Welcome
Britain’s manufacturers have ended the year at a standstill as the toll of ongoing political uncertainty and downturn in major global markets shows little sign of ending anytime soon, according to a major survey released by Make UK, the manufacturers’ organisation and business advisory firm BDO LLP.
The survey also shows that a quarter (25.7%) of companies view increasing investment allowances as the main priority for the new Government, with a fifth believing cuts in corporation tax should be the priority.
Manufacturers’ confidence in the economy has picked up slightly but this is likely to have been influenced according to Make UK by a ‘no deal’ cli edge being avoided at the end of October.
However, this respite is most probably temporary and only when the uncertainty over the direction of travel on Brexit is ended will manufacturers really turn on the taps of much needed investment to boost the UK’s productivity performance.
“Firms are reporting weaker business activity overall, especially from the domestic UK market but export orders have increased slightly this quarter, indicating greater confidence from foreign customers about purchasing UK goods as concerns about an end of year no deal Brexit fade.
“Christmas, and the end of the year, are a time when people reflect on the past and try to begin afresh. Manufacturers will hope that the next twelve months will see an end to the political charade in Westminster and a return to focus on critical issues such as delivering a long term vision for the economy.”

Metalline
A1 constructed Spandrel panels prove a safe replacement for Camden Tower Blocks
Metalline’s fire rated non-combustible Ultima Spandrel panels have been specified to replace the existing window panels on five tower blocks on the Chalcots Estate in Camden. A key influence on the decision to specify Metalline’s Ultima Spandrel Panel was the fabricators willingness to put their product through an independent fire performance test to prove its integrity. The fire performance test was carried out independently by Efectis and Metalline’s Ultima Spandrel Panel is the UK’s first Spandrel Panel to achieve a fire rating of 60-minutes integrity and 60-minutes insulation. Constructed from A1 non combustible materials the Ultima Spandrel Panel can be specified in a range of finishes. The global success of Resiblock Resiecco showed Preston City Council that this was a product to trust and has now ultimately been utilised.

Waterfront church’s Sika Sarnafil roof triumphs at awards
Market-leading single ply roofing manufacturer Sika Sarnafil and leading Glasgow-based contractor Ashton Building Systems (Scotland) Ltd have triumphed at the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC), Scottish Roofing Contractor of the Year Awards 2019.
The awards, which recognise outstanding standards of workmanship and technical expertise in the roofing industry within Scotland and are judged by an independent expert panel, saw the refurbished roof of Clydebank’s striking, geometric Waterfront Parish Church come out on top in the Single Ply Roofing category.
Tasked with installing a new waterproofing system, as well as upgrading the thermal value of the roof and improving roof access for safe and easy future maintenance, Ashton opted for a mechanically fixed Sarnafil system. S327-15EL in lead grey was specified due to its ease and speed of installation and the fact that it was able to be fixed onto the existing roof decking. Involving high levels of complexity and detailing, the system was installed beautifully across a total of 10 roof areas, resulting in a 15-year system guarantee and an added 5-year diminishing warranty by Sika Sarnafil.

EQUITONE specified for secondary school expansion
A secondary school in West London used EQUITONE [tectiva] fibre cement facade material to create an aesthetically pleasing, natural and modern appearance that pays homage to the nearby Grade I-listed Chiswick House.
Architects at independent property, construction and infrastructure consultancy Pick Everard specified EQUITONE [tectiva] in colours Chalk, Linen and Calico for the expansion of Chiswick School, which is proud of its connection to Chiswick House – even using an image of the 18th century building as its logo.
EQUITONE [tectiva] is a through-coloured fibre cement facade material that offers elegant shades of natural colour, which provides a unique aesthetic effect. Characterised by the fine sanded lines and naturally occurring hues within the material, these enhance the natural matt appearance which comes to life with the effects of light and shade.
Matthew Sweeting, associate at Pick Everard, said: “We have previous experience in using EQUITONE materials as we have specified them for several other architectural projects. Because of this, we were aware
of its aesthetic qualities and knew it would help us in achieving a modern, cut-stone appearance.
“We chose EQUITONE as it’s a robust and durable material that has a life expectancy of at least 50 years, along with an A2-s1, d0

RCM
BBA certification for RCM products – quality guaranteed RCM are delighted to announce that three further products have successfully achieved the prestigious BBA accreditation.
Through extensive testing RCM have secured BBA approval for its Supertech Weatherboard, Multipurpose sheathing board and Renderflex render carrier board. undergone rigorous testing, an approval was achieved for all three. RCM are highly delighted with this prestigious outcome, confirming the outstanding quality of their sheathing boards, render carrier board and weatherboard façade.

Schlüter-Systems
Why should you use an uncoupling membrane?
Uncoupling membranes are about more than just preventing cracks: they have a multi-faceted role to play in achieving a long-lasting tiling assembly. Unlike an anti-fracture mat, which is designed solely for the purpose of preventing cracks in tile and stone, an uncoupling membrane is designed to separate the tile covering from the substrate below. This means that besides crack prevention, an uncoupling membrane offers a number of other benefits.
• Neutralises tensions between the substrate and tile covering
• Prevents deformation during the curing process
• Waterproofing • Load distribution Schlüter-Systems are the originators of the uncoupling membrane, and DITRA 25 is used across the world to ensure problem-free tile and stone coverings.

James Latham
FR Plywood proves poplar
Exclusive to James Latham in the UK, Garnica Fireshield is an FR Poplar Plywood which has been modified through an innovative plyto-ply process, producing outstanding flame-retardant properties.
Unlike other similar products with surface fire-retardant coatings, the FR properties of Garnica Fireshield are integral to the panel. During manufacturing, each individual layer of core veneer is treated prior to the final assembly, rendering it exceptionally fireresistant and ensuring its performance is not compromised, even after working or sanding.
Lightweight, exceptionally stable, easy to machine and easy to transport, Garnica Fireshield has Euro Class B certification, making it an ideal option for public areas where an independently assessed, FR panel is part of the specification.
Miles Kember, James Latham’s Group Plywood Director commented, “The quality of the faces, the wide range of finishes, the lightness and the superior technical characteristics of Garnica Fireshield all combine to make this class leading panel an excellent choice for any project requiring an FR certified solution.”
Particularly well suited to projects in restaurants, concert venues, schools, hospitals, museums and other public buildings, the most common applications are decorative interior wall panels, ceiling panels, elevator interiors, wall partitions, furniture and displays. Also, because of its lightness and ease of machining, it has proved a popular choice with the exhibition sector for stand building.
Produced using fast-growing, European plantation wood, Garnica Fireshield is responsibly sourced and ethically verified and is FSC® certified. It is also classified as B-s1-d0 according to EN13501, enabling it to be used for exterior building and construction use.
As the exclusive distributor of Garnica Poplar Plywood in the UK, as well as Fireshield, James Latham offer four other innovative Poplar Plywood products under the Garnica banner; Efficiency Poplar; in which the core and faces are made of Poplar from controlled and sustainable European plantations. Duraply; boasting exceptional durable and anti-fungal properties due to an innovative ply-to-ply treatment, making it particularly popular for marine applications, Elegance Birch; a Poplar panel with a beautiful Birch veneer to the face and back and the remarkable Ultralight plywood sandwich panel, weighing just 250kg per m3.
With 12 branches throughout the UK and Ireland, and product specification showrooms in London and Manchester, the full Garnica Plywood range is available directly from stock nationwide. Interpave
Case study confirms that SuDS cost less
The trade association Interpave has published a new case study which demonstrates that sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) – including concrete block permeable paving – should cost less than conventional piped drainage, both initially and in terms of maintenance.
Interpave’s new case study revisits the SuDS scheme at Lamb Drove in Cambourne, Cambridgeshire. This scheme demonstrates as many SuDS techniques as possible, including concrete block permeable paving, used in combination to form an effective management train. The Monitoring Project measured the performance of the SuDS over time, compared with that of a conventional piped drainage system on another nearby development, similar in size and density.
Overall, both capital and maintenance costs – and therefore whole-of-life costs – associated with the Study Site were much lower than those for the conventional piped drainage system Control Site. The Monitoring Report noted capital cost savings of £314 per home and also suggested 20-25% lower maintenance costs than traditional drainage on the Control Site. Having said that, further potential cost savings were also noted. In addition, monitoring of pollutants, biodiversity and resident satisfaction is testament to the SuDS, notably concrete block permeable paving delivering a gradual flow of treated water to open SuDS features further down the management train.
Interpave’s new case study is now available to download from Interpave’s website www.paving.org.uk

Marshalls
Marshalls supplies Indian sandstone to International Quarter London International Quarter London (IQL) is an exciting new space in Stratford dubbed as London’s new destination for progressive business. Gustafson Porter + Bowman’s landscape design has created intrigue through the use of angular zones comprising of precision cut rhombus shaped Indian sandstone. Alternating sections of cream Laurel Bank and buff / brown Brownridge are intersected by bands of grey Thornlake, black granite and Stainless Steel strips. The remarkable diamond shaped sandstone had to be meticulously cut to maintain the crisp linear flow of the space. In contrast to the sharp angles of the laying pattern, the outer edges used to create the planted areas were softer, utilising rounded contours for a unique finish.

Kemper
Kemper delivers green roof solution
A sustainable contemporary home featuring two green roofs has been constructed with the help of Kemper System. The homeowner and former builder helped to specify Kemper System’s Kemperol V210 liquid waterproofing resin for the project. The product was required for a sedum roof above the main living area and another above the new garage. The homeowner was keen to be involved in their design, especially the waterproofing to ensure the most effective solution. The Kemperol V210 liquid resin was installed ‘wet on wet’ in a single process using a reinforcement fleece. Once cured, it formed a seamless and elastomeric membrane. The waterproofing membrane is a vital element of any green roof specification.

Junckers
New research facility features Junckers flooring
A large expanse of Junckers’ Nordic Oak Boulevard flooring forms part of the new Kresen Kernow archive and research facility in Cornwall. A technically challenging installation, flooring contractor Tre Concepts had to work within an accuracy of 0.6mm to allow for the varying sub floor levels as well as the difference in levels of the granite slabs. Around the rectangular sections of granite, the 185mm wide floorboards were cut lengthwise to form frames around the slabs as per the architect’s design. The 20.5mm thick solid wood floor forms a durable surface for a public space and a fitting backdrop to the strong visual appeal of the interior. A floor from Junckers can be sanded and refinished up to ten times.

The base shoe can be surface, side-mounted or even installed inside the substrate, so tiles run up directly to the glass. The system can accommodate glass thicknesses from 17.52 to 25.52mm and is compliant with all major European standards including BS 6180:2011. The patented horizontal Taper-Loc® system makes things easier for the installer too.
Allowing installation and removal of glass panels within minutes from the ‘safe’ side of the balustrade, the system significantly reduces fitting time, using precision tension to secure the glass in the aluminium base shoe without the use of cement. Using CRL’s exclusive TLK12 installation and removal tool, the Tapers simply slide horizontally in the base shoe before being compressed, where it expands and locks into place.

same sound reduction capability. The arcing blades bring the number of blade profile: acoustic attenuation options now available as standard to 12, either in supply, or supply & fit packages. Further adding to the ‘sound and vision’ dimension, all Gilberts’ louvres can be PPC, PVF and PVF2 powder coated to any RAL colour, with the possibility of anodised in some instances.
Fläkt Woods
Fläkt Woods chooses Danfoss Drives to make buildings safer
Fläkt Woods, a leading supplier of indoor air and critical air solutions, has selected Danfoss HVAC VLT® variable speed drives (VSDs) for use in its groundbreaking fully tested and certified high temperature fan/VSD range. The packaged solutions in this new range, all of which offer full compliance with the latest EN12101-3:2015 standard, will make it significantly easier for designers to provide efficient and dependable smoke control in buildings during fire events. “Bypassing the VSD during a fire event means that the fan must run at full speed, which makes it difficult for designers to implement their required smoke control and extraction strategies,” said Andy Cardy, Product Manager for Axial Fans at Fläkt Woods.

New R32 VRF air conditioning provides complete solution
Mitsubishi Electric has launched new R32 VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) air conditioning systems to offer the UK market the first complete range of lower Global Warming Potential (GWP) solutions.
The R32 City Multi YNW range is available in both heat recovery and heat pump variants to deliver lower GWP for large air conditioning systems. For the first time in the UK, this allows customers to use one single lower GWP refrigerant across a complete building or an entire network.
“Under the growing pressure of the F-Gas phase down regulations, the market is demanding viable and positive solutions which are future proof for businesses and last the full lifecycle of the product,” explains Mark Grayston, Head of the Product Marketing Department.
At a customer conference this month, Mitsubishi Electric asked its partners what the key factors in the adoption of R32 VRF are and the top three responses were: 1) cost; 2) proven VRF concept; and 3) end user CSR. “Customers are looking for products that meet both current and future legislation and with the launch of the UK’s first R32 VRF systems, we are delighted to be able to offer the market a complete range of lower GWP solutions,” adds Grayston.
Mitsubishi Electric also announced a warranty extension at the conference for its top partners and will now offer 10-year warranties on all air conditioning equipment installed by its Diamond Quality Partners (DQPs).
“With R32 comes an increased need for quality in both application and installation,” adds Grayston. “Our DQPs are proven to meet the highest standards of installation, including subjecting themselves to an annual independent audit of their work, so we wanted to support their commitment with this extended warranty”.
R32 is now the norm for split-type air conditioning systems offering a lower GWP (675) than R410A (2088). Whilst Hybrid VRF has provided a viable R32 solution for larger systems, no standard VRF range using R32 has been available – until now.
Utilising the innovative and highly efficient City Multi YNW outdoor unit, this R32 solution offers complete design flexibility, high efficiency and low noise.
R32 makes up 50% of the existing R410A refrigerant already found in many current VRF systems, is highly energy efficient and is easy to recycle. A GWP of one third of R410A, plus reduced overall system refrigerant volumes means lower refrigerant total and lower global warming impact.
Available to specify from October, the new City Multi R32 models will be in stock from January 2020, offering sizes from 22kW to 34kW in both heat recovery and heat pump variants.
With a range of ducted and 4-way blow ceiling cassette indoor units available, the systems provide flexibility of installation for R32 VRF in many applications. They also work with the comprehensive range of advanced controllers to ensure effective and efficient operation.
“This new range enables us to offer a complete choice for any building and any customer,” comments Mark Grayston, “Whether CSR is high on the agenda for customers, or whether lifecycle cost or capital cost are more important, there is now a complete R32 choice available from Mitsubishi Electric.”

Closomat
Housing with care
The use of assistive technology in housing is receiving additional relevance with the publication of new research and strategies. According to Housing LIN, housing developers and providers can deliver enhanced benefits for residents by constructing more housing with care type properties. Toilet assistive technology manufacturer Closomat is urging that helpful fixtures are utilised to simultaneously deliver that independent living with care and reduce demand on healthcare services. Explains Robin Tuffley, Closomat marketing manager, “Provision of equipment such as toilet lifters and/or wash & dry (smart) toilets reduces reliance on care intervention, enabling people to undertake intimate tasks with little- or no- help. It improves hygiene and thus health. It reduces risk of falls. All are factors that would otherwise require healthcare intervention.
