New Student E-mail Improves Communication
A
new, highly versatile and more effective email connection for TSTC students is in the implementation process. The goal for the new system – MyMail – is to improve communication campus-wide.
mymail.tstc.edu
MyMail applications will offer more versatile technology benefits to students! It operates through Google Apps Education Edition, which is a free suite of hosted communication and collaboration applications. Some of the communication features include Google powered by Mail, Google Calendar and Google Talk; the
collaboration options include Google Docs, Google Sites, Google Labs and Google Video. The package will bring the latest technology to your fingertips.
Faculty and staff will only acknowledge student email coming from MyMail beginning this fall. You will be encouraged to check your MyMail account frequently to receive important campus and course information from faculty and staff offices. All students will be receiving information about their new MyMail account in the mail. Be watching for it, take the time to learn all about the e-mail system and fully use it to enrich your college experience.
mymail.tstc.edu
Students will use their Web Advisor /Universal username and password to log in at http://mymail.tstc.edu. Each user must accept a service agreement before they access a new e-mail account. Their individual e-mail address will be the Web Advisor/Universal user name followed by @mymail.tstc.edu. For example, Joe Smith could become jsmith@mymail.tstc.edu.

Art Instructor Creates More With Less
A
rtist and TSTC instructor Rene Garza has a different view of how art should be created and presented.
“Mas con menos. I want to do more with less, “ he said. Most of the pieces in his office are stencil on euca board with spray paint and pieces of torn billboard. The passion that drives him to create these unique pieces is The Army of National Liberation movement, also known as the Zapatistas. “They stood in solidarity and said that not everything is for sale, and that their way of life should not cease to exist, nor is it irrelevant.” Garza said. “They have taken back their public space and time. Their government is one that is practiced as obeying Government of Gobierno Obediciendo. I try my best to practice Arte Obediciendo.” In addition to Garza’s array of knowledge, art and styles, his ultimate goal is to expose the public to art. 06
by Lesli Nelson, DMDT
“Art should be accessible to everyone.” Having shown in Matamoros, Weslaco, Austin and Corpus Christi, he said that the best places to show and make art is in public places.” He has toured through Chiapas, Tamaulipas, Mexico while selling photos and artwork. “I paid my trip to and from by selling photographs,” he added.
Garza encourages everyone to come join his workshops. Participation is free to the public; donations are accepted but not required. To participate, bring a posterboard, a No. 1 exacto-type knife, a can of spray paint, some designs, and something to paint your image on. And remember the creativity!
“We usually have workshops set up at one of the cardinal points. We make shop on sidewalks or in some unoccupied buildings, “ he explained. Free workshops and upkeep of a virtual museum are what occupy his free time. Museoimenos, which began August 8, 2006, is a project that exposes the public to art and varying styles.
For more information about Museoimenos, go to museoimenos.org.
Art to and for the people is his motto. “The best workshop took place in the marketplace in Matamoros. People who were shopping, eating and passing by would stop to see what we were doing and eventually join in.”

Don’t Struggle Through College: Find a Mentor! A
by Patricia Morales
recent ar ticle from The Houston Chronicle ("Mentors show Hispanic youths college possible" 7/16/09) referenced some shocking and disappointing information. According to the U.S. Department of Education’s most recent statistics, only 14.2 percent of Hispanics graduate from high school and of that group only 7.2 percent of Hispanics receive a bachelor’s degree, compared to 72 percent of white students in 2005-2006. Living in the Rio Grande Valley, which primarily consists of a Hispanic population, these national statistics may seem a bit harsh, but this is the reality.
Harlingen students who have knowledge about the campus as well as knowledge about different programs and resources to assist and support the success of TSTC students.
Mentoring usually occurs in one of two forms, formal and informal mentoring. Most people have had experience with informal mentoring at some point in their lives such as a teacher who encouraged learning, a family member who supported an idea or even a friend who was there to listen. The Access to Success student mentors offer their support and knowledge in a formal
Another way that TSTC is working to alleviate the disparity of the low Hispanic pursuit of postsecondary education is through a mentoring program aimed at local middle school students. Access to Success: Career Exploration Through Mentoring will begin its second year for the 20092010 school year. Along with on-campus student mentors, there are also middle school mentors who travel to local school districts such as San Benito, Harlingen, La Feria, Santa Maria and San Perlita. These mentors work one on one with middle school students to teach them about different career paths in technical fields, life skills such as resume writing and most importantly the mentors are role models for these young students.
Mentors are good listeners, people who care, people who want to help people bring out strengths that are already there.
Students, particularly Hispanic students, have a higher risk of not completing high school and an even lower chance of pursuing postsecondary education such as an associate’s degree or higher. Although historically there are many social, cultural and economic obstacles for Hispanic students who are interested in pursuing higher education, there are also valuable resources available to aid them in this pursuit. One such resource available to TSTC Harlingen students is the Access to Success student mentors.
setting. Access to Success mentors are available to assist all students on the TSTC campus with issues that may be making their college experience difficult or frustrating such as time management, study skills, goal setting and other factors that affect learning.
What is mentoring? A matter of trust. Mentoring is a structured and trusting relationship that brings people together with caring individuals who offer guidance, support and encouragement aimed at developing the competence and character of the mentee. A mentor is someone who, along with family, provides a person with support, counsel, friendship, reinforcement and constructive example. Mentors are good listeners, people who care, people who want to help people bring out strengths that are already there. A mentor is not a foster parent, therapist, parole officer, or cool peer. The Access to Success mentors are TSTC
Students facing a difficult time adjusting to college life either as a first year student or as a returning adult student can utilize the mentor service on the TSTC Harlingen campus. Mentors can be found in the Academic Achievement Center in Building D (Biomedical / Dental Laboratory Technology), Room 138. Mentors are available throughout the week and their fall schedules will be posted campus-wide and on the Student Success Web site soon. If you or someone you know is having a difficult time adjusting to college life or if you are interested in help with career exploration, the Access to Success mentors would be a great resource.
All of the Access to Success mentors (on- and off-campus) participated in a two-week summer camp with 60 middle school students. Many of these students had never been spoken to about college and some had never been informed about TSTC! Students participated in hands-on activities with various programs on the campus such as Biomecial Equipment Technology, Chemical-Environmental Technology and Auto Collision Technology. Middle school students completed some educational projects, such as a radio that they built in the BET program, and generated hope for their futures in higher education. If you or someone you know would benefit from a mentor or if you would like to be a student mentor, information can be found on the Student Success Web site under "Mentoring Information" or by calling the Mentoring Coordinator at 956.364.4164.
SUPPORT SERVICES OFFICE TECHquity participants pose with the homemade thermometers they built while attending the free program at the Harlingen Public Library on July 22. The program, coordinated by Support Services staff, is designed to raise interest in math and science for children, especially girls. Children attending the program were given a short lesson on how a thermometer works and made their own to take home. Rusty the Mustang was also on hand to look at the children's creations. Culinary Arts Students Battle And TSTC Wins! W
by Laura Amaro, DMDT
hile other universities are known for their football or other sport teams, here at TSTC, we pride ourselves in our various technical competitions. Several of our programs compete in SkillsUSA every year, in addition to their own exclusive competitions.
On July 24, I had the pleasure of witnessing one of these challenges. Five of our Culinary Arts students battled STC in the first annual South Texas Iron Chef-style competition at the Dodge Arena as part of a preliminary promotion for the Appetite for Education Cook-Off that was to take place the following day. The TSTC team consisted of Captain Andrew Moreno, Cuca Torres, Marco Berardi, Ivan Constante and Cesar Delgado. The teams were given exactly two hours to cook an entree and dessert that had to integrate a secret ingredient announced at start-time. Five judges graded their dishes based on presentation, taste, flavor, texture, balance, and originality. Without a doubt, this was to be a very exciting event. To help support and cheer on our TSTC team, SGA invited students and provided transportation to and from the event. Their initiative resulted in TSTC supporters making up more than 65 percent of the spectators, despite the fact we were on STC territory. Knowing this only fueled our crowd’s spirit and cheers. The intensity of the crowd, however, did not distress TSTC’s team, which showed its experience and diligence. When asked if the size of the crowd had any effect on their work, Ivan Constante said, “I was so focused that I phased everybody out. I never even noticed the crowd.”

Taste
• Physical reaction – Analyzed through chemical information sent from taste buds to brain • Uses only sense of taste • Five basic tastes – Bitter, sour, sweet, salty, umami (detects glumatic acids in protein)
F lavor
• Relies mostly on sense of smell • Subjective – Interpreted after all information is gathered • Infinite range of flavors
Ever wonder why when you cover your nose while eating an onion, you can’t taste it? It’s because onions have no taste – bitter, sour, sweet, salty, or umami. It relies on flavor for you to recognize it! 08

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
I
n this sixth installment of the beloved boy who battles evil in this estranged world of wizards and magic, David Yates is back as director joined by screen writer Steve Kloves, who wrote the first four films. Many of the fantastic tones and effects of the past movies are still well in place and shots that guide you through the movie with every angle in mind.
The story picks up literally from the ending of the previous film and moves things along its next plot. There are some new elements added that are known to the readers of the novel series, but those who have not read the novels will need to assume many things. For example, Harry Potter has now gained the title, as if he needed another : “The Chosen One.” Rated PG 1 hr 22 min Fantasy / Sci-Fi
This film, though the same feel as the others, had a very different mission to execute from its predecessors. This sixth installment was meant to dive into the past and bring to surface the small memories that lead to this Voldemort gripped
Special
S
pecial is a delectably visual film with much attention to cinematography that will leave the viewer curious about the unfolding plotline. Each introducing shot contains such a level of quirk that the viewer is visually drawn even before any dialogue.
Rated R 1 hr 40 min Dark Comedy
The film stars Michael Rapaport as Les, a lowly meter maid who enrolls in a drug trial for an anti-depressant called “Special.” The film does not premise his ailment, but instead takes the direction of the supposed cure, which was a good move I believe. present., as well as to indulge practically every teen romance craze that has hovered over this series.
Having said the many things that this film has accomplished, I cannot leave you with only happy thoughts. If I had to explain the plot of this film, I would compare it to a dodo bird, nonexistent. At first I was shocked at the lack of climactic integrity, but after some research I learned that this was due to how the book was written. On top of that there were the edits done to the book that didn’t make it onto the screenplay. I can see how many people would be quick to scoff at the presentation of this movie, but it wasn’t so much the filmmakers as the original text that it derived from. This could also bring the question of how well some novels do not translate well into major motion pictures based on the fact that the elements needed for either are not always executed in the same fashion.

the movie too heavily. In the case of Les, a one in one million adverse drug reaction occurs. The drug begins to make him believe that he possesses super powers such as flight, telepathy and the ability to walk through walls. The story takes many turns, including times that you are not sure who is right and who is wrong. I found myself asking, “Wait, does Les really have powers?”
In spite of the dominating hero theme, there is a lot of humanizing moral qualities to this film. Within the mishaps and good vs. evil battles, the viewer can see Les encountering many of life’s hardships and his retort to them with the help of his newfound courage.

Tin Man, Dorothy, and Scarecrow in place. Lights up. Dorothy: It’s a Tin Man! Tin Man (Holds up his ax): Who goes there? Dorothy: I’m Dorothy. This is Scarecrow. Who are you? Tin Man: I don’t know, and I don’t care. (Steps back from Toto.) Get that pest away from me! Dorothy: Tin Man! Why it’s only Toto, my dog. He’s very friendly. Tin Man: Why I oughta… (Begins to swing ax at Toto. Scarecrow blocks him.) Dorothy: Why, he’s only a puppy! What’s wrong with you? Have you no heart? Tin Man: I have no heart. I hate everything because nothing ever goes right. Scarecrow: We go see King Jesus. He give me brain. Maybe give you heart. Tin Man: Well, I have nowhere else to go. Tin Man joins them. The trio walks along the road, not really paying attention to their surroundings. Lights down. SCENE 4: Dorothy meets Lion. Change scenery. Lion, Tin Man, Dorothy, and Scarecrow in place. Lights up. Dorothy: I don’t like this forest! It’s – it’s dark and creepy! Scarecrow: Of course, I don’t know, but I think it gets darker before it gets lighter. Dorothy and Tin Man stop and look at Scarecrow. They look at each other and shrug. Dorothy: Do – do you suppose we’ll meet any animals? Tin Man: Mmmm – we might. Scarecrow: Animals that – that eat straw? Tin Man: Some – but mostly lions and tigers and bears. Dorothy: Oh! Lions, and tigers and bears! Oh, - my – Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man: Lions and tigers and bears! Dorothy: Oh my! Scarecrow: Oh, look! Dorothy: Oh! Lion ( Jumps out of bushes. Air punches like a boxer.): Hah! Put ‘em up! Put ‘em – up! Which one of you first? I’ll fight you both together, if you want. I’ll fight ya’ with one paw tied behind my back! I’ll fight ya’ standin’ on one foot! I’ll fight ‘ya with my eyes closed. Oh, pullin’ an ax on me, eh? Sneakin’ up on me, eh? Why! Tin Man: Go away and let us alone. Lion: Oh, scared, huh? Afraid, huh? Hah! How long can you stay fresh in that can? Come on, get up and fight you shivering junkyard! Put your hands up, you lop-sided bag of hay! Scarecrow: Now that’s getting personal, Lion. Tin Man: Yes, get up and teach him a lesson. Scarecrow: Well, what’s wrong with you teachin’ him? Tin Man: A – well – well, I hardly know him. Lion (looking at Toto): Well, I’ll get you anyway, Pee Wee. Dorothy (slaps Lion’s paw): Oh! Shame on you! To be continued... 12

by Benji Huerta, CSMT
I watch you behind dimmed eyes, staring straight through your shining ones, searching, finding. I can see my reflection embedded in your center, all of the wonders and cries, unwinding I pray that some day you will realize what was important to me, even though I said it time and time again I know that there would be no better time in our lives, to show you, to lead you, to call you my friend. Then the time that the inevitable truth sinks in our minds, though painful as it may seem to be But when try after try gets you nowhere, the conclusion to this story made big, is apparent to me. The signs I read everyday are negative and positive, attracted, yet forced apart it is to say I wish the force left and attraction set in, so that my world will be filled with colors, instead of grey And you learn to be more open to the directions your life takes you, so that you will finally be feeling The words I will tell you, to save what can be lost, in a matter most spent as time in healing. For what matters is of special connections, through fear and regret, to see what is the truth To look out and see the brightest of stars showing your fate, what is given freely in youth. I find myself drifting away from the conscious state and I think to myself, why did it have to be like this Knowing that it was almost something that could have changed things forever, turning all into true, peaceful, bliss. Now the time to take my leave is here and your bright shining eyes appear darker to me, I wait. I wait to see you once again as I turn away from light into darkness of heart, my path not straight. Our last goodbye could have been nothing more than just a simple farewell, but I refuse to keep That there was nothing that could be done to help this situation, to help that of which we seek But in stubborn thoughts with the ability to remain unchanged, I take the final slow turn And look toward the future with no doubt in my mind the choice was made, yet I will, for you, still yearn.

Discussing delicate personal matters frees you to be more emotionally honest and vulnerable. Keep in mind this quote written by a famous Taurean: “To thy own self be true..." William Shakespeare

Other physically active Scorpios are Matthew McConaughey, Jodie Foster and Owen Wilson.
Gemini 5/21–6/21 Underneath the noise of your dreams are the shrill of drills in the classroom. You feel more and more comfortable in your program as a Dental Hygienist at TSTC, despite the intense smell of "education" in the building. You experience lots of emotions as your instructors challenge you to never settle for less than your best. Keep your focus on the books and you will be just fine. Famous Geminis include Kanye West, Angelina Jolie, and Johnny Depp.
Sagittarius 11/22–12/21 Pluto is still in your personal wealth sector, so this could be a good time for career-oriented financial activities. Celebrity Sagittarians include: Jon Stewart, Tyra Banks, and Milla Jovovich.
Cancer 6/22–7/22 Stay positive and don’t ask others to do tasks that you know very well you should be doing for yourself. You doubt yourself too much and that is what keeps you in a rut. Celebrity Cancers known for their charming character: Robin Williams, Princess Diana, and John Cusack.
Capricorn 12/22–1/19 A new personal cycle begins for you, and you feel fresh and reenergized. Apply your increased energy to working hard and really making a dent in the jobs you have to do. There are tutors, teachers, and labs-- all at arms length! Famous Capricorns include: Denzel Washington, Tiger Woods, and Mary J. Blige.
Leo 7/23–8/22 This month, you could find you are easily overworked and emotionally exhausted.
