Meet Your New 2010-2011 SGA Officers

Right: Most Active Club Member award winners.

John Leo Garcia SGA President

Hi, I’m your new Student Government president! I’m from Harlingen and am in my second semester here at TSTC. I want to thank those who voted for me to be a representative of TSTC and trusted me to become president. I promise to work hard and make sure that all your needs and problems are answered. Remember that the SGA Office is always open if you have anything you need help with.

Aline Zamudio SGA Historian

Hello! I’m very excited to represent the TSTC student body as SGA Historian. I’m from Brownsville and graduated from San Benito High School in 2007. I just received my Associates Degree in Computer System Management Technology this May, and now I’m working toward getting my basic courses done so I can transfer to UTB. I enjoy watching movies, eating chocolate, spending time with my boyfriend and friends. I’m excited for this upcoming year and hope you are too. Hope to see you around!

Jose Saldierna SGA Vice President

Hello! I am very pleased to have become your new SGA vice president. I graduated from the Rio Hondo High class of 2008. I am enrolled in the Auto Collision Technology program and plan to graduate Spring 2011 with my Associates Degree. I like playing baseball, fishing, hunting and hanging out with friends. We are planning great events for this year, so look for us in the SGA Office!

Kimberly Roano SGA Treasurer

Howdy Mustangs! Thank you for electing me as your SGA treasurer for the next school year! After having spent three semesters here at TSTC, I'm confident I can fulfill the duties of an SGA officer as well as live up to the standards expected of me as your representative. I am currently finishing up my second semester in the Dental Hygiene Program with expectations to graduate in April 2011. Until then I plan to do the best job I can by keeping an open ear to the student body. Thank you, again, for letting me work for you!

Sarah Zamarripas SGA Secretary

Hello fellow Mustangs! I am proud to say I am your new Student Government secretary. I am from Harlingen and graduated from Harlingen High School in 2004. I am in my second year here at TSTC and currently enrolled in the Auto Collision Technology program to complete my Associates Degree. I enjoy the fun things in life, especially dancing and painting cars! I’m very outgoing and so if you have any questions feel free to come stop by!

Tony Cruz SGA Parliamentarian

Hello! My name is Tony, but I prefer to be called Tony Tone. I am your new parliamentarian and I will do my best to help give you an awesome experience here at TSTC. I am very excited to be part of the Student Government Association to try to make TSTC student life one to remember.

...that the Student Success Office helps college students like you? Take advantage of the Student Success services available to assist you in achieving your goals!

Mentors! Tutors! College Transfers! The Student Success Office is located in Building D (Biomedical/Dental Lab) Room 121. Call 956.364.4163 for more information!

They are here to help you so feel free to ask questions!

Q: If a guy cheated on someone with me and now we’re together, can I really trust him not to do the same with me?

A: In my opinion, if he cheated before it doesn't mean that he'll cheat again. However, if he was married and cheated then I’d worry about him doing the same to you. If he cheated on someone whom he was just dating, then the chances of him cheating on you now are no greater than if he had met you when he was single. I would keep the lines of communication open between you all and take things slow. You really need to be confident in yourself and what you can bring to the table in this relationship though. Thinking about his past actions will cause you to question the relationship, which will only doom it. Make sure you let him know your hesitations and weigh the pros and cons about continuing the relationship before you make it exclusive. E-mail advice.ally36@gmail.com and include your topic on the subject line. Name need not be included. A business born six years ago just opened three months ago in Harlingen. The Pizzeria is a cultural blend in pizza. It is the freshest in taste and the latest place to dine, hang out, catch up on work, or do lunch in town. Not satisfied with processed items, Pizzeria makes its own sauce, cheese blend, and dough. Now top that with any of their 16 toppings or 10 gourmet toppings and you've got yourself the definition of a pizza supreme.

The Pizzeria offers more than just typical pepperoni and sausage toppings. Try broccoli, eggplant, or zuchini and you won't believe you're eating vegetables.

Like a pizza panaderia, you can walk into Pizzeria and pick slices right off the showcase. With around $4 you can get yourself a slice and a drink!

Look into their gourmet pizzas like the chicken chipotle ranch, eggplant parmesan, the California, or the margarita. These are special recipes that the chef continues to perfect. New pizzas are always being created so don't miss out!

TECH NEWS FROM A GEEK

By: twitter.com/zMorris

Jet Packs are In!

We’ve all dreamt, pretended and even made whooshing noises like we had them. Stop lollygagging around and start saving up for the now available Martin Jetpack. No, really you should start saving right away because one of these bad boys will ring you up at about $90,000. So much for us poor folk living out our childhood dreams.

The Martin Jetpack by New Zealand’s Martin Aircraft is a 5 feet tall and 5.5 feet wide monster of a backpack that’s made from a carbon fiber composite and Kevlar for the rotor. The jetpack runs on gasoline (Yeah, that’s safe.) and can get you along at a nice 63 mph max for about 32 miles. Considering that it will be a bit noisy, it might not be ideal for late night burger runs. Although, should you choose to go cruising at night and happen to nod off, the Martin Jetpack is dummy proof and will even itself out into a calm hover if the controls should be released, which is pretty nifty because we all know there will be some goof out there who will freak out at 45 mph and just let go.

In order to get your hands on one of these monstrosities of awesome, you have to lay down a 10 percent deposit and hold off in a 12 month waiting period. Good news is that you don’t need a license to get airborne jetpack style, and the bad news is that other people don’t need a license to fly these into houses, gas stations and other public places.

The Apple iPad Effect OK, I know that I have discussed the Apple iPad here before, but there’s a lot of buzz flying around this device that people said they would never buy. After only a few days of the iPad’s Wi-Fi version release the numbers of units sold is said to have hit 300,000 on the release day and is reportedly creeping up on 500,000 units sold. The news was flying all over Twitter as well with reviews, pros, cons, praises and complaints. The Apple App Store was ready for the release with many developers releasing updates for iPad compatibility for free. However, some users were disgruntled at the sight of secondary apps being released with the surprise that you had to buy them all over again!

And so another technology war rises with the release of the Apple iPad. The Kindle will not go down without a fight, but Apple is fighting smart. The clash of the devices is not in its advanced technology, as the iPad would take the cake. Instead, it is over the market that the Kindle first dominated, the ebook. For a while the Amazon E-Book Store has reported that it was losing money with its user enticing price cap of $9.99, even for best sellers, so naturally Apple jumped in. The user argument of a cheaper distribution due to the paperless process of e-books can attest to the demand of low e-book prices. However, with Amazon cutting into publishers profits, the Kindle will not stand against new device that can compete with it. Apple is presenting a new

price model and setting new price points where e-books will cost up to $14.99 initially. The Apple iBookstore has already signed and is launching with titles from many major publishers. The 3G version of the iPad will be hitting stores soon, but not soon enough. The iPad is surely a travel friendly device whose functionality can be minimized with the restriction of needing a wi-fi hot spot.

of this Man who took an interest in me,

In the land of dreams

in the perfection that is me.

and through the land of dreams eyes,

For once

He saw me.

the spotlight complimented me.

One word from His mouth

+

and one touch from His loving hand

Yes, His flawless handiwork

allowed me to see me

was eminently clear.

through the land of dreams eyes.

And on this day,

In that moment

what a beautiful day,

I was finally perfect.

such a precious Sunday,

Insecurities were gone,

He rested, sitting next to me

and all fear was subject to my innocence.

and admired the beauty

I was now beautiful,

that is me.

careless, and precious in His sight.

Contested Will: Who Wrote Shakespeare? by James Shapiro

In this remarkable book, Shakespeare scholar James Shapiro explains when and why so many people began to question whether Shakespeare wrote his plays. It is a fascinating story, replete with forgeries, deception, false claimants, ciphers and codes, conspiracy theories and a stunning failure to grasp the power of the imagination.

Capitol Betrayal by William Bernhardt

William Bernhardt’s best-selling novels explore politics, power, ambition, crime, and the law. Now he scales new heights of suspense as, in one harrowing day, lawyer and former senator Ben Kincaid enters the eye of an international storm, a crisis with consequences beyond calculation.

A History of Violence written by John Wagner and art by Vince Locke

It was just another quiet day at McKenna's Diner until a couple of wanted killers walked in looking for trouble. Instead, they got bullets, and Tom McKenna got to be an instant media celebrity. That got him a lot of attention from some people he thought he'd escaped long ago. The kind of people who never forget a face, even after twenty years.

Not Fourteen

when we were thirteen i played on the unmarked graves of lizards and snakes you braided flowers into rings the calluses on your fingers broke the weeds the scar on your chest shone bright magenta in the sun in the summer, when we were thirteen i paced the floor to see the wood warp my feet remained brown from the hill next to the tree Your mom yelled at the patch of dirt next to your bed the fault fell on me your mom would have none of that when we were thirteen your mom threw away my pink rotary phone she told you i was too old to play with toys the tears that licked your skin were yellow in the lamp we picked through the trash and found cut cardboard the puzzles near the black bananas had soggy stains when i was fourteen and you were thirteen i tied my tooth to the doorknob for extra coins we wanted a home above the world my mouth was a waterfall of scarlet you sympathized with my cries over the taste of copper when you were thirteen we mixed chocolate powder with milk until the top got white with foam we heated it on the stove without permission from your mom

On my way to fight this battle But not on sand, or some foreign land But instead it’s in my head Something blue, something red It’s as clear as everclear Yet I know that death is near He is behind me, he is beneath me He is searching for my weakness He searches hard all day, he searches hard all night But a weakness he just cannot find He is a bit amazed, he is a bit in awe This kid is perfect, with many flaws Death knew that he must let him go For deep down inside the kid Something unknown calls home A power so great so grand Yet no one knew that the kid Controlled this power in just his hand

Judge’s Note This poem exults the power of the pen in a triumph of Innocense over Death.

Cutting edge by Linda Eguiluz Should there be a cutting edge to this silence, nomad stares and twisted meanings.

The letters to you written have been burned by that venom of yours, slicing slowly through the syllables.

before, when you were not thirteen we made promises to meet again, in the after you picked a spot near the grave of reptiles we traded our vows i traced your scar with my calluses i fiddled with the ring on my finger

Judge’s Note This poem contains the playfulness of adolescence with evocative images employing colors and the repetition of symbols.

[

Judge’s Note The foreboding in the first stanza in this poem leads to the juxtaposition of two potent images: burning venom and slicing knife, symbolizing the destruction of a relationship.
