive wash out, a particular problem with western red cedar.

Tobermore hard landscaping solution specified at British Airways i360
The Terra Firma Consultancy provided an informal landscape design advisory service to Marks Barfield Architects, sourcing the most appropriate hard landscaping solution at British Airways i360, the new landmark attraction on Brighton beach. The Terra Firma Consultancy presented Marks Barfield Architects with Tobermore’s Sienna Duo - a block paving product with a striking granite aggregate finish that offered the contemporary look desired for the iconic structure. Robyn Butcher, Landscape Architect at The Terra Firma Consultancy, noted that due to the contemporary style of the design and build, paving products were the most suitable hard landscaping material for the project.
“The aesthetics of paving was ideal for the envisioned design and, as other areas on the beachfront close to the project were due to be refurbished with new paving in the near future, we knew that paving around the British Airways i360 building would create continuity with these existing elements,” she explained. “Paving also provided the benefits of being easy to lay and easy to replace.” Robyn was involved in the process of sourcing and assessing paving products for Marks Barfield Architects and she was highly impressed with the quality, aesthetics and performance offered by Tobermore’s Sienna Duo block paving. “A product with a modern appearance was needed to complement the structure which was crafted with a real futuristic feel,” she added. “The modern finish and duo sizes available with Tobermore’s Sienna block paving was ideal for creating a contemporary look that was in keeping with the style of the national visitor attraction.”

Polypipe launches new high performance Effast Pro Flow® Butterfly Valve
Polypipe, a leading manufacturer of high quality valves and fittings, has launched the Effast Pro Flow® Butterfly Valve range. The new valves have been designed to provide a reliable and high performance product for shut-off or flow regulating applications, offering a near linear response through the valve’s full range of operations to deliver exceptional fine control capabilities.
The Pro Flow® Butterfly Valve is available in three different series. The High Performance P series and the High Temperature T series are ideal for industrial applications such as slurry lines, reactor cooling and chemical processes, while the High Flow H series is suited to water applications including swimming pools, filtration and irrigation systems.
The new valves feature a PVCu body covered by a gasket, with a disc located in the centre of the body, operated by a shaft using a handle or an actuator. Each series offers an integral seal, fine control attributes, and ease of actuation, showcasing the reliability, experience, skills and knowledge that keep Polypipe Pressure Systems at the forefront of innovation.
Key features of the Effast Pro Flow® Butterfly Valve
Each Pro Flow® Butterfly Valve features a certified EDPM main gasket that covers the entire body, protecting it from chemical substances. The design of the valves’ internal profile also ensures a completely secure seal. All valves are actuator ready in accordance to ISO5211, easy to actuate without extra components, and require just two bolts to disassemble the handle.
The closing system of the valve includes a safety lock which offers fine tuning capabilities thanks to the regulating plate, which delivers 19 different position options for the disc, for precise flow regulation. The regulating notch plate/ handle can also be removed for the mounting of an electric or pneumatic actuator, or for the fitting of a manual gearbox.
The T Series
The T series valves are PPH butterfly valves. They feature a PPH glass fibre reinforced body that offers high mechanical resistance and smooth
operation across a wide range of temperatures, from -15 up to +95 degrees. The valve’s High Temp PPH disc boasts a unique shape that increases the disc’s resistance to abrasions and stresses, making this product particularly suited to heavier industrial applications involving aggressive fluids. The T series Pro Flow® Butterfly Valve can be supplied with a FPM gasket upon request.
The P Series
The P series valves are PVCu butterfly valves with a patented high flow PVCu disc with an optimised profile. This design allows for a linear flow and greater flow rate in comparison to traditional discs, delivering one of the greatest flow rates on the market. The external surface of the P series valve is free from edges and ribs, reducing pressure drop, whilst ensuring resistance to corrosion at varying temperatures. The P series valves can also be supplied with a FPM gasket upon request.
The H Series
The H series valves feature a strong PVCu disc and body, and a zinc plated carbon steel stem, making them resistant to chemical stresses and to corrosion at varying temperatures. Like the P series valves, the H series products feature an offset disc which allows for a linear response and excellent flow rate regulation.
Simon Howard, Managing Director of Building Services and International at Polypipe, says, “Our new Effast Pro Flow® Butterfly Valve has been designed to address a key issue with traditional butterfly valves, that is, the non-linear response curve. In traditional blade designs, a linear response is typically only achieved when the valve is between 25% and 60% open, which makes the fine control of flow rates very difficult.”
“Thanks to its patented design, the Effast Pro Flow® Butterfly Valve is able to provide a near linear response through its full range of operations. Coupled with the advanced handle locking mechanism, this ensures that flow rates can be precisely controlled through valves across each of our High Performance, High Temperature, and High Flow series.”

Architectural Copper Awards Winners Announced
The results of the 2017 European Copper in Architecture Awards 18 have just been announced.
The eighteenth iteration of these biennial architectural awards recognises the growing influence of copper and its alloys in modern design. But it also exposes to a wider international audience inspirational projects, some of which might otherwise go unrecognised. The 2017 judging panel consisted of four architects, all recipients of previous Copper in Architecture Awards: Ebbe Waehrens (BBP ARKITEKTER, Copenhagen), Maxime Enrico, (LAN, Paris), Ville Hara (Avanto Architects, Helsinki) and Craig Casci (GRID Architects, London).
A unanimous judges’ choice, the Maersk Tower research complex in Copenhagen, designed by C.F. Møller Architects, was the clear Winner. A major landmark building prominent on Copenhagen’s skyline, it nonetheless delivers on many other levels as well.
The conceptual development of its complex programme offers a fresh, more openly interactive research building typology enabling interdisciplinary functions to work across and between floors and departments. Its response to urban context is impressive with a gentle curved form making it slim, elegant and sympathetic to its surroundings. And its qualities extend to exceptional detailing throughout with an innovative use of gently animated copper fin facades that moves in response to the solar gain and defines the building.
The Public Choice Winner, with by far the most votes cast on copperconcept.org, was a new copper entrance pavilion hosting an innovative ‘water printer’ sculpture.
It celebrates the regeneration of the remarkable 19th century reservoir in Wrocław, converted into ‘Hydropolis’ – the only knowledge centre in Poland devoted entirely to water. The copper to the side is punched with holes to mimic computer punch cards in keeping with the water printer theme.
One of two infrastructure projects to be Commended was the Lahti Travel Centre, Finland, designed by JKMM Architects. The second Commended entry was a pair of entrance portals for the Bosruck Tunnel, Austria, designed by Riepl Riepl Architekten.
Overall, the judges found their role challenging because of the contrasting types, scales, design approaches and contexts of projects – but also the high quality of entries generally. They commented that the winning and shortlisted projects display very different strengths but all demonstrate that great buildings can be made with copper, whatever their uses. They were also delighted to see all sorts of building typologies benefit from investment in good design and top-quality materials such as copper.
The shortlisted and awarded entries will be celebrated through a promotional programme to an international audience, including an awards brochure, video interviews with winners, social media channels and Copper Architecture Forum magazine – all available via copperconcept.org. More information and images of all the 2017 entries and previous Awards can be viewed at: copperconcept.org/awards

A spectacular home made with HI-MACS on the French Riviera
On the hillside above Cannes, architect Pierre Guidoni, designer Jean Rogliano and fabricator Menuiserie Bareau created a breathtaking villa, completed with a façade made of HI-MACS®.
This ambitious project once again pushed the limits of creativity and, if it were not for HI-MACS®, both project manager and client say it would never have come to fruition.
Thanks to its thermoforming capacity, its versatility and its resistance to weather and UV rays, HI-MACS® perfected this flagship creation.
HI-MACS® was chosen as it would be able to successfully combine modernity, technicality and flexibility.
According to Jean Rogliano, HI-MACS® acrylic stone was the natural choice for this structure: “Its esthetics, its smoothness and its quality are able to simultaneously stand out from, and merge harmoniously with, the landscape of the Croix-des-Gardes district. It allowed us to create all sorts of rounded, arched and straight shapes and to envelop the villa in a gentle style, with an unparalleled quality of execution.”
With a surface area of 550m2, the façade is composed of a primary BWM 100 metal framework placed over the raw concrete façade, covered and insulated with polyurethane foam, into which 220 12-mm-thick HI-MACS® Cream panels are fitted using Keil sleeve anchors that are invisible from the exterior.
The thermoformed panels follow the curves, pillars and porthole windows of the villa perfectly, collectively forming an outer facing in line with expectations.

Tata Steel
ComFlor® keeps weight of four-storey extension to a minimum
Raised on stilts above a former listed fire station, the weight of the new Port House four-storey extension needed to be kept to a minimum. A flooring system that could easily be incorporated with a steel frame was vital to the design, a complicating factor which also helped in making the decision to use Tata Steel’s ComFlor® composite floor deck system throughout. ComFlor® helped ensure the best possible solution for the project, and scored highly for all of the project’s requirements. Its low self-weight was important in limiting the weight of the new extension which ‘floats’ above the existing building; its specification proved to be cost-effective and was capable of providing the required strength, as well as achieving the required loads and spans.

Gilberts
Fusing the options
Ventilation design and specification for multi-occupancy buildings is now as simple as A,B,C through an innovative approach pioneered by Gilberts. It has developed a stock, single-unit hybrid solution focussed on natural ventilation with heat recovery - its Mistrale Fusion System (MFS). The company’s pioneering approach has continued, with the evolution of the system that now enables simple addition of extra elements. Thus, the core MFS is manufactured as a standard product, with ‘add-on’ items to meet the varying specifications of each project. Elements such as heating coils, filters, silencers, duct connection outlets and louvre transformation, plus a range of air volumes for warm up or purge ventilation, to supplement the standard airflow rates, ensure the MFS brings a comprehensive hybrid solution to the extensive, variable building demands for ventilation. Maximising The Benefits Of Glass Lifts, Stairs & Balustrades
There is often a misconception of what you can and cannot do with glass as a material. It can seem limiting, but in reality, glass in an incredibly versatile material that is ideally suited to the modern home and continues to be a popular material within architectural and design. In many cases it can be a substitute for timber too.
Glass staircases are one of the elements in a home that can make the most of the glass’s versatile qualities, adding both a stylish contemporary appearance to an interior as well as increasing natural light flow making stairways feel more spacious.
Canal’s range of staircases are designed with these benefits in mind. Frameless glass balustrades offer a seamless connection with minimal obstruction to enhance the view from all angles. Glass balustrades are suitable for internal and external environments. The
benefit of glass balustrades is that is requires minimal maintenance, only the occasional clean. Glass does not corrode so it makes it the ideal material for staircases, balustrades and balconies.
Glass balustrades come in a range of finishing options such as sandblasting. Through this technique Canal can create patterns in any shape or form to add a decorative touch to staircases, walkways and balconies.
Glass stair treads combined with frameless glass balustrades offer a
clean contemporary look to suit any domestic or commercial interior. The combination of an open riser staircase with glass steps enhances and maximises the light flow within a room. Glass treads can also be sandblasted to create a slip resistance surface.
Find inspiration for your next staircase project by visiting the Canal Project Showcase at www.canal.eu.com, and discover a range of staircases in all shapes, sizes and materials.

DELABIE
Soft-touch technology designed for little hands
As the new cohort of pupils enters the education system, how many school toilets are really suitable for the younger generation? Water saving and low maintenance are key considerations, but functionality and comfort are also important for a 5-year old. Conventional push-button taps use hydraulic pressure to close the tap, however, this requires 6-7 kg of force to activate the water flow. This can be difficult for 5-year olds. DELABIE has developed Soft-touch technology to overcome this problem. The mechanism still relies on dynamic pressure to close the valve, but when the push-button is pressed, the mechanism is de-pressurised, reducing the amount of force required to activate the flow from 6kg to 3kg. Consequently, users experiences much less resistance when pressing the push-button.
